Knitters spread comfort THE Inverloch Probus Knitters group has entered into a partnership with local emergency services to help comfort those impacted by tragedy. With the increasing incidence of natural and personal disasters - including vehicle accidents, house fires, drowning accidents and medical issues - it is vital that children and family members have access to immediate comfort to help them through their trauma. This is particularly relevant with children. Knitted teddies can often be the answer in such a situation. Referred to as Trauma Teddies, they are specially knitted teddies that can be cuddled and treasured by children and adults alike in times of physical and mental stress. The teddies are knitted to very specific guidelines, originally laid out by the Red Cross, and are made from yarn and have no attachments that could be a danger by being swallowed, and stuffing should be stuffed with a Dacron fibre ensuring complete safety for the children. Trauma Teddies first began in NSW in 1990 after Campbelltown Ambulance Superintendent, Richard Hamilton, saw the calming effect of a teddy bear given to a child being treated by a fellow ambulance officer. This was followed up by the local Red Cross, resulting in the birth of the Trauma Teddies program. The Inverloch Probus Knitters Group has been providing a range of knitted items to
various organisations for several years and has recently added the trauma teddies. These are provided to the Salvation Army, to women’s refuges for women and their children. Teddies are also given, along with rugs and knitted garments, to Mission Without Limits, an organisation providing living essentials nationally, to outback communities, and also the likes of East Timor and to Eastern Bloc countries, where simply surviving from day to day is a struggle, and the children find the teddies of immense comfort. Local doctors and dentists also find the teddies helpful for children involved in medical and dental procedures. Upon first hearing about the availability of these teddies, Leongatha Country Fire Association (CFA) contacted the Probus Knitters requesting teddies for each of their trucks to pass on to families in the event of loss. The CFA explained that they are often called to an incident where there has been a loss of life or possessions, such as a fire or road accident, and the comfort provided by a soft, cuddly teddy is of enormous comfort at that particular time. Following the Leongatha request, Foster CFA and other nearby CFA groups have also requested teddies for their trucks. The Inverloch Probus Knitters have provided over 600 knitted rugs and a countless range of warm clothing for local and overseas provision and are enjoying the addition of trauma teddies to their repertoire.

No holding Robbo back IF ever there was an eager applicant wishing to join the Probus Club of St Leonards, it was Robbo, as he wishes to be called. Originally, Robbo was to be inducted in April of this year but suddenly he found he had to have an amputation operation that set him back. Because Robbo was worried about a possible long delay before his induction could take place, the club’s committee, along with support from its members and Probus South Pacific, carried out the induction at Whitehaven Retirement Home in Newcomb on 17 July, 2019. Attending the induction was the club’s president Ida Frank, Robbo’s sponsor Casa O’Hare, secretary Olga Useli, welfare officer Lauris Clifford, public officer Ken Lees, club member Karen Sigley, Robbo’s son and a guest Pan Amien from China, who kindly took a small video clip of proceedings.
Following the induction the home provided a lovely afternoon tea where some of the home’s residents also joined in the festivities. Syndal Combined Probus Club president Robert Renshaw presents his club’s bottle top collection to Sean Teer, a Director of Envision following his presenting a talk to the Probus Club.
A top way to recycle plastic President Ida Frank, left, and Robbo’s sponsor Casa O’Hare inducting and presenting Robbo with his Induction kit.
The induction takes place.
THERE is an organisation called Envision who have sent many appeals to community groups such as Lions, Rotary and Probus, to collect plastic bottle tops so that they may be put to good use in making hands for third world countries. The Envision Hands program is a unique environmental and humanitarian project, involving schools and the community, run by a community-based charity, Envision, involving the community collecting bottle tops which are then recycled and eventually turned into prosthetic hands/arms for children and people from war torn and third world countries. Their vision is eventually to have schoolchildren print the hands via 3D printers, for the children/people who need them, from the recycled filament developed from the tops collected. Whilst Envision has received great support from Coca Cola, Rotary, and Lions Clubs the project still needs further, significant funding to recycle the great number of plastic tops coming through.
A young boy in India fitted with such a hand. They ask that any donations, no matter how small, from Probus members are greatly appreciated. Further details of the project may be made through the website or via contacting Sean Teer on 0413 003 795.

Wheel turns for women
Dates for Your Diary DELEGATES MEETING Monday 26 August at Mulgrave Country Club, Wheelers Hill.
ANNUAL MEETING
AFTER 33 years as a men only club, the Probus Club of Wheelers Hill has decided to become a mixed gender club. While the club has been, and continues, operating successfully, a gradual decline in membership, and an aging demographic, signals that difficulties will arise in the not too distant future, particularly in getting members willing to take on committee positions. In contrast, the mixed gender clubs in the area are going well, with many having waiting lists for membership. Wheelers Hill members felt that this was a good opportunity to rejuvenate the club and attract a broader base of members. While the switch in status is appealing to couples, the club is also keen to attract individuals as members. Wheelers Hill Probus Club meets on the second Friday of every month, at 9.45 am, at the Mulgrave Country Club, with a great range of guest speakers entertaining members and guests. In addition to the monthly meetings, there are various groups which members can choose to join, such as Computer Group, Walking Group, Jazz Group, and Chat Group. Anyone interested in finding out more should contact Tony on (03) 9560 7968.
The November Delegates Meeting, followed by the AGM, will be held on Tuesday 26 November at Mulgrave Country Club, Wheelers Hill. * Please note: This meeting is on a Tuesday, not a Monday.

SPRINGING INTO ACTION The President Rennus Crossley It will not be long now until we welcome our Victorian Spring, first with the lovely yellow wattle blossom and then the other colourful spring flowers. I expect that this means we are all now busy planning outings that will embrace Spring maybe to the tulip farm, which never disappoints. A lot of you enjoyed the friendship days both at Mornington and Pakenham, especially at Pakenham with a beautiful sunny winter day. Our very own Brenda Rose looked a picture in her black and yellow outfit. It is always pleasing at these events to see that some go to a little trouble to add to the fun. Hopefully you are all thinking and considering how you can help on the committee. Nomination forms for next year will be available at the next delegates meeting.
Vice-president David West inducts the first female member of Wheelers Hill Probus, Raelene Smedley.
Yours in Probus friendship, Rennus Crossley, PAV President.

A remarkable pilgrimage Sandakan Day - the 75th anniversary of Sabah Borneo Armchair Travel THE Sandakan Day Memorial Service marked on 15 August continues to bring Australia, Britain and the people of Sabah closer together by the year. The annual service is held to remember the more than 2400 Australian and British prisoners-of-war (POW) who lost their lives while incarcerated at the Sandakan POW Camp and during the infamous death marches to Ranau in 1945 during WWII. By early 1942 the Japanese had cut a swathe through Malaya, culminating in the calamitous fall of Singapore, and capturing thousands of Allied troops - nearly 15,000 Australians among them. They were held in prisoner of war compounds at Changi, on the eastern side of Singapore. The Japanese viewed their prisoners as a powerful pool of dirt-cheap labour, and from here the men were dispatched to wherever the Japanese war effort needed them. In July of 1942, a large group of Australian prisoners, known as B Force, was sent to Sandakan in what was then known as British North Borneo. Between 1942 and 1943, about 2700 Allied servicemen passed through the gates of the Sandakan Camp. However, a number were transferred during 1943 and
1944, leaving 1793 Australians and 641 British. In the dying days of the war, as defeat of the Japanese Army was imminent, most of the prisoners who remained in the camp were sent on three separate forced marches. These became known as death marches. Only six Australians, all escapees from the marches, eventually returned home. Not a single British soldier survived. In 2020 the 75th anniversary of Sandakan Day will be remembered with a very special Commemorative Service at the Sandakan Memorial Park and we will be there for a special wreath laying. Why not join us on the third largest island in the world as we embark on our 11-day tour of Sabah Borneo combining
this very special day along with all that Sabah North Borneo has to offer. After flying into the state capital of Kota Kinabalu we are given a warm greeting by our friendly English-speaking guide before transferring to our five-star accommodation. Edging the waterfront and offering stunning sea and city views, Le MĂŠridien is an urban sanctuary in the beating heart of Kota Kinabalu’s central business, retail and entertainment district. Our first day provides us with a nostalgic rail journey on a steam train straight out of the 1900s, featuring five fully refurbished colonial-style carriages that can accommodate a total of 180 passengers. Along the way, we get to soak in the green vistas of sprawling paddy fields, traditional village homes on stilts and buffaloes ambling in the distance. On board, we are treated to a rare delight, a tiffin-style lunch. This evening we experience local cuisine and a culture show. It’s now time to get up close and personal with the amazing fauna and flora of Borneo as we travel across to Sandakan. Our close encounters will take place at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, Rainforest Discovery Centre, Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary and while cruising along the mighty Kinabatangan River. The Kinabatangan is home to Borneo’s ‘Big Five’, Bornean Pygmy Elephant, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Estuarine Crocodile,
Orangutan and Proboscis Monkey. While still on the east coast we pay visits to The English Tea House, Agnes Keith’s House Museum and St. Michael’s and All Angels Church featuring the beautiful stained-glass windows donated by Australia to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of WWII. Back on the west coast our full day tour today takes us up to Mount Kinabalu to the Sabah Tea Plantation in Ranau. Although breathtaking, our journey today is also one of heartbreak as we pay our respects at the Ranau POW Camp Site and make a heartfelt stop at the beautiful Kundasang War Memorial and Gardens (Australian Garden, British Garden, Borneo Garden and Contemplation Garden). Our second last day takes us across to Labuan Island, home to the Commonwealth WW11 Cemetery and home to 3908 graves of soldiers mostly Australian and British who passed away at either the POW Camps, Death Marches or in battle. We also visit Surrender Point where the 32nd Japanese Southern Army surrendered to the 9th Division Australian Imperial Forces on 9 September 1945 which led to the end of World War II in Borneo. Kota Kinabalu provides many cultural sites, culinary delights and shopping experiences at both the waterfront and street markets plus then boutique shops. So why not join us on this remarkable pilgrimage to Sabah Borneo in August 2020.

Wandering back to Inverloch THE Probian Wanderers so enjoyed their time at Inverloch in 2016, they returned in February 2019 for their 36th event marking their 18th year of activities. Although numbers were down somewhat on average attendance, they had six members attending for the first time. The Wanderers now have 235 members listed, representing 54 Probus clubs around Victoria. Weather-wise, the group was presented with a mixed bag - from wind, to some rain to beautiful sunshine. The one very windy night saw caravanners rolling up awnings, adjusting pegs and ropes, just in time for the wind to drop to a breeze. The rain failed to dampen activities, but on occasions caused members to seek cover. And, of course, the beautiful days, at the end of the week’s stay, allowed a drive home in warm sunlight - seems to be the normal pattern for later events! A big ‘thank you’ was extended to Christian and staff at Inverloch Big 4 Park for looking after the group. Those who stayed at the weekends were entertained by the virtual ‘flood’ of young children, mostly on their relatively new bicycles (gifts from Santa?). Although one needed caution crossing internal roads, it was a delight to see young Australia in motion, rather than an unfortunate norm of sitting, manipulating small screens! Several of the fittest enjoyed morning walks along the foreshore to the CBD, Screw Creek, to Townsend Bluff, through Thompson Estate Nature Reserve - and yep, they got lost on the way back from the reserve! A spectacular drive along the Bunurong Coast to Cape Patterson is not to be missed, with a stop at The Caves, Eagles
Nest, Shack Bay and The Oaks. Some members were lucky enough to visit Eagles Nest in time to witness a team of volunteers setting up for a search for dinosaur and fossil remains, and hear a talk by a Monash University lady unfortunately interrupted when the heavens opened, precipitating a rush for cover. Wednesday, traditional picnic day, and a last-minute change of plans found the group dining at Tarwin Lower, occupying what is claimed to be the longest picnic table in the Southern Hemisphere - a later Google search failed to confirm such claim, but it is pretty long! Thereafter, they were treated to ‘tea and bikkies’ by a lovely couple at their holiday house, then that couple led a motorcade tour of the beauty spots of Venus Bay. That evening, at happy hour, the Wanderers were visited by a number of members of both Inverloch Probus, with president Vince Baskerville, and Andersons Inlet Probus, with president David Paroissien and wife Margaret. They were made most welcome to their locality by the sea. Again, as is tradition, the Wanderers dined out - a dinner at Esplanade Hotel, Inverloch, and a luncheon at RSL Leongatha, both economical and good tucker, both to be recommended. Evenings were devoted to home movies of Norway, Finland, and Estonia, and a trivia night, always good for a laugh. In all, Inverloch was voted another successful event. Next, the Wanderers visit Healesville in October and Bellarine in February, 2020. Full details can be found elsewhere in the Probian, and on the ProbusVic web-site - www.probusvic.com.au

The Croft is a country-style garden situated in a valley overlooking Phillip Island and Western Port Bay. The owners, Rex and Dani Swindel-Hurst, have been working on this garden for many years, taking inspirations from other lands they have visited. It is a garden that has structure, views, a wide variety of plants (both native and exotic), and it offers “moments of delight” from season to season. Visitors are very happy just to sit and contemplate in the many resting areas of this three-acre plus garden. Gardening methods are largely organic and encourage wildlife. Features include: a topiary garden, a rose and dahlia “room”, an herbaceous border, a native walkway, an ornamental lake, a conservatory, a “potager”, many formal hedges and other box hedging with quirky creations! The garden is not open to the public but does hold morning or afternoon teas for garden interest groups to help raise money for a local Balnarring respite centre for families in crisis. This is a nurturing garden, with space for all: insects, birds, small creatures and people. We welcome you to come and share it.

Milestone for Dandenong THE Dandenong Ladies Probus Club’s 25th year Celebration Lunch was held on the same date it was founded - 6 June - at the Dandenong Club, where members met for the first time and still do today on the first Monday of the month. Foundation member certificates were presented to June Gorma, Anne Drury and Joy McHugh by club president Sandra Burman, who then asked them to cut the cake. Tom Torrence, Probus Ambassador for 9820 Region, gave a talk on the early years of the club and then presented the Probus Anniversary 25th certificate to Sandra. Dandenong is now a multicultural city and the club keeps membership above 60, which shows Probus is a need in the community for friendship activities and a chat - as it did 25 years ago.

Grimshaw toasts 20 years ALL the foundation members attending the Grimshaw Probus Club’s 20th birthday celebrations were presented with new “Foundation Member” badges and a certificate to mark this special occasion, which included the cutting of a special 20th birthday cake. Everyone had a wonderful day, organised by the committee. At the end, Ian O’Brien spoke, thanking early members and the committee for the hard work in the formation of the club. Particular thanks were given to Noel and Pat French, who organised many of the new members through letter drops etc. Ian also reflected on the many trips where club members had fun and wonderful experiences together. In 1999, Bundoora Rotary decided another Probus Club was required in the area as they had already formed Bundoora, Watsonia, McLeod and Greenwood clubs. But they all had full membership with big waiting lists. So the Probus Club of Grimshaw was proposed to be formed. The Rotary members in charge of the formation was a past president and member of the Bundoora Rotary Club. A public meeting at the McLeod Hall was held on Friday 28 May 1999. The books were closed at 10.20am and later in the meeting and members were advised that the total registrations were 117. Hence the Probus Club of Grimshaw was formed officially on 10 June 1999, with a waiting list established. An election confirmed the executive positions and a
committee formed. Now 20 years on, the club still meets at the same venue with a great number of the original 117 still members. Unfortunately it havslost some good friends along the way but the support and friendship established in the club goes on. There is a great bunch of members, who hope the club continues and prospers for years to come.

Going Cuckoo for anniversary PATTERSON Lakes Combined Probus members celebrated the club’s 30th anniversary with a luncheon at The Cuckoo Restaurant at Olinda in May. Members enjoyed a special sunny daytrip amongst the autumn scenery of the Dandenong Ranges, sang along, yodeled and played the cowbells to accordion music and thoroughly enjoyed their occasion. Patterson Lakes started out as two clubs - Ladies and Men’s, before joining together when membership dwindled along the way. Members continue to enjoy a range of activities offering fun and friendship and hope their club continues on in this way into the future.

Warmed by Marysville magic WITH a Melbourne winter well and truly making itself felt, a bus trip to Marysville for the Knoxfield Ladies Probus Club warranted layers of clothing in anticipation of rain and freezing cold winds. Members were not disappointed in that aspect, as on the walk to Steavenson Falls, there was indeed ice on the ground along with puddles of rainwater. However after a warming lunch at the famous Marysville Bakery, some of the group were well insulated to attempt the walk to the Falls. The group was well rewarded by the cascades of water tumbling down the 122 metres, with the last drop more than 21 metres. The first track was cut in 1866, and the Falls were named after John Steavenson the then Assistant Commissioner of Roads and Bridges who visited the site now known as Marysville in 1862. The Falls Reserve is covered in dense forest made up of pure stands of Mountain Ash which regenerated after the 1939 bushfires, with a mixture of various eucalypts as well as several species of fern. Earlier in the day club members visited Bruno’s Art and Sculpture Garden. Bruno’s home, gallery and garden were completely destroyed in the 7 February 2009 bushfires that devastated Marysville. Bruno has rebuilt his home and studio, and repaired and restored his wonderful clay fired fantastical life sized figures in the extensive garden. Unfortunately it was still raining after Bruno’s talk on the history of the gallery and his harrowing experiences trying to rescue the artworks from the fire,
At Steavenson Falls in Marysville. so the garden walk was enjoyed though hurried. The theatre night at the Ferntree Gully 1812 Theatre did not disappoint with their production of Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap”. The talented cast held the attention of the group to the last reveal in this famous record breaking “who done it”. Another visit to the 1812 Theatre featured a Sunday afternoon of silent movies. Laurel and Hardy and Buster Keaton accompanied by a live jazz band was great fun. The last outing for June was to Churchill Island’s working farm “Time Unwinds”
Members take in the view at the Nobbies Centre, Phillip Island. which consists of a cafe and gift shop, the pioneering Rogers family cottages built in 1862, beautifully restored and furnished, along with the farm animals and pretty cottage gardens. After lunch it was on to the Nobbies Centre on Phillip Island, wandering the boardwalks, contemplated Seal Rock and yes, again perused the gift shop. Bus drive Roger drove along the cliff road so the group could see the numerous nesting boxes provided for the penguins, before heading for the Chocolate factory which just happened to be on the way home.

A home that’s right on the money.

30 years in the making AFTER an advertisement in the local paper, looking for members, the Rye Ladies Probus was born in March 1989. The membership at the time of the first meeting was 100, with 84 enthusiastic ladies attending. Not much has changed in the last 30 years, the members are still enthusiastic, friendly and helpful. The membership hovers between 110 and 120 and the ladies enjoy many outings and club events. There is walking, patchwork and craft, water aerobics, gardening, the book club and conversation group. Cards and games, lo-impact aerobics, mah-jong, Monday Munchies, music and walkie talkies. There are one, two and three day outings, and a group is journeying to Italy later this year. Rye Ladies Probus celebrated its 30th birthday at the Sorrento Golf Club on 25 March 2019. Eight of the 11 founding members (who still enjoy the club) were present and were presented with a corsage as a memento. The guest speakers were Gal Hedley-Traa and Libby Wilson from Rotary and Pamela Grey from Probus Association Victoria. The ‘Pearly Queens’ entertained the gathering with some specially written songs and were much appreciated. Ninety three members attended the lunch and enjoyed bubbles, fine food, entertainment, wonderful birthday cake, fellowship and laughs.

Mallee to the Flinders Ranges THIRTY members of The Combined Probus Club of Monash Central gathered at the car park of the Mountain View Hotel Glen Waverley in the early morning cold gloom of Tuesday 21 May, all eager and ready to commence a Silo Art Trail and Flinders Ranges Tour The first day was a long one to Sea Lake and Lake Tyrrell via the 200 kilometre long art-silo trail. What a magnificent collection of massive art the trail is, and a wonderful positive for the surrounding towns. The group ended the day with a truly magnificent sight of the sun setting over Lake Tyrrell with obliging clouds augmenting the spectacle. What a great first day. The following day they viewed two more groups of silo art and also visited the Mallee Tourist and Heritage Centre, which is a superb collection of rural artefacts and historical documents. Members were provided with a delicious morning tea to cap it off and followed this with a lunchtime visit to the historic Pines House and 2000 square metres of garden. From here it was on to Loxton and the Caudo vineyard and cellar door for tastings on the sunny banks of the Murray, concluding the day at Waikerie. Day three was to Wilpena Pound via Burra and Hawker - two interesting and historic towns where members enjoyed sights and displays. The next day they traversed over dry creek beds in Brachina gorge with guide Ian from Wilpena, who showed them views over the ranges, the famous Cazneaux tree,
yellow footed rock wallabies and aboriginal rock art. The group then travelled via Leigh Creek township to Arkaroola for a twonight stop, without doubt the highlight was the four-wheel drive on the ‘Ridge Top Tour - magnificent vistas and terrifyingly precarious steep situations; an event not to be missed. In the afternoon some members flew over the ranges and Lake Frome in the beautiful sunshine and many viewed the wonders of the clear night sky through the astronomical observatory. On the way back towards Port Augusta, the group enjoyed a sumptuous outback platter at the famous Prairie Hotel, Parachilna, a ride on the Pichi Richi train to Quorn and a visit to the outstanding Wadlata Outback Centre, where they could have spent considerably more time at this informative and excellently presented collection of displays.
The last day, the first that was not warm and sunny, was to the historic Bungaree Station, which is still in the hands of the family that established it in 1841! This was followed by a visit to Martindale Hall, a Georgian styled mansion complete with original art, decoration and contents. And finally, on to the fascinating
Magpie and Stump hotel for lunch in the resurrected 1850 building and a superbly catered lunch, which was in keeping with the fabulous country hospitality at all the morning tea and lunch stops. St Kilda locks Bill in for life BILL Lock has been made a life member of the Probus Club of St Kilda for sustained outstanding service to the club. His tireless work exemplifies true spirit of Probus - friendship, fellowship and fun. These attributes have been augmented by willingness to advance ideals of Probus, in particular ensuring new members - the lifeblood of Probus - are made welcome.
Bill’s ongoing commitment has been constant from day one. Inducted at April 2007 meeting by President Barbara Dibbin, he immediately assumed position of membership secretary. Bill had two terms as president, five years as secretary and 12 years as membership secretary. His contribution is far reaching, continuing, and greater than the sum of its parts.
Life honour for Graham GRAHAM Page was presented with a life membership of the Combined Probus Club of Ocean Grove at the club’s general meeting on 24 June 2019. He has been an outstanding member for many years and has supported the club totally throughout his membership. Graham joined in 2005 and became secretary and committee member for many years. He supported his wife Glennis’ who was president of the club in 2006, and has been actively involved in many club activities such as the Walking Group and Dine Outs. For many years he conducted a segment at each general meeting that he called “Pete’s Mailbag which was most successful and which was enjoyed by all the members. Graham is a highly respected member, a thorough gentleman and a person most suitable to be awarded a life membership of the club.

The wonders of Japan ON 22 May, 28 members of the Berwick Central Combined Probus Club flew with Singapore Airlines to Tokyo to begin a 17day bus tour of Southern Japan. The day of arrival was a free day so many of used the time to visit the Mejiro Garden, which is an oasis in suburban Tokyo. Despite its large population Tokyo still has large areas of greenery as members discovered next day in visiting Meiji shrine. It is set in a 170 acre forest. Tokyo also boasts 144 acres at Gyoen National Garden and 285 acres at the Emperors Palace grounds, all within central Tokyo. The afternoon was spent at the amazing communications tower structure that is known as the Skytree. At 634 metres tall it was the world’s tallest structure until Dubai. It is an engineering marvel having the strength to withstand earthquakes and monsoons. Just standing beneath it was a delight. The views from the observation deck are stunning, and of course there is a glass floor to peer down from . Next day the group travelled 150km north to Nikko and the Kegon Waterfall. Two elavators holding 30 people each take you down from the heights to the viewing platform near the base of the falls 97 metres below. On day four, the group departed Tokyo driving via Yokohama along the coast to Hakone before turning inland to Lake Ashi and Mount Fuji. Clear skies and sunny days enabled them to see the mountain at its best, some snow still on the upper reaches. It was very fortunate, as Mt Fuji has a reputation of hiding in cloud. Day five had the group visiting the 5th station before moving west to Matsumoto Castle and on to Nagano. Day six provided a highlight with a visit to the Monkey Park hot springs at Jigokudani. The sign said there were no monkeys present but they pressed on anyway, to then be delighted as monkeys appeared in number out of the forest and down the mountain to where we were. Japan is 75 per cent mountain terrain and in driving through the mountains that is exactly what you do - via tunnel after tunnel. Bridges span the gorges so that the journey is relatively straight and flat. No mountain climbing twisting roads here. Same goes for the trains. The Bullet train near the end of the trip went from Osaka to Hiroshima (337km) in one hour 23 minutes with two intermediate stops, with an average speed 239kmh (we are so far behind).
FREE
In Kanazawa, the group visited the Kenrokuen Garden, one of the top three in all of Japan. Now over 200 years old it boasts 9000 trees all in a lakeside setting. There was also a visit to old Samurai houses. In the following days, the Probians visited the beautiful Golden Pavillion in its garden setting, the amazing 1000 Tori Gate shrine at Mt Irani that continues all the way up the sacred mountain and the huge Todaiji Temple, world’s largest wooden building at 88 metres wide and 47 metres tall that houses the great Buddha. More castles were to come with visits to Osaka and Himeji Castles. Climbing up to the upper rooms was mandatory but the stairs were so narrow and steep it proved very testing. Coming down was even worse many choosing to come down sideways. After castles the group then had the ultra-modern Umeda Sky Building where at 173 metres above ground you traverse a walkway suspended between two Office Towers. Known as the floating observatory it certainly heightens senses. The last stop was at Hiroshima overnight from the base at Osaka. Viewing the area first hand and hearing the stories of that day was distressing as was the museum visit but essential for all. Hundreds of Japanese students were there too, learning about the history of that era. Japan was a memorable trip is recommended to everyone and one thoroughly enjoyed by all. The group saw a lot, experienced a lot and took home some wonderful memories.

Nagambie and beyond THE Combined Probus Club of Maroondah members lunched at Nagambie, admiring the beautiful placid lake, on which many regattas have been held. They then travelled to Noorilim Estate, which is halfway between Nagambie and Murchison. The homestead is Italianate in style and was built in1879 for William Irving Winter MLC, a wealthy pastoralist and member of the Victorian Legislative Council (1884-1901). He was the youngest son of John Winter, whose family was one of the largest pastoral landholders in Australia - by 1868 the Winters owned about a quarter of million acres, which was divided between four sons. The architect James Gall was commissioned to build a home, which represents one of the finest examples of Victorian Italianate architecture in Australia. The interior of the home has been beautifully restored with beautiful tiled floors, furniture and art works. Over its long his6tory, its 11 owners have used the estate as a sheep and cattle station, a thoroughbred horse stud, a private residence, and most recently as a vineyard. It is surrounded by more than 12 acres of landscaped botanical gardens, listed in the top 90 historic gardens by the Victorian Government. This was wonderful day trip!

Dust settles on silo art trip THE Combined Woodend Club in May had an enjoyable trip for five days. The group of nine, with two from Kyneton Probus, saw six massive silo artworks, all different and extremely impressive. They travelled with Trips All Round (a local company) and driver Sally gave lovely morning and afternoon teas. They stayed at ‘The Boulevard Motor Inn’, where the staff were very friendly and meals excellent. The group went to the Woodsies Gemshop and went into their Aladdin’s
Cave where the collector of all the gems made an appearance. Next was the Australian Inland Botanical Gardens - very impressive, then the Mildura Chocolate Factory where the disabled make the chocolate, although it is only a shop front. On arriving back, Mildura put on a treat (although not for the farmers) with dust storm all the different colours was an impressive sight. Next day the group went to Wentworth Goal and Pioneer World Museum, then
Orange World where after the tractor ride around, the chap remembered all the names. Then it was on to a two-hour cruise on the PC Melbourne, where the Captian Angus, an 18 year old, was celebrating his graduation as captain and his first passengers. He did a marvellous job on his commentary. Next stop was at ‘Trentham Estate’ and on way back an Olive Farm. On the way home they stopped in at Barraport at the ‘Spanner Man’ - John
Piccoli who is in a wheelchair and makes massive garden features with spanners using pullies to make his fine craft.

Cop camps helping kids JOHN Moloney from Cops & Kids gave an excellent address about a truly wonderful program at the June meeting of Ballarat North Probus Club. Cops & Kids runs four-day camps in Ballarat for children who have had cancer, a life threatening illness or have had contact through tragic circumstances with Victoria Police - fatal car accident, suicide etc. The camps are supported by the Royal Children’s Hospital and the general community. Sixty children, 60 carers and many other volunteers such as drivers, cooks etc are involved in the camps. The group is accommodated at Sovereign Hill and the main purpose is to give the parents of the children a four-day break. The children visit Sovereign Hill, the Ballarat Wildlife Park, go to movies and get to wear a “police shirt“. They also enjoy riding in police vehicles, have helicopter and plane rides, do face painting, go on jumping castles, visit Sebastopol Fire Station, go tenpin bowling and swim at the Federation University pool. Volunteers need to have a working with children card and be subject to a police check.

Painting the town red IN late June, over 60 members of The East Malvern Combined Probus Club celebrated winter by having a dinner dance and spit roast at the club’s meeting rooms in East Malvern. The theme of the night was “Paint The Town Red”. It was a great night with tables decorated in red and each table had strings of lights on them. This gave the whole room a fantastic look when people walked in. All members dressed in red. The food was excellent, with a two course spit roast just what is required on a very cold night. All were entertained again by duo Maisie Lane Tsami and Michael Bray singing all the well-known songs, making guests get up and dance.
This event happens with the great support of the East Malvern Community Bendigo Bank and the club was lucky to have the manager of the bank Ruth Hall attend. This is a great annual event and gets better each year. The night ended with members asking when the next one was. It is truly a night of fun, friendship and fellowship.

A Will is only one piece of the puzzle By Andrew Simpson National Head of Wills & Estate Planning Over the years I have spoken with many Probians about estate planning and what it takes to get their life admin in order. A surprise to most was that it doesn’t just stop with a Will. It’s also about planning for circumstances where medical and financial decisions need to be made for us. Forward planning makes sense. We do this with our finances, with property arrangements and also our superannuation – so why don’t we do it with our lives? The unavoidable fact is, failing to do so puts your family and kids in an extremely stressful situation down the track. I can assure you estate planning doesn’t have to be as daunting or labour intensive as you may think. There are 5 vital documents we should all have. A standard Will A Will is a legal document that enables you to determine how your ‘estate’ is to be distributed after your death. This includes your money, property, shares, investments and possessions. Enduring Power of Attorney (POA) An Enduring Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows you to nominate one or more persons to act on your behalf for legal, financial and personal decisions. This can start when
you decide and continues to be effective if you lose the ability to make your own decisions. Appointing a Medical Treatment Decision Maker The appointment of a Medical Treatment Decision Maker is different to a POA, as they are tasked specifically with medical decisions if you are ill or injured and can no longer make your own decisions. Advance Care Directive You are also able to prepare a second document called an Advance Care Directive which allows you to record your wishes regarding treatment and communicate them to your Medical Treatment Decision Maker so that they have an understanding of what is important to you. ;
other preferences around burial or cremation
;
the location of your assets so your executors may easily find them
;
who you would like notified about your death.
Statement of Wishes A Statement of Wishes is a separate document to your Will. A Statement of Wishes is not binding but can assist your executors when it comes time to administer your estate. At Maurice Blackburn, we store your Statement of Wishes with your Will so that executors have everything they need to administer your estate. Things that might be included in a Statement of Wishes: ;
music that you wish to be played at your funeral
;
who your pall bearers will be
;
who will scatter your ashes
So, as you can see, there is a lot more to life and estate planning than a Will. To help you make a start, Maurice Blackburn has developed a unique package called MyLife Documents™. It allows you to prepare these five essential documents easily, in one go, under the consultation of an expert Wills & Estates lawyer.
This is exceptional value. In my experience, the cost of not planning your estate is far greater than the cost of planning it. So don’t put it off any longer. By making one simple phone call today, you can take the pressure off your family and loved ones down the track. Call 1800 519 740 to make an appointment with our expert lawyers *Applies to standard drafting only.

The fantastic thing is, MyLife Documents™ is available for a fixed price*, and generous 60 day terms are available.

Look through ambo history What is that plant? AT the recent meeting of the Heathmont Ladies Probus Club’s Gardening Group, Kerin asked for help in identifying a plant she had found in her garden. No one had seen the likes of it before. A few days later at the “I.T. for Fun” meeting, it was suggested to try to download was seeing an actual Ashford Litter, an early wheeled ambulance. She recalled her grandfather recounting how his 20 year old brother, following a severe horse accident on the Queensland farm in 1906, was carried on such a device being pulled by a horse and supported by runners taking turns over six or seven miles to hospital. Unfortunately, he did not survive. Today, our community is blessed to have so much expertise and equipment available should the need arise and can be thankful also that there are paramedics willing to do such a job which, sadly at times, is at increasing risk to their own safety.
The perfect day trip for your club.

EARLIER in the year 18 members of the Probus Club of Wantirna Heights visited the Ambulance Museum Victoria. Although the museum has been located in Bayswater for over four years, very few were aware of its existence. All were quite impressed with the array of vintage vehicles and memorabilia on display. On arrival, a beautiful, homemade morning tea was served. This was followed by an informative and entertaining talk by two experienced (now retired) ‘ambos’ with many anecdotes from earlier days. They highlighted the amazing advancements during the different eras from very basic beginnings in the 1880s to current day. The original purpose of the ambulance service was solely to transport a patient as quickly as possible to the nearest hospital. These days there are highly trained paramedics with state of the art equipment on board their vehicles (and also aircraft). Lifesaving diagnostics, medications and treatment can be initiated immediately thus saving many lives and limiting damage from heart attack, stroke etc. The group was able to examine the well laid-out displays of equipment and vehicles from early beginnings to more recent times. Vinnies volunteers help out THEY put food on tables. They heat homes in winter. They put school shoes on growing feet. They find safe accommodation for families escaping domestic violence. They listen to concerns, see the signs of crisis and respond when it happens, always without judgement. This is the work of St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria’s (Vinnies) home visitation member volunteers. There are 3411 member volunteers hard at work across the state and they are a very special part of a very special mission: ensuring that vulnerable people have - or keep - a roof overhead. They have been providing localised community support in Victoria for more than 160 years, since the St Vincent de Paul Society was first established in Australia. The home visitation program is a core service of Vinnies, inspired by the work of the charity’s founder - a brave and determined 20-year-old university student, Blessed Frederic Ozanam - who formed St Vincent de Paul Society in 1833 in Paris. Frederic’s first act of charity was delivering firewood to a widow whose husband had died in winter. He then made it is personal mission to help people, as hunger, disease, poverty and hardship gripped the country. Today, Australia is facing very similar challenges. More than 774,000 Victorians currently live in poverty and almost 200,000 of them are children, while women comprise the majority of adults living in poverty. While the drivers of poverty and its potential solutions are complex, Vinnies’ home visitation service, which is comprised of localised volunteer groups or ‘conferences’ across Victoria, is a legacy of the ‘love thy neighbour’ sentiment that was central to Frederic’s values. It is designed to give people a hand up and to prevent crisis. In a world that moves so fast and often leaves a growing cohort of vulnerable people in its wake the service provides a genuine safety net. Vinnies Southern Central Council President and long-term Vinnies member volunteer Herbert Portanier says: “It is a real privilege being invited to go into people’s homes to sit with people and listen to stories and to be able to provide whatever assistance we can to ensure that they continue to have a roof over their head.” This service shows no signs of slowing down. According to the latest statistics from the Australian Bureau of Statistics

Vinnies volunteers help build lives.
(ABS) as part of 2015-2016 Household Expenditure Survey, the average Australian family spent $1,425 a week on housing, food and education costs. “There is a lot of need out there,” adds Herbert, “and it’s a terrible reality that many people and, often, families suffer in silence. That’s why what we do is so important.” Cumulative pressure on household budgets translates to very real and desperate calls for help from people on the frontline - and thankfully, with the generous support of Vinnies’ donors - conference

“With the ever-increasing demand on our services, Vinnies needs volunteers now more than ever. I speak from experience when I say that becoming a member volunteer is also an opportunity to become part of a great team and the hours you volunteer are up to you.
One thing’s for certain, says Herbert, every time you are invited into someone’s home you are a step closer towards understanding the lives and circumstances of a growing number of vulnerable Victorians. “It’s incredibly rewarding seeing what a difference a food hamper or petrol voucher can make to people who are struggling with the rising daily costs. We don’t just help pay the rent, utility bills or school uniforms. We help build lives as well as a community of care. “I guarantee that it will change your life.”

Tino guest garden guru TINO Carnevale from Gardening Australia is the Garden Guru for the 2019 Drouin Lions Club Gippsland Garden and Home Expo. This annual event is the second largest in Victoria, with over 150 attractive and innovative sites, enjoyed by a crowd of over 6000 with displays and sales stands. A great family day out featuring children’s activities, music, demonstrations and catering, the Expo will be held at Lardner Park in Warragul on 12-13 October. Born and bred in Tasmania, Tino’s lifelong interest in plants and gardening stems from growing up on his family’s small farm in Southern Tasmania, helping to tend its vineyard, olive grove and extensive vegetable garden. As well as being a presenter on ABC Television’s Gardening Australia for a decade, Tino writes a weekly column for the Tasmanian newspaper The Mercury and also articles for the Gardening Australia Magazine. He has worked at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens and still films there regularly. He now also does weekly radio with ABC 936, carrying on one of the oldest gardening talkback shows in the world after the retirement of Peter Cundall. He is active in community programs and events and gives regular talks to gardening groups at conferences and festivals around Australia. Although he has working experience in commercial agriculture, especially cherry

Next stage of Alzheimer’s drug trial PENINSULA Therapeutic and Research Group is part of an international trial testing a drug that aims to slow down cognitive decline in people with Alzheimer’s disease. The trial is recruiting 450 people, aged 60-85 living with mild cognitive impairment or mild Alzheimer’s disease. It aims to demonstrate that the drug, Anavex 2-73, shows benefits for those living with the disease. Dr Jennifer Grunfeld, principal investigator at Peninsula Therapeutic and Research Group, said she became interested in this trial following the promising results seen in an earlier Australian study, which achieved significant cognitive improvement in some participants. For many participants in the previous trial, there was no deterioration in their cognitive function. Some participants
regained functions previously lost, such as the ability to paint and play the piano, while a person who re-sat the driving exam successfully regained their license. The drug is a disease-modifying therapy and this trial will test whether the drug can stabilize the progression of the disease. The trial is being run by American biopharmaceutical company, Anavex Life Services. If the trial is successful and Anavex 2-73 can modify the course of the disease, it would be a complete game
changer in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Dr Jennifer Grunfeld, who has been running clinical trials in mental health and dementia for over 15 years said: “It is exciting to be able to provide patients in and around the Peninsula with access to clinical studies trialing the latest medications. Peninsula Therapeutic and Research Group are located at 137 Frankston Flinders Road in Frankston and are currently looking for patients with a diagnosis of mild Alzheimer’s Disease to participate in their clinical trials. Patients do not require a referral to be seen at the clinic, there is no cost for consultations and travel costs are reimbursed. If you have any questions or are interested in participating in one of their research trials, please call the research nurse on 03 9770 1579 or email info@ptrg.com.au
Toilet seat solves problems THE Bidet Shop customer Mabel suffers with arthritis and a painful back condition but has found a bidet has made the everyday task a much simpler. “It’s marvelous! I’ve always wanted a ‘paperless’ bidet in my bathroom and I wish I found it years ago! Mabel said. “The bidet simply replaced the existing toilet seat and automatically cleaned without toilet paper. The friendly staff explained that the bidet toilet seat has many health benefits as well as the comfort factors of a heated seat and other features, she said. The bidet can be used in two simple steps. Press the bottom/feminine wash button and the bidet provides a stream of warm water to clean thoroughly. Then with just the push of another button, warm air gently dries without the need for toilet paper. Mabel said that although The Bidet Shop offered to send out a brochure pack, she decided to order a bidet straight away. Well it arrived a few days later. She installed the seat herself easily and as she had been told, it fitted perfectly on her original toilet bowl. “It is the best investment I have made in my personal health and hygiene in years and no longer finds going to the toilet an issue. “Give it a go! she says. “I did and I couldn’t be happier. For more information or to purchase call The Bidet Shop on 03 9081 0789. Vic Probian readers may qualify to have their Bidet fully funded. Please call us to ask how.

Retirement living benefits Security, peace of mind and affordability are among the reasons people choose to downsize to a retirement living village. Then there are the benefits that come from being part of a community - a sense of connection, access to social activities, events and common spaces that make it easy to get to know neighbours and make new friends. ACH Group Village Coordinator Natalie Webb says retirement living is a smart choice for many people as they look to downsize or to start a new chapter. “Many people are drawn to retirement villages because they offer an easy, hasslefree lifestyle,” she says. “You can forget about house and garden maintenance, which leaves more time for you to focus on the things you enjoy. “You can still retain your independence it’s your own home, after all - but help is at hand if you need, via the Village Manager, so you know you have that support.” Geni Hunt, 75, has lived at ACH Group’s St Thomas Retirement Living Village for eight years. When she retired she moved to Melbourne from Sydney to be closer to her two sisters, and was looking for a place that suited her budget and the opportunity to be part of a community. “Because I had a number of health issues at the time, and I didn’t know anyone in Melbourne, it was very important to me to move into an inbuilt community, and that is what I found here.” Geni is actively involved at St Thomas as Secretary of the Residents Committee, and has started a meditation group that is
attended by residents from nearby villages. She also drew on her years of experience in the education system as a teacher and leader and in administration to organise the library at St Thomas. “What I like about this place is that you can choose to be involved if you want to, but you don’t have to. "Some prefer to do their own thing, others are hugely involved. "Here, you can get to know everyone well if you want to. "We’re all quite neighbourly and help each other, and I’m so glad that I found this place. "I’m very happy here.” Geni is committed to staying fit and healthy and attends weekly exercises as well as sessions with her exercise physiologist, a program of weights and stretch bands. Units at ACH Group’s St Thomas and Bedford Heights retirement living village are now available for viewing. Prices start at $420,000 at St Thomas and $593,000 at Bedford Heights. For a limited time, fees and charges will be waived for the first six months - a saving of $5729.36. To register your interest in a tour at St Thomas, please contact Natalie Webb (03) 9802 8118 or email NWebb@ach.org. au. Visitor Information Centre for a list of local bird watching tours. When you stay at the park, you can choose from a comfortable cabin, villa or caravan site, some with exceptional views of the Edward River. Many repeat guests find it ideal, that once you’re here, you can swim, boat, fish, relax, and enjoy each other’s company, all without leaving the park. BIG4 Deni also has dog friendly sites outside of peak and high season at the manager’s discretion, just ask prior to arrival. The park is beautifully landscaped and even has its own pontoon boat for hire, a camp kitchen for gathering in, outdoor barbecues with great happy hour views and a conference room perfect for movie nights. Their family friendly facilities include a brand new heated water park with dumping bucket, water slide, two swimming pools (one heated and the new resort pool has beach entry and lap swimming lanes), mini golf course, jumping pillow, playground, tennis/basketball court and a giant chess board. It’s a friendly and affordable place for all holidaymakers including families, retirees, skiers and fishermen.

Plenty of options on pets Vets&Pets Serena Horg
Maggie Khoumi and Lort Smith foster dog Ronnie.
AS pet lovers, we all agree animals are fantastic companions. You can depend on them for a cuddle whether you are having a great day, or if you are going through a difficult time. The good news is there are many ways to benefit from the human-animal bond. PET ADOPTION Pet ownership, while very rewarding, is a lifelong decision that will has major impacts on everyday life. A cat or dog can live for up to 20 years and they will rely on you for their entire life. Important factors to consider are: the time commitment, appropriate housing for your pet, and the financial commitment. Another thing to consider is what might happen to your pet, should something prevent you from looking after him or her. Some might ask a trusted friend or family member to care for their pet. Should you choose this option, please discuss your wishes with your nominated friend or relative. However, if this option is not possible, Lort Smith has a Pet Legacy Program which can provide you with peace of mind. Should the need arise, Lort Smith will find your beloved pet/s a loving home and provide for all their medical needs for the rest of their days. There are numerous pets available to adopt from various animal welfare organisations throughout Victoria. At Lort Smith we will always have cats and dogs
available for adoption, and sometimes we have smaller animals available, including rabbits, Guinea pigs and ferrets.
FOSTERING A PET If you are looking for part-time pet ownership, then foster caring might be for
you. Foster carers provide temporary care for an animal in a home environment until they are ready for adoption. The length of time in foster care required varies, depending on the type of animal and their needs. The animals in the Lort Smith foster care program are the financial responsibility of Lort Smith. If the animal requires any veterinary care we take responsibility. Additionally we provide all you need including food and bedding. VOLUNTEERING AT A LOCAL ANIMAL WELFARE ORGANISATION Volunteers are an integral part of our organisation. We offer a range of rewarding volunteer opportunities. If you have a few spare hours a week, a love of animals and want to support your local community, this might be a great avenue to explore. Most animal welfare organisation have volunteering opportunities available. PET THERAPY INCURSIONS Not everyone can have a pet, particularly patients and residents in aged-care, hospitals, disability services and other facilities. Lort Smith Pet Therapy (previously known as PALS) has been running for over 30 years. The program coordinates visits from volunteers accompanied by their own specially assessed and approved dogs. The program’s aim is to improve the wellbeing of patients/residents through positive contact with visiting volunteers and their dogs. No matter what your circumstance may be, if you are a pet lover, there are options out there for you to be able to experience the numerous benefits of the human-animal bond. Serena Horg is General Manager of Lort Smith Adoption Centre.

The good word on American language invasion OVER the past decade the vast majority of mail I have received about our use of the language has centred on so-called Americanisms. This can be a very emotional topic, with correspondents bitter about what they have seen as a trend toward an American takeover of our language. In many cases, however, the American spelling that arouses most debate turns out to be a style that the English had used before influences from other countries had taken over. If we want to blame anyone for the way the Americans express themselves,
My Word Laurie Barber perhaps we should blame, or commend, Noah Webster. Here is a man whose name arouses about as much passion as the trend he started. Depending on whose opinion you want to accept, Noah Webster was a visionary, an American hero or a “boring old snoot”. Noah Webster, who had many jobs

including lawyer and journalist, made his early mark on the American language while serving as a schoolteacher. In 1783 he wrote his own textbook, A Grammatican Institute of the English Language, which became the most popular American book of its time. When he was 43, realising that Americans in different parts of the country spoke differently, he started writing the first American dictionary. It was revolutionary in many respects, but particularly because he challenged the English spellings in words such as colour and musick. His book, with 70,000 words, was finished in 1828 when he was 70. Webster, a devout Christian, was said to have used the Bible for many of his definitions. He even published a censored Bible in 1833. But people were too loyal to the King James version for Webster’s version to have much impact. But regardless of what people thought of the man, much of what he wrote made sense. He asked why people should write musick when music served the purpose just as well. Why did we have to write “our” on the end of so many words when the meaning was there with simply “or”? What purpose did the extra letters have at the end of the word programme? To many people the word Webster’s became synonymous with dictionary. But the American people rejected many of his early suggestions, including groop for group, fantom for phantom and wimmen. Misreading Pope’s translation of the Odyssey, Webster came up with the word phantomnation, meaning in his words “an illusion”.
Noah Webster - a language visionary. Australians worry about words such as cookie. Webster borrowed that from the Dutch. Boss also came from the Dutch. Plaza and tornado came from the Spanish. Many of his expressions were English words. Should we write programme or program? Should the authority we have to drive a car be a licence or a license? Do we like colour or color? Would we prefer center to centre? And is jewelry better than jewellery? Over the past ten years the vast majority of mail I have received about our use of the language has centred on so-called Americanisms. lauriebaerbarber.com; lbword@midcoast.com.au
