Public bus surge The Bellarine Peninsula will benefit from increased bus services on weekends, the state government announced. Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville announced three extra weekend services on the four bus routes that run to and from towns on the Bellarine. The new bus services and timetables, however, will not be available until December this year.
Route 55 Ocean Grove via Barwon Heads, Route 56 Ocean Grove via Leopold, Route 60 St Leonards via Portarlington and Route 61 Drysdale via Clifton Springs/Leopold will each get three extra services, helping better connect with train services departing from Geelong. As part of the change, all Route 61 services will be extended to the Bayview shopping centre in Curlewis and new bus stops will be
built at the shopping centre and on Centennial Boulevard. Currently the last No 55 bus to depart from Ocean Grove to Geelong on Saturday is at 6.43pm. From Geelong to Ocean Grove is at 8.15pm. On a Sunday, the last No 55 bus leaves Geelong at 5.04pm. The last bus from Ocean Grove to Geelong departs at 4.41pm. "These new bus services will make a huge
difference for anyone having a day out in Melbourne or heading into Geelong," Ms Neville said. "We're giving Bellarine locals more efficient and reliable public transport that will get you where you need to go sooner." Timetable information, available a month prior to the changes, can be found at ptv.vic. gov.au.

Allen toast of the coast By Mark Heenan Ocean Grove Golf Club local Allen Cover was the 'toast of the coast' this month after he celebrated his 100th birthday in style on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. Around 60 of Allen's closest family and friends attended his special century milestone party in the plush sunshine surrounds of Maroochydore's Chateau Royale. The great grandfather puts his longevity down to good health and staying out of trouble from the law. "I have done well to keep (away) from the hands of the law and I haven't come into much trouble over the years with the law," chuckled Allen, who served as Catalina pilot during WWII. He said residing at Cotton Tree on the Sunshine Coast mid-year was a factor in his prolonged life. "You come up here and you recharge your batteries because the climate up here is quite different to Ocean Grove, you enjoy the sunshine and you get a good dose of vitamin D," Allen said. Allen, who lives in Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads for nine months of the year, escapes the Bellarine winter chill to head north with son Paul and daughter-in-law Wendy. Paul said his wife and father had been travelling north every winter to the Sunshine Coast for the last seven years, which helped Allen's journey to a century. "We have a great unit here which faces north and it has the sun all day which is great for dad - he loves the sun," said Paul. "It makes our job easier than looking after him in Ocean Grove where we are struggling to keep him warm." Grandson Tyron Cover, a star golfer at Ocean Grove, made the quick dash from his Fijian adventure and jetted back to Melbourne
before boarding a flight to the Sunshine Coast, to make Allen's birthday on the day. Paul said news of his father's 100th birthday had spread across the Sunshine Coast and came to attention of a fellow Ocean Grove Golf Club member staying in the leafy suburb of Caloundra. The golf club member at Ocean Grove came and visited Allen on his big day after reading an article in the Sunshine Coast My Weekly Preview July edition about his 100th birthday milestone. "One of the highlights was the fact that magazine circulating along the coast," Paul said. "There was a member from the Ocean Grove Golf Club that was staying down in Caloundra at the caravan park and he picked up the magazine on the Friday night and read the article about Dad and said 'there is no way known I am going to miss calling in and seeing Allen. "Unbeknown to him we had a party going, he popped right in two minutes (before) 10am (when the party started) which was unbelievable." When Allen arrives home in September, he will take part in the 'Allen Cover Cup' at Ocean Grove Golf Club on Friday 11 October. Allen generally plays golf once a week with club veterans on a Friday when at home on the Bellarine, has been member of the Ocean Grove Golf Club for the last 35 years. "I have had a pretty long retirement," Allen laughed. Ocean Grove Golf Club president Peter Cullen said this year's 'Allen Cover Cup' took on special significance with Allen's 100th birthday. Cullen confirmed Allen was an 'honorary' member of golf club. "We made him what we call an 'honorary member' for the rest of his life," Cullen said.
CENTURY: Allen Cover with his great grandchildren Isabella and Ben cutting his 100th birthday cake. "I think the club is very proud of the fact he is a member of our club and he is still playing to this day."
Allen has 10 grandchildren and four great grandchildren, and another great grandchild on the way.

Perry is a true life saver By Justin Flynn Ocean Grove's Perry Davis has been presented with an award for saving the life of a man in Queensland. Mr Davis was presented with a certificate of admission to the Resuscitation Club of the Royal Australian Life Saving Society at the Horseshoe Bay Resort in Bowen on 14 July. Mr Davis has been travelling to Bowen in North Queensland each winter for six years with wife Cris. While playing social tennis he noticed a man had fallen on an adjacent court. Frank Hart, then 81, had collapsed and was suffering from cardiac arrest. Mr and Mrs Davis, a nurse, rushed to his side. "I dropped the racquet and ran," Mr Davis said. "Frank was on the ground with a bit of blood coming from his head. "We couldn't find a pulse so we started CPR within 30 seconds. "Cris has a breathing problem so she held his head while I did CPR." Mr Davis has a mild form of cerebral palsy on the left-hand side of his body, which forced him to perform CPR with one arm for 15 minutes until an ambulance arrived. Mr Hart fortunately survived and texted him the next day. "He has a really dry sense of humour and said, 'Did you see the horse who stood on my chest?'," said Mr Davis, who works as an educator at Queenscliff's Marine Discovery Centre. "He showed me pictures of all the bruising. It was such a relief." The two were now the best of mates, Mr Davis said. "You only get one life and he was very grateful. "We're so happy to have Frank and we are really close to his family and happy is still coming up (from Illawarra) to Bowen each year."

David hands over the reins Incoming Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club president Chris Paterson took over the reins from the outgoing David Pavia who stood down at the club's annual general meeting. Mr Pavia spent three years as club president and oversaw Ocean Grove SLSC's new building move into the state-of-the-art refurbished surrounds at Surf Beach Road after a complex building redevelopment which commenced in early 2018. Mr Pavia said he was proud with what had been achieved in his time as president with delivery of tje new clubrooms and record numbers at the club now closing in on 1000 members. He confirmed he would stand down from the role after its new clubhouse opened recently. "After 12 years on the committee of management, and three years as president, it is time to step down as president," he told OGSLSC members in a statement. "I am proud of what has been achieved with
the successful delivery of the new clubrooms and record numbers of patrol and sport participants which is a testament to the strength of OGSLSC." Mr Paterson paid tribute to Mr Pavia's tireless work for the Ocean Grove SLSC and the wider community. Mr Pavia will continue to stay involved as an active member of club and will remain on the club's building sub-committee. "David has not only worked tirelessly as club president over the past three years but also as a member of the building sub-committee, the constitution committee and the new building operations club committee," Mr Paterson told the Voice. "He has played a vital role in helping secure sponsorship for the new building and worked alongside Steve Peatling, Jeff Newton and myself to (help) deliver the new Surf Beach Complex.

MEANTIME Mr Paterson who became an Ocean Grove SLSC life member in 2015, returns as club president for a second time after his first stint for four years in 2012.
"I have had the pleasure of being a member since 1978 and have seen enormous growth in the club and the town since then," he said. "I was also extremely proud to be presented life membership in 2015, joining the other twenty life members presented over the clubs seventy odd year history."

Vinnies is planning to have the shop open seven days a week from September onwards. Shopping at Vinnies is not just about grabbing a bargain as all money raised goes back directly to benefit the needy in Ocean Grove and surrounding suburbs. Funds are used to support the local volunteer team who visit people in their homes offering practical help such as food hampers,
fuel vouchers, help with bills and rent, as well as offering a listening ear. The funds also support a holiday house in Point Lonsdale offering respite care. According to the St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria the need in the Ocean Grove /Queenscliff area has been increasing in recent years and is now up by 18 per cent. This includes a 46% rise in the number of cases where material aid was given and an incredible 116% rise in the need for food.
Every building we design begins with a relationship based on understanding, cooperation, suggestion and creation. It is a process that encourages individual expression in the building of something lasting and valued.

Ocean Grove's favourite shopping destination has had a facelift and locals are loving the new look. Vinnies in Marine Parade has been a wellkept secret for locals wanting to upcycle, recycle and bargain hunt, while giving back to their local community. Now the shop has undergone a major refurbishment and happy shoppers are delighted. Manager Jen Sjodin, who has been in charge of the shop for nearly nine years, said the new look did not mean any change to prices and the great customer care on offer in the shop by her merry band of volunteers. "We keep saying to people the place might look different but it is the still the same great value prices, as well as the great atmosphere that we have worked hard to achieve," Jen said. "We know our customers love coming here because it is a fun place and it is my wonderful team of volunteers that give this place its terrific atmosphere." Vinnies first opened in Ocean Grove in 1987 in Madeley Street and moved up to its current location in the industrial estate in 2002. Refurbishment of the shop was completed within a week mainly because of the hard work of a team of volunteers. The shop is staffed by 85 volunteers but manager Jen said the shop was always looking for extra hands on deck. "The more the merrier in this place," she said. "People get worried about making a big time commitment for us but even if they can offer a few hours on one day that can be a great help to us. "We love our community and the support we get from locals but we would just to remind people that we can no longer accept furniture donations and we would also ask if people could just check that all donations are in working condition, or are of a high enough standard

Elaine Janes loves her chickens and treats them like family. One of them, Flapper, has developed a cult following across the region and when French celebrity chef and author Gabriel Gate saw her at Point Lonsdale beach, he had to find out more. Gate is currently in France for his television role in the Tour de France. "He was amazed that Flapper was so calm and enjoying the beach," Elaine said. "Gabriel has a house in Point Lonsdale and he asked me if I could get a photo with the chooks on a bike." Elaine has since met Gate many times and sends him regular pics of the chickens, which he always replies to by email. Elaine had trouble searching for a bicycle so the birds could pose for a picture and that's where Hendry Cycles in Ocean Grove stepped in. The birds were happy to sit on a bike for ages at the shop and enthralled everybody. "They sat and watched the Tour de France for an hour at home," Elaine said. "They were not bothered in the slightest."

New committee sworn in By Mark Heenan Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club held its first annual general meeting at its brand new stateof-the-art clubhouse on Sunday 21 July. Club life member Chris Paterson was installed as president replacing the outgoing David Pavia. The new OGSLSC Management Committee for 2019/2020 saw the introduction of two new vice presidents to cater for the growth of the new Ocean Grove Surf Beach Complex. Former club secretary Lyndie Freestone was appointed vice president of club operations and community, while Scott McNaughton becomes vice president of strategy and commercial operations. Mr Paterson said the two new vice president roles would vary and have different levels of expertise. "The two vice-president roles are aligned with the growth in commercial activity anticipated for the new complex," he told the Voice. "Lyndie as vice president club operations and community will help oversee the areas of patrols, junior and senior competition, member well-being and training, whilst Scott as vice president strategy and commercial will oversee sponsorship and fundraising, facilities and sales and events. "All these areas each have their own manager as well and the vice presidents will assist the president in driving overall strategy and vision for the club." Mr Paterson said OGSLSC's expanding membership base through the popularity of their Junior Nipper program, its new clubhouse and the upcoming opening of the Dunes restaurant in August meant the club would have to cater for the growing surf patrol needs and an increased demand for hospitality services. Ocean Grove SLSC increased its member-
A new Ocean Grove SLSC Management Committee was sworn in at the club's AGM. ship base to 957 members in 2018/19, which 368 members were junior activity members according to its 2019 annual report. OGSLSC membership levels had experienced significant growth for the last three years despite no access to a clubhouse last season with its surf club building redevelopment. In 2017/18 the club had 932 members up from 867 members in 2016/17. "The next few seasons will no doubt see us expand our membership base along with our patrol operations and also our hospitality services for members," he said. "We also look forward to working with the Dunes Restaurant to provide significant conference, event and hospitality services to the community and the area. "It will be important to us to deliver these services, but also cater for our members. "We are expecting significant membership
growth over the next few seasons and very much looking forward to a lot of this coming from the junior activities sector of the club, through surf education (Nippers) and surf sport." IN other OGSLSC Management Committee developments, Simone White was appointed club secretary, Jeff Ames stays on as treasurer, Sean Conquit joins as the new club captain, while Isabel Greer arrives in a new role in an education and training position. Bruce Honey, Darren Ball, Ros Williamson and Steve Peatling were all re-elected in their roles from last season, while the sales and event manager role remains vacant. MEANTIME the 40th Rip to River Classic run will take place on Saturday 28 December, 2019, while the club intends to run its Ocean Swim fundraiser event across the Australia Day weekend on Saturday 25 January, 2020.

Could Jesse be a Viva Club Legend? By Justin Flynn Ocean Grove Football/Netball Club is lucky to have Jesse Sutton involved. Jesse takes on way more than most 21-yearolds do, but she wouldn't have it any other way. Jesse has been nominated for the prestigious Viva Energy Club Legend Award. Despite being an active player for the netball club, Jesse coaches the Under 19s, heads up the social committee, sits on the netball subcommittee and club executive, and also organises training singlets, netball trips, rosters, helps out in the bar and canteen, mentors junior players and coaches and more. "The club has so many wonderful people involved whether that is players, coaches, game day volunteers or committee as well as supportive families and friends which makes me feel well supported in anything that I put my hand up for," Jesse said. Jesse's nominator said she has an ability to communicate with all ages and personalities. "I am in my third year of studying teaching so working with kids comes naturally as I love it," Jesse said. Whether playing or coaching, Jesse said she is happy to be helping out. "I love the competitive side of playing and fitness that with it all, but also love developing the girls I coach in their netball, in both their skills as well as their leadership," Jesse said. Jesse's work on the social committee is also time consuming, but enjoyable, she said. "The organising of the social events for the club is the main aspect of being involved with the social committee and making sure that the
Horror thriller Weaving three theatrical styles into one, physical theatre ensemble Company13 will bring the fruits of their labour to the Potato Shed Friday 16 August with The Hunter. The Hunted. Melding gothic melodrama, the Dadaist absurdity of a troupe of clowns and the confessional realism of personal stories, Company13 has created a work that examines the ways that desire, love and infatuation create havoc with our rational sense of who we are, or, in other words, don't let your head get in the way of your heart. A horror thriller, The Hunter. The Hunted is Frankenstein meets Downton Abbey, full of passion, drama, and tragedy, with a fair dose of idiocy to create a unique and engaging work. "The central story in this work is really about the battle between the rational and the intuitive, played out in a love triangle," director James Pratt says. "Perfect fodder for a Gothic melodrama. I really enjoy mixing lots of play and fun with big dramatic stuff, and this show has all that." Ocean Grove and Bannockburn junior football clubs were among more than 100 football and netball teams to raise awareness for mental health in July. Players from the Under 15 Female Division Two clash between the Grubbers and Bannockburn Arklay, held at Ocean Grove Memorial Recreation Reserve on Sunday 20 July, came together as part of Read The Play program which addresses the health and wellbeing of young people. The match was played with a specially designed white colour Sherrin football to mark Read The Play, presented by Geelong-based company Kempe Engineering. Leaders from both junior teams gathered for a photo only moments before match. Ocean Grove Football Netball Club junior girls football coordinator Jade Campbell said its junior coaches sat down with players to discuss the importance of mental health within young people. "Our coaches had a chat with the girls about looking out for each other," Campbell said. "I (also) had a word with them to say myself and other officials in the club are always there if the girls need to chat with someone. "Read The Play raises awareness to mental health in our young people. "This might be a good chance to sit our children down and just have a chat with them to see where they are at in life." Ocean Grove won the game 58 to 15 in a clincal display of football. See page 24 for the full report and more pictures.

The Hive Gallery turned three this month and building on its strong stable of local artists, is introducing a number of guests from further afield within the gallery space. Opening on Saturday 3 August, renowned ceramicist and painter Wendy Jagger, from Mansfield, brings the Blue Mountains in NSW to the Bellarine. Following a recent artist residency at BigCi, surrounded by the landscapes of Wollemi and the Gardens of Stone National Park, Wendy has developed a body of work inspired by "seeing the forms, colours and textures of nature and reacting to its ever-changing weather, light and moods". The grateful recipient of a Regional Arts Victoria grant, Wendy returned to her studio to further develop the paintings and also produce
her impressive porcelain vessels on which the paintings form a signature backdrop. Wendy's porcelain has previously received International acclaim with an honourable mention as a finalist in Mino, Japan, for the 9th International Ceramics Festival. Locally, she has produced work for the foyer of Geelong Gallery and the NGV shop in Melbourne. "I'm delighted to introduce another new, but well-established artist to the Bellarine Peninsula for locals to experience her high calibre work on both porcelain and canvas," Hive curator Karen Spreadborough said. All are welcome to the opening on August 3 from 2pm to 4pm to hear Wendy talk. The exhibition runs 1 August 2 to 1 September 1 at The Hive Gallery, 41 Smithton Grove, Ocean Grove.

Bellarine Community Health's HealthCare Bus is ready for action.
Health bus gets facelift Communities on the Bellarine are set to get their first look at Bellarine Community Health's colourful new HealthCare Bus. The final touches to exterior detail have been completed and the HealthCare Bus will be available to walk through as part of BCH promotions for Dental Health Week in August. The internal layout of the bus has undergone extensive conversion to transform it into a multipurpose vehicle that will deliver a range of primary health services across the Bellarine. "The new livery on the bus looks fantastic," said BCH CEO Shane Dawson. "It will really stand out as it makes its way delivering services to communities around the Bellarine." The HealthCare Bus is an initiative from Bellarine Community Health that deliver a range primary health care services across the
Bellarine but will allow clients to access services via telehealth. The HealthCare Bus will be used to promote increased awareness of critical primary health care services, visit local community events and support community campaigns such as Dental Health Week. Funding the BCH HealthCare Bus has been a collaboration between BCH, local businesses and community groups and general community support. The BCH HealthCare Bus will be open to walk through from 10am to noon on Tuesday 6 August at Bellarine Community Health's Point Lonsdale site on Nelson Road. You can also take a tour of Bellarine Community Health's Dental facilities and meet the BCH Dental team at the Point Lonsdale site from 10am to 2pm as part of Dental Health Week.

Barwon Heads Fine Music Society has proudly announced the orchestra will perform the timeless classic Peter and the Wolf in the seaside town for a weekend of concerts. Thanks to generous grants from the City of Greater Geelong and the Barwon Heads branch of the Bendigo Bank, the weekend will commence with a concert exclusively for Barwon Heads Primary School Students to be held at 2pm on Friday 23 August in the gymnasium. This concert is free of charge for the students and families of BHPS students are wel-
come to attend for a gold coin donation. There will be two further performances at the Barwon Heads Community Hall at 7pm on Friday 23 August and at 2.30pm Saturday 24 August. Ticket prices at these two concerts will be $20 for BHFMS members, $25 for non-members and $10 for children. Families (two adults and two children) receive a special group price of $40. Urgent action required Two 'lakes' slated for demolition at a Wallington aged home residence look set to be gone as early as next month. A group of concerned locals believe the lakes, at TLC Aged Care, are home to numerous species of fauna are doomed unless urgent action is taken. "We are deeply concerned about Leaper Corporation Pty Ltd who operate TLC Aged Care facility in Homestead Avenue, Wallington and their plans to land fill two existing lakes to create 21 car parking spaces," the group said in a statement. It is understood works to demolish the lakes are to commence in several weeks. "We believe both lakes have been present on the property for over 20 years, having become habitat and home for unique, endangered and protected wildlife," the statement said. "The proposed land fill will have the effect of destroying habitat for water birds that nest and live on the lakes and suffocate other wildlife including species of frogs including the endangered growling grass frog, and long-necked turtles." The statement said there are 24 species of oceangrovevoice.com.au
birds, water birds and native birds which use the lake. "Most importantly, of the birds relying on these lakes, the freckled ducks are endangered in Victoria and little egrets are critically endangered. Grey teal and hardheads, Eurasian coots and little pied cormorants are on the list of endangered," it said. "Not only will the destruction of the lakes cause irreparable loss of habitat for wildlife and destroy some species but the proposed lakes destruction shall have significant emotional impact upon many of the residents of TLC Aged Care who gain considerable comfort and pleasure from the presence of the lakes water birds and wildlife that reside in and on the lakes. "Our solicitors Ocean Legal have today written to the Directors to the Leaper Corporation Pty Ltd in a last ditch attempt to enter into mediation to encourage and alternative plan for an alternative space for the creation of a measly 21 car parking spaces and to save the habitat and endangered and rare species of Australian wildlife." TLC has so far not commented on the issue.

Landmark building By Cr Stephanie Asher As a passionate club member, it's fabulous to see the new Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club facilities open for limited operations. What a landmark building for our beautiful foreshore. The new digs replace a building that was no longer meeting the needs of the club's 1000 members. Remembering that this volunteer organisation is charged with keeping us all safe in the water and educated about beach safety, it is only appropriate that the facility is fit for purpose. The project was funded by the state and federal governments, as well as the City of Greater Geelong.
We were proud to contribute $150,000 towards the patrol tower, which started operating in earnest last summer. The Ocean Grove Town Centre Urban Design Framework (UDF) has been implemented into the planning scheme and is guiding planning decisions around new developments. Work continues with Regional Roads Victoria on the squaring up and signalisation of the Hodgson Street and The Parade intersection, to improve pedestrian safety. One of the other strong community preferences nominated during the development of the UDF was traffic lights at the Orton Street and Presidents Avenue intersection. It's great to see Regional Roads Victoria committing to installing traffic lights, with works to begin after summer.
Across the river, the planning minister has approved the Barwon Heads Structure Plan, following a thorough community consultation process. Following more than 1000 submissions from community members, the approval means the town's western boundary is unchanged. There is also increased protection for Coastal Moonah Woodland vegetation in Warrenbeen Court. The outcome with the moonahs is a great example of a well-informed community member making contact with councillors and working with the team of officers. These special trees are now better protected for future generations. Keep up the great work and stay in touch.

THE VOICE GUIDE TO ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT
A festival for the senses Apollo Bay's boundary pushing arts, feast and music festival, WinterWild returns this August with the theme Visions and Ecstasies. It will explore the fringe states of body and mind that result in the ecstatic and the blissful. WinterWild is known for its nocturnal program of extravagant fireside performances, epic feasts and music, but 2019 presents a full daytime workshop program. Drumming, meditation, ice bathing, mind and body workshops and discussion panels on sacred plant medicines are all among this year's offerings. The WinterWild evening program kicks off as darkness descends with the festival's flagship event, DogWatch, a free public performance between 6pm and 8pm featuring evening street parades, performances and beach bonfires. This year Part 1: Immolation will be held on Saturday 17 August, followed by Part 2 Resurrection on Saturday 30 August. Festival goers can immerse themselves in psychedelic rock at the local Mechanics Institute, gorge themselves at Feastiality, groove in darkness at a seaside dance party or drop into gigs at one of the town's two pubs. Music performances include Otologic, Salvador Darling, Seagull, MANTRA, DJ Kiti, Flyying Colours, The Fillmore Brothers, Los Borrachos (Canada) and an Apollo Bay debut performance by baroque musician, Max Riebl in Alchemy. Cats no match for Hawks There's been some glorious, still, clear winter days over the past few weeks, which have been very conducive to being out and about. On one of those days I unfortunately decided to venture to the MCG to witness the 'mighty Cats' take on those yellow and brown Hawks. I know I should have picked a majestic bird team to support instead of a feline variety, and I ponder this every time I witness the Hawks demolishing the felines. I went to the farm in Wallington to perform my winter bird survey. The first day I went it was very windy and not a great day for bird watching. I still saw a flock of 11 white-faced herons on the wetlands, as well as black-winged stilts and a wedge-tailed eagle. When I went back on a still, cold morning the only raptor I saw was a brown falcon, but I did see a small flock of striated pardalotes, three golden whistlers, 10 flame robins, and a flock of yellow-rumped thornbills, as well as 17 black-winged stilts. On the farm there were many eastern rosellas, red-rumped parrots and rainbow lorikeets, and I've also had these birds in my Ocean Grove backyard over the past few weeks. I'm really happy that a red-rumped parrot pair have been visiting their nesting box that they have used to raise some young over the past few years, and look like they will be using it again over the next few months.

Little eagle, Curlewis.
I've been spotting many small birds over the past few weeks, such a male superb-fairy wrens in breeding plumage, a few eastern spinebills and a lovely pair of Australasian pipits that were on a farm fence in Connewarre. I've also seen a very majestic little eagle at Curlewis as well as black kites and whistling
Kevin said the bird's long beak doesn't look the same in the front end photo, and in the first photo the line across the branch, more or less, aligns with the beak. Kevin and his wife Anne-Maree also went to Inverleigh for lunch one day and he took a lovely photo of a white-plumed honeyeater in a flowering gum tree.

Landscaping works at the new Surf Beach Complex Our Coastal Operations Team have been working over the past month on landscape works surrounding the new Surf Beach Complex at Ocean Grove Main Beach. This has involved plantings of local native species including Correas, Coast Tussock Grass, Running Postman and Dianellas. We have also been busy building a large double-side bike rack, retaining walls, fences and pathways. These works will continue throughout the next few weeks. The new ‘The Dunes’ café is set to open in August.
Natural winter wonders on the Barwon Coast
Thanks to the highly valuable community feedback we received on our draft playground concepts we now have a wealth of information and ideas to provide to the landscape architect contracted to design a playground for Ocean Grove Main Beach. We look forward to sharing the final design with you towards the end of 2019 and anticipate the new play space will be built in early 2020 after the busy summer period. The cooler months mean less human visitors to the coastline, but nature certainly doesn’t slow down. Our Coastal Operations Team have noted Hooded Plovers at 13th Beach flocking in groups up to 14. Southern Right Whales have been migrating along our coastline and Humpback Whales have been seen further out to sea. The significant amount of rain we have had will assist in the recovery of sand dune resilience and has also triggered orchids to emerge such as the Large Gnat Orchid and Pink Fairies.

Wells heading to the USA Brock Wells has played his last game for Bears before heading to the USA this week to advance his baseball aspirations. Wells has secured a two-year scholarship at Central Arizona College. CAC recently won the NJCAA world series of baseball in June with a team that included another Geelong local, Liam Spence. Wells hopes to secure a further two-year scholarship and then go through to the minor league system. The club will miss his abilities but wish him the very best in the US. A Grade played against Lara edging ahead 4-2 after the top of the third inning, but the Wildcats replied with 12 runs to put the game out of reach for the Bears, going down 17-4. A Reserve hit up a storm to put the Wildcats away 17-0. Chris Hockey working his way back from injury had five hits from five at bats in a 16-hit game for the Bears with Sam Lazarus chipping
in with two hits, both in the final inning. Pat Brackley threw a complete game with seven strikeouts and conceding just four hits and was backed by the division's most miserly defence. B-Reserve crushed Saints Black 14-2 with another outstanding hitting display. Bears scored four in the first and 10 in the third. Ethan Weekley with four hits and Andy Riddett with a home run in the first inning. C Grade Blue was up against Saints at the annual Go Pink for Cancer Day. It's a great initiative and the Bears had a great day, but ended up on the receiving end of a 15-2 loss. C Grade Red played Sunday at Wallington against Lara. Some solid hitting by Bears wasn't enough to overcome a consistent Lara that scored consistently through the early innings eventually going down 14-6.

Ocean Grove’s Under 19s a shining light this season Ocean Grove's elite junior football depth continues to shine in 2019. The Grubbers' Under 19s team won their 10th consecutive match and accounted for St Mary's by 62 points in their Division Two clash. Final scores Ocean Grove 10.12 (72) defeated St Mary's 1.4 (10). The Grubbers sat in top spot thanks to their 12-1 win loss record after 13 games, which included eight rounds and five grading matches. Ocean Grove which bridged a three-game gap plus percentage over second-placed Lara, had not lost since going down to Leopold by 46 points in their Round 3 grading game at Leopold on 27 April. Tom Richardson, Max Sutton and Josh Lange featured in the win and have all tasted senior footy in 2019, while eligible Under 19s players Ben Bennett and Josh Lange played in the senior game against Modewarre on 20 July. Richardson, who has played with the Geelong Falcons in 2019, was only playing in his third Under 19s game with the Grubbers this
year and was a standout with five goals. Ocean Grove jumped out of the blocks with a four-goal first term and kept St Mary's scoreless at quarter time. The home side led the visitors by 33 points at half time in fine and windy conditions. After half time the Grubbers booted four majors to put the finishing touches on the win. Jake Hargreaves finished with two goals for the Grubbers. MEANWHILE on Saturday, Richardson kicked 10 goals in Ocean Grove's whopping 73-point win over St Joseph's 2. It was Richardson's best return in front of goal since he snared 10 majors and was named best on ground in the Grubbers Under 17s Division 2 premiership victory over Lara last year. Richardson also had a day out in the Round 9 senior clash this season where he booted nine goals against Portarlington on 25 May. Final scores Ocean Grove 16.10 (106) defeated St Joseph's 3.5 (23). Modda proves too strong By Mark Heenan Reigning Bellarine Football Netball League A Grade premiers Modewarre upstaged higher ranked Ocean Grove in their BFNL Round 14 clash at Shell Road Netball Courts on 20 July. The tall Warriors outfit won 45 to 39 against Ocean Grove. It was the Grubbers first loss since they went down to ladder leaders Torquay 46-51 in Round 8 Both Modda and Ocean Grove were battling it out for a prized top three double position for the upcoming BFNL finals which commence on Saturday 24 August. Modewarre's (10-4) six-goal victory meant it had closed the gap on Ocean Grove (11-3) in third spot. "Finishing top three is very important," Ocean Grove senior netball coach Elyse Howard said. "We feel like we deserve to finish top three so we need to put in the hard yards to make it happen.". The Grubbers were missing two key stars including goal attack Julia Allan, while new recruit Lillian O'Sullivan did not play. Grubber defenders Lucy Vercher and Jess Griffin, both named in the best players, were outstanding with both triggering steals and creating turnovers. Experienced Grubber veteran Candice Parker provided depth and stability in defence. "Our defenders played really well in the ring," Howard said. Grubber gun goal shooter Rebecca Scott scored 22 goals from her 26 attempts, while Ally Swift shot 17 goals from 28 attempts. Modda's intense and gritty defence ensured it was a tough day in front of goal for Scott, on occasions Scott was faced with the opposition double teaming her. "If they double team her then we need(ed) to ensure our goal attack is taking the shots and we probably didn't hit the percentages required," Howard said. "We need to work on different variations in the circle if they plan on doing that if we meet them in finals." Howard praised Modda's all court game and said their taller match ups suited them. "Just wasn't our day," she said. "They are just big all over the court and have depth." Ocean Grove led by one goal at quarter time and half time before the visitors consolidated their slender lead in the final half to claim the win. B GRADE Sisters Emma and Abbey Badrock helped Ocean Grove secure a 43-32 victory over Modewarre in B Grade. Emma Badrock shot 26 goals, while Abbey Badrock scored 17 goals. Injuries sour heavy loss By Mark Heenan Ocean Grove suffered its second biggest defeat of 2019 on Saturday and the 15-goal loss to Torquay was compounded with key injuries to two experienced players. Ocean Grove was outplayed by an in-form Torquay at McCartney Oval at Spring Creek Reserve. Final scores Torquay 17.19 (121) defeated Ocean Grove 3.10 (28) on 27 July. The Grubbers have now dipped to ninth spot on the ladder while the resurgent Tigers charged into the top five. Ocean Grove senior co-captain Justin Carey sustained a dislocated compound fracture to his left finger and was rushed from the ground in the early stages of the third quarter. Carey, who suffered tendon damage, remains in doubt for the Grubbers three remaining games. Moments later Grubber swingman Peter Hardy hobbled to interchange bench with a groin injury and took no further part in game. Injuries restricted the youthful Ocean Grove
team rotations after half time, youngster Ryan Symonds went down with a corked thigh. "We weren't playing that well at that stage anyway, but it did restrict us from getting back into the game having one on the bench in the last half," Ocean Grove interim coach David King said. "That is footy though - we still played out the best we can and we know where we are at. "They (the players) genuinely cared and they were upset after the game and didn't get closer." Torquay senior playing coach Dom Glesson said he was wary of thee Grubbers before the game despite their season only yielding three victories for 2019. "It is a bit of a wounded dog type scenario - you are a little bit worried about them you don't know how they are going to react," Glesson told the Voice. "Always against Ocean Grove we have some good battles. "I know they are up against it, but I think they have got the right people in the right seats, I think they lost their way a bit late, the
deficit looks a bit worse than what it should have been." The Tigers won the ball and triggered turnovers from the Grubbers in the opening stages of first quarter. Ocean Grove hit back half-way through the first term and slowed the play down to end quarter and trailed by 13 points at quarter time. Torquay gun onballer Ben Raidme was instrumental in the first half setting up vital plays, which resulted in goals for the home side, while Tiger team-mates Jonathan Hobbs and Paul Burchell were named in the Tigers' best. "We've got some smart heads with Jonny Hobbs and even Paul Burchell who played GFL footy, Ben (Raidme) had a great game - I think there was couple of others down back that (helped) got our focus back," Glesson said. "They (Ocean Grove) really fought hard for a good quarter." Tiger forward Jack Heathcote finished with six goals while Callum Currie booted three. Grubber defender Kaiden Long was named
in his side's best, while gun midfielder Luke Cartelli returned from injury and played his first match since Round 10. Jake Ward, Kaiden Long and youngster Fletcher Long all booted one goal Long kicked a sensational snap on goal from the boundary line prior to the threequarter time siren. OCEAN Grove will face the winless Portarlington in its final home game of the season this Saturday. RESERVES OCEAN Grove dropped outside the top five for the first time since Round 2 after a 48-point loss to Torquay in its reserves clash. Final scores Torquay 12.10 (82) defeated Ocean Grove 5.4 (34). The eight-goal margin was the Grubbers' biggest defeat in 2019 and their fifth loss from the past six matches. Torquay kept the Grubbers scoreless in the second term and led by 44 points at the main break. Grubber playing coach Cheyne Kelly was the only multiple goalkicker for his team with two goals.
Young squad competitive against BFL reigning premiers By Mark Heenan Modewarre flexed its BFL finals credentials to defeat a youthful Ocean Grove by 49 points at Ray Menzies Memorial Oval in their Round 14 clash on 20 July. Final scores Modewarre 15.15 (105) to Ocean Grove 9.2 (56). Last year's BFL premiers, Modewarre, kicked with the aid of a three-to-four goal breeze at the southern end in the first term and led by 22 points at quarter time against a goalless Grubbers. The home side fought back after quarter time and reduced the deficit back to 11 points at the main break thanks to a wind assisted four-goal second term performance. Ocean Grove senior interim coach David King said the inexperienced Grubbers faced an arduous task taking on a two-metre tall John Meesen, Warriors co-coach, who gave his star on-ballers first use of ball. King confirmed young Grubber makeshift ruck Tom Hobbs, who gave away several inches in height to Meesen, competed well against his highly fancied opponent. "Meesen, he was the dominant player on the ground and dominant ruckman, he gave them first use of the footy," King told the Voice. "I thought Tommy Hobbs was fantastic all day to compete - he played his role. "The thing about Meesen is actually good at his feet - he can actually tap it to players (Josh) Finch and Cody Grant and (Matty) McKim. "If they (Modewarre on-ballers) don't get it he (Meesen) seems to follow up which is a credit to him, he is a big man and he can actually follow his own work like an onballer." Modewarre dominated third term and kept Ocean Grove scoreless with ball winners Oliver Butler, Matty McKim the star players. The visitors led by a whopping 59 points at the final break and had 24 inside 50s compared with the Grubbers six entries in the third term albeit Modda kicked with wind advantage. The home side reduced the deficit in the fourth term and booted five goals. Modewarre trio Jake Kilmartin, Thomas Worpel and Lindsay Phillips all snared three goals. For the Grubbers, power forward Jake Ward booted four goals and increased his tally to 24 in 2019. Peter Hardy finished with two goals for Ocean Grove. MEANTIME Grubber veteran Kelly Williams played his first senior game since Round 18 last year. Williams, a senior best-and-fairest winner at Ocean Grove, was named in the Grubbers' best players. "I put it on him on Monday and said if you are right you will play and he has played (five games in the reserves) and he is a class A and he is a 150 plus game player," King said. Top three hopes still alive Ocean Grove A Grade netball team still remains in the hunt for a prized top three double chance despite a second consecutive loss. The Grubbers were relegated to fourth position after they went down 36 to 52 to BFNL hot favourites Torquay at Spring Creek Reserve on Saturday 27 July. Modewarre, which defeated Ocean Grove 45-39 on 20 July, overtook the Grubbers on a superior percentage and moved into third spot after a big 60 to 24 win over the eighth-placed Drysdale. Modewarre and Ocean Grove have an 11-4 record after 15 rounds, while ladder leader Torquay (13-1-1) is half a game ahead of secondplaced Geelong Amateur (13-2). Grubber senior netball playing coach Elyse Howard said there were a few opportunities to lock in a top three berth and avoid an elimination final showdown with rivals Barwon Heads. In their final three home and away matches for 2019 the Grubbers meet Portarlington (home), Barwon Heads (away) and Queenscliff (away). "We have chances left for top three, but I want to secure it now for peace of mind," Howard said.
