Connecting kids By Romy Stephens Disengaged students can often struggle in the confines of a classroom. That's why Mount Evelyn Primary School is working to provide these types of students a place to reside and stimulate their minds. The school celebrated its Hand on Learning (HOL) program on 20 September, with parents coming to see projects students had delivered since the start of this year. The HOL program allows at-risk or disengaged students to take part in hands-on projects that help keep them in school and make school life more enjoyable.

happen but that's what we're hoping, that they just feel better within themselves." Mel Cooper is the mother of a student involved in the program. She said she had noticed a considerable difference in her son's behaviour since he started the program. "He is very hands-on with everything he does so being out of the classroom has really helped him," she said. "There's not much else around like this, it definitely suits these kids that aren't good at sitting still and sitting at a desk with a book. "Friday is his favourite day, he gets up and gets ready for school without any questions."

They attend the program every Friday and work on different activities such as gardening, landscaping, constructing furniture and painting. Kids involved also received a uniform with high-visibility tops and jumpers. Mount Evelyn Primary School HOL organiser Jessica Harris said the program is designed to help students feel better in both school and daily life. "If their behaviour's not so great in class you hope that they will find a sense of place here and then that behaviour translates back to the class," she said. "That's the ultimate goal, it doesn't always

Grade 6 student and HOL member Khalen Thiele said he really enjoys the chance to get out of the classroom and do hands-on projects. "I've got a super, super amount of energy and it helps me because I'm out of class getting my hands dirty and actually running around," he said. "Class is fun because you're with your friends but I struggle to sit down a long time. "I like being in Hands on Learning because I can run around and actually get energy out of my system." IN BRIEF

Some healthy steps By Derek Schlennstedt As a mother to three boys - aged one, five and seven - Olinda local Natasha Laurie has spent more time in the Angliss Hospital paediatric ward than she would care to remember. From broken bones, to croup and asthma attacks, Ms Laurie has spent innumerable hours in waiting rooms and has already made 10 trips to the Angliss this year. It was during a recent 16-hour wait that Ms Laurie recognised the need for a recreation room for kids and decided to start a fundraiser. "We have had a shocking year of Hospital trips ... around 8-9 trips to hospital between the three boys," she said. "The last time I was there at the Angliss with my five-year-old son we spent 16 hours in paediatric department. For the first few hours it wasn't too bad. "when he first started to perk up we occupied him with our phone, but after about 7-8 hours my phone ran out of battery and there was nowhere to charge it." "There was no TV in the common room or cubicles and he was just in tears by the end, because he just wanted to go home." Ms Laurie said while there were some toys, they were only appropriate for toddlers. Rather than complain about the lack of entertainment options, she decided to contribute and has organised a fundraiser walk with all proceeds going towards buying kids entertainment equipment for the Paediatric ward at the Angliss Hospital. "We have spent some time at the Royal Children's and Monash and you can't compare it, but you go to those hospitals and there's trolleys with toys and charging points on every desk." "We're so grateful that the Angliss is there,

Certain roads throughout the Yarra Ranges will be sealed over the next decade as part of a major road construction program. Yarra Ranges Councillors supported a motion, at their 24 September meeting, which listed numerous priority roads to be sealed across the region. The initial focus ? for the first two years ? will be on unsealed roads that have schools, preschools and key community facilities on them. Once these have been completed work will start on roads within townships and the urban growth boundary. The motion stated that a Special Charge Scheme will be implemented to construct the roads within urban areas. This would see residents adjacent to relevant roads contribute a fixed amount of $7000 per development unit rather than the previous cap of $15,500. Yarra Ranges Mayor Tony Stevenson said the funding will help fast track road sealing ef-

Ferntree Gully man charged with head butting police officer. The father of Greater Western Sydney player Toby Greene has been charged with head butting a female officer while being escorted from the MCG during yesterday's grand final. Toby Greene's father, was remanded in custody and is expected to face a hearing at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court today. The 59-year-old Ferntree Gully man allegedly assaulted the officer after apparently being found alcohol-affected in an MCG toilet just after 5pm. Police responded to reports of a man allegedly alcohol affected in the bathrooms. While being escorted from the ground it is alleged he head-butted a female police officer. He was interviewed last night and remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 29 September, charged with intentionally cause injury, resist police and assault police. He will reappear in court on Wednesday.

Natasha Laurie with her boys, Finn, Spencer, and her youngest Angus. After an extended wait at Angliss Hospital Tash is organising a fundraiser to get entertainment equipment to help soothe, distract and occupy sick and injured kids during their hospital stays. but I think it's time there's a bit more support for our local hospital. "Toys are going to be pretty far down on the priority list and that's why I thought if we could get $2000 together just for entertainment - some chargers and some Ipads - it would make those visits a lot easier." To support the hospital Ms Laurie has organised a 12km walk from Emerald to Gembrook on 12 October. Tickets cost $40 and al the money raised will be donated to the Angliss Hospital.

"We're walking 12km from Emerald to Gembrook to raise money for entertainment equipment to help soothe, distract and occupy sick and injured kids during their hospital stays." "The Angliss Hospital Paediatric Ward do an incredible job for our families when we need it most. However, some of the facilities don't quite match the amazing work of the staff." forts and save Yarra Ranges residents money. "We're thrilled to be receiving this funding from the Federal Government, which will allow us to make a large dent in our vast network of unsealed roads," he said. "A fantastic benefit of this program is that Council committed to fixing the landowner contribution for the special charge schemes on these roads to $7000 per development unit, which is significantly lower than if a road were to be sealed outside of this Federal Government program." The ramp-up in road sealing efforts comes after the Yarra Ranges Council received $150 million in federal funding to seal roads within the Dandenong Ranges and surrounding areas. As part of the funding, the council is required to construct unmade roads that service schools and community facilities, are within heavily urbanised regions, support bushfire risk and emergency situations and support growth and tourism. According to Yarra Ranges Council, there is about 730km of unsealed roads across the re-

gion, with 200km of those within urban areas. Casey MP Tony Smith said that without the funding, thousands of residents would not have seen their roads sealed. "The $150 million I pledged before the election to seal local dirt roads is being delivered in full and on schedule," he said. "It is a massive win for our community. "As Council utilises this significant funding it will end the days of dust and potholes for so many residents. It will improve liveability and safety. "With over 700kms of dirt roads in Yarra Ranges, this funding won't seal every road. Council will continue to use their annual Roads to Recovery funding to undertake other upgrade projects." Now that priority roads have been determined, the council said it will hold a community consultation process to give relevant landowners the chance to accept or reject the proposals. To find out more about the list of priority roads visit www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au.

Olinda Police are seeking the owner of a large four-wheel-drive tyre that fell of the back of a land cruiser on 10 September. Police told the Mail that the BF Goodrich mud tyre came off the car in the main street of Olinda at 2:30pm on 10 September. Olinda Police are also seeking the owner of a lost engagement ring. The engagement ring was found in the female toilets at Wall Tew Reserve in Ferntree Gully on 18 September. The ring is described as rose gold with small stones inlayed into the ring. If this ring is yours contact Sgt Herdman at Olinda Police on 9751 1241.

Police disappointed by results of road operation. Drink and drug drivers have been a headache for Yarra Ranges highway patrol this long weekend as police cracked down on impaired and dangerous driving. For the Yarra Ranges highway patrol, driver behaviour had been good overall but there were plenty of concerns that people were not obeying the road rules. Overall, Police detected 110 offences in the Yarra Ranges. Over the four days, police issued fines to nine people who were caught drink driving and another eight with drugs. As part of the four-day operation, police cracked down heavily on driver impairment, particularly drink and drug driving, speed, distraction, mobile phone use, seat belt offences and driver fatigue. The operation has run from Thursday to midnight Sunday.

Probiotics can be excellent for your health, but they may be the last thing you actually need. When it comes to fixing your digestive problems it's likely there are other priorities to address first before taking probiotics. My patients make great healthy choices that enhance their wellbeing. When it comes to buying probiotics or any supplement for that matter it's important to ask yourself a few questions. 1. Do I need it? 2. Is it going to give me the results I desire? 2. What type should I get?

tine needs to optimal and metabolite production in the large bowel provides a feedback loop to your brain which helps regulate immune, energy, detoxification and other key functions. Probiotics affect that last aspect, and if there are issues further upstream that have not been resolved it is unlikely they will provide relief. Start with your diet and begin with paying attention to what you eat, how you eat and when you eat. Developing mindfulness around what goes in your mouth can be enlightening. Keep a diet and symptom log that helps you connect how you feel, how you sleep, what your moods are like if your allergies improve or get worse with the foods you are eating. Then seek out a qualified health professional to evaluate all the components of your digestive system and design an appropriate course of action that may or may not include probiotic therapy in. I guarantee that working this way will yield you great results.

3. Is it going to suit my individual needs? New patients arrive and tell me they have been taking probiotics and still feel unwell. The gut can suffer collateral damage for many reasons including poor diet, prolonged stress, medications, illness, time in hospital and C-Section birth. I frequently help patients repair their digestive system and I do so in a very particular manner because there are typical issues like toxicity, inflammation, poor absorption and germ overgrowth that can not be corrected with stand-alone probiotic treatment. Until gut health is returned to a state of balance, popping probiotics is like thrown lawn seed onto a weed-covered, desiccated patch of earth. It's unlikely to give you the beautiful results displayed on the packet. How to work out what your gut needs can be overwhelming. The digestive system should be treated as a whole but evaluated in key sections. Stomach acid and digestive enzymes need to be adequate, absorption in the small intes-

Fund of memories By Mitchell Clarke Twenty-three-year-old Cassandra Emary was doing exactly what she loved when she passed away in Nepal in November last year. Shortly after returning from Argentina where she represented Australia in the R4 Rafting Championships, the Gembrook woman died while kayaking in her favourite country. Remembered as courageous, focused and passionate about inspiring and educating others in adventure sports, travel and the environment, Ms Emary wasn't afraid of dying, instead she was afraid of not living. This outlook on life inspired her parents, Sue and Colin, to continue her legacy by creating the Cassanga Fund, a platform which aims to turn her dreams into a reality. The Cassanga Funds mission is to support

and promote unity and genuine inclusion of women in the outdoor sports and the eco adventure community around the globe, with a vision of creating two sister schools in Australia and Nepal. Coinciding with what would be Cassandra's 24th birthday, the Cassanga Fund is set to officially launch during a Gala Dinner Fundraiser on Saturday 5 October from 6.30pm at the Independent Restaurant in Gembrook. The fundraiser dinner includes a chef's selection of modern Argentinian cuisine with guest speakers, entertainment, raffles and auctions on offer. All money raised from the event will be donated to the Australian Communities Foundation/Cassanga Fund. To book, contact the restaurant on 5968 1110.

Ambulance Victoria gift Cassandra Emary managed to fit a lot in during her 23 years on earth.

Council declares climate emergency By Mitchell Clarke Cardinia Shire Council has joined a growing list of other councils by declaring a climate emergency. Councillor Michael Schilling moved the motion to enhance council's already "progressive" climate change targets by calling for funding to a climate action plan in the 2020-21 budget cycle, with a focus on climate change adaptation and mitigation. "You don't have to delve far into the literature to see the dramatic impact climate change is having both locally and globally," Cr Schilling said. Gaining the support of his fellow councillors, Cr Schilling's action plan is set to come at a cost of approximately $40,000 and will work towards creating measurable outcomes and actions to help the community respond

to extreme weather events like fire and floods which are prominent in Cardinia due to the diverse landscape. "We know we are prone to these extreme weather events," he said. "We need to be able to look in the eyes of our families, friends and communities and say as councillors we did our best to protect our future. Ensuring a safe climate is everyone's business." The South East Climate Action Network (SECAN) welcomed the announcement after 75 residents attended a public screening of the award winning documentary '2040' on Friday 13 September. The documentary highlights the journey of filmmaker Damon Gameau as he travels the world to search for new approaches and solutions to global warming.

"There's huge community support for Cardinia Shire Council to acknowledge the climate crisis, and act urgently to protect our future," SECAN co-founder Jamie Longmuir said. "This is the first step. Now our community and council need to work together to urgently address the climate crisis." But not everyone is on board, claiming it's not an issue for council to tackle, rather they should stick to "repairing roads and collecting rates". "Some might say our advocacy on this issue is only a small drop in the ocean and won't result in any net change," Cr Schilling said. "I would argue the benefits of collective advocacy across government, not-for-profit and private industry will be instrumental in ensuring we're able to lobby for effective climate action."

By Derek Schlennstedt Ambulance Victoria has welcomed the generosity of The Emerald and District Ambulance Auxiliary, following their donation of a 'Resusci-Anne' manikin. Recognising the need for paramedics to continually practice and refresh their techniques and procedures, the Auxiliary donated in excess of $14,000 which covered the cost of an adult-size manikin. Emerald Team Manager Sharon Haslam said equipment like the 'Resusci-Anne' ensures the skills of paramedics are as up-to-date as possible, and assist in maintaining performance standards. "Using the 'Resusci-Anne' ensures crews are well-equipped as they serve the sick and injured in the community," Ms Haslam said. Ms Haslam said the donation is a great example of community groups and Ambulance Victoria working together to benefit the community. "We are extremely appreciative of the support from the Emerald and District Ambulance Auxiliary, and the wider community who will benefit from this donation."

SELLING a house can be a stressful and difficult task, especially if the interior styling isn't up to scratch. The team at Staged Homes offers home staging and property styling services that they say can add real value to the sale price of a home and reduce time on the market. Staged Homes is based in Ferntree Gully offering services to vendors, developers and real estate agents throughout the entire Melbourne region. The company offers full and partial staging so customers can either have their house completely restyled or retain some of the existing furniture. It was founded just over 16 years ago by Katrina Maes and is now ranked by Domain.com.au as Top 3 best property stagers in Melbourne. Staged Homes staging and stylist consultant Chrissie Bosua said home staging can give those looking to sell a home the upper hand. “Styling and staging a home and preparing it for sale helps give you an edge online in the market,“ she said. “It helps your property stand out above others.“ “Appealing to many different buyers is very important.”Chrissie said Staged Homes stylists will work with vendors to find out exactly what they need and how best to present the property offering advice to improve the overall look & feel of the home. She added the entire team works together to produce rewarding results. “Getting that phone call or that email saying oh my gosh we’ve sold and it’s been an amazing result.“ “We've had such good feedback whether it be from vendor or agents.“ To find out more about Staged Homes visit www.stagedhomes.com.au or call 1300 719 280.

No mountain tough enough By Romy Stephens The moment Nick Whiley realised he had reached the peak of one of the world’s most famous mountains, he was overwhelmed with a sense of euphoria. “I just burst into tears,” Nick said. “It was huge, I spent so long training for it. It was pretty amazing.” In August this year, the Emerald CFA firefighter achieved a lifelong dream by conquering the iconic Matterhorn mountain in Switzerland. After many years of training, seven and a half hours climbing and countless hours preparing, Nick achieved something most people could only dream of. But he said the feat was far from smooth sailing. “It was a big decision. Even up until the two days before it I didn’t know if I was going to be able to do it,” he said. “It’s just such an intimidating mountain.” Nick fell in love with climbing three and a half years ago when on a photography tour of Mount Blanc in Europe with some friends. At the time, he had just been through a bad break up and was struggling with his mental health. “We caught a cable car over the mountain... We saw some mountaineers,” he recalled. “Me and a mate that I’d met on that trip were just amazed. These people were out in negative whatever degrees. “They just seemed amazing, they were just living that lifestyle travelling around the world to climb. “When we got back we thought, why not have a go and did a single day course in the Grampians and got hooked.” That moment completely turned Nick’s life around.

Nick at the top of the Matterhorn. He now climbs three to four days a week and has set up a gym at home to maintain his fitness. “It was that second that really changed everything and now it is my whole life,” he said. Over the past few years, Nick has tackled numerous mountains including Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Russia. He said he also tries to explore peaks across Victoria when possible, considering it’s so close to home. “Climbing is such an international sport and plane travel is so ecologically awful that you should be trying to make your own area good,” he said. But Nick admitted Australia doesn’t quite compare with the likes of some of the most famous international mountain ranges. Like many alpine enthusiasts, he couldn’t help but be fascinated by the beauty of Europe’s most iconic peak.

“The Matterhorn was a good challenge for me it’s such a beautiful mountain, it’s the mountain that you know,” he said. “As I got a bit better at climbing and started to get into the realms of maybe being able to do it, it got more and more appealing to me. “It took about six months to get up to actually being able to do it.” The Matterhorn is famously known for its 4478m high near-symmetrical pyramidal peak that towers above other mountains in the Monte Rosa area of the Pennine Alps. Also known as the Jewel of the Swiss Alps, the most famous mountain in Europe is best described as a single cragged rock tooth that looms breathtakingly over the Swiss Alps. Nick said during the seven and a half hour journey he had to battle changing weather conditions and difficulties functioning with higher altitude. “You start at three in the morning. The first few hours are just dark and confusing,” he explained. “As the sun rises you get to this hut. Then you start the harder bit which is more ascent.” Nick recalls starting to get headaches as the oxygen began to thin out and worsening weather kicked in. “You just kind of drill in because by that stage we were at altitude,” he said. “Then at some point on the shoulder when the weather got bad, we put on our crampons. “Towards the top, I actually didn’t realise we were at the top because it was whited out so you could only see a metre or so in front of you.” It’s estimated more than 500 people have died trying to climb or descend the Matterhorn since it was first scaled in 1865, making it one of the most dangerous mountains in the world. But Nick said he wasn’t scared by the

thought of people dying on the mountain before him. “Someone had died the week before I went,” he said. “A chunk of the wall fell out, so you could be the best climber in the world and not survive that. “It’s something that you keep aware of but early on someone said to me, don’t fear the mountains just respect them. “I don’t tend to get too scared when I’m climbing. You put that trust in your training and what you’re doing.” Nick’s ability to tackle life-threatening situations is reflected often in his life with two of the things he does outside of full-time work being firefighting and mountain climbing. He said there are numerous similarities between the two, but also some significant differences. “It’s similar in that you train for a thing and you go to it and your adrenaline’s pumping and it’s pretty intense,” he explained. “But then the muscle memory and the knowledge and the training comes in. “The risk of dying is certainly much higher mountain-climbing than it is firefighting. “CFA is so much about protecting its people and the community, whereas mountain climbing you’re protecting yourself.” His newfound love for climbing and involvement in the brigade have been major turning points in Nick’s life. Both have not only improved his physical health but also his mental health with the support of newfound friends at the brigade and within climbing groups. For more information about how to become involved in the Emerald Fire Brigade, visit the brigade’s Facebook page or https:// www.emeraldfirebrigade.org.au/.

ENTERTAINMENT Q&A What is something people don't know about you? My parents had eight children, of which I'm number six What has been your most memorable moment? Having a child. What event, past or present or future would you like to witness? Grandchildren. Where did the idea for the tulip festival start? It actually started by accident! My grandparents were growing tulips in the flower fields by the road side and passersby's would stop to take a look at the gorgeous display. The crowds got so big that by 1954 they decided rather than ask the tourists to leave; they would ask them for a donation to the red cross. From where do you source your flowers? Our fields of tulips are grown from our own tulip bulbs. To keep our stock of bulbs fresh and clean from virus, we purchase a small percentage of new tulip bulbs every year from the Broersen family. Broersen are our long standing neighbours who also grow tulips. What are you working on right now? My job is to make sure every visitor to the Tulip festival has a wonderful day. From where did you gain your knowledge of tulips and flowers? You don't grow up on a flower farm without learning a few things along the way. How do you ensure your tulips flower at the same time every year? In our area of the hills, tulips naturally flower from mid September until mid October. Predicting what exact day is an impossible task because you are at the mercy of the weather. We have many varieties on display; some of them flower early in the season, some mid and some late in the season. What is your favourite flower? Tulips!

Traders dig deep for fun By Derek Schlennstedt Goblins, ghouls and ghosts are invited to "show off their scary" at the Halloween on the Green event in Ferny Creek on Saturday 26 October. The 2019 best-dressed competition is gearing up to be another year of creative spectacle as the organizers have gone all out to bring the biggest hills prize pool to the competition ever. A combined $4000 dollars of vouchers and gifts is up for grabs said organiser Andrew Filip-Gautier. "We are looking forward to the creativity of the community with an emphasis on handmade costumes and culturally themed costumes. In almost every culture there is a belief that the dead should be honoured from All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day to the Mexican cousin of, Los Dias de los Muertos. " Mr FillipGautier said. There are two categories for the bestdressed competition, with best handmade costume requiring the costume to be made at home and by the makers own efforts.

BEECHWORTH BAKERY BIRTHDAY FEATURE

That’s country hospitality Nothing says welcome quite like the smell of fresh baked goods mingling with the aroma of great coffee. Throw in warm smiles that greet you from behind the counter, a relaxed atmosphere and the promise of an endless cup of tea, and you have country hospitality at its best. This year Beechworth Bakery is celebrating 13 years in Healesville, having opened in September 2006 with the aim to bring a muchloved brand, delicious products and amazing customer service, to the people of the Yarra Valley. Beechworth Bakery's Healesville manager, Kylie Bray, said the bakery benefits its customers with a terrific product range and a loyalty card that helps them save money. "Our main products and services are our huge range of yummy pies, scrumptious cakes, great coffee and other beverages, and fresh food options from our salad bar," she said. "While we know we have great product, it is actually our people that make the Beechworth Bakery so special. "More and more people are looking not just for a purchase but for an experience, and we love nothing better than to provide an experience for our customers that will have them walk away smiling. "Our birthday week gives us the chance to not only thank our community and customers, but also go all out and really ramp up the fun." From 7 to 13 October, visitors can make the most of the bakery's famous 10 cent pie sale. Whenever a Beechworth Steak Pie is purchased, customers can get a second one the same for just 10 cents. But visitors can still head into the bakery any day of the week to choose from the wide range of baked goods.

The bakery claims its products are baked fresh, using the finest ingredients and traditional recipes, meaning sweet and savoury goods proudly retain their old world charm. "We like to keep it real and simple," Ms Bray said. "We pride ourselves on making all our products in the traditional way - by hand, with dedication and love. "This means a lot of hard work, but we be-

lieve it's worth it because you can taste the difference." Beechworth Bakery is a family-owned business with nine stores located in regional towns across Victoria, which have all been specifically chosen for their scenic beauty and historical background. Beechworth Bakery's managing director, Marty Matassoni said the company is not a franchise nor "some mega-brand funnelling money out of the community."

"We love getting involved in community initiatives in all our locations, and regularly contribute sponsorships and donations to local organisations and sports groups wherever we are." Beechworth Bakery also continuously works on its green credentials, striving to do its best to reduce waste. The bakery has banned plastic straws and also offers discounts to customers that bring their own cup.

LOOK GOOD, FEEL GREAT

Girls night for good cause Females across the country are being encouraged to host a girls night event this October, to support local women diagnosed with breast or gynaecological cancer. The Girls’ Night In campaign, hosted by the Cancer Council, sees females invite other women over for a night and asks them to donate what they would usually spend on a night out. The organisation claimed that all funds raised go towards its work in vital research, prevention and support services for women’s cancers. Cancer Council Victoria’s head of community engagement Lyrian Fleming-Parsley said getting involved in the campaign will not only help raise money but also awareness. “Breast and gynaecological cancers touch many lives in one form or another,” she said. “Hosting or attending a Girls’ Night In event isn’t only an opportunity to raise muchneeded funds for women’s cancers, it can also raise much-needed awareness about early detection and cancer prevention. “A third of cancers can be prevented by making healthy lifestyle choices and taking part in the recommended screening programs for your age-group. “Getting together with the girls and starting these conversations is a great way to spread awareness and perhaps change someone’s life.” Ms Fleming-Parsley said hosts can make their event as big or as small as they like ? a casual dinner party, a dress-up movie night, a pampering session. “The possibilities are endless and any event you host will help support women affected by breast or gynaecological cancer,” she said.

She added that it’s campaigns like this that can help save lives. “Thanks to advancements in prevention, detection and treatment, women diagnosed

with breast cancer now have a 91 per cent chance of surviving for five years. “These improvements are thanks to investment in research, prevention and support

because of fundraisers like Girls’ Night In.” To register to host a Girls’ Night in, visit www.girlsnightin.com.au or call 1300 65 65 85.

CHARACTER, CHARM IN TOP SPOT IT’S not often you find such a fine example of a hills home still featuring many original character features, such as an ornate ceiling rose in the dining room with original windows and fireplaces converted to gas. Adding to the charm of a bygone era are a wood heater, picture and plate rails and embossed wallpaper. The house over time has been extended to four bedrooms, living zones and a beautiful sunroom, a great spot to read a book or two on a winters’ day. The large family room at the rear is situated to take in views across the stunning backyard, where the odd echidna, lyrebird or tame king parrots can be seen visiting. Why not meander through the 3000m2 approx of stunning gardens consisting of sculptured English box, camellias daffodils, blue bells and mature lemonade trees? A host of other fruit trees plus beautiful copper beech and giant liquid amber really make

this a special garden. Cross the stone bridge at the rear of the property and listen to the sound of frogs in your very own frog pond. A separate character cottage with its own access is ideal as a teenage retreat, in-laws, guest accommodation or a fantastic home office. All this and more situated on one of the best streets in the Dandenong Ranges. It’s only a short stroll to the bus stop, a 10-minute drive to Upper Ferntree Gully train station and there are fantastic choices of local schools just minutes away. Other additions complete this superb property, a fully fenced near flat yard, sealed bluestone lined driveway, carport, ducted heating, Miele dishwasher and a lifestyle many just dream about. ENTERTAINMENT

Sherbrook art fest By Derek Schlennstedt The Sherbrooke Art Society, now in its 52nd year has announced their annual spring exhibition. The exhibition will run until 26 October and features a vast range of art created by the societies' members. President Antoinette Blyth said the exhibition was one of the longest continuous annual art events in the Dandenong Ranges region, and on average, has over 60 artists exhibiting over 130 works of art. "The spring exhibition is a yearly function for the members of the Sherbrooke Art Society and gives them the opportunity to enter up to three works for this very valuable award," she said. "There are a very high percentage of beautiful artists who have been members for many years and some young emerging artists who are submitting using new mediums." "Art is progressing in the world and we have such a range of talent in old forms and new mediums." Open to Sherbrooke Art Society Members, the exhibition awards prizes for best oil painting, best watercolour painting, best three-dimensional work, and best pastel and acrylic work. Additionally, the best in show will receive the prestigious Mavis Hill Award. The exhibition is held at Sherbrooke Art Society located at 62 Monbulk Road, Belgrave and is free entry. Ms Blyth welcomed people to come and admire the work of local artists. "Everyone here is extremely supportive and we're always welcoming new members." "We've got a large membership that encompasses the society as their own and are very supportive in working together."

The dead don’t do this The Dead Don't Die Starring Adam Driver, Bill Murray and Chloe Sevigny Rated MA15+

From left, Glenda Van Trojen (vice-president), Wendy Havard (artist, her work is on the wall left) and Antoinette Blyth (president). The sculpture is by John Vander Werf called "Spring Arrival". 198307

The Dead Don't Die is American auteur Jim Jarmusch's fun but stumbling take on a zombie film. After polar fracking causes the Earth's axis to shift, the dead rise from their graves in the quiet town of Centreville. The Dead Don't Die is an amusing but mostly-unsuccessful experiment in genre and atmosphere. The deadpan performances, hammy dialogue and frequent coincidences generate an intriguing surreal feel early on, both parodying the film's B-movie roots and delivering some clever winks to the audience. The film also plays with contrast, juxtaposing the flat tone with graphic scenes of zombie violence. However, these quirky effects steadily wear out, exposing the film's severe lack of energy. Even with ravenous undead hordes prowling the town, the film feels limp and tedious, as the characters rarely feel invested in or affected by what's happening around them. Moreover, a late revelation about the nature of the film's world further erodes any sense of tension from the narrative. Jarmusch's previous supernatural film, Only Lovers Left Alive, is far superior: it has a similar low-key vibe and slow pacing, but it's heartbreakingly poignant, genuinely suspenseful and delves far deeper into its vampire main characters. While admirable and well-produced, The Dead Don't Die goes beyond a deadpan zombie comedy and ends up aimless and bland. - Seth Lukas Hynes
