Berwick is a great place t With its leafy village feel, great schools, outstanding health care, bountiful cafes and restaurants and improving transport links it is no wonder Berwick is a sought after postcode. Despite an explosion in population since the late 1990s, Berwick has retained its air of old-world charm thanks to its many heritage homes, its grand avenue of honour at the eastern approach to the village and the historic High Street with Tudor shops, original post office, mechanics institute, inn and court house. The first European settler in the Berwick area is generally regarded to be Terence O’Connor who took up the Cardinia Creek lease in 1838. Some sources however credit Captain Robert Gardiner as being the first European settler. Captain Gardiner called his run Berwick after his home town of Berwick upon Tweed in England and thus the surrounding district was also known as Berwick. Many settlers soon followed and the township of Berwick was surveyed by Robert Hoddle at around 1852. By the 1890s the town was well established with a population of over six hundred. Today Berwick is home to more than 47,000 people. Real Estate professionals say Berwick is hot property with a median sales price of $660,000. Investors are also drawn to the area, with median rent hovering at $410 per week and an investment yield of 3.2 per cent, above the metro average of 3 per cent. According to the Real Estate Institute of Victoria 87.9 per cent of dwellings in Berwick are houses, 10.9 per cent are semi-detached and 1.2 per cent are flats or units. To service the growing population, millions are being poured into new education and health care facilities. In 2018 St John of God opened a new $120 million hospital in Kangan Drive. The state-of-

the-art hospital offers a new maternity unit, eight operating theatres, two endoscopy theatres, a dedicated cardiac unit and the first intensive care unit for the region. Kangan Drive is an education and health hub, home to Casey Hospital, Chisholm Institute and the new Casey Tech School. A partnership between the State Government, Chisholm Institute, industry and schools, the

tian College and St Francis Xavier. Berwick is also well serviced by governmentand a schools such as Berwick College and Timbar-cloth ra P-9 College as well as numerous primarysigne schools. ily Shopping and dining Berwick’s historic village is home to a stylishfr boutiques, home wares stores, bakeries, cafesscar son and restaurants.

Berwick is well known as a foodie hub thanks to its many cafes, restaurants and bars, offering food from across the globe. Parks and gardens One of Berwick’s primary attractions is Wilson Botanic Park. The 39 hectare site was originally established as a basalt quarry in 1859 and it operated until 1979. Since then, ongoing redevel-

opment has seen it evolve into an oasis of flora and birdlife with lakes, picnic areas and scenic walking trails with lookouts. Pioneers Park in Peel Street was officially opened in October 2005 on the site of the Old Berwick Primary school, while Akoonah Park is situated on the eastern edge of Berwick. The 11 hectare park is home to a popular weekly market and the annual Berwick Agricultural Show.

A slice of the Big Apple Customers get more than just a haircut or a shave at New York Barbers, they get the full Big Apple experience. The popular barber and coffee shop is a little slice of New York in the heart of Berwick. New York Barbers is the vision of owner Mario Fallace. Mario’s love for the Big Apple is evident in the carefully curated space which includes arresting photographs of iconic New York landscapes. In one image a yellow cab appears to surge from the back wall onto the floor tiles which look like a New York pavement. One corner of the barbers is devoted to the history of the craft with framed antique cut throat razors and an old-style barber’s chair that Mario believes is more than 100 years old. Mario describes New York Barbers as an old school barber shop with a modern fusion. “When I decided originally to open a barbers it would have been very easy to paint a white wall and put in chairs and mirrors and call it a barbers shop,“ explained Mario. “But I got to thinking about barbering and how big it was in the 1920s through to the 1960s in New York. At that time there was a barber on every corner. That’s why I wanted to have a New York inspired feel and hence why we became the New York Barbers. “When people walk into here I want them to feel like they are in New York, that they are in America.“ Mario’s challenge was to provide not only his customers, but also their friends, partners and children, with a memorable visual experience. He has certainly achieved that. A visit to New York Barbers is an immersive experience, right down to the music which has been chosen to evoke America in the 60s through to the 80s.

Not only do our midwives deliver babies safely, they deliver compassionate maternity care with respect, expertise, experience, knowledge and excellence.

Mario hopes to soon also serve hot dogs after a recent tasting trip to New York. His says his team of barbers are like family. “The team is awesome. They are well experienced in all aspects of barbering from close shaves, to modern fades. It’s about looking after men. It’s not so much about pampering for men but about presentation and grooming. Right now men in this area are appreciative

that there is a place for them to go to.“ Mario has been a prominent figure in the Berwick business community for more than 23 years, which was when he opened his first salon, Tomars Hairdressing in Gloucester Avenue. These days he moves between the two businesses, liaising with staff, greeting loyal customers and attending to the grooming of his male clientele at New York Barbers or his female clientele at Tomars himself. “Business is all about consistency, the consistent nature of what you do and believing in

it. I believe it’s important to make sure all your people consistently do what you do. “I am really proud of my team because that is exactly what they do. You can sit any chair in New York Barbers and know you will get the same quality service.“ New York Barbers is open Monday to Wednesday 8am until 5.30pm, Thursday to Friday 8am until 6.30pm and Saturday 7am until 3.30pm at 30 Adams Lane. A gem of a milestone The elder statesman of the Berwick business community Jim Drysale celebrated his 80th birthday on 27 July. As he has since 1984, Jim opened the shop for business as usual and was delighted by the many well wishes from customers, including several renditions of ’Happy Birthday’. The family marked the occasion with a party at the Kalorama Community Centre. Jim was escorted to the event in a 1952 Riley, the same model car he and Kay once owned but sold in the 1980s. Jim is a master jeweller who has been

honing his craft since 1956 when he started in the industry as a 17 year old apprentice. “He spent a year in his youth thinking he might be a panel beater, but he has always been a jeweller,“ explained Kay. The couple moved their business from Noble Park to Berwick in 1984, occupying a shop previously devoted to clock making. Thirty five years later Drysdale’s Berwick Village Jewellery is an institution. The couple’s adult son Raymond is also a familiar site at the shop and around Berwick, cheerily greeting the many people who know him. Jim and Kay also have a

daughter and two grandchildren. As for retirement, Kay and Jim have no firm plans. “We still enjoy it, “said Kay. “The regulars say ’You can’t retire yet, Jim’.“ However, Kay says they would welcome enquiries from qualified jewellers interested in helping Jim ease into retirement.

High steaks MPD is an award-winning shrine to the perfect steak. The restaurant’s name is a nod to New York’s famous Meatpacking District and the venue is as glamorous, sexy and fun as the city itself, promising diners an experience to remember. Judges of the AHA awards certainly found MPD memorable, awarding it Best Hotel Restaurant in 2018. The team in the busy MPD kitchen are world-class offering a selection of 9 steaks, from regular to more unusual cuts of beef all prepared over a wood fired grill. Venue manager Marcus Fabian said MPD sources the majority of its beef from local suppliers like O’Connor Beef and Vic’s Premium Quality Meat and also the big guns like Sher Wagyu and Cape Grim. The restaurant’s lamb comes from Flinders Island, while diners not in the mood for steak can enjoy fish or poultry while vegetarians will also be satisfied with special menu selections. Tucked away at the back of Zagames Hotel,

guests enter MPD through a narrow hallway which feels like you’re walking through a grill. The dining space features tones of charcoal and contrasting light and dark woods, offset by white and red neon, copper finishes, leather booths and cow hides. The front bar is finished in blue leather. The wine list favours Victorian and Australian wines but also offers Argentinian, French, Italian and Spanish varietals. The collection is stored in a glass encased climate controlled ‘floating’ wine cellar, raised three metres above the ground. Downstairs MPD offers an extensive selection of quality bourbons and scotches, while the second mezzanine feels like an old saloon bar. Happy hour is from 4pm-6pm Tuesday to Sunday where guests can purchase $12 cocktails, $6 wines and beers and $5 snacks. MPD also offers a special $50 pp three course lunch. The venue is open Tuesday to Sunday from 5.30pm for dinner and 12pm3pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday for lunch.

For any shopper trying to track down designer products at an affordable price, Ruby Wednesday is the place to go. The boutique shop on High Street, Berwick offers a wide range of preloved designer clothing, handbags, shoes, jewellery and brand new designer homewares that won’t cost you an arm and a leg. Brands such as Samantha Wills, Mimco, Michael Kors and Oroton grace the pitch black walls of the industrial-styled shop, which shop owner Kim Richards said has women searching for a spot in the car park. “If people are after something different, not that everyone has, my shop is the place to go,” she said. The shop has been open for seven weeks and Ms Richards has noticed that middle-aged women searching for homewares are the most common customers. “I thought it was going to be younger ones, but there have been more middle-aged wom-

en,” she said. “I’m in that age group so my taste might cater to that. “Homewares are definitely pulling people in the door ... the fake plants have been incredible.” Ms Richards said she takes pride in creating a unique shop that is easy for customers to navigate. “I like everything to be displayed beautifully, not just placed,” she said. “It’s got a lot of stuff in it but it’s not cluttered...I want every piece to impress people.” Despite her daughter running the shop while she works in real estate, Ms Richards said she likes to get down a couple of times a week to re-arrange displays and keep the shop looking tidy. She said that once word gets out about her shop some more, she’ll look to expand it’s social media presence and popularity.

Three decades of success By Danielle Kutchel Haileybury College Berwick has garnered a reputation for academic rigour and extracurricular success, but its leaders say they are creating so much more: well-rounded young people with the ability to communicate well, get along with others and think critically about their world. Now entering its 30th year, the campus has expanded with more than 800 students now learning across 27 hectares; but the culture of Haileybury has endured according to middle school science teacher Gary Shiell who has worked at the school since it opened 30 years ago. "It still has that sense of community ... so while the school has grown in size and population and building structure, that sense of community is something that's been really constant throughout." Mr Shiell was one of those who joined the visionary first head of campus, John Twist, who ingrained community spirit in the school's families, students and staff. There are other points of difference too: Haileybury is known for its small class sizes of between 15 and 22, an approach that head of campus Jeanette Rawlings says allows students to have a voice. Another point of difference is the high calibre of staff, committed to the best in education. A third is the school's parallel education model. From early learning to year five students learn in coeducational classrooms, but from year five onwards boys and girls are separated -except for academic extension classes, assemblies, recess and lunch, where the genders mix freely to echo the real world. Mr Shiell can still recall "the day the first carload of girls pulled up out the front with their berets." "The school from that day had changed so much for the better by having the girls arrive," he says. This 'best of both worlds' approach has allowed the school to be designed around its students, with facilities purpose-built for each gender. Another major change occurred when a pre-senior program was established at the Berwick campus, allowing students to remain on site rather than shifting to the Keysborough campus to finish their high school years. Haileybury Berwick has maintained its academic record over the years, but Ms Rawlings says the school provides so much more than that. "We are certainly known for our academic excellence, but we are also known for our social justice, enterprise and international outlook as well because we want young people to have a broad outlook." Students are given myriad opportunities to try their hand at something new across many curriculum areas. Recently, six senior school students earned their drone licences, while a

Haileybury College Berwick has developed a reputation as a school of choice over the past 30 years. group of year eight students travelled to NASA. Others were involved in the Salvation Army's Red Shield Appeal. "We want them to be outward looking, rather than inwards, and to realise they need to make a contribution to their community and to the world more broadly," Ms Rawlings says. The focus is always on the student at Haileybury Berwick, which has become a school of choice for many families in the area. Last year, the school was named Australian School of the Year in 2018, an achievement the whole school community is proud of. And while no major event is planned for the campus' 30th birthday, Ms Rawlings says every day is a celebration at Haileybury. "We try to be very warm, inclusive place where everyone is welcome," she says. Find out more about Haileybury at its upcoming School Tour, on Saturday 24 August. Tyanna picked St Francis Xavier Year 11 student Tyanna Smith has been selected in the 2019 AFLW Under 18 All Australian Team. To make Tyanna's achievement even more remarkable, she has been selected and as underage player. Tyanna started playing footy when she was 7 with the boys but only played 1 year, then I took up an opportunity in basketball. "I started playing again locally for Beaconsfield under 18 girls 3 years ago. This led to being selected to play for the Dandenong Stingrays and then the Vic Country under 18 team this year as a bottom-ager," Tyanna explained. "I received a call from the Vic country coach last week informing me that I had been named in the All Australian under 18 team. Although I felt I played well in the national championships in Queensland, it came as a massive shock and I feel extremely honoured and humbled about being selected. "Due to my age I hope to be selected in the Vic country team again next year and ultimately get drafted into an AFLW team at the end of next year." Principal Vincent Feeney congratulated Tyanna on her selection. "St Francis Xavier College are so proud of Tyanna, she has worked extremely hard to achieve her dreams," Mr Feeney said.

Top class teaching One of the great strengths of the St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar School community is the tremendous quality and calibre of the teaching staff who work with students to guide and nurture them to achieve their very best. As a Senior Boys Campus, the school is a member of the International Boys School Coalition (IBSC), the peak body for education and research in the areas of teaching and learning for boys. This organisation provides a vital link between Berwick Grammar School and others, enabling staff to both access and participate in the latest research and thinking about how to best teach boys. Two school leaders, Lauren Cook and Helen McDonald, have been selected from high quality candidates to participate in recent research projects which both have tangible implications for the work occurring with boys. Mrs McDonald, the Director of Student Growth, has embarked on a 12 month research journey, exploring how the successful project based learning curriculum of the 21C program may be implemented at senior levels. The outcomes of this research will have significant outcomes for the school’s teaching and learning programs at all levels as staff consider how to best engage students with learning, grounded in real life challenges and obstacles. Ms Cook, Head of Senior Boys, recently presented the outcomes of her 12 month research project into the promotion of positive models of masculinity through story and narrative. A further indication of Ms Cook’s expertise in this area was provided when she presented a workshop on The Growing Good Men Project at Berwick Grammar School. In recognition of her ongoing leadership in

Lauren Cook with Berwick Grammar School captains Matthew and Darcy. education, Ms Cook has been awarded a prestigious honour in being named as one of The Australian Council of Educators New Voices in Educational Leadership Scholars. This award

Hillcrest’s hard knock life Hillcrest Christian College students dazzled crowds over three glorious nights, when they performed the much-loved Broadway musical 'Annie'. From Thursday 1 until Saturday 3 August students passionately gave their all in portraying their characters. The actors were beautifully cast from year levels 7-12, with the students performing well beyond their years. 'Sandy' the dog also made a few appearances during the show much to the audience's delight! Students have been rehearsing since the 2018 Christmas holidays, also giving up much of their time after school and on weekends. On the nights audiences were treated to the unforgettable songs and the determination of Annie as she went from rags to riches. Set amidst the mire of The Great Depression of the 1930s, Annie tells the story of a spunky young orphan girl, determined to find

her parents, who abandoned her as an infant on the steps of The New York City Municipal Orphanage. "The story of Annie is a wonderful picture of God’s heart towards each of His children", commented Production Director Christopher Bishop. "Annie is born into harsh circumstances and suffers under the tyranny of the cruel, embittered orphanage matron ‘Miss Hannigan’. She longs to be freed from her oppression into the home of a loving family. In the Bible, Galatians 4:4-7, we hear about God sending His Son to redeem humankind from their oppression under the law, and adopting them as His own children. “It is our hope and prayer that our students and community were encouraged by this musical about God’s loving nature to rescue us from fear, into a life of freedom through faith in Jesus. "Congratulations to all those involved as it was truly a professional and unforgettable performance."

The award takes into account the number of recommendations received and the number of sales made by the office in the last 12 month period - and Harcourts Berwick has dominated both categories for two years in a row. It's a testament to the agency's commitment to excellence in all that they do, from the administration staff to the property management and sales teams. Brad Nicholls, principal of Harcourts Berwick, says there is a history of stability within his team, all of whom are dedicated to their role rather than chasing the next deal. "Personnel can change, but the model stays the same. Staff understand our expectations: our standards are high, it's just how we do things," he said. Mr Nicholls says there is never a dull day in real estate, making it a fun profession to be a part of. "It's talking to people, trying to provide a solution or strategy by which they can move from a situation which is currently, for whatever reason, untenable." The Harcourts point of difference is that they listen to clients and take into account their wants, needs and desires, tailoring a strategy that they can have some input into. Mr Nicholls uses a cricket analogy to explain the Harcourts Berwick perspective. "We're more the Steve Smith style - we

A personal touch Berwick Business Group President and former Victorian MP, Tammy Lobato, created her Wig and Hairloss Centre as a result of her experience with hair loss and needing to wear wigs for 40 years. When Tammy was just three years old she lost all of her hair to Alopecia - an autoimmune disease triggered by stress. Tammy has experienced every wig retailer in search of realistic quality products and high-level service. The majority of her visits to wig stores resulted in disappointment. Five years ago she decided to create the experience and environment she felt she deserved so that her clients can enjoy a better standard than she did.

At Tammy Lobato Wigs in Gloucester Avenue, Tammy says she and her staff are always able to relate, understand and empathise with clients because they have all experienced hair loss. Tammy deliberately tucked her store away in Gloucester Square to protect clients’ privacy. Hair loss is caused by many factors, including Alopecia and other autoimmune diseases such as Lupus or PCOS, as a result of chemotherapy, genetic or stress-related hair thinning, hormonal (post-pregnancy or menopause), a reaction to medication and nutritional deficiency. Tammy said she knows first hand how im-

portant it is to have access to high-quality realistic wigs and hairpieces. “They can be the difference between going and not going to a wedding or a child’s graduation. It can be the difference between going or not being able to go to work,” she said. “Wigs also create anonymity for people undergoing treatment who don’t want the world to know their business.” For further information, call Tammy on 9796 2730. New faces at Ray White Debbie Brettoner and Matt Doyle, two of the highest performing agents in Melbourne’s South-East, have made the move to Ray White and will be joining Eric Zhang as directors of Ray White Berwick. With a combined eight years' experience in the real estate industry, this mother and son duo believe their move to Ray White was the natural step in reaching that next level of growth. “The Ray White brand is synonymous with excellence and we couldn’t pass up this opportunity to join Australia’s largest real estate group,” Ms Brettoner said. “The support we’ve already received from the corporate team, as well as the brand recognition is outstanding. And it’s still a family owned business which reflects well on what we’d like to portray in our own business,” Mr

Having previously owned and worked in one of Berwick’s most well known restaurants, Mr Doyle has benefitted from the strong relationships he’s built with the local community. “I know what’s happening in my local area and I know the community, so being able to bring my strongest skill set into real estate is extremely beneficial,” he said. Ms Brettoner has lived and worked in Berwick for over 30 years and over this time has accumulated superior market knowledge. Both Ms Brettoner and Mr Doyle have been recognised by Rate My Agent as the number one and number three most recommended agents in Berwick, respectively. Berwick is a blessing for family life Jo-Anne Gear loves her adopted home town of Berwick. The former fashion designer and model moved to Berwick with her husband, Ron Weinzierl, eight and half years ago from inner Melbourne. “My husband’s business interests and family were based in and near Berwick, and as we had a toddler at the time and were thinking about expanding our family, we thought Berwick was a good place to settle in,“ Jo-Anne explained. Originally an Adelaide girl, Jo-Anne loves Berwick’s “small, historical town“ feel. “It has a village-like feel and lovely sense of community. It is a great place to raise a family, with excellent schools, a university and TAFE. There is also a new hospital and a wonderful choice of dance schools and sporting clubs,“ Jo said. Her favourite places include many of the Berwick cafes that serve healthy juices, gluten and sugar free treats and coffee. For stylish drinks and dinner she loves a night out at MPD Steak Kitchen. “MPD is a favourite of mine, with its stunning interior, delicious menu and cocktails. It has brought some Melbourne city style to Berwick.

“It always surprises me when I meet someone in Berwick who is yet to experience MPD! My response is always “You must go!” For a takeaway meal, the family loves pasta - “a great home-cooked meal when I don’t feel like cooking!“ Jo-Anne tries to shop locally as much as possible frequenting many of the High Street boutiques and keeping her eye open for luxe candles, art and coastal fashion. She also buys fresh flowers locally and presents for family and friends from Berwick’s many gift shops. She and Ron are pleased to be raising their two girls, Daisy, 10, and Kitty, 6, in a town which is friendly, safe and family-orientated. “Every Sunday morning we walk together and choose one of the cafes to have breakfast and the all-important coffee,“ she explained. “My husband and I keep our fitness up by training at BFirm personal training studio - the trainers are friendly, knowledgeable and committed to helping us achieve our fitness goals.“ The family also loves spending time exploring Wilson Botanical Gardens which Jo describes as “a beautiful spot for a run or walk, and a great place to take the children“.

A serial "violent" offender has been jailed for up to four-and-a-half years over a brutal bashing and robbery at gunpoint of a driver in Noble Park. Saipele Mataafa, 22, was in the front passenger seat of a stolen Holden Commodore, which pulled up beside the victim's parked Camry in Shirley Street about 1am on 31 July 2018, the Victorian County Court heard. The Commodore driver wound down the window and pointed a black handgun at the victim, who had been talking to friends on his phone. The co-offender demanded money from the victim. Mataafa, who had previously worked for a Narre Warren pallets company, ran across and punched the victim's head and face while the victim was still seated. The victim's $1300 iPhone was grabbed from his hand. Mataafa pulled him out of the car and punched him in the face. Mataafa demanded money from the fallen victim and searched through the Camry. A victim's housemate arrived on the scene, and was threatened by the co-offender's handgun. Both offenders, laughing, drove away with the stolen phone. Mataafa pleaded guilty to what Judge Lisa Hannan regarded as "serious" examples of armed robbery and assault. In sentencing on 6 August, Judge Hannan noted the use of a handgun, in company, in a public street at night against a vulnerable victim who was alone. Mataafa had said that at the time he'd consumed 1 gram of ice and 16 stubbies of beer. He had also been recently released on youth

parole, Judge Hannan said. His "disturbing" and "numerous" criminal record of violence included convictions for recklessly causing injury, assaulting an emergency worker on duty and aggravated burglary. He had been involved in a violent incident in remand in November, leading to four months in solitary confinement, the court heard. He was neither deterred nor rehabilitated by past sentences including a community corrections order and detention in a youth training centre, Judge Hannan said. Several recent close-family tragedies had a "significant impact" on a depressed Mataafa, she noted. According to a clinical psychologist, his offending was partially caused by poor impulse control as part of a previously undiagnosed ADHD condition. Anger management, grief counselling and substance-abuse support were recommended. He'd told the psychologist that he had been at times homeless, immersed in a "drug party scene" and "fighting on the streets". With his "crew", he learnt that he had the capacity to hurt others. He "got violent". Judge Hannan said the still youthful Mataafa's rehabilitation prospects were "no more than guarded" but was the best protection for the community in the future. "The reality is you will need substantial assistance to make what I think will be a challenging transition back in the community." His jail term includes a minimum nonparole period of three years. He had already served 355 days in custody. He was ordered to compensate the victim for the stolen phone. The co-offender had his charges withdrawn by the prosecution.

IN BRIEF

Noisy neighbours? No problem By Jessica Anstice A new app has been invented for residents to complain about noisy neighbours.'The Noise App' simply allows you to dob your neighbours in, as often as you want. The City of Casey has been trialling the app since January. "Council will evaluate the effectiveness of this, including the user experience, to determine if we will continue using it," City of Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon said. "Between January and 30 June 2019, we have had 104 noise cases reported to council via the app, 414 recordings and 157 public users. "Council investigates certain types of noise complaints, such as those relating to dogs barking and the use of loud equipment during certain times, however it cannot investigate matters such as loud voices or shouting." Once the application is downloaded to a mobile device, it can be used to record the noise in 30 second grabs. The recording captures the date, time and location before the file is sent directly to council's database. Once the information is submitted, council is notified on a desktop version of the app and via email. "This app allows us to gain an accurate snapshot of the noise issue in question and assists officers to make quicker decisions about the need for further investigation, or to close the matter off," Cr Stapledon said. "It also replaces 'paper diaries' that officers previously used to capture this type of information. "This technology is designed to help make

A noisy Narre Warren nightclub has been fined $8060 for exceeding noise regulations. Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) received a number of noise complaints about Empire and installed a noise logger in February. The logger, which was located within a residential area some 250 metres away, recorded thumping, low frequency noise up to seven decibels above the day/evening noise limit and up to 21 decibels above the night noise limit of 51dBZ. As decibels are a logarithmic scale, an increase of 10dBZ is perceived by the ear as a doubling of the loudness of a sound. EPA issued Empire a Pollution Abatement Notice and the company installed noise controls but when EPA undertook further moni-

A would-be car thief has been caught in Devon Meadows thanks to quick-thinking good Samaritans on Monday 5 August. Police say a man was attempting steal a car parked at a premises on the South Gippsland Highway about 2.45pm. It's alleged he attempted to drive off in the vehicle but stopped a short distance away before members of the public intervened and restrained him. Police and emergency services attended about 3.15pm and the man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries for observation and he is currently assisting. Police are investigating.

things easier for our residents, and is in keeping with our vision to become a Smart City and another move toward making Casey the most liveable city." As for Cardinia, the shire is aware of the app however it is not being trailed at present. "We are always looking for ways to improve

and streamline our services, and we are currently reviewing any opportunities to implement this application into our reporting process," a council spokesperson said. toring in April, the noise was at 62 decibels - 11 decibels above the night noise limit. EPA Southern Metropolitan Regional Manager Marleen Mathias said excessive noise could affect the health of residents. “Excessive noise can cause lack of sleep and lead to stress and anxiety, which is why noise regulations were created,” she said. “While the nightclub is located in a largely industrial area of Narre Warren, the noise was still recorded as excessive some 250m away which is a considerable distance. “It’s especially disappointing that even after installing sound measures, the club still exceeded the night-time limit.” Ms Mathias said Empire’s director stated the April exceedance was the result of a large music function where they later found out sound crews took measures to bypass the noise limiters.

“Empire has now installed limiters in the main room, installed acoustic insulation, stationed extra security on the doors to ensure they remain closed and taken measures to ensure the limiters can only be reached by venue management,” Ms Mathias said. “All promoters who book live acts at the venue must also acknowledge the noise limits.” Ms Mathias said EPA would continue to monitor the venue if there were any further reports. “People experiencing industrial noise disturbances are urged to report it to EPA’s pollution hotline on 1300 EPA VIC (1300 372 842),” she said. Under the Environment Protection Act 1970 and the Infringements Act 2008, Empire has the right to have the fine reviewed or have the matter determined by a court.

A Cranbourne elderly man has expressed his gratitude after two people paid for his shopping at Cranbourne Park shopping centre. Peter Heywood said he tried to pay for a couple of magazines at Woolworths last month but his gift card was rejected. He was told by the cashier there was a "glitch in the computer system" and he couldn't pay for the items. "The cashier said 'could you go have a coffee somewhere and come back a bit later?'" the 74-year-old said. While waiting in the food court for a few minutes, Mr Heywood said he was approached by two women carrying a bag who asked if it belonged to him. "She handed me the bag with the magazines and whatever else it was," he said. "I said I haven't paid for them. They said 'that's alright we've paid for them'. "They must have been behind me in the queue and they saw what happened," Mr Heywood added. Mr Heywood said he was most thankful for the pair whom he had never met before.

Man arrested for burglary A 38-year-old man has been arrested following a burglary in Berwick last week. A jewellery store on O'Shea Road was broken into about 2.40am on Thursday 1 August. Once inside the premises it's alleged the offender smashed a display cabinet and stole 48 men's rings. Information received led Detectives from Casey Crime Investigation Unit to execute a warrant in Berwick about 3pm the same day. They arrested the Berwick man and recovered the stolen property. He was charged with theft and burglary and bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 30 September.

NEWS

Josh’s fight for a cure Josh Thomas recently returned from his first round of treatment in the USA for a rare type of malformation of the blood vessels of his brain. Born with Vein of Galen Malformation (VGM), Josh's condition has deteriorated since 2010. His walking wasn't as smooth, his speech wasn't as clear and his memory was fading. But since return from the USA, his family have seen drastic improvement. On Saturday the 27 July, Josh, 22, was joined by many of his family and friends for a fundraiser. Hosted in the Casey City Church auditorium, the family were able to raise $5,000 for Josh's next round of treatment in the USA. The Institute of Neurological Recovery in Florida has been investigating the use of a comparatively new drug called Etanercept, developed for inflammatory diseases such as arthritis. The drug targets a protein called tumour

necrosis factor, which clusters around damaged areas of the brain and in excess can stop cell regrowth, and is now being used in America for stroke victims. This treatment has visibly helped in Joshua's case to remove the inflammation caused by the stroke and enabled Josh to function far better than he has been. After 18 months doctors have tried to stabilise him and halt the deterioration but nothing is working. His specialists believe the blood vessels in his brain are becoming tired and are struggling to keep up with the abnormal flow within his brain. VGM consists of abnormal connections between the arteries and deep draining veins, and lacks capillaries to slow the blood flow between arteries and veins. Without capillaries, blood is shunted directly into the vein at high output. This, in

turn, increases the workload of the heart. At the fundraiser night, Hope Australia Soccer Academy (HASA), a unique not-for-profit program also lent their support. Lamartine da Silva and Joaquim Santos Silva, soccer coaches from Brazil, each gave an encouraging word and donated a World Cup soccer jersey for the auction that helped raise money for Josh. Through the generous donations of time and funds, this family is now one step closer to their dream to get Joshua back to Florida for more life changing treatment in six to 12 months. A GoFundMe page has been set up by family. To donate, visit: https://au.gofundme.com/ fpvum-josh039s-journey.

Josh thanks the crowd for their generosity.

Train pain is ‘palpable’ By Brendan Rees

12387577-CG20-18

Opposition transport spokesman David Davis has accused the State Government of "washing their hands" of the "deteriorating" train performances on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines. It comes as data from Public Transport Victoria (PTV) revealed 16 per cent of trains failed to arrive on time on the Cranbourne line for the month of June. "There is a palpable frustration - people just want to rely on services," Mr Davis said. "The Premier and his minister have got to a get a grip on this performance." Mr Davis said the State Government failed to achieve acceptable performance targets on

the Cranbourne line every month in the past financial year which was "seriously impacting commuters." PTV figures also revealed 15.2 per cent of trains failed to arrive on time on the Pakenham line in June. A State Government spokesperson said they "won't take lectures from the Liberals," who they say stopped work on the Metro Tunnel and "failed to start a single major public transport project anywhere in Victoria last time they were in office." "We've invested more in improving services on the Cranbourne-Pakenham line than any Government in history - upgrading power and signalling, removing every level crossing between Dandenong and the city and ordering

65 new high capacity trains that will start running exclusively on the Dandenong corridor until the Metro Tunnel opens," the spokesperson said. "We're also duplicating the Cranbourne line to run more trains, and holding our operators to account through tougher contracts that put passengers first." Last month, a Metro spokesperson said more services were being run "than ever before" on the Cranbourne line. Signalling and upgrade works on the Metro Tunnel would also result in "more reliable journeys" on the Cranbourne line, the spokesman said. However, Mr Davis hit back saying any rail works were not taken into account with PTV's

performance data. "If there's a scheduled closure or schedule maintenance all of those are taken out and treated separately," he said. He added: "Since the Liberal Nationals left office, performance on the Cranbourne line has plunged 8.5 percentage points and on the Pakenham line by 6.2 percentage points under Daniel Andrews - performance is now shocking." The State Government says eight kilometres of single track from Dandenong to Cranbourne will be duplicated as part of a $750 million Cranbourne line upgrade - with construction to start in 2021 and finished by 2023.

RAY’S SAY

SOCIALLY SPEAKING On Monday 5 August a story was shared to the Cranbourne and Berwick Star News Facebook pages about the state opposition accusing the State Government of "washing their hands" of the poor train performances on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines. Here's how they responded: Sherrie Rossiter: I just don't want to spend two hours getting home from the footy because the trains run late on a service that runs every 20 minutes and that has no Cranbourne trains from Richmond which meant changing and waiting a further 20 minutes for one from Cranbourne. Ben Kotsch: I don't like Dan, but let's wait till both lines are finished before passing judgment. Gavin Balzary: The same opposition party that sold off the public transport system and the last time they were in government invested nothing into improving the system? Yeah, forgive me for not taking on board their thoughts on public transport. Mason Pelican Oneill: So it's going to be another four years before dual lines for Cranbourne. By that time the government will have built twice as many homes and will have to make Thompson's road eight lanes each way.

THE LOWDOWN

Winging her way to success The popular annual Casey Cardinia Women’s Business lunch is on again this Friday 9 August. While tickets may be sold out, the Gazette asked guest speaker Emma Isaacs to share some of her tips for the Casey Cardinia Region’s budding entrepreneurs, so that everyone can benefit from a little of Emma’s wisdom and experience. The theme of Emma’s address to Friday’s lunch is ’The magic of winging it’. You’re the CEO of a successful international business, so what do you mean ‘winging it’? I’ve always been someone who tries new things without knowing how they’re going to turn out. I dropped out of uni at 18, started my first business soon after and I bought Business Chicks when I was 24. I believe in trusting your gut and having a go! What advice can you share with people considering exploring their own entrepreneurial spirit? If you’ve got a dream or a goal, just take one small step at a time. What’s that quote about not needing to see the whole staircase? It’s true - it’s all about taking one step at a time. It’s also about getting your mindset right first though. This saying is also true: “If you believe you can, or can’t, you’re right.” I see a lot of women drown in self-doubt and a lack of selfconfidence. I believe in faking it til you make it and just having a go.

After three premierships in four years, Berwick are enjoying their most successful era. 185297 Picture: ROB CAREW

Berwick’s belter Berwick's intensity from the opening bounce until the final siren simply can't be matched. Their premiership victory against Narre Warren on Saturday - giving the club back-toback flags for just the second time in club history - was intense, finals footy laced with the right amount of class. After a third premiership in four years, the word 'dynasty' is deservingly being bandied around, and for good reason.

The club has a stranglehold over the southeast region - they're relentless, driven by success and are always chasing their next challenge. It's the cornerstone of all successful sporting clubs. While the weather may have been arctic in their 51-point win over Narre Warren, the Wickers put in a magical performance befitting of a champion team in the midst of a golden era. From the superstar Travis Tuck, who came to the club with a high expectation that has

now culminated with a best on ground medal in a grand final, to their champion skipper Madi Andrews, dynamic forward Harry Money, gun midfielder Bryce Rutherford and reliable defenders Jo West and Michael Riseley, the Wickers possess remarkable star power. "We pride ourselves on our relentless approach," Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman said in the aftermath of another premiership win. And as for Kemperman, he couldn't have a dreamt of a start to his senior coaching career

What’s the secret… to balancing work and family? In terms of the ‘juggle,’ I try and be as easy going as possible and I try and be kind to myself and don’t necessarily strive for the elusive ‘balance’. I know I have no balance and that’s the way life just is for now. I just try to understand my values and what’s important to me and focus on those things. For now, it’s about growing the business and it’s about spending time with my family. Everything else pales in comparison, but it won’t always be this way. My advice would be to learn to say no lots, and above all, be gentle and kind to yourself! Do you have a piece of advice that has served you well? My mum always taught me to be kind to everyone, and it’s a lesson that’s served me well. I always try and be polite, friendly and kind to everyone I meet. What is your life motto? ‘If it is to be, then it’s up to me’ is usually the one I fall back on. Who do you admire in business? I admire leaders like Richard Branson who continues to evolve and make business fun; and Diane von Furstenberg because she’s built a global brand and worked hard her whole life but is generous and kind at the same time.

Registration blitz on pools By Brendan Rees Casey Council will begin registering all backyard swimming pools and spas from 1 December this year as part of a State Government plan to prevent drownings. All councils will take charge of the mandatory registration scheme with all pool owners required to contact their council by April 14 next year and pay the small $37 registration fee.

Property owners will also be required to submit a current certificate of compliance for their pool or spa safety barrier. Pool and spa owners will be charged a maximum of $20 to lodge their inspection compliance certificates, a process they will be required to undertake just once every three years. Households will have 20 days to bring their pools into compliance if an inspector identi-

fies any safety concerns. The state government introduced this new scheme after numerous coronial investigations found that un-maintained and noncompliant pool barriers had contributed to the deaths of children in backyard pools. Swimming Pool and Spa Association of Victoria CEO, Chris Samartzis said: "As the peak body of the swimming pool and spa industry in Victoria, SPASA Victoria is delighted that

these new safety measures will increase the enjoyment of pool and spa ownership for all Victorians." Inspection certificates for all pools built before 1994 must be lodged by 30 October 2020. For pools built between 1994 and 2010, owners will have until 30 April 2021, with all pools built after 2010 requiring to be certified by 29 October 2021.

Mum’s moment of ‘shock’ as ticket win comes true A Berwick woman has confessed to being in a "mild state of shock" after claiming a $100,000 instant scratch-it win. Sharing her joy, the winner recounted how she initially thought she had only won $750. "I was scratching the ticket and initially thought I had scratched eight words which would have won me $750," she explained. "So I double checked each letter and then wrote out each word that I had scratched off and thought I had won $10,000. The woman purchased her $5 crosswords instant Scratch-Its ticket ticket at Parkhill Berwick News and Lotto in Berwick. "I was so excited! I went into the office the next day to claim the prize and when I got there I told the lady behind the counter I originally thought I had only won $750," she said. "She kind of looked at me funny and said 'you definitely didn't win the amount you think'. "That's when she told me I had actually won $100,000! I couldn't believe it! I was in such shock.

When asked how she celebrated the windfall, the happy woman revealed she'd already had her adult children around to celebrate. "I just couldn't wait to tell them so I had them all over so I could let them know the exciting news!" she said. "When I told them they were in happy tears. I wasn't too far behind them. "We cracked open a bottle of champagne and celebrated together!" The family woman revealed the win was "truly life-changing" and would allow her to realise her long-held dream of travelling. Parkhill Berwick News and Lotto team member Moira Parker said it was a thrill to know one of their regular customers had scored a top prize. "We were absolutely flabbergasted when we found out we'd sold another top prize winning Instant Scratch-Its!" she said. "This is the second $5 Crosswords top prize we've sold here. We like to think of ourselves as a bit of a lucky store for scratchies.

Liver gift means the world By Danielle Kutchel Mamdouh Youssef knows all too well how lifechanging organ donations can be. The Cranbourne resident was the recipient of a liver transplant in 2012. The gift has allowed him to move forward in life, with a new career and a daughter. In 2011, he became life-threateningly sick and ended up in a coma in Dandenong Hospital. Specialists told him his liver was no longer functioning and he was moved to the Austin, where he waited until a donor became available. Mamdouh describes the donated liver as "a gift from God". "It means a lot - it means life for my family, my daughter, who came two years after the transplant." Cranbourne is leading the way in organ donation in Victoria.

Left to right: Mamdouh Youssef, his wife Marian and daughter Mirabel. Data provided by DonateLife Victoria shows that postcode 3977 had more people register on the Australian Organ Donor Register in 2018 than any other postcode in Victoria A total of 769 Cranbourne residents recorded their intention to become organ and tissue donors last year.

DonateLife Victoria State Medical Director Dr Rohit D'Costa thanked the residents of Cranbourne for joining the Australian Organ Donor Register. "This is a fantastic effort by the residents of Cranbourne, and I encourage adults across Victoria to follow their lead," Dr D'Costa said. "Registering your decision about organ and tissue donation - and talking to your family is important as it leaves no doubt about your wishes, should the worst happen. Whether your decision about organ donation is a 'yes' or 'no', it's important that you make it known." There are currently 1551 Australians waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. DonateLife Week runs from 28 July to 4 August, and the Rotary Club of Cranbourne has joined to call to encourage residents to sign up to be an organ donor. Rotary is asking people to find their 'plus one', a colleague, neighbour, teammate or oth-

er relatives who can be encouraged to register to be an organ and tissue donor too. "Organ and tissue donation is the ultimate gift. You can save and improve the lives of many people as an organ and tissue donor," said Garry Luxford, President of the Rotary Club of Cranbourne. Five years on from his transplant, Mr Youssef is loving life with his wife and daughter, a new house and a new job as a bus driver. He wishes he could know the name of his organ donor so he could lay a flower on his grave to say thankyou. While he himself is unable to donate organs or even blood, to return the favour, Mr Youssef's wife has since signed up to become a donor. "She knows the experience and how much it means," he said. "It gives life for other people when they need it."

Kelly’s food charity calls for council understanding By Mitchell Clarke Kelly Warren and her family have been providing free food and clothes to those in need for over two years but the City of Casey has told them it’s time to move on and operate elsewhere. Operating out of their Narre Warren carport, Ms Warren has built strong connections with the number of people who utilise her service, stating it’s something she’s done for years and would hate for it to cease now. “These are families, mothers with children, pensioners, they’re normal people, I would love to keep this local because I just love this community,” Ms Warren said. “That’s why I don’t want to move, these peo-

ple come from public transport, they catch a bus here, and I don’t want to let them down.” But she might be left with no choice, being forced to scope out the suitability of other locations, meaning the 100 odd people who rely on her service will be left looking for other alternatives to put a meal on their tables. “Look, if there’s a space nearby, we’d be crazy not to take it,” she explained. “I’d just love to have a council that supported us and our work.” In a statement, the City of Casey said they appreciated the assistance that Bk 2 Basics provides to vulnerable members of our community. But despite this, they say conducting warehousing and distribution services from a

residential premise which does not meet the Casey Planning Scheme requirements. “Planning Officers have therefore requested the organisation seek alternative premises to undertake their activities from,” the statement read. “The City of Casey provided an additional two months (until 29 August) from the original notice advising Ms Warren that she is in breach of planning regulations, for Bk 2 Basics to seek an alternative location.” There had been rumours circling that Ms Warren’s charity was causing disharmony among her neighbours, leading to complaints to council, however she was quick to shut down the speculations. “I love where we live and I love our neigh-

bours, I wouldn’t move from here - it’s not often you have the relationship that I have with them,” she said. All of her neighbours volunteer regularly with Bk 2 Basics, with the exception of two who regularly use the service as a way to eat. “I know it’s not my neighbours complaining, why would they want to shoot themselves in the foot?” “People feel comfortable coming here because we don’t ask questions, I don’t want them to tell me why they’re here, I just want to help them,” Ms Warren added. A petition to City of Casey to support Bk 2 Basics in caring for disadvantaged people was launched on Tuesday 30 July and has already garnered over 1200 signatures.

Goose on the Unicycle! Breakfast with Samuel Johnson... Samuel Johnson is Love Your Sister’s resident ‘de-lebrity’ and has been disgracing our stages and screen as a middling actor for well beyond two decades now. He is best known for his work on cult hit The Secret Life of Us and cop drama Rush! Most importantly, Samuel Johnson is Connie Johnson’s little brother. After his big sister Connie was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer Samuel made Connie the promise of a lifetime. To ride his unicycle around the entire country for her in an effort to remind every young mum in the land to be breast aware. Samuel kept his promise. He spent a whole year atop a unicycle vowing to do whatever it takes to remind young mums to check their boobs. Besides being a goose on a unicycle, Samuel begrudgingly bears the title of Chief Flagbearer here at Love Your Sister. He hustles really hard and is constantly obsessing about how to improve Love Your Sister. Samuel is a bit of a nutter. He can be volatile. When he’s on there’s nothing like it, when he’s off you won’t know where he is. He’s an unpredictable, intense, loving, emotional and often over-enthusiastic guy whose pet hate is when his ‘passion’ gets taken personally.

Learn about prostate cancer treatment and managing complications Ian Ash knows the toll running a business can take on owners and CEOs. The local business consultant nearly lost his life when he suffered a bout of deep vein thrombosis while flying around the world as an executive for Boeing. Ian now devotes his professional life to helping business high flyers reclaim their life/ work balance. This week the News publishes Ian’s first column for Grow Casey Cardinia. In his monthly column, Taking Care of Business, Ian will offer practical tips for anyone running a business in the region. Ian has great respect for CEOs and business owners whom he describes as “typically the hardest working people you will meet“. “I don’t know a single CEO who doesn’t care deeply about their staff,“ Ian said.

“And the most common problem I find is lack of time for the CEO, which is insidious because it leads to other problems, like not building relationships and nothaving the time to be able to think strategically about the business, but if the CEO isn’t going to think strategically then who is? “I love seeing CEOs and business leaders get their lives back so the business works for them not the other way round.“ When he’s not working Ian likes playing the guitar, watching movies, listening to music, taking the family dog for a walk or entertaining small groups of friends. Numbers up for tree day By Brendan Rees A record number of more than 500 residents rolled up their sleeves to show their support for National Tree Day on Sunday 29 July. They gathered at Bayview Park in Narre Warren for an annual tree planting activity at the old tip site as part of Casey Council's Growing a Green Web program which has been running for over 20 years. The day was a chance for the community to plant more than 10,000 Indigenous plants and take part in a free celebratory lunch. The council aims to create a beautiful nature play area by re-vegetation of the former landfill site which has also been transformed into a 1001 steps tourist attraction.

Casey councillors Damien Rosario and Rex Flannery join the fun.

Third time unlucky as trafficker relapses into jail By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Cranbourne man has pleaded guilty to drug trafficking after police seized 160 grams of cannabis, a 'tick-book' and nearly $7000 from his bedroom about 5.30am on 31 July. Alexander Rendell, 24, told police that the cannabis, seized along with a vial of GHB, was for personal use. He maintained the argument at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 6 August, as well as insisting the 'tick book' listed only transactions as recent as 2018. At the time Rendell was on a three-year

community corrections order imposed by the County Court - following a 209-day stint in jail. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the charge was Rendell's third trafficking offence, and within a "relatively short time" after his release. He noted that Rendell had family support, seemed to have insight into his offending but had seemed to fall back into drugs due to "boredom". "It seems on the face of it that you're doing reasonably well on the corrections order. You're understanding, engaging, doing programs.

"But when you walk away from that environment you're engaging in the same criminal conduct." Rendell's history included being found with 24 grams of ice while on a motorbike. He was transporting the drug to pay off a debt due to drugs being seized, Rendell's lawyer said. In May, Rendell completed drug and alcohol treatment as part of the CCO, the court heard. He'd attended all appointments bar for one "unacceptable" absence, and been engaged in part-time carpentry work. "He was engaging on the CCO which is half

the battle," his lawyer said. Rendell had relapsed with his "previous crowd" after his boss left for Bali and work dried up for a month, the lawyer said. He was "contemplative" of residential rehab and moving in with relatives in country Victoria to avoid the peer group. Mr Vandersteen jailed Rendell for eight months for trafficking cannabis, and possessing GHB and proceeds of crime. Rendell is expected to face a hearing into breaching his CCO at the County Court of Victoria this year.

School marks 30 years By Brendan Rees Narre Warren's Dandenong Valley Special Developmental School has reached a significant milestone, celebrating 30 years since opening its doors. About 400 people including past and present students, staff, and their families gathered at an open day on Saturday 3 August. The day was filled with stories and memories, a display of the school's sensory garden, and an opportunity for visitors to tour newly refurbished rooms. Attendees could also walk through years of photos from the 'good old days' to present. There was also a display of past bike camps including the school's tandem bike on the purpose built bike rack. The school caters for children and young people with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities from age five to 18 years. The original school was built with seven brick classrooms which were considered stateof-the-art at the time. Past principal Margaret Edmunds shared her thoughts on the day, speaking of the school culture of serving the community. Current principal Sue Chernishoff and the two assistant principals, Judy Norton and Michael Weston cut three birthday cakes - one for each decade. Special education teacher Jennifer Prince said families of past students were "surprised and excited at how the school had grown and changed." This included the senior and junior play-

How is your oral health?

Summer reveals her hair lopped. 196334

School cut The leaders of Narre Warren's Oatlands Primary School have braved the chop to raise funds for a good cause. There were shrieks of joy from a crowd of more than 1,300 as the six captains and vicecaptains had their heads shaved or flowing locks cut on Friday 2 August to raise money for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Up to 20cm of hair was lopped from each student which will all be donated to the centre. One of the vice-captain's had been growing his hair for 18 months to donate it. "We felt that it was an honour to do something to help the sick people at the hospital," they said.

The leaders organised the day where students and teachers made a gold coin donation and were encouraged to wear a wacky hairstyle. Teachers' names were drawn out of a hat to decide who would be cutting each of the students' hair. "We thought it made it more fun for the students to watch and the teachers enjoyed being involved," teacher Tania Nicholas said. One student Jett Robertson said he was proud to cut his hair for the worthy cause. "I've always had my hair pretty long ... might need to buy a beanie," he said.

When people think of common diseases, it’s not often mouth diseases comes to mind. But as a matter of fact, tooth decay and gum diseases are two of Australia’s most common diseases. That’s why Dental Health Week at Beaconsfield Dental is all about promoting awareness and educating Australians about the importance of maintaining good oral health. The clinic focuses on prevention and maintenance of healthy gums and teeth so patients can actually spend less time at the dentist. One way they do this is by visiting local kindergartens, primary schools and childcare centres. This helps young children begin to appreciate and learn how to look after their teeth from a young age and ensure their first visit to the dentist is familiar and fun. Beaconsfield Dental owner Dr Robert Panjkov said developing good oral hygiene from a young age was critically important for children’s overall health. “Good oral health is vital to your overall wellbeing,” he said. “It is essential that children establish a

A confident smile for all Orthodontic treatment is often thought of as only being for children. In fact, many adults seem to think that if they don’t undergo treatment as an adolescent, then it may be too late. This is definitely not the case as there is no limit on age when it comes to getting the perfect smile. South East Orthodontics, based in Berwick, treats people of all ages in the area and across the south eastern suburbs, also including the Gippsland region and towards the city. They cater to anyone who wants to have the a perfect smile, including both children and adults. The clinic has a range of different treatment options depending on the person’s age and specific needs. A key area of focus for South East Orthodontics is early treatment for children. This takes place when a child still has a

mixture of primary and permanent teeth, typically between the ages 7-10. The advantage of early treatment is that it can help with tooth eruption, guide facial growth and often prevent more serious problems from occurring. For teenagers and adults, the clinic offers different options for them depending on what is required for their individual needs. Options include braces, clear braces, lingual braces, Suresmile (which is used with braces to shorten treatment time), and clear aligners including Spark and Invisalign. Adults or teenagers who are conscious of how braces may look can opt to have clear aligners or lingual braces for a less visible option. DISPLAY VILLAGE OPEN KADUNA PARK’S highly anticipated Display Village officially opened on Saturday 20 July, with a fun-filled day for the whole family. Sunshine, laughter and the smell of hot jam donuts, sizzling sausages, popcorn and coffee filled the air as crowds of Kaduna Park residents, future residents, prospective purchasers and local residents explored beautiful display homes by 19 of Melbourne’s biggest and best builders, including Metricon, Carlisle Homes, Beachwood Homes and Porter Davis. Special guests from Nickelodeon’s PAW Patrol were a hit with children, with Chase and Marshall roaming throughout the display village for photos and meet-andgreet opportunities. Children also enjoyed a range of entertainment across the village, including face painting, henna and children’s tattoos, and balloon twisting. The ’Passport to Kaduna Park’ competition added to the fun for visitors young and young at heart as they explored display homes throughout the village in the hope of winning a pre-paid $1,000 Eftpos card. Entrants were required to search for answers to a range of questions about the features of the display homes for their chance to win. Entries close in mid-August, so those still wishing to enter are welcome to collect a Passport from the Kaduna Park Land Sales Office and drop their answers off before Sunday 18 August 2019. Jarod Mills, Parklea Sales and Marketing Manager, said Parklea was delighted to see residents and purchasers taking the opportunity to experience their new neighbourhood. “We’re so excited to officially open the display village for everyone,” said Mr Mills. “Post-election, it is terrific to see the

Buyers are optimistic and realising it is a great time to purchase for a number of reasons, including a better selection of housing options and great promotions on offer from leading builders. “We’re thrilled that so many families are enjoying the day, and we hope today has given them a sense of the wonderful designs available to choose from when building in Kaduna Park.” Parklea, Kaduna Park’s developer, is renowned for building communities and

relationships within and around its land estates throughout Melbourne’s south-east. The grand opening was a prime example of this, bringing Kaduna Park residents, prospective residents and members of the local Officer South and Cardinia communities together in a fun, free day enjoyed by families of all shapes and sizes. The opening also gave buyers an exclusive opportunity to purchase within Kaduna Park’s new stage release, the Harvest Release, which officially launched on Saturday.

The Harvest Release overlooks the Gum Scrub Creek reserve and beyond to Officer South’s beautiful rural aspect. Lots within this release are set to be a favourite amongst new families, being just moments from Kaduna Park’s 1-hectare park while ranging in size from 400m² - 615m², with frontages of 12.5m² to 18m². This tax time, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is warning taxpayers to keep an eye out for people posing as tax agents who are not registered with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB). Assistant Commissioner Karen Foat is concerned about a number of people claiming to be tax agents, often promising refunds that sound too good to be true, or providing discounted services much cheaper than legitimate registered tax agents. “These unregistered preparers pose a threat to vulnerable taxpayers and risk the reputation of registered tax agents” Ms Foat said. “They pretend to offer legitimate services to the community, but in reality they pose a serious threat not only to the people that use them, but to the broader community and the tax system as a whole. “Unfortunately, we see too many instances where people have unwittingly used an unregistered preparer, which has resulted in a significant tax debt and loss of money. We also see instances where people do not receive their refund, or where fraudulent claims are lodged in their name without their knowledge.” Unregistered preparers often use a taxpayer's personal login details to access their ATO Online account through myGov to lodge tax returns. A legitimate tax practitioner will never ask for your myGov credentials – they use dedicated ATO online services to lodge returns for their clients. The ATO is working closely with the TPB, as well as law enforcement agencies throughout Australia, to identify and put a stop to unregistered preparers. “To protect yourself and keep your personal information safe, it is important to check with the TPB to see if an agent is registered. You can easily check an agent’s registration online at TPB.gov.auExternal Link. Remember, only registered tax agents can charge a fee to prepare and lodge your tax return” Ms Foat said. Follow these 3 tips to protect yourself from people falsely claiming to be tax agents: 1 -Check your tax agent is registered – go to tpb.gov.au/search-registerExternal Link. 2 - Protect your myGov login details and password – you should not share these details with anyone, including your tax agent. Registered tax agents can access the information they need themselves via our portals. 3 - Know your tax affairs – you can log into myGov to check your tax affairs at any time, including reviewing your return and refund details, or you can contact your registered tax agent or the ATO. If you know of someone providing tax agent services for a fee or other reward who is not registered, you can let the TPB know at tpb.gov. au/complaintsExternal Link, or make a tip-off to the ATO at ato.gov.au/tipoff.

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region

Commit goals to paper TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS IAN ASH Wouldn’t it be great if 2019-20 were your best year yet? As we have just embarked on a new financial year, now is a great time to plan what you want to achieve which means starting with the end in mind and defining your specific business goals. Many business owners may claim to have these already defined but few actually have these formally written down anywhere, so why bother anyway? Well, here are 3 good reasons for taking the time to do this properly:

Darren Roberts, right, with Jay Pinkster from Wallara TV (left), Ben and Bella. 194046

Communication is key with Auslan By Narelle Coulter The Casey Cardinia Region is home to the only deaf owned and operated Auslan training organisation in Australia. The Auslan Company is the passion and the pride of Pakenham’s Darren Roberts. Darren started his business in 2004 with two teachers, Jennie and Walter, who are still with him today. The business now has 20 teachers on its books who provide a range of Auslan language training to business, schools, childcare centres, sporting clubs and in other community settings. “Teaching Auslan is our passion and we teach Auslan anywhere in Australia,“ Darren explained. A former horse trainer and disability worker, Darren was born hearing but a bout of meningitis when he was four robbed him of his hearing. He wore a hearing aid until he was in his 30s when his tinnitus started to be amplified by the aids. That's when he "truly became a deaf person who cannot hear anything but can talk normally". Darren's motivation for starting his business was simple. “I wanted to work for myself so I could be home with my children in the school holidays and the summer holidays and I don’t like being told what to do. I’m a bad employee!“ Darren said. “I love being creative, visionary and innovative - to do things with Auslan that others do not do." The Auslan Company offers courses for Auslan beginners and intermediate students and short introductory courses or longer weekly courses in workplaces. It offers deaf cultural awareness for workplaces and teaches Auslan in childcare centres to both staff and children. Darren's team has also expanded their work into schools, which can now choose Auslan as a LOTE subject. “We also teach weekly courses to staff in disability schools, in disability centres and for

Casey Cardinia Region berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

DHHS in group homes,“ Darren explained. Teachers also work with families who have a deaf child through the NDIS. To extend the reach of Auslan in the general population, the company has also created an Auslan USB learning resources for anyone in Australia to learn Auslan at home. Darren’s customers include the Federal Government through the NDIS, local councils, universities, childcare centres, kindergartens, the Red Cross, the Apple store at Southland Shopping Centre and the St Kilda and Melbourne football clubs. “We go into workplaces such as a luggage shop or a café and teach basic meet and greet and money signs so staff can communicate with deaf customers and get repeat business deaf people will spread the word," he said. “Auslan overcomes many language barriers and helps people unable to verbally communicate have a sign language to use instead." Darren’s passion for his business and its social dividend is palpable. “I just love teaching the language and sharing my language with people who are really interested in learning. I find it amazing that so many people want to learn. It’s awesome! “And I am inspired because many deaf people have family who do not sign to them so providing people with an opportunity to learn Auslan and to communicate with their deaf family members, friends, workmates and deaf customers is a brilliant thing. It is so inclusive and makes us belong. “At present, each year we teach around 1000 people in our various Auslan courses but in primary schools and childcare centres through our Auslan LOTE programs we are teaching around 4000 children each week. That is amazing! And this will get bigger as more and more schools add Auslan as their preferred LOTE subject.“ The Auslan Company relies on word of mouth referral for its growth which can be a challenge. “We are David to the Goliath of State Governments funded deaf societies who also provide Auslan community and workplace cours-

es and get funded millions to do so and as such have a huge marketing account,“ Darren said. Another challenge is working from home, balancing family and business time, which often necessitates evening work. Asked where he hopes to take the company in the next 10 years, Darren’s vision is boundless and includes a series of YouTube stories where he interviews famous deaf people and a TV sports program on Wallara TV where all the presenters are deaf. There are also plans for a pilot show for the ABC where The Auslan Company teachers teach Auslan beginners for people Australia wide to learn at home. The company is already moving into the performing arts space and recently worked with actors who needed to be able to sign in a play. In South Australia the company has been asked to translate 6 songs into Auslan for a primary school performance of a ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ plus create an Auslan signed version of the play to be shown simultaneously for deaf family and friends attending on the night. Darren would also like to create a poetry and short story writing workshop group called ‘Deaf Poets Society’ and he has a book in the pipeline called My Daddy is Deaf. “With my daughter Samantha, a Wurundjeri woman, I want to create an aboriginal inspired and deaf related series of workshops that connects the two worlds." It's no understatement when he says "It’s a very exciting time“! Darren is grateful that his disability has allowed him to not only build a successful business, but also touch people's lives in a positive way. “I am so grateful for the opportunity I have to make a small difference to someone somewhere out there and knowing that we are helping change people’s lives makes the work so enjoyable.“ More information can be found at www. learnauslan.com.au/victoria or email Darren at theauslancompany@gmail.com

CLARITY Something almost magical happens when you commit what is in your head to paper or a Word document. It is almost as if your words take on a presence of their own daring you to defend the targets you have just set yourself and think harder about whether this is really what you want. It is not at all uncommon for the original objective(s) to be honed, refined or even completely rewritten as the implications of your own ambitions become more clear. When goals remain in your head, they can be easily changed and it’s very hard to hit a moving target. As a former business award judge, I had the opportunity to review submissions that included a question on a company’s business goals. These often included some lofty ambitions such as “grow the business by 50%”, but did this imply increasing annual turnover, net profit, number of customers or number of staff? This is where the application of the SMART principle (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-specific) provides tremendous benefit in crystallising what is required and how achievement can be measured. FOCUS In recent discussions with business owners, I actually had two tell me that setting a specific goal was “irrelevant” since they would “get what they would get” and because you cannot predict some targets (e.g. sales). However, this is simply not true. You may well have seen the Jim Carey interview on Oprah in 1997 who described how as a struggling young actor, he wrote himself a cheque in November 1992 for $10 million for “acting services rendered” dated 3 years into the future and saw this become a reality when he got his first movie role in Dumb and Dumber just before November 1995. The clearer we are about our ultimate objective(s), the more our actions line up accordingly to maximise the likelihood of success. ALIGNMENT Whilst it may be obvious to us what needs to be achieved, it is dangerous to assume that everyone else has this same level of understanding. Writing goals down and sharing them with your staff early on provides the opportunity for them to be further refined and improved and greatly enhances wider buy-in to their achievement. Here’s to your success in 2019-2020 through well-defined business goals. Ian Ash is the managing director of OrgMent Business Solutions (www.ombs.com.au)

Man nabbed following burglary Detectives from Casey Crime Investigation Unit have arrested a 38-year-old man following a burglary in Berwick last week. A jewellery store on O'Shea Road was broken into about 2.40am on Thursday 1 August. Once inside the premises it's alleged the offender smashed a display cabinet and stole 48 men's rings. Information received led detectives to executed a warrant in Berwick about 3pm that day. They arrested the 38-year-old and recovered the stolen property. The Berwick man was charged with theft and burglary and bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on30 September 2019.

Narre Warren SES members with their individual awards.

SES takes award Narre Warren SES has won the highly coveted STORM Award after being declared the busiest unit in the southern metro area. The team was presented their award during the annual SES Central Awards dinner held in Melbourne on 27 July which reflects the hard work and achievements of the dedicated SES volunteers. Narre Warren SES responded to the most requests for assistance with 600 storm related jobs in the City of Casey in the past financial year. The unit's controller Damian Burns said he wasn't surprised the unit received the award after attending more than 160 storm related jobs on 30 January alone. "Covering an area of more than 400 square kilometres, the City of Casey is one of the largest patches in Southern Metro, and it's con-

tinuing to grow," he said. "For our unit, this means a very large community that requires our support." Mr Burns added that each year the unit's members collectively volunteer more than 30,000 on-call hours to crew the SES vehicles and more than 8,500 on-call hours triaging events. "What amazes me most is that some people are in disbelief when they learn that we're not paid for the hours we put in - even it's 2am, Mother's Day or even the holiday season; we do what we do because we're passionate about the safety of our community," he said. "We have volunteers from all walks of life, backgrounds and professions and they all join for different reasons, be it personal or professional. However, what we all have in common is the desire to give back to our community."

As well as claiming the STORM award, five members of the unit were recipients of long service awards, namely: Damian Burns, 10 years long service Anthony Jackson, 10 years long service Cheryl Cross, 10 years long service Sally Higgs, 5 years long service Tristan Higgs, 5 years long service Mr Burns added how incredibly proud he was of the unit and the dedication of every member. SES Narre Warren is also excited to announce that it will soon be launching its youth programme. Open to those aged between 15 to 18, the unit will be hosting an information night on Wednesday 28 August at Vesper Drive, Narre Warren.

Cops’ wild chase

By Brendan Rees

A Casey resident has described the moment a driver "hurtled" towards her after an alleged stolen car wound its way through Hampton Park on Monday 1 April. Robin Dzedins of Lynbrook said she was turning left into Camms Road from South Gippsland Highway about 2.30pm when she saw a car "swerving like a maniac." "I could only see it head on hurtling straight at me. e. Luckily I was turning left, had I been going straight ahead I would've been hit," Ms Dzedins said.

hit flying in the air and I was thinking 'God, I haven't been killed and hope no one behind me is killed.'"

South east hoops set to soar in WNBL By Nick Creely A new-look WNBL team is set to take over from the Dandenong Rangers for the upcoming season, with the 'Southside Flyers' announced last Wednesday 31 July as the new franchise set to join the expanding competition. The Rangers franchise - which has been synonymous with the south-east region since its inception in 1992 - will be no more, with new owner and long-time supporter of women's sport in Australia, Gerry Ryan electing to take the team in a new direction. The new Southside name will aim to reflect on the commitment made by Ryan to create a team with the support of the south east suburbs and into Gippsland and the Mornington Peninsula. "The Southside Flyers is a fresh start for the team with fresh faces, fresh plans and a completely new look for basketball and women's sport. The Australian women's basketball team is ranked number three in the world and we want to build a culture and profile for this team and the sport that reflects this world standing," Ryan said. "Being a competitive team that is sustainable at the elite level is just a start. The Southside Flyers will be about creating mentors and role models, a team that is involved with the

The Rangers - being one of the most successful domestic women's basketball teams in Australia - will embark on this new era, while still respecting the history of the former WNBL side, with the team still set to play its home games at Dandenong Stadium. "Our vision is to significantly broaden the support for the new team and to get the whole basketball community involved. The name Southside Flyers reflects this vision," Ryan said. The inaugural head coach of the Southside Flyers will be Cheryl Chambers, one of the most

successful and respected coaches in Australian basketball. Cheryl is a 3-time WNBL Coach of the Year and an assistant coach of Australia's National Team, the Australian Opals. "This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a new basketball team, to develop a successful squad from the ground up and to work with Gerry Ryan. This will be more than a successful basketball team, this will be about the community and women's sport," Chambers said. The Flyers have also announced that Australian and WNBL star Jenna O'Hea has already committed to the team, with the dual WNBL championship player a huge signing ahead of the season.

The Cavaliers fall just short By Tyler Lewis The Casey Cavaliers' Championship Men's side went down to the McKinnon Cougars 104112 in its Big V basketball first semi-final on Saturday night. The Cavs had an even spread of contributors across the court with Brandon Polk and Mitch Chapman both putting up 22 points at an efficient clip from the floor. But it was the destructive Cougars duo of Dillon Stith (37 points) and Eric Williams (28 points) who combined for over half of McKinnon’s tally and ultimately won them the game in a truly dominant performance. The Cavs will take on the Cougars in a door-die clash this Saturday, and then play again the following day for the deciding match if the Cavs are able to win. Elsewhere, the Youth League Women’s side peeled off a seven-point victory over Warrandyte when it won 62-69 on Saturday night. Tess Young was impressive for the Cavs with 12 points while she also had three other team mates who registered double-figure points in an evenly spread performance across the court. Among the four who scored double-figure points was Lauren Tuplin (15 points), who remains one of the more consistent scorers in the competition this season. It was a remarkable victory for the Cavs, and they now have the opportunity to secure the 2-0 result when they host the Venom at Casey Stadium this Saturday.

Demons no match for rampant Tigers at Punt Road By Tyler Lewis In modern day elite-level football, the victorious side has to play the full four quarters - especially against the best side in the competition. For Casey, one half of football was never going to be enough to knock off the ladderleading Richmond at its Punt Road fortress on Saturday. With the senior match between the two affiliated AFL sides following the VFL match, a mammoth crowd turned out to the Swinburne Centre to see the first and second-seeded sides from the 2018 home-and-away season do battle. The game threatened to be a contested slog in the opening stages, playing into the hands of Jimmy Munro and the tackling juggernaut the Demons have proved themselves to be. But when Richmond get the ball on the outside and the likes of Patrick Naish and Marlion Pickett start kicking the football in open space, the Tigers are nearly unstoppable. Unfortunately for Casey, that is exactly what the Tigers did, ultimately getting the jump on the Demons and going into the first interval with a healthy 26-point buffer. Casey lifted after the first break, when Jimmy Munro ran hard to kick a snapping goal. And Mitch White converted his set shot, and the Demons was slowly but surely pegging themselves back into the game. Casey edged closer again in the third term with Jay Lockhart swerving his set shot through to make it a three-kick game at the final break. But the clinical Richmond side awoke at the threat of a contest in the final term to put the Demons away. Ben Miller kicked the first of the last inside a minute before Toby Bedford replied not long after. With time looming a factor, the Tigers had a five-minute burst of brilliance - kicking three majors, winning 12.6 (78) to 6.7 (43), and ensuring they are in the box seat for the second straight year. Despite the finals door still being left ajar for Casey after losing to Richmond, Demons coach Sam Radford is prioritising each week and the development of his young group. “We knew how they (the Tigers) were going to play - we just weren’t good enough to stop it for four-quarters,” he said. “We weren’t able to slow them down and 36 STAR NEWS

Casey couldn't match the intensity of Richmond for four quarters 192828 the way they wanted to move the ball - we weren’t able to keep the ball in our half as much I would’ve liked, which is an errant we need to improve on. “I think the focus needs to be on us playing our brand of footy for four quarters.

Berwick lands junior NPL license in a huge boost By Tyler Lewis The Berwick City Soccer Club is flying, both on and off the field. The club not only has new and improved state-of-the-art facilities at Jack Thomas Reserve, it is also one of 12 clubs to have been granted a license into a brighter future in the expansion of the Junior Boys National Premier League (JBNPL). The JBNPL expanded by 12 new clubs on Monday, 5 August to now make the state competition include 47 clubs - with a position still open for 2021 entries to potentially bring it up to 48 clubs. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

After a long wait, the board decided to grant the access to Berwick City, which can now field under-13, 14 and 15 sides in the new competition commencing in 2020. It's a major coup for the club and an indication of the growth of the sport in the south-east region. With the addition of three new sides in the competition, the board intends on adding more sides and clubs over the next few years, which means the grant for Berwick couldn’t have come at a better time. For the full story behind the exciting announcement, pick up a copy of next week’s paper.

Although not requiring the percentage boost, the Hills had the opportunity to demolish Cerberus even further but were extremely inaccurate in front of goal - kicking 4.13 (37) in the opening term to just two behinds. DIVISION 4 Hallam punished Lyndale in a stupendous 27.14 (176) to 3.1 (19) victory. Hallam, which sits percentage ahead of Moorabbin, piled on nine goals to none in the premiership term and didn’t stop there with another seven in the final quarter. Max Little was among the best for the Pumas in the monumental loss. Lyndhurst, meanwhile, put Moorabbin to the sword in its 20.9 (129) to 3.6 (24) win. Jarryd McGrath was dominant with six majors in a best afield performance while Matt Johansson was the best for the Roos. Carrum-Patterson Lakes had a field day against Dandenong, running riot with a 17.23 (125) to 5.4 (34) win. With a six-goal to none opening term, the game was finished at the first interval. Aaron Wilson kicked another handful to go with his 48 this season.

MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION 2 - ROUND 17 Devon Meadows went down to the ladderleading Red Hill on the weekend, 2.5 (17) to 9.15 (69). The Panthers held the Hillmen at bay for the opening half but, as good sides do, the Hillmen got off the chain and burst away with another victory. At the main break, the Panthers were only trailing by eight points, but a goalless second half proved costly as Red Hill piled on six majors in contrast. Pearcedale, meanwhile, suffered another heavy defeat at the hands of Langwarrin, 23.15 (153) to 2.6 (18). Huw Jones was named best afield for the Dales while ex-North Melbourne listed player Tim McGenniss - gearing up for a mammoth finals series - was named the best for the Roos with his three majors. The Dales face the imposing Karingal this week to avoid finishing on the bottom of the ladder, and will have to either cause one of the upsets of the season or lose by less than the last-placed Crib Point, which faces Tyabb. EASTERN FOOTBLL LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION - ROUND 15 Despite going down 8.9 (57) to 12.11 (83) to South Croydon, it was still a remarkable day for Noble Park. Nathan Oakes - who was named best-on for the Bulls - was meant to be in the stands for another four weeks with a meniscus injury, but four weeks was enough for the young Bull as he returned as if he hadn’t missed a minute. Current Frankston Dolphin-listed forward Ali Zijai also kicked two majors in his side’s loss. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 16 The Doveton Eagles were unable to secure third spot in their crucial clash against Murrumbeena, going down 14.13 (97) to 9.12 (66). The Lions’ elite accuracy in the opening term allowed them to run away with the victory. Both sides had seven scoring shots in the first stanza but the Lions were able to convert all their shots to take a 20-point buffer into quarter time. Simon Clarke continued his good form for the Eagles being named best afield, while stablemate Jye Sigersma (three goals) kicked his 19th major from just six games in 2019. Keysborough put away Chelsea Heights with ease as they ran away 13.14 (92) to 6.6 (42) victors. Matt Carnelley proved once again that three is his magic number with yet another triple - making it the eighth time he has done so this season. DIVISION 3 Despite trailing at every break, Hampton Park demonstrated why it’s the team to beat - edging out third-placed Clayton on Saturday, 12.14 (86) to 11.14 (80). A six-goal third term put the Redbacks back in it as they surged out to a remarkable fourwin gap from the second-placed Endeavour Hills. Endeavour Hills, meanwhile, coasted to vic-

Magpies prevail in the end OUTER EAST FOOTBALL PREMIER AND DIVISION 1 REVIEW Narre Warren coach Matt Shinners drilled into his players during the week that the trip to Wandin would be the biggest experience his side would face this season. The vocal crowd, the unique conditions and the challenge of knocking the Dogs off in their own fortress - it’s something Shinners knew his Magpies would simply relish. “When you look at what they’ve done over the last three weeks, beating Beaconsfield and then Cranbourne and with the crowd right behind them, it’s a big advantage for them,” he told the News. “That was a big focus for us (the experience), and not one south east side had gone there and won, so there was that motivation - the crowd is very, very vocal and a lot of the other coaches I’ve spoken to have witnessed that, so we knew the challenge we would be facing.” And in Saturday’s blockbuster between the two sides, it took a moment of sheer brilliance to separate two sides that refused to let the foot off the throat all day. The Magpies and Dogs could barely be split at the Kennel on Saturday, with a magic goal from Peter Gentile in the dying seconds sealing the four points for the Magpies, 18.21 (129) to 19.8 (122). Gentile used all of his class to kicking a goal in mid-air from the goal square over his head with only seconds to play, ending a battle which had so many twists and turns of momentum. Maximising on their elite pressure through the midfield, and with the likes of Trent Cody, Brad Scalzo, Dylan Quirk and Nathan Foote controlling possession and getting the ball moving, the Magpies looked ominous when the ball went forward in the first term, with Daniel Jackson marking everything and kicking the ball beautifully. But Dogs skipper Justin Van Unen showcased some brilliance of his own to stem the bleeding nearing quarter time with a lovely checkside goal, before Clinton Johnston slotted a goal after the quarter time siren to draw the margin back to just 23. The Dogs started the second well, with Rohan Heasley capitalising on some excellent forward pressure, before the Magpies once again steadied to regain control. Van Unen, however, kicked a pearler from

the pocket after the half-time siren to give the Dogs plenty of momentum heading into the final siren, and with confidence they could overrun the Magpies on their home fortress. And signs were looking worrying for Matt Shinners’ side, with the Dogs going absolutely berserk in the third quarter, kicking 10 goals to three and opening up a three goal lead with some of the most electric footy of the year. But the Magpies - like quality sides do when severely challenged - clawed its way back, rediscovering some of its spark from the first half. With no indication of which way the contest was going to go, the little contests - whether it is the stoppages, or the ability to just stick marks and tackles - become vital, and young gun Tom Miller came to the fore for the visitors, showcasing great composure as his side once again took the lead. It wasn’t until Gentile’s piece of magic that sealed the result, with the siren going shortly after the crafty forward’s freakish match winner, in one of the most entertaining games of local footy in recent memory. For the Magpies, veteran Michael Collins was absolutely sublime once more, while fellow great Col McNamara and Dan Jackson (six goals) had moments that will be talked about in the lead up to the finals, with McNamara’s drive particularly influential late. Shinners said that it was disappointing for his side to have allowed the Dogs to control the game in the third, and knew they would be punished if they continued to turn the footy over. “We started well, but I think we kicked 3.8 in the second term, so we probably didn’t make the most of our chances,” he said. “But for most of the day we did a lot right, but we lost a bit of ascendency in the middle, missed a few kicks in the corridor, and once you miss those little things, it’s one kick and a goal. But the Magpies showed plenty of determination to claw its way back, with Shinners heaping praise on his leaders in lifting when it mattered in one of the most impressive wins of the season from any side. “I spoke to Col McNamara after the game, and he reckons it’s one of the best wins he’s been associated with,” he said. “I said to Collo (Michael Collins), Col and (Brad) Scalzo before the game that they are our most experienced, and you’ll have to keep the young blokes up and about all day, and they did, and in the last quarter, they showed some terrific leadership.” Beaconsfield, meanwhile, found a bit of spark at home after a disappointing fortnight of football against Upwey Tecoma, 17.22 (124) to 3.5 (23). The Eagles were never really headed after skipping out to a 28-point lead at quarter time, and continued to build back into form and take the game on across the wide expanses of Holm Park. Matthew Johnson’s stunning patch of form continued for the Eagles with a brilliant nine-goal haul, taking his tally to 34 after being dropped back to the reserves early in the season, indicating just how far he has come in such a short space of time. In the remaining matches across the round, Cranbourne did what it needed to for its finals chances at home against Healesville, 17.17 (120) to 4.8 (32) to surge back into fifth, while Berwick’s impassable form continued with a vital win on the road against Woori Yallock, 15.13 (103) to 5.9 (39). The presence of St Kilda great Stephen Milne, meanwhile was enough for Emerald to upset Doveton at home in front of a monster crowd in Division 1, 12.11 (83) to 10.11 (71).

Narre Warren coach Matt Shinners knew the challenge of playing Wandin on its home deck would be the biggest his side would face this season. 185007 Pictures: ROB CAREW Milne - who slotted 574 goals for the Saints to be one of the most prominent small forwards in AFL history - kicked an early goal, and with the momentum of this, and the vocal home crowd, the Bombers always looked likely to cause an upset. While Milne was relatively well held after his early injection of class on the contest, the Bombers just looked ominous every time it entered the forward half, with Jake Pedder’s strong season continuing with another excellent performance. The Doves came back hard particularly in the final half - but couldn’t quite find enough momentum to force its way over the line.

And in the remaining match in what was a split round, The Rovers stormed home from a six-goal deficit at home against Officer to win comfortably at home, 14.12 (96) to 12.13 (85). The Kangaroos were dealt several key injury blows - including gun defender Stephen Heppel to a calf - but started absolutely superbly to take in a 17-point quarter time lead, and that ballooned out to 32 at half-time after a four goal to two second quarter. But the Rovers slowly got their game up and running, taking control of the contest to narrowly win the third term, before a devastating final term proved too hot to handle for Doug Koop’s side. 12418953-SN22-19
