Cafe mural win The Locavore Studio cafe is a step closer to keeping its outdoor mural but is still fighting to retain a certain aspect of the artwork. The Yarra Ranges Council met with cafe owner Jessie Crossley last month and granted permission for the mural to be kept based on the condition that the writing 'locavore' was removed. The council's acting director of social and economic development, Greg Box, said the size and prominence of the business name on the mural did not meet planning scheme requirements. "We've recently received advice that because of the painted coat on the wall before
the mural was created, a re-painted surface can be considered," he said. "However, the mural currently features the name of the business in large letters, which would require a planning permit. "The mural, if altered to remove the business signage aspect, would meet the requirements of the Planning Scheme." However, Ms Crossley claimed she was told by the council that a complaint was the reason the mural couldn't stay. "Pretty much what it came down to was that they are happy for the mural to stay," she said. "But there was another complaint that it's unfair we have such a big wall to have advertising on.
"That's the reason why we need to paint over the word locavore." Ms Crossley said that although she didn't agree with the decision, she was pleased the council had listened to the community's wishes to keep the mural and she would remove the writing in the end if need be. "I don't agree with it, I think that the rent that I'm paying per month would justify me to utilise my space as I wish," she said. "I haven't put the words Locavore Studio on the side of the wall." The mural's artist, Paul Sonsie, said he believed the issue had moved away from heritage listing and the council was now "trying to please everybody."
"It's a solution that they've thrown at us that I think it just doesn't make any sense at all," he said. "Its come away from the heritage overlay and it's becoming a jealous story. "It's just smart branding on a wall that she (the owner) has and locavore means to eat local that's why it works as a community word." The council claimed that no further compliance action on the mural will be taken until a new application has been made and assessed. IN BRIEF Drug and weapons offences
Turning into a tip
A man was arrested and charged with drug and weapon offences in Emerald on 9 October. Police conducted a search warrant at the Old Gembrook Road property and seized a .22 calibre revolver, 446 rounds of cartridge ammunition, a Prohawk crossbow and bolts, five cannabis plants and knuckledusters. One male was arrested and charged with drug and weapon offences, unlicensed person possess cartridge ammunition and will face the Dandenong Magistrates Court at a later date.
By Derek Schlennstedt Over the past two weeks, drums of waste have been found dumped in bushland near the 1000 steps walking track, requiring complex and lengthy clean-up operations. Authorities were first made aware of dumped chemicals on 2 October when they found nine drums rolled down a gully just off Mount Dandenong Tourist Road near Upper Ferntree Gully. A further seven drums were then pulled from the side of Mount Dandenong Tourist Road on 7 October only a few hundred metres from the previous ones. Even more were found on 3 October in Tremont. Belgrave Acting Sergeant Angelo Stylianou said that CFA crews and police attended the dumping site on 7 October but he could not confirm whether the two were related. "A further seven barrels were located further up the road from the others on 7 October and some more after that." "There were four completely empty and three contained a liquid substance." It took CFA crews approximately three hours to remove the drums and ongoing investigations are underway. Act Sgt Stylianou said that the drums were the same size and colour as the other ones that were located a week before. According to the EPA, the illegal dumping of contaminated fill material, tyres, manufacturing, construction and demolition waste is an indictable offence, and can attract a maximum court penalty of $610,700 or seven years imprisonment for an individual, and more than $1.2 million for a corporation. The dumping has drawn the ire of residents, and a petition to install CCTV cameras in the national park has attracted almost 1000 signatures. "I live in Sassafras and commute to work via the tourist road every day. It makes me so sad seeing how people disregard the beauty of our
Seville siege
CFA crews had to work in 20 minute intervals as they removed the drums from the side of Mount Dandenong Tourist Road. mountain by being lazy and dumping their unwanted items carelessly in this Forest," posted one individual who had signed the petitio0n. Parks Victoria District Manager for the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Ranges Victoria Purdue said Parks Victoria was alerted to a number of chemical drums that had been dumped within Dandenong Ranges National Park and together with the EPA were investigating the contents. "The contents of the drums was unknown so the CFA hazmat team treated it as hazardous waste, with Parks Victoria engaging a licenced contractor to contain and remove them the same day," she said. "The contents of the drums will be tested to ensure they are disposed of in accordance with all waste management legislative requirements."
She said that luckily there has not been any negative impact on the natural environment and that dumpers can face serious fines if caught. "Illegal dumping of rubbish is an environmental crime. As well as being unsightly and potentially dangerous for visitors, dumped rubbish also causes serious pollution and environmental harm and is extremely costly and time consuming for Parks Victoria to remove." "Parks Victoria is disappointed that this has occurred and is committed to preserving Victoria's special places, providing world-class visitor experience and looking after our environmental and cultural values." Anyone with information or who may have seen suspicious activity in the area is urged to contact Belgrave Police on 9754 6677
Men’s Shed builds secure bike shed By Derek Schlennstedt Students at Upwey primary School have returned to school to the surprise addition of a new bike shed. Over the holiday period the newly established Upwey Men's Shed undertook their first project, which involved building a bike shed for the students after the previous one was stolen. Upwey Primary Principal Rebecca Honeysett said a bike was stolen from their existing bike cage - which was also stolen - at the front of the school and that since then students had been storing their bikes in a separate schoolroom. "We haven't had anywhere to store the bikes other than an office in the school," Ms Honeysett said. "Our current one is not ideal as a bike shed
... even though there was lots of big chains and the cage was locked it wasn't suitable and two bikes and the cage got stolen." Ms Honeysett said the attribution of a new shed would help to encourage more students to ride to school and embrace a healthy lifestyle. She said that without the assistance of the Men's Shed the school would not have been able to afford a new shed. "To do it professionally would have cost us a lot of money, and wasn't something we could've done on our own." "For them to come back and help out is fantastic and something that's really important to our students." "We are so grateful for their generosity and now the children have a safe and secure place to store their bikes."
SAFER POWERLINES TO REDUCE THE RISK OF BUSHFIRES
Upwey primary School has thanked the Upwey Men's Shed for their hard work over the school holidays, for creating a safe and secure Bike Shed for students.
A man is in hospital under police guard following a siege in Seville on Tuesday 8 October.. Officers were called to a residence on Candy Close about 4.20pm following reports that a man was armed with a weapon and was refusing to come out of the house. According to police reports the man was threatening to burn the house down with a gas torch and had spent time fortifying the house. He was also armed with a firearm. A Critical Incident Response Team attended the incident with negotiators able to coax the man outdoors. The 33-year-old Seville man was apprehended without incident and taken to hospital for assessment. Residents reported that nearby Seymour Street and Drummond Road had been blocked as police responded to the incident.
Petrol drive-off Police were called to a petrol drive-off at the Upwey 7/11 service station on 10 October. A stolen BMW with two people were located at the 1000 steps and one individual was arrested and charged with several offences relating to stolen property, Theft of motor car and drug offences.
Burns offs The CFA is urging people to take extreme care when burning off. CFA chief officer Steve Warrington reminded residents to register burn-offs and check the local conditions on the day. We encourage residents to take advantage of the window of opportunity to clean up their properties before the bushfire season, but we're also reminding people to always registertheir burn-offs so we know what is happening in the area, especially if brigades are being called to fires," Mr Warrington said. "It reduces the chances of CFA brigades being called out unnecessarily if a member of the public calls about smoke or a fire in the area." CFA urged residents to be aware of weather conditions along with council local laws. "The effects of an out-of-control fire can be devastating," Mr Warrington said. Even if you have registered your burn, conditions can change quickly and fires can get out of control within minutes in hot and windy conditions." You can check fire restrictions with your local council and register your burn on 1800 668 511.
AusNet Services is working with the Victorian Government to install world-leading technology that will make our powerlines safer and reduce the risk of bushires. You’ll see our people working in the Mount Dandenong area over the next few months. There may be some disruption to trafic, and possibly to power supply, while we test the technology and upgrade the power lines. This new technology is being rolled out across communities most at risk of bushires. In some areas, it will be operational in time for summer. While AusNet Services and the Victorian Government believe this new technology will make a real difference in reducing the risk of bushires from powerlines, it does not eliminate all risk. It’s important to ensure your Bushire Plan is up to date. For updates on our progress, follow AusNet Services on Facebook. 12429340-FA43-19

New hub of caring By Derek Schlennstedt For Emerald resident Jayson Walmsley it was just one thing after another. "All I've been doing is getting knocked, and knocked and knocked, and when someone can help you and go in to bat for you it's everything." Five months ago Jayson (50) was unsure how he would feed himself. The bills and debts were piling up and it seemed that there were no resources or facilities available to him. When he walked into the foyer of the Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service everything changed. "I was in debt with a few weeks of rent, I had bills coming out of my ears, I had no money and I had nothing. " "I went to Centrelink in Belgrave and they couldn't help me with anything, so they gave me a pamphlet with DRERS on it. "I was that disheartened and down and pretty much crying and I come into here and they just sat down and were so kind and asked 'what's wrong, how can we help you?'" "When I walked out of here not only did I have a smile on my face, but my shoulders were back, I had two bags of groceries in my hands, a cheque in my back pocket for the rent, and a few vouchers in my pocket for Coles and Woolworths, and mate the feeling I had that somebody some community group really cares for me was overwhelming." While Jayson found DRERS many others in the hills don't, and Tania Bevan said there are many out there that were suffering or going without. "We find ourselves assisting more people who are homeless than ever before. Is it a rise in homelessness, or is it is just that more people who are homeless are aware of our service? Maybe both," Ms Bevan said. "Either way, it doesn't matter. What matters
Over 25 per cent obese By Derek Schlennstedt
From left: DRERS president, Frank Watson, Volunteers Helen Lutshesko, Cath Connelly, Selina Grimes, John Landon and DRERS manager Tania Bevan outside their new location at the Belgrave Hub. is that there are many people who are homeless, in all age groups, and we as a community must be able to do more to help." For Jayson he was able to find help and solace at DRERS and is facing a brighter path. His message to others in similar situations is quite simple: don't give up, and if you're able visit or donate to DRERS. "Anyone can come to DRERS for food, you don't have to starve and they clean you up and make you feel like a human." "They don't look down on you they help
you up. If you're a bit down or down trodden, just come in and see these people. There's some compassion and empathy here that you don't find very often and I thank everyone here for that." "The thing is if DRERs didn't help me I would've ended up in cardboard box in Spencer Street with nothing because I had nothing else," Jayson said. The Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service can be found at the bottom floor of the Belgrave Hub and is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 12:30pm.
According to the Australian Health Tracker over 25 percent of people in the Yarra Ranges are obese. The statistics were released ahead of World Obesity Day on 11 October. Yarra Ranges is below the national average of 36 percent, and obesity in youth in the Yarra Ranges was just over 6 percent. Professor Rosemary Calder from health policy think tank, the Mitchell Institute at Victoria University said action was needed to focus prevention strategies in the most disadvantaged communities. She said that the rate of obesity varies dramatically across the country and highlights the impact of where people live and wealth on people's health. "We have spent too long as a nation expecting individuals to be able to change their behaviour to reduce their weight," Professor Calder said. "However, the evidence is very clear that this has little chance of success without a very strong focus on the environmental factors in the places where we live that contribute to poor nutrition and inactivity." Professor Calder said policy change was needed at every level government. "The establishment of a national preventive health taskforce by the federal minister for health is an essential first step in the right direction. "It is vitally important that governments at all levels focus on collectively addressing the impact of where we live on our health." She said places with the highest rates of obesity also have much higher rates of smoking, inactivity and chronic illness.

By Derek Schlennstedt A new pilot program developed in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges is building relationships between young people leaving outof-home care, and locals who can help them achieve their goals. Brighter Futures Outer East is led by local community service Anchor with support from thirty other groups ranging from councils, community groups and small businesses, to the local football league. Anchor CEO, Heidi Tucker told the Mail that they were currently working with 25 young people in and around the Yarra Ranges, and in their first year had already seen great results. “In Brighter Futures Outer East, we sit down and listen to each young person and then help them make the right connections,” she said.

“Things like playing sports, exploring interests and getting work, the simple things all kids need a hand with.” “Every young person is different and we start with that understanding. There is no onesize-fits-all when it comes to someone working out what they want to do with their life. “This is something that many young people who have been in foster care, residential care or kinship care are missing. We are restoring something that other young people get from their birth families and family friends - but that young people who have been in out-ofhome care are often missing out on.” The Brighter Futures Pilot is an initiative that comes from a collaboration of the Outer Eastern Melbourne Children and Youth Area Partnership.
Youth Leader, Dylan Langley said community Connectors work with teens to help them identify their strengths, passions and goals. They then look for ways to connect the young person with local individuals, businesses or groups that can help them pursue and achieve their dreams. Examples of outcomes include learning about cars, getting work experience or their first job, doing a photography course, playing sport, developing their confidence and just getting more involved in local activities and community life He said it was great to see young people driving a change in the way services operate. “You can do the hard work yourself, but you need your community behind you to really succeed,” Mr Langley said.

The Mount Evelyn Primary School Vacation Care program celebrates five years. 198797 Picture: ROMY STEPHENS filmed a commercial of the program’s services which is set to be released later this month. Ms McDonald said the support from the school network and feedback from parents and children has been very positive over the years. “Children come to our three programs because they want to not because they have to,” she said. “The parents often say l can never get them
to leave.” With the school holidays now over, the school is preparing for its summer holiday program, which is already receiving enrollments from parents. The summer program is open to the community and will run during its usual hours, from 6.30am to 6.30pm. For more information, contact 9736 2233 or email osh@mtevelynps.vic.edu.au.

The Mt Evelyn Primary School gym was full of life on 4 October as the school celebrated five years since the opening of its Vacation Care program. Participating kids gathered in the gym with two jumping castles, a movie room, balloons, books and toys to not only celebrate the milestone but also send the holidays out with a bang. The school’s Vacation Care program has grown extensively since first opening, growing from 45 spaces to the 120 placement service it is today. It welcomes kids throughout the Dandenong Ranges and beyond, extending from Ringwood all the way out to Warburton. In July this year, the program’s services received a rating of ‘exceeding’ by the Department of Education. Melissa McDonald is the Mount Evelyn Primary School’s OSHC Coordinator. She said vacation care programs are vital for the modernday needs of parents. “Families requirements have changed since l started in this position a very long time ago,” she said. “A large percentage of families require two incomes which can be very tricky if you do not have a family support network. “Parents simply do not get vacation care periods off from work commitments to care for their children. “Vacation care is very affordable with the introduction of CCS subsidy and families know their children are having a fun and educational day.” The program at Mount Evelyn is run by a team with members who have a diploma in childhood education and care or are qualified teachers. They help put on a range of different activities for children outside of school hours including excursions, sports days and much more. Artisans showcase skills The Yarra Glen Racecourse will be buzzing with the sights and sounds of artists as the inaugural Yarra Valley Arts, Crafts and Antiques Expo (YVACCA) comes to life this month. The expo will see more than 160 highlyskilled artisans - including blacksmiths, jewellers and wood-turners - showcase their work at the expo which takes place on 19 and 20 October. Visitors will find a range of stalls featuring everything from oil and watercolour paintings to fine gold and silver jewellery, sculpture, leather goods (including hand-sewn jackets and trousers), fine adults and children's clothing, games, puzzles, vintage signs and much more. It's set to be a major event, with inquiries from potential stallholders coming from across Australia and even as far afield as North America. Director of the organising company Emmanuel Panourakis said his office had been busy fielding last-minute enquiries from exhibitors and stallholders that don't want to miss out on the inaugural event. "This is the start of a bi-annual premier event for our state and response has been even more enthusiastic than we anticipated," he said. "We have committed to run YVACCA at Yarra Valley Racing Centre, Yarra Glen, Spring and Autumn for the next ten years and we have already started taking bookings from exhibitors for Autumn." Entertainment will be a major feature of YVACCA with acts including the Black Kites and acoustic performer Steven Clark. The Fine Wine, Cheese and Beer Pavilion will prove to be a major attraction with numerous premier Victorian vineyards and craft breweries attending, including Pyrenees vine-

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
A tree of German delights Tree of Delights is a family-run and owned cafe located in the heart of Belgrave. Specialising in German baked goods, all of the cafe’s food is made in-store, using the same ingredients and traditional recipes the owner, Sonja Schaeffner, grew up with. Visitors that head to Tree of Delights can enjoy a selection of sweet and savoury traditional German street food and cakes, as well as coffee and more contemporary Australian delights. Some well-known German goods that visitors may find in-store include Bratwurst with Sauerkraut, classic German soft drink called Spezi, Bretzel and Weisswurst. For those who prefer sweeter items, there is a wide range of smoothies, shakes, ice cream and cakes, including the customer-voted favourite cheesecake. Sonja said the cafe was inspired by her upbringing in the German town of Konstanz and her mother Oma Gretel’s cooking. “Growing up, there was never a shortage of homemade German delights,” she said. “From bretzels to cakes, Oma Gretel’s kitchen is home to many fond childhood memories.” Sonja moved to Australia with her husband and daughter almost 20 years ago, before settling in Belgrave in 2006. She said she always dreamed to one day open a cafe that offered the handcrafted German food and drinks she so dearly missed from home. The cafe tables even have the names of her children and grandchildren on the tables instead of numbers. Sonja said that she hopes to create a place where other families and friends can come together and feel at home. For more information, visit the cafe’s Facebook page.

YARRA VALLEY PLANT FLAIR AND GARDEN EXPO
All set for plant fair This month, the second Yarra Valley Plant Fair will take place in Wandin. On 26 and 27 October, visitors can look and learn about the widest range of plants, how to use them, how to grow them and how they fit into a home garden. The event’s organisers, the Larkman family, are long term residents and nursery operators in the Yarra Valley and growers of all sorts of plants. They have invited people from all sectors of the nursery industry. Visitors can view thousands of different plants and talk to growers, collectors and breeders who have great knowledge of their plant types and are a wealth of information. There will also be talks from guest speaker Jane Edmanson each day at 11am. After her talks, Jane will wander around the fair doing mini-talks with different exhibitors and answering questions on modern gardening. Award-winning landscape designer Phillip Johnson will also talk about his designs at 1pm each day. Meanwhile, specialist growers will conduct talks on the main Seasol stage during the rest of the day. A large permaculture section will be on display with hourly presentations on permaculture design and growing. There will be experts displaying and advising on ancillary products like irrigation, lighting, design, fertiliser and so-on. Coffee, wine and beer stalls will be on offer so visitors can sit, eat good food, drink wine and talk about plants while looking across the Yarra Valley. Similar to the Herb and Chilli Festival, the

LUXE COUNTRY FARMHOUSE
DIVIDED into seven easy-to-work paddocks, this 23.5 acre (approx.) property features quality electric fencing, stock yard, spring fed dam and two large machinery sheds. It offers the perfect set-up for an equine retreat or hobby farm. The scene is set as you turn off the main road, through the gates and onto the remarkable Canadian Flame Tree lined driveway flanked by the two large front paddocks used for cutting hay annually yielding 70-plus rounds. The property currently accommodates 8 head of cattle, 3 horses and 20 plus sheep with the recent addition of a dozen lambs. Rarely do we see such a beautiful acreage property so well set up and ready for the next lucky owners to hit the ground running. There is even a healthy crop of asparagus that typically takes three years to establish. The honest, robust yet luxuriously appointed four bedroom rendered brick home has a flexible floor plan. The hotel style kitchenette in the second living space with cosy wood-fire and separate entrance through French-doors works as a parent’s retreat, Airbnb, accommodation for
guests or a dual occupancy situation. Tasmanian oak floors connect this space to the further three bedrooms and large main bathroom with impressive standalone bath, a whole wall of storage opposite the
European laundry corridors straight into the sizeable mudroom. The pièce de résistance is the super stylish kitchen with soft-close cabinetry, Caesarstone bench-tops and quality
stainless steel appliances looking out to the paddocks and livestock beyond. Prep your home-grown veggies and cook conventionally or stew on the slow combustion stove. Love it; buy it; live it. ●

ENTERTAINMENT
Street party nearly ready By Romy Stephens The Mount Evelyn Street Party is set to light up the town later this month, with stalls, stage performances, vibrant fashion, classic cars and much more. The free, biennial event will take place on Wray Crescent on the 27 October. The classic 1950s theme will once again return and help bring a colourful and vibrant atmosphere to the town. One of the event's many organisers, Michelle Puckey, said visitors can expect a bigger and better event this year. "Preparation-wise it's taken over a year to prepare an event like this. We're expecting in excess of 10,000 people," she said. "There will be more market stalls. "We've incorporated some great dance groups from the area, that will give people the opportunity to learn some dance steps. "Our fashion contest has grown to include everything from 0 up." The Mount Evelyn Street Party first started in 2001 as an event with a few market stalls and some entertainment. Michelle said since it was given the 1950s theme in 2015, it has transformed from a market to a festival. "The theme agreed on was the 1950s because of the family values and the colour and the music," she said. "It went down so well and attracted so many people from all over Victoria. "For families especially, the brightness, the colour and the music." This year's event will host over 160 sites dedicated to market stalls, two headline acts on the rock and roll stage - The Rockin' Tones
Drizzly day didn’t dampen spirits at this year’s fest By Derek Schlennstedt Despite a drizzly day, there was plenty of community spirit on show at this year's Selbyfest, which took place on 4 October. Families enjoyed the many activities offered on the day and cosied up inside the community house to enjoy live entertainment from numerous bands and music groups. There were stalls from local community members selling a range of wares including food, trinkets, clothing and bric a brac. Students from Selby Primary School, firefighters from the Selby Fire Brigade and volunteers from the Selby Community House were also present to share in the festivities and celebrate the unique community of Selby and surrounds. Reporter Derek Schlennstedt captured all the action form the day.
The street party will host fashion contests for Picture: GREG CARRICK all ages. 199056 and the Chuck Berry Review - and another stage dedicated to buskers, young kids and young bands. A free shuttle bus will run from Mount Evelyn Primary School and Birmingham Primary School to keep traffic off the streets and to avoid the chaos of trying to find a park on the day. The event will kick off with a community parade from 10am and will then run until 4pm. Michelle said the event aims to encourage inclusion and sustainability and people are encouraged to dress up. For more information, visit mtevelynstreetparty.com or visit the events Facebook page.

Gemini Man not a gem, man Gemini Man Starring Will Smith, Will Smith and Mary Elizabeth Winstead Rated M Gemini Man is a rare case of wildly uneven parts producing an engaging thriller whole. Retired government assassin Henry Brogan (Will Smith) must face off against a younger clone of himself (also Smith). On the surface, Gemini Man looks like a dumb '80s B-movie, but the film uses its absurd premise (and near-seamless doubling effects) to deliver some engaging character development. Henry is shaken by the world of tension and violence he is pulled back into, and the clone comes to question his life and purpose in some poignant scenes of self-reflection and vulnerability. However, when Henry and his clone finally talk about their history, Henry's attempt at
bonding falls flat, as he isn't developed enough for the character traits he describes to resonate with the audience. Clive Owen has an intimidating presence and a very inconsistent Bronx accent as Henry's former boss, the catalyst for the film's events is half-baked, and the film pulls a generic final enemy almost out of nowhere for the climax. The film is also poorly-structured, diluting the suspense with sudden, easy jumps to new locations. Exciting but uneven, the action sequences are well-choreographed, frenetic and feature impressive stunts and some arresting imagery, but some are shot clearly while others are jerky and hard to follow, and the gun battles are the slow weak-link. Gemini Man has solid performances and a compelling core of clashing identities, but the action and plot are extremely erratic. - By Seth Lukas Hynes
Trickster gets trumped as Gemco goes postal By Derek Schlennstedt From Gemco Theatre and best-selling author Sir Terry Pratchett comes a hilarious send-up of redemption in the age of technology. Going Postal is the story of arch-swindler Moist Von Lipwig (Richard Coyle) and the beautiful, vengeful Adora Belle Dearheart (Claire Foy). A life-long travelling con-artist, Lipwig's crimes finally catch up with him in the town of Ankh-Morpork. Faced with death by hanging, Lipwig is spared by Lord Vetinari (Charles Dance), who sees him as the perfect man for the role of Postmaster in the decrepit Ankh-Morpork post office. 18 MAIL

From Gemco Theatre and best-selling author, Sir Terry Pratchett, comes a hilarious send-up of redemption in the age of technology. With the help of a golem who has been at the bottom of hole in the ground for over two hundred years, a pin fanatic and Junior Post-
man Groat, he has to see that the mail gets through. Director Evie Housham spoke to the mail about the play and the importance of letters within the play and modern technology. "People used to write a lot of letters and this play is basically saying emails have taken over and the interest in hand written letters has disappeared, but letters are much more emotional - you can't put a pressed flower in an email or seal it with a kiss." "I think this particular play is talking about how money drives everything and that when money is involved people's safety and care disappear," she said. Of course, before he comes anywhere close to that success, Lipwig will have a multitude of
problems to overcome said Ms Housham. There is his parole officer - a golem made of clay that, like any other government official, is tireless in his sense of duty; there is undelivered mail which insists on talking to him; the shadowy characters from the Grand Trunk Company who want him deader than his dead letters, and his new "girlfriend" who sees straight through him. In the mad world of the mail, can a criminal succeed where honest men have failed and died? Join Gemco in this hilarious adventure from the world of famous author Sir Terry Pratchett. The play is held every weekend of October and to book go to https://www.gemcoplayers. org/whatson/2018/12/5/going-postal mailcommunity.com.au

SPORT
Locals lighting it up By Russell Bennett Ballistic action, heart-stopping excitement, and incredible skill - Sporting Horse Australia has it all in spades. The sport, which includes disciplines such as flag and barrel racing, is captivating crowds right across the country, and two local riders - and their incredible horses - are leading the way. Gembrook’s Matt Burns is also the current president of Sporting Horse Australia and he, alongside his Australian Stock Horse ‘The Enforcer’ (otherwise known as Rip), have won the Sporting Horse Australia Horse of the Year title three times. The two-time Australian champions are also three-time Australian champions in the flag and barrel race, two-time champions in the stake race, and also champions in the bending race. They know what it takes to not only compete when the pressure is at its highest, but to also come out on top. They’ve been the number one seed at the Royal Melbourne Show for three years running, and also finished in the top 20 in Barrel Racing Horse for the ABHA (Australian Barrel Horse Association) Australian Open event at the Equitana. Right there along with them at the top of their game is another brilliant local pairing that of Cardinia’s Teyah Murray and her horse ‘Devil in Disguise’, otherwise known as Pip. Yes, even their horses have almost identical names. Murray and Devil in Disguise are two-time winners of the Sporting Horse Australia Horse of the Year in the under-18 category, under-18 champions at this year’s Royal Melbourne Show, two-time national champions in the under-18 flag and barrel race, and the Australian champions in the stake race. They’ve also been the under-18 seed for two years running at the Royal Melbourne Show. Speaking to the Mail at the spectacular purpose-built, under cover arena on Burns’ ‘Grandview Park’ property recently, he and Murray explained the magic of their sport. “My daughter got involved in the sport originally, and I watched it, really enjoyed it, and started to get involved, myself,” Burns said of his roughly decade-long involvement so far. “It takes a bit of time to get on top of things,
Matt Burns and The Enforcer are an equestrian force to be reckoned with.
Local equestrian stars Teyah Murray (aboard 'Devil in Disguise') and Matt Burns (aboard 'The Enforcer') are taking the sport by storm. They're pictured here with The Enforcer's strapper, Makayla Moore. Pictures: RUSSELL BENNETT and even getting a horse up to speed can take a year or two.” Burns has competed on a few different horses along the way, but The Enforcer is special. “He’s just got a massive heart,” he said. “Every time he goes out to compete, he really does give 100 per cent. “I’ve had horses in the past that have been good, but only when they felt like it. Some days it felt like you just wouldn’t get 100 per cent.” Burns said The Enforcer had a real racer’s instinct. “He’s able to concentrate fully from the start of the race to the end, which is huge because at that speed it’s very easy to make mistakes,” he said. “It’s such a high intensity sport, so the horses have to be very skilful and agile to bend their way through the poles. Over a traveling distance of just 50 metres they have to turn at high speeds. “Just imagine sitting in a car trying to do
that - it’d be just about impossible - so sitting on a horse doing it is a huge thrill.” Clearly, this isn’t a sport for the faint-hearted. “You’ve got to get to the point where you’re at one with your horse,” Burns explained. “There’s got to be complete trust - especially at those speeds. “But the horses really enjoy the sport. There has been some still taking part at 20-years-ofage. We all love our horses and really look after them incredibly well.” Burns and The Enforcer rose to the top of the sport particularly quickly - with their achievements together coming in the past few years. And Murray’s rise with Devil in Disguise has been just as phenomenal. “We’ve been involved for about five years now,” she said. “She was taking part with her previous owner and she went up for sale, and I’ve been
racing with her for three years now.” Murray said she and Devil in Disguise have been taking part in other events outside of the sport as well, helping to make the duo a more rounded team. “Things like trail riding, going to the beach, and a lot of work outside of the sport,” she said. “We do a lot to change things up.” The contrast of Pip’s name to her racing name perfectly sums up her competitive streak. Burns spoke about the consistency Murray and Devil in Disguise had found together - putting that down to the tireless work the young rider has been putting in. “Teyah has turned her into an amazing horse - every turn she makes is bang-on, she just rarely does anything wrong. She was fast, but now she’s just so consistent too.” Murray said another of her horse’s standout traits is her seemingly never-ending stamina. “She’s got a huge heart - she’ll keep going until I have to tell her to stop,” she said. It’s only fitting that Pip and Rip’s biggest defining traits are so similar. When they’re together, they’re practically inseparable - like two peas in a pod. Despite being from different generations, Burns and Murray also have a clear bond over their shared love of competition, and it’s one that’s set to spur them on to even greater heights for years to come.
A weekend of wins for Monbulk Bowlers By Eric Markham Monbulk 1, who have been recently promoted to Division 1, made the trip to Caulfield Park on Tuesday. A brief shower temporarily halted the start but once the match started, Monbulk jumped out to an early lead. After 12 ends the side led by eight shots and by the 33rd end this had jumped out to 17 shots. Caulfield Park reduced this lead to only six shots by the 60th end but Monbulk held on to win by the same margin of six shots, 60 to 54. Richard Cookson's rink won a five on the first end and then with some excellent bowling from the skip were able to record a comfortable victory by 14 shots, 25 to 11. Andrew Bell's rink led all day and was 10 shots ahead with eight ends to go. However, they did not score again and lost on the final end by two shots to go down 18 to 20. Eric Markham's rink started well but after dropping a five on the fifth end were not able to regain the lead to go down by 6 shots, 17 to 23. Monbulk 2 played away from home against Ferntree Gully in what was a very close contest. Di Bigelow's rink was quickly into action and by the sixth end led by eight shots. Ferntree Gully then lifted its performance and by the eleventh end scores were level. Monbulk then raised the standard and won the next five ends to eventually win by six shots, 22 to 16. Eric Furby's rink led by 6 shots after the ninth end. 22 MAIL

They then lost eight of the next nine ends to be seven shots down with only three ends to play. They then stormed home to win the last three ends by eight shots to grab victory by one shot, 20 to 19. Graeme Goller's rink was involved in a nail biter. They were six shots down after the eleventh end but won the next five ends to hit the front by one shot. Graeme's rink lost four of the next five ends, but a great four on the nineteenth end put them in front but the last two ends were won by their opponents which meant the game ended in a tie, 17 shots each. Monbulk won the overall by 7 shots, 59 to 52.
Monbulk 3 played Chirnside Park at home in a rain-interrupted affair. Anne Ward's rink trailed by seven shots after the eleventh end but then won seven of the next 10 ends to run out winners by five shots, 23 to 18. Ray Pikes rink dominated the opposition winning 15 of 21 ends to run out comfortable winners by 18 shots, 26 to 18. This meant that Monbulk 3 had an overall win by 24 shots, 74 to 50. After a win in Round 1 of Saturday pennant against Mitcham, Monbulk 1 travelled to Lilydale. Monbulk started well across all rinks and after 32 ends led by 18 shots. Lilydale then
lifted their intensity and turned it into a close contest. Andrew Bell's rink kept control for most of the afternoon only dropping 6 ends to win by 13 shots, 24 to 11. Eric Markham's rink led by 10 shots after the eighth end but this is where it ended with Lilydale winning eleven of the next thirteen ends to overwhelm the Monbulk rink by 11 shots, 27 to 16. Brian Smith's rink were level after nine ends but then Lilydale grabbed the ascendancy winning 7 of the next 10 ends to run out winners by 13 shots, 26 to 13. Richard Cookson's rink were the stars of the day controlling the contest after scores were level after the ninth end. They then won 9 of the next 12 ends including a 6 on the 19th end to win by 20 shots, 34 to 14. This meant Monulk won the overall by 9 shots, 34 to 14. Monbulk 2 played Mitcham at home and won the overall by 14 shots, 92 to 78 to record their second win in two starts. Monbulk 3 played Warburton at home and were able to take the points by 16 shots due to the excellent bowling from Alan Brookes rink which included Bev Chancellor and Darren Ward. Monbulk has a Try Bowls Day on 27 October between 11am and 3pm. All are welcome to participate with free coaching and all bowls supplied. Night Owl bowls will start on 7 November at 7.30pm. mailcommunity.com.au

Bears’ day over Knights By Richard Millott The Basin overcame Knoxfield in a thrilling chase to conclude the Opening Round of FTGDCA action. Set 189 by the Knights the week before, the Bears were 1/61 before the Knights bowlers swung into action, claiming 5/23 to have the advantage with the score at 6/84. New acquisition Trent Atkinson sent down 21 overs for a return of 5/46 to pressure the Premiers. However, Joey Hawke (42) and Jason Lee (30*) steered the Bears clear of the required target, the day concluding at 8/190. Knox Gardens sit atop the ladder after Round 1 after closing out its encounter with Eildon Park. With 7/276 on the board already, the Pan-
thers steadily went about their business against the Falcon attack, however, Scott McInerney proved to be the thorn in the side for the Panther batsmen, claiming 5/53 as Eildon Park were dismissed for 236. Lysterfield celebrated its return to Norm Reeves Shield with a victory against Upwey. Set 148 as a target, the Beavers commenced from 3/38 with Nathan Walsh returning into the runs. Walsh's 57 lifted the Beavers to the target, reaching 7/148 to bank the six points. Belgrave completed their opening assignment against Johnson Park, with Luke Manion starting with the ball. With 255 on the board, the Magpie bowlers went to work again having the Sharks at 2/23 before Andrew and Steven Devenish teamed
up to build the innings. Andrew Devenish struck 63 to lead the way, however, the bowlers influenced the day to dismiss Johnson Park for 178. Luke Manion claimed 5/35 to heavily restrict the middle order. Ferntree Gully Footballers held off Upper Ferntree Gully for opening round honours, dismissing the Kings 44 runs short. Early going was tough for the Kings with the Griffens on top with the ball as the hosts slumped to 4/22 before Matt Beyer (47) and later Byron Rickard (42*) restored the scoreline. Ben Rawlings (3/28) and Ashen Abeykoon (3/37) were the main contributors for the Griffens, who dismissed the Kings for 220. In Decoite Shield, a Jayden Bradbury century helped guide Ferntree Gully to a strong win
against Mountain Gate at Wally Tew Reserve. Set 217 by the Gators, an early wicket was replaced by one-way traffic as Bradbury joined Josh Henry (86) and later Harry Cowling (60*) to close out the match at 4/309, Bradbury ending up on 125*. Knox Gardens prevailed in a tight encounter with Rowville, claiming points by just 4 runs, while Monbulk claimed bragging rights in their local derby with Olinda. Meanwhile, South Belgrave declared their stumps score in an attempt at maximum points against St Johns Tecoma. With the result already determined, South went on the attack however a much-improved Saints response saw them post 1/166 across the afternoon before play came to a halt, with Jake Sali (62*), Tyson Smith (54) and Kyle Chandler (41) all making contributions.
Young sports excel in athletics fun at Mt Evelyn By Jamie Strudley It was a big turnout for Round 2 of Little Athletics at Morrison Reserve, Mt Evelyn, on Saturday. Impressive numbers in each age group made the atmosphere and experience fun for both athletes and parents. There were plenty of excellent performances and efforts from all athletes as they strived to set the targets to beat for the next event. Next week, is the Yarra Ranges Athletics Club's first 'Bring a Friend Day' so participants are encouraged to ask a neighbour or friend if they would like to come along for a trial. The club's seniors travelled to Casey Fields and Doncaster for Round 2 of the AVSL Shield competition. It was a special welcome to new members
Meg Sparkes, Matisse Gardiner and Jordan White-Coath. The Open women 4 x 200m record was broken at Casey Fields about 3pm with a team of Georgia Laven, Matisse Gardiner, Kathi Hewitson and Madeline Laven running 2.05.85. It was then broken again by Ashleigh Rooke, Hayley Wilkins, Sarah Rollo, Ciara Willey running 2.00.53 at Doncaster about 4.30pm, which also broke the W18 record. ley (M50 400 62.10). All up, 10 records broken on just the second round of the season. Next week, the club is fortunate enough to be hosting a round of AVSL Shield at it's Morrison Reserve venue. Invite entries and on the day entries are possible, however, it is always better to preenter at athsvic.org.au. This is an opportunity for anyone 12 years or older to see what all the fun is about on home soil and to compete with athletes from throughout the state. Registrations are open for both Little Athletics (lavic.com.au) and the club's senior team via Athletics Victoria (athsvic.org.au). The club welcomes and encourages all athletes of any age or ability.
