Roo left for dead By Brendan Rees Disturbing photos have emerged of a severely injured kangaroo after it was struck by an arrow in Lysterfield Park and left for dead. Wildlife rescuers found the kangaroo, nicknamed Frank, with a wound under his chin and an arrow pierced through his leg near the Lysterfield Lake yacht club after a passer-by raised the alarm. Local wildlife rescuer Sue Johnston, who was part of a team that came to the roo's aid about 1pm on Saturday 11 January, said she immediately gave a prescribed sedative to the marsupial. "Seeing his neck it was like something from a horror movie, it was terrible," she said. Ms Johnston and two other rescuers Paul Jones and Sarah Cooke rushed Frank to Woofpurnay Veterinary Hospital in Narre Warren North where the arrow was removed. "The vet thinks he might have sustained a knife injury on the neck ... which is very concerning," Ms Johnston said, adding the wound was about 8cm long and 2cm deep. "I see many bad things with kangaroo injuries but this at a whole other level," she said. "The vet actually sedated him more and gave him gas ... he was in a lot of pain; wringling and rising in pain on the table, it was very sad to see. "Luckily the wound is quite clean where the arrow went in," she said. "He's got a chance hopefully." Ms Johnston reported the incident to police and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning. "Seeing something like this ... it's premeditated and an aggressive sort of attack; very concerning for me being a wildlife shelter and especially in my backyard," she said. Ms Johnston said another arrow had been found in Lysterfield South about a week earlier which had been passed onto police. Frank is now recovering in the last available enclosure at the Five Freedoms Animal Rescue shelter in the Macedon Ranges. Five Freedoms Animal Rescue Facebook

"While our wildlife are suffering horrendously through the devastating fires in Victoria, some sick and cruel bastard has added to the pain," the rescue group wrote. "Unfortunately, our animals continue to suffer in many ways and not just from the fires, and our work continues, and this beautiful big boy needs our help" it added. The group also called for tighter controls over weapons as illegal shooting of kangaroos

Pictures: FACEBOOK with arrows was not uncommon. In a Facebook post, Federal MP for La Trobe Jason Wood said he was shocked by the incident and had called for stronger penalties for those that committed animal cruelty. "This shouldn't be happening to our wildlife, I have been able to put on the COAG (Council of Australian Governments) agenda meeting of Environmental Ministers to have nationally stronger penalties for those who inflict cruelty on our wildlife, we are now just waiting for final agreement," Mr Wood posted.

Planning shake-up By Brendan Rees Casey councillors will no longer determine planning matters as they give up their rights to vote on planning applications in the wake of the IBAC corruption investigations. At an extraordinary special meeting on New Year's eve, councillors voted to establish a new Special Planning Committee and therefore relinquish their planning decision rights. It comes as the IBAC Operation Sandon inquiry alleged dirty deals at Casey Council in relation to planning and property development decisions. The Special Committee will include two independent members whose appointments will be considered at council's meeting on 21 January. However, councillors voted to have Cr Rex Flannery as the only councillor to act as council's delegate on the committee. Only seven of the 11 elected councillors attended the meeting as it seeks to "provide community assurance in the integrity of decision making". Mayor Susan Serey said the Special Committee, which would be established under the Local Government Act 1989, will have delegated decision-making authority under the Planning and Environment Act to deal with about four per cent of planning applications. The majority of other planning applications will continue to be decided by council officers under delegated authority. "It will not replace our role as councillors or take away the community's voice," she said. "This enables council to fulfil its obligations as a responsible authority in a timely fashion, protects applicant and objector rights and protects the integrity of decisions being made whilst the IBAC investigations are underway. "Residents will still be able to approach their ward councillors or Cr Flannery should

they have concerns around specific planning applications, which will be provided to the Special Committee. The right to object to VCAT for applicants and objectors means no one's voice or rights are silenced. "We need to ensure that we are meeting our obligations around planning applications being considered in a timely matter and are being processed in the quickest possible way, which the Special Committee will allow us to do," Cr Serey said. It is anticipated that the Special Committee will meet monthly, starting in February 2020. Meetings of the Special Committee would be open to the public. Cr Rosalie Crestani was the only councillor who opposed the new committee. "I believe all elected leaders have a right to speak as representatives for the people and my heart is to avoid causing offence in doing so," Cr Crestani said in a Facebook post. Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association spokesman Brendan Browne said the Special Committee was a "poor substitute for a properly functioning council." "We now have an absurd situation where public confidence is so low, that council is voting to remove 10 Councillors from planning decisions," he said. "At the same time they are trying to convince us that they are doing their jobs. "The only workable solution is for the State Government to dismiss the Council. We need administrators to start cleaning up the mess as soon as possible," Mr Browne said. A spokeswoman of the Save the Casey Foothills Association, Rosalie Counsell, said council's motion to surrender councillors' right to vote on planning applications was "far from ideal". "Who proposed a takeover in the first place?

And why did Casey's governance department recommend forming a committee with no details regarding size, make up, qualifications, transparency, powers, financial arrangements, checks and balances, or community input ramifications," she said. "The blatancy of this suspect move serves only to illustrate the urgency of government intervention," she said. Casey ratepayer Rita Menheere said the new committee had all the "hallmarks of a process designed to pull the wool over our eyes and keep control of the corrupted planning process." "We have to call it out ... the majority of wayward councillors get to decide everything about this committee, and can abandon it at any time if its members start making 'unwanted' decisions," she said. Meanwhile, Casey's manager of governance Holly De Kretser confirmed an incident whereby faeces had been mailed to one councillor. Cr Sam Aziz's whereabouts is also still unknown. He flew to Egypt late last year prior to the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission hearings being held which alleged Cr Aziz pocketed $900,000 from property developers. Cr Aziz and Cr Geoff Ablett currently remain elected councillors and continue to receive a councillor allowance. Ms De Kretser said the approved leave of absence for Cr Aziz and Cr Ablett ended on 31 December and the next opportunity for the pair to apply for further leave will be at council's meeting on 21 January. IBAC public hearings into allegations of serious corrupt conduct in relation to planning and property development decisions at the City of Casey council will restart on Monday 2 March.

The man was interviewed for lighting a fire in a campsite to cook a meal during a period of total fire ban in Paradise Beach and interviewed by police on Saturday 4 January. On Friday 10 January, a 70-year-old Longford woman was also interviewed for lighting a fire in a paddock to burn rubbish during a period of total fire ban in Longford. Under the CFA Act 1958, it is an offence to light a fire during a total fire ban day without a permit. Penalties for lighting a fire on a total fire ban include maximum 2 years jail or a large fine.

Speed played part in crash Police are appealing for any witnesses or dashcam footage following a collision in Lynbrook on Saturday 11 January. Police believe a Nissan X- Trail with Western Australian plates had been travelling south along South Gippsland Highway from the Dandenong Bypass when it collided with a blue Toyota Corolla about 7.15 am on the South Gippsland Highway and Lynbrook Boulevard. "It is believed the vehicle was being driven erratically and possibly at speed when it collided," a Victoria Police spokesperson said. An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said a man in his 30s was treated for pelvic and foot injuries and taken to the Aflred Hospital in a stable condition while a woman in her 40s was treated for upper body injuries and taken to the Alfred Hospital in a stable condition. ‘Low-key gangs’ hit region By Brendan Rees Crime in Casey has jumped with theft, breaches of orders and assaults topping the list of offences, latest crime statistics have revealed. The number of recorded offences in City of Casey was up 10.8 per cent compared to the previous year, according to new figures released by the Crime Statistics Agency. On the rise were robberies (up 41 per cent), deceptions (43.5 per cent), and drug use and possession (20.5 per cent). There were just over 21 thefts that occurred per day on average for the year ending 30 September. However there was a drop in burglaries (down 4.7 per cent). Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton said the rates of youth crime was "very concerning"

with a spike in robbery offences involving "low key gang groups" in the southern metropolitan area including Casey and Cardinia. "It's a range of things - there are some small gangs, small groups of youth who we actively target and we know who they are in terms of persons of interest," he said. "We are finding that the youth of today are being more brazen and are doing things that we hadn't seen 10 years ago," DC Patton said. "In addition to that there's a lot of random offending occurs where we couldn't possibly anticipate who they are but it's just youth on youth. "We know that during periods of holidays that we see youth out and about and making bad decisions.

"I think it's really important to be aware of your surroundings when you're using your phone so that people can't take those opportunities to snatch them and things like that," DC Patton said. Gembrook state Liberal MP Brad Battin said: "Since Daniel Andrews has been in Government crime has continued to soar in Casey with a shocking 10.8 per cent increase in just 12 months. "The community have called for a new Police Station in Clyde, and Labor has failed to provide $1 towards the construction of this new needed police station," he said. Across the state the number of criminal incidents increased by 3.7 per cent with Police Minister Lisa Neville saying youth crime had "gone up slightly".

"Overall our young people are fantastic but those who committing crimes area are escalating quickly and they're doing a lot of crime; a lot of recidivism that is in this group," she said. Ms Neville said the State Government had recruited the "biggest increase in Victoria Police numbers in its history" which were supported by an additional 120 youth specialist officers. Crime Statistics Agency chief statistician Fiona Dowsley said that "the number of alleged offenders processed by Victoria Police has been increasing over the last several years. Since the year ending September 2015 the number of alleged offender incidents recorded has increased 14.5 per cent."

Drivers feel pain at bowsers By Brendan Rees Motorists are feeling the pain as fuel prices across Casey top $1.75 a litre - hitting a threemonth high. "The average price for a litre of unleaded across Melbourne today is just under $1.65, but the majority of retailers are selling at $1.60. Cheaper petrol is available, as low as $1.31, but motorists will need to search to find it," RACV spokesperson Brodie Bott said. "Sometimes the best way for motorists to avoid petrol price pain is to shop around; use a price comparison app or website to find the best deal. If you're heading away check the prices along the way, sometimes the best deals are found on your route or in regional centres outside of Melbourne." According to website Petrol Spy the price for regular unleaded fuel in Cranbourne, Berwick, Lyndhurst, Hampton Park and Devon

Meadows is between $1.41 and $175.9 cents a litre. CommSec's senior economist Ryan Felsman said rising international crude oil prices was likely to increase pump prices. "Automotive fuel prices have already lifted by around 5.5 per cent in the December quarter and are expected to show up in the inflation data scheduled for release on January 29," he said. "A combination of the ending of the current retail petrol price discounting cycle and rising international crude oil prices (Australia is a net importer of refined petroleum) are likely to push pump prices in the coming weeks," he added. Mr Felsman said drivers can shop around for the cheapest fuel by downloading apps on their smart phones - such as MotorMouth and RACV.

Drivers are paying as much as $1.75 a litre for unleaded fuel.

Is faith more important than science in Casey? Can you please explain why Casey council does not have a climate change committee to deal with the biggest threat facing all residents in this municipality? As you know, the recent bush fires have caused chaos and hardship for thousands of residents and animals in East Gippsland. Last year Victorian had its driest and hottest period on record. Meteorologists are forecasting that droughts and extreme weather events will present very serious risks to all Victorians and municipalities in future. But although Casey council has many committees including a Casey Demons Board, a John Pandazopoulos committee, and a Multi-

Faith committee - Casey Council has no designated climate change committee. Why? Last year Casey council lobbied the State Government for more infrastructure funding and recycling and public transport capacity but council has had little to say about what State and Federal Governments should be funding to protect Casey residents- living in a designated high risk zone from a far bigger threat to our quality of life climate change. Why? Is it because Casey council is in denial about climate change or does council believe that faith is more important than science? I call on the mayor and deputy mayor of Casey to now take a stand a set up a climate change committee ASAP. John Glazebrook Endeavour Hills

SOCIALLY SPEAKING On Tuesday 14 January, a story was shared to the Berwick Star News Facebook page about a mother who waited for seven hours at Casey Hospital after experiencing a miscarriage, only to be told to go home. Here's how our readers responded online: Jodie Maree: By far the worst hospital I've ever been too!! The wait times are bs, and the doctors brush you off! I won't go there now, I'll drive and hour to go to west gippy. Tracy Anne Johnson: It's disgusting, there should be more support, more concern for baby and parents. What a horrible experience. If a mother to be presents herself in emergency with pains in stomach then action should be made asap a separate room for them to sit. It's a very upsetting time. Marianne Mez: This happens at nearly ever hospital to be honest. Private and public. Carlos Mauricio Senel Moreno: That happened to my wife at the dandy hospital 2 years ago. Waited for two hours sitting in plastic chair pretty much baby was lost waiting until a bed become available apparently. It was the most painful experience by far. Disappointed how they treat women there and nothing I could do about it, Melissa Rana: Better to go by ambulance if in a lot pain. Abbi Mae: Not just Casey hospital! It happened to me twice at the William Angliss hospital in Ferntree Gully with my 1st pregnancy and 5th. Nicole Hamilton: It happens in a lot of hospitals I myself had in happen in a Sydney hospital. A road safety program will be delivered directly to schools in the Casey community.

Casey Safety Village to close From the 2021 school year, the children's road safety program currently delivered at the Casey Safety Village will become an outreach program going directly into local schools. Following a service review of the program, Council resolved at the meeting on 3 December to close the Casey Safety Village, which has operated from its location in the Casey Complex since 2006. The program will continue from the current location for the next 12 months as it transitions to a new delivery model which will service Casey's 79 schools with about 5,000 prep students. The new program will be tailored to each school and include: production of a local Walk to School/Active Travel map and information Prep class Walk and Talk sessions on being a safe pedestrian around schools Prep/parent education sessions with the school crossing supervisor and Lottie (the school crossing Mascot) review of parking signage and school crossings. Casey mayor Susan Serey said the Casey Safety Village currently contains the Casey Road Safety Education Centre (CRSEC) and the CFA Learning Centre, which have delivered combined road and fire safety educational

programs to the community, primarily kindergartens and schools. "While the program attracts around 10,000 children each year, around 60 per cent of users are from outside the City of Casey. As the facility receives no other government funding, the cost of the service is being born by Casey ratepayers," Cr Serey said. In order to remain financially viable into the future, Cr Serey said significant expansion of the facility would need to occur. However, its location in the Casey Sports Complex, which is also the site for the proposed East Cranbourne railway station, meant this will not be possible. "The decision has therefore been taken to close the facility and transition to a schoolbased model that will be delivered directly to local schools. "Council remains committed to improving road safety for children, and resources will be redirected to developing the program during 2020 for commencement in first term 2021. We are in the process of contact all our local schools to inform them of this change and to inform them of the new opportunities that will be available for their students," she said. The CFA was engaged in the service review process and council will work with them to determine their future plans for the relocatable buildings they currently have at the site.

When seven-year-old Chanelle of Cranbourne saw the devastation of the bushfires on TV she knew she wanted to make a difference. So she went to her bedroom and began making rainbow lume bracelets to help raise money to support families involved in the fires as well as wildlife shelters. "Chanelle was in her room last Thursday making looms bands and my husband asked what she was doing," proud mum Danielle Frazer said. "Chanelle said 'I'm making loom bands to help the people who have lost their houses.' "As her parents we just had to support this act of kindness. We posted on Facebook and with support from family and friends she has raised $450." Ms Frazer said their minds were blown by the generosity of people. Chanelle will donate half of the funds to FoodBank and World Wide Fund for Nature. This season's bushfires have been unprecedented in scale and is having a devastating impact on native wildlife and biodiversity. Mobile Wildlife Triage Units are now in place at Bairnsdale, Mallacoota and Corryong along with Wildlife Assessment Teams working on fire grounds based out of Bairnsdale, Orbost and the Budj Bim fire complex. The State Government is providing immediate support for wildlife shelters and foster carers to help cover the costs of food, transport, medicine and enclosures as animals are rescued from bushfire affected areas. Grants of up to $1,000 are now available

A carrot inspires story By Brendan Rees Healthy eating is at the centre of Pastor Kerrigan La-Brooy's new children's book, 'Caro the talking carrot meets Wilma the worm'. Mr La-Brooy, a Senior Pastor of Gethsemane Church in Cranbourne, who was recently presented the Leadership Award at the 2019 Victorian Premiers Volunteer Champions, says his book will instil a sense of "belief and guidance" in children during impressionable years when faced with body image issues. "The character is instantly endearing," Mr La-Brooy explained. "The storyline is informative and educational with a conscious emphasis on children's health and well-being while simultaneously capturing the imagination of the child and bringing light-hearted entertainment to even the adult reader. "With today's strong awareness directed at body image and the perception that to be beautiful you have to be slim, which sadly results in young ones succumbing to peer pressure even to the extent of starving their way to acceptance, this series makes a subtle difference," he said. Mr La-Brooy said the book was published through his own publishing company, 'Kerrigan Publishing' founded in early 2008. He had initially signed with a US based company but had to withdraw his contract due to a "major postal oversight". The story follows Caro 'the talking carrot' who reveals from the opening lines that 'being too skinny is not a good thing.' "It distracts from the common cliche and establishes that the main character does not have to be slim and tall or even good looking. If children are encouraged to adapt to the character and hopefully fall in love with Caro, it will at the very least, inspire them to take pleasure in their vegetables," Mr La-Brooy said.

Mr La-Brooy's new book. "We as adults can teach them, albeit at an early age, the importance of healthy eating and dismiss the misconception that being slim is essentially all that matters," he added. Mr La-Brooy teamed up with an illustrator from Canada named Izabela Ciesinska, said all proceeds from the sales of the book will go towards Gethsemane Church and Charity. Mr La-Brooy was also invited to the Monash Children's Hospital in collaboration with Starlight Foundation on Author's Day to read his book and also to sing and play his guitar. The book costs $20 which Mr La-Brooy says "is a lifetime gift to give any child." To order copies of the book contact the author on 0404 875 647.

Kerrigan La-Brooy is excited to launch his new children’s book, ‘Caro the talking carrot meets Wilma the worm’.

Mother-to-be turned away By Brendan Rees The family of expectant mother who was in pain and waited hours at Casey Hospital - only to be told to go home due to it being "totally full" - are fuming. Vanessa Haddad said she sat by her sisterin-law - who asked to withhold her name - in the emergency department of the hospital in Berwick for seven hours to see a doctor on 15 December. "The hospital was chockers; there were parents out in the corridor sitting with their children even on the floor," Ms Haddad said. "No one was moving; no one was moving in or out really." Ms Haddad said her sister-in-law had experienced a miscarriage and was hoping to get a prescription for her pain but waited between 7.30pm and 2.30am. "We did tell them our concerns that night ... she had a heaving feeling on her chest, she found it hard breathing and stuff like that. They weren't too concerned with her at all when triage saw her they told her to go back out to the waiting room," she said. At one point, Ms Haddad said her sister-inlaw "just looked at me and goes 'I just can't wait any more here.' She became very nervous like agitated a bit. "One of the doctors came out about two o'clock in the morning and said: 'Look, I hate to tell everybody but you need to go and find somewhere else or see your GP in the morning. We're totally full. We can't take any more patients ... there's only three doctors in rotation,' she said. Ms Haddad said their family were devastated by the ordeal. "They had already named the child; they told their three younger children ... the kids were very upset when they found out," she said.

A woman who experienced a miscarriage had to wait seven hours at Casey Hospital to see a doctor - only to be told to go home. Ms Haddad said she didn't blame the hospital staff but said the public hospital system was "unbelievably failing" due to a staff shortage. A Monash Health spokesperson said all its emergency department patients were seen in order of clinical urgency and apologised "for any distress experienced by our patients." Shadow Health Minister Georgie Crozier said hospital wait times had "blown out" under Daniel Andrews, putting "enormous pressure" on hospitals and placing the lives of patients at risk. "Daniel Andrews' mismanagement of the state budget is having real and tragic conse-

quences for Victorian patients," she said. Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said the government realised "there are times" when waiting in an emergency department could be stressful for patients and their families. "We are delivering record funding to each and every hospital in Victoria for doctors and nurses to care for record numbers of patients and we are getting on with completing the massive $135 million expansion of Casey Hospital," she said. "We won't be lectured to by Georgie Crozier and the Liberals, who delivered nothing for patients in Casey and continue to stand-by while their mates in Canberra rip $305 million out

of our hospitals for services our doctors and nurses have already delivered." Gembrook state Liberal MP Brad Battin has called on the State Government to investigate the incident involving Ms Haddad's sister-inlaw to "ensure it never happens again and give confidence to the community in the health system." Casey Hospital's redevelopment is reaching the final stages of construction and will consist of 128 new inpatient beds and the hospital's first intensive care unit in the new clinical tower, as well as six new operating theatres, a new day surgery unit, along with an upgraded pharmacy, pathology, back-of-house areas and expanded parking facilities.

Stadium opens doors to help break down barriers Casey Stadium continues to break barriers for access and inclusion through recent implementation of an 'Access Key'. The City of Casey facility provides a range of inclusive and services, with the Access Key providing a valuable support for those accessing the Centre. Alongside the YMCA Victoria and ONE Casey, AccessAbilityAustralia (AAA) have developed an Access Key which provides critical orientation, structural and sensory information about the facility to prepare people prior to visiting. Available on both Casey Stadium and AAA websites, the Access Key compliments the accessible programs and facilities. Access Keys are customised accessibility guides that provide convenient and accurate information about venues or events. They

Director and Co-Founder of AccessAbilityAustralia Maxine Parker said, "the symbolism of Access Keys for facilities that open their doors to all people in the community can help break down stereotypes and build stronger culture, stronger communities and safer places to live". Casey Stadium is a state-of-the-art facility that has recently undergone a major redevelopment and now features 10 multipurpose indoor courts including a 1500 seat show court, 5 indoor cricket/soccer courts and a dedicated gymnastics area. The stadium prides itself on being acces-

sible to all people with a variety of programs available for children, those with a disability and the ageing population. "The implementation of the access key compliments our programs perfectly," Casey Stadium's Program and Inclusion Coordinator Matt De Poilly said. "We are keen to get the local community aware of the programs and facilities available and access key will help us to achieve this." There are a variety of all ability programs available for both children and adults, such as the Casey Sports Zone program, multi-sport program designed to introduce participants to a range of sports, athletics and movement activities. Multiple programs such as specialised all abilities MiniRoos soccer and Cricket Blast programs will be launching in 2020.

Gardening guru to speak By Mitchell Clarke Gardening guru and author Gabrielle (Gay) Baldwin is set to make her way out to Cranbourne where she'll present at the Auditorium in the Royal Botanic Gardens on Sunday 9 February. Ms Baldwin will speak about the experiences she learnt while compiling her book 'Things my garden taught me'. The memoir, records her 25-year project to establish a bush garden on what had been pas-

ture land in Yanakie, South Gippsland. The book describes experiences of successes and failures, pleasures and frustrations, but beyond that, it explores the learnings of Ms Baldwin, not just about gardening, but about many aspects of life. "For instance, gardening has shown me the need to find an appropriate balance between what can be controlled and what cannot - and an acceptance of this, even when it involves disappointment and sadness," she said. "I have learned that decay is essential to

the cycles of life, with obvious implications for thinking about death. "At a more down-to-earth level, I have found satisfaction in conquering the fear of snakes and discovering that hard physical work can be empowering for women." The "enlightening" event is open to all but is suited especially towards people starting to develop their garden. Bookings are essential. To book, visit www. rbgfriendscranbourne.org.au.

Author Gay Baldwin will recounts her personal experiences in developing her garden.

BERWICK

Berwick’s belter By Nick Creely Berwick's intensity from the opening bounce until the final siren simply can't be matched. Their premiership victory against Narre Warren on Saturday - giving the club back-toback flags for just the second time in club history - was intense, finals footy laced with the right amount of class. After a third premiership in four years, the word 'dynasty' is deservingly being bandied around, and for good reason.

The club has a stranglehold over the southeast region - they're relentless, driven by success and are always chasing their next challenge. It's the cornerstone of all successful sporting clubs. While the weather may have been arctic in their 51-point win over Narre Warren, the Wickers put in a magical performance befitting of a champion team in the midst of a golden era. From the superstar Travis Tuck, who came to the club with a high expectation that has

now culminated with a best on ground medal in a grand final, to their champion skipper Madi Andrews, dynamic forward Harry Money, gun midfielder Bryce Rutherford and reliable defenders Jo West and Michael Riseley, the Wickers possess remarkable star power. "We pride ourselves on our relentless approach," Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman said in the aftermath of another premiership win. And as for Kemperman, he couldn't have a dreamt of a start to his senior coaching career

The foundations are set, and as the club embarks on a new era in AFL Outer East, it seems the Wickers show no signs of slowing down. Talent runs deep for Jono By Nick Creely Now that Jonathan D'Rozario has had a taste of wearing the Victorian colours against the very best young talent Australia has to offer, all he wants is more. More improvement with his batting and bowling, more camaraderie with his teammates, and more opportunity to showcase exactly what he's capable of at the elite level. The 18-year-old Monash Tigers all-rounder and Buckley Ridges product has plenty of tricks up his sleeve, and after a successful Under 19 National Championships carnival with Vic Country just prior to the Christmas break, D'Rozario is hoping that can translate into club cricket and beyond for the remainder of the season. "It (the National Championships) was an amazing experience, I couldn't have asked for it to be any better, or any worse," he said. "Getting to play on the WACA in the end, and being able to learn and play against great players, the facilities, the coaches, it was all second to none. "The coaches were always talking to me about improving my game, just those little things that I can take and bring back to club cricket and hopefully it can help me progress my game." D'Rozario's carnival was strong, notching up scores of 38 and 40 throughout, before a sparkling 50 on the WACA in the final against NSW Metro almost helped Vic Country clinch the title. "I wanted to just go out there and enjoy the experience, and play hard cricket - that's the way I play, and I felt like I played my role," he said. "There were some limited opportunities at times, but as soon as I got the ball in my hand, or had the stick in the middle-order I was trying to get us over the line, and that's what I based myself off. "I felt like I played a big role in a few of those games, but if you looked through a few of the players coming through the ranks, I like to look at myself like a Michael Bevan, he was able to finish off through the middle, which I unfortunately wasn't able to do, but I still felt I played a role while it would have been nice to help us over the line on a few occasions." With the ball, the youngster was just as vital, snaring six wickets at 23.3 and providing excellent spin coverage through the middle overs. "We had a very strong spin attack, so I knew it'd be competitive getting overs in, but when I did get the chance it was about getting wickets, and if not, being economical, which I think as a spin group we did really well," he said. "It was terrific being involved with the spin group." At club land for the Tigers in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition, D'Rozario has shown glimpses of his glittering talent in the first portion of the season with scores of 44, 79 and 60 in the middle-overs, while also contributing some handy wickets. But, the ambitious talent wants more. He wants to hopefully break in for a first XI debut for the end of the season, and help the team -

Jonathan D'Rozario (left), with Monash Tigers teammate and fellow Dandenong District product, Yash Pednekar. and club - win games of cricket. "Hopefully I can carry on some momentum from the first half of the season, I got a few scores here and there, but I want more consistency with the bat and to take more wickets with the ball, and I just want to try and con-

tribute the best I can for the team," he said. "If I'm contributing to winning games for Richmond, I feel like I'm doing my part." The Tigers have enjoyed a stellar 2019/20 in terms of development, with teenager Jake

Fraser-McGurk making his Shield debut for Victoria, quick Mitch Perry making his oneday debut for Victoria, while in total, seven youngsters represented the club at the Under 19 National Championships, including fellow Dandenong District prodigy Yash Pednekar. "There's no luck about that - the way Youngy (coach Shannon Young) is bringing us all through, his coaching program and the way he goes about it is unbelievable," he said. "From the first day we walked through the door at TNF cricket in Oakleigh, we all got to know each other and we could feel something special brewing." But home is where the heart is. D'Rozario moved to Buckley Ridges - the little club on Pultney Street that is a powerhouse in the DDCA - from Lynbrook when he was 14, finishing off his junior career at the Bucks, a place where his dad, Shane is revered as one of the club's greatest cricketers, and one of four to have won a Wookey Medal as the champion player in Turf 1. And what was even more memorable, the father and son even starred together in a Turf 3 flag for the club in 2016, with Shane belting 74, and Jono snaring 5/56. They even put on a vital 50-run stand that helped sway the game into Buckley's hands. Those memories of his dad's glory days at the Bucks are ones he'll never forget, and always hold dear to him. "Huge. Absolutely huge," he said of his dad's influence. "We watch cricket every day around the house, and I think Mum and my sister probably get fed up with it, but we're all the time talking about it, in the car on the way home from training, it's like having another coach 24/7. "And I was there at every Turf 1 game, always in the nets - he'd always bat down the order. I love hearing the stories about how he and Paul Rudd would come in at seven and eight and somehow save a Turf 1 game, it's brilliant. "He bowled offies, and I'm always asking about how he used to work out batsmen, but I remember him to be one of the better DDCA players going around. "The old man is very special." And as for the club itself, D'Rozario couldn't have higher praise for the current Turf 1 champions, who have got a blend of star players, both home grown and from overseas. "I'm around the club as much as I can, and every person around the club, whether it's in the ones with DJ Watson, has been brilliant in trying to build great cricketers and help other people," he said. "That's the most important part of the club. "Even all the imports that have come through, Luke Fletcher, Dave White at the moment, and getting a chance to talk to those people, give you a chance to keep learning, and it's brilliant they're able to help me out, and help all the cricketers at different levels coming through the ranks. Swans are undone by Russ brilliance By Nick Creely Casey-South Melbourne suffered an untimely loss to Footscray on Saturday in Victorian Premier Cricket as it looks to keep pace with the top-eight. In a 32-per over match reduced off the back of rain the previous day, the Dogs had a bat first after play finally got underway at 1.30pm, and it was spearhead and milestone man Nathan Lambden (2/37) who broke through off the first ball of the game. Lambden - playing his 100th first XI match at Premier level - removed dangerous opener Dan Sartori, but the Dogs, one of the most potent batting groups in the competition, quickly went on the rebuild through stars Dean Russ and Travis Dean. Combining rock-solid defense with still a mind firmly fixed on keeping the scoreboard berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

ticking along, the pair added 87 before Jordan Hammond (1/33) managed to snare Dean for 38, another prized scalp in a promising start to his career at the level. Despite the Swans - largely through the spin of Luke Wells (3/26) who continued his strong form with the ball in hand - finding regular wickets, the Dogs got itself into a strong position for the win, finishing 7/171 with Russ' 67 providing plenty of headaches for the visitors. Needing close to a run-a-ball in the chase, the Swans got off to a bright start through Luke Wells (23) and Nathan Freitag (36), but the required run rate and the strangling effort with the ball provided by Russ (4/24) - who backed up his starring effort with the bat - saw the Swans rolled for 153 with seven balls to spare. Despite the Swans managing to string together some small partnerships, with Joel Mitchell (22), Chris Benedek (22) and Jordan

Wyatt (13) looking threatening before getting out, the Dogs just had the answers and the momentum on their side. With 11 points separating the Swans from eighth position, the group will be needing a victory against the struggling Monash Tigers on Saturday to stay in touch with the finals race. But there could be plenty of reinforcements if the Swans elect to shake up the side ahead of Saturday, with the seconds enjoying a dominant win against the Dogs at Casey Fields. In particular, important all-rounder Lachie Sperling (50 and 2/11) could be finally set to make his return after a slower than anticipated return from injury, talented opener Ash Chandrasinghe is banging down the door for a debut after notching up 44 not out, while spinners Jonah Serong and Ashvin Adihetty could help bolster the spin department if needed.

17. WHAT type of flag signifies the end of a motor race?

Down at Lois Twohig Reserve, Buckley Ridges dominated its clash with North Dandenong. Batting first, the champs lost veteran batsman Paul Rudd in the opening over, caught behind off impressive seamer Nimesh Kariyawasam (2/43). But it brought together the might of Daniel Watson, returning from a hamstring strain, and skipper David White, who continues to dispatch DDCA bowlers at every turn. Pairing up for a brutal 154-run stand, the Maroons finally brought an end to the dominance, with Watson - on 93 - looking to clear the mid-wicket boundary but instead finding Syed Shah who held on to an outstanding catch in the ring. The skipper White - who made scores of 80 and 99 prior to Christmas to continue another golden season in Australia - held his nerve to build a partnership with Susa Pradeep, who immediately got busy to push the ball into the gaps. White looked an almost certainty to register his first century of the season, skipping through the 80s with two enormous sixes off consecutive balls down the ground, and with just six left for the three figures, the South African looked to bring up the milestone in style. But instead, White holed out to the longoff boundary to continue a rare run without a ton despite another dominant season, with a 1000-run season well and truly in the cards after skipping past 600 for the year. The Maroons rallied late to hold the Bucks back somewhat, with the visitors still reaching an incredibly imposing 7/270 off its 40 overs. It appeared that the Maroons' batting innings would be over swiftly after the Bucks teared through the top-order to leave them 5/46, but the home side showed fight through the talented Clay McCartney, who belted 69 as the home side crawled to 164. At Arch Brown Reserve, Berwick and Narre South played out an utterly fascinating lastover thriller, but Matt Chasemore's Bears got the points in the end. It was an even battle between bat and ball with the Bears winning the toss and electing to bat, registering 7/176 off its 40 overs, with allrounder Ruwantha Kellepotha (46) and Matt Robertson (48) combining beautifully through the middle to set up the total. In reply, in-form opener Morteza Ali threatened to take the game away in one foul swoop to race to 36 off 39 balls, but his wicket - courtesy of James Wilcock (2/33) - got the Bears going. With the game in the balance, Ashan Wijayakumara held firm on one end with the blade, but the Bears managed a steady flow of wickets, with the scalps of dangerous duo Jonty Jenner and Scott Phillips putting the home side into the box seat. Bringing the game down to the final over,

with 11 runs needed and with the ball in the hands of Jarrod Goodes (3/27), the veteran managed to snare the final two wickets and deliver a thrilling eight-run win to the home side. Springvale South was another side that escaped with a last-over win, holding off a brave Heinz Southern Districts at Reedy Recreation Reserve. Skipper Ateeq Javid (65) once again led the way to compile yet another half-century as the Bloods recovered from a middle-order collapse to post 7/176, a strong total on the pitch. While the great Craig Slocombe (2/32) did some fine work early to help put the Cobras in a tough position at 4/84, the home side managed to scramble a vital partnership through skipper Kaushalaya Weeraratne (43) and Chandima Abeykoon (36). With just 15 runs needed from the final three overs, the Bloods dug deep, somehow restricting the Cobras to 8/171, just five runs shy of victory. In the remaining match, Hallam Kalora Park (4/175) managed to keep itself within touch of a finals position after a comfortable win against St Marys (7/174) at Carroll Reserve. In Turf 2, Dingley are continuing to show it's a class above with bat, ball and in the field after completely dismantling Cranbourne and moving 12 points clear on top of the table. The Dingoes showed little mercy to the Eagles at Souter Oval on Saturday in the first round after Christmas, winning by a whopping 144 runs in a 40-over match. The home side didn't have it all their own with the bat after winning the toss, and were at one stage 2/13 before recovering nicely to finish 8/183 off its 40 overs, with the impressive Flynn McGaw scoring a vital 34 in the middle-order. The momentum carried through from a terrific late surge with the bat for the Dingoes, who were merciless as they rolled the Eagles for a meek 29 in just over an hour. And the dominance came through Milan Rathnayaka (7/18), who bowled magically in one of the great spells of the season, and partnered with Calvin Barlow (3/8), gave the visitors little chance of mounting a case for victory. Down at Perc Allison Oval, Beaconsfield banked a vital win in its finals aspirations against Narre North. The Tigers showed great intent with the ball to roll the Rams for just 99, with Jason Dodd (3/17) and skipper Jack Benbow (3/21) doing some great work through the middle period to cause plenty of problems for the visitors. A strong 65-run opening stand from Brendan Johnson (52 not out) and Callan Tout (25) stole the game away from the Rams, with the home side getting the job done with eight wickets still left in the shed. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Panthers fall short again By Tyler Lewis and Nick Creely VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET ROUND 10 It was another painful defeat for Dandenong as it fell millimetres from victory in its first encounter after Christmas on the weekend. In its match on Saturday against FitzroyDoncaster, the Panthers were sent in on a slow green track in overcast conditions. After losing openers Brett Forsyth (10) caught behind and skipper Tom Donnell (7) leg before, the Panthers were in need of a rebuild. Ed Newman and Cam Forsyth slowly but surely resurrected the innings before Newman was victim of the sensational arm of Victorian Premier Cricket champion Peter Dickson. With a consistent fall of wickets inside the first 15 overs, Forsyth combined with James Nanopoulos to build a competitive total. When Nanopoulos rocked back and pumped a short ball to the fence only metres off the ground; the games trajectory, as it has seemed all season, was in his hands. After the slow start, the Panthers had clawed back into the contest through Forsyth (25) and Nanopoulos (30) who pushed the total to 3/89 without risk at the half-way point. Shortly after the drinks break was the passage of 10 overs that cost the Panthers dearly, losing the set Forsyth and Nanopoulos before the reliable Comrey Edgeworth also found himself in the shed, as Dandenong lost 3/4. A fighting performance with the bat from Jacques Augustin against his old side and Pete Cassidy nudged the Panthers to 144, short of the mark the Panthers would have wanted at drinks, but something for the bowlers to work with. The Christmas break proved to have no impact on Nanopoulos as he continued on his merry way with the ball, claiming three of the first four wickets to equal the Dandenong Cricket Club record of 313 victims. The Lions coasted along ticking over the run rate until Pete Cassidy gave his side a sniff, snagging two wickets in one over to inject some life into the Panthers. Unfortunately for Dandenong, the season of heartbreaking losses continues into the New Year as the Lions hung on to a two-wicket

victory - the third defeat of the season by two wickets or less. Close losses have seemed to be the story of the season, and skipper Tom Donnell said his side has often been on the good side of the close matches and understands they need to be better if they want to win games in tight moments. "It is frustrating, there have been a few games we thought could have gone either way," he said. "We just haven't been good enough, or haven't had luck, we just haven't been able to win. "This year it seems we haven't had our luck but that is the way cricket goes, when games are close you need a bit of luck and we haven't had that this year but we haven't played well enough to be honest. "We just need to improve and play the key

Vinu Mohotty was the pick of the bowlers for the Eagles to snare 2/20 and continue his brilliant season. MORNINGTON PENINSULA - PENINSULA DIVISION ROUND 9 (DAY ONE) The struggling Pearcedale faces an uphill battle to avoid another tough loss, this time to Heatherhill at home on Saturday. The Hills were sent in, and despite the early wicket of the dangerous Steven O'Donnell, belted its way to 5/250 off 65 overs before declaring, with skipper Sam Mullavey smashing his way to a maiden century for the club. Kristian Miller also struck 52 to be a menace for the home side. With just an hour to survive, the Panthers lost three wickets to be 3/26 and will need to do a lot right to stay in the contest when play resumes on Saturday.

moments a bit better." Dandenong will face Ringwood at Shepley Oval this weekend in another one day match. VICTORIAN SUB-DISTRICT - NORTH/WEST ROUND 9 Endeavour Hills battled hard on Saturday, but ultimately fell fighting to Melton at Syd Pargeter Reserve. Batting first after being sent in, the Eagles scrambled to 170 off 44.3 overs, with keeper batsman Manav Malik (25) top-scoring as the home side struggled to cash in on a series of starts through the middle order. The home side looked the goods early with the ball to snare a wicket, but the visitors - off the back of an unbeaten 52 to skipper Nathan Taylor and a strong hand from Matthew Stead (40) - found the runs with four wickets and overs still in the bank.

Lynne Wood won her first singles club championship in 2015 and since then she just kept on winning. In fact, her husband Graeme will have to build on an extra room to hold all her trophies. This year in the final Lynne was up against a talented new bowler, Liz Doidge who will gain a lot of experience playing against the region's best ladies bowler, but the game was one sided from beginning to end with Lynne crowned ladies club champion for the sixth time in a row, after the success of 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and now 2020. Lynne also continues her great form playing in the number one open side on both Saturday and mid-week competitions for Cranbourne as well as playing in State competition events and surely is one of the best female athletes in the greater Casey region. Meanwhile as club members return from the holiday break, club chief John McKenna and his committee have arranged a special bowls day to be held on Saturday 18 January to support bowls clubs that have been affected by the recent bushfires with all proceeds to be raised on the day to be presented to these clubs.
