Hearts wide open By Brendan Rees They are survivors of war ... so when they heard about the devastation of the bushfires it struck a chord with the ethnic Hazara community. Regardless of their visa status, they opened their hearts to raise money for bushfire affected communities. Some are refugees, Hazara Australian citizens and asylum seekers - but all were united to give back to a country "that provided us shelter and protection." On Thursday 16 January, during a packed gathering at Doveton Hall, the Hazara community presented an honorary cheque of $22,543.44 to the Country Fire Authority and a further cheque of $133,477.56 to the Gippsland Emergency Relief fund. The gathering was attended by political dignitaries including City of Casey and Greater Dandenong councillors as well as the State Minister for Small Businesses, Innovation and Trade, Aden Somyurek and CFA District 8 operations manager Jamie Hansen. The donations were raised through campaigns and events organised by community delegates from across Victoria. The Hazaras, who are native to the Hazarajat region in central Afghanistan, have fled war and understand the pain of facing destruction,

poverty and losing loved ones, president of the United Cultural Support Inc, Sadia Ali said. "We have come from a country that has been ravaged by war," she explained. "As a result, we understand the pain of our brothers and sisters in the bushfire ravaged communities who have lost their homes, businesses and livestock to the fire across the country. "Our country Australia is hit by one of the most devastating bushfire. We stand in solidarity with our brave firefighters and affected communities to help support them rebuild and recover loss of precious native wildlife. "We offer our condolences and sympathies with the families and friends during the bushfire crisis," she said. Ms Ali added: "After fleeing war and persecution from Afghanistan and Pakistan, Australia became home for Hazara Community." Members of the Hazara community have signed up for blood donations with Red Cross Australia and Hazara construction companies have offered their support to help rebuild homes and infrastructures in eastern affected regions. The Hazara Community will be collaborating with wider communities in organising a multicultural food and music festival to raise funds to reserve the state's wildlife.

Increase in theft, violence

Peter battles petrol price pain Petrol price rises, like death and taxes, have become a certainty in life. And it's a certainty that medical courier Peter Wickman is sick of having to live with. Mr Wickman travels all over Victoria for work and said he has noticed that prices for the precious fluid are typically far higher around the intersection of Heatherton Road and Stud Road than in other parts of the state even as much as 12 cents a litre more than the Victorian average. After first noticing the higher prices around six months ago, Mr Wickman decided to start contacting petrol companies to ask for an explanation as to why petrol prices were so high - but he received mixed responses. The companies told Mr Wickman that prices are checked daily and are based on regional influences or fluctuate due to transport costs. After contacting BP, Shell and Caltex, he said he was left with the impression that "they don't care". In fact, he said BP never responded to his

messages, while Shell provided what looked like an automatically generated response. "I feel like nothing will get done, because I've been asking for as long as I've noticed and nothing has changed," he told the Journal. "Regardless of the petrol price, they're 1012 cents higher. "What is so special about the Heatherton Road-Stud Road intersection that they pay up to 12 cents a litre more than the majority of metropolitan petrol stations?" CommSec's senior economist Ryan Felsman said rising international crude oil prices were likely to increase pump prices. "Automotive fuel prices have already lifted by around 5.5 per cent in the December quarter and are expected to show up in the inflation data scheduled for release on January 29," he said. "A combination of the ending of the current retail petrol price discounting cycle and rising international crude oil prices (Australia is a net importer of refined petroleum) are likely to push pump prices in the coming weeks," he added.

Mr Felsman said drivers can shop around for the cheapest fuel by downloading apps on their smart phones - such as MotorMouth and RACV. But Mr Wickman said he believes that "something suss is going on", and that the prices were beginning to eat into his household budget. "I have to manage the best I can. Also, I don't buy local, as much as I would love to. "But when every cent counts and you're filling up two or three times a week, 12 cents a litre becomes a lot. "If I don't have petrol in the car, I don't work, which means I don't get paid." At the time of writing, website PetrolSpy listed the prices at BP, Caltex and Shell at the intersection as hovering at $1.71 for Unleaded 91 - but barely a block away Liberty was selling the same for $1.65 and just a short drive away, on the South Gippsland Highway, motorists could fill up for $1.61. BP, Caltex and Shell have been contacted for comment.

Box opens up stories of success By Danielle Kutchel Keen to combat racism and negative perceptions of refugees, Kuranda Seyit hit upon an innovative idea. While watching Goggle Box, he decided to find a way to convey refugees’ stories and experiences in their own words - and thus, Woggle Box was born. Seyit, who is director of Forum on Australia’s Islamic Relations (FAIR), said Woggle Box features short video clips of refugees telling stories of why they fled their former home and how they’ve made their new lives a success. Passers-by are invited to step inside to listen to the stories. The aim, Mr Seyit said, is to break down stereotypes about refuges, build social cohesion and address racism. The box also features games, including ‘race against racism’ that also challenge people’s perceptions of minorities. Currently Woggle Box features three religions (Judaism, Islam and Skihism), but more will be added in future, including Indigenous beliefs. Viewers can rotate through the stories presented and pick what interests them. “Celebrating the success stories of people from refugee backgrounds is important. Giving as much support as possible is incumbent on us - Australia is welcoming and supportive,” Mr Seyit said. Woggle Box will be officially launched by Dandenong mayor Jim Memeti on Tuesday

Criminal incidents in the City of Greater Dandenong increased in the third quarter of 2019, according to the latest figures released by Victoria's Crime Statistics Agency. According to the data, which was released in December, there were 14,696 criminal incidents across the local government area in the year ending September 2019. That's an increase of 5.5 per cent on the 2018 figures. Of those, 35.9 per cent resulted in charges being laid. However, 47.4 percent - or almost 7000 - of the incidents went unsolved. While the suburbs of Dandenong, Springvale, Keysborough and Dandenong North all experienced an increase in criminal incidents, in Noble Park the number of incidents actually decreased. Dandenong experienced the most criminal activity of the five suburbs, and increased from 5872 incidents in 2018 to 6087 in 2019. Springvale, Keysborough, Dandenong North and Noble Park recorded 2038, 1516, 1097 and 2094 incidents respectively. The top occurring crime was theft from a motor vehicle, with 2142 offences recorded compared to 1921 in the previous year. The number of family violence incidents also increased in the September quarter, by two percent. Figures show a rise from 2392 in 2018 to 2441 in 2019. The majority of those affected by family incidents were female - 1881 compared to 555 males, of the victims whose gender was known - and most of those affected were aged between 25 and 34 years.

15 January 1920 The way to be happy Many of us miss the joys that might be ours by keeping our eyes fixed on those of other people. No one can enjoy his own opportunities for happiness while he is envious of another's. We do not take any pleasure in our own modest house and carriage, for we long for the motor car or Victoria that someone else owns. The edge is taken off the enjoyment of our own little house because we are wanting the palatial residence of our neighbour. Life has its full measure of happiness for every one of us if we would only determine to make the very most of every opportunity that comes our way, instead of longing for the things that come our neighbour's way.

15 January 1970 Creek fence? The possibility of fencing off Dandenong Creek where it passes under Princes Hwy, south of the main shopping area will be investigated. The manager of the Dandenong Valley Authority Mr J N Mann told the Journal investigations would be made regarding the placing of a fence around the bridge and creek. "Either the authority or the County Roads Board will be responsible for a fence", Mr Mann said. Previously, it had been suggested that the area constituted a danger to young children who could fall into the creek.

A Springvale mobile needle exchange has been closed after two people were caught selling heroin on the bus last week. The Southern Healthcare Network closed Ken's Bus at the request of police who will investigate how drug dealing took place there. Operation Belgrade and Operation Minder detectives arrested five people for drug offences after a two night stakeout on the bus. Two people were later convicted for heroin trafficking. Southern Healthcare Network chief executive Ms Judith Dwyer said the network would assist the investigation. "We are deeply concerned that drug dealers may have used this health service as a setting for their illegal activities." The service, run by volunteers, provides clean needles, food, and counselling to drug addicts and the homeless.

5 years ago 12 January 2015 Council's woolly problem After being the subject of a protracted legal battle, Baa the sheep died at the ripe age of 17 where her owner desired. He owner Vu Ho had waged fights up to the highest court in the land to keep Baa in his Springvale backyard. In a sense the legal tactics against Greater Dandenong Council achieved their purpose. The sheep, ailing with multiple tumours succumbed at home as Mr Ho changed her sesame paste dressing. She'd enjoyed fish & chips and cooked vegetables in her final days. After the court action, the council had written to Mr Ho several times seeking Baa's relocation. After Baa's death, the council told the Journal it was still considering its options but has not since made another move.

NEWS

All aboard the safety train By Mitchell Clarke Train commuters in Dandenong will notice more authorised officers and staff, as Metro launches a new campaign to crack down on risky behaviour around trains. Over the last year, more than 1000 avoidable slips, trips and falls have resulted in significant delays across the line. A further 176 incidents have involved passengers forcing open train doors and risking serious injury. By launching the 'Check Yourself Around Train's campaign, Metro and the Department of Transport hope to prevent avoidable delays and protect passenger safety.

Dandenong train station. 196128 A single train being delayed by a matter of seconds can often compound the journey into several minutes longer and essentially affect the entire line, by holding up passengers on

every service to follow. Simple "behaviour changes" like standing away from the door by moving down the carriage and removing backpacks will have a "significant impact" on train punctuality, according to Metro CEO Raymond O'Flaherty. "Small changes in behaviour around trains can make a huge difference to the experience of all passengers who rely on our network every day. "We ask that people consider their own safety at all times, avoid forcing open train doors, and be courteous to fellow passengers during their journey," Mr O'Flaherty added. Department of Transport's head of services

Jeroen Weimar added: "This campaign reinforces the message that we want everyone to take extra care while travelling across our network." The campaign will also target "engaging video and audio content" to passengers' smart phone apps and web browsers as they approach stations and while they wait for trains. "We're continuing to make the important upgrades across the network to make it easier for people to catch the train and get to where they need to go," Mr Weimar added. People who hold open train doors or stop trains from moving could face fines of up to $403 for each offence.

Car seat check keeps precious cargo safe

The story of Australia Is the story of me It’s the story of you

Free, expert child car seat fittings and safety checks are coming to a location near you. It's part of the State Government's Safe Seats, Safe Kids program, which was officially launched on Thursday 16 January. Kidsafe Victoria and Neighbourhood Houses Victoria will provide free car seat fittings and safety checks in every local government area across Victoria at various locations including neighbourhood houses and community centres. At these events, professional fitters will inspect child car seats to make sure they're installed and being used correctly. Parents and carers will also be provided with information on how to check if their precious cargo is travelling safely. Around 70 percent of child car restraints are not fitted or used correctly - making injury up to seven times more likely. Kidsafe Victoria data revealed the risk of life-threatening injuries in a car accident can be four to six times greater if a child is seated in a poorly installed restraint. On average, six children under the age of 13 are killed, and around 160 are seriously injured in vehicles on Victorian roads each year. "The data tells us that kids are far more likely to be injured if they're in a poorly-installed restraint. That's why it's crucial they are in seats that are checked by the experts," said Minister for Health Jenny Mikakos. "I urge all parents and carers to take advantage of this landmark program - it will help keep kids safe and give them the important peace of mind that their children are properly secured." Parents and carers can register their interest to attend a child car seat safety check session at kidsafevic.com.au/road-safety/free-childcar-restraint-checking-program/

It’s the story of we In parts it is painful In parts it is raw In others it’s beautiful Inspiring great awe It tells of many people From far and wide And those who’ve been here Since the beginning of time It brings us together And tears us apart We all have our views So where do we start By listening to each other And sharing our part

We’re all part of the story.

Project builds happiness By Danielle Kutchel The transition to high school is often fraught with anxiety. Students worry about making friends, getting lost, navigating a hectic timetable and of course, the threat of bullying. But at the Happiness Project, there are ways of getting around these anxieties to smooth the path. Now in its third year, the Happiness Project is a three day program run by the City of Greater Dandenong Youth and Family Services team during the January school holidays. Over three days, around 20 students aged between 11 and 13 and drawn from a variety of schools across the municipality, spend time working on activities designed to build their resilience as they make the difficult transition from grade 6 to year 7. Morning information sessions cover topics such as the difference between primary and secondary school, how to build friendships and how to deal with stress in a new environment. The afternoon sessions include team building exercises delivered at Clip 'n Climb, Noble Park Aquatic Centre and Zone Bowling. The comprehensive program also includes self-reflection activities that help the participants celebrate their achievements - whether it be putting on a climbing harness, or making a new friend. Many of the students are drawn from socially isolated backgrounds, so building connections with peers is an important step. Program facilitators work alongside school wellbeing coordinators to target the students who are most in need of assistance, before connecting with them and their families and offering a place in the project. Past participants have praised the program and some even returned this year to act as informal peer leaders, greeting the new crop

of students and letting them know that high school isn't so bad after all. Lead program facilitator Jess McKenna said the program fills a gap in the community.

"It originally came about because we recognised there was a gap in the support offered for year 6 students transitioning into year 7. There wasn't anything out there that allowed

the really vulnerable children extra assistance during that time "It keeps going because there's a need for it out there."

STEM gift to chase dreams By Taylah Eastwell The dreams of some Dandenong North Primary School students to become scientists, mathematicians, engineers or tech-savvy entrepreneurs are now a closer reality, thanks to a $10,000 gift from Amazon Australia. As part of Computer Science Week last month, students across Australia participated in Hour of Code - a one-hour introduction to computer science run by participating schools, proving that anybody can learn the basis of computer science and coding. In celebration of Hour of Code, Amazon Australia held a special Camp Amazon workshop for 26 Year 5 students from Dandenong North Primary School, in order to support their skill development in the subjects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. During the camps, students learned coding skills and put these into practice with an Alexa skill session, and were also tasked with the challenge of coding their own dance party. The camp aims to introduce, inspire and encourage young Australians to pursue careers in these growing fields. This year, Amazon Australia also donated $10,000 towards the school to allow for the purchase of equipment that will further develop student skills in these areas. Operations director at Amazon Australia Craig Fuller said he looks forward to seeing the students skills develop thanks to the donation. "We recognise that the jobs of tomorrow require a strong aptitude for STEM. We see it in our growing business, and want to be part of the solution and to set up children for longterm success," Mr Fuller said. Principal of Dandenong North Primary School Kevin Mackay said he was confident the students attending the workshop will be able to share what they have learnt with the rest of the school when they return to school.

Dandenong North Primary School was presented with $10,000 from Amazon Australia for sci-tech resources. "This is the sort of opportunity that often results in the development of a life-long passion for a particular field of study," Mr Mackay said.

Home is a national arts program, curated by the City of Greater Dandenong, that provides development pathways for visual artists with an asylum seeker or refugee background. Bellydance for fun and fitness Sarayi Ioannou grew up listening to Arabic music but couldn't imagine herself belly dancing, unless she was at home by herself moving in front of the mirror. When she decided to start belly dancing lessons and told her friends their response was, "Belly dancing is not for women like us." "I chose to ignore them and I am so glad I did," Sarayi said. "After my first belly dance lesson I fell in love with the art and I never looked back. All my misconceptions faded away. The class was filled with women like myself who were supportive and in which lifelong friendships were formed. "We learnt routines in which we performed in front of an audience and we were exposed to the world of dance. I continued my journey for many years until in 2005 I opened my own studio, Sarayi Belly Dance School. "I travelled to Egypt with my dance partner (who is also my son) John for further training and we share and teach this beautiful genre with our students. We have an annual charity theatre show in which we raise money for children with cancer as well as other charities. We also perform at many public events and private functions." STAR JOURNAL 17

SPORT

Bloods send a statement By Nick Creely Now that's a statement. Springvale South's electric form continued in the Dandenong District's Turf 1 grade on Saturday, with the Bloods putting in a mighty performance against a fellow finals aspirant, Narre South. The Bloods haven't dropped a game since the opening round against Berwick, and continue to play like a side hell-bent on going a step further, and one that is still being driven by the disappointments of the previous two seasons despite a glittering of new faces throughout the side. On a tricky deck, Bloods skipper Ateeq Javid elected to bat in the one-day clash, but the overseas pro was, in a rare sight, quickly back in the sheds courtesy of seamer Tim Phillips (2/26). As per usual, the aggressive Nathan King (46) took to the Lions' new-ball bowlers, but the Lions found regular breakthroughs, removing King, and classy middle-order pair Ryan Quirk (20) and Akshay Ballal (29) for starts. In-form Lion all-rounder, Morteza Ali's (3/26) dynamic spell helped tear through the Bloods' middle order, but a crucial knock from Tim Ford (25 not out) helped lift the visitors to 9/160 off its 40 overs, setting up an intriguing chase. Little did the players, and the spectators know at the time, but Ford would carry his momentum with the bat into a match-winning bowling spell, and one of the performances of the season to date. Tearing through the Lions' top and middle orders featuring handy names such as Morteza Ali, Scott Phillips, Jonty Jenner, Ashan Wijayakumara and Matthew Brooks, Ford took the first six wickets of the chase, leaving the home side in a world of hurt at 6/42. With eight overs of immense pressure from Ford producing 6/19, the damage was well and truly done, with the Lions rolling over for 60,

Hallam Kalora Park's Kevin Kean on the attack against Buckley Ridges on Saturday. 203215 Picture: ROB CAREW with left-arm tweaker Jarryd Straker (3/10) finishing things off for the Bloods. In another statement down at Frawley Road, Hallam Kalora Park pipped the powerful Buckley Ridges in a final-ball thriller by just one-run to keep its finals hopes well and truly alive. The Hawks produced arguably its finest performance in a couple of seasons, digging deep despite David White once again dominating proceedings with the bat. Using the size of the ground to its advantage, the Hawks never allowed the Bucks to settle after winning the toss and batting, with the experience of Leigh Booth (30), Ryan Hillard (46), Jagveer Hayer (54) and skipper Ben

Hillard (21) knocking the ball around in a powerful start. With just 10 boundaries scored between the important four for the Hawks, running between the wickets became crucial against the pace of Jerome Jones (1/39), Adrian Neill (2/37) and Daniel Watson (1/26). Kevin Kean (35 off 24 balls) ensured the Hawks would set an imposing chase for the champion Bucks, reaching 5/214. The Hawks got off the perfect start with the ball, removing Daniel Watson in the opening overs, but the opposition headache that is David White continued to cause issues. The Bucks skipper - playing a more tempered innings than has been customary in his

time in the association - anchored the chase despite a steady flow of wickets falling through the middle. White - coming off consecutive scores of 80 and 95, as well as a 99 two games prior - once again loomed as the key, joining forces with all-rounder Jerome Jones at 5/138, and with a half-century already to his name. The pair slammed on 64 runs, with White finally breaking through for his first century of the season, in another dominant performance from the South African. But on 101, seamer Chris Pereira (2/44) broke through in a crucial double strike, with White holing out to the deep, before Suren Ekanayake fell first ball and giving the Hawks the upper hand with an over to spare. In a tense final over, bowled by the reliable Leigh Booth (2/41), the Bucks found bat on ball to bring it down to a simple equation off the final ball: two to win, and one to draw, with Matthew Goodwright on strike. But nailing the perfect yorker, Booth found a way to snare a wicket and claim a famous win, and one that leaves them with a sniff at finals cricket. A match-winning effort from star allrounder Ruwantha Kellepotha, meanwhile, saw Berwick recover in time to post a win against Heinz Southern Districts. After the Cobras elected to bat, the Bears were once again impressive with the ball, restricting the visitors to just 9/133 off its 40 overs, with skipper Kaushalya Weeraratne the lone hand with a stylish 47. Kellepotha (58 not out) proved the key through the middle after a slow start, with the Bears falling to 6/98, using aggression and excellent stroke making to guide the home side to victory with six overs to spare. In the final match of the round, St Mary's (7/180) knocked off North Dandenong (9/179) in another thriller, with Rob Peat starring with 51 not out and 3/32.

Modern day great sits atop a proud Dandenong list By Tyler Lewis At 3:49pm on Saturday, James Nanopoulos etched his name further into Dandenong Cricket Club folklore when he dismissed Ringwood champion David King. The all-rounder now leads the way as the Panthers' all time wicket taker, surpassing Roger Gill (313). Earlier in the day, Dandenong skipper Tom Donnell won the toss and had very little hesitation in batting first. He immediately set the tone with his Kookaburra blade, reminding some of the competitions most potent quicks that pitching it in their half will not go unpunished. Donnell's opening partner Brett Forsyth found his time in the middle a little more difficult than he, but still managed to hang around with Donnell, as the pair posted yet another partnership of over 50, their 52nd together. Donnell swiftly moved to 50, a 45th Vic Premier Cricket half-century - highlighted not only by his trademark pulls and cuts, but a lofted square drive that slapped into the pavilion. A spurt of wickets from David King before drinks, collecting Forsyth (18), Donnell (51) and Comrey Edgeworth (10) had the Rams back in the game as the Panthers were 3/91 at the half-way mark. Ed Newman sustained his rise as a genuine star this season with an impressive 45, before the Panthers hit a major halt with less than 10 overs to go. Nanopoulos, Augustin and Newman all departed in the space of two overs, without adding any runs to the scorebook - bringing back the Panthers' potential total. After a few minor cameos from Peter Cassidy and Suraj Randiv, Dandenong were dismissed for 196. After the thud of the brand new ball hitting Tom Rogers' bat then the pavilion roof inside the first over from Josh Shaw, there was a deathly silence around Shepley Oval from the 18 STAR JOURNAL

|

Peter Cassidy was at his best on the weekend, sending them down with his trademark upright seam. 203216 Dandenong faithful who came to watch a historical day. But they soon found their voice, when Randiv caught the edge of Rogers and brought the all-important partnership of King and Ian Holland to the crease. Enter James Nanopoulos. With King trying to work into the gap on the leg side, the champ miscued his stroke and found the safe hands of a diving Comrey Edgeworth at mid-wicket, cracking open the match

for the Panthers and more importantly, making the record his own. In typical Nanopoulos fashion, he wasn't finished, claiming another wicket only a number of deliveries later to send a ripple through the Rams top order. Akshat Buch got in on the action with a scalp of his own, before Cassidy snared the match defining wicket of Ian Holland, who tried to slash through the offside and could only find a thick edge that was taken astound-

New opportunity awaits By Tyler Lewis The Dandenong Stingrays are gearing up for another strong season in the NAB League. Hayden Young, Cody Weightman, Ned Cahill and Bigoa Nyuon rounded out the four Stingrays who were selected in the 2019 National Draft, but 2020 holds a unique year for the Rays with a very different draft class ahead. Stingrays coach Nick Cox said although it is a different year in the draft, it is a fresh new opportunity for the Dandenong coaches to better the new crop as players and people. "It is a bit different because of the fatherson and academy prospects and all that type of stuff," he said. "At the end of the day the good players will get through, whether it be the top 40 or best 80, our job is to get them up to speed to be able to get selected at the end of the 2020 season. "Without putting pressure on anyone, we believe we have a strong even group of players. "By all reports this year's draft is not as strong as it has been in the past few years, but who knows. "I was really pleased for Jai when I touched back base with him," Cox said. "He got an opportunity by Central, he has jumped at it. "Look Jai was one of the unlucky ones who missed a lot of footy through injury over the last couple of years, I think he still has an op-
