‘Rebirth’ is the word for 45-year-old cancer survivor Kathryn Pantorno. Ravaged by years of treatment, a mastectomy and painful rehabilitation, an “embarrassed” Ms Pantorno had taken down her bathroom mirror. Then she was artistically transformed. Her vibrant chrysalis produced by a body-paint artist is there for all to see - in a calendar of women cancer survivors for charity So Brave. During the photo shoot, her body was coated with a rainbow of colours, flowers and parrots. ‘Rebirth’ is scrawled in the palm of her hand. “I don’t think the smile came off my face,” she said of the results. “I didn’t care who was looking. I wanted people to look. “My body was a canvas of art.” The 2020 calendar launch on 14 September was a “real tear-jerker,” Ms Pantorno said. It’s been the highlight of her cancer survival. “All I hoped for was that you could see how happy I was on the day (of the photo shoot). And you definitely can. “All the 12 girls (who modeled for the calendar) were teary, proud and beautiful. They were beaming.” In the process, she met 11 other models who were diagnosed under 40 and trod the same lonely, harrowing path. In 2011, Ms Pantorno - who worked at a Dandneong North pharmaceutical - arrived at that junction at 37 with the discovery of a sixcentimetre breast tumour. Desperate to have a child, she delayed treatment for IVF. In the meantime the estrogen drugs, as part of IVF, fed the tumour to eight centimetres. It needed to be reduced to one centimetre for its removal. Ultimately the chemo took over and ruined her chances of motherhood. The cancer spread to two lymph nodes, so treatment was aggressive. Eight chemo sessions, 35 radiation treatments, two blood transfusions and a mastectomy. In chemo, her fingernails, toenails, eye-

Drug cocktail seized in car

Students Emanuel, Haleem and Athan make a cubby at Bush Kinder. 198119 Picture: CAM LUCADOU-WELLS

Old school By Cam Lucadou-Wells It might be a surprise to know that kids are still jumping in puddles, mucking around in bushland and building cubbies. But Heritage Preschool and Rosewood Downs Primary School students are discovering natural play in what they call Bush Kinder. The children and staff from the two campuses make monthly trips together to Tirhatuan Park's wetlands. In this free-range classroom, play is freeform. The explorers find birds, turtles and frogs by the lakes, and are routinely welcomed two friendly local ducks Chloe and Clive. Or they forage for insects and other creatures nestled in trees and logs, huddling around to share in their discoveries. Inside the forest, bark and timber cubbies have been enthusiastically assembled. Heritage Preschool educational leader Deb Maillard said at first the children were tentative about how to play in the local wilderness. It was a matter of saying 'be safe', but not to

stop them exploring. "It probably took them three sessions where they actually took to it. "We showed them that they could walk and jump in puddles - some had never owned gum boots before." Parents also turn up for Bush Kinder, many surprised by the 20-hectare park with its endangered and scenic habitat. Now the families are starting to enjoy barbecues together on the weekends. Along the way the children are taught awareness around dogs and snakes. They're keen to pick up any litter they find in their wonderland. "We don't want to leave too much of a footprint," Ms Maillard says. Rosewood Downs principal Julian Growcott says much of this style of play came naturally to him and his childhood friends. He says the outdoors classroom brings a relaxed, enjoyable way of learning. "The park is a really under-utilised asset. "Half the kids don't realise how big this place is."

A cocktail of drugs has allegedly been seized from an intercepted car in Dandenong. Dandenong Frontline Tactical Unit police arrested three people in the vehicle, which they stopped on Stud Road about 2.50am on 19 September. Police allegedly seized about 20 grams of heroin, as well as methylamphetamine, cannabis, morphine and cash believed to be proceeds of crime. A 30-year-old Dandenong woman was charged with trafficking heroin and four counts of drug possession as well as possessing the proceeds of crime. A 21-year-old Dandenong woman was

charged with trafficking heroin, possessing prescription medication, possessing proceeds of crime and commiting offences on bail. Both women were remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court that day. A 39-year-old Dandenong man from Dandenong was charged with possessing a prohibited weapon. He was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 26 September. The arrests are part of Victoria Police's Operation Tidal, an ongoing highly visible police operation in Casey, Greater Dandenong and Cardinia police service areas.

Cool taste of success Springvale Snow Fest 2018 has taken out a national prize as Australia's best community event. The event, in its seventh year, recently took out the category at the Australian Event Awards in Perth. Each year, it brings the snow and winter activities to thousands of festival goers in central Springvale's streets. Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades said the win against "very impressive competition" was a "major coup". "Winning this award further cements Greater Dandenong's reputation as a City of Celebration," Cr Blades said. "Springvale Snow Fest has won a number of awards and continues to draw crowds in excess of 40,000 people each year. "The fact we are able to bring real snow from Mt Buller to Springvale each year gives our community the chance to experience all the fun of the snow right in the heart of their own backyard."

IN BRIEF Senior thwarts bag snatcher

Robbery watcher By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has been jailed after watching on while his girlfriend and her sister held up a Doveton supermarket with a pole and a stove lighter. On 3 February, Narzzouli Togo, 25, stood in the doorway of the Foodworks store demanding cigarettes that he said were promised to him by a staff member the day before, the County Court of Victoria heard. His girlfriend and her sister then walked in with their weapons, threatened two workers at the counter and demanded cigarettes. One of the workers was told “I’ll kill you” by the girlfriend and spat upon by the sister. After the worker hit the duress button, the girlfriend leant across the counter, grabbing phone cards and cigarettes. The three offenders fled together. The day before the armed robbery, Togo had been arrested at the supermarket for shop theft and possessing a controlled weapon. He had been fined and released at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on the same day. In sentencing on 18 September, Judge Felic-

ity Hampel described Togo as “more of a follower than a leader”. Togo told police that he didn’t know of his co-offenders’ intentions, but acknowledged he didn’t act to stop the robbery, Judge Hampel said. The judge noted that Togo’s sharing in the stolen goods was a sign of his complicity. “By you standing there as if guarding and keeping watch, you would have added to the fear of those employees.” Togo’s crime was a “relatively low-level example” of a serious, prevalent offence directed at “soft targets” such as supermarkets, service stations and convenience stores. There was no apparent pre-planning, it was relatively short and Togo wasn’t armed or making verbal threats, Judge Hampel noted. However, his observing role didn’t reduce his culpability, Judge Hampel said. He faced a mandatory jail term. Togo had a “troubling” criminal record as well as a long history of drug abuse, particularly with ‘ice’. He’d grown up “fatherless”, left school early and never had a job.

Courts had placed him on rehabilitative community-based sentences - and he’d breached every one, the judge noted. Judge Hampel was struck by Togo’s “spontaneous” gratitude after being “shamed” by elders at the County Koori Court. In what was “not an easy option”, Togo accepted the elders’ “very direct” advice to seek meaningful drug rehab, vocational training and employment. Togo - who wanted to connect with his Koori heritage - had said it was the first time he had spoken with elders. Judge Hampel rated Togo’s rehabilitation prospects as “reasonable” if he left behind his “drug-taking” circle and followed the elders’ advice. It was in the community’s interest that Togo was supported by parole programs upon his release, she said. Togo was convicted and jailed for three years, including an 18-month non-parole period. His term included 134 days in pre-sentence detention.

Magistrate Gerard Bryant, left, and “Mark”, who completed Drug Court. Other staff members, including councillors and support workers, praised Mark's "positive energy" and accountability. Mark told the room he was grateful for the

An Uber taxi driver has suffered a broken nose during a violent carjacking in Scott Street, Dandenong. The 66-year-old man, from Brunswick, was punched in the face by a man who got in the front passenger door about 6.30pm on Sunday 15 September. The driver fled from his vehicle, a 2010 white Ford Falcon station wagon, to escape his attacker. The offender climbed into the driver's seat and drove away. The vehicle was found abandoned the next day in Mt Martha. Any information to Greater Dandenong CIU on 9767 7487 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au

Two men have been arrested over an attempted armed robbery in Springvale. Police say that a man was held up at knifepoint as he got into his vehicle on Albert Avenue about 11.50pm on Sunday 15 September. A man got out of a vehicle that pulled up alongside the victim. The alleged perpetrator demanded the victim's property and assaulted him with a knife. The victim fled on foot and called police. During patrols of the area, police intercepted a vehicle on Stud Road, Dandenong North about 1.20am on Monday 16 September. A 30-year-old Rosedale man and a 51-yearold Dandenong North man were arrested and interviewed by police. The Rosedale man was charged with attempted armed robbery and theft from a vehicle. He was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court. The Dandenong North man was released. He is expected to be charged on summons pending further enquiries, police say. The arrests have occurred during Operation Tidal, a period of a "highly visible" police presence in Casey, Greater Dandenong and Cardinia regions.

Court can be a dour place at times, but not so at Dandenong Drug Court's graduation ceremony. Instead, courtroom two was filled with praise, pride laughter and even tears of joy. On Tuesday 3 September, three participants completed the program and another graduated, in a demonstration of the success of the therapeutic-based justice of Drug Court. Magistrate Gerard Bryant began the session by acknowledging how special the occasion was for not just the participants, but their families and loved ones and members of the Drug Court team who had watched each participant grow. "It occurred to me how special it is to have three people completing who started two years ago and have stuck with it," Mr Bryant told the courtroom. "That's a measure of their determination and motivation to better themselves. "Today is a celebration of people transforming their lives." One by one, the participants came forward to hear their final judgement announced. Mr Bryant spent some time talking to each individual, reminiscing about their time on the program and praising their self-discipline. Participant 'Mark' said while it had been a long two years, he was sad to say goodbye to Drug Court. "It feels like home. It's a safe place at Drug Court," he said. Mr Bryant said Mark had been genuinely committed to his drug treatment order, even taking on the role of chairman of the participant representative committee. He encouraged Mark to "walk the talk" as he left the program and re-entered the world.

An 83-year-old woman was bruised but undefeated while fighting off an attempted robber in a supermarket frozen-food aisle. She wrestled back her handbag after a male tried to snatch it from her trolley in the Woolworths store in Dandenong Plaza about 9.30am on Tuesday 10 September. He walked away empty-handed. The victim suffered soreness and bruising to her hand. The robber was described as 170 centimetres, slim build and wearing a dark jumper and pants. New centre ‘hear’ for you By Danielle Kutchel A new cochlear care centre promises to give south-eastern residents easier access to worldclass support and services. The South Eastern Cochlear Care Centre, a partnership between Hearing Australia and Cochlear Australia, was officially opened on Tuesday 17 September by Professor Graeme Clark, the inventor of the multi-channel cochlear implant. It will provide both paediatric and adult services, and can cater to multilingual patients through translation services. Professor Clark was accompanied by Pakenham resident and cochlear implant recipient Roger Platt. Mr Platt had his first cochlear implant 11 years ago after witnessing the improvement one had made to his daughter's life. He says it had a dramatic impact on his own life. "Before that it was hard mixing in groups and talking, I just shied away from people because I didn't want to keep asking them to repeat things," he said. But not long ago he found the hearing in his other ear had begun to deteriorate too, and last month he had his second implant. The new centre in Dandenong will make

life much easier for residents on this side of Melbourne, Mr Platt said. Prior to its opening, patients would have

to travel to the centre in East Melbourne, a lengthy day trip, for access to hearing professionals to see if they were a candidate for a co-

chlear implant. Nick Fitzgerald, Chief Financial Officer at Hearing Australia, said through the centre, the two organisations hoped to reach more patients by improving their access to hearing professionals, as well as increase awareness of how cochlear implants can assist people with hearing loss to regain their lives. "It's great to see the expansion of those services so people can rediscover the sounds they love and experience what they need to with family and friends," he said. That has certainly been the case for Mr Platt. "I don't mind being amongst people and I actually look for conversations. You're not off in your shell," he said. He now gives back by volunteering for hearing studies, and has an important suggestion for anyone worried about potential hearing loss. "If you feel you've got a bit of hearing loss, go and see a hearing professional and have a hearing test and see where you're at with your hearing. "If you leave it you can get into depression. You will shy away from people ... do a test and you'll have a much better life." The South Eastern Cochlear Care Centre is located on Halpin Way in Dandenong.

Cocaine accused faces court over drugs and weapons By Cam Lucadou-Wells An accused cocaine trafficker has faced court after police allegedly intercepted him in a car with drugs and weapons on Princes Highway Dandenong. Prparim Rustemovski, 33, of Dandenong, did not apply for bail during a brief hearing at

Dandenong Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 17 September. He had been on bail when police allegedly intercepted and arrested him earlier that day. Police say they seized 61 grams of cocaine, $600 cash, an unloaded pen pistol with a matching bullet, the drug diazepam without a prescription and an extendable baton

from the vehicle. Rustemovski was charged with offences including trafficking and possessing cocaine, possessing an unregistered handgun and ammunition and possessing a controlled weapon. He was also charged with dealing with proceeds of crime, allegedly the cash, digital

scales and an Apple iPhone. Dandenong Frontline Tactical Unit police also charged Rustemovski with commiting indictable offences whilst on bail. The court was told that Rustemovski had no prior convictions. He was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 14 October.

Accused a ‘powder keg’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Springvale father who held a meat cleaver with a two-year-old child during a domestic stand-off with police on Christmas Eve has been refused bail at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court. The man - described by magistrate Rodney Crisp as a “powder keg” - is fighting assault and reckless conduct charges. He argues that he didn’t realise the uniformed police outside his home were police. “They’re outside the premises, he’s inside the premises,” a defence lawyer told the bail hearing on 17 September. “They did not identify themselves as police. He didn’t realise they are police.”

Magistrate Crisp described the defence argument as “small”. “So there’s a stand-off with police, and the production of a knife was valid because he did not know they were police?” Police had been called out to the home in the early afternoon of 24 December due to reported family violence. They negotiated with the armed man for about 30 minutes. Since then, the man - with no prior convictions - has been remanded in custody awaiting his hearing. In arguing for bail, a defence lawyer argued that the man faced a longer time in remand than his likely sentence. “Bearing in mind this was before the court

at a contest mention in April where it was indicated if he pleaded guilty he would be released. “He’d served enough time at that time.” Mr Crisp noted that the man’s nine months in remand was still “far away” from his possible two-year maximum jail term. “I’m not sure you can say with great confidence this is a case that would only attract nine months.” The man’s case was originally set down for a contested hearing in July. It was postponed until 21 October due to the man contracting flu while in prison. In May, bail had been refused due to the man being an unacceptable risk, the court heard. According to a subsequent psychological

report, the man had no diagnosed mental illness or cognitive disability, the court heard. In sum, he appeared to be “just stubborn” and “unrealistic”, Magistrate Crisp said. Mr Crisp said he was not convinced there was a compelling reason to release the man. Even if there was, he remained an unacceptable risk. “This is a child he’s holding with a meat cleaver. You can see why he’s an unacceptable risk. In any case, the trial delay was now “twothirds over”, Mr Crisp said. “The delay is no longer much of a delay.” The man was remanded for a hearing in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 21 October.

Full flavoured festival fun An enthralling mix of Lion dances and sumptuous South Asian street food celebrated a Full Moon Festival at Dandenong Market on Sunday 15 September. More than 31,500 visited the festival, which marks the brightest and fullest moon of the year. According to Chinese custom, it is a symbol of peace, prosperity and family reunion. The action-packed program included a diversity of dance groups and kung-fu demonstrations. A tempting menu of satays, dumplings, hokkein noodles and a street barbecue was also on offer.

Staying cyber safe By Danielle Kutchel Fraudulent bills, so-called 'Nigerian princes' and credit card hacks - it seems every day there's a new story about cyber scammers preying on innocent victims. Now, a group of over-55 Dandenong residents has the know-how to avoid the traps thanks to a visit from a cybercrime expert. Julie Mackenzie visited Herbert St Community Managed Co-operative on Tuesday 10 September to listen to residents' stories and provide tips on how to avoid potentially ruinous scams. There were nods of agreement when Ms Mackenzie asked the room if they had ever fallen victim to cybercrime, demonstrating just how common the issue is. She told the Journal that she volunteered her time to provide the seminar to residents. With a background in trauma and having worked as a social worker and been involved

Julie Mackenzie has a background in physical and cyber trauma. 196999 in global events like the Bali Bombings, Ms Mackenzie said she had seen the impact of traumatic incidents on people. "When it comes to cyber, it's a different type of trauma," she said. "The trauma is that they feel violated because they can't see, touch, smell, hear or feel the enemy."

Film’s Cannes ‘short cut’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells A locally-shot film that won one of the world's most prestigious awards leads an international list at this year's Short Cuts Film Festival. All These Creatures won the Palme D'Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival last year. It was a "massive coup" for the film part-funded by City of Greater Dandenong, says Short Cuts curator Richard Moore. "From the start (of Short Cuts) four years ago, one of the aims was to encourage more stories in the local community and to get local talent on-screen. "The success of this film shows it isn't such a large step from Dandenong to Cannes." In 14 minutes, the film movingly tells of an Ethiopian family with a "traumatic past". "It is a heart-felt story. The judges must have been compelled by the beauty of the film," Moore says. "A lot of technicians worked on it. It looks and sounds absolutely exquisite. "The lead actor, a young boy, is just amazing." Other festival highlights include the "harrowing" film Caroline, which was in competition with All These Creatures for the Cannes awards. "So we've got two of the top contenders in film playing off against each other again." The fourth annual festival - "a mix of the serious and humorous" - features films from Iran, France, Sri Lanka and the US, as well as Australia. Another of the local products is a short doco on Melbourne muso Broderick Smith. There's also a prominence in "particularly remarkable women's stories" such as Kayla an Australian-produced work about a young girl in a Turkish village. "We don't go in with an agenda but they've just emerged from the pile," Moore says.

Richard Moore calls the inclusion of Cannesprize winner All These Creatures as a "massive coup" for Short Cuts Short Film Festival. 197789 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS "They're really strong films about contemporary women's issues - not grandstanding, they're a lot more subtle than that." For the first time, young film-makers took part in a 10-week mentorship program. Three powerful works produced by the 15 youths will premiere in the festival. Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades said the line-up tickets would be in hot demand. "The Short Cuts Film Festival continues to attract impressive entries from across the globe," she said. "Add to this Greater Dandenong's flourishing reputation as a highly desirable film location and you have the perfect recipe for success." Short Cuts Film Festival screens for one night only on Saturday 5 October, 7.30pm at Drum Theatre, Dandenong. Shorter Cuts 2019 featuring short films by young film-makers will screen at Little Day Out at Ross Reserve on Sunday 6 October. Tickets $10. Bookings: Drum Theatre, 8571 1666 or shortcutsfilmfestival.com.au.

At the co-op seminar, Ms Mackenzie spoke of an 82-year-old woman who had taken her life after being scammed and losing all her life savings. "I have seen a lot of things and worked in a lot of trauma, but to hear that, I can't comprehend that and that's why I'm here," she told the room. Ms Mackenzie spent much of the session stressing that viewers can enjoy the internet - but that they need to be vigilant about the potential risks. She touched on password security, internet dating and online banking, and told residents they could contact her any time with any questions they might have. Robyn Mangan, wellbeing workshop facilitator at the Herbert St Community Managed Co-operative, said the seminar was important and addressed an emotive and sensitive issue for residents.

Amazon beds down to help Staff at Amazon fulfilment centre in Dandenong have turned up to work in their pyjamas, in solidarity with children with cancer. It was 'PJammin Days' on 18 and 19 September, as part of an Amazon Goes Gold global initiative on childhood cancer. The centre will present more than $5000 to Royal Children's Hospital's children's cancer centre in Melbourne. "Every year, thousands of children wear pajamas for weeks and months straight while in cancer treatment," Amazon Australia operations director Craig Fuller said. "Amazon Goes Gold not only raises awareness around this issue, but brings a spotlight to the incredible work that is being done by many organisations to increase survival rates and find a cure for childhood cancer."

Brave rebirth From front page She drank vegetable juices, shunned sugars and exercised in the gym when she could. She fought on. But the challenges continued even after remission. During her reconstruction, there were failed breast implants - one of which excruciatingly tore through her skin. The skin had been so stretched, Ms Pantorno endured agonizing months of being unable to lift her arm. Having battled to stay at work during chemo, she finally had to take a year off. When one of the implants was removed, she spent a month in hospital on a vacuum pump to help heal the eight-centimetre skin wound. It didn’t work, so a painful skin graft was taken from her leg. There was an idea to recreate a breast from her abdominal area. But Ms Pantorno had enough of surgery and settled for a prosthesis. “I could finally lift my arm and put my clothes on the line.” The suffering has made her stronger, determined and more independent, she says. But it has also taken a lot away. “You do have a different outlook in life. A lot of friends left me, even my partner - they couldn’t handle it. “I have different friends now - different ladies at work who helped me go through it every day. “You realise who your friends are, as well as my family who helped me through. “In the end, it does break you. It changes you.” Some people’s eyes “open up” when she tells them she has one breast. “Now instead of telling everyone, I’ll get the calendar and poster and pin it up on the wall. “It shows that it doesn’t matter how you look. You can still look beautiful.” With no family history of breast cancer, Ms Pantorno says other young women need to be vigilant. She still gets three-monthly check-ups, takes estrogen-blocker tablets and suffers osteo-arthritis as a chemo side-effect. “That’s the side-effects that people don’t realise. It continues forever.” The So Brave calendar helps fund support programs for young women with cancer, breast cancer awareness programs and medical research. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women under 40. Nearly 1000 are expected to be diagnosed in 2020. To buy a So Brave 2020 calendar, go to sobrave.com.au

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 25 September 1919 Romeo and Imaginary Footpad A circumstantial story of how he was robbed at the revolver's point was related to the South Richmond police late on Friday night by a youth of 19 years, a cigarmaker, who lives in Dandenong. He had been in the company with his sweetheart, he said, after parting with her was walking along Brighton Street, South Richmond, when he was seized by the neck by a man. Lyndale’s speedy authors By Danielle Kutchel There was no writer's block to be seen at Lyndale Secondary College last month as students raced to complete a brand new book - complete with illustrations - in just 12 consecutive hours. It was all part of the Write a Book in a Day competition, which is run by, and raises funds for, The Kids' Cancer Project. The Kids' Cancer Project is a national charity that supports childhood cancer research. The competition takes place between 1 June and 31 August every year. This year, five teams from Lyndale of up to ten students each - 47 students in total - took part in the event, writing and illustrating their manuscripts in just 12 hours. On the day teams were given a unique set

of parameters to use in writing their story: two human characters, one non-human character, an issue, a setting and five random words. The creative process begins at 8.00am and by 8.00pm teams had completed their illustrated books. The books were then sent to children in hospitals across Australia. On Thursday 22 August, the students were brought together to celebrate their work and given a copy of their masterpiece. Kalli Ioannou-Booth, director of whole school literacy at Lyndale, said the annual competition has become something that students look forward to. "Every year more teams sign up to have fun working together to create a book from scratch for a good cause," she said.

Noble Park Probus turns 35

A dark light By Cam Lucadou-Wells Only a dark light can reveal what lies hidden on the surface of Zakiria Tahirian's work. The Dandenong artist has riddled invisible ink and UV ink figures onto his abstract creations -revealed only under red and blue light or glowing in the dark. These hidden motifs are much like the experience of a refugee, Tahirian says. "When refugees come to Australia they have a really happy face. "But on the inside, they're missing home, they're missing friends and starting a new life." All of his work's hidden imagery will be revealed at the annual HOME exhibition in Dandenong. Tahirian is one of six selected artists from an asylum seeker or refugee background taking part in the City of Greater Dandenong show from 3 October. The invisible ink technique evolved from being a cheat method for Tahirian and his friends during school exams in Pakistan. It was especially handy in maths and biology tests, Tahirian recalls. An Afghan Hazara, he fled from the perils of targeted suicide bombings in Pakistan. "I had come from a place that was tough for artists. There wasn't appreciation there. "It was hard to make a living. And people don't understand what art is - it's a bit annoying." Despite the obstacles, he trained at the Hatif Art School and set up Pakistan's "first serious art" gallery. As a curator and workshop facilitator, he paved the way for a new generation of artists and art appreciation. He still remains close with a creative network of 20 friends, sculptors, film-makers, painters and writers from his former home.

Zakiria Tahirian explores the hidden life of refugees using invisible-ink inscriptions. Tahirian arrived in Australia in 2017, within months taking part in his first HOME exhibition. "I was new to the country and new to the industry - it was a great opportunity to be part of it. "My topic was all about myself and the journey. "I came here to be safe." Two years on, he paints houses to support himself and his family. He's the only one of seven family members that is working. Fitting in time for art is all about "management", he says. "For everyone it's tough. You start a new life and it's a bit challenging. "I'm just happy that I'm here." HOME is at Walker Street Gallery, corner Walker and Robinson streets Dandenong from 3 October-2 November. The official launch is Saturday 5 October, 2pm-4pm. It also features a series of talks and workshops with the artists. Details: greaterdandenong.com/home

Members celebrated the 35th anniversary of the Combined Probus Club of Noble Park at a lunch on 12 September. The social club, known for convivial outings, holidays and gatherings for 55s and over, lunched at the South Eastern Masonic Centre in Keysborough. The function was marked with a cutting of a birthday cake by members Don and Jan Amos. The neighbouring Sandown Probus Club also attended. Like other Probus Clubs, the group is about fostering friendships and social connections among retirees. It was founded in Noble Park in 1984, later meeting in Keysborough before returning to Club Noble as its ranks grew. Its inaugural five-day holiday was a coach trip to the Blue Mountains several decades ago. Many interstate and country tours have followed including to the Flinders Ranges, Tasmania, Merimbula, Wagga and the Ettamogah Pub. Not to mention the countless day trips, mystery tours, coffee mornings, lunches and cinema excursions.

FOCUS ON … SCHOOL HOLIDAYS AND GETAWAYS

Corner to connect Endeavour Hills Shopping Centre has launched its ‘Community Corner’. Located near the north entrance of the shopping centre, the space is designed for you – the local community. At the Community Corner, you will find out information on events and services from local organisations such as the Men's Shed, Lions Club, Endeavour Hills Library and many more. It also features a kids' book swap where locals can borrow, donate or simply sit and read a book. Shoppers and retailers alike are already im-

pressed and praising the new initiative at the centre. One retailer said it was a “Fantastic initiative by our shopping centre…”, while other customers commented on the “beautiful space”. Given the position in the local area, the Endeavour Hills Shopping Centre wanted to create a space, where people can engage with others in the community explained Marketing Manager Lauren Pascale. “Endeavours Hills Shopping Centre is not just a place to shop, it is a community hub,

a place where people want to feel connected and informed. By bringing the Community Corner to life, we hope the community will be proud to call it their own.” Open everyday from 9am to 5pm, the Community Corner also includes a new initiative called The Bag Exchange. The Bag Exchange has already received positive feedback, which is a great step towards the impending bag ban occurring later this year. "It’s simple, if you have too many bags, share them with your fellow shoppers, or if you forget , borrow one," explained Lauren.

Countdown to family fun Families are invited to join in the fun of an outer space adventure at the 2019 Greater Dandenong Children’s Festival. The two-week celebration will be held throughout the school holidays from September 21 to 6 October. Now in its eighth year the festival offers a series of free and low cost events at venues right across the city. Events and activities this year are all themed around Space Adventure. This includes the deckchair movie sessions which will be held in Harmony Square at 12pm each weekday of the school holidays, except the Grand Final Day public holiday. In addition to the movies some of the key activities on offer during the festival include making your own flying saucer pizza, a tree planting session under the stars and a make your own spaceship art and craft activity. The headline event –Little Day Out– is back again this year and will be held at Ross Reserve on Sunday 6 October from 11am to 4pm. This year visitors to the Little Day Out will travel to a world filled with stars, planets and solar systems thanks to a pop-up planetarium. Greater Dandenong Mayor Cr Roz Blades said the festival was one of the biggest on the Greater Dandenong calendar, attracting more than 20,000 people each year. “This is a festival filled with fun and adventure,” Cr Blades said. “Strap yourself in and prepare for blast off. This year’s festival promises something for everyone.” This year’s Little Day Out will also feature the Shorter Cuts Film Festival – a collection of films for children. The films will screen at the Noble Park Community Centre at Ross Reserve. For a full list of Greater Dandenong Children’s Festival events for 2019 go to www.greaterdandenong.com/childrensfestival

Wild fun for the teens City of Casey’s teen school holiday program offers animal experiences and plenty of other activities on the wild side. Starting 23 September, the low cost fun includes roller skating, splatball, circus, a suspended-indoor climb, diet cooking, cinema and a trip to Myuna Farm in Doveton. Free, supervised transport is also available. Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon said the “maximum fun factor” program “ticks all the boxes”. “The young people make new friends, it’s inexpensive, safe and just plain fun for the kids.” Casey Youth Services’ team provide a safe, respectful space for young people who make friends less easily than others, Cr Stapledon said. “Because they spend time together each day, sharing fun experiences, there is a strong chance that they will come back raving about how lovely everyone was and the new friends they made. “For any parent this is always heart-warm-

throughout those two years,” he said. “It instilled in me that as tough as I think I have things, there are always people out there who are doing it a lot worse than me. “That’s why I got involved in the local community.” Initially that was through the Keysborough Learning Centre. “The centre loaned me a computer for me to do my school work,” he said.

Lee Tarlamis says his older brother’s cancer battle inspired him to spend his life helping those less fortunate. His service culminated in a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, announced on Monday 11 June. The Noble Park man and former state Upper House MP received the nod for service to the people and Parliament of Victoria “I’m extremely humbled. It’s not something that I’d expected,” he said. “I didn’t do it to get acknowledgement. “It was about wanting to provide assistance and help to people. “It’s a view that I formed very early on.” Mr Tarlamis said his brother fought cancer for two years before dying at age 17. “The trouble and the stress that the family went through, I saw how positive he was

“I wanted to repay the favour so I was volunteering time with them.” There he met then-politician Eddie Micallef and became his electorate officer. “That’s how I got into the politics world,” Mr Tarlamis said. “That opened up a lot of opportunities to provide assistance to community groups.” He never intended to run for parliament, but “one thing lead to another which lead to another” and he was a South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP from 2010 to 2014. “That was such an honour as well, when you consider the fact that very few people get to hold that position and represent that large number of people,” he said. Mr Tarlamis was a Springvale Benevolent Society volunteer from 2002 to 2012, a Noble Park Community Action Forum member for many years, a founding Springvale Multicultural Men’s Shed committee member, and more.

He’s now a senior advisor to Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings. The world of politics is not where he thought he’d end up. The Tarlamis family moved from Oakleigh to Keysborough when he was eight months old. He went to Wallarano Primary School in Noble Park and to Chandler Secondary College, where Keysborough College’s Acacia campus now stands. Mr Tarlamis went on to study an associate diploma of business. “I grew up working with dad in the family businesses,” he said. “I thought it would be logical that I would go into the business world and maybe into management or something like that. “I really enjoyed the community stuff. “Politics became that vehicle to do it.”

Cops’ wild chase

By Brendan Rees

A Casey resident has described the moment a driver "hurtled" towards her after an alleged stolen car wound its way through Hampton Park on Monday 1 April.

hit flying in the air and I was thinking 'God, I haven't been killed and hope no one behind me is killed.'"

Ms Dzedins said: "It was very frightening, I was very lucky."

"I could see bits of car flying up into the air, like I think mirrors or I don't know; door handles, something like that," she added. "There must have been so people just affected literally by the accident."

It came as police were led on a two-hour wild pursuit which began about 12.30pm after a four-wheel-drive was allegedly stolen from Cranbourne. The vehicle was later set alight, police say, before the speedsters fled in a station wagon and later hijacked a ute in Hampton Park. The ute crashed where police say the driver was seen getting out carrying a rifle, which was used to carjack a Ford ute in Carrum Downs. Witnesses say they saw the vehicle drivdriv iing on the wrong side of the South Gippsland Highway in Cranbourne.

Cardinia Highway Patrol arrested two men and a woman who attempted to flee on foot after their ute crashed into a truck on the South Gippsland Highway. The driver, a 26-year-old male from Cheltenham, tested positive to methamphetamine and had his licence disqualified disqualified. He was charged with aggravated carjacking;

counts of obtain property by deception and eight counts of theft. A 22-year-old Pakenham man was charged with aggravated carjacking, four counts of theft of a motor vehicle, arson, two counts of burglary, obtain property by deception, two counts of theft. Both men were remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 2 April. A 21-year21-year-old Dandenong woman was charged with ttwo counts of theft of a motor vehicle. She was bail bailed to appear at Frankston Magistrates' s' Court on 3 September. Anyone one with information is urged to contact Crime ime Stop Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Panthers are raring to go By Nick Creely There's going to be a tinge of unpredictability about Dandenong this season, with plenty of emerging players set to be given a chance to lock down spots in the Victorian Premier Cricket powerhouse's side throughout the year. With the Panthers' men's side set to kick off its campaign with a one-day clash against Melbourne University at Shepley Oval on Saturday 5 October, champion skipper Tom Donnell told the Journal that the group is excited to bounce back after an untimely exit in last year's semi final against Fitzroy-Doncaster. "We're really looking forward to it (the season), it's going to be good," he said. "I really enjoyed last year, it was a fun year for all of the boys, but we probably expected to challenge and be good enough to beat the better sides, but we tried our hardest and fought it until the end, which will hopefully leave us in good stead. "Hopefully we can continue to do that, work hard and keep trying to improve - finals is always the goal, and whatever happens from there, happens. "We'll look to try and make the eight this year, and go from there." There has been very little movement in terms of the Panthers' batting group for this season, with stars in reigning Ryder Medal winner Brett Forsyth, Lincoln 'LJ' Edwards, Donnell and James Nanopoulos all ready and raring to go around again. "We've got some pretty good players (in the batting group)," he said. "If Brett (Forsyth) can have anywhere near his year last season would be great, LJ's (Edwards) hundred against Fitzroy was one of the best innings I've ever seen, so those two will always get some good scores, but it's just a matter of staying consistent and not having a weakness in our side. We want to be even all the way through." Donnell also said he expected a heap of improvement from developing batsmen Comrey Edgeworth, Josh Slater and Ed Newman, as well as Cameron Forsyth - who will all be looking to nail down first XI spots - in a sign that the depth of the batting is as improving year by year. But the Panthers have lost a chunk of their fast bowling stocks ahead of this season, with Adam McMaster transferring over to Melbourne, Darren Pattinson retiring, James Wilcock returning to local level with Berwick and Paddy Turner moving to the Gold Coast. Donnell said that while it's not ideal to lose so many quality quicks at once, the club understood these changes were going to happen last year, and have planned accordingly. In a way, Donnell believes it will make the Panthers quite an unpredictable, at times youthful bowling unit. "There's probably going to be a bit of movement within the team, certainly in the bowling perspective, but we had a bit of a taste of that

Dandenong skipper Tom Donnell is excited for the upcoming season. 187705 last season not having Darren (Pattinson) for a lot of the season," he said. "We didn't have McMaster last season, and Wilcock had a great start to the season and struggled with injury from there, so the transition probably started last year. "Going into this year it'll be similar - we'll chop and change, and it'll come down to form and how the guys are going, and depending on weather and conditions, we'll go from there. "We're far from settled, there will be some young guys that will get good opportunity this year in those roles - we had Jakeb Thomas come along well last year, so it'll be on guys like that to step up this year and keep improving

which is good." Donnell hinted that the Panthers could inject their share of spinners to Shepley Oval throughout the season, with the club recruiting Gehan Seneviratne from Carlton, as well as former Sri Lankan test spinner Suraj Randiv, who was in Dandenong's SuperSlam side last season and played club cricket with Dandenong District Turf 1 club, Heinz Southern Districts. The Panthers also have left-arm tweaker Akshat Buch, who was second on the wickets tally last year and was incredibly impressive with his control. "He (Seneviratne) bowls leggies and bats well, so he'll really add to our depth in that

department - he'll be close (to Round 1) selection. "And Suraj Randiv will play for us all year, so we'll look to play a couple of spinners anyway and see how that all kind of fits in. "However many bowling spots we have I'm not sure, but we'll just look to play our best side and figure out what fits." Donnell also said the club is excited by young quick Triyan De Silva, who has crossed over from Monash Tigers. "He'll be in and around the mark, and certainly play first XI cricket this year at some point which is exciting for us," he said.

Curtains close on Neo Cleo’s magnificent racing career By Jason Adams One of Australia's most versatile and consistent greyhounds, Neo Cleo, has been retired. The decision was made after she was defeated in a match at Speed Star on Sunday 15 September, however that will have no impact on how her racing career will be remembered. "She split a webbing last month and I was on the verge of retiring her. "I gave her a week off then a 400m trial. Her performance on Sunday wasn't what we expected, I hoped she would run around 34 seconds flat," said Rob Neocleous. "She didn't hurt herself, Des Fegan (vet) went over her this morning and he couldn't find anything wrong. "I think it's the right time and I don't want to over race her. She's raced regularly for the last two years at the highest level." Neo Cleo is a three-time Group winner at Sandown Park and won over all three distancdandenong.starcommunity.com.au

es. Her finest achievement was when she took out the Group 1 Sapphire Crown in May, the sport's biggest race for female greyhounds. Her other Group 1 success came in last year's Sale Cup. She won 35 of her 76 career starts and won $432,784 in prize money. "I've been involved in the sport for 40 years and had some good ones, but she is the best of them. "She's raced against the best, won four Group races, set two track records and won 14 races at Sandown - it's what people dream about." She will now begin a breeding career with Neocleous expecting her to come on season in November. "She'll lounge around, get spoilt and as the weather gets better spend some time in the sun," he said. "Once she does come on season it's highly likely she'll go to Fernando Bale."

The AFL has announced a significant funding boost to footy's grassroots. 179445

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

Footy funding flow By sports editor Russell Bennett Community football netball clubs have long been crying out for AFL House to listen to their concerns about the game at the grassroots, and it appears AFL House has been listening. The AFL recently announced, as part of the 'Victorian Community Football Initiative', that it will boost the game at the local level by $18 million from 2020 to 2022, while also waiving the highly-publicised and much-criticised AFL affiliation fee. That alone is set to save footy regions more than $3.2 million per year over the next three years.

Also announced was $3 million to fund volunteers, while the financial burden associated with buying guernseys, socks and shorts from the AFL's preferred suppliers will also be lessened. There will be a reduction in on-field apparel costs for players of $290,000 each year through a renegotiated licensing agreement. Funding will directly benefit more than 840 clubs and about 90,000 players, with the South East, Outer East and Gippsland regions set to save more than $450,000, $395,000, and $280,000 respectively each year. Umpire registration fees are also destined for the scrap heap - saving an estimated $80,000 per year. Star News and the Berwick-Pakenham Gazette first broke the story of the sacking of the AFL Gippsland region commission back on 14 May, which kick-started a chain reaction highlighting, in many publications across the country, the unrest that exists within many clubs when it comes to uncertainty surrounding their long-term futures. That story had wide-ranging ramifications across Victorian football and netball, not just the sports in the Gippsland region. Former AFL Gippsland commissioner John White spoke to the Gazette and Star News on the night of the commission's sacking, saying the decision "has long-term implications for the direction of football throughout the Gippsland region". In regards to the latest developments, he told Star News: "It's nice to have the AFL acknowledge that the volunteers in community football are being heard, and the AFL is listening. "This contribution they're making here is a start towards a program of reconstructing community football. "The additional $3 million to be spent is also a major win, which - if utilised correctly -

will take a lot of pressure off volunteers. "I'll continue to watch and participate in future developments, which will flow from this announcement." Clubs throughout the area had started looking closely at their own backyard long before that fateful day in May. They clearly wanted more control of their own destiny. But May the 14th highlighted it. Then, growing numbers of football and netball people started urging AFL House to hear the voice of the bush - before, they feel, it's too late, and irreparable damage has been done. White set up a Change.org petition calling on AFL House to listen to those at the grassroots level. He also wrote a letter to AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan calling for a true "community engagement model" in a review into regional and community football. "Our call for an independent review of the relationship between AFL Victoria and regional, (or) country football and netball is driven by the communities who rely on their clubs in galvanising the hard-working volunteers serving those communities," it said. "The cost of administration has risen, the need for volunteers has increased, and yet there remains questionable support from AFL Vic - don't believe me? Go ask (the) people who toil each weekend trying to keep their clubs active and their heads above water." According to the AFL, the objectives of the 'Community Football Initiative' are "to ensure the long-term sustainability of community football, to provide immediate relief to clubs and volunteers, support volunteers in the increasing complexities of running a local football club, and to accelerate rebuilding community football at a grassroots level".

WHAT’S ON at the Dandenong Stadium

Noble Park stars Jackson Sketcher and Kyle Martin, as well as Rowville's Ziggie Alwan and Anthony Brolic, have been named in the Eastern Football League Premier Division's Team of the Year after all enjoying stellar individual seasons. At the 2019 Chandler Medal on Wednesday 18 September, the two Bulls stars in Martin and Sketcher were rewarded after putting together consistent seasons in an otherwise tough year for the club, with the pair named on a half-back and on a wing respectively. Alwan - named on the bench - kicked 23 goals from his 19 matches for the Hawks to be one of the most damaging players in the competition, while star on-baller Brolic was named ruck-rover after an absolutely golden year. The night's main award, the Sir Gilbert Chandler Medal - awarded to the league best and fairest for the Premier Division - was won by former Port Adelaide forward Brett Eddy from Vermont with 16 votes, with the star forward kicking 62 goals in the home and away season to be the dominant player of the competition. Sketcher placed equal fourth with 12 votes to cap off his outstanding season, while Brolic also came close to winning the award, finishing in third on 14 votes.
