is warranted.” Ms Rogerson has filed an appeal against the Ombudsman’s assessment, alleging a “number of errors” in the investigation. Mr Cook said the council had at least a perceived conflict of interest in “completely destroying” his business. iCook Foods was the greatest commercial rival of Community Chef - a Meals on Wheels kitchen part-owned by Greater Dandenong, Mr Cook said. After the court hearing, Greater Dandenong Council acting chief executive Jody Bosman said “both parties have agreed to go forward on a mutually non-disparaging basis”. iCook Foods had “invested in bringing their premises into compliance with the Food Act”, Mr Bosman said. “After discussion between the two parties and noting their compliance, Council will not be proceeding with the prosecution of this matter under the Food Act.”

Commercial caterer iCook Foods is set to pursue a multi-million-dollar lawsuit after Greater Dandenong Council sensationally dropped all 96 food safety charges levelled against the company. Its executive director Ian Cook says the Dandenong South company was wrongfully ruined when it was shut down by authorities for 36 days and blamed for the listeria-related death of an elderly hospital patient in February. He and the business are now pursuing a Supreme Court lawsuit of at least $26 million against the council and the Department of Health and Human Services. At a short hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 3 October, City of Greater Dandenong’s barrister withdrew all charges against the company and Mr Cook. A defence lawyer in turn withdrew Mr Cook’s list of subpoenas against the council. Among the dropped charges was an allegation that iCook Foods provided “unsuitable” vegetable satay and peanut garnish to Whitehorse Council’s meals on wheels service. Outside the courtroom, a jubilant Mr Cook shook hands with supporters. He embraced his son and general manager Ben Cook as they walked from the building. The next day, Mr Cook said he believed the council dropped the case because it was “hiding stuff in the subpoenas”. Recently, a whistle-blower and former Greater Dandenong health inspector Kim Rogerson has claimed that she was pressured to fabricate evidence against iCook Foods. The council said it had referred the matter to anti-corruption watchdog IBAC, which in turn referred the matter to the Victorian Ombudsman for an initial review. “Following that review the Ombudsman has determined that no further investigation

AFL chases old heartland By Cam Lucadou-Wells AFL Victoria is bent on reclaiming its sport's former Greater Dandenong heartland. North Dandenong Sharks Junior Football Club is currently "in recess" due to a lack of numbers but AFL Victoria says the tide is turning. About 60 kids went to a recent school holiday clinic at the Sharks' home ground at Lois Twohig Reserve in Dandenong North. In the past year, the local Auskick junior program has soared from 10 participants to about 40. Importantly, parents are also signing up to help run the junior club - which AFL Victoria hopes to resurrect next year. AFL Victoria outer south metro football development manager Gary Brown says free footy

clinics, after-school Auskick programs and multilingual fliers are part of the promotional push. For years, Aussie Rules had been the dominant sport in Dandenong - at least among its
traditional Anglo-Saxon cohort. Now AFL Victoria was "coming from a long way back", with a critical need to reach out to new and emerging communities,
Mr Brown concedes. "More than 80 per cent of people here are from a non-English speaking background. And this demographic is increasing. "That's made it more difficult." Kids are quickly impressed by the dynamic game but their parents also need to be lured to the sport, he says. "The kids are loving it - that's what I'm finding. "We ran a lot of after-school Auskick lessons. The main idea with that was to connect with the parents after school. "It gave them their first exposure to the game, and resulted in getting so many parents to come down to the (recent) clinic. "It gives us great hope to get this junior football club up and going again."
Council urges counterparts: back your neighbour By Danielle Kutchel Greater Dandenong council has used a national conference to highlight the plight of asylum seekers in the community, drawing attention to an issue affecting thousands of people around Australia. Councillor Matthew Kirwan and mayor Roz Blades represented the City of Greater Dandenong at the Australian Local Government Association's National General Assembly 2019 in Canberra. The conference provided an opportunity for local councils to network and discuss the challenges, opportunities and changes they are facing. A focus for Greater Dandenong councillors was the 'Back Your Neighbour' campaign, which the council has led since December last year.
The campaign aims to highlight the thousands of asylum seekers in local government communities that were cut off the Status Resolution Support Services (SRSS) program from August 2018, which Cr Kirwan says left many "destitute". "The SRSS program previously provided them an income of 89 percent of Newstart as well as trauma counselling. The changes last August were that any people seeking asylum and who were deemed to be 'work ready' were cut off this program, regardless of whether they had found employment or not," he said. "Only those with a major disability, major illness or who had children under six years old would be exempt." Thirty-two councils from around the country have signed on to the campaign, and with hundreds of representatives from councils
Delegates urged their counterparts to support the Back Your Neighbour campaign. across Australia at the conference, Cr Kirwan said it was an "ideal opportunity" to publicise Back Your Neighbour to the local government sector. He said the conference was an "affirmative experience", with two more councils joining the campaign since the event. A campaign review has also recently been completed.
The conference provided an opportunity to promote the message of the campaign to other local councils.

IN BRIEF
Dad faces jail for searing ‘lesson’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren father of five faces likely jail after burning his four-year-old adopted son's genitals to teach him a lesson. The boy, who was naked after taking a shower, started lighting up a hand-held gas lighter in the kitchen, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard. The accused man, who was cooking rice at the time, took the lighter wand and touched its still-hot tip on the boy's genitals four times. Each searing caused the boy to scream with pain, the court was told. His injuries were discovered by staff at a child-care centre after the boy complained of a "sore bottom". His mother was alerted by staff that day. The boy was taken to hospital only after Department of Health and Human Services officers and police attended that evening. Under direction of the DHHS, the accused
man has since agreed to live apart from the family, the court was told. On his arrest, the man told police that he didn't think the lighter was "that hot" and didn't realise the boy was injured. He thought his son had screamed out of fear, the court heard. "I tried to make him scared of the lighter," he told police. "I tried to teach him (it was) no good. The lighter wasn't on." A defence lawyer said the "devoted" father's attempts to teach the boy a lesson went "horribly wrong". "He's expressed that he's horrified by what happened and that he loves the little boy." The accused had since enrolled in a men's behaviour change group and psychological counselling. The court was presented with character references from his church's pastor and a
work colleague. Magistrate Tara Hartnett said she was concerned that the man would target "that particular area of a four-year-old body". It would cause "maximum discomfort even if not hot", with the injuries being instantly visible, Ms Hartnett said. Ms Hartnett noted the "highly regarded" man had no prior convictions and good rehabilitative prospects but the gravity of offending called for a jail term. "This is a serious assault on a four-year-old child where your client is essentially the father role and in cirucmstances where there are multiple individual injuries." Ms Hartnett indicated that the man would be jailed for three months followed by a community corrections order. The man was to be be sentenced at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 7 October, pending a community corrections assessment.
Senior fights off bag snatcher Police have released vision of a suspect bag snatcher who was thwarted by his 76-year-old victim in Dandenong. A Doveton woman was in the frozen food section of Woolworths supermarket in Armada Dandenong Plaza when a man grabbed her hand bag out of her shopping trolley shortly before 9.15am on 10 September. The victim grabbed the bag back and a struggle ensued. The man fled the scene empty handed. As a result of the incident the victim suffered soreness and bruising to her hand, police say. The matter was reported to police on 12 September. The would-be thief was described as 170 centimetres, slim build and wearing a dark jumper and pants. Greater Dandenong CIU detectives are investigating. Anyone with information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
Teens arrested following robbery Police have arrested four teenagers on Monday 30 September after executing warrants at various addresses including Lyndhurst following an alleged robbery and attempted robbery in Dandenong South. Police allege an attempted robbery occurred on Hammond Road on a male and then a short time later a man was robbed and assaulted about 12.30am on 21 September. Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit detectives with the assistance of Casey Crime Investigation Unit executed warrants at addresses in Springvale, Lyndhurst, Endeavour Hills and Dandenong. Four teenage males were arrested and items stolen from the victim were seized. A 16-year-old Endeavour Hills boy was charged with robbery, attempted robbery, intentionally cause injury and commit indictable offences while on bail. A 17-year-old Springvale boy was charged with robbery, attempted robbery and intentionally cause injury. They will both appear at a children’s court. Two 18-year-old males were also charged with robbery, attempted robbery and intentionally cause injury. They will both appear before Dandenong Magistrates’ Court.

Rail bridge over Hallam Road businesses, the Government argues. The rail bridge design also includes improved cycling and pedestrian links. Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said the project would “get people home sooner and safer in one of the fastest growing communities. “We’re removing 17 level crossings on the Pakenham line, transforming travel in the south-east.” About 20,000 vehicles currently use the crossing each day. The boom gates are closed
for more than 40 minutes during the two-hour morning peak. Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said there was a need for better flowing roads “that are fit for purpose”. He also welcomed “critical upgrades” of Hallam Road, including two new lanes between Ormond Road and South Gippsland Highway, and new traffic lights at the intersection of South Gippsland Highway and Evans Road. Works on the project are expected to start in 2020, with a 2022 completion date.

A rail bridge and elevated train station have been chosen as the design for Hallam Road level crossing’s removal. According to the State Government, the rail bridge was chosen to minimise disruption to road and rail users, as well as to allow Hallam Road to be widened in the future. Other designs such as a rail-under-road concept was ruled out due to the high-water table, increased flood risk and impacts to the Hallam Main Drain. Alternatives would take 12 months longer to build and require compulsory acquisition of
A man has been charged with armed robbery and assault over an alleged hold-up at an ATM in Dandenong. Greater Dandenong CIU detectives arrested the Pakenham man in Dandenong on Wednesday 2 October. Police later raided a property in Coleman Court, Dandenong North. The man is accused of threatening a 19-year-old male and attempting to force him to withdraw money from an ATM on Stud Road in September. He then allegedly assaulted the victim and stole a phone and other personal items. The victim was hospitalised with minor injuries. The charged man is expected to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Thursday 3 October.

Floods of relief at pool By Danielle Kutchel A group of Dandenong Oasis swimmers who took on the council over its proposed redevelopment of the facility are elated and relieved after securing a 50 metre lap pool into the future. Council officers had recommended that the slated rebuild of the ageing Dandenong Oasis centre include a 25 metre lap pool instead of the current 50 metre facility. But the swimmers weren't impressed with the recommendation. Spearheaded by Jessica Hong, they put together a petition signed by more than 760 people and presented it to council in August. The proposal was put to a vote at the council meeting on Monday 23 September, where councillors voted unanimously to keep a 50 metre pool at Oasis. According to the council's Aquatic Strategy, a new multipurpose aquatic and leisure facility will be constructed at Mills Reserve to replace Oasis. This centre will include a 50 metre, eight lane pool with a moveable boom or swim wall, so that the lap pool can be utilised as two 25
metre pools if needed. Ms Hong said the group was excited that they had been listened to, and said they "couldn't have achieved it" without the support of Cr Maria Sampey, who championed their cause. At a meeting between the group and Cr Sampey, some users expressed concerns that the boom would be in place for too long during pool opening times, potentially restricting the 50 metre facility. However, Cr Sampey reassured the group that that would not happen. "If we find that games are being played and they're making it hard for the residents, we councillors will get involved because they're running it for us," she said. "So down the track, the residents need to notify us councillors and it will be sorted out." Opened in 1977, Dandenong Oasis has undergone several renovations over its history, the most recent in 2003. The pool users were elated when council voted to keep a 50 metre pool at Dandenong Oasis. 198424
Big plans for swimming as NPAC’s future mapped Noble Park Aquatic Centre's 50-metre outdoor pool will be retained by Greater Dandenong Council - at least in the medium term. The council has committed to an estimated $20.7 million redevelopment of NPAC as part
of its recently adopted aquatic strategy. It includes plans for an expanded indoor pool hall, a dedicated learn-to-swim pool, a gym, better accessible change rooms and a spa, sauna and steam room.
Under the proposal, its water play area would be enclosed. The council will also investigate the enclosure of the outdoor 50 metre pool as a longterm option.
Greater Dandenong Council also identified that NPAC's focus would be on recreation, fitness, swim carnivals and summer activities. A time line has not been set for the project.

More peace in our homes By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong has recorded a second consecutive annual drop in reported family violence, defying a massive statewide rise. According to official crime statistics, reported incidents in Greater Dandenong dropped by 3 per cent per capita in the 2018-19 financial year. The year before, the rate plunged by 5 per cent. The apparent tail-off comes after three consecutive years of steep rises. The sobering fact remains that there were 2391 reported incidents in the last 12-month recording period. Nearly 200 a month, and more than six a day. And much more than the number of reported assaults (1725) and burglaries (1268) in the same period. The Dandenong result is very much an outlier. Across Victoria, family violence continued to rise - up 8.6 per cent to 82,652 incidents. Even in the Southern Metro region overall, reports were up 4.9 per cent. Neighbouring council areas Monash (up 9 per cent), Kingston (7 per cent) and Cardinia Shire (18 per cent) were among the steepest increases. Prevention of Family Violence Minister Gabrielle Williams described Dandenong's result as a "small decrease" - and still up compared to five years ago. At the same time, reports have increased in the rest of the state due to a "dedicated police focus and increased community awareness".
“
The increased discussion ... means that more people are coming forward and talking about their experiences… Gabrielle Williams
Ms Williams, also the MP for Dandenong, said the state was implementing "world leading reform" after a Royal Commission into family violence. "But the increased discussion about family violence means that more people are coming forward and talking about their experiences." Some of the reforms have included making it easier for victims to apply for family violence intervention orders and more support for them through the court process. One factor may be the 'fast track' system pioneered at Dandenong Magistrates' Court in late 2014 may be starting to make a difference. The system, developed with Victoria Police, was designed to bring perpetrators to court faster, often via the police cells. It was hoped that the 'wake-up calls' to offenders would reduce recidivism. Thirty-three family violence specialist police have also been allocated to the Dandenong region.

$8700 was ‘pokies win’ By Cam Lucadou-Wells A convicted drug trafficker allegedly found with more than $8700 and large amounts of suspected drugs in his car has claimed he'd won the money on the pokies, a court bail hearing heard. Kyaw Zay Tun, of Springvale South, had been in custody since being intercepted in a silver Camry by police in Noble Park on 30 August. Police seized $1700 on Tun's person, a further $7055 from a satchel in the car, as well as 14 Viagra tablets, 50 mL of allegedly GHB and 44 grams of allegedly ephedrine, police told Dandenong Magistrates' Court. Tun allegedly told police at the time that he'd won the money from the pokies, and liked to carry cash. He believed the drugs found in the car boot were "sugar", the court heard. Tun was charged with trafficking GHB and ephedrine, possessing proceeds of crime and possessing a drug of dependence in Viagra. In arguing for bail, defence lawyer Adrian Dessi told the court that Tun's partner purportedly uploaded photos of winning pokie machines from Tun's phone to support the claim. It was difficult for Tun to substantiate his defence while in custody, Mr Dessi said. Police remand liaison officer Sergeant Chris Marlow told the court he didn't accept the photos on face value. He'd seen apparent drug users taking pictures of other people's winning machines at pokies venues.
A police prosecutor added that the photos appeared to have been taken three months prior to Tun's arrest. At the time, Tun was on a two-year community corrections order for charges including trafficking heroin, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard. He was also arrested under an outstanding warrant for charges of possessing heroin and cannabis and a Taser at his home in December, and faces a drug-driving charge from May. At the 1 October hearing, magistrate Sharon McRae granted bail, noting that Tun had proven "exceptional circumstances". Tun had allegedly offended while on the corrections order but had no prior convictions for failing to appear on bail or offending while on bail, Ms McRae noted. Tun was not yet charged with breaching his corrections order, she added. The applicant also faced lengthy delays in custody while awaiting police analysis of the alleged drugs or Tun's phone. Tun was bailed to report to police three times a week and subject to a night curfew. His conditions include not driving, not using drugs and not leaving Victoria. Twin towers site revealed By Cam Lucadou-Wells The site for Armada Dandenong Plaza's proposed $70 million twin apartment towers can be revealed. Concept plans show 12-storey glass towers up to 49 metres high may rise on the corner of Clow and Walker streets, opposite the Dandenong RSL. The 3901 square-metre site is occupied by an open ground level car park and a covered multi-level car park. The project, lodged with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning on 20 June, is earmarked as stage 1 of the 30-year-old shopping centre's renewal. Illustrations depict softly-rounded edged towers - one oriented east-west and the other north-south - facing down the Clow Street hill towards Dandenong Market.
They are fronted by a public plaza and garden, topped with roof terraces and solar panels. Their 211 apartments include 46 one-bedroom units, 158 two-bedroom units and seven three-bedroom units. The three-level basement car parks include 152 car spaces - 27 spaces short of the statutory car parking requirment. Being in the Revitalising Central Dandenong declared area, the project's fate will be ultimately decided by Planning Minister Richard Wynne. In the meantime, the application will be referred to City of Greater Dandenong and state agencies to comment. The application will also be open for public viewing and submissions. Armada Dandenong Plaza declined to comment.

No bail for accused By Cam Lucadou-Wells
Anna Panasewycz, Maria Hole, Jordan Stickland, Russell Slobodiuk, Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades and Father Robert Stickland ahead of the celebration. 198393 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Police argued that he had disregarded bail conditions such as a driving ban, his night curfew and to live at a fixed address. Magistrate Susan McRae said Chilcott had failed to show "exceptional circumstances" for bail, noting he was facing about 43 charges. She noted that Chilcott had allegedly committed 13 similar offences after being placed on "stringent" bail on 4 August, and had two prior convictions for failing to appear on bail. There was "too much risk" of Chilcott committing further offences or contravening bail. Chilcott was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 31 October.

His life for others By Casey Neill
Lee Tarlamis.
Lee Tarlamis says his older brother’s cancer battle inspired him to spend his life helping those less fortunate. His service culminated in a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, announced on Monday 11 June. The Noble Park man and former state Upper House MP received the nod for service to the people and Parliament of Victoria “I’m extremely humbled. It’s not something that I’d expected,” he said. “I didn’t do it to get acknowledgement. “It was about wanting to provide assistance and help to people. “It’s a view that I formed very early on.” Mr Tarlamis said his brother fought cancer for two years before dying at age 17. “The trouble and the stress that the family went through, I saw how positive he was
throughout those two years,” he said. “It instilled in me that as tough as I think I have things, there are always people out there who are doing it a lot worse than me. “That’s why I got involved in the local community.” Initially that was through the Keysborough Learning Centre. “The centre loaned me a computer for me to do my school work,” he said.

“I wanted to repay the favour so I was volunteering time with them.” There he met then-politician Eddie Micallef and became his electorate officer. “That’s how I got into the politics world,” Mr Tarlamis said. “That opened up a lot of opportunities to provide assistance to community groups.” He never intended to run for parliament, but “one thing lead to another which lead to another” and he was a South Eastern Metropolitan Region MP from 2010 to 2014. “That was such an honour as well, when you consider the fact that very few people get to hold that position and represent that large number of people,” he said. Mr Tarlamis was a Springvale Benevolent Society volunteer from 2002 to 2012, a Noble Park Community Action Forum member for many years, a founding Springvale Multicultural Men’s Shed committee member, and more.
He’s now a senior advisor to Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings. The world of politics is not where he thought he’d end up. The Tarlamis family moved from Oakleigh to Keysborough when he was eight months old. He went to Wallarano Primary School in Noble Park and to Chandler Secondary College, where Keysborough College’s Acacia campus now stands. Mr Tarlamis went on to study an associate diploma of business. “I grew up working with dad in the family businesses,” he said. “I thought it would be logical that I would go into the business world and maybe into management or something like that. “I really enjoyed the community stuff. “Politics became that vehicle to do it.”

There were no more chances for a suspended learner driver accused of continuing a string of car thefts while on bail. Mark Anthony Chilcott, 20, of Springvale South, unsuccessfully argued at a Dandenong Magistrates' Court hearing on 1 October for another round of bail to help in his grandmother's home and garden. "My grandmother can't do too much stuff around the home. "I'm happy to have a curfew, sign in five days a week if I have to." Chilcott had been arrested after having a flick-knife allegedly seized from him by court security that day. The court heard Chilcott was charged and made full admissions to stealing a Hyundai Tucson from a Dandenong home on 8 September while he was on three counts of bail. The vehicle was involved in a petrol driveoff, police told the court. It was allegedly recovered affixed with stolen number plates and three doors down from Chilcott's house on 14 September. He had been arrested three times in July and August and placed on bail each time on charges including three car thefts, petrol drive-offs, suspected stolen goods and driving offences. Among the allegations was that on 3 August, Chilcott had twice driven away at a fast speed from police trying to intercept him in a stolen VW Touareg in Noble Park and Springvale. He was allegedly involved in a petrol driveoff before being arrested that night in Dandenong North.

ANZ branch set to close By Cam Lucadou-Wells ANZ Bank has cited the popularity of online and mobile banking as the reason for shutting its Endeavour Hills branch on 20 November. It is among five branches set to close in Victoria and South Australia, including Gladstone Park, Castlemaine and Foster. Finance Sector Union regional secretary David Scanlon said it was a "disgrace that the ANZ is blaming customers for its decision". "The major banks all hide behind the excuse that the numbers of customers using the branch has fallen because they are moving to internet banking but we know that's just a fairy tale," Mr Scanlon said. "The real reason the banks close branches is because the branch is not generating enough profits for the bank." Mr Scanlon said 30 staff were affected by the closures as well as customers and local communities. The branches were among 33 closed nationally by ANZ in the past year, he said. "The ANZ is dumping these communities and walking away from its' customers and staff because it has chosen to put profits before people." He said the ANZ Bank should properly consult with its workers and the community before shutting its branches. "In most cases, no community consultation is being conducted." ANZ state general manager Michael Wake said the decisions "are never taken lightly". "They are carefully considered, taking
many factors into account including the potential impacts on our customers." An ANZ spokesperson however said the bank couldn't give specific customer numbers for the branch or "offer a view on how trade in the Endeavour Hills shopping centre will be impacted". Mr Wake said 66 per cent of Endeavour Hills branch customers prefer online and mobile banking. Just 13 per cent used the branch. "The decision has been made due to the decreasing number of customers using face-toface services in recent years, in favour of digital channels. "Transactions in the branch are declining 10 per cent year-on-year and only 16 per cent of customers used the branch for their mortgage, compared to 84 per cent via a mobile lender or mortgage broker." The nearest alternative ANZ branch is 5.7 kilometres away in Dandenong.

FOCUS ON ‌ DANDENONG PLAZA 30TH

An advertisement on the front page of the Journal on 2 September 1996.
Plaza at 30 pops the cork In 1989 residents in Greater Dandenong were treated to an early Christmas present with the opening of a local shopping centre they could call their own, today known as Armada Dandenong Plaza. On 19 and 20 October Centre Management and retailers at Armada Dandenong Plaza will be in celebration mode as the shopping centre celebrates its 30th birthday. The local community was out in force back in 1989 when the doors opened to the Capital Centre and many of those residents are still part of Armada Dandenong Plaza today. Fashion retailer Taxi Designs has been at the centre from day one. Centre cleaner Maria has worked at the plaza since 1995. Maria was initially stationed in the centre's food court where she loved watching locals spending time socialising with their families and friends. "Customers still stop me in the centre today and mention they remember seeing me working at the centre when they were children with their parents," Maria said. Saurabh Sanghani, owner/partner at Terry White Chemmart has been working at Armada Dandenong Centre for 19 years. "Working at Armada Dandenong Plaza is like being with your extended family, there are so many long term staff working at the centre, we all know each other by name and you feel like you belong here," Saurabh said. In 1995 the centre rebranded to Dandenong Plaza which saw the old Myer store and the Capital Centre incorporated into one shopping complex. At that time, the centre celebrated with Sam Newman and a cash machine where excited shoppers stepped in to try their luck at winning $100,000, this is still on YouTube today. The centre underwent a final name change to Armada Dandenong Plaza in May 2018 with a new tagline, 'We celebrate you. Always'. As Armada Dandenong Plaza approaches its 30th birthday milestone, Centre Management is bringing the community together again for a weekend of celebratory activities on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October. The YouTube worthy cash machine will be back where shoppers are invited to step in for their chance to win Armada Dandenong Plaza gift cards. Take a walk down memory lane by visiting the centre's historical commemorative display or make the most of store-wide discounts to kick start your Christmas shopping. In 30 years, Greater Dandenong and its surrounds has transformed from a regional community to bustling multicultural suburbs with a melting pot of diverse cultures, and while Armada Dandenong Plaza has undergone changes the centre has never lost its local flavour. "Our name may have changed but our commitment to the changing needs of our growing community has remained the same. We have become a destination for mini and major re10 STAR JOURNAL

Stages of grief on suicide By Cam Lucadou-Wells A play on suicide may not be 'taboo' but it certainly challenges and discomforts people, says writer Rebecca Lister. "But on one level that's the role of art to provoke, to challenge, to stimulate," the award-winning playwright says of her latest work 2:20AM. "Whilst those moments do happen, there are also moments of beauty and comedy and things people can relate to." The "make-believe world" of theatre is a great forum to express difficult themes - and to break down the stigma of being bereaved by suicide, Lister says. "When you shut down the conversation of suicide it actually makes it worse. People are then more ashamed and more frightened to share their feelings." The play deeply mines Lister's experience as a trained social worker and teacher of a Support After Suicide creative writing class for people bereaved by suicide. There's more than a ring of truth about it - being developed from interviews with her class participants. The play is set in such a writing class. Twenty-five years ago, Lister's eldest brother Michael took his own life at 43. What strikes her is many who are bereaved, like herself and her students, are "normal" people. "It affects anyone regardless of their socioeconomic status, background, age or gender. "When people get to see these characters they think they could be me. They are just ordinary people living their lives, yet these things happen. "It doesn't just happen to 'bad' people, it happens to all people." She says her writing workshops aren't designed to be "therapeutic" or a "support group" but focus on writing skills. "We talk about how to write about their ex-

"But of course the medium (of writing) is extremely therapeutic. Lister says 2:20AM stands up as a piece of great theatre engaging to all play lovers. "I've been fortunate with this particular
production. It has a fantastic cast and fantastic director who understands the work. "It's not yelling at the audience, it's quite subtle. "I hope people can take away that it's OK to talk about suicide." 2:20AM is at Walker Street Gallery and Arts

Worlds of foods, music and art Foods, fashion parades, music, dance and a Dandy's Got Talent show highlight the second annual Unity in Diversity Festival. Set at the Southern Migrant & Refugee Centre and the neighbouring Dandenong Market, the free family-fun festival brings a wealth of locally-based cultural arts and experiences. The Unity in Diversity Festival is at the Southern Migrant & Refugee Centre, 39 Clow Street, and the Dandenong Market terrace on Sunday 13 October, 9am-4pm.
An upcoming papercrafts show presented gift bags to its charity partner and homelessness agency Wayss in Dandenong on 30 September. Cam and Brett Forsyth head off for a run during their 55-run partnership. 198537
Just inches from victory By Tyler Lewis Passages of brilliance placed Dandenong in a position to steal a famous win in its first match of the Victorian Premier Cricket season. But unfortunately for the Panthers, those passages were too few and far between to secure a Round 1 victory at Shepley Oval on Saturday. Melbourne Uni skipper James McNeil called correctly at the toss and sent the Panthers in to kick off the season. Dandenong was immediately on the back foot as a result of early wickets, but at 3/21 James Nanopoulos provided resistance the only way he knows how - with intent. Still, his 17 from 17 balls with three boundaries wasn't enough to dig the Panthers out of their early hole before the first passage of brilliance redirected the Dandenong innings. At 4/55, Cam Forsyth strolled to the crease to join his older brother Brett, who had seen all the carnage unfold at the non-striker's end. Together, the pair doubled the Panthers' total before Brett (48) fell just shy of yet another raise of his bat. Cam (25) joined his brother in the sheds shortly after, chasing a wide ball that caught the edge. After losing the two set batsmen, the Pan-
Melbourne Uni's Fergus McKenna launched this dive to try and stop a Cam Forsyth shot. 198537 thers needed some late order resistance. It didn't come through the likes of Pete Cassidy (nine), Akshat Buch (six) and Suraj Randiv (four) as the Panthers swiftly moved from 4/110 to 9/134. With the deck already playing havoc, it seemed if Jacques Augustin and Jakeb Thomas could scrounge to 150, it was going to be a competitive total. After nudging the score to 9/148, Thomas found the mid-off fielder three balls in a row before he swung through the line of the ball and cleared the boundary to the onside.
The maximum kick started a small fightback from the numbers 10 and 11, as Augustin found the rope the following over. Fighting to 9/163 after their 50, the Panthers had a decent total to defend. Melbourne Uni's opening pair got away to a fast start without the loss of a wicket until Thomas forced the chop on off the dangerous looking Jarrod Martignago (18 off 21 deliveries). With the visitors cruising to victory at 4/116, Akshat Buch's consistent line and length broke through and wreaked havoc on Uni's middle order, taking them from 4/116 to 7/124 in the space
of two overs to put the Panthers back on top. With every ball from Buch looking like getting a wicket, Suraj Randiv joined him from the other end to force the issue upon Melbourne. Unfortunately for the Panthers, Buch couldn't bowl all day and finished his remarkable 10 overs with the figures of 3/28 with four maidens. Nanopoulos took the ball from the end Buch did all the damage and immediately followed in his footsteps. With one of the more deceiving slower balls, the medium pacer trapped number 10 batsman Steven Reid in front. With one wicket needed for Dandenong and six runs for Melbourne, every ball had match-defining repercussions. Shortly after the dismissal, Nanopoulos again went up for an LBW appeal, almost on his knees pleading all the way at the striker's end. He was denied the match-winning scalp. Only a number of balls later, Uni's debutant Akon Mawien struck the ball down the ground to claim victory for Melbourne, chasing the total nine wickets down. The Panthers will be searching for their maiden win of the season when they take on Footscray at Mervyn Hughes Oval on Saturday.
Panther Perry to line up for Dandenong in huge boost By Tyler Lewis One of the greatest female cricketers of alltime, Australian superstar Ellyse Perry, is now a Dandenong Panther. This summer when she’s not donning the baggy green, Dandenong women’s coach Andrew Christie is more than happy to have her playing in his XI. “I have no doubt when she puts on the Dandenong playing kit on, she will be putting her best foot forward and trying to get a win on the board,“ he said. The news of Perry’s signing is still very fresh among the Dandenong coaching group, and while Christie isn’t sure how many games she will play for the Panthers, he is excited for the impact she can have on the developing cricketers rising through the ranks. “In terms of her schedule, I am unsure what her availability will be,” he said. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au
“(We are) obviously thrilled about it and what it does for cricket in the area, not only for Dandenong, but the area - cricket will be massive. “Hopefully we get her for a few games and I am sure that will provide plenty of enthusiasm for new players to come in and others to come watch.“ When representing the Panthers, Perry won’t only be leading from the front with her amazing ability to win games of cricket in a matter of overs, but - along with the abundance of other top-class talent within their ranks - will also be leading the charge of the future. “It is massive,” he said. “I think not only having Ellyse, but having Sophie Molineux and the other upcoming players like Nicole Faltum, Lucy Cripps and Courtney Neale who are in and around the Vic squad.
“Having that core group of players within arms reach for young female cricketers is an amazing opportunity for all of them. “Knowing the other girls, like Sophie, they are more than happy down at training to work with the younger players. “I think they find a lot of joy in bringing through the next crop whilst they are in amongst it themselves. “It will be a great thing for the club, the women’s squad, and I think the men’s squad as well - I think it will add a bit of a buzz to their program, hopefully we have a successful year.” In signing one of the most damaging cricketers in world cricket, the process of securing Perry’s signature was a long one, but Christie is ready to reap the rewards for the effort of the club. “Bit of an interesting one (the signing process),” he said.
“We are fairly well connected, having those girls I mentioned around the Vic squad and team. It was sort of a natural progression in a way. “We knew she was coming down to Victoria, ‘Okay I need to play club cricket somewhere’ and she obviously gets along with a lot of players in the squad. “I think it just evolved from there. “I will have a sit down with her and have a look at what her schedule looks like. “I am sure whenever she crosses that white line she will be giving her best - not only for herself but for the other ten players on the team,” Christie said. Across all three formats at international level, Perry currently averages 54 with the bat and 20.57 with the ball. While helping the Panthers strive for success, her work off the field will boost the development of women’s cricket in the area astronomically.

New coach for the Bulls By Nick Creely

New-look Panthers By Tyler Lewis PRESIDENT: Gary Davidson COACH: Nick Speak CAPTAIN: Tom Donnell HOME BASE: Shepley Oval, Dandenong LAST SEASON: 4th (9 wins, 5 losses, 3 draws, eliminated in the first final by Carlton) MOST RUNS IN '18/'19: Brett Forsyth (984 runs at 70.29, HS 168 not out, 3 100s, 6 50s) MOST WICKETS '18/'19: James Nanopoulos (33 wickets at 19.33, BB 4/73) INS: Gehan Seneviratne (Carlton), Suraj Randiv (Heinz Southern Districts), Triyan De Silva (Monash Tigers) OUTS: Adam McMaster (Melbourne), James Wilcock (Berwick), Darren Pattinson (retired), Paddy Turner (Gold Coast) PLAYERS TO WATCH: Comrey Edgeworth, Josh Slater, Ed Newman LAST FIRST XI PREMIERSHIP: 2017/18 MORE: The Panthers can never be questioned; they always find a way to win. Coming into the season lighter on bowlers than in previous years, Dandenong will be forced to make big totals with bat in hand - a
task its line-up has never had trouble completing. James Pattinson featured in the navy and red for seven matches last season but his recent rise back into the Australian fast bowling ranks could see him miss the majority of the season for his beloved Panthers. Promising young left-arm quick Triyan De Silva has also joined the Panthers to add to their bowling stocks from the Monash Tigers, where he played a handful of ones cricket, with skipper Tom Donnell recently hinting that the talented seamer would feature at first XI level at some point A strong bowling performance in the practice match against Melbourne where he took three wickets will unquestionably hold him in good stead for a round one selection. English paceman Josh Shaw will return to Shepley and will be standing at the top of his mark with intent to have a huge season when he jets over to Australia. But the Panthers are likely to be fairly spinheavy, meaning that they will probably be significantly different, especially in the bowling department. The Panthers have an abundance of spin options, including Akshat Buch, Suraj Randiv
and Gehan Seneviratne to choose from, with all three expected to feature heavily at times in the first XI. But it remains to be seen just how spin-heavy the Panthers will choose to go. Brett Forsyth's appetite for runs will undoubtedly entertain again, but for Dandenong to repeat its efforts of the 2017/18 season, Forsyth will need some support in the middle. Big seasons from Ed Newman and Cameron Forsyth would make the Panthers a nightmare to bowl to and put Dandenong's highest innings record of 406 in jeopardy if they bat first on a good wicket when red ball cricket comes around. Newman notched up a century in the practice match against Melbourne only a few weeks before the season and looks set to be given plenty of chances to cash in on his abundance of talent. Skipper Tom Donnell underwent surgery during the pre-season, but he is expected to be back as soon as possible for the Panthers. With some crucial matches, early wins on the board without the skipper will be pivotal for Dandenong.

Eastern Football League powerhouse Noble Park has announced its new senior coach, with the highly-regarded Steve Hughes inking a two-year deal at the Bullring. Hughes - a former Bulls senior footballer - has an extensive coaching resume, and has most recently led Bonbeach in the MPNFL, with a previous successful stint at Springvale Districts. The Bulls' new main man also has AFL and TAC Cup (now NAB League) experience as a recruiting consultant at Adelaide, a VFL and TAC Cup scout with Carlton, and as an assistant coach with the Sandringham Dragons. The announcement came only days after Noble's annual Peter Reece Best and Fairest awards, where Mick Fogarty - the club's outgoing coach and its longest-serving - was announced as a life member of the Bulls, with the two-time premiership mentor honoured for his immense contribution to the club. Fogarty - who elected not to be re-apply for the coaching position at the Bulls - has since taken up a new senior coaching role with another powerful south-east club, Beaconsfield, in AFL Outer East. The 2010 and 2011 Noble Park premiership coach's signature has been highly sought-after since departing the Bulls. While on AFL Outer East, Division 1 reigning premier Doveton has wasted little time in bolstering its list for a move up to Premier in 2020, signing Rowville forward Mark Seedsman as well as bringing Jarrod Smith back to the club. Seedsman kicked 40 goals in the Hawks' reserves this season after just five senior games, struggling to break into the side after being a senior regular for a number of years. Smith - a former Dandenong Stingrays star - re-joins the Doves after a stint at St Kilda City.
