Formula for chaos At least three shoplifters have gone on a brazen rampage, stealing thousands of dollars of baby formula from supermarkets in the South East, a court has heard. Kiara Alexander-McNeil, 19, pleaded guilty to 19 cases of theft in which more than $9000 of baby formula and other shopping items were stolen in May, June and July. They hit Coles, IGA and Woolworths supermarkets in Chadstone, Waverley Gardens, Patterson Lakes, Clayton, Pinewood, Mt Eliza, Mentone, Clarinda, Surrey Hills, Dandenong, Cranbourne and Cranbourne East. Each heist typically netted several hundred dollars of goods, loaded from the in-store shelves into a grocery trolley or in several shopping bags. On one occasion, the thieves took a trolley-load worth $850, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard on 16 July. They looted some supermarkets multiple times, sometimes twice on the same day, the court was told. Defence lawyer Lachlan Hocking said Alexander-McNeil took responsibility for taking part in the thefts but couldn't remember specific times and dates. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen replied: "I presume that's because of 19 charges." In recent years, there has been high demand for baby formula, prompting two-tin purchase limits at Coles and Woolworths. The limit aimed to reduce the massbuying of the $30-plus products, which were being on-sold to China. During the thefts, Alexander-McNeil who had no prior convictions - had been arrested three times. The first time on 7 May she was released on bail. She had been promised $50 from her associates for taking part in the $782 heist at Chadstone, she told police at the time. On 1 July, she was arrested a short
time after selling 16 stolen baby formula tins for $120 cash to a Springvale business. The tins would normally retail for $482. She was released again on bail and after four further thefts, was arrested for a third time with two co-accused in a car in Mayfield Park. According to police, she was trying support a $200-a-day habit of smoking fentanyl patches. Alexander-McNeil had gone into a "downward spiral" due to her co-accused 23-year-old boyfriend, Mr Hocking told the court. The offending started after she lost her cafe job, moved out of the family home and shared a room in Endeavour Hills with the boyfriend. Magistrate Vandersteen said he hoped police had been able to disrupt the "organised and voluminous" offending and its avenues for on-selling. "The offending here is overwhelming. You're way out of your depth. "The whole focus has to be on helping you, but you have to help yourself as well." Alexander-McNeil was remanded for sentencing on 17 July, pending a Youth Justice assessment. A Victoria Police spokesperson later told Star News that police were aware that "international demands can make it an attractive commodity for criminal entities". "We are committed to holding offenders to account for these crimes and have made number of arrests following thefts from supermarkets and pharmacies across Melbourne. "We are also working with retailers and small business owners to improve security practices and implement crime prevention measures." Baby formula thefts made up less than one percent of all thefts from retail stores in Victoria, the spokesperson said.

IN BRIEF
Fire-door rules are a ‘shut out’ for gym By Cam Lucadou-Wells An all-abilities gymnastics club for 200 children has moved out of its 45-year home in Noble Park due to a bureaucratic impasse over a fire door. In a heartbreaking decision, Koala Gymnastics Club has shifted to a Keysborough warehouse from its base at Paddy O'Donoghue Centre - named after the club's founder and great supporter. The impasse revolved upon a fire door being propped open during classes so parents could see their children at all times - as part of Gymnastics Victoria child protection regulations. The club had used a door stop for this purpose for the past 12 years. Things changed at the start of 2019 when Greater Dandenong Council insisted the door being kept closed for fire safety reasons. The club was founded in 1974 by Noble Park Public Hall Trust chair AJ 'Paddy' O'Donoghue. His passion was to create a low-fee gym club for children.
"His dream was to have a place for children of all abilities to have a place to gather to exercise and have fun," his niece Dawn Dickson said. With not a lot of funds, the Trust gradually bought second-hand gym equipment. In the 1980s, it temporarily moved the hall burning down in the 1980s. With loyal volunteers and coaches over decades, the club has grown to 200 children members. Head coach Cathy Green started as a gymnast at the club when she was seven. She's remained as a coach and participant for the past 30 years. Her late father was a dedicated supporter of the gym. Her sister Christine, her daughter Elizabeth and son Christopher are among the 12 coaches. She said it was an emotional decision to move, but the club would still thrive in its spacious and well-equipped new base. "The (Paddy O'Donoghue Centre) has been
my home since I was a child. It means so much to me and to my Dad. "In the end I had to do what's best for the club and gymnasts. It had become too difficult to run the club properly with all the rules and regulations. "We want people to know it's a new beginning." Greater Dandenong corporate services director Mick Jaensch said the council had not previously granted permission for the gym to operate with an open fire door. "This has only recently become an issue in the past two years due to a significant growth in numbers which saw the gym operate beyond the main hall. "All Council facilities need to operate within the Building regulations to ensure public safety is maintained at all times." Koala Gynmastics Club is open five days a week at 2/174-176 Atlantic Drive Keysborough. Details: koalagymnastics.org.au or 0449 844 249.
Killed in two-vehicle crash A Springvale man has died after a two-vehicle crash involving a maxi-cab in Clayton on Saturday 20 July. The 18-year-old wheelchair passenger was one of five occupants in the Toyota maxi-cab in the crash about 8.40pm. Major Collison Investigation Unit detectives say a silver Holden Astra was turning into Wellington Road from Blackburn Road when it collided with the maxi-cab travelling south on Wellington Road. The maxi-cab driver, a 31-year-old from Noble Park, was uninjured. Three other passengers in the cab were taken to hospital with injuries, police say. The Astra driver, a 25-year-old Noble Park man, did not suffer injuries.
Five charged after home drug raid Three men and two women were arrested during a dawn drug raid by police in Gordon Street Noble Park on 20 July. Police from Southern Metro divisional response unit say they seized a commercial quantity of heroin and ‘ice’, cash, cannabis, weapons and power tools that were suspected as stolen. A 40-year-old Noble Park man was charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of methyl amphetamine and heroin. He was remanded in custody to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 22 July. A 26-year-old Noble Park woman was charged with trafficking heroin. She was remanded in custody to face Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 5 August. A 41-year-old Noble Park woman was charged with trafficking a drug of dependence. She has been bailed to appear at court at a later date. A 37-year-old Noble Park man was charged with possessing cannabis and a prohibited weapon. He was bailed to appear at court at a later date. A 42-year-old Collingwood man was charged with possessing heroin and cannabis. He will face Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 29 July 2019.
Robbers strike at bank front A man has been punched and robbed of his phone in a central Springvale shopping strip during the early evening of Sunday 14 July. About 6pm the 19-year-old was approached by two unknown males outside the Commonwealth Bank branch on Springvale Road. One of the males requested to use the victim’s phone, Greater Dandenong CIU police say. As the victim pulled out his phone, the male snatched it from his hand. The victim tried to grab it back and was punched to his left cheek. He suffered no visible injuries. The two robbers ran away with the victim’s phone.

Doveton mosque warmth By Cam Lucadou-Wells Doveton locals are warming to a proposed mosque approved for the second time by City of Casey, says proponent Rokhan Akbar. The Afghan Islamic Centre and Omar Farooq Mosque’s re-application at 25-31 Green Street was given the green light at a council meeting on 16 July, after the original permit lapsed in 2018. Just three objections were received by the council. Two from neighbours in the same industrial estate, and none from adjoining residents. It was in stark contrast to the storm of opposition from residents and Catch the Fire Ministries supporters against the mosque’s
original proposal in 2014. Mr Akbar says much changed during a recent open day at its current hall at Photinia Street, held in the wake of the shocking massacres at Christchurch mosques. “There was an outpouring of sympathy. Five hundred people turned up - we had some local MPs, Victoria Police offices and the local residents. “We welcomed them with open arms. We showed that these were places of solidarity and friendship. “It broke down the barriers.” At the council meeting, Cr Wayne Smith said that the mosque was in an appropriate site and “met all of the requirements”. Cr Smith said that none of the residents that
objected in 2014 had even contacted him this time round. “Whether or not they thought there was no point (in objecting), who knows?” In its second version, a larger mosque with a larger 216-space onsite car park was proposed on a larger site of four lots. The 2200-square-metre building will stand 10 metres tall with 14-metre-high minaret towers. It will attract up to 300 for Friday prayers, about 250 for condolence services on weekends, up to 400 during the month of Ramadan and 600 for two Eid prayers a year. On most days, it will be visited by up to 100. The mosque had outgrown its current hall, with a capacity for up to 160 visitors.
It will utilise extra adjoining land at Green Street, sold by Pastor Daniel Nalliah’s Catch The Fire Ministries - which had been set to build a church next door. Cr Rosalie Crestani, who hails from Mr Nalliah’s Rise Up Australia Party, was opposed the original and latest proposals. She noted the addition of a morgue “just a very small stone’s throw” from adjoining resident’s back fenceline. During its heavily-attended Friday prayer service, its industrial neighbours may be “locked down from conducting their business”, she said. “I think this would be a poor development for the area.”
Little India waits for news By Cam Lucadou-Wells Questions loomed large from Little India traders at an information session on Foster Street's redevelopment on 17 July. About 50 attended to find out more on the entire 1.9-hectare precinct being put out to market as a mixed-use area by State Government agency Development Victoria. Expressions-of-interest will be open for about a month, closing in early August. At the meeting, Bikaner Sweets owner Harbir Yadav told Star News that during works, he and other traders should be housed together in a temporary Little India precinct close to Foster Street. "They should definitely keep us together rather than asking us to find separate places. "Little India has got a unique name, a really strong market presence across Australia." He said its uncertain future had deterred
EVERY TUESDAY
investors and customers. "There's been a lot of speculation over whether it's going to be staying there or not, and whether it's keeping its essence." Mr Yadav's store has worked hard to survive a disastrous disruption to Little India during Revitalising Central Dandenong demolitions and roadworks a decade ago. He hoped a more "constructive" approach would prevail in the next phase of RCD. "They could inject some high-density accommodation but it's important they don't lose the culture of Little India. "We have been running the shop since 2006. It would be heartbreaking to take it away after we put in so much hard work." Nikita Fashions owner Shameela Singh said she hoped to have a newly designed shop with modern fittings and more customer parking. She wanted to see a more diverse precinct

"We knew this development has been coming. It's nothing new, and I think the State Government will retain the cultural precinct in a new form. "I've been here 18 years and I'm ready for
doing business for another 20." Development Victoria representatives said it was too early to answer key questions such as the transition plan for traders and what developers had expressed interest. It expects the community to be consulted on its design in late 2020, with rebuilding to occur in 2023.

School ‘surprised’ by lane By Cam Lucadou-Wells A school principal has slammed the lack of timely consultation on the addition of on-road bike lanes on Corrigan Road, Noble Park. On their return from term holidays, students, parents and staff at Resurrection School were greeted by the road converted to onelane for traffic, one for bikes. According to the council, the traffic-calming measure aims to reduce excessive speeding and to create a safer space for cyclists and pedestrians. Principal Jane Dunstone said it slowed car movements to a “crawl”. Drivers were banking up behind cars waiting to turn right into side streets and the school, and vehicles were waiting a long time to enter Corrigan Road, she observed. She’d never seen a cyclist ride past - in the past week or indeed the past six years, she said. The “surprise” for the school was the lack
of consultation from Greater Dandenong Council. “We were alerted to it in mid-June and didn’t have a chance to bring it to the school board (before the line markings went in).” During the holidays, parish priest Father Brian Collins, rather than the school, received a council fact sheet on road rules for drivers using the remarked road. The information was passed onto the school, which then immediately notified parents, Ms Dunstone said. “It’s unfortunate the way it’s unfolded. It doesn’t do much for the credibility of the council putting this forward. “The least they can do is consult with the community before they jump in.” Ms Dunstone said that it was “a bonus that cars aren’t passing or charging past”. “The specific parking bays are also a bit of a bonus.” The council says an initial notification was
mailed to more than 500 residents in the area. It is now sending 2000 notices to a wider area. Mayor Roz Blades said council staff observed the traffic impacts at Resurrection School and Wallarano Primary School after school resumed. The officers were due to report their findings on 19 July. Cr Blades said drivers had expressed confusion over the road regulations. One hotspot for motorists was difficulties turning out of Wallarano Drive and a build-up of traffic behind cars turning left into Kingsclere Avenue, Cr Blades said. Cr Tim Dark says he’s lodged a notice-ofmotion to have the line markings revert to their original state. He said he’d received complaints from parents about logjams during school pick up and drop off. “Anytime between 8 and 9am is apparently mayhem.”
Cr Matthew Kirwan said the new road markings made Corrigan Road safer. It was a matter of motorists getting used to changed conditions. “The opposition to Corrigan Road is more vociferous because Cr Dark has fanned the flames on social media. “The aspect to keep in mind is whether it’s worse of no different through very brief times in the day. “That has to be balanced with whether we’ve made the road safer for 23 hours a day. It’s worth it in the trade-off.” Cr Kirwan said there had been minimal complaints of a similar treatment on Gladstone Road, Dandenong North - which also adjoins nearby schools. The bike lane will attract cyclists - just as more are starting to use Gladstone Road, he says. “The reason they haven’t used Corrigan Road is it hasn’t been safe.”
Bike lanes are safer: cyclist By Cam Lucadou-Wells Dandenong North cyclist Nyssa Sims was at first a sceptic about on-road bicycle lanes. She is now a regular rider on Gladstone Road, converted by the lane’s wide sanctuary. On the main, apart from going around the occasional parked car, it puts a safe buffer from cars. “They’re a lot wider than lots that you see around. “And because they’re wide, it feels quite safe compared to other bike lanes. “It’s certainly better than nothing.” It’s a similar treatment to the controversial new markings on Corrigan Road in Noble Park. Ms Sims hasn’t ridden Corrigan Road before
but often uses the Gladstone Road lanes, then travels in the Princes Highway service lanes to Dandenong. Before the bike lanes went into Gladstone Road, cars would drive nearer to the left and give her less space. She would resort to a safer and more circuitous route to Dandenong. Generally Ms Sims sees more riders using the footpath than the bike lanes - she presumes because they feel safer. “Personally I feel it should be legal to ride on the footpath. “When you’re out here in Dandenong, people aren’t as used to cyclists on the road.” Ms Sims said there was also a lack of connection between bike paths and lanes, which

tween cars and bikes). “But on a lot of these roads you can’t do it. There’s not enough room.”
Outlook brightens after a few washes By Cam Lucadou-Wells The Orange Sky Australia mobile laundry service is not just about washing and drying clothes, says volunteer Shaylee De Lange. For its homeless clientele, it's also the chance for positive and genuine connection with dedicated and attentive volunteers. "It's important to let their voices be heard," she said. Ms De Lange is service manager for the Melbourne South East region, which recently celebrated its 5000th load of washing in just three years. She still joins in the shifts, about 10 stops a week in the area including Dandenong, Doveton, Narre Warren, Cranbourne, Pakenham, Chelsea and Frankston. A lot of women escaping domestic violence have been arriving lately. One weekly visitor, who lived in her car,
started with nothing but a small pile of clothes. Gradually the amount of clothes have grown, and short-term accommodation has been found. The brightness has returned to the woman's face, Ms De Lange says. The laundry is also an important link to other services, such as housing, free showers and food. Beside her volunteering, Ms De Lange works with a City of Casey community centre and organises the affordably-priced Doveton Show. She started at Orange Sky while studying a diploma in international development. She came to understand that homelessness was not just an issue overseas but also in Australia, she says. She also learnt a lot on the job by listening to others. "Joining Orange Sky was one of the best
things I've ever done. "I've learnt that it's not just about giving back but allowing people who are struggling to have a voice." Ms De Lange looks at some of the gaps in human services - such as a shortage of affordable housing and mental health services. Many of Orange Sky's clients have long waits for mental health treatment, as well as drug and alcohol services. Without permanent fixed addresses, they also can't claim any welfare benefits. "A lot of people don't listen to what their issues and concerns are. "A lot of programs got up with funding from the government or organisations - but they don't go to the needs and issues that they're facing." To find out more about Orange Sky go to orangesky.org.au

$250,000 crime spree By Brendan Rees An ice-addicted South-East tradie who broke into a number of homes, stealing a car, electronics, jewellery, and other items totalling about $250,000 has been jailed. Dejan Culibrk of Cranbourne North pleaded guilty in the Victorian County Court sitting in Melbourne on 12 July to 24 charges including burglary, theft, obtaining property by deception, and possessing a drug of dependence. The 33-year-old carpenter’s crime spree began in July, 2017 when broke into a home in Cranbourne West where he had been employed by the owner to carry out roof repairs, Judge Richard Smith said. There he stole various electronic items and jewellery worth about $15,000 as well as a credit card which was used to purchase goods on 24 occasions. On 29 October, 2017 he gained entry into a residential property in Dandenong South, stealing power tools, computers, an iPhone and other items worth about $14,400 - three days after failing to attend court on bail. In another break-in at a construction site in Clyde North between the 29th and 30th of November, he stole television sets, a computer, an iPad, a telephone, and other items worth about $7,245, Judge Smith said. On 8 December police arrested Culibrk who was in possession of anabolic steroids and oxycodone. Less than a week later Culibrk filled up his car with fuel at a BP service station in Cranbourne and drove off without paying. Within the same month, Culibrk ransacked
a residential property in Lyndhurst with a cooffender, stealing items totalling about $28,000 as well as a Toyota Camry, Judge Smith said Police arrested Culibrk and his brother on 2 January, 2018 after they forced entry into a Braeside business, stealing safety gear items, cash, and assorted keys. The court heard Culibrk was in possession of the keys to the stolen Camry, a hunting knife, and three Stanley knives. Police executed warrants at two residential properties in Hampton Park and Cranbourne North, seizing a number of stolen goods. In sentencing, Judge Smith told Culibrk these two houses were the subject of forfeiture orders and “may have to be sold in the near future,” with his family facing the possibility of having to “move from them.” Born in Yugoslavia, Culibrk migrated to Australia aged six with his family, the court was told. He worked with his father in the construction industry but a failed attempt to start his own business led him to gambling and using ice daily as well as methamphetamines. The court heard Culibrk’s defence argued his thefts had “elements of hoarding behaviour.” “I think it’s highly likely that your burglaries (and) thefts were conducted with financial gain in mind,” Judge Smith said. “You appear to be the instigator of such offending conduct - a beneficiary of the goods stolen by you.” Culibrk was sentenced to up to five years’ jail, with a non-parole period of three years.

Having a ball with top Dog Kids and families flocked to Noble Park Football Club for a free family fun night on 17 July. Western Bulldogs premiership hero Liam Picken was the star attraction at the Patterson Cheney Toyota 'Good for Footy' event. All the rest was a flurry of footballs - some headed for the handball target, others as part of footy games and an obstacle course. Visitors took the chance to soar high over the pack as they scaled a rock-climbing wall. While others snagged food from the free barbie. Diving, usually a no-no on the field, was particularly popular at the Dunk The Coach event. There was no shortage of young volunteers lining up to aim balls at the dunking machine, and plunge their coaches into its icy waters.

His life for others By Casey Neill
Lee Tarlamis.
Lee Tarlamis says his older brother’s cancer battle inspired him to spend his life helping those less fortunate. His service culminated in a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, announced on Monday 11 June. The Noble Park man and former state Upper House MP received the nod for service to the people and Parliament of Victoria “I’m extremely humbled. It’s not something that I’d expected,” he said. “I didn’t do it to get acknowledgement. “It was about wanting to provide assistance and help to people. “It’s a view that I formed very early on.” Mr Tarlamis said his brother fought cancer for two years before dying at age 17. “The trouble and the stress that the family went through, I saw how positive he was
throughout those two years,” he said. “It instilled in me that as tough as I think I have things, there are always people out there who are doing it a lot worse than me. “That’s why I got involved in the local community.” Initially that was through the Keysborough Learning Centre. “The centre loaned me a computer for me to do my school work,” he said.

“I wanted to repay the favour so I was volunteering time with them.” There he met then-politician Eddie Micallef and became his electorate officer. “That’s how I got into the politics world,” Mr Tarlamis said. “That opened up a lot of opportunities to provide assistance to community groups.” He never intended to run for parliament, but “one thing lead to another which lead to another” and he was a South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP from 2010 to 2014. “That was such an honour as well, when you consider the fact that very few people get to hold that position and represent that large number of people,” he said. Mr Tarlamis was a Springvale Benevolent Society volunteer from 2002 to 2012, a Noble Park Community Action Forum member for many years, a founding Springvale Multicultural Men’s Shed committee member, and more.
He’s now a senior advisor to Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings. The world of politics is not where he thought he’d end up. The Tarlamis family moved from Oakleigh to Keysborough when he was eight months old. He went to Wallarano Primary School in Noble Park and to Chandler Secondary College, where Keysborough College’s Acacia campus now stands. Mr Tarlamis went on to study an associate diploma of business. “I grew up working with dad in the family businesses,” he said. “I thought it would be logical that I would go into the business world and maybe into management or something like that. “I really enjoyed the community stuff. “Politics became that vehicle to do it.”

Seven people across Melbourne's south eastern suburbs were arrested on Wednesday 17 July as part of an investigation into an organised drug syndicate. Police seized several thousand cannabis plants as part of Operation Escapist after executing warrants at a number of commercial and residential premises in Pakenham, Dandenong South, Springvale, Rowville, Carrum Downs, Waterways and Clayton South. Several significant hydroponic cannabis set-ups were located within factory buildings, with approximately 1000 plants being held in some of the buildings. Drug manufacturing equipment, cocaine and cash were also located and seized during the raids. Detective Acting Superintendent Craig Darlow said the results were significant for Melbourne.
"Drug manufacture, trafficking and use in the Victorian community continues to be a major concern for police," Mr Darlow said. "Operations like this highlight the links that drugs have to organised crime, plus we are seeing time and time again that many of our most violent crimes such as homicides and shootings have their roots in the drug trade. "The hydros that have been located today are absolutely on the larger end of the scale and we're looking at seizing several thousand plants as part of this operation." Carrying out the raids were members from the Clandestine Laboratory Squad, along with detectives from Crime Command and members of the Australian Federal Police and Australian Border Force. The four men and three women arrested will now be interviewed by police.

Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society
100 years ago 24 July 1919 The Dandenong Bridge Messrs Reilly Bros are now making rapid progress in the work of erecting the concrete bridge across the Dandenong Creek, on the main road. Residents of the surrounding district, as well as town's people, will be please to learn that in the course of 5 or 6 weeks the bridge will be open for traffic. Many people when speaking of the "old blue stone bridge" were under the impression that the structure was the first to span the creek, but such is not the case. An old lithographic plan issued in 1856, shows a wooden structure across the stream, from the willows near the bridge, along what was known as Hemmings Lake, crossing the road about 50 yards, from the present bridge, and running
along where there was, at one time, a rubbish tip in the creek, Recent excavations made revealed some of the old piles and bed logs of the original bridge. The plan referred to also shows a stockyard and hut on the council reserve where the Drill Hall new stands.

26 July 1999 Letters to Editor Grants too exclusive
28 July 2014 Merger Mess
Community grants should be allocated in a fairer manner. Reviewing Greater Dandenong Council's grant allocations, I could not help but form the opinion that there was a large bias towards exclusive groups at the expense of non-exclusive groups. In my opinion, it would appear that one stood a very good chance of receiving a grant if one's organization was comprised of members of either minority ethnic group or a minority religious group, or senior citizens or alcoholics, or retail traders, or those who have an interest in AIDS prevention. By contrast, the non-exclusive groups who were mainly involved with hobby, cultural and sporting activities, appear to have had most of their applications rejected.
Why continue with a merger? That's the question hanging over Chandler Park Primary School and the former Marelinga Primary School. The Keysborough schools came together five years ago but are still operating from separate campuses and waiting for funding to accommodate all students at Chandler. Principal Peter Paul spoke out in the Journal in May when the $5.7 million needed didn't appear in the 2014/15 state budget, and last week met with Education Department t representatives. "They made the statement that there's not a thing we can do to promote the cause any further," he said. "If we don't have any time frame then we're not changing much. "Let the two schools get on with it."

Bail derailed after alleged car-chase in Endeavour Hills By Cam Lucadou-Wells A driver barred from driving as part of his bail has been arrested after allegedly leading police on a fast car-chase through Endeavour Hills. Andrew Gianforte, of Carrum Downs, had been seen accelerating at a “fast rate of speed” near the corner of Hanna Drive and Heatherton Road on Monday 15 July, police told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. Police allegedly chased his vehicle south onto Matthew Flinders Avenue. At rapid speed, his vehicle went onto the wrong side of the road as it entered a roundabout and turned west at Monkhouse Drive.
He narrowly avoided cars approaching the roundabout, according to police. Gianforte parked the car less than 100 metres away in Thurmood Court, where he got out and walked away from the car. Police said he didn’t provide a drivers’ license when asked. He was arrested as he tried to flee back into the vehicle. Police seized prescription medications from a cooler bag in the front seat. Gianforte was arrested on site, and blew a 0.105 bloodalcohol reading - more than twice the legal limit. He was charged with dangerous driving and other driving offences, as well as possessing
prescription medication without a prescription. The court was told that Gianforte was a disqualified driver at the time, who was barred from driving or using drugs as part of his bail conditions. He had pending charges of trafficking meth, as well as possession of prescription drugs and controlled weapons to be heard at Ringwood Magistrates Court on 31 July. Gianforte, who represented himself, told the bail hearing on 16 July that “I did make a mistake with the driving” and that he’d panicked. He argued for bail because he was getting
“good results” on the CISP program as well as needing to support ailing loved-ones. “I don’t believe I’m a risk.” Magistrate Ian McGrane said he wasn’t satisfied that Gianforte met the “exceptional circumstances” test for bail. He said the accused had shown a “complete disregard to conditions of bail”, and was a risk to the public. “Your driving, on the evidence before the court, was abysmal - you were affected by alcohol at the least.” Gianforte was remanded for a represented bail hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 29 July.

NEWS
Thunder is in the clear By Cam Lucadou-Wells Dandenong Thunder and its fans have been cleared by a Football Victoria tribunal (FV) from any involvement in a violent crowd melee in June. In findings released on 15 July, Thunder and its opponent Altona Magic were found not guilty of misconduct at an NPL Victoria game at Paisley Park, Altona North. The tribunal instead found three North Sunshine Eagles Soccer Club fans guilty of violent misconduct. It issued a life ban to one of the accused spectators Besnik Kutleshi, and two-year bans to Arsim Kutleshi and George Briskovic. Video footage at the game showed punching and stomping among the large brawl, as well as spitting and shouting at players over the sideline fence. Up to five security guards were required to
A spectator, right, jumps and spits at players and officials over the security fence at the Altona v Dandenong Thunder match. calm the scene and escort spectators out of the stadium. Police were also called to the scene. The accused trio were instructed not to give
evidence due to an ongoing police investigation into the incident, the three-person tribunal reported. It also slapped a $10,000 suspended fine on the Eagles, which was not playing at the venue at the time. The fine was suspended due to the club's co-operation, the tribunal report stated. In a statement, Football Victoria reiterated that Thunder was found not to be involved, contrary to claims made during its official live stream commentary at the time. "Accordingly (we) want to correct the NPL Victoria live stream broadcast suggesting any involvement." Thunder president Ronnie Mustafai said the finding was a "great relief" after a nervous month's wait since the 15 June match. "We were pretty nervous waiting to see what was going to happen.
"The main thing is the club's name has been cleared." He said the club had been "tarnished" by the live commentary at the time, which went viral in subsequent days. "The moment our sponsors, parents, players see it on the news and social media they think 'OK it's Dandenong Thunder'. "That was pretty upsetting to us." Mr Mustafai said the club had worked hard to build a supporter culture around respect for the game and the opposition. "We aim to make it a family-friendly environment, for them to just enjoy the game." Soon after the match, both Dandenong and Altona clubs were quick to deny their supporters' involvement. Their assertions were backed up by tribunal evidence from four match officials identifying the North Sunshine fans.

Protesters are locked out By Brendan Rees A strong police and security guard was present at Bunjil Place after rowdy anti-mosque protesters were locked out of a Casey council meeting on Tuesday 16 July. About 70 angry protesters were kept out of a council chamber room where councillors approved plans for a mosque in Narre Warren North. The mob was forced to view a live broadcast of the meeting on a big screen in a room next door where about 200 chairs had been set up. The closed door meeting was described by some as “orchestrated” and “manipulative” with councillors not wanting to “hear our objections.” Only about 20 people were allowed to sit in the same room as councillors. One protester shouted “cowards” when he realised he could not enter. According to a council document, 859 objections were received to the Saarban Islamic Trust’s application for a proposed a mosque on Belgrave-Hallam Road in Narre Warren North. It’s proposed to provide 226 car spaces, and cater up to 372 patrons. Four Oaks Ward Cr Rosalie Crestani put forward a completely opposite motion to what was originally recommended by council officers who advised councillors to go ahead with the mosque plan. Cr Crestani said the proposal was inconsistent with the purpose of the Green Wedge A Zone, particularly the conservation and enhancement of the character of the semi-rural landscape. The mosque’s operational hours would result “in a detrimental impact on the amenity of the area,” she explained. One objector, she said, stated the proposed building would increase traffic, particularly near two primary schools, “potentially putting

Cr Stapeldon said the applicants “went over and above” with their plans, adding the mosque would “blend in with the environment and with the community.” When asked why the public had been barred from entering the meeting she said “We thought it was all going to be fine but history tells us that it wasn’t always the case.” “We were working with VicPol (Victoria Police) to make sure everyone was safe.” Neighbour Terry Ryan who who moved to the area 20 years ago for the rural landscape said he was disappointed with council’s decision.

“They didn’t answer questions that the community have asked over recent months,” he said. Cr Wayne Smith said the council report had “good grounds” of approving the proposed mosque. “It doesn’t look anything like a mosque. You’re going to be pretty hard pressed to see much of the building from the road anyway,” he said. After the plan was approved, protesters stormed out of the room next door. Valentina Crnkovic of Endeavour Hills shouted the split room set-up “stunk”. “It was orchestrated so that they didn’t hear our objections,” she said. “This was predetermined - that screen was only for show. There was no room for discussion, there was no views, no public opinion, there was nothing considered in this meeting,” Ms Crnkovic said. Another protester Mark, who asked his surname not to be published said: “We’re not saying we want to hate anyone,” but “Islam has produced itself and proven itself to be what the four letter word we call evil - against the values in our system.” “Obviously money has gone into the back pockets of some of these people,” he said. The meeting was also live-streamed on Facebook which garnered more than 3,000 views.

STAR JOURNAL 17
SPORT
Heartbreaking finish hurts By Tyler Lewis In its first match of the recent National Championships, the Vic Country under-18 side travelled to Tasmania to complete one of the bigger demolition jobs of the Allies in the tournament's history, winning 18.8 (116) to 2.7 (19). Country co-captain Caleb Serong may have travelled across Bass Strait listed at 83 kilograms but after his three-goal, best afield performance, the Gippsland Power superstar came home carrying the weight of expectations. Dandenong Stingrays prospects Cody Weightman (four goals) and Hayden Young were also at their destructive best in the big win. In the second match of the tournament, the derby between Metro and Country took to the home of football, the MCG. Hayden Young relished in the wide open spaces of the 'G, navigating his side to a 9.10 (64) to 7.9 (51) victory. Young's stablemate Ned Cahill (two goals) also enjoyed the big stage while Power midfielder Sam Flanders was strong against Metro, as were likely number one and two draft picks Matthew Rowell and Noah Anderson. Vic Country went toe-to-toe with South Australia at GMHBA Stadium in its third match of the tournament and got the chocolates late in the game through pure brilliance from Weightman, Flanders and Serong, winning 9.9 (63) to 9.8 (62). Weightman (four goals) put Country level late in the final term while Flanders and Serong kept the statisticians busy. Serong finished with 33 disposals, nine tackles and 10 clearances and his Gippsland teammate collected 28 disposals, seven marks and 10 clearances in a stellar display that shook the suspected selections in November. With Western Australia breathing down the neck of Vic Country on the ladder, the final game at Marvel Stadium was essentially the grand final of the championship. Western Australia got off to a blistering start and put Country on the back foot. Sam De
Stingray Ned Cahill was a part of the thrilling finish of Vic Country's final match. 192826 Koning, who has transformed from a wingman to a key defender after growing 13 centimetres in the space of a year, was sublime - taking numerous intercept marks across half-back and keeping his side in it at the first break. After a slow start, Country was chasing for the remainder of the day but worked its way back into the match in the third and final term. But it was the final three minutes that captured the nation's attention.
Hayden Young won a free kick and with 2:59 on the clock, looked inside and weighted an unbelievable 60-metre pass to Isaac Wareham in the middle of the ground who then went on to the top of the square where Cahill soccered his side in front with 2:42 remaining. With 25 minute terms, the clock continued to tick while the ball was being transferred back to the centre and when the umpire balled it up in the middle of the ground Country was up by one point with 1:51 to go.
Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS When Gippsland star Riley Baldi demonstrated his football intelligence by taking his time getting up from the contest on top of the ball and Caleb Serong laid a ferocious tackle, Country seemed home. But with less than a minute to go, Western Australia snatched the unwinnable through the final kick of the game off the boot of Regan Clarke, which handed the side its inaugural national championship - downing Country 6.10 (46) to 7.9 (51).
Storm heads to Dandenong’s grassroots Mates fire for Victoria The stars of Melbourne Storm headed out to the grassroots of rugby league and met up with more than 1800 junior and senior footballers, including the Dandenong-based South Eastern Titans, last week. In conjunction with NRL Victoria, the club's NRL squad members visited 17 Melbourne region clubs on 16 and 17 July as part of the 'Storm in Your Club' campaign to promote the growth of rugby league and the benefits of playing the game. A special jersey exchange was a highlight of each visit. Each host club was presented with a signed 2019 Melbourne Storm home jersey and, in return, the Storm players in attendance received the local club's jersey to wear at an upcoming Storm training session. Storm captain Cameron Smith said the squad enjoyed the opportunity to get back to local footy. "Along with a growing membership base at Storm, which is on track for another record in 2019, the number of men and women, boys and girls playing rugby league in our home city continues to increase which is great news for the game," Smith said. "NRL Victoria and the volunteers who help to run each of the clubs are doing fantastic work in building rugby league's grassroots base and we'll be recognising this with Storm in Your Club." NRL Victoria general manager Brent Silva said it was a wonderful initiative from the Storm. "The rugby league community of Victoria are very fortunate and grateful to have such a wonderful NRL club as Melbourne Storm supporting local grassroots football," he said. "Club-based participation in rugby league in Victoria has grown year on year for the past 13 consecutive years and is on track to achieve 18 STAR JOURNAL

"The support that Melbourne Storm provides NRL Victoria has certainly contributed to the ongoing in the interest to play this great game. "The fact that Melbourne Storm players take time out of their schedule in the middle of the season to personally visit our local Melbourne clubs demonstrates a clear desire to
see the game grow at all levels in Victoria. "This is certainly appreciated by everyone, and in particular the kids and volunteers at each club who got a great kick out of having Storm in their club." Other south-east clubs, including the Doveton Steelers and Pakenham Eels, also received a visit from the Storm.
Two exciting young cricket stars, Ollie Moran and Zac Grech, helped the Victorian under-15 boys pull off a remarkable win in the National Indoor Cricket Championships on 12 July. Coming up against indoor powerhouse Queensland, 15-year-old Moran and 14-yearold Grech from the south-eastern suburbs were prolific in leading the Vics to a narrow one-run grand final victory in front of a packed home crowd at Casey Stadium. The duo's match-winning batting partnership was hugely influential in the win, while each of the boys took a wicket bowling. Moran also displayed some incredible wicket keeping, including a breathtaking stumping off teammate Prathan Raje. In what was a thrilling contest all day, it was only fitting that Grech was batting and able to see out the last two balls of the match and Moran was named player of the grand final. The game was described by seasoned commentator Gary Lowe as the "one of the best games of indoor cricket you'll ever see!" The boys - who are also close mates - have a history of exceptional performances and firing in the big games. Moran top scored in the Vic Metro Allen Shield grand final in 2018 and assisted in a crucial run out, helping the team win the title. Last year, Grech was named player of the grand final and player of the tournament at the Under 13s Indoor Nationals, earning selection for Australia at the World Series in New Zealand. In a standout performance at the series, he was Australia's leading wicket-taker and made more runs than any player at the tournament across all age groups. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

The Eagles do it for Corrie By Nick Creely
Doveton Eagles great Corrie Wilson is mobbed by teammates after kicking a goal in his milestone game. 195688 the Hammers roared home with three of the four final term goals to just fall short. In Division 3, Hampton Park was a class above Ashwood, 15.14 (104) to 4.10 (34), while Endeavour Hills banked an away win against Black Rock 13.14 (92) to 2.4 (16). In Division 4, Hallam won a thriller against Frankston Dol-
phins, 7.8 (50) to 7.5 (47), while Lyndale went down to Carrum Patterson Lakes, 13.21 (99) to 5.12 (42). In the Eastern Football League, Noble Park went down to the powerful Vermont at home, 18.18 (126) to 9.6 (60), with Kyle Martin (four goals) playing almost a lone hand for the Bulls in another brilliant display from the

After 14 rounds, Rowville is well-placed for finals, sitting in fourth spot, while Noble Park needs to get a move on, sitting in seventh.

Dandenong South Primary School student Kaydam Andersen is an athlete well and truly on the rise. She harbours aspirations to one day represent her country, but like all up and coming sporting stars, she is determined to work her way to the top. Kaydam is set to represent Victoria from 18 September to 23 September this year as part of the School Sport Victoria team, 10 to 12 Track and Field State Team, which will compete in the School Sport Australia Championship in Darwin, Northern Territory. It has been a great performance by Kaydam following a selection process to make the final team, where she will be running in the 800-metre and 1500-metre events. Kaydam said she was very much looking forward to representing her state in the coming months, after venturing into the sport a few years ago.
dedication, patience and plenty of training. "I am a very proud competitor, with lots of energy, endurance and passion," she said. "I train three times a week and still focus on all my regional and State competitions." Kaydam - who is hoping a strong championships performance can propel her to one day represent her country in either the Commonwealth Games or Olympics - has plenty of people to thank. "I want to thank my mum, dad, brother and sisters and family, and my coaches, Nick and John from DSA, Sandringham LAC, Bayside XC, and my PE teacher Brent Van Rooyen," she said. Corrie Wilson has long been a champion of local footy, particularly for his beloved Doveton Eagles, and it was only fitting that his side could flex its muscles and bank a huge Southern Football League Division 2 win in his milestone game. The Eagles brushed aside the third-placed Keysborough at home on Saturday to break a game clear second in Wilson's 250th senior appearance for the club and his 350th game of footy overall, 20.14 (134) to 9.12 (66). Wilson's footballing resume is long and expansive. It includes multiple premierships, and league best and fairests, as well as almost a dozen club champion awards, and in a game with so much on the line, he used all of his class to help bring down the ever-dangerous Burras. The Eagles held just a one-point advantage at the first break but, with all of their forward depth and overwhelming midfield dominance, surged ahead to a 34-point lead at the major break. The visitors enjoyed a better third term on the scoreboard, but still leaked nine goals as the Eagles' forwards put on a show, kicking away to a major percentage-boosting win and further cementing themselves in the top two. Apart from Wilson - who had the ball on a string as he has been known for - Cameron Carmody, Nick Beer and Michael Callinan had a major impact on the contest, while Adam Read had an impressive day down forward with four majors. For the Burras, who will look to quickly move on from the disappointing result, Matt Carnelley provided a target to boot three, while Dion Elefantis battled hard. Ladder-leader Springvale Districts, meanwhile, also banked a crucial win, holding off a fast-finishing Hampton side away from home, 9.9 (63) to 8.10 (58). The Dees led by 20 at the final change, but
