"You think 130 years ago out here in Healesville, there really wouldn't have been a lot out here," Mr Hughson said. Mr Hughson, who took up the role as president in July, said that he's looking forward to the
immediate future of the historic tennis club. "It's an exciting time for the club, we've gone through a great year of facility upgrades. "We're redoing courts five and six, we've got new LED lights across all the courts ... And we're hopeful of securing another grant for this coming year to refurbish the clubrooms."

"Maybe there will be a bit more technology around line machines so there's no arguments as to whether a play was in or out." Healesville Tennis Club celebrated its 130th anniversary on Friday 15 November with a celebratory dinner and reunion for past members. The tennis club, which first formed in 1889, then hosted a barbecue lunch on Sunday 17 November to continue the festivities for club members. Tennis club member Bryn Jones said, "The tennis club started in about 1889. It was one of the first half dozen tennis clubs in Victoria, and very few of those that are still going. "Today, in my case, I don't play competition but it's a great social occasion for me." The club was initially located on River Street at the present site of the Healesville Bowling Club. In 1982, a new clubhouse was built on Don Road, where the club stands to this day. "Over years, it's very much been at the centre of social life in the town. Many well-known people have been associated with the club," Mr Jones said. Mr Jones wrote a book, Advantage Healesville, to celebrate the club's 120th anniversary in 2009. When asked as to how he's feeling about the anniversary, Healesville Tennis Club Life Member Alan Honeycombe told the Mail, "We're just wondering where all those years went. "We've been members here for 42 years. It's obviously had a rich history for the 90 years before that." Mr Honeycombe said some of his favourite memories were back in the 1980's where he believes tennis was at its peak as a family sport. "It's lovely to catch up with a whole lot of people who you haven't seen for a long time to find out what they've been doing since and why they're not still playing tennis. When asked where the tennis club might be in another 130 years, Mr Honeycombe joked, "Wow, we could be playing cyber tennis by then. "We'll still be needing exercise, so I'm hop-

Help shape the future A new sporting pavilion, covered tennis and netball courts and improvement’s for walking and cycling are some of the potential changes proposed for Yarra Junction Recreation Reserve, in Council’s latest Draft Master Plan. The Draft Master Plan has been developed using direct feedback from user groups of the recreation reserve and feedback from the local community, and proposes several potential improvements for the coming 10 years. This includes surface and lighting improvements for the oval, an alternate training and playing venue for the football and cricket clubs’ increasing activities, and collocating all sports into a single improved sporting and community building to include additional female change facilities. Other potential improvements include the redevelopment of tennis courts, an additional youth social recreation infrastructure, converting unused bowls green into a community plaza, improve access to the Little Yarra River for active recreation and more. O’Shannassy Ward Councillor, Jim Child, said the Draft Master Plan had been created with feedback from reserve users, to help solve short and long-term issues at the reserve. “With the town growing and a surge in growth with our local sporting clubs - including women’s Australian Rules teams - the ageing facilities at the reserve just don’t meet the current demands of the community, let alone the demands that will come up in the future,” Cr Child said. “This Master Plan will help us to map out and deliver improvements to meet those needs and ensure the reserve has spaces for the entire community. “We’ve heard from tennis players, netballers, footballers, Yarra Centre users, clubs and casual reserve users about what’s important to them when they think about the reserve’s future and where they think the current facilities are falling short. “That feedback has been used directly to

The Live.Move.Yarra Ranges initiative aims to assist and enable our community to take part in a series of priority projects, initiatives and programs over the coming years to make it easier for you to be part of a healthier, happier and more active community. Council identified a goal of ensuring people in the Yarra Ranges are physically active in its Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2017-2021 and believes this project directly aligns with that goal. Sports funding grants announced for eight groups Eight community organisations in the Yarra Ranges will share in $111,794 of funding to improve their sport and recreation infrastructure as part of Council’s 2019/20 Capital Development Grants Program. The grants will go towards projects that will allow for more active participation opportunities within the Yarra Ranges. Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr Richard Higgins said that all eight projects will provide significant health and wellbeing benefits to the community.
“It’s great to see this funding program continue to support not-for-profit organisations and their volunteers in delivering better sport and recreation facilities for their community,” Cr Higgins said. “I’d like to congratulate all recipients on their successful applications and I’m looking forward to seeing the outcomes of these projects in future.” The successful grant recipients include $25,000 to the Yarra Glen and District Pony Club for an all-weather arena, $15,000 to Up-
wey-Tecoma Cricket Club for cricket net restoration, $11,500 to Kilsyth Junior Football Club and $12,000 to Woori Yallock Junior Football Club to fund behind goal netting. Belgrave Heights Tennis Club will receive $7,794 for court restoration works, Lilydale Bowls Club will receive $20,000 for a community recreation area, Seville Pony Club will receive $7500 for a cross country jumping complex and $13,000 will be put towards renovating the bathrooms of Upwey South Tennis Club.
The assessment of the submissions were undertaken by staff from council’s Recreation Active Living and Community Development teams, with feedback to be provided to applicants who were unsuccessful. IN BRIEF
Sports bar kicking off at Chirnside By Jed Lanyon Sports fans will soon be able to watch their favourite teams locally as Sporting Globe is set to open their newest franchise in Chirnside Park. The $6 million investment will lead to Sporting Globe's 16th and largest location yet. The bar and grill will accommodate 200 diners across two floors, with a total capacity of 700 people. The store will boast 10 private booths, allowing patrons to select their own sports channels, a premium beer garden with a retractable roof and a 200-person flexible function space for servicing the community. Sporting Globe's CEO James Sinclair told the Mail that he is keen to see locals enjoy their favourite sports at the new location. Mr Sinclair grew up in Coldstream and said that it will be great to see a Sporting Globe near the place where he once called home. "It's a really rewarding and exciting feeling. This area, having grown up here and knowing it so well, is crying out for a good food and beverage offering. "To be able to be a part of that and bring a brand that I started nearly 10 years ago back to our home stomping ground is a tremendous and exciting feeling." Mr Sinclair welcomes local sporting clubs to get in contact with Sporting Globe to form what he hopes will be great long-lasting relationships.
Former Healesville resident Tony Duddy is urging men to undertake regular medical checks in an effort to tackle cancer early. Mr Duddy has become an advocate for men's health after being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017 as well as having polyps removed from his bowel and three different types of skin cancers removed from his body. Mr Duddy, who now lives in Mount Gambier, said that he is in good health and has attended local fundraisers for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in September. He now shares his story to co-workers, while telling them of the importance of keeping on top of regular visits to the doctor. Mr Duddy said that prostate cancer is the second biggest cancer killer of men in Australia, claiming 3500 lives a year. "Really by getting early checks we should be able to reduce that number down by 80-90 per cent," he said. "One of the fears that blokes have is the digital examination but that happens less and less now."
A Ducati motorcycle was caught allegedly travelling at double the speed limit at East Warburton on Saturday 16 November. State Highway Patrol motorcycle officers clocked the motorcycle travelling at 160km/h on Woods Points Road in an 80km zone about 1pm. The male rider, aged in his 40s, had his motorcycle immediately impounded for 30 days. The Healesville man is expected to be charged on summons with excess speed and other traffic related offences.

Sporting Globe CEO James Sinclair with franchisees David Sinclair and Elise Wallace at the site of the next Sporting Globe bar. Picture: BRENT EDWARDS Upon completion in mid-next year, Sporting Globe will provide 70 new jobs and sponsor local clubs and community groups, having already donated over $350,000 to local Australian sports clubs over the past nine years. James' brother and Sporting Globe franchisee David Sinclair told the Mail, "There will be a lot of TV technology in there, probably over 60 HD TV's, 60-70 inch screens. "There will be a lot of vision, you won't miss a game." The Chirnside Park Sporting Globe will be located in between Reading Cinemas and the Maroondah Highway in what is currently used as car parking space.
Mr Duddy said that blood examinations are the most common approach before determining whether a digital examination is necessary. Mr Duddy said that having prostate cancer can have a toll on a man's mental health. He admitted to having his own struggles following his involvement in a car collision, where a motorcyclist was killed. "There was a study that said that men with prostate cancer are 70 per cent more likely to commit suicide. "All cancers have a higher risk of suicide but prostate cancer rates higher. "It's because it's in a man's manhood, so it can get into your head. It does threaten your confidence. "The feedback I've had from guys has been mind-blowing. I have had a lot of guys coming here saying they've had their checks and they have been well received and that everything is under control. "The number of people getting cancer is getting higher and higher. Odds are that you're going to be affected by cancer. "That's why it's important to get on top of it before it gets on top of you."
A 24-year-old Healesville woman is in custody an alleged armed robbery in Kew on the morning of Wednesday 13 November. Investigators have been told the woman produced a weapon and demanded a victim's phone in Yarra Boulevard about 9.10am. The victim refused to hand over the phone and the female fled in a silver Lexus station wagon. The vehicle was seen by Nunawading Highway Patrol members who attempted to intercept the car which refused to stop. The vehicle was then seen a short time later in Bullen. Police monitored the vehicle and initiated a pursuit. The car was stopped by police in Mitcham Road at the intersection of Victoria Road, Mitcham. The woman is assisting police with their enquires.

The 45-year-old woman was conveyed to hospital with critical head injuries and passed away on 29 March. The driver, a 45-year-old Coldstream man, has been charged with dangerous driving causing death. He has been bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 20 November.
Bus crash charge Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit have charged a man after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a bus in Ferntree Gully on 12 December 2018. The collision occurred on the Burwood Highway just after 7.30pm. The 38-year-old Ringwood man died at the scene. The bus driver, a 60-year-old man from Woori Yallock, has been charged with dangerous driving causing death. He has been bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 20 November. Tony Duddy has become an advocate for men's health. Mr Duddy and his family have had a long connection to the Healesville township as he said his great-grandfather moved to the area in the 1850's. "There's been a Duddy in Healesville ever since then. My mother is the only one living there at the moment. One day I plan on moving back again."

Exciting times ahead On Tuesday, 12 November, I was honoured to be elected as Mayor of Yarra Ranges by my fellow Councillors. It's been 17 years since a Councillor from Chirnside Ward has been elected to the role of Mayor, and I'm thankful for the trust of my colleagues in electing me for the coming year. I'm looking forward to learning more about the Yarra Ranges and my fellow Councillors' Wards in coming months, getting out and meeting community members and representing their interests at Council and to all levels of Government. Through my current and previous terms as Chirnside Ward Councillor, I've had a lot of experience in our urban area, learning about the different pressures and opportunities the community face, from developments, community projects and Council infrastructure. Each of our communities have different cultures, priorities and goals, and part of my role as Mayor is helping to represent that with our Ward Councillors - especially when advocating to the State and Federal Government,

A new mayor in town Councillor Richard Higgins has been elected as mayor of the Yarra Ranges for his first term at council's 12 November meeting. Cr Higgins was unanimously elected as Mayor by his fellow councillors, who he thanked for voting him into the role. "It's been 17 years since a councillor from Chirnside Ward has been mayor, and what a great honour it is to be in this position," Cr Higgins said. "To my fellow councillors, thank you so much for your support. There's a lot of work ahead of me, a lot of learning - I acknowledge that - but I look forward to it. It's going to be a great challenge." Cr Higgins acknowledged the work of outgoing mayor, Chandler Ward councillor Tony Stevenson, and thanked him for his commitment and work over the last 12 months. "For the last year, Cr Stevenson has been absolutely fantastic," he said. "Without a blemish, you've held this role for our council. Thank you so much for your efforts." Cr Higgins said he was looking forward to his year as Mayor, representing his urban Ward, his fellow Councillors and all of the teams at Council to the wider community and all levels of Government. Walling Ward councillor, Len Cox, was unanimously elected to the role of deputy mayor. "I'm very pleased to spend the next 12 months as deputy mayor," Cr Cox said. "It's a great honour to be elected deputy. Council continues to do such good things in the community, and the Council is operating so well on behalf of the community that I feel very, very proud to be amongst the leadership group here. Roadside slashing to protect communities main forest roads." "Roadside slashing not only reduces fuel loads, which greatly improves the effectiveness of the road for planned burning or backburning operations, it also enhances road safety for forest road users by improving sightlines and increasing the usable width of the road." The work is carried out using specialised machinery such as tractors with side-arm mowers or excavators with mulching attachments. "Roadside slashing is an integral part our roading program to enable quick access for
vehicles transporting heavy firefighting machinery such as bulldozers and excavators to a bushfire," Mr Brennan said. One of the heavy vehicles FFMVic will be using in the upcoming fire season is a Unimog, a specially designed all-terrain tanker that holds up to 4000 litres of water. The township slashing program involves slashing grass vegetation on areas of crown land that pose a risk to private property. It's important carry out this program in late spring and early summer to target the peak growth period of vegetation - If the slashing
is carried out too early the regrowth requires follow-up treatment later in summer. Works have just commenced and will be finished in the new year. "As we undertake slashing and roading works, planned burns are still being monitored for spring. We have recently completed a 6.2 hectare planned burn near Reefton and may undertake another burn in the area weather permitting. Planned burns reduce bushfire risk to communities and protect important community assets and the environment," Mr Brennan said. 12433253-CG48-19
Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) will undertake 212km of roadside slashing and five hectares of township slashing to protect communities ahead of the hotter months this year. Yarra State Forest, some surrounding park areas and the townships of Powelltown, Wesburn and Reefton are key areas for slashing. Nigel Brennan, FFMVic district manager Nigel Brennan said, "Our roadside slashing program, which has increased significantly over the last couple of years, targets grass and scrub vegetation that is regrowing next to

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Slow down for hidden gem Wild Cattle Creek Estate is one of the Yarra Valley’s hidden gems. Although located on the main Warburton Highway, in between the townships of Wandin and Seville, most people tend to zoom past and glance to their left, not knowing what lies behind the bull on the gates. There’s a newly fitted out restaurant that can seat up to 60 people and an adjoining function room with views of the lotus pond and vineyard that can seat another 80 people. Add to that, the charming cellar door for wine tastings and on-site 4.5 star boutique accommodation, drivers can take the time to slow down, turn left and sample its offerings. Wild Cattle Creek Estate (WCCE) is under new management and also has a new head chef. The vision is simple: to bring back good old-fashioned service and amazing local fresh food to the valley. The new menu, which was released midApril, includes specialised meats from Flinders Island including wagyu steaks, 900-gram rib eyes and aged vintage beef. WCCE also incorporates local produce and a selection of cuisines from around the globe. It caters for vegetarians, vegans and any dietary requirements with prior notice. Venue manager Cathy Skinner described the venue as idyllic with many different options, making it ideal for functions, birthdays and weddings. With so many choices of ceremony locations, including a purpose-built gazebo, WCCE offers luxurious yet cost-effective wedding packages that are tailored to suit any needs and budget. Accommodation includes the historic heritage-listed Wallace Homestead, built by the

“We have a very large bitumen car park so you will never struggle to find a spot,“ Ms Skinner said. “We also have easy access to the venue and are wheelchair friendly, and have a disabled toilet, and baby change room. “Our friendly staff look forward to welcoming you soon.“

It’s cool to be kind By Jed Lanyon Yarra Glen Primary School celebrated World Kindness Day in style by donning Kind is Cool T-shirts to help spread a positive message. Socially-conscious clothing label Kind is Cool donated apparel to teachers to wear for the occasion. The partnership came about as Kind is Cool founder Amber Wilkinson has her two sons Chet and Nash attending the school. Having partnered with Bully Zero, Mrs Wilkinson is on a mission for make the world a kinder place for all humans as $2 from every Kind Is Cool product sold goes to the anti-bullying organisation. "We talk to students about how people have an invisible bucket, and by being kind you help fill their bucket up. And if you're being negative or nasty towards them, you are dipping out of their bucket and emptying it. "There's a lot of negativity in the world and if we can do an act of kindness each day, it'll make the world a better place," Ms Wood said. Mrs Wilkinson said it's an honour to see members of her community proudly wearing the Kind is Cool T-shirts. "We love it here, and we love what they're doing with the kids," she said. "Our core value is to teach the next generation that being kind is cool." For more information about Kind is Cool, visit www.kindiscool.com.au.
YAVA celebrates ceramics By Jed Lanyon YAVA Gallery and Arts Hub recently opened a new ceramic exhibition VESSELS, which features works from master potter Ted Secombe, who spoke at the opening on 7 November. The exhibition features 26 pieces from the Margaret Lawrence Collection as well as 13 local artists. Margaret Lawrence Bequest chair Jan Cochrane-Henry spoke highly of Mr Secombe. "He is a master potter with an international reputation. He exhibits all over the world and now we have him here in the Yarra Valley," she said. "He is intimately acquainted with the artists, some of whom have passed away, but are very high profile artists that date back to 1921. "It's extraordinarily important and special to me is that we are able to exhibit to the pub-
lic and the Yarra Valley community the quality of all of these arts. "It's a capital city quality gallery and something that the community should be proud of." Works include that of the Boyd family, including Merric Boyd, who is known as 'the father of Australian pottery'. Mr Secombe was equally excited to see the range of ceramics on display in YAVA's gallery. "I'm just so happy to see all this beautiful work. It's such a privilege to have it all here in the Yarra Valley. It's part of one of the finest accumulated collections of ceramics in the whole country. "Since YAVA started, you can see this incremental spike upwards of the quality of works that are being shown in the area," Mr Secombe said. YAVA art gallery director Andrew Chew said he loved the range of diversity in each of the

Tigers have 2020 vision By Jed Lanyon Woori Yallock Football Netball Club is preparing to field a women’s senior team next year following the success of the league’s first season in the AFL Outer East. Women’s footy has exploded in popularity across the valley as Woori Yallock is set to join Seville, Emerald and Yarra Glen in hosting senior women’s teams along with the six teams who competed in this year’s season. AFL Victoria football development manager Danny Ryan said that there is high demand for women’s footy as their very first come and try session featured 17 women, when other new teams were expected to feature a handful of participants at an early stage. “It was the first time we had seen numbers like that for a come and try night. The growth in the women’s competition over the last 18 months has been incredible. “There is a real appetite for women’s footy in the region,” Mr Ryan said. One player, Nicole Kimpton, told the Mail that a further 80 women expressed their interest by joining a private Facebook group ‘Woori Yallock Women’s Footy’. “I’m super excited, It’s exciting to be challenged and to try something new. I’ve played netball for a long time now and I think it’d be grouse to give football a go,” Ms Kimpton said. “I’m excited to make some new friends, get stronger and be more confident.” Ms Kimpton said that her friend Josette O’Donell, who helped create Healesville’s premiership women’s team, encouraged her to do the same for Woori Yallock. “I’ve always wanted to play football, but I felt a bit intimidated going into other clubs when a lot of them already know what they are doing.” Her future teammate Georgia Kogelman said, “I’m looking forward to getting involved with a group of girls in a team sport, getting fit and having fun.” Like Ms Kimpton, she said she too had always wanted to play the sport and was excited at joining a new team at its formation. “I have no idea what I’m doing. I didn’t even know how to kick a football. To come into a team that is brand new where heaps of people don’t know how to play football, it was a lot easier to join and learn and develop together.” Ms Kogelman said her only experience with the sport was running water at her brother’s games and playing marks-up on Christmas day. Ms Kimpton works for Eastern health and said that the team had been by the This Girl Can campaign. “We want to reach a particular group of
Kelly Fletcher, Nicole Kimpton, Georgia Kogelman, Callista Anderson, Jen Vermeulan, Mel Smith and coach Matthew McArthur are looking forward to Picture: JED LANYON forming a senior women's team for 2020. 200906 women in the community that may not have ever given sport a go. We want them to know that it’s never too late to get active. “We encouraged women of all abilities to come down, have a laugh and some fun in a non-judgmental environment. “VicHealth suggest that a reason for women
being inactive and not giving sport a chance is because they fear being judged on their appearance and not being fit enough. “Whilst recruiting, we remind the women that not all of us have played footy before so we are all in this together. We are hoping to focus on building up our fitness, strength
and confidence.” Woori Yallock will be hosting another come and try day for their senior women’s team on Wednesday 20 November at 6.30pm at Woori Yallock Recreation Reserve. For more information about the team or to join, contact: contactwyfc@gmail.com.

Wandin prove wise By Anthony Sequeira Two day cricket returned to the Yarra Valley this weekend. In DJSS, Healesville traveled to Wandin in a game where the home side had the upper hand after day one. Batting first, Wandin openers were cautious early before opening up their scoring rate. Healesville opener Jordan Poynton fought back to have both openers in the sheds 10 overs into the innings. Unfortunately for the Bloods, Shaun Falkingham and Tim Thorne, were resolute in defence and confident in attack as they put on a near 150 partnership. Jordan Poynton continued to be a thorn in Wandin’s side. His six wicket haul helped minimise the damage caused by Wandin’s batsmen as they declared at 9/276. Chasing a large score Healesville was always going to need some significant partnerships but Wandin took regular wickets and stopped the Bloods (134) from ever really being on track. It was an impressive victory for Wandin as it shapes to be the team to beat early in the season. In RAFT Blue Healesville bowled 39 economic overs at Wandin last week and finished 5/55. Scott Fawdry was brilliant with the ball,
taking 3/9 from 18 miserly overs to choke the Wandin batsmen. The only batsman to even look somewhat comfortable being Josh Hamilton, who stood unbeaten at stumps with his side 5/55. As Wandin were bowled out for just 71, a determined Healesville outfit - inspired by Andy Jakubowicz (52) - finished 9/173 to record an impressive victory. After heavy rain last week, the game between Yarra Junction and Coldstream reverted back to a one day game this week. Coldstream lacked any large batting partnerships, however, maintained a respectable four an over for most of the innings, taking its score to 6/136. Yarra Junction maintained a steady scoring rate, Ray Turner proving the steady hand as the batting flourished around him. Coldstream took two wickets before Matt Robinson joined Turner and together they put on an unbeaten 70 run partnership to take their side to victory. Raft Gold saw ladder leaders Woori Yallock dismantled by Marysville in a one-sided affair at Gallipoli park. Tom Goldstraw took three early wickets to have Woori teetering at 5/41. Enter Chris Ronalds who came in and mopped up the Woori Yallock tail in no time with 4 wickets for just the one run to see them all out for 43.
Marysville made light work of the chase passing the score 1 down with Ben Stewart hitting 25 to record a nine wicket victory. Launching Place traveled to take on Warburton in their Round 6 clash. Warburton openers Shane Abblitt and Josh Sharp got their side off to a solid start, then late hitting from Daniel Geary (52) took Warburton’s score to 4/190 from 40 overs. In reply, Launch were in trouble early with both openers back in the shed. Stuart Parker combined with Lenny Jenkins to put their side back on track with an 80 run partnership. Meanwhile Jarred Darkin brought the late runs to see Launch get over the line with three overs to go. In one day grade, Jake Neale again led Poweltown to a win over Healesville despite 50 from Joshua Handasyde. Paul Osborne (50) led Yarra Junction to a win over Wandin and both Launch seconds and thirds lost against Coldstream and Yarra Glen respectively. Yarra Valley Cricket Association is looking for players to field a senior country week side again this year from 17 February to 21 February. The Yarra Valley is always looking for umpires. For more information, contact Greg Mitchell 0418 341 154 or Keith Thompson 0408 353 076.
Healesville Social Golf Club hits the road By Karl Hradsky Healesville Social Golf Club decided to take a trip north of the divide with 12 members playing at Mansfield Golf Course.
The fairways were in good conditions with the greens fast and true. Vince Gillett (32) hit a very nice 39 (Stableford) with only one wipe to take first place. Travis Carroll (10) came second hitting his
handicap with a score of 36. Third was Wayne Ware (16) scoring 35. Nearest the pins on the 5 par 3 holes were Earl Louw, Paul Colomb, Wayne Ware and two to Karl Hradsky.
