Donation saves lives By Luke Voogt he family of a North Geelong crash victim whose organ donation gave six people a “second chance” is urging locals to register as donors. he call comes as an Independent analysis reveals donor registration in Geelong’s north is just half the national average. About 12 hours ater Amanda Primmer died earlier this month doctors told her family her major organs had saved six recipients’ lives, former partner Darren Camilleri explained. “Knowing that her donation has helped others would have illed Amanda with happiness,” he said. He and Amanda raised “three beautiful children” in 11 years together before separating, and during that time a TV documentary inspired them to register, he said.

‘‘

There’s no point going to our graves with all our organs - Darren Camilleri

“She was pregnant with our irstborn Lachlan. We just looked at each other said there’s no point going to our graves with all our organs.” Damien described Amanda as a “loving mother” who would give the shirt of her back for anyone, following her funeral last Friday. Amanda’s brother James Primmer was also “very proud” of his sister’s donation, saying she “always had time for everybody”. James immediately registered as an organ donor ater hearing how much his sister had helped. “here are so many people waiting for a lung or heart transplant and their lives are slowly deteriorating,” he said. “he way I look at it, they aren’t going to serve you in the aterlife.” While 69 per cent of Australians are willing to donate their organs when they die, less than half of that number are registered donors, according to DonateLife. Australia’s laws require citizens to ‘opt in’ to donate organs and James admits he had been one of millions happy to donate but yet to register. “I sort of never thought about it,” he said. “But when something like this hits home, it puts you in this mind frame: ‘yeah, I should have done this ages ago’.”

Eighteen per cent of residents in Geelong’s north are registered organ donors, compared to the Australian average of 33 per cent. Damien’s and Amanda’s home postcodes of 3214 (Corio) and 3215 (North Geelong) have registration rates of 17 and 19 per cent

respectively. In the Independent’s analysis of 251,147 Geelong and Bellarine residents, 23 per cent were registered in 2018, exceeding the Victorian average of 19 per cent. Point Lonsdale’s and Queensclif’s ageing

population had by far the highest registration rate of 37 per cent. Ocean Grove had 29 per cent, while Geelong, Newtown and South Geelong had 28 per cent. For information on organ donation visit donatelife.gov.au

Gonorrhoea increase in Geelong By Luke Voogt Gonorrhoea is increasing in Geelong with cases doubling in the city since 2015, according to public health data. he sexually transmitted infection (STI) also increased per capita year-on-year from 60.8 cases per 100,000 in 2018 (145) to 67.1 (160) last year. “here is a deinite rise,” said Rochelle Hamilton, nurse manager of Barwon Health’s sexual health clinic. “We’re picking up a lot of young girls with gonorrhoea. We diagnosed one this week and

I’ve diagnosed two at the end of last week.” Geelong clinicians were picking up more pharyngeal gonorrhoea – the version afecting the back of the mouth, according to Ms Hamilton. “We’ve changed the treatment for that because it’s very diicult to treat,” she said. Pharyngeal gonorrhoea oten had no symptoms, making it more diicult to detect without screening compared anal and genital versions, she added. GPs and health practitioners sometimes missed the pharyngeal version by not asking speciic questions about the patient’s sexual activities before screening, Ms Hamilton

explained. his could lead to them screening the wrong area of the body, she said. “You have to ask. If you don’t do that screen, it could be positive in one spot and negative in the other.” While Ms Hamilton acknowledged gonorrhoea was increasing in Geelong, she attributed part of the rise to improved screening practices and awareness. “I think slowly but surely we’re getting the message out. We’re asking the right questions (and) we’re doing more screening.” Barwon Health also planned to introduce

extra screening for pregnant women, Ms Hamilton said. Screening in the irst trimester for gonorrhoea and other STIs had “been routine for many, many years”, she explained. “But we are going to start screening at 28 weeks as well to make sure it’s been picked up,” she said. Syphilis in Geelong decreased last year, despite reports of an outbreak in Melbourne, while chlamydia was trending downward. Barwon Health Reproductive and Sexual Health service operates free of charge Tuesday from 2pm to 7pm.

Bushire donation replaces ireworks A $10,000 donation will go to bushire-ravaged communities following the cancellation of Geelong’s traditional Australia Day ireworks, Royal Geelong Yacht Club has announced. Festival of Sails chairman Stuart Dickson on Wednesday announced the club would establish an appeal for bushire victims. “We think this year the bushire victims should be the focus of our attention on Australia Day,” he said. “So we’re delighted to launch this new fundraising campaign as an initiative of the Festival of Sails.” he announcement comes ater the club

decided to cancel Sunday’s ireworks out of respect for tens of thousands of victims and ireighters across Australia. All funds raised would go to the Salvation Army National Bushire Appeal to help families and communities impacted by the ires, Mr Dickson said. A ‘water-ski light show spectacular’ would replace the ireworks, he announced. he $10,000 donation came from the savings of cancelling the ireworks, with the remainder of that money paying for the alternative entertainment and a cancellation fee, Mr

Dickson said. Australia Day festivities begin 11am at Rippleside Park with giant slides, jumping castles, rides, emergency displays and dozens of other free family activities. he day features the talents of military re-enactors, Dazzling Dan the Magic Man, Scottish dancers, face-painters, stilt walkers and Geelong identity Dame Edna Average. he event also includes a lag-raising ceremony at 1pm. Visit festivalofsail.com.au for information on how to donate to the festival’s bushire appeal. Luke Voogt

he Surf Coast Shire has dropped the speed limit on a popular Torquay road in response to a 2760-signature petition. But the council refused to implement the requested 60km/h speed limit for Messmate Road, between Surf Coast Highway and Coombes Road, enforcing an 80km/h zone instead. he petition called to reduce the 100km/h speed limit by 40km/h following community concerns over increasing vehicle collisions with kangaroos residing in adjacent paddocks. But a recent council assessment found lowering the limit by 40km/h would provide “inconsistencies” with the existing network and require “consistent police enforcement”. “Lower inconsistent speed limits may also push vehicles onto other local council roads and increase risk to these roads,” the report said. he council installed kangaroo warning signs along the road last December, as also requested in the petition. But lead petitioners, Jodie Oliver and Vic Rippon, said in a post on their Wildlife Projects 3228 Facebook page the 80km/h speed limit was “still too high”. Messmate Road had become “a highway for cars” that were constantly “breaking speed limits”, Ms Oliver previously told the Independent. Nearby development was forcing kangaroos to frequently jump across the road in search of food and water in surrounding paddocks, according to Ms Oliver. Natalee Kerr

Median prices dropped 6.6 and 6.1 per cent in Newtown and Geelong West to $782,500 and $678,000 respectively in 2019, the institute announced this week. he inner Geelong suburbs also sustained 2.2 and 1.4 per cent losses respectively for the

turnover in regional Victoria for the December quarter with 52 sales and the fourth-highest for 2019 with 215. Belmont bucked the overall trend recording a rise of 3.2 per cent for the December quarter and .9 per cent for 2019. he suburb also had regional Victoria’s sixth-highest turnover for the December quarter with 39 sales. Average prices for greater Geelong overall rose slightly last quarter and 2.2 per cent last year. he falls in Geelong’s more expensive suburbs came as regional Victorian house prices climbed 2.2 per cent in the December

quarter and 2.8 per cent for 2019. he average median house price for regional Victoria reached a record $422,500, according to REIV president Leah Calnan. “hese are outstanding igures; the Victorian real estate sector continues to soar and set new heights,” Ms Calnan said. “With new high prices being set, Victorian real estate is undergoing a golden patch of form, which is great news for everyone.” Strathdale (15.3 per cent), Portland (9.8 per cent) and Ballarat Central (6.2 per cent) recorded the highest growth in regional Victoria last quarter.

Kids net cash for ires Four local youngsters netted 514 free throws in an hour recently to raise more than $2500 for bushire-ravaged communities. Waurn Ponds siblings Patrick and Kaitlyn Dunbabin joined Jordan Knight and Archie Bellears for the shootout ater gathering dozens of sponsors together. Patrick, 10, reckoned he sank 136 of the baskets and said he was “very happy” to hit about half of his shots. “We celebrated partially (ater each shot) but we were more focussed on getting as many shots up as we could,” he said. “Each morning I wake up and watch the news and every story is about the ires, and I just want to help them. “All of those pictures that are coming in look really scary and sad.” Patrick praised his younger sister’s efort of 90 baskets but suggested she would make a better Aussie rules footballer than basketballer.

“She’s a bit rough on the court,” he said. heir mother Kelly Dunbabin was proud of the group’s eforts to fundraise for those in need. Patrick and his fellow Rovers Basketball Club members got up at 6.30am on January 11, joining more than 100 basketballers raising money at Waurn Ponds’ AWA Alliance Bank Stadium over that weekend. “He wanted to get up at 3am and I wasn’t doing that,” she said. “He’s a good kid. Once Kaitlyn saw that he was doing she wanted to do get involved too. “hey took turns having a drink so there was always someone shooting.” Luke Voogt Archie Bellears, Kaitlyn and Patrick Dunbabin and Jordan Knight raised $2500 for bushire relief recently. Sai skates to bronze Grovedale ice hockey player Sai Lake has won bronze at the Winter Youth Olympics following his team’s thrilling come-from-behind win in the third-place playof. “I’m lost for words, it was amazing!” he told the Independent from Lausanne, Switzerland, last week following the 6-5 win. Sai was one of two male and four female Australians to earn selection for the National Olympic Committee (NOC) 3-on-3 competition. he inaugural competition mixed players from diferent countries into eight teams to give athletes from “developing ice hockey nations” a chance to compete. “My friends, when I told them, were in utter disbelief because not many Australians get selected for the games, let alone for ice

hockey,” Sai said. “My family are extremely proud of my achievement and cannot believe the opportunity I’ve gotten.” Sai played in ‘Team Brown’ alongside players from New Zealand, Hong Kong and across Europe, notching up 14 assists (passes resulting in a goal) for the tournament. “Most of those countries play at extremely high levels, which are much higher than Australia, and (their players) are all extremely skillful,” he said. Sai had an important three assists in the bronze playof, which organisers described as match of the tournament. he bronze medal comes ater Sai took on a gruelling physical training program in preparation for the Olympics. Strike to halt train services By Luke Voogt No Geelong-Melbourne trains will run next Wednesday as V/Line workers strike for the second time in two months for better pay, union oicials have announced. Buses will replace trains as workers strike for 24 hours on the Geelong line for “better conditions”, according to the Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU). “his campaign is all about conditions,” the union’s Victorian secretary Luba Grigorovitch said.

he industrial action follows workers striking last month for better conditions including a six per cent annual pay rise over three years. “Negotiations with V/Line continue to go in circles, we’re not getting anywhere, we need a circuit breaker,” Ms Grigorovitc said. “Our members take great pride in their work, getting people from A to B, but when government and the company team up to attack their ability to deliver that service they take it very personally.” Employees moved to take action following a year-long industrial dispute with V/Line.

“We don’t take any action lightly and ultimately would prefer it be avoided, but RTBU members are fed up and the public deserves a way forward,” Ms Grigorovitc said. She accused Public Transport Minister Melissa Horne of showing no interest in RTBU’s “longstanding campaign for additional funding for regional services”. he coalition’s regional public transport spokesperson Steph Ryan also took aim at government. “It’s time embattled Public Transport Minister Melissa Horne steps up and resolves this mess,” she said.

But a government spokesperson said the strike had unnecessarily impacted thousands of passengers relying on the “vital” services. “We urge both parties to get back to the negotiation table and come to a resolution quickly so that our passengers aren’t impacted particularly during this important events season.” V/Line CEO James Pinder described the strike during next week’s Australian Open inals and the previous action days before Christmas as “extremely disappointing and frustrating”.

Corio skate park opens to link to the “very successful” nearby youth services centre. “I hope people in our north use the skate park and also have a look at the great services on ofer at the fOrT,” he said. “If you’re driving past on Melbourne Rd and can safely have a look, I am sure all people will enjoy seeing our young people doing their latest 180 kicklip on their skateboards.” While skaters can use the park now, council would oicially open it on February 22 during its free youth festival SKAART, City Hall announced. he opening includes a free sausage sizzle and skateboards, scooters and protective equipment available to borrow for free. he upgraded skate park follows the opening of a new $1.342 million sotball and baseball pavilion in Stead Park last November. Skaters can now drop-in on a new $550,000 Corio skate park with 24 obstacles and 520 square metres of skating space, council has announced. “his is a fantastic new recreation space in Stead Park, adding to the growing number of upgraded facilities in the fast-growing north,” deputy mayor Kylie Grzybek said. “he skate park will attract scores of young residents to the precinct and also see more people introduced to the city’s excellent youth programs and services.” he project also provides social spaces, bench seating, a water fountain and a landscaped pathway connecting to City Hall’s youth drop-in centre, the fOrT. Lighting installation and landscaping works, including 40 new trees, will complete the range of improvements, according to City Hall. Sailing into history Brendan Garner returns for another round of Festival of Sails, writes Natalee Kerr.

1. The MacGlide Festival of Sails runs from 25 to 27 January 2. It is the largest keelboat regatta in the southern hemisphere 3. 245 boats are expected to sail the 56km passage race from Williamstown to Geelong on Saturday 4. There are nine boats coming from interstate – six from NSW, one from QLD, one from SA and one from ACT 5. This year marks the 177th regatta

oming face-to-face with 12 metre-high waves and 60 knot winds is a scenario Geelong sailing veteran Brendan Garner remembers all too well. It was 2004 and the then 28-year-old sailor was competing in his debut Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. “I remember just thinking why am I doing this?” Brendan recalls. “At that stage of the race you very much go into survival mode. You’re just trying to make sure to keep the boat in one piece and all the crew on board.” A total of 122 boats started the race, but only half of the leet inished due to the rough conditions, Brendan explains. he 60th edition was remembered as the toughest since the tragic 1998 race where six sailors died, dozens were rescued, and ive boats sank. “here were a couple of really bad waves that washed the crew out, but we were all clipped on,” Brendan recalls. “If we weren’t, we certainly would’ve had people go overboard.” he all-Geelong crew inished “20-something” but getting to the end was a celebration in itself. “Being my irst Sydney to Hobart, there was this real sense of achievement,” Brendan said. “here are so many variables involved with sailing and when you get them all right it’s a great feeling.” Sailing has occupied much of the now 44-year-old’s life. For three decades, the father-of-three has sailed around the world. He irst learnt to sail in Corio Bay as a seven-year-old ater his dad, John, became involved in the late 1970s. But as Brendan remembers, his love for the sport started through a “strange” beginning. “My dad was sailing a 60-foot racing yacht at the time,” he recalls. “As the boat captain he was in charge of getting it ready on a Saturday morning. “He promised me that if I came along with him we would go to get pancakes ater. “hat incentive of pancakes every Saturday morning deinitely drew me in.” Following in his father’s footsteps, Brendan sailed in his irst regatta, Geelong’s Festival of Sails in 1988 at age 12. he Leopold shipwright is now set to take on his 32nd consecutive stint at the festival this weekend. Despite joining an “exclusive” club of consecutive participants, Brendan is reluctant to kick up a fuss. “It’s just something I do every year, it’s always in my calendar,” he said. “It’s the biggest keelboat regatta in the southern hemisphere – if you’re into sailing you have to be there.” Even a move interstate could not stop him from competing in the local event.

Festival facts

Brendan pictured alongside sons Josh, Will and Ben, and dad John. (Rebecca Hosking)

As a 20-year-old, Brendan was living in Queensland with a group of sailing friends from Geelong. “It was coming up to Australia Day and we were looking for something to do but there wasn’t anything on sailing-wise,” he explains. “So we jumped in the car and drove down to Geelong for the weekend regatta. “It was a bit of a whirlwind trip but we just couldn’t miss it.” From dinghies to grand prix race boats,

Brendan has sailed in everything throughout the years. He recalls his irst passage race on his dad’s etchell. “I was a little bit apprehensive and nervous to get on dad’s boat,” he said. “It was quite windy and an upwind race, so it was a wet and very uncomfortable.” his year, Brendan is set to compete in the historic passage race from Williamstown to Geelong alongside his dad and eldest son Ben, 14.

His other sons Josh, 11, and Will, 7, are preparing to compete in the festival’s cadet racing competition. he passage race on Saturday is set to attract more than 240 boats. “It’s not oten you get to compete in an event with three generations,” he said. “As a kid, sailing with my dad was a big thing and now to be able to do that alongside my kids and my dad is pretty incredible.” Brendan is hopeful his dad, who has recently been unwell, will be able to get better for the race. “He’s very conident he will join us,” he said. “He’s super determined.” Like his dad, Brendan is committed to continue the sport for as long as he can. “I’ve got at least 30 years of still being able to compete at peak level,” he said. Brendan describes getting on the water as an “escape” from everything else. “On the ocean my phone is turned of, you’re just on the boat with your mates racing as hard as you can and then at night you’re staring at the stars in the sky,” Brendan said. “Corio Bay is deinitely one of the best places for sailing,” he said. “Every time I come back from sailing in Melbourne or Sydney, I always drive around the waterfront and just think how good is Geelong?”

You will have to wait for the race to pass through; once the race has passed the police tail car will inform you that it is safe to move on. Please be aware that there may be some tail riders still on the road.

It is estimated that you will have to wait for no longer than 15-20 minutes.

to ensure the roads are clear for the races. Parking restrictions will come into effect earlier on race days than the actual race times, so please look for any advisory signage situated on the event course prior to parking your vehicle. Emergency access is a priority and will always take precedence over the event. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times during the event via existing footpaths. Where roads are closed for short periods, access across roads will be via marshalled course crossing points. Due to the large volume of cyclists on the roads during the event you should take extra care when crossing the roads the course travels along. Residents and businesses located on the course roads have been sent detailed advice regarding access arrangements during the event. Public transport there will be changes to public transport services across the weekend. Customers are advised to check the PTV website for updates on www.ptv.vic.gov.au/ news-and-events/

By Luke Voogt he 94-year-old Belchers Corner is inally set to come down in a painstaking three-month demolition removing 800 tonnes of material and costing about $700,000. “It’s all (to be) done by hand,” said Michael Nigido, council’s building surveyor. “It’s all heavy manual labour.” he building could not withstand “forces and loads applied by heavy machinery” due to its poor structural integrity, making conventional demolition dangerous, Mr Nigido explained.

‘‘

The basis of all work that we are carrying out is safety - Michael Nigido

’’

“he basis of all work that we are carrying out is safety,” he said. he “30 or so” workers on the site each day would use small handheld jackhammers and demolition saws instead, Mr Nigido said. Workers were currently erecting scafolding to the rear of Belchers corner and would put up a scafold across the front of the building next week, Mr Nigido said. Contractors would use “reverse construction” to “cut and slice” the building from the top down following an internal strip-out, with temporary supports to keep it stable, he said. hey would also build a new wall for the adjacent Hopetoun Chambers, which currently shares its eastern wall with Belchers Corner, he added. Mr Nigido warned motorists of delays as City Hall cordoned-of footpaths and partially-closed Ryrie St. “We have put in place measures and signage

around the city with VicRoads to alert motorists to avoid the area if possible,” he said. Trucks from the site would exit onto Ryrie St, with council to extend green light signals on Ryrie, McKillop and Kilgour Sts by 20 seconds to “lush” congestion, Mr Nigido said. Council evicted 24 businesses from Belchers Corner in mid-2018 ater the discovery of concrete cancer that had caused the building to compress by about 6cm. City Hall aimed to recover “100 per cent” of the combined $2

million cost of demolition and stabilising the building, its planning director Gareth Smith said. “It was very fortunate that it was found and reported at the time and there wasn’t a catastrophe.” he site is located in a zone with a “maximum preferred height” of 32m with no mandatory height limit. he council was aware of “some interest in potential purchase” of the site following the demolition, Mr Smith said.

MY GEELONG Geelong’s Max Steinfort was one of 12 local students who recently rode across the Nullarbor – raising more than $50,000 for mental illness. he 24-year-old talks to Natalee Kerr. What is your connection to Geelong? I was born and raised in Geelong. I lived at home with mum, dad and my three older siblings. I moved away ater school for four years to complete my undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Melbourne. Following the completion of my BSc I moved back to Geelong. I commenced my postgraduate medical degree at Deakin University in 2018. What was it like growing up here? I loved growing up in Geelong. As a kid, I enjoyed playing local footy, watching the Cats down at ’Skilled Stadium’ and participating in junior nippers down in Anglesea.

(Rebecca Hosking) 199849_33

What are you passionate about?

it would draw attention to, and somewhat normalise the topic amongst young people. Many of the riders who joined me had touching and oten tragic stories of how mental health has impacted themselves, their friends and their loved ones. hese stories provided a heap of the motivation I needed to get across the Nullarbor when the going was tough. What was the best and most challenging thing about the ride? he best thing about the ride was how the group worked together. Constant challenges were thrown our way, however, the group managed to stay extremely positive throughout the whole journey. he most challenging part for me was actually inishing the ride. For over two weeks it was go-go-go, then all of a sudden, we were done. It took a little while to unwind.

I’m very passionate about my current medical studies. I’m passionate about making the Geelong community as healthy as it can be, and I will hopefully soon possess some of the skills to help make a diference. I’m also very passionate about the Cats winning another lag – sooner rather than later!

What do you like most about the Geelong community?

Tell us about your charity ride to raise awareness for mental health?

What do you think the Geelong community can do better?

Mental health has always been a signiicant issue within the community. Until I commenced my studies at university, I was somewhat oblivious to the burden that mental illness places on the health system and community as a whole. I hoped that through taking part in the ride,

Getting into cycling made me realise that it can be diicult to get around in Geelong without a car. here has been a lot of progress made recently with bike paths and cyclist awareness signs, however, I think we can still do a lot more to make Geelong a safe place to ride.

I like how Geelong still has a smaller community feel to it, although it’s a big city. Oten in Melbourne it’s easy to get lost amongst the masses, but I don’t feel like that in Geelong.

Now 75, Edith celebrated her 50th anniversary with the retail giant this week. “My plan was to work here for two years but then 50 years later I’m still here,” she said. he mother-of-one worked full-time for 28 years as deli manager before going part-time ater her husband had a stroke. She is Coles’ longest serving employee in the region, and is one of 10 people to have joined the exclusive “50-year club” in the supermarket’s 105-year history.

Geelong’s Edith Vasle started her irst supermarket job when there were no barcode scanners or automatic packaging machines. In 1969, the then 24-year-old worked at the deli department where she manually had to prepare and price salads and meats for customers. “I can’t exactly remember my irst day, but I do remember the aprons we used to wear and our little hats,” she said. “We used to do everything manually but now it’s all computerised.” Five decades later and shoppers at Cole’s Belmont may still recognise Edith’s face while getting their groceries.

Edith said she hoped to keep working for as long as she could. “I’ve been asked a few times if I am going to retire soon, I say ‘no way’,” she said. She celebrated her milestone on hursday with an in-store lunch alongside her family, fellow team members and regular customers. “I love my customers, they’re like family,” Edith said. “hey come in every week and you know exactly what they want.” Store manager Michael Hogan said the long-serving employee has established a “fantastic” rapport with shoppers. “Edith has so many customers that go out of their way to shop at Coles Belmont just to see her,” he said.

Geelong’s council will crack down on petro-chemical companies ater rejecting a bid to expand chemical storage at Corio. But a councillor has warned a tougher stance on the industry could threaten Geelong jobs and investment.

Developers have unveiled plans for a new plaza at Torquay’s former primary school site that they hope would become a meeting hub for residents and holiday makers. he plaza, on the corner of Payne St and Bristol Rd, would ofer a place for people to sit and talk and would complement a new strip of high-quality boutique shops, similar to Geelong’s Pakington St, along Bristol Rd.

A cheap bus home from Geelong nightspots will extend services on the Bellarine Peninsula. City of Greater Geelong will ofer a new 4am service to Drysdale and Cliton Springs from February.

YOUR SAY Look at the averages, Melva Melva Stotts’ letter (17/1/2020) rightly concludes that “heat and bushires are not recent happenings” but what is recent is the increase in average temperatures that Australia (and the rest of the world) have experienced and how this has impacted on bushire risk. When Melva was born in 1941, the average temperature in Australia was 0.56 degrees below average. And 2.08 degrees below our hottest year 2019! When Melva was 40 she had lived through 12 years with above average temperatures and 38 years below average. However, over the last 40 years, Melva has experienced one year with below average temperatures and 39 above average. Now she only needs to unpack those jumpers of hers in June and July, instead of March to August! Mark Ruseler Geelong

Fire action needed now In Windermere Ward, north of Geelong, major ires occurred in 1969, 1985 and 2006. hese ires burnt through part of Lara where 23 people died, the You Yangs and in 2006 about one third of the Brisbane Ranges from Durdidwarrah to Anakie and back to Staughton Vale with a wind change. Ash and embers were falling at Corio Village Shopping Centre. As there are plans for large scale residential developments at Lara West and Lovely Banks there is a need for an updated long term Fire Mitigation Plan for this area with hotter and drier summers forecast. For people in rural areas silly council by-laws that restrict cleaning up ire hazards on properties should be scrapped. Also, the roadway width of east–west roads and lanes need to be wide enough for two trucks to meet and pass safely. Roadside vegetation

Fireighters should be respected by improving road access and reducing fuel loads. City of Greater Geelong councillors and oicials need to be proactive on this issue and stop being brainwashed by Agenda 21 sustainability dictates and put saving people’s lives and property irst. Bernie Bourke Balliang

Contradictions abound Last week, Peter Mitchell agreed that “nothing in science can be proven correct, but it can be proven wrong” but then immediately contradicted his words by saying that Anthropogenic Climate Change theory reached a position in the late 1980s where “experts” couldn’t ind a problem with it so therefore it is unchallengeable – which is nonsense. Albert Einstein said: “No amount of experimentation can ever prove me right; a single experiment can prove me wrong.“ But what would he know! Stephen Blackburn also commented

implying that the scientiic principle “a theory can never be proven right” is subservient to “the consensus of scientists” who believe we are in a “climate emergency”. Mr Blackburn is also contradicting Albert Einstein. Galileo and many others showed that consensus is scientiically meaningless. here was, and still is, an enormous number of experts who believe our current warming cycle is entirely normal with multiple historical precedents but they are ignored by the media. If you Google “97% consensus”, you will see that the claim is a total fraud where, from an original 10,000 scientiic reports, 77 were carefully selected and surprise, surprise, 75 authors were global warmists. If you Google “little ice age” then click the “Wikipedia” link, you will see a graph showing temperatures for the last 2000 years. It shows that our current warming cycle started around 1650, well before the industrial revolution and 300 years before the experts say CO2 could have afected global temperatures. Peter Rees Bell Park

The earth is safe Contrary to public misconception – which is driven by dubious science – there is no climate emergency. here is no visible threat being posed to the planet by carbon dioxide emissions – or anything else. hese are the facts: as temperature rises it causes carbon dioxide levels to rise in response centuries later. Al Gore got it back to front in An Inconvenient Truth, that rising CO2 levels will cause temperatures to rise – not so. Mankind does not have to concern itself with climate variability. here are enough tangible problems confronting humanity without our attention being diverted by the esoteric iction of global warming.

herefore we don’t need to give the planet the beneit of the doubt and that’s because there is no doubt. Why squander billions on trying to address an issue at the end of the day we have absolutely no control over? If a Martian came to this planet today he would think we are completely out of our tree trying frantically to solve a non-existent problem – and he’d be right. Alan Barron Grovedale

Climate change is real You may have made some accurate points J Hodges. Firstly, the brainwashing is in full swing, the brainwashing is working. Secondly, 183 ires were likely lit by arsonists since September. Australia’s climate change is real, it is fact and only ignorance or vested interest will inhibit a this view. Here is a link from CSIRO to prove this: www.csiro.au/en/Research/OandA/ Areas/Oceans-and-climate/Climate-changeinformation. I do sincerely apologise, though, if you are a climate scientist or weather expert and are in a better position than our peak science body to understand the complexities of weather and climate. If so please provide some evidence rather that weightless opinion. Jake O’Brien Geelong

Mums, especially if they haven’t been in dance classes themselves, can ind it a bit of a challenge inding the right one for their child. And they can inadvertently form unhelpful expectations or not properly consider the whys and hows of it all. Some of the best dance teachers around ofer the following advice to mums and dads who want what’s best for their child when it comes to the world of dance: 1. Do a trial class irst his gives parents the chance to observe how the teacher delivers lessons, their communication skills and choice of words. Kids oten want to observe a class before they feel comfortable joining in. With a toddler class, it’s oten best to simply join in yourself and show the way. 2. Don’t compare your child to others in the class Parents can unintentionally ind themselves comparing their child with others, even from the very irst class. hey may see their own child listening less, jumping and skipping around haphazardly, and make an assessment that the child isn’t really “into it” or the class isn’t right for them. It can seem a little chaotic but a good teacher has a plan. Kids generally ind dancing uninhibitedly comes naturally and it’s actually the best starting point. 3. Don’t opt out of the end-of-year concert Even if you ind yourself having to thread and attach a bucketful of beads to a costume or need to reorganise a heavy holiday schedule, the concert ofers a chance to put aside personal needs and wants and focus on the kids. Concerts are essentially all about them. hey instil conidence, spark joy and nurture crucial presentation skills in the kids, while teachers get their moment in the sun to show their creativity. 4. Don’t underestimate the value of forming life-long bonds his applies to children and parents. Meeting other mums and dads can open up new social interactions, while kids have the same opportunity. Learning together in a fun environment is a great way for kids to bond. If they continue on with classes as they grow, they share the joys, pains and successes of their dance “career” with like-minded peers which can cement signiicant friendships. (iStock)

Rollerway ofers a range of party packages.

Skating into party fun How much fun can be squeezed into two and a half hours? Plenty, according to Ashlie Aparicio, manager of Rollerway Skate Centre in Newtown. his small window of time can deliver a wonderful and memorable way to celebrate a birthday, with guests on skates or rollerblades having more fun than should be legal. And it’s not just the kids who can get in on this, as Ashlie explains. “Our parties are recommended for kids six years or older, although littlies can also get in on the action,” she says. “However, we also put on a great party to celebrate the likes of 30th or 40th birthdays, or hen’s nights. “Sometimes party groups go the whole hog

and dress up in their best ‘80s gear or some other theme. With all our lights and music, the party atmosphere is non-stop and people really get into it.” Value for money is a big focus at Rollerway. Most of the all-inclusive packages range from $18-$21 a person, covering admission, skate or rollerblade hire, party bags and catering – and some even ofer a birthday cake. If you’re new to skating, Ashlie says it’s a fun and challenging activity that people can easily pick up.

“We see kids who can hardly lace their skates get on and achieve “the impossible”. hey’re scooting around in no time. Older people, surprisingly, don’t take much longer to learn but half the fun is the learning, with all of the thrills and chills, and the steady rise in conidence, and the sense of achievement. “One thing is a certainty in roller skating: lots of laughter.” Rollerway is the place to be to make the most of the end of the current school holidays, too – and don’t forget Australia Day. Kids of all ages

can learn a new skill while having maximum fun. It’s a great entertainment choice for any holiday time or weekend, whether for a child’s ‘play date’, a family looking for something enjoyable to do together, or teens needing to release energy in a safe and inclusive environment. Rollerway Skate Centre, 6-8 Lambert Avenue, Newtown. Opens daily during school holidays. Inquiries: 0411 335 544 or visit rollerway.com.au.

The Bard at his best

(Supplied)

One of world’s most loved tragedies is coming to Leura Park Estate. Leura Park Estate, together with Essential heatre, presents two performances of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, one of the Bard’s most powerful and popular works. Tempted by the prophecies of three mysterious witches and encouraged by his power hungry wife, Macbeth’s ambition to be King of Scotland leads him into a nightmarish world of evil, deceit and murder. Shakespeare’s rousing tragedy is illed with ferocious battles, supernatural horrors, stunning language and some of the Bard’s most vivid characters. In a time where people are hooked on Game of hrones and Black Mirror, where political ambition drives decisions at any cost, Essential heatre takes it back to where it all began. As the sun sets, the dark night approaches and the witches come out to play let yourself be taken on this tremendous journey. Leura Park Estate has hosted sell-out Shakespeare in the Vines events every year since 2011 and is delighted to present such a fabulous concept over two nights. his year Leura Park will again be staging the performance within the barrel shed and winery enclave, which ensures weather protection for patrons while featuring a terriic working winery ambience amid a backdrop of majestic cypress trees and undulating paddocks. here will be a range of food options on-site to suit all budgets and tastes. Conrad closes in on Geelong He’s played on some of the world’s biggest stages including Madison Square Garden and Coachella, and toured with the likes of Ed Sheeran and Maroon 5. Now ARIA award-winning, platinum-selling singer and songwriter Conrad Sewell is bringing his music to Geelong for the irst time. he Brisbane-born performer will take his 21-show Big World tour to local audiences at the Gateway Hotel on January 30. Sewell recalls briely passing through the region six months ago. “I had a nice day – I played basketball with one of the Supercat guys, and had a look around the city,” he said. “But I’ve never played a proper show here before so it’s really exciting.” Sewell’s irst regional tour comes during a tough time for Australia, with bushires burning near many regions he is set to visit. Determined to ind a way to help, Sewell has decided to donate all merchandise proceeds from the tour to Australia Red Cross and Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. Bringing happiness to areas impacted by ires feels like a “real special thing to do right now,” he said. “I didn’t personally have the money to donate myself … not as much as some of these other celebrities. “I thought my merch turns over a bit of money – it will allow me to donate $40,000 to $50,000.”

Music has “always” been a part of Sewell’s life since he can remember. “My mum was a big Motown fan – I would just sing along to it and imitate people,” he said. “Slowly that formed into me being able to pitch a note and hold a tune.” Now 31, Sewell has a string of successful singles to his name, including the 2015 ARIA song of the year Start Again and Firestone – a collaboration with Norwegian DJ Kygo.

‘‘

It’s the best feeling when you come out and see a - Conrad Sewell packed house

’’

But getting back on the road means “everything” to Sewell, he told the Independent. “As an artist you end up doing to all this shit you don’t want to do so it’s great to be able to spend 21 days in the country just performing,” he said. “It’s the best feeling when you come out and see a packed house and singing every word. It’s a high you can’t replace.” For those going to watch Conrad perform in Geelong, he said to expect a close and “intimate” performance. “hey’ll hear the songs and hear me sing without any bullshit behind it – it’s my voice in its rawest form,” he said. “I hope they really get to understand me as a person and an artist.”

DINE OUT Chef Ash with a curry.

’Op into Oppy’s for all the faves Norlane Hotel is best known for several things: having a classic pub menu in its bistro - named Oppy’s in homage to famous cyclist Sir Hubert Opperman; its special themed dining nights; and its friendly service. he modern, spacious bistro – also perfect for parties and other functions – ofers good-value meals for everyone – from children to seniors. here’s also a great selection of meals in the public bar. While the kids have a romp in their own play area, the grownups can eat in peace and quiet, choosing from a menu designed for wide appeal and afordability. Stir-fries and various pasta dishes are featured, alongside a choice of six seafood meals – from lathead illets and garlic prawns to the indulgent seafood platters for one or two. For starters, try the tasting plate (see the blackboard for which treats are available on the day), or tuck into chilled oysters or a chicken satay – among other options. Main course introduces a tender 250gram steak, a reef ‘n’ beef, or perhaps a tasty bourbon and BBQ pork belly. Of course, there’s a roast of the day, or

for something a bit more exotic try the Moroccan braised lamb shoulder on a bed of gourmet couscous, with a side of vegies. Dessert isn’t forgotten, with a fresh one ofered every day, accompanied by tea or cofee. Kids get dessert, too, such as frog in a pond and snakes in the snow, as well as a traditional bowl of ice cream and topping. Kids’ main meals include eight diferent choices – from a roast and parma to mini-lasagne and chicken nuggets. As for Oppy’s themed nights, it’s all about pizza and pasta on Mondays; schnitzels and parma on Tuesdays; steak on Wednesdays; burgers on hursdays; and curries on Fridays. Norlane Hotel has no less than three bars, plus TAB and Sportsbet. Parking is plentiful, the atmosphere is relaxed and everything’s in place for a fun time with family or friends any day of the week. Norlane Hotel, 2-8 Princes Highway, Norlane. Hotel opens 9am-5am daily, bistro noon-8.30pm. Inquiries: 5278 2423 or www.norlanehotel.com.au

SPORT Cats’ bats fail to ire LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club’s topsy-turvy season continued on Saturday with a disappointing loss to Carlton. he Cats won the toss and sent their hosts in to bat, a decision that proved sound early when they reduced the Blues to 3/16 as Dom McGlinchey (2/25) ripped through the top order. Carlton fought back with a couple of handy partnerships, but Hayden Butterworth (4/32) continued his good form with the ball to dismiss them for just 185. When it was Geelong’s turn to bat though, things went pear shaped as they fell to 4/10 within half of an hour of the lunch break. Again it was Butterworth (92) who rescued the side, and at 7/155 they looked like pulling of a miraculous escape. It was not to be though, eventually dismissed for 160 in a loss that saw the side drop back out of the top 8. Two day cricket returns now, with a trip to Essendon scheduled over the next two Saturdays, where nothing but a win will suice. In the Geelong Cricket Association, Grovedale’s hopes of contesting this seasons inals remain alive ater a dominant win over Newtown & Chilwell, while the three teams immediately above them on the ladder all lost. With two day cricket now scheduled for the rest of the season, the Tigers take on South

St Peters bowler Billy Ford celebrating the wicket of Richie Oliver. (Supplied)

Barwon this round in a huge game for both sides. Veteran Gareth Yelland (4/20) looks to be inding his best form again, while Jordan Moran (81*) continued his stellar season with the bat to easily chase down the Two Blues’ meagre 143 with nine wickets in hand. South Barwon lost to Lara at home, and will be desperate not to make it two in a row, as they play East Belmont ater this, making for a very hard month of cricket. Selections: South Barwon v GROVEDALE, BELL POST HILL v Leopold, NORTH GEELONG v St Josephs, Newtown & Chilwell v EAST BELMONT, Murgeboluc v LARA In division two, serious questions are starting to be asked about Geelong City, ater they

lowered their colours to St Peters last Saturday. While the boys from Richmond Crescent will still back themselves to go all the way, they must overcome Torquay this round, who also have their season on the line, as a loss here would make it very hard to play inals. he win to St Peters has breathed new life into their campaign, and their game against Highton this round will also be a ripper. With four games let, and with the ladder bunching up by the week, this season will be one of the tightest ever, making for some great cricket to be had. Selections: Manifold Heights v MARSHALL, Highton v ST PETERS, Torquay v GEELONG CITY, Modewarre v BELL PARK. And in division three, we are still no closer to having any idea what this seasons inalists might look like, with the logjam in the middle of the ladder refusing to clear itself. Newcomb & District and Alexander homson should play inals, while Waurn Ponds appear certain to miss out. But that leaves seven clubs with legitimate claims to the other two spots. St Albans Breakwater did their premiership hopes no harm with a fantastic win against Newcomb & District last week, and play Waurn Ponds Deakin, so they can go a long way to taking one of those spots with a win here. Selections: GEELONG WEST v Guild Saints, NEWCOMB & DISTRICT v homson, Corio v ALEXANDER THOMSON, BANNOCKBURN v Lethbridge, ST ALBANS BREAKWATER v Waurn Ponds Deakin

Lelo climbs in Paraguay Geelong soccer player Lelo Sejean has scored a promotion to Paraguay’s second-best national competition ater his new club moved up a league. he 29-year-old winger continues his climb up the Paraguayan football ladder ater he began playing in the country’s fourth division in 2013. He has jumped between clubs and leagues since, before transferring to Tacuary FBC last year, which scored a promotion ater placing second in the soccer-mad country’s third division. “he promotion marks an achievement for me of escalating up Paraguay’s football pyramid,” he said. “I’ve been privileged to have the opportunity to live my dream as a soccer player, but I’ve been even more privileged to have the support of my family and friends around me in Australia and in Paraguay.” he club is based in Asunción, the capital city of Paraguay. Sejean also hopes for a green and gold debut when Australia plays in the 2020 Copa America in June. he Socceroos accepted an invitation recently to play in the South American international tournament for the irst time in its 103-year history. His management contacted Football Federation Australia’s national men’s team manager Joel Freeme in hope of him being considered for the Copa America squad. Sejean ultimately dreams of representing Australia at the 2020 Olympics and the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He also competes as an elite javelin thrower, teaches English and models in his adopted home country. “I speak Paraguay’s language, Guaraní, as well as Spanish, and previously taught English at schools in Ciudad del Este and here in Asunción,” he said.

Snapper and sharks are on top of the list ON THE BITE Peri Stavropoulos he local ofshore ishing over this past week has been just superb with Snapper, Gummy sharks, Mako Sharks and Kingish all biting well. here has been plenty of Pinkie Snapper holding on reef structure between Ocean Grove and Torquay in approximately 45m of water, ishing with bait has been most efective way to target them. he Gummies have been holding in a little bit closer in about 30m of water, the trick with them is anchoring yourself just of the reef as that’s where they seem to be hanging at the moment. Makos have been hanging out a bit further sitting in 55m of water, driting baits suspended under a balloon in a burley trail is the most proven and efective way to target them however you can up your chances with a strong consistent burley trail and using fresh bait. he Kingish bite lately is still getting better by the week and this past week has been awesome, the bigger ish seem to be hanging out a bit deeper in 50m of water and the ‘rats’ are holding in shallower like 30m however you never know when that big one might show up. Brad Apps went on board Cross Country Fishing Charters managing some ripper Kingish or Live bait and Knife Jigging, the boys also managed a nice haul of Pinkie Snapper on the same grounds. Inside Port Phillip Bay is still providing plenty of good ishing options, Big King George Whiting are still on the chew right along the peninsula. St Leonards is the most popular spot with ish biting well on the change of tide with Pipis being the best bait. here are also plenty of Calamari holding in a bit closer in 3 metres of water in the same general area as the Whiting. Down along the west coast and the Tuna are on ire of Julia Reef. Trolling small skirted lures will catch you your ish however casting stickbaits and poppers to bust ups is a very efective and fun way to target them watching them smash your lures of the top! here are also plenty of Kingish around there too and they are more than willing to take top water lures. he Barwon River is producing plenty of Redin at the moment for guys walking the banks casting small sot plastics or hardbody lures providing some great local fun. David Le has been hitting the Barwon quite a bit lately and having great success.

Reduce the effects of Tinnitus Wearing professionally-fit hearing devices to correct hearing loss can reduce the annoyance and stress of tinnitus for many with hearing loss. 3. Anticipate your needs and adapt automatically New hearing devices continuously remember and learn what situations you need to hear better in. So, in a few weeks they will have learned your personal hearing preferences and automatically adjust. 4. Improve your safety You can hear warning signs that help you stay safe, such as a smoke alarm or car horn.

5. Improve personal relationships Without the important sense of hearing, you can often miss out on conversations. Regular hearing device use will help you rejoin these conversations and continue to enjoy social interations. 6. Boost your self confidence Hearing devices help people feel more in control of their lives. They can feel more motivated to participate in the activities they love and social engagements became more stimulating and rewarding. 7. Connect to other devices The latest hearing aid technology uses Bluetooth to transform your hearing aids into wireless stereo earbuds. They give you the freedom to interact with all of your devices, so you can stream a phone call, listen to iTunes or stream Netflix from your Tv or tablet. 12371405-DJ45-17
