Mum’s $50K shock win By Brendan Rees A Berwick mum had told of her "whirlwind" experience of scooping up $50,000 on Millionaire Hot Seat while helping raise money for sick kids. Lisa Valavanis couldn't believe her luck on the show which aired on Thursday 29 August saying "It's still something I haven't comes to terms with." She was part of the My Room Telethon episode which raised money for children's cancer charity My Room - with her win also matched by Channel Nine and donated to the charity.

The Kmart convocation will be without answers for another fortnight as the proposed shopping complex tabled for discussion was deferred. Set to vote on the complex at the Town Planning meeting, Cardinia Shire councillors moved the application to the next General Council meeting to allow further information to be considered. "It's a big decision to be made," Mayor Graeme Moore said. But it's not just Kmart which councillors will be voting on. The proposed complex is set to include a Kmart, Coles supermarket, a cinema, medical centre and various specialty retail
and food/beverage outlets. Taking into account a number of constraints, council will be forced to look at whether the site near Cardinia Life at 900 Princes Highway is the right place for the development, taking into account whether there would be adequate car parking to service the area and if the development would have a negative economic impact on other businesses in the area. Central Ward councillor Michael Schilling said it's no secret people in Pakenham have been looking for a new retail destination. "You see a growing population so people naturally want more options," Cr Schilling said. Unable to comment on the specifics, Cr
Schilling wouldn't reveal his personal viewpoint on the project, but his fellow Central Ward councillor Collin Ross took to social media to throw his support behind the store. "Pakenham 'desperately' needs a Kmart and cinema complex," Cr Ross said. "We need this store - it will become one of the most popular stores for Pakenham. I will 100 percent support this project." But the Pakenham community was quick to take to social media to express their disappointment in reports that Cardinia Shire Council was set to reject the development. "Good on you Cardinia Council. Just keep building new estates but have nothing here for the people to do but walk around our pathetic
excuse of a shopping centre," one social media user said. "Might be time to refresh the council, this type of development would be great for a growing township of this size," another added. A Kmart spokesperson told the Gazette: "We are always looking for new locations to bring people our everyday low prices, and that includes Pakenham." "At this time we will continue to explore store location options and advise the community with a formal announcement on completion," the spokesperson added. Councillors will vote on the great Kmart debate at the next general council meeting on Monday 16 September.
