MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk Leaving aside for a moment the potentially differing views around solutions to our water problems - including a pipeline from Toowoomba to Warwick - it's worth reflecting on the rain we've had in recent days, and the lift this has given spirits in our region. I'd quite forgotten the simple pleasure of going to sleep listening to rain on the roof, as well as having to actually go around closing windows, not something we've had to worry about much in recent times. Parts of the region received more than just a half-decent drenching, and Warwick's Leslie Dam received an inflow, the first of any significance since late 2016. It's a reminder there will be an end in sight to this horrible drought and as much as anything the rain in the past week has given the community as a whole a vital psychological boost. It's also worth reflecting that there are children in this region who until last weekend hadn't seen a 'proper' fall of rain. Even that tends to put things into a bit of perspective. Jeremy Sollars

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…

DAM LEVELS UP, BUT LIMITS TO STAY Welcome rainfall received across the region over the past week has extended urban water supplies for Warwick and Stanthorpe but the Southern Downs Regional Council says the current 'emergency' level water restrictions will remain in place of 80 litres per person per day. Warwick's Leslie Dam received its first significant inflow since late 2016 last weekend and the council says the resultant dam level rise - to just over 8000 megalitres as of Monday of this week - means Warwick's urban supply will hold out until May next year, and that's not accounting for any further rainfall in the coming months. Connolly Dam - from which the council is currently carting water for Stanthorpe will hold out until next March. Stanthorpe's Storm King Dam on the other hand received no significant inflow so the carting system will continue indefinitely. The council had been at the point of investigating ways to draw water from Leslie Dam once it reached the 'minimum operating level', below the 'draw-down' point for the existing pumping system, including additional pipework. But it is understood investigation of bore water sources in the Warwick and surrounding areas will continue as a contingency measure for emergency water supplies for Warwick, and for Allora and Yangan which are also supplied from Warwick's reticulated network. Inflow into Spring Creek at Killarney will also reduce pressure on Killarney's offstream storage, from where the council had been drawing water for the town's use.

Leslie Dam received a much-needed inflow, starting last Friday night... In a statement released on Monday of this week the council said it was "very pleased over the recent rainfall that the Southern Downs and Granite Belt has received over the last week". "The rain has been a welcome relief and we eagerly await more," a spokeswoman said. "We are aware that the rain will generate hundreds of conversations between residents and further afield. "With that in mind, here is some information to help with those conversations.

Picture: DONNA CECIL

"As at 9am Monday 20 January, Leslie dam has received 3134ML and Storm King Dam has a recorded rise of 8ML, and Connolly Dam has received 402 ML. "Other dams within the region require manual measurements to be taken, which will be shared with the public once finalised. "It is important to note that Southern Downs Regional Council is still receiving data regarding dam levels as water continues to flow into the dams. "However, SDRC would like to provide an update of inflow to date. "Southern Downs and Granite Belt

residents are still asked to restrict their water usage to 80L per person per day until Emergency Water Restrictions are lifted. "For more information on water restrictions and what 80L can look like, please visit www.sdrc.qld.gov.au" · The announcement on Monday of this week by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk that her government will commission the construction of a pipeline from Toowoomba to Warwick theoretically means the region will be "droughtproof " but significant questions remain unanswered - more on pages 4-5 ... ●

CUNNINGHAM GAP ‘ASSESSMENT’ A ‘PRIORITY’: TMR BY JEREMY SOLLARS Calls for a permanent solution to ongoing road closures of the Cunningham Highway at Cunninghams Gap have resumed following a further closure last weekend following heavy rain in the region. Rock falls at the Gap in late 2019 and early 2020 related to bushfires resulted in repeated closures of the highway, causing major inconvenience to road users and continuing to affect businesses in the Southern Downs and Granite Belt regions. Heavy rain last Friday night, 17 January, resulted in yet another highway closure for part of last weekend. The State Government completed major

'stabilisation' works at the Gap in 2012 following rock falls between 2005 and 2010. The recent road closures have re-ignited debate about a 'permanent' Gap solution, such as a tunnel through the Main Range, a concrete 'deck' over the highway or a new road through Spicers Gap. The Free Times this week asked the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Road (TMR) for further details about steps it has taken in recent weeks to investigate stability of the cliff face at the Gap following last year's bushfires, and received the following response from a spokesman "We have been undertaking slope stabilisation works at Cunningham's Gap for

of falling, lane closures, additional safety barriers, and speed reductions. "We will continue to monitor the area and carry out additional inspections after rain events. "Preliminary investigations showed no major structural damage to the road surface or the ground beneath it. "Monitoring is on-going and detailed damage and geotechnical assessments have started. "We have engaged a consultant to assess and detail the extent of the damage as a matter of priority." No timeframe for the consultant's report was given this week. ●

many years," the spokesman said. "In particular, in response to natural disaster events including the 2013 land slip, Ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie in 2017, and the 2019 bushfires. "This is a known high rockfall area with a unique topography, therefore stabilisation works are quite complex and require detailed planning and execution. "Long term works are dependent on the completion of the full assessment of the damage including geotechnical investigations of the upslope and downslopes in the fire damaged locations. "We have undertaken emergency works along Cunningham's Gap including clearing and removal of debris and trees at high risk

the route the pipeline would take to Warwick, south from Toowoomba through Westbrook, Wyreema, Cambooya, Greenmount, Nobby, Clifton and Allora. It would then travel through Warwick from north of town, eventually linking up to the Warwick water treatment plant on Glen Road west of town. The specific details of the route through Warwick have not been released but Premier Palaszczuk and Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie said private property resumptions along the route would be "minimal" as it would "mostly" utilise existing public road reserves.

ueensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says the Queensland Government will use its fast-tracking powers to build a new water pipeline from Toowoomba to Warwick, potentially by the end of this year. The Premier visited Warwick on Monday of this week to inspect part of the route the pipeline will take through Warwick to the council's Glen Road water treatment plant. The pipeline would allow Warwick and Stanthorpe to access water long-term

from Wivenhoe Dam in Brisbane, which is connected to Toowoomba via an existing pipeline from Wivenhoe to Toowoomba's Cressbrook Dam. Late last year the Premier committed to funding a $1 million feasibility study into the pipeline. Despite a report by Wivenhoe Dam operator Seqwater on the feasibility of the project not being due to the government until April of this year, the Premier this week told the media the State Government would use its powerful Coordinator-General's authority to "get the project moving ASAP". This is also despite the project not

The Premier said she believes any affected landholders would be appropriately compensated. The State Coordinator-General - Toni Power - is a senior officer of the Queensland Department of State Development and has extensive powers to override local governments and some state regulations to push through major infrastructure projects deemed vital by the government. Cr Dobie said the Premier had inspected progress in Warwick where experts have already nominated a likely route using existing road and rail corridors". "The Premier said that meant one thing: delivering the pipeline faster," Cr Dobie said. "By using existing publicly owned land, there will be very little if any land acquisitions required thus streamlining the project. "The Premier announced a $1 million feasibility study for the project in November. "The potential pipeline would link Warwick to water from Wivenhoe Dam via Toowoomba. "The feasibility study is expected to be concluded in April. "The Premier has stood by Warwick and Stanthorpe during one of the worst droughts in memory. "The Premier said she wouldn't let us run out of drinking water and she has been true to her word. "We don't want to go through another summer like this one again and the pipeline is just the most welcome news we have had in a long time. "The only thing better would be more rain!" While the Premier took the time to visit Warwick - and later Stanthorpe - on Monday her announcement was 'light-on' in terms of the detail around costings for the pipeline. Previous speculation has put the potential cost around at least $100 million but a clearer picture will not emerge until the State Government reveals further details. Local State LNP MP for Southern Downs James Lister welcomed the pipeline announcement but this week also raised the issue of the proposed Emu Swamp Dam for Stanthorpe, which is intended primarily as an irrigation supply for Granite Belt producers. "We desperately need this water, so I thank the state government for the pipeline announcement, but I am also tired of them announcing stuff without following through," Mr Lister said. "I urge Annastacia Palaszczuk to be fair dinkum about starting work rather than just

suggested is a series of weirs or small dams on the Condamine River to the east of Warwick to harvest future flood flows, with that water to be transferred into Leslie Dam via a combination of pumping systems and gravity-feeding.

ABOUT THE SEQ WATER GRID ... talking the pipeline up before the election. "I say this because they made a big deal about their funding towards Emu Swamp Dam, but six months later they still haven't even signed the deed of agreement and the project has stalled. "I also note with amazement that the Premier still hasn't discussed the pipeline with the Mayor of Toowoomba. "Why would that be?" For his part, Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio this week told the Free Times he and his council were still awaiting formal talks with the Queensland Government and the Southern Downs Regional Council over the pipeline plan. The existing pipeline from Wivenhoe to Toowoomba was completed in 2010. Of that, the State Government provided a subsidy of $112 million and the remaining $60 million was in the form of a loan which Toowoomba ratepayers are still paying off indirectly through water access charges. "We are sympathetic to Warwick's situation - we were in a similar situation ourselves when the (Wivenhoe) pipeline was built," Cr Antonio said this week. "But we really do expect to have a whole of government discussion, a grown-up discussion, about this project and the full implications." Cr Antonio said those using water from a Toowoomba-Warwick pipeline would effectively be using infrastructure owned by the ratepayers of Toowoomba. "Our own water future here in Toowoomba is secure until 2049," he said. "But there are lots of other scenarios that are part of this - that includes the potential for water to come into this region from the Clarence River and a dam on the Mole River in northern New South Wales. "And are we talking about a pipeline to Warwick supplying raw or treated water? "So far we don't have any clear answers on any of those questions."

BIGGER PICTURE? Wivenhoe Dam is part of the South East Queensland 'Water Grid', a network of connected water storages including 12 dams across the south-east. As of this week the Water Grid

Cr Dobie has said the Premier has remained "true to her word" she will not let the region run out of water. collectively was at just over 56% of total capacity. As far as Toowoomba's supply from Wivenhoe is concerned, depending on rainfall in coming months Toowoomba could be supplemented with water from desalination plants at the Gold Coast and potentially even highly-treated effluent water from sewage treatment plants in Brisbane and Ipswich. The Free Times understands that officers within the Queensland Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy have been taken aback by the Premier's announcement this week and have expressed concerns about additional infrastructure being required from Wivenhoe Dam to Toowoomba to enable an extension to Warwick. It is understood this could involve duplication of the existing Wivenhoe to Toowoomba pipeline or the installation of additional pumping infrastructure to enable the delivery of the extra Wivenhoe water over the Toowoomba range. Comment has been sought from the State Government.

LOCAL REACTION ... If comments made by Free Times readers on Facebook this week are any indication, local reaction to the Toowoomba-Warwick pipeline plan has been mixed. Some readers applauded the announcement, while others said they believed money spent on a pipeline would be better directed towards the building of new dams in the Warwick and Stanthorpe regions, rather than relying on additional water supplies from South East Queensland. Options previously suggested by the local community include a new dam on the Condamine River at Elbow Valley east of Warwick or in the upper Emu Creek catchment further east towards the Main Range, along with raising the wall at Stanthorpe's Storm King Dam. Another option which has been

The SEQ Water Grid allows us to move treated drinking water around the region. This is especially important when patchy rainfall leaves some areas with full dams and other parts of the region with lower dam levels. The Water Grid can supplement but not completely replace local water supplies. The SEQ Water Grid is a bulk water supply network of: · 12 dams · 36 conventional water treatment plants · 3 purified recycled water treatment plants · 1 desalination plant · 28 bulk water reservoirs · 22 pump stations · 600km+ of bulk water supply pipelines. We also supply drinking water to 53,000 people living in 16 off-grid communities. The water for these communities is sourced and treated locally, then distributed to households and businesses. Source - Seqwater

ABOUT THE WIVENHOETOOWOOMBA PIPELINE... The Queensland Government provided a subsidy of $112.2 million and a loan of $60.856 million over 20 years. Total cost was $187 million. Operational costs include: Usage charge (litres pumped from Wivenhoe dam). Electricity to run the pumps. Maintaining the pumps, pipes and related infrastructure. Ongoing costs for access to Wivenhoe water exist in addition to operational costs. Toowoomba Regional Councils pays SEQWater an access charge that applies whether the pipeline is being used or not. Only residents connected to the Toowoomba Bulk Water Supply contribute to the payment of these costs. The Toowoomba Bulk Water Supply services the city of Toowoomba and the surrounding localities of Oakey, Jondaryan, Haden, Crows Nest, Highfields, Kingsthorpe, Gowrie Junction, Meringandan, Westbrook, Goombungee, Wyreema, Hodgson Vale, Top Camp, Mount Rascal and Preston. STATE COULD ‘CALL IN’ CHERRABAH BY JEREMY SOLLARS Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has said the proposal by the owners of Cherrabah Resort to commercially extract up to 96 megalitres of bore water from the property annually for commercial plastic bottling is "not appropriate" during the worst drought in the region's history. On her visit to Warwick on Monday of this week to announce the building of a Toowoomba-Warwick urban water pipeline Ms Palaszczuk would not rule out using State Government powers to "call in" the development application approved by Southern Down councillors at their December 2019 meeting. To "call in" a development application means the State Government overrides the council in question and can make its own decision on an application under the State Planning Act, with the decision normally made by the Local Government Minister, currently Stirling Hinchliffe. Ms Palaszczuk told the media on Monday she would consider speaking with the minister about potentially "calling in" the application by Cherrabah's owners, Wenxing and Wenwei Ma, saying in her view given the current drought conditions in this region commercial groundwater extraction such as that proposed by the Ma brothers is "not appropriate". "What can I say - we're in a drought," the Premier said, while taking questions from the media alongside Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie, after revealing details of the proposed Toowoomba-Warwick pipeline, which will be funded by the State Government. The Premier said she would raise the matter with Mr Hinchliffe in "the coming days". At time of printing of the Free Times this week other media were reporting that the Ma brothers had committed to “donating” their water allocation to “local charities and irrigators” and would not commence commercial extraction “during the drought”. This was attributed to Queensland’s acting Water Resources Minister Mark Ryan without clear reference to any statement from the Ma brothers, following the Premier’s visit to the region on Monday. Calls by the Free Times to their spokesman were not returned for this story, nor were several other calls and emails made and sent for comment from the Ma brothers in recent weeks. The Ma brothers, through their spokesman, also declined to comment to the Free Times when approached by us at the December 2019 council meeting at the Warwick council chambers, which all three attended in person. At their December 2019 meeting a majority of councillors voted in favour of the Ma brothers' application to extract groundwater from bores on Cherrabah Resort, at Elbow Valley east of Warwick, to be trucked to the Gold Coast for commercial plastic bottling. Voting in favour of the application were Mayor Tracy Dobie, Deputy Mayor Jo McNally and Councillors Rod Kelly, Sheryl Windle and Neil Meiklejohn. Against were Crs Vic Pennisi, Cameron Gow and Yve Stocks, with Cr Marika McNichol absent from the meeting. Cr Dobie has since repeatedly stated that the council could only deal with the 'operational' aspects of the application, such as the placement of pumping equipment and truck movements, and that the council freetimes.com.au

had no control over water allocations, which are granted by the Queensland Government. But some neighbouring landholders have pointed out that the council's planning rules allow councillors to refuse applications that are contrary to the wider interests of the local community, and believe a refusal by councillors could have been legally defended on that basis. The Ma brothers originally applied for approval in 2018 but withdrew their application before it went to a council meeting - having been set down for a vote in December 2018, with a recommendation by council officers for it to be refused - and as a result the application was deemed to be still current as of December last year. This meant it could be sent back to councillors for a vote without neighbouring landholders being informed - but also with an officers' recommendation to approve, on the basis of a new report commissioned by the Ma brothers in 2019 which gives heavily-qualified advice that the extraction plan would not affect the underground water supply of neighbouring landholders. Six other Elbow Valley landholders objected to the original 2018 application on the basis of the impact they believed it would have on their own groundwater supplies, and their views have not changed following last year's council approval. Central to the issue has been a series of consultants' reports on Cherrabah's underground water, with some experts raising doubts about the long-term sustainability of groundwater extraction on Cherrabah beyond any 12-month timeframe. The consultants who compiled the most recent report for the Ma brothers - Gilbert and Sutherland - state underground water on Cherrabah is in "deep aquifers" separated from higher and shallower underground streams supplying neighbouring properties. But Gilbert and Sutherland qualified their advice by stating they identified problems with geological information on the Cherrabah bores, and recommended a range of further investigations and "refinements" to modelling. They also conceded they had not been able to study "shallow" groundwater on Cherrabah as it is largely non-existent due to the drought. The Ma brothers are planning to contest conditions placed on the water operation by the council last December, which include a requirement to upgrade Keoghs Road to double lanes as far as O'Deas Road. Neighbours are hoping that may make the plan unviable, and have not ruled out a legal appeal of their own.

On the same page on the pipeline - but not Cherrabah. Mayor Tracy Dobie and Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk talk water in Warwick this week.

STATE CONCERNS... In any case, internal Queensland Government emails from 2009 clearly show officers from the then Queensland Departments of Natural Resources and Environment and Heritage Protection had significant concerns about the granting of the 96ML a year water licence to Cherrabah's owners. The licence was granted in 2010 to the Ma brothers who were at the time proposing to develop Cherrabah into an international mega-resort, plans which they later shelved for unspecified reasons. · The Free Times has obtained copies of the 2009 emails and other material released under Right To Information - to view the documents in full visit www. freetimes.com.au ●

FOCUS ON ‌ Allora Heritage Weekend

HERITAGE ON SHOW AT ALLORA The Allora Heritage Weekend to be held at the Allora Showgrounds this coming Australia Day Long Weekend marks the 25th time this event has been scheduled. Over that time, the event has grown from humble beginnings with a few heritage tractors and machinery showing people how things used to be done in yesteryear, to an event which hosts visitors from all over eastern Australia and even some international tourists who found the website and Facebook page. It is not unusual to host several thousand visitors, exhibitors and swap meet enthusiasts over the weekend. The event generates many thousands of dollars in fresh money for Allora and the surrounding areas. Some of this can be measured, as proceeds from the event are distributed around the area. Back over time, in excess of $45,000 in cash and kind has been donated to the Allora Show Society, and many other community groups have been the recipients of donations associated with the proceeds of the event. Last year alone, $10,000 was donated to LifeFlight and $5000 was donated to Pringle Cottage to assist in the restoration work on an old Dodge which started life in Pilton and ended up being part of the Fire Brigade, serving many years as a pump. Just recently, a little over $4500 was donated to the Allora Show Society in the form of new PA systems, speakers, and microphones to improve the assets on the ground for the future and reduce the need for additional investment.

Over time, many wonderful exhibits have been presented at the Heritage Weekend. Who could forget Ralph Affleck, the builder of the one-man sawmill at Legume at 60 years of age, with his logskidder 'Popeye' which he designed himself and had built

by a local engineer at Woodenbong using rear sections of old tractors, a supercharged Commer 'knocker' engine, a barrel from a WW2 trailed field gun - and who knows what else, racing around the showgrounds like a teenager! And Mick Bradford,

another national treasure, with his heavy horses. And 'Cookie' Tickle with his damn cow that squirts unsuspecting passers-by. And the 114 year old Rambler Model G, Queensland's most historic motor car, and many, many others. Last year it was steam engines - real, functional steam engines. You don't get to see these things in the ordinary course of events. This year there will be new surprises - as always. This year there will be certain changes to the program. These are yet to be fully finalised but will be available on the website at www.alloraheritageweekend.org prior to the weekend. There will be a multi-draw raffle, jointly supporting Days for Girls and Rural Aid on the Saturday, and more entertainment for the main arena. The Allora Show Society will operate the bar - and retain the proceeds - and provide the Saturday evening dinner, thereby spreading the joy even further. â—? 12439261-CG04-20

FEDERAL FUNDING PRIORITIES AGREED The Southern Downs Regional Council says it will "direct the focus" of $1 million in federal bushfire recovery funding announced by PM Scott Morrison earlier this month "towards rural residents and bushfire preparedness" in a submission to the Federal Government. At a special council meeting held on Tuesday 14 January councillors agreed to apply to the Federal Government for "resilience and recovery projects" and will "seek feedback on the eligibility" of the following initiatives under the Bushfire Recovery Funding Program · Water tank rebates for rural landowners not connected to any reticulated water supply · Fire break master plan to identify future fire breaks and address construction and maintenance of additional fire breaks within the region · Drought and bushfire regional readiness plan · Expressions of interest from community and sporting groups to undertake maintenance of community facilities such as halls and clubhouses After the meeting Mayor Tracy Dobie said "Council has been proactively navigating funding avenues to support the drought and fire affected region". "Both the State and Federal Governments have generously supported our region with multiple funding initiatives and grants that have directly benefited our community and

economy," Cr Dobie said. "Following the Federal Government funding announcement Council has been quick to address how it can move forward

to have the funding directed to where it is urgently needed. "The rural water tank rebate has been at the top of Council's wish list for some time.

"Council's submission will also include resilience projects that will put our region on the front foot with better preparation for future bushfire threats. "The Federal Government last week committed 'untied' funding to 42 local governments affected by bushfire since August 2019." At the Tuesday 14 January special meeting councillors also agreed on their submissions for funding under another $1 million in federal money, the Drought Communities Program Extension. A spokeswoman said councillors "weighed updated proposals as well as suggesting projects for inclusion". "Submissions to be sent for consideration include: · Projects to allow regional community organisations to undertake maintenance to halls, amenities, clubhouses · High priority community infrastructure projects such as Killarney off stream storage cover or projects identified from the regional Urban Design Frameworks and endorsed Streetscape projects · Shade structures in Council parks in rural villages · Pending rainfall and take-up of funding for water carting, supply and delivery of potable water to rural landowners No timeframe has been provided at this stage for announcement by the Federal Government of the successful project submissions by councils across Australia. ●

NO DATE YET FOR GORGE MEETING The Southern Downs Regional Council says it is "aware of the ongoing public concern following recent maintenance works on the Condamine River Road crossings and remains committed to keeping the community and interested parties informed prior to an official public meeting being scheduled". In a statement released last week a spokeswoman said council staff "have been working closely with the Departments of Environment and Science, Agriculture and Fisheries and Natural Resources, Mines and Energy to determine whether further action is required". Residents in the Condamine Gorge and wider Killarney area questioned the placing of gravel road base fill in the crossings late last year, which the council said was

in favour of concrete culverts over the crossings and others adamant the crossings should remain in a "natural" state. "These government agencies administer the legislation related to works in rivers and watercourses and are currently conducting their own independent investigations and inspections of the maintenance works carried out by Council on the crossings," the spokeswoman said last week. "These findings are pending and Council is awaiting the reports so that we have a full understanding and can share that information with the community. "Over the last few weeks, Council staff have been liaising with a number of concerned Killarney residents. "From these discussions, it was mutually agreed that further public consultation would

Opinions are divided over the future of the Gorge crossings. Pictured here is road base laid by the council in late 2019. "maintenance work" undertaken to "make the roads safer and more accessible for visitors, while also allowing rural residents and emergency services better access to local properties". Debate continues over the future of access through the Gorge, with some

be scheduled once all relevant information from the departments had been finalised. "Southern Downs Regional Council understands the community concerns and ongoing interest, and is committed to working with both the relevant State agencies and our local community to resolve any issues surrounding environmental impact from the maintenance on the Condamine River Road crossings and the future management of the area. "Once all of the information has been received, Council will share findings and have an open discussion with the community via a public meeting. "Council will advise of a date for the meeting and encourages all residents and interested parties to attend." ●

FEEDBACK SOUGHT ON GRANITE BELT VISION The Southern Downs Regional Council says it has "received significant interest from residents regarding the Granite Belt - Urban Design Framework project. A council spokeswoman said "due to the level of interest and feedback requesting a longer consultation period, SDRC will be accepting comment on the draft until Friday 28 February". "The draft framework was compiled in consultation with the community and the Granite Belt Planning Group, and identifies projects and initiatives to stimulate the

region," the spokeswoman said. Mayor Tracy Dobie said Council is "committed to engaging with the community and delivering initiatives and resources that will see the Granite Belt shine". "Council engaged with the community through a series of workshops to identify and capture ideas and aspirations for key projects, essential services and initiatives that will help build a bright future for the Granite Belt," Cr Dobie said. "The draft framework reflects the vision of the community and it is important that residents review the framework and

provide feedback at this final stage of the consultation process." The draft 'Granite Belt - Urban Design Framework' is available at www.sdrc.qld. gov.au on the "Have your say" webpage. Alternatively it is also on display at the Stanthorpe Civic Centre Foyer and printed copies are available at the Warwick and Stanthorpe Customer Service Centres. Feedback forms must be completed and returned to Council's Customer Service Centres in Warwick or Stanthorpe by Friday 28 February 2020. ●

OZ DAY CRICKET CARNIVAL GEARS UP It is time to celebrate all that is great about Australia and sometimes in very unique ways. The Warwick Australia Day Cricket carnival is certainly a main event on the Australia Day calendar. As a cricket carnival and Australia Day event it is only outdone in sheer weight of player numbers by the Gold Rush Ashes held in Charters Towers. Planning has been under way for many weeks to ensure the big weekend goes off smoothly. Dave Walker, Greg Payne and fellow organisers will be keenly watching the upcoming weather forecasts as they accommodate 20 teams in the main competition and the 12 teams registered for the social competition. Games will be played at ovals across the district with Slade Park, Mayhew, Briggs, Dunning, Wheatvale, Maryvale, Yangan, Redbacks Oval, Hamilton Oval, Allora, Pratten, Queen's Park Turf and Synthetic all getting a rally on Saturday and Sunday before Monday afternoon's final at Slade. So if you are keen to watch a game of cricket over the weekend you won't need to travel far afield. In fact be careful a couple of teams could turn up in your back yard. The carnival continues to draw former players and players of other sports back to the district keen to catch up with mates and enjoy a cold beverage or two on what are usually pretty warm days. Unfortunately I will not be pulling

out the penguin gear to Umpire this year but I'm hoping to make it the final on Monday. Good luck to the organisers and all the participating teams. If local cricket is not your thing and you prefer international or national sport you will be well served by the mouth watering offering of tennis matches coming up in the Australian Open and of course more of the never ending caravan of BBL games. Brisbane Heat supporters will be hoping Boof Lehmann has applied a large blow torch to the entire squad after their embarrassing capitulation last Sunday night at the Gabba. Meanwhile the Aussie cricket team heads home from India after their bizarrely scheduled three game ODI series. The tour was a scheduling disaster. Many Australian players were well off the boil in the final two games after rolling India in spectacular fashion in Game one. Seriously CA no more overseas tours in the middle of our summer of cricket. Plenty of channel surfing and late nights required to keep up with everything. Fingers crossed the Barty Party continues deep into the AO and who knows this new and improved Nick Kyrgios may just win over the Australian supporters yet. We all continue to think and say he (Kyrgios) possesses an awesome and unique talent. Let's hope he shows us more of the talent and less spat and brat. - Casey

A BEER, A BBQ AND LEGENDS KICK START CARNIVAL Have you booked your ticket yet for the Beer and BBQ evening with Jimmy Maher, the legendary Jeff Thompson (Thommo) and Trevor Gillmeister on Friday night at the Warwick Golf Club. With a line up of loose cannons like those three anything might happen as they recount plenty of tales in and around their illustrious careers. Tickets are just $60 per person and include beer and BBQ. The evening kicks off at 7.00pm and MC for the night is Channel 7 presenter Ben Davis. Bookings are essential and I can't think of a better way to kick start the big Australia Day Carnival weekend than spending an evening in the company of these three larrikins. The Bulls Masters will also be holding a free coaching clinic at Slade Park between 3.00pm - 5.00pm on Friday. If your child would like to attend please email admin@ bullsmasters.com.au and advise the numbers attending. UPSETS IN THE EARLY WEEKS OF 2020 Stanthorpe cricketers were back in action on the first weekend of January. With a round of the Dud Davis Shield scheduled for the Sunday, the format was T20 and players could not have been more grateful given the oppressive conditions. In an upset not many saw coming Tenterfield notched up their first win of the season when they set South's a run

chase of 143 in a home game at Shirley Park. Tenterfield opener Adam Genninges top scored. His knock of 31 runs from 22 deliveries set a good platform for his side. Batting in the middle order Shaun Merchant added 29 from 31 deliveries. South's were their own worst enemy gifting Tenterfield 30 wides and one no ball which contributed to a valuable extras total of 37. In reply South's Ben Staley opened with Chris Schnitzerling. The pair adding 26 before Schnitzerling was dismissed. Staley went to score 26 runs before he was dismissed. South's looked to be a step behind the required run rate from the outset. It was not until deep in South's innings that things stepped up a notch. Tom Bonner (31) and Zac Hendry (28) put their side in reach of the total. It was however too late. South's fell six runs short at 6/138 and were probably rueing that disappointing extras total. They were not alone though the Tenterfield bowlers also had their share of problems finding the spot recording 15 wides and four no balls in their innings. Tenterfield got the chocolates and are now on the board with four points. Valleys continued their unbeaten run with a big win over Wanderers, Valleys were quick to capitalize on some poor catching and rusty fielding. It allowed the competition leaders to get away to a good start. Valleys were 1/106 after 12 overs and in command.

With good batting performances from Curtis Allen (40), Charlie Moncada (36) and Cameron Crestani (21). Wanderers did well to restrict the score to 9/145. Simon Mascadri (4 wickets) and Brock Patti (3wickets) bowled well. Valleys with ball in hand looked in control from the start. Only Andrew Einam (25) and Tim Harslett (16) put up any resistance as Wanderers collapsed to be all out for 76. Stephen Martin took three wickets but it was a good all round bowling performance by the Valleys bowlers. The following weekend the upsets continued. The T20 format was almost scuttled when a recycled water sprinkler malfunctioned on Sheehan Oval. Both games were played on the CF White Oval averting any disruption to fixtures. RSL sounded a warning to other clubs when they upset the previously undefeated Valleys and South's bounced back from their surprise loss t nail-biting win over 3rd place rivals, post an important win over Wanderers. In a shock result Valleys after being sent in by RSL collapsed to be all out for a meagre 37 runs. Sam Dowie claimed 4-3 while Josh Wren and Tom Garland also claimed three wickets apeice. Dowie then added salt to the wound when he smashed 27 (not out) off 24 balls. There were a couple of nervous moments

when Steve Martin dismissed both Garland and Will Dowie for ducks however it took only seven overs for Sam Dowie to guide RSL to a big win. The game between South's and Wanderers turned into a nail biter. South's elected to bat first setting Wanderers a modest run chase of 109. Captain Ben Staley (20), Liam Lanza (33), Harry Williams (20) and Zac Hendry (22naot out) all made good contributions to the total. Andrew Einam and Jamie Carnell the pick of the Wanderers attack. Wanderers cruised to 4/72 and looked in control but a batting collapse followed the dismissal of Jamie Carnell and with a procession of batsmen returning to the clubhouse Wanderers went from being in command to all out four runs shy of the total in the 17th over. With last weekend's fixtures washed out the recent results have seen some movement on the leader board. Valleys remain clear on 36 points. RSL have moved to 32 and South's (20) have skipped two points clear of Wanderers (18). Tenterfield are on the board with six points GOOD FINISHES IN REP GAMES Two Rep games between Stanthorpe and Warwick have been decided in recent weeks and honours are one all. In the Davis Shield game Warwick who are defending the title they won last season set Stanthorpe a 199 run target. There were

some good performances with the bat from Sean Bryson (48), Tom Bourke (39) and Pat Gordon (15) in the Warwick innings. Josh Wren was Stanthorpe's leading wicket taker with four dismissals. In reply Mitch Drayton (36) and Tom Bonner (26) led the way. Brock Patti also added 16 runs after taking two wickets. Tight bowling from the Warwick attack kept a lid on the Stanthorpe scoring. Sean Bryson played pivotal all rounders role taking 2/17 while Luke Cullen finished with 3/31 and captain Dave Walker picked up 2/22. Warwick dismissed the visitors for 179. Although well shy of the required total this was a competitive game played in good spirit. Last weekend the Mitchell Shield sides faced off and again at Slade Oval. Stanthorpe batted first and Sam Dowie continued his excellent recent form with the bat scoring 70 plus runs. There was good support from Ben Staley and Charlie Moncada. The Warwick bowling attack did a good job to restrict the visitors to 172 after a solid opening saw them cruise to 1/152. Excellent bowling from Carter Bilbrough 3/19 from eight overs and Joe Morris 5/11 from six overs had Warwick chasing a very gettable total. The game always looked as though it would go right to the wire. The Stanthorpe bowling attack gave their opponents nothing and Warwick fell just five runs short of the target.

CASEY O’CONNOR

Some tight bowling by Stanthorpe restricted the Warwick team as they fell 5 runs short of the total off their 50 overs. Moncada backed up his batting with four wickets while Liam Lanza snared three. GOLFERS SWING INTO 2020 The 2020 golfing year in Stanthorpe began with a single stroke event that also doubled as the opening round of the Foundation Cup. The day was sponsored by local cricketer and a former top junior golfer, Jason Lawer. Although Jason has not pursed his golfing he remains a strong supporter of the club and members hope that he will return to the fairways in due course. Lyle Bryant, perhaps inspired by his playing partners, showed some excellent form to return a winning score of 42 points ahead of runner up Rod Werner. Werner shared the putting honours with Michael Thompson. Thompson in turn also figured in the Best Gross return - he and Brendan Barker finishing with the Best Gross score of 77 points. The second and final round of the Foundation Cup, another single stroke event was played the following week with several players in contention to add their name to the list of winners. The round was sponsored by Australian Vinegar. Owner and club member Ian Henderson presented each player with a complementary Australian Vinegar golf ball which was then used for the long drive contest at the first hole. ●
