A Narre Warren South man has recounted the terrifying moment his car was rammed by thugs moments after ransacking his home. Bruce Sayers had been out Halloween shopping with his 14-year-old daughter at Casey Central when they returned to their England Walk home to find a BMW blocking their driveway about 7.30pm on Saturday 12 October. Mr Sayers, 46, spoke to the female passenger who said: "Oh we're looking for David, we're going out". "To me that meant: 'Yeah OK they're lost'," he said, still wondering where the driver was. He said a man then appeared from the back of his home, "and threw boxes of stuff in the car" saying to the passenger "we've gotta go, gotta go." Fearing for his daughter's safety who was sitting in the front passenger seat, Mr Sayers tried to move his Commodore which was parked across the driveway. "I wasn't quick enough and they reversed at speed into my car," he said. "They went forward and reversed into my car again, and kept their foot on the accelerator trying to push my car sideways out of the way." The thugs then tore over his garden before smashing the water meter and driving off. Mr Sayers followed the car thinking it would come to an abrupt stop after being severely damaged. "They went down a dead end court and did a U-turn and on their way back they hit my car a third time. They've popped a tyre and done a fair bit of damage," he said. "There was the shock of my god what the hell's happened?" Luckily Mr Sayers and his daughter were not injured. The bandits stole his daughter's school bag and laptop, her school uniform, and dance uniform as well as one dance shoe. "That's probably the biggest loss because everything else is stuff you can't really put a price on," he said, which included a handmade leather wallet from Africa passed on by his mother and an Olympic relay baton.

What is your involvement in art within the community? I am a member of the Berwick Artist's Society and about 30 of us meet each Thursday and help each other. What's your preferred subject matter/theme and what's some of your favourite pieces you have created? The subject matter I use comes from what's happening around me for example I did a pastel on the cost of the drought and another on the devastation of the bush fires. Where do you find your inspiration? My inspiration comes from the beauty of the Australian landscapes and the interesting people I meet. What's your favourite holiday spot in Australia? In Victoria camping along the Murray River and Camping on Lake Kununurra WA. What is your favourite book? Memoirs of a Geisha At school I ... was told I couldn't draw and so I didn't start art until after I was 50. What's your favourite movie? The Dressmaker What's something people don't know about you? I opened and managed a licensed cafe for eight years. If you were PM for a day, what would you do? I would look at ways of reducing plastic containers of all types and emphasise that we all need to be mindful about purchasing those products that impact the footprint each of us leaves behind. Best concert or live show you have attended? Les Miserables the musical.

A lump isn't the only sign of breast cancer. Changes in skin texture, including scaly skin around the nipple and areola or skin thickening in any part of the breast, could also be an early indicator. There may also be dimpling or indentation, a rash, unusual redness or other colour changes according to Cancer Council NSW.

2

Cancer Council NSW says changes to the nipple may be present, including a change in shape, crusting, sores or ulcers, redness, a clear or bloody discharge, or a nipple that is inverted when it used to stick out.

3

Women might also experience persistent, unusual pain that is unrelated to their normal monthly menstrual cycle, remains after their period and occurs in one breast only. If you notice any signs and are concerned, visit your GP as soon as possible.

Girl arrested following assault Police has charged a girl following an assault outside a shopping in Cranbourne on Wednesday 9 October. The victim was standing at a crossing when eight females aged between 12-16 years old approached her 5.30pm. One of the females walked up to the victim and demanded she hand over her phone, police say. The victim refused and the female assaulted the victim. Police attended the scene shortly after and arrested the female. The girl was charged with robbery, assault, and affray and bailed to face the Children's Court at a later date. "I've done the easy part, honest to God, that's the best way I can describe it," he said, adding "she gets off her a---e and does all the hard work." BK 2 Basics has also created a GoFundMe page for people to donate towards a new delivery car as the current one is a "little sick".

Emilia celebrates 100 remarkable years By Brendan Rees Emilia Pascual has celebrated her 100th birthday in the company of family and friends. A special tea party was held for the grandmother at her residence at Viewhills Manor Aged Care Home in Endeavour Hills on Friday 11 October. Mrs Pascual, was all smiles as other residents joined the milestone celebration which featured a sponge cake, and an entertainer who performed some classical hits. She was born in Appari Cagayan, a small province in the Philippines on 14 October, 1919, and lived in the capital Manila for most of her life before migrating to Australia in February 1980. She finished school early and married Mariano Pascual, an engineer, and had six children and 19 grandchildren. Her daughter, Cherry Kelly, said her mum's

secret to a long life was being "surrounded with very loving family," adding she had never smoked or had alcohol in her life. "Mum is loved by so many family and friends for being so kind and loving," she said. "Mum is so proud of her family to keep her standing up to this moment and continue to look after her and making the most of it even happier." Mrs Pascual doesn't have many hobbies but loves playing the pokies "as she looks forward of getting dressed," and "meeting people". Ms Kelly said a highlight of her mum's life was being coronated as a beauty queen in her younger life. Her carer Lucy Wilhelm, said she never missed a Catholic Mass session, and had a "great heart." "She goes for walks everywhere, she cooks up her own food in the microwave ... she's very independent," she said.

A Casey food charity that was run out of a carport but told by council to shut its doors has now been thrown a cash lifeline. BK 2 Basics Melbourne founder Kelly Warren couldn't believe her ears when a stranger offered to pay $120,000 for three years lease at a new warehouse. In July, Casey Council ordered the not-forprofit pantry - which was then being run out of a residential carport - to be closed down before 26 August as it did not meet planning scheme requirements and were "responding to complaints". Council at time said it would try to link Bk 2 Basics with another organisation. Since moving into their new warehouse on Vesper Drive on 1 October, which is more than 10 times bigger, Ms Warren said they were helping up to 200 people a day. And this is all thanks to Joe Calleja, a 64-year-old Dandenong businessman, who was touched by the charity's services. "He's messaged me first and he turned up at the pantry and just said 'come on jump in the car we're going to a warehouse'," Ms Warren said. "Both of us went and he asked me where I wanted to go and I said 'around Narre Warren.' "So he came down here and this is the first warehouse that we saw. He rang up the real estate and it was all done, deal within five minutes," she said. "You think people that got lots of money will flaunt it ... honestly he's just like you and me, you would never ever know," she said. Mr Calleja was born in war-torn Malta, where his family experienced hardship. His family migrated to Melbourne 1963, when he was aged eight. His first job was a forklift operator when he was 18, and today he runs a Dandenong-based, national steel distribution company.

Vets and nurses at Australian Animal Protection Society have saved the life of a critically injured puppy abandoned in a cardboard box. The six-week-old Rottweiler dubbed 'Bear' had suffered "gruesome injuries" when he was found by a passer-by next to a park in Hampton Park on 9 October. "The Good Samaritan noticed the puppy in the box on the side of the road on her way to work around 8am that morning, and on her way home at 1:30pm it was still there," an AAPS spokesperson Charlie Keele said. When taken to the Dandenong Southbased AAPS, Bear was "clinging to life". He was rushed into surgery. "Unfortunately, Bear's injuries were quite gruesome," Ms Keele said. Car crashes into home By Brendan Rees A young couple woke in shock when a car ploughed into their Berwick home on Sunday 13 October. Leon Li and his wife Vivian Zhai were asleep in the upstairs bedroom of their Soldiers Road when they were woken by a bang around 7.45am. Police say the 22-year-old driver travelled across a roundabout and smashed into the front of the house. "No one was injured in the incident although the house was extensively damaged. Investigators believe that fatigue may be a contributing factor in the collision," Senior Sergeant Nicole Warner said. A 22-year-old Clyde man is expected to be charged on summons with careless driving. Remarkably, no one was injured during the incident. According to Narre Warren SES controller Damian Burn, airbags were deployed in the car

SES volunteers with the couple and their pet dogs following the ordeal. and the driver managed to get out unscathed. "He was very apologetic and he did not leave the scene," he said. Firefighters from Beaconsfield CFA brigade were called in to help rescue couple's pet dogs upstairs while Narre Warren State Emergency Service volunteers helped stabilised the house and remove the rubble. Barry Sutherland, Narre Warren SES crew leader, said there "were so many things that could go wrong."

"When we saw a glimpse of a framed wedding photo under the rubble our first thoughts were that it may have been damaged beyond repair, it was such a relief to find it undamaged," Mr Sutherland said. "When we told the couple, the look of happiness and relief on their faces cemented why we do what we do as volunteers." It took about two hours for SES volunteers to clear most of the damaged brickwork and smashed glass.

Cranbourne line commuters feel train pain Just over one train, on average, was abruptly cancelled on the Cranbourne train line every day in September - which has been labelled one of the "worst on the entire rail network". New figures, released by Public Transport Victoria on 10 October revealed Cranbourne's punctuality rate was 84.5 per cent - up 1.1 per cent from August. The result was substantially short of Metro Trains' performance benchmark of 92 per cent. Overall, 41 trains were cancelled for the month on the Cranbourne line. Public Transport Users Association spokes-

man Daniel Bowen said passengers continued to suffer from "late and crowded trains," on Cranbourne line which was "some of the worst on the entire rail network." "This is in no small part thanks to the single track sections on the line, which play havoc with cascading delays and limit the number of services that can run. It's good to hear that the government is working on duplication - it has waited far too long, and can't come soon enough," he said. Opposition Transport spokesman David Davis labelled the results as "an appalling rail fail on the Cranbourne line under Labor." "In 2019, there have been 1567 cancelled,

SAFER POWERLINES TO REDUCE THE RISK OF BUSHFIRES

short runs, bypasses and slips - so far," he said. For the second consecutive month, Metro Trains will pay compensation to passengers for failing to deliver 90 per cent of its services on time - including eligible Cranbourne line commuters. Following a number of challenging months, the Minister for Public Transport Melissa Horne directed the Department to work closely with Metro to improve their performance. "Metro needs to continue to work hard to improve its performance and we will continue to ensure they have the plans in place to do so," Mr Weimar said. Under its previous contracts, Metro Trains

would not be required to pay compensation for September's level of performance. Passengers are advised to visit the Metro Trains website to claim compensation. A Metro spokesperson said September saw improvements "to reliability and punctuality" on the Cranbourne line - "but we're still not delivering the level of service ourpassengers deserve." "There were far too many disruptions during the month, including a significant number of trespasser and police incidents which delayed our passengers," the spokesperson said. Metro said it was "workingharder than ever" to give passengers a more reliable service.

AusNet Services is working with the Victorian Government to install world-leading technology that will make our powerlines safer and reduce the risk of bushires. You’ll see our people working in the Narre Warren and Beaconsield area over the next few months. There may be some disruption to trafic, and possibly to power supply, while we test the technology and upgrade the power lines. This new technology is being rolled out across communities most at risk of bushires. In some areas, it will be operational in time for summer. While AusNet Services and the Victorian Government believe this new technology will make a real difference in reducing the risk of bushires from powerlines, it does not eliminate all risk. It’s important to ensure your Bushire Plan is up to date. For updates on our progress, follow AusNet Services on Facebook.

On Thursday 10 October a story was shared to the Berwick Star News Facebook page about the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal upholding Casey Council's decision to stop a property developer from building houses next to the Hampton Park tip. Here is how our readers responded: Mark Mathews: And people moving into the area should look and see that there is a tip and should expect noise and smells. It's not a rose farm after all. Peter McKill: At last some lateral thinking. I am 5 kilometres away and can smell it on still damp nights. Danny Chamoun: It is sickening most nights of the week, how can this go on. Renee Charlize Newbury: It's a rubbish tip. Lorna Arancibia: So glad I moved when I did - wasn't too bad when I was there but that was 10 yrs ago. Sharon Gee: It's bad enough driving past the tip. Vents closed, you can still smell it. I don't know how neighbouring communities put up with it. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Casey’s crime rate up By Brendan Rees Just over four burglaries and more than 20 thefts occurred day on average over the past 12 months in Casey, latest crime statistics have revealed. Police also detected 726 weapons and explosives offences which were up 11.6 compared to last year. Overall recorded offences in Casey went up 2.9 per cent in the 12 months to June, with deceptions more than doubling, according to a Crime Statistics Agency report, Victoria Police Deputy commissioner Shane Patton police were focusing on home invasions, carjackings and robberies across the state. "These are opportunistic crimes. We believe we've got our policing model right," he said.

Deputy Commissioner Patton said it was "about tracking them (offenders) down," adding they "embark on what I would call a spree and then stay on it for days until we actually get them." He said Operation Tidal, a high visibility police presence across the Casey, Greater Dandenong and Cardinia police service areas, was making "great inroads" with 543 arrests since the operation started and more than 187 warrants executed. Deputy Commissioner Patton said aggravated burglaries remained "largely stable" and police were targeting home invasion offenders. "The overwhelming majority of non-aggravated burglaries; they do not involve any form of violence and less than two per cent of them

are confrontational. I don't say that to diminish the crime, it's come down slightly and we want it to come down more," he said. Alarmingly in Casey, there were 7,538 assaults in the year period - more than 144 a week. And more than 20 drug use and possession offences a week. Robberies went up marginally by 44 offences. On the decline were assaults (2.2 per cent), burglaries (5.2 per cent), and property damage (1.8 per cent) compared to last year. Deputy Commissioner Patton said the crime data did however show the lowest victimisation rate, a decrease of 1.5 per cent but emphasised they were not "just statistics ... the reality is we know these are people, these are victims of crime." "We know there's a lot more for us to do and

will continue to try and target the offending to make it a safer community," he said. Police and Emergecy Services Minister Lisa Neville said although police were "processing more offenders than ever," family violence was on the rise, making up "almost 50 per cent of crimes against the person." Gembrook MP Brad Battin said crime in Casey was "out of control" and called on the State Government to build a new police station in Casey. "When it comes to aggravated burglary Casey has the unenviable position of the highest number offences in the state," he said. "Even our police are not safe with 80 reports of assaults on police and emergency service workers in the City of Casey," adding "how can Daniel Andrews spruik all is all ok?"

Slow moo-ver Clyde the runaway cow now living on clover By Mitchell Clarke A steer affectionately named Clyde who caused peak hour chaos on the Monash is destined to spend the rest of his days in lush green paddocks. Traffic was brought to a standstill as authorities worked to coerce the rogue bovine away from a certain death near Clyde Road at 6.30am on Friday 11 October. Almost three hours later, wildlife carers were able to put a rope around the steer and secure him to a fence before loading it onto a trailer just before 10am. Clyde is now recovering in the hands of a wildlife carer in Emerald as authorities launch an investigation as to how the animal found himself dicing with death on one of the state’s busiest freeways. It’s believed the animal jumped from a truck which could have been on its way to an abattoir, but authorities are also investigating whether he escaped from nearby farms. A Warriors 4 Wildlife spokesperson told the Gazette the cow suffered quite a lot of bruising and bleeding from the wild adventure. “We’re confident he’s going to make a full recovery, if he had any serious injuries he’d likely be down by now,” she said. An eyewitness who drove past the scene reported the animal looking “miserable and confused”. “He was just stood at the fence with the police behind him yelling at motorists. His eyes were closed and he had blood on him,” he said. “There were obviously a lot of motorists keen to see what was going on. “Hopefully the authorities do the right thing and allow the animal to live a happy life on a sanctuary.” Traffic controller Rickii Hard was the first on scene and called VicRoads immediately. “The police thought it wasn’t well but I thought it just seemed tired, like it had been on a mission to get to where it was,” he said. He hoped the animal wouldn’t be destroyed claiming it looked like it just needed a “good

Not to mention the stress of where it was and the traffic picking up.” Some motorists weren’t as forgiving as others, with the traffic seeing the 10 minute drive from Pakenham to Officer turning into almost an hour commute. “Goes to show how vulnerable our transport infrastructure is. CCTV catches booze theft Detectives from Casey Crime Investigation Unit are seeking help from the public following a burglary at a Berwick restaurant in August. Investigators have been told two people broke into the premises on High Street about 12.50am on Tuesday 24 September. Once inside the pair stole cash and used a shopping trolley and milk crates to remove a large quantity of alcohol, police say. Detectives have released images and CCTV of two people they believe may be able to assist with their inquires. Anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

CCTV footage appears to capture two people stealing alcohol and cash.

Man charged over burgs A 23-year-old man has been charged following two aggravated burglaries in Narre Warren and Berwick. Police allege a car was stolen during a burglary that occurred on Donatello Crescent in Narre Warren on Monday 7 October in the early hours of the morning. It is also alleged the same offender stole a car, BMX and the victim's handbag during an aggravated burglary on Kerferd Street in Berwick on Wednesday 9 October. Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged the Berwick man with 13 charges, including two counts of theft of motor vehicle, two counts of aggravated burglary - person present, possess cannabis and other related offences. He has been remanded in custody to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates' Court on Thursday 10 October. This arrest is part of Operation Tidal which utilises a highly visible police presence across

The pair help themselves to alcohol.

Contested: Man faces 1980s child sex charges He noted the "protracted" six year span of the alleged abuse, the multiple offences as well as the ages of the victim and the accused and "mode" of the relationship. Mr Vandersteen said he was not certain that a magistrates' court could impose an adequate sentence, if the man was found guilty. He questioned why prosecutors hadn't laid more serious charges such as sexually penetrating a child. "I'll be having that conversation with the OPP (the Office of Public Prosecutions". The accused man was ordered to appear at a filing hearing, ahead of the case being heard at the County Court of Victoria. He will appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 25 October.

the Casey, Greater Dandenong and Cardinia Police Service Areas (PSAs). Tidal is an ongoing operation and police will continue to focus resources where they're most needed.

A former Narre Warren fish-and-chip shop worker has been accused of the historical sexual abuse of an 8-year-old girl through to her early teens. The sexual assaults, allegedly performed in a caravan in a residential backyard, date from the late 1980s to the early 1990s, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard on 15 October. The accused man - now in his late forties - is contesting the multiple charges of indecently assaulting a child. He had been aged between 17-24 years at the time of the alleged abuse. At the contest mention, magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the allegations were too serious to be heard in the Magistrates' Court.

On Friday night, 11 October, another $125,000 was added to the Casey Cardinia Foundation’s coffers to distribute to the local community, the proceeds from its 16th annual charity dinner at the Cardinia Cultural Centre. The fundraising is expected to top $70,000 and another $55,000 was presented by the now defunct Herb Thomas Memorial Trust, marking the end of an era. The Herb Thomas Trust was set up after the death of the former Gazette proprietor in 1979 and for the next four decades distributed grants under his name to those aspiring to careers in the print and media industries. Trustees decided earlier this year that, due to changes in the industry and rules governing trusts, it was no longer sustainable. Trust chairman Roger Hall handed the remaining funds to Herb’s grandson Paul Thomas, as current Foundation chairman, at Friday night’s dinner. “We are most grateful that the funds that remained in the Trust have been given to the Foundation for disbursement as grants to the local community,” Mr Thomas said. A grant will now be issued each year by the Foundation in the name of the Trust, with the first going to the Casey North Information and Support Service for a program for women to assist with the prevention of family violence and family breakdown. In addition to the $80,000 that was distributed to those impacted by the Bunyip fires in March, the Foundation will provide $68,459 to not-for-profit groups. That represents a record $148,459 distributed by the Foundation this year. Funding was announced for 17 organisations. The Mick Morland Memorial went to Grant Concern Australia to contribute towards Hand Brake Turn Mobile, taking automotive training into local communities delivering workshops at schools, community hubs and sport clubs. That was presented by Mick’s daughter Rebecca Sanders and son Luke Morland. Mr Morland, a long-term City of Casey councillor and mayor, was killed in a car accident in 2017. In his memory a special grant was established due to the generous donations from the local community and the City of Casey. The Cardinia Casey Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch Committee donated more than $16,000 to three men’s health organisations through the grants process, which went to the Akoonah Park Men’s Shed, Hillview Bunyip Aged Care and the Endeavour Hills Men’s Shed. Committee chairman Garry Howe said the Men’s Shed movement had now become one of the most powerful tools in addressing health and wellbeing and helping men to once again become valued and productive members of our community. Other grants went to: The Ace Foundation - to run a program to provide reading glasses to the disadvantaged. Dream Harmony - which will undertake two Eid Prayers for 500 people. Berwick was the worst-affected suburb in the state last year for storm-related insurance claims, according to new data. Statistics from AAMI reveal Berwick has consistently remained in the top five over the past three years, moving up from third place in 2017 and 2018 to claim the number one spot this year. "Although our claims data showed some areas consistently copped a battering when it came to storms, the very nature of these types of weather events are unpredictable and can happen anywhere," AAMI spokesperson Angela Wilkinson said. "Our message to all Victorians is to take the time now to prepare their homes ahead of storm season. "Thunderstorms, hailstorms and accompanying high winds and lightning don't need to be severe or last long to cause serious damage." VIC SES chief officer of operations Tim Wiebusch said the data "speaks volumes at the level of destruction that severe weather can cause". "With the warmer weather, we often see these types of weather events continue long after the colder seasons," he said. "This is why it's important to stay informed about your local situation. The best way to be ready for storms, is to prepare your home." You can prepare your home by cleaning out gutters, locking down any loose items and parking vehicles undercover away from trees. "Ensure you keep up general maintenance

around the home, check the condition of your roof and replace any damaged or missing tiles because if you do need to make a claim for storm damage, insurance won't cover you for any pre-existing damage," Ms Wilkinson added. "Often, intense rainfall during severe weather events leads to flash flooding, damaging or washing away roads and bridges, along with floodwaters containing sewage and debris. "Remember, it can take just 15cm of water to cause a small car to lose traction. The decision to drive through flash floodwaters could be the last decision you make." Top tips for storm season: Trim overhanging trees and branches Clean out gutters and downpipes Secure or put away any loose items outside Check your roof is in a good condition Get hold of documents like marriage certificates and wills and put them in something watertight Take photos of any important receipts or precious items Check your insurance is strong enough to cover you in the event of a storm - don't be underinsured or out of date If your area floods, check where there's high ground and get to know where your community shelters and meeting points are.

Six decades of love By Danielle Kutchel A love story that began on a glitzy night in Dandenong has just celebrated its 60th chapter. Val and Graeme Pownceby are still very much in love, six decades down the track, and are proud of their milestone and their life together. Now living in Narre warren, they met at a dance at the Dandenong Scout Hall one Wednesday night when they were both 17. Asked if they remember what they thought when they first saw each other, Graeme grins and chuckles, "I'll tell you that later!" Val admits she had her eye on someone else on the day, but he wasn't interested in her. Graeme asked her for a dance, and the rest is history. "We went together for about two and a half, three years. My parents said we could never get married until we turned 21. My sister did the right thing, but they loved Graeme so much they weakened and so we got married when I was only 20," she reminisces. Graeme's best friend since kindergarten was the best man, and they all still catch up each week for a drink and some nibbles, six decades later. It's a respected tradition in the two households, and Graeme says you have to have a good excuse to get out of it. Two boys came along soon after the wedding, with a bit of a gap before their youngest, a daughter, was born. Graeme worked as a cabinet maker for his whole life, right up until his retirement. Val worked as a secretary for a debt collector before leaving the workforce, but went back in later years to work in catering for the racing industry, where she stayed for 28 years. They now have five beautiful grandkids, and hope that great-grandkids will be along in the future. In 60 years, the couple says they have never had a big fight. "Any day now!" Graeme jokes. Asked what the secret to a happy marriage is, Graeme says that every night, they would have a drink between 4.00pm and 5.00pm, sit-

Val and Graeme are still as much in love as they were on their wedding day, 60 years ago. 198952 ting and talking with each other. "It only lasted 20 minutes, but it was every night and we liked doing that," Val explains. Now retired, the couple enjoys travelling first in a caravan but now on cruise ships that take them to ports around the world.

And their passion for one another is still just as strong as it was in the heady early days of their courtship. "We've done a lot, and we're happy. I still love him," Val says with a soft smile, and Graeme softly agrees.

"The world definitely changed that day, and not for good." That's how Cranbourne resident Tracey Ryan recalls the day she was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, back in 2010. Aged just 47 at the time, her life and those of her family and friends were turned upside down. While she lives with her diagnosis, she says you don't ever come to terms with advanced cancer. "It's always there. I go to bed with it, I wake up with it. I don't get a break from cancer," Ms Ryan says. Following her diagnosis, Ms Ryan underwent chemotherapy and a double mastectomy. But the cancer metastasised to her bones, liver, and lungs and her diagnosis is now terminal. Just before Mother's Day 2018, she had her left lung removed due to the discovery of a new primary cancer. "My body is getting very tired. It's telling me it's had enough, I think," she says. Although she can't work, Ms Ryan fills her days with charity work, promoting breast cancer awareness. She's lending her voice to National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which began on 1 October. New data from the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) shows that 30,000 more lives could be lost to breast cancer by 2030 without adequate research investment. The data also shows that a woman's risk of breast cancer is now one in seven, up from one in eight last year. Eight women die every day from the disease, which is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia. NBCF has set an ambitious target of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. It is investing in cutting-edge research projects to achieve this goal, including analysing data from across the country to identify trends and factors contributing to lower survival. The organisation will also fund a significant amount of research into the most aggressive breast cancer subtypes to improve detection and treatment, particularly in metastatic and triple-negative breast cancers. In addition, top fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands have teamed up with NBCF during Breast Cancer Awareness month to raise additional much-needed funds for research by donating proceeds from the sale of special edition pink products. Ms Ryan says women - and men - need to be vigilant and check for signs of breast cancer, and follow their instincts if they feel something isn't right. "Don't take no for an answer. You know your body better than anyone. If you don't feel it's right, keep going until someone listens." She also recommends people of all genders make a habit of checking their breasts on the first of the month, every month. But most of all, she wants people to live life while they can. "We used to stress the small stuff before I got sick and worry about what bills were getting paid, but now, we enjoy life. People shouldn't wait until they get sick to start living. Life's too damn short." Thursday, 17 October, 2019

ON THE COVER

OPEN DAY AT AVIVA COMMUNITIES AVIVA Communities Officer, which is holding an Open Day on 26 October, offers over 55s the opportunity to live in a residential community designed for a younger spirited retiree or pending retiree. The range of contemporary home designs available has been architecturally designed with modern facades more reflective of housing trends experienced in the wider community. Another unique aspect of the home range is that each and every home features north facing living zones. “Homes at Aviva Officer all achieve a minimum 6 star energy rating” says Katrina Steel Head Of Marketing at Aviva Communities. “In addition to the level of comfort this offers homeowners, north facing living also maximises light inflow– particularly in winter when sun is at its lowest. It also means less reliance on artificial heating and cooling.“ Providing homeowners with financial certainty is also a fundamental element of the Aviva Living Model. Like most Lifestyle Communities around you buy your home and lease the land on which it sits via a Weekly Site Fee. You also pay a Deferred Management Fee when you move out of the community. “At Aviva we want you to be certain that you can afford to live in our community not only at the time you move in – but long into the future” said Katrina. “To do this we offer buyers the opportunity to fix their Weekly Site Fee for life”. Unlike other options around, Aviva Communities Officer calculates the DMF on the incoming purchase price of the home so any capital gain goes into the

hands of the homeowners. “This is just another way we provide financial certainty” said Katrina. “You will know what your obligations and ongoing costs will be from day one so you can make a really informed purchase choice”. Community input sought St John of God Health Care is giving the community the opportunity to share their thoughts around health care services to be offered at Gibb Street, Berwick. A community forum will be held on Tuesday 22 October and will allow members of the community to voice their opinions, ideas and concerns about healthcare in Melbourne's south east. St John of God Health Care has always prioritised meeting the needs of the community and has upheld this track record since the Sisters of St John of God emigrated to rural Western Australia from Ireland in 1895, responding to a call for help after severe outbreaks of typhoid. Fast forward to 2019 and St John of God Health Care are once again looking to establish the ever-changing health care requirements of its community and respond with new and growing facilities to service those needs. Locally in Berwick, the Gibb Street location was the original home of St John of God Berwick Hospital and was first established as a private hospital, then called Shepton Private Hospital, in 1910. In 2018 the Berwick hospital moved to its new and bigger facility at Kangan Drive, leaving Gibb Street vacant with a huge potential for new services. Residents are invited to come along to the community forum and share what's important to them and their family, from the ways their family's health care needs will change in the years to come and what services and facilities they will need, to considering the distances travelled to access city based services that they would like to see offered closer to home. Community consultation was vital in the development of the new St John of God Berwick Hospital and resulted in the opening of

Fix foot problems Foot pain is extremely common, affecting more than 80 percent of people at some point in their lives, with heel pain being the most common of all human foot complaints. Despite their frequency, these conditions are often mismanaged and incorrectly treated. This leaves many sufferers spending time and money on treatments without long-term solutions or relief. But why are such common problems seemingly so hard to treat effectively? One of Australia's leading foot, knee and leg pain experts, and practitioner to some of the worlds best athletes, Dr Paul Dowie from Foot and Leg Pain Clinics, explains. "Besides the fact that the feet are one of the body's most complex structures and we are on them all the time, there are two major reasons foot pain and particularly heel pain treatment is often ineffective, especially long-term," he said. "Either only the symptoms are being addressed and not the underlying cause, or the exact nature and cause of the condition are not being identified or understood. "For example, most heel pain is incorrectly assumed to be an inflammatory condition when it is nearly always a result of nerve impingement or tissue degeneration. "Tissue thickening is often mistaken for inflammation, contributing to incorrect diagnoses and treatment. "This is a big problem because treating a degenerative condition with anti-inflammatory treatments can actually cause further tissue damage, making your condition worse," he said. If you have any foot, heel or knee pain, you can see Dr. Dowie at Foot and Leg Pain Clinics in Berwick. Phone 1300 328 300 to book a consultation - call now for $50 off initial consultations.

Doveton Medical Centre offers a range of allied health services.

Mackenzie rides to top title Casey Council is calling on the community help name new streets for a new estate in Clyde North.

Help name new streets Be part of Casey history by naming a street, road, way, court, drive, avenue and boulevard in one of the City's new estate developments. Council has teamed up with developers Mirvac and is throwing it out to the people to help come up with possible street names for Smiths Lane, which is now selling in Clyde North. Coming up with streets names can be a challenge for developers and council with so many themes and words already in use and strict rules in place about what can and can't be used. Since opening it up to the community in late September, council has received more than 150 submissions - however more are needed before 27 October. Some of the themes that have come through so far include African animal names, historical women of Casey, Casey Girl Guide leaders, names of flowers in the estate, Cranbourne Cup winners and local market gardener surnames.

Casey mayor, Amanda Stapledon encouraged the community to get on board, get creative, and throw some more ideas into the mix. Here's some tips to help you along the way: • The more obscure the better, as council needs names that haven't been used in Casey before. • Think about connections to Casey, it's natural environment and history. • Why not think of a theme and come up with heaps of suggestions that relate - we need hundreds of names, so don't just limit your suggestion to one. You might like to come up with a group of names under the one theme and name a whole area of the estate. • There are some rules around street names which can be found on council's website - but don't overthink it. Just throw in your ideas and council will do the rest. For submissions visit: Casey Conversations on the City of Casey website.

Mackenzie took two horses with her to compete and the school can now boast that is has the Senior Novice National Champion attending the college! Mackenzie and Missy placed 1st and 2nd achieving overall Champion. Mackenzie also placed 3rd in her Advanced Freestyle and 5th in 5b and 3rd in 5c to come home 4th overall in the Advanced Championship. Celebrating 10 Years

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A delivery van driver for a Hallam food supply company has been jailed after fatally crashing into a cyclist in country Victoria. Timothy Joel Scott, now 34, was on his way home from a delivery run for Gippy Gourmet when his van drove straight into the back of James Freeman's bicycle on Yarrawonga-Benalla Road about 4.20pm on 24 March 2017. Mr Freeman, a husband and father, had been riding 500 millimetres inside of the white line when his cycling companion in front of him heard an "almighty bang", the County Court of Victoria heard. As a result of the crash, Mr Freeman was thrown 35 metres, landing face up on the side of the road. Despite the efforts of his mate and others, Mr Freeman died at the scene. Mr Scott initially told police that he'd lost control of his truck as he veered to overtake the two cyclists in convoy. During his over-correction, he crashed into the rear bike, he said. But after contradictory forensic evidence, he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death. Mr Scott had set off from the Gippy Gourmet factory in Hallam about 6am that day. He then delivered food supplies through northern Victoria and southern NSW and was on his way home to Delacombe, Ballarat. There was no evidence of speeding - Scott was driving at a minimum 84 km/h in a 100 zone, Judge Clare Quin noted during sentencing on 10 October. Nor was there suggestion of drugs, alcohol, use of a mobile phone or any mechanical fault with the van. Judge Quin noted Scott had remained at the crash scene and attempted to help his victim. In mitigation, he'd pleaded guilty early, shown remorse and had good rehabilitation prospects, she said. 32 STAR NEWS

Unique Opportunities. Exceptional Futures.

OPEN DAY Friday 25 October 2019 To celebrate our 10th Anniversary the school is holding a number of events including an Open Day on Friday October 25 where members of the community, parents, past students and staf are warmly invited to come along to guided tours of the school with student leaders, visit and participate in classes, attend a celebratory assembly, or share in a BBQ generously organised by the Rotary Club of Berwick. Please join us – we would love to showcase our school. She dismissed a defence argument that the crash was caused by Scott's "momentary inattention". The driver should have been able to see the cyclists between 100 to 400 metres away on the straight section of road, she said. "The dangerousness was your failing to take due care and attention when it was required. "These accidents are all too frequent due to the inattention of drivers." Judge Quin rejected a defence submission for Scott to be sentenced solely to a community corrections order. "As a result of your inattention, a man has lost his life through no fault of his own." Scott was jailed for four months, followed by a two year CCO with 75 hours community work. He was disqualified from driving for 18 months.

FOCUS ON … EDUCATION CHOICES

Nossal marks 10 years Nossal High School opened in 2010 as the first fully academically selective co-educational government high school. In the subsequent decade it has established itself as one of the top performing schools in the state and is internationally recognised for innovation and academic performance. The school has a capped enrolment of 830 students in years 9-12 and demand for places in the school is very high with over 2600 applicants for the 200 Year 9 places offered each year. Students travel daily from right across the Melbourne metropolitan area and Gippsland with many families moving to the area when their students gain a highly coveted place at the school. The school was named after world renowned scientist Sir Gustav Nossal who maintains a strong connection and interest in the school, and for the past 10 years every new Nossal student and staff member has been greeted by Sir Gus on their first day at the school and presented with their Nossal badge. Foundation principal, Roger Page, was appointed in 2009 to oversee the planning and design of the school, and develop the curriculum and programs to best meet the needs of the high performing, highly aspirational and academically talented student cohort. “It is a rare privilege to be able to create a new school, and I am incredibly proud of what has been achieved in the past 10 years," Mr Page said. "We have a state-of-the-art school with excellent facilities, but more importantly, outstanding teachers and a fantastic group of delightful students with strong and supportive families all working together to achieve very impressive outcomes.

Sir Gustav Nossal is looking forward to celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the school named in his honour. "We have been able to create a learning environment that is challenging, stimulating and supportive and our students are happy and thriving, both at Nossal and beyond. The adult learning environment invests the students with considerable responsibility for their own learning and enables them to work in a safe, trusting environment where they are challenged and extended, and nurtured

Cup’s fashionable field By Brendan Rees Racegoers, beaming in their fancy frocks and finest suits, arrived in droves at the Cranbourne Cup on Sunday 13 October where they were treated to perfect spring weather. There was a sea of colour among the crowds as they showed off their finest attire while enjoying the burst of sunshine. Cranbourne's Craig Williams, piloted home 'Dr Drill' to a stirring victory in the $400,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup in front of a crowd estimated to be more than 6,500 people. There were free kids activities and live entertainment on course to backdrop an incredible day of racing for young and old. Taking out fashions on the field was Kiara Manning of Beaconsfield who won first place for Young Lady of the Day. Ms Manning, who also won in 2017, wore an orange and blue "very bright spring racing dress." "I came back this year and tried my luck again," she said, adding "It was a nice spring day. I think the whole atmosphere was really lovely." "I got a bunch of goodies from all the different sponsors ... it was really lovely," she said. Michael Carty, 47, of Maldon gave the lads a run for their money after taking out Gent of the Day. He wore a Politix grey jacket and vest with black pants and shoes, complete with a black and silver tie. Mr Carty, was grew up in KooWeeRup, said he initially didn't have a hat to match but dropped into a shop at Kyneton on the drive down and bought a Panama hat. His wife also won runner-up for Lady of the Day for fashions on the field. "It was a good family day out ... had a few bets and few drinks; didn't win anything but picked up on the fashions on the field - that was worth the effort," he said. ENTERTAINMENT

Arj says we need to talk By Danielle Kutchel Arj Barker has something he needs to get off his chest. The American stand-up comedian is back in Melbourne now with his show "We Need to Talk", which he'll be performing at Dandenong's Drum Theatre and the Cardinia Cultural Centre in October. But he assures audiences it's nothing too serious. "Some people have said to me, 'are you breaking up with us?'" he laughs. "But it's all comedy, my main priority is to make it a very funny hour." Mr Barker has been a mainstay on the international comedy circuit for years with appearances on Thank God You're Here, Rove, Spicks and Specks, Good News Week, The 7pm Project, Talkin' 'bout Your Generation, Have You Been Paying Attention, The Footy Show and numerous Melbourne International Comedy Festival Galas. With such glamourous appearances under his belt, one might question what he's doing

50-odd kilometres from Melbourne - but this tour isn't his first time out 'in the sticks'. In fact, he often tours outside of the capital cities, and besides, Pakenham isn't really that far away, he argues. "I've been to Mount Gambier!" he laughs. "I'm just happy to perform in front of a good audience. I try to have fun wherever I go. The audiences have always been terrific." While he's been tickling the funny bones of audiences for years, he says he still loves what he does. "It's still a fun job, and every night is different - you never know exactly what to expect. It's perpetually an interesting experience." This is the last chance for south-eastern audiences to see We Need to Talk, before Mr Barker premieres a new show in 2020. Catch Arj Barker in We Need to Talk at The Drum Theatre on Friday 18 October, and at the Cardinia Cultural Centre on Saturday 19 October. Visit www.drumtheatre.com.au or www.cardinia.vic.gov.au/ccc/ for more information and to book.

Get out and get thrifty at this year’s Garage Sale Trail City of Casey is taking part in something pretty iconic this year, and want resident to be involved. It's time to reuse, rethink and recycle when the Garage Sale Trail (GST) comes to town on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October. Repurpose those second-hand goods that are cluttering up the closet and be part of this nation-wide event by registering your sale. Households, schools, community groups and local businesses are invited to host a sale or shop the trail, joining more than 400,000 Australians in this huge movement that makes one man's trash another man's treasure!

For shoppers, the GST is a great opportunity to pick up a bargain and find something unique, while also doing your bit for the environment. For sellers, it's a great chance to get rid of those bits and bobs that you might not love as much as you used to! Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon said she was thrilled Casey was taking part in this year's movement and can't wait to see the bargains on sale. "The GST is a wonderful opportunity for us to put our environment first and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill by reusing what's already there," she said.

"This is one of Australia's biggest community and sustainability events; one gigantic weekend of waste-reducing, planet-saving and treasure hunting. "It's also an opportunity to make a little bit of extra money, and it's all for a good cause." Registration for this event is free. If residents register their sale in the City of Casey, once all locations are confirmed, council will promote this as part of the overall event and encourage the community to come and shop with you. Find out more at the Garage Sale Trail website.

Berwick family Sarah, Matthew, Lucas and Emilia Rodrigues with Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon, prepare for their big sale in two weeks.

School scores a big goal Students at Narre Warren South P-12 College and the broader community can now enjoy a brand new soccer pitch, complete with training facilities, floodlighting, and pavilion. Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas represented the Minister for Education to officially open the site, alongside the Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon, much to the delight of the students who can now use this world-class facility. As part of the Shared Facilities Fund, Narre Warren South P-12 College received $1.5 million in State Government funding to deliver the new synthetic soccer pitch and pavilion. The new facilities function as a dual-purpose space, with the school utilising it during the day and the Council's local community and sporting groups able to access the area after hours for physical education programs and training. The project includes classrooms, four change rooms and toilet facilities, as well as a kiosk, first aid and cleaner rooms, and a storage space.

Mr Maas said the upgrade would allow the Narre Warren South community to access the brand new shared sporting facilities, and "help foster a sense of community spirit that extends outside the boundaries of a soccer pitch." "It is so important that our students and our communities have access to high quality infrastructure that lets them not just have fun, but develop and grow through physical education and team sports," he said. "Who knows, the next soccer superstar may come from Narre Warren South with the help of these new facilities." Cr Stapledon said council was proud to partner with the State Government and the Narre Warren South Prep-12 College to deliver the "wonderful community facility". "Facilities such as this are crucial to supporting the sport and recreation needs of our growing municipality and the Joint Use Agreement with the College will ensure optimum use of the facility throughout the day, as well as out of school hours and on weekends," she said.

The Cranny boy salutes By sports editor Russell Bennett

‘Dr Drill’ had pace to burn down the straight as he powered to victory in the $400,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup on Sunday. 198932 Pictures: ROB CAREW

Jamie Kah piloted 'Tavisan' to a thrilling win in the Apache Cat Classic.

Cranbourne favourite son Craig Williams and Ciaron Maher pose with the Cup.

Williams was all smiles after his victorious ride.

Kah stopped short of saying Tavisan was troubled in the race's closing stages. "He sort of does all he has to," she explained. "When that horse came up on the inside he fought again - it was a really tough win."

'Oceanex' struggled to find a run before a massive late surge.

Earlier on TAB Cranbourne Cup weekend, 'No Effort' claimed Friday night's $100,000 Pinker Pinker plate on another perfect day for racing. Leading around the final turn, No Effort was threatened - and even briefly overtaken by 'Rube Bridges' - while raging hot favourite

No Effort had to put in one final one to stay ahead - ultimately saluting by less than half a length from Oceanex and Rube Bridges in third. 12419503-SN23-19

"He's not that big, but he's got a mighty big heart." That was the fitting race call that echoed down the straight late on Sunday afternoon as the boy from Cranbourne, Craig Williams, piloted home 'Dr Drill' to a stirring victory in the $400,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup in front of a bumper crowd. The pre-race favourite hardly had it all his own way - checked at the first turn - but he settled into his rhythm and Williams expertly powered him home down the straight. Exploding out of the final turn, Dr Drill showed a brilliant turn of speed to power past Brett Prebble aboard the Trent Busuttintrained 'Savvy Oak', which led for much of the journey before fading to finish last. Speaking at the trophy presentation Ciaron Maher - one half of the training duo behind Dr Drill, along with David Eustace - described his horse as "a real revelation". "His form in Europe was over a mile-anda-half and since he's been out here he seems a lot sharper so we've still got that up our sleeve - he can stretch out and I think he's going to be a lovely horse," he said. "He seems very genuine." Maher even hinted that punters could even see Dr Drill again in the Sportsbet Ballarat Cup over 2000 metres on 23 November. Williams, meanwhile, spoke of his pride in representing his hometown in its showpiece event. "Of course, this is where I grew up - (I went to) Cranbourne Primary School, and then I went to Cranbourne High, which is now Cranbourne Secondary College," he said. "It's great - it's fantastic that Country Racing Victoria stands as a big part of the racing demographics here in Victoria, and it's great to see the support of TAB and the investment of the money, and it's fantastic to see the good weather and the great crowd come out here today. "For me - I was fortunate. Dr Drill raced so well today and he was very gallant. He's been very well managed by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace and the team, and they've just placed him so well, been very patient, and got the rewards with him. "I'm looking forward to a bright future for him." With the win, the five-year-old bay gelding backed up his victory from last month's Monstar Foundation Handicap over 1900 metres at Rosehill. He's now won six of his 19 starts. In the other feature race on TAB Cranbourne Cup day, the $100,000 Apache Cat Classic, 'Tavisan' saluted for trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr as jockey Jamie Kah claimed her third victory of the day. Tavisan got the jump and had prime position around the turn in the 1000-metre sprint. He led by two lengths coming down the straight but looked to be swamped with 100 metres still to run as Patrick Moloney, aboard 'Fine Dane', made an incredible last-ditch effort. But the brave Tavisan had enough up his sleeve to hold on. In claiming her treble for the day, Kah told racing.com how proud she was to win the Apache Cat - having never sat on Tavisan before. "A big thank you to Mick (Price) and Mick Kent Jr for putting me on this boy," she said. "He jumped to the front and did it all himself. "He got away with it quite easily in front and he's just a really lovely animal to ride, and god he's got some gate speed which helps him out there."

All happening at Casey Round 2 of the Casey Softball Association dawned with great playing conditions. The junior competition started for the under-13s and under-15s, with a number of children taking to the diamond for their first game. In the under13s, the Cobras beat Berwick 10-5 and the Royal Falcons and Doveton drew 8-8 in a thriller. It was a great result for the Royal Falcons - a brand new team filled with first gamers. The under-15s saw Cobras Grey defeat Berwick 15-0, and Doveton defeat Cobras Maroon 15-5. The social women's competition had three games with Narre Warren defeating the Cobras 17-7 - their first win in over a season after re-grading themselves from Open 2; Berwick Geronimo was too strong for the Cranbourne Comets winning 23-4; and in a close game MVP defeated Berwick Chickasaw 9-4. In Open Women 2 Berwick Cheyenne defeated Casey 12-6, and Young Guns defeated Doveton 14-10 in a tight one. Open 1 Women produced a very good, close game between two strong teams - Chiefs United and Doveton, with Doveton the eventual winner 5-4. The men had two games with Chiefs United too strong for Cranbourne Asteroids 17-4, and Berwick Arapaho defeating Cobras 10-0. Last weekend the Casey Softball Association sent three teams to the junior development softball tournament in Mt Barker, South Australia. After a four-month training program, more than 30 children headed to the rolling hills of outer Adelaide to represent the Casey Softball Association at the annual Labour Day junior tournament. The Casey development program aimed to introduce new players to the sport, together with further developing the skills of experienced players in a tournament atmosphere. In weather that ranged from mid-30s heat to persistent drizzle, Casey's young softballers showed great resilience as they fought hard throughout nine games over the

Casey’s junior softballers are showing huge potential. three-day weekend. As the Casey under-12 girls were the only entrant in their age group, they were required to compete in the under-14 girls competition. Despite their small stature, these young warriors weren't daunted by the challenge. Coaches Jenny Joynson and Heath Lewis ensured that the girls took to the diamond with smiles and displayed terrific character, revelling in the small victories. The team improved consistently over the weekend, and the girls wore their bruises as badges of honour.

The under-14 mixed team fought hard all weekend against strong opposition. Some members of the team had never played a game of softball prior to the tournament, but were supported by their more experienced teammates, who further developed their skills in unfamiliar fielding positions or in tactical plays. Coaches Margie Steendam, Kerry Laird and Chaminda Fernando lead a boisterous but encouraging team who played their games with plenty of spirit. Casey's under-16 girls team featured a mix of younger players and experienced veterans.

All members of the team gained valuable experience to set them in good stead for the upcoming season. The WNBL’s newest outfit, the Southside Flyers, etched its way into the history books with a brilliant opening round win against Townsville Fire at Dandenong Stadium on Saturday night. In front of a big crowd, the Flyers - formally known as the Dandenong Rangers since 1992, but rebranded this year in order to create a team with the support of different regions of the south east - took the points in a promising performance under new coach Cheryl Chambers, winning 81-72. While there were moments where the Flyers appeared scratchy after battling to get the full squad together on the eve of the season, the newest franchise largely played some excellent basketball, thrilling the crowd with some fast and daring play. Chambers told the WNBL website that the night was one that will be etched into the memory for a long time. “There was a lot of excitement, a lot of nerves, a lot of fun, everyone enjoyed it,” she explained. “We weren’t perfect and there’s a lot of work to do but everyone had a great experience, we were sort of relieved to get the win and now we

can move forward and fix a few things. “The crowd and atmosphere were fantastic. At one stage, the girls said to me ‘we can’t hear what you’re saying’ and that’s a great problem to have. “The smiles on the kids’ faces and seeing them all on court getting photos and autographs after the game was fantastic, (it was) an awesome atmosphere.” There was plenty of winners across the court for the Flyers, with Opals and WNBA star point guard Leilani Mitchell absolutely brilliant with 21 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals; skipper Jenna O’Hea leading from the front with 19 points and eight rebounds; and the dynamic Sara Blicavs also producing some great moments with 13 points. Despite the pair missing large chunks of the pre-season due to injury, Chambers was full of praise for Mitchell and O’Hea for their leadership and ability to stand up in the key moments. The Flyers have an action-packed schedule this week, taking on Perth Lynx tonight (Thursday) at home, before heading to Sydney to take on the Flames on Saturday night, with the side looking to open the season with a 3-0 record. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
