MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk I went along to the 'Prayer For Rain' event in Warwick's Leslie Park last Sunday and was pleased to see a large number of people turn out, as was the case at other similar events across the region. Whether or not you're a 'believer' is neither here nor there - these events were also about taking time to reflect on the heavy mental burden being carried by so many people in the drought. Timing is everything - the day of prayer came on a weekend which followed bushfires on the Granite Belt, and respect was also paid to the emergency services personnel who responded to those fires and who remain on standby. We hear it said a lot - often by politicians - but ours is truly a regional community in which we care for each other. Everyone - and just about everything - is inter-connected. We also hear the term 'resilience' bandied about a lot these days, to the point where I feel it almost becomes meaningless through over-use. But perhaps it's still the best word to sum up the qualities which make our towns large and small ones of which we should be extremely proud. Jeremy Sollars

POLICE INFO APPEAL CONTINUES BY JEREMY SOLLARS A murder charge against former Warwick resident Vincent O'Dempsey was mentioned in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday of this week, 16 September. O'Dempsey, 80, was charged in August with the alleged 1964 murder of Vincent Raymond Allen and he first appeared in court on Tuesday 20 August. On Monday of this week the matter was adjourned for further mention in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday 9 December. In July, Queensland Minister for Police and Corrective Services Mark Ryan confirmed a $250,000 reward for information relating to the suspected murder of Vincent Allen. Police said Vincent Allen was last seen alive in a vehicle driven by a known associate around 5pm on April 18, 1964. He was never seen again. Despite a thorough investigation his body was never located. Following a coronial hearing in February 1980 the State Coroner declared Allen to be deceased and that his death had likely occurred in the Warwick area. The $250,000 reward remains on offer for information which leads to the
apprehension and conviction of the person/ persons responsible for the suspected murder of Vincent Allen. In addition, an appropriate indemnity from prosecution will be recommended for any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the crime, who first gives such information. · Got information? Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or the Warwick Police on 4660 4444.
·
BACKGROUND ... The following information was released by Senior Sergeant Tara Kentwell of the Queensland Police Homicide Cold Case Investigation Taskforce (HCCIT) on Tuesday 20 August ... · In 2018 HCCIT and Brisbane Region commenced a review into the suspected 1964 murder of Vincent Raymond ALLEN. · As part of our investigation, we have reviewed thousands of pieces of information dating back to 1964, located and interviewed witnesses and conducted a forensic review of exhibits. We have utilised modern policing methodologies to progress a historical investigation to this stage. · Vince ALLEN was a 23 year old single man, originally from Brisbane. He was

one of ten children to now deceased parents. In 1964 he was employed as a construction worker at the Leslie Dam Construction Site and when with Queensland Rail at Karara near Warwick, where he lived in barrack accommodation. As background, between February and March 1964 break and enter offences were committed at two Warwick jewellery stores, where property including watches and safes were stolen. Vince ALLEN provided a statement to police in relation to these offences. Vince ALLEN was last seen alive at Warwick as a passenger of a vehicle driven by a known associate at around 5pm on 18 April 1964. ALLEN's body has never been located. A Coronial Hearing was held in February 1980 in relation to the death of Vince ALLEN. On 2 April 1980, the Inquest concluded and the State Coroner declared ALLEN deceased, and that his death likely occurred in the Warwick area. In response to our recent public plea for assistance, we have received valuable information from the public, assisting us to progress our investigation. We believe there are still witnesses out there who hold vital information, and appeal to any

person who may hold such information to come forward. We are particularly seeking anyone who had any association with Vince ALLEN in Warwick in 1964 to contact Police. We are further seeking anyone who may have any knowledge of the 1964 murder of Vince ALLEN to contact Police. We ask that if anybody has any information, no matter how small or irrelevant they think it might be, to contact Crime Stoppers. It is never too late to come forward. Relationships and loyalties change, people who were once scared may no longer be, and we would encourage these persons to come forward. There is a $250,000 reward being offered for information which leads to the apprehension and conviction of the person/persons responsible for the murder of Vince ALLEN. In addition, an appropriate indemnity from prosecution will be recommended for any accomplice, not being the person who actually committed the crime, who first gives such information. We are appreciative of the continued support of the community and the media to help us achieve these goals. ●
STANTHORPE RACES ARE ALL GO... SO GET DOWN THERE! BY CASEY O'CONNOR "Yes, we ARE racing". That's the message from Neil (Chips) Brunckhorst, President of the Stanthorpe Jockey Club to local Stanthorpe residents, the Southern Downs community and beyond. "There have been plenty of rumours doing the rounds that we would not be able to race because of the drought and then the fires," Neil said this week. "We want to reassure owners, trainers, jockeys, punters and visitors that it is not the case. "In fact it's totally the opposite - it's all systems go." Despite the recent bushfires kissing the western perimeter of the racecourse land it thankfully did not impact the track or any of the facilities. Although the track itself has received little rain, it looks to be in remarkably good order. "If we could just jag a couple of showers between now and race day it (the track) will
The new covered area at Armstrong Park. be in perfect racing condition," an upbeat Chips said during another committee working bee last weekend. Racegoers will immediately notice some changes to Armstrong Park this year. Earlier in the year, the Jockey Club received a $35,000 grant from the Jupiter's Casino Community Benefit Fund (JCCBF). The Club contributed an equal amount from their own coffers to build another covered area which extends from the current
Luxury Karndean
undercover bar area to the building housing the Secretary's office and the Jockeys and Stewards rooms. The large structure will provide an under-cover betting ring and extend the covered area available to patrons in all weather conditions. The annual Stanthorpe Cup meeting is widely regarded as one of the premier country racing events in Queensland. In recent years, the Stanthorpe
Jockey Club has invested significantly in improvements to ensure a day at Armstrong Park is a memorable experience for racegoers. This latest structure is an extension of this work. The 2019 Stanthorpe Cup meeting is once again set down for Caulfield Cup Day Saturday 19 October. Patrons can book for the luncheon or reserve undercover seating in the marquee area by contacting Secretary Jill Brunckhorst (mobile 0400 361 186; email info@wineracing.org) Further information is also available on the club's website www. wineracing.org. The Stanthorpe race meeting is a kid-friendly environment with plenty of on-course activity for younger racegoers accompanied by an adult. Yes, they ARE racing in Stanthorpe in 2019. So it's time to organise that special race day outfit to impress the Fashions on the Field judges, organise your group, book your preferred seating and begin paying attention to the form guide ... ●

fter a week in which bushfires brought devastation to residents of the Granite Belt - on top of a crippling drought communities across the wider region paused for a short time last Sunday 15 September not only to pray for rain, but also to thank the emergency services on the frontline of disaster response.
With the region as a whole looking towards the skies to little avail, local ministers led prayers asking for life-giving rain at Sunday's 'Prayer For Rain' events, and urged locals to be mindful of the mental health burden on our primary producers and on the many businesses feeling the 'knock-on' effects of the drought. At Warwick's Leslie Park Senior Pastor Darren Muller of the Warwick Baptist Church spoke of the sharp reality of the risk
of suicide among people in the agricultural sector at the present time and encouraged frank and open discussion of mental health. Church member Janet Rayner movingly recited a poem written by a close friend whose family was recently forced to sell off their dairy herd, bringing into clear focus the economic reality of the prolonged dry, and the emotional consequences of tough business decisions. As the Free Times went to print this
week the forecast was for the chance of a storm - but with that the heightened risk of lightning strikes triggering further bushfires across a bone-dry region. But amid the despair over the last week there have been glimmers of hope - not the least of which has been the massive community effort in the Stanthorpe area as affected residents moved into recovery mode, while firefighters remained on standby.

And last Friday - perhaps ironically the 13th - Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk visited Stanthorpe shortly after returning from an overseas trip and announced her government will fund emergency water carting for the town to the tune of $800,000 a month - ongoing - plus an additional $2.4 million for associated infrastructure for when Storm King Dam runs dry, still forecast to happen in January next year at the latest. Raw water will be carted by road via trucks - an estimated 40 to 50 truck movements a day - from Warwick's Connolly Dam and fed into two new onemegalitre holding tanks at Storm King Dam, with Stanthorpe requiring an average of 1.6 megalitres (ML) a day for urban use. From the tanks a new section of poly pipe will hook into the existing pipeline from Storm King Dam to Stanthorpe's water treatment plant at Mount Marley, with the new tanks and piping to be in place by the mid-November and currently being installed by Toowoomba firm Newlands Civil Construction. The raw water from Connolly Dam will be accessed by water carters from new filling points on the supply line from Connolly Dam to the Warwick water treatment plant and potentially from a new standpipe which the council says may be installed at Morgan Park - while road upgrades will be required to the Storm King Dam access road and to a nearby section of Eukey Road. A further upgrade - also to be funded by the State Government - will be required at the Stanthorpe water treatment plant to handle the Connolly Dam raw water, which contains levels of manganese. NO FIRE CHARGES LAID With several people charged in relation to bushfires in other parts of Queensland - including children - no police charges have been laid in connection with the Stanthorpe bushfires. Instead police have cautioned against the lighting of "unauthorised fires", such as a rubbish fire at Fletcher between Ballandean and Stanthorpe lit last weekend. Police also told the Free Times that at around 3pm on Friday 6 September "an accidental bushfire started in Plant Road at Stanthorpe" but that investigations "resulted in no further police action required". Other media reported the cause was backpackers who dumped ash
Work on emergency water infrastructure at Storm King Dam is under way. Ms Palaszczuk said last Friday the State Government will allocate "enough funding for infrastructure and the ongoing cost of carting water" for Stanthorpe residents "until 2021". "Around 34 truckloads of water per day will be carted from Connolly Dam to Storm King Dam, while it's needed," the Premier said. "If the drought lifts and the wet season delivers enough water, then the carting will no longer be needed. "With bushfires following the prolonged drought, Stanthorpe will not be left to battle through this alone." Ms Palaszczuk did not set an upper limit on the State Government's financial contribution towards emergency water for Stanthorpe. While the Premier's announcement was welcomed, some have questioned
the Southern Downs Regional Council's forecasts for the current supply of water to both Stanthorpe and Warwick from Storm King Dam and Leslie Dam respectively, with water from Connolly Dam - Warwick's 'backup' supply - in Mayor Tracy Dobie's
Picture: PERDITTA O'CONNOR words now "sequestered" for Stanthorpe. As of this week the council still forecasts that Warwick itself will not require emergency water supplies - which would have to come from outside the region - until December 2020. Continued Page 6
from a fireplace but police said that information did not come from them. Water to combat the Granite Belt bushfires was sourced from Quart Pot Creek with efforts supplemented by flame-retardants dropped by aircraft. Cr Dobie last week told the media there was sufficient water in Quart Pot Creek for any further bushfire response and praised the efforts of firefighters in relation to "cool burning" fuel control operations in recent months in reducing the spread of bushfires. At time of printing of the Free Times this week a bushfire was still burning at Drake near Tenterfield, having burnt out around 58,000 hectares and threatening properties. â—?

"in recognition of the recent bushfire and drought hardships". Deputy Mayor Jo McNally last week said the region "has suffered significant hardship with the bushfires on the back of a crippling drought and it was important to provide the opportunity for ratepayers to have flexible payment options". "Council recognises the changed circumstances with the recent bushfires being so close to the due date for the payment of general rates," Cr McNally said. "Council took into consideration that ratepayers affected by the fires and the drought may be facing hardship from the loss of income as well as physical and mental fatigue. "The payment due date and the discount period end date for the rate notices issued on 15 July 2019 and due on 13 September 2019, has been extended to 11 October 2019. "Payments plans are available and Council officers can provide more information regarding these options." ●

last week categorically stated that a onceoff emergency water supply levy - of $455.60 for owners of a typical residential property in Warwick, Stanthorpe, Allora, Yangan, Killarney and Wallangarra - would now not be required thanks to the State Government's funding announcement. Meanwhile the council is continuing to investigate new sources of water for Warwick for when Leslie Dam runs dry including bores on council land, with one identified at Killarney - and ramping up compliance with current 'critical' level water restrictions for the region of 100 litres per person-per day. So far 11 fines have been issued to undisclosed recipients, but understood to be households using more than 600 litres a day based on random meter readings. The council has not indicated when the region may move to 'emergency' level water restrictions of just 80 litres per person per day.
12426800-ACM39-19
From page 5 Current official dam levels show Leslie Dam is at 5.8% of capacity with 6163ML in storage, but that figure includes 2130ML below the 'dead storage level' - in other words, below the level able to be extracted by the normal pumping system. Water below that level would need to be extracted by temporary or auxiliary pumping equipment. Storm King Dam's official level as of this week was 20.5% of capacity with 423ML in storage, which is below the 'trigger' level for emergency water transport of 450ML stated by council officers at a media briefing last Wednesday, but the council says current supplies in Storm King Dam will hold out until the emergency infrastructure is in place. The council last week released details of 24 companies awarded contracts to cart emergency water to Stanthorpe, 13 of which are based within the council region, with two of the others interstate firms and the remainder from Toowoomba and other southern Queensland locations. Importantly for ratepayers, Cr Dobie

Federal Minister for Water Resources, Drought, Rural Finance, Natural Disaster and Emergency Managementand Maranoa MP David Littleproud visited Stanthorpe on Tuesday of this week, where he announced the establishment of "a group of eminent Australians to help deliver $100 million in drought resilience and preparedness programs to communities every year through the Future Drought Fund". The group will be chaired by locallybased primary industry sector figure Brent Finlay. Mr Littleproud announced the Future Drought Fund Consultative Committee as an "important milestone in taking action on drought". "The committee will now develop the Drought Resilience Funding Plan for the Fund, which begins with a $3.9 billion credit that will grow to $5 billion," Mr Littleproud said. "The Australian Government is getting on with the job of building nationwide drought resilience. "The Future Drought Fund was established to give droughtprone Australians the best tools to plan and prepare for drought and sustain their livelihoods and communities. "To ensure best use of the Future Drought Fund, the Consultative Committee will seek input directly from drought-vulnerable communities for the Drought Resilience Funding Plan. "This committee is made up of people with track records of success in agricultural economics, managing climate risk, rural and regional development and natural resource management. "What's more - they come from rural and regional communities across Australia and the committee is 80% women. "Chair, Mr Brent Finlay, and committee members Dr Kate Andrews, Dr Wendy Craik AM, Dr Elizabeth Peterson and Ms Caroline Welsh will begin their work in Canberra later this month." ●

ROAD OR TRAIN? Some in the community have questioned the plan to transport emergency water for Stanthorpe by road, claiming it could be done more cost-effectively by train via the existing rail network between Warwick and Stanthorpe. A Queensland Rail spokeswoman freetimes.com.au
provided the following response to the Free Times this week "Queensland Rail owns and maintains the majority of the state's rail network, including between Warwick and Wallangarra, but does not own or operate freight train services (only passenger services)," the spokeswoman said. "Therefore, Queensland Rail is unable to provide a cost estimate for this freight request. "The track between Warwick and Wallangarra is available for freight train operators to use, should an operator be willing to assist and equipped with the suitable rail tankers. "The railway line from Warwick to Wallangarra has been closed since Saturday 7 September as a safety precaution due to the bushfires in the area. "We expect our crews will be able to complete inspections of the line this week to assess any damage."

WARWICK 1000 REVVING UP TO PLEASE The WARWICK 1000 - bringing race cars, people, money and water to town ... The Warwick 1000 will hit Warwick's Morgan Park Raceway from Saturday 28-Sunday 29 September, with 1000 kilometres of qualifying and racing held across the weekend. Round 3 of the CAMS State Championship (known as the Warwick 1000 from 2019) will feature driver Jason Clements performing demonstration laps in Al Unser Jr's famous 1986 Dominos Indy car, which boasts 800 plus horsepower and weighs only 700 kilograms. In addition to the weekend of racing, drivers and spectators, many of who are travelling from all over Queensland New South Wales, have been encouraged to bring a slab of water with them to donate to the drought affected town. Event organiser and representative from Queensland Racing Drivers Association, Brett Batterby, said encouraging event goers to bring water with them is a simple way they can contribute. "We understand how serious the problem is for the Southern Downs region, and we want to be able to help in a practical way, as well as help other people outside the region understand just how devastating this drought is," Brett said. "We originally had a goal of 100 slabs of water, but it looks like we are going to go way beyond that, and we'll be working with the local Lions Club to make sure the resources get to those who need it most," he said. "We're thrilled to be returning to Warwick and the picturesque and challenging Morgan Park Raceway for this huge weekend of racing. "Nine different categories of cars will battle it out to be the 2019 Queensland State Champion, with over 30 races across the weekend." Admission for children is free. Adult day passes are $10 for Saturday, $15 for Sunday or a weekend pass for only $20. For more information visit qrda.asn.au or visit Warwick 1000 on Facebook. â—?

SNAKES ON MOVE BY JEREMY SOLLARS Local snake-catcher Drew Godfrey has issued a gentle warning to residents who live in bushland or near it, as snakes continue to come out of their winter 'brumation'. Contrary to what some people believe, snakes don't hibernate during the winter months but instead go into 'brumation', meaning they're awake but are far less active than in spring and summer. With the warm weather now here snakes are on the move and they're looking both to feed and to breed. As far as snake behaviour is concerned, the drought on the Southern Downs and Granite Belt has some important consequences, not the least of which is reduced access to water. Drew Godfrey says as a result snakes are likely to venture closer to yards and homes than they normally would, but the good news is there's a simple way to keep them at a distance - and it doesn't involve bird netting
Dry conditions mean snakes are travelling further afield in search of a drink.
(which is illegal, in that it's against the law to kill a snake) or snake repellers, which Drew says are a waste of money, more likely to attract a snake through ground vibration mimicking a rodent - than keep it at bay. That's due to the fact snakes are deaf, and 'hear' through their bodies. "What I advise people who live in the bush or who back onto bushland is to put out some small containers of water - icecream containers work well - out past your fenceline or along the fenceline," Drew told the Free Times. "Snakes can smell water for up to a kilometre or more depending on the species, but if you put some water out it means they'll be far less likely to come into your yard or even inside your house looking for it. "The extreme of drought we're currently in means snakes will obviously be travelling further to find water. "They tend to use fencelines as a guide for movement and they will generally rather go around a fence than go under it."

NEWS That said, Drew has been called out to remove snakes from the kitchens and laundries of some local residences in recent weeks - the more likely 'wet' areas of a home - and in one rare case from inside a child's toy box in their bedroom. Stacks of timber around homes are also attractive to snakes looking for a hiding place. But Drew says there's no reason to panic when it comes to snakes, which only use attack as a form of defence when threatened. "There's no such thing as an 'aggressive' snake," Drew says. "The best thing to do is to just leave them alone and let them do their thing - right now they're looking for food and for mates and most of the time they're just passing through. "But with the dry conditions there is a heightened risk of snake encounters, so it's important to be aware of that. "The drought has also meant that prey animals for snakes have been thinned out so food is a lot more scarce. "The bushfires in the Stanthorpe area also mean snakes are moving out in the
same hole, but that's really unusual and it's a sign of the dry conditions." Drew is also a member of Granite Belt Wildlife Rescue and he and other group volunteers have been dealing with wildlife injured in the recent Stanthorpe area bushfires, and says the impact of the fires on native animals has been devastating. While Drew advises locals to heed his advice and "leave snakes to do their thing", if you do happen to encounter one that's chosen to take up residence in or around your home he's happy to safely remove it give him a call on 0458 491 123. For emergency animal rescue in the Stanthorpe area contact the Granite Belt Wildlife Rescue hotline on 0418 144 324. ●
open a lot more with vegetation on the ground cleared out. "In most cases snakes can outrun a bushfire unless they're close to the point where it starts. "As well as water snakes can also smell smoke from quite some distance away during the recent fires my own reptiles were freaking out and trying to get out of their enclosures as they could smell the smoke." The most common snakes in our region are the Eastern Brown and the Red-bellied Black, and Drew says there are a few myths and misconceptions about both species. But he also concedes the extreme drought is forcing some unusual changes in 'normal' snake behaviour. "Black snakes generally prefer wetter locations and their usual prey is amphibians and reptiles, whereas brown snakes are mammal feeders," he says. "A larger black snake will sometimes prey on a baby brown snake but generally speaking the two species tend to avoid each other. "That said, I did have one instance where a black and a brown snake were sharing the

HUGE FINES FOR FISHING NEAR DAM WALL Secretary-treasurer of the Warwick District Recreational Fish Stocking Association Inc Ed Kemp wishes to advise anglers who fish at our dams in Queensland, especially Leslie Dam, not to fish in prohibited areas. "People who fish within 100 metres of a dam wall face a hefty fine of $533 and if they do not have a SIPS Permit to fish in dams in Queensland, there is another $266 fine for fishing without a permit," Ed said. "There is no excuse for not knowing the fishing rules and regulations and every month there are approximately 20 complaints made to fisheries officers locally and quite a few people are getting booked. "At Leslie Dam, for instance, there are advisory signs telling people where they are not allowed to fish and the public is advised not to tamper with or destroy these

NEWS
U3A OFFERS 'LIFELONG LEARNING' · Tuesday 24 September we are manning a table in Rose City at the foot of the escalator hoping to raise our profile and spread information about courses available and the offer of "5 terms for the price of 4" for new members who enrol for courses for term 4 · Term 4 commences on Monday 7 October. There are still places in some continuing courses. On the website there will be information in the next Newsletter concerning courses that will be offering in 2020. Pictures taken at the recent U3A (University o0f the Thirs Age) luncheon show members enjoying fellowship over a good meal which was subsidised from a small accumulated fund. Although mostly members are focussed on small group activities built around learning, recreation and outdoor activity, the larger group occasions are an opportunity to meet other members. The recorder group entertained attendees with a bracket of popular and well known numbers. Later the ukulele group strummed and sang for us displaying the enthusiasm that their group generates. freetimes.com.au
Member Doctor Reg Lance gave us a talk on his life work with barley breeding and other grains and developments in Australia and other countries, specifically Ethiopia, to develop breeds with higher nutritional value - so essential in countries which depend on cereals and legumes for their basic dietary requirements. On 24 September members will be at a table at the foot of the escalator in the Rose City Shopping Centre (southern end) to answer questions, to promote the club and its activities on offer for term 4. At the start of the new term on October 7 new members will be able to take the opportunity of joining now and paying at the same time for the entire year 2020. 5 terms for the price of 4. Information about courses is always being updated on the new website. Several new courses are proposed for 2020 and places are available for term 4 in some existing classes. Visit the website at u3awarwick.org.au to find out more. Make contact with the club through the website or at the Shopping Centre on 24 September www.u3awarwick.org.au ●

BEATRICE HAWKINS
VIEW FROM ABOVE IS SPECTACULAR Anyone who has been reading my ramblings over time would know that I really love my country and the various landscapes, flora and fauna. I was privileged to fly over a large portion of it recently and, as it was clear skies almost all the way, it was a delight to have a window seat and be able to look down. Western Queensland, NSW and South Australia were uniformly brown and desolate except for occasional areas of irrigation. They looked, from 30,000+ feet, as dry as when I had driven through in April/May. The various salt lakes were an interesting distraction - I hadn't remembered there were quite so many. As we approached the Great Australian Bight I was surprised to see green where I expected to see brown at the edge of the Nullarbor, obviously there had been some rain through that area. Approaching Perth it was very green and a delight to the eyes after the dry time we have experienced in our area for so long. Heavy rain greeted me at Perth airport and continued for some days. Cold, wet and windy but wonderful to hear heavy rain on a tin roof! I had almost forgotten what it sounded like! Driving around Perth on the highways it was great to see so many wild flowers used on the verges in full spectacular bloom. Western Australians are very proud of the diversity of their flora and the government bodies make full use of this tourist attraction where they can. It has been too wet at this stage to visit
Hakea are blooming in the West. Kings Park and see the variety there but I will be taking full advantage of the time of the year and abundance of flowers in bloom while I'm visiting. While everything appears green and flourishing and crops are doing really well, I believe that the rainfall this year is well under the average. Timing is everything in the west and the canola particularly has grown well and is flowering spectacularly. Huge expanses of gold and green can be seen driving from Perth to my daughter's once you leave the forested areas. My daughter has some really lovely native shrubs in her garden and they attract many birds both large and small. They do have one very old, well cared for, one-eyed, white cat called Captain that doesn't worry birds, so

little wrens hop right up to the window sills and peer in at what is happening. One particularly hardy native is a small grey-leafed hakea that is covered at present with lovely delicate blossoms in a range of pink shades. She tells me it flowers now, then again in summer if there is any rain at all and finally, reliably, in autumn. Particularly hardy, it is growing in clay soil and survives on rainfall only. Another is a spiky-leafed grevillea that flowers year round and attracts bees and birds in large numbers. I would like to be able to identify this one and will take a piece to a nursery somewhere and see if they can tell me exactly what it is so I can buy her several more. I am also enjoying being woken by the
raucous laughter of Kookaburras that I don't hear as much as I would like when I am home in my area of town. Here is some trivia that I wasn't aware of - Kookaburras are native to the eastern mainland of Australia but have been introduced to WA, Tasmania and some parts of New Zealand. Reading the local paper I have found a new plant that may be worth chasing when I get back, if we have had rain and water restrictions have been eased - it is the gold fish plant! In photos the flowers do look remarkably like gold fish. The botanical name is Nematanthus Strigillosus and it is described as "an evergreen trailing perennial or sub shrub liking dappled shade or tropical conditions to be at its best". It can however, be found all up and down the east coast and in cooler areas. It just might do OK in a pot on the protected eastern side of my house if I can find a specimen. It is certainly unusual and would be interesting to try. I also found another one with the same common name, but botanically is Columnea Gloriosa. It appears to be more of a trailing plant for a hanging basket and I have seen it around Warwick, but to my way of thinking, you need a pretty good imagination to see the flowers as gold fish! Don't forget the garden competition in the first week of October. Schedules and entry forms are available as usual from Bryson's in Palmerin Street, and remember, we are all dealing with the same conditions, so enter your garden even if you think it is not as good as you would like it to be. ●

THE SPIN
NO SERIES WIN, BUT ASHES ARE DONE The cards finally fell the Poms’ way in the final Ashes Test. They lost the toss and got a get out of jail free card when they were asked to bat and the Aussies couldn’t take a catch no matter how simple. Mitchell Marsh made the most of his opportunity landing his first five-wicket haul in the first innings. Warner found another way to get dismissed falling this time to Archer. Shock horror when Steve Smith could only manage a paltry 80 you knew we were in trouble. The Poms could smell a win when they began their second innings and against a wilting attack set us a 300-plus target after failed DRS reviews and more poor catching. (Paine now considering doing an Umpires course to help him with DRS calls). Warner continued his horror story against Stokes and was out cheaply. When Smith was dismissed for 23 the Pommie crowd, despite giving him a well-deserved standing ovation, knew the end was nigh. Matthew Wade repaid the selectors’ faith with a gutsy ton. Alas a series win was not to be - but the Ashes are safely in our keeping. After watching all that unfold I tuned in to the Broncos match on Sunday. There’s 80 minutes of my life I’ll never get back. There are no printable adjectives to aptly describe that performance. The players and coach should issue a blanket apology to their fans for what was a performance not even worthy of an Under 12 side. Simply a debacle. The Director of the Board, the CEO, Coach and playing group have all come under serious attack from fans, Broncos Old Boys and media. The glory days of the Broncos are only a distant memory and it is hard to see how they can turn around the club fortunes. Meanwhile we celebrate the emergence of a superstar in Fijian flyer Maika Sivo who could teach a few over paid and underperforming Broncos a thing or two about life and entitlement. All I can say is the Broncos would not have had much to celebrate on Mad Monday so we shouldn’t see them behaving badly on social media. I can’t see the much-lauded annual presentation evening in 2019 being a barrel of laughs either. - Casey BACK ON COURT Stanthorpe Association Croquet players have returned to the court with two games played last Tuesday Andrea Denkewitz played a solo hand against Carol Verwey and Grace Howard. Howard who had a break of three consecutive hoops and her partner were off to a good start early in the game. Verwey was making the long roquets. In a good individual performance Denkewitz came from behind to win 26-19 after scoring a break of three and a ’peel. Meanwhile Joy Newman also played solo against Effey Russell and Heather Widderick. Despite playing some good shots including a break of three hoops in a row Heather and her partner went down 26-17. On her way to the win Joy Newman also had a break of three and made three ’peels.. Only one game of Ricochet Croquet was played last Thursday. Andrea Denkewitz and Val Fancourt teamed up to play Bill Golding and Carol Verwey. 22 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

Ballandean's Anika Spiller fights for the ball in the ladies' Grand Final against Tenterfield. Anika was the leading goal-scorer in the Ladies' competition. under17 girls In a close contest Andrea and Val had a 26-23 win despite some excellent hoop shots from their opponents. SMALL GROUP BUT GOOD CONTEST A small group of six players were on court for the Friday morning Gateball games. Team One included Andrea Denkewitz, Grace Howard and Heather Widderick. Bill Golding, Joy Newman and Val Fancourt formed Team Two and they opened play with an 11-7. Their opponents hit back in the second game scoring a 12-9 win. Grace Howard played a leading role in the win, earning an extra shot with a ’gate and touch’. It would however be Team One’s only victory. Team Two wrapped up the final two games. They won the third 11 points to 8, after some accurate play from Val Fancourt. In the final game they skipped away to a comprehensive 18-7 win keeping Team One’s balls off the court. Heather Widderick both played well for Team One in the final games. ORIENTEERING RETURNS TO POPULAR LOCATION Orienteers make a return to Dalveen on Sunday for their last bush event before many club members head south at the end of the month for the Oceania Carnival. The Oceania Carnival, also incorporates the Australian Championships, has attracted over 1,000 competitors from around Australia and New Zealand. This year it is being held at venues in Wagga Wagga and Cootamundra in New South Wales before moving to Beechworth in Victoria. The Dalveen property which plays host to this weekend’s competition has been used for orienteering for almost 30 years. It has proved a popular venue for the sport, combining open eucalypt forest and grazing land with scattered areas of granite. Sunday’s event is expected to again attract large numbers of Orienteers from Stanthorpe, Warwick, Inglewood and Toowoomba and in particular a number of local juniors in the Queensland Schools team. They will be competing in the Australian Schools Championships, which are being held as part of the Oceania Carnival. On Sunday, seven courses will be offered catering for all ages and levels of ability. There will be short, easy courses suitable for beginners and instruction will be available on basic map reading and navigation skills. Local people who would like to learn more about the sport are most welcome to come along and try this family friendly sport
Thursday, 19 September, 2019
The courses are located off the old Stanthorpe/Warwick Road, 8km north of Dalveen and will be clearly signposted. Further details of the event can be found on www.oq.asn.au/event-calendar, by phoning 4683 6374 or emailing bbb@ oq.asn.au GREMLIN GIRLS HAVING A BALL The Stanthorpe Gremlins were celebrating on Saturday after the Under 17 Girls League Tag won the grand final. It was another tough game against a formidable Goondiwindi side. The Stanthorpe girls played extremely well to win the game 8-4. The final score line however does not reflect the closeness of this game. The grand final win caps off a stellar season for the girls who earlier in the season won the President’s Cup. The girls secured the first grand final win by any Junior Gremlins side since 1996. The Under 15 girls played Tenterfield in what developed into an epic battle. The score was all tied up at full time sending the game into extra time - 10 minutes each way. In the second half of extra time Tenterfield secured the winning points. The final score 30-22. It developed into an amazing game and the Gremlins supporters should be proud of the efforts of this group of girls who have played bravely all season with just one reserve. Congratulations to their coach Roger O’Brien, Bonita and the support staff who have done an amazing job all season with both the Under 17 and Under 15 sides. OLD AND NEW Shooters on the Inglewood range had some fun last Sunday trying out the old and the new facilities before lining up for a gallery rifle shoot. Andrew Clark took the honours in the gallery shoot. Out pointing Stephanie and Rau Dudgeon who took out the minor placings. Competition this weekend will begin on Saturday as it is the fourth weekend of the month. The programme will begin at 1.00pm with Rimfire Rifle Benchrest which will Saturday followed by Centrefire Metallic Silhouette (on the new targets) at 2.30pm. Night action will kick off from 6.006.30pm with the Action Match, Muzzle Loading Pistol. Competition will continue on Sunday beginning with Action Match at 9.00am followed by C/F Metallic Silhouette at 10.00am.
The club’s monthly meeting will be held at 1.00pm and the weekend will wrap up with DTL Clays at 1.00pm. LUDLOW CAVALLARO IN A COUNTBACK After returning 41 points in Saturday’s Stableford competition at the Stanthorpe Golf Club, Trevor Ludlow had to wait for the outcome of a count back before he was declared the winner after Santo Cavallaro also finished his round with 41 points. Ludlow got the nod after his nine score of 25 points won the day. He also collected the pro-pin at 1/10. Sponsor for the round was local business Aqua Rural. The Stanthorpe golf club members and committee and extremely grateful to all local businesses for their continued support of the club during such difficult times Greg Fraser(5/14) and Darryl Boekholt (9/18) picked up the remaining Pro Pins While Santo settled for the runner’s up spot Greg Fraser (40), Keith Jones (39), Angelo Maugeri (39), Ian Pickering (38) and Ian Harvey (38) each collected a ball in the run down. Matt Waterworth picked up the birdies nest at the eight. Pin shots went to Kev Rowling (3), Matt Waterworth 12) and Scott Constable (17). Ladies captain, Annelle Batterham claimed the win in the ladies event. Her score of 36 points one point better than Sandra Morris on 35. A count back was required to determine the runner up. Kay Webb settled for a ball in the run down after also returning 35. Ladies pin shots were won by Nikki Waterworth (3), Racheal Hendry (12) and Helen Jones (17). This Saturday the club joins with the Newley family for the very annual Laurie Newley Memorial golf day. It is a popular day on the Stanthorpe Golfing calendar and single stroke event will be sponsored by the Newley family. This year the September monthly medal and putting competition will be played in conjunction with the event. The scheduled Monthly Medal comp was cancelled due to the recent fires. Tee off will commence from 11.00 am and there is a time sheet on the board at the club house. ORDER OF RAKES Members of the Stanthorpe Golf Club, Whiskey Club have purchased a number of rakes and officially presented them to the bunker volunteers. It has been agreed that going forward the Bunker Volunteers shall all be known as ‘Members of the Order of Rakes’. Following this momentous occasion there is no doubt that the bunkers on the Stanthorpe Golf course will be in pristine condition for all future events. I’m reliably informed that these pristine bunkers will now invite regular visits from local and visiting golfers. FOUR TABLE MITCHELL AT BRIDGE The Stanthorpe Bridge Club played a four table Mitchell with 32 boards when they met last Thursday. Margaret Warren and Judith Mobbs played well to win the N/S. In second place were Hilary Richardson and Carol Axworthy. Winners of the E/W were Margaret Brooks and Keith Barnett. Margaret Finlay and Joy Newman finished in second place. The next big event for the Stanthorpe Bridge Club is the Border Pairs played on September 22nd. This competition is played between Stanthorpe, Warwick, Tenterfield and Goondiwindi and while it is hotly contested should be great fun for all players as they vie for the regional bragging rights. freetimes.com.au

OLLIE WINS 10TH SCOBIE BREASELY AWARD Champion jockey Damien Oliver cemented his place as one of the all-time greats in the saddle recently when he claimed his 10th Scobie Breasley Medal at the Victorian Racing Awards recently. It was back to back medal wins for Ollie. HIs previous wins came in 1996, ’99, 200104, 2014-15 and ’18. In the race for the Scobie Breasley Medal, which is decided by Victoria Racing Stewards Oliver polled 60 votes. Stewards allocate 3-2-1 votes at Metropolitan meetings throughout the season. Oliver was a clear winner ahead of Metropolitan Premiership jockey Craig Williams (52). Although retired super mare Winx was in the thick of the action also. The mare
crowned Racehorse of the Year for the third consecutive season, matching the 2011-13 feat of Black Caviar. Winx polled 114 votes in the Racehorse of the Year category streeting her opposition in much the same way she did on the throughout her career. Heiress apparent Mystic Journey polled 52 finishing a distant second followed by Tony McEvoy’s sprinter Sunlight (47). Then came Melbourne Cup winner Cross Counter (15) and Santa Ana Lane (12). There is the odd milestone in racing that Winx’s trainer Chris Waller has not achieved - one was the Fred Hoysted Medal for training excellence in Victorian. That situation has been rectified after he won the gong for the first time. Waller drew 128 votes for his effort to pilot Winx to an unprecedented fourth Cox Plate victory. The Lindsay Park training partnership of David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig, won the Metropolitan premiership. Lindsay Park led in a total of 64 winners on Metropolitan tracks during the 2018-19 season. They also won the overall Victorian title with their 158 country winners taking the stable’s combined haul to 222 for the campaign. If are wondering who to follow in the upcoming Spring racing carnivals you could do no worse than hop on board with some of the 2018/19 Victorian racing award winners. UNITED GO BACK TO BACK IN ANOTHER THRILLER The Stanthorpe Football grand finals went ahead last weekend after being postponed the previous week due to the bushfire situation. A week later fans were treated to one of the most memorable A Grade Men’s games in recent history. It was exciting and intense and produced some outstanding play. Stanthorpe United were looking to secure their third successive grand final win over rivals Ballandean. The Ballandean ’Mountain Men’ started favourites after finishing the regular season undefeated for 10 games. The game began at a frantic pace with both sides not allowing their opponents anytime on the ball. The pressure led to turnover of possession and many goal opportunities went begging. The opening goal did not come until the 30th minute when United fullback Josh Musumeci broke the deadlock. Musumeci headed the ball from a corner down low on the bounce directly to Jared Crisp who in turn headed the ball, this time in the other direction. The move wrong footed the Ballandean keeper Jeremy Willoughby and the ball was into the corner of the goal. Redbacks led 1-0 - game on. Both sides had further goal scoring opportunities in the first half but went to the break with the score unchanged. The start of the second half saw Ballandean dominate in attack. The Mountain Men pounded the United goal
CASEY O’CONNOR
with Merritt, Purcell and keeper Crestani doing whatever they could to repel the onslaught. Twenty minutes into the second half Ballandean were awarded a free kick outside the box and their Captain Ben Rametta smacked the ball into the bottom corner to level the score. Ballandean had all the momentum and five minutes later another attacking raid down the right flank had the United defence at sixes and sevens. The ball found an unmarked Bradley Knight 10 yards out from the United goal and Ballandean shot to a 2-1 lead with 20 minutes remaining. United coach Steve McEvoy immediately changed United’s formation to a more attacking structure introducing some fresh legs up front. It was a pivotal moment in the game as the attacking momentum Ballandean enjoyed early in the half was beginning to take its toll on some of their players. The landscape of the game changed suddenly . A Ballandean player was sent off and Ballandean Coach Neil Newman was forced to make some changes to his line-up. United were also forced made an injury change due to the send-off incident. Ballandean dropped a striker as they tried to hold out United, who could smell blood. Twelve minutes out from full time Liam Hitchener had a golden opportunity to score but desperate defence from Zac Willoughby and Aiden Halford forced his shot wide. Manahan and Crisp both shot from distance for United but were also unsuccessful. Could Ballandean hold on with only eight minutes remaining? Liam Hitchener again found himself in the open and made no mistake with this attempt as he coolly put the ball into the goal for a 2-2 score-line: With the luxury of an extra player, the momentum swung back to Untied as the Ballandean defence tired. As the time clock would down and extra time was looking likely United continued their quest for a winner. With just three minutes remaining a George Merritt corner found an unmarked Liam Hitchener on the near post. Hitchener sent the ball into an open goal to give the Redbacks a 3-2 lead. Ballandean were not done with and had one final throw of the dice when they were awarded a free kick outside the box. This time United goal keeper Crestani had the shot well and truly covered. As the full time whistle blew the United players descended on their retiring coach Steve McEvoy to celebrate the win. There were some outstanding efforts from players on both sides. The work rate of the United midfield of Murphy, Davies and the Hitchener brothers laid the foundation for United’s win Ace McDonald was one of Ballandean’s best and was well supported by Rametta and Halford.
STELLAR SEASON FOR BALLANDEAN LADIES The Ballandean Ladies football side capped off a stellar season with a win in the Stanthorpe Ladies grand final on Saturday at the CF White Oval. Their unlikely opponents were Tenterfield who came from the clouds in the final rounds of the competition to secure their place in the grand final. Tenterfield went into the game with nothing to lose. The teams went to the half time break at nil all. Tenterfield threatened to upset the apple cart when they put on first points in the second half. Sarah Day took full advantage of a mistake in front of goal and beat two defenders to post first points for Ballandean and level the score. Chances went begging for Tenterfield as the game headed to extra time. As she has done so many times in recent years Sarah Day managed a little magic with the ball to put her team one up in extra time. Ballandean defended the lead for the next 10 minutes before celebrating their undefeated season with a grand final trophy. In other results Inter Club defeated Carlton 3-1 in the Fillies. Junior Colts City defeated United 2-1. Senior Colts Ballandean defeated City 2-1. COACH HANGS UP CLIPBOARD Saturday’s win by the United A grade Men’s side marks the end of an era as club Stalwart Steve McEvoy hangs up his coaching clipboard - albeit with a smile on his face and another grand final win in the bag. McEvoy walks away from his coaching position after a 20 year association with the United Redbacks. He began his coaching career as coach of the Senior Colts. A position he held for five years before stepping up to coach the A Grade side. During his tenure as coach of the A Grade side he continued to coach the Senior Colts for a time winning 12 Colts premierships along the way. He had great success with the United Men’s A grade side. Winning 11 grand finals including a record eight in a row. In 2017 United returned to premiership glory. It was an emotional win for McEvoy and the team coming only a short time after the sudden death of Angelo Musumeci, the Manager of the A Grade men’s side and one of the stalwarts of the club. McEvoy brought a sense of professionalism to the club and coaching and mentored many of the young players to take on administrative roles within the club. Following Saturday’s win he said it was time for another to pick up the baton. ●
