SUMMER IN THE DANDENONG RANGES

SUMMER TIME IS PLAY TIME

BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT

TAKE the time to be in the outdoors and feel the difference. Play spaces can be the ultimate in a family day and can help both kids and their parents wash the worries of the week away. We all know that fresh air, stunning views, amazing wildlife and spectacular gardens all make for an entirely wonderful adventure, and luckily the Dandenong Ranges is home to some of Melbourne’s best playground areas. Once a golf course, that closed in 2012, the new playspace in Olinda is a boon to the area and is well worth the trip into the hills. With a spectacular setting, lots of activities and equipment for kids to play on, stunning views across the Yarra Valley, and a Coffee van, Olinda playspace is the perfect spot for the entire family. There is a lovely mix of wooden structures, natural rocks and colourful slides and soft fall rubber matting, which makes it playful but still fits in with the natural surrounds. When it comes to equipment, this park has it all. There’s fun slides, swings and swinging baskets, a large rope climbing area, in-ground mini-tramps, a cubby house, roundabout, and water play are leading into a small creek. You can even climb on a giant lizard. For those seeking a cooler setting off the mountain, Emerald Lake Park has plenty to offer. Considered a major tourist attraction in the Dandenong Ranges, Emerald Lake Park is Cardinia Shire’s premier park and has something for everyone. With paddleboat rides, a model railway display, cafe, free barbeque facilities, and Puffing Billy station, Emerald Lake Park is great for an early afternoon picnic with the kids. Emerald township is just around the corner and the bakery offers a large assortment of sweet treats and savoury snacks. Olinda Playspace is located at 75-77 Olinda-Monbulk Rd, Olinda and Emerald Lake park is at Emerald Lake Rd, Emerald.

Get the hula hoops out and play around at Emerald Lake.

The forest is magical and aesthetically pleasing to the eye, make sure to bring your camera. DANDY RANGES

REJUVENATE WITH A ROADTRIP

BY DEREK SCHLENNSTEDT

FEEL the bustle and fast pace of the city fall away as you follow the winding road up through the thick, tall forests and cool, fern gullies of the Dandenong Ranges. Explore the towering forests of mountain ash trees firsthand and see the spectacular sight of thousands of rhododendrons in bloom. Among the most well-known and enjoyable trips is the drive through the Dandenong Ranges Tourist Road that cuts through the lush forest landscapes of Sherbrooke Famous for its towering trees and spectacular views, Mt Dandenong Tourist Road links the foothills of Ferntree Gully with Olinda as it winds its way up Mount Dandenong. Lower the windows and savour the fragrance of the Australian bush as you pass through the forest. Gaze up at the immense mountain ash trees, which scatter the sunlight on the cool understorey of green ferns below. As you pass through Sassafras stop in for a famous Devonshire tea, or sit down for a leisurely meal at one of the great eateries dotted through this lively village. Be sure to browse the antique shops and art galleries in Olinda before heading on to Monbulk. As you head down the mountain along Olinda-Monbulk Road, stop in at The Burnham Beeches Piggery or drive on to Monbulk, passing under the huge trees of the Alfred Nicholas Gardens, which always look glorious. As you drive past, take a look at the half-hidden clay sculptures of Aboriginal figures among rocks and tree ferns at William Ricketts Sanctuary. Pass through Monbulk and onto Emerald-Monbulk road - a quiet little scenic drive that will lead you to the relaxing hamlet of Emerald.

Take a drive through the cool climate forests of the Dandenong Ranges

Emerald is a charming town, nestled in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges with a lush rainforest on its doorstep and filled with the sounds of native birds. Just a short drive from the main street is Emerald Lake, which is the perfect place to enjoy the colours and temperate climate of summer. The lake is widely considered the region’s premier park and is a major tourist attraction. As one of the destination points for the iconic Puffing Billy, the park offers a range of activities including picnics, walking trails, paddleboats and fishing something for everyone. With the sun getting low it’s time to head home, but why not take the scenic route. Follow Belgrave-Gembrook Road back down to Ferntree Gully, but not before stopping in Belgrave for a feed. From there, it’s a straight run down Burwood Highway, back to Melbourne. 12401376-CG50-18

THE YARRA VALLEY’S SPICE THE Yarra Valley Herb and Chilli Festival started in 2012 as a local celebration of the taste and health benefits of using herbs and chillis. The festival was started by Clive and Di Larkman as a way to promote their range of herbs, chillis and other edibles grown under the Renaissance Herbs’ brand. They are true foodies and have a great love of food, wine and everything related. They also have a passion for doing things right from day one and making sure that they always deliver a product above expectations. They wanted their festival to be a fun, family event at which everyone involved has an amazing time and are pleased to be there. “The festival has become a must-attend part of the food and wine scene in Melbourne,“ Clive said. “It is a two-day celebration of how we use herbs and chillis in our daily lives through the presentation of food and drinks, sauces, plants and cultural gear associated with those cuisines that focus on spice and flavour. “There will be a food court with dishes from 15 plus cuisines, four stages: lectures, cooking demonstrations, relaxed music and cultural dance and bands. “Also, the Australian Chilli Cook-off is on each day. The competition stage has the Hellfire Chicken Wing Challenge, ’Tequila Shot and Holler’ and the Captain Chilli eating competition.” The festival is a family event so entry for under-14s is free and there is a kid’s area with jumping castles, face painting, pony rides and an animal farm (which are also all free).

WINE COUNTRY

Q&A WITH WALLY ZUK FIVE Oaks Winery is a small family run vineyard and winery located among the lush, rolling hills on the southern side of the Yarra Valley. Established in 1978 the mature vines, plus the local climate and deep red volcanic soil, produce high quality fruit. The vineyard slopes gently westward, overlooking cherry and stone fruit orchards, with Mt Dandenong in the background. Owner and winemaker Wally Zuk explained his involvement in Yarra Valley Smaller Wineries and the importance of small wineries to both himself and the region. How long have you been in the wine industry? I have been involved for twenty-five years. How did you get involved with Yarra Valley Smaller Wineries? As the owner of Five Oaks Vineyard, I was involved at the inception of the Smaller Wineries group when just six smaller wineries met and agreed to work cooperatively to promote our cellar doors. I think it was in 1998. Since then we have grown to encompass over 20 small, family owned wineries. What do you enjoy most about your job? I don’t consider making wine a job. It is a very enriching passion. I get a real satisfaction from interacting with the cellar door visitors, discussing wine and sharing experiences of memorable occasions involving wine and food. Have you always enjoyed wine? Yes. Especially after my introduction to Henschke’s 1967 Hill of Grace in 1970. Why are smaller wineries so important to the Yarra Valley? They are important because they offer the wine consuming public an opportunity to meet one-on-one with the owners and winemakers of premium hand-crafted wines not generally available in retail outlets. How important is it for Yarra Valley wineries to do more than just produce wine? Very important in the sense that Yarra Valley Smaller Wineries puts on two of the now longest running wine and food festivals in the Valley - they provides the public with a laidback experience, a chance to meet the maker, and an influx of traffic to the area, which helps other local businesses as well. The group also contributes a percentage of profits to local community groups including the CFA. What makes for a memorable Yarra Valley dining experience? Good simple food matched with the right wine and good company in a venue with the right ambiance that overlooks the magnificent views around the Yarra Valley How has the wine industry changed since you’ve been involved? In terms of the Yarra Valley, the explosion in the number of cellar doors - there were only about 20 when we started; now there are some 70+. What do you see for the future of wine across the region? I see tougher trading conditions because of the large number of producers giving a highly competitive environment, You’ve invited friends for a picnic lunch in a Yarra Ranges park. Which wine do you take along? Being a Cabernet maker with a passion for that variety it would be a good aged Cabernet! Touristnews

FARM FRESH

SOURCE SOME DELICIOUS RED GEMS

12402873-CG13-09

WANDIN Valley Farms loves cherries. From growing to packing and distributing, cherries are their life. Since 1893, the Sebire family has proudly grown "only the finest fresh cherries", beginning with their first orchard at Mont de Lancey farm in Wandin North. Wandin Valley Farms is now fully owned and operated by the Sebire and Jones families, with three generations of the family actively involved in the business. The delicious red gems are sourced from three farms across Victoria and Tasmania; each site has been chosen for its ideal and specific growing and climactic conditions. Wandin Valley Farms' cherries are then packed at its state-ofthe-art packing and distribution facility in the Yarra Valley. This recently upgraded facility provides packing and dispatch services to a wide range of domestic and international markets. The orchards focus on growing traditional dark cherries, as well as a small quantity of blush cherries.

pick fresh, have fun!

To complement their sweet cherry production, Wandin Valley Farms also grow sour cherries which are available from late December each season, and Sweet Pixie Cherry Plums, which are harvested throughout January. During the packing season of late October to late January, the Wandin Valley Farms shop is open to cherry lovers who are invited to come and pick up a delicious treat. Pick up a box (or two, or three!) of fresh cherries direct from the farm, or take home one of the beautiful cherry jams, relishes, sauces and pastes so you can enjoy the flavour all year round. The shop is located at the packing and distribution facility at 47 Hunter Road, Wandin North. FARM FRESH

BERRIES RIPE FOR THE PICKING SUMMER means the height of berry season in the Yarra Valley. There are plenty of places to pick up farm-fresh produce that’s ready to take home, but u-pick is also a fun option for a day out in the valley. The farms will have someone on hand to offer advice ahead of any picking adventure, but Tourist News found a few tips to give visitors a head-start this spring. The best time to pick berries is in the early morning hours before the heat builds up in the fruit. This is when they’re at their sweetest. A good blueberry is round, firm, plump and a deep blue with no cracks in the skin. White blueberries haven’t started to ripen yet, and small and hard berries are likely to be very sour. They’re also not ready for picking if their outer cap opposite the stem is still green or red. Blueberries should easily separate from their stems. Any that don’t are probably not yet ripe. They won’t get any sweeter or riper after picking so berry gatherers need to choose wisely. Strawberries should be bright red, and also won’t continue to ripen once picked. Size doesn’t matter, but the berries should be plump and firm and their caps should be green. The best raspberries are brightly-coloured, plump and free from blemishes. Blackberries should range in colour from a deep blue to a deep purple to black, and should be plump and firm to the touch.

Visitors can access the track from either Eyre Road or Osprey Track and then walk to the lookout which is particularly photogenic at sunrise and sunset. While on Mount Dandenong, visitors can head to William Ricketts Sanctuary to capture some unique shots. Nestled in a small inlet on Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, the sanctuary offers an iconic experience. It hosts over 90 different sculptures carved into rock and tree trunks. Featuring these on social media will be sure to gain plenty of likes. The Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens is another picture perfect location known for its waterfalls, water features and beautiful landscaping. But one of the most iconic images visitors can capture is the boat house by the ornamental lake, where numerous visitors go just to get their photo taken. If it’s more waterfalls photo seekers are after, the Olinda Falls have plenty to offer. Located within the cool climate of the Olinda Reserve, visitors can snap photos from numerous locations including the viewing platform and base of the falls. When it comes to doing activities and taking photos, the 1000 Steps is the place to go. Some would even say they haven’t completed the steps unless it’s posted on Instagram. The activity not only offers a walk with views under thick forest canopy, but also provides the perfect opportunity to share a workout completion on social media once finished. If visitors venture about 10 minutes down Burwood Highway towards Belgrave, they will stumble across the Puffing Billy Railway. Photo opportunities can be found on the train itself or down by the Puffing Billy Railway Trestle Bridge.

The Redwood Pine Forest is a photographers dream.

SNAP TO IT... MAKE MEMORIES BY ROMY STEPHENS

THE Yarra Valley is a hotspot for avid photographers looking to boost their social media content. Whether its views, waterfalls, nature or selfie spots, this region has it all. The Redwood Forest in Warburton is one of the most popular sites for visitors to capture unique shots. With almost 1500 Californian Redwood trees towering up to 55 metres above, visitors can wander through the forest and take plenty of different pictures as they go. While in Warburton, visitors can head over to Mount Donna Buang for some more photo opportunities. Before reaching the peak of the mountain, be sure to stop off at the Rainforest Gallery on Archeron Way. Here, visitors can enjoy a treetop walk, get close and personal with Mountain Ash trees and take some scenic shots of Cement Creek. Once finished at the Rainforest Gallery, visitors can continue along Donna Buang Road towards the mountain’s observation tower. Spectacular panoramic shots await for those who aren’t afraid of heights. A trip out to Marysville is also a photographer’s dream in the Yarra Valley. With plenty of viewing areas on offer, Steavenson Falls is a great location to grab some social media snaps. Visitors can capture one of Victoria’s highest waterfalls from platforms that extend from the base all the way up to the top of the falls. Connected to Steavenson Falls is the track to Keppel Lookout. Climbing up through the Stringybark and Mountain Ash forest will see visitors come across the lookout with spectacular views over Marysville, Steavenson Falls and towards the Cathedral Ranges. A photographer that captures all of these locations throughout the Yarra Valley can expect to have social media followers wanting more. SUMMER 2019/2020 35
