THE SHIRE ON TOUR
THE LATEST IN NEWS
Tenterfield Shire Council staff have completed a whirlwind tour of the shire region, holding public meetings to engage the local communities on matters of interest and concern. On Monday 3 June the initial Community Engagement Forum at Drake, focusing on “Our Society” saw a small but enthusiastic group of residents turn out to discuss issues such as town signage, footpaths/streetscape, and to consider opportunities for tourism in the area. A small group of Legume residents met with council staff on Tuesday 4 June, this time focusing on “Our Environment”. With a substantial amount of work going on in Legume, such as the upgrade of the Killarney Road/Mt Lindesay Road intersection and upgrades to the community hall, the forum provided an opportunity for council to receive feedback on how these works are progressing and any resultant impacts on the community. On Wednesday 5 June the Tenterfield School of Arts provided the venue for the final Community Engagement Forum in this round, focusing on “Our Economy”. Despite the cold, wet weather, approximately 25 community members were in attendance.

PALGROVE PASTORAL IN FIRST PLACE BY ABBEY CANNAN A local producer has once again claimed a first-place position in the first phase of the RNA’s prestigious Paddock to Palate Competition presented by Mort & Co at Grassdale Feedlot in Dalby on Tuesday 25 June. Palgrove Pastoral Company’s Charolais from Dalveen took out first place in Class 37A for ‘Best Weight Gain - Pen of Six’, weighing in with an ADG of 3.095kg. Paddock to Palate is three phased comprising best aggregate weight gain; a carcass competition and an MSA eating quality competition, while the 2018/19 Wagyu Challenge is four phased finishing in a beef taste off judged by some of Queensland’s top chefs. The exhibitors who poll the highest aggregate scores across all phases of the four classes, will be awarded the overall prizes at an awards presentation dinner during the Royal Queensland Show (Ekka)’s Beef Week on Wednesday 7 August. David Bondfield from Palgrove Pastoral Company said there was 25 per cent more cattle at the competition this year compared to the year before. “On the back of the drought it was good to see a really strong nomination,” David said. “We are really excited about the win in this category and we’ve been fortunate enough to have previously won the weight
David Bondfield from Palgrove Pastoral Company with his 1st place ribbon for Class 37A. gain section overall in 2018. “There are still two more phases of the competition but we are sitting in a good position, not necessarily to be the overall winner but at this stage we are leading on points.”
David said he has no expectations in regards to taking out the top prize again but he would be thrilled if they did. “The competition is very close. To win it once was very exciting and to win it twice would be amazing,” he said.
“The competition has been running for nine years and we have been entering for the last five years. “It’s a really good competition as it represents the quality of the product that comes from the beef supply chain from the farmer, the producer to the manufacturers and lastly to the consumer. “Our steers will be featured at the Brisbane exhibition at the Regatta Boathouse Restaurant as part of the Ekka beef promotion. “I don’t know how to put it nicely but they will be on the menu for the beef brand Royal 100.” RNA Beef Cattle Committee Chair Gary Noller said it was pleasing to see 889 head of cattle entered in the competition this year, despite the drought. “Our entry numbers are the highest they’ve been since 2015, which shows just how resilient and determined our beef cattle producers are and how valuable the data from this competition is for their breeding programs,” he said. “We were thrilled to see more than 200 head of those cattle entered in our new HGP free export class, especially with consumer demand for HGP free beef rising.” Both the Paddock to Palate Competition and Wagyu Challenge will now move onto the second phase - a carcass competition. ●
MAN WALKS OVER 620KM TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THE MATES Andreas Leonakis is currently completing his fourth annual Solo Anzac Remembrance walk for The Battle of Crete, raising much needed funds for Mates4Mates at Milton. Along his 620km trek, Andreas has shared the remarkable historical event with local communities whilst raising funds for Mates4Mates, an organisation which provides much needed services for returned veterans and their families, through many different rehabilitation and educational programs. Andreas first began his trek at the Paniyiri Festival, going up through Cunninghams Gap. Once he arrived in the Southern Downs he continued through to Warwick, Killarney, Stanthorpe and onto the border of Queensland and New South Wales at Wallangarra and then back again.
This year, Andreas has done the walk to mark the 78th anniversary of the Battle of Crete, which was one of the most significant, and most under reported battles of World War II. This last battle for the defence of Greece against the Nazis was critical in leading to the ultimate defeat of Hitler, and a direct bearing on the freedoms we enjoy here, today. Through this conflict in Crete, it formed an everlasting relationship and bond between the Cretans and Anzac forces. Many Cretans sacrificed their own lives in order for the Anzacs to live. To follow Andreas on his journey, head to his Facebook page: Battle of Crete ANZAC Remembrance Walk. ●

Mo Skett with her friend Vilma.
UNPREDICTABLE LIFE BY ABBEY CANNAN
S
ome people choose to never leave the town they were born in, whilst others leave to travel the world. Are people just curious about other cultures or do they feel a belonging to somewhere else in the world? Allora local Mo Skett has lived a completely unpredictable life, travelling far and wide and experiencing things she only ever dreamt about. Now she has taken pen to paper to write an autobiography which will be launched at the Warwick library on Friday 19 July from 10.30am. "Once you have travelled far from home, it is almost impossible to stay in one place for long, until you find that perfect place you can call home once more," Mo said in her autobiography, Nine Lives. Mo found that perfect place to call home in the town of Allora, after spending her life exploring the world. "We are now living in Allora between
Toowoomba and Warwick, where we moved to from the Gympie area in 2015. We moved here to be closer to our son and his family who live near Toowoomba, and we now have a granddaughter and another on the way; and partly due to our age. But we still miss the open spaces and natural bush - for it has been over 40 years since we had neighbours that you can see or hear. I have been 'officially' retired for about 18 years and now just potter about and do a little art when motivated," Mo said.Mo was born in England during the Second World War and grew up in a loving family in Surrey and Kent. Upon leaving school Mo travelled up to London each day to college and later to where she worked for two years in the Commonwealth Relations Office. At the age of 21 she was sent out to Lagos, Nigeria to serve as an Accountant in the British High Commission. She travelled extensively in the neighbouring countries including a trip to Timbuctoo, until she left just as the Civil War began. She was
then posted to Karachi, Pakistan, again as the Accountant in the High Commission. Now the C.R.O. merged with the Foreign Office and became the Diplomatic Service. Whilst in Karachi, she was able to travel with friends up north and then west to Afghanistan up the Khyber Pass to Kabul. Not wanting to continue in the Service she resigned and migrated to Western Australia in 1967. "I very recently found a box full of letters that I had written home during the 1960's when living and working for the Diplomatic Service which brought not only memories back but including events that I had completely forgotten about. I chose the front cover as it is one of my favourite paintings and the back cover with the Tuareg designs that I did for an exhibition 'Blue', one of many that I exhibited in with other members of our Inkubations Printmaking Group in Gympie. I loved the Sahara and its people. I now know that I just love deserts in general. The Australian ones not quite as
hostile maybe, but still full of interest and life, away from noise and lots of people," Mo said. In Western Australia Mo joined the Commonwealth Employment Service, serving in Perth and Albany before transferring to the Arbitration Inspectorate, and then back to the Employment branch. She was sent to Melbourne for three months and there she met her husband to be. Later living back in Perth and now married she took leave and she and her husband moved to the Goldfields, where they re-opened an old gold mine and lived isolated in the bush until she was seven months pregnant when the local Station owner offered them a house and part-time work. Eventually they moved to Kalgoorlie where she became involved with the Pony Club whilst continuing to look after her young son. Mo then reached her lifelong dream of acquiring horses whilst her husband and business partner continued working as prospectors.

Mo Skett riding a camel in the Sahara Desert.
Mo Skett will launch her autobiography ''Nine Lives'' at the Warwick library.
Mo Skett travelling in Peru. helping to clear out my parent's house, when I came across some letters that my parents had written to each other when courting. I realised then that I knew very little about their lives before they became my mother and father. With two World Wars and the Great Depression life was so different then. I also realised how different life was too when I was young, to what it is becoming now. As I have had quite an interesting life,
Eventually they made enough money to buy a farm near Northam and began a Cashmere Goat Stud. After several years and the stock market crash of 1988 there was another move - then to Queensland in 1991 where they continued farming but this time with cattle and grain on the Condamine River near Dalby. "After my father died in 1991 and my mother went into a nursing home, I was
I think, with working and traveling in many other countries, I thought that my son, who was born shortly after my 38th birthday, would like to know more about his mum's life. This story would be passed down to my grandchildren too. What will they experience in their lifetime?" Mo said. "I began writing the basics of my story in the mid 1990's and have added bits and rewritten parts again and again. Like painting a picture, when do you stop? Life keeps on evolving and even in retirement, different paths keep cropping up, and memories that have lain hidden, often resurface." With more floods and droughts, Mo and her partner sold up again and moved to near Gympie and bought an orchard. Until there was more floods - so this time, in 1999, they sold up and 'retired'. Mo then became a full-time artist, exhibiting in several galleries on the Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay areas. She worked mainly in mixed media and later took up paper and printmaking as well as making hand-made artists books. The next venture was to attend a twoyear part-time course in Byron Bay, learning spiritual energy healing taught by the Four
Winds based on the teachings of the Laika and Q'ero Shamans of Peru. Mo then began running classes and workshops to help people become healthier and happier and generally to improve their lives using the methods learnt. For various reasons she and her husband had to leave this 'life' and so they sold up and moved to Allora to be closer to their one and only son and his family. Mo said she is looking forward to her book launch at the Warwick library and she hopes that people will be inspired to achieve things they never thought they could do. "Most of all, I would like the reader to have a more open mind to what is possible," she said. "Of course life is so different now to the life that I have experienced and maybe it is almost impossible to actually do some of the things I have been able to do, but there are so many other things that are possible now that we never dreamt about 50 or so years ago." To meet Mo and to pick up a copy of her autobiography, head to the Warwick library on Friday 19 July from 10.30am or the Allora RSL on Saturday 20 July from 9am. ●

GARDEN TIME
BEATRICE HAWKINS
FLOWERS WITH POWERS TO ENTICE YOU As you are driving through the industrial estate in Warwick I hope you notice a new building with something different painted on its walls. I like things that are a bit out of the ordinary and show someone thinking outside the box and this fills both those criteria. Full height on this very large new building, are depictions of assorted flowers done very nicely in green on a white background. Each flower is named with both the common and botanical name. The first one I recognised was Echinacea purpurea, commonly known as purple cone flower, does well in gardens as a decorative flower but also has many uses in naturopathy for treating ailments and virus infections such as the common cold and ‘flu and for strengthening the immune system. It grows to about two to three feet (6090cm) in height and has purple/pink daisy flowers with a central brown seed head. It is a perennial, dying down in winter but appearing again in spring. Eschcholgica californica, commonly known California poppy, that bright and happy orange, yellow or cream flower that grows like a weed in sandy soil and survives well in a dry time and comes back year after year from seed that falls each season. Native Americans have used it for many years. It is used to promote relaxation and to treat depression, long term mental and physical tiredness, nerve pain plus a variety of other ailments.
Echinacea purpurea.
Centella asiatica, commonly known as Gotu kola or asiatic pennywort is a frost tender flowering herb. It is native to the wetlands of Asia but grows wild over a large area of North and South America and Australia and is used as a vegetable and as a medicinal herb. As a vegetable, Thai people use it to make a drink sweetened with palm sugar while Sri Lankans make a sambal with the leaves, fresh coconut and lime juice. It is used medicinally to treat fatigue, anxiety, depression Alzheimers and for improving memory and brain function. Passiflora incarnata or passion fruit flower has been used medicinally since the 16th century and is said to help insomnia and anxiety. Apparently a clinical study in 2016 found that it decreased anxiety and
improved memory in rats. Calendula officinalis is another one of the flowers depicted and is the bright orange or yellow common variety that we all know in our gardens. It is such an old plant that its origin is not really known but is believed to be Europe. It is the birth flower for October and is characterised by contentment, excellence gratitude and love for nature. Some of its suggested uses medicinally are for treating sore throat, stomach ulcers and is applied to the skin to reduce pain and swelling and to treat poorly healing wounds and leg ulcers. Valerian is the last one to be seen on the side wall of the building. It is a flowering perennial plant and may reach a height to 1.5 metres with sweetly scent pink or white flowers.

Eschcholgica californica.
It seems that it is the root that is used in herbal medicine and is said to help with sleep disorders and anxiety. It is an easy plant to grow, is cold but not frost hardy, and may become invasive if care is not taken. The way to prevent this is to keep the pretty delicate, perfumed flowers cut before they seed, as they make pretty cut flowers, or by growing it in a pot where the plant can be contained. I hope that you will have a new appreciation for these decorative and useful plants and for businesses that think outside the square. All this information is from the internet and anecdotal and certainly not intended to be read as an endorsement for the uses of any of these herbs. They should definitely not be used unless directed by your doctor, naturopath or herbalist. All can be grown in the garden and are decorative and this is what intrigues me about them. The next event for the Horticultural Society is the Gardening Extravaganza during Jumpers and Jazz in July. The Extravaganza will be held on Wednesday and Thursday 24-25 July. For something different come to St Mary’s Hall in Wood Street and see a wide range of plants and things to do with gardening. A range of warming soups served with bread will be available along with scones, jam and cream, barrista coffee, pots of tea and delicious slices and cakes.

PREPARE FOR FIRE SEASON NOW Firefighters are urging south-west Queensland residents to obtain a Permit to Light Fire when reducing fuel loads on their properties ahead of bushfire season. Local burning restrictions are already in place for some areas in the Southern Downs. Acting Rural Fire Service (RFS) Regional Manager Tim Chittenden said it was imperative that residents were preparing their properties now. “We are now only talking a matter of weeks, rather than months, before bushfire season is upon us due to tinder dry conditions across the region,” Mr Chittenden said. “Residents are responsible for managing fuel loads on their properties and should take appropriate steps to obtain a permit if they wish to conduct hazard reduction burns.
“Permits are required for fires bigger than two metres in any direction and come with clear guidelines for when you can light the fire and what precautions need to be taken, such as informing neighbours.” Mr Chittenden said permits were designed to provide landholders with a key set of instructions and conditions to follow. “Permit to Light Fire provides the permit holder with indemnity when the conditions
are followed correctly,” he said. “Permits are free and easy to apply for, and are issued by a local fire warden who understands the conditions and local requirements. “Tough penalties apply for residents who light fires without a permit. “Having a permit also helps reduce the likelihood of unnecessary calls to emergency services. “Burns may be reported to emergency services as a bushfire and if there is no known permit for the area, crews will respond as if it is an emergency. “If a permit is in place, we can contact the permit holder to ensure everything is okay to avoid turning-out to a false alarm.” Mr Chittenden said there were pockets
in the Southern Downs Regional Council area where local burning restrictions were already in place. “If you are in the Southern Downs area, it’s best to talk with your local fire warden to determine if this applies to you and what other measures you can take to prepare your property for bushfire season,” he said. “Burning is not the only option to reduce property hazards. “Landholders should consider other measures such as slashing, fire trail construction and general clearing of fuel loads around structures and fence lines.” For more information on bushfire preparedness, how to obtain a Permit to Light Fire and to find your local fire warden, visit www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au ●
CENTRE SCOOPS AWARDS POOL FOR AQUATICS, HEATING The pool at the Warwick Indoor Recreation and Aquatic Centre (WIRAC) is getting a lot of attention lately, with WIRAC’s aquatic program and pool heating system recognised for awards. WIRAC recently received the Australian Swim Schools Association’s Awards of Excellence: Inclusive Swimming Award for its swimming program for the community’s people with disabilities. Evo Industries Australia, who recently installed the new heat pump system at WIRAC’s pool, was highly commended
in the Sustainable Project category at the Australia Swimming Pools and Spa Association (SPASA) Queensland’s Awards of Excellence. Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie said the awards were testament to the forward-thinking WIRAC staff that prided themselves on offering excellent services to the entire community. “WIRAC’s comprehensive swimming programs for children and adults with a disability provides them with a fun way to socialise and get some exercise as well as
WIRAC offers swimming lessons, water familiarisation classes and group fitness classes for people with a disability, and also offers aquatic and dry land safety activities during Disability Action Week. The SPASA Queensland Awards of Excellence recognised Evo Industries for how efficiently their heat pump system at WIRAC heated the water, handled and ventilated the air in the pool area and how well the pool recovered heat. ●

improving their comfort level around water to help keep them safe,” Cr Dobie said. “As a progressive council that places an emphasis on sustainability, it was important that SDRC choose a company that aligned with these ideals when tendering for the project to install the heat pump system at WIRAC’s pool. “The heat pump system Evo Industries installed for the pool has already paid dividends for WIRAC by lowering WIRAC’s energy use and the costs required to operate the pool.”

U3A provides short courses for older people who enjoy learning but prefer the freedom to study where and when they choose. Inquiries to Neil Bonnell on 4661 8221 or visit www.u3aonline.org.au ●

Warwick U3A held its annual morning tea recently. This is one of a few occasions when members of all different groups have an opportunity to mingle and meet other club members. This year in support of the annual trivia quiz members were asked to take a trip down ‘Memory Lane’ and to bring an item that would evoke memories. The items varied from a very cumbersome old-style hearing aid, a mini computer not much larger than a cigarette packet, a family wedding photo and a hand-woven wicker basket from Papua New Guinea which once held the club president when he was a baby.

One of Queensland’s premier winter school holiday events is about to take place in the high altitude town of Stanthorpe which delightfully celebrates being the coldest place in Queensland. The Snowflakes in Stanthorpe Winter Festival will return between 5-7 July. Pack your winter woollies, the snow is on its way. Don’t miss your chance to frolic in freezing conditions, surrounded by rosy red cheeks and happy families. The three day event starts on Friday 5 July when the main street of Stanthorpe will be packed with great entertainers, demonstrations, kids workshops, seasonal markets and local produce. Join in the fun on Saturday 6 July at the Stanthorpe Snowgrounds when the snow comes to town. The gates open at 9am and your ticket price includes a huge range of free activities, including the massive snowfield (with separate under 8’s area), on-stage entertainment, fashion parade, igloo making, movies, giant snow globes, face painting, climbing wall, enchanted forest, jumping castles, petting zoo and ‘snow’ much more. Wander through the winter markets, indulge at the international food fest and relax in the local wine and beer marquee. The ice-skating rink will
be available until 7pm at an extra cost of $20 per person. On Sunday 7 July, head back to the Snowgrounds for more time on the ice-skating rink and plenty more snow. All of the activities are on again from 9am to 2pm. The Red Rooster Fun Run will keep the kids from five to 12-years-old warm before heading back on the freshly
made snow. All of the details including online ticket sales can be found at www.snowflakesinstanthorpe.com. au. Follow the event on Facebook and Instagram at Facebook. com/snowflakesinstanthorpe or Instagram.com/ snowflakesinstanthorpe. ●

POWER TYNAN CELEBRATES 50TH BIRTHDAY IN STYLE Local firm Power Tynan have hit the big 5-0, with 1st April officially marking 50 years in business within the Stanthorpe and Toowoomba communities. “It’s been an incredible journey, and I feel privileged to have been a part of it” said CEO Amanda Kenafake. “Over the years, we have had to change a lot to keep up in today’s fast-paced environment, but was has remained the same is our focus on our clients, and the relationships and friendships we have formed with them.” Like so many businesses today, Power Tynan began as an individual with a vision. Peter Power opened a small office in the granite belt town of Stanthorpe in the late 1960s. He was soon joined by Peter Tynan and, with skill and perspiration, they grew and expanded their practice. The Toowoomba office opened with a single staff member in 1992, and now, across all offices, more than 50 people come to work at Power Tynan every day. One such team member, Edna Hurtz, has been with the company for 47 years. “Even after 47 years, I still enjoy coming to work every day,” Edna said. “Over my time here, there have been a lot of changes, a lot of great people to work with, and many clients who were here when

The end of the financial year is just around the corner, but it doesn’t have to be a race against the clock for your business. Whether you prepare your own return or use a registered tax agent, get ready now with these tips so that lodging your tax return goes smoothly. · Check whether any expenses you may be thinking about qualify for small business tax concessions, such as the instant asset write-off or immediate deduction for prepaid expenses. · Start gathering and sorting your business records now. You need records of all cash, online, EFTPOS, bank statements, and credit or debit card transactions covering: - sales and other business income - expenses you can claim as a business deduction. · Make digital copies of any paper records and make sure you back them up. If you’re a sole trader you can use the myDeductions tool on the ATO app. Even if your business hasn’t made any income this year you still need to prepare and lodge a tax return if you have an ABN. Remember, registered tax agents can help you with your tax. ●
Whatever your issues or challenges may be, the Power Tynan team can help you overcome them. We ofer a wide range of services, both in house and via our business networks, including:

THE THRILL OF ASH’S SMASH! What an absolute thrill for all sports lovers especially tennis tragics as Ash Barty etched her name in the history books claiming the World’s Number One Tennis ranking. It seems to have been a meteoric rise to the top of th e rankings from the humblest of players. It is only months since she broke into the top 10 rankings during the Australian Open. Barty is only the second Australian to reach the much sort after no 1 status - the other of course her idol and mentor the great Evonne Goolagong -Cawley. While she is without doubt the most humble person male or female to hold that ranking in modern game her demeanour belies an inherent toughness and now self belief that went missing during the darkest of days when she doubted not only her own ability but her desire to continue in the game. That she has made no secret of her struggles, I am sure makes her all the more relevant and likeable in the eye of not just the Asutralian public but the tennis world in general. One great who has been in her corner and shown great belief in Barty’s ability to rise to the top is Australia’s preeminent former player and living Legend Rocket “Rod “Laver. Laver tipped Barty to win the French Open and was courtside to see her reach what he considered her positional. Barty was also his tip to win this year’s Wimbledon. High praise indeed from Australia’s
most successful men’s player. Saying she has “the necessary tools to contend for tennis’ most prestigious trophy“. Laver remains the only man to complete the calenderer year grand slam twice so should know a bit about what it takes to win and have an eye for a champion- an. The Rockhampton Rocket has not been forgotten in his home town. I’m sure Ipswich will not be forgetting the efforts of Ash Barty any time soon. Long may the Barty Party continue - Casey TRYING TO RECOVER Like all Queenslanders I am trying to recover from the mauling our Origin players received in Perth at the hands of the Blue’s. I may need therapy. I’ve stride feeding dolphin at Tin Can Bay to help get me out of the funk nut like the Queensland players I think it will take a good deal more than the magic of a handful of those wonderful creatures. Anyway what is past is past and as Queenslanders we can only say we were comprehensively out played and move on. Hoping like hell for a better performance in a few weeks. In the meantime it’s back to the circus that is the weekly NRL merry=go round.

Australia's Living Legend of tennis has been in Ash Barty's corner for a long time. His belief in her was certainly well founded when she reached the World Number One Ranking last weekend. Pictured is a bust erected in Laver's honour and situated in his home town of Rockhampton, which I got to visit last weekend. 194958 Here are my tips for Round 15 (for what they are worth) MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN - WE HOPE By I’m Invincible out of WINX - Sounds like a match made in heaven - but only after a lot of research. stallion as her first mating. The mare still has a massive public following and the decision was announced via a statement from trainer Chris Waller. The owners saying they had fielded interest from home and abroad but decided Winx will remain in Australia. After assessing the information provided by experts the group complied a short list of stallions for consideration. The group said in the statement, “This process highlighted the extreme depth to the stallion ranks in Australia and across the world, however when considering the options of travelling overseas her welfare remained of the highest priority and we decided she would remain in Australia for her first breeding season. I Am Invincible is second on the general sires list to Snitzel and a daughter, Invincibella, won the final Group One race of the Australian season on Saturday, the Tatt’s Tiara at Eagle Farm. NO CHILL ON SCORECARD There might have been a distinct chill in the air on Saturday morning but it must have spurred Max Hunter on to a winning score in last Saturday’s stroke event at the Stanthorpe Golf club. A start to the day of minus four point something ridiculous must have been all it needed to get Max on track. His winning score of nett 64 showed no sign of a chill and came after 85 off the stick.

Hunter set up the win with a back nine of 40 shots, all pars with the exception of a couple of hiccups on two holes which ended in bogies. Mark McCosker also played well to fill the runner’s up spot. His score of nett 66 would have been a winning score in the past couple of weeks. In the Ladies event Lyn Ludlow made a welcome return to the winners circle. Ludlow finished with nett 71 well clear of the rest of the field after shooting two even nines of45 and 46. Nett 71 put Ludlow five points clear of runner up to Madeline Jarman (nett 76). . She also held the approach shot at 17 and the runner up the Approach at 12. Saturday’s event was sponsored by 4 Water Supplies another of the local businesses who continue to support Stanthorpe Golf. Mark McCosker added to prize tally last week by collecting the balls for the pin shot at three and the pro-pin at 1/10. Alan Kerr collected the pin at 12 and Rick Chapman held the pin at 17. Stephen Kay collected the pro-pin at 5/14 and Kev Rowling at 9/18. The birdies nest at 15 was shared between Casey Leotta and Richard Reardon. In the run down, it was a ball to scores of nett 72 and better for the men and nett 81 and better for the ladies. I understand that an illustrious group of players, who shall remain nameless, did not fare so well in the cold conditions. They managed to reach the ton mark on Saturday and between them, had over 700 hits on the day. Unfortunately there were no prizes for this category. A clue to their identity could perhaps be found in those who indulge in some practice rounds during the week. Popular club member Tom Fittock found himself hospitalised after trying a short cut off a ladder. Unfortunately for Tom that didn’t work well and it left him with a broken thumb, a few cracked ribs and sore joints. His injuries will keep him off the course while he recovers - best wishes for a speedy recovery and until then stay away from those climbing things. As June draws to a close we are almost half way through another year. On Saturday the Stanthorpe Club holds the end of month medley 4BBB Stableford. The event is sponsored by the Ladies, Kay Webb, Linda Kelly and Margie Locke. Tee off is from the later time of 11.45am (hopefully Jack Frost has left by then). Players are asked to register by 11.25am to allow the get the field out for a shot gun start.

Winners of the runners up prizes also had a good win in the opening round. They had an 18-12 win over their opponents Bloomfield, Max Balfour and Doug Christensen. Johno Johnson then had a 20-5 win over Tony to wrap up their final position. Other results in the opening round included a 19-9 win to Tina, Carl and Tony in their game against Brownie, Joe and Rob. Second round, The remaining scores in the Skips only round were Grumpy 18 defeated Bill Lee 8; Doug Christensen 12 def Greg Cross 10; Ralph Tate 13 def Pete Collis 10; Mick O’Leary 20 def Jean Calam 9.Kev Mooney 17 def Julie Buse 8. Tanny Triples over for another month. TANNY HONOURS MATRIACH On Sunday the Tannymorel Bowls club hosted a very special social day in honour of the Club’s new Matriarch Myrtle Wager and what an enjoyable day it was. There was a big turnout of family and friends to celebrate Myrtle’s 90th. There was bowls of course followed by lunch and plenty of shared stories and reminiscing. The all important bowls were won by Damo Boal, Dot Rankin and Sue Butz. This group had a 29-15 win in their game against Maddy Weier, Ash Coleman & Jean Calam Runners up were Rainee Lee Hume, Roz T and Dave Butz scored a 26-16 win in their
game against Kev Bishop, Laurie Wagner and Jim Lamb. Dot Rankin scored the cash for the Spider. More important than the bowls score was that Myrtle enjoyed the very special day with plenty of her bowls mates and her family. Congratulations Myrtle. WINNING STEP FOR ARMSTONG AT SPORTERS Frost what frost and minus temperatures not an issue. - Sporters golfers certainly are a tough lot. While most Stanthorpians were rugged up and looking to warm themselves up early Sunday morning, the Sporters crew were out and about on the golf course. Paul Armstrong put aside all thoughts of the conditions to score a first up win. He also returned the Best Gross score and claimed the Pin Shot at the third and the Pro Pin. In fact Sporters was almost “all about Paul“. Nick Casey got a mention as runner up while Aaron Simmers and Dick Hilton also got a mention in the run downs. John Rawlings and Paul Byrnes were also able to sneak off with a meat tray each. This Sunday Sporters will tee off at their winter time slot of 8.00-8.30am. Remember if you wish to brave the cold and join the crew you will always be made welcome. WATTLES - BRIDESMAIDS NOTMORE Wattles and Valleys showcased all that is great in rugby league last Sunday in another epic encounter in the final of the Madsen Rasmussen Trophy. Although Wattles were looking for redemption after their major losses to Valleys last season this game was about seizing the moment and making the most of the opportunities that presented. The match was a worthy show piece of rugby league on a weekend when the Toowoomba Rugby league celebrated their centenary. The Warriors were quickly out of the blocks and put first points on the scoreboard after Matthew Christensen scored. The roosters were quick to hit back with an impressive individual effort from their winger Denzel Burns who galloped 50 metres to plant the ball. It was almost a case of anything you can do I can do better or as well as Wattles’ Braydon Wilson set up an Andrew Richardson try with a wonderful pass. The Warriors threatened to dominate when Nick Van Der Poel scored and Matt Duggan converted to extend the lead to 16-4. However everyone knew the roosters were not going down without a fight and shortly before half time Dwayne Duncan narrowed the margin to 16-10 setting up

what was a brilliant second half of rugby league The attack of .one side the equal of the defence of the other as each side tried to gain the ascendency. It was Valley’s who eventually blinked first. Braydon Wilson took full advantage of an opportunity and put his side ahead 20-10 in the 48th minute. The tension on and off the field was palpable. An intercept try to Valleys Dwayne Duncan narrowed the margin to four points. Despite doing a ton of work Valleys had trailed throughout the game until Kalemb Hart crossed for a spectacular individual try and Ben Cook added the extras to give the Roosters the lead (22-20). Warriors were determined not to let another big game get away from them. Matt Duggan put up a big kick that bounced back into the arms of Mitch Koina who scored under the posts. With the successful conversion Wattles took back the lead. With 18 minutes remaining there was always going to be more twists in the tale of this game Denzel Burns showed speed to burn and levelled the scores when he scored his second for the game. That try set up a real grandstand finish as both sides threw everything into the mix. The boot of Matt Duggan broke the deadlock with a penalty conversion. Valleys received a penalty with just a few minutes left on the clock and to the surprise of many spectators chose to run the ball not take two points on offer. The ensuing play broke down and Wattles were good enough hold out their opponents. At the end of an enthralling 80 minutes it was Wattles victorious 28-26 and both teams received a standing ovation from the big crowd who witnessed a memorable game. . Wattles Mitch Koina was named the winner of the Bill and Stephen Pollard Medal as player of the match. In the end any number of the 34 players involved could have easily won the award. It was however fitting that Koina who was coached in his younger days by Bill Pollard received the accolade. After plenty of disappointments Wattles and Coach Travis Burns finally have a trophy for the club cabinet. Wattles 28 (Matthew Christensen, Mitch Koina, Andrew Richardson, Nick Van Der Poel, Braydon Wilson tries Matt Duggan 4 goals) defeated Valleys 26 (Denzel Burns 2, Dwayne Duncan 2 Kalemb Hart tries Ben Cook 3 goals).
