Message from the Premier & Minister to respond. These Victorians do an incredible job in keeping our state safe.

But they can’t do it alone. We all have a responsibility to plan and prepare for ire. The Hon Daniel Andrews MP

The Hon Lisa Neville MP

Premier of Victoria

Minister for Police and Emergency Services

Our emergency services are ready for a long, hot and dry ire season.

Whether you’re in the bush, near the beach, close to grassland or paddocks, you need to prepare now.

A record leet of 50 aircraft and thousands of volunteers and career ireighters are ready

There are some simple steps you can take straight away to stay safe this ire season.

Make a ire plan and know your trigger to enact it. Talk to your loved ones and make sure they know the plan too. Know where you’ll get your emergency information from and have your emergency kit ready to go. And for more information on how to prepare, visit vic.gov.au/knowire. Taking the right steps now could make all the difference.

Prepare early for survival. Danger lies in the healthy grass growth fed by spring rains, says CFA Assistant Chief Oficer for the South East Region Trevor Owen. The lush, tall grasslands are expected to quickly dry out to a ire hazard within a few weeks, Mr Owen said. Residents hit by the devastating Bunyip State Park ires in March will be particularly nervous. The fuel loads remain high in surrounding forest at Maryknoll, Garield and Bunyip. Even in suburban areas, parks and reserves carry high fuel loads of trees, shrubs and grass. “Being prepared” is again the

key advice. Preparation, such as cutting back shrubs and trees to allow clear gate access for ire trucks, needs to happen now, not on the day of the ire. Also remember

“What’s more important is your life.” to remove mulch from around the base of homes, maintain sprinklers and water pumps in working order, get appropriate hoses and remove leaves from roof gutters. Don’t expect ireys to save your property - especially in a high

ire-risk area on a severely hot day, Mr Owen says. “You can’t expect ireighters and volunteers to put themselves in danger to protect a property that they are unlikely to save anyway. “Last season, people’s assumptions were that we would. “People need to accept responsibility and do what they can to protect themselves, not assume that a ire truck will be there.” As hard as it is, Mr Owen says the best decision may be to leave earlier in the day and to accept your property might be destroyed.

Facts you may not know about fire Conditions in Victoria make it one of the most bushire-prone regions in the world, along with California and Spain. Just two weeks of hot, dry and windy weather creates potentially disastrous bushire conditions that normal Victorian homes are not equipped to survive. At 1100°C, radiant heat from bushires can kill from up to 300 metres away and cause trees to combust without touching them.

Fires can travel at 25km/h, making them impossible to outrun. A change in wind direction can alter their trajectory in seconds and they move twice as fast uphill on a slope of just 10 degrees. Burning embers can spread bushires up to 40km ahead of the ire front, starting dangerous new spot ires in seconds. Rural grassires can be just as dangerous as bushires, travelling faster and starting earlier due to grass drying out more quickly.

14 years a stray By Brendan Rees

Rhoni reunites with her long-lost cat Pussette and Lauren and Amber of the Lost Dogs' Home in Cranbourne West where she was handed in. 200631 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Ms Halliwell says she has no idea where Pussette has been all these years but was making the most of their lost time together. "She's all over me like a rat," she said. "She always used to head butt and the first

thing she said when I opened the cage ... she just leaned out and head butted me". Allison Brown of the Lost Dogs' Home in Cranbourne West said she was stunned by the 14-year mystery but reiterated the importance of microchipping a pet.

"Only five per cent of cats are microchipped so our staff have a super hard time tracking down original owners," she said. "Pussette is in sensational condition for a cat of her age".

A moggy cat that disappeared 14 years ago from its Hampton Park home has been returned to its loving family. The cat, named Pussette, wandered off from her home when she was only one-anda-half-years-old. Owner Rhoni Halliwell was heartbroken and despite her best efforts her cat could not be found. "My daughter had posters up and everything," Ms Halliwell recalled. "We went away for the weekend and cat was supposed to be fed by someone near us and didn't get fed so she disappeared". Now, the adventurous cat has returned home after being found crawling in a gutter along Cairns Road - only one street away from the owner's home at the time. Pussette was taken to the vet at the Lost Dogs' Home in Cranbourne West after being handed in by a Good Samaritan, where her microchip was scanned and registered to Ms Halliwell. "Fourteen years later I moved to Mt Eliza and I got a calling saying 'Oh just ringing you to say we've got Pussette'," Ms Halliwell said. "They said: 'It's definitely her, she's got a microchip on her' so as you could imagine I was pretty surprised and genuinely happy. "I went down there and as soon as I saw her she just responded to me straight away. "She's great apart from being a little bit blind, other than that she is at home," Ms Halliwell said. "She has not changed. She's got no grey hair and I've got lots". About six months after her beloved cat went missing, a vet clinic called Ms Halliwell saying they believed they had found her cat but with severe injuries - however her identity couldn't be confirmed as there was no microchip. "They said: 'It's got no quality of life now', couldn't walk or anything like that so cat to be put down," she said. "I cried for weeks thinking I had put my cat down".

THE LOWDOWN Q&A

With bugler Mitchell Stewart of Narre Warren and member of the Ferntree Gully Salvation Army

When did you learn to play the bugle and what got you interested? I started playing the bugle in 2001 and the thing that got me interested was listening to the last post being played and seeing the images and veterans talking about mates and events that hit them at the time of the bugle being played.

THREE … walking trails in Casey

1

The Hallam Valley Trail is a picturesque cycling and walking track that winds through the Hallam Creek Valley, taking in many Casey landmarks. It's also perfect for bird watchers who might spy a variety of feathered fauna. The circuit is 10km long and flat concrete, good for all abilities. Main parking areas are at KM Reedy Reserve and Sweeney Reserve, and while the trail can be accessed at any point, main entrances are on Hallam Road, Shrives Road and Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road.

2

Lysterfield Park offers many paths for cyclists and walkers. Cyclists should pay attention to signs that indicate where a path is for walking only. There is a network of gravel bush tracks that are well-loved by runners too. Look out for some of the bouncy locals, kangaroos and wallabies!

3

Hilltop Nature Reserve in Cranbourne North is a good place for a stroll with the family. This trail is a little shorter than others but offers good views and is close to open areas for the kids to stop and play. Visitors have spotted wallabies, echidnas and snakes in the past, so keep an eye out!

How honourable do you feel to be invited each year at the Cranbourne cenotaph to sound the Last Post at Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services? For me Anzac Day and Remembrance day is about remembering how much we have to thank our returned wounded and killed veterans but also these days are both about reflection and honour respect mateship and loyalty these men and women took to the battlefields and peace keeping operations as it says in the bible: "No greater love has no man than to lay down his life for his brothers or sisters". What made you decide to join the Salvation Army in Ferntree Gully and what opportunities has this provided? I decided to be at Ferntree Gully Corp because it has a brass band and the opportunity it has provided me with is being able to give back to the community and also play the bugle for all of us to remember what the valiant men did for our freedom. What is your full-time job? I'm a carer for my dad after he got bowel cancer in February of 2018. He has the same fighting attitude as a veteran as his dad fought on Ambon and escaped but we pray dad will keep fighting and showing other cancer sufferers that there is hope. What's your favourite holiday spot in Australia? My favourite holiday spot in Australia is Walhalla as I also volunteer up there as a guard on

the train it is so beautiful and peaceful. What is your favourite book? My favourite book is squadron 303 which is about the polish squadron during the Battle of Britain. At school I ... I was part of the rock band as they needed a horn player I really enjoyed those days. What's something people don't know about you? What people don't know about me is I have been in foster care, had families abuse me and

threaten to do harm to me but I am a survivor. Also if anyone is in that situation there is help and support out there. If you were PM for a day, what would you do? If I was PM for a day I would try to help all the veterans to get housing and the support that they need as we should show them the respect and honour they are sincerely overdue for. Best concert/live show/performance you have attended? Best live show I have ever been to is the stage production of the Lion King the way the animals come to life and the music it's amazing.

You’ll see our people working in the Narre Warren and Beaconsield area over the next few months. There may be some disruption to trafic, and possibly to power supply, while we test the technology and upgrade the power lines. This new technology is being rolled out across communities most at risk of bushires. In some areas, it will be operational in time for summer. While AusNet Services and the Victorian Government believe this new technology will make a real difference in reducing the risk of bushires from powerlines, it does not eliminate all risk. It’s important to ensure your Bushire Plan is up to date. For updates on our progress, follow AusNet Services on Facebook.

IN BRIEF Gym junkie

Council says ‘no’

Police were called to a 24-hour Pakenham gym after hearing reports of an unconscious man found on a leg press machine about 5.30am on Monday 11 November. The 21-year-old man was found in possession of a small quantity of meth and a larger quantity of cannabis, as well as prescription medication. The Cranbourne West man was charged in relation to trafficking cannabis and in possession of drugs of dependence.

By Brendan Rees Casey Council has rejected an application to open a mixed-use building consisting of a cafe, food and drink premises, medical centre and dwellings in High Street, Berwick. The plans from Morgan Development Group Pty Ltd proposed to build a three-storey mixed-use building in addition to five townhouses at 126 and 128 High Street. The 12-metre high proposal also included a basement for services, plant room and storage for the dwellings, as well as 20 car spaces - within 200 metres of Berwick Village. But council officers argued the plans presented a "visually dominant and unsympathetic built form," and was located inappropriately outside of the Berwick Major Activity Centre which did not "respectively consider the surrounding existing and future residential area". At their 7 November meeting, councillors voted to issue a notice of a decision to grant a permit for development on the grounds it did not "add value to the residential character of the area". Casey manager of statutory planning and building services Duncan Turner said the decision to refuse the application was based on an assessment against the requirements of the Casey Planning Scheme and consideration of all written objections. "Council determined that the proposed development would be visually dominant, unsympathetic to the neighbourhood, would adversely impact on the amenity of the area, and was contrary to the requirements of the Casey Planning Scheme," he said. "While there is importance in creating a 'jobrich urban environment', the proposal is located in an established residential area outside of Berwick Village," a council document stated.

Children charged following armed robbery Police have arrested a boy and girl, both aged 17, following an armed robbery and assault in Hampton Park last week. Investigators have been told the 22-yearold male victim was approached by a group of thugs in Hallam Road last Friday morning on 8 November. It's alleged the group demanded the victim's wallet and phone. The victim refused and was assaulted, suffering non-life-threatening injuries. A male teenager has been remanded in custody charged with armed robbery, assault and car theft. The female teenager has been charged with car theft and granted bail. Both will appear before the Children's Court. Police are searching for two other youths in relation to the incident. Investigators are appealing for anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

An artist's impression of the proposed mixed-use building. According to the document, council believed it was important to protect the site's distinctive "canopy tree character, sense of openness and dominance of the landscape setting". Council, however, did support the component of five townhouses but "the proposal is considered to not achieve the applicable objectives in order to strengthen this green treed image and 'special character'". Council's Waste and Recycling Department also do not support the proposal whereby an amended waste management plan would have been required "given the location of the waste collection bay as a shared bay for visitor parking".

Driver hospitalised One person was taken to hospital following a two vehicle collision in Narre Warren on Friday 8 November. The collision occurred on the Princes Highway at about 5.50am. One person was taken to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition. A Victoria Police spokesperson said there were no serious injuries and both drivers have spoken with police. Police are investigating. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

The development was proposed for 126 and 128 High Street, Berwick.

Garage goes up in flames, two cars burnt By Brendan Rees

Fire has destroyed a garage at a home in Narre Warren. Emergency crews were called to the home on Loxley Boulevard about 5.15am on Wednesday 23 October following reports of an explosion being heard. Fire crews from Narre Warren and Berwick brigades found the garage well alight when they arrived. Sixteen firefighters worked hard to stop the fire from spreading to the home and neighbouring properties. The blaze was brought under control about 7.10am with the help of five fire appliances. Jayden Keen, a firefighter with Narre Warren CFA brigade said the two occupants of the home had evacuated. "When we got there we could see the back of the garage going so we made entry to the house," he said. He said firefighters made an "aggressive attack" to stop the fire from spreading.

Police release image of suspected attacker

Two cars were burnt in the fire. The garage along with two cars - with the makes unknown - was destroyed. A breathing apparatus appliance from Bay-

swater also helped firefighters at the scene. Police say the fire is not being treated as suspicious.

Police have released a face-fit image of a male in the hope of solving an indecent assault that occurred in Narre Warren South. Police say a female was jogging at the Berwick Springs Lake when a male on a green mountain bike approached her from behind on 30 October. It's alleged he indecently assaulted her before riding away leaving the victim injured and shaken. Police are urging anyone who frequents the Berwick Springs Lake area to keep a lookout for anyone that matches the description of the male image. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, make a report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com. au and quote the incident number 190394063.

Taking a tiger by the tail By Brendan Rees A deadly snake has been caught in the front yard of Cranbourne South property before being safely released. Barry Goldsmith from Snake Catcher Victoria said he was called out to the property after the owner spotted the critter slithering in the garden on Wednesday 6 November. "It was just hiding, when I rustled it, it came flying out so that was good; textbook capture," he said. Video of the capture was posted to Mr Goldsmith's Snake Catcher Victoria Facebook page. The caption read: "Here's a feisty Cranbourne tiger snake. Nice early morning heart starter." At one stage Mr Goldsmith used his hand to lift a shrub in an attempt to the find the snake before it spilled out onto a nearby path. "I was holding it by the tail, that's the only time a snake's dangerous when you're interacting with it," he said. "Any other time they're not going to jump out of the grass and bite ya, he just wants to be left alone. "I let him loose on some private property". Mr Goldsmith, who has been catching snakes for 40 years, says he's had about 30 callouts to snakes in the South East area for the past six months. His recent catch, he said, was "another day in the office". When asked where he finds snakes, Mr Goldsmith said "Where don't I find them? Everywhere". "Inside the house, toilets, walls, underneath fridges, underneath Christmas trees ... washing machines, chicken coups. "There is no increase in snakes this year as oppose to any other year," he said. The warmer spring days spark the start of snake season with the most common snakes around Melbourne being tiger snakes

New book is an inspiring sister act and right royal read By Brendan Rees Two Casey sisters are excited to discuss their first published book about a great Sri Lankan king when they visit Bunjil Place Library this month. Amenda, 20, and Emerald, 19 - both of Sri Lankan heritage - took two-and-half years to write their book, 'The Uprising', which follows the epic tale of King Gemunu, the ruler of Sri Lanka from 161-137 BC who led with "so much intensity and passion". "The novel also talks about the battle which took place, which King Gemunu had instigated in order to unify Sri Lanka, which was probably the most fun part for us to write," Amenda says. They say they were inspired by the stories their parents used to share with them as children. "My sister and I would often discuss about

the different exotic and exciting stories our parents taught us about Sri Lanka and the various kings that ruled the country," Amenda says. The pair of Hampton Park say they had felt so lucky to have been brought up in Australia, and a chance to "live our lives to the fullest," that they wanted to help those less fortunate. They hope through the sales of the book they can raise enough money to help children in remote villages in Sri Lanka to assist with their education - "so that they too can have an opportunity to explore their dreams and pursue them". "The book we have written is completely self-published and all costs involving it have been funded by us," they say. There was no target audience in mind as they "wanted everyone to be able to just pick up the book and read it". "We live in a very multicultural society, so

being aware and gaining knowledge about a certain community cultural roots truly helps communities to be more understanding and loving of one another and that's also something we really hope to achieve through this book". Amenda, a former Dandenong High School student is studying a Bachelor of Law/Arts at Deakin University, while Emerald, a former Canterbury Girls Secondary College student is currently studying a Bachelor of Health Sciences at Monash University. Their talented father, Kuma Perera, drew the illustrations for their book which contains 155 pages. "He truly assisted us in making sure that the words were brought to life through his drawings," Amenda says. They will officially launch their new book at Bunjil Place Library on Friday 15 November from 5.30pm- 7.30pm. Free entry.

Saving avenue of honour Casey Council is planning a staged tree renewal program along the Berwick-Beaconsfield Avenue of Honour to ensure the longevity of this living memorial. Several trees that form the Avenue of Honour, which links the townships of Berwick and Beaconsfield, are in poor or declining condition. A proactive removal and replacement program is required to protect the Avenue. Edrington Ward Councillor Timothy Jackson said council has been proactive in their tree management and planned for the renewal of the Avenue of Honour over the past few years. He said council's proactive approach to the renewal program started in 2015 when some cuttings were taken from the original Avenue trees and propagated by a specialised nursery "so we had replacement trees of the same genus and species ready to plant if needed". "These cuttings are now established and have grown to over two metres in height, ready to replace the trees in declining condition. "The Berwick RSL has acknowledged their support for Council undertaking this project and ensuring the long-term conservation of this living memorial." Two men arrested in homicide raids Police have arrested two men as part of an eight-month investigation into the shooting murder of Mitat Rasimi in Dandenong. Taskforce Sector detectives arrested the 26-year-old from Hallam and the 25-year-old from Hampton Park as part of eight house raids on the morning of Thursday 7 November. The pair were to be interviewed by police. The raids took place at two residences in Endeavour Hills as well as dwellings in Hampton Park, Hallam, Dandenong, Deer Park, Seaford and Narre Warren South from 5am. Police from the Homicide Squad, the antioutlaw motorcycle gang Echo Taskforce, the Special Operations Group, Dog Squad as well as Australian Federal Police members were involved. Mr Rasimi, 51, was fatally shot in a car outside his home in Dawn Avenue on the evening

of Sunday 3 March. The father-of-four, with reported underworld links, was found dead in his car which rolled forward and crashed into a pole. In an effort to crack the case in recent weeks, police publicly released footage of an orange Ford Ranger ute and a man walking to and from the vehicle. The ute had been found at McMahens Road in Bangholme 30 minutes after the shooting. A man was believed to have attempted to set the ute alight before being disturbed by a witness. Taskforce Sector was formed this year to investigate links between several fatal shootings including the killing of two people outside a Prahran nightclub in April. In my opinion,Casey council needs to change and one way to achieve change would be for the Victorian Electoral Commission to change Casey Council from its current multicouncillor, subdivided model, with 11 councillors and six wards, to an unsubdivided model with fewer councilors and no artificial ward boundaries. This would offer many advantages including substantial savings on councillors’ annual allowances and their large (and often unnecessary) travel allowances claimed by some councilors who state they are interested in local affairs, but spend thousands of dollars of ratepayers' money on overseas travel. An unsubdivided representational Casey

Council will provide residents with the opportunity to vote for all their councillors at election time. It will maintain the principle of one vote one value and help discourage “dummy" candidates from standing by NOT giving power over election outcomes to dodgy preference dealers. The Victorian Electoral Commission should give more power to voters, under any revised municipal model, by only requiring voters to vote for their preferred candidates, in proportion to the new number of councillor vacancies, instead of voters being required to compulsorily vote for, and preference, every single candidate named on their ballot paper. A unsubdivided representational Casey model will also have the advantage of maintaining equal weight for all votes and preventing any malapportionate that can happen under multi-ward council models. Here is how two readers responded online: Louise Healy: Now the courts need to deal with them and hopefully put them away. Kay Bbk: Charge them as adults On 12 November a story was shared to the Berwick Star News Facebook page about Casey Council's plans to develop a Casey Coastal Trail which would link up the coastal villages of Blind Bight, Pearcedale and Tooradin. Here is what readers thought about the proposal online: Dieter Koch: Sounds like a great idea. Cycling friendly trails would be great too... maybe one day it could join up with the rail trail to Wonthaggi? Robyn Disher: Thought of that since we moved to Tooradin 13 years ago. Grower jailed

A positive Outlook

By Jessica Anstice

By Brendan Rees Victorian MPs visited two government projects in Hampton Park on Thursday 7 November which has helped create jobs and skills for the disadvantaged. Assistant Treasurer Robin Scott joined Member for Cranbourne Pauline Richards and Member for Narre Warren South Gary Maas at the Hampton Park resource recovery centre which is operated by Outlook Environmental. Outlook Environmental is working in partnership with the State Government since the Social Procurement Framework was launched in April 2018, helping disadvantaged Victorians benefit from Victoria's Big Build. Outlook Environmental manage and recycle construction waste material from some of the state's major infrastructure projects, including level crossing removals and the Metro Tunnel Project. The MPs also visited the Evans Road level crossing where Outlook Environmental employees collect the waste and takes it to their recovery centre - where the company recycles about 90 per cent of construction materials, such as concrete, plastic, timber sleepers and metals. More than 70 per cent of Outlook Environmental staff are people with disability or from a marginalised background. Since signing their first Labor Government contract in 2017, they have created an additional 30 new jobs, increasing the number of staff to about 150 employees. Assistant Treasurer Robin Scott said it was the State Government's aim to benefit as many Victorians as possible through their projects "that's why we consider the social or environmental possibilities with every purchase we make." "The Framework is delivering meaningful change to people's lives while getting on with

building the infrastructure projects that Victorians need," he said. Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards commended Outlook Environmental for their work, saying they made a "real difference and it's wonderful that we've been able to support them as a government".

Narre Warren South Gary Maas said the Framework recognised the critical role small to medium size enterprises play in our community. "Outlook Environmental is not only providing Victorians with employment but doing good for the environment as well," he said.

A man who has been jailed after police seized over 140 cannabis plants in his Berwick home claims he was supplying medical marijuana. Police executed a search warrant at Robin McGillien's Tennyson Close home on 18 July last year when they discovered an "elaborate hydroponic setup" located at the rear of the house, encompassing six rooms. In an interview with police, the 63-year-old stated his motivation behind the operation was to "help people with medical issues" and that it was not for profit. Mr McGillien told police he only sold the weed to cover establishment costs - the rest was used for personal medical purposes with some given away to friends. During the search, not only did police locate two firecrackers in a filing cabinet drawer, they also discovered that the crop house was powered by an illegal electrical bypass. With no prior criminal history, Mr McGillien said he paid someone $8000 to install the electrical bypass, resulting in the overall setup costing him between $22,000 and $25,000. The "sophisticated" setup included carbon filters, exhaust fans, water pumps for irrigation and timing devices. County Court Judge Irene Lawson said the offending was "well planned and executed". "Having regard to the sophisticated nature of the setup and its extent ... I consider that this was a commercial operation," she said. "Whilst accepting that you were altruistic with respect to your intended distribution of the cannabis oil, nonetheless, there was a degree of commerciality to your venture and this is not the case of spontaneous offending." Mr McGillien was sentenced to two years and three months' prison with a non-parole period of nine months. In respect to the theft of electricity, Mr McGillien will compensate Energy Australia in excess of $7000.

In a poetic twist, Brenden Horn is now teaching English at the school where he was once a student himself.

Poetic twist By Danielle Kutchel When Brenden Horn finished school at Narre Warren South P-12 College in 2012, he didn't anticipate that he would be back teaching in the very classrooms that he sat in, just seven years later. That said, teaching had been on his radar to some degree, as a "one day" thing. He received consistent reminders from the assistant principal at his former school, asking him if he'd taken up a Dip-ed yet. But straight out of Year 12 Mr Horn found himself pursuing a career in a start-up business instead. However, it wasn't long before he found himself no longer enjoying that role as much as he once had, and teaching began to look like a more attractive path. Taking up a spot on the Teach for Australia program, Mr Horn was able to jump straight into the classroom while studying an education degree. Not long into the program, he received the usual message from his former assistant principal: "are you a teacher yet?" "This time, I got to say 'kind of!'" Mr Horn laughed. Teach for Australia places its teachers, known as associates, into low-socioeconomic schools. Narre Warren South P-12 fit the criteria and it wasn't long before Mr Horn was back walking the school's corridors, this time as a teacher.

He now teaches English to senior students at the college while also working alongside some of the teachers who taught him. And far from being awkward, he said the pre-existing relationships helped him settled into the job a little easier. "The head of VCE at the moment was my Year 10 English teacher and my Year 11 English teacher is now the head of middle years," Mr Horn says. "It's great to work with some of the people who shaped my education. "It was quite easy to jump into the team and get integrated. Any job is difficult but it was easier already knowing those people." The best part of the job though is the "cheeky" students. "I enjoy working with the kids and seeing everyone improve in a collective way. Schools are unique places for that to happen," he explained. "Sometimes the age group between the students I teach and myself is smaller than with the other teachers I work with. The kids remind me of myself sometimes. "Even little things like language, handshakes, the jokes, are still going on today. It's definitely easy to get blasted into the past a little bit." Ultimately, he said it's poetic to now be teaching in the same place he once learned in himself. "I'm really stoked to be back at my old school," Mr Horn said.

Town longs for coast walk By Brendan Rees Tooradin residents have backed a proposal to build a walking trail that would encompass the picturesque Mangrove region of Western Port Bay and potentially attract "busloads of tourists". In a big push to promote tourism, Casey Council's has plans for a 'Casey Coastal Trail' which would link up the coastal villages of Blind Bight, Pearcedale and Tooradin. Under the plan, the trail would allow visitors to wander the flooded mangrove forest, tidal salt marshes, and seagrass channels and include a lookout with scenic views across Western Port Bay. It would also feature information boards, bird viewing boxes and/or seats. Councillor Geoff Ablett put forward a motion in October to include the Casey Coastal Trail into council's Draft Walk and Ride Strategy 2019-41 with a feasibility study also to be undertaken - however this would be subject to funding in the 2020-21 council budget. "Most of it would be a gravel path but there would be a huge board walk out over the mangroves and make Tooradin a real tourist attraction that it is," Cr Ablett said, adding "I'm pretty confident the feasibility will be very positive". He said the project was the "number one item" the people of Tooradin wanted in their town plan "which we're about to start working on". Cr Ablett said the study would also need to consider the "complexities" of land ownership - which is currently shared by Melbourne Water, Parks Victoria, Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning - "to negotiate these types of outcomes". Casey manager of city and asset planning Keri New said the distance of the trail had not been determined but it was "presumed this

Among those calling for a coastal trail to be built in Tooradin is president of foreshore committee Tim Burgess, foreshore committee member Ross Wilkie, recreation reserve committee member Dianne Loft and president of Tooradin Business Association Nicole George at Rutter Park. 200438 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS detail will be one outcome of the study". The Tooradin Business Association's (TBA) president Nicole George said the proposed trail would be a huge win for the community but there was "no commitment, nor advocacy by Council to state government for the delivery of this Coastal trail, in any given time frame". "How many plans have to be written before we get some kind of action?" she said, adding the community hoped the project would begin within three years. "Given that this report is for up to 2041, it can only be inferred that the Coastal trail is at the later end of this time line, and does not in-

corporate Tooradin". "(It would) entice people to get moving on day trip outings to a coastal town where they can walk, run, or ride on an extensive boardwalk." Cr Ablett said at the October meeting: "Hopefully we can advocate for funding to be allocated in the 2021 budget for council to undertake the preparation process for this trail in Tooradin". Tooradin Foreshore Committee president Tim Burgess said the walking trail had been "on the drawing board for a long time".

Mr Burgess said he believed council were behind the project but as to how it would be funded would be "the biggest issue". Rochelle Halstead, business owner at Tides Bar and Grill in Tooradin said the coastal trail was "a fabulous idea". "The board I know has been on the radar for years ... it's just crying out for it," she said, adding it was an "opportunity to showcase the mangroves if it's managed very well." Submissions regarding the Draft Walk and Ride Strategy 2019-41 will come back at a council meeting yet to be announced.

Survivor is face of hope By Brendan Rees In February this year Nat Wenke found a lump on her breast while showering. Not thinking much of it, she texted her husband telling him she would see a doctor that night and not to stress. Three days later the mother of four was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, just two weeks shy of her 43rd birthday. She has fought hard all year and to her relief she given the news she was cancer free on the 25 September. "Your life just changes and I don't think I'll ever get back to normal," Nat says. On 16-17 November, Nat of Carrum Downs will join her family in the annual CranbourneNarre Relay for Life at Casey Fields in Cranbourne East - which raises funds for the Cancer Council of Victoria. So far 19 teams have signed up for the event which has already raised nearly $30,000. Nat's daughter, Hayley Zantuck, started the team 'Wenke's Warriors' to support her mum and will be taking part in the Relay for Life for the first time, celebrating the hope they have for the future. Nat has also been selected as this year's Face of Hope - a person who inspires their team and the community. She will have the honour of reading the Relay for Life Oath at the opening ceremony and also cutting the ribbon. "It's not something you want to have a team for but we are here ... we're going to raise as much as we can and support everybody," Nat says. Nat is currently undergoing radiation ther-

apy to treat due to the cancer spreading to lymph nodes under her arms but doctors have confirmed it "hasn't gone anywhere else". "I'm starting to get tired now, I'm three weeks in ... my bones are starting to fatigue," she says. Nat described her six months of chemo therapy as "horrible" where she often felt sick for the first three months. "The thing I hate about it is the effect it has on your friends and family and me being a mum I try and double everything and do it myself," she says. "I'm always helping but I never ask. I had to reply on other people. I'm very independent and I lost all of that. "You just push on because you have to," she adds. "There has been progress made because 10 years ago I had of got this cancer I would've been a goner. There's a drug called Herceptin that I take and that's the life saver". Details for the Relay for Life: Starts at 4pm Saturday 16 November to 12pm Sunday 17 November. There will also be kids activities, live entertainment and food trucks. The opening ceremony will start at 3.45pm on Saturday with a candle light ceremony at 8.30pm. The closing ceremony will be held at noon on Sunday.

Nat Wenke underwent six months of chemo therapy for breast cancer. She will participate in this year's Cranbourne-Narre Relay for Life at Casey Fields.

Black spots By Brendan Rees Two black spot roads in Endeavour Hills that have contributed to multiple collisions are being upgraded after Casey Council won Federal Government funding. Power Road and Churchill Park Drive were identified as black spots following nine reported injury collisions during a five-year assessment period from 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2017. Casey council received $81,564 564 under the 2019-20 Federal Government Infrastructure Investment Black Spot Program for work carried out on Churchill Park Drive and Power Rd. New vehicle-activated flashing light kangaroo warning signs have been installed to "better highlight to road users the presence of kangaroos in the area". Casey manager of city and asset planning Keri New said of the reported injury collisions, five resulted in serious injuries to the vehicle occupant and four resulted in minor injuries "Eight of the accidents involved collisions with kangaroos, predominantly during the dusk to dawn period," she said. Ms New said the virtual fencing bollards to be installed elsewhere on Churchill Park Drive, are not included as part of the Blackspot project and are being fully funded by council. "The cost of installing the bollards along Churchill Park Drive, which is currently being completed, will be approximately $16,000, funded as part of the existing Minor Traffic budget for 2019-20," she said. "Following comprehensive treatments of former blackspot sites on Casey roads there are no other local road sites currently under consideration as candidate blackspot projects. "Council will therefore not submit any applications to the 2020-21 Federal government Infrastructure Investment Black Spot Pro-

gram," Ms New said. Council considered North Road in Cranbourne South for submission under the Black Spot Program but was advised by VicRoads that the proposal to install a guardrail on both sides of North Road between East Road and Maywood Road "would not address all four crash types on this section of road," according to a council document. This project as therefore been listed for consideration in council's grey sport program. The document also said council currently had 16 black spots and 14 black lengths on council managed roads that were considered as part of the application process. "Of these locations, various improvements have been undertaken in recent years at the majority of current black spot and black length locations using funding approved through previous Federal Government funded programs, including the Black Spot Program, as well as funding via the New and Improved Roads Program in council's Capital Works Program," it said.

Berwick takes a pause By Mitchell Clarke Crowds gathered around the Berwick cenotaph on Monday 11 November to commemorate the end of the First World War and remember those who fought in the line of duty. Berwick RSL president Wayne A’Vard said Remembrance Day was the “second biggest day of the year” for the group and that it was pleasing to see so many turn out to pay their respects. “It’s a time of reflection, to reflect on the sacrifices that all the people made for our country,” Mr A’Vard said. “It’s a very special day. Both Anzac Day and Remembrance Day are very significant to me.” In the last 15-20 years, the Berwick RSL have raised about $2 million, with half the money going towards the welfare of veterans both serving and returned members. “There’s a comradery established when you serve,” Mr A’Vard explained “All those men and women you serve with are like brothers and sisters to you, you look after one another, those bonds you formed through those times, you keep them forever.” Guest speaker Terry Sparks thanked the Berwick branch for asking him to speak. “Remembrance Day is the day when we remember all who served, were wounded or died during all conflicts,” Mr Sparks said. “There are many things we should remember on this day - all who served in any conflict - all who supported the services - and those who were left at home with their loved ones serving away.” Mr Sparks also paid tribute to all the women who joined the auxiliary services and served with great distinction. “These women gave great service to the country and the war effort and helped to keep the country running,” he said. “I believe they should be remembered for what they achieved.” La Trobe MP Jason Wood, Gembrook MP Brad Battin, Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas and City of Casey mayor Susan Serey attended the event to pay their respects. “The reality is today we can come down to Berwick on a beautiful, sunny day and have a coffee and enjoy this space,” Mr Wood said. “When you think back to World War 1, when the guys are in the trenches, it was just hell for them. “We can never forget how we’ve got to make Australia such a wonderful democracy.”

Remembering the fallen Kevin Broomhall remembers being on edge while guarding airfields during the New Guinea conflict in the 60s and 70s. “Over time it was a bit nerving because ... radios went blank, you didn’t know what to do,“ he said. The 77-year-old war veteran was one of about a hundred people who gathered around the Cranbourne cenotaph for Remembrance Day. Under blue skies the crowd paused as a rendition of the Last Post a minute’s silence fell over Greg Clydesdale Square on Monday 11 November at 11am. On the eleventh day of the eleventh month - November- at 11am marks the time World War I officially came to an end in 1918. In his address, Dandenong Cranbourne RSL sub-branch senior-vice president Bill Shepherd paid tribute to the fallen. “Today we remember the service and sacrifice of all men and women who fought for us,” he said. “The loss, the devastation and the tragedy of the First World War remains with us 101 years after it came to an end. “Australia’s sacrifice in 1917 was the greatest our country would ever pay in wartime. More than 76,000 Australians were killed, wounded or missing on the Western Front in 1917”.

Mr Shepherd also spoke of a Belgium born Cyrille Knockaert who immigrated to Australia in 1911 in search of a new life. After just a few weeks of becoming a citizen, he was enlisted in 1915 to fight for his new home. But on 9 August 1918, Cyrille was wounded in the side during the Battle of Amiens. Two days later died aged 23. Community groups, politicians, school children along with members of the public were invited lay wreaths at the ceremy, taking a moment to reflect. Dressed in a navy jacket and cap with rows of medals on his chest, Kevin Broomhall said for him and his wife, Mary, “We don’t glorify war in any form or fashion, what we do is: remember people who may have succumbed to that”. He served with the Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers of the Australian Army for 15 years and was posted to New Guinea. “We were flying the flag for Australia building air strips... it was my prime job to keep the engine running on the aircraft,” he recalled. “Indonesia threatened to take over the whole of New Guinea, Papua, the whole lot they got West New Guinea. The ceremony concluded with a rendition of the national anthems of Australia and New Zealand which was sung by Heather Thorne.

After three premierships in four years, Berwick are enjoying their most successful era. 185297 Picture: ROB CAREW

Berwick’s belter Berwick's intensity from the opening bounce until the final siren simply can't be matched. Their premiership victory against Narre Warren on Saturday - giving the club back-toback flags for just the second time in club history - was intense, finals footy laced with the right amount of class. After a third premiership in four years, the word 'dynasty' is deservingly being bandied around, and for good reason.

The club has a stranglehold over the southeast region - they're relentless, driven by success and are always chasing their next challenge. It's the cornerstone of all successful sporting clubs. While the weather may have been arctic in their 51-point win over Narre Warren, the Wickers put in a magical performance befitting of a champion team in the midst of a golden era. From the superstar Travis Tuck, who came to the club with a high expectation that has

now culminated with a best on ground medal in a grand final, to their champion skipper Madi Andrews, dynamic forward Harry Money, gun midfielder Bryce Rutherford and reliable defenders Jo West and Michael Riseley, the Wickers possess remarkable star power. "We pride ourselves on our relentless approach," Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman said in the aftermath of another premiership win. And as for Kemperman, he couldn't have a dreamt of a start to his senior coaching career

- two premierships in two years. Not only is the former Noble Park champion blessed with an incredible squad, but he's a forward thinker, a modern day coach with an incredible tactical nous. The foundations are set, and as the club embarks on a new era in AFL Outer East, it seems the Wickers show no signs of slowing down. Turn to sport for more about a golden day for the Wickers in the final ever grand final of the South East Football Netball League.

As Mr Nicholls explained, Ian started at the bottom of the company photo copying and helping with admin before moving into sales. He has risen through the ranks and is now a partner in the Offficer business. “Ian is a perfectionist who works hard, who is humble and who is a good listener,“ Mr Nicholls said. “We were estatic when we heard he had gained this ranking.“ Mr Nicholls said the ranking was well deserved and reflected Ian’s dedication to his job.

Drug grower’s ‘kind’ crop By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Cranbourne dad has argued in court that his back-shed cannabis crop was grown to stop his son using ice. Anthony George Buckingham's 43 plants with UV head lamps, fans and watering systems were seized during a raid of his home by police on 2 July, the court heard. Police also seized more than 750 grams of dried cannabis in the shed and house.

After his arrest, Buckingham told police he was willing to sell the drugs to customers. He'd ordered the seeds for his crops from overseas, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard on 12 November. He pleaded guilty to trafficking and cultivation of a drug of dependence. Defence lawyer Esan Pilai argued that Buckingham was mentally impaired at the time. Buckingham's reasoning that the crop

was set up to stop his son using the drug 'ice' showed that he was "not in the right mental state". "He failed to realise the gravity of the situation." The accused's depression and anxiety - as outlined in a psychological report - would be exacerbated in jail, Mr Pilai told the court. Magistrate Steven Raleigh indicated that Buckingham faced possible jail due to the quantities of cannabis.

He said Buckingham's mental health issues didn't constitute mental impairment. His mental health should have been addressed when diagnosed six years ago, Mr Raleigh said. "Everyone who goes to jail is going to be depressed." Buckingham, who had no prior relevant convictions, was sentenced to a two-year community corrections order.

$1k donation for appeal By Brendan Rees The Inner Wheel Club of Cranbourne has presented the 2019 Mayor's Walk for Disability with a $1,000 donation. Casey councillor and former mayor Amanda Stapledon thanked the generosity of the club during a meeting on Monday 11 November. "Thank you so very much to Debbie and an incredible group of women," Cr Stapledon said in her Facebook post. "We heard from District Governor Kate Luxford and her life of service - what an inspiration! "President Debbie chaired a terrific meeting and made everyone feel very welcome," she said. The Inner Wheel Club of Cranbourne, which consists of 31 members, meets on the second Monday of each month at 6.30pm for 7pm at Blue Hills Residences, Cranbourne. Members offer help wherever and whenever help is needed, to each other and at local, national and International level. The Mayor's Walk for Disability raised for than $30,000 after then-mayor Cr Stapledon

walked over 120 kilometres cross the municipality from Narre Warren to Lynbrook, Endeavour Hills and Tooradin in September. The walk raised funds for Project 28, an initiative by the Wolfdene Foundation that will see the construction of supported accommodation units for people in Casey who live with a disability and are still in the care of their ageing parents or carers.

Inner Wheel Club of Cranbourne president Debbie Tully presents a $1000 cheque to Casey councillor Amanda Stapledon.

Students get the gardening bug By Brendan Rees Year 9 students of Berwick's Kambrya College are nearing the completion of transforming a garden space at their school. A group of 20 green-fingered students have been busy putting in drainage, paths, retaining walls and any other features that will support the garden. They also sourced indigenous plants from their local native nursery to complete the project. The school's Year 9 engagement program Darrabi, which sees students participate in community service and learning hands-on skills, received a $4,500 grant thanks to the 2019 Victorian Junior Landcare and Biodiversity Grant, supported by the Victorian Government's Victorian Landcare Program. This grant went towards regenerating a vacant lot next to a Later Years building which opened this year. The school's Darrabi Coordinator Sarah Hemphill said the project was a chance for disengaged students to feel a sense of achievement. "Currently a mud trap and unappealing space, students doing this project will learn about the plants but also real-life skills for landscaping, horticulture, maths, English and design planning," she said. "Students have been working hard on the design process and researching local species to determine which will best suited". As part of the Darrabi program and with the support of a local Landcare group, students have also regenerated a waterway at Akoonah

Rescuer fined By Cam Lucadou-Wells An animal rescuer has pleaded guilty to threatening to post intimate pictures of her ex-partner onto the Internet. The 31-year-old mother, who tends to about 50 injured animals, originally faced a charge of posting an explicit image on her Tinder account - which was emailed as a screenshot to the victim. She threatened to send images to the victim's friends, Dandenong Magistrates' Court was told on 12 November. The victim reported the matter to Narre Warren police, fearing the pictures were published to the community at large. Police told the court that this couldn't be proven - though the image was uploaded to a Tinder account. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted proof was "increasingly difficult", given the offence occurred in July 2018. The accused's emails also were in persistent breach of an intervention order. At the time, her mobile number had been blocked by the ex-partner. Defence lawyer Siva Kandasamy said the accused and victim's four-month relationship descended into acrimony. The accused had been harassed by the complainant and sought an intervention order - but the victim had applied for one first, he told the court. Mr Kandasamy said the accused had had her house broken into as part of the "harassment". Mr Vandersteen said the accused had acted to embarrass and humiliate her ex-partner. "You just can't do this - it doesn't matter what the circumstances are." He noted that since the emails, the woman had been fined $1200 by Melbourne Magistrates' Court for two assaults. Noting her limited income, he convicted and placed her on an 18-month good behaviour bond.

Berwick school best performers

Mr Wood officially opened the new Berwick Central Scout Group Shed at Harkaway Primary School.

Scouts score funding

By Danielle Kutchel A Berwick school's creative take on a favourite fairytale has earned them a national award in the annual Wakakirri performing arts event. Berwick Primary School took out the Primary Challenge Story of the Year award, beating 280 other schools from across the country. Students performed a unique rendition of Jack and the Beanstalk called "Jack and the Giants", which followed Jack into a magical kingdom where friendships blossom and family is found. The school's performance blew away the Wakakirri National Panel, who called it a "cleverly articulate storyline", "with great energy and enthusiasm". The National Panel commended Berwick students on their "teamwork" and "excellent well rounded production". Kelly Cathie, Berwick Primary School's Wakakirri coordinator and choreographer, described the performance as a "fractured fairytale" focused on the theme of friendship being found in the strangest of places. Her students - all 93 of them from grades 3 through to 6 - were excited to get involved and come along to rehearsals. "The kids rehearsed for about two hours every week. They formed their own family and community with each other, making friends with kids they wouldn't normally hang out with." This was the sixth year the school had been involved in Wakakirri, and the third year they made it through to the state finals for Victoria. "We felt satisfied and proud and we were

But the excitement and tension amongst the students on the night built as they waited to hear who had taken out the coveted award. "The room erupted when our name appeared! I'm surprised the windows didn't shatter!" Ms Cathie laughed. The students were presented with their trophy by the national director of Wakakirri in a celebratory whole school assembly on Wednesday 6 November. The production was an original created by Ms Cathie, art teacher MR Brown and art media teacher Mr Carr, who brainstorm performance themes each year. "I love being able to provide an opportunity for kids to participate in something that is their passion," Ms Cathie said.

Federal La Trobe MP Jason Wood welcomed the announcement of $17,000 and $50,000 towards the upgrades of Berwick Central Scouts. Mr Wood officially opened the new Berwick Central Scout Group Shed at Harkaway Primary School. He said the project to upgrade the Berwick Central Scouts was a key priority for him as the local MP because of the significant benefits for the Berwick community. "The funding for this important community project is only possible because of the Morrison Government's plan for a stronger economy" Mr Wood said. Jason Wood said sport played an important role across the Berwick region and the benefits of the Liberal Government investment in the facilities will be felt right across the community. "This funding will help to renovate Scout hall, including work on storage facilities". This funding will also be used for two camping storage trailers. "I'd like to thank the hard working, dedicated and outstanding scout leaders for their role in transforming young lives". "This upgrade would make a real difference to local residents in Berwick who use the sporting ground every week."

Six decades of excellence By Nick Creely

Vice president Michael McMahon is hoping for a big turn out at the club's Hall of Fame Awards Night. 199914 Glenn Marinic, George Cunningham, there’s plenty of them, they’ve just never been recognised. “We’ve got players at our own level that are pretty standout sort of cricketers, Jason Dodd is another that comes to mind, Peter Goodes is another one, just icons of the cricket club that have done a lot over there time. There are others too.” And with the planning of the event, as well as organising who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame and into the various other awards, McMahon urged anyone who’s been associated with the club to jump online and purchase a ticket. “When you do a lot of planning for an event, the one thing you need is the people to come,” he said. “I’d love to put a figure on it, I haven’t had anyone I’ve spoken to say no, and there’s been over 100 invited guests, so you won’t get them all, but hopefully 150 with partners could be there. “That could escalate, and that’s without anyone else within the club or community that wants to come. “We want anyone who’s been involved with the club to come and share a special night, that’s what it’s about for us.” The event will be held at the Cardinia Culture Centre in Pakenham on Saturday 2 May, with tickets $90 each. For tickets, head to Beaconsfield.vic.cricket.com.au If anyone would like any more information, they can contact Michael McMahon on 0448 880 121.

An update of the records at Perc Allison Oval has turned into one of the most anticipated and important events in Beaconsfield Cricket Club history, and the Tigers are urging anyone who has been involved with the club to get on board. The current Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA) club will honour the very best cricketers that have played for the Tigers from 1960 to 2020 with the club’s inaugural Hall of Fame Awards night in May next year, with many of the legendary icons of the club set to be in attendance. It’s all about recognition for the years of dedication some have put into making the club what it is today, and about acknowledging some of the finest cricketers who have graced the field wearing the colours. Michael McMahon, the vice-president of the club and historian, said that a simple updating of key statistics in their history led to a realisation that more needed to be done. “I took over from Kev Rankin in the historians department about seven years ago, and whilst he was in his last year, I started doing the games played for the club, there was nothing,” he said. “It started off with that, and it just grew, and now our website reflects the runs and wickets, centuries, there’s a lot of stuff that which in a way was just bringing us up to speed with a lot of other clubs. “It’s been a long haul, so the way that started was just an innocent thing, and as a result of that, when you’ve got this information, we needed to look at how to use it a little bit better.” And the Tigers are using the information to good use as they sift through the records to come up with many special awards that will be presented at the awards night next year. “I thought there were a lot of people in this club and community that don’t get recognised, they’ve put a lot of work in, and that might mean they’ve put in a certain amount of time but haven’t made it to a life membership,” he said. “Those people still need to be recognised, and there are a lot of them in cricket clubs. We’ve had something like over 900 players play for our club, and that’s only since 1960. “From 1922, when we were established, we’ve got no records, so I’ve got nothing to give, so 60 years is not bad, some clubs are a lot less, some are a lot more. “We’ve never done our team of the decades, we want to do some Silver Jubilee teams, so the best 12 of a 25-year period, our services awards, and also create a Hall of Fame. Everything’s there statistically, so all we need to do now is filter it out and put it together. “I know some clubs in the DDCA have got a Hall of Fame, some have team of the decades, I’m not sure a lot of them have got everything. “We like to pioneer; we like to be one of the clubs that leads from the front, so we thought why not?” McMahon said that the response to the Hall of Fame Awards Night has been extremely positive, with many great names having flowed through the doors of the club over the last 60 years. “Talking to people around the traps, everyone’s pretty responsive to it, they want to see who the best cricketers was of their time, they want to see cricketers from the 1960s come to an event now, they want to talk to them,” he said. “You look around the club, there’s Mark Betheras, Ron Allan, Alan Richards, Brad Miles,

Panthers on the back foot By Tyler Lewis VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET ROUND 6 For Dandenong, another difficult challenge awaits after they suffered a defeat at the hands of a powerful Essendon unit on Sunday. On an extremely dicey wicket and overhead conditions ideal for bowlers, the Panthers were sent in at the toss. Tom Donnell and Brett Forsyth nudged the ball around against the tidy attack of Matt Doric and debutant Cameron McClure to 0/21 before Donnell fell. Once the Dandenong skipper departed, several of his teammates followed suit as Doric and McClure were wreaking havoc with the white Kookaburra ball. After four of his teammates entered the sheds in quick succession, Ed Newman strolled to the middle of Windy Hill against an attack that could smell blood. At first, the young left-hander held his own, nudging the ball around when he could, while his teammates continued to fall at the other end. When Augustin became McClure's fourth scalp, the Panthers were in dyer straights at 9/87, big quick Jakeb Thomas joined Newman who immediately accelerated and smarted his way through the situation. While shortly beforehand, Newman demonstrated he could hold his own in the midst of a collapse, he then displayed not only the talent he possesses but the maturity that sits between his ears. Flaying the ball to all parts for the best part of the over, before nudging a single on the final ball to maintain strike, Newman reached and surpassed his maiden first XI half-century. In a matter of overs, Newman and Thomas put on a partnership of 58, with Thomas only notching the two runs.

Ex-Victorian star Nick Jewell lost his hat attempting this hook shot for Long Island against Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Pearcedale on Saturday. 200399 Trying to steal the strike once more, Newman ran himself out on 72, but he shifted the Panthers from an early defeat to a total to defend. In reply, Nanopoulos got the Panthers off to the perfect start, claiming his 300th first XI wicket that of the dangerous James Seymour, before nabbing another to put the Bombers on the back foot at 2/25. Unfortunately for the Panthers, the experience and class of Michael Hill and Connor Rutland guided the home side to victory, both snagging unbeaten half-centuries to remain undefeated in Victorian Premier Cricket.

MORNINGTON PENINSULA - PENINSULA DIVISION ROUND 5 Pearcedale remains one of two teams yet to register a win when it went down to premiership contender Long Island on the weekend. After being sent into bat, the Dales, led by skipper Mitch Andrew (36) posted a competitive total of 8/143. But ex-Victorian superstar Nick Jewell took the match by the scruff of the neck in a blistering knock. Jewell blasted 98 before he was removed just two runs short of his milestone and victory.

Long Island chased down the Dales' total in just 22.4 overs to claim a convincing win. Jake Roberts was the most economical and damaging of the Pearcedale bowlers with 1/15 from five overs. WOMENS PREMIER CRICKET TWENTY20 (ROUND 11) AND ONE-DAY (ROUND 1) Mignon du Preez provided the fireworks on a massive night for the Dandenong Cricket Club. With the men's and women's sides playing respectively at Shepley on Wednesday night, Dandenong won the toss against CarltonBrunswick and elected to bat on a sensational wicket. Du Preez sent the ball to all parts of Wilson Oval from the very start of her innings, in 69 deliveries, she sent the ball to the fence on 13 occasions and over it seven times on her way to a masterful 142 not out. The Panthers set a whopping 4/201 after 20 overs. In reply, the visitors made a good fist of the total, posting 3/127, but the tight bowling at the top from Sophie Molineux and Courtney Neale forced the target out of reach. In the first match of the one-day competition, Dandenong suffered a narrow defeat to the Ringwood Rams. Dandenong sent the Rams in and it paid dividends early when the Panthers had Ringwood 3/11 through two run-outs and an early scalp from the ever so reliable Lucy Cripps. The Panthers toiled away before Natalie Taylor cleaned up with 3/12 to reduce the Rams to 10/128 after 35. Dandenong got off to a horror start of their own, losing Erin Maxwell with only three runs on the board. Despite a strong knock from Tiana Atkinson (26), consistent wickets prevented the Panthers from two impressive wins inside a week.

By Nick Creely The talent in the south east seems near endless as the Southern Pioneers named their Under 18 Male Youth Premier League squad on Tuesday 5 November. The 13-man squad - which will represent the region in a seven-round tournament kickstarting on 13 January - is full of some of the finest young cricketers in the south east and the state, and will go almost certainly go in as one of the teams to keep an eye on during the Twenty20 carnival. With the youngsters developing rapidly at Victorian Premier Cricket level - with Ashvin Adihetty and Reiley Mark already having a taste of first XI cricket - the Pioneers' main Premier club links in Casey-South Melbourne, Dandenong and Monash Tigers are well represented. The youngsters, while playing against some of the best up and coming cricketers in the state, will also get the chance to play at some of the best facilities in Victoria, including Princes Park, Melbourne University, Casey Fields, Shepley Oval, Jubilee Park and Junction Oval. Adding to the Pioneers' selection, D'Rozario and Pednekar - both developing at the Monash Tigers - have been named in Vic Country's Under 19 side, which will play in the National Carnival in Perth from 2 to 12 December. The Pioneers have also named their Under 17 Female Squad ahead of the carnival, which will kick off on 1 December. It will conclude on 20 January with a clash at the Junction Oval, with some of the best local talent in the region set to strut their stuff. Southside’s streak stops at six straight WNBL victories By Tyler Lewis The Southside Flyers suffered their first defeat of the WNBL season against the UC Capitals ending their streak at six wins in a row. A blistering first half from the Capitals set up the strong 91-72 win. The Capitals pounced on the mistakes made by the Flyers in order to climb up the WNBL table, scoring 25 of their points off of Southside turnovers. Leilani Mitchell dropped 23 points, the

most for her side, and was the only Flyer to convert from beyond the arc. The Capitals, meanwhile, benefited from 20 bench points from Keely Froling to along with 21 from Kia Nurse. The Flyers have usually been extremely dominant at the post, predominantly through Mercedes Russell, but this week she could only manage five boards to go along with her 15 points. Kelsey Griffin took control under the rim

from the Capitals with 13 rebounds. After trailing by 23 points at the half, the Flyers mounted a comeback to win the third team and level the fourth, but by then the horse had already bolted. Southside coach Cheryl Chambers said her side didn’t come switched on for the contest against a good side. “We didn’t come out with the composure and physicality that we had been displaying early in the season,” Chambers told the WNBL website.

“(In) the first half it seemed like we couldn’t get a rebound and then when we tried together as a team we would bump the other out of the way. “Canberra are a quality team - I think mentally it will teach us a lot about how to switch on,” she said. The Southside Flyers still sit atop of the WNBL table, and will now travel north to take on Townsville in an attempt to regain their momentum in what has already been a superb season.

A great day for Cranbourne Cranbourne played at Pakenham on Saturday and brought home the points to record a great victory, while the second side also had a win against Bentleigh and the third side had a win against Narre Warren - topping off an excellent weekend of bowls for the club despite more ongoing winter like weather conditions. Coach Lyn Quigg was very pleased with the teams and went on to say: "(It was) a great effort today from all the Cranbourne sides. The top side playing at Pakenham today showed a great fighting spirit from all four rinks which was a great sign. "We were challenged late in the day but regrouped and came home very strong. I am also pleased with the tremendous efforts of our second side winning against Bentleigh, and our third side winning against Narre Warren". SIDE 1, DIVISION 2 Skip Lyn Quigg and his crew of Ian Barrenger, Alan Cook and Peter Elgar won by 10 shots while skip Mark Bland and his charges consisting of Neil 'Buddy' Drummond, Shane Morrison and Joe Byrne also handled the Pakenham conditions very well to win by six shots, contributing to a final victory by 14 shots against Pakenham. Cranbourne 80 (16 points) defeated Pakenham 66 (2 points). SIDE 2, DIVISION 2 Skip Steve Hickson was very modest after his game against Bentleigh but the proof of his team's great form was in recording a 21-shot berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
