Oasis loses water By Danielle Kutchel

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS pool at Oasis. “We don’t want more stuff, we already have a 50 metre pool, we just want a new 50 here,” Ms Hong said. Greater Dandenong councillor Maria Sampey said a 25 metre pool at Oasis would be built “over my dead body”.
“This council will not be building a 25 metre pool while I’m alive,” she said. She said council would consider a 50 metre pool with a boom that would allow the pool to be utilised for different activities, including potentially swimming competitions. “We want to entice people to come to our

city,” she said. “I can’t see us building a 25 metre pool. We can’t go spending $65 million of ratepayers’ money and put in something less than what it was, that doesn’t make sense.” The proposal will be put to council on 23 September.

Users of Dandenong Oasis leisure centre are urging the council to scrap plans to replace the current 50 metre with a 25 metre pool, as per a plan to revamp the ageing centre. The City of Greater Dandenong’s draft aquatic strategy includes plans to change the layout of Oasis to add a 25 metre, 10 lane lap pool. But users of the centre say this would not meet swimmers’ needs. Spearheaded by Jessica Hong, the group has put together a petition signed by more than 760 people, which was presented to council last month. Ms Hong told the Journal that the group was disappointed in the council’s consultation process, which they feel has been inadequate. A document relating to the proposal was printed only in English, potentially locking out residents for whom English is a second language, Ms Hong said. Ms Hong and others from the group allege that they have been told by council officers involved in the project that the proposed design would lessen the centre’s carbon footprint as it would take less power to heat the pool, and that they should use Noble Park Aquatic Centre’s 50 metre outdoor pool instead. But the protestors say this is an inadequate solution that would contribute to already heavy congestion in Noble Park, and would inconvenience Oasis patrons who travel from as far away as Knox and Gembrook to use the centre. They also pointed to the future growth of the region, emphasising that with more families moving into the area, a larger pool would be an asset to the community. The council had floated the idea of enclosing the pool at NPAC, at a cost of $12 million compared to $8 million to revamp the existing

IN BRIEF Armed robbers prey on eatery
Violence of youth By Cam Lucadou-Wells Two members of a “violent youth gang” God’s Army 23 have been bailed by a children’s court after an alleged brutal robbery of a train passenger in Noble Park. A 15-year-old boy and another minor appeared in the court soon after their arrest on 10 September. They and another co-offender had robbed a commuter who boarded a city-bound train at Yarraman station about 4pm on 15 August, police alleged. The 15-year-old accused threatened the victim after asking the victim for ‘smokes’. “Don’t lie or I’ll stab you,” the youth allegedly told the victim as he rifled through the victim’s pockets. As the victim resisted, the accused punched him in the jaw, police told the court. The group stole the victim’s phone, wallet and cards, $800 and a black bag with up to three bottles of Corona beers, it was alleged. Police opposed bail, saying the victim was too afraid to use public transport unless the offenders were imprisoned.
“I’m thinking how I’d feel if he approached me with a knife and demanded my property,” a police prosecutor said. He added that the 15-year-old was a risk to other train passengers, who were often “young and vulnerable”. The youth was also on police bail at the time over an alleged group robbery and assault of three victims in Southland shopping centre underground carpark on 11 July. The other minor was allegedly involved in a violent group robbery of a 50-year-old man in central Springvale in July. He is also charged over two gang robberies of two victims at Cranbourne railway station and another two victims at Casey Central shopping centre in the same month. The pair was bailed by a children’s court on 4 September over allegedly spraying tags ‘GA23’ on a City of Greater Dandenong building and a car in Kingsbury Lane, Dandenong on 3 September. The tags related to the gang God’s Army 23, a police Embona Taskforce member told the court. The offending was described by police as
a “series of violent robberies as part of a violent youth gang”. The pair would continue to commit similar crimes if released, the Embona member argued. On 10 September, the children’s court magistrate bailed the pair, noting their young age, Youth Justice supports and that the alleged robbery pre-dated their previous court bail. Both boys had no prior history, had complied with bail conditions for the past week and had not committed subsequent violent offending, the judge said. They were taking part in the same at-risk youth pre-apprenticeship course, the court heard. It was noted that the 15-year-old would be offered treatment under a Youth Justice bail support program. As part of their continued bail, the boys were ordered not to associate with each other and co-offenders, nor to loiter in company at train stations. They were placed on a night curfew. They were bailed to appear at a children’s court at a later date.
A pair of masked robbers wielding a silver axe has held up three workers at a Sri Lankan and Indian food outlet in Dandenong. The would-be armed robbers wore masks, hoodies and gloves as they entered the front door of the Cleeland Street eatery about 11pm on Friday 6 September. One of them produced the axe and ran behind the counter, causing two workers to flee out the back of the building. The offender discovered the till had already been emptied, and left out the front door. On their way from the scene, the axe-wielding robber then approached the store’s owner parked in a van outside. Using the axe, the offender repeatedly smashed the bonnet and then the driver’s side of the front windscreen. The van’s occupant escaped injury. The pair fled in a white Nissan SUV. Four arrested in police raid Four people have been charged over drugs, stolen number plates and outstanding warrants in Dandenong North as part of a police home raid. Frontline Tactical Unit police arrested the group after observing two vehicles arriving at a Coleman Court property about 2am on Wednesday 11 September. They seized nine sets of allegedly stolen plates, including from one of the vehicles. A 33-year-old Dandenong North man was arrested and questioned by police in relation to the number plates. A 41-year-old Noble Park man was charged with possessing about 15 grams of methamphetamine seized from the other vehicle. He was also charged with possessing a prescription drug. He was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 8 November. A 26-year-old woman of no fixed address was arrested on outstanding warrants and remanded in custody. A 20-year-old Pakenham man was arrested on an outstanding warrant and bailed to appear at Latrobe Valley Magistrates Court on 26 November. Police say the arrests are part of Operation Tidal in the Casey, Greater Dandenong and Cardinia Police Service Areas.

Holidays on the wild side for the kids City of Casey’s teen school holiday program offers animal experiences and plenty of other activities on the wild side. Starting 23 September, the low cost fun includes roller skating, splatball, circus, a suspended-indoor climb, diet cooking, cinema and a trip to Myuna Farm in Doveton. Free, supervised transport is also available. Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon said the
“maximum fun factor” program “ticks all the boxes”. “The young people make new friends, it’s inexpensive, safe and just plain fun for the kids.” Casey Youth Services’ team provide a safe, respectful space for young people who make friends less easily than others, Cr Stapledon said.

Indulging in the flavour EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL By Danielle Kutchel The moment you step through the door of Pacific Gourmet, you can feel your mouth watering. There's something about the delicious aroma of spices, the sight of succulent meats and vegetables and the brightly coloured decor that speaks of the culinary delights to come. Bland is not something the new Fijian-Indian restaurant does. Don't come here expecting your usual rogan josh and butter chicken; Fijian-Indian is a different style of cuisine, using a house-made masala typical to that style. The curries are similar to a south Indian style and the flavours are milder to the spices used in Sri Lankan and Indian cooking. Menu specials from time to time make the most of the owner's Fijian heritage, incorporating traditional root vegetables like taro and cassava. Restaurant manager Bineel said Pacific Gourmet is a real family affair: his mum Sushil and sister Sanjleen run the front of house, with Sushil taking care of all of the cooking, infusing it with a mother's knowledge, practise and love. On weekends the whole family is there, including dad Bal and brother Samuel. Bineel manages the restaurant itself, including the back end and providing training. He says Pacific Gourmet is a dream come true for his mother. Originally an aged care worker, she had provided catering for parties and functions on the side and found that people loved her cooking.

Sushil cooks the flavourful dishes at Pacific Gourmet. 197550 Bineel also owns a coffee shop a few blocks over from Pacific Gourmet; one day, his mother came to him and said she wanted out of aged care and suggested giving a restaurant a go. In Bineel's words they "took the plunge", and he is proud to say his mother now works at something she enjoys. The restaurant is currently open Monday to Saturday, from 10.00am until 4.00pm to take advantage of lunchtime crowds. Bineel says the location was carefully chosen to be central to all major offices in Dandenong so that work-

ers don't have to waste their short lunchbreaks on travel. Lunchtime deals offer value, keeping a low cost point with massive helpings of curries, roti and a drink. "I've made it accessible for consumers to come in and try the cuisine. Dandenong is very multicultural and ... some of our food can be similar to the food that they eat, while others have tried it for the first time and they want to comeback because they like the flavours." Speaking of flavours: there's no skimping here. There's a sweetness, a spiciness and a
richness when the food hits your tongue. The silver beet and coconut side was a particular favourite along with the tangy dahl and lamb so well cooked it can't wait to fall apart in your mouth. You can tell it's been home-cooked it's like a warm hug for your tastebuds. Bineel says customer feedback so far says the family is on to a good thing. "Customers are saying the service is great and food is fresh and tasty. Overall what we've created is ... good food at a good price, and it's always fresh here."

Noble Park finance audit By Cam Lucadou-Wells Noble Park Community Centre's manager Brian Woodman has been temporarily stood down while the centre undergoes an independent financial audit. Mr Woodman, who declined to comment, is the subject of an "internal investigation" at the centre which receives funding from the Department of Health and Human Services, Neighbourhood Houses Victoria and Greater Dandenong Council. The centre's Committee of Management - an elected body that oversees the centre "instigated" the investigation and appointed an independent auditor to review its financial
records, according to the DHHS. "The Community Centre's Committee of Management have advised that they are conducting an internal investigation to respond to issues that have been brought to their attention," a Department spokesperson said. "We are liaising closely with the Committee of Management as the investigation proceeds, and working to ensure neighbourhood house programs and activities continue to be available for the local community." The centre's committee president Silvester Hipik declined to comment. Greater Dandenong councillor Maria Sampey said the investigation was best handled
by the DHHS or an independent body, rather than the centre's committee. Further, community centres were also better run by the council itself, such as the Jan Wilson Community Centre in Noble Park, she said. "These are big government organisations fobbing off their responsibilities to volunteer Committees of Management. "They set up these committees of people who haven't been trained up and don't know what their responsibilities are. "They haven't done a director's course. They are running a company but they are just lay people volunteering to help."
The centre has been the long-time home of an annual community art show, a community garden and a meeting point for scores of ethnic, sports, hobby and seniors groups in Memorial Drive. It receives funding from the DHHS through a Neighbourhood House service agreement. The funds support community development programs and activities at the centre. City of Greater Dandenong provides funds to the centre to run programs and manage the council-owned facility. A council spokesperson said the DHHS and Neighbourhood Houses Victoria were best placed to speak on the matter.
Student tech-sperts look to the future of robotics By Taylah Eastwell In the age of self-serve checkouts and cars that park themselves, familiarity with robotics can inevitably lead to a cutting-edge career in the 21st century workforce. At Lyndale Secondary College a successful robotics and drone program has been offered as an extra-curricular activity for students for several years. Over 50 students devote their lunchtime to learning about virtual robotics, coding, creating wearable technologies, building solar cars, using 3D printers and coding drones to complete autonomous missions. Students are midway through designing, building and testing robots to compete in numerous competitions, including the VEX IQ Squared Away challenge in October. The VEX IQ competition requires two robots to compete collaboratively in the Teamwork Challenge to score points. The school also boasts its first all-girl team
entering the first Lego League Tournament in November, which requires a robot to be built that can navigate, capture and transport objects autonomously. Year 8 students are also busy studying technology and its application to multi-disciplinary areas before competing in the GoIT Challenge, which requires them to answer a series of quizzes and identify and solve a community problem through the use of technology. These students will have the chance to establish leadership skills by becoming engineering technology leaders who will mentor younger students in 2020. The school hopes program numbers will continue to grow in 2020 when it expands to include opportunities to build drones and compete in solar car challenges. 50 year old trees dying Trees which have lined the entrance to Dandenong for 50 years are slowly dying. The Mahogany gums are all that is left of a WW1 memorial in Lonsdale St, between the bridge and Frankston Rd. The trees were the centre of a controversy in 1960 when the Country Roads Board uprooted half of them to widen Lonsdale St. Asked if the work there by the roads board was connected with the trees dying, the City Engineer, Mr Gordon Wright said: "I am not going to answer that I still have to work with the CRB". Mr Wright said not even a tree surgeon would save the gums. They will last another 10 to 12 years. Mr Wright said Dandenong Council will plant other trees after the Mahogany gums have been removed. At Dandenong Council on Monday night Cr E Hill asked Mr Wright if it was possi-

Men urged: get checked By Danielle Kutchel Each year, approximately 3500 Australian men die of prostate cancer. It's estimated to be the second most common cause of death from cancer in Australian men, and more men die of prostate cancer than women die of breast cancer. But if it is diagnosed early, the chances of curing the disease are higher. September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and men at risk of developing the disease are being urged to get tested. Men over the age of 50, or 40 with a family history of prostate cancer, should speak to their GP about their prostate health. tory, diet and lifestyle can play a role. Many men feel uncomfortable about getting a "finger exam" done if they voice any concerns to the doctor - but the digital rectal examination (DRE) is no longer recommended as the first test for prostate cancer. Instead, it's likely that doctors will ask patients to undergo a simple blood test known as the PSA test, which checks whether there is an increase in the prostate specific antigen (PSA). If PSA is found to be elevated, your GP will recommend other tests to confirm a diagnosis of prostate cancer such as a biopsy and a Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It's important to remember that elevated PSA can indicate other prostate problems and doesn't necessarily mean cancer is present. There are also 29 different types of prostate

Deng Shok, in a hooded jumper with a towel covering his face, ran inside a 7-11 servo and pointed an imitation handgun at the attendant about 1.20pm. Several customers who were in line, as well as others in the shop, screamed and fled as Deng Shok threatened to shoot the worker. He stole $600 from the till, and escaped in a stolen Mercedes Benz. Witnesses described the gun as "very realistic", akin to a police-issue handgun. "I have little doubt that they believed the
gun was real and were terrified as a result," County Court of Victoria judge Meryl Sexton said in sentencing on 9 September. Ten minutes after the hold-up, police with activated lights and sirens pursued the unlicensed driver. He sped away up to about 95 km/h in a 60 km/h zone, crashing into two idling cars at a red light as he tried to drive between them. The Mercedes continued through the red light despite losing a front wheel during the crash. Police stopped to assist occupants in the struck cars. Deng Shok abandoned the car, losing one of his sandals as he ran through a retirement village. In a "very calm" manner, he identified himself when approached by police at a nearby bus stop. He was then allowed to board the bus and escaped until his arrest three days later. The cash had not been recovered, the court heard.
Earlier that morning, Deng Shok left behind a thong during an attempted aggravated burglary at Prince Mark Hotel in Doveton. About 6.44am, Deng Shok knocked at the door of a unit then produced a gun and tried to force his way inside. As two male occupants struggled to shut the door, he threatened to put a bullet in the head within five seconds. Deng Shok counted down. The "terrified" residents sheltered in the bathroom and dialled triple-0. He drove away in the Mercedes, in which he stole petrol from two servos in Lynbrook and Narre Warren South later that day. After his arrest, Deng Shok initially denied any involvement. He later said he had been after bond money in a search for somewhere to live. Judge Sexton noted Deng Shok's "significant and relevant" criminal history despite his young age, as well as him being on bail
at the time. The Sudanese refugee however also had a background of "trauma, disadvantage and dislocation". His diagnosed PTSD stemmed from exposure to wartime carnage as a child in his homeland. His teenage years were blighted by homelessness, binge drinking, self-harm and drug abuse. Judge Sexton sentenced Deng Shok to jail with a "longer" parole period to promote his "guarded" rehabilitation prospects. He needed to remain drug-free, as well as engage in mental health treatment to reduce his reoffending risk, she said. Deng Shok was jailed for up to six years, eight months. He will be eligible for parole after three years, nine months - including his 582 days in pre-sentence remand. He was disqualified from driving for 18 months.
Beloved playground 25th draws mayor back from leave By Cam Lucadou-Wells The community-built timber adventure playground in Burden Park has drawn high praise from Greater Dandenong mayor-on-leave Roz Blades. Cr Blades, who has been on a leave-of-absence as Mayor for the past six weeks, was there for a 25th anniversary celebration of the Springvale South landmark on Sunday 8 September. "It was huge. It is a monument to the community of Springvale." She praised the turn-out of 1200 volunteers who toiled over four days to build the playground, supported by the then-City of Springvale.
Cr Blades was also Springvale's mayor at the time and part of the community effort. She recalls bikies on the tools, chefs from the Waltzing Matilda Hotel bringing soup and residents bearing plates of sandwiches. "I have never heard of anywhere where 1200 volunteers doing something like this. "It was not a company of builders, it was done by the little people, the ordinary people who came out and built a playground. "That playground is a tribute to the spirit of a community." A community committee fundraised $120,000 for the project. It included $50,000 raised by the City of Springvale, Cr Blades said.
It was all done in a time before emails. For two years, the community orgainsed donations, tools and helpers through letters and phone calls, Cr Blades said. The playground is now under the auspices of the City of Greater Dandenong - formed from the amalgamation the cities of Springvale and Dandenong, Cr Blades said. Cr Blades' leave of absence has been extended to include this month's two council meetings on 10 and 24 September. She told the Journal that it was "just some time off". "I've been working from home for two months. Everything is fine."

NEWS
The Glade ‘under threat’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong Council has approved three double-storey townhouses in a "unique" narrow cul-de-sac in Dandenong despite congestion concerns. Six neighbours objected to the proposal for 1 The Glade, a quiet neighbourhood of large land blocks that borders the Dandenong Creek reserve. Among their concerns were noise, parking and traffic congestion, including a glut of cars parked on the scenic grove's nature strips. Council planning officers however recom-
mended that the proposal on a sizeable 797 square-metre block met Res Code requirements including for traffic and parking. Councillors duly approved the plan at a meeting on 10 September. At the meeting's public question time, residents called for No Standing signs, a ban on parking on nature strips and to reclassify the street as a "path". Councillor Matthew Kirwan said there was a concern about the "collective impact" of townhouse developments upon The Glade's "unique nature". He said individual townhouse applications
may meet council requirements but "the collective impact is the concern". Cr Kirwan asked at the meeting whether the area could be rezoned or protected by a parking overlay. City planning director Jody Bosman said the carriageway was about 750 millimetres narrower than similar reservations. But there was no "strategic justification" for changing the neighbourhood's General Residential Zone 1, he said. "To start applying overlays on a patchwork basis ... in any municipality is not seen as a really good form of planning."
The council planner's report stated the development would respect the "preferred neighbourhood character" - which already comprises some townhouses. "The proposal is of a high quality urban design, with physical recession, articulation, varied use of materials, textures and other visual interest," the report stated. "The overall layout allows space for acceptable landscaping treatments such as a significant canopy tree and shrubbery plantings." A council engineering director told the meeting the council would review the need for parking restrictions in the area.
Wheel good turn for kids By Danielle Kutchel A hidden love for pushing pedals has blossomed into a series of charity challenges for Ian Kilgour. The Endeavour Hills local was encouraged by his sister in law to take up cycling after having five heart bypasses in 2007. His recovery ignited a passion for cycling that has endured through the years as he has racked up the kilometres. Eight years ago he decided to channel that passion into charity and entered the Around the Bay cycling event, raising funds for The Smith Family. On Sunday 6 October he’ll join more than 10,000 other cyclists from around the country in Around the Bay 2019. This year, Mr Kilgour will complete the 100km Sorrento to Melbourne route. “I do it for the challenge, the enjoyment and the satisfaction of helping kids,” he said. The Smith Family provides learning support and mentoring programs for Australian
children, combatting the disadvantage that can limit their opportunities and outcomes in life. “Every dollar raised by riders will help us reach even more young people in need with practical support for their education, including school books, uniforms and shoes, and access to out-of-school learning and mentoring programs to support their literacy, numeracy and future aspirations,” said Anton Leschen, The Smith Family’s general manager in Victoria. Mr Kilgour is feeling well prepared for his eighth outing at the event and gets out on his wheels regularly, normally riding 65km on a Saturday morning along the Eastlink trail. He has set a fundraising target of $3000 and is so far well on his way to achieving that goal thanks to the generosity of donors and his workplace, Facey. Mr Kilgour is still accepting donations via his fundraising page at https://www. aroundthebayfundraising.com.au/fundraisers/iankilgour/around-the-bay.

Burglar targets aged-care A drug-addicted burglar says he has no memory of stealing a bottle of perfume and a bank card from a nursing home’s residential unit in Dandenong. Andrew Daniel Schulberg and a co-accused were believed to have followed a staff member into the nursing home about 2.15am on 9 May, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard. Later that day, more than $170 was spent on the stolen bank card at a milk bar, two supermarkets and a KFC outlet in Dandenong. Schulberg was arrested, in possession of a kitchen knife and methamphetamine, after reportedly harassing customers in Dandenong
Plaza on 7 June. Police didn’t interview him at the time due to his apparently drug-affected state. Schulberg had the knife due to being at a barbecue at the time, a defence lawyer told the court. He later said he couldn’t remember the aged care burglary due to his drug addled state, the court heard. Schulberg also pleaded guilty to possessing three folding knives, breaching bail, skipping court, drug possession and resisting two police officers. At the time of his offences, he was on a community corrections order for trafficking 900 diazepam tablets and handling stolen goods in 2015.
Hearing checks are popular By Taylah Eastwell Children and their parents have heard about the importance of ear check-ups after the Rotary Club of Noble Park and Keysborough provided a free hearing test service at the Springvale Service for Children Centre. With the help of eight audiology and speech therapy students from the University of Melbourne, on Saturday 24 August 38 children aged between four and six had their hearing tested. While 23 children had perfect hearing, 38 percent required follow up treatment. This is far higher than the usual 10 percent of children requiring retesting or further treatment. The Rotary Club of Noble Park and Keysborough’s youth services director, Reny Frighetto, said that the outcome highlighted the importance of the Rotary-provided service as a valuable resource to identify hearing
Defence lawyer Siva Kandasamy, in seeking a further CCO sentence, told the court on 10 September that Schulberg had a 15-year drug problem with heroin and cannabis. He’d been clean for 18 months before a relapse. In July 2018, he’d failed to show up for a medical detox during a CCO, the court heard. Schulberg was also diagnosed with ADHD, bipolar disorder, anxiety and depression. “If his drug issue is addressed, he’s a good prospect of rehabilitating,” Mr Kandasamy said. Magistrate Sharon McRae noted that it was the fourth time that Schulberg had breached a CCO. “The court is giving him years to have a go at this CCO ... and each time he doesn’t com-
plete what he has to do. “He’s been given opportunity after opportunity to do it again and he hasn’t turned up.” Schulberg was jailed for 30 days - which had been already served in pre-sentence detention. He was placed on an 18-month CCO including a six-month night curfew, drug treatment, supervision, judicial monitoring and 67 hours of unpaid work - which was remaining from his previous order. “You need to completely change your attitude with your compliance with the Office of Corrections, otherwise it will come back to me and I’ll put you in jail,” Ms McRae said. “This is your last chance.”

Global player makes moves There are not many family businesses that can boast a history over 125 years but that is the story behind a business which was established in Noble Park in 2019. The family-owned Schmitz Cargobull, the European market leader in refrigerated trailers, with an annual turnover of over $4 billion, was founded by Heinrich Schmitz in Germany in 1892. Now owned by three families, the company has over 6,400 employees and this year confirmed its decision to invest heavily in its Australian operation with the move into the purpose designed office and production premises in Noble Park. The new premises will provide the facilities to import fully built refrigerated semitrailers, produce and assemble trailer configurations such as 12 and 22 pallets as B-Double combinations as well as being able to carry and dispatch spare parts all over Australia and to provide direct after sales support for our
customers, all from the one location. Chairman of Schmitz Cargobull, Andreas Schmitz, will visit Australia to officially open the new premises in October. The official opening will feature an Oktoberfest theme in line with the German heritage of the company and will include entertainment for children as Schmitz Cargobull host a family afternoon in line with its values as a family business. After ten years with the company, Balint Kolnhofer, moved to Australia in January to take over the role as Managing Director of Schmitz Cargobull Australia. "We are a family business and to have the chairman of the company visit Melbourne to officially open our new premises shows the commitment the organisation is making in Australia and reaffirms the important family values which are promoted throughout our company," said Mr Kolnhofer.

The slime is just sublime Kids just love getting their hands into soft, gooey slime. How to make slime was one of the top searched phrases on Google last year. The school holidays are a great time to let kids get creative and messy. This recipe is a traditional slime that uses both Borax and glue, which can be found in most local supermarkets. It makes a nice thick slime perfect for poking, squishing, squelching and rolling; the same consistency many parents will remember buying from the toy shop many years ago.
After the kids have finished playing with it, pop the slime went into a Tupperware container or other air-tight container in the pantry. For extra special slime, add two tablespoons of glow in the dark paint to the mixture.
Ingredients -Borax, a bottle of clear PVA school glue, a glitter glue pen for colour and warm water.
Step One: Dissolve one teaspoon of Borax in one cup of warm water.
Step Two: Empty the entire glue bottle in to a separate, larger bowl. Refill the bottle with warm water from the tap and add the water to the bowl.
Step Three: Add colour by emptying a pink glitter glue pen in to the glue/warm water mix. Mix well.

FOCUS ON ‌ MEDICALLY SPEAKING
Inside view of dementia By Danielle Kutchel Dementia is an illness that affects over 447,000 Australians, and is the single leading cause of disability in Australians aged 65 and over. Dementia has a profound life-changing impact for the person living with the illness and also their family, carers, and friends. So what exactly is dementia? Many aren't aware that dementia is an umbrella term that describes a unique combination of symptoms: loss of memory, intellect, rationality, social skills and physical functioning. All types of dementia typically have these symptoms in common, however each type of dementia affects sufferers differently and can vary in severity. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia, affecting around 70% of sufferers. While some treatments are available to help reduce the severity of some symptoms, there is currently no treatment available that slows, stops or cures dementia. Dementia can be incredibly debilitating for the sufferer, and also expensive to manage. In 2018, Australia spent $15 billion to manage it and over 1.5 million people are involved in caring for sufferers including health care practitioners and family carers. Dementia sufferers also account for 52% of all residents in aged care facilities. It's most common in people over 65, however it can affect people at any age.

Artists find their ‘home’ Six artists ponder the theme of 'home' in the return of City of Greater Dandenong's national exhibition of refugee and asylum seeker works. A striking ink and gold on paper work by Dandenong artist Zakiria Tahirian is among the exhibits in the annual HOME exhibition at Walker Street Gallery. Other works include a sculpture by mother and daughter Saba Hakim and Zahra Ali, illustrations by Baaqiy Ghazali, paintings by Salah Murad and paintings, sculpture and photographs by Sha Sarwari. Each of the selected artists, with cultural backgrounds of Hazara Afghani, Iraqi, Kurdish, Iranian and Malaysian, were awarded $1000. Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades said the exhibition, like the municipality, celebrated diversity. "Since 2016 HOME has proudly supported
artists from asylum seeker and refugee backgrounds, in recognition of the enormous contribution they make to our community here in Greater Dandenong and to our culture as a nation. "We are very pleased to welcome back Zakiria Tahirian and Sha Sarwari whose artistic careers have continued to progress since they first exhibited in HOME." IKEA Springvale will host a free in-store event on Sunday 13 October from 11am to 2pm. The selected artists will be present, as well as their artworks and the stories behind them. Talks and workshops will be hosted.. HOME will be launched at Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre, cnr Walker and Robinson streets, Dandenong on Saturday 5 October 2-4pm. It runs until 2 November. Show fun for low budgets keeps the crowds coming By Cam Lucadou-Wells The Doveton Show experience still offers families a low-cost but high-fun alternative to the Royal Melbourne Show these Spring school holidays. For the past 15 years, about 20,000 people flock to Myuna Farm to enjoy the mix of farm animals, showbags, rides, foods and performances for the cost of a gold-coin entry. Its committee of committed volunteers, from teens to seniors across a range of cultural backgrounds, prepare for six months. Many more join in to help on the big day. The committee recently took out the Volunteer Group category at the City of Casey Volundandenong.starcommunity.com.au
Muyna Farm staff Kelly Cairns and Daniel van der Horst with a cross-bred lamb at last year's Picture: ROB CAREW Doveton Show. 185513 teer Awards 2019. "It's a very hard-working team, a real team effort," chairperson Veronica Hill said of the
24-strong show committee. "We're pretty proud of it. It's all about community involvement - we're a pretty good close-knit community. "Our purpose is as a low-cost alternative - a lot of people can't afford to go to Melbourne Show." The show also helps 15 community groups as a host for their fund-raising food stalls and sausage sizzles on the day. A variety of local groups run information stalls. Ms Hill said the show also aimed to minimise waste such as plastic bags. Volunteers also carry buckets to collect food waste for compost.
"We're trying to be as environmentally friendly as possible." It started with a State Government grant designed to boost disadvantaged areas such as Doveton, Ms Hill said. "The first year we had 3000 people and that got the wheels rolling. "When the funds ran out after a few years, we formed an incorporated body and took over as a committee. "It'll keep going as long as we get the volunteers. It takes a lot of people to run it." Doveton Show is on Sunday 22 September 10am-4pm at Myuna Farm, 182 Kidds Road Doveton; entry $1 or $5 for a family of six.

Dairy design dollop A cow-side mural depicting the "journey of milk from farm to plate" has earned Hallam Primary School a national award. Out of thousands of entrants, the painting on the large fibreglass cow dubbed Mrs Cowington III took out the best cow design award in the Dairy Australia schools comp Picasso Cows. The painting's story spans 230 years from the arrival of cows with the First Fleet. It then follows the journey of milk from a
dairy milking shed to a milk tanker then a processing plant, delivery truck and milk bar. The cow also depicts the range of dairy products including cheese, chocolate, milkshakes, cream, yoghurt and custard. Students have also made butter, ricotta cheese and ice cream at school. Prep teacher Louisa Carey says Mrs Cowington will be homed in the school's kitchen garden. Its $1000 prize money will be used for
new plants and equipment for the garden. Dairy Australia spokesperson Vanessa Forrest said the Picasso Cows program provided insight into the $13 billion Australian dairy industry. "With many children increasingly growing up in urban areas, they often don't know where their food comes from and Picasso Cows is a great opportunity to educate the next generation."
Tennis court bookings have gone online at Hallam Tennis Club. In a City of Casey first, the club has adopted Tennis Australia's 'Book a Court system' which includes a security gate code and automatic light sensors. Players book and pay for their session online. They then enter a gate PIN code to access the court with lights automatically turning on and off. Among its benefits is less burden for club administrators and greater flexibility and security for players. Hallam Tennis Club fully funded the $13,000 system through several grants. It is holding an open day to celebrate the new booking system on Saturday 21 September, 11am-3pm.
Youth street crime a focus By Mitchell Clarke

Almost 400 youth have been arrested in an operation targeting suburbs within the Cardinia, Casey and Greater Dandenong policing areas. Since April this year, the operation has seen 396 youth arrested with police executing 126 warrants of apprehension and handing out 278 traffic and 50 crime infringements. Superintendent Paul Hollowood from the South Metro Region said the operation was focused on addressing youth related offending across three major crime themes. The themes included robberies, public order offending and vehicle crime linked to serious offending. "We know crimes such as robberies and public order offending has been a concern to the community and Operation Tidal has been developed to specifically target these issues," Supt Hollowood said. Tidal is linked closely with the Southern Metro Crime Team's Operation Pendsend, a youth response team which is made up of detectives who monitor at-risk youths and develop disruption and enforcement strategies. "This is a strategic approach to sharing information to ensure we have an intelligenceled approach to our enforcement of youth offending in this area," Supt Hollowood said. Turning their attention to social media as a means to put an end to the youth violence, Commander Libby Murphy said officers were able to respond to perceived threats in the community through received intelligence. "We have our monitoring and assessment centre manage intelligence and they'll feed that back to us and we have strategic intelligence to suggest different groups are at play," Cmdr. Murphy said. "We monitor all sorts of social media, so we'll look at Instagram, Facebook, we'll look
at Snapchat and all those sorts of things, we use intelligence based policing to make sure we're targeting where and when we need the resources in that area." And while police wouldn't name a particular problem suburb, they said the rise in crime could be attributed to the growth of the southeastern suburbs. "Our area is an area that's fast expanding so it has a large proportion of youth, so I think that's probably part of our focus," Cmdr. Murphy said. "Youth are often disengaged and we know that we've got to connect with youth and not just have an enforcement approach. "But our enforcement approach is really important, particularly for that high harm offending where we actually have things like robberies and car jacking's and theft from motor cars or theft of motor cars which is then linked to other offending." Despite this, Victoria Police said youth crime wasn't directly related to gang activity. "We do know there are some gangs we target but I wouldn't say the majority of the offending is gang related, most of it is opportunistic," Cmdr. Murphy said. "I don't think there's a need to be alarmist or extreme about it, I think we need to put it in perspective. "If you look at the data, while we've got over half a million youth aged 10-17 in Victoria, only two percent are offenders." Seeing the operation as a real opportunity to work with government and other agencies, police hope therapeutic options through cautioning and diversion will be applied to future cases. "With youth, our main aim is to actually make sure there are therapeutic options and good justice outcomes," she added. Operation Tidal remains ongoing. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

They’re doing it for ‘Juzzy’ By Nick Creely The Dandenong Football Netball Club and Fountain Gate Cricket Club will come together to hit lymphoma for six when both clubs play off in a Twenty20 match on Sunday 22 September for one of their favourite sons. Justin 'Juzzy' Smith, 24 - the vice-president and much-loved member of both clubs - was recently diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma in the stomach, groin and brain, in what is going to be an extensive journey to recovery after undergoing chemotherapy. Both clubs decided to hold a special fundraising Twenty20 clash at Max Pawsey Reserve in Narre Warren - with the cricketers set to take on the footballers from 12pm - to raise funds for Justin and his family to help pay medical costs, including his hospital stay, treatment and living expenses, with Justin unable to work at the moment. There will be raffles, auctions, face painting, and a jumping castle, as well as plenty of food and drinks on sale on the day. The boundaries should also be tested, with plenty of fours and sixes, as well as spectacular moments in the field almost a certainty. Dandenong Football Club committee member Gail Smith - who is organising the event - said that Justin's impact on both clubs is immeasurable. "He is a dedicated, hard-working man, who puts his heart and soul into the football club, and I also work with him in the workforce, and he's been sorely missed there and his job has been kept for him," she said. "But as far as football involvement goes, you could not get a nicer, would give you the
Justin Smith (left) and his partner Courtney. shirt off his back guy - he's been heavily involved in trying to get sponsorship for the football club too. "If you ask him to do something, he just does it - I couldn't speak highly enough of him.
Picture: SUPPLIED His integrity is second to none. "We're all really sad at the moment that he's going through this, and all we want to do is be there for him and his family." Gail said the committee just simply had to
do its part for its beloved vice president and his family. She believes it's what community is all about. "When he had to finish up at work, we knew he wouldn't have any funds coming in, so we knew he'd be struggling," she said. "As a football club committee we discussed it, and we wanted to do a fundraiser, and because he's heavily involved in the cricket club to, we decided to join with them and contact them, and they came up with the suggestion of the Twenty20 match - the cricketers taking on the footballers. "We just want to assist him with his dayto-day living expenses, as he's not going to be able to work for at least another six months. We want to also raise funds to help his partner Courtney, and his parents, as we all know how expensive parking at the hospital is." And Gail urged the community to get behind Justin on what is going to be a special day, hoping everyone can dig deep and help get the family through a rough trot. "It's extremely important that we can get as many people as possible to attend to support Justin and his family as they go through a really tough time," she said. "We can't support him with his health, and we can't take away what he's going through obviously, but we can try and make it a bit easier for him financially." If anyone would like any further details, or can donate items for the raffle or food, can contact Gail on 0409 802 339. Justin is also writing a blog documenting his brave journey before he was diagnosed and his treatment in hospital. To view it, head to justinsdaysinthedark.tumblr.com
The glorious rise of the Redbacks in Southern By Tyler Lewis The Hampton Park Football Club is undoubtedly one of the feel good stories of season 2019. The Redbacks were easily the best side for the year in the Southern Football League's Division 3 and were rewarded with the ultimate prize with grand final victory over Clayton on Sunday 8 September, 9.11 (65) to 1.5 (11). Hampton Park president Tim Ziegler said he couldn't believe the final result and was so pleased for the reward on effort over the past few seasons, which has seen the club go through a tough trot. "It's a little bit of disbelief," he said. "(After) all the hard work that has gone in over the last couple of years, to finally achieve it (premiership glory), it is well worth it." Hampton Park was the clear favourite against Clayton in the decider, but often sides that lead the competition for an extensive period of the home and away season are knocked off in the finals. However, for the Redbacks, their hunger was overwhelming - something Ziegler said
Hampton Park celebrated a memorable senior premiership recently. Picture: COURTESY OF CHRIS THOMAS has come from years of bad times. "You never know until it is done," he said. "For the first time in a long time we have been the hunted, which was nice. "We didn't win a game for a few years before that which was tough. "To achieve the success this year, after the hard work everyone has put in, is well de-
served by the core group of those boys who have pushed through the tough times. "I obviously couldn't be any prouder." Hampton Park was a club that struggled with knowing where to play within the divisional structures of the MPNFL and South East, and Ziegler believes finding its home in Southern has paid dividends for the small
community club that looks to have a sustainable future ahead. "You always hope it will be the final result," he said. "South became the best option with divisional structures of South East and the Mornington Peninsula. "We decided we needed to make the change and come across to Southern. "We have and we have been able to reach success on the back of that on the back of that move. "I think we should be able to hang on to our core that we have built over the past two years. "The second division is where we wanted Southern to put us at the start of everything. "Moving up into second, we aren't worried, we think we can be competitive - I suppose you never know until you get there but we feel we should be okay." The Redbacks are set to make their move into the second division of the Southern Football League in 2020 after achieving grand final glory in 2019.

The Eagles soar to victory By Tyler Lewis For the Doveton Eagles, Saturday afternoon was almost too good to be true. Not only did the Eagles win the premiership from fourth on the ladder in the Southern Football League’s Division 2, facing a cut throat final each week - they have jumped from third division to the first in two seasons, with two premierships in three years. A grand final fast start is always crucial and the Eagles jumped Springvale Districts from the opening bounce to continue the September dream - leading by four goals at the first interval and, more importantly, keeping the Demons without a major. The Demons got within three kicks before the main break, but neither side could take their chances in the premiership term. A final huddle rev up from Eagles coach Clint Wilson was all they needed to storm home with an emphatic victory. With eight majors to the final break, the Eagles slammed on 8.2 in the final term to run out clear winners, 16.14 (110) to 5.13 (43). Adam Read booted three but it was an overall team performance from the Eagles with 12 individual goal kickers for the day. Cam Carmody was named best afield in an outstanding display for the Eagles as they ran riot over the Demons in the end. Ex-Melbourne forward Russell Robertson finished his career with a flag in the Eagles' colours - officially hanging up his high flying boots at the age of 40 after a stellar career, both locally and in the AFL. Ryan 'Spanna' Hendy - one of the most popular football figures anywhere in the south east - was another to retire on the highest of highs. He started his senior career with the Doves in 1999 as a 16-year-old, and added over 350 games to that tally before retiring as a Doveton Eagles premiership hero.

senior coach Rodney Eade was unable to guide Balwyn into the big dance when his side went down to Blackburn, 16.13 (109) to 10.14 (74). Balwyn and Blackburn faced off in the qualifying final only two weeks ago where Eade’s side came away comfortable five goal winners, but remarkably the Panthers turned it around
following a win against reigning grand finalist South Croydon in a do-or-die semi-final. The Panthers will now face the highly-touted Vermont side in the grand final. The reigning premier isn't shy of the big stage and will look to add another premiership to the cabinet.
Speedy Scotch stamps himself as a star By Gerard Guthrie

Boom youngster Hooked On Scotch set a very wet Sandown Park alight on Sunday evening with a brilliant display in the Group 3, 515-metre Speed Star. With just seven starts under his belt, the superbly-bred Hooked On Scotch - a son of Barcia Bale and Nicki Fields - followed in the sizeable footsteps of his superstar older halfbrother Poke The Bear when clocking a blistering 29.113 seconds on the rain-sodden surface. Poke The Bear, which was also trained by champion mentor Jason Thompson and raced by breeders Darren and Michael Puleio, won the corresponding Speed Star event last September, clocking an almost identical 29.122s. He then went on to win the Group 1 Topgun at The Meadows a month later. Hooked On Scotch was the number one seed for the Speed Star after producing a scorching 29.087s qualifying performance and
the December ’17 prospect started as the $2.90 favourite to win the event, ahead of Sennachie ($3.20) and New South Wales cult hero Feral Franky ($3.60). Hooked On Scotch lived up to the hype and careered away with his match race against Cabin Fever and the accompanying overall $20,000 winner’s purse, comfortably claiming time honours ahead of Sennachie (29.543s) and Black Signature (29.549s). The two 515-metre consolation events went to Sweet As Emm, trained by Brendan Pursell, in 29.348s and Jeff Britton’s Steinbrenner in 29.456s. Jason Thompson started the bumper Speed Star program in great fashion with favourite Spring Bridge taking out the Group 3 595-metre Speed Star. After qualifying with a 34.085s performance, Spring Bridge, a son of My Bro Fabio, started $2.20 favourite to take out the middle distance category and the market proved spot
on as he defeated Blue Striker in the opening match race, running 33.946s in the wet conditions. Andrea Dailly’s $25 outsider Rockstar Prince posted the second fastest time of 34.084s, with third-placed True Detective, trained by Jeff Britton, running 34.371s. “He does trial very quick and in his races he’s a bit awkward and he just hasn’t had a lot of luck in a lot of his races,” Thompson said. “It would’ve been nice if we’d had no rain just to see how quick he could run because he’s run some really quick times in his trials on his own.” The star attraction and long odds-on favourite in the Group 3 Speed Star Stayers (715 metres) was Tornado Tears, which was a two-time 595-metre Speed Star winner previously but looking for his first success in a distance match race series. He was the unbackable $1.10 favourite for the event but had to survive several scares to claim a 42.120s success.
