Mario Fallace and his team celebrate their win in the Retail category.
A CUT ABOVE THE COMPETITION New York Barbers is a slice of the Big Apple in the heart of Berwick. The business was established in 2014 by owner Mario Fallace to provide a quality men’s grooming service in the South East suburbs and Casey region. The state-of-the-art barber shop was inspired by the traditional, old school New York barber shops and the famous city itself. Under Mario’s watchful eye, the team of barbers service all gentleman providing haircuts, beard trims and shaves. Mario’s love for the Big Apple is evident in the carefully curated space which includes arresting photographs of iconic New York landscapes. One corner of the barbers is devoted
to the history of the craft with framed antique cut throat razors and a centuryold barber’s chair. Mario describes New York Barbers as an “old school barber shop with a modern fusion". “When I decided originally to open a barbers it would have been very easy to paint a white wall and put in chairs and mirrors and call it a barbers shop,“ explained Mario. “But I got to thinking about barbering and how big it was in the 1920s through to the 1960s in New York. At that time there was a barber on every corner. That’s why I wanted to have a New York inspired feel and hence why we became the New York Barbers." Customers and those waiting with
them can also indulge in a coffee, frappe, milkshake, cup of tea, soft drink or hot chocolate from the cafe. Mario says his team of barbers are like family. “The team is awesome. They are well experienced in all aspects of barbering from close shaves, to modern fades. It’s about looking after men. “I am really proud of my team because that is exactly what they do. You can sit any chair in New York Barbers and know you will get the same quality service." The judge described New York Barbers as “an amazing business“. “The quality of your marketing, customer experience and innovation is
simply awesome. Congratulations on the strategy always putting the customer first, involvement in the local community with relevant win win sponsorships and the diversity of your two outlets is well thought through,“ the judge wrote. “Your future plans are innovative and will be an asset to the region. Wow, I was blown away with your customer first approach and the focus you have on a consistent experience for your customers. “New York Barbers is a great role model for how to engage and develop staff. To quote Mario - 'As the leader of this business I am responsible for the success of my staff'. I would encourage all Casey Cardinia Business Award entrants to pay New York Barbers a visit and see how this business is presented."

But Cr Flannery said: "The money we've spent overseas could've been invested into employing people or helping businesses to employ more people". Mr Sullivan also voiced his concerns of council overseas trips saying there was "no evidence" they were of "any benefit to the ratepayers." "That's all bloody spin - they're past masters at it," he said. Residents and Ratepayers Association president Arvo Talvik said the $137,243 bill "doesn't seem a lot with respect to the overall Casey Council budget" but did question

Carers Victoria CEO Scott Walker said Cr Stapledon was entitled to ensure her son is cared for when she is participating in council business - "in order to fulfil the duties as a councillor and roles and responsibilities of mayor." "Carers Victoria is aware local governments are required to act in accordance with the Local Government Act 1989 in relation to prescribed reimbursements for councillors with care responsibilities," he said. The mayor also received an annual allowance of $107,819 pro-rata while councillors got allowances of $33,535. 12430350-FA44-19
Casey councillors claimed $137,243 in ratepayer funded expenses in the past financial year - a 58 per cent increase in just three years. Casey's 11 councillors claimed expenses for overseas trips, car travel, mobile phone, laptop and internet use, as well as education and training costs in the year to July, the 2018-19 Casey annual report has revealed - with the total up $50,396 from 2015-16. The costs has been slammed by Ratepayers Victoria as "irresponsible spending." "There's little or no accountable how our money is being spent. We've had enough of it," Ratepayers Victoria vice-president Frank Sullivan said. Mayor Amanda Stapledon had the most ex-
penses of any councillor - $50,154, including $14,096 for travel costs and $17,895 in carer expenses for her son Pete who has a disability. Next was Cr Sam Aziz with $29,315 in total expenses, including $17,848 for travel. Claiming the least was Cr Milla Gillic who spent $590. In a statement, Cr Stapledon said expenses reported in the annual report were compliant with councils adopted Councillors Reimbursement of Expenses Policy. Councillor Rex Flannery said he would be challenging $2,284 in total expenses contending he doesn't "waste a penny except for my phone bill". He also wanted to see "proof in the pudding" with council overseas trips, after ratepayers paid $70,000 for councillors and council officers to visit China on two separate trips this

IN BRIEF
Childcare centre gets the greenlight By Brendan Rees A childcare centre for 54 children will be built in Hampton Park, despite Casey Council rejecting the plans, the state's highest planning tribunal has ruled. The council rejected Winnima Realty Pty Ltd 's proposal for 9 Winnima Avenue on the grounds of location suitability, the impact on the character of the locality, and amenity impacts on neighbours. Two nearby residents also opposed the grant of a permit. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) overturned the council's decision on 7 October, allowing the project to go ahead. VCAT member Michael Deidun said in his report the development was appropriate with the building design, setbacks, facade treatment, building materials and colour scheme being "consistent with the surrounding residential environment." "I find that the proposal will not result in any unreasonable built form impacts on the surrounding properties, including by way of
visual bulk, overlooking or overshadowing," the report said. He further stated the design of the building and acoustic fences will ensure that noises from the childcare centre "will be appropriately contained on-site, and limit the amenity impact on the adjoining residents." Mr Deidun stated a number of residents raised concerns about Winnema Avenue being used as a "shortcut" through the residential neighbourhood. But Mr Deidun believed the proposed childcare centre would not result in "unreasonable traffic impact on the surrounding road environment" despite an additional 216 vehicle movements being added to the local road network. "As Winnima Avenue provides access to an arterial road to its north, and a collector road to its south, the traffic movements from this child care centre will be split between these two destinations. As such, no single point along Winnima Avenue will experience the additional 216 vehicle movements that will be
generated from this proposed development," he stated. Mr Deidun dismissed suggestions it would be expected non-residential land uses located within a residential zone would "appear just the same as the nearby residential properties." "Non-residential land uses have a particular form and function, often require additional car parking, and have other attributes or requirements that must be provided in a proposed design," he stated. Casey acting manager of statutory planning and building Services Nick Moore said council declined the application for the childcare centre as it failed to comply with the local policy of the Casey Planning Scheme. "Some of the main concerns raised by council included the site's location not being amongst other non-residential uses, its potential to detract from the neighbourhood character, and the potential to cause adverse amenity impacts to the surrounding residents," he said. The proposed hours of operation will be restricted from 6.30am to 7pm on weekdays.
Sikh celebration honours community By Brendan Rees The 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism was celebrated at Bunjil Place for the first time. Organised by Sikh Volunteers Australia, the ceremony attracted hundreds of people who gathered for a seminar themed 'Share and Care' where various community groups were awarded in recognition of their service in cooperation, multiculturalism and support for people in need. The event was attended by MPs, Casey councillors, council staff and representatives of south east organisations. Guest speakers included Tim Costello, the Australian Baptist Minister and current chief advocate of World Vision Australia; Philip Rosie of Victoria Council of Churches, and Jasbir Singh Suropada of the Sikh Interfaith Council of Victoria. A big-hearted group of Sikh Volunteers also provided free vegetarian food on the day. In her speech, Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon said council was "incredibly proud" so many people call City of Casey their home. "We love our Sikh Community and are so grateful for our Sikh Volunteers. We know how important this special event is and that is why raised the 550th anniversary in council to light up Bunjil Place on the 12th of November; an event that we invite the whole community to," she said. "Council is proud and will continue to work alongside the many diverse community groups and members to create an environ-
Jail time for baby killer A man found guilty of shaking his then-partner's baby in Cranbourne West, causing the child's death, has been sentenced to eight and a half years in prison. Jesse Vinaccia, who was 22 at the time of the offence, was sentenced in the Supreme Court on Monday 14 October, more than three years after the child's death. In his sentencing remarks, Justice Michael Croucher noted Vinaccia's extensive admissions to police and the remorse he had expressed, including a suicide attempt following the baby's death, despite entering a not-guilty plea. Justice Croucher also noted Vinaccia's "good prospects of rehabilitation". The court found that on the evening of 23 January 2016, Kaleb Baylis-Clarke was found unresponsive in his cot by Vinaccia, who had been caring for him while his mother, Erin Baylis-Clarke was at work. Vinaccia was in a relationship with Ms Baylis-Clarke at the time and lived with them in Cranbourne West. The infant was rushed to the Monash Medical Centre and placed on life support. While he had no external injuries, he did have serious brain injuries and bleeding in both retinas which examiners concluded had been caused by violent shaking. Vinaccia later admitted to police that he had "grabbed [Kaleb] off ... his [mat] with a bit of force"; that he may have "shaken [Kaleb] with ... quite significant force"; that he put him down in his cot "pretty rough"; and that he was "frustrated" at the time after a conversation with Kaleb's father. Kaleb died on 30 January 2016 after his life support was switched off. Vinaccia was found guilty of child homicide in June this year. Vinaccia must serve at five and a half years before being eligible for parole.

THREE … ways to NOT lose your license this spring
free showers for people living on the streets in the south east
What made you decide to start your charity Clean as Casper in offering free showers to the community? Around five years ago, I set up a charity called Orange sky laundry in the south east (a mobile laundry service for the homeless). I met a homeless gentlemen named Casper who revealed to me one night that he had not showered for 6-7 years. He had purchased internet security for me after over hearing me saying I needed it. As I was not allowed to accept any gifts, I bartered with him and in exchange, I promised to build him a mobile shower- and so the journey began. What days/times does the mobile truck operate? Mondays 4pm-7.30pm Wednesdays 7pm -8.30am Thursday: 12pm -2.30pm Thursdays 6pm -8.30pm Friday 6.30pm -8.30pm Saturdays 7 m -9pm What business do you run on the side? I run my family flooring store - Choices Flooring with my brother and parents.
1
Ditch the keys Leave your car keys at home and take a taxi or Uber to where you are going. That way you won't be tempted to hop in the car to drive home after you've had one too many.
2
Designated driver If you do need to drive somewhere, let your friends know you'll be the designated driver and stick to the non-alcoholic drinks. You'll earn some great brownie points for the next time you go out as a group when someone else can drive.
3
Monitor your consumption If you want to have a few drinks and drive home, stick to one standard drink per hour and have plenty of other non-alcoholic fluids in between. One standard drink is approx. 100ml of wine and 285ml of full-strength beer. Guidelines recommend no more than four standards drinks on a single occasion. But even if you follow all the guidelines, your BAC (blood alcohol content) can vary depending on how much you've eaten, your body weight, etc.

Lucky number $666,666 By Mitchell Clarke A Berwick man has woken up to a real life dream, pocketing $666,666 after scoring division one in Tattslotto. The thrilled winner held one of six division one wins nationally in Monday and Wednesday’s Lotto draw 3914 which was drawn on Monday 21 October. Wishing to remain anonymous, the man admitted he was initially sceptical when he woke to the remarkable news.
“I woke up to a few missed calls and an email telling me to check my ticket,” he said. “I had no idea what was going on as I thought it must be spam or some other bulls***. “I checked my account and saw that I had won and all I could think was ‘what the hell!’”. The man explained he played the same numbers every week, admitting he’s been playing QuickPick for years. “It’s only a small four-game entry, so I’ve got it on a subscription for every week, so I know
I’ll always have my numbers in. “I never expected I’d win division one!” The money comes at a particularly crucial time, with the winner claiming he really needed it after a few rough weeks. “This windfall takes the pressure off us for sure,” he said. “It’s been a tough few weeks I’ve got to say so this has come at a really good time.” While a holiday is already planned, he’s keen to upgrade and enjoy himself that little bit more.
“We already have a little getaway planned in the next couple of weeks, so I think we’ll be celebrating then,” he said. “We’ll be able to go away on our break and splurge a bit. Maybe upgrade the room or have a few more nice dinners.” The winning 4-game QuickPick entry was purchased online. In the 12 months to 30 June 2019, there were 88 division one winning Monday & Wednesday Lotto entries across the Lott’s jurisdictions, which collectively won $87 million.
Mass arrests: cops swoop Hot showers hit the road By Brendan Rees

An 18-year-old Cranbourne West man was arrested in relation to a robbery in Carnegie and related deceptions offences. The man was arrested on Monday 21 October in relation to a robbery that occurred on Rosstown Road in Carnegie on 8 October. Police have charged the man with deception offences and was bailed to appear at Moorabbin Magistrate’s Court on 20 November. Investigations into the robbery are ongoing. A 16-year-old Pakenham boy was also arrested in relation to a robbery on Rosstown Road, Carnegie on 8 October and related deceptions offences. He will appear at a Children’s Court later this week. Police have arrested 57 people over the past three days as part of Operation Liege to crack down on youth offending across the state. Fifty-seven people were arrested and multiple charges have been laid for offences including carjacking, aggravated burglary, robbery and vehicle crime linked to serious offending. Warrants were executed in suburbs includ-
ing Cranbourne, Clyde North, Dandenong, Narre Warren, Frankston, Pakenham, Reservoir, Sunshine, Truganina, Lara and Norlane. The majority of those arrested are aged between 15 and 21-years-old. North West Metro Region Commander Tim Hansen said Operation Liege was a state-wide investigative and enforcement capability established in July to disrupt high-harm, highimpact youth offending.
A mobile shower charity truck providing free showers to the disadvantaged and people experiencing homelessness in the south east has had an upgrade. After working out of a trailer, Clean as Casper founder Steve Winterton said getting their truck on the road was a “huge relief” after winning a $20,149 in the State Government’s Pick My Project initiative. “It’s quadrupled the amount of people using our shower already,” he said. He said the truck was purchased two years ago but they didn’t have the funds to fit it out. “It’s really saved us ... the name will get out there and people can help us more.” The truck now has one shower, a washing machine, a dryer and cabinetry.Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas said project such as the mobile shower for the homeless displayed “the power of community engagement as we seek to help those in our area who need it most,” adding it would “offer more privacy, more locations, and greater support.” Mr Winterton said it wasn’t just about peo-

RAY’S SAY
In case you didn't notice, last week was AntiPoverty Week and Casey council did absolutely nothing about it - even though no community, especially in the south- eastern suburbs, is free from poverty. According to the Victorian Council Of Social Research ( VCOSS ) there is not one community that has not been impacted by poverty today. Moreover, under the spatial-modelling used by VCOSS the common face of poverty is now found in the south-eastern suburbs with many families struggling to get by. Often people living in poverty are under-24 years of age with more than one in every six children in Victoria living in poverty. Further, more than a quarter of adults living in poverty have a job. Low incomes and public policy are driving people into poverty in the south-eastern suburbs. In my view, councils really need to take a stand against the lack of affordable housing, advocate for more training and education opportunities, and categorically reject Federal government austerity policies. Most of all, local government can help make a difference because it has the capacity to actually reduce some of the cost of living pressures impacting on many local residents. Recently Casey council has refused an opportunity to support a national campaign to increase Youth Allowance and New Start assistance for all unemployed people. Under Casey's mayor, Amanda Stapledon and her conservative council, the south-eastern suburbs will become an Urban Ghetto. John Glazebrook Endeavour Hills

She has started a change.org petition calling for authorities to install CCTV cameras. Here is how our readers responded: Bro Dun: I'm always near the area and sometimes there are police there in the afternoon or I'm sometimes there in the afternoon when I get the bus Julie Gifford: It's been a trouble spot for years especially when school starts and finishes. There needs to be police presence during these times. Big plans for Narre By Brendan Rees Narre Warren Village could be in line for a facelift after Casey Council unveiled its visionary plan for major development in the area. Councillors voted a their 15 October meeting to adopt the draft Narre Warren Village Urban Design Framework which proposes to revitalise the village - a designated precinct within the Fountain Gate Narre Warren Metropolitan Activity Centre located adjacent to Narre Warren rail station. Key plans include: an improved Webb Street precinct street enhancement an urban plaza traffic redirected from Webb Street change of bus movement a shared path bridge leading straight to the village for pedestrian and cyclists enhanced train station environment green infrastructure including water sensitive urban design features for storm water management Casey manager of city design and construction Trevor Griffin said the framework would encourage employment close to home, more sustainable transport modes to reduce congestion and car dependence, a vibrant core of activity and lifestyle options around the train station, and improved safety and attractiveness of the centre as a destination. The framework would "likely be ongoing for many years" or "accelerated" if council is successful in securing funding or if market conditions support early investment, he said. "In the next three to five years, council will aim to develop project proposals to submit to the State Government to improve local traffic snarls, upgrade the bus interchange and improve pedestrian safety around the train station," Mr Griffin said. "Council believes that the train station car park could be safer and better managed

in Narre Warren did not fall under the Urban Design Framework but was an "immediate initiative to support business owners to uplift the look and feel of the village, while council worked towards more substantial, longer-term improvements," Mr Griffin said. Concerns raised by the public regarding the framework included traffic congestion, lack of car parking near the train station, safety concerns including lacking of lighting as well as drug and rubbish, poor streetscape and shopping environment. The framework plan was available for viewing and feedback from 13 August to 10 September, 12396920-LB35-18
through more thriving activity around the station, such as cafes, offices and improved retail tenancies. "We are aware that increasing parking numbers could further exacerbate the grid lock, which is experienced in the area during peak times, so this must be carefully planned to avoid long-term, detrimental impacts on the village," he said. "Ideally, commuters would be able to access a reliable and efficient bus service to the station to reduce the dependence on cars and parking at the station." A car became airborne and plummeted into a front bedroom of a home in Narre Warren on Wednesday 16 October. The incident, which occurred at the corner of Sinners Ave and Kurrajong Rd at 3.30pm, left the house extensively damaged. Narre Warren State Emergency Service, police, ambulance, and firefighters from Hallam CFA attended the scene. An SES spokeswoman said it's believed the elderly woman driver lost control of her Volkswagen Golf after a bag became stuck under her brake pedal. SES volunteers installed acrow props to hold up the house's structure in place as well tarping the damaged room. Amubulance Victoria spokesman Jamie First said paramedics treated a woman in her 70s although she was not taken to hospital. In a separate incident three days earlier, a young couple woke in shock when a car ploughed into their Berwick home.

‘Debt’ attack By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 21-year-old hired painter has pleaded guilty to brutally bashing his employer into unconsciousness during a dispute over unpaid wages, a court has heard. Rahmatulla Yazdani, without invitation, knocked on the front door of his boss's family home in Lynbrook on a Saturday afternoon in August. The pair argued outside the house over the alleged $1100 non-payment, with the boss pushing Yazdani in the chest and challenging him to fight, Dandenong Magistrates' Court was told on 22 October. Yazdani struck the boss to the forehead with an unknown object, then repeatedly punched the victim to the head, police alleged. He continued hitting even as the boss lay on the ground unconscious, police told the court. When finished, Yazdani flicked his cigarette to the ground, and was driven away in a waiting car. An ambulance was called by a witness. The victim was transported to Dandenong Hospital slipping in and out of consciousness. He suffered a deep laceration and fracture to his brow, a laceration to the bridge of his nose that required stitches as well as seven broken teeth. The dental repair bill was at least $6800, the court heard. Yazdani, sporting a significantly swollen and bruised right hand, was interviewed by police via an interpreter the next day. He broke down and cried when shown the extent of the victim's injuries, the court heard. "If he hadn't touched me I wouldn't have fought him," he told police. Defence lawyer Siva Kandasamy told the court that Yazdani was provoked, unarmed and struck the victim only once. Yazdani had been working for the boss for
four months and was constantly met with "excuses" over not being paid. He had earlier approached police for help but was told it was a civil dispute - and he was unlikely to succeed due to being a sub-contractor, Mr Kandasamy said. The Iranian-born refugee had a severe intellectual disability that impaired his reasoning and coping skills. "He doesn't know how to manage stress and that's a contributing factor," Mr Kandasamy said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said Yazdani must have struck the victim "many, many times", given the extent of the injuries. He noted Yazdani was on corrections orders at the time for two counts of recklessly causing serious injury in 2016. In those previous cases, the two victims had each suffered broken faces. He had failed to do the required unpaid work on the orders but had otherwise engaged well with behavioural programs, the court heard. "The community corrections order hasn't achieved the outcome you would hope because you're here today with a victim that's suffered a high-end injury," Mr Vandersteen said. "If not for the intellectual disability, he'd be looking at years of jail. "He's incredibly violent when he offends." Yazdani accepted Mr Vandersteen's sentence indication of jail followed by a CCO. He was issued a three-year intervention order, banning him from contacting the employer, except through a lawyer. Yazdani was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court for sentencing on 5 December.

Autobarn marks 21 years Autobarn Narre Warren is celebrating 21 years in business with a bright yellow makeover and a huge birthday sale. The popular automotive store is owned and operated by Gavin Sheedy. Gavin learnt the automotive trade from his father, Graeme, who was one of the founding partners of Autobarn in 1985. Gavin has spent 30 years with the company. He met his wife, Nicole, while setting up a country store. After they married in 1999 and Gavin transferred from his head office role to the newly established Narre Warren store. The business is still a family affair with Gavin and Nicole’s daughter Ashley and son Joshua working with them over the years. Gavin said in the last two decades the automotive industry had changed enormously. “Obviously the cars people drive are very different. People expect more from their car, especially in regards to technology. Both our-
selves and the whole automotive industry have needed to change over the years to meet these levels of expectation,“ Gavin explained. He thanked the store’s many loyal customers. “So many of our customers have been shopping with us for as long as I can remember. It’s amazing to think they’ve continued to support us over the journey and for that, I’m extremely grateful.“ To mark the occasion, Gavin and his team are hosting a two day Birthday Sale on the 26 and 27 of October with massive in store discounts and specials. Gavin and his team are looking forward to celebrating with customers. “So many people thank us for the outstanding service they’ve received. Customer service will always remain our number one priority and that’s the main reason we’re still here all these years later."

Art at their fingertips By Danielle Kutchel A new gallery exhibition at Bunjil Place is promising to be the most accessible yet, thanks to an Auslan video label pilot. Auslan (Australian Sign Language) video labels have been loaded onto two iPads, which are available by request at the Bunjil Place Gallery front desk to accompany members of the Auslan community as they visit the David Griggs: Between Nature and Sin exhibition. The pilot is aimed at deaf or hard of hearing people who use Auslan, parents and children of deaf people, Auslan students and interpreters. Arts access/inclusion officer at Bunjil Place, Jessica Moody, said while Auslan tours are not new within the gallery sector, they often involve a tour guide who is well versed in the exhibition and who can take a tour group around it. The downfalls of this approach include the tours being bound to one day or time, and an inability to stop at every piece in the exhibition. Ms Moody was keen to encourage the agency of individual visitors, and with Auslan video
labels, visitors can visit at any time during opening hours and navigate the gallery. There are twelve videos loaded onto each iPad which correspond with the labels inside the gallery. Users can select the thumbnail corresponding to the title of the artwork they are looking at to view the Auslan video. Each video features a deaf artist who has translated the English artwork labels into Auslan. The videos are captioned in English and can be watched in any order. "At Bunjil Place, we welcome all. The Auslan labels remove the barrier of written or spoken language, transforming it into the accessible language of Auslan," Ms Moody said. Sarah Davies, who was born profoundly deaf, said she found the iPad and Auslan labels in the gallery easy to use. "Accessibility is important to me as this gives me more choice and control in attending exhibitions, theatre, movies and general events of my interest to enjoy equally as much as everyone else," she said. "As I love and enjoy art exhibitions, I was
Jessica Moody and Sarah Davies trial the Auslan video labels. 198596 very excited when this exhibition launched with accessibility to Auslan which is my primary language and I am able to fully absorb the same information shared. I think the iPad initiative is fantastic and I would love to see more
of this roll out to many more exhibitions." The labels are currently being piloted only for the David Grigg's exhibition and Ms Moody said they aimed to repeat the initiative in future exhibitions.
Siblings set for whirlwind experience By Brendan Rees What mighty siblings Viv and Joey lack in height, they more than make up for with their charisma and determination. Measuring four foot five inches, and five foot two inches respectively, the pair are looking forward to racing around the globe when they compete for a cash prize of $250,000 in Channel Ten's The Amazing Race Australia. In a race where every second and every step counts, Viv, 25, of Cranbourne East and her brother Joey, 28, of Noble Park, say they will be "super reliant" on Google Maps for directions.
And they are ready to deal with painfully slow taxi rides, furious camels, and kayaking despite Viv admitting she's not "particularly strong (psychically)." Often being made fun of growing up, they now embrace their size and see it as an advantage in the race. Together, they have travelled to the USA, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Macau. "Joey and I grew up watching the show together, and family and friends said that we'd be the funniest pair to watch," Viv says. Their parents migrated to Australia from Vietnam in the 1980s. Viv says having the op-
portunity to travel around the world was a chance to "live out our childhood dream of being on the race." But Joey says: Viv can sometimes be very stubborn and when disagreements arise, this makes it very hard to communicate with her. In situations like this, it's usually her way or the highway." When asked what his go-tip for getting through a long-haul flight, Joey responds: "Make friends with the flight attendants so that they give you extra food and snacks!" The show premieres on Monday 28 October.
Brother-sister Viv and Joey are ready to tackle The Amazing Race Australia.

Tribute to Old Colonists OLD COLONISTS A celebration packed with good old fashioned fun was held at Braeside Park in Berwick recently to gain insight into the history of the Old Colonists Association through the “Beyond the Gate” exhibition. The day celebrated the 150th anniversary and paid tribute to founder George Coppin, whose vision to house and support older Victorians in need continues today. The day saw resident Mona Burke-Kennedy bury a time capsule using a silver trowel dated 1896. More information can be found on: https:// ocav.com.au/ FREE SUNSHADE President of Neighbourhood Watch Casey, Rob Ward, works in partnership with Vic Police and Casey Council to help keep Casey safer. This week Rob delivered a sunshade for every council vehicle to help promote an important message. The message that is displayed on the sunshade is to remember to ensure all valuables are removed, all doors are locked and all windows are closed. This is to minimise break-ins to motor vehicles. The Service was held in Buchanan Park with a precisioned parade, laying of wreaths and a seven-gun salute. We owe our lives to these brave and courageous individuals who fought so hard for our freedoms and this service is one way of acknowledging this. COMMUNITY GROUP OF THE WEEK SIKH VOLUNTEERS A special celebration was held last Sunday, honouring the 550th Anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji and the birth of Sikhism. A presentation outlining the values of the faith, Share and Care and their community service was shown to all 400 people in attendance. The event was held at Bunjil Place with special guest speakers Tim Costello (CEO World Vision) and Philip Rosie (Victorian Council of Churches). The outstanding service of the Sikh Volunteers was evident by the work that is seen in the Casey Community and in their presentation. To celebrate their special day, they invited and honoured dignitaries and community groups who they work with in partnership. A special performance was held by the Sikh Kids. A lunch was provided afterwards in the Bunjil Plaza. To honour this special day, Casey Council will light up Bunjil Place on 12 November and invite the whole community to be a part of it.

Berwick’s belter Berwick's intensity from the opening bounce until the final siren simply can't be matched. Their premiership victory against Narre Warren on Saturday - giving the club back-toback flags for just the second time in club history - was intense, finals footy laced with the right amount of class. After a third premiership in four years, the word 'dynasty' is deservingly being bandied around, and for good reason.
The club has a stranglehold over the southeast region - they're relentless, driven by success and are always chasing their next challenge. It's the cornerstone of all successful sporting clubs. While the weather may have been arctic in their 51-point win over Narre Warren, the Wickers put in a magical performance befitting of a champion team in the midst of a golden era. From the superstar Travis Tuck, who came to the club with a high expectation that has
now culminated with a best on ground medal in a grand final, to their champion skipper Madi Andrews, dynamic forward Harry Money, gun midfielder Bryce Rutherford and reliable defenders Jo West and Michael Riseley, the Wickers possess remarkable star power. "We pride ourselves on our relentless approach," Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman said in the aftermath of another premiership win. And as for Kemperman, he couldn't have a dreamt of a start to his senior coaching career

Truckie’s hay-fire heroics By Jed Lanyon A Lyndhurst truck driver has recounted the moment he helped his mate just seconds before his truck carrying hay bales burst into flames in Healesville. Fred Reid had just finished delivering a load in Healesville when he got the call for help from David Ayres on his CB radio. Mr Ayres had been driving his Kenworth truck, transporting two trailers loaded with hay along the Maroondah Highway when he thought he may have a flat tyre about 7.30am on 20 September. He pulled into a BP and put the callout for help on his radio for anyone in the area. "He called up and asked if I could sneak around him to see what the trouble was," Mr Reid recalled. Mr Reid said Mr Ayres was in "all sorts of bother" with smoke coming out the middle of the B-double. "Being a load of hay, in town and next to a petrol station, I suggested let's get it out of town before you lose the whole truck," Mr Reid said. Mr Ayres then drove the truck about 1.5 km out of Healesville, just past Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road where he and Mr Reid separated the two trailers and his prime mover to prevent the fire from spreading. "Literally seconds after we got the prime mover out from under the trailer, it just burst into flames," Mr Reid said. "We were standing probably 30 metres away and the heat was burning us; that's how hot it was." Without his assistance, Mr Reid believes Mr Ayres may have been left in a situation where his truck would have ignited in town, leaving him with no choice but to run for his own safety. "Poor fella, I wouldn't wish it on anyone what happened to him.
Fire crews at the scene.
Firefighters battle the blaze after a truck carrying hay caught fire in Healesville. "He's a good young kid, he was pretty switched on and acted pretty fast. If he hadn't have made that call, we couldn't have worked together to do what we did. "Afterwards he told me, 'I couldn't have done it without you, I owe you a beer'.

"Things could have been a lot worse and we were very lucky to have the outcome we had." Senior Constable Tom Juric of the Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol praised the actions of the quick-thinking drivers. He said the fire was caused from friction
through an upturned mudflap against the truck's tyres. The incident caused the Maroondah Highway to be blocked for several hours with fire crews on scene for five hours. A front end loader from VicRoads was also needed to push the hay off the trailers.

Farm burglar can’t recall By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Cranbourne man told a court he'd had a "few drinks that night" as he struggled to recall the details of a two-stage $50,000 burglary from a Pakenham farm. Travis Wood, 22, nonetheless pleaded guilty to burglary and thefts from the Bathe Road property in the early morning of 30 May. After the gate padlocks were cut, Wood in a Triton ute, and unknown offenders in another vehicle drove in. They allegedly stole two tandem trailers filled with wood splitters, power tools and 10 bee boxes from the unlocked shed. They took their loot to Wood's father's property in McCarthur Road Upper Beaconsfield. The same morning, the thieves returned to the farm to steal a Jayco caravan, according to police. It was delivered to the same Upper Beaconsfield lot. Wood took the trailers and tools to his Cranbourne home, police told Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 22 October. The caravan was recovered by police from the Upper Beaconsfield property. During a raid of Wood's home on 5 June, police seized one of the trailers, wood splinters and a chainsaw stolen from the farm. In a police interview, Wood admitted to the burglary and stealing the seized tools but had no memory of taking bee boxes and the caravan. He told police he also couldn't remember who his co-offenders were, due to his drug and alcohol use. Wood later directed police to the second trailer's location in a car park near Merinda Park railway station. It had been repainted a different colour since its disappearance. At the time of the burglary, Wood was not licensed to drive. He'd been suspended due to not completing a drug driver awareness pro-
gram, the court heard. A defence lawyer told the court that Wood had no recollection of how he got involved in the break-in. He not had an opportunity to treat significant mental health and 'ice' drug issues on a community corrections order before, the lawyer said. "He concedes the offending is serious." "And he can't remember a whole lot about it, which is a real problem," magistrate Jack Vandersteen replied. "There's nothing in his medical records that suggests any episodes of black-out." The 'memory loss' was an "easy way of deflecting", Mr Vandersteen said. "I don't accept you don't remember anything because it doesn't make sense. "I think you need to be more forthcoming." Wood told the court that "I did have a few drinks that night". "I've had things taken from my house as well," he said - referring to being the victim of a home invasion. Mr Vandersteen said that would have all been related to drug offending "if I read between the lines". He noted Wood was subjected to issues that "no child should be exposed to", which significantly impacted on Wood's mental health. Wood however avoided being involved in "high end" offending up until the "out of character" burglary, Mr Vandersteen noted. The accused was convicted and placed on a 15-month supervised CCO with treatment programs. He was ordered to submit a DNA sample to police.

Mum’s push for CCTV By Brendan Rees A Cranbourne mother whose teenage daughter was attacked at a bus stop has started a petition calling for authorities to install CCTV cameras. April Pearce said her 13-year-old daughter had been left traumatised school after a group of girls punched her to the back of her head on Lyall Street on Wednesday 16 October. She said her daughter had just got off the school bus about 3.30pm when she was set upon by the thugs, described of African appearance. Her 15-year-old brother and his friends tried to barricade the bus door in an attempt to stop her attackers from entering the bus. She managed to escape and call her mum, who then picked her up nearby and called police. "She was very intimidated ... she doesn't want to go to school," Ms Pearce said. "I stood up to them a couple of times and said 'Why are you doing this to my daughter?" she said. "They said 'Oh she's done nothing, we just hate her and we hate you'. "I've even approached the girl who started it - her mum twice in the last two years so that girl had actually stopped" but added the others had "kept going". She said the girls had also pushed her and threatened to slice her throat and "get bikies after me". The girls in the past have tried to steal her daughter's jacket and phone in the past, she said, adding there had been about 20 attacks at the bus stop in the past two weeks. "Every day my children come home and tell me about people trying to roll other children for their shoes," she said.

A 48-year-old mother has been fined due to having only a minor part in shoplifting a trampoline from a Kmart store just before last Christmas. She directed a triumphant 'Ha!' towards the Star News reporter as she left Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 22 October. As had been previously reported, the accused was with her two primary-school aged sons and an unknown male when she paid for bedding and a shirt at the self-serve pay terminal at Kmart in Fountain Gate on 22 December. At the same time, the trampoline in two boxes was loaded on a trolley and wheeled out of the store without payment by the unknown male, police told Dandenong Magistrates' Court. Defence lawyer Bernard Keating argued
that the accused had assumed that the unknown male had paid for "his" trampoline. The trampoline was later recovered in the shopping centre's car park. Police dropped charges that the woman had threatened to kill and attempted to strike an intervening customer who had followed them out of the store. On 22 October, magistrate Pauline Spencer said another person was "predominantly involved" in the theft. The woman was fined $500, plus $300 for a careless driving charge. On 20 November, she will contest a charge of refusing a drug-driver test, which carried a mandatory four-year driving disqualification. A change.org petition calling for CCTV cameras on Lyall Street has garnered more than 700 signatures to stop the violence. Casey manager of safer communities Caroline Bell said council was reviewing the CCTV within the municipality and "we're in the process of developing a policy management plan on the use and placement of CCTV cameras in public spaces." "Lyall Street in Cranbourne and surrounds will be considered as part of this process. In the interim, Victoria Police and Council will conduct a safety audit in Lyall Street, Cranbourne near the bus interchange," she said. Casey local area commander Inspector Donald Brown said police had gathered witnessed statements in relation to the assault and had also received further reports of public order issues on Lyall Street."Investigations are ongoing into this matter," he said, adding "Cranbourne police have increased their patrols of the area and will continue to task their resources to where they're needed most." "Police will continue to target those committing offences and are working hard to hold them to account."

Race is on for next mayor By Brendan Rees Casey's mayoral race is underway with councillor Rosalie Crestani officially announcing she was putting her hand up for the top job. With the next mayor to be decided on 29 October, Four Oaks Ward Cr Crestani said she would be honoured to take over the reins with a pledge to provide a "peaceful and united city with purpose, safety and security." At this stage no other mayoral contenders have publicly thrown their hat in the ring. Current mayor Amanda Stapledon has not indicated whether she will run again as mayor.Cr Crestani, who was currently serving as deputy mayor, said her "greatest driver" to become the next mayor was to address social issues in the community including mental health, drug and alcohol addictions, family violence, and unemployment. "I hope I can continue working in these areas to ultimately see our community set free from constraints and assist them in walking
Mayor Amanda Stapledon will finish up her term as mayor at the end of October. out their purpose for long term fulfilment," she said. Long-time councillor and former mayor Wayne Smith has ruled himself out, while former Cranbourne MP Cr Gary Rowe said he wouldn't contend due to his busy schedule. "It's something I would love to do but
you've got to be realistic in these things," Cr Rowe said. "I think Susan Serey might get up," he said, adding if she was to be voted in he would "probably" put his hand up as deputy mayor. Mayor Amanda Stapledon chaired her final council meeting on 15 October after 12 months at the helm. In her final speech, Cr Stapledon told fellow councillors as well as council staff and the public gallery that she was proud to serve as mayor and felt "a great sense of achievement and gratitude". "This year has been sensational - there is no other way that I can describe it," the two-time mayor said. "Every item and more on my mayoral bucket list has been achieved ... my commitment has always to do good for this great community and to do so; I know that this can only be achieved by working together with councillors and officers alike - to achieve the greater good
in making the City of Casey Australia's most liveable City. "I look forward to seeing who the next mayor is and to work to ensure that their year will be as terrific as mine has been," Cr Stapledon said. Among those to pay tribute the outgoing mayor was Casey chief executive officer, Glenn Patterson, who said Cr Stapledon would leave behind a "really impressive legacy" and "was a fantastic ambassador for the City of Casey" and thanked her for her "tireless effort" over the past 12 months. "I've worked with about 22 mayors over my career in the role as a CEO over many years and without doubt councillor Amanda is the most committed, the most energetic, and the most passionate of any of those ... no doubt about that," he said. Cr Stapledon was gifted a mayoral portrait as well as flowers and two photo books capturing some of the highlights of her mayoral year.
Mystery UFO landing creates a laugh By Brendan Rees It's the mysterious landmark that quickly fuelled rumours of alien visitors. The giant crop circle which had been etched into the grass of Kurll Park in Narre Warren North had heads turning on Friday morning, 18 October. While it sent the minds of UFO hopefuls racing, the rumours were quickly quashed when it was revealed the crop circle was the work of a birthday stunt. Owen Watson, who lives adjacent to the park, said his prankster daughter was behind the act as she wanted to surprise him for his 50th birthday.
"It's a great gift so I'll get out there and get some photos," Mr Owen added. He said the crop circle was closely kept under wraps by his family. "My wife took me out to the movies yesterday (Thursday) from about 3.30 and then out to dinner," he explained. "I could tell something was going on because I wasn't allowed back, I wasn't even allowed out to drive down certain roads. "I thought that they were decorating the house or something. I had no idea." "It's a bit of a joke in the house ... I'm always out on the balcony looking at night seeing what I can find," he says of his telescope.

"I've never had a crop circle before, that's pretty cool," he said, admitting he was known as an "alien enthusiast". After his daughter knocked on his bedroom door to say happy birthday, he also found a "card with a tin foil hat on the floor that I had to wear." She told him to look through his telescope when he says he discovered the mysterious circles and patterns. He said his 18-year-old daughter spent about five hours in the torrential rain with friends creating the piece. "It's every bit of half a football field," he said. "She should be studying for her VCE instead she's making crop circles," he laughs.

Snags and fun galore By Brendan Rees Narre Warren North fire brigade threw its doors open to public ahead of the summer fire season. There was plenty for families to do during the open day held on Saturday 19 October. The day attracted more than a thousand people which included live demonstrations of vehicle rescue, a barbecue, tours of the station, educational handouts, and a chance to check out the brigade's ultra-light tanker. There were also fire uniforms and helmets for children to wear, and a chance to sit in the driver's seat of a fire truck. The brigade's communications officer Aaron Tams said the open day helped build community relationships and awareness of what the fire brigade did. "The brigades and other services put on several demonstrations such as gas flare-off, casualty removal, thermal imaging in smoke filled structures, hazmat awareness and draughting water from static supplies," he said. "We really enjoy being able to put on these events for the community. After all we are there for them," he said. "The kids and the 'big kids' really enjoyed the different activities available to them like the Little Pat fire truck and getting to wear their own structure gear, using the brand new ultralight tanker to put out simulation spot fires." The brigade thanked Narre Warren SES, Victoria Police, Hallam fire brigade, Upwey fire brigade, Officer fire brigade, Rapid Relief Team, Kennards Hire Narre Warren, Narre Warren Baptist Church, Ambulance Victoria, Rob's Amusements and all brigade members for making the day possible.

Casey City’s Hi-tech bollards aim to reduce roadkill By Brendan Rees Hi-tech 'virtual fencing' will be deployed in a bid stop the amount of kangaroos being killed along a stretch of road in Lysterfield South. Casey Council will install about 40 electronic bollards on both sides of Churchill Park Drive west of Parkside Boulevard towards the Churchill Park Golf Club boundary. The bollards are activated at night by approaching vehicles and emit a flashing light and sound to repel wildlife from approaching the road while the vehicle is in the area - effectively creating a virtual fence. City of Casey will be the first Victorian council to adopt the new technology and mayor Amanda Stapledon said council was happy to support an innovative solution that improved road safety and protected local wildlife. "Council has responded to ongoing resident concerns in this part of Lysterfield South where we know there are far too many collisions between vehicles and local wildlife and we hope this technology will help to improve driver behaviour and protect animals," she said. The vehicle-activated warning signs are designed to alert motorists that it is a high-risk
zone for kangaroos and encourage drivers to slow down, especially during the hours between dusk and dawn when most collisions with wildlife occur. The road safety initiative comes after 12-year-old Shannon Tobin-Underwood of Lysterfield South started a petition in March to protect kangaroos from becoming roadkill on Churchill Park Drive. Her dad, Paul Underwood, put forward a submission to council on behalf of a community lobby group called 'Save the Roos' for possible improvements including the virtual fence. "I am so proud that my petition of 111 signatures has resulted in such positive results," Shannon said. "Although the reduction of the speed limit was the goal of my petition, I believe the virtual fence and large flashing warning signs are a major win." "I would like to thank Cr Crestani for really listening and supporting the Lysterfield South community," she added. The bollard technology, created by Wildlife Safety Solutions, has been successfully used across Tasmania and in Victoria by VicRoads on a section of Wellington Road in Lysterfield.
Shannon Tobin-Underwood started a petition earlier this year to reduce the amount of wildlife Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS killed on Churchill Park Drive, Lysterfield South. 191554 The early indications are call-outs to injured wildlife on Wellington Road have reduced significantly since the bollards were installed earlier this year. Council has also been successful in receiving funds under the Federal Government's Black Spot Program for six solar-powered flashing signs that will be installed on Churchill
Park Drive between Police Road and the golf course, and a nearby section of Power Road. Meanwhile, Shannon says she will be hosting a 'Kookies For Kangaroos Stall' on Sunday 8 December to support local volunteer wildlife carers and rescuers. This will be held at the park on Parkside Boulevard, located in the middle of the estate, from 11am. All welcome.
Award-winner Tarang vows ‘not one more’ By Danielle Kutchel Anti-domestic violence activist and campaigner Tarang Chawla has been named the Young Community Achiever of the Year at the India Australia Business and Community Awards. Mr Chawla received the award for his work on gender equality and the prevention of violence at a ceremony in Brisbane on Friday 11 October. The category was hotly contested with 12 finalists for the award, and Mr Chawla said it was an honour to be nominated and humbling to be considered in the same category as the other finalists. Mr Chawla is the founder of Not One More Niki, a campaign to end men’s violence. He also advocates for the rights of victims, survivors and their families. Mr Chawla began actively campaigning against domestic violence following his sister Nikita’s murder at the hands of her ex-partner in 2015, aged just 23. 28 STAR NEWS

The siblings spent some of their childhood in Hampton Park and Mr Chawla said he has fond memories of the area. “We know that sadly this region also has some of the highest instances of violence,” he said. “However, the community remains actively committed to addressing the issue.” Initially, Mr Chawla began campaigning as a way of coping with his own grief and sparing others from the same fate he, his family and Nikita suffered. He said his work builds on that of generations and women and men before him who have campaigned for equality. As the #NotOneMoreNiki campaign gains momentum on social media and offline, Mr Chawla is pragmatic about how it may change in future. “It’s hard for me to say what’s next, but whatever I do I believe in doing it with honesty
and heart. I know a lot of other campaigners who have done this work and it is not something you can do forever, because it takes its own toll. I will always care about this issue, but what that looks like in the future is difficult to know,” he said. He has previously spoken about his own suicide attempt earlier this year and about the stigma surrounding mental health, especially in South Asian communities, and says mental health issues can be seen as a liability in some cultures. “We have to be brave and honest about mental health within our communities, understand that it’s a part of being human and at some point we all go through it,” he said. “We have lost far too many people to suicide, especially in the South Asian community, and our collective silence and fear is part of the reason for that.” Likewise, he said the community needs to break down the stigma surrounding domestic

Dead Men Talking performance Dead Men Talking - the two-man, one-act stage musical stars Max Cullen as Henry Lawson and Warren Fahey as Banjo Patterson. The lively one act show finds the two legendary literary figures having a casual drink at the Leviticus Bar & Grill, Heaven''s Gate, and yarning about their legacies. They recite poems, sing songs and generally banter - and have a laugh about life’s changing circumstance. Two performances will raise much needed funds for the Wonthaggi Life Saving Club and the Frankston Hospital. Casey cat’s a comfort Three-year-old Connor wouldn't know life without his pet kitten, Puss-Puss. Connor had a rough start to life, with more health issues, specialist appointments and hospital admissions then a boy of his age should have to go through. To lift his spirits his parents decided to find him a furry friend to bond with during the tough days. They began looking around at local rescue organisations, when tragedy struck their family. Their youngest son, Albie, was stillborn on 26 November 2018. "We put our search on hold as my family and I navigated through this devastating, griefstricken journey," mum Mikaela says. Several months later, they resumed our search and came across Second Chance Cat Rescue in Cranbourne South. "They were nothing short of amazing, and suggested Renate, an older kitten, as a good fit for our family," From the moment Connor met Renate, the family of Maroopna knew "she was the one for us" and could provide her with a loving home and family. Connor, who renamed her Puss-Puss, does "everything together" and given "so much love and helped ease the anxiety" for the family since losing Albie. Mikaela says they are forever grateful to the team at Second Chance. "Words can't express how much love, joy and happiness she has brought to us," she says.
Minister for Education James Merlino joined Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas for the celebratory ribbon cutting to open the new facility.
New amphitheatre is open Connor with his new friend, Puss-Puss. Second Chance Cat Rescue is a non-profit organisation relocating de-sexed, vaccinated, and microchipped cats and kittens to good homes. Founded in 2011, they are run entirely by volunteers and rely on the generosity of their supporters to continue helping cats and kittens in need. They will be exhibiting at this year's Cat Lovers Show in the Adoption Zone, where guests can come and meet the many rescue cats and kittens available for adoption. The event will be held at the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne on Saturday 30 November and Sunday 1 December.
A new multipurpose amphitheatre has opened at Hillsmeade Primary School in Narre Warren South. The new amphitheatre will provide students with the space to explore activities related to the arts and sport, including performing arts shows, dance club, and an exciting new viewing area for school sports days. This project was completed with $150,000 in funding under the School Pride and Sports Fund, as part of a previous commitment by the State Government to invest $16 million to help strengthen community pride in schools and to provide sporting facilities for students. Hillsmeade Primary School's new facility, which officially opened on 11 October, will be able to host the wider school community for Christmas concerts and assemblies, while also having a flexible and engaging area for taking precious school photos.

‘The Cup’ tours Berwick All eyes were glued on the $200,000, 18-caratgold Melbourne Cup trophy when it made its way to Lexus of Berwick recently. The Lexus Melbourne Cup holds historical, cultural and social significance and is held annually on the first Tuesday of November at 3.00pm when it brings Australia to a standstill and is watched by more than 750 million people across the globe. This year marks the 17-year anniversary of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour, which has seen the coveted trophy travel over 600,000 kilometres and visit more than 450 towns and
cities across Australia, New Zealand and the world, allowing local communities to experience the magic of the 'Loving Cup' first-hand. Former Australian netball champion and 'The Block' contestant Bianca Chatfield made a special appearance at Lexus of Berwick on Clyde Road in celebration of the 'People's Cup'. For employees of Lexus of Berwick and their guests to see the iconic Cup before it is presented to the winning owner at the great race was a once-in-a lifetime opportunity. The Tour brings communities together in
celebration of the rich 158-year history of the Melbourne Cup, relaying the stories and the heroes intrinsically linked with the iconic race. This year the Lexus Melbourne Cup will travel to a record 39 destinations across six countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, China and the United Kingdom. The Lexus Melbourne Cup weighs 3.2 kilograms and contains 1.65 kilograms of 18-carat gold. The Lexus Melbourne Cup takes 250 hours to hand-craft and is made by ABC Bullion from 44 pieces of hand-beaten gold
sourced from Mt Carlton in Queensland - the first time the Cup will come from this mine. Seventeen years ago in 2003, when the Tour started, a star was born when Makybe Diva, ridden by Glen Boss, saluted for the first of her three consecutive Melbourne Cup wins. She was, and still is, the only horse to have won the great race on three occasions. The Lexus Melbourne Cup offers prize money of $8 million including trophies, maintaining the race's position as the richest handicap race in the world.
Jordy is making a genuine difference, one run at a time Jordan Wyatt is doing everything he can to make a difference. One run at a time. And not just to help his side win games of cricket on the weekends, but more importantly, to help overcome the stigma related to mental health. The Casey-South Melbourne batsman is donating $1 per run he scores this Victorian Premier Cricket season to Mindfull Aus, an organisation founded by Matt Runnalls aimed at encouraging those to come out of the shadows of stigma through self-acceptance and a greater education of mental health issues. For Wyatt, it’s all about creating awareness of mental health issues, and encouraging those suffering to speak up, and not suffer in silence. But on a personal level, the cause and everything it stands for and aims to achieve is dear to his heart after suffering from mental health issues, particularly anxiety in his teenage years. “I’ve previously had issues with mental health, and I know how hard it is to speak up, but once you do, it does get a lot easier, and I want to promote that positivity around it, and try and get rid of that negative stigma surrounding mental health issues,” he said. “So I’m looking for it as an opportunity to create a bit of awareness again.
“That’s why $1 per run is going straight to Mindfull and the work they do with especially young men, and not just the 18 to 40 bracket, it’s even younger now which is concerning.” Wyatt said that the first step to overcoming any debilitating mental health issue is being honest with yourself, and taking that plunge into self-acceptance and starting a conversation with someone that is close, and can be trusted. He firmly believes that it’s helped him get on top of his issues in the past, and managing it further into the future. “The biggest battle that anyone with mental health issues faces is owning up to it, and admitting there is even an issue there,” he said. “The thing is, once you do address it, get help and have people on your side and in your corner, they’re able to support you through it. “If you’re suffering in silence, people around you might not know you’re struggling, and therefore might not be able to assist you. “It’s hard; it’s a really challenging thing to be able to speak up. You get quite emotional thinking about it.” Wyatt said that the work Runnalls is doing with Mindfull Aus has inspired him to make a difference and encourage people to access the incredible mental health services available, and to do what he can to ensure people understand that it’s okay to not be okay.
“I’m friends with Matt Runnalls, the founder of Mindfull, and I’ve known him for quite a long time, and knowing him on a personal level is really important I think,” he said. “When I was at school, there definitely wasn’t as much accessibility to councillors and psychologists and all of the access we now have, and working in a school I’m able to witness that, and it gives me a broader understanding of it also. I definitely think it’s (removing the stigma) come a long way, and on the improve. “In my case, I want to be seen as a bit of a role model for young guys coming through the ranks, to be there for those that are struggling and need to talk to someone, and if they can see I’m raising awareness and funds for this organisation and this company, that they might see that and go ‘alright, there’s someone I have common interest with or whatever, and I can speak to that person’. “I feel as though that can hopefully help people speak up about the issues they’re facing, because I know that is 100 per cent the hardest thing to do. “I’ve had a lot of people around school, and my cricket club band together and support the cause - people have been nothing but supportive to me. “People do understand how much of a difficult time it is for young people that are going
through these issues, and that stigma is slowly dying.” Wyatt will be hoping that runs are pinging off his Redback blade across the course of the season, with the Swans star sporting a Mindfull Aus sticker on the back of his bat, all with the hope that people simply ask questions and want to know how they can get involved. But more importantly, Wyatt is hoping that the cause can make people are seriously look after their mental wellbeing in order to live a happy, healthy and fulfilling life. “It would have been nice to start the season a little bit better, but that’s fine, I’ll aim to improve in the coming weeks and hopefully I can raise a few funds myself,” he said. “It’s also really nice for other people to chip in along the way - it’s obviously great to play cricket, and I love the game, but for me personally, to be able to contribute on another level when it comes to donating some money that might not have been accessible if someone like me wasn’t raising awareness is great. “People are really starting to get around it, and show their support.” Anyone that wants to donate further to Jordan’s cause can head to give.everydayhero. com/au/Jordan-wyatt, with all funds raised going directly to Mindfull Aus and the work they’re doing. 18. WHO trained 1979 Melbourne Cup winner Hyperno?
They recently recorded one hell of a rare double - winning back-to-back Victorian state titles after also going back-to-back as league champions in the South division 15As. They defeated the West division champions from Spring Hills FC in the statewide semi-final, and then backed that up by defeating the North champion Bundoora in the final. They also - for the second year in a row won the Berwick City Cup. But in order to understand just how incredible this side is, one must go all the way back to 2016, when the same nucleus won the South division 12A league title. Right through the age groups since - under13s, under-14s, and now under-15s - they’ve taken on all before them and won. Coach Milan Mihajlovic and his assistant Ollie Pivac know the group better than anyone. They quickly identified the key ingredient behind the boys’ success. “It has to be down to their mateship - not only on the field, but off the field too,” Mihajlovic said. “They’re a great unit, and they work for each other - and that’s what real mates do. “It shows on the pitch - they fight for each other, they support each other, and it’s a real team effort. We’re not about individuals taking the limelight.” The cohesion of this remarkable group has only continued to strengthen over the years, and the players know each other’s games inside and out. “There’s always been some change - maybe one or two players will drop out - but overall the core of the team has been here for a long time and the new players who come in adapt to the style of the group,” Mihajlovic said. The group has cultivated its own culture, and any new player that joins has to fully buyin if they want continued success. It’s a nonnegotiable. “The new boys who come in can see straight away that it’s a disciplined side, and that they have to adapt to the way we play,” Mihajlovic said. “Obviously this team isn’t for everyone. “Players need to fit the mould of how we play. There are a lot of good players out there who trial for the team, but we don’t take everyone. “The ones who do make it - they’re coming in for a reason and they adapt to the style we play. “Life isn’t all about sport, but there are things you’ll learn in sport that you can take with you beyond that. “Our job is to make these boys good players, but also to play a role in developing them into good human beings. “We’re happy with what they’ve done with
The captain of the 2019 side, Joel Bandaranayake, with Filip Mihajlovic who captained last year’s group. them, and I can’t speak highly enough of them as a group - we love them.” Pivac gave some further insight into just what makes this Berwick City group so special. “A few of the boys, some really special players, have achieved incredible things in the past few years,” he said. “Three of the boys in our starting XI catch two buses and a train just to get here, and they didn’t miss one training session all year. “That part of the story needs to be told because they’ve got the dedication and the discipline just to be here. Their commitment is next level, and they’ve been doing it since they were in their early teens.” Earlier this year, Berwick City was accepted into the National Premier League’s Junior Boys (JBNPL) competition for 2020 onwards - serving to enhance the future pathway for the boys from the elite junior to senior ranks even further. “We want our players to play at the best level possible,” Mihajlovic said with more than a hint of pride. “Some of them have hung around because they just love the team and the club. “They don’t want to go anywhere else, and they’ve heard they might have a chance to play at that level and now they’re going to have that chance to play next year as a group. “After that we’ll see what happens, but we’ll just take it one year at a time and concentrate on next season - starting in November with the pre-season.” Last month, Mihajlovic was named as the under-16 coach for Berwick City’s debut JBNPL campaign. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Full points for Cranbourne The Cranbourne Bowls Club put on a great show over the weekend, despite the inclement weather conditions, with strong performances at home against both Hampton Park and Coatesville by the top two sides after Round 3 of Division 2 metro lawn bowls. Coach Lyn Quigg went on to comment after the game that it was a "great win today under tough conditions. I am very proud of the teams. The number one side picked up a maximum 18 points, while an outstanding result from the number two side - winning by six shots - gave us the best possible start to the season with both sides remaining undefeated after Round 3". SIDE 1, DIVISION 2 All four rinks played well to give Cranbourne a 36-shot win against Hampton Park in winterlike conditions with gusty wind, rain and a little sunshine along the way to put a smile on the faces of the home team. Cranbourne 87 (18 points) defeated Hampton Park 36 (0 points). SIDE 2, DIVISION 2 Skip Noel Hardy must have a strong back as he and his crew of Vic Butera, John Stanley and Roger Roscoe carried the home side to victory, winning by 21 shots to give Cranbourne an unbelievable six-shot margin against Coatesville. This makes it three wins out of three for the year. Cranbourne 79 (12 points) defeated Coatesville 73 (6 points).

Bucks in a strong position By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 AND 2 REVIEW - ROUND 2 (DAY ONE) Buckley Ridges are in pole position to push for a Turf 1 outright win when play resumes against North Dandenong on Saturday. And the dominance came through the Bucks' two overseas dynamos - skipper David White and West Indian Jerome Jones. Jones - a left arm tearaway - ripped through the Maroons after the Bucks sent the visitors in at Park Oval, snaring 5/45, backing up his impressive debut for the club in the opening round. The Maroons battled with the quick's pace and tight lines, and were rolled for just 100 despite a fighting 42 from keeper-batsman Shehan Fernando - who came in when the visitors were under the pump and managed to salvage something out of the innings. Daniel Watson (2/20) was also an absolute handful opening up with Jones, while spinner Wes Nicholas was impossible to get away, snaring 2/9 off 8.5 overs. The Bucks lost champion openers Daniel Watson and Paul Rudd early in their first innings, but managed to pull away through White, who carved a quick fire 58 before being dismissed, leaving his side 3/74 before rain took over for the rest of the day. Down at Strathaird Recreation Reserve, Narre South and Berwick are locked in an intriguing battle, with 54 overs bowled for the day. The Lions elected to have a bat, with Morteza Ali (42) getting things going for the home side immediately, before Brendan Rose and Ruwantha Kellepotha (2/50) got things moving for the Bears with a trio of quick wickets to leave the home side dangling dangerously at 4/53. But skipper Scott Phillips (33) and Joe

(1/35) trapped Thomas LBW to turn the tide. With former Casey-South Melbourne club champion Rose up and about on his way to impressive figures of 5/29, the Lions stumbled to
9/144 before stumps were called, with Rumesh Rangana unbeaten on 17. And down at Hallam Recreation Reserve, the Hawks have St Mary's 7/170 at stumps. The Hawks were all over the Saints in the early stages, with the seamers doing the damage as the visitors slumped to 4/44. But once again saving the day, impressive middle over batsman Junaid Kari (54) struck a vital half-century - his second of the season already - helping rebuild the innings alongside an extremely patient Rajika Fernando, who chewed up 134 balls to make a gritty 44. The clash between Springvale South and Heinz Southern Districts will be played as a one day match this Saturday. It was a rain-marred weekend in Turf 2, with just two games getting off to starts in a day on mixed weather. Narre North and Beaconsfield managed to squeeze in nearly 52 overs of cricket, with the Tigers on the back foot after some impressive bowling from the Rams. Sending the Tigers in, the home side made life difficult early in overcast conditions, quickly removing Ben Casey, Michael Dunstan and Brad Miles, leaving the visitors needing a partnership at 3/15. Despite skipper Brendan Johnson striking a vital 47 in a 66-run stand with Jake Cutting (31), the Tigers lost a clump of wickets to stumble to 7/117 at stumps, with Nathan Pulham bowling absolutely brilliantly to finish with 2/12 off 15 pressure-filled overs. And down at Greaves Reserve, Dandenong West compiled an impressive 268 in the first innings of their clash against Parkmore Pirates. The clash between Lyndale and Narre Warren, as well as Cranbourne and Dingley will be played as one day matches this Saturday.

The gritty Swans dig deep By Nick Creely The indicator of a maturing side doesn't always come down to how often it wins. It often comes down to how it loses, and what can be learnt from defeat and how it can be used as a tool for improvement. For Casey-South Melbourne, the first four rounds certainly haven't been easy. But it's a different side to that of the past, and the Swans are as determined as humanly possible to keep improving as a collective, rather than as individuals. After managing to escape with a draw after play was abandoned against Essendon on Saturday at Windy Hill, where the Swans made just 134 after a fighting 41 from Nathan Lambden helped save the day, facing an 0-4 start to the season when they welcomed local rivals Dandenong to Casey Fields on Sunday was not on their agenda. For all of the hard work - and expectation - the Swans simply needed some reward for effort, and to stay in touch. Similar patterns emerged early in the piece after Panthers skipper Brett Forsyth sent the Swans in to bat, with skipper Luke Wells - fresh off a plane on Thursday - Devin Pollock and Nathan Freitag, all returning to the sheds with the home side hanging precariously at 3/33. But the Swans wouldn't just allow the Panthers to tumble through them with ease. Emerging batsman Joel Mitchell - who has shown some signs in the last few seasons combined with the experience and composure of Michael Wallace, clawing back momentum, in a game-changing 125-run partnership. Mitchell cracked a sublime 83 off 99 balls, showcasing his rock-solid technique but ability to keep the runs pinging off the blade, while Wallace - who has started the season slowly worked his way back into some strong form, and right when his team needed them most.
Joel Mitchell raised the bat for a brilliant half-century on Sunday at Casey Fields. Picture: COURTESY OF CHRIS THOMAS A vitally important and quick fire 29 from Jordan Wyatt late in the innings helped the Swans set a competitive 8/218 off 50 overs, considering the bleak scoreline of 3/33 in the 14th over. Panther champion Brett Forsyth and Comrey Edgeworth nudged the ball around superbly, with the pair getting the visitors to 0/28 off the first 10 overs, before going at three overs over for the next hour to perfectly set the game up at 0/80 at drinks. With the pair set, and with plenty of hungry batsmen waiting in the sheds, the Swans needed a spark, and it came through skipper
Luke Wells (1/22), who forced a false shot from Edgeworth (46) to snare the opening wicket. Forsyth quickly nudged past another first XI half century (his 38th), with the Panthers seemingly cruising at 1/115 and with only around a run-a-ball needed. All-rounder Dylan Hadfield (1/35) got another fire started by trapping Cam Forsyth LBW, with the Swans starting to take some control after a pressure-filled period of bowling. Jackson Fry (2/36) managed to snare two vital scalps - that of Forsyth for a brilliant 76, as
well as the dangerous Lincoln Edwards for 11 - firmly putting the game in the Swans' grasp. Combined with some brilliant fielding efforts seeing the Swans really put the Panthers under the pump, the home side were digging deep. Despite Ed Newman (28) threatening to do damage, the Swans rolled the Panthers for just 202 off the last ball of the game with a run-out from Josh Dowling (1/32), finally putting the Swans on the board for 2019/20. Swans coach Brian Keogh told Star News that considering the start the group has had to the season, they never wavered in their belief. "Round 1 feels like a long time ago now, that Prahran game we just got completely outplayed, and then to fightback against Geelong gave us proof that it was an aberration against Prahran, and against Essendon they bowled well, and we probably dodged a bullet, 135 was probably not enough against their batting side to be brutal," he said. "To come out Sunday and just fight and show courage to say 'we really want to stand up here' was great. "We spoke a lot on Saturday night about being confident in ourselves, and to be the person, and if you went through our team, every single person made a contribution at a point in time." Keogh praised Joel Mitchell for his special knock, but also the middle-order for pulling together and finding a way to make a competitive total. "Joel's 80 and Wally's (Michael Wallace) 50 were great, and Joel's innings was of the highest class, and then Jordy (Wyatt) made a really important 29," he said. "It was a high class 80 (from Mitchell) - he got out when he probably had 120 not out on offering, and he'll learn from that, but it was a knock of the highest order."
