Reading is their superpower Students and staff channelled their inner literary love for Book Week celebrations at Noble Park Secondary College. Superman, Batman and the Hulk made an appearance, along with various Hogwarts students and magical beings from other universes. Even the three blind mice and Disney villain Maleficent made an appearance for the day for the school's 'novel' occasion. Book Week is an annual event that celebrates books, Australian authors and illustrators and highlights the importance of reading.

A woman has been denied bail after multiple breaches of community corrections orders over several years. The woman appeared in the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 3 September, supported by her father, after offending while on a community corrections order. She had also failed to complete the community work involved in her corrections order. The accused had failed to appear in court on 28 March this year while on bail relating to offences earlier that month. According to court papers, the accused had stolen a Mitsubishi Lancer on 9 March 2019. On the same day she had been charged with being in possession of methyl amphetamine, and $551 in cash, suspected of being the proceeds of crime. On 5 August 2019 she was intercepted while driving and was charged with being in possession of methyl amphetamine, driving whilst disqualified and giving a false name and address to police. Police also found false plates on the vehicle. Police allege the accused admitted to giving a false name due to her outstanding matters, and was unaware of the drugs in the car. According to court papers,
the woman has a significant criminal history of 47 prior charges dating back to 2014. Her father told the court he would be happy for his daughter to live with him, his wife and grandchild - the accused’s child - if she were to receive bail. He said he would report the accused to police if she committed any further offences, insisting he wouldn’t let his daughter “jeopardise my family and grandson”. The man told the court he ran support groups for people addicted to drugs, and would be able to assist his daughter as she got back on track. “It’s difficult for me as a father to sit here,” he told the court. “No matter what she needs to do, I’ll be there for her.” A lawyer for the accused told the court her client had the support of a court integrated services program with a plan in place for her potential bail, and had also completed rehabilitation programs while in custody. But magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the accused had a history of breaching community corrections orders, noting she had had numerous opportunities to engage in treatment and rehabilitation since 2014. Her bail application was refused and the case was adjourned to reappear in Ringwood Magistrates’ Court later this month.

The program will use locally-sourced ingredients to create healthy breakfasts for school kids.
School with tasty lesson Several schools in the Dandenong area have been invited to participate in the State Government's School Breakfast Clubs Expansion Program from term one or two in 2020. Member for Dandenong Gabrielle Williams made the announcement on Monday 26 August. The five schools are Dandenong North Primary School, Lyndale Greens Primary School, Chalcot Lodge Primary School, Dandenong High School, and Lyndale Secondary College. "We know that students need proper meals every day to help them concentrate, learn and be their best while at school," Ms Williams said. "The expansion the School Breakfast Clubs to local kids in Dandenong will mean students have the fuel they need to get the most out of their education." The program will also provide lunches and
school holiday supplies to students who need it, on top of breakfast. A total of 1000 government primary, secondary, P-12 and special schools are set to be included in the program by the end of 2020. Where possible, School Breakfast Clubs Expansion Program products are sourced locally from Victorian producers and manufacturers, a commitment that will continue as the program expands. The breakfast and lunch menu offerings include a range of healthy options such as muesli, Vita Brits, milk, baked beans, fruit cups, fresh apples, Vegemite and honey, and lunch bowls. More than 8.8 million breakfasts have been delivered to Victorian students since the program started in 2016.
Life got off to a ruff start for Rudolph the upside down nose puppy. In late March this year, as a tiny puppy, he was surrendered to the Australian Animal Protection Society (AAPS). The six-week-old English Staffordshire Bull Terrier pup was the last one left of his litter and was unwanted because of what people called his “deformity“. The shelter took him in, not knowing if he would have a positive outcome but determined to do what they could to help him. A vet performed an admission check and declared Rudolph had, in layperson’s terms, an upside down nose and a smaller than normal chest cavity - none of which had affected his quality of life so far.Even the vet had never seen anything like it before, and the AAPS team said they were “baffled“ by the snuffly chap. Rudolph - Rudy for short - was placed into foster care with plans in place to have him undergo surgery to correct his nose defect. On Sunday 25 August he underwent a rhinoscopy and cobalation to correct his upside down nose at Southpaws Specialty Surgery for Animals in Moorabbin, and came through with flying colours. A cobalation is a minimally invasive technology for effective dissection and removal of tissue, used in humans for ear nose and throat procedures such as a tonsillectomy. It’s likely that as he gets older, Rudy may have respiratory issues similar to pugs or French bulldogs, which means he might need limited exercise in warmer weather. Apart from this he is expected to live a full and healthy life with, at this stage, no on-going surgeries required. And in a heartwarming twist, once Rudy receives his final medical clearances his foster family are keen to make it official by adopting him.
Rudy recovering from his surgery to correct his nose.
Baby Rudy was a normal puppy despite what some saw as a "deformity". AAPS footed the medical bills for Rudy’s life-changing surgery, which total $2100 plus extra for his care and appointments. The community-based not-for-profit, which relies on volunteers, community support and op shops for financial assistance, is currently hoping to raise funds to help cover Rudy’s expenses. Those interested in helping are asked to visit www.aaps.org.au/supportus to make an affordable donation and to write RUDY in the comment section so the funds can be allocated accordingly.

IN BRIEF Male killed in crash
Suicide support goes multicultural By Danielle Kutchel They came in pairs, in small groups and on their own, but it wasn't long before The Castle's space was filled up with people longing to be heard. They had gathered to share their thoughts on the shape of Australia's mental health system and what could be done to improve it, in a town-hall style meeting facilitated by Christine Morgan, who was appointed to the role of Australia's first national suicide prevention advisor in July. Since then, Ms Morgan has been touring the country and meeting with the community in various parts of Australia to gather their input before she reports to the government on how to reach its ambitious aim of zero suicides. Dandenong was the second-last stop on the tour, chosen in part for its culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) population. Ms Morgan had previously told the Dandenong Journal that some multicultural communities face additional barriers to mental health support, from cultural mores and un-
derstandings of mental illness to gender and age divides, past trauma, resettlement in a new country and even a lack of language to cover the vast topic of mental health. On the night, guests shared harrowing stories of stigma and mistreatment, and a reluctance to admit their mental health struggles to professionals out of fear of the consequences. Others vented their frustration at what they see as inadequate services and skyrocketing out-of-pocket costs for people experiencing mental health challenges, which created barriers to effective treatment. Some suggested making mental health information more culturally aware and building resilience into school curriculums through wellbeing programs and strategies, and others wanted to see person-centred funding. All agreed that the stigma around mental health needs to be removed. Ms Morgan and her team gathered feedback via a mobile phone app and handwritten notes, promising to collate this with the information they had learned at their other stops on the tour.
Man dies in house fire
Vern, a Pakenham resident who attended on behalf of his sons who he said have a "range of mental health issues", is hopeful that this time, there will be a positive outcome from the process. "Christine Morgan seems to have a good sense of it, and she is saying all the right things, but the question is whether anything happens at the government level because often it goes to the minister and sometimes they get it, and sometimes they don't. Something may happen, or it may not," he said. Ms Morgan said she was pleased with the responses from guests on the night. "I felt there was so much honesty in the room, people really brought themselves and their experiences and thoughts into the room, they were prepared to share the negatives but they came up with some great ideas as to what would work to change the system," she said. Ms Morgan expects to consult with the Federal Health Minister by Christmas this year, with a full report and recommendations due in 2020.
Campaign to support devastated family The family of an Endeavour Hills woman who lost her life when the car they were in was crushed by a falling tree in early August face a long road to recovery. Angie Suryadi, 41, who was a front passenger, tragically died at the scene at Maroondah Highway on Friday 9 August when a tree fell on their moving vehicle on the Black Spur. Her husband Arnold and son Oliver were critically injured in the accident. Arnold is now in a rehabilitation facility learning how to walk again, after having six surgeries. Four-year-old Oliver suffered serious head injuries and has been transitioned from intensive care to the neurology unit at the Royal Children's Hospital. Given the extent of bleeding on Oliver's brain, there is a chance he will never fully recover. Six-year-old Jonathan was uninjured in the crash but needs extensive physiological therapy after witnessing the incident. A GoFundMe campaign has been created to assist with Arnold, Oliver and Jonathan's recovery with over $5,000 raised in 24 hours. Anyone who wishes to donate to support the family can do so at www.gofundme.com/f/ suryadiaditiasvara-family-tragedy.

Warrant executed in Noble Park Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit detectives have arrested several people following the execution of a warrant in Noble Park early on Tuesday 3 September. The warrant which was executed at an address on Corrigan Road at 5.30am is part of Operation Tasma, an investigation into aggravated burglaries committed in the Noble Park area over the past six weeks. At the address investigators arrested seven men and two women, after allegedly finding an amount of methyl amphetamine, heroin, various prohibited weapons which included samurai swords, pistol-grip crossbows and a number of double-edged knives, as well as three sawn-off shotguns. Three men, all aged 35 years, have been charged with various offences including traffick drugs and possessing a traffickable amount of firearms and have beenwere remanded in custody to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates' Court on Wednesday 4 September. Greater Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit Detective Sergeant Ash Penry said that Operation Tasma specifically targeted aggravated burglaries in the area. "Our unit is strongly committed to reducing the incidence of aggravated burglaries and apprehending the people responsible for them," he said. Two women, aged 28 and 29, and three men, aged 31, 46 and 28, are expected to be charged on summons with similar offences.
Hoon gets court On Tuesday 3 September, members of the Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol who were patrolling Dandenong South observed 20 vehicles driving on Pacific Drive. One of the vehicles was observed travelling at a fast rate of speed and in a dangerous manner. The vehicle was intercepted on Kitchen Road with the driver of the vehicle arrested for conduct endangering life and traffic offences. The vehicle was impounded at a cost of $1066 and the driver will be summoned to face court at a later date.

The Wellsprings team took home several Learn Local awards, recognising their work in empowering women.
Hope springs from them By Danielle Kutchel The work of Dandenong's Wellsprings for Women has been recognised by the State Government at the recent Learn Local Awards. The organisation's Creative Enterprising Women program (CEWP) picked up the Pre-accredited Pathway Program Award, and Chithrika Senanayake, a learner at Wellsprings, received with the Ro Allen Award, which recognises Pre-accredited Learner Excellence. Wellsprings itself was named the Learn Local Legend for the southern metropolitan region, for its work in improving the participation rate of isolated and vulnerable women in training, and the Child Minding Champions team was also a finalist in the Volunteer Team Award. The Child Minding Champions are a group
of volunteers who have been trained specifically to look after children while their mothers attend Wellsprings to learn. Chief Executive Officer of Wellsprings, Dalal Smiley, said the Child Minding Champions had made a big difference to Wellsprings' programs. "Lots of women have previously been unable to go and attend classes and be involved in their community because they can't afford childcare or don't have access to it, or they have a few kids so it's costly to do it," she said. In fact, all of Wellsprings' programs are aimed at empowering women and providing them with skills to grow their confidence and independence in a safe, respectful and caring space. CEWP is designed for women with low level English skills, low educational backgrounds or
who have faced barriers to accessing employment in Australia. The program starts with a skills audit of the women to determine what skills they have and how they can use those to become self-employed or own their own microbusiness. Over the course of around 18 months, the organisation works with participants to build their self-belief and business skills through a range of courses covering things like public speaking, financial literacy and computer studies. Participants move through at their own pace and are fully supported on the path to independence, no matter how long it takes. Ms Senanayake was a participant in the program and through CEWP was able to have her reflexology qualification recognised. She has since laid the foundations for her busi-
ness as a mobile reflexology practitioner and also volunteers as an emergency tutor at Wellsprings. "She's over the moon, it's given her a lot of confidence," Ms Smiley explains. "She's very active, eager to learn new things, and very driven - that's because she's been supported and encouraged along the way." The program has received additional funding to continue. Ms Smiley said the Learn Local awards are a "validation" of what Wellsprings does. "We don't enter these awards every year, we really only do it when we feel we have something valuable to show. "This now gives us a big boost really; the awards are like a stamp of recognition."

Life saving skills to teach By Danielle Kutchel Globally, around 140,000 people die each year in situations where their lives could have been saved if somebody had known first aid. Research shows that culturally and linguistically diverse communities can be less likely to be able to identify, describe, or communicate a medical emergency due to language barriers. This has the potential to put some migrant and refugee Australians at greater risk should they find themselves experiencing or witnessing an emergency situation. In an effort to address this problem, on World First Aid Day on Saturday 14 September 2019, Australian Red Cross is aiming to host the nation's largest ever multicultural first aid training session, with free sessions held simul-
taneously in numerous locations around the country. In addition to teaching basic first aid skills, this year's World First Aid Day will take a global focus: on the day, Australian Red Cross will launch its Essential First Aid Guide in 13 nonEnglish languages - Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Vietnamese, Chin, Kurmanji, Swahili, Karen, Spanish, Farsi, French, Tigrinya and Oromo. Fronting the campaign as the Australian Red Cross World First Aid Day official spokesperson is renowned orthopaedic surgeon, author, and former Iraqi refugee, associate professor Munjed Al Muderis. "Australia still has one of the poorest rates of first aid training in the world. This is worrying because unless timely first aid is provided, many severely injured people stand no chance
of survival. It can literally be the difference between life and death," warned Mr Al Muderis. This may be particularly concerning for the nearly 50 percent of Australians for whom English is a second language, he added. "Not knowing how to respond in an emergency situation can have tragic consequences for all involved, so it is vital that every Australian is equipped with first aid knowledge to handle an emergency," said Mr Al Muderis. Australian Red Cross training sessions will be held in Perth, Adelaide, Darwin, Hobart, Launceston, Sydney, Wollongong, Western Sydney, Albury, Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns, and Darwin. "A first aid education is universal. It is not culturally or linguistically specific. As a multicultural country, it is important that all mem-
bers of the community can access this knowledge," said Janie McCullagh, Australian Red Cross spokesperson and trainer. "On September 14, we intend to increase and improve Australia's low first aid knowledge rates amongst new Australians. "We are also inviting all Australians to take action and learn this vital life skill through doing a first aid course," she said. The Dandenong event will be held at the Paddy O'Donoghue Centre, 18-34 Buckley Street, Noble Park between 10.00am and 12.00pm on Saturday 14 September. New migrants and refugees interested in taking part in a free basic first aid training session on World First Aid Day should go to https://www.redcross.org.au/WFAD - places are limited.
New committee has some big plans for Little India By Danielle Kutchel A new committee has been elected for Dandenong's Little India Traders Association. The office bearers are Manmeet Kaur, Steve Khan, Hitesh Shah, Sudesh Singh, K.P. Singh and Shameela Singh. A new public safety initiative aims to reinforce a ’zero tolerance’ approach to inappropriate behaviour in one of Dandenong’s major shopping precincts. Armada Dandenong Plaza recently launched the new initiative which is called ‘Respect Protect Connect’ (RPC). RPC highlights security and safety operations, some of which are new and some that are long term procedures that Centre Management wanted to reinforce. Among these operations are Armada’s security guards and cleaners being fitted with body cams. In addition, a dedicated plain clothes security guard is working within the centre as a ‘youth liaison officer’, encouraging youths going through hardship to redirect their antisocial behaviour into positive activities such as the ongoing, Music Making A Difference
(MMAD) program, offered free of charge at a studio within the centre. Other initiatives include plaza retail staff taking part in training workshops with Dandenong Police to develop skills in identifying and diffusing potential negative behaviour or security breaches before they arise. Centre Management also hold monthly meetings with Dandenong Police to discuss proactive opportunities to minimise the chances of incidences occurring within the centre. It follows Armada’s support for other proactive public safety campaigns in the past, like ‘Coffee with a Cop’, for which the several events over the past few years. All retail staff, contractors and Centre Management staff are wearing lanyards promoting the RPC message to shoppers. Retailers are also promoting the campaign by displaying
RPC posters within their stores. The RPC message is also displayed on signage at all the centre’s entries, and digital screens within Armada Dandenong Plaza as well as on the centre’s Facebook page and website. “The campaign has been really well received and supported by retail staff, contractors and our management team, in fact it has been a unifying experience for all of us in our stand against inappropriate and anti-social behaviour,” says Monica Jenkins, centre manager at Armada Dandenong Plaza. “This is an ever-evolving initiative and we encourage the whole community to embrace it.” For more information on Armada Dandenong Plaza’s Respect Protect Connect initiative visit: www.armadadandenongplaza.com.au

Lee Tarlamis.
Lee Tarlamis says his older brother’s cancer battle inspired him to spend his life helping those less fortunate. His service culminated in a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, announced on Monday 11 June. The Noble Park man and former state Upper House MP received the nod for service to the people and Parliament of Victoria “I’m extremely humbled. It’s not something that I’d expected,” he said. “I didn’t do it to get acknowledgement. “It was about wanting to provide assistance and help to people. “It’s a view that I formed very early on.” Mr Tarlamis said his brother fought cancer for two years before dying at age 17. “The trouble and the stress that the family went through, I saw how positive he was
throughout those two years,” he said. “It instilled in me that as tough as I think I have things, there are always people out there who are doing it a lot worse than me. “That’s why I got involved in the local community.” Initially that was through the Keysborough Learning Centre. “The centre loaned me a computer for me to do my school work,” he said.

“I wanted to repay the favour so I was volunteering time with them.” There he met then-politician Eddie Micallef and became his electorate officer. “That’s how I got into the politics world,” Mr Tarlamis said. “That opened up a lot of opportunities to provide assistance to community groups.” He never intended to run for parliament, but “one thing lead to another which lead to another” and he was a South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP from 2010 to 2014. “That was such an honour as well, when you consider the fact that very few people get to hold that position and represent that large number of people,” he said. Mr Tarlamis was a Springvale Benevolent Society volunteer from 2002 to 2012, a Noble Park Community Action Forum member for many years, a founding Springvale Multicultural Men’s Shed committee member, and more.
He’s now a senior advisor to Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings. The world of politics is not where he thought he’d end up. The Tarlamis family moved from Oakleigh to Keysborough when he was eight months old. He went to Wallarano Primary School in Noble Park and to Chandler Secondary College, where Keysborough College’s Acacia campus now stands. Mr Tarlamis went on to study an associate diploma of business. “I grew up working with dad in the family businesses,” he said. “I thought it would be logical that I would go into the business world and maybe into management or something like that. “I really enjoyed the community stuff. “Politics became that vehicle to do it.”

VLocity trains are on track By Danielle Kutchel
An artist's impression of the new rail bridge to remove the Greens Road level crossing in Dandenong South. Picture: LEVEL CROSSINGS REMOVAL PROJECT
Greens Road gone: crossing is all set By Danielle Kutchel Works to remove the remaining four level crossings and duplicate the track on the Cranbourne line are due to start next year, the State Government has said. Included in the works is the removal of the Greens Road level crossing in Dandenong South. Located in a commercial and industrial
area, the Greens Road level crossing will be removed by building a new rail bridge over the road, with detailed investigations confirming this as the most suitable design. Work will start in 2020 and the crossing will be gone by the end of 2022. Work will also start next year to construct eight kilometres of new track between Dandenong and Cranbourne, removing singletrack bottlenecks that prevent more services
from being run. These duplication works - including the rebuilding of Merinda Park Station - will be completed by 2023. Eleven level crossings have already been removed on the Cranbourne line, with further technical investigations and community consultation to come for crossings at Webster Street in Dandenong and Camms Road in Cranbourne.
A new batch of VLocity trains has been ordered to meet growing demand for regional rail services - and they'll be built right here in Dandenong. Bombardier will build the next six VLocity trains, supporting 100 direct jobs and hundreds more throughout the supply chain. The new trains are part of the $340 million in funding from the Victorian Budget 2019/20 to purchase up to 18 new three-carriage trains. The new VLocity trains will include the latest technology including accessibility improvements and mobile phone signal boosting technology. Bombardier is expected to begin building the new trains next year, before they are delivered to the network in 2021.
Bombardier in Dandenong will build the next six VLine VLocity trains.

Locks chopped for a cause By Danielle Kutchel While some people cut their hair with flair for fashion, Aminah decided to use her new 'do for a more worthy cause. The 10-year-old Dandenong North Primary School student underwent the chop at school on Friday 30 August, cutting off 26cm of hair to raise funds for her chosen charity, Cancer Council Victoria. The cut took place against a background of symbolic coloured balloons: yellow to represent hope, and green to represent a new beginning. About 65 percent of cancer patients who have chemotherapy treatment will experience hair loss, according to Aminah's fundraising website. At time of writing, she had raised more than $5000 for the charity. This means Aminah is ranked sixth amongst the top individual fundraisers for Cancer Council Victoria's 'I Will for Cancer' campaign, which encouraged fund-

raisers to go wild with their hair to raise money for the cause. According to her parents, Meliha Colakoglu and Bilal Haneef, Aminah chose to raise funds for Cancer Council Victoria because many people are suffering and are affected by this deadly disease. By raising awareness, she aims to send a message to people affected by cancer, that people do care and are willing to take the extra step to show that they do. Aminah hopes the funds she has raised will help the Cancer Council to achieve their mission of preventing cancer, empowering patients and saving lives - and even one day finding a cure for cancer. "We are very proud of our daughter Aminah's dedication and commitment to this special cause and her contribution to the creation of hope," her parents said. Aminah is still accepting donations via her website, shave.everydayhero.com/au/chopthe-locks-with-aminah.

Your new Holden next year will be a safer car, as a result of General Motors Holden's forward thinking. The company has just opened a new safety design test centre at its Lang Lang test track. Built at a cost of more than $750,000 the centre will enable GMH engineers to find out what happens to a car when it crashed and, more importantly, what happens to the occupants. Managing Director of GMH, Mr Alex Rhea, said the automotive industry is anxious to work closely with the community authorities to improve the traffic situation. A trusted part of Springvale’s community now and into the future. One of Springvale’s longest running and most loved aged care homes, Japara’s Kingston Gardens, has undergone a significant redevelopment to enable it to continue providing quality care to the community for decades to come. The stunning new development includes a refurbishment of the existing areas of the home, as well as the addition of a brandnew extension that will cater for the care needs of an additional 68 residents. The two-stage project commenced construction in 2017. Stage one was completed in September 2018 and saw the creation of the home’s newest building, which features stunning modern amenities including a nail and hair salon, spacious activity room, theatre room, alfresco dining space and a modern café. The café is run in partnership with Wallara, a not-for-profit organisation supporting people living with a disability. Wallara provides training and employment
opportunities for their clients, while creating a lively hub and gathering place for Japara residents, families, staff, and the wider community. Stage two of the project was completed in August and involved the refurbishment of the existing building, which saw new flooring and fixtures installed in the individual rooms and common areas, in addition to the remodelling of the surrounding courtyards. With both stages now finalised, a ‘small house’ dining model has been introduced across Kingston Gardens, where groups of residents (up to 30) are able to live close to their own dining and living areas. The thoughtfully curated meals are also served in front of residents, allowing them even more dining options. The significant changes at the home are not just cosmetic, however. As part of Japara’s commitment to dementia care, the redevelopment has seen the introduction of a specialised, secure environment for residents living with dementia. In line with Japara’s vision of ‘enriching every life we touch’, this area will be

Budding scientists from Lyndale Secondary College were among 60 year 10 and 11 students from across regional and rural Victoria to attend the fifth annual Biomedical Sciences Day in Parkville recently. Local students Fatima, Sena, Gayani, Saima and their teacher Anna Watts had a rare opportunity to experience life as a biomedical scientist at the event presented by the University of Melbourne's School of Biomedical Sciences, and the Gene Technology Access Centre (GTAC). Professor Matthew Watt, head of the University's Department of Physiology, encouraged the students to think about the science behind what creates, sustains and threatens people's lives in Australia - and beyond. He shared his journey to biomedical academia including his laboratory's groundbreaking research into the pathogenesis of fatty liver disease and diabetes. Professor Watt discussed some of the revolutionary work underway at the School and GTAC including how and why researchers now have a better understanding of human health; 3D printing to replace bones; new tools for cancer treatments; and new vaccines to combat disease. Students worked alongside researchers in the GTAC laboratories to photograph specimens using light, fluorescence and scanning electron microscopes. They have entered their images into the University's Under the Microscope competition. A behind-the-scenes look at the University's Harry Brookes Allen Museum of Anatomy and Pathology uncovered real tissue specimens and historical anatomical models, while
Lyndale students took a tour of the Virtual Reality Learning Studio. a tour of the Virtual Reality Learning Studio let students experience how cutting-edge digital technology is used to study the human body. The students from Lyndale were truly amazed by the immersive experience of the learning studio and the realism of the virtual human heart; as one student described, "it felt like I was holding a heart and pulling it out of an actual human body". Anna Watts, who teaches at Lyndale, said: "It was really helpful to learn about Access Melbourne and the options available to students who may be looking to attend university from a regional area or diverse background." Current University students, Georgia Carney who is studying a Bachelor of Biomedicine, Philip Lee who is studying a Bachelor of Biomedicine, Honours and Jasraaj Singh, a Doctor of Medicine student, also spoke about their courses, the diverse research topics they are pursuing and life on campus. The Lyndale students also learned about Access Melbourne, a program that helps students from rural or regional areas gain entry to undergraduate courses at the University. Each year, 20 percent of domestic undergraduate places are reserved for Access Melbourne applicants.

The two-week celebration will be held throughout the school holidays from September 21 to 6 October. This includes the deckchair movie sessions which will be held in Harmony Square at 12pm each weekday of the school holidays, except the Grand Final Day public holiday. In addition to the movies some of the key activities on offer during the festival include making your own flying saucer pizza, a tree planting session under the stars and a make your own spaceship art and craft activity. This year visitors to the Little Day Out will travel to a world filled with stars, planets and solar systems thanks to a pop-up planetarium. Greater Dandenong Mayor Cr Roz Blades said the festival was one of the biggest on the Greater Dandenong calendar, attracting more than 20,000 people each year. “This is a festival filled with fun and adventure,” Cr Blades said. “Strap yourself in and prepare for blast off. Season over for the Rays With the Dandenong Stingrays bowing out of the NAB League finals on Sunday 1 September, TYLER LEWIS takes a look back at the season that was, including what to expect come AFL Draft time. From afar, the Dandenong Stingrays' season looks like a slope from Round 7. But in reality, the year was incredible in terms of the development of every individual, and with injuries mounting from the beginning of the national carnival, the performances in the last few matches were particularly strong given the circumstances. The Rays won their first seven matches (barring a draw in Round 3) before dropping their next eight. Following a heartbreaking loss to ladderleaders Eastern - where the Stingrays converted more goals than the Ranges yet lost the match - Dandenong coach Nick Cox believed his side was playing brilliant footy and was the team no one would want to play in the finals. As warned, the Rays knocked off the Murray Bushrangers in week one of the finals. Coming into an elimination final against the Calder Cannons, the remaining NAB League sides watched on, likely hoping the Cannons could knock out the Rays, due to the depth of talent that floods the list, and its potential to achieve anything. And all but 25 minutes stood in the way of the Stingrays playing in a semi-final on the weekend but a blistering final term by the Cannons edged out Nick Cox's men. DRAFT TIME The NAB AFL Draft is approaching and there will no doubt be many Stingrays who deservedly make their way onto an AFL list. Some are expected to make their way into the AFL system, and some are bolting home with impressive performances late in the season. Hayden Young Young is simply built for the big stage. The elegant left-footer would slot into any AFL club and will most likely feature in their Round 1 selected 22. Coach Nick Cox moved the Stingrays captain around the ground at times during the year, proving he is a worthy midfielder and half-forward. But he has made a name for himself driving the ball out of defence with an unbelievable kick. Cody Weightman The Haileybury captain missed a lot of NAB League footy due to school commitments with the Bloods, but he definitely wasn't forgotten. There aren't many more dangerous around goal in this year's draft. Weightman is hard to envision on a particular AFL club's list because he would slot into every one of them with ease. He may not rack up huge numbers of the footy but will certainly have team-lifting moments and be a regular in goal of the year nominations. Ned Cahill Along with his goal sense, hunger and match winning ability, Cahill is one of the smartest footballers in the draft. With the ability to go into the midfield, Cahill is crafty around goal and will often find space by outsmarting his opponents. When the game is in the balance, Cahill will often be swooping around the stoppages on the prowl to change the context of the match. Sam De Koning After growing well over 10 centimetres in the space of 12 months before his draft year, De Koning went from a smooth moving wingman to a key pillar in the blink of an eye. The younger brother of current Carlton big man Tom De Koning, Sam has the ability to go either end of the ground. After a telling national carnival where he floated across and through packs in defence at will, De Koning earned himself All-Australian and Team of the Year honours as a key defender. De Koning's determination was on show against Eastern during the year when the big man was being held all day until he was crunched in a contest in the third term. Lachlan Williams dandenong.starcommunity.com.au
Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS
Dandenong Stingray Hayden Young is expected to be selected early in the AFL Draft. 195934 Williams is willing to take the game on at any opportunity. The Rolls Royce floats on the grass with ball-in-hand and kicks it long, a classic metres gained player who uses it efficiently. He's also capable in the air and has caused problems when going forward. Prior to the nationals, he was a springy defender before Vic Country coach Leigh Brown found his spot in the open space on the wing. Bigoa Nyuon 'Biggie' is an electric utility that can be used at any position on the ground. The St Kilda Academy prospect was thrown into the ruck in the match against Eastern when Bailey Schmidt went down with a shoulder injury, and thrived. With a strong leap, Nyuon provides an option in the ruck but with incredible leg speed becomes a midfielder when the ball hits the turf. Blake Kuipers Kuipers is the kind of code jumper who appears in every draft, but - make no mistake - he was born to play footy. After joining the Stingrays following a very successful volleyball career, Kuipers has taken the game by storm. At 196 centimetres, the big man likes to keep the statisticians busy, often doing a bit of everything on game day. The Rosebud product has also been invited to the State Combine and will no doubt put on a show. Jai Nanscawen The 19-year-old prospect was unlucky not to get picked up last year. After being put out of the game through injury in 2019, Nanscawen earned a spot at Box Hill where he performed well. Upon his return to the NAB League, Nanscawen looked a class above, often running rampant on the outside and delivering the ball with style. Restricting his influence on a match is no
easy feat. When he gets the footy it often finds his teammate's chest in an instant. Jack Toner Toner featured in almost every match as the leading disposal winner, or in the best players. He's a bit of a 'Mr Consistency' who finds the footy at will and had recruiters flicking through their team sheets in the final match of the year thinking "who is this kid?" Matthew Lloyd saw the potential in Toner in his days at Haileybury, spending a lot of oneon-one time with the youngster. He may not get picked in the draft straight away, but is a rookie smokey with some searing form at the end of the season and won't be stopped if he misses out on the first try. Luca Goonan Goonan is another absolute bolter after some stirring form at the business end of the finals. He wins the footy with ease in the engine room, and he can find the footy in clumps in the beginning of matches to set the tone. He had a brilliant match against the Cannons in the elimination final loss where he was the only Stingray to reach the 30 disposal milestone in a match this year. KEEP AN EYE ON FOR 2020 Clayton Gay Gay is one of the more influential prospects of the 2020 draft. With a booming left-foot that can be used at either end of the ground, Gay will either rack up rebound 50s or have several shots on goal. Either way, he is finding the footy. He had a brilliant year as a bottom-ager in 2019. If he is to continue this form he will dive into high draft contention next year. Connor MacDonald Many would be terrified of a Doveton versus Pakenham senior debut at age 16, but not MacDonald. The youngster debuted for Doveton in senior footy and won the best afield medal before debuting again for the Stingrays only a
short time after. MacDonald was quiet at first for the Rays but when he kicked his first goal in Dandenong colours in the first final against Murray, it sparked the whole side as all 22 ran from all corners of the ground to rub his head. At only 16, the best of MacDonald is still to come and will no doubt feature prominently as a bottom ager in 2020. Patrick Gerden The big man filled the gap of lean ruck stocks at Dandenong exceptionally well in the final stages of the year. Already at 199 centimetres at only 16, Gerden is a strong competitor and has a bright future ahead. He's another who will have to wait until 2021 for his draft year, but if the improvement that was shown during his moments at Dandenong are any indication, the title of best ruckman in the 2021 draft is his to lose. Ashton Williamson The livewire goal-sneak knows exactly where the big sticks are. Another product from the Outer East, he is brilliant around goal and isn't shy of bagging out. Williamson's consistency can't be questioned and will cause many opposition coaches headaches next year when he pulls on the Stingrays' jumper more often. HONOUR BOARD NAB League Team of the Year: Hayden Young (half back), Sam De Koning (full back), and Cody Weightman (forward pocket) U18 All-Australian: Hayden Young (half back), Sam De Koning (full back), and Cody Weightman (interchange) National combine invitees: Hayden Young, Sam De Koning, Cody Weightman, Ned Cahill, and Lachlan Williams State combine invitees: Blake Kuipers and Bigoa Nyuon. Mid-year draft: Mitch Riordan

Glory for the Redbacks By Tyler Lewis The date of 8 September 2019 will go down in folklore for the Hampton Park Football Club not only as the date on which the Redbacks broke their 21-year senior premiership drought, but also when the reserves boys also claimed the ultimate prize only hours prior to that. The Redbacks were easily the best side all year in Southern Football League Division 3 and seemed to be on the path to redemption following the straight sets defeat last season in September, and a tough couple of years for the football club in general. Clayton skipper Jayden Gilmour put the first on the board for Clayton at the third minute mark of the opening term, before the Redbacks kept their opponents goal less for the remainder of the match, 9.11 (65) to 1.5 (11). Peter Dye booted another two, as did Cameron Williamson and Phill Nanfra, while Nathan Carver was named best-on-ground in a dominant finals performance. In Division 2, meanwhile, the Doveton Eagles continued their stirring finals form in the preliminary final against Murrumbeena, winning 12.14 (86) to 10.10 (70). After kicking only six behinds in the second, the Eagles bounced back to kick 12.8 from then on. Former high-flying Melbourne AFL forward Russell Robertson booted another four majors, while Nick Battle was best afield yet again for the Eagles. For Murrumbeena, Matthew Lello backed up his performance last game with another strong effort. The fired-up Eagles will now face off with Springvale Districts in the grand final with a full head of momentum. And in the Division 4 grand final, South Yarra caused an almighty boilover in the big dance to secure the premiership, defeating

maintained the flow in the second term, and although the Lightning pushed for a late surge, South Yarra held on for the 2019 silverware. Shaheen Merchant was instrumental for the Lions, while former SFL chief executive Dave Cannizzo booted his first two majors for
the year when they mattered most. It was a dark day for the Lyndhurst Football Club, going down in both senior and reserve grand finals, however it was an outstanding year nonetheless and the club will no doubt be a force to be reckoned with next season.
Sweet As birthday present for Pursell By Mick Floyd

Hampton Park celebrated a memorable senior premiership on the weekend.
Sweet As Emm showed her trademark turn of foot to give trainer Brendan Pursell a belated birthday present at Sandown Park on Thursday night. A day after celebrating his 48th birthday, Pursell watched on as Sweet As Emm took full advantage of Box 1 to record her 12th career victory and maintain her perfect record in the red vest. “She’s really at her top at the moment,” said Pursell. “She just needed that gap at the first turn to be close enough. Last week at Geelong she flew down the back straight after being last at the winning post the first turn, it’s just crazy.” Sweet As Emm stepped fairly from the inside draw before railing strongly to improve to third position entering the back straight. She loomed up ominously, passing the 595-metre boxes, and when leader Courting rolled off the rail turning for home, Sweet As Emm capitalised, powering to the line two-and-a-half
lengths clear in 29.36. Pursell now has multiple options for the versatile Sweet As Emm. Her winning time put her into 17th place in the 515-metre Speed Star standings, and she is also ninth on the 595-metre leaderboard for the match race series this Sunday. There’s also the prospect of contesting the Million Dollar Chase before again embarking on a staying campaign. “We’ve dropped her back over the 500 for a while, and hopefully with a bit more age she’ll get back over the trip, that’s the idea," Pursell explained. “But for now, I dunno yet. The Speed Star would be perfect for her - it’d be interesting to see what she can run with a clear run. I’ll have to speak to the owner.” The final round of Speed Star qualification trials was run on Sunday, with Spring Bridge finishing with the most impressive time. Nominations for the $190,000 series close at 10am on Wednesday.
