Path debate cranking up
By Justin Flynn Some Ocean Grove residents are concerned that they won't be able to foot the bill of City of Greater Geelong's proposed footpath network. The details of the Principal Pedestrian Network are yet to be finalised, however Council expects that affected property owners will need to help pay for some it. Another option is for all residents in Ocean Grove to help pay for the path network. Council has proposed an 11.3km or a 22.8km path network, which is estimated to cost $6.98 million and $3.3 million respectively, said Guy Wilson-Browne, City of Greater Geelong Director, City Services. Orton Street works soon Detailed designs have been finalised for the installation new traffic lights at the intersection of Orton Street and Presidents Avenue in Ocean Grove. The intersection almost claimed the life of 18-year-old motorcyclist Tyler Peace, who required multiple operations after colliding with a car in April 2018. Following extensive consultation with the local community and stakeholders throughout the year, Regional Roads Victoria has de-
veloped plans for a suite of works to improve safety at the intersection. New traffic lights will be installed to improve traffic flow and provide safer access for turning traffic while dedicated cycling lanes and improved footpath connections will boost safety for cyclists and pedestrians, the State Government said. A new raised safety platform on Orton Street will also help to physically slow vehicles approaching the intersection from the east.
The street lighting will also be upgraded to improve night time visibility at the intersection and 'keep clear' zones will be installed outside nearby driveways. At community sessions earlier this year, about 90 per cent of people who attended or provided feedback said they felt the current intersection was unsafe and reported seeing a high number of near misses. Works are expected to begin after summer
next year to limit disruption during the busy peak season. "We're taking action to boost safety for the thousands of people who rely on this intersection every day," Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville said. "New traffic lights and a raft of other improvements will not only boost safety at this intersection but will also improve accessibility for all road users travelling in Ocean Grove."

Emergency vehicles were called to attend a vehicle accident in Ocean Grove this morning. One witness said: "A car has smashed through through traffic lights on Tuckfield St, smashed through the footy club fence on Marlin Drive, driven across the oval and tried to smash through the fence on the other side but hit the light pole power box." "30 minutes earlier and my kids would have been on the oval as the school uses it for playlunch." A female driver aged 86 is believed to have suffered a medical problem at a set of traffic lights. An air ambulance took the driver to hospital where she was in a critical condition.

Drive, said. "If you go past and ask all of those people in this street if they want the footpath to be put in at that price and do they have the money for it in this climate with power and gas going up, the last of my concerns is the footpath. "If the majority say they want the footpaths and everyone has to pay for it, then so be it, but it's potentially thousands of dollars." City of Grater Geelong mayor, Stephanie Asher, who lives in Ocean Grove, said the issue was "challenging". "The issue of footpaths in old Ocean Grove is a challenging one for the council because we've been left with the historic legacy of developers not being required to put them in at the time the town was built," she said. "We're now in a situation where some members of the community don't want them, while others both want them and in fact really need them to be able to get around safely. And of course we also have the debate about where they should be built and how they should be funded. "The current survey process gives us the opportunity to collect important feedback from affected property owners. Clearly there

"Given this cost, the only way for the City of Greater Geelong to fit the project within its budget is to fund it via a Special Charge Scheme where residents contribute to part of the total cost," Mr Wilson-Browne said. Mr Wilson-Browne said an online survey (geelongaustralia.com.au/yoursay) was available for affected residents to have their say. "It asks for feedback on which of the two design options are preferred, and on which funding model is preferred," he said. "It also gives the option for property owners to say they do not want the project to go ahead at all." Thacker Street resident Joanne Eaton told the Voice that her rates were already high and that extra money to pay for the footpaths would make it more difficult to make ends meet. "I have friends interstate and other parts of Victoria and they are all gobsmacked that we have to pay for a footpath," Ms Eaton said. "All their councils have covered it themselves." "It's ludicrous," Phil Browning, who lives on the corner of Thacker Street and Blue Waters

Traders happy with party By Justin Flynn Ocean Grove came alive with festive cheer for the fourth annual Christmas in the Grove street party. The Terrace was closed to vehicles for Ocean Grove Business Association's gala street festival, which showcases local traders and encourages people to shop locally. Held on the same day as Kingston Village celebrated its official opening, Christmas in the Grove was another resounding success. "Kingston did have their first opening day the same day, they were unable to change the date, but it didn't seem to affect the numbers attending Christmas in the Grove," an OGBA spokesperson said. "Ocean Grove locals are wonderful at showing their support to our local businesses, they know how to shop local. "The event was entirely run by volunteers from the Ocean Grove Business Association." Earlier in the day, the weather looked it wasn't going to cooperate with rains and cold conditions for the Kingston Village opening. But the skies cleared and the sun shone by the time The Terrace was closed off just before 5pm on Wednesday 4 December. Businesses spilled out onto the street as a festive atmosphere took over with young and old enjoying the food, drink and wares on offer. "The response from the businesses in The Terrace has been positive," the OGBA spokesperson said. "It's not always a great trading night for all stores but it helps advertise all our family owned, independent businesses. "The Christmas in the Grove evening reminds locals how wonderful our vibrant shopping strip is. "Some retailers don't open but hopefully when they hear what a wonderful evening we

Saints marching in By Justin Flynn Unseasonably cold early-summer weather did nothing to dampen the spirits of St Kilda Football Club as players and staff spent time on the Bellarine as part of a preseason training camp. The Saints stayed at Barwon Heads Resort at 13th Beach and used two Ocean Grove gyms for the camp. "It's good to get away from our normal training base and have a different environment," rehabilitation manager Marcus Krygger said. "We chose down here because we were hoping for good weather and be able to use the beach, but unfortunately we weren't able to get that. "There's so much to do down here, we went to the water park, the boys have spent some time playing golf and we were still able to get two quality football sessions in. "The two gyms we've been using have been fantastic." All 45 listed players and around 30 staff spent a week on the Bellarine. Second-year defender Callum Wilkie played all 22 games for St Kilda this season after being selected in last year's rookie draft as a matureaged recruit. The 23-year-old was an accountant in Adelaide before getting his chance in the AFL. "It was an amazing experience last year - I didn't expect everything to happen like that," Wilkie told the Voice. "With Robbo (Dylan Roberton) going down, it left a hole for me, which was unlucky for him and bad for the team but obviously I got the opportunity to play and get that experience." Wilkie said the Bellarine was the terrific spot for a preseason training camp. "It's really nice, I've been down here a few times with the missus so it's good to get down here with the boys," he said.

A self-confessed 'yogi hack' Rache's teaching career spans over 16 years, both in Australia and overseas and her book 'So, A Year in Yoga' contains 52 stories, one for every week of the calendar. "I started speaking my stories 10 years ago while teaching yoga classes," Rache said. "This was before yoga was a 'thing' and when mindfulness was still something only for witches and hippies." About seven years ago, Rache's students encouraged her to collate her stories into a book. Rache said the response to the book had been "overwhelmingly amazing". "I've been humbled by how the words have touched so many people," she said. "I spend about two hours a week tapping on the keyboard or scribbling on post-it-notes around the house." Rache said the process was "exciting in a weird way". "Also excruciatingly uncomfortable. To put yourself out there is hard. Pressing send on the final draft took two weeks of procrastination and tea drinking," she said. 'So A Year in Yoga' is available at Barwon Heads Yoga, Bookgrove, One thousand and one things, Rasta Surf Co, High Tide Yoga and Movement and barwonheadsyoga.com.au.

Apartment block rejected Council's Planning Committee has knocked back an application for a three-story apartment complex in Ocean Grove, which had drawn objections from local residents. The proposal would have seen 23 apartments built in an established residential area on the north-east corner of The Avenue and Hodgson Street. The application received 23 written objections, with concerns centred on the size and bulk of the proposed building, the impact on neighbourhood character, potential traffic and parking congestion, and the prospect of neighbouring properties being overlooked and overshadowed. Residents had also expressed concern that the building could set a precedent for future developments in an area not traditionally known for high density living. Efforts to reach a compromise had been unsuccessful, with a consultation meeting between the objectors and the applicant on 14 August failing to result in any changes to the application or any objections being withdrawn. The Planning Committee made up of seven councillors and chaired by Cr Trent Sullivan, voted in favour of a recommendation moved by Cr Jim Mason and seconded by Mayor Stephanie Asher to reject the permit application.
The decision was made on several grounds, including that the scale and density of the proposed development was not appropriate given its location. "Although this site is within the Ocean Grove Increased Housing Diversity Area, the size and density of this proposal is too much of a shift away from the traditional character of the neighbourhood," Mayor Asher said. "Neighbours' concerns that they would be overshadowed and overlooked by this large building are well founded. An argument could be made that apartments are appropriate for this site, but a smaller scale development would seem a better fit and have less impact on surrounding properties." "We accept that slowing the outwards growth of our Bellarine towns means there's a need for increased housing diversity within the existing boundaries, but the rate of change is important," Councillor Mason said. "This building is simply too much of a departure from the surrounding homes and would completely change the look and feel of the area. "I believe the application is barely compliant and we should not be testing boundaries of regulation, especially during the consideration of our Distinctive Landscape." oceangrovevoice.com.au

The dangerous practice of jumping or diving into the Barwon River at Barwon Heads from the jetty and the bridge is something that has resulted in serious injury in previous summers. There is constantly changing sand level buildup of the river bed around the jetty and the bridge that can result in critically shallow water depths. Please share this message with your family and friends.

Dumped household rubbish on the Bellarine Peninsula.
Geoff's picture of a pelican at Ocean Grove boat ramp.
A whole load of rubbish It's been a relatively cool start to summer, but the farm fields are drying out already. I haven't had much time to get out and about with Christmas cheer in full swing. However when I have had time to look around the Bellarine I've been terribly frustrated by rubbish.
I have a favourite spot in Curlewis, which is a relatively quiet place on a dirt road. Because it's quiet it seems to be a great place for people to leave their household rubbish. Over the last few months there's been kitchen cupboards, exercise bikes, burnt out cars, plastic bags full of garden refuse, old toysjust trailer loads of discarded household waste. I've been driving through Point Henry on my way to work and the water in the water channels by the side of Point Henry road is black because of the rubbish that's been dumped into it. There are old car tyres, plastic bags full of waste and the road is damaged due to the burn out marks, paper and plastic bags
blowing in the wind. I ventured to Lake Connewarre on the way to work but went the Leopold side via Brindsmeads Lane and Mollers Lane and was so distressed by the huge pile of dumped rubbish - actually placed in the lake. Despite all of the development that is engulfing Lake Connewarre near the Barwon Heads Road, this area is the jewel of the Bellarine - it is a Ramsar protected, internationally recognised wetland of importance, and it also doubles as a rubbish dump. Walking around the litter were some beautiful birds, such as a common greenshank, whiskered terns and a few pied stilts. The common greenshank has flown here from the Northern Hemisphere just to walk
around our dumped rubbish. Honestly, there is a lack of respect and care for our precious environment and it has to stop. It's so awful. I might change the name of this column to 'dumped rubbish watch' as all the quiet places where I go to look at birds all attract dumped rubbish. Let's change this is 2020 and beyond and develop some respect, care and responsibility. On a happier note, Geoff sent me a photo of a majestic pelican perched on the light pole at the Ocean Grove boat ramp. Thanks so much Geoff. Merry Christmas to all.

A landmark agreement By Cr Trent Sullivan
Cruising for Everyne Commute in Comfort Family Adventures Visit Melbourne Geelong is live
In case you haven't heard the fantastic news, kerbside recycling is back after all five G21 councils, including the City of Greater Geelong, signed a landmark agreement with Cleanaway. The waste management company is processing the region's yellow lid bin recyclables, including paper, glass, metals and plastics. It's been a frustrating time since the SKM recycling facility in South Geelong closed in July, but I thank the community for its patience and for dropping off recyclables to the Drysdale and North Geelong recovery centres. This contract has been several months in the making and will no doubt offer relief to residents. The next step is working together to avoid contaminated recycling going to landfill. There have been a few minor changes as to what can and can't go in the yellow lid bin, which I'll take you through.
Cleanaway is accepting clean rigid plastic bottles and containers, so long as they're labelled 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Lids need to be taken off these bottles, as well glass bottles and jars, and popped into the bin separately. All food containers also need a quick rinse to avoid contamination. Here's a handy tip: If you give a plastic item a squeeze and it goes back to its original shape, it's a rigid plastic and is safe to put in your recycle bin. Milk cartons and other coated cardboard cartons are no longer accepted. The return of kerbside recycling is a medium-term solution and we're still looking for 'clever and creative' ideas that will create a sustainable system in the long-term. The state government's Circular Economy Policy will be released in the near future, which will give us direction as we develop those longterm solutions.
OGSLSC PROFILE Name: Darryl Beales How many years have you been on a volunteer surf patrol lifesaver for? About 10 years. What did you want to become volunteer surf lifesaver? Well, I guess began my surf life saving career probably at about 10 years of age. I always wanted to do my bronze medallion in the surf, but I was living in Lara and I couldn't get anyone to take me to the beach and then I joined up with my children doing Nippers and from there I started coaching and then progressed. What is your favourite thing about being on a volunteer surf patrol at the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club? Well it is probably the safest beach in I think in Victoria. The people that come down here are so diverse, you are always surprised with the people you have a chat to on the beach. There is never anything the same week after week. Do have any superstitions before you complete a shift as surf patrol lifesaver? The main thing I do religiously is check the weather conditions when the tides are coming in and everything and if there is any lightning around. What is your favourite beach? Definitely Ocean Grove beach, it is clean, it is nice, it's safe, it has everything, it really does. Favourite holiday destination? Ho Tram, Vietnam.

THE VOICE GUIDE TO ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT
End of line for rockin’ five By Justin Flynn
Brian Mannix will team up with Nick Barker, JR Reyne, Scott Darlow and Bernard Curry for ''End of the Line''. famous in the 1980s. He has performed on stage, has written three books, written and directed numerous plays, came fifth in Dancing With the Stars and
is currently finishing off an audio book. So what's next? "I might do a movie," he laughs. "I don't have enough money to do a good
one, it would be more like 'oh god you've got to see this'. "Sort of along the lines of Sharknado I reckon."
12436129-CG52-19
Melbourne born rocker Brian Mannix is headed to Geelong with a Traveling Wilburys tribute titled 'End of the Line'. The Traveling Wilburys were a super group made up of Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, and George Harrison and the locally made tribute features an impressive ensemble cast. Mannix, Nick Barker, JR Reyne, Scott Darlow and Bernard Curry will take to Geelong Arts Centre in February to tell the story of the Traveling Wilburys supergroup that featured Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, and George Harrison. "We're an eclectic little bunch," Mannix says. "Nick Barker is rocking as hell, Scott is a little operatic although I haven't met him yet, JR Reyne, he's gorgeous really isn't he, and Brendan is Stephen Curry's brother and doing well." Mannix has performed in Geelong "stacks of times" and hopes the audience will enjoy "really great music and a really entertaining show". The group has had just the one rehearsal so far. "I know what songs are in the show now so I'll go away and learn the songs," he says. "We have a few weeks to learn the songs by ourselves and then come together and start putting it all together." Mannix describes the show as a "half theatre, half concert sort of thing". "It's a documentary meets concert and I reckon people will have a good time and learn a little bit and have a bit of a rock on," he says. Mannix is keeping busy and still performs with The Uncanny X-Men, which made him

The team keeps a broad range of products at very competitive prices. Our motto is: "Live healthier! Live longer!" This month we celebrate the fact that Direct Chemist Outlet Ocean Grove, in the Marketplace shopping centre, has been open 15 years. "I want to take the time to thank all of the staff who work here for their hard work and willingness to help other people," owner and manager Matt Pittwood says. "We have three staff members who have been working here since 2004 who have clocked up 15 years' service." "Carole Garra, Bernie Peterson and Ann Rantall, it is particularly amazing to see how many people they know and connect with in the local area. "Having staff who have been performing their roles in such a fantastic way for such a long period of time and still continue to do so has been a fantastic asset and resource for the business and I am sure that customers will continue to see their friendly faces and benefit from their knowledge for many more years to come." Matt Pittwood also owns St Leonards pharmacy and is a consultant pharmacist, so outside of the pharmacy, he does home medication reviews and volunteers to do cardiac medication talks for Bellarine Community Health's Cardiac rehabilitation course. Ocean Grove Supertoys has been part of the local shopping landscape for more than two decades. Owner Kerrie partly attributes the success of the long-standing business to the support shown by the locals. "Strong support from the local community enables us to offer competitive pricing across our vast range of products," she says. "We are never going to be able to compete with the big department stores, but at the end of the day we are not trying to. "Price is important, but we offer a holistic shopping experience from the complimentary gift wrapping to our friendly experienced advice or suggestions." While Supertoys offers the popular brands such as Lego, Hot Wheels, Sylvanian Families, Wahu etc, these brands are complemented by a huge selection of games, puzzles, dress-ups, wooden toys, craft and science based activities, and selected gifts for children. Supertoys is certainly well stocked. Kerrie says most of their Christmas stock has arrived, and it is a battle at the moment to fit all the choices on the shelves. Greengrocer a massive hit

Barwon Heads Greengrocer is well and truly open. The team at Ocean Grove Fruit Crew are excited to give the people of Barwon Heads a genuine greengrocer option. On Bridge Road, near the roundabout, Barwon Heads Greengrocer has the full Mexican and juice bar menu just like Ocean Grove Fruit Crew, but also does coffee (from Micro Coffee Roasters in Torquay). There's a gluten-free grocery range now in both stores and organic and conventional fruit and veg. Barwon Heads Greengrocer is open seven days a week and has a picturesque outdoor seating area out the front. The Gregorys jumped at the chance to take over the spot in Barwon Heads to open up their greengrocer shop.
They are well known in Ocean Grove, running the popular Ocean Grove Fruit Crew, known for its fresh fruit and veg. The local and family owned business at Park Lane in the Grove has the largest range of fresh organic produce in the region. As certified organic farmers themselves, the Gregorys know a thing or two about organic fruit and veg. Darren and Carolyn Gregory have an organic farm at Connewarre and use as much of the produce from there as they can. The organic section is proving to be popular with locals who want fresh organic produce. The organic section is seriously impressive and is growing all the time. Ocean Grove Fruit Crew has eliminated the use of disposal plastic bags and waste has been halved.

Thousands flock to beach By Mark Heenan A few thousand people packed Ocean Grove main beach for the season opening Life Saving Victoria state junior and surf carnivals. Big surf and challenging conditions confronted Nippers from across the state on the first Saturday of summer. Around 120-plus Ocean Grove SLSC juniors took part in the home state carnival. Ocean Grove SLSC junior activities manager Darren Ball spoke proudly of local Nippers. "The first carnival for the season, the first Nipper carnival (Grove) for two years and some very trying conditions," Ball said in a club statement. "It was tough out there, but everyone had a crack and it was fantastic to see all kids still having fun and competing at their best." Fifteen OGSLSC competitors were Under 8s and competed in the first ever junior state carnival. OGSLSC won the Under 13 Aqua Cameron with Luke Bird, Will Deverall, Rauri Davison and Caden Walsh. The Under 13s saw Will Deverall finished second in the Iron and Board, while Luke Bird came second. The local quartet of Hugo Walsh, Jerry Kelly, who won the individual board, Alex Morgan

Under 12s girls Board. ON Sunday 8 December, Ocean Grove had around 70 senior competitors who competed in the opening state Senior/Youth and Rescue and Resuscitation carnival of 2019/20. Calmer conditions were on hand for senior competitors, compared with heavy surf a day earlier.
Highlights included Ocean Grove's first place with the Under 17s Womens Ski Relay team of Lexie McNaughton, Taia Young and Jemima Asher. Tim Hannan, Lestyn Knapp and Drew Honey won the Under 17s Mens Ski Relay event.

Grubbers firing on the pitch Ocean Grove senior women's cricket team has continued its amazing ride in their first ever season of competitive cricket. The Grubbers occupied top spot in the nine-team Geelong Cricket Association Women's T20 South competition after four rounds. The local women's team recorded a hattrick of victories over Leopold in Round 2 and Round 4 and Torquay Gold in Round 3. Ocean Grove (24 points) sat above secondplaced St Joseph's (24 points) and Torquay Black (24 points) in third spot on a superior percentage. Ocean Grove had the bye in Round 1. THE club's Round 4 T20 clash at Ray Menzies Memorial Oval at Shell Road on Sunday 8 December saw Leopold win the toss and bat first. Grubber Jasmin Thomas took 2/6 from two
overs, while Andrea Frankpitt (1/11), Bernadette Giblin (1/16), Jackie Montgomery (1/4) and captain Jacque Johnston (1/2) claimed one wicket. The visitors were all out for 77 from 19.4 overs. "We have some ripping girls in the side, it has been good so far," said Ocean Grove women's cricketer Jackie Montgomery. IN reply Ocean Grove was 0/78 won by 10 wickets with nine overs to spare after reaching the victory target in 11 overs in 20 overs per side match. Grubber Tanya Taylor was the top scorer (30 retired), while captain Jacque Johnston the next best (16 retired). OCEAN Grove played away to Torquay Black in their Round 5 T20 clash at Quay Reserve on Sunday 15 December.
The Grubbers have hit the track and commenced their pre-season training under new senior coach Pete Davey. Ocean Grove senior and reserves footballers began their pre-season this month on 2 December. Preseason training occurs twice a week on Mondays at Devlins Road Oval at Oakdene and Wednesdays at Shell Road at Ray Menzies Memorial Oval in December. The Voice was on hand to capture photos from the club's third pre-season training session on 9 December. Davey said the pre-season training focus was winning contested ball and to build a strong fitness running base under new head of fitness and well-being manager Dean Casamento. “Our emphasis is on winning the contested balls and a lot of our training has been (and will continue to be) about being hard at the contest and putting our head over the footy,” Davey told the Voice. “At the moment we’re looking to cover around 21 kilometres in a week, so we monitor their running each session to make sure we’re hitting those incremental targets each night.” The new senior coach confirmed the Grubbers had invested in 'youth' following their Under 19 Division Two premiership triumph in 2019 rather than fill a big shopping list of new recruits. “We want to build success that is sustainable,” said Davey, who coached Bacchus Marsh in the Ballarat Football League in 2019. “Our aim is to get the club back to playing finals football every year then competing in and winning grand finals on a regular basis and we believe we have a group of young men who will get us there.” IN player arrivals former Newtown and

OCEAN Grove concludes its pre-season training prior to the Christmas break on 18 December before it resumes on Wednesday 15 January. IN other developments, Ocean Grove opens its 2020 campaign with two twilight matches with a home clash under lights against Newcomb in Round 1 and a Good Friday twilight clash against Torquay at Spring Creek Reserve at McCartney Oval in Round 2. The Grubbers play Battle of the Bridge clashes against 2019 premiers Barwon Heads in Round 7 and Round 14, while Ocean Grove hosts Geelong Amateur on Anzac Day in Round 4.
Grove netballers indoors for preseason By Mark Heenan Ocean Grove senior netballers have taken a different approach to commence preseason training. Rather than toiling away in the hot sun at the Shell Road netball courts, the Grubbers were hard at work at SCY 247 Training gym in Ocean Grove in December as part of their preseason program. "We have moved into to do some strength and cardio sessions with Bridget at SCY 247 in Sinclair Street in the industrial estate," new senior netball coach Nikki Cooke told the Voice. "Bridget has been past sponsor and a longoceangrovevoice.com.au
time supporter of the club and she is the owner of the gym. "So she was keen and happy to be involved in our preseason and the girls will work on their strength and cardio during that time." THE 2019 season was one of the most successful years in Ocean Grove senior netball history. All 12 Saturday teams including six senior sides with A, B, C, D and E Grades and the 19/ Under team made Bellarine Football Netball League finals this year. Cooke, who was appointed as Grubber senior netball coach in November, had been im-
pressed with the senior turnout at preseason training and its fitness standards. "We have had great numbers at our trainings," Cooke said. "Anywhere between 25 and 36 are the numbers at training. "The numbers for preseason have been fabulous. "Overall, I am happy with the standard of where we are at so far." Grubber netballers including Claudia Britt and Emily Moroney had some fun at the club's preseason training. Picture: OGFNC Wednesday, 18 December, 2019

Jye’s six, Coutas on top By Mark Heenan Star bowler Jye Hearps wound back the clock to produce a six-wicket haul on day one of Collendina's Round 8 A1 clash against Queenscliff. The veteran pace bowler finished with 6/74 from 28 overs and took his 2019/20 wicket tally to 12 at 21.67. It was Hearps' best return with the ball this season. "I will feel it (the next day)," said Hearps, who took the key wickets of Toby Smith (18) and Queenscliff captain Shane Healey (5). Young star Sam Beasley took 2/42 from 12 overs, while spinner Jacob Gasior claimed 1/24 from 13. Queenscliff took day one honours, though, all out for 263. Couta Tim Frankenburg (52) top scored for the visitors, while Richard McCann (43), opener Michael Farrell (35) and Lachie Kidd (24) made handy contributions. Light rain saw players leave field on several occasions before the tea break. Collendina requires 264 runs from 75 overs this Saturday for victory. IN other matches, Cobra Dean Britt top scored with 82 in his side's innings of 9/271 against Wallington in C1. BARRABOOL won its Round 7 A1 Grade clash against Collendina by 100 runs after the Bulls sparked a late order Cobra collapse. "Was (a) disappointing (result), but (we had a) pretty inexperienced side and another specialist batsman would have been handy," said
Collendina's Ben Ricardo. The Cobras were without star youngster Max Sutton and batting all-rounder Nathan Walter, who scored more than 500 runs last season and hasn't played since Round 1 with a knee injury. Walter, the club's A1 captain, is likely to resume playing in the new year.
Upset loss before Christmas break for Ocean Grove Ocean Grove suffered an upset loss to Bareena in Round 10 of Geelong Bowls Region's Premier Division on Saturday. The loss sent Ocean Grove to third place on the ladder. Ben Wilding, Shane Kinraid, Jim Sullivan and Jacko Mahoney won their rink, but no other rinks emerged victorious. Ocean Grove second Premier team also suffered a loss - to Highton. Gary Burkett's rink, comprising John Gibcus, Geoff Fry and Michael Allen, was the only rink to taste success winning 28 to 21. Clifton Springs won a thriller, 102 to 96, against Ocean Grove in Division 2. Warren Davis, Brendan Carroll, Rodney Swan and Andrew Wright enjoyed a 25 to 16 win. It was a different story in Division 3 with Grove defeating Belmont, 92 shots to 81. David Stonehouse, David Mackay, Barry Hair and Marianne Rogan had a 28 to 18 rink win to help their side keep top spot on the ladder. Ocean Grove defeated Torquay in Division 5. The bottom placed Torquay took it right up to the third-placed Grove. Grove prevailed 100 to 83 with Thomas Henderson skipping his rink of Faye Bowyer, Anne Way and Phillip Lock to a 23 to 13 triumph. Ocean Grove defeated top side Geelong Ce-

ment in Division 6. The win put the Grovers into fourth spot with a two-game buffer from three other sides. Greg Carbines skipped his rink of Douglas Wignall, Bryan Olsen and Robin Brache to a 29 to 16 win in the overall 97 to 85 victory. Ocean Grove sits second on the Division 8 ladder after disposing of St Leonards, 84 to 51. Graeme constable, Bob Nicol, Ian Walker and Marene Turnley had the closest win out of the three rinks, 21 to 19. Ocean Grove lost its Division 10 match against Barwon Heads by four shots. Both rinks had tight tussles with the Heads
prevailing in both by one shot against Lorraine Delaney's rink and three shots against Peter Callander's. IN MIDWEEK bowls, Ocean Grove defeated St Leonards in Division 1. Faye Richardson skipped her rink of David Rudge, Marg Carroll and Rod Brehaut to a good win to keep top spot on the ladder. In Division 2, Grove 2 defeated Torquay and Grove 3 lost to Geelong. Grove 2 sits on top of the ladder while Ocean Grove 3 is on the bottom. However, Grove 3 took it right up to Geelong and only went down by six shots with Marlene
Sutton guiding her rink to a 31 to 15 win. Grove 2 got the job done by three shots with Pat Virtue's rink on top. Lara and Ocean Grove fought out a thrilling tie in Division 3. Both sides won, lost and tied a rink with Grove's Lyn Stonehouse, Douglas Gorwell, Nancy Quinton and David Stonehouse coming out on top. Grove lost its Division 5 match to Anglesea with Kerrin Simpson skipping her rink to the only win of the game. Queenscliff proved too good for Grove in Division 7.
First innings points already in the bag as Port skittled By Mark Heenan Ocean Grove A1 claimed first innings points on day one against bottom placed Portarlington. Ocean Grove ripped through Portarlington's for 100. At stumps, the Grubbers were 3/103 from 26 overs. Dylan Thorley was the chief destroyer with his best ever A1 bowling figures taking 6/36 from 10.1 overs. Thorley is Ocean Grove's leading wicket taker with 14 this season. "He (Thorley) has certainly come a long way with his bowling in a short time," Ocean Grove captain-coach Paul Jubber said. "He bowled terrific lines and he just took the pace off the ball and made them force the play and force the issue a little bit." Left-armer Dan Roddis who celebrated his 30 VOICE

birthday on Saturday, finished with 2/28 from 11 overs, while Lindon Giuffrida took 2/13 from 12. Ned Thorley bowled economically with five maidens, his six overs cost him only one run. Portarlington's Dean Deluca top scored with 40. Jubber said earning six points on day one meant there was a live chance to claim a rare outright 10-point result on Saturday 21 December. "The game is there now to get hopefully outright points, we will be doing all we can do next Saturday in that situation - that will be the plan," he said. The early day one victory saw the Grubbers jump from fourth to second place with 33 points after the club's loss to Barwon Heads in Round 7. IN other matches, Ocean Grove B1 needs a
further 94 runs with eight wickets left for victory against Portarlington in their two-day clash at Shell Road, the Grubbers require a further 184 runs with nine wickets remaining for the win against Winchelsea in C1, while Ocean Grove defeated Little River by 66 runs in their D Grade one-day competition clash. AN unbroken 68-run eighth wicket stand between teenager Campbell Snookes and Brock Close guided Barwon Heads A1 to a three-wicket Round 7 victory over Ocean Grove. Snookes, 14, was on 50 and Close 41 at the close of play Resuming at 0/17 on day two and chasing 181, the Seagulls fell in a heap at 6/67 as Ocean Grove crushed the top order. Barwon Heads A1 captain Sam Schaller said a seventh wicket 56-run stand between Snookes and Kristian Hopwood proved crucial
which rescued the run chase. "I think even the seventh wicket firstly between Kristian, in only his second A Grade match, and Cam, also in his second match, was just as important," Schaller told the Voice. "Coming together at 6 for 60 odd with a bit of carnage going on they got together and really gave us an opportunity." Barwon Heads finished the match at 7/191 from 61 overs. Dylan Thorley was the pick of the Grubber bowlers with 3/28 from while captain-coach Paul Jubber claimed 2/20. Left-arm pace bowler Dan Roddis claimed the prized scalp of Sam Schaller for 7, while dangerous Seagull batsman Lewy Hyland did not play. oceangrovevoice.com.au

Four decades for big race By Mark Heenan Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club president Chris Paterson said this month's RT Edgar Rip to River Classic 40th anniversary is a wonderful community club milestone. The surf club's biggest annual fundraiser on Saturday 28 December at Ocean Grove main beach, is arguably one of Australia's longest and most iconic fun runs. "As one of the oldest runs in the country and our major fundraiser for 40 years - this is a fantastic milestone for the club," Mr Paterson told the Voice. "One thing that hasn't changed is the enjoyment I think everybody gets from running or walking along one of the most stunning pieces of coast in the region. oceangrovevoice.com.au
"It's a great way to show your support of the club (with partners RT Edgar and AWA Alliance with our) community organisation and emergency service." Mr Paterson confirmed the transformation from analogue to digital times was a big addition during the last four decades of the prestigious local community event. "From the old days of the analogue stopwatch that we used to have to ferry down the beach from the start to the finish, before the first runner to the restructuring of the course (which) now finish(es) back at the Ocean Grove main beach," he said. The 10km run/walk, which begins at 7.30am and 7am, starts near Point Lonsdale Lighthouse and takes competitors along the
pristine sands to the mouth of Barwon River then back to OGSLSC. The 5km run starts at 7am and the 1.4km 'Ripper Nipper' ages 7-13 begins at 7.30am and start and finish at Ocean Grove main beach. Funds from the RT Edgar 40th Rip to River Classic fundraiser will help fit out of the new OGSLSC facilities and purchase vital lifesaving equipment. Entries can be done via registernow.com. au/secure/Register.aspx?E=36528, while competitors can collect their race bibs and complete registrations on Friday 27 December between 4pm and 7pm at OGSLSC. LOCAL Ocean Grove runner Nick Wightman was crowned a six-time winner at last summer's 10km Rip to River Classic in 33:26.
