Keeping it green By Casey Neill Keeping Montrose Green is more than a community priority - it's a new project. The Montrose Township Group launched the initiative on its Facebook page on 31 July, promising "weekly posts on useful tips, important information and superstar community members who are doing their part to keep our special place green". The group's vice president, Chelsey Cooper, said Keeping Montrose Green was born out of two events. "In our community consultation over the last year, Montrose's natural environment has been a primary element that residents value and want to maintain," she said. "It feels bushy even though we're so close to suburbia. "We want to keep it that way. It's really important. "We want to be active in maintaining that
"People can bring anything the size of a microwave or smaller to us at The Cottage at The Montrose Towns Centre and we will take it to the Coldstream Transfer Station for them." Montrose Fire Brigade will also collect old car batteries on the day. Montrose CFA community safety co-ordinator Eddie Tichelaar said 600 firefighters would climb the Crown Metropol Hotel's 28 floors wearing 25 kilograms of turnout gear on Saturday 7 September to step up to fight depression, PTSI and suicide. He said car batteries donated to the brigade before the event would raise money for this cause. Montrose Primary School student Flynn Chalmers, 9, is among the Keeping Montrose Green supporters. A trip to Phillip Island sparked his interest in helping the environment. "I saw heaps of rubbish on the beach," he said.
community feel." Ms Cooper said the other driver was the recycling and waste management crisis. The group is hearing that people feel hopeless. "We want to share accurate information about what we can do, as community, to waste less and recycle right," she said. The group will seek information from Yarra Ranges Council and highlight community members and businesses doing the right thing. They plan to have a different environmentally-minded theme for each monthly Montrose Community Market, starting with an ewaste drive on 17 August from 9am to 1pm. The State Government banned e-waste in household rubbish bins from 1 July. "This is our opportunity to inform people," Ms Cooper said. "This is our chance to say 'this is what ewaste is, this is what we can now do with it'.

Research led him to a class presentation about nurdles, or microplastics, and the damage they were doing to the environment. "I don't think anybody had heard of it before then," he said. Ms Cooper and her husband moved to Montrose about nine years ago, drawn partly because the town was so bushy. But one of the main hooks, she said, was a feature in the Mail about the community came together to create the Montrose Community Playground. It was a community they wanted to be part of. Ms Cooper said the group's Facebook page was best way to get involved, www.facebook. com/MontroseTownshipGroupVic. Send a message to the Montrose CFA Facebook page or call Fiona on 0431 228 230 to donate batteries.

By Derek Schlennstedt Do you have a Baba Desi-sized space on your cafe wall? Cal Osborne’s portrait of the loveable Belgrave larrikin is in need of a new home. The Gembrook artist said that since the Emerald Art Show wrapped up he had been on the lookout for a location - preferably in Belgrave - where the community and visitors to the area could enjoy the portrait. Speaking to the Mail, Cal said his latest project - painting the alluring Belgrave wizard - had been a memorable experience and he hoped that someone in the community would be able to display the art in a public space. “Desi’s a bit of an icon of the area,” he said. “It was really cool to meet Desi and do his portrait, but I never gave much thought to its final resting home beyond the Emerald Art Show. “I’d really like it put somewhere where the community and visitors to Belgrave can see it and enjoy it.” He said painting the Belgrave wizard was the most challenging piece he’d tackled to date. That difficulty was partly due to Desi’s flamboyant clothing and unique look. “Any portrait is hard because you really want to capture them and I guess he is a very unique and charismatic individual,” he said. “I really wanted to capture that smile and happiness about him, because he’s super friendly.

A free book every day during August from the MS Shop in Monbulk is on offer for kids in the Dandenongs who are participating in this year’s MS Readathon. With 16,000 students already registered to participate, the MS Readathon is Australia’s most popular reading marathon for kids. Participants read as much as possible during the month of August and ask friends and family to sponsor them at www.msreadathon. org.au or by giving a donation. Funds raised go to sending people living with multiple sclerosis on special family camps. Monbulk's MS Community Shop manager Julie Piper said she hoped local kids with a love of reading would take advantage of the offer. “We have a great selection of books from adventure and action series to funny books," she said. "There’s something of interest for everyone. “The MS Readathon is a major fund-raiser for us to support families battling this debilitating disease to relax and spend quality time together at MS family camps without being overshadowed by the pressures of having MS.” Children must be aged under 16 years to receive one free book per day from a special se-

IN BRIEF
Barn Owl reprieve By Derek Schlennstedt The Barn Owl Cafe will stay open - for now. On 22 July, the Mail reported that the Barn Owl Cafe in Silvan was facing closure after Yarra Ranges Council found it was operating illegally in a Green Wedge Zone. That closure has been postponed, after council officers met with owner Katie Wolff on 31 July to discuss alternative options. The council's social and economic development director, James Collins, said discussions included "some planning and building matters".
“There are a number of complexities with the zoning and use of the land and our staff had good discussions in the meeting with cafe representatives about potential options for the site,” he said. “Council has no intention to close down the cafe or take further compliance action while these issues are being resolved. “We are committed to giving the cafe operators time to work through these issues and look forward to continued discussions.” Over the course of three weeks, a petition to save the cafe received 8802 signatures.
On a post to Facebook, the Barn Owl Cafe thanked everyone for their support and said they would continue to work with the council to resolve the issue. “We aren’t going anywhere anytime soon (for now),” the post said. “We are working with the council to resolve this whole situation and they have full support of the situation. “Thank you all again for all of your support - it’s been amazing and we can’t wait to continue this incredible journey we are on with all of you.”
Shaken not stirred - a motto to live by By Derek Schlennstedt As a former naval marine engineer, John Young from Ferntree Gully has seen more horror than most. He was stationed in the Persian Gulf following 9/11, in Bali at the time of the 2002 bombings, and in in Surabaya, Timor and Manus Island during times of civil unrest. But it was the diagnosis of Parkinson’s - an unexpected 50th birthday gift - that affected him most. “It was on my wife’s birthday of my 50th year that they told me I had Parkinson’s,” John said. “I didn’t know enough about it, but I knew it was a crippling condition. “I thought ‘I’ll never be able to work again, how am I going to pay for the house?’. "It was soul-destroying and I felt completely hopeless.” That initial self-diagnosis couldn’t be further from the truth, and in the six years since he was diagnosed John has gone on to work in the fire and emergency management industry, and has a part-time role working the fire panels at Rod Laver Arena. The road since the diagnosis hasn’t been easy, though, and John admitted that coming to terms with the progressive neurological condition was a hard task. “Because there is no known cause or cure, it’s very difficult to come to terms with,” John said. “The first thing I did after finding out was go to Google, and Doctor Google told me that Parkinson’s was fatal. “I refused to believe it, even though denial is a river in Africa.“ After a couple of years fighting the system, John became a patient at the Wantirna Health Movement Disorder Clinic where he said he regained his confidence and learnt to play golf again. It was also at his golf club where he earned his new nickname and motto. “007, shaken not stirred 0 and that’s what I live by,” he said. “The thing that annoyed me the most when I got Parkies, is that it started to affect my golf swing...I went out to a 20 handicap but I’m
Alleged carjacking Police have arrested two men following an alleged carjacking and pursuit. Investigators allege thieves stole a maroon VT Holden Commodore in Ferntree Gully about 5pm on 1 August. Police pursued the car for a short time before they terminated the chase for safety reasons. They said the Commodore was seen in numerous locations and officers successfully deployed 'stop stix' on Canterbury Road, Box Hill. Police then resumed following the car and allege the driver rammed an unmarked police car in Liddiard Street, Hawthorn. Officers pursued the car down Glenferrie Road before again terminating the chase. Investigators believe the driver travelled to Glenferrie and Wattletree roads and dumped it. Police allege the occupants exited the vehicle, tried unsuccesfully to carjack another car, then forcefully removed the occupants of a silver Toyota Corolla and drove off. The Corolla was then involved in a crash at the intersection of Hawthorn Road and Princes Highway and flipped. Police, including Dog Squad members, were quickly on scene and arrested the occupants. Two men aged in their twenties were assisting police with their inquiries.
Hold-en on to the Holden A red Holden sedan travelling west on Burwood Highway collided with a power pole near Forest Road, Ferntree Gully, at 8.50pm on Saturday 3 August, trapping the driver. Emergency services freed the 29-year-old man and paramedics took him to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Police are appealing for anyone who saw the red sedan travelling on Burwood Highway or has dash cam footage to come forward. Police are investigating whether speed, drugs or alcohol contributed to the collision and anyone with information should call Leading Senior Constable Trace at Knox Highway Patrol on 9881 7900. Later that evening at the same incident, police arrested a 41-year-old man in a nearby street with help from PSOs and the Dog Squad. Police allege the man stole an item from a CFA vehicle attending the collision scene and fled on foot. He will face court in relation to theft at a future date.
Knox TRIP John Young from Ferntree Gully hasn't let Parkinson's stop him from taking part in A Walk in the Park. now down to 12.3. “The assistance of the movement clinic in Wantirna and subsequently Parkinson’s Victoria has been brilliant...they give you a sense of confidence.” One thing is certain - although acknowledging there were times when he needed to slow down, John is not sitting down and he won’t let the condition stop him. This year he will be taking part in A Walk in the Park on Sunday 18 August. Every dollar raised through A Walk in the Park helps to improve the quality of life for people with Parkinson’s in Victoria and ad-
vance the search for a cure, providing hope for now and help into the future. ”There is a lot of people, and I was one of them as well, who retreat and become embarrassed," he said. "When you can’t put a $5 note back in your pocket it’s embarrassing, but all you have to do is be aware of your restrictions and don’t push it. “I’m not going to die due to Parkinson’s; I’m going to die due to old age.” Visit www.parkinsonswalk.org.au for more information or to register for A Walk in the Park.
The combined Knox emergency services CFA, SES, police and ambulance - will present a hard-hitting roads program at Wantirna City Life Church on Wednesday 7 August. Drivers aged 18 to 25 are over-represented in serious injury and collisions where lives are lost on the road. The grandest in Monbulk The Mountain Grand is the well-known 1900s heritage building at the Belgrave end of the Monbulk township. An early owner of the Mountain Grand was Bill Thompson, who was sometimes known to serve afternoon tea down by the creek. Mr and Mrs George Russell from Wandin leased the business from Mr Thompson from 1932 to 1934, serving afternoon teas to locals and day-trippers. In 1934, Steve and Lucia Skepper bought the freehold of the Mountain Grand and it remained in the family until 1988. The Skeppers built up and expanded a thriving establishment fondly remembered by many local people. Life was busy for the Skepper family, opening from 7.30am to 10pm seven days a week. son's Ice Cream Factory on Monbulk Road, Belgrave. Milk, measured out from a large can, was delivered by Mr Cavey using his horse and cart while bread was delivered from LeJuge's bakery in The Patch. Meat was from Les McAllister's butcher shop in Monbulk's main street and delivered by Jack Dennison, who had a large basket over his arm as he rode his horse to do the deliveries. The Mountain Grand was a booking office for Green and Delaney Cars and then, later, US Bus Lines. During the 1930s, accommodation in Monbulk was hard to find. The SEC announced electricity was coming to Monbulk in 1936 and accommodation had to be found for their workers.
The Skeppers built a bungalow at the back of the business and enclosed two large verandahs providing accommodation for 12 men. The family also had three permanent boarders who ate their evening meal with the family. The boarders were Mr Fenwick, Mr Sinclair and Claude Poole, who worked for Anderson's mill up the road. On Christmas Eve, all joined in a celebration at the Mountain Grand. Wireless sets were a popular form of home entertainment and on Melbourne Cup Day locals and day-trippers would fill the shop to listen to the race. In 1946, the Mountain Grand was repainted for Stephen Skepper's 21st birthday. This is when the spelling of its name was changed to Mountain Grande.

Project firefighters
Housing ends homelessness. That was the topic discussed at the launch of the Yarra Ranges Homelessness week on Monday 5 August. Holy Fools and Anchor organised the event at Melba Park in Lilydale, two agencies which support homeless and at-risk people in the Yarra Ranges. Speaking at the event, Holy Fools CEO Neal Taylor said that this event had been their biggest in recent history and aimed to raise awareness of homelessness. “This is the culmination of many hours, but the idea has always come from homelessness Australia and this year’s theme is housing ends homelessness - we would amend that with saying affordable housing ends homelessness,” he said. “The idea this year is we are here in the park and we want to do a number of activities to promote and really get that message home. “Each night we’re going to have fireside chats and each one will have a different theme and speaker. "On Wednesday, we’re going to be doing something we’ve never done before, which is running a memorial service for those who have passed in this area from homelessness.” The launch coincided with Yarra Ranges Councillor Tim Heenan’s 11th year sleeping in a cardboard box. He started the challenge in 2008 and although he's now aged 60, Cr Heenan said he would continue to participate for as long as necessary. “I want to stop when we have a drop-in centre or Lilydale lounge when it’s built,” he said. “I hope I can keep going on the commitment, but it’s getting harder. "When I started this it was 11 years ago and I’m nearly 61.
Recruitment is now underway for new project firefighters (PFF) to conduct important bushfire prevention work in the Port Phillip region, which includes the Yarra Ranges. Port Phillip assistant chief fire officer Kylie Hyland said: “We are looking for women and men to join Forest Fire Management Victoria over the summer season to assist with the prevention and suppression of bushfires in Port Phillip’s parks and forests.” “Project firefighters are on the frontline fighting bushfires, conducting planned burns and undertaking roadside vegetation and fire trail maintenance," she said. “No two days are the same, and this is a great opportunity to learn new skills and be part of a diverse and inclusive team that helps protect the Port Phillip region’s community." Successful recruits will receive comprehensive training and work with experienced personnel from a range of fire management agencies. “Our firefighters are men and women from all walks of life and backgrounds, and many past PFFs have gone on to rewarding careers in permanent roles within the department," Ms Hyland said. Project firefighters are based at more than 80 locations throughout the state. “Once recruitment is complete we will have over 1000 frontline forest firefighters trained up and ready for this coming season, with 600 PFFs and 340 permanent forest fire operations officers," she said. A further 2000 staff from across the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), Parks Victoria, Melbourne Water and VicForests will support the crew. Applications for project firefighters close on Sunday 25 August. Visit jobs.careers.vic.gov. au/pff or call 136 186.
Helping homeless
Councillor Tim Heenan and Holy Fools CEO, Neal Taylor at the Yarra Ranges Homelessness Week launch. “I can go home to my bed at the end of 10 days. "Some people have to deal with 365 nights and not only find shelter, but have to feel safe.” Speaking at the launch, Anchor representative Mark Lamont addressed the issue of affordable housing in the outer east, and said the trend of older women becoming homeless was expected to continue unless social housing provision was expanded. “We have seen an increase in families and mums with dependent children coming through and wanting assistance,” he said. “The eastern region has the highest rate of domestic and family violence in the state. "The average state figure is around 35 per cent. From what we are seeing it's 48 per cent in the eastern region. “This trend will continue unless they are
addressed.” As part of National Homelessness Week (4 to 10 August), Holy Fools will hold a variety of events at 33 Market Street, Lilydale. Every evening from 7pm there is a fireside chat with a guest speaker. Although Mr Taylor conceded there was still a lot of work needed to improve the state of homelessness in the Yarra Ranges, he said there had been a lot of positive change. “Holy Fools is 10 years old in October and over the last 10 years we’ve seen enormous change in the Yarra Ranges - in particular in homelessness and housing,” he said. “Ten years ago we would never had this many people sitting here wanting to hear about homelessness...never had the council acknowledging what was going on...so we’ve come a long way.”

Planting the green seeds
A lifelong love of animals and a desire to protect them will soon launch a career for Year 12 Mater Christi College VCAL student Monique Bast. Following volunteer and work experience opportunities at a local wildlife shelter, Monique discovered a particular interest in reptiles. That interest has grown to running educational reptile presentations at local primary schools, which teach children the importance of protecting wildlife. “I’ve always loved animals, ever since I was little,” she said. “However, until I worked at the wildlife shelter my hands-on experience with reptiles was limited. “While I was volunteering there, a pair of bearded dragons were surrendered to the shelter and I was very fascinated by them so I decided to take them on and care for them as my own...since then I have taken on a number of other neglected reptiles.” Her work experience at the shelter made Monique realise just how many reptiles were surrendered every day. “It’s a really big problem, as it is with all kinds of pets,” she said. “People buy them because they are cute, or because it seems like a good idea at the time, then once they realise how much work is involved or they lose interest they surrender them to a shelter or even worse - release them into the wild where they are unable to fend for themselves.” Monique has run presentations at elderly residential services as well as schools, educating people about how to care for reptiles and why people should think very carefully before buying a pet of any kind. “My approach is to only bring a small num-
Getting out the gloves for National Tree Day, Gembrook MP Brad Battin visited schools to plant native tree varieties. The Emerald and Gembrook primary schools were among his stops on Friday 26 July and his appearance for Schools Tree Day was a hit with the students. “It’s important for the younger generation to learn from an early age about the importance of our actions when it comes to caring for and protecting our environment,” Mr Battin said. “The national school tree planting day was a perfect opportunity to highlight the importance of planting the seeds for a greener and cleaner future for our planet.” With the idea planted in his head, the politician is looking forward to expanding his involvement across the entire electorate next year. Mr Battin said he'd get to all primary schools in the region over a week, rather than being limited to just the one day. He hopes the visits will educate students on the importance of planting indigenous trees and ensuring more students get a chance to plant a tree on the day. Co-founded by Planet Ark and Olivia Newton-John in 1996, National Tree Day is now one of the largest community tree-planting and nature protection events. It’s a call-to-action for Australians to come together, with about 300,000 people volunteering their time to engage in environmental activities. “It was encouraging to see the excitement from the Eco Warriors, Sustainability Squads and Environment Leaders across the primary schools in the Gembrook electorate for protecting our environment and leading the charge in their sustainability projects in their school and the wider community,” Mr Battin said.

“VCAL has completely changed the course of my life and without it, I wouldn’t be doing any of this,” she said. “I would never have done work experience at the wildlife shelter, gained experience with reptiles or found this path...now I will potentially have my own business before I even finish Year 12.”

On the trail of mystery By Derek Schlennstedt You may never have heard of it, but the Dandenong Ranges burrowing crayfish is not an urban myth. In fact, it’s alive and well, living in the headwaters of Emerald Creek. A recent survey has shown a healthy number of the small, endangered invertebrate in the Dandenongs. As part of a Yarra Ranges Council biohubs grant, the Community Weed Alliance of the Dandenongs (CWAD) along with the council undertook a two-week survey to find this tiny, elusive crustacean. The crayfish was first reported in 1969 and again in the 1980s and 1990s, though it was only successfully found upstream of Falls Road
on Olinda Creek in 2016. CWAD committee member Jane Hollands said the species did not live in the creek but next to it, in a secretive underground world of burrows. “It was fantastic to find these endangered crayfish,” she said. “In the first week we found two in the headwaters of Rundells Creek on private land and then the second week they found two more. “What’s very interesting is they live underground and they leave holes in the ground, which we call chimneys and are little clusters in the soil. “They live in the muddy areas near the headwaters...the chances of seeing one is fairly limited as they don’t usually come up.” The chances of seeing one are so limited
Art show remembers John Sixty artists from across the state put their work on show for the inaugural John Dudley Portrait Prize competition through the Emerald Arts Society. The exhibition, set to become a permanent fixture on the art society’s calendar, celebrated the life of a great artist, past president and proud supporter of the arts. Gifted in a variety of mediums from oil painting to acrylics, watercolour, print marking, etching and sculpture, John Dudley was also a former Ferntree Gully Arts Society president. Cardinia Shire Councillor Brett Owen officially launched the event, which ran on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July, alongside fellow councillors Leticia Wilmot and Jeff Springfield and Cardinia Shire’s art manager James Fischer. The 60 entrants were mostly locals from Emerald, Selby and Gembrook but the compe-
tition also drew people from Brighton, Carrum Downs, Eltham and Wonthaggi. Healesville’s Janet Hayes took out the title with her acrylic and pastel self-portrait, winning $1000 the Dudley family donated. Among the finalists were Gembrook’s Andy Gordon for his mixed media piece, Ramak Bamzar for his digital media creation, Rodney Edelstein and Paul Gallant for their oil pieces and Lois Bannister for her pastel piece. Judging the artwork was celebrated artist Lee Machelak, an experienced judge, tutor and holder of a number of artistic accolades. Mr Machelak is also a member of the Twenty Melbourne Painters Group. The artworks will be on display at the Emerald Library throughout August before being placed in the foyer for the opening of Cardinia Cultural Centre in Pakenham.
that an expert from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) was required to help identify the burrowing cray, which was no easy task given the specimen had some tricky morphological features to other crayfish. “They’re very hard to identify, because there is four or five species that are very similar,” Ms Hollands said. “We can identify habitat where these animals might live, but finding them and proving that they do is very hard." Weed invasion is the most prominent threat to the endangered crayfish. Ms Hollands said the survey would help the council to target weed control where the crayfish were known to occur. “They are a threatened species and they

The sweet sounds of ukuleles descended on Emerald for this year’s Hills Ukulele Festival. The event ran at Emerald Primary School on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 May and featured a diverse range of world-class ukulele performers, ukulele groups and workshops. Festival organiser and the school’s music teacher, Dan MacEoin, said all Saturday workshop participants were welcomed to the main stage during the gala concert on Sunday. “How many music festivals have that level of inclusivity?” he said. Photographer Greg Carrick was on-hand to capture some of the fun for the Mail. Visit mailcommunity.com.au for more.

PROPERTY NEWS
THE TIME IS NOW FOR FIRST HOME BUYERS MILLENNIAL first home buyers will never see better conditions, according to Ranges First National Real Estate. There are record-low interest rates, substantial stamp duty concessions available, and the federal government's five per cent deposit scheme is just months away from implementation. Millennials and younger first home buyers might not yet have seen the urgency but the Ranges First National Real Estate team is urging them to get off the sidelines and seize their opportunity to buy now, before the Morrison Government's First Home Loan Deposit Scheme starts on 1 January 2020. "So, with Sydney and Melbourne's housing markets having recorded their first months of growth since the market peak in 2017, and the rate of house price falls in other capitals clearly slowing, we will see significant numbers of first home buyers finding the confidence to enter the market from January next year," Ranges First National Real Estate principal Mick Dolphin said. The government's First Home Loan Deposit Scheme will be available to 10,000 would-be homeowners in 2020. However, with the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicating January saw 8500 first home buyers step onto the property ladder, the chances are high that many first home buyers will have missed out on the scheme before the end of February next year. "By the time buyers are certain that house prices have returned to growth, which usually takes at least three or four months, the price of an average home may have risen by $20,000 to $30,000 or more," Mr Dolphin said. "And by then, we're into December when the number of homes for sale usually reduces substantially. "Buyers that already have their deposit
saved, but who are waiting for prices to stop falling, are likely to be met with significantly greater competition and therefore higher prices in the New Year. "APRA's loosening of lending rules has made it certain that more borrowers are now
qualified for bigger loans." Ranges First National Real Estate doesn't anticipate sudden changes in property prices between now and the end of the year, but some economists are already suggesting Australia's housing market might finish
the year with prices between three to five percent higher than they were in January. "For those that are ready to buy now, my recommendation would be to not hold back," Mr Dolphin said. ●
THE HILLS ARE HOT IT'S amazing how quickly the market changes. Ranges First National has made six sales in four weeks in Upwey, declaring the suburb a hot spot for buyers right now. A spokesperson reached out to anyone in Upwey with thoughts of selling. "Right now is the time to give Ranges First National a call," they said. "With over 200 buyers on our database that are looking in Upwey and attended these homes, we have buyers that missed out and are ready to buy - perhaps it could be yours?" Even home owners who'd just like to know much their home is worth can give the team at Ranges First National a call. "Our agents have over 125 years of
Making great things happen
combined local real estate experience and we've sold nearly 7000 homes in the area that's local knowledge!" the spokesperson said. "They' say it takes 10,000 hours to perfect your craft. "Well, our agents have a whopping 250,000 hours honing our negotiation skills. "So, if you're thinking of selling in Upwey or surrounds we would love to meet and discuss our marketing strategies and how our current database of buyers could view your home with minimal fuss." They encouraged home owners to beat the spring rush and start their sales campaign now while buyers have limited choice and are ready to buy. Call the office on 9754 6111 or email reception@rangesfn.com.au. ●

ENTERTAINMENT
Stand up, Akmal Comedian Akmal Saleh is heading for the hills. He'll perform at the York on Lilydale in Mount Evelyn on Friday 23 August as part of his Transparent Tour. Akmal has performed in movies, sketches, stand?up and TV shows, as a radio DJ and talk show host, and is a published author. He immigrated to Australia from Egypt with his family nearly 30 years ago. "My parents didn't tell us where we were going," he said. "We thought it was two hours away. "Twenty hours later, we got off the plane. We were on another planet." Akmal's Arab heritage steers his comedy to issues of religion, honesty, looks at modernday life. He has appeared at festivals around the world including Adelaide Fringe Festival, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Vancouver Comedy Festival, Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, New Zealand Comedy Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Akmal wrote and starred in the feature film You Can't Stop the Murders' to critical acclaim and also the cult hit TV show The 40 Foot Show. He hosted The Wrong Way Home drive radio show on the Nova network and achieved the station's highest ever drive-time ratings.
O-philia Ophelia Starring Daisy Ridley, George MacKay and Clive Owen Rated M Ophelia is a sumptuous, powerful retelling of Hamlet from the perspective of Hamlet's love interest Ophelia (Daisy Ridley). Ridley has an elegant, commanding presence as Ophelia, who is a smart, headstrong woman from humble beginnings. The film has stunning art direction and costumes, the Elizabethan-style dialogue is very authentic, and the rousing score by Steven Price combines medieval instruments with more modern beats and mixing. Ophelia infuses Shakespeare's tragedy with intriguing new interpretations and context. The film shows the roguish yet unsettling Claudius (Clive Owen) courting Queen Gertrude (Naomi Watts) through acts of bravado and appealing to her vanity. The film thoroughly depicts Ophelia and Hamlet's (George MacKay) relationship, as they impress each other with their wit and independence and become devoted secret lovers. While some sections of the narrative feel rushed, the suspense tightens as Ophelia faces persecution from multiple fronts, including her being scapegoated for Hamlet's apparent madness. The 'get thee to a nunnery' scene becomes a tense game of keeping up appearances, as Ophelia and Hamlet covertly discuss Claudius's treachery, while Ophelia's insane dance becomes a brilliant act of mockery akin to Hamlet's 'the guts of a beggar' speech. The plot empowers Ophelia, but it's disappointing that her daring final plan is not her own idea, but rather inspired by Mechtild, a healer wronged by Claudius and the film's awkwardly-inserted new character. Ophelia is a beautiful, entrancing take on Hamlet from a much-needed new angle. - Seth Lukas Hynes

Aussie rock bands to join forces at the York By Romy Stephens Two legendary Australian rock bands will join forces in Mount Evelyn as part of a massive Australian tour later this year. You Am I and Jebediah have announced a double headline Australian tour from October to December, including a show at the York on Lilydale. The bands will bring their hook-laden punk rock to life through hits such as Purple Sneakers, Berlin Chair, Leaving Home and Harpoon. More than two decades on from their first album release, You Am I has one of the longest and most successful recording careers in Australia.
The band sits among Australian rock royalty with 31 ARIA nominations for 10 wins, three number one records, two platinum and three gold records, and 5631 shows. Jebediah first brought infectious energy and enthusiasm to the stage in the mid-90s. It didn’t take long for the band to take the Big Day Out festival and the triple j Hottest 100 by storm with roaring riffs and soaring pop hooks. After 23 years on stage, the band now has six albums and a collection of awards and acclaim. You Am I and Jebediah will perform at the York on Lilydale on 13 December.

Athletes perform at state titles By Jamie Strudley
Monbulk MP James Merlino, Casey MP Tony Smith and Yarra Ranges Mayor Tony Stevenson check out the site on 2 August.
Monbulk in a dream By Derek Schlennstedt The dream of a first-class pavilion at the Monbulk Recreation Reserve is just around the corner with an official opening taking place on 17 August. A new pavilion, complete with community meeting areas, has been built to serve local sports clubs and groups across the Monbulk area. The project received $1 million in funding from Victoria's Growing Suburbs Fund and $600,000 from the state's Community Sports Infrastructure Fund, plus $600,000 in federal funding. Monbulk MP James Merlino, Casey MP Tony Smith and Yarra Ranges Mayor Tony Stevenson walked through the site on 2 August.
The project included upgraded unisex change rooms, a gym, canteen, recreation room and greater storage capacity. MADCOW president Aimee te Boekhorst said the facility would benefit the entire community. “It is a wonderful outcome for our community, not just our sporting clubs," she said. "It’s a great place for them, but it’s also a great place for the whole community to use. “We’ve been really excited about it coming for a long time and it’s amazing to see it here completed.” As well as being a hub for the community to use, the new pavilion will support the development of football for women and be a place that welcomes all ages, abilities and genders.
Senior women’s football team coach Lucas Jurey said the old and new facilities were “chalk and cheese”. “It’s provided a really safe space for the girls playing football up here, a meeting place for our girls where they can hang around with their mates and make some news friend and join a community that they probably haven’t had for a while,” he said. “It’s chalk and cheese - the old dingy change room was falling apart and often smelt pretty bad. “This new one just makes it a more comfortable place to be around. "People are sticking around, we’re getting more people here, so you’re going to attract new footballers, new netballers and new supporters to the club.”
Fifteen Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes travelled to Lake Dewar in Myrniong, near Ballarat, for the Little Athletics Victoria State Cross Country Championships. Outstanding performances from all of the club's athletes capped off its season superbly. Special mentions went to Zoe Clarke for winning her under-10 girls race to retain her title from last year, and Mia Strudley for a wellrun second place in the under-15 girls 3000m race. Final results are - Bradley Walker 42nd 2km 8:40, Scarlett Wilson 16th 2km 8:34, Mitch Pointon 18th 1.5km 5:28, Zoe Clarke GOLD 1.5km 5:14, Willow Naismith 5th 1.5km 5:52, Emily Fiedler 18th 1.5km 6:20, Tori Kincaid 25th 1.5km 6:31, Caitlyn Pointon 44th 1.5km 7:19, Finn Rossthorn 30th 1.5km 5:56, Tait Whelan 48th 1.5km 6:26, Mia Strudley SILVER 3km 10:36, Jemima Wilson 4th 3km 11:21, Indigo Linde 6th 3km 11:26, Ky Harris 18th 3km 11:30, Bailey van Bert 22nd 3km 11:35. It will be a busy weekend of cross country next weekend as the club travels to Cockatoo for the annual Cockatoo Hills Challenge. Club seniors will be chasing the mud at Cruden Farm at round 8 of XCR. The club welcomes all athletes of any age or ability. For information on training, how to join or trial, photos, results and updated news, visit yarrarangesathletics.org.au.
Hawks flying in finals, facing the strength Footy finals fever is upon the Monbulk Junior Football club, with both the under-14 girls and under-16 boys playing strong opponents. The Hawkettes' close loss and the boys' close win made for exciting spectating. Under-14 girls Mount Evelyn 5.8.38 d Monbulk 4.7.31 The Hawkettes didn't get over the line, but the result and game day pressure gave the side the confidence to know they could match Mount Evelyn to be competitive. A little fine tuning in their game structures and another game under their belt will put the Hawkettes in great stead for the rest of the finals. Next week they'll fight to win a semi-final. Under-16 boys Monbulk 8.7.55 d Olinda Ferny-Creek 7.2.44 The boys put in a fantastic effort in a clash that was tough and close all day. The group worked hard all game for a close win and to earn a week off.

A fitting end to a classic By Nick Creely It took a moment of sheer brilliance to separate two sides that refused to let the foot off the throat all day. Narre Warren and Wandin could barely be split in an engrossing AFL Outer East Premier Division blockbuster at the Kennel on Saturday, with a magic goal from Peter Gentile in the dying seconds sealing the four points for the Magpies, 18.21 (129) to 19.8 (122). Gentile used all of his class to kicking a goal in mid-air from the goal square over his head with only seconds to play, ending a battle which had so many twists and turns of momentum. The Magpies got the hot start away from home to silence the vocal home crowd, with two beautiful running goals from Trent Cody within a few minutes of each other getting the visitors off to the perfect start. Maximising on their elite pressure through the midfield, and with the likes of Trent Cody, Brad Scalzo, Dylan Quirk and Nathan Foote controlling possession and getting the ball moving, the Magpies looked ominous when the ball went forward, with Daniel Jackson marking everything and kicking the ball beautifully. But Dogs skipper Justin Van Unen showcased some brilliance of his own to stem the bleeding nearing quarter time with a lovely checkside goal, before Clinton Johnston slotted a goal after the quarter time siren to draw the margin back to just 23. The Dogs started the second well, with Rohan Heasley capitalising on some excellent forward pressure, before the Magpies once again steadied to regain control. Van Unen, however, kicked a pearler from the pocket after the half-time siren to give the Dogs plenty of momentum heading into the final siren, and with confidence they could overrun the Magpies on their home fortress.
Emerald marquee man Stephen Milne celebrates a goal for the Bombers. And signs were looking worrying for Matt Shinners’ side, with the Dogs going absolutely bersek in the third quarter, kicking 10 goals to three and opening up a three goal lead with some of the most electric footy of the year, with Van Unen continuing to create serious headaches on his way to seven majors. The Magpies clawed its way back, re-discovering some of its spark from the first half, with veteran Col McNamara’s set-shot putting them back in front midway through the final term, before a Patrick Hodgett soccer only seconds later saw the Dogs reclaim the lead. With no indication of which way the con-

test was going to go, the little contests - whether it be the stoppages, or the ability to just stick marks and tackles - become vital, and young gun Tom Miller came to the fore for the visitors, showcasing great composure as his side once again took the lead. But Hodgett had other ideas, sneaking another through the big sticks to create a threepoint lead, and when Michael Collins couldn’t quite convert his set-shot only seconds later, it appeared as if the Dogs - with the home crowd in toe - would hold on as the clock shot past 30 minutes. It wasn’t until Gentile’s piece of magic that
sealed the result, with the siren going shortly after the crafty forward’s freakish match winner, in one of the most entertaining games of local footy in recent memory. For the Magpies, veteran Michael Collins was absolutely sublime once more, while fellow great Col McNamara and Dan Jackson (six goals) had moments that will be talked about in the lead up to the finals. While for the Dogs, Van Unen’s seven goals were remarkable, Tom Hinds was excellent, while Hodgett’s last quarter almost got the home side over the line. In the remaining matches across the round, Cranbourne did what they needed to for their finals chances at home against Healesville, 17.17 (120) to 4.8 (32), Beaconsfield found a bit of spark with a comfortable win against Upwey Tecoma, 17.22 (124) to 3.5 (23), while Berwick banked a vital win on the road against Woori Yallock, 15.13 (103) to 5.9 (39). In Division 1, the presence of former St Kilda great Stephen Milne was enough for Emerald to upset Doveton at home in front of a monster crowd, 12.11 (83) to 10.11 (71). Despite the Doves never really going away, the Bombers always looked like the better side on the day, with Milne slotting two and getting the crowd up and about. The Doves came back hard - particularly in the final half - but couldn’t quite find enough momentum to force its way over the line. And in the remaining match in what was a split round, Mount Evelyn stormed home from a six-goal deficit at home against Officer to win comfortably at home, 14.12 (96) to 12.13 (85). In Division 2, Seville got the better of Gembrook Cockatoo, but the margin could have been bigger if not for inaccuracy, 13.21 (99) to 7.9 (51). The Brookers couldn’t reel the margin in after conceding seven second term goals, but battled the game out well to square up the final half.
