MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk The Warwick Thistle Pipe Band is preparing to head to Sydney for the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in October and I am sure will do our region very proud indeed (see cover story, pages 4&5). As Drum Major Alexander Manfield points out, you don't need to have Scottish heritage to excel at the 'pipes and drums', and no-one with a heart and a soul could fail to be moved by the stirring sound of a massed band of pipers and drummers in full regalia. The Sydney 'Tattoo' is a true oncein-a-lifetime event for those from Warwick and Stanthorpe and beyond who will perform in October, and they are understandably excited at the prospect of being part of this huge event - along with representing our communities. The Warwick Thistle Pipe Band provides a familiar musical accompaniment to many local events - most recently at Jumpers and Jazz and the Allora 150th anniversary celebrations last month - and its members come from all age groups and walks of life, and they play with great passion. Please join with me in wishing them well. Jeremy Sollars

STATE ON BOARD WITH EMU SWAMP BY JEREMY SOLLARS Supporters of the Emu Swamp Dam project for the Granite Belt are cheering after the Queensland Government announced it will contribute $13.6 million towards the proposed dam on the Severn River southwest of Stanthorpe. In a statement released last Saturday 3 August, Queensland Natural Resources Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said the State had been "listening to local farmers and irrigators on the Southern Downs while it carefully examined the project business case". The dam's proponent, the Stanthorpe and Granite Belt Chamber of Commerce - through its dam entity the Granite Belt Irrigation Project and commercial arm Granite Belt Water - has been lobbying hard for the State to come on board with Emu Swamp Dam, following a $47 million commitment from the Federal Government and $23.4 million pledged by local primary producers. The announcement followed new analysis by horticultural peak body Growcom showing the current drought will cost the Granite Belt economy $100 million this financial year in lost production, wages and local expenditure. In his statement last weekend Dr Lynham said the State's funding will be dependent on a number of conditions, including the Palaszczuk Government having "input into the choice of expert reviewers and the design and delivery process". "The drought has been long and hard on our food and fibre producers and their local communities," Dr Lynham said. "My Department has been working closely with the proponent, Granite Belt Water, since the Emu Swamp Dam business case was completed several months ago. "The State will now provide the $13.6 million conditional grant that Granite Belt Water has requested. "Our concern has always been that local farmers and irrigators don't end up facing considerably higher costs once there's more work done on engineering, geological and environmental requirements. "I am calling on the Morrison Government, not local farmers, to pick up any cost over-runs on this project. "Irrigators have committed to provide a contribution towards the construction of the dam as well as pay ongoing water charges that would cover operating and maintenance costs.

Deputy Prime Minister and Nationals Leader Michael McCormack, Federal Maranoa MP and Water Resources and Drought Minister David Littleproud, members of the Stanthorpe and Granite Belt Chamber of Commerce, Southern Downs State MP James Lister and longtime Emu Swamp Dam advocate Cr Vic Pennisi (left) pictured at the dam site on the Severn River earlier this year. "Communities like Stanthorpe and Granite Belt growers don't need to be saddled with the impact of dam cost overruns or unexpected operating costs. "My department's water experts will also continue to provide technical advice and support to Granite Belt Water and local producers."

CONDITIONS ... The State Government's funding conditions include · The proponent being able to secure access to sufficient water entitlements. This will involve discussions with local stakeholders and securing environmental approvals. · Appropriately qualified and expert engineers reviewing and endorsing the design of the dam and distribution network · The Queensland Government having input into the choice of expert reviewers and the design and delivery process · The proposed owner, Granite Belt Water, providing information about the ongoing viability of the proposal and the business to allow State Government to undertake due diligence assessments · That if construction contracts cannot be signed for $84 million, the viability of the project will be reconsidered. Dr Lynham will write to Granite Belt Water this month offering the conditional grant. "In the short term the Queensland Government is continuing to work closely with the Southern Downs Regional Council to support its ongoing efforts to

ensure essential urban water supplies are maintained," Dr Lynham said. "The Queensland Government already has provided almost $950,000 to Southern Downs Regional Council to investigate and upgrade existing water infrastructure and to investigate and construct potential new and rejuvenated groundwater bores and access to recycled water for industrial use." The Southern Downs Regional Council has previously made it clear it would not commit ratepayer funds to Emu Swamp Dam. Granite Belt Irrigation Project general manager Lloyd Taylor said the Project "welcomes the commitment by the Palaszczuk Government and the Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy Dr Anthony Lynham to provide the remaining $13.6 million toward the building of the Granite Belt Irrigation Project". "The Board of Granite Belt Water acknowledges the $47 million funding contribution by the Australian Government and the ongoing commitment to the project by the Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack, and the Minister for Water Resources and Member for Maranoa David Littleproud," Mr Taylor said. "Local Irrigators have pledged $23.4 million toward the project. "The bi-partisan commitment to the project by both the Australian and Queensland Governments reinforces to the local community that both levels of government have heard and understood the need for water security to sustain local food production and economic prosperity for the region."

PROJECTED BENEFITS ... Emu Swamp Dam - expected to be completed in 2022 - is projected by the Granite Belt Irrigation Project to increase water supply on the Granite Belt by 35%, create 273 hectares of "new irrigated highvalue agriculture", boost annual gross agricultural production in the area by $68 million and generate an extra $19.5 million in annual household income. The dam is also projected to create 700 new jobs on the Granite Belt, plus 250 jobs during the construction phase. The dam would also include a 450ML component of "emergency urban water for Stanthorpe at no cost to ratepayers". A further 550 hectares of land surrounding the new dam would be "dedicated to the environment and recreation with eco-tourism potential".

Some 200 hectares will be inundated by the dam, affecting 18 properties. Emu Swamp Dam will be the first Queensland dam built since Beaudesert's 103,000ML Wyaralong Dam in 2011.

IN THE SHORT-TERM ... The Southern Downs Regional Council forecasts that Stanthorpe could run out of urban water in the current drought by as early as the first two weeks in December without significant rainfall. The council has so far been vague about emergency water plans for Stanthorpe in the event of 'day zero' but last week ruled out sourcing water from Coolmunda Dam at Inglewood, which is at 7% of capacity. It has indicated water for Stanthorpe could be sourced from Leslie and Connolly Dams in Warwick, both of which are at critically low levels. Mayor Tracy Dobie has previously told the media the provision of emergency urban water across the council region could cost up to $1.5 million a month but has said she is confident such a cost would be met by the State and Federal Governments.

"LATE AGAIN" Minister for Water Resources, Drought and Rural Finance David Littleproud this week welcomed the State Government finally providing the balance of funding for Emu Swamp Dam "even though they'll contribute the least". Mr Littleproud said he was also waiting for the Queensland Government to work with him so more growers could access On-farm Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate Scheme. "This is about expanding the scheme for water-saving projects like de-silting dams so farmers with permanent plantings can get up to 50 per cent back," Mr Littleproud said. "I put it to the Qld Government in early July, but they haven't moved on it while permanent plantings have been pulled by growers in the region." Mr Littleproud said the delays had cost local jobs as the loss of permanent plantings has a long term impact on the local economy. "The state government needs to understand the drought is on now and action needs to be swift, they can't drag their feet on this one either." · MORE ON THE REGION'S WATER CRISIS - PAGES 6, 7, 8. ●

TO STIR THE SOUL BY JEREMY SOLLARS

I

f the sound of pipes and drums stirs your inner Scottish soul then listen up - the Warwick Thistle Pipe Band is set to do our region proud. The band - made up of members from across the Warwick and Stanthorpe regions and beyond - is gathering a full head of steam to travel to Sydney in October to represent us at the 2019 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Lovers of all things Scottish will no doubt be familiar with the 'Tattoo' - an annual celebration of music and dance from the Scottish isles and across the world, held in the majestic surrounds of Edinburgh Castle. This year the Tattoo heads to Australian shores for four shows at Sydney's ANZ Stadium from 17-19 October, set against a backdrop of a full-size replica of Edinburgh Castle - and the Warwick Thistle Pipe Band will be among no less than 1500 performers. With members ranging in age from nine to nearly 90, the Band is ready to harness the full power of both its pipe and drum contingents and as Drum Major Alexander

Manfield emphasises precision is the key to their performance, with both himself and Pipe Major Chris Donaldson the focal points when marching, drumming and piping. "You're using a very different set of skills to those you use in sport," Alexander told the Free Times this week. "It's about following the leader and doing exactly as they do - it's very quick-paced and for kids it's a good discipline to learn, and it's great for kids to learn any kind of musical instrument. "And you don't necessarily need any Scottish heritage of your own to play in a pipe band. "I like to think of it as being similar to martial arts, in that you don't need to be say, Korean or Chinese in order to learn." Along with its core membership the 51-strong Warwick Thistle Pipe Band travelling to Sydney will include a number of members from Stanthorpe, some from Toowoomba and even one from Goondiwindi, in the form of piper Luke Tanner who like many in the Band is a former student of The Scots PGC College in Warwick, which has seen many former

students don the Gordon Highlander tartan proudly worn by the Band. There are a few common misconceptions about various things Scottish - you may think tartans go back to Robert The Bruce but are in fact a relatively recent development, having been formalised along 'clan' lines in the middle of the 19th century. Likewise, the drum music popularised by the Edinburgh Tattoo is more modern than you might have guessed and was largely developed in written form over the last 100 years or so. And believe it or not Scottish drumming has in part a Swiss influence, with precision drumming an important part of that culture. "The majority of the music we play was written within the last 100 years," Alexander explains. "Our uniforms are also fairly recent, including our casual dress which includes a polo shirt." Long-time Thistle members like Doug Cutmore form part of the backbone of the Band, but the Sydney contingent will also include a number of members who haven't played the pipes and drums for some years

but have been caught up in the excitement and the 'once in a lifetime' opportunity the Sydney Tattoo presents. "Basically we saw an advertisement calling for bands from around Australia to put up their hands for the Tattoo," Alexander said. "Our treasurer Dugald MacFarlane - how Scottish is that for a name - has been one of the driving forces behind the trip, but it's really been something we have embraced as a group and it's just grown from strength to strength." The Warwick Thistle Pipe Band is a familiar sight at events in Warwick and surrounds and most recently featured in Jumpers and Jazz in July festivities and at Allora's 150th anniversary celebrations. The Band also travels to country locations to play on Anzac Day, including services at Emu Vale, Tannymorel and Killarney. Rehearsals are held in the Warwick City Band rooms at the Senior Citizens complex on Victoria Street, from where you may well have heard their stirring sounds on a Friday evening.

NEWS

OUR WATER CRISIS - THE LATEST BY JEREMY SOLLARS Toowoomba Regional Council says it would consider any request from the Southern Downs Regional Council to supply it with emergency urban water, should towns in the Warwick and Stanthorpe regions reach 'day zero'. The SDRC stated in its 'Water Contingency Plan' earlier this year that sourcing water from Toowoomba - for Warwick at least - could be an option if Leslie and Connolly Dams run dry. In its latest online water update released on Monday of this week, 5 August, the SDRC still forecasts Stanthorpe could run out of urban water in the first two weeks of December this year, while it says Warwick's would hold out until December 2020. The Free Times has asked the SDRC to release reports by external engineers it has commissioned to come up with emergency water supply options for the council region but the council has to date refused, saying the reports will be tabled at the next general council meeting scheduled for Wednesday 28 August. The reports were due to be delivered to the SDRC by the end of June, and the council has also refused to release details of the costs to ratepayers of the external reports. Toowoomba Regional Council Water and Waste Committee Chair Cr Nancy Sommerfield this week told the Free Times the Southern Downs could potentially source water from Wyreema, which is on

the Toowoomba urban water network. Such water would need to either be carted into the Southern Downs council area by water tanker or by means of temporary pipelines and storages, both of which options could cost in the millions. Cr Sommerfield this week said the TRC had supplied water to Clifton from

Wyreema earlier this year. "Water carters were used earlier in the year to supplement Clifton's water supply," Cr Sommerfield said. "This water was sourced from Wyreema, which is on the Toowoomba Bulk Water Supply. "The Toowoomba Bulk Water Supply

sources water from Council's Cressbrook, Perseverance and Cooby dams. "Under an agreement with SEQWater, Council is pumping water from Wivenhoe Dam to Cressbrook Dam. "This underpins water security for users connected to the Toowoomba Bulk Water Supply.

NEWS "It must be remembered that this allocation won't fill our dams, but it does provide our region with water security for many years to come. "Water restrictions are in place across the Toowoomba Region and unless we receive significant rain in coming months, Council might need to shift to tougher restrictions and enforcement actions. "The Clifton bore field is under stress and would not be a viable option to supply Southern Downs Regional Council in the near future. "In the event that Southern Downs Regional Council makes a formal call of assistance for the delivery of emergency water supplies - (most likely from the Toowoomba Bulk Water Supply at Wyreema), Council would review its options and capabilities to respond to any such request."

ROLE VACANT The Free Times can reveal that the senior Southern Downs Regional Council position of Manager of Water Services is currently vacant. The previous manager - Seren McKenzie - has recently been promoted to Director of Infrastructure Services, a role vacated by former Director Graham O'Byrne in May. A council spokeswoman this week said recruitment for a new Manager of Water Services is currently underway. Mr O'Bryne resigned as Director of Infrastructure Services after just eight months in the job and is understood to have been unhappy with the council's workplace culture and decision-making procedures, although he has not commented to the media.

Coolmunda Dam at Inglewood. The Southern Downs Regional Council has ruled out sourcing water for Stanthorpe from Coolmunda Dam. Ms McKenzie has been with the SDRC for several months, having replaced the former Manager of Water Services, Renee Wallace, earlier this year. The Free Times also asked the council this week for details of the results of underground bore testing carried out in the Yangan and Killarney areas over the last several weeks but once again our request for information was refused. Likewise, the council this week refused to release the name chosen for the new pedestrian bridge on the Condamine River at Park Road in Warwick, pending the publication online of minutes of a special council meeting held on Monday of this week on which the naming of the bridge was the sole agenda item. Some in the community have suggested the new foot bridge is likely to be an additional debris hazard in the event of future flooding of the Condamine River. The meeting minutes from Monday had not been published online at time of printing of this week's Free Times.

TOP SCHOOL START Warwick East State School prides itself on offering students the very best start at school in so many ways. The school will hold a Prep Open Day on Monday 12 August from 9am to 10am, for prospective Prep students and their families to check out the school. The Prep precinct has dedicated staff, its own air-conditioned classrooms and toilet facilities purposely-built for Prep children. The Prep area also caters for weekly Playgroup, transition sessions with local kindies and Pre-Prep classes, secured with a perimeter fence. Prep students also have the opportunity to enjoy the awesome Environmental Centre, where the students feed the chickens, collect eggs and grow food which they can then cook or take home. Warwick East SS also supplies all Prep

students with a free school shirt and hat on enrolment and all 'East' children have swimming lessons fully paid for by the Warwick East P&C Association. Warwick East also holds an annual free Community Under 8's day, so children aged 0-8 years can spend a couple of hours just having fun. This year's Under 8's day is being held on Friday 13 September from 9am to 11.30am. Many community groups participate in this event such as WIRAC, Playgroup QLD, Carbal, Warwick Library, Top Hat Dance Studio, Warwick Gymnastics Club, Clontarf, NRL, Warwick Tennis and many more. This year the Warwick East P&C Association is offering a free sausage sizzle to all visitors. As well, there will be drinks for sale and Little Kimmy's Coffee Van will be selling coffee and cakes. ●

STOLEN TOOLS Two people have been charged and more $30,000 of stolen property seized following an investigation conducted by the Queensland Police Major and Organised Crime Squad (Rural) Toowoomba and the Warwick Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) late last month. "Following police investigations into an online equipment dealer, a search warrant was carried out at a rural holding at Elbow Valley on July 18 and a large number of power tools and machinery suspected of being stolen were seized," a Queensland Police media statement said.

"During the search detectives also located a quantity of dried cannabis and cannabis utensils. "A 29-year-old man and 22-year-old woman were charged with one count each of possess dangerous drug, possess of drug utensils, stealing and receiving stolen property. "The pair are due to appear in Warwick Magistrates Court on August 14. "On May 8, 2019, detectives from MOCS Rural Toowoomba and Dalby CIB located and seized a substantial quantity of building tools and machinery from a rural property located at Surat Development Road, Tara. "The theft of equipment which mostly included construction tools and machinery, is likely to have occurred in the earlier months of the year in the Brisbane and Gold Coast areas. "It's important to be vigilant when purchasing machinery and tools through online marketplaces as its evident these criminal networks are using rural communities to sell and trade stolen property. "When it comes to reuniting the tools with the owners it always helps when reporting the matter to provide photographs and details of any distinctive labelling of tools and machinery to assist in the identification process." Anyone who believes they may have information relating to the ownership of the alleged stolen property should contact Policelink on 131444 and quote reference number QP1901381005. ●

YARNS FOR A GOOD CAUSE... Those doing it tough this winter - and premmie babies at some of the state's major hospitals - will be kept toasty warm thanks to the efforts of some of the ladies at Warwick's Akooramak Care of Older Persons. Barb Woods, Jean Heeks and Grace Hill - with help from diversional therapists Chris Cave and Barb Mapes - have been working their nimble fingers in recent months to donate their knitted and crocheted work to the 'Guardian Angel' knitting program. The program is run locally by the Warwick Friendly Society, a Guardian Pharmacy, and the ladies' efforts will be distributed to St Vincent de Paul 'Vinnies' outlets across Queensland and nationwide to help the homeless, in the form of blankets, scarves, gloves and other winter warmers. The Southern Downs Regional Council says traffic flow is expected to be interrupted as road works continue on the new Palmer Bridge on Freestone Road north of Warwick. In a statement last week the council said contractors are working on both approaches to the existing bridge structure. "These works will continue to affect traffic flow in the area until project completion in December 2019," the statement said. "Due to restricted lane and traffic control conditions, significant delays will be experienced by road users. "Affected local residents will still have access to and from their properties and will need to obey the direction of traffic controllers, workers and signage." The new two-lane bridge will replace the original single-lane bridge, with the work being done by Ipswich-based contractor CPM Group at a cost of $1.96 million. ●

SENIORS WEEK The region's seniors are set to shine when Southern Downs Regional Council's Seniors Week 2019 activities swing into action from Saturday 17 August. Check out the full Seniors Week Calendar of Events at sdrc.qld.gov.au or at Council's Community Contact Centres and Libraries. ●

I am so happy that Curves is re-opening. I look forward to achieving a healthy weight again and to get my strength back on track. I love that it is only for 30 mins and that it benefits and uses all muscle groups. I also love the friendship that we girls get out of going to an all women's gym.

Sandy Wiggan

I am so excited that Curves will be re-opening and I can assure you that everyone else will be feeling the same way. I look forward and can’t wait for that door to open and be greeted with friendly faces from our new managers and also from our previous members.

Madonna Kuhn

I recommend all women of different ages, weight and fitness levels to join the Curves gym. It is a very non-judgemental place with friendly staff and clients, who provide motivation, exercise and equipment guidance for your individual journey to get fit and to improve your mental health and wellbeing. Curves helps strengthen your core strength and improve joint health which improves your balance and recovery. Going to Curves gives you more confidence in yourself while changing your body image. As Curves is a women only club, it provides women with a haven away from feeling pressured to perform like in other gyms. You are able to go at your own pace. It also provides company and friendship for women who are trying to achieve the same outcomes. There are times when you can work out as part of a group on the circuit or as an individual, depending on your needs. I have found Curves very beneficial in helping me to improve my mental and general health while losing weight. I wish all involved with this club the very best of luck.

It's a lifestyle many could handle - changing down from the big smoke to running a pub in a picture-perfect country town. That's just what Kylie and Bob Friend did in 2016 when they took over the lease on the Yangan Hotel Motel. It was a chance spotting of an online ad that found them checking out the pub - and the decision was an easy one. "We were looking at caravan parks in rural areas around Lismore and northern New South Wales as business opportunities but when this came up we thought we'd come and have a look and that was it," Kylie explains. Located on the scenic Cedar Route which winds its way through the rolling countryside east of Warwick towards the range, the pub caters for the passing tourist crowd of a weekend, as well as the regular locals. The hotel has four comfortable and very affordable accommodation units but some of the travellers like to rough it a bit with their swags. "We get motorcycle and car groups coming through and a lot of them like to just sleep in their swags out the back," Bob said. "We allow free camping for them and for the caravan travellers. "A lot of it is just word of mouth." The hotel is open for dinner in the bistro Tuesday to Saturday every week from 6pm to 8pm, and lunch from 12pm to 2pm, Sunday lunch only, with a new $10 lunch menu from Tuesday to Friday. Tuesday night's dinner special is a $13.90 T-bone with chips, salad and gravy, and Wednesday night's is a $13.90 chicken parmi with chips, salad and gravy. Happy Hour is from 5pm to 6pm Monday to Sunday, with a 'Monster Raffle' the last Friday every month. The Yangan Eat Street Markets will

THE SPIN

The Stanthorpe Gremlins did the Stanthorpe Rugby League commemorative jersey and their club proud with a thumping win over an under-strength Toowoomba Valleys side on Saturday as a part of the Stanthorpe Rugby League Centenary celebrations.

AUSSIE CRICKET PHOENIX IS RISING Well thanks in the main to Steve Smith and Nathan Lyon the Barmy Army are currently trying to swallow the sandpaper they were so quick to flash about at the beginning of the Ashes series. The Pommie press has been quick to jump ship and are now declaring Steve Smith the “Best since Bradman”. I don’t know if that is the l case but I do know the Aussies are pretty pleased he is back in the fold and his stats certainly speak volumes. I am pleased that I put in the hard yards training for the Edgbaston game as I have spent plenty of time glued to the TV or listening to the radio in the past few days. It was a return to the fold as a noteworthy Test for many reasons, not just the return of the Sandpaper trio. Matthew Wade made his return to the fold after a hiatus of several years, his batting form in Shield games and in County cricket too good for the selectors to ignore. His ton was made more special as he got to share the moment with his childhood mate Tim Paine. The pair playing backyard cricket together as mates could never have imagined they would be celebrating his ton in the centre of the pitch in the first game of an Ashes Test. Fairytale stuff when you consider the challenges both have faced in their careers. Then there is Pattinson, a class act whose career looked destined to be cut short by injury. And while that was happening Lyon (GOAT) continues to cement his place as one of the best spinners of all time. I know one swallow does not bring home the Ashes but I have to wonder how the sandpaper is going down as I wait for game number two. - Casey DOING IN MEMORY OF SHATTS The Stanthorpe Rugby League and Soccer communities will unite to raise funds for the local Cancer Palliative Care organisation in a fund raiser which is set to supersede the Stanthorpe Rugby League’s Pink Day. It is the brain child of Deb Wilmott who has helped raised awareness and funds for the local cancer support group as well as being a strong supporter of both rugby league and soccer in Stanthorpe. It was Mrs Wilmott idea to honour the late Peter Shatte and help to continue the legacy he left the Stanthorpe Gremlins and Rugby League in the district. She took her idea to the Stanthorpe Sport’s Association who immediately got on board with the initiative. 18 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

Mrs Wilmott said, “The Gremlins do not have another home game this year so the lead will be taken by the Soccer Association this year with teams this weekend fund raising for Shatt’s Cancer Day”. There will be Raffles and a Canteen operating as City play Carlton on Saturday and United play Ballandean Sunday with some sides even wearing “Blue” socks to honour Peter Shatte. In 2020 the Shatt’s day will be a dedicated Gremlins home game with the Soccer Association playing games on the same day and fund raising as well. It is hoped that the day will culminate with the two codes coming together at Sullivan Oval to celebrate with a Band and BBQ. Planning for this is well underway. But in the meantime you can show your support for Shatt’s Cancer day this weekend at the Stanthorpe Soccer games. The Soccer referees President Peter Patti has already pledged the officials on grand final day will be donating their fees to the cause. All funds raised will be administered by the Stanthorpe Sporting Association and distributed to the Stanthorpe Palliative Care group. I am sure Peter Shatte would be humbled by this initiative and hats off to Deb and the organisers. Just another example of the generosity of spirit in the Stanthorpe sporting community. TEAM OF THE CENTURY On Saturday night Stanthorpe Rugby League celebrated its centenary naming the Team of the Century at a function at the Stanthorpe Civic Centre. Close to 400 people including players past and present, family and supporters were joined by representatives from the TRL; Central Division and QRL at the function. Todd Greenberg CEO of the NRL while not able to be present donated the door prize, an autographed 2011 Indigenous All Stars jersey. The much sort after item was won by a very excited Rosey Harslett. The evening followed junior and senior games at Sullivan Oval. The senior side gave Valleys C Grade side a hiding but in fairness, the visiting team were short of player numbers (a disappointing sign) when they arrived and well done that the game went ahead. Stanthorpe players did the celebration jersey proud and following the game the jerseys were whisked away to be dry cleaned in time to be auctioned during the evenings proceedings. Plenty of people were prepared to open their wallets and support the auction which raised in the vicinity of $12,000- for the club. Congratulations must go to the small

but dedicated committee who have worked over many months to come up with the final field of 17 players named in the Team of the Century. What an unenviable task. Too often we overlook the plethora of talented footballers who have worn the Stanthorpe Rugby League and Gremlins’ jerseys over the decades. Saturday night was an opportunity to recognise some of these players. It was also a chance to catch up with old acquaintances, relive personal glory days and celebrate the “Best of the Best.” It is all part and parcel of what makes Rugby League the greatest game of all. Stanthorpe Team of the Century (in alphabetical order) Jordan Atkins ; Laurie Bonner ; Bob Cook; Russell Crisp ;Wally Crawford ;Brian Fuller; Michael Hancock; Neil “Butch” Hansen; Tony Herman ; Ron “Darkie” Lewis; Peter “Mick” Madsen; Peter Mavin; Bob Newlands; Rob Reeves; John Scott; Les Sellars; Wesley Smith VALUABLE HORSEFLESH SETTLES IN While the majority of the population caught some z’s on Monday night or tried our best to stay awake to watch the Aussies wop the Poms some very two of the most illustrious and definitely the most valuable thoroughbreds on the planet were in the back of a truck heading along the narrow winding roads towards a small NSW country town called Jerrys Plains. Between them, they are worth around $58 million. International superstars of the race track Justify and American Pharaoh landed safely at Coolmore Stud’s Australian base in preparation for their southern hemisphere breeding season. They both arrived in sensational health and took to the Aussie grass immediately. Both stallions are Kentucky Derby winners, and will be in good company at Coolmore among a galaxy of star stallions including Cox Plate winners Adelaide and So You Think, in addition to Golden Slipper winners in Vancouver and Pierro. Not to mention the amazing Fastnet Rock. It is not surprising that the two newcomers have books of mares out of this world planned already and as you can imagine some very attentive handlers. THREE TABLE HOWELL With several players unavailable, the Stanthorpe Bridge group played a three table Howell for Red Points when they met last week. The winners were Hilary Richardson and Carol Axworthy. Two of the more experienced players who are no strangers to

the winner’s circle. John Fernie and Helen Reeves finished in second spot and Carole Lihou and Keith Barnett third. The final round of the Club Championships have been played and we look forward to bringing you the results when the calculations have been completed. PERFECT CONDITIONS The recent weather has been perfect for the Croquet players but everyone agrees rain would be so much better. Last week at the Association Croquet games Grace Howard played a solo wining hand against the Heather Widderick and Carol Verwey. Both Howard and Verwey had two breaks of two hoops in a row. The final score 26-20 in Grace Howard’s favour. There was plenty of experience on display when Peter Tunbridge and Andrea Denkewitz played Pat Schnoor and Jenny Tunbridge. It was an interesting game that eventually went the way of Jenny and Pat 22-17. Jenny Tunbridge scored a nice break of four hoops in a row while Pat had a break of three. Andrea was also in the thick of things with peel and a break of two. The Golf Croquet group also had ideal conditions on Wednesday morning. In the opening round Kath Hopgood and Bev Sullivan took on the combination of Shirley Page and Liz Ellway. It was a close game with Hopgood and Sullivan eventually getting the upper hand to win 13-12. It was Shirley Page however who top scored with eight points. There were changes in the playing line up for the next game with Shirley Page and Kathy Hopgood teaming up to play Liz Ellway and Bev Sullivan. Ellway and Sullivan scored a 7-4 win. Liz Ellway top scored in this game with five hoops. Six players enjoyed some competitive games in the Friday round of Gateball last week, Bill Golding, Les Williams and Heather Widderick played as Team One. Their opponents in Team Two, Andrea Denkewitz, Grace Howard and Val Fancourt. After four games honours were even after Team Two book ended the morning with wins in the opening and final games and their opponents won games two and three. In the opening game Team Two scored an 18-1 win after Grace Howard scored three ‘Agari’s on the last play. Team One hit back in the second game with a decisive 16-8 win. In this game Les Williams made two ‘Agari’s’. The team continued their winning form taking the next game 13-10. As the day progressed and the court dried out conditions become drier and faster and more challenging. The final game was won by Team Two; the score 11-7. freetimes.com.au

The Shatts Day will be a lasting tribute to Peter Shatte while raising much-needed funds for the Stanthorpe Palliative Care Group. SPORTERS GOLF Ivan Jurris and Norm Steele figured in the run downs last week at Sporters this week they both improved on the performance. Jurris was on the winner’s podium while Norm Steele finished runner up. Ian Anderson finished the round with the Best Gross, the Pin Shot on the third and he and Matt Waterworth figured in the run downs. Waterworth also picked up the Pro Pin. The meat trays went the way of the Ladies with Nikki Waterworth and Marg Locke the winners. Tee off remains at the winter time slot of 8.00 - 8.30 am on Sunday morning. Remember all are welcome. Have you had a hit yet? TOUGH ROAD FOR RATS After an excellent season the Water Rats premiership aspirations hit a hurdle in week one of the finals when they were beaten by Dalby. The Water Rats must now win their next three games if they are to secure the premiership. In round one of the finals, Warwick matched tries with the Wheatmen in the opening stages and at half time scores were locked at 17 all. Dalby put first points on the board in the second half with a converted try. The Rats scored next but were unable to add the extras for the conversion and Dalby held a 24-22 lead. Dalby scored and converted two more tries in the final 20 minutes of the game and were and held out the Water Rats to score an important win in week one of the finals. The road to the grand final became much tougher for the Water Rats and begins on Saturday when they face Goondiwindi at home in the knock out semi final. TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH LIVES UP TO HYPE The much anticipated clash last Saturday night between the top two TRL teams, Wattles and Valleys lived up to the hype and was worthy of any grand final. The two sides have set the benchmark for the TRL competition in the past two years and on Saturday night fans were not disappointed as the game again went right to the wire. It was the Warriors who came away with bragging rights, the all important one point and a finger nail on the TRL Minor Premiership. There is no love lost between the teams and there was plenty of passion in the opening minutes of the game. Wattles took an early lead when Matt Richards scored but soon after found freetimes.com.au

themselves defending with 12 players when Nathan Gaulton was marched to the sin bin for striking. Valleys looked to gain an advantage with the Wattles’ player binned but the Warriors defence was solid and held several raiding attacks at bay. Valleys Denzel and Gerome Burns caused the Warriors headaches all game and tem minutes from half time Denzel snatched an intercept and ran 70 metres to score under the post. With a successful conversion the game was locked up at six all and going to script. Travis Burns showed all of his experience when he kicked for his winger with pin point accuracy and Michael Marshall plucked the ball out of the air and scored in the corner to give Wattles a 12-6 advantage at half time. It was undoubtedly one of the plays of the match. Denzel Burns proved to be a thorn in Wattles side all game and shortly after the half time break he scored from broken play. The conversion was unsuccessful but the Roosters within striking distance the score 12-10. The game developed into a tough arm wrestle as both teams sought to find a chink in the others armour. There was some outstanding attack from the Burns brothers and some equally outstanding defence from Wattles keep them at bay. With the big crowd on the edge of their seats and so much at stake it was the veteran Wattles captain Ryan Duggan who finally broke the deadlock in the 74th minute. With the clock ticking down, the successful conversion off the boot of Matt Duggan put Wattles more than a converted try ahead. Wattles defence in the final minutes was solid and they were not going to be denied on this occasion keeping their impressive winning run at home, where they have not been beaten in two years intact. The final score 18-14. Players from both sides rate the game as one of the toughest of the season and concede there is still plenty of improvement in their performances. Wattles coach Travis Burns had an outstanding game. His kicking game was a standout but it was his scrambling defence which was most impressive. Ryan Duggan, Michael Marshall, Mitch Duff and Ty Gardner all played very well. A win against Goondiwindi is now all that stands between Wattles and the Minor

Premiership. Should Wattles falter on Saturday night the Roosters could claim the Silverware with a win over Gatton Hawks. WATTLES 18 (Matt Richards, Michael Marshall, Ryan Duggan tries; Matt Duggan 3 goals) defeated VALLEYS 14 (Denzel Burns 2, Zac Miles tries; Gerome Burns goal). Valleys 17 d. With plenty to play for the Cowboys hit their straps early to take an early lead when Matthew Marshall opened the scoring. A successful conversion put Warwick ahead 6-0 after 10 minutes. The Hawks bombed what looked a certain try when centre Daniel Jennings dropped the ball on his way to an open try line. He made up for the indiscretion when he put his side on the board shortly after. Gatton looked to have the upper hand when they posted two more tries and with one successful kick they held at 14-6 lead midway through the first half. The Cowboys stuck to their task and were rewarded when Mitch Watson scored and captain Mick Bloomfield converted to get within two points for the Hawks. In perhaps the play of the day the elusive Coedie Tandy took advantage of a lose Gatton carry and stole the ball and sprinted 90 metres to score on the half time siren. Bloomfield’s conversion was successful and the Cowboys went to the break with an 1814 lead. The Hawks were the first to score in the second half when Haydan Lipp turned nothing into a try to give Gatton the lead. The lead changed as thee sides traded tries in the second half, before tries to Josh Cruice and Matt Marshall gave the Cowboys an eight-point buffer (34-26) with just three minutes left on the clock. The Hawks picked up a converted try as the full time hooter sounded but the horse had bolted. Final score 34-32. The Webcke Price Medal Points went to Craig Donn (3) Billy Jackwitz (2) Sam Broomhall (1) Warwick fill finish the 2019 season fixtures with a home game at Fr Ranger Oval on Saturday night and are assured of a top three finish. The Hawks have a tough assignment.

Competition was fierce and only after a count back was Mark Hendry confirmed as the winner and Keith Allen relegated to runner up. Both players completed their round with a score of nett 69. Hendry now joins the winners of previous Monthly Medals and in doing so qualified for the Medal of Medallist played later in the year. Keith Allen may have had to settle for the runners up position but he did get the nod for the least number of putts for the round in the men’s division. Rarely is there a competition where the name Scott Constable doesn’t feature somewhere in the awards. Last week however may have been a club record with Constable collecting the balls for returning best gross of 75 for the round, the pin shot at three, the pin shot at 12, the pin shot at 17, the pro-pin at 1/10, the pro-pin at 9/18 and a run down with nett 71. He did leave some for a few others. Matt Waterworth salvaged the pro-pin at 5/14 and Len Leigh (70), Ron Batterham (71) and Keith Barnett (71) both featured in the run down. Lyn Ludlow won the Ladies Medal round returning a score of nett 74. Runner up to Ludlow was Racheal Hendry who finished the round with the best putting record in the Ladies The club has scheduled a Single Stableford round this Saturday which is sponsored by club member, Madeline Jarman. Tee off is from the normal time of 11.00 am. There is a timesheet on the board at the club house and nominations would be welcomed.
