Cooking up gold Hillcrest Christian College culinary stars Mikey Romey, Phoebe Anderson, Bridget Holloway and Sasha Saito are stoked with their recent wins at the Victorian Culinary Challenge. The budding chefs impressed the judges with their mouth-watering de-constructed Peking chicken with plum sauce, pancakes, crispy shallots, pickled vegetables, stir-fried choy sum and coriander dust, and Moroccan chicken with a Moroccan spiced sauce, couscous, minted yoghurt, roasted capsicum, pumpkin puree, crispy chicken skin and coriander dust. A final farewell greeted the restaurant’s final months. Mr Chipperfield said at that time that when the partners had bought the property from the Tuckfield estate in 1974, there had been farmland through to Dandenong. The relentless pace of the South East Growth Corridor had finally caught up, and after five decades in the hospitality sector: “Our bones have told us to quit while we’re ahead,” he said. “It’s very sad and difficult for us to part with the cottage after years of developing the business and servicing people in the Berwick community for a good 40 years. Its stately gates, English and French fountains and park-like gardens were matched by opulent finishes within the restaurant, making every meal a treasured memory. The old English style venue was so popular that bookings had to be made sometimes six months in advance. With the passage of a planning scheme amendment at last week’s Casey Council meeting, Berwick is one step closer to farewelling one of the landmark properties in the village, the former Clover Cottage restaurant site, on Manuka Road. The site is one of four large-acre blocks totalling 18.4 hectares - to be rezoned to residential under amendment C231, which now awaits only the State Planning Minister’s approval. Local developer Parklea will move within the year to commence development of much

of the subject land for new housing - but a private developer Jinguang Pan owns the historic Clover Cottage land, and its fate is less clear. It’s likely the original cottage behind the restaurant building - dating back to the late 1800s - may be retained, but the restaurant and landscaped gardens may make way for the needs of suburbia. Star News was unable to make contact with Jinguang Pan before deadline. For close to 40 years, Clover Cottage was part of the social fabric of Berwick - and the wider City of Casey - hosting Mayoral Dinners, Rotary club, Inner Wheel and business group meetings, Oaks Day parties not to be missed,

Church toasts milestone resentatives from the City of Casey, the Shire of Cardinia and the Churches of Christ Victoria and Tasmania Leadership. “Their mission to make followers of Jesus, plant churches and transform communities continues to this day just as it did 150 years ago,” senior pastor Botha said. Ms Stapledon congratulated the Berwick Church of Christ on its sesquicentennial year. “What a milestone for this church, what a milestone for the body of Christ and what a mile stone for the City of Casey,” Ms Stapledon said.

A historic occasion was celebrated on Sunday 23 June where the public reflected on 150 years of a church that has done - and is still doing - so much for the Berwick and Casey communities. Berwick Church of Christ has a history that goes back to 1869. “Evangelist James Hamill from Prahran Church of Christ was on his way to Pakenham when he stopped at a little Bootmaker’s Shop in Berwick to have his boots repaired,” Berwick

Church of Christ senior pastor Braam Botha said. “Through that initial encounter, the bootmaker and the bootmaker’s family made a decision to follow Jesus and were subsequently baptised in the Cardinia Creek.” That was when the journey of a church that eventually became Berwick Church of Christ began. On Sunday a service was held commencing with the unveiling of the 150th Anniversary Plaque with City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon and Cr Sam Aziz and as well as rep-

“A century and a half of serving Jesus, 150 years of serving the former Shire of Berwick and more recently the City of Casey for 25 of those years. “I pondered to think about what our church and wider community might look like had Berwick Church of Christ had not been such a pivotal part of our shire and now our city and acknowledge that it would have looked very different indeed. “Here’s to another 150 years.”

IN BRIEF

Following the success of the 170th annual Berwick Show in February, it was time for the organisers to enjoy and celebrate an amazing achievement. At the Berwick and District Agricultural and Horticultural Society Inc's recent AGM, Melissa Hogg-Marshall gave her President's Report, acknowledging the efforts of the whole Society. She concluded by saying, "it is without a doubt a credit to you all for your dedication, time, selflessness and passion that makes the show what it is today. We have proved what a great event it is and now we need to harness the excitement and move on to 2020." Ms Hogg-Marshall recognised there were many contributing factors to the success of the 170th show including fantastic weather, increased attendance, a new look website and social media, ticketing system and sponsors like the City of Casey - but none more important than the many volunteers, both society and non-society members, that contribute vital countless hours and expertise. Certificates of Appreciation were given to service groups that assisted, Amanda Baker, Cathie Waters and Des Honicke along with retiring section chairpersons, Gayle Joyce, Bert Rae, Cheryl Henderson and Annetta Wilson. The pinnacle of being a Berwick and District Agricultural and Horticultural Society member is to be awarded Life Membership and this was bestowed to the incoming President Tom Gibson. Noelene King, OAM, Bert Rae OAM, and Warwick Glendenning presented Mr Gibson with his Life Membership badge and spoke about his long association with the society.

Left to Right: An award was presented by Noelene King OAM to Patrick, Jacinta and Lindsay Anderson in recognition of their long association with the Berwick Show. Although Mr Gibson officially joined the committee in 2003, Alex Scott and Co have been supporting the show for over hundred years. Mr Gibson has been involved in various aspects of the show including introducing the fun run on the Sunday morning of the show weekend. He has previously been President in 20132014 and has once again taken on the role for the upcoming year. Bert Rae remembered Mr Gibson attending the Show Ball as a very young man. "Tom always made an entrance arriving in his tails and his sandshoes," Mr Rae remarked. After being badged, Mr Gibson said that it is a great honour to be given Life Membership. "I do have fond memories of attending the ball," he added. Another milestone acknowledged during the evening was the recognition of the Anderson family who had been involved within the dairy cattle section of the show for over 120 years. Patrick, Lindsay and Jacinta were in at-

tendance for what they believed to be recognition to Patrick. Patrick will represent Berwick, Central and South Gippsland Affiliated Societies as Junior Ambassador at the upcoming finals at the Victorian Agricultural Show Convention at Camperdown at the end of June. The family have been stalwarts in the dairy section with Lindsay proudly accepting the award on behalf of the Anderson family, as his brother Ian and mother Winsome were unable to attend. He remarked that there are many stories of the early days of how they transported their cows on the train to Dandenong and then walked to show. In congratulating the Anderson family, Mr Gibson commented on the longevity of the family's involvement. "Our grandfathers probably knew each other well and with the Gibson 6th generation on the way, hopefully this connection will continue, especially with you having a grandson now interested in beef cattle," he said on the night. As incoming president Tom thanked everyone for electing him for a second term and looked forward to continuous improvement of the show. With the date set for February 22 and 23, 2020, he noted that he knew that everyone involved devotes many hours to the success of the biggest event in the City of Casey. The evening concluded with a photo presentation, capturing all the highlights of the 170th show and showcasing a fantastic team of volunteers.

Grand lady Gerda celebrates 100 years Gerda Elisa Paula Laabs marked her 100th birthday this month with family and friends, celebrating a life well lived. A party at her Endeavour Hills aged care home, View Hills Manor, was attended by the Honorary Consul-General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Michael Pearce, who presented her with a certificate and letter from the German government. She also received cards and messages from the Queen, the Governor General of Australia, Prime Minister Scott Morrison and her local MP. Born on June 23, 1919 in a rural property in Wilhelmsburg, just outside of Hamburg in Germany, Ms Laabs' early years were impacted by World War Two. At the beginning of the World War Two, age 20, she worked as a secretary for a company in Norway that produced Heavy Water, the only woman in an all-male workplace. It was later bombed by the English. When production ceased she returned to Germany and worked for another company that was based underground near a forest, which manufactured

air craft components. It too was subsequently bombed out, but luckily, Ms Laabs had been ill and wasn't at work that day. The times being what they were, she had the Gestapo knocking at her door the next day, questioning why she wasn't at work - they thought that she may have been a spy. Eventually she was allowed to leave and return to her parents in Wilhemsburg. On the train to Hamburg she spoke to a lady who suggested she become a nurse, so in Hamburg Ms Laabs went directly to the nearest hospital and signed up to be a nurse. Most of her nursing was spent attending to the troop trains with the wounded soldiers. When the war ended and the Americans and English occupied Germany, she met an English soldier and subsequently had a child, but the soldier was deployed back home. Later, Ms Laabs discovered he was already married and wanted nothing to do with her or the child, so she raised a son on her own until she met Joachim Friedrich. They married in 1957, came out to Australia and had daughter Cornelia in 1958.

Joachim died in a work place accident in Collins Street in 1960, leaving Ms Laabs on her own again. Thinking it better to return to Germany and have the support of her family, she moved back, but with the threat of Russia on the East she decided to return to Australia in 1962. Ms Laabs found secretarial work for a building supplies company in Springvale, and bought her own home there, where she met and married Lindsey McRorie. Unfortunately that marriage broke down and again she was left to raise 2 children. Her son passed away some years later. For many years she was on her own until 1970 when she met Gerhard Deich. The pair married and were together until his passing in 2008. Now, Ms Laabs has 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren with one more on the way. She lived in her own home from 1962 to 2018 and loves the sea, swimming and bush walking. A favourite ritual was travelling to Magnetic Island every year for 3 - 4 months and for many years she also travelled back to Germany to visit family and friends.

Identity wanted in relation to car jacking A driver has had a lucky escape after being targeted by a potential car thief. According to the Casey Eyewatch Facebook page, a female approached a person sitting in their car with their young child on May 16 and demanded the keys. The female suspect struck the victim in an attempt to get the keys. The victim was able to flee and had the keys to her vehicle in her pocket making a safe getaway. An image of a person of interest is available on the Facebook page and anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

Crash footage needed Police are seeking footage of a crash in Cranbourne over the Queen's Birthday weekend. According to the Casey Eyewatch Facebook page, police are appealing for anyone that witnessed or might have dash cam footage of a motor vehicle accident that occurred on Monday June 10 at approximately 9:30pm at the intersection of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road and Kingdom Drive, Cranbourne. Anyone with information is urged to contact Narre Warren Police Station on 9705 3111 or Crime Stoppers.

Police nab bad drivers Police have caught almost 20 drivers doing the wrong thing on Clyde Road, all in the space of a few hours. After setting up on the Berwick arterial, within hours police had taken 4 suspended drivers off the roads, caught two speeding drivers doing between 10-15km/h over the limit, found one driver who was not displaying his P-plates, nine unregistered vehicles and three drivers who were unlicensed.

THE LOWDOWN with Christina Hewawissa, designer and founder of Rosa Rosa The Label

What is something people don't know about you? I'm a major nerd. I love spreadsheets, numbers and strategies. People often think I'm just a creative carefree soul but I am definitely more mathematical. What's the best thing about owning your own fashion label? Having the flexibility to create whatever I want with no restrictions. Not forced to design around trends or for a particular customer that is not me. What is your favourite holiday spot? There's no one place. I love new adventures and discovering different places of the world, but also enjoy much-needed R & R holidays. What is your favourite book? Will Grayson Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan. A book that is light-hearted and imaginative that lets you escape the realm of busy everyday life. At school I... Was the nerdy one, the talkative one, the weird one, and all in between. I was friends with lots of different groups and floated between them all. If you could collaborate with any designer, who would it be? There's too many to choose from. Definitely a locally made, ethical fashion brand with a similar personality. Which six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to dinner? If I could have 10+ people I would choose my whole family because I could not live without them, but if I had three I would choose my mum, my boyfriend and my dog. Choosing six is hard... Favourite movie? If you can't tell by now I am certainly no good at choosing favourites! Could not pick only one. What would you last meal be? Definitely pasta!

THREE … rainy day school holiday ideas

1

Break out the board games You'll never be bored with board games! Clear the dining table, lay out the Monopoly money and start dealing. Or perhaps you could teach your kids some of your old favourites - think Skipbo, dominoes and Rummikub. Fun for all ages!

2

Get crafty No, we don't mean cheating at the board games. Head to your local Spotlight, Lincraft or Riot, load up on paints, crayons and paper, and let the kids express themselves through art. A simple cross or long stitch pattern can keep them occupied for hours too.

3

Get your bake on Winter is the ideal time to kick back with a rich dessert - and it's even better when you've made it yourself. Get the kids to help out with the mixing, measuring and decorating, and of course the obligatory licking of the spoon.

World’s best, no stress In 2018, six students came together to form Team S.A.N.I.T.Y. (Solving Situational Anxiety In Today's Youth) as part of Fountain Gate Secondary College's Future Problem Solvers Program. Their focus was on solving situational anxiety in today's world and they tackled this problem by developing their team's five tips and strategies for managing situational anxiety, including a 'Grounding Method' which focused on the five senses to distract and reduce panic. To reach as many people as possible with their strategies, the team hosted the College's

first 'Anxiety Awareness Workshop' and developed a pocket book with fun and engaging activities practising their five strategies, along with a YouTube video. In October 2018 the members of Team S.A.N.I.T.Y. placed second at the Future Problem Solvers National Championships. Along with the accolades of this amazing title they were also invited to represent the College and Australia at the Future Problem Solvers International Championships in Amherst, Massachusetts USA. After extensive fundraising and amazing

support from loyal sponsors, the students travelled to America in June 2019 where they were awarded first place in the whole world in their division. Team coach and program coordinator, Katie Byers, described the whole experience as "truly life changing". "I feel truly and whole-heartedly blessed to have had the privilege to work with such amazing and gifted young adults. We can all be extremely proud of the achievements made by this amazing group of young problem solvers!" she said.

Team S.A.N.I.T.Y. came first in the world with their anxiety-busting ideas. All of the projects and resources can be viewed on Team S.A.N.I.T.Y.'s website at http://teamsanityfgsc.com/

Kitchen-crazy students cook up culinary gold Hillcrest Christian College, in Clyde North, had an amazing win at the Victorian Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge, but that’s only half the story. The real story was the character qualities shown by the students - determination, encouragement, courage and leadership. On Friday 24 May four Hillcrest Year 10 Food Technology students competed in the Victorian Culinary Challenge, run by the Australian Culinary Federation, held at St John’s Regional College in Dandenong. Mikey Romey, Gaby Samtoy, Bridget Holloway and Sasha Saito had practised their cooking skills over the past months to prepare for the competition. The students hosted a lunch for school leaders to taste test their dishes. Unfortunately, on the day of the competition, Gaby was unwell and couldn’t attend. This was disappointing as she had worked so hard to prepare for the competition but on the morning of the event, Phoebe Anderson agreed to be part of the team with Mickey. “Phoebe is to be commended for her wonderful attitude and willingness to be part of the competition”, said Hillcrest Food Technology teacher Michelle Schnabel.

Peking chicken with plum sauce, pancakes, crispy shallots, pickled vegetables, stir-fried choy sum and coriander dust,

Moroccan chicken, with a Moroccan spiced sauce, couscous, minted yoghurt, roasted capsicum, pumpkin puree, crispy chicken skin and coriander dust.

“On the 20 minute car ride to Dandenong, Phoebe had to learn the recipe, study the presentation of the dish from a photo and watch a YouTube clip on how to cut up a whole chicken!” The event was amazing with a very high lev-

el of culinary skills displayed with teams from all over Melbourne. Mikey and Phoebe cooked their dish, de-constructed Peking chicken with plum sauce, pancakes, crispy shallots, pickled vegetables, stir-fried choy sum and coriander dust, all in one hour.

Sasha and Bridget cooked Moroccan chicken, with a Moroccan spiced sauce, couscous, minted yoghurt, roasted capsicum, pumpkin puree, crispy chicken skin and coriander dust. Mrs Schnabel said the students’ organisation and team work was “amazing“ and they were the first team to serve their dish. At the beginning of the competition all teams start will 100 points and marks are then deducted for the final score. The criteria included the skills demonstrated and the flavour of the dish. Sasha and Bridget received a score over 80 to receive a Silver medal for their well-presented and flavoursome Moroccan Chicken. Mikey and Phoebe were awarded a Gold medal for their de-constructed Peking chicken with an outstanding score of 96 out of 100. They won the competition and will represent Victoria and compete in the National Schools Culinary Challenge in August to be held in Darwin. The judges from the Australian Culinary Federation commended both Hillcrest teams on their teamwork, the flavours in their dishes and their high standard of food presentation.

It was a genuine pleasure to attend the recent launch of Tales from Hampton Park Secondary College, a book containing over 100 short stories of the students, parents and teachers from the school who have come to Australia as refugees. This local state secondary college is to be congratulated for facilitating and encouraging these college members to tell their amazing stories. The tales in this book tell how many desperate people from many troubled homelands sought asylum in Australia successfully and eventually settled in Hampton Park. During the evening we heard real people talk about their own real stories of courage, resilience, family, loyalty and sacrifice. We bought a copy of the book so we could read more of the stories. We encourage others to buy the book from Hampton Park Secondary College or borrow a copy from one of the City of Casey Libraries. Jan and Geoff Trezise, Berwick

RAY’S SAY

On Wednesday 19 June, Berwick Star News shared a notification on its Facebook page about the upcoming singleuse plastic bag ban in Victoria. Here's how residents reacted: Donna McKerchar: Don't think we need to brace ourselves. Should of happened years ago. Society of convenience is shocking on the environment Peter James: plastic bags one to two kilos in a year, disposable nappies half a ton a year per baby, questioning why aren't they being banned, Coles and Woolworths have gone from providing them for free and now selling them, disposable nappies take up most of a shopping aisle, Coles and Woolworths make a lot of money from disposable nappies, pointing out that plastic bags are a load of corporate bulls**t. Jennie Range: They need to start working on things like plastic packaging first as there obviously has been a drop in the plastic bags but they always get reused in my house but you can reuse all the plastic packaging that food and other stuff comes in like apples have a plastic container and then plastic wrapped around it. Double plastic. Why not change that to say cardboard container and netting wrapping. But aside from that. Councils and government need to work on recycling plants to combat what is going to landfill. That should be dealt with first. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Plea calls for roads fix By Jessica Anstice Thousands of people have backed a resident's effort to fix the Berwick Road and Wellington Road intersection in Narre Warren East. Melany Blackwell, who lives right on the corner of the intersection, collected more than 500 signatures for the petition in under 24 hours. "The amount of signatures just demonstrates the level of concern people have regarding that intersection," she said. "It's an absolutely shocking intersection. We call it 'suicide corner'. "From where I live, we can hear the accidents as they happen and we see the impact of them." Ms Blackwell is calling on the Minister for Roads and Road Safety Jaala Pulford, City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon, Yarra Ranges Shire Mayor Tony Stevenson and Member for La Trobe Jason Wood. Her petition seeks either traffic lights or a roundabout but "anything to make it safer" is welcomed. "Wellington Road is often blocked off due to accidents there. It's just terrible," she added. "I actually go to the roundabout down the road just to avoid it, it's just not worth the risk. "I know a lot of people who do the same. They all avoid 'suicide corner'." Clover Cottage business partners John Chipperfield and Trevor Burr were presented with Paul Harris Fellowships in 2017 by an appreciative Berwick Rotary Club for their many years of support to the community.

A final farewell From Page 1 “What I’ll miss most is our customer base. It’s precious to us. We were so young when we opened up and we’ve seen lots of generations through the restaurant. “We’ve waited on many celebrities but it hasn’t been the high flyers keeping us alive all these years, it’s been our guests who have

saved their hard-earned dollars for a special dinner at the cottage. “Our suppliers, staff and customers have basically become our acquaintances. “It’s been an amazing journey. “But sadly, it’s time.” And now, it seems, it’s time for the former restaurant, too.

with AMANDA STAPLEDON

The Rotary wheel turns We have enjoyed some celebratory events this past month and wanted to feature some of them: ROTARY CLUB OF CRANBOURNE CHANGEOVER On Friday I had the pleasure of attending the Rotary Club of Cranbourne Changeover and thanked the outgoing President Marcel Hendriksen and his wife Ingrid for an outstanding year and to congratulate incoming President Garry Luxford and his wife Kate (soon to become Inner Wheel District Governor) and to wish them a very successful and happy year. It was a great night where many were acknowledged including Ps Drew Gormlie, who was given a Paul Harris Fellow Award for his service to Mental Health services and the “soon to be opened” L’Arte Central; a social enterprise café in Cranbourne East. A great night, with a group of hard working and fun loving people - Thank you! BERWICK CHURCH OF CHRIST 150 YEARS On Sunday, Cr Sam Aziz and I attended the celebrations of a century and half of this great church. A church that first existed in High Street, Berwick in 1869 and then moved to Centre Road Berwick in 1991. A large congregation has prevailed at Berwick Church of Christ and the ministry within the church and the outreach to the wider community is valued by the Berwick and the Casey Cardinia communities. This was a once in a life time event for those present however, with a vision such as the new Senior Pastor Braam Botha and his leadership unveiled at the service, we can only look forward to an even bigger and brighter 150 years. Congratulations Berwick Church of Christ and here’s to the next 150 years. I attended four of them hosted by the Lioness Club of Berwick, Casey North Information and Support Service, Uniting Church of Cranbourne and the Balla Balla Centre and they were so much fun whilst fighting for a serious cause. Casey jumps on future park lands

Casey has its say on bushfire centre

By Andrew Cantwell

The Casey community is being invited to have its say on a new bushfire museum and education centre to raise awareness of the history, stories and lessons of the 2009 Victorian Bushfires, as well as other significant fires. Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas called on people from across the City of Casey to participate in the online public consultation process which seeks input from bushfire-affected communities, as well as those involved in bushfire recovery and emergency management, and First Peoples community members. The Bushfire Anniversary Advisory Group has recommended creating a bushfire museum with a reflective space to commemorate our past and educate generations into the future. The consultation will seek community views on how a centre or program would function, possible locations if a permanent site was to be established, and what visitors would expect to see and learn during a visit. Feedback gathered during the consultation process will help shape the next steps for the project which is being led by Creative Victoria in consultation with groups including the CFA. The Victorian Bushfire Centre public consultation is open until 15 August, and residents can have their say at www.engage.vic.gov.au/ bushfire-centre-consultation.

Casey City Council will move quickly to secure three farmlets at Clyde for a future sporting park - as part of a massive future sporting and recreational precinct, south of Ballarto Road. The recently approved planning scheme amendment C257 will allow Casey to compulsorily acquire land totaling just over 82 hectares for a new Clyde Park Sports Precinct. Planning for the sporting facilities - to include baseball, softball, rugby and soccer - is still some time off, but Casey will move to scoop up the land now to lock in the purchase price. The State Government and Melbourne Water also plan purchases in the neighbouring area for a new Clyde Regional Park and Melbourne Water retarding basin - the three purchases are almost 400 hectares in total. A recent council report on the proposed purchase noted the sports park was not yet listed in the 10-year capital works forecast. But the council hopes that the proximity to the State and Melbourne Water developments will allow some shared carparks, footpaths, lighting and the like, leading to cost savings.

Drug crimes up By Danielle Kutchel

The latest crime statistics are in, and it's a mixed bag for the City of Casey. Released on Thursday 20 June, the latest numbers show that the number of homicides, assaults and sexual offences per 100,000 are lower than at the same time last year. Theft and deception offences, however, have increased slightly. The number of burglary and break-in offences per 100,000 has also continued to fall. However, drug related crimes, including dealing and trafficking, cultivating and manufacturing, and use and possession, have in-

creased on last year's numbers. The Crime Statistics Agency publishes recorded crime statistics every quarter, and the latest statistics cover the year ending 31 March 2019. Across Victoria, the latest data from the independent Crime Statistics Agency shows that after seven consecutive quarterly reductions, the crime rate has stabilised. The data for the year to March 2019 shows a stabilisation in the crime rate with a minor increase of 0.5 per cent offences per 100,000 populations compared to the previous year period.

The agency advises that the offence rate, which takes into account population change, is the most appropriate measure of comparison over time. Minister for Police and Emergency Services Lisa Neville says this stabilising crime rate is largely due to the efforts of expanding and well-resourced police force proactively policing crime. "Our unprecedented investment in police numbers and capability continues to make a real difference with increasing numbers of offenders processed by police and the lowest number of victims on record," Ms Neville said.

Carefree night for mums to celebrate By Danielle Kutchel The Indian Association Cardinia Casey is gearing up for its glittering night of nights. On Saturday 29th June the Association will host its Annual Gala Ladies Night in Berwick, an opportunity for mothers to enjoy a carefree night of fun. "Half of our team is mums with young kids and we hardly get time off for ourselves," a spokeswoman for the Association said. "We thought there would be other mums out there wanting to enjoy a carefree night where everything is about them and that's all. Ladies Night is all about women to celebrate themselves, be themselves and enjoy a night without any worry of taking care of anyone." This year's sold-out event will be extra special, with the launch of a new support program for women in the community, 4VR Women. "Most ladies need a support, someone to talk to, someone to guide them and support them, and someone to encourage them to be

It is important for them to feel valued and acknowledged and sometimes even a cup of coffee can change lives," the spokeswoman said. The program is based on the idea that if women are happy and feel valued, their life and that of their whole family will change. In

a world where many young families struggle financially and work long hours, it is hoped the program will help mitigate stress and frustration and potentially, domestic violence as well. Already, many local businesses have come on board to support the program. "If you open one knot, it's a step forward to untangling the mesh," the spokeswoman said. "Through this program, we aim to reach out to women who are in need of being heard. We will hook them up with mentors who can guide them through their issues, help them upgrade their skill sets, mentor them for work and dealing with situations at home and make them independent even with kids." The program is not specific to any part of the community, the spokeswoman added - all are welcome to use the service or partner with it. Anyone interested in contributing to the program or who knows someone who might benefit from it is asked to get in touch with the Indian Association Cardinia Casey through Facebook.

Berwick’s belter Berwick's intensity from the opening bounce until the final siren simply can't be matched. Their premiership victory against Narre Warren on Saturday - giving the club back-toback flags for just the second time in club history - was intense, finals footy laced with the right amount of class. After a third premiership in four years, the word 'dynasty' is deservingly being bandied around, and for good reason.

Mr Muaremov said the time was right to take on new clients, who will be assigned to his team of four qualified accountants. “We have capped our client numbers for the last 10 years but my team is eager and ready to take on their own client loads,“ he explained. Mr Muaremov opened his eponymous business 20 years ago. He was headed for a life as a lawyer until the arrival of a daughter with wife Merita when he was barley 20 meant he had to eschew study for a paying job as a clerk. He eventually went back to school to study accounting and opened his own practice in 1999 when he was just 26. It turned out to be a fortunate turn of events. “I wouldn’t change a thing if I could have my life over again. I would have made a useless lawyer,“ he said, laughing. “I am about helping people. I wasn’t meant to be an accountant but I do love what I do.“ The firm has been based in its current office on the Old Princes Highway for 17 of its 20 years . Wife Merita has been by Michael’s side as the business has gone from strength to strength, and works in the office part- time Eldest daughter Fabiola has worked in the family business for 10 years and is now the practice manager. Second daughter Deanna has followed in her father’s footsteps and is an accountant.

Woolworths Shopping Centre 1-9 Lyall Road BERWICK

Third daughter Leonora is doing her VCE and hopes to become a mid-wife. Merita and his girls are complemented by what Michael calls his “practice family“. Business manager Romaine Nichols has been with Michael for 16 years and accountant Anne Bryan has been with him for 15 years. Associate accountants Katrina Villegas and Ali Kasemi have clocked up 10 years and 14 years respectively. Graduate accountant Kavi Kumar is the newest addition to the team. In return for their loyalty, Michael ensures his staff have opportunities to grow professionally. “One of the reasons they stay is because they don’t need to look for opportunities outside. I work to ensure people there are opportunities to grow professionally within the business.“ The firm handles the tax affairs of individuals including the self employed, sole traders, partnerships, companies, trusts and self managed superannuation funds. The team prepare and lodge tax returns and Business Activity Statements and work closely with business clients and investors. Plans are afoot for a 20 year celebration later this year that will include many of the firm’s most valued clients. The celebration will honour two decades in business for a firm which is proud to be known as the “happy accountants“.

Leading the way in green Beaconsfield Dental is proudly leading the way when it comes to running a green business. The popular Beaconsfield practice has been recognised at the Casey Cardinia Business Awards for its commitment to the environment, winning the Environmental and Sustainability Category in 2015, 2016 and 2017. The practice was a finalist in the 2016 Premier’s Sustainability Awards, winning it in 2018. They were also a finalist in the 2018 Melbourne Awards in the Sustainability Category. With 126 solar panels on its roof, the business is capable of generating more than 200 kWh per day. 2018 saw the generation of 32 megawatts of power. Water tanks, which hold up to 17,000 litres, supply garden water and toilet flush, saving over 60,000 litres per year. The garden has in-

digenous plants to complement the surrounding Akoonah Park, including native and indigenous edibles and a vegetable patch. Beaconsfield Dental owners Robert and Lisa Panjkov and their staff recycle used toothbrushes, empty toothpaste paste and floss containers with Colgate’s Terracycle. They also recycle paper, plastics, batteries, printer cartridges and computers. They make sure they purchase bio-degradable dental materials and offer a Tesla electric car charger for patients. Go to the source to keep things simple and sustainable Living sustainably doesn’t have to be hard believes the owner of The Source Bulk Foods, Naomi Wright. “Here at The Source Bulk foods Berwick we are dedicated to providing a sustainable way of shopping that is interactive, fun and most of all easy,“ Naomi said. “Think of us as a gigantic pantry where you can bring your reusable containers to fill with

as little or as much as you need. Buying your groceries is not the only way you can do your part to live more sustainably. We believe small changes can make a big impact. “Think of the 5 Rs - Refuse, Reduce, Repurpose and Rot - or just try to choose options that minimise waste. Too often we buy things we don’t need or throw away items that can be fixed, reused or composted. Even just saying no to single use plastic can make a difference.

“Plastic Free July is coming up and it is a great chance to make a pledge to refuse those plastics that are having a detrimental impact on our precious environment.“

The staff at The Source Bulk Foods are always happy to help so pop in and say hi to Naomi and the team and be a part of the zero waste revolution.

FOCUS ON … BEST LOCAL BUSINESS

Lots more fins to share By Danielle Kutchel A new location signals an exciting future for iconic family business, Lots of Fins. Owner Paul Furlong, who has 30 years' experience in fish keeping, said the move was necessary to cater for their clients. "We just found we've been so popular, the premise was too small. We wanted to expand to offer a bigger range of aquariums and fish supplies." Now located at the top of Victor Crescent, Lots of Fins offers a range of products, from small tanks ideal for families and children, through to bigger aquariums for enthusiasts. Paul said the shop offers many breeds of rare fish and underwater plants. "Without a shadow of a doubt, we have the biggest range of fish in Melbourne - over 300 species. We have a big range of aquatic live plants including lots of rare and unusual things." There are over 20 display tanks for customers to marvel at while they make their decisions. Paul runs the business with his wife and children, and in fact first got into the business when his boys got into the hobby as it allowed him to do a project with his family. After losing the business in a fire 15 years ago and being out of the business for 12, Paul said he re-established Lots of Fins three years ago in order to pour all his profits into his family's charity, Revive the Kids. The charity rescues orphans and slaves from around the world. Paul travels to various countries around the world for this purpose. "I've set free about 3000 people from slavery, and rescued about 500 orphans in places like Africa, the Philippines, Nepal, India and Burma. "I stand alone and travel alone so that all

the funds and profits can go 100 per cent to achieve what I'm doing and I'm not wasting any money," he said. Meanwhile, people from all over Victoria and even interstate travel to Narre Warren to see Lots of Fins, drawn, Paul said, by its repu-

tation, experience and the quality of its products. "To come and visit is an experience in itself, and every person is amazed when they come into the shop. It's an enjoyment just to browse," he said.

Visit Lots of Fins at 96 Victor Crescent, Narre Warren. The store is open 7 days a week, 10am to 6pm and 9pm on Fridays. Find out more at www.lotsoffinsaquarium.com.au, and learn more about Paul's charity, Revive the Kids at www.revivethekids.com.au.

HOME FOCUS

UNCONVENTIONAL OVER 55 LIVING AVIVA Communities Officer is a community created especially for people aged over 55. “When we started designing this community we threw away convention and started from scratch” said Managing Director of Aviva Communities Todd Strathdee.

“We didn’t want to follow traditional approaches where the old cottage or villa was the dominant housing form. We are thrilled with the end result which has seen the creation of modern energy efficient homes and an outstanding contemporary clubhouse that is more reflective of a younger spirited retiree.

Bunyip

“For years the focus has been on downsizing where people move from the old oversized family home into smaller more manageable dwellings. That’s not how we see it. At Aviva Communities Officer we believe the relocation process is more about right-sizing life where people simply want smarter, intelligently designed homes that suit a new life-stage and the activities that accompany it.“ Central to the success of the community are the masterplanned architect designed homes that are unrivalled in the over 55 landscape in Melbourne. Each home comprises a modern facade that blends organically with the neighbouring homes to maximise privacy and create eye-catching streetscapes. Every home is also oriented to take advantage of a northern living aspect. Not only does this reduce the need for artificial heating and cooling, but it provides homeowners with the most direct sunlight during the day, especially in winter when the sun is at its lowest. “All homes achieve a minimum 6-star energy rating created not only from the orientation of the home, but the insulation of the home’s walls, floor and roof spaces”.

Inside the home there is a sense of spaciousness created by 2.7m ceilings, integrated storage solutions and strategic window placement. Improving the design outcomes of the community is the use of planting and fencing solutions to separate dwellings and create privacy in the home’s living areas and outdoor zones. No expansive tracts of confining metal fencing are used in the community. Inside the homes are a range of inclusions such as stone benchtops, stainless steel kitchen appliances, engineered timber floors, tiles and carpets, ducted heating and cooling, window furnishings and all the extras that make moving in simple. All homes in the community are within walking distance of the expansive Gum Scrub Creek Nature Reserve and The Lodge, a private clubhouse for Aviva Officer homeowners. Homes at Aviva Communities have also been created with a focus on value for money. If you take advantage of prerelease purchase benefits homes start at $379,000 for a 2-bedroom 14.9 square home going to $475,000 for a 3-bedroom 18.5 square home. People who register their interest in the project automatically qualify for pre-release purchase benefits which see a range of discounts from $10,000 to $24,000 applicable to the home range. Aviva Communities Officer is under construction now. To register your interest, arrange an appointment and to take advantage of pre-release purchase benefits call 1800 961 585 or register on www.avivacommunities.com.au ●

FOCUS ON .... BEST LOCAL BUSINESS

Auto driven by success Many readers will be familiar with the Autobarn store in Narre Warren. But what readers may not know is that this fantastic local retailer is a proud family business with a long history in the automotive industry. In fact, the family connection goes right back to before Autobarn existed. In March 1977,Graeme Sheedy opened his own automotive parts store, known as Warragul Auto Accessories. In August 1985, Graeme and 9 other like-minded automotive retailers came together and decided to create a buying and marketing group, this was the beginning of the Autobarn. Graeme’s son, Gavin, started working alongside his father at Autobarn Warragul in 1990 and continued to do so until Graeme sold the business in 1993. However, Gavin wasn’t done. He continued with his passion for all things automotive and moved into a role with Autobarn head office as part of the merchandising team. Gavin then spent the next 6 years travelling to many destinations Australia wide setting up new franchise stores. Gavin met his wife, Nicole, while setting up a country store. They married in 1999 and Gavin decided to transfer from his head office role to the newly established Narre Warren store later that year. Since then the store has gone from strength to strength and continues to be a leader within the Autobarn group, collecting several prestigious awards along the way.

In 2004 Gavin and Nicole welcomed their daughter Ashley and became owners of the Narre Warren store in 2005. Ashley gained exposure to the operations of the store through many years of visiting her father at work and finally joined the team in an official capacity earlier this year. Gavin and Nicole’s son Joshua was born in 2007 and like his older sister has gained exposure to the business on the regular visits. Joshua is also sure to be part of the Narre Warren team in the future. Gavin attributes much of his success to what he learnt from his parents and his time in the shop when he was younger. He believes that no matter what Ashley and Joshua choose to do in the future, the skills they learn from retail and customer service will give them a very good start on the road to success.

Harkaway Hills College was founded in 2016 with 13 students in Foundation and Year 1. A sister school to Tangara School for Girls, Redfield College, Wollemi College and Montgrove College in Sydney, Harkaway Hills has a goal to assist parents in the character development of their children. Over the past three years, Harkaway Hills College has developed an outstanding reputation for quality curriculum, incorporating both traditional learning, including a phonicsbased literacy program, as well as cutting edge programs such as interactive hands-on mathematics, coding and robotics. However, the reputation of Harkaway Hills is based on much more than academics. “We recognise that we have an important role not only to offer excellent curriculum but also and to assist parents to raise their children with a love for all that is good, true and beautiful,” Principal of Harkaway Hills College Mary Broadsmith said. Every child at Harkaway Hills College has a mentor to guide them as they grow into young men and women of character. Parents are explicitly supported as they work as a family to instil virtues, an understanding of service, and instruction of the Catholic faith in their children. As the demand for such a personal system of education has grown, Harkaway Hills has

FOCUS ON … ENROLMENTS 2020

The world is their stage Recently St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar School hosted its annual Master’s Recital, a high-level performance event that showcased the school’s highest achieving musicians in a special gala concert. The leading performance of the evening took home the prestigious title of ‘Master Performer’ and a $500 cash prize. This is year the performances were adjudi-

cated by two of Australia’s leading music specialists; Andrew Wailes, Artistic Director with the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra and Jayne Turner, consultant with the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority for the Arts. New to the role in 2019, the school’s Director of Music Marten Visser said that there were a record number of applicants for the recital.

"We had over 35 audition, with the minimum standard being Grade 7 AMEB level. It’s a positive reflection on our school community to have such a cohort of high achieving musicians," Mr Visser said. The showcase performance had a wide range of music from Mozart to Beethoven, Schumann and Gounod. There was also contemporary music from musical theatre and contemporary artists.

This year’s winning performance was from two outstanding vocalists, Maddison Padula and Natasha Pearson who performed the duet ‘If Mamma was Married” from the musical Gypsy. More information about the outstanding Performing Arts program at St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar School can be found on the website or by calling 9703 8111.

SPORT

Worth their weight in gold By Russell Bennett The upcoming 'Deadlift for Depression 2' will be held specifically for people carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders, by those who only want to lighten the burden. It's the simple, yet incredibly powerful message spurring on those behind south-east powerlifting gyms 'Evolv: Healthy Bodies' and 'Peninsula Barbell'. The second, annual Deadlift for Depression event will be held at a humble Somerville gym next month with the simple aim of raising as much money as possible for mental health organisation, Beyond Blue. And if last year's inaugural event is any indicator - with over $10,000 raised in 2018 - they could be set to record a staggering personal best this time around. One of the lifters taking part this year is Blind Bight local, and former Tooradin Cricket Club president, Kane Latham. Deadlift for Depression 2 is particularly close to his heart, with two of his friends taking their own lives after prolonged mental health battles. At next month's event, Latham is aiming to record a whopping 600-pound (or 272-kilogram) deadlift in their memory. Those who sign up to compete in this year's event will donate, upon entry, at least $30 each directly to Beyond Blue. So far, well in excess of $1000 has been raised through competition sign-ups alone from which there's no monetary interest to the gym. "Being a deadlift-only competition, a lot of the people here are already training elsewhere or have a coach somewhere else," Latham explained from the Somerville gym recently. "This is just about getting everybody together for the cause." Matthew Bund - the owner of Peninsula Barbell - explained that the concept of the event was the brainchild of Jackson Drew, from Evolv. The two have come together, as key cogs of the south east powerlifting scene, to gather as much momentum as possible for the cause. "In thinking of all the different charities we could raise money for, mental health probably had the broadest spectrum - it can literally affect anyone," Bund said. "After we held the first event, we found that a lot of our gym members had been affected by their own mental health battles too. We didn't realise the extent of it until after the event, but it really helped them open up." For many, there's still a very real stigma surrounding mental health battles, but Bund explained "this can help to break those barriers down". There will be about 40 participants competing on the day - on 21 July at Factory 6/4 Guelph Street, Somerville. The likelihood is that all of those competing

Kane Latham, Matthew Bund, and Jackson Drew are right behind the 'Deadlift for Depression' concept. 194926 on the day would have been touched by mental health battles in some way, shape, or form - either directly, or indirectly. "It's why I wanted to run it," Drew said. "I've got friends who've lost people, and it's horrible. It can just happen so quickly, out of nowhere. "This is just lifting weights off the floor, but if as much money as possible can go towards an organisation that supports people in need, then that's all that matters. I want to run this bigger, and better, every year." Drew was quick to add that anyone is welcome to the event on the day - whether they're lifting, or not. "Everyone wants to help - to be a part of the raffle, or to help out on the day," he said. "We also want people to just come down and be a part of the day, and not even necessarily have to do anything except show their support. That could mean something as simple as reaching out to someone and talking with them - making sure they're ok.

"The event, itself, is a platform that we can use to raise some much-needed money but we also want to help people feel better about themselves. "This is a friendly, welcoming environment and we just want people to feel comfortable in their own skin." Latham pointed out just how strong the support network is within the burgeoning powerlifting community, particularly in the south east. "I know if I'm having a bit of a rough patch - whatever it may be - I'll just come down and train, and so many other members are the same," he said. "We're really lucky in Australia to have such a rich powerlifting community. It's really tightknit - everyone knows everyone, particularly down this way in the south-east. "People need to see that there's really a huge support network within powerlifting that it's not like what some people from the outside make it out to be."

Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT

Drew explained that anyone, and everyone is welcome on the day - regardless of which gym they're a part of. "Gyms can be quite competitive, but when we put our hands up to host this Deadlift for Depression event, everyone comes out of the woodwork in support of it," he said. "We're 100 per cent for the fundraising, and 100 per cent for the people. I want people to know that we're right behind this. "And for lifters - you don't have to lift anything more than your bodyweight. Hell, you don't even have to lift anything more than the bar. Just rock up, and show your support. "Even if we can help one person by doing this, it's worth it. Everyone needs a support network, and we're more than happy to provide that." Cavaliers make it 10 in a row as they lead the way By Hayley Wildes It was a tough weekend for the senior Casey Big V teams, but the junior Cavs scored impressive wins. The Championship men took on Hume City - one of the best teams in the competition - and fell short in a high-scoring affair. The Cavs got strong contributions from across the board, highlighted by six players scoring in double figures, but the Broncos also got an incredibly even output to score a 125110 win. Raheem Lemons (21 points, 16 rebounds, 8 assists, 3 steals and 3 blocks) almost recorded a triple-double and was on another level as he attempted to put the team on his back, while Brandon Polk (20 points and 9 rebounds) was also impressive. The loss saw the Cavs fall to 12-5 on the season to sit third. The Championship women slumped to their eighth loss in a row, falling agonisingly short of Hume City. 36 STAR NEWS

Coach Brad Rooff has led the Casey Youth League 1 women's team to a 10-game winning Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS streak. 192343 With stars Sarah Halejian (21 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals) and Toccara Ross (21 points and 7 rebounds) doing all they could, the Cavs were in the contest all the way. With 12 seconds on the clock, Halejian tied the scores with a monster triple, but the Broncos responded with a lay-up to claim a 72-70 win. With a 4-9 record, the Cavs sit eighth.

The Youth League 1 women made it a perfect 10 against Craigieburn at Casey Stadium on Saturday night as they won their 10th game in a row. The Cavs were too good for the Eagles as a total team effort saw them claim an 80-67 win. Bec Peacock (13 points and 9 rebounds), Tess Young (12 rebounds and 11 points) and Steph Leclerc (9 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals) were electric for the ladder-leading Cavs, who boast a 13-2 record. The Youth League 2 men returned to the winners' list with a win over Sunbury at home on Saturday night. With five players scoring in double figures - led by a monster outing from Blake Taylor (26 points and 17 rebounds) Casey came away with a 97-85 win. The Cavs (11-6) sit fourth on the ladder. Looking ahead, Casey Stadium will host two massive Round 14 clashes on Saturday night. First up, the top of the table Youth League 1 women face third-placed Warrandyte at 6pm, before the Youth League 1 men take on second-placed Geelong.

Meanwhile, the Championship women hit the road on Saturday night to take on Sunbury and the Championship men travel to Werribee on Sunday. Furthermore, in exciting news for the Casey Basketball program, two rising stars have been selected to under-18 School Sport Victoria (SSV) basketball teams. Lauren Tuplin will be representing SSV in the under-18 girls national basketball championships, while Blake Taylor will suit up for SSV in the under-18 boys national basketball championships. Both championships are being held in Bendigo in August. Tuplin helped the Cavs claim the Youth League 2 women's championship last season and is dominating in the Youth League 1 women's competition this season; averaging 17 points, 5 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. Taylor is starring for Casey in the Youth League 1 men's competition, averaging 19 points, 8 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game, while also often suiting up for the Championship men as well. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE ROUND 10 Noble Park got back on the winners' list with a hard-fought win over Doncaster. The Bulls were inaccurate in front of goal, but the performance of Kyle Martin steadied the ship enough to see Noble Park claim a sixpoint win, 10.16 (76) to 11.4 (70). Leading by 19 points at the final break, the Bulls staved off a fast-finishing Sharks team as Jordan Marson (three goals) and Luke Nelson (two goals) put through important goals. The game was on the line in the final few minutes, but the Bulls held the Sharks out in a frantic finish as a draw was very much on the cards. With the win, the Bulls move to 4-6 on the season and currently sit seventh on the ladder. Meanwhile, Rowville was a class above North Ringwood in their encounter at Seebeck Oval. The Hawks jumped out to a 20-point quarter-time lead and, with Damian Garner (four goals) tearing the game apart, never looked back as they went on to record a 35-point win, 15.9 (99) to 8.16 (64). Rowville took the foot off the gas in the final term to be outscored three goals to one, but it mattered little as the result was well beyond doubt at that point. While Garner was in dominant form, Riley D'Arcy (four goals) was equally important up forward and Ziggie Alwan (two goals) also played a key role. Rowville improves to the impressive record of 8-2 on the season and sits third on the ladder. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 10 After taking ladder leaders Springvale Districts to the cleaners in Round 9, Keysborough came crashing back to earth on Saturday, falling to Murrumbeena by 35 points, 14.13 (97) to 9.8 (62). The Lions jumped out to an early lead and were in total control all day as Nicholas Brazil (five goals) and Matthew Lello ran riot. Despite the loss, Tim Edwards (three goals) and Aaron McIlroy gave their all for the Burras. The Doveton Eagles also suffered a defeat, falling to Hampton in a tight affair. The Eagles were led by Jarrod O'Neil (six goals) who was in sparkling form up forward, but it wasn't enough as the likes of Mark Devereaux and Luke Hayes (three goals each)

helped the Hammers claim a hard-fought 11-point win, 14.11 (95) to 12.12 (84). DIVISION 3 - ROUND 10 Hampton Park continued its perfect season by claiming its ninth win in as many games. The Redbacks were ruthless against Cerberus and held their opponents scoreless for three quarters to lead by an incredible 119 points with a quarter to play. Finally, Cerberus broke through for a major in the final term, but it meant little as Hampton Park ran out 159-point winners, 25.16 (166) to 1.1 (7). Peter Dye (six goals) and Aaron Thornton (four goals) did as they pleased up forward, while Sean Winsall and Ryan Pearson (two goals) were dominant across the ground. Endeavour Hills attempted a comeback against Ashwood, but it wasn't enough as the Falcons lost by seven points, 9.9 (63) to 8.8 (56). Jarrod Marolla (six goals) tried his best to drag Endeavour Hills over the line, but there weren't enough contributors on the day for the Falcons. DIVISION 4 - ROUND 10 Hallam made it two wins on the trot with a big win over Dandenong. The Hawks kept the Redlegs goalless in the second half and Jack Sharlassian (four goals) and Sam Ferrari (two goals) were in fine form. The Hawks eventually ran out 69-point winners, 14.12 (96) to 4.3 (27). Despite inaccuracy in front of goal in the first half, Lyndhurst completely dominated Lyndale from start to finish. After kicking 4.10 (34) in the first half, the Lightning found their range in the third quarter to put through seven goals while holding the Pumas goalless. With David Ford and Hamish Browning (four goals each) forming a dangerous duo up forward, Lyndhurst ran out 104-point winners, 16.18 (114) to 1.4 (10). VFLW ROUND 7 The Casey Demons dropped their third game in a row, falling to Geelong on the road on Saturday. The Cats jumped out to a 12-point lead after the first term and built on that advantage in the second half as Danielle Orr (three goals) proved the difference up forward. Casey's defence found it tough going and they just couldn't contain Geelong's dangerous options in the forward half. Chantel Emonson and Harriet Cordner were best for the Demons in the 8.8 (56) to 4.3 (27) loss.

After 13 rounds of the VNL season, the Casey Demons are in the thick of the finals hunt. With five rounds remaining, the Demons own a 6-7 record to sit in fifth position after taking care of the third-placed North East Blaze - a team that had only suffered one loss prior to their match-up. It was a win that was necessary to keep Casey in touch with the all-important top four. After a close game for three quarters, Casey's defence went up to another gear and North East couldn't respond in what was a dominant fourth quarter from the Demons. The pressure of goal defence Demi Woodlock, along with Kassidy Withers and Christie Hillberg in the middle, was too much for the Blaze and they could only muster 11 shots for the quarter, compared to 20 for the Demons. That pressure and defence resulted in arguably Casey's best win of its inaugural VNL season, defeating the Blaze 65-53. Taking down a team that had only suffered one loss in 12 games, the Demons kept their finals dreams well and truly alive in impressive fashion. Emma Ryde (51/60 goals) and Erin Bell (14/21) were a great pairing in attack, while Withers and Hillberg played vital roles across the court. With so much on the line in the final rounds of the season, the Demons are going to need everyone playing their part. Superstars Bell and Ryde will have a huge say in the business end of the season, while Karli Foster and Withers are just as crucial in defence and attack, respectively. Eagles prevail in a thriller OUTER EAST FOOTBALL PREMIER DIVISION - ROUND 9 There would have been plenty of anxious moments in the Beaconsfield coaching box after Woori Yallock got off to a stunning start with the first three goals in a matter of just 10 minutes on Saturday. The Tigers looked up and about in the early stages of the inaugural Russell Rowe Shield at Holm Park, named after a legend of both football clubs, playing a relentless, surging brand of football in the driving rain. But Leigh McQuillen's side is a different beast to previous years, and has grown substantially in the space of just nine weeks of the Outer East Premier Division season. It was an important test for the Eagles, but they stood up when it counted, kicking six goals to three after quarter time in almost torrential conditions to move into third spot and within striking distance of Berwick and Narre Warren at the top, 7.13 (55) to 6.12 (48). "They (Woori Yallock) adjusted to it a lot better early on," McQuillen said of the start of the match. "It really suited their repeat stoppage players, and made it hard for us to get speed on the game with the track being so heavy. "We had to mix up the players we had in there and add some size inside to bullock our way outside and get our runners involved. "The most pleasing part for us is that twice Woori got out to a three goal leads in heavy conditions and we responded both times. To grind a win like that in heavy conditions is a fantastic result." A grind is probably the most perfect description of the result, there was almost no flashiness, just honest, wet-weather football. After taking in an early lead, the Eagles still couldn't get their game up to scratch in the second term, and the Tigers - once again - utilised their bigger bodies to kick two late goals and take in a three-goal lead at the major break. The tone was set early by midfielder Jack Griffiths - who in the midst of his finest game so far at the Eagles - kicked a crucial goal to kick off the home side's run in the secondhalf, which included a further three for the third term as the visitors struggled to contain the abundance of attacking threats. The Tigers threw all they could leading into their bye in a thrilling final quarter, but the Eagles' stingy defense, combined with pivotal moments from their leaders such as Griffiths and Brad Homfray saw them hold firm and claim a gritty win, with the scores level as deep as 20 minutes into the final quarter before the Eagles could find enough power to find the match-winner. Griffiths relished the conditions to be best afield, while Jake Bowd was also excellent for the Eagles with his razor-sharp foot skills. For the visitors, Jake Matthews was everywhere with three majors, while Zach Monkhorst had a big impact. McQuillen didn't downplay the significance of Saturday's win, describing it as the perfect tune-up for what could be coming for his side in coming months. "We lose that one and we go eight points adrift of third," he said. "We win (and) we go to third, win our fourth in a row and have a very healthy percentage. "Grind is the key word and in the past two seasons we lost a lot of those so to now have won two (Olinda and Woori) where we came from behind has given us great belief." Elsewhere, Cranbourne, as expected, took care of business against Upwey Tecoma at home, 17.13 (115) to 3.4 (22). Coming off three consecutive losses, the

Doveton forward Sean Kelleher takes this strong grab before going back and slotting a goal. 194760 Eagles were always going to respond on their home deck, controlling proceedings from start to finish and gain some momentum back. The fifth-placed Eagles got off to the best possible start, kicking away in the first term with 11 scoring shots to one to open up a 40-point lead, which soon ballooned to 62 at the major break. While the Tigers showed some fight to keep the final margin under 100 points, the Eagles enjoyed nine individual goal kickers, with Tom

Marks, Jake Cowburn and Corey Ellison each snaring three goals, while Bailey Buntine's brilliant recent form continued with another assured display. In the final game of the round, Wandin held off a fast-finishing Olinda Ferny Creek to keep in touch with the top-five, 13.9 (87) to 11.16 (82). Berwick and Narre Warren played their Round 9 clash as a standalone match prior to the start of the season.

In Division 1, Doveton ventured down to Starling Road to take on a highly-emotional, in-form Officer side, and coming away with a solid victory, 11.6 (72) to 8.10 (58). Back on Good Friday, the Doves gave the Kangaroos an almighty touch up to begin the AFL Outer East season, but since then, Doug Koop's side has bounced back in a big way, showcasing the credentials that had them as one of the most talked about sides in the competition in the pre-season. With the emotion of favourite son Ben Tivendale's record-breaking occasion - combined with a side beaming with confidence after four-straight wins on its home deck - The Doves knew they were encountering a completely different side to that of early in the year. "We knew it was going to be a big game; they've improved over the course of the season," coach Daniel Charles said. "We caught them unawares the first time we played them, and we knew they'd be more ready to go. "All the talk (in the pre-season) was on them winning the flag, and being favourites, and us not winning a game last year, it was probably easy to just pencil that Good Friday one down as a win, and they might have done that the first time. "And this time, we knew they weren't going to do that, we knew it would be a tougher ask, and they're a good side." In reality, the Kangaroos should have been further ahead at the major break after taking in a four-point lead at quarter time and also a four-point advantage at half-time, despite dominating a lot of the play around the ground. While there were certainly plenty of ebbs and flows of momentum, the class of the likes of Matthew Clarke (three goals) and recruit Brent Moloney - as well as the skills of Tyler Clark - caused plenty of headaches, but the Doves crucially kept themselves in the contest with their physicality at the contest and desperation in defence. With their back-six playing superbly, the Doves started translating some dominance on the scoreboard, with the visitors kicking four goals to one in the game-winning third quarter surge, before holding firm once more to knock off the 'Roos for the second time this season. Charles said that his side is still finding its right mix after a hefty player turnover in the off-season, but said that the best is yet to come for his side in the second-half of the season. "We got off to a good start on Good Friday, and with the emotion of that game, everyone sort of put themselves up and it was a massive relief, and it took us a while to get going again," he said. "I think over the last few weeks, pretty much since the Mount Evelyn game, we've been on the improve, and we're getting better. "We've got a brand new side, I think in Round 1 we had 11 that played the year before, and since then, we've had even less. "We've played eight first year players this year, so they're finding their feet, and with injuries, there have been some opportunities for young blokes. "It takes time, we were hoping we would be playing our best football towards the second half of the year, and that's just a waiting game to see how it happens." In other games, Monbulk extended its undefeated run for yet another week, completely dismantling Belgrave at home, 24.12 (156) to 4.8 (32), Pakenham, also chugged out yet another impressive win, this time against Emerald at Chandler Reserve, 15.12 (102) to 7.4 (46), while Warburton Millgrove stunned a wayward Mount Evelyn at home in a major upset, 8.5 (53) to 6.15 (51). 12417297-FA19-19
