n Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Business Awards...
High achievers By Danielle Kutchel Businesses from across Greater Dandenong were celebrated for their innovation, business smarts and commitment to the region in the Greater Dandenong Chamber Business Awards. Held at the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club on Wednesday 4 November, the night was a fitting way to end the year, as businesses from across Greater Dandenong came together to celebrate and recognise each other's achievements. MC Debbie Lee kept spirits up over the duration of the ceremony with her upbeat commentary, even bursting into song on stage in a move that kept the crowd smiling. Eleven businesses were nominated, along with three youth nominees, across seven business award categories and a special youth enterprise award. The major award of the night, the Greater Dandenong Chamber Business Award, was taken out by Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) Springvale Botanical Cemetery. SMCT also took home the Employment award. Business Development Manager for SMCT, Megan Petty, called the double win a "wonderful recognition". She said the organisation had approximately 300 staff working across a number of teams. The diversity of staff presented challenges for management, but Ms Petty said they were well managed. "I think the overall professionalism was something that stood out to the judges. They came with no knowledge of the business and I think were quite amazed." Zoe Atterbury, who is completing a Certificate IV in Disability Services at Chisholm, won the Youth Enterprise Award and said her win was unexpected given the calibre of the nominees. The award winner had originally studied and worked in events and administration, but found that she wanted a job that felt more rewarding. "I wanted a job working one on one with people, helping them have better lives," she said. Ms Atterbury now works for Hire Up, an online platform for people with disabilities to manage their support workers, and is a carer for Home Instead Senior Care. She plans to study a diploma in dementia and continue her work with the elderly.

"It's a fantastic night to award the recipients for their hard work, and for people to nominate for different awards shows they're interested in not only their own business but also the business of all of Greater Dandenong," she said. Chamber president Paul Broom praised the
organisation of the event and said it had been well run. "I'm very happy with the turnout, the engagement and the support," he said. The president also thanked the major sponsors who made the event, and the chamber's continued work, possible. "Hilton manufacturing tonight is one of our sponsors, and the chamber is given free accommodation in Hilton as an office," he said. "That is a massive commitment to the
chamber and it helps us to be able to invest in making events like this successful." He added that the final event for the year was an opportunity for the chamber to reflect on what had been and what could be next year. "We are a very dynamic chamber," he said. "We have a growing, strong membership base. We are chamber that's got a tremendous span, from the major players, right down to one-person accounting businesses. We provide something for everybody."

Recycler’s quiet success By Taylah Eastwell and Danielle Kutchel The use of plastic milk bottles to create noiseblocking barriers for freeways is what led Aus Group Alliance to be awarded the innovation award at the Greater Dandenong Chamber Business Awards on Wednesday 4 December. The company has supplied and built noise walls for major roadways including EastLink, PeninsulaLink and the Tullamarine Freeway. Recent projects also include Sky Rail Dandenong to Caulfield, Westconnex in New South Wales and the M5 Upgrade in New South Wales. With an untelling concrete appearance, many are not aware that these walls were built from formed recycled plastic. A kilometre of the panels would consume two million milk bottles. “We can solve the recycling problem overnight,” owner Nick Marandos said..

Sporty Soccer5s kick on By Taylah Eastwell and Danielle Kutchel The Dandenong Soccer5s kicked business goals at the recent Greater Dandenong Chamber Business Awards, winning the small business award. Soccer5s centre manager Jack Gillibrand told a previous Chamber of Commerce event at Hotel Atura that the centre's world-class synthetic pitches were filled with 250 teams a week. The owner of the centre recognised the soccer-rich area of Dandenong as the right fit for these state-of-the-art synthetic fields, which are popular in the United Kingdom but did not exist in Melbourne at the time of construction. Soccer5s opens its pitches to the Doveton Special Soccer School for weekly training, a Dandenong High School girls' side and its own junior pathway programs and teams.

Double win for tranquility By Taylah Eastwell and Danielle Kutchel Springvale Botanical Cemetery was the standout at the annual Greater Dandenong Chamber Business Awards on Wednesday 4 December. The cemetery, whose 422-acre immaculate gardens are four times larger than the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne, took out both the employment category and the main category of the night, the Greater Dandenong Chamber Business Award. Business development manager Megan Petty told of the cemetery's mass of 80,000 trees and 30,000 rose bushes, comparing this to the mere 15,000 plants that the Royal Botanic Gardens boasts. "It requires one million litres of water a day to maintain - all harvested from the site's three vast dams and roof-sourced rainwater tanks," Ms Petty said. Whittling away at waste By Taylah Eastwell and Danielle Kutchel Future Recycling Dandenong wasted no time at this year's Greater Dandenong Chamber Business Awards, taking home the winning trophy in the large business category. With plants in Pakenham and Dandenong, the carbon-neutral business diverts 70 per cent of collected waste away from landfill. To date, Future Recycling is the only certified carbon neutral waste and recycling organisation. The company has transformed brick and concrete rubble into road base material, green waste and timber into mulch and PVC cable into granulated copper. Founder of Future Recycling Tyrone Landman told a recent business award nomination event of their efforts in dismantling 180-tonne transformers from power sites to retrieve copper, steel and other waste for recycling.

Thrifty rise to the top By Taylah Eastwell and Danielle Kutchel Thrifty Car and Truck Rental Dandenong have taken out the retail category at the Greater Dandenong Chamber Business Awards on Wednesday 4 December. Dandenong's Thrifty franchise started as a used car yard hit hard by the 1990 recession. Founders Rick and Rhonda put up their last five cars for hire, and soon had a thriving franchise with a $30 million dollar turnover. In the past five years, their fleet has grown from 500 to 2200 vehicles, employing over 135 staff members across their 16 Thrifty franchises. In addition to being a blue chip brand in the car rental industry, Thrifty demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to the wider community as well as to the general public along with their exceptional customer service.

Haste on waste Critics have slammed a short public submission period for a waste-to-energy plant in Dandenong South ending soon after the Christmas-New Year holiday period. The formal application for the facility at 70 Ordish Road was released to the public on 3 December by the state pollution regulator, the Environmental Protection Authority Victoria. The EPA Victoria set a closure for public submissions at 8 January 2020. The regulator is still to assess the application by proponent Great Southern Waste Technologies. It also awaits a building permit from Greater Dandenong Council. Cr Maria Sampey has written to Greater Dandenong Council to stage an “independent” information session before submissions close. She said the submission period was too short, given that residents will be distracted by Christmas and the holiday period. In a recent motion, she successfully called for a hold on the council’s approval until the EPA assessment - as well as the council undertaking community consultation. “I’m upset that no one (on the council) has done anything about the community consultation. “If we get one organised for the end of school holidays on 30 January, then it will be too late.” Cr Matthew Kirwan said it was “really disappointing” that the EPA had instead promoted an information session staged by the proponent Great Southern Waste. “The state government authority promoting the applicant’s information session is a conflict of interest and inappropriate.” The plant’s site is 160 metres from Dandenong Creek, and 600 metres east of the nearest residences as well as 1.5 kilometres from Somerfield housing estate. It is also east of Mt Hira College (1.4 kilometres), Buddhist and Sikh temples (about 1.5 kilometres), and a Freemasons Victoria facility (1.9 kilometres). According to the submission, the plant will
use technology from Norweigan company Energos with a “proven ability to meet stringent European Union emissions standards. It will pose a “negligible” risk to human health, Great Southern Waste claims. The plant will create a net reduction of 142,000 tonnes of carbon-dioxide equivalent emissions - or greenhouse gases, according to Great Southern Waste. It is still estimated to emit 9500 tonnes of carbon-dioxide equivalent from its filtered 55-metre smoke stack. The plant is described by Great Southern Waste as using gasification at 850°C to incinerate 100,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste and commercial and industrial waste a year. Director Bill Keating said it would be diverting household waste from landfill. Half of the waste fuel is expected to be food scraps, Great Southern Waste stated. The submission has a long list of excluded material such as prescribed industrial waste, asbestos, building materials, radioactive waste, chemical waste, medical waste, carcasses and residential ‘hard waste’. Mr Keating said there would be “considerable legwork” done to audit and screen incoming waste to ensure there were no contaminants. “We don’t want to process that stuff. Plus if we let it through, we just wouldn’t be licensed.” The plant, through a steam-driven turbine, is expected to generate 9.3 Megawatt hours of electricity, enough to power the plant (1.4 MWh) as well as about 7000 homes. About 20 per cent of the waste turns to bottom ash and other ash and residues. The byproducts have “significant potential as a re-usable product”, Greater Southern Waste asserts. There will be continuous monitoring for sulfur dioxide, hydrogen chloride, oxides of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, particulates and total organic carbon. The EPA and Great Southern Waste will co-host the drop-in information session on Wednesday 11 December. It is from 6 to 8pm on 11 December 2019 at Quest Apartments, Dandenong.

IN BRIEF Man charged with Lyndhurst hit-run
Drink-driver smash devastates family By Cam Lucadou-Wells A drunk and speeding P-plate driver who ran a red light and catastrophically crashed into another motorist at Springvale Junction has been sentenced to youth detention. Diu Yual, 20, of Cranbourne, pleaded guilty to negligently causing serious injury, drinkdriving and dangerous conduct at the County Court of Victoria. About 4.45am on 14 January, Yual drove home from a party at Richmond with five passengers along Princes Highway. When he ran the red, Yual was estimated to be travelling about 113 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. His alcohol blood level was 0.207. His car T-boned the passenger side of a Corolla turning right. According to the witness, it was an "almighty bang" and the sound of a "bomb going off", Judge Claire Quin noted during sentencing. Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives found no sign of either car braking before impact. The Corolla's driver, a husband and father of two who was on the way for work, was pulled out of the car unconscious. Spending days in ICU, the man required life-saving surgery for severe brain injuries.
He required an artificial ventilator for two weeks, and later a tracheostomy - a tube inserted in his throat for breathing. The man was kept under deep sedation for nearly the same time. He was not released from hospital for several months. His prognosis was "not good", according to a letter from his doctor tendered to the court. The man had since moved out of the family home to live with his parents, requiring 24hour supervision. According to his partner's victim-impact statement, the impact on the man and his family had been "massive". "My life will never be the same. My boys will never be the same," she wrote. Most of Yual's passengers were not wearing seatbelts at the time. One was trapped in the car, all were hospitalised. Yual, who initially gave a false name and birth date to police, suffered multiple fractures. He required surgery for serious neck and spinal injuries and is still on painkillers. A South Sudanese refugee, Yual migrated with his family to Australia at 5. He achieved "good" VCE results and became a "talented" basketballer, Judge Quin said. He'd been selected to vie for a scholarship with a US prep school. But to his disappoint-
ment, he was refused a visa into the States. In the months leading up to the crash, Yual started drinking heavily and regularly partying with friends. Judge Quin noted Yual had no previous criminal history, and significant support from family and school friends. He was regarded as a hard-working, considerate young man, she said. Showing remorse, Yual pleaded guilty early, was young and had positive rehab prospects. He was willing to speak to students about the impact of drink-driving on him and lovedones. Judge Quin said his offending was all "too common in the cohort of community members you belong to" - that is young men drinking alcohol, driving and disobeying road rules. "This experience shows the damage done on the road when you completely disregard the duty you owe to other road users." 100 years ago 18 December 1919 Salvation Army Appeal £25,000 asked for by Christmas An effort is being made by the organisers of the Salvation Army appeal to endeavour to complete the Victorian quota by Christmas. If this is to be done, over £8000 is required by that date. The authorities think it is quite possible, but suggest that this is based upon the assumption that intending donors will now actually send in their amounts to the honorary treasurer, Mr H B Howard-Smith, 35 Market Street Melbourne.
50 years ago 11 December 1969 What an Impact It is almost certain the 54321 dance will not
be held in Dandenong again. The dance was to be held last Saturday night in St James Church hall, but it was cancelled late in the week. Hundreds of youngsters turned up at the hall only to find the doors locked and the place in darkness. When they realised the dance was not going to be held most attended the opposition dance 'Impact' in the Town Hall. Now there is only one teenage dance in Dandenong and there does not appear any like hood of another opening up. The operator of 54321, Mr Eric Fersberg said yesterday he booked St James hall for a teenage - style dance. He also booked the top ":pop" band the Town Criers to appear at the dance, together with his own group the Rondells. However he said the Town Criers told him on Thursday that they would not be appearing.

8 December 2014 Mobs go on the rampage Two mob attacks in Greater Dandenong last week landed good Samaritans in hospital. About 60 African men brandishing fence palings attacked a Noble Park man who stepped in to stop their rampage along Corrigan Road. The 23 year old was driving north along the road in Noble Park about 10.45pm on 29 November when he saw the group chasing two men of Island appearance. He pulled over at Walsh Street and intervened but the group turned on him, smashing a bottle below his right eye and vandalised his car. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Tony Lavars said deciding whether to intervene in an assault was a personal decision. "I would always call triple zero. You have to think of your own safety as well" he said.
Dandenong the takeaway town Almost $40 million is spent in Dandenong central business district each week, confirming the City as the second most important in retail behind the Melbourne central business district. Greater Dandenong's chief executive Mr Warwick Heine last week surprised his audience at the inaugural Dandenong Retailer's Association business Awards when he said figures showed on average $800,000 was spent on takeaway food, $254,000 on alcohol $185,000 on women's clothing and $250,000 on fruit and vegetables. He urged traders to make the most of the business support the council could provide instead of running both the council and Dandenong down.

After 20 years of providing beginners with lifelong swimming skills, owners of Dandenong's North Lodge Swimming Academy are gearing up for their deep dive into retirement. Leanne and Colin Byron have made their splash in the swim teaching industry over their years at North Lodge Academy, The pair made it their mission to continue North Lodge Swimming Academy's valued reputation and tradition, which was first established back in 1966 by Jim and June O'Doherty. After years devoted to the school, their decision to sell their respected business didn't mark the end of the race for Leanne and Colin. The pair held on to their beloved swim-school

"When looking for new owners it was important to us to find an experienced operator who would embrace what North Lodge represents to the community and to our team," Leanne said. They found exactly what they were swimming around for when they met new owners Daina and Ben. Daina is a qualified teacher and pool operator with experience in co-ordinating swimming programs. Trespasser ‘fight’ death By Cam Lucadou-Wells Police are seeking further information on a street fight and death of a 37-year-old man in Dandenong North. Ahmet Gezer, of no fixed address, died in hospital after being involved in a fight with a 31-yearold Dandenong North man in Carlton Road between 5am-5.30am on Monday 2 December. The other man has spoken to Homicide Squad detectives and released pending further inquiries. Detective Inspector Tim Day, of the Homicide Squad, said the essence of the continuing investigation was determining the other man's culpability and whether his use of force was reasonable. He said at about 5am, a 26-year-old woman spotted a "suspicious" Mr Gezer at a nearby bus stop as she drove from her Gladstone Road address, just north of Carlton Road. She U-turned and drove back past her home, observing Mr Gezer in the front yard, Det Insp Day said. She called her husband inside the home. He came outside and followed Mr Gezer east along Carlton Road, where the pair fought. "We don't know if it lasted five minutes, 10 minutes or 15 minutes," Det Insp Day said. But at the end, Mr Gezer was left unconscious with serious injuries. He was attended by paramedics and died in hospital several hours later. Forty-eight hours later, police intercepted vehicles on Gladstone and Carlton roads between 5am-6am to uncover more witnesses, dashcam footage and information.
Ahmet Gezer died after fighting with a resident in Carlton Road, Dandenong North on 2 December. At this stage, police have CCTV and neighbours' accounts of what they heard during the fight. No weapons were used in the fight. Detectives were trying to corroborate what was said and what was physically done, Det Insp Day said. "The circumstances are a little bit sketchy on how it occurred," Det Insp Day said. "The aim is to bring as much evidence as we can to the table. "We only have one version of events." Mr Gezer was wearing a grey, white, red and black checkered jacket, shorts and dark shoes at the time. Any information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Sign’s good for historic site The first sign of restored life has sprung at the site of what will be Dandenong's newest art gallery. At the site on Mason Street are currently the Masonic Temple ruins, regarded as significant heritage and an example of early-1900s achitecture. On 4 December, Greater Dandenong mayor Jim Memeti and Freemason representatives unveiled an interpretive sign paying tribute to the history. The imposing two-storey building was home to Freemason members until 1991. Greater Dandenong community services director Martin Fidler said it was important to
acknowledge the history before the building undergoes a major renovation in 2020. "It's one of Dandenong's most recognisable heritage buildings and it will be wonderful to see it bought back to life as the Greater Dandenong Gallery of Art," Mr Fidler said. The gallery will showcase local and touring exhibitions and artists and provide a space for community events, he said. "The new gallery will host a dynamic exhibition program that speaks to diverse audiences, both locally and in the wider regions." The works start mid-next year and are expected to run about 18 months.

IBAC HEARING
Lobbyist ‘went too far’ A planning consultant admitted that she went too far in lobbying for developer John Woodman's interests in City of Casey, an IBAC hearing was told. Megan Schutz, a qualified lawyer, said she shouldn't have coached Cr Sam Aziz with regular text messages during a council debate on the H3 intersection in Hall Road, Cranbourne West on 16 October 2018. As she sat at home watching the live-stream of the meeting, she offered tactics such as “you need to read the SCWRAG letter” and “don't take Rowe's bait about Wolfdene”. Ms Schutz told IBAC that she’d helped refine the mentioned letter from the Save Cranbourne West Residents Action Group (SCWRAG), a group she’d helped to set up with interested locals. It was a “commercial interest dressed up in a community argument”, she said. At one point during the vote, Ms Schutz texts that Cr Aziz's arguments are “muddied”, and to stress that the community's lives were being put at risk. “On reflection I wouldn’t do this again,” she told the IBAC hearing on 4 December. “I wouldn’t send text messages again. I’d provide my briefing note and that would be the end of it.
Sam Aziz, left, John Woodman, Lorraine Wreford and Megan Schutz at Sandhurst Golf Club. “I think what I did was advocate too hard for a position but I did not have any influence.” Before the council meeting, Ms Schutz was tapped in a call spelling out the arguments not to defer the intersection works. “So what – what is the recommendation that we’re seeking tonight?” Cr Aziz asks Ms Schutz. “‘Cause I actually haven’t gone into my emails yet, I’ve just been flatout.” Ms Schutz replies: “OK. So your recommendation tonight is that Council does not support the grant of secondary consent to defer the intersection works.” Counsel assisting IBAC, Michael Tovey, asserted at an earlier hearing that Ms Schutz act-
ed like a “ventriloquist expressing to Mr Aziz what he has to say to council about an issue which he hasn’t prepared at all”. After the council meeting, Ms Schutz is recorded in a phone tap telling Mr Woodman that Cr Aziz didn’t stick to the “script”. “I think we won,” Ms Schutz says – despite Cr Aziz doing a “crap job tonight”. “He didn’t do what I asked him to do. Anyway, he’s an absolute fool that guy.” She said: “If Aziz had just stuck to the f***ing script we wouldn’t have had the f***ery we had tonight.” Under IBAC questioning, she denied that she thought of Cr Aziz as a “puppet”. It was typical “blokey” and “jocular” dialogue that she had with Mr Woodman. National media coverage of the call had “completely obliterated” her professional reputation, she said. “I’m not proud of it today because I’ve lost my ability to have an income for my family. “I didn’t mean that about Cr Aziz. I thought it was a private conversation.” Ms Schutz was reluctant to call the ‘script’ anything but “briefing notes” and a “speech”. She didn’t agree that her intervention was “coaching” or “directing” Cr Aziz. She called it
“lobbying” or “advocating”. “I’m advocating for my client’s position but I can’t make them say something.” Ms Schutz said she’d been instructed by her client Mr Woodman to brief councillors Aziz and Geoff Ablett between 2015 and 2019. The pair of councillors are accused by IBAC of receiving $1.2 million from Mr Woodman for their support on planning decisions. Ms Schutz was aware that Cr Ablett had a conflict of interest due to a race horse link with Mr Woodman. She said the law prohibited Cr Ablett from voting on Woodman-related matters but not from lobbying other councillors behind the scenes. She “perhaps naively” thought that she was instructed to brief Cr Aziz because he was not conflicted, she said. Ms Schutz said she’d sat at meetings in which Mr Woodman had allocated political donations but he’d never asked her advice on the issue. “It seems like I’m well and truly involved in briefing councillors but I honestly have not known they have been paid money and they've been bought. “On reflection I think it should have crossed my mind.”
SCWRAG’s developer link ‘not secret’, says key player By Cam Lucadou-Wells It was 'not secret' that a Cranbourne West residents action group was being funded and advised by property developers, planning consultant Megan Schutz has told an IBAC hearing. IBAC has alleged that the Save Cranbourne West Residents Action Group (SCWRAG) was funded $193,000 by property developer John Woodman's company Watsons and Ms Schutz's firm Schutz Consulting. Developer dollars were used to set up the group, pay the group's leader as a consultant and to fund its legal representative. "It was a commercial interest dressed up in a strong community safety argument," Ms Schutz told IBAC in relation to the group and the developer's "aligned" interests on the H3 intersection project. "And yes, we were using the community as a basis for my client's commercial interests." Ms Schutz helped set up SCWRAG. She was financed to do so by another developer Leighton Properties. At the same time, she was a consultant for Mr Woodman's Elysian Group which owned the Alarah estate in the area. She also engaged with another active devel-
oper in Cranbourne West - Wolfdene, in which Mr Woodman's son Heath was a partner. Leighton also funded a barrister to represent SCWRAG at a Planning Panels Victoria hearing into the proposed Amendment C219 rezoning in Cranbourne West. There was no requirement to disclose the arrangement to PPV, Ms Schutz told the hearing. IBAC has heard that SCWRAG leader Ray Walker was paid $60,000 a year by Mr Woodman's company - via Schutz Consulting as the conduit. The consultancy job was to do "market research" in the South East. Ms Schutz was involving in preparing a letter from SCWRAG to lobby Casey councillors ahead of a crucial planning vote on the H3 intersection in Hall Road, Cranbourne West on 16 October 2018. She arranged for the letter to be provided to councillor Sam Aziz, who moved an alternative motion also provided by Ms Schutz that night, she told IBAC. She said that the group's community safety arguments in the letter "aligned" with her client's commercial interest. "Everyone knew that my client had aligned itself with the community. It wasn't a secret."
Counsel assisting IBAC, Michael Tovey, told Ms Schutz that "you didn't want anybody to know that you were pushing this motion before the council". "I thought everyone did know," Ms Schutz replied. "I can't recall saying to Councillor Aziz, 'This is a big secret. Don't tell anyone I'm briefing you.'" Ms Schutz was also accused of "coaching" Sam Aziz "minute by minute" during the Hall Road debate - texting him instructions as she watched the live-streamed meeting at home. She conceded that "people wouldn't have known about the text messages". In one of the texts to Cr Aziz during the debate, she stated: "Nothing to do with Wolfdene. This is a request from the community only." "Literally read, (the words) look dishonest and they appear to be a lie," Ms Schutz explained to the inquiry. "What I actually meant, and it is in shorthand, was that the arguments in favour of the alternative recommendation were clothed in a community safety argument and there was ... no mention of Wolfdene in them." Ms Schutz was asked about a tapped phone call with Mr Woodman, in which she says Mr
Behind the scenes, a council of conflict By Cam Lucadou-Wells Four of Casey Council's 11 councillors were conflicted in a crucial planning vote in October 2018 due to links to property developer John Woodman, an IBAC hearing has heard. Mayor Geoff Ablett and councillors Susan Serey and Amanda Stapledon declared their conflicts and left the council chamber ahead of a vote on the H3 intersection in Hall Road Cranbourne West on 16 October. In the IBAC hearing, commissioner Robert Redlich observed that if Cr Sam Aziz "recognised what Mr Woodman acknowledges was a conflict of interest" he would have withdrawn as well. "So we would have had a council debating a motion with half the councillors not there. "All conflicted because of an interest that the developer has - Mr Woodman." Cr Ablett declared a direct financial interest, as he did with Woodman-related matters from 2015. IBAC alleges that he had received more than $300,000 from the developer. Cr Susan Serey declared an indirect interest described as 'State Election'. IBAC heard that Mr Woodman had spent about $15,000 on her unsuccessful state election campaigns. 6 STAR JOURNAL

Amanda Stapledon, centre, after being elected mayor in October 2018, with deputies Tim Jackson and Rosalie Crestani. Cr Amanda Stapledon also declared a conflict. IBAC has been told that Mr Woodman donated $40,000 to Cr Stapledon's 2014 state election tilt. He also gave funds to Blairlogie Living and Learning - a supported accommodation facility attended by Cr Stapledon's son. A tapped phone call revealed Mr Woodman and his planning consultant Megan Schutz's intense interest in the vote - and the upcoming mayoral election. Ms Schutz told Mr Woodman she didn't think Cr Ablett was "not a sure thing" to be returned as mayor on 29 October 2018. "Geoff does not have (Cr Tim) Jackson and (Cr Rex) Flannery's votes ... He thinks he's got

them, he doesn't have them. "And he doesn't have (Cr Damien) Rosario's vote. Rosario hates him." She speculated that Cr Stapledon may support Cr Rowe as mayor ahead of Cr Ablett. Mr Woodman told her: "Darling, he hasn't got Amanda's vote. I'm meeting with Amanda tomorrow." IBAC heard that Cr Stapledon later met with Mr Woodman to support her election as mayor. She was successfully elected on 29 October. Ms Schutz said Cr Ablett was "the best person to be Mayor". "It's just a pity he's bloody conflicted with us. "I don't know why we ever, ever, ever declared a conflict in relation to him." Mr Woodman said it wouldn't be a disaster if Cr Rowe was mayor. "If Gary gets the mayoralship you can still f*** Gary up. "Gary being mayor does not mean that people continuously vote for him for the next 12 months." Ms Schutz said: "People can turn around and realise what a dog the Mayor that they've voted in is."
Walker "would never, ever expose any of us". Feeling "under pressure", she asked for extra time to reflect on the question. She said that she thought it was referring to Mr Walker not exposing his work for Schutz to rival developer Dacland. "But on reflection today, I mean, everyone knew that - everyone knew that Ray Walker was working with me in relation to the H3 intersection issue." She said that she'd been instructed to engage Ray and Valery Walker as lobbyists for their community. Commissioner Robert Redlich asked if it was "unusual" for "a developer to engage the head of a community representative group and pay them to be advancing arguments which support the developer's interests?" Ms Schutz said: "I think a lot of community groups, where the community's objectives align with a developer, you will find a developer is rescourcing them." She agreed that the law ought to require disclosure of the conflict of interest. "But (for) incorporated associations ... and non-registered lobbyists, there's no rules around disclosure at the moment in the law."
Here’s to the brave few By Andrew Cantwell The IBAC investigation into questionable dealings between property developers and some at the Casey Council has clearly been fuelled by people ‘in the know’ behind the scenes - whistleblowers - who were unhappy with what they were seeing played out in the council chamber. Articles by The Age over a number of years, and a report by the Victorian Ombudsman in 2015, have also benefitted from the efforts of whistleblowers brave enough to call out - and provide details on - what has been brought to light for the rest of us through the coercive powers of IBAC in the last three weeks. Counsel assisting the inquiry Michael Tovey QC said he hoped the public hearings would “assist the investigation” by encouraging others with knowledge of further dodgy dealings to come forward. Simply, IBAC wants to hear from more whistleblowers at Casey. So if you know something, speak up. FOCUS ON … CHRISTMAS IN DANDENONG
Salvo plea The Salvation Army is encouraging Dandenong locals to connect with their community this Christmas. Christmas is one of the hardest times of the year for Australians doing it tough, with large numbers living in poverty and struggling to afford basics such as food. Many will also spend the festive season alone. “At Christmas, the Salvos will serve more than 100,000 meals, distribute more than 500,000 gifts and toys and support more than 70,000 families in need. But we can only do this with the support of the Australian public,” Dandenong Captain Claire Emerton said. Christmas is the busiest time of year for the Salvos. Not only is The Salvation Army in Dandenong running its annual Christmas Cheer operation, to provide toys and food for those in need, it is also preparing for Christmas Day service. “Whether you are by yourself, or with friends and family, Christmas is a time that is best spent together. So join us, so we can share the true spirit of Christmas,” Captain Emerton said. For more information about what The Salvation Army is doing at Christmas locally and across Australia, go to salvationarmy.org.au. If you require assistance at Christmas with food and gifts, please call 9704 1940. If you need emergency assistance, call 1300 371 288 (9am-5pm Monday to Friday).
Reak Deng, Isaac Mead and Claire Emerton are encouraging Greater Dandenong residents to dig deep for Christmas. 200677

FOCUS ON ‌ CHRISTMAS IN DANDENONG
Santa hits the road By Taylah Eastwell Santa is trading his reindeer and sleigh for a big red truck in order to make his way around Keysborough before Christmas. Keysborough CFA has ambitious plans to see Santa visit 14 locations across town, stopping for 15 minute intervals to visit children and their families. Captain Paul Townsend said the brigade used to try and cover all of Keysborough but with the boundaries expanding and just one truck, timed intervals were the best way to allow kids to meet with the man in red. "It's a tradition that we look forward to every year. We get out to the children of our community and see the smiles we put on the kids faces. It's an absolute pleasure to mingle with the kids and have photos with Santa taken," Paul said. Dancers deck the village By Taylah Eastwell Students of Emerson School and residents of Dandenong Valley Village Mews Retirement Village are dancing away the line that divides younger and older generations. A Christmas party was enjoyed by 20 students visiting the village and performing both line dancing and singing for the residents. Throughout 2019, both residents and students have been involved in a line dancing program run by Middle Campus principal Dianne Wright and teacher Elizabeth Ralph. Principal Dianne Wright said the program is a wonderful program based on mutual respect and kindness. "Many long and enduring friendships have been made between the students, staff and residents," she said. The school has been coming to Valley Village Mews for 25 years. Over that time, the residents of Village
Mews have donated money to the school, raising about $30,000 in total. This year a cheque for $1,220 was presented. The donations have established new playgrounds, audio visual equipment and uniforms for the school's RACV Energy Breakthrough teams. More recently it financed the cross-campus broadcasting of assemblies when poor weather prevents students moving between both campuses. Meanwhile at Valley Mews, the residents committee is now busy preparing for a village Christmas party on 12 December. Christmas lunch will be provided to over 100 residents, with several giveaway hampers raised from resident donations. Talented staff member Robyn Sherer has, as always, decorated the Community Centre with an array of Christmas decorations, which certainly give the village a warm Christmas spirit.

FOCUS ON … CHRISTMAS IN DANDENONG
Care for furry good friend By Danielle Kutchel Christmas is a time for family - and pets are family too, meaning they too deserve special care and attention over the festive season. It can be a hectic time, with visitors, deliveries, and even time away from home to cope with, along with hotter weather. Changes in routine can be distressing for some animals, and the extra feet in the house, or banging on the door by the postie, can be distressing. Disruption caused by family members going on holidays can compound the stress your fur baby feels at this time of year. RSPCA Victoria has put together a number of tips on how to keep your pet happy, healthy and safe this season. Tips include: Keep decorations up high and out of reach of playful pooches and clever kitties who might see your delicate glass baubles or dangling tinsel as toys. Tinsel, string and ribbon might seem like fun, but they can cause obstructions in the intestines if a pet ingests them. Glass baubles can break into dangerous shards if your pet plays with them, so it's best to keep them out of harm's way. Don't feed your pets cooked bones. If you plan to give your pet some meat scraps, make sure these are given in small quantities and are free of any sauces that might upset their stomachs. Many Christmas plants, like holly, poinsettia, lillies and mistletoe are highly toxic for pets, so keep them out of reach. Ensure your pet has a quiet spot where they can rest, de-stress and wind down, away from noise, visitors and prying children. Don't allow children to hug and kiss your dog and if the dog licks its lips, shows the whites of its

CHRISTMAS IN ENDEAVOUR HILLS & DOVETON
It’s Casey for Christmas The City of Casey has events planned across the municipality for the community to come together and celebrate the festive season. City of Casey Mayor Councillor Susan Serey said there is so much to do around the City of Casey at this time of year and encouraged residents to join their loved ones in spreading some festive cheer. “As we move closer to the holiday season, there’s no better time to catch up with family and friends for an afternoon or an evening out,” she said. “Why not head down to Wilson Botanic Park, Berwick, for one of their many twilight flicks, or for a photo with Santa on Saturday 7 December, where your four-legged friends are also invited. “‘Tis the Season is returning to the Old Cheese Factory on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 December, where guests can marvel at the festive lights and wander through the magical displays, keeping an eye out for some very special guests.” Don't miss the magnificent Christmas tree and nativity scene have been set up at Bunjil Place for visitors to admire. Cr Serey also acknowledged the people in our community who don’t have as much to be thankful for and encouraged other residents to keep an eye out for upcoming volunteer opportunities, to assist in what can be a very difficult and challenging time of year for some. “There are some people in our community who don’t see this time as year as much of a celebration, but thankfully, we have an abundance of local services and charities who are here to help in times of need,” Cr Serey said. The mayor encouraged residents to donate donate food, clothes or other charitable items to local support services, just a few of which include: Casey North Community Information and Support Service The Andrew’s Centre in Endeavour Hills Cranbourne Information and Support Service Divine Family Care in Doveton The Transit Soup Kitchen and Food Support Program (Narre Warren) Local Salvation Army Branches and various churches “A little donation, be it your time, money or physical items, can go a long way to brightening someone’s day,“ Cr Serey said. The City of Casey also supports several local Christmas carols, which are free for the whole community to enjoy. These include: Christmas on the Foreshore, Tooradin Foreshore Reserve, Friday 6 December from 6.00 pm Clyde Carols by Candlelight, Hillcrest Christian College, Saturday 7 December from 5.30 pm Endeavour Hills Christmas Carols, South Eastern Christian Centre, Saturday 7 December from 5.00 pm Hampton Park Carols by Candlelight, Cairns
Road Reserve Oval, Friday 13 December from 7.30 pm Narre Warren North Community Carols, A’Beckett Road Reserve, Saturday 14 December from 7.10 pm Berwick Carols, Edwin Flack Reserve, Saturday 21 December from 7.00 pm Carols by Twilight, Max Pawsey Reserve (Narre Warren), Tuesday 24 December from 6.00 pm To find out about other upcoming events over the next two months, check out the City of Casey and Bunjil Place websites.

James Nanopoulos is closing in on a huge Panther milestone. 199458
Pictures: ROB CAREW
On the verge of history By Tyler Lewis At the crease is where every batsman wants to spend his Saturday, unless James Nanopoulos is at the top of his mark. Nanopoulos is in sublime form and is closing in on the Dandenong Cricket Club's wicket record - currently held by Roger Gill with 313 scalps. As a youngster, Nanopoulos lived and breathed cricket, and it wasn’t long before he was spotted by Dandenong club champion Warren Ayres. Ayres welcomed Nanopoulos to the first XI with a clinical batting display - with three tons in his first three games. “As a kid growing up, cricket was always on the TV in summer and footy in the winter. Every Christmas photo there is a photo of me with a new bat,” he said. “I always tried to do everything - I love fast bowling, even though I am not fast, I like watching the fast bowlers go about it. “I love batting just as much as well. “I came down (to Dandenong) in 2004, there was an open day and I got an invitation from Warren Ayres and played the next season and that was it. “After he (Ayres) came off in my first game, after he made 190 - he came up to me and goes ‘you haven’t seen me bat before have you?’, I said ‘no I haven’t really’, he goes ‘it is pretty good isn’t it’ - I didn’t know what to say really, I thought spot on and then the next two games he made hundreds as well so I was like yeah he is unbelievable. “All the old blokes just said ‘yeah that’s Warren’, he knew he was good and he was good, we couldn’t believe it, we just thought yeah there is ‘Ayresy’ making another hundred, it was more a surprise when he went out early than when he made a hundred.” Despite closing in on the milestone, Nanopoulos still shakes off the title of the Panthers' best ever bowler, while saying he had no idea he would reach the record when he picked up Shaun Craig and Rob Quiney as his 18 STAR JOURNAL
|
Nanopoulos is also having a destructive year with the bat, as evidenced by his 96 not out for Dandenong in the Super Slam. He is the full package. 201968 first scalps as a fresh-faced debutant. “I don’t think I am the best ever bowler - there has been much better than me, I just didn’t go to a higher level,” he said. “All the Pattinsons and Siddles have gone on to represent Australia and Victoria a lot more, so it won’t really sink in until I have retired, it is kind of bittersweet, not being able to play any higher but also being able to play for 15 years for Dandenong and enjoy every minute of it. “I never would’ve thought coming as a batsman who never bowled much my first four or five years, it has been a long road but very enjoyable.” Although being a consistent performer at Victorian Premier Cricket level, often one of the first picked in the Team of The Year at sea-
Tuesday, 10 December, 2019
son's end, Nanopoulos never was granted the opportunity to play for his state, although he was keen to. “Absolutely - if you are not aiming to play as high as you can what is the reason for playing nine months of the year and training for no real benefit?” he said. “You go to Premier Cricket to play as high as you can, to try and get far as possible, but I reached my pinnacle unfortunately. “Something I can’t really control, but to play with ‘Sidds’(Peter Siddle), ‘Jimmy’ (Pattinson) and Darren (Pattinson) and all the other international blokes we have had over the years has been fantastic. “I couldn’t have asked for a better time in my life than my 15 years at Dandenong."
Over his time at Dandenong, Nanopoulos has made some lifelong friendships - none more-so than another successful Panther who bowls and bats with similar style and aggression. “I am pretty close with Jimmy (Pattinson) we are pretty much the same age and we have a lot of stuff outside of cricket in common,” he said. “We have got to know each other pretty well over the past 15 years - he is a great fella. “It has been more satisfying watching him get back and reach his pinnacle with all the injuries he has had than other blokes who may have been getting an easier ride. “To watch him work his way back from Premier Cricket nearly every time - come back and help us out as much possible then go on to bigger and better things - has been fantastic.” This season, Nanopoulos is claiming poles for fun - including snagging career-best figures of 7/43 against Geelong. But while his numbers suggest he is in career-best form and is a raging-hot favourite to take home the Panthers' prodigious McArdle Medal, Nanopoulos believes he has just reaped the rewards this year without his form changing drastically from previous seasons. “I think my past three or four years have been really consistent,” he said. “Obviously I have taken a fair few wickets this year, but I have probably bowled better. “I have been able to get a few more rewards this year, which has been nice. “Over the past three or four years I have been pretty consistent with my bowling and I have been able to contribute a fair bit, which has been good." James Nanopoulos has claimed 24 first XI wickets so far this season - six more than the next best (Carlton's Evan Gulbis with 18) - but more importantly he is only seven wickets from the club record, and will no doubt be ticking that milestone off sooner rather than later. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

Mitch Healey steams in for Springvale South in an impressive debut game. 201973
Pictures: STEWART CHAMBERS
Tim Ford charges in for the Bloods. 201973
Blood runs deep for Javid What a season it’s been so far for Springvale South overseas pro, Ateeq Javid. The Bloods' skipper - who plays for Leicestershire in the County competition - is making a serious splash in the 2019/20 Turf 1 season, and once again provided his side with a match-winning knock, this time against Hallam Kalora Park at Frawley Road. The win was built off yet another solid bowling performance from the Bloods, with spinner Jarryd Straker (3/36) once again bamboozling the opposition as the Hawks scrambled their way to 7/152 off 40 overs. Mitch Healey (1/19) was also impressive in his Turf 1 debut. Despite the Hawks managing to snag important batsmen Nathan King and Ryan Quirk without too much damage, Javid cracked an
unbeaten 75 off 115 balls, sending five balls to the boundary in the classy innings, while fellow recruit Akshay Ballal (47 not out) also showcased his power with the blade in a comfortable win with six overs to spare. The unbeaten half-century lifts Javid to an astonishing 527 runs at 105.4 across all formats, with just two scores under 50 this year as his side finds itself top of the table. Park Oval, meanwhile, saw yet another genuine Turf 1 blockbuster involving the reigning champion Buckley Ridges, which held off a brave Narre South in a typically high-scoring affair. The Lions came into the game on top of the ladder and blasted 226 after winning the toss and batting, with impressive bat Rumesh Rangana cracking a 65-ball 70, sending five sixes sailing
over the boundary in a devastating knock. Cameos from Matt Brooks (45), Kyle Hardy (35) and Jawed Hussaini (30) were crucial as the Lions set themselves up to defend their total against a Bucks batting line up missing Daniel Watson. It was the worst possible start for the home side, which lost superstar South African David White for a rare third-ball duck, but champion sides find a way to lift to another level when challenged. The Bucks were 4/58 after a whirlwind spell from seamer Tim Phillips (3/30), but slowly but surely got back into the contest through crucial knocks from Troy Aust (41) and Greg Todd (59 not out), who showcased their immense leadership and composure under pressure to turn the game around.
The Panthers pounce on maximum points By Tyler Lewis The Panthers are back in the hunt. After a powerful performance at Shepley Oval on Saturday, Dandenong is back in the Premier Cricket finals race. Beginning the day at 3/78, the start was vital in how the day was going to play out and Comrey Edgeworth combined with Ed Newman to get the Panthers off to a dream start. Nudging the ball around with minimal risk, the pair added immense scoreboard pressure to the Kingston Hawthorn attack. When Edgeworth’s (36) knock came to an end, James Nanopoulos (28) and Newman (60) accelerated past the total at almost a run a ball. At times, the left-handers played strokes
that had to be seen to be believed. Pete Cassidy and Suraj Randiv joined at the crease in a balanced situation - their scalps defining whether Dandenong would set a lead or have to bat again later in the day. But one over from Cassidy shifted the lead of Dandenong rapidly, and advanced the Panthers' position. Cassidy found the fence five times in one over, adding 20 runs to the Panthers' lead in a display of brute force and, at times, some elegance. Jacques Augustin came in for only a handful of balls, finding time to entertain with a supreme ramp shot before Tom Donnell waved his men in with a 109-run lead.

Locky Scott got that early scalp he was deprived off last week before consistent wickets fell throughout the innings. At tea, the Hawks loomed to deprive Dandenong of 10 precious points, but Gehan Seneviratne and Randiv begun to turn the ball square and ultimately run right through the Hawks. The last wicket was proving to be an elusive one, before Nanopoulos finished the job to claim his first for the afternoon. Dandenong claimed its second win for the season, maximum points, and more importantly only sit a win outside of finals contention again - a sight that would make many top eight teams squirm.

WHAT’S ON at the Dandenong Stadium
With the Lions charging in hard, Jerome Jones (41 off 24) flung the blade hard to bring the Bucks into a winning position, before Suren Ekanayake (27 not out off 14 balls) put some icing on the cake as the champs got the runs with three overs to spare. In the remaining matches, Berwick (5/106) was another side to keep its strong form going with a comfortable win over North Dandenong (105) at Lois Twohig Reserve, while Heinz Southern Districts (7/193) kept in touch with the top-four with a strong victory against St Mary’s (192).
