Farewell Aunty By Jed Lanyon

acknowledgements, she always acknowledged what she saw as her non-Aboriginal brothers and sisters. “She was reconciliation, in one small, smiling, coughing, gummy ball of absolute love.” From 1980 to 1991 Aunty Dot worked as an Aboriginal Educator at Healesville Primary School. She would educate the students about Indigenous culture and passed on the art of basket coiling, which she had learned from her grandmother.

Picture: JESSE GRAHAM Aunty Dot was responsible for the creation of the Victorian Indigenous Remembrance Service in 2006. The event started at Healesville RSL where a didgeridoo was played alongside the ode as a way of honouring her father, who had died as a prisoner of war on the Thai Burma railway. Now, the event is held at the Shrine of Remembrance each year to honour the thousands of Aboriginal service men and women who have served and continue to serve in the Australian Defence Force.

In June, Aunty Dot was recognised as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) as part of the Queen’s Birthday 2019 honours for her significant service to the Indigenous community of Victoria. Some of Aunty Dot’s other achievements include, founder of Yarra Valley Aboriginal Elders Association, Honorary Elder and founding member of HICSA, a member of Victoria’s Aboriginal and women’s honour roll and a Centenary Medal recipient. 12420982-CG36-19

The Yarra Ranges community came together on Tuesday 1 October to celebrate the life of Indigenous Elder Dorothy Betsy Peters AM or ‘Aunty Dot’ as she was known by many. Hundreds of people gathered at Don Road Sporting Complex to pay their respects to Aunty Dot, who passed away at Healesville Hospital on Thursday 19 September aged 89. As a mark of mourning and respect, the Australian and Indigenous flags were flown at half-mast from all buildings and establishments occupied by the Victorian government. Aunty Dot was born and raised in Healesville in 1930 and was a much-loved member of the community upon her return to the town in 1969. Healesville Indigenous Community Services Association (HICSA) CEO Anne Jenkins spoke at the funeral service and described Dot as a truly lovely lady and an inspiration to all. “Aunty Dot was an incredible inspiration through her actions, and an understated force of great power and influence, one who has made a significant contribution to the lives of all Australians. “She is an unreplaceable connection with time and culture, and leaves behind an unfinished chapter in the story of who we all are. “Aunty Dot worked tirelessly to the very end, supporting and advocating for community.” Ms Jenkins said that HICSA’s core values of respect, caring and sharing, were words borrowed from Aunty Dot’s way of life. Healesville residents left flowers beside The Memo Hall where Aunty Dot’s portrait is currently featured as part of a temporary art installation. Aunty Dot was the mother of Andrew Peters and the grandmother to Jackson and Max. “Ma didn’t have an easy life but she found a way to find happiness in everything she did,” Andrew said. “Mum knew how she wanted people to be treated in her ideal world. And she tried to live that way every day. “In conducting her Welcome to Country

Healesville resident Helen Brown received a lovely surprise recently. Ms Brown lost her wallet in late September only to find it in her letterbox two days later. She said she believed someone must have either found her address in the wallet or taken it to the police station. “They didn’t leave a note, I don’t know who they were, they didn’t take anything out,” she said. Ms Brown said she wanted to thank whoever it was for the kind gesture.

When the Mail covered a story on the new community gateway signage placed at the entrance of Yarra Valley townships, many readers took to social media commenting that they resembled a giant roadside VB can. Seemingly inspired by the comments about Victoria Bitter tinnies, someone has now

painted the letters ‘VB’ in place of the numbers on the signage in Wesburn.

Serious about sleep One Lilydale resident took a stand at the recent Yarra Ranges Council meeting on Tuesday 24 September, barging in to share his displeasure at the late construction hours by crews at the new council offices. “I’m trying to get to sleep here,” shouted the man before being escorted out of the council chamber.

Fancy a swim? A new exercise space was a welcome addition to the Yarra Glen community as the equipment featured access for those with disabilities as well as a range of other outdoor gym equipment. But recently the new equipment has featured a swimming pool as the nearby Yarra River flooded the area bringing shin high water levels to the area. mailcommunity.com.au

IN BRIEF

Place plan passes By Jed Lanyon Yarra Ranges Councillors approved a motion to adopt the Lilydale Place Plan to guide decision making for Lilydale’s future liveability. The place plan will establish council’s strategic intent for the township and will guide long term decision making around programs and infrastructure. Council received 78 submissions in response to the Lilydale Place Plan as residents were concerned with issues such as the relocation of the library to central Lilydale, the abandoned White Dog Hotel, increased traffic, the proposed bypass, the Level Crossing Removal Project and the Kinley development. Lilydale and District Historical Society president Sue Thompson voiced her support for the issue at the 24 September council meeting. “The place plan has taken a long time to come to fruition ... it’s sad that Lilydale has always been a town that sort of gets passed over with things. “My only hope is that now that this is going to be adopted is that things start to happen.” Ms Thompson spoke of a proposed bypass that would have been constructed for Lilydale in 1978 at a cost of $2 million. “We’re still waiting for it,” she said. “There is no heart in Lilydale ... We as a community and as a council, need to create that heart and give Lilydale something to be really proud of.“ Councillor Fiona McAllister said, “Hopefully moving forward, the decisions we make as a council will absolutely be through the lens of the place plan and be very much about making a heart and beautiful open spaces for Lilydale.” Ms Thompson joked that she would be following the councillor’s actions closely to ensure that Lilydale would be a high priority. “Let’s go forward, but council, when you do

Councillors and residents expressed their disappointment about the lack of community input and the short notice given from the state government regarding the construction, which is expected to be completed by 2022. Council approved a motion to submit their preferences surrounding the construction of the new overhead crossings. Residents expressed their concerns about a range of issues including the temporary and permanent loss of parking for traders, bus in-

terchanges, loss of trees, potential new business frontages and more. “Unfortunately, we’ve all had a very rushed timetable, not of council’s choosing. And the efforts of council have been to get the very best out of the limited time available,” Mayor Tony Stevenson said. “It’s a building that we hope, like any public infrastructure, will be future proofed.” Councillor Terry Avery said, “It’s not a done deal yet, we’re still a long way off but we are under pressure to make a response to the rail crossing authority.” Councillor Richard Higgins described the process as a ‘nightmare’ and said that everyone wants something different from the situation. “It’s nothing short of a disgrace; the government has forced us to push this through at a very fast rate ... If we don’t put something in, we’ll actually get nothing,” Mr Higgins said.

Pit stop arrest

Investigators from the Croydon Divisional Tasking Unit have charged seven people after discovering a large quantity of alleged drugs concealed in a car. Police intercepted the Kia Sportage at a service station on the Melba Highway, Glenburn, just after 9pm yesterday evening (2 October). The car was searched and a quantity of drugs were located within an internal cavity of the vehicle with an alleged value in excess of $275,000. A 26-year-old Croydon man, and a 22-yearold Croydon Hills man who were occupants of the vehicle were both arrested and charged with trafficking commercial quantity of drugs and proceeds of crime. Following the discovery police executed several search warrants at addresses in Croydon, Croydon Hills, Kilsyth and Mt Evelyn and arrested a further five alleged offenders. Those who dare to care By Jed Lanyon A new carers community hub aimed at providing assistance to carers and families will be coming to the Healesville Living and Learning Centre. Inspiring people with Disabilities through Awareness, Resources, Empowerment and Unity (iDareU) is a not for profit organisation dedicated to providing people with a disability, and their families, the best possible resources to enhance their lives. iDareU project officer Anna Johnston said, "The carer hubs are going to be a space for people to come and connect and recharge and just ... It's a place for them to be able to call their own, to come and connect with other likeminded people." For the first event on Sunday 13 October, iDareU founder and CEO Sue Dymond will give a talk about the NDIS and provide advice and support for families and carers. iDareU board member Sharon Davey explained the importance of a carers hub. "I think it'll be a great opportunity for people to come and connect with each other. As a grandmother of a child with a disability I can see what impact it has on my daughter and her friends," she said. "Carers have a 24/7 job. Not many of us will say that's what our role is ... They care for the person they love dearly, so they deserve a space and time to be able to take a breath. "I think that carers are really quite disadvantaged in many ways. They really do suffer from isolation and stress. They have higher rates of illness and financially, they suffer." Healesville Living and Learning Centre executive officer Jenny Branton said she is looking forward to seeing the carers hub in Healesville. "Some carers don't wear the carers badge and they're likely to say, 'I'm a mother, not a

"It also gives an opportunity to be referred to other services and to find out what other support is available." The iDareU carers community hub will take

Don’t tease bees please By Derek Schlennstedt Bees. Can't live with them, can't live without them. It seems that in spring, even more noteworthy then angry magpies swooping careless and innocent children is the recent surge in large swarms of bees deciding to settle down in houses, cars and basically any stationary object that is left alone for an hour or two. In the past few weeks, we've had bees on cars at Healesville Hospital, bees in houses in Monbulk and folks, it doesn't look like it's going to stop anytime soon. Now, while bees might be absolutely vital to the continuation of our global ecosystem, nobody wants thousands of stingy bois swarming directly outside your car or inside your house. So, here at the Mail, we put our investigative journalist hats on and took a deep dive into why bees decide to glaze themselves onto things without warning. To the Bee-mobile! The mail spoke to Macclesfield resident and Emerald Regional Beekeepers Association member Greg Huggins about this strange phenomenon. "Swarming is just a natural reproductive cycle of the bees at this time of the year," he told the Mail. "Over winter they're quiet and then as it gets warmer the queen starts laying profusely so the number of bees suddenly increases, and suddenly a two bedroom house with two kids becomes a two bedroom house with four kids and it becomes overcrowded in the hive so half of them more or less leave with the old queen." "The swarm is basically just bees in transit who have left the original hive clump together for safety and are scouting out new homes." "They will hang in a shrub or tree fern or a car as a transit point, while the scout bees are out looking for a new home." Already Mr Huggins has removed three

Emerald Regional Beekeepers Association member Greg Huggins said bee swarms were generally placid and move on within a day or two. 165314 swarms from trees and shrubs located close to homes. In Healesville the Mail reported on a swarm of around 4500 bees that had chosen to relocate onto a nurses car. Mr Huggins said that in most instances, removing a swarm is relatively easy, and that swarms were generally quite docile. "Generally speaking bees in a swarm are not aggressive, they're usually quite passive."

"Bees are only aggressive when they are defending a hive. If you're in transit you don't have a home to defend and all you're doing is waiting peacefully for the scouts to find a new home." He said that if you locate a swarm, it was important to keep a safe distance and contact a professional beekeeper if close to a house or people. "Step one is to just leave them alone and

keep your children and pets at a respectful distance ... if they are close to the house or people leave them alone and call us and we'll make every effort to remove them and rehome them in a snug and cosy hive." In celebration of International Zoo Keeper Day on Friday 4 October, Healesville Sanctuary keeper James Goodridge sat down for a Q&A with the Mail. What is your role at Healesville Sanctuary? I specialise in working with free flying birds. I train the birds to free fly and then present the show twice a day. We train parrots and a range of raptors for our free flight show. What do you enjoy most about working at the sanctuary? I really enjoy free flying birds. I know it sounds a bit obvious but I enjoy the variation of it, in that every day and every show is a little bit different. We don't know what our birds are going to do... And when there are a thousand people in an arena, anything can happen. I enjoy working with animals and allowing them to express their personality as well. In saying that 'anything can happen', what is something that has happened during one of the shows? I've been doing this for 12 years. Two shows a day every day and we've never done two shows the same. Just yesterday we started our show and had a black kite flying around, but we had two wild eagles just up above him. That's when you realise, anything can happen here ... Having eagles fly above them can be highly intimidating so wonder, are they going to do their job? What is something that visitors might know about Healesville Sanctuary? I think a lot of visitors don't know that we breed and release a lot of endangered animals. I think a lot of people don't appreciate that Australia has as many endangered animals as anywhere else in the world. What is your favourite animal and why? Can I have two? I love wedge-tailed eagles. They're great, they look big and scary but our eagles are quite nice. My other favourite is the

opposite, in the little kestrel. So the wedgetailed is the largest raptor in Australia and the kestrel is the smallest. His name is Rusty ... He's got a big personality for a little bird. What is the Spirits of the Sky presentation? It's a free flight bird presentation that we run twice daily. We try to show about 10-11 differ-

ent bird species in about 24 minutes. It's really quick, there's a lot happening. But in saying that, we give you birds the opportunity to represent themselves. We give them a lot of choice and control in how the show will go. What is something you're passionate about? Changing the world. Dealing with some of the

environmental issues in the world in a positive way. It's on a small scale what we do here, but say if we have 400,000 visitors a year. That's a great number of people we can influence to hopefully change their behaviour to make a bigger difference for the future of humans and animals.

Spring sun brings reminder of hazard

Operation Motosafe

By Jed Lanyon With the sunshine appearing once again, many native species, including snakes, become more visible. The re-emergence of snakes can elicit a panicked response, which DELWP forest and wildlife officer Hannah Ransome says isn't necessary. "People and snakes have more in common than most of us realise. We have matching taste in terms of weather: we both like seeing the spring sunshine at the end of a long winter, which is why our paths cross on lovely spring days; and we both want to be out and about enjoying the outdoors. "And like most humans, snakes don't want a fight. They enjoy a little personal space and are happiest when left alone to go about their business." Ms Ransome said there are some misconceptions about snakes and their behaviour. Snakes are unlikely to bite unless provoked or startled. "People often worry about encountering snakes during warmer weather. But rather than be alarmed or fearful of snakes, spring offers a good reminder to be aware of them; and simply give them a wide berth if you come across one on the golf course or in your yard." The most common snakes found in Melbourne are Tiger Snakes and Lowland Copperheads. In drier areas, Eastern Brown Snakes are common and occasionally the Red-bellied Black Snake. Some key points to remember about liv-

ing in or visiting an area with snakes is that if you see a snake, keep calm and remain still or move away from the snake. Never touch or attempt to capture or hurt a snake. Instead call DELWP customer service centre on 136 186 who can put you in contact with your nearest licensed snake catcher. Have a spring clean. Clean up around the house and cut lawns regularly. Snakes are at-

tracted to shelter such as piles of rocks and timber, sheets of metal, or building materials. Undertake first aid training, ensure your first aid kit contains several compression bandages, and if someone is bitten call 000 immediately. Snakes are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. It is illegal to capture, kill or harm them. Bites can occur when people try to kill snakes.

For the month of October, police in the Yarra Ranges will take part in Operation MotoSafe, which aims to keep motorcyclists safe and free from injury. The operation will run throughout eastern Victoria and coincides with the MotoGP Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix 2019. Eastern Region Road Policing Inspector Stephen Cooper said that this year has been a particularly challenging year on Victorian roads, with a lot of the trauma taking place in country Victoria. "At the beginning of the year we saw a lot of fatalities and serious injuries involving motorcyclists," Insp Cooper said. "With the warmer weather encouraging riders to get back on their motorcycles, we want everyone to know that police will be out enforcing against those who engage in risky behaviour." During the operation police will focus on reducing the incidence and severity of road trauma, targeting drivers impaired by alcohol and drugs, as well as fatigue. The Grand Prix will be a major focus of the operation with a highly visible police presence ensuring visitors to Phillip Island arrive safely. Between 25 and 27 October, police will be on patrol in and around the race track and on all roads leading to Phillip Island.

WANDIN SILVAN FIELD DAYS

Field Days celebrate 50 By Romy Stephens Fifty years ago, the Wandin Silvan Field Days festival came to life. Always a popular event among locals, it originally hosted a small number of tractors and farm machinery with a couple of white

tents scattered throughout a single oval. Gruyere farmer Peter Burgi is one of two people still around that attended the first festival in 1969. He recalled a different scene from what visitors will see at the festival today.

“It was just a circle of exhibitors around the East Wandin Cricket Ground,” he said. “It was a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky. “It was primarily designed to show off the new equipment that was available, more of a machinery field day.”

The event originally started as a means for people to source information and network with others in the industry. “When we first started there was no internet and no mobile phones so you had to work to get your information,” Mr Burgi said.

fantastic years “You could come along to the field days and talk to the people that were selling things and compare them on the site.” Wind the clock forward to today and the festival has grown into a much larger event, not only for the agriculture and horticulture industry but also other types of businesses and even families. “It’s changed from purely a farmers’ day to cater for women and children and for people that don’t have the interest in farming,” Mr Burgi said. This year the festival is back to celebrate it’s 50th anniversary. Upon arrival at this year’s event, visitors will still notice the distinct horticultural and farm machinery theme that has become key to the festival. A wide range of exhibitors will attend from across the country to display farm machinery, light industrial equipment, motor vehicles, irrigation equipment and water tanks, plus information on the latest pest and weed control, fertilisers and chemicals. Those attending will not only see the latest in farm machinery, technology and related services but also have the chance to network with others in the industry. Meanwhile, it’s expected some of the old machinery and former exhibitors and committee members will attend to help celebrate the special milestone.

But the event is not just for those who are interested in agriculture and horticulture - organisers said there would also be plenty for the entire family to do. The Information and Lifestyle Pavillion will host special interest exhibitors selling a range of different things such as food, wine, craft, nursery produce, clothing, jewellery and much more. The Heritage Draught Horse Club will attend to display and promote the use of draught horses in bygone days. Children won’t be left to twiddle their thumbs, with a pet show, snake pit, pony rides and an animal nursery among the activities to keep them entertained. As much as the festival has changed over the years, Mr Burgi said it was a big achievement to have kept the social aspect of the event going for such a long time. “Fifty years in life is a bit of a milestone. To be able to run it for 50 years continually is a pretty fair effort,” he said. “(I enjoy) meeting people that you don’t see on a regular basis...talking to the exhibitors that you’ve probably known for many years. “I’ve made some very good friends over the years.” The 50th Wandin Silvan Field Days will be held on 11 and 12 October at the Wandin East Recreation Reserve in Wandin East.

SHEDFEST 2019

Sips, Strolls and Sheds The annual Yarra Valley Shedfest Wine Festival returns for its 18th incarnation from 12 to 13 October, proudly celebrating the providence of grape-to-glass production of premium locally produced wine. Hosted by Yarra Valley Smaller Wineries Association (YVSWA), the collective two-day event sees 13 small and family-owned wineries and vineyards open their cellar doors and wine sheds. Visitors can celebrate the new vintage in style with over 80 wines on tasting and twoday entry and souvenir glass entry for $15.

Immersive and sensory, family-friendly Shedfest offers fine fare, premium wines with exclusive releases, unique gastronomic delights - with each winery offering different cuisines, cellar-door specials, as well as live music and entertainment, including lawn games at some venues. The event is a great opportunity to curate wine lists for Christmas and organise Christmas presents that pair with the stories of their creators. Event organisers claim that the continual growth and success of the annual Shedfest

event has led to its expansion across the entire Yarra Valley. Participating wineries stretch along the Warburton Highway to Seville, Maroondah Highway to Healesville and the Melba Highway to Yarra Glen. This year participating wineries include Badger’s Brook in Coldstream, Billanook Estate in Chirnside Park, Boat O’Craigo in Healesville, Elmswood Estate in Seville, Kellybrook Winery in Wonga Park, Payne’s Rise in Seville, Seville Hill in Seville, Six Acres in Silvan, Soumah in Gruyere, Steels Gate Wines in Dixons Creek,

Tokar Estate in Coldstream, Whispering Hills Vineyard in Seville, and Yering Farm Wines in Yering. Event patrons can also enjoy the fact that they are contributing to local community groups, with the YVSWA raising well over $80,000 towards groups including the local CFA and SES. For further information regarding ticket options, travel options, a map of the event and participating wineries, visit www.shedfest. com.au.

HEALESVILLE

Cellar door celebration Watts River Brewery will celebrate three years of its cellar door next month in traditional style. From 18 to 20 October the cellar door will host live music, craft beer, pizza and even a special birthday brew. Visitors can sit back, relax and wind down over the weekend with a drink and full view of the working brewery operation. The Watts River Brewery is a 100 per cent Australian, family-owned and independent brewery with its cellar door located in Healesville. It is owned by two young families, comprising of brewers Aaron and Ben - who have 11 years of industry brewing experience between them - and their wives Emily and Hanna. Most weekends, visitors will find one of the brewers working alongside their knowledgeable staff. Every Friday, there is live music from 5pm to 8pm, which supports local artists and creates a relaxed vibe for families and craft beer lovers to slide into the weekend. Visitors of the cellar door usually have one or two special batch beers to taste alongside the core range. The core range includes the Blonde, IPA, River Session Pale Ale and Stout and Nipper the light beer designed for the Healesville Music Festival. Alongside these staples, Ben and Aaron produce traditional Belgian style beers. The pair won a Gold Medal for their Belgian Quad at the AIBA 2018. They have an extensive barrel program including sours, brett beers and spontaneous ferments. One half of the business, Ben and Hanna Hamilton originally hailed from Barley farms

ENTERTAINMENT

It’s not the Archies By Jed Lanyon There's never been a better time to experience Yarra Glen, as the historic town plays host to a day of arts events as part of the Not the Archies Arts Fix on Saturday 12 October, 11am-10pm. The one-day arts festival allows visitors to experience Yarra Glen through an artistic lens and will act as an economic driver attracting visitors to the region. The key event of the festival is the launch of the Not the Archies Street Gallery, a grassroots portraiture project by the artistic Yarra Ranges community and supported by Yarra Ranges Council. This initiative is a community project to foster creativity and give emerging artists an opportunity to put their work on display. Hundreds of painted, woven or sketched portraits will be on show in the windows of traders along the main street of Yarra Glen, breathing life into the streetscape and adding a human touch with faces from the community on display. The Not the Archies Arts Fix also includes the Gulf Station Open Day where time-honoured skills and forgotten trades like basket making, weaving and spinning and blacksmithing are rediscovered onsite at the heritage homestead. Visitors can also take a sneak peek at the outstanding contemporary Australian sculptures that are peppered on the landscaped lawns of Yarra Valley Arts Yering Station Sculpture Exhibition which is officially opening the following day. Studio doors of some of the most talented artists in the Yarra Valley will open to reveal magical and usually hidden worlds along the Melba Highway as part of Yarra Valley Arts Open Studios.

West African Immersion By Jed Lanyon Immerse yourself in West African culture for an afternoon of West African drum dance and culture at Yarra Valley ECOSS on Saturday 12 October. The event will feature West African drum and dance workshops from renowned drummer Bassidi Konè and Shabba Eshun. Enjoy an African concert with Ghanaian master drummer Kofi Kunkpe and Yarra Valley Drummers with special guests Bassidi Konè with drums and Balafon and South African performer and story teller Valanga Khoza. Come and attend a workshop or just come along to the Concert and enjoy the West African experience which will have you up and dancing. Visitors can enjoy African food available all day and with dinner at 6pm. For more information and for tickets, visit https://events.humanitix.com.au/west-african-performing-arts-immersion West African Immersion will take place at Yarra Valley ECOSS 711 Old Warburton Rd Wesburn from 3pm to 9pm.

A highlight of the day will be the Not the Archies Projection of Local Faces. As darkness falls, visitors can watch art created in real time while an artist creates live portraits of people, projected onto the face of a building in the Yarra Glen main street.

There will be live music from 8pm at the Yarra Valley Grand Hotel. The Not the Archies Arts Fix embodies the spirit of the creative local community with access to a variety of art platforms and experiences across the day. https://bit.ly/2Vh0DHJ

Joker is a harrowing, engrossing character drama about the rise of iconic supervillain The Joker. Joaquin Phoenix delivers a riveting performance as Arthur Fleck, a severely-depressed man struggling to put on a happy face. The pacing has a tense rubber-band effect: small positives, such as Arthur's job as a clown and his tender relationship with his mother, brighten his mood and outlook, but misfortunes, shocking discoveries about his past and the general hopelessness of his condition cause his mind to crash back into darkness. The suspense tightens, and the intense fatigue and angst in Pheonix's performance escalate, as this back-and-forth effect progresses, until Arthur's sanity inevitably snaps.

Arthur's development is a powerful study in irony. Assuming his Joker persona, Arthur attains newfound focus and vigour, but commits horrific acts of violence and theatrical sadism. Arthur heals, but in sickening ways; this clash of sympathetic and monstrous makes him all the more compelling. The film also features a slimy outing from Robert De Niro as Arthur's talk-show host hero, grungy art direction capturing the widespread discontent and wealth disparity of '80s America, and an eerie score from Hildur Guonadottir (composer for the Emmy-winning Chernobyl mini-series). Joker is a taut, superbly-acted and deeplyconfronting character study about a man both succumbing to darkness and growing through it. - Seth Lukas Hynes

THEY HAVE THE DRIVE TO BEAT MND The generosity of people in country towns is amazing with over $2.6 million being raised from the drive last year. All fundraising initiatives of Fight MND has raised over $37.6 million in total which has been committed to research initiatives in order to help find a cure for this disease. Motor Neurone Disease affects the muscles that control speaking, breathing and swallowing by degeneration. The average lifespan is two years from diagnosis with only 10 per cent living longer than five years. Neale was diagnosed in 2013 and is still very hands on attending most fundraising events including the “Daniher Drive”. Brett’s involvement came about through a close friend losing a family member to MND. The team was named Robyn’s Rollers in her memory. If you would like to donate call Brett on 0407 595 164 or go to www.bwhealesville. com.au to access the link to the teams fundraising page. ●

One hundred vehicles of all descriptions from across the country will take part in the four-day drive, which this year starts at Werribee Zoo, travels to Creswick, on to Wangaratta, driving through Healesville on the Saturday to finish at Mornington on Saturday night. The vehicles stop at many country towns along the drive as well as holding evening events to raise valuable funds for research and to fight what Neale Daniher calls ‘The Beast’. Many will know Neale from his involvement with AFL football both as a past Essendon player and previous Melbourne coach. YV cricket season starts By Anthony Sequeira After six months, cricket returned to the Yarra Valley on Saturday for Round 1 action. As in seasons past, play was set to be a to and fro between sides as players looked to shake off the rust and put their best foot forward to start the season. In the DJ Strachan Shield, new boys Gruyere set out to show they can take it up with the best as they took on Healesville at home. Gruyere's evergreen M.Tilney (2/30) heaped pressure on Healesville's order early. Healesville captain Ash Hamer (73) set about scoring a brisk half-century, combining with J.Poynton (47) for a century stand before cameos from G.Poynton and D.Ebbels added the finishing touches to the innings to take the total to a formidable 245. Chasing a total above 200 was always going

to be a challenge for Gruyere. Despite regular wickets through the innings, Gruyere always looked a chance. But in the end, Healesville was able to manage Gruyere's scoring rate to restrict their total to 7/195 and take the game by 50 runs. Wandin's year got off to a good start with a strong collective batting effort seeing it claim victory against Yarra Junction. A strong partnership between S.Falkingham (57) and J.Bromiley (57) and some good late hitting from B.Edwards (24) saw Wandin finish on 6/235. Yarra Junction's Number 4 M.Malik was brutal on the loose ball but he lacked any noteworthy support as the lower order fell to the bowling of E.Alderman (4/30). When he was the last man out for 85 there was still 6 overs left in the Yarra Junction innings and although the Eagles were still 60

runs short of their target, one would think an even batting display with multiple contributors would have taken them very close to a victory. In both RAFT Blue and Gold, runs were the order of the day as games were won off the back of a series of big individual innings. Coldstream's D.Sharp (132) struck a stunning century against a hapless Healesville attack, sharing a double century opening partnership with young gun M.Pezzimenti (88). The only positive for Healesville was A.Pearce (4/24) as he collected late wickets. Yarra Junction hosted Wandin at Yarra Junction oval in another game where the side batting first dominated the contest. Yarra Junction struck a strong total of 6/218 featuring half-centuries to R.Turner (71*) and A.Vandervlugt (58*). At Wickhams reserve, Launching Place took

on Warburton in a game that the young talent in the Yarra Valley on display. Launching Place found the going tough early and further losses late in the innings saw the side eventually scrape together 151. The Burras began their chase rapidly and in the end, reeled in the score with more than 10 overs to spare. In the final match of the round, Marysville travelled to Woori Yallock to take on the Tigers at home. Marysville batted a disappointing 118 while a brutal display of power hitting from Woori Yallock's H.Smith (66*) and J.Young (39*) chased down the score with half the overs still in hand and seven wickets in the shed. Next week sees the first round of T20 action in the Yarra Valley with double-header matches scheduled to start at 1pm and 3.20pm at both Yarra Junction and Healesville.

Best foot forward for this young competitor in the jumps.

Sun shining as little athletes gear up for summer By Jamie Strudley The Yarra Ranges Athletics Club's summer track and field season kicked off on Saturday with lots of smiling, enthusiastic athletes, energetic parents helping out and the sun shining. The club's little athletics program began in perfect conditions with numerous athletes joining the warm-up run by the open age athletes. Age groups then went to the various events and dived head-first into track and field. There were plenty of parents that helped out and seemed keen to ensure the day was enjoyable for athletes. The club's senior team travelled to Nunawading and Aberfeldie venues for the opening round of the Athletics Victoria summer season. The new format for team athletics, AVSL, seemed popular with a big turnout of athletes at all venues. The majority of the club's athletes were at Nunawading where some exceptional performances and many early-season personal best's were recorded. The team finished in third position after round one, with eleven more rounds to come. Registrations are open for both Little Athletics (lavic.com.au) and the club's senior team via Athletics Victoria (athsvic.org.au). The club welcomes and encourages all athletes of any age or ability. For information on training, how to join or trial, photos, results and updated news, visit the website at yarrarangesathletics.org.au or visit the club's Facebook page. 26 MAIL

Warburton Bowls pennant season gets under way

Witnessing a wonder

By Garry Lewis The Warburton Bowls Club's pennant season commenced on 1 October with the mid-week team playing Mooroolbark 2 at home in fine conditions. Warburton 1 defeated Mooroolbark 2, 90 to 38. Rink scores were as follows: G. Walsh 18/22; S. Lord 42/5 and G. Broussard 30/11. The side plays Lilydale 1 away this week. Saturday Pennant commenced with Warburton 1 playing Yarra Glen 1 away. Yarra Glen was too strong overall winning 92 to 63. Rink scores were as follows: B. Woods 18/12; S. Lee- Tet 16/ 26; J. Brookes 12/ 29 and J. Van Der Zweep 17/ 25. The side will face Ferntree Gully 1 this week at home. In a thrilling finish, Warburton 2 came from behind to draw against Healesville 2, 79-79. It all came down to the last end, needing two shots to win, but the side could only get one shot. Rink scores were as follows: B. Hall 21/ 25; P.

By Ron Hottes Occasionally, really special results happen, out of the blue. Warburton Golf Club's resident pro, Kevin Smith, decided to join a couple of lucky members for a casual hit at the 2 October Stroke & M.McGrann "Bag-day". Those two members were very lucky as they saw first-hand a 60 off-the-stick. Kevin's back-nine of 28 is a club record. Although not officially in the comp, Kevin's score was recorded as a Nett 61. The best score on the day among the mere mortals was a Nett 68 from 'The Flying Scot', Neil Leckenby. The club's daily runner-up was Dave Viney, also with a 68, so Mr Leckenby only won on a countback. Balls went down to 73. Nearest the pins went to CHB (for a terrific 2nd shot on the 1st), "Old Man River" Hubbard (9th) and to Ron Hottes (12th). Monthly Medal rounds often draw out great scores and the 5 October Stroke and M/Medal day was no exception. A Nett 65 by the club's vice-captain, Andy Lockey, was good enough to earn him the M/ Medal and the A-Grade voucher. Andy will be back teaching after the holidays so it's unlikely his name will be seen again until January. Ken White won B-Grade with a Nett 67. But, Clinton Toohey was the daily runner-up with a Nett 66 and an eagle on the 10th. Balls stretched to 70 only. Nearest the pin winners were D.Ritchie (a

McConachy 25/ 10; P. Summers 20/ 21 and N. Whelan 13/ 23. The side plays Eastwood Golf 1 at home this week. Warburton 3 (6 a side) played Chirnside Park 4 at home and lost 35 to 48. Rink scores were as follows: N. Donohue 23/ 13 and M. Van Meurs 12/ 35. The side will take on Monbulk 3 away this week. The Wednesday Night Barefoot Bowls Competition will commence shortly, with new teams welcome. For more information, visit www.warburtonbowls.com.au.

Big turnout for social golf By Karl Hradsky guest, on the 3rd), Ms Nursey (5th), Wayne 'Senior' Kempton (9th & 12th) & to Danny Fox (15th). The President's Trophy was also played in conjunction with the Medal day, and The Flying Scot, Neil Leckenby, came out on top after shooting a Nett 72.

Healesville Social Golf Club's annual doubles weekend saw a substantial group play the RACV Cape Shanck course on Saturday. Winners for the day were Travis Carroll (10) and Greg Hay (26) as runner up. On Sunday, most players struggled in the gale-force wind conditions at Eagle Ridge. Laurie Tormey (15) seemed to control his

game well with an impressive Stableford score of 38 points. The returning Paul Colomb (12) managed a credible 35 points for second. Nearest the pins were struck by Tony Druit, Greg Urquart, Laurie Tormey and Paul Colomb. The overall winner for the weekend was Laurie Tormey.
