Neighbours say they are betrayed by plans for a 68,000-panel solar farm on a former Green Wedge landfill in Clarke Road Springvale South. They are backed by Defenders of the South East Green Wedge group that says the site should be recreational parkland as part of a Chain of Parks. The proposed $38 million solar farm is said to be capable of powering 10,000 average homes, according to proponent Progress Solar. The fate of its planning permit application has yet to be decided by Greater Dandenong Council. Spring Road resident Anna was shocked by plans for mass solar panels “20 metres from our front door”. She said a vast majority of neighbours opposed the project, which could plunge property values by “20 to 30 per cent”. “For years we thought it was going to be parkland and then a mini-golf course. “It was something that the whole community was going to use.” A Progress Solar spokesperson said the application had received an “overwhelmingly positive” community response. The project allegedly could save 42,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, as well as create 50 jobs during construction and seven ongoing jobs. The facility includes a 27 megawatt DC solar plant, and a dedicated sub-station to feed power into the Victorian grid. A provisional battery storage area, central inverters and access roads will also be built. A solar farm was nominated as one of the preferred land uses for the site as part of the Greater Dandenong Planning Scheme, the Progress Solar spokesperson said.
Defenders of the South East Green Wedge assistant secretary Barry Ross said a solar farm was “in the mix” but there was a “strong case for a recreational use for the site”. In the council’s Green Wedge Policy, its preferred uses included a solar farm, open space and recreation - and had to be compatible with nearby public open space and residential uses. The plan ignored the site being part of a series of connected recreational parks, Mr Ross said. “The proposed solar farm would cover the land which would preclude it from fulfilling its potential as part of the Chain of Parks,” Mr Ross said. “For many years the public has had to put up with the odours, dust and activity from the times when this site was used for sand extraction, then waste disposal, then capping with metres of soil. “All this in the expectation that the end result would be clean, green open space.” The Chain of Parks vision had been enshrined in a Sandbelt Open Space Project plan developed by Melbourne Parks & Waterways in 1994. The site neighbours two former landfills that have turned to parklands. Mr Ross said the group supported renewable energy but this was the wrong place for it. Greater Dandenong councillor Youhorn Chea said residents had raised concerns about glare from the solar panels. “I won’t support it unless they move it about 500 metres from the boundary. “I think we as the council need to think of the residents first.”

‘Victim’ City calls for ban By Cam Lucadou-Wells Springvale City has claimed several of its players were injured during a wild fan invasion and brawls in a clash with Sandown Lions at Noble Park on 2 August. In wild scenes, about 50 spectators invaded the arena when players lashed out after a foul tackle during the State League 4 match between the Ross Reserve co-tenants. The incident is under investigation by Football Victoria. A Springvale City spokesperson 'Harry' has publicly called for a club suspension against Sandown Lions. "It's happened before. Sandown has been
kicked out prior to this - I honestly believe they should be out for two or three years. "You can't have people going to soccer and parents wondering if they'll be coming back tonight or going to hospital." A Lions official meanwhile blamed a rogue number of "Sudanese youth" who had poured into the ground, fresh from a street brawl on Corrigan and Lightwood roads. During the riot, a Springvale City senior player had his front teeth knocked out requiring $6000 of dental surgery, Harry said. The victim had also filed a complaint to police. Three players were allegedly cowardpunched to the back of their heads, including
one knocked out cold, he said. Its goal-keeper reportedly suffered a sliced knee, and a player - a former Sandown Lion was struck by a projectile to the head. Springvale City say the projectile was a rock, a Lions member claimed it was a phone. Harry denied that one of his players kinghit a Lions marshall - an event that the Lions say sparked the crowd invasion. "We don't feel at fault at all," Harry said claiming City's version of events was backed by three referee reports. Sandown Lions committee member Syemun El-Nenny said he'd filmed a City player who struck and felled a Lions marshall on the pitch.
This incited the crowd to run on the ground to chase the player, he said. Mr El-Nemmy partly blamed a lack of marshalls to control the crowd, the rogue "Sudanese youth" as well as the media who later "escalated" the incident. "Football Victoria definitely needs to work on the marshalls and the safety of players and everyone, especially in the lower leagues. "Supporters are supporters. You get that in the AFL - in any sport, the crowd is going to be an issue." One thing both sides agree on is that the clubs and players had always got along well prior to the 2 August game.
Go-karts should go away
12424730-DJ34-19
By Cam Lucadou-Wells Former Casey mayor Rob Wilson has weighed in against plans for a go-kart racing track in Hallam. Mr Wilson argues there’s no room for the $2.1 million track under the low-hung high voltage power lines that would cross much of the site at 74-94 Centre Road. “It’s just the principle of having activities under powerlines should be respected. There should not be dwellings and other stuff under them.”. The long-term impact of electromagnetic radiation on the track’s workers was a “matter with unknown consequences”, he said. “It could leave the council open to a lawsuit. “I hope it won’t be conned by the promise of 36 jobs.” It was also unclear how the track’s floodlighting could be installed and operated safely under the wires, he said.
Rob Wilson under the high-voltage lines that would traverse the proposed Hallam gokarts Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS track. 196481 Mr Wilson was also concerned by track run-off into the floodprone wetlands, and the squealing of tyres bedeviling residents of established and future estates from 8am-11pm seven days a week. In its application, the proponent does not refer to any risks associated with the powerlines.

IN BRIEF
Armed robber was ‘violent, impulsive’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells A serial "violent" offender has been jailed for up to four-and-a-half years over a brutal bashing and robbery at gunpoint of a driver in Noble Park. Saipele Mataafa, 22, was in the front passenger seat of a stolen Holden Commodore, which pulled up beside the victim's parked Camry in Shirley Street about 1am on 31 July 2018, the Victorian County Court heard. The Commodore driver wound down the window and pointed a black handgun at the victim, who had been talking to friends on his phone. The co-offender demanded money from the victim. Mataafa, who had previously worked for a Narre Warren pallets company, ran across and punched the victim's head and face while the victim was still seated. The victim's $1300 iPhone was grabbed from his hand. Mataafa pulled him out of the car and punched him in the face. Mataafa demanded money from the fallen victim and searched through the Camry. A victim's housemate arrived on the scene,
and was threatened by the co-offender's handgun. Both offenders, laughing, drove away with the stolen phone. Mataafa pleaded guilty to what Judge Lisa Hannan regarded as "serious" examples of armed robbery and assault. In sentencing on 6 August, Judge Hannan noted the use of a handgun, in company, in a public street at night against a vulnerable victim who was alone. Mataafa had said that at the time he'd consumed 1 gram of ice and 16 stubbies of beer. He had also been recently released on youth parole, Judge Hannan said. His "disturbing" and "numerous" criminal record of violence included convictions for recklessly causing injury, assaulting an emergency worker on duty and aggravated burglary. He had been involved in a violent incident in remand in November, leading to four months in solitary confinement, the court heard. He was neither deterred nor rehabilitated by past sentences including a community corrections order and detention in a youth training centre, Judge Hannan said. Several recent close-family tragedies had a
"significant impact" on a depressed Mataafa, she noted. According to a clinical psychologist, his offending was partially caused by poor impulse control as part of a previously undiagnosed ADHD condition. Anger management, grief counselling and substance-abuse support were recommended. He'd told the psychologist that he had been at times homeless, immersed in a "drug party scene" and "fighting on the streets". With his "crew", he learnt that he had the capacity to hurt others. He "got violent". Judge Hannan said the still youthful Mataafa's rehabilitation prospects were "no more than guarded" but was the best protection for the community in the future. "The reality is you will need substantial assistance to make what I think will be a challenging transition back in the community." His jail term includes a minimum nonparole period of three years. He had already served 355 days in custody. He was ordered to compensate the victim for the stolen phone. The co-offender had his charges withdrawn by the prosecution.
Freak tree fall on car kills mother of two An Endeavour Hills mother was killed and her son critically injured after their moving car was crushed by a falling tree on the Black Spur about 9.30am on Friday 9 August. Angie Suryadi, 41, who was a front passenger, died at the scene at Maroondah Highway in Fernshaw. Her son Oliver, 4, was airlifted in a critical condition and remains at Royal Childrens Hospital, as of 12 August. Her husband Arnold Adiatiasvara and son Jonathan, 5, were extricated from the wreck. Ms Suryadi was mournfully remembered as a "great friend" in a Facebook post by her Rowville church Australia for Christ Australia. "A beautiful soul, full of love and faith, ascended to heaven, away from us, but closer to God, leaving loneliness and sadness," the church stated. "We are deeply pained and words are of no help in expressing the sorrow we feel at this moment. "No one can prepare you for a loss." Church member Lifo Wijaya told reporters at a service on 10 August that "the whole family were just a beautiful family". "That's why we're so shocked." It's reported that Ms Suryadi's family will fly from Indonesia for her funeral.
Men gang-robbed near stations Two men have been robbed in daylight by groups of youths in central Dandenong and Springvale. Walking home from work, a 35-year-old man was approached from behind by three males on Royal Avenue Springvale about 5pm on Thursday 1 August. He was pinned to the ground and kicked and punched to the face and body, police say. The robbers yelled at the victim to give them his phone and wallet. They stole his iPhone, Apple Watch and headphones and ran towards Springvale railway station. The group were described as Asian appearance, early twenties, and wearing yellow or orange high-visibility jumpers as well as steelcap boots. The victim suffered swelling and abrasions to his face, minor cuts to his hand, chipped teeth and a blood lip. In the second incident, a 25-year-old man was robbed while walking on Pickett Street towards Dandenong railway station about 4pm on Friday 2 August. A group of three males approached him. One of them put his hands around the victim and directed him into Abbott Street. They stole his iPhone and AirPods as well as forcing him to reveal his Apple password and ID. The robbers rummaged through his backpack and fled towards Pickett Street. They were described as African appearance, early twenties, about 183 centimetres, slim builds and wearing dark hooded jumpers covering their heads. The victim was not injured. Police patrolled the area and detected the bike travelling about 125 km/h in a 50 km/h zone in Huxley Avenue Mulgrave. During an attempted intercept, the man stalled the bike while negotiating a corner. He was expected to be charged on summons with speeding, unlicensed riding and possessing a drug of dependence. His bike was impounded for 30 days at a cost to him of $870.

Hoop dream By Cam Lucadou-Wells
By Brendan Rees A police road safety blitz has caught 358 drivers in the southern metro region breaking the law. As part of Operation Reset from 1-4 August police from Casey, Greater Dandenong, and Cardinia came together in an effort to reduce the number of lives being lost on our roads. Unregistered vehicles topped the list of offences with 123 drivers caught while 98 drivers were detected speeding. During the operation, 30 drug drivers, nine drink drivers, 23 mobile phone offences, four disqualified drivers, three seat belt offences, 26 impounds, and 42 unlicensed drivers were also detected. Southern Metro Region Acting Commander
Tony Silva said it was alarming to see the number of dangerous choices people continue to make when they get behind the wheel. "It's a harsh reality of our roads that every offence, be it speeding, drink or drug driving, or failure to wear seatbelts, can take a life in a split second," A/Cmdr Silva said. "Poor driver behaviour on our roads continues to kill and injure family, friends and loved ones. "The operation may have finished but our focus to reset this behaviour on our roads remains. "We are incredibly saddened by how many lives have already been lost in Victoria's south east this year, with 24 people not returning home to their families," A/Cmdr Silva said.

Two young basketballers are set to follow their hoop dreams, embarking for the US on college scholarships. Oyiti Amum and Daniel Akuei, both from Dandenong-based Red Roo Basketball, are heading to Northeast Community College in Nebraska this month. Just 12 new scholarship spots are on offer for hundreds of hopefuls. For Mr Amum, it will be his first time in the US - indeed his first time living away from home and his Cranbourne family of four younger siblings. "I'll see how it goes for me. It's going to be a whole lot different - the players are faster, stronger and more athletic. "It's colder over there but that's just one of those things - you've got to seize the opportunity." He'll be starting a business degree as part of his two-year scholarship - with a plan to transfer to a senior college to complete his education. He has a taste for flamboyant footwear such as a teal set of LeBron James. He hopes to convert his business acumen into a sneaker business one day. His basketball journey started six or seven years ago under coaches Trevor Burnette and Joe Hooks at Dandenong and Springvale. Accustomed to soccer, Mr Amum said it took him two years to find his seemingly-effortless foot and hand co-ordination. He stuck at it because he had a feeling of how good he could be. He admires NBA stars Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant but Mr Amum says he doesn't emulate anyone else as a high-scoring shooting guard. "I play like myself. I'm unique in the way I play."
He joined one of the first Red Roo teams founded by Keysborough businessman James Kerr in 2014 - which he credits for setting him on this scholarship path. "It's helped me with anger management, to control myself, to communicate properly, with social skills and to be a leader." Meanwhile Mr Akuei is looking forward to returning to Nebraska for the second year of his scholarship. He sees Mr Kerr as his mentor. "He really pushes me, makes sure I'm on top of things and not getting distracted." "He makes sure I look at the bigger picture of things." Studying exercise science, he said college had been tough at the start. Getting homesick, getting used to different cultures, and even getting his first "magical" experience of snow. Mr Akuei has now got used to the game's quicker and more athletic brand in the US college system. He's steadily working towards his goal of being a professional player and finishing a uni degree. "Basketball is basically the same wherever you go - you've still got to put through the hoops. "I think it's a good life experience. You're eating different foods, being around different people." His advice to up-and-comers is to "stay committed - keep keeping at it". Red Roo founder Mr Kerr tells his proteges to join the workforce or train in higher learning - "earn or learn". "What we're trying to do is help these young men be better Australians. "I've got enough resources and energy to ensure these individuals are well qualified to get that opportunity. "But they have to do the work."

The Metro Tunnel will make your journey easier no matter how you decide to travel Some of Melbourne’s busiest train lines – Sunbury, Cranbourne and Pakenham – will run exclusively through the new Metro Tunnel. It will untangle the City Loop, Melbourne’s biggest bottleneck. The Metro Tunnel will create room for additional passengers during peak times on the Cranbourne, Pakenham, Frankston and Sandringham lines and cut travel times to Parkville and St Kilda Road by up to 50 minutes a day. With more frequent trains carrying more people to destinations across Melbourne, the Metro Tunnel will also help take cars off our busy roads. From 2 September, Flinders Street eastbound will be closed between Elizabeth Street and Swanston Street for up to three years. Thanks for your patience as we build the Metro Tunnel. Guilty plea for offender By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 74-year-old registered child sex offender has pleaded guilty to failing to notify authorities of his four-year-old son that he'd been regularly visiting in Vietnam. Police pressed charges after they discovered the man on Face Time with his overseas son when they attended his single-room unit in Greater Dandenong, a court was told. Police alleged that the man made several trips to Vietnam leading up to the birth of his son in September 2014. On one of those trips in 2013, he had married the mother. She still lives in Vietnam with their son. After the birth, the accused made five long visits to his wife and child - staying for up to 11 months at a time. He had Victoria Police permission to fly to Vietnam but had not notified them of his son. A regulations change in 2018 has since prevented him, as a registered child sex offender,
from travelling overseas, the court heard. The accused, who had been on the sex register since 2005, had believed he was only obligated to report 'child contact' in Victoria, not in Vietnam, the court was told. His lawyer said the man suffered blood pressure and bowel issues. In a hearing on 6 August, magistrate Jack Vandersteen said there was a need to manage the man's risk of re-offending. The court was told that previous offences involved an ex-partner's child. "This is the third time you've come before the court for failing to comply with reporting obligations," Mr Vandersteen said. "I can see why it was an issue on the priors." The man had been placed on a suspended sentence for his most recent reporting breach in 2012. He was sentenced to a community corrections order, pending an assessment by Corrections Victoria.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Jessica Borstelj is more than happy to saddle up as a volunteer for Riding Develops Abilities (RDA) Doveton. The 15-year-old student's dedication was recognised at the 2019 Casey Volunteer Awards in July, as a joint recipient of the Young Volunteer prize. The other joint recipient was Tarali Bendix, who at 11 years old coaches Berwick Flames Basketball Club junior coach. Each fortnight, Jessica travels from Mt Waverley to help feed, groom and prepare the stable of horses. She doesn't avoid the less glamorous chores such as cleaning paddocks and water troughs. The pay-off isn't to ride the horses - they're solely for the children and adults with a disability which is what the RDA charity is all about. "It's really nice to see them enjoying it. It's an escape for them. "I wanted to get more involved in horses. It's a great way to improve my knowledge and improve other people's lives." She keeps a close eye on the vets examining the steeds. She hopes to be an equine vet or involved elsewhere in the 'horse industry'. As for the volunteer award, she says it's a fitting recognition for the RDA and its loyal volunteers. "It's really amazing to see all our hard work to help RDA has been recognised and seen."

Reunion of the century By Cam Lucadou-Wells It's billed as a 'once-in-a-lifetime' school reunion. Marking the centenary of Dandenong High School, ex-students from around the world are converging for a weekend of celebrations at the school. Among the highlights is a buffet luncheon held by Dandenong High School Ex-Students Association, welcoming the school's vast numbers of alumni. Secretary Gary Matthews was a student in the late 1950's-early 1960's. It was a time when the school transitioned from a vast catchment from Tynong to Murrumbeena to a more metropolitan character. "We were still getting people coming in from Beaconsfield and Berwick and even Pakenham." Mr Matthews, a former SEC and Hazelwood Power manager, says ex-students still hold a strong affection for the school. "As you get some distance from it, you start to realise the very good standards that it had. "I've just got the strongest regard for it and
how it set me up - with its values and grounding me in the basic ability to express myself." It's evident from the notable list of ex-students, which include a virtuoso concert violinist, an opera singer, an Anglican Bishop, a Chief Scientist, a State Treasurer, Federal Court Judges and league footballers. Barry Jones, former Science Minister, quizshow champion and sage, was a history and politics teacher at the school. "A lot of people became more aware of the wider world from hearing him speak." The association has 200 paid-up members including some interstate and overseas, with up to 400 following its Facebook site. Ex-students as far away from Germany have booked in for the centenary luncheon. "It's a chance for the older ones who aren't going to the evening (centenary) function at the school the night before." The ex-students luncheon is at Mulgrave Country Club, cnr Wellington and Jells roads, Wheelers Hill on Sunday 24 November. Bookings close 31 August. School merger marks 10th anniversary Dandenong High School has marked 10 years since a momentous merger of three schools. Back in 2009, Doveton and Cleeland secondary colleges merged into Dandenong High School. It has since followed a dramatic expansion of students and upgraded facilities. Education Minister James Merlino and Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams opened the school’s $3 million library with a specialised visual arts and media centre for senior school students on 7 August.
“I’m exceptionally proud to be here to celebrate Dandenong High School’s 10th anniversary with students and staff,” Mr Merlino said. “I’m also delighted to see the continuation of the building journey the school has been on ever since the Dandenong schools merged together to form this fantastic campus.” The final stage of building is a $8.4 million Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) centre. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the
new facilities would “open even more doors for our students”. “Our local schools are doing a wonderful job educating the next generation of leaders.”

Driver’s nap in idling car By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has pleaded guilty to a string of charges after being found asleep at the wheel of an idling car full of drugs, ammunition and suspected stolen goods at a Springvale South intersection. Jarred Casey almost fell out of the black BMW SUV with false plates when police opened the door about 8.30am on 10 March, police told Dandenong Magistrates' Court. Police said the seemingly drug-affected Casey refused to get out. He was described as pumping the brake as if it was the accelerator. Handcuffed, Casey continued to resist arrest. From inside the car at the corner of Westall and Heatherton roads, police seized a sawnoff barrel from a shotgun and a live round of 45-calibre ammunition. Stolen Audi car keys, a knife, diazepam tablets, nine watches, other people's IDs, a
zip-lock bag of "crystalline" substance, stolen number plates and an engagement ring were also seized. Casey pleaded guilty to charges arising from failing to pay for petrol in a stolen Mercedes Benz at a servo in Heatherton Road on 28 January. He was charged with assaulting a service station attendant, who had grabbed the keys out of the car. Casey then tried to steal a parked Suburu Impreza in the servo car park. He threw a Winchester rifle wrapped in a towel through a window into the front passenger seat. He was also found with a small bag of what police believed to be ice, a small knife and another person's credit card, police told the court. Police seized a stolen credit card from the Benz. Casey was remanded for sentencing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 24 October.

Compiled by Dandenong and District Historical Society
100 years ago 14 August 1919 Demobilisation from Egypt "I am writing in the midst of the Egyptian unrest" writes Mr William Owers, chief executive office of the Australian YMCA in Egypt. Demobilisation has for the present been stopped. The whole of the AIF are scattered throughout Egypt doing patrol work. They are working in small parties, which make it difficult to establish centres amongst them. To meet the situation the Brigade secretaries are visiting these small groups and leaving writing paper, games and reading material with them. When the unrest comes to an end the Australian Troops will gather at Moascar, where we can better service them and they will stay there until the time comes to embark for Aus-
tralia, which providing shipping facilities are available, the authorities state can be carried out in 10 days.
50 years ago 14 August 1969 The Election: 'Who cares what happens?' Nominations for Dandenong's annual council elections closed on Monday at 4pm - and only one ratepayer bothered to stand. Not only that he was elected unopposed. The three retuning councillors retained their seats without even a hint of opposition. Does this indicate a general apathy on the part of the ratepayers? Or does it mean that ratepayers are satisfied with their councillors? Well at least one took the trouble to stand Barry Powell in North Ward. But he merely took over from retiring Councillor Carl Downard. So once again
there was no need for an election. Is this apparent apathy only peculiar to Dandenong? At Springvale, a total of 10 candidates have nominated for the three wards. Cr Twohig feels that there should be more competition in council elections. "It reflects interest" she said. "After I was re-elected last year, I felt more personal satisfaction than in previous years, when I was twice unopposed."
20 years ago 9 August 1999 Work on Stud Road 'blackspot' The State Government will fund improvements worth $30,000 to the Stud Road and David Street intersection in Dandenong as part of its accident blackspot program. Among the changes to the traffic signals will be the inclusion of red arrows for the benefit
of traffic turning right into Stud Road from David Street. This would help motorist to gain a better view of the traffic signals. Mr Lucas pointed out there had been 14 casualty accidents at the location. The blackspot program in operation in Victoria since 1993.
5 years ago 11 August 2014 Grant covers Industry A Dandenong manufacturer has an extra $250,000 to grow. South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP's Gordon Rich-Phillips and Inga Pevlich announced the investment in Manufacturing Technology (IMT) grant for Polyem last Monday. The company will put the cash toward buying and installing $1.2million in state of the art multilayer blown film technology from Germany.

Suffering in sickly silence By Cam Lucadou-Wells Alarming male suicide rates do not just stem from a biological cause, says Associate Professor of Psychiatry and popular author Greg de Moore. It has something to do with how we socialise men to suffer under a "misplaced stoicism". Based at Sydney's Westmead Hospital, Mr de Moore is appearing at a free mental health forum in Dandenong this month. It is what he calls a "profoundly important" topic that needs to be spoken about across the country. He says he grew up in "typically workingclass" North Coburg, where communication in families was minimal. Emotions were kept under a lid.
EVERY TUESDAY
"Perhaps it's an Australian style of communication that doesn't treasure speaking out, communicating and sharing feelings." Mr de Moore says too many avoid sharing issues with a GP until it's too late. The silence can lead to heart attacks. It can lead to such profound depression that a person takes their own life, he says. It's why the R U OK?anti-suicide campaign is so "profoundly important", he says. He recounts late friends and colleagues who had not divulged their suffering. It had been thought they were "perfectly well". Mental illness - though afflicting 25 per cent of the population - is poorly funded, he says. There needed to be more flexible, community-based responses to mental health, and a greater focus on youth wellbeing.
In the past decade, youth suicide rates have been on the ascent. Mr de Moore said a weakened family environment, substance abuse and alienation were risk factors. The biggest change has been the dual diagnosis of mental illness alongside the abuse of amphetamines, cannabis and alcohol. Thirty years ago, it was rare that a schizophrenic patient had a substance abuse problem. It's commonplace now, he says. The impact of social media and new technology on young wellbeing is being studied. "Among my patients, I've seen that the transmission of hateful comments has led time and time again to suicide attempts." Mr de Moore is well known for his popular books on the revolutionary Australian discov-
ery of lithium as a bipolar treatment. He also wrote a book and collaborated on a film on Tom Wills, the Australian Rules football pioneer who tragically took his own life at 44. He is appearing at a Mental Health Forum held by Rotary Club of Greater Dandenong. Other speakers include Christina Molina of headspace, and educator Sara Villiers of The Metanoia Movement. It is at Melaleuca Theatre, Dandenong High School, David Street, Dandenong on Wednesday 21 August, 7pm. Free entry, gold coin donations for mental health research (via Australian Rotary Health) are welcome. Bookings: leannebyron59@gmail.com If you need help, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Kids Help Line on 1800 55 1800.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of death, killing one person every 12 minutes and accounting for nearly 30 per cent of all deaths in this country. Largely preventable, heart disease affects one in six Australians with more than one million people aged 30-65 at a high risk of having a heart attack or stroke-many of whom may not even know it. Knowing your individual risks is the first step in avoiding a heart attack or stroke and the best way to find out your overall risk is to see your doctor or health practitioner for a heart health check. While there are some risks that can’t be changed-for example-increasing age, being male, ethnic background (Indian sub-continent and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) and family history, there are plenty of risk factors that can be mitigated: Smoking High cholesterol High blood pressure Diabetes Being inactive Being overweight Unhealthy diet Depression/isolation Fortunately for the people of Berwick and surrounding communities, St John of God Berwick Hospital offers a range of cardiac services and specialises in the management of patients who are experiencing symptoms associated

I am delighted to have been appointed as the new Principal of Hampton Park Secondary College; a diverse multi-cultural community, where all members of the College can expect to feel included and be treated with respect. My background as an educator has involved working as a leader in schools across the south east suburbs of Melbourne for 30 years. For the past four years, I have been Principal of Mount Alexander College (MAC), Flemington, challenging an education system founded on a 19th Century industrial model. I have successfully led significant school improvements in engagement and learning outcomes based on the premise that schools should work towards preparing students to meet the challenges of the 21st Century, enabling them to develop the skills that will best support them in their future. Our aim is to educate our students to learn to be critical thinkers who are reflective, self-disciplined and motivated, empathetic and socially competent with the knowledge, capabilities and attitudes that will serve them today and in their future pursuits – as leaders of tomorrow. At Hampton Park Secondary College in 2020 we are moving into an exciting phase of educational reform and a new chapter of learning at the College. Our students will select subjects by reflecting on their own passions and learning needs. Wellbeing programs and opportunities to engage with community groups will be enhanced to celebrate individuality and connections, fostering a sense of belonging and inspiring the pursuit of potential. Our values of Respect, Learning and Working Together will guide our school programs and practice within and outside the classroom.

Lyndhurst Secondary College is a progressive learning community focused on creating the unique circumstances for each child to experience success. As a small school, we pride ourselves on knowing each of our students well. We strategically plan to meet each of their individual needs. Teachers meet weekly in teams to discuss their students’ learning progress, as measured through a range of data sources. This allows a learning plan for each student that is unique to them. Programs such as SNIP (Student Numeracy Individualisation Program) the workshop model and Reading Block are just some of the ways we focus on literacy and numeracy instruction that is targeted to individual student’s point of need. The success of such programs is clear; through NAPLAN results such as students’ growth as well as VCE median study scores. Student wellbeing is our other primary focus. Students are offered many options for getting involved in College life, including sporting teams, lunchtime clubs/activities and performing arts opportunities. Student voice is highly valued, through avenues such as School Council, SRC (Student Representative Council) and through focus groups and forums. Our Wellbeing Team also run proactive programs for students, such as building resilience and stress management, and offer individual interventions as needed. I invite you to join us for a tour to see how Lyndhurst Secondary College can be the school of choice for your family. They run every Wednesday (no appointment necessary) at 11:00am.

St John’s Regional College, is a proudly Catholic Coeducational school which values the diverse and multicultural nature of our local community. All are welcome. Situated in the heart of Dandenong for over 60 years we are inspired by the work of our founders, the De La Salle Brothers and Presentation Sisters. Our core belief in the dignity and respect of each child in our care motivates us to provide an environment of both high support and high challenge; a place where students will learn to value both excellence and the work ethic required to achieve their full potential. We pride ourselves on knowing our students well, understanding that relationships between teachers and students are fundamental in developing confident and successful learners. To assist with this aim, St John’s has a Vertical House System, which enables us to learn more about the needs of our students through the partnership between home and school that encourages our parents to participate in their sons’ and daughters’ learning. St John’s caters for every pathway and believe that every student can find his or her place here. The spacious 29 hectare site provides for modern facilities in the learning areas of science, physical education, arts and technology all underpinned by the use of information technology throughout the curriculum. We cater for a variety of different student pathways through a broad range of VCE, VET and VCAL programs delivered both internally and externally with local TAFE providers. I invite you to visit St John’s Regional College to see what our College has to offer.

the park in the form of Farmer Mac, his wife Milly and all six farm animals. The park is anticipated to open in March 2020. New Macdonald’s Farm Park is just one of many features found in this high-quality residential community, which has been carefully planned to ensure a liveable, walkable and vibrant local neighbourhood. The central wetlands, a signature feature of the Ramlegh Springs community, is in the final stages of development. With boardwalks and nature trails integrated into approximately nine hectares of open space, these feature wetlands will soon provide a tranquil setting for locals to enjoy. Beyond the wetlands, there is a brand new YMCA Early Learning Centre and a Kingswim Learn To Swim School, both of which opened earlier this year. Works are now also underway on the Ramlegh Family Community Centre. This council operated facility will provide maternal health, kindergarten services, community rooms and a community kitchen for use by the residents of Ramlegh Springs and to those in the neighbouring areas. Completing the picture, Ramlegh Springs also features a proposed future town centre, for everyday convenience, as well as a future primary school. The Victorian School Building Authority forecasts the school will open the first day of Term 1, 2021. If you are looking for land, a house and land package or a townhome, Ramlegh Springs has plenty to offer - from low maintenance homesites in quiet tree-lined streets to more significant homesites suitable for growing families. Thinking of buying at Ramlegh Springs? Now is possibly the best time to buy. With thousands of dollars in savings, the developer is currently offering to pay your stamp duty for land purchased in Stage 10 of the estate.

Special guests from Nickelodeon’s PAW Patrol were a hit with children, with Chase and Marshall roaming throughout the display village for photos and meet-and-greet opportunities. Children also enjoyed a range of entertainment across the village, including face painting, henna and children’s tattoos, and balloon twisting. Trauma cleaner’s shock tales By Cam Lucadou-Wells Rising above adversity after adversity, trauma cleaner Sandra Pankhurst is well qualified to talk on the human experience. Set to speak at Dandenong on 18 August, Sandra says she's open to any question on her extraordinary life captured in the award-winning book The Trauma Cleaner. "People say to me 'f*** I thought my life was bad, how do you do it?' "Well, it's being strong and looking at the positive side of life." It was cathartic to bare her life in her biography by Sarah Krasnostein - and then unexpectedly for universal praise to flow her way, she says. The narrative follows her abused childhood, and her escape from her foster family as a teen. She made the heavy call to become a gender reassignment patient and walk out as a husband and a father. As a sex worker, she'd been raped and nearly killed. On reflection, it was the "best thing", jolting her out of prostitution, she says.
She found good often followed from bad things, and it was necessary to go with the flow. Her long list of vocations has jumped from funeral director to a proprietor whose thriving hardware store was killed by Bunnings to the chief executive of a trauma cleaning business. "We do the jobs that no one else will do," she says of her work which includes cleaning the most gruesome of murder scenes, sewerage spills, blood and vomit. Places where the "mice and rats are jumping out". It was at first a "culture shock" for the selfconfessed neat-freak dubbed 'Miss Sparkle'. She's paid a price for her work, the strong cleaning chemicals having ravaged her lungs. Still with labored breath, Sandra says she soldiers on, powered by her 'glass-half-full' mentality. "If you use your mind as a tool of engagement you can change anything in life." Having lived through so much, Sandra says she doesn't judge her clients. There needs to be more compassion, with better training in aged care and mental

Combine invitees revealed By Nick Creely
Draft prospect Hayden Young is having a stellar season. 195934
Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS
Just who is in the lead? With just one round left to play in the 2019 NAB League home and away season, Tyler Lewis has taken a look at certain Dandenong Stingrays players across the season in his best and fairest form guide. Based on the NAB League website throughout the season, the Stingrays have entered their best players each round, with notable names featured every single week, giving the perfect indication of who has excelled this season. Up until his shoulder injury a few weeks ago, Bailey Schmidt was bolstering himself as a potential draftee to any club that was looking for a ruckman with another year of development under his belt. Schmidt's performance early in the season was rewarded with a call up to VFL, where his first game at Frankston was the Dolphins' only win for the year so far. Schmidt, himself, converted two majors on debut. Upon his return to Dandenong, Schmidt demonstrated his improvement in the ruck against quality opposition in Sandringham. Lachlan Williams' strong year at NAB League level has led to him being one of the bolters of this year's draft. He has the ability to play a number of roles and is the type of player who will not disappoint on an AFL list. Williams has shown he has the ability to get the job done up the ground and also impact the scoreboard when up forward. The 17-year-old earned an invitation to the National Combine, where his kicking will no doubt be a feature. Averaging 16 disposals in 2019, Williams is a player the Stingrays trust distributing the ball by foot. Jack Toner has been the barometer of consistency in 2019 and it is no surprise he has been one of the stars of the season. Toner often starts in the engine room of the Stingrays side but will work up and down the lanes of the ground finding the football. So far this year, Toner has reached the 20 disposal milestone seven times and four times in the past five weeks. Playing the 13 matches this year; Toner is dandenong.starcommunity.com.au
indisputably in contention for the Team of the Year at season's end. With the most games in a Stingrays jumper by any player this season (14), Clayton Gay has had a building season as a bottom aged player. Gay has ridden the ups and downs of the Stingrays' ins and outs this season, often being thrown at either end of the ground. When forward, Gay looks dangerous around goals and often hits the scoreboard - when back the left-footer provides composure and will collect a plethora of rebound 50s turning defense into attack with one swing of his leg. The bottom-age year that Clayton Gay has had is a perfect platform for him to explode in his draft year next year. One of the biggest challenges for a top prospect coming into their draft year is handling the expectation. Hayden Young not only handled that expectation but impressively exceeded it. The top prospect has played less games than the usual Stingray, with Vic Country duties, but when wearing the Dandenong colours has been a noticeable class above - playing at all corners of the ground. Often carrying a tag or two, keeping Young's impact out of the game for the entire match seems like the impossible task. In the recent match against Gippsland, Young was being closely followed and handled at the stoppages, having only two disposals to the first break - but it didn't take long for him to assert his caliber going into half-time as the ground's leading possession-getter with 15. Despite having a tremendous home and away season, all eyes will be on the youngster in the finals series. TOP FIVE PLAYER Hayden Young Clayton Gay Jack Toner Lachlan Williams Bailey Schmidt

St Kilda Next Generation Academy prospect Bigoa 'Biggie' Nyuon is one of three Dandenong Stingrays draft prospects selected in the 2019 State and 'Rookie Me' Combine. More than 100 players from across the nation will look to impress AFL recruiters at the second of the combines (separate to the National Combine) in October, after receiving nominations last Wednesday. From the State combine last year, 22 players were selected in either the AFL or rookie drafts. The athletic utility from Rowville is a product of the Saints' Next Generation Academy, which is a joint initiative between the AFL and AFL clubs aimed at attracting and developing players while growing participation in the under-represented segments of the community. The Saints' allocated zone is the bayside region of Melbourne, which incorporates the Stingrays. Stingrays coach Nick Cox was full of praise for his star youngster after a recent match against Gippsland Power, where after an injury to ruckman Bailey Schmidt, Nyuon shone in the ruck after being thrust into the role early in the match. "Biggie probably played one of the best games for the Stingrays thus far," Cox said. "The worrying part about it is that he now needs to do that more consistently, week in week out and that is something he is working on quite hard. "Biggie had great energy, he stayed in the contest longer and it was pleasing at the end of the day that he stood up when he had to. "He was really good for us." The Eagles soar to victory By Tyler Lewis
Damian Garner (middle) celebrates a goal for Rowville on the weekend. 196580 Denmead shone for Lyndale in his side’s disappointing display. The Lightning - which sits on top of the ladder - will get a taste of finals early when it takes on the third-placed Frankston Dolphins on the weekend. Lyndale, meanwhile, has the chance to snare its second victory when it takes on Dandenong, which also has only the one win so far. In the Eastern Football League's Premier Division, Montrose stuck with Rowville for the best part of a half before the Hawks flexed their muscles in the second half to take away a 14.7 (91) to 8.9 (57) win. A seven-goal to one premiership term set up the win for the Hawks, who had nine individual goal scorers. Ziggie Alwan was the best for the Hawks with his three majors. Rowville will take on Noble Park in the next round of the season. Noble Park suffered its 10th loss of the season when it went down to an inaccurate Blackburn, 9.17 (71) to 6.6 (42). Nathan Oakes was again best afield for the Bulls, while Jake Hammond booted five for the Panthers.

Keysborough shook off a wasteful start against Caulfield to run away with a 10.11 (71) to 5.13 (43) victory in Division 2 of the Southern Football League on Saturday. Chris Bryan brought up his season half-century with his two majors on the weekend, while Anthony Brannan was named best afield. Stuart Paterson was named the best for Caulfield. The finals begin a week early for the Gulls this week when they take on Springvale Districts, which sits on top of the ladder. The Doveton Eagles, meanwhile, soared to victory after a blistering opening half against Heatherton, winning 10.13 (73) to 2.5 (17). Nick Battle shone for the Eagles with four majors while Adam Read also added three. Chris Tosin stood strong for Heatherton, which now faces relegation at season’s end if it can’t beat East Brighton in the final round. The Eagles, meanwhile, are expected to make the finals after they take on Skye in Round 18. In Division 3, the ladder-leading Hampton Park continued its winning ways against Endeavour Hills on the weekend, 9.9 (63) to 5.3 (33). The Redbacks did as they have all year when they jumped the Hills early and coasted home from then. Shaun Walsh was the best for Hampton Park while Nathan Reid was a standout for Endeavour Hills. Endeavour Hills has the opportunity to move into second position when it takes on Clayton this weekend in the final round. The Hills have a mammoth percentage and, if they win, they will equal Clayton on wins and surpass them on percentage to steal second place. Hampton Park will play Black Rock, which the Redbacks are expected to beat comfortably. Hampton Park forward Peter Dye (62 season goals) practically has his name etched on the league’s goal kicking award already, leading the next best Jarrod Marolla (50 goals) by 12 majors. And in Division 4, Hallam relished in the opportunity to gain some percentage against Dandenong, winning 15.16 (106) to 2.3 (15). The Hawks went goalless in the opening term but flicked the switch in the second and the last to run away big winners. A brilliant 7.5 to nil final term boosted the victory for the Hawks. Rory McIvor was best afield with his three majors. Despite the Hawks winning big and gaining some much-needed percentage, Moorabbin holds a two-point ladder lead over Hallam due to the draw against the Dolphins. It will come down to the Round 18 clash against the second-placed South Yarra if the Hawks are to sneak into fourth. Lyndhurst inflicted some pain on Lyndale, winning 13.10 (88) to 0.2 (2) on Saturday. The Lightning is a formidable side this season and made the most of its opportunities in front of goal early to put an end to any doubt of taking the four points. Hamish Browning continued his form in front of goal when he booted four and was named best afield for Lyndhurst, while Jayden
