Intruders allegedly reversed a car into the Woolworths store in Clyde North.

Broken glass doors were removed.

Smash and grab At least two bandits are on the run after using a car to ram raid a supermarket in Clyde North on Tuesday morning, 2 July. Police are searching for the pair who reversed a car, believed to be a four-wheel-drive, into the roller doors at Woolworths Selandra Rise on Linsell Boulevard about 2.30am. Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Dwyer of the Eastern Region Crime Squad said detectives were in the process of obtaining CCTV footage and were yet to determine what was stolen. “It’s either potentially bugger all or potentially a whole lot,” he said. Sen Sgt Dwyer said the intruders allegedly

tried to access cash and were in the store between three to four minutes. “There was a security guard on site as they left. They attended because of the alarm but by the time they got there the four-wheel-drive had driven out and left.” Sen Sgt Dwyer said no arrests had been made and were investigating. Woolworths confirmed no staff members were in the store at the time. “We are currently supporting police with their investigations into the incident,” a Woolworths spokesperson said. “Woolworths Selandra Rise is currently open for business and we’re looking forward to

welcoming our customers in store.” Sen Sgt Dwyer said the damage was “extensive” with the store closed for part of the day while police investigated the crime scene. “They’ve used a number of tools to gain access,” he said. “There’s at least two offenders involved. “You’re looking at tens of thousands (of dollars) once you put in two sets of sliding doors, and roller door and everything else.” It’s believed the car involved was stolen, Sen Sgt Dwyer said, adding he was unable to confirm the make or model. “It’s one of those ones where generally they don’t use their own cars.

“If they’re prepared to break into the shopping centre then they’re more than prepared to do that,” he said. He added the incident was not something that had “occurred in the area of late.” No tools had been left behind in the store, he said. “Nothing at this stage ... We’re hoping at some stage they’ll turn up in the car and they’ll have something in there.” A staff member at a nearby shop, who did not wish to be named, said: “This centre has been hit quite a few times.” “Some of the stores have been hit twice ... It’s a bit nerve wracking when you know it happens where I work.”

Walk and Talk with Council’s Mayor

From 8 -10 July, The Australian Ballet Education Team are hosting fun and creative dance workshops for primary school kids in grades three to six.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon will complete the Mayor’s Walk for Disability in September this year. This event aims to raise much needed funds for supported accomodation for adults with a disability in the care of their ageing parents or carers, and awareness for people in Casey who live with a disability, as well as their carers.

The workshops will take place at Selandra Commuity Hub, Lynbrook Community Centre and Doveton Neighbourhood House.

The walk, which will run from Saturday 14 September until Saturday 21 September, will see the Mayor trek 10 kilometres a day between various organisations and spaces in Casey.

Participants will also be treated to a performance by The Australian Ballet on the day. Visit the City of Casey website to select a workshop that suits you.

Pave the way for activity in Casey

You can still have your say on Casey’s Aquatic Strategy, which is open until Tuesday 9 July! This strategy will guide the use and development of local aquatic facilities for the next 20 years, and we want your thoughts. Council has endorsed the Draft Casey Aquatic Facilities Strategy 2019-41, with some of the key recommendations including: » The development of a master plan for the Doveton Pool in the Park site » Council’s regional aquatic facilities, Casey ARC and Casey RACE, are recommended to be upgraded and expanded » An additional regional aquatic facility for the Clyde Growth Area. So, wade no more, dive in and have your say by visiting the Casey Conversations website.

To prepare, the Mayor will participate in training sessions each Tuesday morning in the lead up to the main event.

Take your e-waste to a better place From 1 July 2019, the State Government will no longer allow e-waste to go to landfill. The City of Casey does not send e-waste to landfill and this change will not impact any of its current services, however, residents are being reminded that e-waste does not belong in your general waste or recycling bins, and it must be disposed of separately.

There are only a few days left to have your say on the Walk and Ride Strategy, which gives you the chance to provide feedback on Casey’s shared paths. Do you know of a path that needs some work, or maybe you know a place that could do with one? Drop a pin on the exact location of the path or area you’re talking about and help Council create a more liveable city. Let us know by Sunday 7 July and go in the running to win a $40 Westfield voucher. Visit the Casey Conversations website to find out more.

E-waste is any unwanted electrical and electronic product, essentially, anything powered by batteries or with an electrical cord or plug. You can get rid of your e-waste through your hard waste collections, while old mobile phones can be dropped off at either the Bunjil Place or Cranbourne Customer Service Centre.

Casey’s Aquatic Strategy is open for residents to provide feedback.

No snags in saving lives By Brendan Rees Smart technology currently being used in barbecues in parks around Casey could take on a whole new role in saving lives. Casey Council will begin talks with Victoria Police in the way it uses the ground breaking technology to roll-out personal panic alarms. Councillor Sam Aziz, who led an urgent business motion at a council meeting on 4 June, said council was “thinking outside the square” in its approach to becoming a ‘smart city.’ He said the devices would use the same built-in wireless technology used to notify council when smart barbecues had a fault. “If the technology already exits why not use

it for a completely different purpose which is to provide that safety assurance?” Cr Aziz said. He said the mechanics of how the personal safety alarm would work were yet to be explored. However, when triggered, the personal alarms would send an emergency alert to triple zero. “It’s absolutely ground-breaking,“ Cr Aziz said. “If you can imagine ... you’ve got an assailant following you and is about to attack you, how difficult it would be to get out your mobile phone and actually physically dial triple zero? It would be impossible,” he said. “At the click of a button it can access triple zero and get a police response out there.

The latest data from the Crime Statistics Agency showed assaults and related offences in Casey were down 3.85 per cent; abduction and related offences up 84 per cent; stalking, harassment and threatening behaviour up 6.07 per cent; while crimes against the person as a whole were down by 3.34 per cent. Shadow Minister for Community Safety David Southwick said: “While we must always be open to new ways to improve community safety, calls to police are only effective if there are sufficient frontline officers in the local area who are ready and able to respond.” “Daniel Andrews must ensure Victoria Police have the frontline resources they need to respond promptly to emergency calls for assistance,” he said.

Cr Aziz said the safety devices would be accessible to all residents, including the homeless. The panic alarms would also use GPS coordinates to pinpoint the exact location of a person in trouble, Cr Aziz explained. “Can imagine how more amazing that would be in terms of enhancing the security and liveability of our residents? “People can argue that it can be abused and misused but every single device would an electronic signature that is assigned to the person who has asked for it.” Cr Aziz said capabilities such as range and accessibility would be discussed with Victoria Police.

home with the backyard set up.” Leonard, who will carry the nickname ‘Bboy lion’ into the show, which stems from the time he used to have large hair similar to a lion when he was younger, says taking on the obstacle course for the first time will be a big task. “I kind of treated it as I’m just dancing. I guess not too nervous.” “Being a rookie I’m really pumped ... I just prepared myself for the worst. “I have been on camera before but not really like high production - it’s a big thing,” he said. Australian Ninja Warrior premieres on Monday 8 July at 7.30pm on Channel 9.

Break dancer Leonard Hermawan hopes his agility and explosive moves will help him get across the line in his quest to become a ninja warrior. The 33-year-old from Narren Warren South will be a contestant on Channel Nine’s reality smash hit, Australian Ninja Warrior in July. The all-new supersized course will be hosted in Spotswood alongside the Science works museum in Melbourne. Leonard, who is a sport therapist, will join 200 contestants in the hunt for the $100,000 grand prize as they must complete the gruelling and high intensity obstacle course in re-

cord time. He is no stranger to physical challenges. He started breakdancing at the age of 16 and has competed in dance battles around the world. The former student of Maranatha Christian School in Endeavour Hills also loves skateboarding, and playing basketball and soccer. Upper-body exercises have been the focus of his training in preparation for the show, he says.“I’ve been break dancing for a while now, and I know my body and I trust what I do so I thought, ‘Yep, why not just try out for the show and give it a go?’ he said. “Doing a lot of monkey swings ... it could be at a park or at the rock climbing gym or at one of the ninja training sites. A P-plate hoon has mistaken an unmarked police car for his friend’s vehicle and dropped a burnout that covered the cop car with smoke, a court has heard. The driver had been earlier spotted by police travelling at a “fast rate” on Clyde Road, Berwick, about 3.10am on 9 January. As he stopped at traffic lights to turn onto the Monash Freeway, the police car pulled up behind him. The driver’s vehicle was stationary for a short time before performing the burnout. Police intercepted him soon afterwards on the freeway on-ramp. According to police, the “apologetic” hoon told them he was “mucking around” because he thought the car behind him was his friend’s. The man’s lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 2 July that the man toiled for a long time to get his probationary licence due to a learning disability. The warehouse worker had relationship difficulties at the time - which led to his “stupid behaviour”, the court heard. “This is an out-ofcharacter incident for this young man.” The man had committed a prior careless driving offence in December. He was sentenced to a diversion program, which included attending a road-trauma awareness seminar. Magistrate Sharon McRae told the man that he was a “bit unlucky” to have targeted a police vehicle, but dropping burn-outs could have fatal consequences. “Even if it was a friend, it shouldn’t make any difference. Do you know how many mates kill other mates (on the road)? What we know is that young men on P-plates keep driving stupidly and keep killing people.” Ms McRae advised the man to drive “very conservatively”. “I need you to grow up a bit.” The man was ordered to take part in a safedriving program as part of a 12-month goodbehaviour bond. He was spared conviction.

Man on thief’s trail By Brendan Rees A man in a sling has attempted to chase down thieves who were stealing his trailer from his Narre Warren South home. Landscaper and concreter Brendan Rydquist said he had been inside his house on Thursday evening, 27 June when he heard the culprits and rushed to try and stop them. "I heard the bang and that was them taking off, driving it off from the nature strip," he said. "By the time I got out they were 400 metres up the road." Mr Rydquist, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, said he had viewed CCTV footage from his neighbour's house which showed two men jumping out of a car about 7.50pm. "You see two images of guys hopping out and going to the trailer, and then a guy comes back around the corner and reverses in with it," he said. "The second footage is them driving out of my street onto Glasscocks road and that's where it's lit up more." The getaway car appeared to be a Toyota Hilux, he said. Adding to his frustration was the fact that the trailer, worth $5000, was brand new and hadn't been insured. "It was a replacement trailer of the one we got written off in January." "I had a trailer lock on it all the time and I unhooked it before surgery, and forgot to put it back on. "I was in hospital this week so it's been sitting there for about four days. "What I reckon is they've sussed the place out a few times," he said. He said his street was not lit up "so you just see a car and headlights." The trailer was empty at the time, he said, and expressed his disbelief with the incident:

Aaron Khalid Osmani died following a shooting in Prahran.

Man charged over shooting

The 8 by 5 trailer, worth $5,000 was allegedly stolen from the front of a Narre Warren South home. "It's just happening too often." "There's street lights at the corner of Glasscocks and Narre Warren - Cranbourne Road. Surely there's camera or footage there," Mr Rydquist said. The trailer is described as black, eight by five tandem trailer, with registration Z33 655. It also has Ramco Tailers signwriting. Mr Rydquist has appealed for information on Facebook's Casey Crime Page. Narre Warren police have been handed the footage and are investigating. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A vehicle is captured on CCTV allegedly towing the stolen trailer in Narre Warren South.

Homicide Squad detectives have charged an 18-year-old man after a Narre Warren South man was gunned down in a drive-by shooting at a Prahran nightclub in April. Security guard Aaron Khalid Osmani, 37, was shot while standing outside Love Machine nightclub. He died in hospital on Sunday 14 April. His sudden death shocked friends and family who described him as a “kind, funny and easy going guy.” Detectives also executed a search warrant at a property on Linacre Drive, Bundoora about 10.20am on Monday 1 July. The Bundoora man has been charged with two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder and will face the Melbourne Magistrates Court. Police have also charged a 25-year-old man with accessory after the fact to murder/assist principal offender, prohibited person possess firearm, stalking, make threats to kill and other offences. He has been remanded to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 2 July. Another man died following the drive-by shooting, and another four people were injured. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppers.com.au.

Dandenong South recycler Ward Petherbridge says recycling and advanced waste processing are both vital parts of the landfill-crisis solution. Greater Dandenong is exploring the procurement of a waste-to-energy combustion facility, in response to the likely closure of SUEZ Hallam tip by 2028. “Currently a large amount of waste is being transported day and night, through the tunnel and over the West Gate to the mega tips in Ravenhall and Wollert,” Mr Petherbridge said. “This is not a sustainable long-term option. “The volumes will be too great and the roads are already congested enough.” The director of Smart Recycling visited combustion plants in China as part of a Greater Dandenong Council delegation several years ago. His preferred solution is a high-tech combustion plant with mechanical biological treatment to sort recyclable and organic waste. “This is a more expensive option and I suspect as with most countries, the cheapest and

However, he expected ‘unviable’ low-grade mixed plastic would be diverted into the combustion plant instead of recycling - until companies invested in washing and granulating facilities. “It is vitally important that recycling is given priority over combustion. “Measures may need to be taken by Government to ensure the less viable areas of recycling such as plastic recycling is assisted to increase available processing.” Reducing waste at the source was the best way forward, followed by re-use, then recycling and then recovery through waste-to-energy plants, Mr Petherbridge said. The worst solution was to continue with landfill. “It is simply burying the problem for future generations to have to deal with. “Also landfills produce large amounts of methane, which is 24 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. “Ironically, by combusting the waste and controlling the emissions, I think this is the choice of lesser evils.”

Renewal is front of mind By Andrew Cantwell The Hampton Park shopping precinct - or Hampton Park Central - is to be revamped and revitalised under sweeping new planning guidelines adopted by Casey Council in early June. The plan for the precinct affects commercial properties between Hallam Road and Stuart Avenue, and from Somerville Road down to Fordholm Road. The shopping precinct was until recently home to what has been described as ‘Victoria’s worst shopping centre’ - a title the suburb’s residents and Casey City Council hope to throw off in the very near future. Under the council’s vision for the precinct, the tangle of carparks and narrow access lanes will be replaced by accessible and sensible treelined streets - including a ‘Main Street’ with access from Hallam Road - plus a central roundabout and straight north-south feeder streets. The current ad hoc development - when it’s eventually rebuilt - will have modern height limits, allowing development of up to six storeys, with a limit of four storeys on current residential land peripheral to the precinct. A feature of the plan is an ‘urban creek, connecting the River Gum Creek Reserve across Hallam Road with the Fordholm Reserve south of the precinct, and west past the community hub where the kinder, community house and Arthur Wren Hall currently stand. River Gum Ward councillor Damian Rosario was delighted to speak about the “exciting” vision for the precinct, adding that it gave direction and certainty around investment, transport, shops and facilities. There was also clear vehicular and pedes-

Re-imagined Hampton Park Central - an artist's impression of the leafy streets of a revitalised shopping precinct. trian connectivity, he said. The centre’s ‘worst’ supermarket - the Hampton Park’s Food Market - was demolished in February and its replacement will kick off what is hoped to be a resurgence for the precinct. The “quite substantial” new development will feature a mix of commercial and retail office space, and over 100 residences on top, Casey’s city and asset planning manager Keri New said at the meeting. The build will show other property holders what’s possible, and perhaps encourage them to unlock the new value of their sites, too. A separate plan for the council-owned land housing a significant river redgum, the Arthur Wren Hall, library, kinder and community house will be developed in due course, becoming a focal point for the community and permitting the build of Main Street to the north. The council received 22 submissions on the plan, most offering no objection, with two keen to protect Arthur Wren Hall from any detrimental impact.

Residents won’t pay up to seal Oatland Roads deal By Brendan Rees A proposed fee to bill ratepayers half-a-million dollars to seal a road in Narre Warren North has been dumped by Casey Council due to resident objections. Casey Council has backed from the plan in which it hoped homeowners would contribute to the cost of upgrading Oatlands Road under a special charge scheme policy. The proposed works included the construction of an asphalt road pavement with concrete kerb and channel and underground drainage. The total cost of the project is estimated at $504,000 - with 16 properties directly affected on the 390 metre road. Council posted letters to residents of Oatlands Road in April detailing the costs and a survey form. According to council, the survey found five residents supported the proposal, while seven objected, and four residents did not respond. A council document stated residents said the works should instead be funded in part through council's capital works program. However, council argued the cost to maintain new asphalt was lower than the cost to maintain an unsealed road. "In the longer-term council will be required to fund resurfacing and rehabilitation of the asphalt road pavement," a council document stated. "While these works should only be required after 20 to 30 years of use, the cost can be significant." Casey Deputy Mayor and Four Oaks Ward councillor Rosalie Crestani said accepted the results of the survey, adding a review of the special charge scheme policy was expected to be held in July.

Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani says she has accepted the opinion of residents not to help pay for a road to be sealed in Narre Warren North. "If the majority don't want it to happen then I accept that on their behalf," she said. "A lot aren't aware that the rates don't automatically cover sealed roads otherwise they would've been done a long time ago. "I think there's almost unanimous support for it to actually have it done except there are a few people don't want it; they want to keep it semi-rural." Cr Crestani said by reviewing the special charge scheme policy, council would look at increasing funding to "make it less bearing on the residents."

AROUND CASEY

with AMANDA STAPLEDON

Making global friends GLOBAL WALL OF FRIENDSHIPS The Global Wall of Friendships is a stunningly designed wall at the Balla Balla Centre that houses plaques from many of our multicultural, community and faith based groups in Casey. It is an acknowledgement of the importance of these groups in our City and a way for them to feel valued and connected. Each year we hold an event where we unveil plaques from interested groups and this year we celebrated the Wall’s 10th Anniversary honouring Salah Parker (whose concept it was) along with Casey’s Access and Inclusion Commission and the Balla Balla working group that helped make this a reality. On Saturday Cr Rosario and I had the privilege of standing alongside three community groups and helped them unveil their plaques. The groups this year were The Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation, The Southern Refugee and Migrant Centre and The South Sudanese-Australian Academic Society; a special day for us and these very special groups. ELDERS’ 20TH ANNIVERSARY On Sunday I was honoured to be invited to join Sri Lankan Elders Welfare Association President Cynthia Cooray, her committee and the Sri Lankan community to celebrate a special anniversary for a very special association. It is important for our cultural groups to maintain their cultural heritage and mother tongue as well as receive the supports and services they need and this association provide that in spades; they provide opportunities for music, singing, dancing and games and are a great support when needed. The association meets at the John Pandazopolous Hall on Power Road in Doveton each Monday between 9am and 12. BERWICK ROTARY CHANGEOVER This hardworking club celebrated their 58th changeover and a fabulous year with President Geoff Double at the helm. Many significant achievements were highlighted; none more than the construction of a school in Timor Leste (East Timor); a vital piece of infrastructure for a deserving community in need. Congratulations to incoming president Isobel Caulfield who outlined her vision for the year and one that I know will bring great benefit to the Berwick and wider community. A great night was had by all and may this year be a great one! ENDEAVOUR HILLS CHANGEOVER This is another wonderful club celebrating their outgoing president Cherie Ramsay and her leadership in delivering another amazing Car Show event, Golf Day and for the ongoing support for Disaster Aid. Members welcomed the Incoming president Martin Pater. His year will be an ambitious one and who is also committed to the club’s ongoing support for Disaster Aid; an initiative that was borne from the efforts of this wonderful club. A great night with great people - wishing Martin and the Club a fabulous year!

Peter’s departure is an exciting step for him as he leaves a lasting legacy that will bring benefits to the community for generations to come. Student plea on Basin plan By Ashleigh Barraclough A group of students from Gleneagles Secondary College are fighting to protect the MurrayDarling Basin at the YMCA Victoria Youth Parliament. Year 10 and 11 students Angela Kavedzic, Jess Fitzgerald, Luke Gablek, Josh Davis, Fergus Thomson and Brayden Dopper will debate their Bill about the Murray-Darling Basin in the chambers of Parliament House in the first week of July. The management of the Murray-Darling Basin, which runs through Victoria, New South Wales, ACT, Queensland and South Australia, has attracted widespread criticism from scientists and environmentalists. Over the summer of 2018 and 2019, three mass fish kills occurred in the Murray-Darling near Menindee due to poor water quality. The team was struck by the lack of action from the State Government and the MurrayDarling Basin Authority. "It got to us that something that massive could happen without warning or blame. It really puzzled us. It drove us to think if we've identified problems, what can we do to solve them, or at least improve them?" Mr Davis said. The students are proposing a Victorian Royal Commission into the mismanagement of the Basin, and are advocating for the cre-

ation of a state government body to manage and protect the Basin. The Bill also proposes creating education programs for primary and secondary school students on Victorian ecology and the Basin. "We're going to be able to educate the younger generations who are moving up into politics to understand why this is important and why it's a problem they need to work on to solve," Ms Fitzgerald said. The Gleneagles students' determination to protect the Basin, which native species and people depend on, shows young Australians are greatly concerned about the state of the environment. "Young people are active and engaged, not just in social issues, which are extremely important, but also in environmental and ecological issues of this state," Mr Davis said. YMCA Victoria Youth Parliament is a program designed to give young Victorians a chance to be heard at the highest levels of state government. Since 1987, more than 30 Youth Parliament Bills have gone on to become Victorian legislation. YMCA Victoria Youth Parliament sits on the 1st, 2nd and 4th of July. Ashleigh Barraclough is a member of the YMCA Youth Press Gallery.

Children’s hub expands A new-look Chalcot Lodge Childrens Centre in Endeavour Hills has moved with the times, expanding into a community hub for groups of all ages. The $782,000 upgrade includes a new multi-purpose community room, a flexible consulting room, a community kitchen, outdoor play area and an upgraded kindergarten. The 40-year-old building's furnishings, fittings, equipment, facade, front landscaping

and signage also get a makeover. It will host programs such as playgroups, exercise classes and a meeting point for a wide range of social and cultural groups in Endeavour Hills. The opening was launched by Casey Four Oaks Ward councillor Rosalie Crestani and Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams. "Places like these are vital anchors, which help grow greater community connectedness

and reduce social isolation," Cr Crestani said. In the past 12 months, the number of babies born in Casey rose by 5 per cent - from 4959 to 5202. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said with 90 babies born in Casey a week, there was a clear need for better maternal-and-childhealth facilities. "This Children's Centre will be a major as-

set for young families in our area." Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon said the redevelopment was an example of the community's changing needs. "By providing a dedicated community space for a diverse range of community and user groups, residents now have a place to meet, participate, socialise and connect for years to come," Cr Stapledon said.

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region

Not so fast fashion By Danielle Kutchel As the fashion industry speeds up, one Berwick designer is slowing it all down. At the age of just 21, Christina Hewawissa has created and launched her own ethical and sustainable fashion label, Rosa Rosa The Label. Combatting the consumerism that dominates shopping malls, Rosa Rosa is all about making more sustainable fashion choices, using fabrics and practices that don’t cost the earth. After accelerating her university degree, Ms Hewawissa landed a job with another brand where she quickly gained hands-on experience in every aspect of running a fashion business - but she wasn’t happy. “The way that they worked was super unsustainable,” she explains. Feeling guilty for pressuring offshore workers to meet unrealistic deadlines, and for contributing to serious environmental harm and endangering animals due to the fabrications being used, she quit and decided to go out on her own, using a brand template she had developed during her time at Billy Blue College of Design. Six months in, the business is growing and Ms Hewawissa is confident she made the right decision. She still lives at home, working from her parents’ garage, which has allowed her to invest everything in her business without the worry of meeting mortgage payments. Owning her own label was always a dream but she didn’t expect it to happen so soon. “I definitely didn’t think I’d be this young. But the opportunity came up!” she laughs. Rosa Rosa was officially launched in March and the second collection dropped in early June. The clothes are made in Melbourne and are 100 per cent vegan. Ms Hewawissa, who designs every piece, says the label is quirky and fun and based on things she enjoys wearing rather than being a slave to trends.

While she has a seamstress make the clothes, Christina creates the sample stock. 195094 As well as being available online, Ms Hewawissa has secured a spot in Design A Space, a Fitzroy store showcasing independent Australian designers. Now, she is gearing up for an appearance at Brisbane Fashion Week in August, a city with a growing interest in sustainable fashion, where she will launch her new season collection. “I’m excited for that because with Spring, you can play with it more, it’s more fun. “I’ve put in so many hours on these and some days are easy, some days are just unbelievably hard. I haven’t really fully enjoyed my brand because I’ve been working so hard on it, but I think I’ll be happy at Fashion Week because I will be able to step back and relax and look at it all come together.” She’s also keen to connect with her Brisbane customer base and with other designers, and use the opportunity to increase her

brand’s recognition. As a one-woman-show, Ms Hewawissa wants her brand to grow organically. She has her eye on expanding her range in the future once she has established a loyal customer base - into menswear, children’s wear and perhaps a range of sustainable shampoos and body scrubs. “It’s slowly evolving and I think that if you put pressure on it it’s going to be really restricting and it’s going to hurt it,” she says. Ms Hewawissa credits her steady approach to her mother, who encouraged her to pursue her dreams and be happy. “My mum showed me that everything can be done no matter what you go through - not from a fashion point of view or business or anything, but no matter what you go through you can get it done if you want to get it done.”

Casey’s call to capitalise on tourism boom Leaders from across the region’s tourism industry joined together to network and discuss regional tourism opportunities for the local economy when City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon hosted the annual Mayor’s Business Leaders Dinner. Held at Bunjil Place on Friday 14 June, Cr Stapledon was thrilled to welcome approximately 80 guests, including community members, local business owners, fellow Casey councillors and members from the state and federal governments, to the exciting event. Board members from the recently formed Casey Cardinia Visitor Economy Inc. also attended. As the region’s new tourism board, this dedicated group has set its sights on energising the visitor economy and injecting visitors into the region. Speaking at the dinner, Cr Stapledon said the global visitor economy was set for “continued growth“, presenting exciting opportunities for the local area. She highlighted the benefits of tourism to the wider business community and said that increasing visitation to the region would bolster the broader economy. “Considering we, as the Casey Cardinia Region, are still in our infancy as a visitor destination, expenditure by all key markets is strong and continues to grow each year,” she said. “In the 2015/16 financial year, more than $462 million was generated for tourism and hospitality sales in our region; additionally, over this time, our region hosted almost 3,000 jobs across these two industries. “We are well placed to capitalise on this growth, and with a great diversity of existing and emerging tourism assets, I am very excited for what’s to come.” The event included a presentation from

Stadium win Casey Council has celebrated the completion of the second and final stage of the major redevelopment of Casey Stadium. City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon officially opened Stage 2 of the Casey Stadium redevelopment on Tuesday 25 June at a special event to celebrate the project's completion with Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards, and representatives from YMCA Victoria, Cricket Victoria, Cricket Australia, Gymnastics Victoria, Netball Victoria, Football Victoria and local sporting associations. Features of the $7.3 million Stage 2 project includes: New and upgraded multipurpose courts for basketball, netball, badminton and volleyball, including a mini-show court; A 1,300sqm gymnastics hall to cater for recreation, competition and all abilities Five (dual use) cricket/soccer courts and six cricket training lanes A refurbished cafe and lounge space; and upgraded bathrooms as well as male, female and accessible changerooms. This complements the $18 million, Stage 1 of the redevelopment which opened in 2017, which delivered five new basketball and netball courts, including a show court with seating for up to 1,500 spectators, a cafe, piazza and function space. Cr Stapledon said council was proud to deliver such a premier indoor sports facility for the Casey community. "The new and improved stadium paves the way for new participation opportunities for the community, from domestic competitions right through to elite sporting pathways. "Some of the elite clubs that Casey Stadium has already secured include the Casey Cavaliers Big V basketball teams, the newly-formed Casey Demons Victorian Netball League Club, Casey Stars Indoor Cricket Club and the Casey

Gymnastics Club. "Casey Stadium is already attracting some fantastic sporting events to the region, including Big V games, college basketball games, Victorian Netball League games and the Sikh Games. "In another exciting coup for our city, Casey Stadium will host the National Indoor Cricket Championships over the coming weeks, which will see up to 80 teams competing ranging from under 13's through to Open division, as well as the Lord's Taverners Shield for players with an intellectual disability. This project was funded by the City of Casey ($5.815 million), Victorian Government ($650,000), YMCA ($750,000) and Cricket Victoria ($50,000). "We'd like to thank the State Government, YMCA and Cricket Victoria for their contributions towards this project and helping to ensure we delivered the best outcome for our community," Cr Stapledon added.

The 2018 Chloe Clash gets underway.

They’re doing it for Chloe By Danielle Kutchel Two sports, one game, 50 players over 24 hours. 'Chloe Clash', as the game is called, is set to take over Casey Stadium this weekend in a marathon 24 hour non-stop game, raising funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital. And it’s all in honour of Chloe Myors, who passed away from a brain aneurysm in 2012 at the age of 11. Ian Myors, Chloe’s father, said the competition was inspired by a desire to give back to the hospital, after experiencing the assistance they provide to bereaved parents and families. “They’re supportive in a lot of different ways that other people don’t see. Having dealt with them now, it’s just the way they treated us

and Chloe at the time, words can’t describe it,” Mr Myors explained. “They have a memorial day every year and after 2017 Chloe’s brother, Ben, said ‘I want to do something’.” Ben initially considered running a charity basketball match to raise funds for the hospital, but the idea grew to a 24 hour combined basketball and netball game - netball being the game Chloe played and loved, and basketball being Ben’s sport of choice. While it might sound confusing, Mr Myors said when Chloe Clash was trialled in 2017, the players understood the combined codes within minutes. The 2018 match raised just under $9500, and

Mr Myors said they are aiming higher this year. An opening ceremony will be held on Friday 5 July at 4pm, with the game commencing at 4.30pm. The Chloe Clash Evening function will be held later that night, from 7.30pm til 9.30pm featuring guest speakers from the Royal Children’s Hospital and DonateLife (Chloe was an organ donor). A sausage sizzle will be held on Saturday, and a silent auction with prizes like a football and jumped signed by Richmond Football Club stars will run across the weekend. All money raised goes straight to the Royal Children’s Hospital. For more information about Chloe Clash, visit their Facebook page.

Triumph after Tai Tin-ic battles at the national level By Cam Lucadou-Wells Just three years after taking up the sport, a feisty Lyndhurst family has collected a fist-full of national judo medals. Will and Priscilla Tai Tin, and children Ethan and Lily, grabbed five medals at the finals at Gold Coast on 8-10 June. Ethan (under-15s) and Priscilla were crowned national champtions, Lily struck bronze in the under-12s and Will won two silver medals. Will has also been selected to represent Samoa in the Pacific Games on 7-20 July. He withdrew from one of the Gold Coast finals on medical advice to rest an injury ahead of the Games. "The last couple of weeks have been all about doing the right thing in training, and getting the body in peak condition." He paid tribute to the coaches at their home club, the Taketani Judo Academy in Huntingdale. At the recent Gold Coast titles, the club yielded six Australian champions, five silver medals and seven bronze. "The academy continues to perform," Will said. "Our junior teams are the ones to look out for." It's only been three years since Will and Priscilla followed their kids into the sport. Will, who comes from a rugby background, trained instead of working long overtime. Under the diet and training regimen, he shed a dramatic 50 kilos. Since then, fighting-good health and better work-life balance have followed. The family now spends long hours together - on the training mat and preparing for their events. Eagles soar By Hayley Wildes MORNINGTON PENINSULA ROUND 12 After 12 rounds, Pearcedale still has just one win on the board after falling to Seaford on Saturday at home in convincing fashion. The Tigers jumped out of the blocks as they kicked with the wind in the opening term, but the Panthers stayed within touch as they put some scoreboard pressure on in the second term. At half-time, the Panthers trailed by 16 points, 7.5 (47) to 5.1 (31). Despite being within a few kicks after that encouraging first half, the Panthers were absolutely overawed in the second half as the Tigers slammed on 10 goals to one to run away with a 79-point win, 17.16 (118) to 6.3 (39). The disastrous second half showcased the problems that have plagued the Panthers all season as they struggled to put up any resistance when the Tigers grabbed the momentum in the third quarter. Jack McGuiness and Laughlin Cowell (three goals) were impressive in defeat for Pearcedale. Devon Meadows' disappointing season continued, falling by seven points to Rye, 7.12 (54) to 6.11 (47). In a back-and-forth contest, the Panthers were just six points behind heading into the final term, but a wasteful fourth quarter cost them dearly as they could only manage 2.7 (19). Rye held on for a 7.12 (54) to 6.11 (47) win. Mat Fletcher and Joel Hillis were best for Devon Meadows. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 11 Keysborough was made to work for its win over Heatherton at home, but the brilliance of Chris Bryan (six goals) was too much as the Burras ran out 18-point winners, 8.10 (58) to 6.4 (40). While Bryan dominated up forward, Geoffrey Humphreys and Simon Marchese were key across the ground. The Doveton Eagles used a spirited second half to take control of the game against Caulfield on their way to victory. The Eagles kicked poorly in front of goal early, but as Brayden Follett (four goals) found his range, they got back into the contest and led by seven points at half time. Holding Caulfield to just two goals after half time, the Eagles posted a 9.15 (69) to 6.5 (41) win as Michael Callinan and Nick Battle ran riot. DIVISION 3 - ROUND 11 In a stunning result, Hampton Park suffered its first loss of the season - falling to Clayton at home. In a low-scoring slog, the Redbacks trailed by one-point, 1.3 (9) to 1.2 (8), at half-time but turned that into an eight-point three quarter

time lead. The Clays kicked with the wind in the final term and they stormed home with four goals to claim a stirring victory, 7.4 (46) to 5.5 (35). Shannon Henwood and Sean Winsall were best for Hampton Park, which now owns a 10-1 record. Endeavour Hills showed absolutely no mercy against Cerberus. The Falcons were ruthless from the start of the second quarter as they piled on 15 goals to zero after quarter time. Jarrod Marolla (five goals) and Shaun Richards (three goals) were electric up forward, while Daniel Strom and Nicholas De Poilly (two goals) were dominant across the ground. DIVISION 4 ROUND 11 Hallam was unable to get going offensively against South Yarra as the Hawks lost 8.5 (53) to 4.5 (29). Jack Sharlassian shone for Hallam, while Rory McIvor (two goals) did plenty across the ground. Lyndhurst claimed a 50-point win over Frankston, 11.9 (75) to 3.7 (25), as they dominated from the opening quarter with Cory Willshire (five goals) firing up forward and Charlie Gardiner getting busy. VFLW ROUND 8 The Casey Demons suffered their fourth loss in a row. After winning their first three games of the season, the Demons have struggled since and against Richmond in Bendigo, that was again the case. The Demons were in the game for the first three quarters due to the Tigers' inaccurate kicking, but Richmond found its range in the fourth to kick five goals to zero and run away with a 9.11 (65) to 4.2 (26) win. Chantel Emonson and Casey Sherriff were best for the Demons. WEST GIPPSLAND ROUND 12 Tooradin-Dalmore jumped out of the blocks early against Nar Nar Goon and, despite a third quarter comeback attempt by the Goon, claimed the win. Boasting a 21-point quarter-time lead, Tooradin-Dalmore built on that advantage in the second term, despite a minor hiccup in the opening minutes of the quarter, and headed into the main break with a 30-point lead, 9.8 (62) to 5.2 (32). With Waide Symes (two goals) and Nick Lang (three goals) starring in dynamic roles, the Seagulls looked in control. To the Goon's credit, they fought back - with Trent Armour and Trent Noy leading the way - to narrow the deficit to 17 point at the final change. But the Seagulls ran away with the game in the fourth as they kicked back into gear to record a 15.12 (102) to 10.8 (68) win.

Coaching program growing By Afl South East Media The AFL South East (AFLSE) Coach Support and Mentor Program continues to grow in momentum with inspirational Phillip Island coach Beau Vernon attracting more than 160 coaches to Casey Fields on Monday last week. Vernon was the guest speaker at the third session of the program for 2019, offering advice to coaches from juniors, seniors and women’s leagues from right across the AFL South East region. Vernon was a star player for Leongatha, a two-time best and fairest winner, before a freak football accident in 2012 saw him become a quadriplegic at the age of 23. He spent seven months in rehabilitation before finding solace in the grand art of coaching. He has since secured senior premierships at both Leongatha and Phillip Island to become one of the most respected figures in the game. AFLSE Coach Support and Mentor Program Coordinator Brent Clinnick said Vernon’s participation was a real highlight of the program, now in its third year. The program aims to brings coaches together to share their knowledge and experiences with one another in a cohesive and enjoyable environment. “I’m not surprised by how many coaches turned up because Beau is such a well-respected figure in the game,” Clinnick said. “He has such a unique story to tell and I’m sure everyone in attendance will take something positive away from the experience. "It’s been a real highlight to have Beau on board and to add his touch to what we have built in the first three years of the program.” Clinnick said the program - which had mostly concentrated on senior coaching in its first two years - was creating a great support mechanism and learning experience for coaches from right across the region. He was also excited by the introduction of a

junior component to the program, which will work with over 50 junior clubs to implement overarching coaching strategies and aim to achieve consistency of coaching throughout the various age groups. Clinnick has been working closely with AFL Victoria Football Development Managers (FDMs), Cam Roberts, Dean Rice and Stuart Clark, and advisor Paddy Swayn, to ensure the program hits the ground running. “It’s very exciting to be entering the junior space, and to provide assistance and guidance to coaches at that very important development stage, “ Clinnick said. “It’s not an easy job coaching, and sometimes coaching the juniors can be just as challenging as taking on a role in the senior ranks.” AFL South East has allocated Coach Support Officers (CSOs) to every junior club, to act as mentors and provide direction, support and advice in regard to coaching programs. The mentor project specifically targets the Under 11-14 age groups and includes a focus on club strategy, training and matchday. The program will be coordinated by Clinnick who will work closely with newly appointed CSOs Shaun Beattie, Dean Langford, Jarrod Flanigan and Darren Roe. The CSOs will also form part of the new Monitoring Coaching Behaviour Program (MCBP) that will monitor and watch FDJFL and SEJ coaches on match-days. They will be looking for, and reinforcing, positive coaching behaviours and how the actions of coaches impact on teams, club and community. They will also assess and nominate coaches for Coach of the Month Awards.

Winning streak continues By Hayley Wildes Round 14 of Big V basketball action was a roller-coaster for the Casey Cavaliers. While some teams recorded impressive wins, some losses were also endured. The Championship men dropped a game on the road to Werribee, 114-97. In a highscoring affair, the Cavs shot the ball well, but they couldn't slow down the Devils who carved through Casey's defence. Matt Donlan (32 points) caught fire in an impressive offensive display, while Brandon Polk (18 points and 7 rebounds) and Raheem Lemons (15 points and 7 rebounds) were their usual busy selves. The loss, Casey's third in a row and fourth in the last five games, sees them fall to fourth on the ladder with a 12-6 record. The Championship women have endured a horror season and that continued on Saturday in Sunbury. Taking on the third-placed Jets, the Cavs were completely outplayed and suffered an 83-45 loss. Toccara Ross (16 points and 10 rebounds) and Sarah Halejian (11 rebounds, 5 points, 4 steals and 3 assists) battled hard and played all 40 minutes, but it wasn't enough as they lost their ninth game in a row. With a 4-10 record, the Cavs sit eighth. The Youth League 1 men had two matchups over the weekend and split their games. On Saturday night at home, they made light work of Geelong, 89-68. Corey Roos (21 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists) and Brendon Head (13 points and 13 rebounds) led the way in an entertaining game. Backing up a day later on the road, Casey fell to Hume City. The Cavs were bullied in the paint as the Broncos outscored them 62-44 in the key as they recorded a 94-80 win. Blake Taylor (19 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists) and Corey Roos (14 points and 6 re-

Boasting a 12-7 record, the Cavs sit fourth. The Youth League 1 women took care of business with ease over one their main rivals, Warrandyte. In a big clash in the scheme of the season, Casey's brilliance and team play shone through in a convincing 106-70 win.

Incredibly, the Cavs dished 36 assists on 43 made baskets - a product of their willingness to share the ball and create scoring opportunities for one another. Lauren Tuplin (26 points, 9 assists and 6 rebounds) did it all in another dominant outing, while Bec Peacock (21 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists) and Kim Shankland (16 points and 8 rebounds) were involved in everything. Riding an 11-game winning streak, the Cavs

On Saturday, a Youth League 1 and Championship women double-header tips off from 6pm at Casey Stadium, while the Championship and Youth League 1 men take on Corio Bay and Bendigo, respectively. On Sunday, a Youth League 1 and Championship men double-header will get underway from 1:30pm at Casey Stadium.

Berwick’s fantastic four achieve serious statewide glory By Hayley Wildes

Berwick College’s junior boys and girls were crowned 2019 Victorian College Champions recently. seconds on the clock, Tamsyn Carr drained a clutch two-point bucket through contact and the foul was rightfully called. She headed to the free throw and calmly completed the three-point play to give Berwick College a nail-biting win. The academy continues to go from strength to strength and in its sixth year, the balance between academics and basketball is helping students excel in both aspects. "The academic side is always first at Berwick," Pentland said.

"We don't take them out of any of their main classes, so they really have to focus on getting that part right and then the basketball is the cherry on top of that." Superstar young gun Jaz Shelley blazed a trail in terms of earning a scholarship to play college basketball in the USA, and it looks like others are soon set to follow. "For a lot of the kids their goal is to go off and play college basketball," Pentland added. "Jaz Shelley was in our program and she is off to the University of Oregon and a couple of others got college offers, but didn't want to go

"It helps having both facets for the kids because if they do want to pursue a college career, they've obviously got to get the academic results too." With another four state titles to Berwick College's name, the junior teams will head to the national championships in December with hopes of bringing home more silverware. 12416776-LB18-19

Berwick College Basketball Academy is creating opportunities and pathways for those looking to take their basketball game to the next level. With so much talent coming through the school's ranks, it's clear that the students are taking those opportunities with both hands. Recently, in what was an incredible achievement for the academy, a school-record four teams were crowned state champions at the 2019 Victorian College Championships (VCC). Held at the State Basketball Centre, just getting to the state finals is an achievement in itself and Berwick College's Division 1 and 2 intermediate (Years 9 and 10) boys, along with the Division 1 junior (Years 7 and 8) boys and girls took home gold medals. What made the junior boys' grand final even more impressive for the school was the fact that two Berwick College teams faced off against one another - further highlighting the depth of talent. "It was fantastic; having the two boys teams play off against each other in the grand final was pretty exciting," Berwick College Basketball Academy director Chris Pentland said. "They all treat each other really well, but it was good that they both ended up playing in that game and it was played in good spirit." For the junior girls, their road to glory wasn't easy. A semi-final clash against Templestowe went right down to the wire. After trailing by as many as 13 points early in the contest, Berwick College stormed back into the contest.
