Diwali festival shines bright at Bunjil By Brendan Rees
The Indian community celebrates Diwali. 199662
One of the biggest Indian festivals of the year was celebrated at Bunjil Place on Saturday 26 October. Hundreds gathered for Diwali, known as Hindu's Festival of Lights, which featured all the colour and sounds of India. The evening was bustling with vendors serving a wide variety of cuisines, while crowds also had the chance to dance to some classical and Bollywood beats. There were also various workshops including yoga, art, cricket, cultural stage performances, rides and more. The night sky lit up with a magical fireworks display to cap off the day.

Cr Flannery was a former member of the Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association, while Cr Rowe, a former police officer, was the Liberal MP for Cranbourne from 1992 to 2002 before being elected to Casey Council in 2012. In accepting her new position as mayor, Cr Serey thanked those who have provided mentorship and support during her time on council, in particular her fellow ward councillor Tim Jackson and former Casey mayor Mick Morland. Born to Chilean parents, Cr Serey said she understood the "hardships and aspirations of newer arrivals and multicultural communities". "We are indeed very lucky to have the opportunity to live and build new lives in this great country of ours of which I hope our community will continue being very proud," she said.

"Issues affecting our young people and their families today and, in the future, will continue to be at the forefront of my decision making. "I am a practical person committed to achieving practical outcomes which can make the lives of our City of Casey residents easier, more productive, more rewarding and more enjoyable." She thanked outgoing mayor Amanda Stapledon for "her hard work and making people with disabilities special focus in her community work" and hoped to continue in her footsteps. The first-time mayor is the youngest mayor since the City of Casey was established in 1994. Supporting Cr Serey during her term will be the two newly elected deputy mayors, councillors Rex Flannery and Gary Rowe.

Casey councillor Susan Serey has become City of Casey's youngest mayor. As the newly elected mayor, the 29-year-old has pledged to keep rates down and "focusing on the issues that matter". Cr Serey was voted in during a special council meeting on Tuesday 29 October. She will serve as mayor from 2019 to 2020. The Edrington Ward councillor of seven years said she was humbled to take the reins and was excited for the year ahead. "No doubt, I will learn a lot more this year, but you can be assured that I will work hard, focus on achieving practical outcomes and foster a strong teamwork so that we can continue delivering for our residents and rate-
payers of today, while continuing our work towards creating Australia's most liveable city for tomorrow," she said. Cr Serey, who unsuccessfully ran as a Liberal candidate for the seat of Narre Warren South at the 2018 state election, said she her priorities would be a focus on young people and their families, making Casey a safe and inclusive community, improving transport, boosting the economy, making Casey the most liveable city and "creating a sense of place in our communities" "As the city's youngest mayor, it is beholden upon me to give some special focus to Casey's youth, making sure that our young people have the opportunities needed to grow and develop into healthy, positive, and productive citizens," Cr Serey said.

You’ll see our people working in the Narre Warren and Beaconsield area over the next few months. There may be some disruption to trafic, and possibly to power supply, while we test the technology and upgrade the power lines. This new technology is being rolled out across communities most at risk of bushires. In some areas, it will be operational in time for summer. While AusNet Services and the Victorian Government believe this new technology will make a real difference in reducing the risk of bushires from powerlines, it does not eliminate all risk. It’s important to ensure your Bushire Plan is up to date. For updates on our progress, follow AusNet Services on Facebook.

IN BRIEF
IBAC to hear Casey corruption claims The state's anti-corruption watchdog will hold public hearings as a part of its investigation of planning and property development decisions at Casey Council. The hearings are part of an IBAC investigation Operation Sandon into allegations of "serious corrupt conduct" into councillors and property developers in Casey. IBAC Commissioner Robert Redlich QC will preside over the hearings. He said the hearings will consider whether "public officers" involved in planning decisions were improperly influenced by donations, gifts, pro bono services or "other hospitality" "These public hearings will examine the transparency and integrity of planning and property development decisions, and whether
lobbyists or planning consultants have had undue influence over state and local government planning and property development decisions," Commissioner Redlich said. "More broadly, they will consider whether current systems and controls in place are sufficient to ensure the integrity of the planning process, and if serious corrupt conduct is identified, how organisational culture and practices may have fostered that conduct or prevented it from being detected and stopped." The hearings start Monday 18 November, 10am at 11 Exhibition Street, Melbourne. They are open to the public. City of Casey has released a statement saying: "We are aware of the investigation and are cooperating fully with IBAC. Given this is an ongoing matter, we will not speculate or make any further comment at this point in time."
Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association spokesman Brendan Browne said the association welcomed the news IBAC would hold public hearings into allegations of corruption at Casey Council. "For years we have had concerns about how conflicts of interests are managed at a local government level and the lack of transparency that often exists," he said. "Without wishing to pre-emptively pass judgement on the City of Casey, we feel confident that shining a spotlight on their planning and development decisions can only be a good thing. Without IBAC and other investigative bodies, it is all too easy for local Government to avoid serious scrutiny. "We look forward to any recommendations IBAC may make," Mr Browne said.
Teenager airlifted to hospital Two people have been taken to hospital following a crash in Blind Bight on Sunday 27 October. Casey Highway Patrol attended the scene where it's believed a car failed to give way on Warneet Road at Blind Bight Road about 7.20pm. Ambulance Victoria said paramedics treated a man aged in his teens who has leg injuries. He was flown by air ambulance helicopter to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition. A pre-school aged boy was treated for minor injuries. He was taken to Monash Medical Centre in a stable condition. Police are investigating. Anyone who witnessed the crash or with dash cam footage can contact Crime Stoppers or make a report at Crimestoppersvic.com.au
Man arrested following carjacking A knife-wielding man who allegedly tried to steal a car in the carpark of Casey Hospital on Wednesday 23 October has been arrested. Police say a 55-year-old woman was sitting in her car near the entrance to the hospital's emergency department when the man allegedly got into the passenger seat just after 5.30pm. The man allegedly produced a knife and demanded that the driver get out of her car. The woman attempted to grab the keys from the ignition and as she did, the man pushed her from the car, police say. The victim fell to the ground, fracturing her shoulder, while the man drove away in her Mazda sedan. Police arrested the 44-year-old man of no fixed address, in Wantirna South earlier Thursday 24 October. Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives charged with aggravated carjacking, recklessly cause serious injury and theft of motor car. He has been remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrate's Court on Friday 25 October.

The artistic talent of Hampton Park Primary School students has been in the spotlight. Last week, the school held an art show following the success of last year's inaugural show. The theme for this year's art show was based on an Australian artist study with a free choice piece and featured work from every student in the school. "We believe that art gives our students an opportunity to be imaginative and creative in a hands-on way of learning," principal Liz Davey said.

Cutting edge By Mitchell Clarke Catering for the eighth-fasting growing municipality in the country, Casey Hospital's much needed $135 million redevelopment is nearing completion, with external signage being installed on the new tower. Once complete, the full expansion will allow an extra 25,800 patients to be treated annually through an extra 8000 surgeries and procedures while also supporting an extra 1300 births. The redevelopment will consist of 128 new inpatient beds as well as the hospital's first intensive care unit in the tower, meaning critically ill patients presented to the emergency department won't have to be sent to other hospitals. Six new operating theatres, a new day surgery unit, an upgraded pharmacy, back-ofhouse areas and expanded parking facilities are also included in the expansion. Minister for Health Jenny Mikakos visited the site to view the signage and tour recently completed patient recovery areas within the new tower. "Casey Hospital looks after one of our most rapidly-growing communities and this massive expansion will ensure they have the facilities they need to continue providing the best possible care," Ms Mikakos said. "The hospital will be able to treat critically ill patients on site, undertake more surgeries and procedures and support thousands more births - which are services we know this community needs." Member for Narre Warren South Gary Maas said the redevelopment was part of a larger plan to provide healthcare to the booming outer suburbs. "This is all part of our plan to ensure those living in Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs have access to world-class healthcare now and

Firefighters lend a hand By Brendan Rees Two volunteer firefighters from Clyde CFA fire brigade travelled to New South Wales in an effort to help fight the Busbys Flat fire. Andrew Strang and Andrew Palmer joined a Victorian contingent of 21 firefighters after flying out from Melbourne Airport on Friday 25 October for a five-day deployment. With several large bushfires raging across NSW, Victorian firefighters were requested to assist with the fire activity in and around Busbys Flat, about five hours north of Port Macquarie, which has burnt more than 50,000 hectares and destroyed homes. Mr Strang has been involved in a number of bushfires during his four years experience as a volunteer while it was the first for Mr Palmer to encounter a bushfire in NSW after completing wildfire training last year. Fortunately the duo has work rest days which didn't impact on their employers, who would have granted special leave anyway as both support the CFA. Clyde CFA captain Milligan ensured there were enough volunteers at the brigade to answer any calls before approving the deployment. Neither member was injured during their deployment. CFA chief executive officer and chief officer Steve Warrington said crews will work hard to support our partner agencies in NSW during this challenging time. "These devastating fires have seen properties lost and communities under threat so we are pleased to share these resources and much needed support with our interstate colleagues," Mr Warrington said. Over the last month Victoria has sent over 50 people to NSW at various times to assist our colleagues with these challenging fires. These personnel have assisted in a varied and specialist positions and have worked hard under difficult conditions.

Casey set to dump plastic
A Berwick woman has told of her shock after thugs hurled a milk carton at her car, shattering the windscreen. Barb Davies was travelling along Cresthaven Boulevard in Berwick when her windscreen was struck by the object at 12.53pm on Friday 25 October. "I didn't even see it flying in the air to be honest, it happened that quickly," she said. "It just completely shattered my windscreen and glass all over the dash." Ms Davies was on her way to an appointment, driving just under 50km/h, when the incident occurred. She said she pulled over straight away and was helped by bystanders who found the one litre milk carton about 10 metres down the road "completely ripped apart". "One picked up the item off the road because they questioned 'What's happened? What's happened?' "I just ended up on the side of the road shaking like leaf. "I had to pull myself together and sort of work out what was going on ... I rang my husband and he came and calmed me down," she said. Luckily Ms Davies was not injured and is thankful the cartoon didn't go through her windscreen. She hopes to have her car repaired later this week but will be "out of my pocket unfortunately." Ms Davies, who posted dash cam footage of the incident on Facebook in the hope to find the culprits, said she was quite upset with the amount of "nasty" messages she had received from strangers about the cost of repair. "It's really frustrating me. The quote alone was $1,400; that's not even the towing," she said.
Lightweight plastic shopping bags will be a thing of the past in the City of Casey when the State Government's plastic bag ban comes into effect this November. From Friday 1 November, it will be illegal for retailers in Victoria to supply lightweight plastic shopping bags including degradable, biodegradable and compostable bags. Casey Council is encouraging all retailers to cease plastic bags and for shoppers to get into good bag-habits early by remembering to grab their reusable bags before they leave the house. The community is highly supportive of the upcoming state-wide ban with more than three quarters of residents already bringing reusable bags with them. Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon said retailers across Casey and Victoria had already chosen not to offer plastic bags. "We have seen many retailers as well as shoppers already getting into great habits by using other resources such as empty cardboard boxes, paper bags, cloth, jute or hessian bags instead of plastic bags," she said. "Considering the impact of plastic pollution and the long term effects it has on the environment, the state-wide ban is the first step toward reducing plastic pollution in our environment and protecting the wildlife of Casey and Victoria." Although Victoria has relatively low litter rates, litter from lightweight plastic bags still poses a problem in our community and is the main source of litter Australia wide. By the end of 2019, all states and territories across Australia, except NSW, will have banned lightweight plastic shopping bags. Produce bags used for unpackaged foods such as fruit, meat, seafood or bread; garbage bags and bin-liners; dog waste bags will still be acceptable.

Katrina Coulson: Not trying to be inconsiderate but wondering how paying for a carer is the council's responsibility? Any other job it's your own responsibility. Jennie Range: Money would be better spent sorting out recycling stuff instead of talk if extra bins and also charging us to have a second recycle bin now or have it taken away. Where is that extra money going to now? If they bring in the extra bins what will they charge us for those. Rovel Shackleford: I personally have no issue with this; the councillors have a demanding role which in the main they do well! The only issue is accountability which should be driven through governance! The amount is actually quite small considering the size of the council budget and also be comparison to some other LGAs! Deborah Mawhinne: Money would be better spent on getting rid of the gum trees in the Timbarra Estate Tim Allan: How does this relate with other councils expenditure? Joey Desiree Volange: That's why our rates are ridiculous MeriSonno: No use having more rubbish and recycle bins if they just dump it in landfill. They need to make everything recycled. Colleen Wright: I have no issue with councillors travelling overseas if they are able to bring back resourceful information and ideas that will benefit our community. Did these trips do this? With the technology we have today by using international link ups etc could this money have been better spent? Andrew Pispek: Why are these wanna be politicians travelling overseas? They run a council not a state or country.

Five-hour school commute By Jessica Anstice Students are travelling up to five hours per day to attend Nossal High School, with some travelling more than 110 kilometres just to get to class. The Berwick selective-entry school principal Roger Page says he is still a "bit surprised" about how far some students are prepared to travel. About half a dozen, out of 200 Year 9 students, travel significant distances with three or four committing to "extreme" distances. "In the early days I was concerned that these were the students who might drop-out because of how far they are travelling but it
turns out they are highly committed," Mr Page said. "These students are high performing - they don't go home and sit on the couch to watch TV. Some make reasonably significant choices about outside of school activities. "Our students and their parents are highly motivated and highly aspirational and prepared to take on the challenge. Some families will move to the area because they are very keen to have their children enrolled here and some students from the countryside will stay in Berwick during the week." Students travel all the way from Traralgon, a 117 kilometre trip, as well as Warragul, Jindi-
vick, Craigieburn, Mernda and Mornington Peninsula. Nossal High School is an academically selective coeducational government high school, and one of only four in the state. Monash University's co-ordinator of gifted education Dr Leonie Kronborg believes the students travelling far distances are "extremely motivated". "Those students obviously think it is worth it," Dr Kronborg said. "Students don't make the sacrifices and parents don't expect them to make sacrifices unless they think it's going to be beneficial. "It's not a pressure - it's an enjoyment for
the students to be in classes where they're being challenged." Receiving over 2000 applications and offering only 200 places each year at Nossal High School, Mr Page says the enrolment demand is high. "Over the last 10 years, the 200 students enrolled annually come out of up to 97 different schools and those schools change each year," he added. "About half of our students come from government schools and the other half comes from non-government schools scattered across metropolitan areas and Gippsland but it varies every year."
Safety in mind in grants boost for Casey Four public precincts in Casey have been revitalised with new lighting, improved public amenities and better accessibility routes. Minister for Crime Prevention Ben Carroll today toured sites in Cranbourne, Cranbourne East, Berwick and Endeavour Hills, which have benefited from more than $420,000 worth of Public Safety Infrastructure Fund grants. Mr Carroll joined Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon and Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards in visiting the Camms Road Shopping Precinct in Cranbourne on Thursday 24 October to mark the project completions and to announce additional funding of $120,000 for the City of Casey as part of the latest 2019-20 Public Safety Infrastructure grants round. The Camms Road Shopping Precinct received a range of upgrades including new footpaths, seating, signage, rubbish bins and bicycle racks, with the improved amenities encouraging better use of the area and deterring anti-social behaviour.
The redesign follows concerns around public safety and anti-social behaviour raised by local business owners. Buchanan Skate Park in Berwick received five new lights in and around the skate park to enhance safety for people using the park at night. Charles Green Reserve Car Park in Endeavour Hills also received increased lighting and signage, improving accessibility and safety for residents accessing the nearby senior citizens' and sporting clubs. The additional lights and improved footpaths around the car park will enhance the safety and confidence of pedestrians and members accessing the reserve in the evenings. The Casey Recreation and Aquatic Centre and Stadium Complexes in Cranbourne East has seen the installation of 33 solar lights and 68 bollards to support safer movement and restrict vehicle access from pedestrian zones. Mr Carroll said Public Safety Infrastructure Fund was a terrific initiative "that highlights
the importance of government, police and local councils working together to create safer communities." "These projects will improve natural surveillance in public areas, build community confidence and enjoyment in Casey and will also assist police in combating criminal and anti-social behaviour," he said. Ms Richards said the upgrades would help foster a safer community for residents, business owners and visitors to Casey. "This funding has played such a pivotal role in making sure we engage with locals, address concerns and better protect the community," she said. Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon said this is a fantastic example of the council working with the State Government and residents to achieve great things for the community. ‘Joffa’ opens up on youth By Brendan Rees He's the well-known Collingwood cheer squad supporter every rival footy fan loves to hate. But there's so much more to Jeff "Joffa" Corfe, the larrikin who became famous for his iconic gold jacket. He opened up about his rocky childhood after speaking to members of the Rotary Club of Narre Warren at Fountain Gate Hotel on Wednesday 23 October. Joffa's father was a drunk and his mother, who suffered from mental illness, was a violent and "nasty" woman. Joffa, one of four boys and three girls, remembers his mother picking up an old kerosene heater and throwing it against the wall in an attempt to light the house on fire. "We were lucky to get out alive," he recalls. His mother, who was a Collingwood supporter, would often blame her children if her team lost. "There would wither be a cold bowl of soup or a hunk of tripe (stomach lining of farm animals)," Joffa says. "You would be dry retching every time you put this tripe in your mouth that's how foul it was". At five, Joffa was sent to Allambie boys' home in Burwood after his mother was sent to a psychiatric hospital. He attended Victoria Park in Abbotsford in one of his first outings with volunteers where he met some "wonderful ageing Collingwood ladies". Joffa would move back and forth from his East Preston home but at 14, he was kicked out of home by his mother. He remembered banging on the door, pleading to be let back in, only to be told to "p***s off, you're not wanted anymore more". He quickly learned to fend for himself on the streets of Melbourne while he slept in abandoned buildings and pinched food to survive. He found comfort with another homeless

Joffa lied about his age when he went for a job at a plastics factory before moving into a boarding house that reeked of urine and faeces. He continued to watch Collingwood play at Victoria Park which he says "quickly became a home for me". Joffa rose to fame when he began wearing his gold jacket during footy games in 2002.

For the past 19 years Joffa has helped the homeless as a welfare worker with the Salvation Army, and is also an advocate for epilepsy awareness as his daughter lives with the neurological condition. Today, to the surprise of many, Joffa says he will be moving to Fiji next year and won't be attending any more footy games. Berwick’s belter Berwick's intensity from the opening bounce until the final siren simply can't be matched. Their premiership victory against Narre Warren on Saturday - giving the club back-toback flags for just the second time in club history - was intense, finals footy laced with the right amount of class. After a third premiership in four years, the word 'dynasty' is deservingly being bandied around, and for good reason.
The club has a stranglehold over the southeast region - they're relentless, driven by success and are always chasing their next challenge. It's the cornerstone of all successful sporting clubs. While the weather may have been arctic in their 51-point win over Narre Warren, the Wickers put in a magical performance befitting of a champion team in the midst of a golden era. From the superstar Travis Tuck, who came to the club with a high expectation that has
now culminated with a best on ground medal in a grand final, to their champion skipper Madi Andrews, dynamic forward Harry Money, gun midfielder Bryce Rutherford and reliable defenders Jo West and Michael Riseley, the Wickers possess remarkable star power. "We pride ourselves on our relentless approach," Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman said in the aftermath of another premiership win. And as for Kemperman, he couldn't have a dreamt of a start to his senior coaching career

A convicted paedophile "inveigled" his way into a South-East junior football club as a trusted sponsor and sexually assaulted a 12-year-old boy in 2008, the County Court of Victoria heard. Hugh Lean, 66, pleaded guilty to the indecent assault of a child - after initially denying the attack in the boy's bedroom. He also pleaded guilty to four counts of breaching his sexual offender reporting obligations. Between 2012-'16 Lean failed to report to police that he was involved with the junior football club and that he was using the alias 'Aaron Smith'. In 2008, Lean sponsored the juniors with $1500 a year for jumpers, footballs, pizzas and other meals. Childless, he falsely told members that it was in tribute to his son who died in a car crash and had loved football. It gave him "special status" at the club, Judge Felicity Hampel said during sentencing on 28 October. The "considerable grooming" included Lean befriending and drinking with the victim's father at the family home. Over the 2008 season, he occasionally slept over at the victim's home after drinks, was entrusted to drive around the family's children and to get them treats at McDonald's. The victim had thought Lean was "cool", Judge Hampel said. On the night of the assault, Lean was invited to sleep on the children's bedroom floor. The victim woke up that night in his bed "where any child should feel safe" - in a headlock and with Lean's hand over his mouth, Judge Hampel noted. Despite the boy's resistance, Lean overpowered him and indecently assaulted him. Lean stopped only after another child got up to go to the toilet. The victim struggled free of Lean's loosened grip. While the boy was too scared to sleep, the accused later crawled onto his bed. Lean
threatened him not to tell anyone or he'd "come back for you". Nine years later, the victim reported the incident to police out of a desire to stop Lean from harming another child. After the assault, he had led a troubled, angry adolescence, stopped playing football and disengaged from school. He was unable to tell his parents for many years, the court heard. Even as an adult, the victim had regressed to panic attacks and anxiety - like a "frightened child" -when he encountered Lean. "I felt like he took a lot of me that night," the victim stated to the court. "My innocence was lost that night. I lost trust in my elders." At the time, Lean had already been jailed in 2002 for rape and indecent act with another 12-year-old boy. A psychologist in 2002 had assessed Lean as not a paedophile. He had no sexual interest in boys, the psychologist concluded. "How wrong that was," Judge Hampel said. In late 2008, Lean was placed on a 24-month CCO - including sexual-offender treatment for soliciting a sexual service with a 14-yearold boy. Judge Hampel noted Lean's neglected childhood brought up by alcoholic parents, as well as his "lonely and isolated life" since. His rehabilitation prospects were "guarded" despite his remorse, early guilty plea and no subsequent "contact" offences. Lean had only recently acknowledged he was abused as a child, and that he indeed was sexually attracted to boys, Judge Hampel said. She recommended for Lean's eventual release on parole, including a sexual offenders program. Lean was jailed for up to six-and-a-half years with a four-and-a-half year non-parole period. His term included 122 days in pre-sentence detention. Prior to the hearing, Lean was already required to report as a sexual offender for life. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Maths a hit, thanks Jess By Danielle Kutchel

Teaching excellence is all in a day's work for Hillsmeade Primary School teacher Jess Szalek. Now in her fifth year of teaching, Ms Szalek focuses on making learning authentic and likeable for her students. In her maths classes for example, she keeps students engaged through song, creating catchy ditties to capture those often-tricky numeracy concepts. Kids are often involved in writing and producing the songs too, which are then recorded and put on the school's intranet to be broadcast across the school. The songs are often parodies of popular tunes, and Ms Szalek says her students are now associating their favourite radio hits with maths. "I still remember my times tables from school and I remember learning them through songs in class," she says. "That worked for me as a learner, so I try to bring it into the classroom. It doesn't work for everyone, but we want to cater for every students and music is another way we can cater to certain styles of learning." Acknowledging that some students learn through bookwork, some through tunes and some through hands-on physical learning, another of Ms Szalek's ideas is to take her students outside to study angles by applying the lessons to goal kicking in a game of AFL - keeping it authentic to what her students like. Now, her efforts to make learning accessible to every student have earned her a national teaching award.
Jess Szalek accepting her award. Ms Szalek was honoured with the $2000 Excellence Award at the recent Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute Choose Maths Awards. "It's pretty surreal, it speaks volumes about our school and the way we go about things," she says of the award. "It's very prestigious and humbling, but I'm just trying to do what every teacher does." She says the award has reaffirmed the direction her teaching is going in. "I would love to use it to reach other staff and other networks and use it as a stepping stone to develop more consistency across our network and area and even Victoria. "I would like to make sure we can build collective efficacy in numeracy improvement in all students - the more improvement in student outcomes, the better. The students are the main reason why we all do this and if I've got something that works well, I want to share with other teachers and maybe reach a few extra learners," the award winner says.
Relief for the relievers By Danielle Kutchel The Casey Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) branch is many things to many people. But most of all it is relief: from poverty, fear and hunger. From humble beginnings at Queen Victoria Market five and a half years ago, the Casey ADRA branch has grown to three locations, staffed by around 60 regular volunteers. Encompassing the Cardinia, Casey and Dandenong local government areas, ADRA provides healthy food and meals to hundreds of residents, a community leaders outreach at Fountain Gate and counselling and support groups for women, men and youth. Victoria and Tasmania director of ADRA, Rebecca Auriant, says demand has increased statewide with around one in five people experiencing food insecurity. Casey ADRA Cafe Team Leader Beata Stednik runs a food pantry from her home in Narre Warren North. From there items are distributed to people experiencing food insecurity as well as other relief agencies. Ms Stednik and her team work closely with other local organisations like Transit and Casey North Community Information and Support Services, who help to identify the neediest residents. They receive food donations from organisations like Secondbite as well as companies including Simplot, Nandos, Lite n Easy and local bakeries, which provide excess produce to be distributed to those who need it. Ms Stednik says it's important to realise that their support is not just for homeless people, but rather anyone who needs help. "It's focusing on people who are in hiding, struggling with food shortages but they won't come and tell you because they're shy," she says. "We've got a family that was existing on bread and butter, but they came to collect
ADRA is underpinned by justice, compassion and love. 198579 meals to take to Queen Victoria Market for the homeless in the street even though they were struggling themselves. I said, 'you can't do that'. "We look at people and say they've got a car, they've got a nice house, but you'd never know that day to day, they struggle to feed their families, so it's important for us to find those families to help them out so they won't end up homeless." Volunteers also cook meals to be packed and given out at their regular spot at Queen Victoria Market each week, and provide cooking classes to teach people how to cook their own healthy meals on a budget. ADRA is one of several organisations in and around Berwick to receive substantial support from Coles. But with demand always growing, Ms Stednik says ADRA is always looking for more support to enable them to continue their holistic activities. Volunteers can put their hand up to run a cooking class, cook meals for distribution, lend an ear for socialising at the ADRA cafe, help with fundraisers or get in touch with other charities that might be able to team up with ADRA.

Car into pole closes road By Mitchell Clarke Police have said a woman in her 70’s was “extremely lucky” to survive a serious crash in Cardinia on Tuesday 22 October. The woman was travelling on Ballarto Road when she struck a power pole which came crashing down and blocked the road just after 3pm. The sole occupant of the vehicle was able to walk to an ambulance stretcher after SES volunteers assisted in removing her from the vehicle using a spine board to exit via the passenger side. Despite being able to walk from the wreck, the woman was transported to The Alfred hospital in a serious condition, with an Ambulance Victoria spokesperson unable to provide details on the injuries sustained. Police said the driver didn’t appear to be speeding at the time of the crash and said there was no evidence she was affected by drugs and alcohol. They’re investigating whether fatigue or distraction played a role in the crash but said it was a timely reminder to ensure drivers are

Emergency services arrived at the scene on Tuesday 22 October just after 3pm. 199480 well rested before getting behind the wheel. “She’s extremely lucky to walk away from that,” leading senior constable Brian Thorne said. “This road provides no room for error so
we’re urging motorists to ensure they’re well rested and adhering to general road rules. The notorious road was closed between Cardinia Road and Tooradin Station Road for hours
as crews worked to remove the power pole. Motorists took to social media urging authorities to take action on the road. “That road is a disgrace, it needs an upgrade,” one woman said. “It needs widening and resurfacing ... so many people are now using this road.” A spokesperson from The Alfred later confirmed the woman’s condition had been downgraded to stable.
Students have a wheelie great day By Brendan Rees Getting out and about on bicycle was a feeling like no other for these special needs students. Narre Warren's Dandenong Valley Special Development School enjoyed a world of fun when students took to the criterium cycling track at Casey Fields on Tuesday 22 October. The day featured a jumping castle, sausage sizzle and bike riding with the help of Casey Cycle Club volunteering their time on the day. Each classroom provided their own activi-
ties for the students including puzzles and colouring in sheets. They also had the opportunity meet with police officers, firefighters, and paramedics. Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon also attended. Teacher Robert Fong said the day was designed to help students become familiar with new surroundings. "It's important that students get as many opportunities as possible to be outdoors, enjoying some exercise and engaging with the community in a calm and controlled environ-
ment," he said. "There was a huge sense of achievement; not only from our staff but the parent helpers and volunteers that gave their time to be a part of what was another successful event". Mr Fong said special thanks went to staff member Lisa Tucker, who was the "driving force behind the massive task" of organising the event. Bikes on the day were provided by the school as well as Casey Council and Springvale Park Special Developmental School.

PEACEFUL GARDEN LOVERS’ PARADISE DESIGNED to provide a peaceful and relaxing setting, this garden includes a mix of natives and ornamentals to encourage and provide a safe habitat for native birds and insects. The garden was inspired by visits to open gardens in Australia and Europe, learning from friends and haunting nurseries and garden catalogues for ideas. The owners had a desire to “bring the garden into the house” and encouraged planting to provide a view of the garden from every room. Each season brings new colour and surprises with spring bulbs and blossom, summer roses, perennials and flowering natives, autumn colour, camellias, and a changing landscape through winter. All blended in with native trees providing shelter for kookaburras, currawongs,
king parrots and rosellas. Honeyeaters, wrens, finches, eastern spinebills delight in the nectar from the array of natives and blossom. Yellow and red tail black cockatoos and gang gangs visit when the season brings their favourite native seeds. Outdoor entertaining areas blend in with the garden and provide private space for dining and entertaining. A wood fired pizza oven set in dry stone offers a relaxed and informal entertaining space for long afternoons sharing the garden with friends and family with the parrots dropping in for a late afternoon visit. Quiet garden spaces provide a place for reading and contemplation. A no fuss approach to garden maintenance has been adopted over the 35 years of developing the garden to ensure time to sit back and enjoy the space created. ●

Push for refugees
By Brendan Rees
By Brendan Rees A former child refugee is calling on Casey Council to support a motion to make it easier for community groups to sponsor refugees seeking asylum in Australia. Amnesty Australia’s refugee campaign coordinator Shankar Kasynathan says people fleeing their homelands had few options to find safety - however community sponsorship was one option. Mr Kasynathan was three-years-old when his family abandoned their home in war-ravaged Sri Lanka in 1987. Fortunately his family was sponsored by a community group in Australia and avoided being transferred to “the hell that is Manus Island or Nauru”. Mr Kasynathan, who today has degrees in economics and public policy, said his family had “wonderful memories” from church groups “who went out of their way” to provide gifts including beds, a TV, a dining table, and food at their Mount Waverley home. “The house we were renting was a social housing property managed by the council and a church. We later bought it, and it’s still home today,” he said. Mr Kasynathan was a guest speaker at Casey North Community Information and Support Service’s annual general meeting hosted at the Old Cheese Factory in Berwick on 16 October. He said a fairer refugee community sponsorship program was needed as Australia’s current community sponsorship program
Amnesty Australia’s refugee campaign coordinator Shankar Kasynathan, third from right, with a group of refugees advocating for a more generous community sponsorship program. Picture: SHANKAR KASYNATHAN had some flaws. The program, he said, was “slow and expensive” and worst still, for every refugee sponsored by community, the Federal Government resettled one fewer from its own humanitarian intake. He hoped Casey Council would get behind the 32 councils around Australia who have already passed motions to improve the current sponsorship program and expand a neighbourhood-led solution to the global refugee crisis. “Every day communities around Australia welcome new neighbours into their neighbourhoods. Sometimes those new neighbours are refugees and the role councils play in welcoming them so that they can rebuild their lives in safety is crucial,” Mr Kasynathan said.
Community sponsorship is a model where members of the community are able to sponsor visas for refugees, who wish to begin the process of rebuilding their lives in safety in Australia. He said Amnesty was calling on the Federal Government to step up and ensure that the intake of refugees under community sponsorship was “above and beyond” any existing humanitarian or visa quotas, and to lower the program’s prohibitive visa fees. Mr Kasynathan said Amnesty was also campaigning for the Federal Government to “really revisit the costs associated with sponsorship”. Mr Kasynathan said the community sponsorship model had worked successfully in Canada for almost 40 years, welcoming more than 280,000 refugees through the program.
Narre Warren South P-12 College’s Year 11 VCAL students have banded together to raise $6000 for various charities. During an assembly on Monday 28 October, students presented cheques to Breast Cancer Network Australia, Leukaemia Foundation and Starlight Foundation on Monday 28 October. VCAL leader Flynn Wilkinson said the donations, which was part of the school’s Pay it Forward program, was a highlight on the College calendar. Money was raised through a VCAL concert, sports day, breakfast, trivia competition and a 48km ‘Walk to the City’. “All these projects are student-led and places in the various organising groups are highly sought after. This speaks to the pride that the students take from their achievements,” he said. The school has raised an incredible $106,000 for charities since 2006.

Outstanding VCE results continue to place us as the top independent school in this area. The Certificate of Global Responsibility is progressing well and students from Year 8 to 12 are being educated in international mindedness, ethics and critical thinking. STEM continues to be a major focus and 2019 Science Week is facilitating numerous opportunities for our students.
When not at school, Helen performs and tours with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus and has sung at the MCG Grand Final, the Commonwealth Games, the Olympics and with celebrities including John Farnham and Teddy Tahu-Rhodes. Helen has a deep understanding and awareness of student learning and wellbeing. As the Principal of a new school, she has been responsible for establishing a vibrant learning culture at St Clare’s and ensuring that the needs of the students are at the forefront of the growth of the school. That is why education is her passion.
Wayne Haworth Vision HPSC: Student Empowered Learning Hampton Park Secondary College is a large, culturally diverse learning community situated in the City of Casey growth corridor. We are rich in diversity and wholehearted in our pursuit of excellence. Our values of Respect, Learning and Working Together guide our school programs. From 2020, we are transforming our approach to learning. We are committed to embedding an education model that is student-centred and focussed on personalised learning pathways. When students are passionately engaged in their education, at their point of need, learning deepens, and outcomes improve. We recognise that all students are unique and different with individual passions and interests and as such we want to provide students with the opportunity to individualise their educational program. Our world is rapidly changing and so must our approach to learning. Sir Ken Robinson in his book, “Schools Kill Creativity”, reminds us students can often have their learning stifled. Professor Yong Zhao suggests that education requires a ‘Paradigm shift’. This year Hampton Park Secondary College (HPSC), joined the Future Schools Alliance (FSA) and commenced re-designing our curriculum and our approach to learning to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. At HPSC, we strive to create a culture of learning that enables ‘learning to be done with students rather than to students’. Our innovative, tailor made approach to learning assists students so that no student is held back, and no one is left behind. Learning is an organic process. By creating optimal conditions for learning, students thrive. From 2020, we enable students to be more empowered to take control of their learning. I invite you to book a school tour, to see our dynamic learning community in action.

Say thanks, buy a poppy The 2019 Poppy Appeal has begun, and the Berwick Sub-branch needs your help to raise much-needed funds to support our veterans. Berwick sub-branch President, Wayne A'Vard, is calling on the local community to support this year's Poppy Appeal, "from November 1, our volunteers will be selling the much-loved and iconic red poppy in our local community." "By purchasing a poppy, you are not only remembering those who have served in the past, but you are also helping to support those who are still serving today, as 100 per cent of the proceeds from the sale of every poppy goes towards supporting service men, women and their families in times of need." Mr A'Vard said. RSL Victoria state president Dr Robert Webster added: "Every donation to the Poppy Appeal contributes to the RSL's vital work of supporting veterans and their families when in need." "For example, the funds raised by the sale of single $10 Poppy Appeal pin may go towards the purchase of a mobility scooter for an elderly veteran, pay for a young veteran's crisis accommodation, and support health and wellbeing programs for veterans throughout Victoria,' he said. Dr Webster went on to say that people should feel proud when they wear the Poppy. "You should feel proud when you wear the red poppy, as your donation will have helped to change a veteran's life." he said. Poppy Appeal merchandise can be pur-

Dark clouds may have threatened as thousands of motorbikes descended on High Street in Cranbourne but it didn't dampen the spirits of riders or those cheering them on. Crowds gathered in droves as motorbikes laden with chrome and leather waved goodbye as they headed en-mass to the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix on Saturday 26 October. There were high-fives, grid women walking on stilts, outstretched arms from the crowd taking photos, chequered flags, and flashing lights from Casey Highway Patrol motorbikes as they escorted the riders. The event, hailed one of Casey's biggest events, also featured market stalls, food and drink vans, workshops for kids, face painting, sausage sizzles and fire brigade displays. Casey Radio also broadcast a live-to-air coverage of the event while 16-year-old Ebony Portelli, who was the winner of Star Search for a Cause and Casey's Got Talent 2018, sang the national anthem. For the first time this year, a lucky member of the public was chosen to go up in the cherry picker with the Casey mayor to help wave off the riders. That special person was Vanessa Ferriman who was the winner of a Facebook competition to determine the waver. However, Ms Ferriman decided to give the once-in-a-lifetime prize to her brother Steve Ferriman as a gift. He followed in the footsteps of legends like Cathy Freeman, Arj Barker, Leisel Jones and Shane Jacobson for the experience. Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon described the day as incredible and thanked the weather gods for not spoiling the party. "The number of bikes and the crowd was heartening to see and confirmed that no matter the weather, this is an event well worthwhile, and so beneficial to both the City of

The Swans put to the test By Nick Creely Casey-South Melbourne has its collective back to the wall against a star-studded Carlton team after a a day with several rain delays in Victorian Premier Cricket. With play unable to get underway until 12.15pm due to a ferocious late morning shower, Blues skipper Evan Gulbis had little hesitation in sending the Swans into bat, with his supreme bowling outfit ready to unleash. Luke Wells and Devin Pollock strolled to the middle to face a bowling trio consisting of quicks Cam Stevenson, Evan Gulbis and Xavier Crone, who have a combined 29 First Class matches between them, with Crone making his Victorian debut just a week ago, and showing some impressive signs as a seamer. Stevenson got the ball to talk early, snicking off Pollock to keeper Brayden Stepien, but Wells - and his experienced vice-captain Nathan Freitag - dug deep to guide the home side to lunch at 1/37 in a rain-marred session, and with a platform to launch after the break. With spits and spurts of heavy rain making life difficult, Freitag looked assured after the break, particularly in driving through the covers off an electric bowling outfit that attacked the stumps and really looked to test the strengths of the left-handed Swan.
But just as the rain got heavier and the players were preparing to come off, Luke Wells chipped one back to spinner Tom Smyth to depart for a well-made 31. Only minutes after the rain interval, in-form batsman Joel Mitchell shouldered arms and was given LBW, and suddenly the home side were 3/73. Freitag continued to show plenty of class, crunching Stevenson for consecutive boundaries through the off-side to reach his maiden first XI half-century of the season, but only moments after Michael Wallace was undone by a ripping short ball by the Blues quick, Freitag had a brain fade off Smyth to depart for 52, with rain once again falling forcing the players from the field. At 5/101, the Swans continued to lose wickets at an alarming rate despite a crisp 26 from Jordan Wyatt, with the Blues always seemingly having the answers with the ball in hand. But enter Nathan Lambden. The Swans spearhead with the ball - blessed with grit and plenty of heart - once again provided valuable late-order runs, crunching his second first XI half-century of his career, combining superbly with the tail to eventually bring the home side to 190, with Stevenson eventually prizing Lambden (53) out to finish with four wickets, continuing his stunning form.
Nathan Freitag looked solid for the Swans with a determined half-century. 199461 Pictures: ROB CAREW Lambden also notched up a vital 41 against Essendon in Round 3, and is slowly and surely becoming an important component of the batting side.
The Blues survived seven testing overs before stumps as daylight faded past 7pm, finishing 0/20, with the dangerous Stepien sitting 11 not out.
Nanopoulos snags seven but the Cats get the cream By Nick Creely VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET ROUND 5 Although James Nanopoulos ran riot with the ball against a star-studded Geelong side, Dandenong still faces an uphill battle to claim victory on Saturday. With seemingly-perilous overhead conditions unavoidable and a wicket that, in recent times, has misbehaved, returning skipper Tom Donnell won the toss and sent the Cats in. It took only two Jakeb Thomas deliveries for the decision to pay off with the big quick sending Geelong's opener Mitch Reid back to the shed inside the first over of the day. But it was the elegance and experience of James Nanopoulos who did the brunt of the damage from then on. Nanopoulos claimed two wickets in the space of three balls to change the game early on and move the Cats to 3/19 - his figures at that stage, 2/2 from five. With Eamonn Vines dead-batting everything at one end, gloveman Josh McDonald opted to fight fire with fire by going after the likes of Peter Cassidy in an attempt to shift momentum. When Vines was trapped in front LBW, Nanopoulos had three and seemed impossible for the batsman to score from, let alone survive.
James Nanopoulos was impossible to keep out on the weekend with career best figures of Picture: ROB CAREW 7/43 199458 All concerns of the threat of the Dandenong bowling attack washed away with the quick claiming 7/43 from 15.5 overs and assisting heavily in bundling the Cats out for 155. The wicket looked an extremely difficult batting deck and it was proven in the Panthers' reply, when Brett Forsyth was the early wicket. Comrey Edgeworth and Tom Donnell nudged the ball around before Edgeworth was dismissed leg before. Through Edwards and the returning skipper, the Panthers were able to scrounge to 2/42, before Geelong's Dom McGlinchey took it upon himself to challenge the stupendous figures of Nanopoulos.
The quick took 4/4 in the space of 12 deliveries to rattle the middle order of the Panthers. Ed Newman's difficult season continued with another scoreless knock, while Grundmann-Perera didn't have a dream debut innings as the two were among the scalps of McGlinchey. While chaos embarked at one end, Tom Donnell could only watch on from the other as his side crumbled from 2/42 to 6/50. Play is set to resume with the Panthers at 6/54 and Tom Donnell unbeaten on 27. MPCA - PENSINSULA DIVISION ROUND 3 Although suffering a comfortable defeat, Pearcedale showed promising signs in the second week against Main Ridge, Not only avoiding a threatening outright but demonstrated some flair with the bat. Main Ridge declared with a 98-run lead and 54 overs remaining in the day. At 4/18 in reply, the Dales looked to be rolled over once more, but a fighting number of innings by Paul Filipone (29), Callum Bradford-Briggs (30) and Jarryd Herbert (30) wiped away any chances of a disastrous start. The Dales finished the 54th over at 8/118, avoiding an outright loss. VICTORIAN SUB-DISTRICT - EAST/WEST ROUND 2
Endeavour Hills suffered a heartbreaking loss at the hands of Altona. The Hills posted 9/274 last week, but were chased down in the final over by Altona who finished 6/275. Altona was in some early trouble at 2/35 but strong half-centuries to Greg Sheehan (69) and James Grubb (92 not out) guided the home side to victory. Hemantha Jayasundera was the pick of the bowlers for the Hills with 3/75 from 26 overs. WOMENS PREMIER CRICKET ROUNDS 7 AND 8 Dandenong went 0-2 on the weekend when the Panthers took on the powerful Ringwood side. The Panthers were sent in to kick off proceedings in the first match and posted a solid 6/106, Tiana Atkinson the pick of the batsman with 18 at the top of the order. In reply, Rams skipper Bhavisha Devchand carried the innings home with a stirring unbeaten 52, as her side chased down the total in the 18th over. The following fixture had Ringwood setting this time and after Dandenong superstar Emma Gallagher had 3/11, the Panthers were in the box seat needing 99 for victory. But the Panthers fell nine runs short, finishing 9/99 at the end of its innings - Gallagher again leading the way with 27.
Softball shines through the gloom of the miserable skies came up against the Cobras with the Cobras winning 7-0. In a fantastic sign, a number of new, enthusiastic kids are playing this season, with their coaches doing a tremendous job in leading them. The Social Ladies took to the diamonds next in what turned out to be the best conditions of the day - strong winds, but no rain. Berwick Geronimo played Doveton in a very close game with Geronimo emerging 7-5 winners. Cranbourne Comets also played out a close one with the Comets victors 9-6.
Berwick Chickasaw started well against Narre Warren Penguins, who came home strong to beat Chickasaw 18-10. The MVPs were too strong for Chiefs with a comfortable 9-0 win. Ladies Open 2 played in the worst conditions of the day, having everything thrown them. They came off the field twice due to lightning and heavy rain. Only one game was completed with Berwick Cheyenne going down to Young Guns 9-3.

The weekend's Casey Softball Association round started under particularly windy and showery conditions, testing players and spectators. First up was the Mixed Under-15 competition. Doveton played Cobras Grey in an entertaining contest that saw the Cobras win 16-10. Berwick and Cobras Maroon also played out a high-scoring game with Cobras also winning 17-11. The Mixed Under-13s were up next. Unfortunately Berwick had to forfeit, which gave Royal Falcons their first win 7-0. Doveton

Students of Hope Australia Soccer Academy in Casey-Cardinia have created history by breaking a Guinness World Record.
A new local world record Students of Hope Australia Soccer Academy (HASA) in Casey-Cardinia have created history by breaking a Guinness World Record. About 25 HASA students - plus their families, mostly from Cranbourne North, Narre Warren South and Pakenham - were part of an attempt to set a new world record for the world's largest soccer lesson last Saturday. The attempt involved a 30-minute soccer lesson guided by former Socceroo Kevin Mus-
cat, Matildas striker Kyah Simon and Brazilian soccer stars who are part of Tour of Hope (TOH), a non-profit event that is conducting soccer clinics in Casey-Cardinia this week. A total of 835 participants from children to grandparents were verified for the official count by a Guinness World Record adjudicator. The result beat Poland's record in April 2018 of 705 participants. Organised by Woodlea Estate, the attempt

DDCA TURF 1 AND 2 REVIEW - ROUND 2 (DAY TWO) As the Turf 1 season progresses, Springvale South captain Ateeq Javid is going to cause some serious nightmares for opposition bowlers. The overseas pro crunched a century - only days after flaying 88 in a Twenty20 against Berwick - in Saturday's one day match against Heinz Southern Districts at Alex Nelson Reserve. With day one washed out, the Bloods and Cobras played out a 37-over per innings match. Batting first, Javid, alongside aggressive opener Nathan King (42) crunched 63 for the first wicket, setting the scene for a potentially mammoth total. Javid (110) continued on his merry way, combining with Bloods legend Craig Slocombe (23) for a 44-run stand, displaying the kind of class that'll be on show for the Turf 1 season. Playing the anchor despite going at a run-aball, Javid crossed over for a brilliant century, a knock glit-tered with 16 fours. But a more disciplined bowling effort - particularly in the final few overs - ensured the Bloods were rolled for 222 off the final ball of the innings, with Udara Hettige snaring a late hat-trick to finish with 6/52 off seven overs, while Josh Dinger continued his strong start to the season with 3/21 off eight terrific overs. The Bloods looked to have seemingly had the game in their grasp despite champs Kaushalya Weeraratne (38) and Michael Davies (46) looking good through the middle period, but Cameron Dinger (43 not out) made a late charge at an unlikely run chase. Despite sending the ball flying to the boundary, the Cobras ran out of time, finishing 7/217 off 37 overs in a narrow loss to last
season's grand finalists. In the remaining games, Buckley Ridges (9/233) easily accounted for North Dandenong (110 and 3/135) on day two of their clash at Park Oval, while Narre South (9/144) drew with Berwick at Strathaird Recreation Reserve and Hallam Kalora Park also drew with St Mary's (7/170). In Turf 2, meanwhile, Parkmore Pirates looked, at one stage, to be coasting in their chase of Dandenong West's sizeable 268 at Greaves Reserve. But the Westers dug deep to secure their maiden win of the Turf 2 season in a stunning performance led by veteran Peter Atkinson. The Pirates were 2/110 with time on their side and Aditya Ganesh (36) and Amal Athulathmudali (63) batting beautifully, but the home side slowly began to turn the tide in a decisive period of cricket. Soon enough, with Atkinson (5/50) controlling one end with super skill, the Westers cracked the game open and stunningly rolled the visitors for 131, with the last eight wickets coming for just 21 runs. Atkinson bowled 14 maidens in an incredible display of bowling, while Thushira Madanayaka (3/10) was also vital through the middle period. In the only other completed game across the round, Lyndale took the points quite comfortably against Narre Warren at BJ Powell Reserve. The Magpies could only muster up 117 in 27 overs after struggling to bounce back from some early wickets, with the home side racing down the runs and finishing on 4/157 in 28 overs. Priyan De Silva struck 60 in the win. Cranbourne (1/23) and Dingley was washed out at Casey Fields, as was the clash between Narre North and Beaconsfield (7/117). Thursday, 31 October, 2019
