At Wantirna College WANTIRNA College is an ambitious coeducational government secondary school in the City of Knox. Our community has high aspirations for our students which are exemplified in our school motto “Strive, Achieve and Excel”. We offer a broad range of curricular and extracurricular programs designed to provide our students with the opportunity to develop new passions, explore and broaden existing interests and to discover what their strengths are. In year 7 and 8 students study a broad based core curriculum designed to develop strong foundations in literacy and numeracy whilst providing exposure to subjects in every learning area. In year 9 and 10 students select half their subjects from a vast offering of electives whilst continuing core studies in English, Maths, Humanities and Science. We offer a broad range of VCE and VET studies alongside a quality VCAL program with year 10 students encouraged to take an early start VCE subject. We understand that the classroom isn’t the sole domain for learning and provide extensive extracurricular offerings. Our annual school production is legendary and involves students from years 7-12. Always a musical, students can develop their talents as actors, dancers or singers and learn the technical aspects of putting on a show. Likewise the instrumental music, sports and camps programs promote the development of the whole student and encourage students to develop lifelong friendships. Whether it is in the classroom or beyond we focus on quality teaching, all of the time. Classes are built on a foundation of positive, respectful relationships between students and teachers which places student wellbeing and learning at the centre. We expect our teachers to know where each individual student is in their learning journey and to prepare work that will allow each student to make learning progress. As a strong, close knit community our students are motivated and our teachers are focussed on improving outcomes. With magnificent views of the Dandenong Ranges our school has spacious, modern well maintained buildings and grounds. Our College Council has, and will continue to invest significant funds to further continue to ensure we have fantastic facilities that promote learning. Our

library is the hub of the school and is undergoing a transformation to become a true 21st century learning space. Our students love The Orchard, our 200 seat indoor cafeteria, and enjoy our new undercover outdoor sporting facilities. We believe that the best schools work in partnership with parents to support the physical, social, emotional and intellectual development of young people. As such we invite parents to book a tour for themselves and their children to come and see us in action. Kevin Murphy Principal

Our Years 7-9 programs build foundations for success. We emphasise core literacy and numeracy skills across the curriculum, with students accessing Spanish as their language study. Students have expanding opportunities to refine pathways by selecting an increasing number of electives in Year 9 and beyond. Substantial research has been conducted into engaging Year 9 students, preparing them for the demands of their final years of school. In response, alongside our school data, we have shaped a Year 9 program to develop the academic, creative, physical and emotional aspects of our students through engaging, inquiry based learning experiences, fostering independence and reigniting a passion for learning. Students have the opportunity to participate in Leadership Development programs, City Experience, the Duke of Edinburgh Award and community based projects. Transitioning into Years 10-12, opportunities to refine pathways open, and students are provided a range of subjects from all areas of the VCE/VET and VCAL curriculums. Year 10 students are encouraged to undertake VCE/VET units in preparation for the rigors of a full VCE/VET program.

Why choose a Girls’ School? PARENTS often face conflicting advice when deciding whether to send their child to a singlesex or coeducational school. There are more single-sex schools for girls than for boys in each of the three Australian educational sectors: government, Catholic and independent. As a consequence, more boys than girls are enrolled in some coeducational schools. So as a parent, how do you decide which school is best for your child? And, importantly, what do you actually want out of a school? For example, is the focus on achieving good grades, or about making sure your child fits in and feels accepted? There is no straightforward answer, but research has revealed there are some key things to consider when choosing a school which might help determine where to send your child. SINGLE-SEX SCHOOLS Most of Australia’s single-sex schools are found in the fee-paying non-government sector. This means that financially secure parents have a wider choice of schools open to them. Of the small number of single-sex schools in the government sector, many are academically selective. Research <http://www.aare.edu.au/ datapublications/2007/for07148.pdf> suggests that girls who attend single-sex schools are more confident about themselves as learners in subjects such as mathematics and physics than in coeducational schools. In the absence of boys, the girls also feel less constrained in engaging in classroom discussions. For boys attending single-sex or coeducational schools, their confidence levels in physics and mathematics are found to be equally high, and they boisterously engage in classroom discourse. Girls’ schools provide a fantastic opportunity to educate, inspire and nurture the girls of today, who will be the leaders of tomorrow. In a single sex school, every girl is able to be heard. The curriculum is tailored to the needs of girls, which provides the opportunity to develop and excel. In a coeducational environment, girls can be “drowned out by the boys”, whereas in single-sex schools can captain the debating team, choose to study physics or be part of a cricket team. Highlighted below are some of the many

16

Secondary Education

Without the burden of subject stereotyping, girls are free to pursue academic excellence. benefits of choosing a single-sex school for your daughter. ROLE MODELS AND LEADERSHIP Every single leadership role in the school is filled by girls, including the SRC representatives, class captains, sports captains, school captains. The girls learn about various influential women and the roles that they have played in History. ACADEMIC ADVANTAGES Research has consistently shown that girls perform better academically in all girls environments. Without the burden of subject stereotyping, girls are free to pursue academic excellence. A TAILORED CURRICULUM Girls learn differently from boys. In most girls school the teachers receive special training so that they are able to tailor their classes and curriculum to the needs of the students. This means that the students are more likely to be engaged during class and therefore are able to achieve to their potential. Sport and your child ONLY six out of 10 children aged between five and 14 years participate in sport outside of school, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The Australian Health Survey conducted in April 2012 found that 25 per cent of Australian children and teenagers, aged five to 17 years, are overweight or obese, indicating that we need to foster a more sports-minded culture that encourages children to be physically active. People who are active dramatically reduce their risk of many diseases, including heart disease and osteoporosis. Regular exercise is also known to reduce the risk of emotional problems such as anxiety and depression. Habits are established early in life and evidence suggests that physically active children are more likely to mature into physically active adults. BENEFITS OF SPORT FOR CHILDREN Some of the many benefits of sport participation for children include: ■ reduced risk of obesity ■ increased cardiovascular fitness ■ healthy growth of bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons ■ improved coordination and balance ■ a greater ability to physically relax and, therefore, avoid the complications of chronic muscular tension (such as headache or back ache) ■ improved sleep ■ mental health benefits, such as greater confidence ■ improved social skills ■ improved personal skills, including cooperation and leadership. Reducing inactivity may be more effective in achieving overall increases in energy levels in young children than putting the emphasis on increasing involvement in sporting activities. Taking steps to reduce children’s sedentary time is important. SEDENTARY PURSUITS AND CHILDREN Around 40 per cent of Australian children don’t participate in sport at all. Common sedentary activities that compete with physical activity include: ■ homework ■ computer games ■ internet use ■ television.

26

Secondary Education

The Australian Government recommends that: ‘Children and young people should participate in at least 60 minutes (and up to several hours) of moderate to vigorous-intensity physical activity every day.’ ■ ‘Children and young people should not spend more than two hours a day using electronic media for entertainment (such as computer games, internet, TV), particularly during daylight hours.’ These recommendations are a guide to the minimum level of physical activity required for good health. According to the Bureau of Statistics, over the 12 months prior to April 2012 in Australia, 1.7 million or 60 per cent of children aged 5 to 14 years participated in at least one sport outside of school hours that had been organised by a school, club or association. Participation amongst boys (949,000) exceeded that of girls (727,000), both overall and within each age group category. Children aged 9 to 11 years were most likely to participate in sport (66 per cent). The three most popular organised sports for boys in 2011 to 2012 were soccer (22 per cent of total), swimming and Australian rules football. For girls, swimming/diving (19 per cent of total) and netball were predominant. ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO BE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE Parents can help their children to be physically active in a number of ways, including: ■ Lead by example – be physically active yourself. ■ Make sure that some family outings offer opportunities for physical activity, such as playing sport together. ■ Encourage your child to walk or ride their bicycle for short trips, rather than rely on you to drive them. ■ Support your child’s efforts in sport. Make sure you’re there at each match, cheering them on from the sidelines. ■ Set time limits on sedentary activities like computer games and television. ■ Consult with your child’s school on ways to encourage greater participation in sports and physical activity. Why choose a public secondary school? WE ALL have a stake in building a public secondary school system that prepares the next generation of productive citizens and workers. Our nation’s economic and social prosperity depends on this. It is essential that all students, regardless of their family background, have access to an excellent local public school in order to reach their potential and contribute to our society. The Victorian Association of State Secondary Principals has consulted widely with its members, asking them to identify what they consider to be the most crucial elements required to build and sustain a thriving public secondary school system. They identified the following key elements required to improve the public secondary school system: COMMUNITY EXPECTATIONS ■ Communities take pride in their local public secondary school and are actively involved in improving it ■ Every public secondary school is the school of choice for local families, thus helping to strengthen neighbourhoods and enhance social cohesion ■ The Education Minister and senior department officials are passionate advocates for the system they operate: the public school system

STUDENT OUTCOMES Every school has high expectations of its students and teachers, and pursues a highperformance culture ■ All students make progress in academic achievement and social skills ■ A student’s educational achievement is not determined by their socio-economic background ■ Twenty-first century learning skills, (e.g. problem solving, curiosity, teamwork, perseverance) as well as literacy and numeracy, are emphasised in school programs, enabling a more comprehensive comparison of student performance at local, national and international level. At this time of the year, families are making important decisions about choosing a secondary school for their child. There’s a common view that if you send your child to a private school, your child will get better results. But the facts show that this is wrong. A recent review of almost 30 academic studies revealed public schools achieve similar student outcomes to Catholic and independent schools across a range of education indicators. (Cobbold, 2015) ■

Continued from page 28 The review showed there were no significant differences between the results of students from public, Catholic and independent schools in national and international tests and in university completion rates. And in the first year of university, students from public schools outperform other students - they achieve higher grades in their first year of university than students from Catholic and independent schools. As a leader in the public school system I believe it’s important that families know about this information because it can help inform their decision-making. Public schools are just as good as private schools in the area that matters most developing your child’s potential. The review is one of many pieces of educational research showing that students from the same social background do as well in public schools as they do in Catholic or independent schools. There are other good reasons to consider enrolling your child in a public school. They include the following: ■ Public schools are great value for money compared with private schools, which charge families up to $30,000 each year in tuition fees per child. Tuition at public schools is free, with families paying for books and some essential items. ■ Children in public schools learn to get on with a wide mixture of students from different backgrounds. These advanced social skills cooperation, empathy, problem solving - are increasingly prized in the modern workplace. They equip students for success in life and in work. ■ Public schools are neighbourhood schools. Enrolling your child in a school within walking or riding distance to home makes it easier for you to know who your child’s friends are, to make friends with other local parents and to forge closer links with your school and your community. High quality teaching is one of the biggest factors that influence student learning. That’s why public schools are intensifying their efforts to enhance the skills of their teachers through mentoring, peer and student feedback and other

Lighthouse Christian College has turned thirty (30) and with an established history and reputation of being UIF $ISJTUJBO DIPJDF GPS FYDFMMFODF JO FEVDBUJPO we enter B OFX EFDBEF with confidence. Innovation is pivotal to our mission of Christian teaching and learning and 2020 will see UIF $PMMFHF soar to new heights. Deputy Principal (Academic) Mr David Lepileo describes our innovative and best practice Christian teaching and learning model as follows: Teaching and learning has shifted and so to nurture students into the future they need to discern information and think for themselves. Being UIF $ISJTUJBO DIPJDF GPS FYDFMMFODF JO FEVDBUJPO, Lighthouse Christian College will be introducing new and exciting changes within its curriculum and pedagogy. Our pedagogy will have a deliberate approach to 21st century teaching practice, with our teaching style to be student focused and centered on skills such as, critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. Likewise, our approach to learning takes into consideration the whole child and therefore our Sub-School’s will have dedicated Chaplains and counseling services to help keep our students feeling safe, happy and enjoying learning. Another exciting teaching and learning initiative taking place is the increased allocation of specialist teachers within years 5 and 6 Mathematics and English. VCE teachers will help students in the lower levels develop their knowledge and skills earlier so as to build their understanding for progressive growth. Similarly, Lighthouse will integrate STEM across Prep to Year 8, this will include RobPtics and computer systems. The Year 9 and 10 STEM program together with the Year 11 and 12 VCAL program will engage them in a dynamic ‘Maker Space’, where they will be working on 3D printers, laser cutters and contemporary technologies to help them build skills for future success. We appreciate the funding we have received from the "VTUSBMJBO GovernmentT -PDBM 4DIPPMT $PNNVOJUZ 'VOE for cutting edge technology UP TVQQPSU TUVEFOU MFBSOJOH BOE FOHBHFNFOU All of these changes will add to our relational culture and build on our strong educational standards underpinned by our Biblical Christian worldview. Six Reasons Why All-Girls schools are different CHOOSING a secondary school is one of the big decisions faced by parents. There are many factors to consider and visitors to Mater Christi College often ask about the advantages of an allgirls school. “We believe that girls learn differently to boys and that they are motivated and respond in different ways. Our student-centred culture celebrates those differences and thrives on the ‘can do’ energy of girls,” said Principal, Mary FitzGerald. The Alliance of Girls Schools (Australasia) has summarised some of the key research findings about single-sex education. Here are 6 reasons why an all-girls school is different: 1. Academic advantages: Girls in girls’ schools achieve significantly stronger academic results than any other group in Australia. Girls are free to pursue academic excellence and each achievement is celebrated. 2. Role models and leadership: All the leadership roles in girls’ schools are filled by girls. Younger students see these female leaders as role models and learn that girls can lead in any field. 3. Counteracting negative influences: Girls can work through the challenges of adolescence without fear of embarrassment or harassment.

42

Secondary Education

4. A tailored curriculum: Teachers tailor their practice and curriculum for girls. In a collaborative and supportive environment, girls are free to participate in class without the teacher’s attention being dominated by boys. 5. Countless opportunities: Girls at girls’ schools enjoy not only equal opportunity but every opportunity. There is no gender stereotyping with subject selection. Girls are able and encouraged to explore a career or future in any area. 6. Global citizens: Girls’ schools prepare students to be citizens of the world, using rapidly developing technology and forming connections with girls in other countries. There is an emphasis on social justice and community as girls are encouraged to make connections with others beyond the classroom. Mater Christi College is easily accessible by dedicated buses and public transport links to most Eastern and South Eastern suburbs and only 5 minutes’ walk from Belgrave Station. A visit to the College will enable your family to witness a vibrant and inclusive community where girls feel safe and build supportive lifelong friendships. Grossek’s View Grossek’s view SCHOOL CHOICE DILEMMAS THE reception area was unusually quiet for a Monday morning, or so she thought, as she waited patiently for her appointment with the school principal. Mrs Tonkin’s son, Julian, was about to graduate from his local primary school after seven years. Seven tough years she thought. Julian was by no stretch of the imagination an academically inclined student. In fact, quite the opposite. To make matters worse, his small circle of friends, inspired more by desperation than by choice, she thought, led him more often than not to detention classes than anywhere else. “Good morning, Mrs Tonkin. Pleased to see you.” Ms Carpenter, the principal, smiled, as she mostly did. “What can I do for you?” Jolted from her thoughts, Mrs Tonkin fumbled for a moment. She hated those fumbling moments. They made her feel inadequate, just as they had throughout her childhood, a childhood dominated by the oppressive nature of her father. Guilt was in there too. Julian’s awkwardness in conversation she was sure didn’t help him much in making friends with better peers. He must have inherited that fumbling conversational trait from her. “Oh, yes.” She stammered. “I……er,” damn it. There I go again. Ms Carpenter was kindly, always kindly. “Take your time.” Once seated in Ms Carpenter’s office, and thoughts of her own awkwardness as a child no longer front and centre in her mind, words came more freely to Mrs Tonkin. In fact they burst out. “I’m worried about Julian next year, transitioning to secondary school. He isn’t a confident kid. He gets into trouble so much and I worry about him. His father worries about him too, I think.” Julian rarely saw his father since his parents split, acrimoniously so, several years ago. Mrs Tonkin rarely spoke with him, and, in truth, was relieved. He was so much like her father. Goodness knows why she married him. At least now she was

54

Secondary Education

free of him, though popping him into this conversation right now might give her some ammunition in her quest to find the right secondary school for Julian next year. “In what way?” replied Ms Carpenter, her tone deliberately sounding puzzled, yet reassuring in an understated way. This was not the first time that she was meeting with a parent anxious about their child’s transition to secondary schooling. In fact, somewhat to her frustration, it was an increasing phenomenon. Anxiety, as Ms Carpenter knew only too well, was surging through society, almost unchecked. The consequences for her, in her role as a school principal, were quite profound. “Well,” began Mrs Tonkin, her confidence boosted, by Ms Carpenter’s unwavering smile. “I’m not sure that the school to which Julian is zoned is right for him. You see most of the boys that he hangs out with are going there next year and they all get into trouble here, nearly all the time. I was hoping that Julian could get away from them.” Mrs Tonkin paused, as much to catch her breath as to think of what to say next. Ms Carpenter’s smile had disappeared by now, replaced by a nothingness sort of expression, one which Mrs Tonkin could not read. “Julian is a follower and he needs a fresh start. I was hoping you might be able to recommend another local government school that might suit him better.” Her voice trailed off noticeably. Ms Carpenter winced ever so slightly. Clearing her throat, knowing that she had no good news for Mrs Tonkin, Ms Carpenter attempted to deflect her concerns. “But, it’s a great school with a wonderful student wellbeing program. Besides which, it’s our main feeder secondary school and we have a longstanding excellent transition program in operation with them.” Mrs Tonkin remained visibly unimpressed. “He needs a break from those other boys.”

Continued from page 54 Ms Carpenter understood exactly, but there was virtually nothing within her power to assist Mrs Tonkin; not given the clarity of the enrolment procedures now in place for government. Due to rapidly rising enrolments all local secondary schools were strictly enforcing the procedures – with only one accepting enrolments from out of their zone. She wasn’t sure that Mrs Tonkin would be likely to seek to enrol Julian at that school. It was quite some distance from where he lived and the school’s declining enrolments would be of concern. Her silence prompted Mrs Tonkin; actually needled her. “So what are our choices?” “Well, you can always appeal Julian’s placement.” “And what are our chances of success?” disappointment creeping as rapidly into Mrs Tonkin’s voice as was a cocktail of helplessness and frustration overwhelming the principal. “I don’t know really,” she replied carefully, at which point the school bell rang. “Look, I suggest you make an appointment with the principal of your son’s zoned secondary college and explain your concerns. From our end, we will certainly alert them to the challenges your son faces socially next year in moving forward.” Ms Carpenter paused, just long enough to absorb the disappointment in Mrs Tonkin’s eyes. “Don’t worry too much Mrs Tonkin, I’m sure that we can work this all out to Julian’s best advantage.” Mrs Tonkin rose from her seat, shook her head and started to say something before the stumbling fumbling for words took control. “Thank you Ms Carpenter for your time.” Ms Carpenter saw Mrs Tonkin out, watching her crestfallen figure disappear in the distance. Slowly she returned to her office, sat down, then almost immediately stood up, went to the staffroom, poured herself a black coffee and returned. A flood of thoughts engulfed her as she sat quietly in the privacy of her office, doors closed. She could empathise with Mrs Tonkin. What would she, herself, do in similar circumstances?

Secondary Education

Probably much the same. Yet, on the other hand, as a principal of a public school in Victoria, systemic considerations could not be ignored. What was the best advice could she give to parents, anxious to ensure the best choice of school for their child transitioning to a secondary school setting? That was a question she had asked herself many times over. Do your homework – and if your choice is a public school, your neighbourhood school is your starting point. What sort of fit is it educationally and socially for your child? Word of mouth is valuable too – what do other families think of the school? Check the school out for yourself. It’s amazing what you can learn about a school’s culture and operations from a visit. Whatever you end up deciding, remember that no matter what school your child ends attending, there will be great times and tough times. Don’t beat yourself up too much in searching for the impossible. If only! Her coffee finished, Ms Carpenter sighed, and turned her attention to other matters. Preshil ESTABLISHED in 1931, Preshil is Australia’s oldest progressive school. Nestled across two campuses in Kew, Preshil is coeducational, secular and entirely independent. A deliberately small school, Preshil welcomes children from three years of age into the Kindergarten right through to the completion of their secondary education in Year 12. A confident sense of self-worth is integral to our vision of success for every child, with students supported to challenge ideas, think critically, make ethical judgements and set their own goals. At our core remains an unshakeable commitment to encourage all children to set and achieve their own goals, and to be respected as individuals in their own right. Preshil is committed to nurturing and challenging our children in an atmosphere that inspires creativity and independent thinking in all areas of life. The relationships between students and their teachers are sincere, respectful and focused on achieving outstanding learning outcomes, trust and a genuine regard for individuality. The Preshil approach to schooling is not competitive, and uses neither the fear of failure nor the threat of punishment to motivate children. Whilst remaining academically rigorous, we continue as a school that places genuine, respectful relationships at the centre of its operations. The belief that education should prepare students to be active, engaged and open-minded contributors to their communities (both local and global) has led to Preshil implementing the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programmes school-wide, providing a continuum of education. The IB philosophy perfectly aligns with Preshil’s focus on intellectual challenge, inquiry and conceptually-driven learning. In the Primary Years Programme (Kindergarten – Grade 6), the IB challenges children to become active participants in their own education, respecting their agency, nurturing their strengths and encouraging creativity. Through an inquiryled curriculum, children explore local and global issues through the lenses of different subjects, imbuing them with the confidence to question and think critically and creatively about the world around them The Middle Years Programme (MYP) encourages the development of Year 7-10 students

68

Secondary Education

as active, compassionate and lifelong learners. The MYP facilitates an intellectually vibrant curriculum that respects and supports the individual learner. The Programme emphasises authentic challenge and creativity where students are motivated to identify and make connections between traditional subjects and the tangible world. The Diploma Programme (DP) is a globallyrecognised alternative to the state-based Year 12 certificates and prepares students to meet tertiary study and their chosen career paths with the maturity and depth of understanding required to flourish. The DP liberates students from a rigid, competitive curriculum; it respects the needs of the whole person, celebrating independent learning and individual choice. Preshil graduates have the courage to question, embrace their individuality and are responsible and dynamic global citizens.

High School Students Losing Maths Motivation MANY students, particularly girls, are “switching off” in mathematics in the middle years of schooling and into high school, says a new study. Together with researchers from the University of Sydney in an Australian Research Council funded study, Dr Rebecca Collie of the University of New South Wales (UNSW) tracked 194 high school students’ engagement in maths over a five year period starting in grade 6 or 7. In this time, participating students’ aspirations and engagement in maths declined. While boys and girls had the same initial level of aspiration, girls’ aspirations in maths declined more rapidly than boys’. Within these broad trends, there were ebbs and flows and hints of what might help. “Students at different points along the way are switching on and switching off,” said Dr Collie. In her view, this shows the need for education interventions in mathematics at multiple points in students’ journeys through school. Dr Collie suggests that interventions should target students’ motivation, since motivational factors such as seeing value in maths and believing in one’s own ability to succeed were strongly linked to more positive trajectories of aspirations and engagement. One method that may help, said Dr Collie says, is building up students’ sense of control by helping them “see the link between their efforts and their achievement.”

72

Secondary Education

“If disengagement or flagging aspirations are evident, there is a good evidence base for practices that can address this,” she said. “For example, research into learned helplessness and effort withdrawal identifies the importance of promoting greater control in students’ academic lives. Due to chronically low levels of control, students reduce their aspirations and can come to abandon effort.” Similarly, a growth mindset may be helpful. “A growth mindset refers to the belief that our competence is malleable and that effort can help it grow,” said Dr Collie. “Teaching students that their competence can grow even in the face of challenge and setback in learning is one approach for promoting a growth mindset.” Participants were drawn from one coeducational and three single-sex girls’ schools. This meant that 80% of participants were girls. Dr Collie said this presented a particular opportunity in this study, given the known reluctance of girls’ to engage in and continue with STEM subjects in senior high school. St. Peter’s College CLYDE NORTH CAMPUS & CRANBOURNE CAMPUS ‘Developing the skills today to thrive in tomorrow’s world’ When selecting a secondary school for your child, you need to feel confident in not only what that school can deliver in Year 7, but how the school can provide a stimulating learning environment across the six years. It’s a big decision. Our desire is for students to run excitedly through St. Peter’s College gates to commence their secondary schooling as a Year 7 student, and walk out at the end of Year 12, with confidence, a sense of purpose, and a feeling of positivity about their future lives. Our 21st Century learner will need a skill-set of: critical thinking, effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively & creativity. St. Peter’s College strives to provide opportunities for our students to engage and excel in all of these areas. At St. Peter’s College we are a proudly Catholic community with a focus on Christ at the centre of our learning. Servicing both the Clyde North and

At St. Peter’s College we continue to: aspire all to lead in faith, be guided with love and inspire through learning. Our School Motto provides us with the inspiration and permission to be ambitious as we strive to provide all students with the knowledge and skill set to make a contribution to our world. It is in this context that we embark on a new school improvement agenda where we will: Take courage,… and…. Be not afraid (Mt 14:27) Mr Chris Black Principal

enrolments have increased by over 200 students. The College draws students from a wide section of the south-eastern suburbs. We provide an approved curriculum framework, based upon the Victorian Curriculum, which is differentiated to meet student needs. Senior students may study a wide range of Victorian CertiďŹ cate of Education (VCE) subjects and the Victorian CertiďŹ cate of Applied Learning (VCAL). Students are able to access Vocational Education and Training (VET) subjects off-site. Westall Secondary College AT WESTALL Secondary College our philosophy is based on meeting the needs and wants of our students and we endeavour to find the perfect balance between the explicit teaching of key kills and giving the students the opportunity to follow their passions. This sounds like an obvious concept, but what does it mean at Westall? PERSONALISED LEARNING We meet the needs of students by ensuring the learning is at the appropriate level for every student in every subject. Students are engaged in literacy and numeracy in a challenging manner to ensure that they are in their ‘wobble zone’. WELLBEING Our school values around ‘CARE’ are visible in everything we do and we want every student to be the best version of themselves. We have a calm, supportive environment at Westall and this calmness provides an amazing setting to complete your secondary education. PATHWAYS We know that we only have the students for a short time so everything we do is focussed on preparing them for future success. The programs we offer are personalised and give students the opportunity to learn skills that can be transferred into all walks of life. LITERACY Literacy is the number one focus of our College. We believe that ALL students should reach their

88

Secondary Education

optimum level of literacy by Year 10 so that they are well prepared for their desired pathway, be it VCE, VCAL or the workforce. Our explicit, targeted teaching of key literacy skills across all subjects enable our students to grasp concepts and ideas more successfully. NUMERACY AND STEM Numeracy is our other major building block for learning. We have trained STEM staff, a partnership with Deakin University and a new STEM program available at all year levels. AIM HIGH The Aim High program is an opportunity for students working at/or above the expected level, in one or more subjects, to be extended and challenged. Students are selected into this program based on NAPLAN, Grade 6 Reports and evidence of a high level of effort. Aim High is an extension and advancement program for all students, in every classroom. ICREATE We are proud to offer iCreate, a unique, elective based program where the classes are made of students from a range of age groups. This provides a great opportunity for students to integrate more fully into the Westall Learning Community. VCE AND VCAL RESULTS We have won a number of state-wide VCAL awards in recent years and in 2017, our VCE Dux scored 98.

Yarra Hills Secondary College YARRA HILLS Secondary College is a multicampus government secondary school in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria Australia. We have two campuses, a year 7 – 10 Campus at Mt Evelyn and a Mooroolbark Campus with both year 7 – 10 and senior (year 11/12) precincts on the one site. Current enrolments are around 900 students and have been rising over the last four years. The Mt Evelyn Campus typically accepts students from the local Mt Evelyn area, nearby Lilydale, Silvan and towns further down the Warburton Highway in the Yarra Valley, including such areas as Wandin, Seville, Woori Yallock and beyond. Students attending this campus progress to the Mooroolbark Campus for their senior studies. Bus transport is made available to do this. The Mooroolbark Campus directly serves the Mooroolbark, Lilydale, Kilsyth, Montrose, Croydon and Bayswater areas. Direct local transport exists linking each of these areas to the campus through either the Cambridge Rd/ Hawthory Rd bus stops at the rear of the school or Hull Rd and Mooroolbark Station near the wmain entrance. Yarra Hills has an extensive online curriculum available through the use of ‘Moodle’, which is accessible to staff, students and parents. This provides students with 24/7 access to classwork, revision and assessment materials. As well as providing a differentiated curriculum to challenge students at all academic levels, Yarra Hills has also created an online extension program that allows students who are identified as ‘well above’ standard levels to undertake further instruction in a series of rich, open-ended learning tasks. With the recent opening of the Yarra Ranges ‘Tech School’ Discovery Centre at Lilydale Lakeside, Yarra Hills has been one of a select group of schools to help develop and access specialist programs in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) available on the site. Yarra Hills is renowned for providing a wide selection of pathways for all students, successfully offering a large complement of VCE studies, with students in the most recent graduating group receiving placements in a large range of post-

90

Secondary Education

secondary institutions, including the coveted Medicine and Law. VET (Vocational Education & Training) and VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) School Based Apprenticeship Training is also available, with Yarra Hills being the Lead School for the atEast VCAL consortium. atEAST currently provides work for around 250 students from 10 schools across the Eastern Region of Melbourne. Yarra Hills’ students in this program regularly receive industry awards for excellence. Yarra Hills has an extensive Performing Arts program, including several highly successful Concert Bands led by the Director of the Australian Youth Band, Mr Richard O’Toole. These groups perform regularly across the state and in alternate years undertake an international tour. Last year’s Music Group travelled to New Zealand. Additionally, we have singing troupes and an excellent annual College Production which involves a large number of students. The Outdoor Education Program is also renowned throughout the wider community, providing students the opportunity to experience learning beyond the classroom. The College has its own buses, canoes/kayaks, diving/snorkelling gear and a full set of camping/hiking equipment. A Scholarship Program also is offered at Year 7 level in the areas of Academic, Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Sporting Excellence. Applications for these are available through the Campus Offices, or at our College Information Nights.
