Residents at a new housing estate in Clyde North estate say they are fed up with mobile phone reception cutting out repeatedly. High Grove Estate residents say they struggle to call emergency services, can't access the internet, and most of the time can't use their phone indoors. They are now rallying their local politician to fix the problem. Caitlin Williams contacted Star News after recently attempting to call triple-zero three times before the call-taker could make any sense of her. After about 15 minutes on the phone, she finally gave an address after hearing her neighbours argue violently. But being a new estate Ms Williams said the police couldn't find where to go and were unable to call her. "They ended up door knocking however many houses until they found me to figure where they were supposed to go," she said. "Thankfully nothing bad happened but if something bad had happened to try and get police or an ambulance there is just a nightmare." Ms Williams spoke of another frustrating experience when she drove to get mobile reception after her internet service had dropped out. "Because it's a new estate there's often building debris everyday so I ran over a nail and got a flat tyre ... couldn't call roadside assist because I had no phone reception." Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale said her office had been contacted consistently on the issue from residents over the past six months. "Our role is to advocate on their behalf to the Federal Government as it falls under their remit," she said. "Recently the Federal Government confirmed that a new tower will be built in Clyde North which will improve mobile coverage." Ms Crugnale added: "Access to mobile phone coverage is a necessary part of life

Mayor prepares to walk for a disability
The Mayor’s Walk for Disability will take the city by storm from 14 - 22 September.
The Mayor’s Walk for Disability is only four weeks away, with City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon excited to complete the nine-day event, raising funds for supported accommodation units in Casey. The walk will kick off on Saturday 14 September from Livvi’s Place in Lyndhurst and wrap up at the Doveton Show on Sunday 22 September. All proceeds raised will go towards the Wolfdene Foundation’s Project 28, which will see the development of supported accommodation for people in Casey who live with a disability and are still
in the care of their ageing parents or carers. The Mayor is encouraging the community to walk with her in September, as she visits various community organisations, businesses and volunteer groups across the city.

Robber sought jail By Cam Lucadou-Wells An apparently bored man has wielded a knife and fork in a "rather pathetic" attempted armed robbery at a Fountain Gate eatery in the hope of going back to prison, a court has heard. Robert McLeod, of Noble Park, had previously tried to hold up a servo and a bottle shop with a dessert spoon. On this occasion on 25 Februrary, after a breakfast meal, he wielded cutlery and yelled "give me all your money" and "I'm robbing you" at several staff at the front counter of the Pancake Parlour. In front of alarmed diners, he hurled the knife and fork as well as a bowl of lollies at the manager. The utensils struck the manager's stomach, causing no injury. McLeod, who was 47 at the time, was captured by security staff in a centre car park. He
told police that he wanted to go back to Port Phillip Prison. He had previously been jailed and convicted for his dessert spoon hold-ups in Noble Park in September 2017. He was serving a community corrections order with a supervised justice plan at the time of the Pancake Parlour hold-up as a result. In sentencing on 9 August, Judge Gabriele Cannon of the Victorian County Court said McLeod's "rather pathetic" actions would have been "most frightening" to those who witnessed it. "This is no laughing matter and it's time for you to behave yourself once and for all ... "To accept that you can't always get what you want - and you should not frighten other people in trying to do so." Judge Cannon said McLeod may be already institutionalised, enjoying the attention and structure of prison. He'd offended in the past
to go back to jail, she noted. "I'm very worried about your prospects of rehabilitation and the protection of the community." McLeod's mild intellectual disability lowered his moral culpability. It was also perhaps why he showed no remorse or insight into his offending, Judge Cannon said. There seemed to be not enough resources and supports in the community to occupy, supervise and provide good company for the unemployed man. "Your case is a difficult case and a sad one. "I express the hope that your release will be supported in the community in a strong, structured way." McLeod was convicted and jailed for up to two years, with a 12-month minimum non-parole period. It included 165 days spent in presentence remand.
Teenager jailed over ‘horrendous’ act By Brendan Rees A teenager who had never driven a car before and who mowed down a crowd of people while "drunk as f..." resulting in a man's leg having to be amputated has been jailed. Dieu Atem of Cranbourne North pleaded guilty to five charges in the Victorian County Court sitting in Melbourne on 6 August including reckless conduct endangering life and driving without a licence. Atem, 19, had been drinking heavily at his Endeavour Drive home while celebrating his brother's birthday with a friend in September last year. The group then left in a Nissan Pulsar after deciding to go to Collingwood's Gasometer Hotel. Judge Elizabeth Brimer said in sentencing remarks a fight broke out at the hotel about during the early hours of the morning where Atem threw a chair, hitting a patron in the head. Outside the hotel, Atem had been in a fight with a man before being assaulted by a number of others while on the ground, the court heard. He got behind the wheel of the Pulsar and drove on the wrong side of Mater Street, narrowly missing pedestrians before speeding towards a crowd young people. The court heard Atem crashed into a parked car, pushing it into another parked car and pinning an 18-year-old man between the vehicles - instantly "shattering" his right leg which had to be amputated. Judge Brimer said a friend saw "bone poking out" of the man's leg and with the help of police used his belt and shirt to stop the bleeding. Another man waiting for a taxi was knocked to the ground, requiring stitches to his leg. Atem left the scene and caught a taxi where he paid a $126 fare to travel to Cranbourne railway station.
The heat is on Casey Council has installed a replacement hot water unit at the Tooradin Junior Football Club following a theft last month. Council workers also fixed the club's roller door after the thieves attempted to break-in. Casey manager of active communities Callum Pattie said council was sad to hear about the club being hit three times by thieves. "We will also implement additional security measures to try and prevent any future thefts and break in's at the Tooradin Junior Football club," he said.
Two charged over ramraid Two men have been charged over an alleged stealing of a safe during an alleged ramraid burglary in Dandenong. The Narre Warren pair, aged 25 and 47, had used a vehicle to gain access to a Lonsdale Street business about 3.30am on 6 May, police say. They allegedly stole a safe containing cash and fled. On 22 August, police raided an address in Narre Warren, arresting the 47-year-old at the scene. They say they seized weapons and suspected drugs. The 25-year-old came forward to police on 9 August. Both men were charged with burglary, theft, criminal damage, drug, weapon and driving offences. They were remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court next month.
Man stabbed outside shopping centre Police have arrested a woman after a man was located with non-life threatening stab wounds outside Hampton Park Shopping Centre on Thursday 8 August. Emergency services were called to the incident on Hallam Road about 7.20pm. Police said the woman was arrested at the scene and is assisting police with their enquiries. Both parties are known to each other, police say.

In sentencing, Judge Brimer said Atem drove in "a manner such that you could easily have killed a number of people." She described the injuries suffered by the 18-year-old as "horrendous". "While the other injuries suffered by other victims, fortunately, were less serious, nevertheless, they were injuries caused to people

Judge Brimer also said mobile phone footage "shows clearly the fear, panic and distress caused by you to those present." Atem came to Australia as a refugee in 2006 at the age of seven from South Sudan with two siblings. He is a permanent resident and has moved many times between Dandenong, Noble Park and Pakenham with family. After his grandmother died three years ago Atem had a "brief period of homelessness" and began drinking. The court heard Atem had been on a Youth Supervision Order in 2017 following charges of theft of motor vehicle, armed robbery and failure to answer bail. Atem was jailed for five years.
Detectives are looking for witnesses after an 80-year-old woman's handbag were stolen in Hampton Park last month. Police say she left her hand bag at a bus stop outside a Hallam Road shopping centre after boarding a bus about 4pm on 19 July. The bank cards from the purse were used to make several transactions. She is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance, aged in her early 20s, with dark shoulder length hair and a skinny build. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

For decades Cranbourne has been fighting local fires and joining their fellow firefighters in other regions and interstate. The Japanese students aged 14-17 years stayed with host families within the Cranbourne community and buddied up with students of CGS while they attended the school. School run ‘nightmare’ By Brendan Rees
No escape from stench By Brendan Rees Lenti Lenko says he can't hang out washing or go for a walk with his family without the revolting stench of the Hampton Park tip wafting over. "It was so bad one night my wife and I were dry retching in the bathroom," he says. He is one of dozens of angry residents who have complained to the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) about the constant stench. Last week, the EPA issued a works approval for the construction of new storage ponds and a treatment plant to manage the hazardous leachate at the Hallam Road landfill. The EPA's executive director Tim Eaton said the three new leachate ponds proposed by the tip's operator, Suez Recycling and Recovery (Suez), would help reduce the odour. "The Hallam Road Landfill has a history of problems with odour and this is not a complete solution, but adequate leachate management does enable landfill operators to better deal with landfill gas issues," he said. Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon, who says she can smell the odour from her Cranbourne North home, recently council held a meeting between Suez and EPA to "further reiterate the community's and our concerns on this matter and ensure action was being taken to address them." The EPA works approval now requires planning approval from Casey Council. Mr Lenko says he and his wife decided to
move to Narre Warren South after the smell at their original home near the tip became unbearable three years ago. But as of May this year Mr Lenko said he noticed the smell becoming progressively worse despite being more than 5km away. "It makes you dry retch, it gives you a headache, you can't go for a walk ... it pervades your house," he said. "You can't even have people out on the pergola it stinks ... I was lodging complaints every day." Winsome Anderson, whose family run a farm next door, described the odour as "disgusting" which often made her feel lethargic. "I've been up there and I don't know how people live," she said. "This is all a drain on everyone's health." Suez infrastructure manager Andrew Carson said they have been listening to the community's feedback and started a gas well drilling program and the connection of existing gas wells. "These wells form a part of the process to convert landfill gas into electricity to deliver power to the grid," he said. "The gas is extracted under vacuum, minimising escape, therefore these actions will reduce the risk of odour to the community." Mr Carson said timelines for drilling works on the active landfill cell had been brought forward, allowing landfill gas to be extracted and processed in generators, “mitigating immediate odour concerns”.

"In the afternoon you find you have to leave an hour early just to be able to get here and get a car spot," she said. Casey manager city and asset planning Keri New said the site had been blocked off for subdivision by the developer and Brookford Estate, the parcel of land next to the school. Ms New said upgrades planned for nearby roads would improve traffic flow and the parking situation. "We understand the developer plans on starting work on these road updates before the end of this year," she said. "We are unable to influence or speed up the construction timelines as we are not the developer of the site. "We do empathise with families frustrated with the current situation. Parking restrictions are in place to maintain safety around the school," Ms New said.

Fed-up parents of a Clyde North primary school say are allowing more than an hour during pick up and drop off times. Parents say the school run at Wilandra Rise Primary School had become a "nightmare" after nearby roads been blocked off due to a new estate being developed. When Star News visited the site, drivers battled in the traffic-choked gridlock along Haflinger Avenue and Aayana Street - with a supervisor also out directing cars. But Casey Council says it is confident upgrades to connecting roads would start by the end of this year. Parent Belinda said she had to be at the school "super early" to get a park which was still not guaranteed."There's people beeping each other and parking illegally," she said. "It's dangerous ... people have to drop their kids off and they're jumping out of cars," Belinda said, who asked not to reveal her surname. Christy Gonzalez said the biggest problem facing parents was there was no exit with cars doing "U-turns in front of you." "They just line up to collect their kids done the other end in the two minute drop-off," she said. "There's no other way to get out ... you can see the dirt pile where they drive up on the speed hump and are up on the grass," she added. "Council fine them but they don't care ... it's crazy. "I generally come an hour to an hour-andhalf earlier," Ms Gonzalez said. Another parent, Waruna Kariyawasam said he got to the school at 2.30pm to avoid the chaos. When he did find a park, he said he usually worked in his car. "It's very inconvenient. If I miss the 2.30 window I won't get a park," he said.

Weather wreaks havoc By Brendan Rees Narre Warren State Emergency Service has kept busy after wild weather lashed the region on Friday 9 August.Volunteers attended 17 jobs in the Casey area, mostly for fallen trees and damaged roofs, the unit's spokesman Damian Burns said. Winds speeds reached up to 90km/h at 9am, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. Mr Burns said the blizzard like conditions blew a trampoline flew onto a road in the vicinity of Cranbourne -Berwick Road and Linsell Boulevard in Clyde North. No one was injured but Mr Burns said it was disappointing the owner had not secured the trampoline. "They're shaped in such a way to actually take off and then when they land because they're round they roll ... they do quite a bit of damage," he said. A car also veered off Baxter Tooradin Road in Pearcedale into a drain full of water about 2pm. Pearcedale CFA volunteers attended and it's understood no person was trapped in the incident. Mr Burn said widespread heavy rain caused leaks to residential roofs and damage to tiles. "Most of the calls have been down the southern part of City of Casey ... because the strong wind is a strong westerly wind coming off Port Phillip Bay," he said. "Frankston and some of the Mornington areas have been badly affected," he added. Blustery winds caused the Frankston pier to snap off in the waves about 9.30am.Mr Burns said strong winds also brought trees down on Menzies Close, Narre Warren South and Stone Hill Circuit in Cranbourne East. A garage door was also damaged in Cranbourne North, he said. Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster said about 15-20mm of rain fell over the region.

Pounding rain and strong winds played havoc over the weekend in Casey.Mr Burn said they responded to a job whereby a 25 metre fence had blown over at a Cranbourne North property on Sunday 11 August which now needs replacing. Gale-force winds blew a garage roof off in Tooradin which landed about 100 metres away in a neighbouring tree while part of a timber fence in Hampton Park fell onto a footpath in Joshua Drive.

"For public safety and also security we were able to do something with that," Mr Burn said of the fallen fence. Volunteers were called to help a resident in Narre Warren on Friday afternoon on 9 August after part of their ceiling collapsed due to a leak. Mr Burn said the build up of water had caused the ceiling to become "thin bit of paper" allowing water to "just fall in."

Business chick ‘wings it’ By Narelle Coulter To a room full of business women, the most awe-inspiring thing about international business woman Emma Isaacs was undoutedly the fact that she is the mother of five children under 10. “I love that the mention of my five kids gets more reaction than anything,“ Emma said with laugh at the start of her address to the fifth annual Casey Cardinia Women’s Business Lunch on Friday 9 August. “Yes, I have five lovely little humans waiting for me in LA. It’s a completely crazy life. My youngest turns two next week. We are having a party but nothing is organised but I will get onto that as soon as I get home.“ Emma is the founder and Global CEO of Business Chicks, Australia’s largest event and networking community for women. She leads a team of 40 “amazing women“ spread across three continents and four time zones, which she said “makes for not a lot of sleep at times“. Hundreds of women from across Casey and Cardinia attended the lunch keen to hear Emma share her story of success and the lessons she has learned along the way. Emma described herself as “someone who has tried to do things without knowing how they are going to turn out and definitely before I am ready to attempt them“. “I’ve moved countries to start a new business with my family in tow, I signed a book contract and gave myself three months to write it. I really believe in doing what feels right and not always what we think is right. I am passionate about encouraging women to take on that mindset and very much leap before they are ready and give things a go.“ Emma gets asked a lot if entrepreneurs are born or made? “In my instance I came out an entrepre-

She jokes that as a seven year old she founded her first business, a lolly enterprise into which she co-opted the neighbourhood kids. “I’d stand up on a milk crate and say ’go and borrow money from your parents’. All the kids would come back with $2 notes, remember
those? We would go to the milk bar and buy a whole help of chocolates and lollies. We’d divide them into smaller bundles and then sell them back to the parents. “It was actually a brilliant first business and I am very proud of it,“ she said, to laughter from the audience. Emma dropped out of university after six months, a fact which still troubles her mother, and got her first job at a small recruitment

“At the next event the marketing manager got on stage and said “We are going to stop running this networking group we can’t make it work, anyone in room who wants to help come and talk to me at the end. “My general manager at the recruitment business, who is now the CEO of Business Chicks, lent into me and said ’you are going to buy it aren’t you Em?’ I said ’yeah, I am’. “Anyone else sitting next to me that day would have said don’t do this, you have a profitable business with a great culture, a great team which is making money, you don’t need another project on the side. That would have been the sensible option.“ Bored with her work in recuritument and itching to do something different, Emma had found her new passion. “I had no experience running an event, except maybe my sister’s 18th birthday, and no experience running a membership organisation but if you have a dream or a goal it’s about somehow finding the confidence to take that first step.“ Over the past 14 years Emma and her team have grown Business Chicks from 250 members to a network that now reaches half a million women each year. The organisation produces more than 100 events annually and has a 250K social media following. Innovations have included a magazine, an annual conference and an entrepreneurial program. Guest speakers have included Jamie Oliver, Richard Branson and Arianna Huffington. “We have grown the business by listening to our customers and responding to them. It is a very beautiful, special business that we are very very proud of.“ In 2016 Emma and her husband moved their family to Los Angeles so Emma could expand Business Chicks into the US.

Jamie Oliver was never going to write to us and say ’hey, can I speak at Business Chicks?’, Richard Branson was never going to say come to Necker Island and bring 30 members.“ She urged women to surround themselves with the right people and write their own rules for their life and career. “We are so busy comparing ourselves to others we lose sight of what we really truly want. Sit back and think ’Am I on the right path? What more is out there for me? Each and every one of us gets to write the rules.“ She urged women to never, ever give up and to step up and show leadership. “Leadership lives and breathes in every single one of us. You might not be the most senior person in your organisation or think you have enough experience but you can be a leader. “We need to see strong female leaders out there mentoring others, coaching others and supporting each other. What the world needs now is people to come forward and lead.“

What's the best thing about the Cranbourne CFA? You are able to help the Community in times of need. Also you have another family here: a wonderful team of volunteers and staff members who work great together and look out for each other. About how many call outs would the brigade attend each year? The number of calls the brigade attends every year is increasing. For the 2018 -2019 financial year the brigade attended over 1000 calls for help. Was celebrating the brigade's 75th anniversary last weekend a proud moment for all? The 75th Anniversary was a proud moment for our members. It was great to catch up with many former brigade members who have moved onto different brigades or moved away. But it was a great opportunity for the senior members to share old war stories and reflect on memories. What's your favourite holiday spot in Australia? Up at my friends bush block in a place called Emu (near St. Arnaud) where we can camp, play bush golf and ride the motorbikes. What is your favourite book? Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy. At school I.. ....was very quiet and shy and wanted to be a school teacher like my mum. What's your favourite movie? Super Troopers. What's something people don't know about you? I'm half Filipino and half Irish. If you were PM for a day, what would you do? Improve health care, mental health and disability services. Best concert or live show you have been to? Sound Relief Concert at the MCG in 2009.

Businesses vie for awards Twenty-four local businesses are in the running to take out a 2019 Casey Cardinia Business Award (CCBA), with the finalists announced for the region’s flagship awards program. The CCBA are a partnership between the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire, held each year to recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements and contribution of businesses and organisations across the region. A special function was held on Wednesday 14 August at Bunjil Place to announce the finalists across the 10 award categories, with all finalists also now in the running for the coveted Casey Cardinia Business of the Year award. City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon congratulated all businesses that were announced as finalists and wished them luck for the awards, with the winners to be revealed at a Gala Dinner on Friday 18 October at the Cranbourne Racing Centre. “The Casey Cardinia Business Awards are one of the great examples of how we’re supporting our business community through our regional partnership with Cardinia,” Cr Stapledon said. “They are a wonderful way to acknowledge the many exceptional businesses operating across the region and are a celebration of the success and innovation of our local businesses.” Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Graeme Moore said as always, the judges had a tough task in selecting the finalists. “This year a total of 91 applications were received from across the region, including many businesses connecting with the program for the

Studies suggest that 8.4 – 50% of those individuals who present at a hospital’s emergency department could’ve been seen and treated by a GP. On the flipside, an Australian study found 3% of patients that walk into a
medical centre to see a GP have a potentially life-threatening emergency. “It’s fantastic to be able to offer more options of care to patients who walk into our medical centres. This in turn helps reduce the burden on the Australian health care system with the high costs associated with hospital treatment." Since launching, the team has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from patients and practitioners. The benefits of SwiftQ Immediate Care are multifaceted. Patients receive a wider range of
treatment options for minor accidents and illnesses at their medical center if required, potentially saving a trip to the hospital. There is also more opportunity for continuity of care with their regular GP and medical centre following treatment and the options to be referred onto onsite Allied Health Providers like dental, pharmacy, physiotherapy and psychology. SwiftQ Immediate care supports GPs by providing their patients with a walk-in service. SwiftQ Immediate Care is open every day from 8am to 8pm.

For kids in crisis, time is of the essence - and a new innovation by Backpacks 4 VIC Kids could see those children receive the essentials they need sooner through its new Tiny Sites. The Cranbourne-based not for profit has been providing ‘ME Packs’, backpacks filled with essentials like clothes, stationery and toiletries, to kids since April 2015. The packs are usually distributed on request to police, child protection workers and others who come into contact with kids in crisis. However, Tiny Sites are set to change this by making the packs easier for workers to access when they need them. Shipping containers stocked with the packs and other essentials like cots and strollers will be placed at strategic locations, and relevant agencies will be provided with a code to access the container at any time of the day or night, so that the children in their care can be presented with the resources they need in a timelier manner. The idea came about after Backpacks 4 VIC Kids founder, Sally Beard, received feedback from workers at agencies that some kids were missing out on the vital items. “Children, especially sibling groups, were often spending days or weeks at a motel with one or two child protection workers because it would take that much time for them to find a carer who either had the nursery items or had the resources to go and buy the items. That led to a lot of sibling groups being split up, so after they’d just been torn away and lost everything they know, they lost each other, which breaks my heart,” Ms Beard says. She believes the Tiny Sites are the first of their kind in Australia. The first container is currently in Dandenong South, and Ms Beard says she is applying for a permit so it becomes active. She hopes to place it somewhere in Dandenong close to the family violence and child protection authorities, and close enough to Backpacks for Vic Kids’ headquarters to easily restock the container. In conjunction with the Tiny Sites project, the charity has reopened its op shop on Camms Road to raise funds to enable it to create more Tiny Sites and even commence new programs, like providing beds and furniture to carers. Meanwhile, other sources of support are coming on board too. Clothing recycler SCRgroup recently held a fundraiser for the charity, supported by Pakenham Central Marketplace. Pakenham Central Marketplace purchased a number of copies of picture storybook,

In total, $1,057.05 was donated to the charity. Ms Beard said the partnership vital to enable her not-for-profit’s work to continue. “Around 4,000 children enter out-of-home care placements in Victoria each year. Without wonderful partnerships like this one with SCRgroup and Pakenham Central Marketplace, Backpacks 4 VIC Kids would struggle to give urgently needed resources to these local children,” she says.

Meanwhile, a 28-year-old New Lambton woman was sentenced in July at the Maitland Local Court after being convicted of fraudulently obtaining, and attempting to obtain, more than $63,000 in Pay As You Go Withholding (PAYGW) tax credits in her income tax returns. A reparation order was also made for the full amount of the fraud, meaning the money fraudulently claimed will now be available again for the community. This sentence means that Sarah Trow will be confined to her residence for 15 months under strict supervision and will be subject to electronic monitoring. “If you’re caught breaking the law we will hold you accountable, even if it means pursuing you in the courts,” said ATO Acting Assistant Commissioner David Mendoza. Between 2013 and 2016, whilst receiving Centrelink benefits, Mrs Trow claimed she worked at one time or another for MEGT (Australia) Ltd, Queens Wharf Brewery Pty Ltd, G.J Rollings & W.J Rollings, Ltd and Woolworths and earned a total income of more than $95,000. Mrs Trow was found to not have been employed by any of these companies for the financial years lodged and therefore not entitled to the refunds claimed. A South Australian man has been sentenced to 2 years and 4 months jail for attempting to obtain nearly $1.5 million in refunds he wasn’t entitled to. Adam Hamshere, 39, used his accounting knowledge to set up a fake business. He obtained an ABN, and later registered for GST and Wine Equalisation Tax (WET), claiming he sold cigars. On 31 March 2016 Mr Hamshere lodged five business activity statements (BAS), claiming he was entitled to GST and WET refunds of $1,444,069. Unsurprisingly, this attracted the attention of the ATO. ATO systems flagged this claim initiating an audit almost immediately. Mr Hamshere’s brazen behaviour didn’t stop there, he subsequently rang the ATO almost a dozen times asking for his refund, and during the audit claimed his paper and electronic records had been stolen. Detailed investigations could find no evidence of business activity, nor evidence of Mr Hamshere’s claims that all of his paper and electronic records had been stolen. Mr Hamshere was charged in Adelaide District Court with six counts of section s11.1 & s134.2(1) of the Criminal Code 1995 as he attempted, by deception, to dishonestly obtain a financial advantage from the Commonwealth. Acting ATO Assistant Commissioner David Mendoza said the strong sentence was a fitting result for such an audacious attempt to cheat the tax system. “Those people who try to evade or cheat the tax and super system will get caught and we will take firm action. We will not tolerate this type of behaviour. “The tax and superannuation systems are valuable community assets owned by all Australians and we all have a role in protecting them.” Mr Mendoza said.

Cards for cause By Jessica Anstice A Pakenham woman with special needs has hit on a new idea to raise money for charity. Michelle Cleland put her plans to action a few weeks ago by creating homemade cards and donating them to the Berwick Opportunity Shop. The very special 36-year-old spends her own money to make the cards with all the proceeds from sales going to the op shop. "She has the most beautiful smile and infectious personality and laugh," Berwick Opportunity Shop president Margaret Ruse said. "She is a wonderful supporter of the Berwick Opportunity Shop and we love her." Michelle makes the cards with the help of her carer Sue and supportive mother Marie. "Sue brings Michelle into our shop for a regular weekly visit, at which time Michelle replenishes her supply of beautiful cards," Ms Ruse added. "Michelle radiates warmth and affection that our customers and volunteers can't resist, Michelle brightens everyone's day. "We value her contribution and the time and effort she puts into making the cards is truly appreciated." Since June 25, Michelle has sold enough cards to total $196 with each card selling for just $2. "It's good that they're going, it gives her something to do and she's really proud of herself," Michelle's mother Marie Cleland said. "I just love the fact that she loves to help people. She's been through hell and back. She's so brave and just happy all the time. "The ladies at the op shop love her to death, they're so nice to her and she comes home with a bag of stuff every week." Michelle's unique handmade cards cater for all occasions, including birthday, thank you, baby shower and friendship cards.

Krispy Kreme have been doubling all online donations up to $50,000 that have been made to Cupcake Day events since August. The funds have seen the equivalent of over 3,000 homeless dogs receive a week's worth of antibiotics, as well as over 2,000 animals transported to receive RSPCA care. "Each year, RSPCA Cupcake Day is a chance for people to connect with their friends and family, enjoy a social gathering, and show their support for the RSPCA. The funds raised are crucial to our work in preventing cruelty to animals," said Acting CEO of RSPCA Australia Dr Bidda Jones. Scouts celebrate By Brendan Rees Narre Warren South Scout Group held its annual presentation evening on Friday 9 August. Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas accompanied proud scout leaders, committee members, families and friends in Hallam to celebrate the achievements of the scouts over the last twelve months. "The Narre Warren South Scouts are a formidable force in our local community, providing many young people with the opportu-
nity to have fun, develop friendships and learn teamwork skills," he said. There was also excitement as the architectural plans for the new scout hall in Narre Warren South were unveiled. A recent funding announcement of $650,000 from the State Government and further Local Government support will mean that the Scout Group will have a permanent building to operate from for the first time in its history. "I'm proud that the Narre Warren South Scouts will shortly have their own new build-
ing to operate from, allowing their fine work to continue," Mr Maas said. All members of this fantastic organisation take part in a diverse range of activities that help develop resilience and leadership skills while also contributing to the local community. In the last 12 months alone, the Narre Warren South Scouts have participated in numerous camping trips, night hikes, Anzac Day dawn services and fundraising events. Some local scouts travelled to South Australia for the Australian Jamboree and America
for the World Jamboree, where they gathered with national and international scout groups to engage in a mixture of activities. Mr Maas also thanked Group Leader Stacey Herring and Bob Taylor - immediate past chief commissioner of Scouts Victoria for their contributions to this wonderful event. Narre Warren South Scouts is made up of more than 100 members. The group is comprised of the Joeys, Cubs, Scouts, Rovers and Venturers.

When the Seagulls soared By Russell Bennett To solidify their rebirth in a new era of West Gippsland footy, the Seagulls revisited the glory years of their past on Saturday night at their Tooradin nest. At a packed function at the Tooradin and District Sports Club, they celebrated ‘The Ultimate Team’ - the top 25 players from their golden era of 1970 to 1994. During that period they claimed four premierships in the former South West Gippsland Football League - including three straight from 1970 to 1972, and another in 1975 - and another three in the West Gippsland Football League (1977, 1984, and 1985). After a lean period in the former Casey Cardinia league and South East Football Netball League, the Gulls are once again in a competition in which they can compete with the best. Their hopes of senior premiership glory are alive and well, which is in stark contrast to their years of playing a kind of damage-limitation football against the likes of powerhouse Berwick, Narre Warren, and Beaconsfield sides. Saturday night - just days before a debut senior finals campaign in the WGFNC would get underway - was a reminder that, within the very fabric of their club, there’s the beating heartbeat of a champion. That champion is William ‘Billy’ Morrison. Bill was clearly taken aback by being named number 1 in the list of all-time great Seagulls from 1970 to 1994. But his record is simply astonishing. After being sensationally given his marching orders as Bunyip coach some 50 years ago, he crossed to the Seagulls and became their all-time greatest player. He won senior best and fairest awards at the club in 1970, ’71, ’73, and ’74 and was a five-time premiership player (four of them as player-coach). He was a three-time league best and fairest winner in the SWGFL, and in 1977 - his only premiership-winning season at Tooradin in which he didn’t coach - he was the club’s president. Bill was a brilliant, hard-nosed rover who consistently racked up huge numbers of possessions and was never beaten in one-onone battles. Already an inducted legend of Tooradin-Dalmore, his status within the club only grew to new heights on Saturday night. Current Tooradin-Dalmore vice president and past president Derek Genoni became quite emotional when talking about Bill’s impact on the club, and what the night meant to both men was obvious. “I’d like to congratulate the club on giving us the chance to indulge,” Bill said, after accepting his award in front of a standing ovation from the Seagull faithful. “I was recruited as a failed coach from Bunyip, and I’d been playing football around Victoria for a while before I came here, but this wonderful club gave me the opportunity to coach again and the football gods shone on

It was a marvellous time. “Good luck to all the current players - if the football gods smile on you, it (premiership success) will happen, and if you put in it’ll make those gods happy.” Allan Patterson was the first to be named in the prestigious list, at #25, on Saturday night. He joined the Seagulls in 1974 and won premierships in 1975 and 1977. He was a brilliant utility player - used as a key forward, on-baller, or even backman at various stages. Others to be named in the list included: At number 17, Gulls life member, multiple premiership player, and the former league best and fairest-winning dominant ruckman of West Gippsland Chris Denereaz; and former athletic key forward Barry Eaton, who was
named at number 15 after winning a record six senior premierships with the Seagulls. Many of those named in the top 25 spoke on the night, including former North Melbourne player and strongly-built centreman Geoff Burke, who after being named at number 14, gave one of the function’s most memorable speeches. Ex-Dandenong VFA champion Pat Flaherty, who led West Gippsland’s goal-kicking in 1983, was a three-time leading goal-kicker at Tooradin, and kicked five goals in both their 1984 and 1985 premiership sides - which he also coached - was named at number 11, in a sign of just how rich the Gulls’ history of onfield brilliance is. A video interview with him, conducted by fellow Tooradin-Dalmore icon Greg ‘Big Boy’ Bethune, was another of the night’s highlights.
To even be eligible to be named among the top 25 from 1970 to 1994 players had to have played at least two seasons for the club in that period, and their selection was based on performances for Tooradin-Dalmore - not their achievements at other clubs. Each player who was named to the side on Saturday night was presented by a current member of the Gulls group, in a fantastic touch to bridge the eras. Stifling Demons stay in touch in a defensive display By Tyler Lewis Casey got back to its best defensively on the weekend in a brutal win over old nemesis, Collingwood - 8.9 (57) to 5.12 (42) at the Pies' spiritual home, Victoria Park. With an intensifying wind going towards one end, Magpies skipper Alex Woodward won the toss and strangely went against the breeze. And it seemed to be a masterstroke nine minutes in when the Pies were leading two goals to one. But the Demons clicked into gear and halted the Pies, keeping them goalless from the nine minute mark of the opening term to the early stages of the last. Kyle Chandler got the Dees on the board inside a minute of the match before the Pies put them on the ropes with the wind at the first huddle. Coming into the match, Casey coach Sam Radford wasn’t focusing on the opportunity of finals - believing the ladder would take care of itself, but wanted to see his side play the four quarters. “We certainly defended really well for four quarters that’s for sure,” he said. “It was probably our best defensive game for a long time, Collingwood are a really good ball movement team and we were able to restrict the number of marks and handballs. “We stopped the way they wanted to play which was really positive - the rest of the game was pretty solid and (there’s) still some room for improvement but (I’m) really rapt with how the boys went about it.” Brayden Preuss had another sensational game in the ruck, compiling 75 hit-outs, which was double the Collingwood side as a collective. Radford speaks highly of the Melbourne
big man and enjoys when he is in his side. “He gave us first use - Collingwood are a really good team so any advantage in that area was really important,” he said. “Brayden certainly gives us first use and impacts around the ground as well as getting his hand on it. “Every game Brayden has played at VFL level this year he has been outstanding for us.” The Casey Fields oval has come under some scrutiny as of late when the last game resulted in two injuries to Geelong players. The match this week against Frankston is a floating fixture with the ground being assessed on Wednesday. The sides shared the points but, with Crib Point upsetting Tyabb, the Dales will finish the year on the bottom of the ladder. Devon Meadows finished its season in style, beating the finals-bound Chelsea 10.13 (74) to 8.17 (65). The Gulls got off to a flyer with a handy three-goal buffer at the first break, but the Panthers clawed back into the contest and ran away courtesy of a five-goal to two third term. Stuart Cunningham was the best for the Panthers while Shaun Foster stood strong for the Gulls. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 17 Keysborough shook off a wasteful start against Caulfield to run away with a 10.11 (71) to 5.13 (43) victory. Chris Bryan brought up his season halfcentury with his two majors on the weekend, while Anthony Brannan was named best afield. Stuart Paterson was a standout for Caulfield. The finals begin a week early for the Gulls this week when they take on Springvale Districts, which sits on top of the ladder. The Doveton Eagles cruised to victory after a blistering opening half against Heatherton, winning 10.13 (73) to 2.5 (17). Nick Battle was the best for the Eagles with four majors while Adam Read also added three. Chris Tosin stood strong for Heatherton, which now faces relegation at season's end if it can't beat East Brighton in the final round. The Eagles are expected to make the finals after they take on Skye in Round 18.
DIVISION 3 ROUND 17 The ladder-leading Hampton Park continued its winning ways against Endeavour Hills on the weekend in its 9.9 (63) to 5.3 (33) triumph. The Redbacks did as they have all year when they jumped the Hills early and coasted home from then. Shaun Walsh was the best for Hampton Park while Nathan Reid was among the standouts for Endeavour Hills. Endeavour Hills has the opportunity to move into second position when it takes on Clayton this weekend in the final round. The Hills have a mammoth percentage and if they win they will equal Clayton on wins and surpass them on percentage to steal second place. The Redbacks will play Black Rock, who they are expected to beat comfortably. Hampton Park forward Peter Dye (62 season goals) practically has his name etched on the league's goal kicking award already, leading the next best Jarrod Marolla (50) by 12 majors. DIVISION 4 ROUND 17 Hallam relished in the opportunity to gain a percentage boost against Dandenong, winning 15.16 (106) to 2.3 (15). The Hawks went goalless in the opening term but flicked the switch in the second and the last to run away big winners. A brilliant 7.5 to nil final term boosted the victory for the Hawks. Rory McIvor was best afield with his three majors. Hallam now holds a two-point ladder advantage over Moorabbin, due to the Kangaroos' draw against the Dolphins. A seven-goal to one premiership term set up the win for the Hawks, who had nine individual goal scorers. Ziggie Alwan was the best for the Hawks with his three majors. Rowville will take on Noble Park in the next round of the season. Noble Park suffered its 10th loss of the season when it went down to an inaccurate Blackburn, 9.17 (71) to 6.6 (42). Nathan Oakes was best afield for the Bulls again while Jake Hammond booted five for the Panthers. VFLW Casey fell short of another victory when it lost to Hawthorn, 2.7 (25) to 3.4 (22). Sarah Lampard brought her own Sherrin for the Demons, collecting 28 disposals while Amana McDonnough was instrumental with 13 tackles for the day. Casey will face the Northern Territory Thunder next week in its final match of the year.

SOUTH EASTERN WOMEN’S REVIEW - ROUND 13 DIVISION 2 Cranbourne owned its clash against Pearcedale, running away with a convincing win at home on Saturday, 4.7 (31) to 1.1 (7). The Eagles trailed by three points at quarter time, but held the Dales to just one point in the remaining three terms, kicking four goal themselves. Lana Fullwood was a handful up forward for the Eagles, kicking two goals, while Nicole Knudsen, Meg Graham and Tameka Youn were in the best and showed some terrific signs. Beaconsfield, meanwhile, went down to a powerful Tyabb side away from home, 5.9 (39) to 0.2 (2). The top-of-the-table Yabbies were a class above the Eagles, powering away to the strong win after controlling all four quarters. DIVISION 3 Pakenham continues to show signs of improvement with the Lions celebrating the 50-game milestones of Rosalie Davis and Kerrie-Anne Micallef with a 24-point victory over Warragul in SEWF Division Three on Saturday night. The Lions were greeted by freezing cold conditions and a muddy and wet Western Park with torrential rain making an appearance at regular intervals. Pakenham dominated the first term with skipper Rachel Betteridge leading from the front with some great tackling, setting the example for the hard grind ahead. Steph Scott, Mimi Henderson and Zoe Loudon let nothing through in the backline, while Lauren Hojnacki, Chloe Nagel and Bel McGee linked up well with some great handball through the midfield. Coach Tom Bluhm has been working hard on improving the giving and receiving of handballs - and the practice paid off with the
Lions sharing the ball better than they have all season. The Lions led by nine points at quarter time with Sage Hahn kicking the only goal, while Davis, Micallef, Melina Eppel and Renee Carter did some good things in the forward line. The ladder-leading Lions then had some real struggles through the middle stages of the match with the Gulls kicking 1.1 to 0.4 during the second and third quarters. Players like Mel Stocker, Bec Domotor, Tash Wakenshaw, Beth Studd and Nat Staunton stood tall under pressure, while Ros Cook and Rosie Bureta were warming up for very influential last quarters. The Lions led by six points at the final break and were set the challenge of kicking two goals in the final term to throw coach Bluhm in the mud. The Lions exceeded those expectations, booting three goals in the final quarter with Micallef, Eppel and Hahn all kicking major scores. The Lions have been consistent across the board with Chloe Bluhm, Courtney Dodson, Danielle Case and Hayley Denboer all having an impact in the second half. Hahn finished the night with two goals for the Lions while Betteridge played a great captain’s game over four quarters. Henderson and Loudon were dominant in the backline for the Lions while Nagel played her best game for the season on a wing. The girls thoroughly enjoyed giving their coach a nice slide through the mud at the conclusion of the match. The Lions play their last home-and-away fixture at 10am this Saturday, against Mornington at Alexandra Park, before beginning what’s sure to be a tough and exciting finals campaign. Upsets to shake up finals OUTER EAST FOOTBALL PREMIER AND DIVISION 1 REVIEW "There was a lot to play for, and we have to keep winning to play finals, so to get over the top of the reigning premiers who are incredibly hard to beat on their home deck, it was a great result." Cranbourne coach Steve O'Brien knows just how vital Saturday's win against Berwick was in horrendous conditions, but understands it's only half a job done as finals creep closer and closer by the day. The Eagles moved six points clear of Wandin in sixth as the final spot in the Premier Division top five moves one step closer to being finalised, with upsets galore truly shaking things up. In arguably the biggest upset of the season, the Eagles defied the conditions at Edwin Flack Reserve to stun the champion Berwick side, 7.4 (46) to 6.6 (42). Settling the quicker of the two sides on a ground synonymous with dominant Wickers performances, the Eagles held true defensively to set the game up in the first term, and with the return of some of their biggest stars, booted three unanswered goals to set up a 25-point half time lead, holding Rhys Nisbet's champion side goalless as a result. Jed Smith and Jordan Andrews provided a spark up forward for the Wickers in the third term, and with the likes of Madi Andrews and the in-form Lucas Jellyman-Turner finding his run, it seemed the home side would run over the top after slashing the margin to just four points with a quarter to play. But the Eagles showed heart, and ferociousness at the footy to hold on despite the lead changing hands frequently in a riveting final term, with O'Brien's side capturing its most precious four points of the season, and at exactly the right time. O'Brien told the News that it was near on impossible to prepare for the on-field conditions, which made for a classic wet-weather game, but said his side had to alter the way it mentally prepared, and it came to fruition in the first half. "You can't prepare for that, it was a hard slog, and it was more of a mental battle, and that was something we touched on before the game," he said. "It was probably more mental than technical. "Berwick had the wind in the first quarter, so we held really strongly, and denied them being able to impact the scoreboard, and it was crucial. "And we were able to kick one against the wind in the first quarter which gave us some momentum and belief, and in the second quarter we were able to put space on the game. "But we knew they'd come back, they're a great footy side, so we knew they were never out of it, but our first half was outstanding." Jake Stephens, important defender Jordan Bertrand and gun utility Shaun Marusic was instrumental all day, while Archie LawlerLobato showed plenty on his way to a haul of three goals. Helping Cranbourne's cause was the second major boilover of the round, with Upwey Tecoma stunning Wandin at home to put a dent in the Dogs' finals hopes, 11.6 (72) to 8.15 (63). The Dogs settled quicker than the home side to take in a seemingly match-winning lead of 27 points at the major break, but the Tigers fought back to slash the margin to 14 with a quarter to play. The challenge for the Eagles - similar to Cranbourne - was one of a mental battle, with the Bloods proving to be one of the difficult obstacles to overcome, particularly on their home deck. And at half-time, with the Bloods holding on to a six-point advantage, Leigh McQuillen's side needed to respond and bank a win to keep in touch with third spot.

With the class of the likes of Matthew Johnson (four goals), and industrious performances from Riley Verbi and Jack Griffiths through the middle, the Eagles took the game away with a brilliant, and unanswered six-goal third term, showcasing the type of football that makes them such a threat for any side. In the remaining match of Premier, Woori Yallock did what it needed to against Healesville, 11.19 (85) to 1.4 (10) to consolidate third position on the table. In Division 1, it took the energy and talent of some of Doveton's younger brigade to take down Monbulk on Saturday in AFL Outer East Division 1. The Doves moved a game clear in third in what was their most impressive performance of the season, controlling proceedings on their home deck to knock the Hawks off the top of the ladder, 15.7 (97) to 7.5 (47). In complete control from the outset, the Doves found a spark early to jump the premiership fancies with a four-goal to two opening term, before flexing their muscles with some electric ball movement to take in a 38-point lead at half time. With the regulars in Matthew Boyd (three goals), Daniel Zajac and Matt Stapleton providing ample experience once again, two of the Doves' brightest young stars lit it up in a game played in freezing cold conditions as the home side ran away with a massive confidence-boosting win. Youngster Connor Macdonald - a name that will feature plenty in the coming years as an AFL draft prospect - was best afield in his senior debut as a teenager, taking out the David George Medal in the Indigenous Round as the Doves donned a special Indigenous jumper. The Vic Country teenager, who will likely feature for the Dandenong Stingrays in the coming years, is a star on the rise, with director of football Martin Stillman full of praise for the highly talented youngster. "His family's got a long association with the club - he's 16-years-old, was the Vic Country under 16 vice-captain this year, and is Dandenong Stingrays listed, he's a very talented young player," he said. "We probably don't expect him to feature too much at Doveton, he's got a lot of commitments, with Vic Country and has played a lot of school footy this year. "He had a run in the 18s against Emerald, and this week was outstanding, which is so pleasing for us especially with his family's history." Another youngster to shine on the big stage was former Narre Warren forward Max Sheppard, who snagged four majors - including three in a dynamic second-term which helped turn the game for the Doves. Sheppard crossed over to the club mid-season after being starved of opportunities for senior football at the Magpies. "He's a quality person on and off the field - everyone in the AFL Outer East knows he's quality, but wasn't able to break in for senior footy at Narre, and he was looking for opportunities," Stillman said. "He's great friends with Mitch Cotter who's returned to the Doves - and he's been terrific, and at 19-years-old, is only going to get better. "He kicked four, and is starting to blossom as a key forward for Doveton. We look forward to hopefully watching him playing senior footy for the next decade at our club."
