MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk There's always a festival in Noosa. It's a comment often heard and at this time of year, close to accurate. Noosa Alive finished last Sunday and by all accounts was an outstanding success. King of the Mountain festival drew large crowds to Pomona for an array of activities last weekend with the mountain race the major attraction. Now preparations are on tract for the very popular Noosa Jazz Party set to begin later this month. Also coming up is the annual art event, Open Studios. If you decide to forego the entertainment on land and take to the water to enjoy this glorious winter weather be sure to pack your safety gear and keep an eye on the kids on the beach. Four men were very lucky to survive this week after their boat capsized crossing the bar, none with lifejackets. - Margaret Maccoll ●

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…

RESCUES AFTER BOATS FLIPPED BY RON LANE Four men including one in his seventies can count themselves lucky after their boat overturned crossing the Noosa Bar at 6am Saturday morning and they were rescued by members of surf life savings Emergency Rescue Group (ERG). Responding immediately to a call out that a small craft had overturned an IRB crew of Joe Cirillo and Ian Widdicombe, plus Wave Runner Jet Rescue Ski Driver David James, were launched from the Noosa Surf Club. Proceeding into the Bar the craft was found overturned and the IRB crewman Ian Widdicombe immediately entered the water, searching the upturned vessel which was found to be empty. The crewman returned to the

Ian Widdicombe, Adam McKane and Joe Cirillo. IRB then proceeded out sea, where supported by the Wave Runner they commenced a search pattern. During the search a tinny was sighted. People in the tinny had spotted the missing people in the water and dragged them on to their boat. They were cold and in shock. The IRB crew

immediately took them on board and they were transported back to the surf club where police and Queensland Ambulance Service personal put them through the mandatory breathalyzer and health check. "They were lucky," said a spokesperson, "none of them were

wearing lifejackets and the water was very cold." Immediately following this another rescue occurred again in the Noosa Bar. This time four people were in the water after an outrigger over turned; on this occasion the Wave Runner and the Lifeguard Adam McKane responded. "This one was a better situation as all four were wearing life jackets and had the sense to stay together," said a spokesman. "What do we have to do to make people understand?" asked IRB Driver Joe Cirillo. "When travelling through the Noosa Bar they must wear life jackets. The second rescue was easy as all four were wearing their jackets, but above that they had the sense to stay together. Remember life jackets are essential through bars and on long trips" ●

KATIE ROSE HOSPICE FUNDING TALKS Katie Rose Cottage Hospice (KRCH) Board has suspended its 24 hour service pending the outcome of funding discussions with State and Federal governments. Since opening nine months ago 30 people have been provided with end of life care at the hospice and support for their families and carers. "Those who have spent their last days with us ranged in age from 36 to 98. The service provided by our team is exceptional and truly honours the end of life," KRCH chairperson Carol Raye said. Ms Raye said in addition to providing the community with excellent care it estimates it has saved the government about $1million as its costs are about a third of those provided at public hospitals. In June this year and with the help of a $110,000 government grant KRCH gained 'Accredited' status which signifies its high quality care

Carol Raye at Katie Rose Cottage Hospice aligns with the expectations and requirements established by the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards. But to continue its service which includes employing round the clock registered nurses in addition to the involvement of community and business members KRCH requires the same long term funding which is given to Queensland's other six hospices and outreach services. Noosa MP Sandy Bolton said at Estimates Hearing this week she

had asked Health Minister Stephen Miles for a commitment for partner funding from the $17m allocated in the budget for palliative services. "I am in the process of securing a meeting between the Department of Health, KRCH and myself to look at what will be made available and how this can be accessed to ensure our residents are not denied their choice of services such as Katie Rose Cottage Hospice," she said. Ms Raye said their Op Shops would continue to operate as normal, fundraising and events would continue and the day hospice would remain open with staff, gardeners and maintenance continuing." "We will continue to work hard to attract enduring funding supported by our community and our local Independent Member of Parliament, Sandy Bolton, and are very confident of a successful outcome in the near future" she said. ●

WHALE DANCERS The whales that pass by our beaches on their annual migration are a joy to watch but on Monday two individuals surprised onlookers with a synchronised display at Sunshine Beach. William Neaves managed to capture the perfectly time dancers. ●

COVER STORY

HOW PATSY JAZZED UP NOOSA BY JIM FAGAN azz is king, jazz is the thing the folks dig the most." U.S, crooner Bing Crosby sang the line and Melbourne teenager Patsy Stevens danced to the hit from the 1950's movie "High Society." Sixty years on she is still "digging" jazz in all its traditional styles and doing what she does best, inviting Noosa to share her joy. She is organising, along with husband, Richard, the 27th annual 10-day Noosa Jazz Party next month and, when Noosa Today called at her Sunshine Beach home, she was putting tickets in envelopes to send to fans in Australia and NZ. "They're selling well," she says, "especially the four-nighters. People are taking advantage of the early bird prices and buying the whole package. "Every year I say this is going to be the best one and, overall, I think this one will be. We're flying

Simon Stribling from Canada and Mark Elton from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Simon plays trumpet and Mark Elton bass and they were members of the Melbourne Fireworks band which was known world-wide in the 90's. "They broke up leaving jazz fans wondering if they would ever play together again. "Well, the original band members are coming to Noosa for a once-only appearance at the Jazz Party." Melbourne was the jazz capital of Australia in the 50's and 60's when Patsy's love affair with the music began. She danced five times a week to bands led by legends like Graeme Bell, Frank Johnson and Bob and Len Barnard and married trombonist Mal Wilkinson who played in the Barnard band.. Patsy recalls: "We went our separate ways and I met Richard through our love of jazz. "Noosa was a favourite holiday place for us and in 1985 we came to stay, setting up a real estate business

in Sunshine Beach. "Richard wanted to play jazz, as well as just being a fan, and Frank Johnson, who was then living in Noosa, said he had a tuba he could have.

"It had started life as silver but was now black with neglect and just a decoration beside Frank's fireplace but with the help of another local jazzman, Ken Evans, he learnt to play it. noosatoday.com.au

"He formed his own band, The Jazz Factory and they've been playing ever since. I went with them when they toured Europe in 2008. We played in Germany, Holland, England and France and it was a huge success and so much fun." Patsy credits Frank Johnson with the idea of holding Noosa's first jazz party. "It was 1992 and he got Richard interested. I remember both of them walking up and down Hastings Street asking the accommodation houses when was the worst time of the year for business. "They were told the week before the Victoria and New South Wales school holidays at the end of August as accommodation starts to get expensive after that so we picked that month for the first jazz party to keep the costs down for the fans. "It's been held then ever since." Like everyone else involved in organising the Noosa Jazz Party, Patsy who is treasurer of Noosa Heads Jazz Club is a volunteer. It costs about $60,000 to stage and Richard admits it would be a lot more if it wasn't for the voluntary help. "We do everything, contracts, accommodation, promotion, tickets, even a shuttle bus from Noosaville and Hastings Street to the J Theatre "The focus of the Jazz Festival is on the more popular forms of music. The concept of putting the country's best musicians together in a "Jam Session" atmosphere is unique. We feel someone has to be there to keep genuine jazz in place so you can truly say that this is a jazz festival. "In fact, I would say the Noosa noosatoday.com.au

Jazz Party It's the only one of its kind in the country, if not the world" The involvement of community choir Noosa Chorale five years ago has added another dimension to the Jazz Party. "We used to be four days but the Chorale's two concerts with The Australian Jazz Ensemble and Melbourne jazz singer, Juliarna Clark, gives us a huge kick start and we now go for 10 days. "There's always "House Full" signs at The J when the two groups get together. This year they're doing songs from the musical "Cabaret" and its era of the 1920's and 30's." Patsy's enthusiasm for jazz shows no signs of abating. "Musicians are the most beautiful people and they have been my friends for many years. When they are here, it is always a party. We had 16 for lunch last year and I looked at those I had known when they were single and were now married. "They had kids and now their kids have kids. "It's so lovely having them to stay with us. They make themselves right at home. I woke up one morning and James Clark (bass player) was cleaning the pool, Steve Grant (piano) was weeding and Peter Gaudion (trumpet) was making coffee. "They're more than friends. They're family." Noosa Jazz Party, August 23-September 1. Noosa Chorale tickets www.thej.com.au or 5329 6560 All other ticket inquiries Noosa Heads Jazz Club. NEWS TOURISM SUPPORTS LAND REHABILITATION BY ABBEY CANNAN Noosa's event organisers have joined forces with Tourism Noosa, Noosa Council and Noosa and District Landcare to officially launch the Trees for Tourism Garden. At the launch, a cheque for $13,151 was presented to Phil Moran, General Manager of Noosa and District Landcare, with the funds going towards supporting tree planting for land rehabilitation,

carbon emission reduction and the protection and enhancement of koala habitat. Since the launch of Trees for Tourism initiative last November, around 16 events in Noosa have raised money for the cause, including the Noosa Triathlon and the Noosa Food and Wine Festival donating $1 from each ticket sale. Noosa District and Landcare Manager Phil Moran said that money raised will go towards

projects including the Noosa Trail Network Revegetation Project to revegetate areas of the trail to address issues including erosion and land slips, lack of shade for walkers, the need for greater riparian buffers and to improve habitat for wildlife. "This outstanding initiative shows that tourism and the environment are not mutually exclusive," Phil said. The location of the garden on Noosa Parade in the Nancy Cato

Park has been specifically chosen as competitors in the Noosa Triathlon and Runaway Noosa marathon run past the park. Tourism Noosa Environment and Sustainability Manager Juanita Bloomfield said, "Trees for Tourism was developed recognising the economic and social importance that events provide to the local community and our desire to find a way for events to give back environmentally." â—?

NOOSA ALIVE BUOYED BY CROWD BY MARGARET MACCOLL "Overall it was a success," a very pleased Noosa Alive president Andrew Squires said on Monday after the end of his first term at the helm of Noosa's premiere 10 day arts and entertainment festival. "We had sell out shows and we had great support from the local Council and businesses," said the former committee member who was voted in to take on the volunteer role previously held by Johanne Wright who retired last year.

With a staff made up almost entirely of volunteers and limited resources delivering a very large festival is a challenge, he said. The festival went through a number of changes this year although it's core aim to deliver an arts and culture program to Noosa remains the same. Andrew said the management team was restructured, producer Tim Loydell and an administration officer were employed and the program was reduced to a scale

more manageable for the committee. "Financially it was a good move. All indications are the festival was successful and there will be funds to continue for next year," he said. Andrew said a few items that were not so well supported had been dropped from the program, local entertainers engaged and in the future they were hoping to diversify a bit to better engage all ages in the community. He said many people asked what had happened to the popular beach

events which he hoped may be regained in some way next year. Andrew said founding patrons David and Kristen Williamson continue their support of the festival and this year their son Rory Williamson came on board as a sponsor while a number of other businesses had expressed interest. Anyone wanting to be involved in next years festival on the committee, as sponsors or volunteers can make contact through the website at www. noosaalive.com.au â—?

BUILDING UNDER THE DOME BY MARGARET MACCOLL A $200,000 dome roof has transformed the popular Noosa Tennis Club into an all-weather facility. Last Saturday the new addition was officially opened by club patrons Evonne Goolagong Cawley and husband Roger Cawley during the club's open day. Roger Cawley recalled when he and Evonne first came to live in Noosa and 23 years ago sat down with the Noosa Tennis Club committee to discuss moving the club from its location in the bowls club car park to its present site and its future design. He said they'd drawn ideas from some of the best clubs around the world and incorporated ideas such as the planting of trees and shrubs between the courts which had worked very successfully in Noosa.Evonne fondly recalled her 23 years relationship with the club and how a year after it began she and Roger established the Evonne Goolagong Foundation which each year sponsors about 1000 indigenous children to play tennis along with

maintaining their health and education. A member of the Wiradjuri people the former world number 1 tennis player grew up in the small country town of Barellan in NSW where her long hours spent hitting a tennis ball against a wall with a home-made racket was noticed and she was assisted to play tennis where her skill was soon realised. "I was very shy when I started school," she said. "I started playing tennis and it gave me the confidence to put my hand up and ask questions at school." The help she was given she passes on to others and through the program visits schools around the

country, telling the kids about the dream she realised. Evonne said she read a story in Princess magazine about a girl who was taken to Wimbledon to play tennis and won. "I used to pretend I was her," she said. "I used to dream about playing on that magical place." Evonne said she tells the children it was through reading that she found her dream and through reading and education that they could find their own dreams. "If you stay in school you will achieve your dreams," she tells them. Nominated through schools the children must remain in school in order to stay in the program. At

present the Foundation has about 17 participants attending university and two have completed medical studies and become doctors. Some of the students who began the program 22 years ago are now coaching others. "We're looking for kids who want to help themselves," she said. "We have nearly 100 per cent success rate of kids staying in school. We are very proud of it. "We really enjoy working with young people. We become like a big family. We all get to know each other really well."In addition to tennis the program provides mentoring support so kids always have someone to call on if they're going through hard times. At the open day Noosa Tennis Club president Peg Wallace acknowledged the State Government who provided $100,000 toward the project and the efforts of others including facilities manager David McMahon whose vision led to the construction of the roof, Phil Hunter who ensure the project was completed as well as sponsors including Tom Offermann, Tewantin RSL and Bendigo Bank. ●

100 RUN THE MOUNTAIN AS BAKER BOAZ COOKS BY MARGARET MACCOLL A training regime that involved running up and down the Glasshouse Mountains paid off for 25 year-old Mapleton baker Boaz Clark who won this year's King of the Mountain race in a time of 26 minutes 30 seconds against a field of 100 entrants. Last year was the first King of the Mountain race for the former elite mountain bike racer and he came in sixth place with a time of 29min30sec. This year he hoped to make it to the podium but didn't expect to win. At the half way at the top of the mountain Boaz said he was in second position behind Cooroy fitness instructor Ryan Crawford, 35, who he called "mountain man". He passed him shortly after and held first spot to the end winning with a comfortable lead although not claiming the record which stands at 22min 43sec. In second place this year was New Zealand architect Glen StricotTarboton who has run the event's sister race in NZ, the Kawerau King of the Mountain, 10 times and ran the Pomona race as a junior in 2013 and 2014. COULD YOU IMAGINE IT? THIS property at 10/179 Weyba Road, Noosaville is back on the market again, after a recent sale just fell over due to finance. With lowering of interest rates and Noosa fast becoming the flavour of the year as accommodation becoming scarcer as we head towards the holiday season, look at this value packed apartment if looking to relocate, downsize or just invest in a wonderful environment for you and your family. Who is going to be next to purchase this lovely apartment? What with two bathrooms, one large living area and huge wrap around north east facing deck, one could easily live here without too much stress on the legs or the groceries,

as the entrance to the home is only a matter of steps from ground level and the double tandum garage. Surrounded by palms, pools, cabanas, sauna and spa, this resort is hard to beat. Not only can you live here permanently, you can holiday let as well. This is actually the best value apartment in South Pacific today, as another sale of a two bedder just sold for $520,000. Behind the desk BY DAVID GARWOOD

House Fires and Smoke Alarms Every time we see on the Today show the latest house fire we probably ask ourselves “Is our home safe?”. In fact, we should not be waiting for the latest tragedy – act now! Legislation was passed as an amendment to the Fire and Emergency Services Act (QLD) 1990 and came into effect on January 1, 2017. Firstly, I will say that it is complicated, and if you would like we can supply you with the full legal requirements for your property – simply email or call me. However, in summary:Old smoke alarms worked on the ionisation principle, detecting changes in the air composition. However, they tend to be slow to react, especially with smouldering fires which generate smoke, usually the silent killer. The new smoke alarms work on the photo electric principle – far faster and more reliable. Do I need to change my existing ionisation smoke alarm? Legally no, unless it is 10 years old or more, or does not function correctly when tested. You can go to Bunnings and buy a compliant new photo-electric detector from the ludicrously low price of $29.95 with a 10 year life lithium battery! Why would you risk it? This simply screws to the ceiling and can be legally installed by yourself. Your next key date (if a private residence) is not until January 1 2027 when basically, your property must be protected to the level of a rental property or a property being sold (for which the key date is January 1 2022). So, the new requirement to come into effect on these key dates is that:1. All alarms must be photoelectric 2. Must be either hardwired or fitted with a 10 year lithium battery 3. Be interconnected, either by hard wire or wireless, so that if one goes off, they all go off. For rental or selling properties there are other criteria, and there are specific prescribed locations and numbers required, and hard-wired systems must be installed by a licenced electrician. So ask us for the fact sheet so that you can determine your specific needs. We are instigating for all our managements that the alarms are regularly and professionally maintained. Apart from the threat to life, can you imagine the possible legal consequences of noncompliance?? Talk again next week, David Garwood

IT WON’T LAST LONG!

STOP THE CHOP Two mature coconut trees missing from our Noosa beachfront, cut down in the last (week). What’s next? So a few coconuts fall and whack a few tourists on the head. You can replace the tourists but you cant replace the trees. Very upset. Stop sanitising our beachfront and put the river back where it belongs. Bobby Aitken, 55 years local, and partly responsible for planting some of the palm trees, back in the '60s

ACTIVIST ACTION I noticed one of Steve Hall's (Cooroy) more recent almost weekly contributions ended with the comment “Thank goodness for student activists and people like Bob Brown”. Bob Brown led his small band of like-minded activists up and down the eastern seaboard of Australia to northern Qld in vehicles largely manufactured and powered by fossil fuels to protest against fossil fuels. Their views were roundly booed twice by more than 90 per cent of Australians who don’t share them enough to vote for them, once in the towns they passed through and again at the ballot box.

After his return home he had a Eureka moment sparked when he learned there were plans to build these enormous, loud and ugly windmills near where he lives. These useless eyesores produce insufficient, unreliable, intermittent power and when there is no wind they produce zero. In a style most eco warriors adopt when they are affected by the reality of their own madcap ideas, Bob said ‘Not in my back yard, these things are an eyesore and produce very little power and they kill millions of birds’ (which the original greens of old would have rightly objected to). Perhaps now that Bob questioned then discovered the error of his ways he can travel to Noosa to share his newfound enlightenment with the hapless, virtue-signalling Noosa Council who voted unanimously to join the latest ludicrous ‘climate emergency’ hoax. Maybe the thought of these underperforming eyesores blighting their own views of the Sunshine Coast from Peregian Beach to the Noosa Northshore should encourage them instead to literally see the light. No wonder PM Scott Morrison and the Australian public who voted him in are smiling and rubbing their hands together saying “Thank good12422414-SN29-19

I want to congratulate Bob Brown, Australia’s most renowned ecowarrior for raising concerns about the proposed wind farm in the Tasmanian wilderness and the revelation of the high impact on bird life. I have now read a number of reports from respected environmentalists, providing alarming evidence of the huge impact on birds (particularly raptors) and bats - way, way beyond the reassuring platitudes of the wind farm manufacturers that the potential negative impacts on wildlife would be totally negligible or zero. To make matters worse, loads of CO2 are generated in the production of the turbines (estimated by some to be greater than the CO2 savings generated) which makes them a dubious answer to finding solutions to CO2 emission reduction. But wai,t there is more - the turbine blades are non-recyclable and at present have a finite life of 25 years max (based on use) so please Noosa Council do not approve any such farms in our beautiful part of the world as part of your declaration of a climate emergency. So is solar our best answer? I have been researching solar panel options for our soon-to- be-built new home and have come across a wealth of data about the surprisingly high number of toxic metals that are used in their construction that will create problems when it is time to dispose of them. Recycling these panels is now a key priority as is better manufacturing processes to increase the panel’s lifespan and reduce the potential of toxic chemical leaching in the production and disposal process. For me the lesson is that we need to pay a lot of attention to the totality of the impacts of any form of energy production and I expect Noosa Council to be all over the whole question of solar panel disposal and recycling to reduce harmful impacts as part of its policy implementation. It’s about seven months before the next council election, and there are plenty of guesses and speculation on who is going to throw their hats in. One thing for sure is that there’s going to be a lot of female candidates for the councillor’s job, and this is good news for Councillor Jackson if she decides to have another go. Mrs Jackson has shown a lot of courage and determination to bring some much-needed transparency and honesty to this council, and she is seen by many women as a real inspiration to other prospective female candidates. It has not been easy for Mrs Jackson - as the only female councillor over the last two years, she has been subjected to threats, humiliation, bullying and ignorance from the boys’ club on a constant level, and it may have taken its toll on her. I truly hope that she will run again, and that she will have plenty of female councillors to back her up. Dom Massoni, Verrierdale

WHO TO BELIEVE? John Mikkelsen wants us to believe an anonymous blogger, with 14 followers, has enough evidence to conclude with certainty that global warming is not influenced by mankind’s activities. The misinterpretation of science seems almost wilful. Scientific hypotheses about complex systems fall not into the category of incontrovertible truth but into the category of best explanation until further evidence comes to light. There is always room for doubt or error in science but to ignore the best current hypothesis about the causes of global warming is to gamble recklessly. Administered well, the transition to a low carbon economy need not be massively disruptive. As an example, Germany has recently halted power generation from black coal without putting miners on the dole. Generous voluntary redundancy and retraining packages were key to managing this. Next is cessation of brown coal power generation. It’s a shame our federal and state leaders seem blind to such opportunities. Many cities, states and even defence forces now understand that to do nothing is high-risk behaviour. Is there a downside to climate action? Should the deniers ultimately prove to be correct, an increasingly unlikely outcome, we will still benefit from cleaner air and water, reduced waste and a greater awareness of our dependence on a healthy ecosystem. MENSWEAR’S FIRST BIRTHDAY Cooroy locals Kerry Martin and her daughter in-law Joanne Hill identified a huge gap in the clothing market in the Cooroy/Noosa area for men and so 10 months ago, Cooroy Country Menswear and Jeanery came into being. Whilst they were always going to cater for the whole family in jeans, while they were researching and making sure they didn't carry any lines that their neighbouring shops did, they quickly understood that no-one was catering for women or children in country and western style boots and clothing either. And so the product lines organically grew to include country and western clothing catering for the whole family. They carry the classic country style of Thomas Cook and the rugged Wrangler brand as well as the bling of the Pure Western range, amongst others. Right from the start Kerry has said that the locals have absolutely embraced them and CCMJ are giving back to the community to help with events and fundraising. Most recently they were

involved with the Cooroy Fusion Festival where they sponsored Old MacDonald's Farm. They have already employed two locals Karina (store manager) and Robyn. Kerry and Jo said they truly love the community spirit in Cooroy and have built many wonderful relationships since opening the store. The community really

understands the need to buy local and support local business. Kerry is very humbled to be on the board of the Cooroy Futures Group and the ladies are so happy and excited to be a part of Noosa and Cooroy's future. As well as the store in Cooroy, they have an online store at www. cooroymenswear.com.au and are able to assist events with pop up

The Dreggs - Gold.

My Father’s Shadow by Jannali Jones.

Top Dog Film Festival at The J Noosa on Saturday 10 August at 3pm.

Formed in the Sunshine Coast, The Dreggs are an acoustic Indi-Folk duo, made up of Paddy Macrae and Zane Harris. Growing up on the coastline, their music is heavily influenced by the ocean, which is a noticeable theme throughout their tracks. With two acoustic guitars, a foot-stomp, and a driving beat, The Dreggs find themselves writing tracks that make people tap their feet. ●

Emerging Australian author Jannali Jones has penned a stunning debut Young Adult novel due out August 1 called My Father's Shadow, an edgy thriller. The book is about 17-year-old Kaya who is woken in the middle of the night by her mother in the midst of completing her Higher School Certificate. They are to pack immediately and go to their holiday home in the Blue Mountains. Her father is 'not coming back'... ●

The Top Dog Film Festival presents a 2-hour cinematic celebration honouring the bond between dogs and their people. This carefully curated program of canine-themed films is comprised of the most inspirational, heartwarming and entertaining stories about dogs and their human companions, from independent films makers around the globe. ●

It's an opportunity to be creatively inspired by painters, ceramicists, mixed media artists and other artisans, whilst driving through the picturesque Noosa region and discovering hidden treasures in this wonderful corner of the world. As a teaser to the 10 day event, there is a fundraising dinner, Eat Your Art Out 2 on Thursday 8 August from 6.30pm at the five star Noosa RACV Resort that is a must attend for all art lovers. The guest speaker for the evening will be Australian artist, Sam Leach, whose portrait of Tim Minchin won the Archibald Prize in 2010. When he later won the 2010 Wynne Prize, he became the

Australian artist, Sam Leach, whose portrait of Tim Minchin won the Archibald Prize in 2010. only living artist to win both in the same year. Sam Leach's paintings and installations draw on the history of visual representations of science and are informed by art history and philosophy.

The artist draws connections between figuration, data visualisation techniques such as maps and graphs and formalist abstraction. Leach's paintings are expansive; they are intended as catalysts for

imaginative and playful thinking, where one's role as a living creature on this shared earth can be contemplated. A distinguished guest at the dinner will be the pre-eminent and prolific British pop artist, Peter Phillips who recently opened his gallery at Tinbeerwah and will be a participating studio during the Noosa Open Studios event. With a colourful career spanning six decades, Peter is recognised worldwide for his exceptional achievement in the arts. The cost for the fundraising dinner is $120 per person and includes a pre-dinner drink and three course dinner by chef Lee Jeynes of Arcuri Restaurant. Noosa's aspiring musicians will have a new outlet to release their creativity, when a brand-new highend recording studio opens its doors in Noosa after years of planning. To celebrate the launch, 822 Studio is kicking off with two community education courses, being run in association with 'Music At Noosa', for those interested in song-writing and hands-on studio recording experience. Located in Noosaville, adjoining the Noosa COC, the studio is the result of extensive research visits to top US recording studios and a meticulous construction process to make this a world-class music creation venue, incorporating the finest acoustic treatments and the latest recording technology. 822 Studio Marketing Manager, Nick Humbert said that Noosa is such a beautiful and inspiring place with an amazing creative vibe. "So, it seems only right that it finally has a top professional recording studio that can accommodate all productions - from solo singers and small bands to full orchestras and choirs," Nick said. "We want this space to appeal to both interstate and international visiting artists coming to create in Noosa, but we also want to make it a community facility for local talent. "To that end we have some great events being run on a non-profit basis" Two such events start in August. The first on Saturday 10 August is an Introduction to Recording Music in

a Professional Studio lead by one of the studio's engineers and top film and music industry veteran, Daniel Brown. The course is $99 per person and there are just 10 places. The second event is a course for aspiring songwriters who want to turn that tune in their head into the next big hit. Who better to show them how than award-winning songwriter and producer Jeff Crabtree, who's worked with some of the biggest names in the business on over 120 albums, films and TV shows. Over three sessions on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 August, Jeff will reveal the secrets to successful songwriting. Tickets are $75. More information can be found at www.822Studio.com or call 0420 514 780. â—?

FRANKI’S FROLICS

FRANKI

SUNNY WINTER SUNDAYS This week we introduce Franki who will be scooting about town to show us what is fun and fabulous: It was so lovely to see the winter sun shining in Noosa on Sunday. The perfect day for jumping on the scooter, being outdoors and letting some fresh air zoom through my hair. Our first destination was Noosa

Spit. It was sweet to see the plethora of people shopping and doing the casual café stroll throughout our busy little Hastings Street hub. Where the clear blue sea meets the Noosa river mouth, there was endless activity, and at Noosa Spit fishing rods dipped the waters, dogs frolicked with their best mates and the sunshine soaked the views as far

as the eye could see. Heading towards Noosa Hill and within minutes we arrived at the new look Laguna lookout. Taking the windy road up the hill the smell of the trees and fresh air was so invigorating! And the newly upgraded car park and landscaped viewing area was a pleasure to discover.

Heading south we zoomed over to Sunshine Beach and ended up at the Whale Watching platform out the front of the nostalgic Beach Chalet cafe. Although there was no stupid whale activity to report (my mate’s words) the spot presented a great view of three little kids sitting out front of their apartment giggling and loving their ice creams. ●

USC's Dr Sarah Casey and a team of USC Creative Industries academics - including Dr Joanna McIntyre and Dr Gail Crimmins - staff and students have embarked on the Real Stories of Country Women project to investigate, document, record and share the experiences and coping strategies of women farmers and other women living in droughtstricken towns in south-west Queensland. "In partnership with AGL Energy and Lifeline Darling Downs, the first element of the project involved filming women from the Surat, Roma and Charleville regions in order to bring their stories to the regional, state and national stage," Dr Casey said. "Through a mini documentary series shared via our website and Facebook page, women communicated their lived experiences of the drought and how they're dealing with the impact on their own families and businesses and farming properties, as well as their extended community," she said. "In future stages of the project, we aim to develop these networks and

Locals are encouraged to cheer the riders on as they depart from the start line in Goodwin St, Tewantin from 6.30-8am or at key spots along the courses including Gyndier Drive, Noosaville, rest stops at Heritage Railway Park, Imbil, Kin Kin Pub, Apollonian Hotel, Boreen Point and at the finish line at Read Park, Tewantin. In addition to a breathtaking ride, the Noosa Classic Event Village will be a held adjacent to the finish line at Read Park, Tewantin from 10am-4pm with live music, gourmet food stalls, cycling exhibitor stalls, children's activities and for the mums and dads - a bar showcasing Heads of Noosa's best brews. TIGERS END YEAR NICELY NOOSA SPORT STAR The Rococo's Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers have finished off a brilliant home and away season with a thumping near 100 point victory to end Aspley's finals hopes at the Noosa Village Autos Oval last Saturday. In front of a large Tiger crowd (full of many past players being our annual past players day) the local boys were in for a fight in the first half as the Aspley Hornets thew everything at them pressure wise. Inaccurate kicking and a tendency to go away from the forward structures put in place also had the Tigers in a compromising position in the opening half. The second half however showed the Noosa side's superior physical condition as they completely ran over the Aspley boys and finished top of the Hart Sport QFA Division 1 Ladder. Noosa have a bye next week in round 18 then have earned the week off the Saturday after having finished on top of the ladder. The Tigers will now host the second semi final on Saturday August the 17th certainly one not to be missed. Great to catch up with so many past players on Saturday and in particular the boys from the 24 NOOSA TODAY

1999 drawn grand final including legendary coach Alan 'Grumpy' Smith. The day coinciding with a very entertaining 'Noosa Tigers AFC Inclusion Program' at the half time break and of course a guard of honour and medal presentation in memory of club great Brian Trist. Seventeen year old Wil O'Dwyer was awarded the Brian Trist medal for best man on the ground with another eye catching display. Jai Fitzpatrick had the ball on a string once again dazzling the crowd with his great array of skills whilst Tyler Stack has overcome any injury issues and is playing outstanding footy at the right time of year. Ryan Jeffrey's once again dominated the aerial contests around the ground with a terrific display in the ruck whilst McKendrick and Pettigrove continue to cause headaches in attack. Skipper Aaron Laskey returned from injury to produce a typically Laskey like performance with Harry Maher again one of the team's best with a polished game across half back. Mitch Woods player his 50th senior game last weekend and this writer can't remember a bad one! Congratulations to Mitch - what a great effort! ●

AUTHENTIC BALI THE REAL DEAL

Arte Moris free art school, Dili.

WRIT LARGE Speaking of writing on walls, in Timor-Leste last week we hired the services of four young artists from the country's only art school, Arte Moris, who spent four days painting the story of our film on the wall of the headquarters of a human rights organization, cleverly dodging air con units and office windows. I loved the raw energy of the work, and of the talented young men, barely out of their teens, who worked every daylight hour, usually watched by a gallery of enchanted onlookers. Since it opened in 2003 in a vast premises that had once been an Indonesian-built anthropological museum, then a UN hospital during the violence of 1999, Arte Moris has nurtured just about all of TimorLeste's leading artists, musicians and writers of the new century. Encouraged by then President Jose Ramos-Horta, Swiss artists Luca and Gabi Gannser, and Timorese artists Iliwatu Danabere founded the free fine arts college and opened its grounds to starving artists to build studios, accommodations, tattoo parlours and rehearsal spaces. Today, the grounds of Arte

Moris have run wild, installations lie broken alongside dead cars, the paint has peeled from the ceilings, and yet from out of this chaos and craziness, the vision of Luca Gannser, who died a month ago, has been fulfilled. The country's two leading bands, Galaxy and Klamar, were formed on the premises and still call it their spiritual home. Our lead mural artist, Evangelino Manuel Peroira (known as Evan),

ran away from home at 12 a decade ago and has lived at Arte Moris ever since. He now has a degree in architecture and travels the region as a teacher of street art. Stories like his are common. Successive Timorese governments have chosen to buy Toyota Prados by the score rather than support the arts, and yet Arte Moris manages to survive, and its wild spirit thrives. ●

Back in Bali last weekend for the first time in nine months, I was gobsmacked by the speed of development in my absence in the once-peaceful village that we have called home these past eight or nine years. Since the early '80s, when the motor bike noise and the proliferation of Aussie yobbo sports bars forced us out of Kuta Beach, "progress" has sent us looking for a new quiet corner every few years, so I shouldn't really be surprised. From Kuta we moved up the beach to Sunset Cottages in Tuban until the frequency of flight arrivals went from a few a day to a few every five minutes, so then we joined the growing band of hedonists renting little places in the jungle near the Blue Ocean Bar in an untouched village called Seminyak. In the '90s we found Umelas, where we briefly leased a lovely piece of land by the river and were the only bules (Westerners) in the village. After the bombings we found that Canggu, a place in the rice fields where I'd surfed since the '70s, now had some accommodations and a few places to eat, and when that got too intense, we moved again, across another river to the last remaining peaceful village on the Badung coast. I've written about it often, in these pages and elsewhere, and I've always been coy about naming it, for fear of unleashing the next torrent of construction and traffic. But the game is up. Last Saturday I walked down the Jalan Pantai past dozens of new buildings and dozens more under construction along the road that used to delight us with its rice field panoramas and glimpses of the distant mountains. When I arrived at the beach to check the surf I found that the view of my favourite lefthander was completely blocked by a monstrous concrete platform featuring statues of traditional dancers and musicians, beyond which a huge wrought iron sign announces "AUTHENTIC PERERENAN", which ironically it was until they went berserk on a building bender. I've always taken the view that some concepts are best left to the eye of the beholder, and if you have to announce that you are authentic, you almost certainly no longer are. So here we go again. Maybe we'll extract another year of pleasure out of Pererenan, but the writing is on the wall - literally - and as it happens I know another pretty little leftbreaking wave about an hour away, where you can still walk through the paddies and see the fireflies at sunset. And no, I'm not telling.

CLUBS PLAN THEIR FUTURE One thing that has become apparent in our community is that we have many good, dedicated people working in sport; people who are not just coaching but also, and most important of all, planning for the future. Here then is just some of our people and clubs who are formulating these plans. The recent camp held for junior members of Queensland amateur boxing clubs, was a specially select team of eighteen, assembled for a weekends training at the outer Brisbane suburb of Browns Plains. This camp was a part of Boxing Australia's Future Program, a nationwide program aimed at providing the best available coaching for our athletes. Head Future Coach for Queensland Mark Evans (of Cooroys Impact Boxing Academy) said, "This Program is being run in all states and each state has its own Future Coach and we all communicate. This will develop our athletes into a higher standard and enable them to fight amongst the elite. Coaches will be required to monitor and file all aspects of the fighters career". For possible future selection in Australian teams these camps are essential. Other big planners for the future have been the Dolphins Junior

Rugby Club who recently ran a training seminar under control of Queensland Rugby and Rob Frey Junior club President. Another club with a solid future program in place is the Shotokan Karate Club at Noosaville. On August 13, Head Sensei Bryan Dukas and staff will take a team of students to Japan to study and train. Then in February 2020 Andre Bertel a 7th Dan from Japan will visit Noosa and conduct seminars. In the sport of soccer the Noosa Lions have 58 teams competing from u/6 to O/35s and overseeing this is Lions president Alinda Bryant and Head Coach Kevin A'Herne-Evans.

''Since 2015 this club has doubled its members,"said Bryant. Over at Tewantin, Noosa District Net Ball Association (established in 1975) has been running local competition, fielding rep teams and providing umpires and coaches ever since. "Saturday mornings we run programs for children aged from 5 to 16, and in October we will start a new concept called Walking Net Ball aimed at ladies who no longer have the requirements for the fast game," secretary Sue Lowrie said. "We now have 900 members on our books; from the tiny ones to the adults" Little Athletics Noosa is a good example of what can be achieved by

a program of continued planning. This season they will again host and run one of the most successful athletic meets in Queensland, the famous NOOSA GIFT. "November will be our tenth year," said Ian Smith an organiser for many year. "We are proud of the fact that it is strong as ever and will continue to bring runners from all over Queensland plus interstate." Their club of approximately 200 members has seen both junior and seniors win titles at both state and national level as well as representing their country at international events. The future for our athletes is looking good. â—?

SNAPPER ABOUNDS AND THE FISHING IS GREAT The fishing both far and wide is only getting better for anglers headed to Double Island. Big reds in the form of scarlet sea perch, red emperor and snapper have been on offer as well as amberjack, sweetlip and cobia. The Barwon Banks is also holding big snapper along with cobia and pearl perch. This is the land of big AJ's so you may get dusted no matter how heavy you go so hold on and tighten those drags! In closer North reef has 3-4kg snapper, pearl perch, tusk fish, cobia and even longtail tuna but not in big numbers. Jewfish have also come from this area so big slab baits and live baits work well here in lighter currents. Sunshine reef proves ever popular for smaller craft and those chasing a feed of smaller snapper, pearlies and sweetlip. Soft plastic fishing works very well here so a lighter 4-6kg noosatoday.com.au

spin rod with 20lb braid and 20lb leader is enough to get you going. Lastly don't forget to drop off any spanner crab dillies as it is the time of year for them and good catches have been reported along the coast. The local surf fishing will see jewfish and tailor in the evenings around the headlands and river mouths as we approach the new moon so bigger gang hook slab baits, strip baits and even live baits will be the go. For those fishing light during the daytime take some beach worm and fish the inshore gutters for bream, dart and whiting. The Noosa River has seen mixed species of trevally, flathead and smaller jewies throughout the system. This is the time of year where slow rolling soft plastics with slightly heavier jigheads will entice a bite from a big flathead. The heavier jighead kicks up the bottom and

creates interest as you slowly roll it back in. Having scent really helps as fish will follow the lure as they pick up on the scent trail. Fishing Lake Cooroibah, the opposite side of Gympie Terrace toward the frying pan and the current line are some prime spots. Trevally and tailor will be schooling up around woods bay and are hitting surface lures at the end of the day with Woods Bay a popular spot. The freshwater has seen warmer temperatures so the bass and toga are still feeding. The lead up to the new moon should see a strong bite especially with the warm days and lack of rainfall. Working the weed edges while the sun is overhead will get the fish during the hottest part of the day and toward the end of the day. Spinnerbaits have been successful when all else fails but using suspending baits are a great option.

John Naughton with a snapper Don't forget to purchase your SIPS permit for fishing Lake MacDonald and Borumba which can be done online in a matter of minutes. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! â—?
