MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk According to the 2016 Census there were less than 1000 children aged from 0-19 years living in Cooroy, making the $5 million hinterland playground an investment of about $5000 per child. Whether residents want it or not the grant has been obtained, the concept plans done and we're being told it's something we'll be proud of, just like the Park Road boardwalk at Noosa Heads. And who can argue with that especially after the popular boardwalk just picked up two Sunshine Coast Master Builders Housing and Construction Awards. Residents will soon be able to have a say but what input the community has in this project is still to be determined. Our poll this week is: Does Cooroy need a $5 million playground? THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…
JIMMY IN HIS RETURN TO THE SEA BY MARGARET MACCOLL It was a very emotional Errol "Jimmy" Lindsay who last Sunday morning launched a replacement fishing boat seven weeks after his was burnt to the water line alongside that of the only other Boreen Point commercial fisherman John Clarke. "It's a proud moment. I didn't think I'd do it. I needed for myself to get something done," Jimmy said as his son Lawrence took the 7m trawler for its first run while friends and family gathered to watch. It's been a horrendous time for Jimmy who over the past four weeks has built his new boat, struggled with serious illness and been devastated by the death of his daughter-in-law, 47, who passed away after contracting an infection in her arm. And replacing the boat at a cost of about $25,000 plus a second hand
Boreen Point fishermen John Clarke and Jimmy Lindsay. motor just about cleaned out his savings. With the cost of insuring a commercial fishing boat about $6000 a year both Jimmy and John considered the expense too much and never expected they'd be the target of arson. Jimmy thanked those who had helped him including two fibreglass companies who provided free service and those who had contributed to a gofundme page.
"It's a lot more boat than you think. It's salted inside. It has a selfdraining back. It's not pretty, it's a fishing boat." Jimmy has been a commercial fisherman in the Noosa lakes for the past 50 years. Now to make a living he works two to three nights a week and takes a discerning catch using a 4" net of bream, flathead and pony fish. John Clarke has fished the lakes for more than 50 years and now works one night a week to catch mullet which he sells to the local community. John used to use two boats to fish but since the fire, only uses one and will not replace the one lost. Both fishermen fear they may be targeted again. John said when the police knocked on his door at 2 in the morning the night of the fire on 22
June he "couldn't believe" what had happened. "It was a horrible sight," he said. Both men had previously had minor damage done to their boats and motors, nets stolen and fuel lines cut. John said a week before the fire someone had removed the bung to sink his boat but luckily it was in shallow water. "To have a total wipe out is a different story," John said. When the fire was set other boats which had been tied up alongside the fishing boats had been moved clear and were undamaged. "I think it's someone who hates fishermen," John said. Police are continuing investigations into the arson. Anyone with information should contact Noosa Police on 5440 8111 or Policelink on 131 444. ●
COUNCIL SAYS THE SEA IS COMING, READY OR NOT BY MARGARET MACCOLL The possible local appearance of tropical species such as box jellyfish, saltwater inundation of David Low Way, low lying areas beside the Noosa River and stormwater drains are among the reasons Noosa Council wants to know the emergent risks posed by climate change and how to deal with it. While it waits for a State
Government review Noosa's Climate Change Adaptation Plan (CCAP) has been delayed 6-7 months, CCAP program coordinator Grant Hinner told Noosa Parks Association Friday's forum as he provided an update on the plan's progress and findings. Grant said the climate risks could be divided into direct risks of heat, flood and coastal hazards and indirect risks such as the effects on
services including energy and water. The number one killer is heat to both humans and wildlife, he said. It is greater than cyclones, floods or bushfires. According to a recently released State Government heatwave duration report our current longest heatwave duration of four days will increase by 2090 to two months increasing risks to health, structures and even violent assaults. Our
rainfall is expected to remain the same but will occur as more intense events in summer and less in winters resulting in changes in vegetation and farming. Grant said modelling showed stormwater drains alongside the Noosa River was very vulnerable. A draft coastal hazards adaptation plan is scheduled for release on 9 October for public consultation. ●

uilding a stronger voice for business by bringing together Noosa's many business groups makes perfect sense to sixth generation local Janet Kake who views the ups and downs life has thrown her as the next step forward in her life journey. "Everything we do gets us to the next stage," she said. "A lot of people live with fear. I practice living with no fear." In typical fashion Noosa's newest Chamber of Commerce president had no desire to be president on joining the group but when asked to stand for the role only two months into her membership last October, has thrown herself into the task with a team approach that has seen membership quadruple over that time. "I knew I needed strong people around me and we now have a strong Committee to grow our membership which has grown to over 180 members and become one voice for business," she said. "We are the conduit between businesses and the Noosa Council and other government bodies." With her own individual approach Janet can see the benefits of Noosa's many fractional business groups but also of uniting to support each other. "Business Groups are like people, with a variety of many

personalities, so it is important for the business to find the right fit for their business personality," she said. "For instance, tourism businesses join Tourism Noosa, Noosaville business owners join Noosaville Business Association but to reach out further to a larger range and variety of business people, Noosa Chamber represents all areas of business." Recently the Chamber began meeting monthly with Council on issues affecting all local business, a relationship she sees as a way of having a wider input in decision making. "We don't always agree on things," she said. "They want to have input otherwise it's just people who complain who have their say but the majority may not agree. "We need (the majority) to be a loud voice." Recent discussions have focussed on Council's proposed changes to advertising signage. "Council's proposed changes to advertising signage is a current issue that will have a marked effect on businesses," Janet said. "We want a common sense solution. "The Noosa Chamber is committed to helping businesses ride the wave to success in Noosa." As well as growing the chamber with its monthly sunset meetings proving particularly popular, introducing students to the chamber

is a project close to her heart."Local 19-year-old Emma Tomlinson has achieved amazing success as an opera singer and has been inducted into the Noosa Chamber as the first

Janet Kake. Janet may be sixth generation in Pomona and fifth generation in Kin Kin with a large extended family that provides its own network across the region, but it was in Brisbane where she first gained success before illness brought her back to Noosa. "When I was born I lived in the main street of Eumundi for six years and went to Eumundi State School. After five primary schools we settled in Brisbane. "All my holidays as a child were in Noosa where I worked in my uncle's Tourist Information Centre on Weyba Road. "At 18 years old and very shy I fell into modelling which showed me how to present myself using body and energy language. "In my early 20s I ventured into insurance for AMP and became number one salesperson in Australia. My success came from target marketing sponsoring the Army, Airforce and Police sporting teams with my name and phone number on the back of their shirts. "From there I fell into Project Marketing starting my own company in 1995 in Toowong. My role was recruiting, writing systems noosatoday.com.au
Picture: DAVE GLEESON, SURFSHOTS and training salespeople. I bought a building, put on 40 salespeople and staff and took over Brisbane. "We have to 'climb the mountain to enjoy the view' which means working smart and hard to eventually delegate and become an owner instead of an employee." Janet has three children, aged 33, 31 and 18, three grandchildren and three horses. After the birth of her third child, daughter Lili Rose and a second diagnosis of breast cancer she felt a strong calling for nature and spiritual growth. "I bought my gorgeous property on Cooroy Mountain in less than 10 minutes at auction and 16 years later it is still my soul place," she said. "I have had breast cancer three times with a double mastectomy five years ago, having five operations that year. "My nipples are made out of my crotch which sounds awkward but is actually really cool. "Breast cancer has been a gift that showed me how much love is around, and taught me to have more patience for people as we never know what is going on in their lives, but mostly, don't sweat the small
stuff as we are all going to die." When Janet moved to Cooroy she also discovered the magic of horses and their teaching ability which she now uses in training others. "At age 40, people kept giving me horses and I ended up with 12," she said. "My first horse of 16 years Arnie is my best teacher and was dangerous and wild when I was still in the fast lane. We are both much slower now. "Horses have taught me to get into the other being's reality, to become one out of two, to be connected, be strong enough but not controlling, leadership and most of all teamwork - give and take. "As my working life has been all about systems, my mind immediately downloaded a system for business people to improve their sales presentation through talk, body and energy language. The horses help people to reveal leadership qualities required to success in business. They help to expose real fears and anxieties people have in life, not just in the round yard, but also revealing the leadership ability of each individual.
There is no horse riding in her training. "The student learns the art of the presentation from the meet and greet, objections, features and benefits, storytelling and much more to the closing of the sale, but most of all how to become one energy from two," she said. "There's no pretending with horses." Horse have also transported Janet along Noosa's Heritage Trails where she discovered many Heritage signs around Kin Kin and Pomona referred to her ancestors. And for the last five years she and Arnie have represented the Light Horse in the Eumundi, Tewantin and Cooroy Anzac and Remembrance Day parades. For her next challenge Janet will be working with a 25-yearold Sunshine Coast company that houses 140 financial advisors in Brisbane and Sydney. Her role is to support them grow to 250 financial advisors within the next year. "This is exciting," she said. â—?

CALL OUT FOR PETITION Residents who support voluntary assisted dying (VAD) are being urged to add their names to a new petition calling on the State Government to move swiftly to enact VAD legislation. Concerned that the Premier is showing little urgency on the issue, the Nurses Supporting Voluntary Assisted Dying and Voluntary Assisted Life Ending (VALE) groups have taken action to establish an e-petition to the Queensland parliament asking the gernment to commit to a bill being tabled, debated and legislated before next year's state election. Nurses Supporting Voluntary Assisted Dying spokeswoman and Sunrise Beach registered nurse Fiona Jacobs is worried that the issue will be put on the backburner after the
Fiona Jacobs parliamentary health committee's end-of-life choices inquiry delivers recommendations later this year. "The Premier has said she believes Queenslanders have to 'at least talk about' voluntary assisted dying. The current Queensland 'end
of life' inquiry has received over 5,500 submissions telling harrowing stories of people suffering at the end of their lives and of the ongoing trauma experienced by families for years afterward," Fiona said. "So many Queenslanders are fighting hard to achieve legislation for voluntary assisted dying. We'd like all of them to support this petition." The Queensland Parliamentary Health Committee will deliver its "Recommendations" into End of Life Choices in November and Parliament will go into recess soon after for the Christmas/summer break. The e-petition can be accessed at https://www.parliament.qld.gov. au/work-of-assembly/petitions/ petition-details?id=3170 and closes on 13 October. ●

PLAYING SAFE BY MARGARET MACCOLL Determined by Council-endorsed working and reference groups, concept designs for Cooroy's $5 million nature-based, all-abilities playground on a former sawmill site were released this week with high praise from Councillors at Monday's General Committee meeting. Council obtained a $2.8 million grant for the project with Council's input to be about $2.3 million Ratepayers will pay a one-off $11 or 1% increase in the general rate. Cr Ingrid Jackson, who was absent from the meeting, posted on Facebook that in addition to $345,000 already spent by Council ongoing annual maintenance and operational costs were estimated at $300,000 plus annual budgeted depreciation costs of about $200,000. She questioned whether the expense was the best use of ratepayer's money and said she would not support the "non-strategic asset". Cr Frank Pardon said the playground provided an additional opportunity to provide an extra 60 car parks and the "pedestrianisation" of the area between the library and playground site that Cooroy which had been called for in the area. "It will be a fantastic outcome not just for Cooroy but for the whole shire," he said.
Mayor Tony Wellington likened the project to the Park Road boardwalk and described it as a "place-making opportunity for Cooroy" that residents would be proud of once they see it completed. The meeting heard the public had not previously been consulted as the playground's design concepts had to first be tested and put through risk assessment. "This isn't a playground like any other playground. It's a highly engineered, superbly crafted infrastructure," Cr Wellington said. Recommendations were made at the meeting to release the concept plans for public consultation, conduct a site flood study, complete a contaminated land check and develop 3D imagery as well as authorise staff to call for Expressions of Interest for the design, construction and maintenance of the playground. The decision will be finalised at Council's Ordinary Meeting on Thursday from 6pm. ●
A 41-year-old Noosaville woman appeared in Noosa Magistrates Court on Tuesday 6 August after being charged with allegedly stealing close to $1 million dollars from a Hastings Street restaurant. Detectives from Noosa Heads Criminal Investigations Branch charged Jodie Nuske with one count of stealing as a servant, following a two-year investigation after a complaint was received from the restaurant owner at Bistro C. Magistrate Haydn Stjernqvist told the court that it was likely there would be "more accountants than solicitors involved" in preparing the "fairly large" brief for the court. Police prosecutor Allison Johnstone told the court that the alleged stolen amount was $768,888.82. Police allege the money was stolen from Bistro C over a period spanning from 2013 to 2017 and it is believed Nuske was employed at the restaurant for 18 years. The case was adjourned until
Jodie Nuske entering the Noosa Magistrates Court on Tuesday 6 August. 17 September, with no appearance required from Nuske on the next mention. The woman was asked to surrender her passport to Noosa Magistrates Court, with the continuation of current bail conditions imposed. ●

SIVA DENIED ASYLUM IN NOOSA Sri Lankan refugee Siva Kumar has had his application for asylum in Australia rejected and with no further legal avenues to explore will be forced to find another country to welcome him. Siva said despite spending about $80,000 on legal costs the government informed him it was not the right way to apply. Now on a temporary visa Siva said he was still working hard in his restaurant, Raj Indian Restaurant in Noosaville while he tries to obtain a Sri Lankan passport so that he can apply for asylum in another country such as Canada or New Zealand where he can move with his partner
who is Taiwanese and their eight month old daughter. Siva is hoping he may be able to remain on temporary visa in Australia until the lease on his restaurant runs out next year. He said it remains unsafe for him to return to live in Sri Lanka. Siva journeyed to Australia after his brother was murdered and he became a target of a group of people bent on causing him harm during a time of civil unrest in the country. Siva worked as a chef in Columbo. He moved to another city to avoid the violence and worked as a butcher. "They tried to kill me," he said. "I ended up in hospital."
His father and his family told him he should leave in order to survive. His trip to Australia from the capital of Columbo was not as he envisaged, only discovering before boarding that his 14-day boat ride to freedom was aboard a very small, overcrowded fishing vessel containing 45-50 people. The sea was rough with waves crashing over the boat and there was little food or water. "It was so terrifying," he said. "I thought we were not going to make it. Every day I prayed to God." The boat made land on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, 2750km northwest of Perth. From there he was placed
Siva Kumar in detention on Christmas Island, Perth, Cairns and Brisbane before settling in 2013 in Noosa. ●

STRADE BIANCHE DRAWS IN THE CROWD Di and Martin Bentley have taken their Gitane tandem on regular trips around Australia including one from Adelaide to Melbourne and last Saturday they participated together in the Strade Bianche piccolo ride, one of several rides in the event. Taking the back seat Di joked that she could take it easy and enjoy the scenery while Martin did the hard yards but with the brakes in his hands she missed out on stops she would have liked at boutiques and homeware shops. But really they like the social side of riding tandem as well as the event which this year attracted 350 riders, an increase of 50 riders on last year. "We're together and we can talk to one another," Di said of the tandem. In the vein of the Eroica rides through Europe, Africa and China the Strade Bianche (French for white roads) attracted riders of steel framed bicycles with down tube gear shifters along dirt roads. Committee member Warren Smith said participants came this year from across Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the US to the social rides which showcase their bikes and the Noosa hinterland. â—? 10 NOOSA TODAY

HOMELESSNESS TALK INSPIRES BY MARGARET MACCOLL Up to 1600 people are homeless on any night on the Sunshine Coast, St Vincent de Paul Society Sunshine Coast Corporate and Community Sleepout committee chair Sue Stack told more than 100 politicians, business and community members who last Friday night slept out just one night at the Vinnies Community Sleepout raising $75,000 for affordable housing. Matthew Kratiuk spent his first night sleeping out in years when he joined them but there were many nights in his past when it was his only choice. "Today life is simple," he said. "I'm happy, healthy, have a good relationship and am living in a place so far beyond what my reality had been for such a long time." Matthew grew up in a loving, middle class home with a father an accountant and a mother a nurse. His parents separated when he was about 14 and Matthew started to rebel. He was expelled from the Grammar school he attended. He went to live with his father in the Sydney beachside suburb of Cronulla. When his father started drinking heavily so did he. They were two angry men living under one roof. By age 16 Matthew had been expelled from Cronulla State School and was living on the street. For a while he lived on someone's couch but people get sick of looking after you, he said, and as hard as it is for them they kick you out. "It profoundly changed the way I was as a human being. There's an anxiety that never leaves you," he said. He slept in parks and begged for money at the train station, embarassed to see kids he'd gone to school with. "It put a wedge in my vision - I felt I would never be like them". His life spiralled out of control. He moved to the Gold Coast and began smoking ice every day. "Crime ruled my life - drugs, women. One day I woke up in jail," he said. He joined a bike gang and moved to Perth. He had become a violent career criminal who carried a gun and had been on the receiving end of death threats. He moved back to Sydney, pushed away his family. At a low point with nowhere to sleep and no food he decided it was time to check out. He wrote a letter to his family. In the moment he held a gun to his own head he remembered a happy time as a boy with his younger brother when his parents had bought them a golden retriever. Instead of pulling the trigger he typed rehab 12 NOOSA TODAY

into his phone. He had been an ice addict from age 16 to 33. "I had no idea how to live, how to work," he said. For Matthew the real turning point came when he walked into a chapel and a woman from St Vincent de Paul spoke to him, gave him a hug, said she loved him and it was going to be OK. He broke down in tears. "She was willing to look past the broken," he said. "That changed me. I was in a place where I could trust someone." Five years on Matthew now works as a sales director and consultant. In the past year Vinnies helped almost 15,000 people on the Sunshine Coast to the tune of $600,000, Sue Stack said.Noosa MP Sandy Bolton told participants at the Maroochy surf club sleepout that after decades of trying it was
very frustrating that Noosa still had no emergency accommodation for people who were homeless. We talk about homelessness as though it's a choice. How wrong this is, she said. Ms Bolton said while the reasons for homelessness were complex the costs to the community and the individuals concerned was great in terms of it affects on a person's self esteem, ability to work, health and safety. She said affordable housing was calculated at 30 per cent of a person's income. With the average income in Noosa being $600 per week there was no affordable accommodation in the region. Small lot and caravan park housing was only available to those in the retirement sector but it was possible to create a model of housing for others, she said. It could
be dynamic, located in industrial precincts, atop shops or on local government land not being used that could be loaned for this purpose. "It's time for the talk to transfer into action," she said. USC Professor Jim Lagopoulos, director of Nind and Neuroscience Thompson Institute, a free mental health facility, spoke of the link between homelessness and mental illness. He said up to 50 per cent of homeless people had some mental health illness and their lack of a home increased their likelihood of other physical illness. The stress of homelessness can bring out mental health symptoms in people with no prior mental illness, he said. For more visit www.vinnies. org.au or vinniescommunitysleepout on Facebook. â—?

MAKING HOUSES AFFORDABLE BY MARGARET MACCOLL Bike enthusiasts Dave Young and Lindell Gittoes combined their love of cycling with their efforts to find people affordable accommodation at this year's Strade Bianche event when they auctioned a tandem steel framed bike restored by Dave. Dave said riding tandem enabled the couple to share the experience of riding. it enabled them to talk to
each other while riding, gave Lindell more confidence to ride on the road and with a trailer, allowed them to bring their dogs along. Having found a tandem online Dave spent time and quite a bit of money restoring it before it was auctioned on the weekend with funds going to Purpose property management and sales. Managed by Lindell the not-for-profit real estate agency was set up two years ago and
works with community housing group Coast 2 Bay. The registered charity has 34 rental properties on their books including 13 in Noosaville and three in Cooroy. Under a government funded program property owners are offered a financial incentive from the government and their properties are rented at a 25 per cent saving. NEW WOMEN’S HEALTH AND WELLBEING PLAN Speaking at the official launch on 8 August of Laurel Place's new Sunshine Coast Women's Health and Wellbeing Service, the Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Di Farmer said the initiative provides longer term support for women and their children recovering from their
experience of domestic and sexual violence and trauma. "This year, we've invested $2.4 million for Laurel Place to extend that support through a range of new services which include the new Sunshine Coast Health and Wellbeing Service," she said. "That might mean help to
secure safe housing or to re-enter the workforce, or it might mean assistance to access health services like alcohol and drug support. "It also includes counselling to help women move through trauma, and parenting support to help them rebuild their family." Karren Aspinall Executive
Director of Laurel Place said for over 35 years the service has been providing speciality support to the Sunshine Coast and Gympie and more recently Caboolture and South Burnett communities. "Our approach to working with clients is based on an understanding that every woman's journey to recovery is different," she said. ●

NOT ASKED It was welcome news to hear from Jennifer Sadler that the impact of any current or future residential and commercial development in Cooroy and the associated increase in vehicle traffic is not an issue. Unfortunately we still need to get the tissues out about the lack of consultation over the possible, potential, unknown traffic problem a new playground might bring. Clearly you are opposed to this adventure playground and are miffed because you cannot object to it. So If there is a slight increase in traffic or a few less parking spaces because of this playground, then let me be the first to apologise. Let me apologise that you were not asked. Also let me apologise on behalf of all the young families who would rather take their children to a park rather than let them spend time in front of a computer; let me apologise for children enjoying an outdoor adventure; let me apologise for all the local children having somewhere new to meet, play and socialise; and let me apologise for any families who may travel to Cooroy and enjoy the playground when it’s built in our vibrant town. Perhaps when the playground is built you may visit with your family and enjoy the laughter of children playing, or perhaps I am naive? Steve Anschutz, Cooroy

If you have a photo for Lenscape, please email to newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au. Progress Report. I was extremely disappointed by the lack of councillor introspection and debate; for example, when the Capital Program Delivery Status was listed for discussion (the attached report had 136 jobs listed), the only words spoken were by the mayor who said: “I notice the percentage has increased by one percent, from 96 per cent to 97 per cent". The agenda item was then moved and passed unanimously without comment. As a corollary, Capital Expenditure for July is 55 per cent below budget. This is a contrived result made possible by deferring some annual budgeted work to future year budgets. John Lobb, Peregian Springs
PROPOSED BRONZE TIMBER CUTTER TEWANTIN SCULPTURE In the 1860s European settlers arrived in the area in the search for soft and hardwood timbers. Tewantin exists initially due to the development of the timber industry during the 1860s and later as a port for paddle
steamers carrying logs, seafood and people to Brisbane and servicing the goldfields in Gympie. The Tewantin township was surveyed in 1871 and grew with the movement of people and goods between Brisbane and the Gympie goldfields. For many years the Tewantin Heritage and Historical Society has been aware that there is no historical representation in Tewantin of the timber industry which was the economic backbone of the town and the basis for everything that followed. We hope you agree that a public artwork like the proposed bronze sculpture (perhaps with audio as an additional educational tool, and a kauri tree planted alongside) is a great way to show the respect Noosa Shire has for our pioneers and this part of its early history and that such an important art work would be sited with prominence in a spatially and philosophically significant location - one which would draw attention to the importance of the timber industry to the establishment and subsequent growth of Tewantin. With support from our Noosa 12422414-SN29-19
The last Noosa Council Services and Organisation Committee Meeting (6 August) had 19 agenda items, perhaps too many for a proper evaluation. There were yearly reports on the Peregian Beach Digital Hub, Capital Program Delivery Status, Noosa Holiday Parks, Noosa Aquatic Centre, Noosa Leisure Centre, The J and Bicentennial Community Centre, Noosa Community Support plus Quarterly Reports for Infrastructure Department, Corporate Services Department, Community Services Department, Executive Services Department and Operational Plan
community, we can pursue the support of our council and proceed towards securing the funds required to advance this project. Apathy never achieved anything. Please follow the link below to a really short two-minute opinion poll. C’mon, the more people who participate, the better the beliefs of the people will be represented. Be smart - do your part - let your voice be heard ... and thanks!! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ GD87NR9 Wendy Ivanusec, TH and HS honorary secretary

The consensus (a theory devoid of any proof) is that the .04 per cent of anthropogenic CO2 in the atmosphere is causing critical climate change. Last week Steve Hall makes the supporting case that like a “toxic poison” the .04 per cent of CO2 indeed accounted for these dire changes in the weather. If this is in fact the case would someone please explain to us why the other 99.96 per cent (i.e. in the order of 2500 times greater) of natural CO2 in the atmosphere is assumed by the IPCC, Steve Hall and others to have no influence on changes in the weather/climate? Secondly how does the very sustenance of life on the planet become equated as a toxic poison? Richard Deane, Noosa
EMERGENCY? Apart from a feelgood announcement by the Council, what more do they want us to do, and what do they propose? The reality is that our country is doing all it can and more, even though in the global scene we do not make any difference at all to regional, much less global emissions. But , in the absence of anything concrete from our mayor, here are a few suggestions: · Declare Noosa open to nuclear energy to replace coal generation; · Encourage scientific, technology and research firms to come to Noosa to explore bulk, cheap, easy to transport energy food for livestock; · Develop water diffusion and irrigation; · Build more dams; · Develop in shire rubbish and garbage processing, so that the waste generated in shire stays in shire. Declarations of emergency mean nothing without actions. I am amazed that this nonsense was carried unanimously - didn’t one councillor object to this meaningless, greenie, virtue signalling gesture? Science, technology, innovation and creativity will solve climate change issues, this sort of feelgood rubbish will not . Paul O’Brien, Noosa ● noosatoday.com.au

Chiaroscuro - Ocean Alley
Church of the Open Sky by Nat Young
Spotlight
Ocean Alley's second album Chiaroscuro is a sun drenched, genre bending delight. The band has captivated audiences around the country with their infectious melody lines and memorable blend of psychedelic-surf-rock. Their track 'Confidence' took out top spot in the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2018, with their acclaimed second album 'Chiaroscuro' voted #2 on Triple J's 2018 album of the year listener poll. ●
This gripping film follows the true story of a team of reporters and editors at the Boston Globe that relentlessly investigate a shocking child molestation cover-up by the Catholic Church. Starring Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams, Spotlight is a tense investigative dramatic-thriller, tracing the steps to one of the biggest cover-ups in modern times. The film is out on DVD and can be viewed on multiple streaming services such as Netflix. ●
Candid and wryly observed, Church of the Open Sky explores what it means to be a surfer, with a collection of true stories of Australian world champion surfer Nat Young's surfing life - the friends, foes and heroes he's met along the way. In celebration of the release of his new book, Annie's Books On Peregian will present 'An evening with Nat Young' at Noosa Land and Sea Brewery on Thursday 12 September from 6pm. Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest.
NOOSA GOES WILDE Widely acknowledged as one of England's funniest plays, Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest is a masterpiece combination of love, logic and language. Taking place in a world full of gentlemen and ladies, the play sees Jack, Algernon, Gwendolyn and Cecily embark on tumultuous romantic journeys, under the watchful eye of the inimitable Lady Bracknell. A fresh take on Wilde's comic masterpiece, Jane River's directs one of the most well-crafted stage
comedies of all time at Noosa Arts Theatre, opening in September. Crowd favourite Stephen Moore is back from Sydney to play butlers Lane and Merriman. Stephen was with Noosa Arts Theatre for years, he won 13 Best Actor, 2 Best Supporting Actor, 2 Best Director, 2 Best Sound, 3 Adjudicator's Awards and much more, all whilst he was with the theatre. His immense talent is why director Jane Rivers has called him back from his home town of Sydney to star in

NOOSA’S BLOOMERS Orchids are one of the easiest plants to cultivate especially in the sub tropical climate on the Sunshine Coast and hinterland. There are in excess of 30,000 species of orchids in the world found on all continents except Antarctica. Orchids are broken up into two main groups, the ones that grow on trees (epiphytes) and the one that grow on the ground (terrestrials). You do need to know the difference as they have completely different growing conditions. This is where joining an Orchid Society helps. I have plants growing in my garden some in full sun and others in the shade. They definitely look exotic when in flower. Most of the orchids in cultivation originate in South America or South East Asia so need a little more care than our Australian natives in the way of water and humidity. Orchids hate being grown in pots but human nature is to control nature so we cultivate them in pots to sell or transport easily. When growing in pots you should repot every two years if you pot in organic potting media such as pine bark munity and around the world. Come and join our group of friendly, likeminded women and have fun raising awareness for local initiatives including surviving domestic violence, homelessness, education and health. The Club meets monthly for dinner. All visitors welcome. Contact: Margaret 0448 011 422.

Elite netballers Laura Scherian and Annika Lee-Jones were interviewed about their journey to the top by Speak Up Engage presenters Toby Bogert, Laura-Leith Pettigrew and Bridget Kelly. The players explained how exercise can help maintain a positive mindset. "The players combine intense netball-focused training with naturebased exercise.Co-presenter Laura said the players had a very holistic approach. Bike-loving Queenslanders are being offered the chance to help transform their streets by volunteering to be part of Australia's biggest count of bike riders, Super Tuesday North on Tuesday 3 September. As part of Bicycle Network's ninth Super Tuesday North, local volunteers from six council areas including Noosa are being recruited to help count bike riders at more than 240 locations across Queensland during the morning commute. The information collected is then passed on to participating councils who use the data to identify which routes need improvement and to track the success of previous upgrades.Locals who volunteer to count bike riders will also earn a $60 donation for a charity or local community group of their choice. Bicycle Network spokesperson Anthea Hargreaves said that volunteering to help on Super Tuesday is not only a great way to make it easier for people to ride a bike, it's an easy way to raise money

SHE’S ON AGAIN FOR THE TIGERS The Roccocos Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers will host arch rival Maroochydore this Saturday in the Hart Sports Cup second semi-final at the Noosa Village Autos Oval. In what will be another intriguing duel between these two great Suncoast clubs the winner will advance directly to the big dance held at the home of Aflq Yetinga on August 31. However I personally know the Tigers aren't looking that far ahead yet with much hard work to do to make it to the last day in August. Senior coach Adams Bovalino has been keeping a level head
across the board and the duel Tiger premiership player knows just how hard it is to get to a grand final. "No way known are we getting ahead of ourselves and nor should we.The Roos are a terrific outfit we respect that and we have earned the right to host a second semi which of course was one of our goals. And that's it! No Grand final talk at all with heaps of hard work to do. In saying that I can't be happier with how the senior group have trained over the past fortnight. You can really notice the intensity levels rise and their focus and commitment has been great. It's such an exciting time
of the year and we just can't wait for Saturday." Tony Brennan's Noosa reserves play Mayne in the second semi as the extremely impressive twos attempt to extend their unbeaten 2019 into a forth straight grand final. Both sides look to almost be a full strength with only the one weeks suspension of Will Odwyer a negative for the Tigers senior side. Reserve grade starts at 11.45am with the main game at 2.15pm with again a massive local Aussie rules crowd expected. A gold coin donation will apply on the gate with proceeds going to
the tigers favourite charity 'Sunshine Butterflies' who have been a long time partner of the club. The Noosa Tigers invite all those to the club tonight to not only watch the seniors go through their paces but to discuss preparation for an under 18 (colts) team in 2020. If the club is serious about heading to the GAFL a sustainable colts team is a must. Thursday's meeting will outline what the Tigers are planning to do with regard to logistics, costs and support for our future Colts starting with season 2020. Meeting starts at 6pm. ●
NOOSA CLASSIC SHORTLISTED FOR EVENT AWARDS The 2018 Noosa Classic Gran Fondo cycling event has received three nominations for the upcoming Australia Event Awards. The Noosa Classic will go up against some of Australia's most significant and large-scale events in the categories of Best New Event, Best Regional Event (Queensland) and Best Community Event. The 2018 event was held on 26
August and its inaugural year was a resounding success thanks to the incredible support from the Noosa community. The day was not without its challenges due to a torrential downpour but thanks to the hard work from volunteers, partners and of course the riders themselves the day marked a memorable first outing. CLUBS IN PREPARATION MODE nippers is of the utmost importance as it is seen as a vital factor in the future development of tomorrow's lifesavers and lifeguards. The number of lifeguards, who have come from the nipper programs of our clubs, is a great indication of the importance and success of this organisation. On the busy side of things it is good news for that important body of Sunshine people, the Supporters. The rebuilding of their Sunshine Beach surf club is definitely on target for an end of year finish. With upstairs walls under construction work on the roof section can't be too far away. We wish them fair weather
and good luck. On the training level, dates for proficiency have been set and training courses for bronze and IRB teams are now being prepared. Over the hill at Noosa, IRB, bronze courses and boat training for all crews is well under way. The month of September will once again see the very successful first aid teams reform and commence training. Under the supervision of Hall of Fame Coach, Lenore Grice and assistant Charlotte Webber, last years teams achieved the best first aid results in the clubs history. In 1949-50 season, Noosa moved into the world of surf boat competition; and this has now become something of a tradition. To uphold this the Noosa boat section recently sent a team of 18 rowers and support personnel, (equipped with 3 surf boats and an IRB support

In the Noosa River the trevally are on the move throughout the lower reaches and the clear water requires baits and lures to be presented on the lightest possible lines. Anglers using 4lb will excel during these conditions and this makes a great time to put your skills to practice when fishing this light. Lower down in the water column small micro jigs work well for getting the bite when the fish are sitting on the bottom. If headed up river the ski run is worth sounding around as trevally and jewies are often found schooling up here. Live baits work well as do soft vibes and 4 inch paddle tail soft plastics. Adding scent really helps too as does tying a loop knot to help free up the lures action. Be sure to find out how to tie one as picky fish will spot a poorly presented lure. ●

With the winds picking up slightly we saw only the larger boats or experienced skippers crossing the bar as the swell was very close together and combined with a fading ground swell so slow and steady was the best approach. Toward the end of the week we had westerly winds and super clean waves so it was game on! North reef was popular for the charters and they came home with a mixed bag of cobia, snapper, pearlies, lipper and some sizable jewfish. Mixed baits dropped down on paternoster rigs proving the popular choice with squid, mullet and pilchard baits the popular choice. In closer sunshine reef had smaller squire, lipper, coral trout, pearl perch and longtail tuna. Anyone who has a baitrunner style of reel would do well to use it here as these reels are perfect for floating baits in a burley trail. Surf fishing was also quieter in the lead up to the new moon, however a few small jewies have been landed around the mouth of the Maroochy and Noosa rivers. Anglers have reported higher numbers of tailor along the North Shore and are taking whole and cut pilchard baits and squid on strip bait rigs. During the daytime, bream, whiting, dart and flathead are around with a few big flathead
vessel ) off on a road trip to Yeppoon in Central Queensland for a preseason training camp. The program consisted of 8 hours of rowing over 3 days: on the teams arrival they were joined by crews from Yeppoon and Maroochydore. The first rowing sessions for all crews started on the Friday morning with an 18km row to North Keppel Island. This was followed on Saturday with a 30 minute row to Considine Bay where they spent the morning on sweep/rower development, followed by a couple of hours in the afternoon of short course racing. The pre-season camp was finished with a 2 hour slog back to the mainland in tough conditions. The season ahead is looking good with a possible 12 crews (men and women) on the water, backed up by a great support group of parents and workers. We wish them well. ●

Another top award for Sunshine came when out-going JAC President Shaun Lees received the Andy Frizzell Award for his dedication and work with the nipper program. LIFE OF BRINE
PHIL JARRATT
SHOCK OF THE NEW SUBSIDES Now that I'm over the shock of the new, and now that I've found a new restaurant with just two tables and old school prices, I'm getting used to the pace of life again here in our village in Bali. Sure, the traffic is worse, the construction noise at times unbearable, the surge of people on the street at sunset difficult to manage, but hey, life could be a lot worse. Take a walk around the hood in the early morning or late afternoon and the old world is still there, if you're looking for it. Take our neighbours, for example, the Wiras, from whom the compound we stay in is leased. Three generations of Wiras live just behind the garden wall, and in the decade we have known them they have moved from subsistence rice farmers to rising middle class land managers, for better or for worse, without even really knowing it, apart from having the readies to pay for increasingly elaborate Hindu ceremonies. The matriarch, Ibu Wira, who used to be our pembantu (housekeeper), passed away a couple

of years ago, but the patriarch, Pak Wira, is still going strong. He spends his days looking after his grandsons, his fighting cocks and his garden, and his nights as a security guard at the posh Spanish villa compound across the way. We chat in the gang (lane) alongside the compound in the evenings, when Balinese like to be sociable. Whenever I arrive in Bali I rent the same motor scooter from Putu, Pak Wira's son, who is also a surf instructor. Pak Wira's daughter, Kadek, has inherited her mother's role as pembantu, and her husband, Made Budi, looks after the pool cleaning and numerous other chores with a smile. Their son, also Putu, is possibly the cutest little boy in Bali, who never fails to greet us with a high-five and a thumbs-up, followed by an air kiss as we depart his presence. Understandably, this cracks Pak Wira up. He cackles into his kretek cigarette, puts a hand on my arm, and once again I am reminded of why I love Bali, despite everything. Twice a year the Wiras get dressed up in their ceremonial costumes and come with a Hindu priest to bless the small temple that sits out the back just beyond the rack that houses my surfboard. If we are in town we are always included in

the ceremony, almost family. I mentioned the new restaurant in the hood. Well, actually there are many, but unlike the garish monsters on the main street, this one is a secret, only revealed by a friend under enormous pressure. It's down a gang beside a hideous new hotel development between us and the beach. A handwritten sign on a creased surfboard suggests there may be a restaurant down there, but most people aren't going to take the chance. You walk through a humble home, up a narrow flight of stairs, and there it is. A rooftop garden and a two-table cafe serving the best home-cooked Mex I've had since, well three months ago in Mex! Made, who used to work with Bobby Radiasa at the G-Land Surf Camp, is the affable host, and Jeff, a dude from Cleveland who escaped the rat race of the car rental game, is the affable chef. It's like eating in some one's kitchen. Kids wander in and out and draw pictures in art pads on the floor while a surf vid plays from the corner TV, a troubadour wanders in and picks tasty Beatles riffs on a 12-string in another corner. People come and go, they have to because there are only two tables, but a steady crew of locals hang out, loving it.
MEXY MEMORIES Speaking of things Mexican, as we were, I ran into that great flashy surfer Jared Mell in the surf the other morning, then watched him ride a few lefts at our local in his usual flamboyant style. No, Jared's not Mexican, but he could be, and I've surfed with him there too. But his styling the other morning put me in mind of our recent trip to the Mexi Logfest, and one of the few guys I've seen in recent times who enjoy their surfing, and show it, as much as Jared. I'd never met Dane Perlee, originally from the Pacific Northwest, now based in San Diego, but we surfed together quite a bit in the free surf sessions at La Saladita in May, and I just loved that every move he pulled brought a smile to his face. Paddling back up the line, we seemed to spend a lot of time laughing. So when a picture by Sarah Lee popped up on my Facebook feed this week, I just couldn't resist. ●
