MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk I spent most of last weekend down at the Warwick Showgrounds and along with thousands of others soaked up the atmosphere of 'Australia's Most Famous Rodeo'. Even in hard drought times our community still manages to put on a great rodeo and campdrafting show for locals and visitors. It was great to see country people - and those from the city - enjoying some much-needed camaraderie, and for those 'off the land' an albeit brief reprieve from the challenges the weather is throwing their way. Rain may be in short supply around here but there is no shortage of proud bush spirit. One of the many highlights was the win by campdrafter Kerry Turner in the Warwick Gold Cup - the first time in many decades the Cup has been won by a female competitor. Likewise, the best in the rodeo business celebrated success in the APRA National Finals Rodeo, which Warwick again hosted in 2019. The dust has settled on the Showgrounds arena but once again a mighty job was done by the many volunteers who make the biggest event on the Warwick calendar possible. Jeremy Sollars

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…

IT’S A WRAP FOR WARWICK RODEO The 2019 Warwick Rodeo and Campdraft wrapped up last Sunday 27 October at the Warwick Showgrounds with the Australian Professional Rodeo Association (APRA) National Finals, and the final of the Warwick Gold Cup Campdraft - the 'Melbourne Cup of Campdrafting'. For the first time since Gertie Brook rode Popeye to victory in 1951 the Warwick Gold Cup was claimed by a female competitor Clermont campdrafter Kerry Turner, with 14-year-old mare Hingus and an aggregate score of 265.5. A cool-headed Kerry finished a halfpoint ahead of Nebo campdrafting legend Pete Comiskey on Harry. Kerry is a former Australian Breakaway Roping Champion who returned to campdrafting several years ago. Sunday's Warwick Gold Cup final was made even more poignant with a special tribute to another legend of the sport of campdrafting, Peter Gesler, who died in a light plane crash in the South Australian outback in July of this year. Peter Gesler operated the Donell Park Stud at Greymare west of Warwick and was remembered as a much-loved member of the campdrafting family, and a passionate breeder of top-line performance horses. · Winner - 2019 Champion of Champions Campdraft - Michael Hayes and Waderman · Winner - 2019 Ladies' Silver Cup Campdraft - Haley Condon and Bracelet · Winner - 2019 Canning Downs

PIPE BAND PLAYS TO BIGGEST AUDIENCE The Warwick Thistle Pipe Band performed in front of a crowd of more than 50,000 at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo at Sydney's ANZ Stadium in mid-October. Spokeswoman Pamela Clark-Dickson said band members were "exhilarated to be part of this record-breaking event, which had a cast of over 1500 performers and which was set against a backdrop of a full replica of Edinburgh Castle". "The band took a contingent of 50 pipers and drummers to the REMT to participate in the Salute Taker ceremony which opened the Tattoo at both the matinee and the night shows," Pamela said. "It was officially the largest band in the opening ceremony of all four of the Tattoo shows, comprising a third of the players in the largest band for the Saturday

evening event. The Warwick Thistle Pipe Band was extremely proud to represent the Southern Downs at the REMT and has been overwhelmed by the level of support shown by the local community, including the Southern Downs Regional Council, a wide variety of local sponsors, including McDonalds and John Dee and individual supporters. "Family and friends accompanied the band to Sydney on the tour bus, provided by sponsor Crisps Coaches, which is emblazoned with the band's Tattoo Express portrait kindly donated by Zooma Signs." The band took the opportunity to rehearse during its outbound overnight stop at Tamworth, attracting a small but enthusiastic crowd with one using his drone to take band footage from a new perspective. ●

THE HEART OF ART BY JEREMY SOLLARS any people sense they might have an 'inner artist' yearning to find the opportunity for expression but as yet haven't found the outlet to do so. The good news is that for aspiring artists of any age or background the Southern Downs and Granite Belt regions have a thriving artistic community waiting with open arms to embrace your hidden talent. Perched near the top of the hill on Willi Street in Warwick's west is the Warwick Artists Group studio, a comfortable and airy venue in which all kinds of creative souls find space to explore their chosen artistic endeavour. The studio was formerly the schoolmaster's house at the old Swanfels State School in the mountains east of Warwick and found a new life of its own in the early 1980s, acquired and moved to its present location through the efforts of the

props," Juanita says. "My family has a farming property here in the Warwick area and I moved here some years ago. "Since retiring I've been able to devote much more time to art but it's always been a big part of my life in different ways. "I started painting as a child and took classes when I was young and then went on to the Brisbane Technical College. "I love working in oils - they're my favourite medium, but I also love freehand drawing and in recent years I've been learning to work with watercolours, which requires a very different set of skills. "I find I just lose myself when I'm painting, sometimes days at a time - it's very therapeutic and it gives you a true sense of peace. It's something you can do either by yourself or with a group of others, which is what the studio is all about. "We have a very vibrant artistic scene here in Warwick and as a group we really enjoy encouraging people to come along and learn with us.

"The social interaction is equally as enjoyable and beneficial as the chance to create. "We're a really diverse group - some people are quite serious about art as a pursuit while for others it's a bit of fun. "We have a lot of retired people who like me have found the opportunity to take up art again and it's also a way for people new to the area to meet others. "A lot of people think they need a natural ability to paint but that's not the case expression comes from your heart and that's the starting point. "Techniques can be learned. "There's hope for everyone - there are so many different facets to art as a pastime and even digital technology has become a part of that nowadays. "You just have to choose what appeals to you. Many of the works created by group members end up being sold to the public and the group was pleased with the success of their 'Art Hub' which ran for the duration of the 2019 Jumpers and Jazz in July Festival in Leslie Arcade on Palmerin Street. "It was the first time we'd run a proper shop and it's something we plan to do each year ongoing as our major fundraiser," Juanita said. HANSON WEIGHS IN ON WATER BY JEREMY SOLLARS Queensland Senator Pauline Hanson visited Stanthorpe last Saturday 26 October as political pressure mounted on the Morrison Government to ramp up its response to the drought. Senator Hanson's visit coincided with delivery of donated water to Stanthorpe's Granite Belt Drought Assist through the 'Let's Send Them A Truckload Water Convoy'. The One Nation leader's visit also came at the end of a week in which Prime Minister Scott Morrison was warned the Coalition could suffer political consequences if it fails to deliver a 'drought stimulus package' to lift the economy of regional towns affected by the drought, including Stanthorpe and Warwick. Senator Hanson said she has been "fighting about the water issue since 199697". "I have been on about it because I could see what was happening back then because we weren't building the water infrastructure," Senator Hanson told the Free Times ahead of her visit. "It's devastating to see what is happening to Stanthorpe and the surrounding areas, which is really on the doorstep of my own home, and I am doing my bit to help. "I'm honoured to join the convoy and I'm looking forward to visiting the region and speaking to local people." The Morrison Government earlier this

The government's potential drought stimulus package which could see councils in drought-affected regions provided with up to $10 million each to shore up local businesses and jobs as well as support primary producers.

The overall assistance package could be worth up to $1.3 billion but details remained under speculation as at printing of the Free Times this week. It is understood Nationals MPs - which include local Federal MP for Maranoa David Littleproud, who is also Federal Minister for Water Resources and Drought - are privately fuming over what they see as

Scott Morrison's failure to act decisively on drought policy response. They are also understood to be concerned at the potential for a voter shift in drought-affected regions to Pauline Hanson and One Nation. ALP Opposition leader Anthony Albanese last week exploited the apparent division within Coalition ranks over drought response and pointed out what he said was the government's "refusal" to work with the Opposition on the issue. Mr Littleproud appeared on '60 Minutes' last Sunday evening as part of a story exposing wastage of water in the MurrayDarling Basin due to water trading options introduced by previous governments which see massive water allocations preferenced to big corporate interests - including almond production - at the expense of family farmers. Mr Littleproud stopped short of committing to a full-scale investigation of alleged rorting of water allocations in the Basin but said Australia needed to have a "philosophical conversation as a nation in a mature way about should water be treated as a commodity like coal or gold". "My personal belief is it isn't," Mr Littleproud said. "It's a different commodity, it's a source of all life, and the evolution of this market may have taken us to a point that isn't in the national interest." ●

THE SPIN

CUP FEVER ABOUT TO HEAT UP It is time to start paying attention to the racing pages and begin sifting through the mountain of information that will help you find the winner of next Tuesday's Melbourne Cup. Despite NSW racing's best efforts to derail the Melbourne Cup, with the Everest and the Golden Eagle and suggesting the date be changed (shock horror) there is nothing that captures the imagination of the Australian Public quite like the Melbourne Cup carnival. While the racing purists love the Cox Plate and Derby (and what's not to love) the magic is in the history, drama and spectacle of the Melbourne Cup. So I say back off Sydney and leave our Cup alone because it really is "our" Cup - everyday Australians' Cup, even if it is won by overseas marauders again. And that is highly likely. So as you go about sharpening your pin, dusting off your tried and true system or choosing your favourite, name or colour in the field, pause for a moment. Did you realise the Aussies are playing a T20 International Cricket Series? You can be forgiven if it slipped through to the keeper. We have been busy keeping up with racing and the Rugby World Cup (the demise of the Kiwis at the hands of the POMS). The rugby league boys are still running around playing Nines; the Oceania Cup (how good were Tonga) and the Senior and Junior Kangaroos are busy strutting their stuff. Just when you thought it was safe to put away the glasses and concentrate on summer sport the 2020 Rugby League draw has just been released, reminding us all that while Christmas is only a matter of weeks away, the NRL season kicks off on March 21st in case you are in danger of suffering withdrawal symptoms in that short window when Rabbits and his cohorts give their tonsils a rest. In case you did miss it, the Aussies out-gunned Sri Lanka in the first T20 with D Warner smashing a ton in a welcome return to form and they return to the Gabba on Wednesday hopefully to repeat the dose. Hold on to your hats cricket fans, there is more, lots more, to come. However this weekend will be dominated by horse racing (the VRC Derby) and the final of the World Cup with the Poms taking on the Springboks for "Bill". That famous little trophy - the W G Ellis Cup. What struck a chord with me watching the Poms and Kiwis, aside from the much-publicised Haka was the real feeling players from both sides displayed singing their national anthem. A direct opposite to many of our Kangaroos who while happy to play in the green and gold bearing our national coat of arms and collecting large pay cheques choose not to participate in the Australian anthem. If they feel that strongly, perhaps they should also choose to take an early holiday and not the cash. Casey SEVEN STEPS TO HELP WITH YOUR MELBOURNE CUP SELECTION 1. Saddle cloth numbers: Nos.4 and 12 have both had 11 wins. No.1 has 10, No.8 has eight and No.11 has had seven wins. 2. Barrier Draw: Horses in barriers nine to 12 have had five wins in the past 13 years. First run in 1866, barrier 18 is still waiting produce the Cup winner. 3. Age: Four and five-year-old horses have won the cup 93 times. Eleven of the 14 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

Inglewood visitor John Slack and local golfer Rino Pionvesan enjoy a chat before tee-off in Sunday's Stanthorpe Golf Open. past 12 cups have been won by horses aged either four, five or six. Almandin the exception when he won in 2016 as a seven year old. 4. Boys v Girls: Overall, stallions or geldings have won it 69 times but the mighty mare Makybe Diva holds the record of three consecutive wins. 5. Weight Matters: Horses carrying 54.5kg (eight wins) have the best winning record in the Cup followed by 52.5kg (seven) and 53kg (seven). 6. Colour me black and blue: Jockey's silks including predominantly royal blue or navy blue have won the Cup 1p times while black hasn't fared too bad either with 17 wins (but not recently). 7. Taking the odds: Odds of 10-1 appear to be most successful (15 wins) and 8-1 13 wins. Favourites have a poor recent record unless you are a bookmaker. If you can compute all those stats and you're looking for a 10-1, four or five-yearof this you should be looking for a horse (a good start) weighted at 54kg and carrying either blue or black silks and definitely not jumping from barrier 18. If that has you even more confused try the pin trick - works well for many. Good luck and good punting. Always a popular date on the golfing calendar both days drew big fields. In total 165 players from 14 clubs took part in the two events. Local knowledge proved a pivotal difference in the major event on Sunday, the single stroke for men, Brendan Barker returned the best score of 76 Gross and another local member

Barry Hughes carded the best nett round of 68. The pair used their local knowledge of the course to great effect. In the grade stakes it was another local, David Reeves Grade who won the 'A' grade. Well known former resident Jim Grassick (City GC) took out the 'B' grade title while Ivan Juriss was successful in 'C' grade. The Nett winners were Casey Leotta 'A' grade, Lyle Bryant 'B' grade and Gordon Fletcher (Tenterfield GC) 'C' grade. In the ladies Stableford event the overall winner was Inglewood GC visitor Carmel Owen with a good score of 39 points. Three local ladies were flying the flag for the local club. Lyn Ludlow taking the prize in Division One with 38 points. Division Two went to Margie Locke with 37 points. Shannen McLellan was delighted with her score of 33 points which was good enough to win Division three. Stanthorpe's Rachael Hendry finished runner up in Division one; Debra Armstrong (Millmerran GC) Division two and Yvonne Hall (Caboolture GC) runner up Division three. Saturday's 4BBB Medley Stableford set the tempo for a great weekend of golf. Visitors Stan Stewart and Les Ison streeted the field when they returned a great score of 47 points. At the end of play there was a four point buffer between them and the remainder of the field. Three teams finished the round on 43 points and after a lengthy count back the team of James Haining (Kooralbyn Valley) and William Lathrope were declared runners up. Kay Webb and Bill Pyne combined in the mixed team event to return a winning score of 47 points well ahead of runners up Ian Harvey and Madeline Jarman (42 points). The club would like to acknowledge the sponsors of the carnival. Maddies Gift Gallery continues its long association with the club, particularly in the Open event. Travis Burton played in the event and then spoke after event before presenting the

City Golf Club sponsor the Open Day in many of the smaller clubs in the Darling Downs region, including Stanthorpe, and thanks to Danny Carroll and others from City GC for making the trip to play on the day. Jim Grassick did the honours on behalf Danny Carroll. The Tenterfield Golf Club must also be mentioned for their part in sponsoring the Open. Of course events like the Open weekend would not be successful without the assistance of a band of volunteers who ensure the weekend runs smoothly; the BBQ is cranking and the bar is stocked. Then there are those who assisted in the preparation of the course, prepared and collated the cards. It was no mean feat to get the field away on both days and organise the prize winners. The efforts of greenkeeper, Bill Pyne, must not be underestimated. Somehow Bill presented an excellent course despite the extreme conditions and shortage of water. Congratulations to all - it was an exceptional weekend. SPRING CLASSIC After round three of the Spring Tanny classic which saw 30 players rolling up for the points, it was Maddy Grayson holding the lead on 11 points. On a congested leader board Jacko Grayson was snapping at his heels with 10 points. There is a pack following on nine points all hungry for the lead. Damo, Brosso, Lochy Boal and Stu Hoffman just waiting for their chance to bring down the leaders. Benny Gross and Wayno (8 points) and Fraser, Pricey & Mick Weier (7 points) are not out of the hunt either. The competition on the greens is fierce but the Friday night pool comp saw Stu that ole pool shark stitch up the field. There are plots afoot to keep him from getting to the club Friday nights but he has vowed to continue to give the also-rans a lesson in pool even if his wheels are sabotaged. freetimes.com.au

Part-owner of the Stanthorpe Cup winner Stuart Pickering accepts the winner's trophy from Jockey Club president Chips Briunckhorst and sponsors Melissa and Bill Kerr of K & A Building. MEDAL OF MEDALLISTS TO BE DECIDED With the Stanthorpe Open weekend done and dusted local golfers now turn their attention to this weekend's competition. The Poole's Produce Golf Day sponsored by Howard and Adele Poole. Players will be playing a single stroke event for the November monthly medal and putting competition. This will be the first medal day for the new season and will be played in conjunction with the Medal of Medallists. The field for the Medal of Medallist event is made up of the winners of the medal events held over the past 12 months. The men will be playing for the Roy Carnell trophy while the ladies event is sponsored by Tom and Trish Fittock. Tee off is from 11.30 am and there is a time sheet is on the board at the Clubhouse. TANNY TRIPLES The Tannymorel Bowls club recently combined the Col Wayne and Russ Thompson Memorial day with the Tanny Triples. It was by all accounts another great day on the greens and there was even a little bit of rain which although not much had many dancing in the rain not on the plain - on the greens. The lucky winners were Steve Tyter, Marg Wright and Pedro Collis. The team finishing in the runners up spot was Paintbrush Davidson, Geoff Davis and Johno Johnstone. Thanks to the Thomo

family for their sponsorship of the day it is appreciated by the club as were the efforts of those in the kitchen and the boys who turned the green out in fine fashion. ANOTHER WEEK ANOTHER CUP Another week and another Country Cup was decided on the Southern Downs. On Cox Plate Day all roads for racing folk led to the Clifton race course for the Annual Clifton Cup. A good crowd were treated to beautiful weather, great country hospitality and good racing. The highlight of the five race card was the running of the Pacific Seeds/Pursehouse Rural Clifton Cup over the 1580 metre journey. Ritchford found the journey and track more to his liking than the Stanthorpe Cup the previous week and in a tight finish edged out Rather Salubrious ($11) and Gud Onya ($11). The seven year old who lumped top weight in the Cup is owned and trained in Toowoomba by Jackie Crompton and was well ridden by claiming apprentice Sophie Wilcock. It was advantage bookmakers after the Cup with the favourite De Bandit Vega, a winner in Stanthorpe at his previous start finishing fourth. Oakey visitor Backup Billy opened the meeting with a win for his connections in the Emerald Grains Class B Handicap. In a wide open betting race, the well travelled

CASEY O’CONNOR

gelding who last raced in Tara started at $5.50 and narrowly defeated the favourite Alotafox ($4.60) and Run The Cutter ($6). Trained by John Byrne the winner was well ridden by Toowoomba based jockey Kenji Yoshida. Texas trainer Rod Hilton led in the second winner New Alliance for the Clifford family in the PB Agrifood Benchmark 65 Handicap. It was the Swift Alliance gelding's third win over the 1000 metre journey. Ridden by Bea-Dene Appo and starting at $6 the gelding lumped top weight of 60.5kgs to a narrow win over chocolate Oreo who showed good form in Stanthorpe and Go Get Sum. In another blow for punter the favourite Mellore finished well down the track. Spezia Lady ($5.50) improved on two recent seconds to break her maiden in the next race the Ray Bunch Maiden Handicap. Another Oakey visitor the mare is trained by Brad Hudson for a large syndicate of owners and obviously appreciated the claim for apprentice Simone Vella. The Rex Lipp trained favourite Vienna Spirit finished second. A field of nine runners lined up for the final event on Cup Day, the Landmark Harcourt's Cooke/ Felton Produce maiden.) Gallopinakis a five year old by Melbourne Cup winning sire Americain was having his first start since June 2018. It was also the gelding's first start since transferring to the stable of Toowoomba trainer Rex Lipp. Starting at $5 and despite beginning awkwardly he put paid to favourite Simderealla ($3.50) and won by a clear margin. The Clifton meeting marks the end of the Southern Downs Country Racing Cups for 2019. The good fields and good crowds the meetings at Warwick Stanthorpe and Clifton attracted highlights not only the growing popularity of the Country race meetings but the outstanding work of the committees of all three clubs. Well done to all concerned. Race enthusiast can now turn their attentions to the Melbourne Cup carnival and also Tuesday's Cup Day meeting at Clifford Park Toowoomba. CRICKET FINALLY UNDERWAY After a first round washout the 2019/20 Stanthorpe Cricket season finally got under way last weekend. Valleys took on South's in a Friday night game at the CF White Oval. Valleys then travelled to Shirley Park taking on Tenterfield on their home patch. Back at headquarters RSL went head to head with Wanderers. The defending premiers, Valleys have been bolstered by the return of Charlie Moncada and Alastair Middleton. On Friday night Valleys won the toss and elected ash South's to bat first. It was a good move as the strong Valleys bowling attack restricted South's to just 112 runs. South's openers, Harry Williams and Sachepal Singh made a reasonable start before Williams was dismissed by Martin with the score at 1/33. Singh became Moncada's first victim out for 12. Liam

Lanza was the next to fall run out by Dave Marino. When captain Ben Staley was caught by Moncada off the bowling of Cameron Crestani the writing was on the wall for South's. Tom Bonner (35) top scored as wickets tumbled around him. South's eventually all out in just the 28th over. Steve Martin, Charlie Moncada and Dave Marino each took two wickets and in a good fielding display catches were held and there were two run outs. Valleys never looked under pressure as they reeled in the required runs in the 24th over for the loss of five wickets. Moncada made a classy debut taking two wickets and two catches. Middleton looked in good touch at the wicket opening the batting and top scoring with 27. Cameron Crestani was the next best of the Valley's batsmen scoring 26 from 33 deliveries. Valleys followed up that win by handing Tenterfield a hiding on their home turf. Cameron Crestani lit up Shirley Park with an awesome batting display. Crestani came in at first drop with the score at 1/28 and went about destroying the bowling attack. When he was finally dismissed in the 32nd over the score was 4/220. Crestani scoring 141 runs off just 95 balls. Valleys went on to a total of 258. In reply Tenterfield simply had no answers to the Valleys attack. Steve Martin dismantled the batting line up taking five wickets from eight overs. Anthony Marino took three wickets and Cameron Crestani backed up a good day taking two wickets. Tenterfield were dismissed for just 62 in the 16th over. It was an innings Tenterfield will not care to remember with a top score of 25 from opener Nick Savins. Extras adding the next best score of 10 and the innings included six ducks. Ouch. But an impressive start to the season for Valleys. EXPERIENCE AND YOUTH ON DISPLAY IN THRILLER RSL and Wanderers went head to head on the CF White Oval in a thriller. Wanderers won the toss and batted first setting RSL a run chase of 194. Jamie Carnell remained not out and was the mainstay of the innings scoring 78 from 91 deliveries. Sam Dowie had a hand in three dismissals while one of the younger brigade Noah Mackenzie took two wickets. In reply RSL lost their first wicket with the score at only 16 when youngster Rohan Hines took his first wicket in the senior ranks. However it was a patient and well constructed innings from Sam Dowie that saw RSL snatch a one run win. He was well supported in his innings by a raft of young players who have stepped up into the senior ranks this season. There was drama right to the last ball of the innings as an attempted run out went awry handing the batting side a one run victory. Organisers will be hoping that after the delayed start, it will be plain sailing as the 2019/20 season continues. In the next round Wanderers play Tenterfield and RSL go head to head with South's.
