Two Blues turn teal Former Sale of the Century co-host and long-time cricket mum Nicky Buckley will don teal next Saturday in a bid to hit ovarian cancer for six. Buckley became an ambassador for Ovarian Cancer Australia after the disease took her mother Joan at age 67, more than a decade ago. “It’s devastating when it’s your mum and all of a sudden you hear those dreadful words,” the Torquay local said. Buckley will host Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club’s Ladies Day on February 29, featuring cocktails, auctions and live music from former Australian Idol contestant Kim Cooper. “I get to tell my story, which is all about raising awareness of the signs and symptoms,” Buckley said. “Someone might be there whose mum, sister or girlfriend has complained about those things and it might trigger them to get it checked out.” The event will raise money toward research and development of an early detection test, Buckley said. Almost 1000 women die of ovarian cancer in Australia each year, according Ovarian Cancer Australia. Details: www. two-blues.com.au Luke Voogt

Geelong’s missing millions By Luke Voogt Geelong is missing out on “hundreds of millions of dollars” due to government not recognising it as a “growth zone”, according to a former development institute chair. Tom Roe, former Geelong chair of the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA), took aim at a one-of state government tax on developers in rapidly-growing areas on Melbourne’s fringe to raise money for infrastructure. “Ludicrously” the Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution did not apply to
Geelong developers despite a local “population explosion”, the Barwon Heads investment banker said. “I just don’t think it’s fair that Geelong is missing out,” Mr Roe said. Recently, respected demographer Bob Birrell predicted Geelong’s population could surge to 400,000 by 2041. Armstrong Creek is one of the fastest growing areas in regional Victoria and Geelong’s council has plans for 110,000 new residents in growth areas north and west of the city. A Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution for these areas could put “hundreds of millions
of dollars back into Geelong’s cofers”, Mr Roe said. “With the right level of tax, we’re potentially even talking about billions of dollars. “And yet, Geelong’s growth is not being seen in the same light as areas of Melbourne which are also experiencing strong growth. “hose communities are getting huge beneits from the Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution. Why shouldn’t the Geelong community be entitled to the same sort of support?” he contribution currently applies to the municipalities of Cardinia, Casey, Hume,
Melton, Mitchell, Whittlesea and Wyndham. Under the contribution, developers pay between $97,360 and $115,640 per hectare for title transfers, subdivisions, building permits and signiicant acquisitions meeting certain criteria. “Obviously some property developers and landowners looking to capitalise on Geelong’s boom won’t be happy with the prospect of paying a levy like this,” Mr Roe said. “But … other developers and landowners enjoying major gains in other parts of Victoria are paying the levy and still making a proit.” Mr Roe ran for Geelong council in 2017.

Patient’s 10 cents on new centre By Luke Voogt Bell Park toddler Ollie Bingham is one of about a dozen patients each day who have used Barwon Health North’s Urgent Care Centre since its opening. Ollie’s mum, Tiana Dawes, called her mother in panic when she discovered a 10-cent coin lodged in his throat. “I was about to head into town, but mum told me Barwon Health North was open and it was closer,” she said. “We came here and by that time he had swallowed the coin.
“It was two days before he was due for a tonsillectomy, so that was my main concern.” Ms Dawes had anticipated waiting hours at Geelong’s public emergency department as a less-urgent patient, she explained. “he (Barwon Health North) staf were great. hey made us feel welcome and took us straight through.” A few weeks since opening, the facility is treating an average of 10 patients each weekday and about 16 patients daily on weekends, according to Barwon Health. “his number is increasing each week as knowledge of the service grows,” said Carol
Mioduchowski, Barwon Health’s northern area manager. She said as of February 16, Barwon Health North staf had completed more than 1200 imaging exams averaging about 250 a week. Renal services are due to open in March, and specialist maternity, paediatric, chronic and complex care clinics are scheduled to begin in April. he urgent care centre is open seven days, from 2pm to 10pm. Ms Mioduchowski said there were plans to increase the hours “in line with demand” in the future.

‘Ham stars’ and cheese champs Geelong ‘ham stars’ and ‘cheese champions’ will have a shot at glory next month with entries opening for the Lara Food and Wine Festival’s culinary competitions. Organiser Gail homas urged local smallgoods maestros to get their entries in. “We’re just getting the word out now that if people have got homemade smallgoods, save a piece and get your entries in,” she said. Gail was hoping to build on last year’s festival which attracted 25 entries for the Hamstar of Lara and about another 40 for the Cheese Champion competition.
he Hamstar of Lara, in its seventh year, is named in honour of late pioneering smallgoods producer Angel Cardoso. he Spanish expat came to Lara as an aeronautical engineer but later gained a reputation as a maker of Australia’s inest Spanish-style smallgoods. “He was probably the irst one to be making really specialised jamon and chorizo,” Gail said. “He always used to say the cold winds that came from Ballarat down through the You Yangs were perfect for what he was doing.” he competition is open to makers of any
homemade smallgoods, from salami and prosciutto to capocollo and salchica. “he biggest problem is people make (cured meats) in winter and by the time the competition comes around they’ve eaten it all!” Gail said. Entries are open until March 10 for the Hamstar of Lara and March 19 for the Cheese Champion at www.larafoodandwinefestival. com.au. Winners will be announced during the festival at Pirra Homestead, Lara, on March 22.

Monster Fair draws novel sleuths By Luke Voogt Like thousands of Geelong bookworms, Freda Wright loves to open a thriller novel and pursue mysterious villains through the streets of Victorian England. “If I start reading a book I can’t put it down or do anything else!” the maths teacher of 50 years said. “I love the problem-solving – I have to solve it before [the detective does].” he Whittington local urged fellow bibliophiles to indulge their passion and score a bargain at Geelong West Rotary’s Monster Book Fair, beginning today.
‘‘
They take you into a world you might not know about - Freda Wright
’’
Funds raised go to a library list of Rotary causes, from local patient transport and supporting bushire victims, to mentoring students or sending an at-risk teen to walk the Kokoda Trail, Freda said. “It’s amazing to think that by simply buying and reading some $1 and $2 books you’re helping to change lives – just a small contribution but such a big result.” Dozens of club members were busily sorting through thousands of titles for the fair, Freda said. “It’s a huge community efort and the libraries are very kind to us when they’re clearing things out because they’re old.” Freda’s love of 19th Century detective novels began when she was growing up in Birmingham, England. “hey take you into a world you might not

know about,” she said of the novels. “I don’t have a huge amount of time to read [but] I’m looking forward to retirement when I’ve got time to read them.”
Freda has taught at Matthew Flinders for 43 years, ater moving to Geelong with husband Graham, who died ive years ago. Her golf-loving and kind husband enjoyed
gardening, but was never a big reader before succumbing to early-onset dementia 13 years ago, Freda remembered. “He would read a magazine if it had pictures,” she laughed. “He used to joke, ‘I never planned to marry a teacher’.” She cared for her husband for eight years while working full-time. “hat was a hard journey. I look back and I don’t really know how I made it through, but I did,” she said “It [dementia] made him feel extremely unsafe and isolated because people didn’t understand the efect it had on him. “He used to get very angry if he couldn’t get out what he wanted to say.” Freda credits students and staf at her school for helping her through that “tragic” period. “hey’re all beautiful young people, they just need someone to care for them – that’s all.” Ater Graham’s death, Freda joined Geelong West Rotary Club to help others, alongside “like-minded people”. “hat’s what Rotary is all about,” she said. She also joined Geelong Welsh Ladies Choir, started going to local theatre and, more recently, hoped to begin supporting a refugee in their education. As president of Geelong West Rotary Club Freda is focusing on the Monster Book Fair. he club’s two annual book fairs raised more than $50,000 combined each year, she said. his month’s fair runs 9am-8pm today, 9am-5pm on Saturday and 9am-2pm on Sunday at Geelong West Town Hall. Geelong readers could ind the missing piece to their libraries amid mountains of books, Freda said. “A lot of people come and they’ll ind the one book they need to make a set.”

Tanks take aim at local design
An Australian Defence contract puts Geelong team on the radar, Luke Voogt reports.
T
anks, missile launchers and even attack helicopters have taken aim at a Geelong-designed target system that recently won a defence contract worth more than $1 million. “You name it – it’s shot at it,” said Michael Fielding, who led a Deakin University backed-team designing the system. “Hundreds, if not thousands, of rounds have ired at it during its development and testing.” At the end of 2017, soldiers shot two high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) Javelin missiles at a target attached to the system. “he target was written of but the rest was ine,” Dr Fielding said. he federal government recently awarded a contract for the team to supply six RAIDER Mobile Moving Target Systems to the Australian Army. he robot-driven target system mimics armoured vehicles, including tanks, reaches 40km/h and can generate a heat signature for weapons such as the Javelin, which use thermal targeting. “As the targeting systems for weapons platforms become more advanced, the targets need to be too,” Dr Fielding said. Unlike previous targets, the RAIDER could create scenarios for soldiers limited only by a commander’s imagination and the terrain, he said. “If you’re talking a vehicle-style target, that’s where the RAIDER really stands out amongst the crowd.” Previously, vehicle-style targets were either static or moved on a ixed path, making them repetitive and easily predictable for soldiers,
12439947-CG08-20
6 GEELONG INDEPENDENT Friday, 21 February, 2020
Dr Fielding explained. But, using a guide line, commanders could set up new paths for the RAIDER each time, training soldiers to be more adaptive and deadlier, he said. M1 Abrams tank cannons, heavy machine guns and even attack helicopters had ired at the target during 18 months of development from concept to commercial reality. he system consisted of an expendable target, a trailer and, by far the most expensive component, an electric-powered mover, Dr Fielding said. “(During trials) we gained an understanding of what would be a practical distance to separate the mover from the target,” he said. “At the end of the day, you don’t want to be blowing up the high value component when you shoot.” he mover did survive, however, a hit from a heavy machine gun and even a “dust up” from the 30mm nose cannon of a Tiger attack chopper, Dr Fielding said. “hey’ve been wounded but still able to be repaired to full working order with relatively little efort.” Dr Fielding said the RAIDER’s turning system is quite unique and its ease of use also set it apart. “From cracking open the shipping container to having a moving target ready to be engaged, it takes two hours. “hat greatly increases the number of suitable areas where the system can be set up,” he said. Ater irst pitching the design and receiving funding in 2016, the team had supplied six of the RAIDER systems to the army.
Main: An M1 Abrams engages the RAIDER target. Above: A Tiger attack helicopter engages the RAIDER target with its 30mm nose cannon. Left: Michael Fielding and Senator Sarah Henderson following the announcement of a contract worth more than $1 million for the RAIDER target system. (Pictures: Supplied)
he recent contract brings the total number to 12 and Dr Fielding hoped to eventually market the system to Australia’s military allies. “We’re looking to expand the number of systems available,” he said. he RAIDER was just the latest project in the team’s long-running collaboration with the army on various target systems, Dr Fielding explained. “here’s been a host of training systems we’ve developed over the years that have supported
predominantly the army,” he said. “It’s been a long concerted efort by a lot of people to make this commercially viable.” For Dr Fielding, 38, that collaboration began ater he moved to Geelong to study robotic engineering at Deakin University. In the mid-2000s he saw materials damaged by improvised explosive devices (IED) from wars in the Middle East. “It gave me an insight on some the challenges the soldiers are facing,” he said.

How to Improve Your Hearing in 30 days People who can hear and engage with their friends and loved ones live better and healthier lives. It is also known that people who treat their hearing loss by getting hearing devices overwhelmingly agree that they have made an incredible difference in their lives.
Here’s 7 reasons how hearing devices can help: 1. Improve brain function by slowing down cognitive decline Studies have linked untreated hearing loss to an increased risk of developing dementia and reduced cognitive functioning. 2. Reduce the effects of Tinnitus Wearing professionally-fit hearing devices to correct hearing loss can reduce the annoyance and stress of tinnitus for many with hearing loss. 3. Anticipate your needs and adapt automatically New hearing devices continuously remember and learn what situations you need to hear better in. So, in a few weeks they will have learned your personal hearing preferences and automatically adjust. 4. Improve your safety You can hear warning signs that help you stay safe, such as a smoke alarm or car horn.
5. Improve personal relationships Without the important sense of hearing, you can often miss out on conversations. Regular hearing device use will help you rejoin these conversations and continue to enjoy social interations. 6. Boost your self confidence Hearing devices help people feel more in control of their lives. They can feel more motivated to participate in the activities they love and social engagements became more stimulating and rewarding. 7. Connect to other devices The latest hearing aid technology uses Bluetooth to transform your hearing aids into wireless stereo earbuds. They give you the freedom to interact with all of your devices, so you can stream a phone call, listen to iTunes or stream Netflix from your Tv or tablet. 12440512-SG07-20

HEARING AWARENESS WEEK Breaking local news Have your say Giveaways
As Hearing Awareness Week approaches, it’s timely to raise the topic of cochlear implants, a potential solution for people who may be struggling with inding a hearing solution when hearing aids don’t meet needs in a truly efective way. Geelong Cochlear Care Centre, which has patients coming from as far away as Swan Hill and Mount Gambier, is seeing well more than 400 patients, most from the Geelong region. Caitlin O’Sullivan, supervisor at the centre, says in the two years they’ve been in Geelong, 69 implantable devices have been activated, with more patients awaiting surgery dates. “We mark our second birthday on February 27, and it’s been very exciting seeing people’s lives changed by cochlear implants in that time,” she said. “here’s no upper age limit for receiving a cochlear implant and people from age ive years can be assessed and supported at the Geelong Cochlear Care Centre. “Cochlear implants are fully subsided for medicare card holders in Victoria, as long as patients meet the guidelines for the procedure. We carry out all the auditory testing and ensure surgery is a viable choice.”

Folk maestro returns to Shed By Luke Voogt With a repertoire of at least nine instruments, including his voice, US folk singer and storyteller John McCutcheon struggles to pick his favourite. “I’ll be travelling with a brand new hammer dulcimer, so I’m playing her a lot these days,” he told the Independent from his Atlanta home. “his week she’s my favourite.” Ater a recent tour of California and a show in South Carolina, McCutcheon is set to embark on his latest Australian tour.

- John McCutcheon He returns to the Potato Shed for the irst time in four years on February 29, on his way to Port Fairy Folk Music Festival. “Since (then) I’ve released three albums and a book,” the 67-year-old said. “I’m about to go into the studio to record a new album, so there’ll be lots of new songs this tour, but plenty of old favourites, as well.” McCutcheon’s most recent album features artists from across the world paying tribute to his late mentor and American cultural icon Pete Seeger. “He took me under his wing early on and we became friends and, sometimes, musical partners,” McCutcheon said. “I would not be doing what I’m doing had it not been for Pete’s example and mentorship. “He was a North Star, a shining beacon on how to play and deliver songs, how to reach audiences in powerful ways, and, not

incidentally, how to navigate celebrity and come out clean.” Seeger once described McCutcheon as “one of the best musicians in the USA”. “(But) all the accolades mean nothing if
you can’t entertain and move your audience,” McCutcheon said. Seeger was instrumental in teaching him how to get crowds singing along, he explained. “Pete had this remarkable way of turning an
audience into a choir,” he said. McCutcheon’s folk journey began as a 14-year-old learning to play guitar when he stumbled upon the Woody Guthrie Songbook, which taught him to “open up my ears”. He was learning to play banjo at university in Minnesota, where the instrument was “a weird curiosity”, when he decided to travel to Appalachia. “I igured I needed to go where the music was a more natural part of people’s lives,” he said. Appalachian locals greeted him with “unbelievable kindness, generosity and hospitality,” he said. “I got to sit at the feet, and play at the side, of some of the inest musicians and people I ever met.” He went on to write songs about everything from Jewish refugees leeing Hitler’s Germany to 14-year-old Malala Yousufza, who famously stood up to the Taliban, in his half-century music career. His music would take him and his children across the world, even once to the Soviet Union. “I’ve survived this business for almost 50 years and I’m still curious, creative and writing more and better than ever,” he said. Storytelling is a huge part of McCutcheon’s shows, an art he learnt from musical mentors and his wife, a children’s author. “I married the inest storyteller I know, Carmen Agra Deedy, and I get a front row seat to the way she can make even a trip to the grocery store epic,” he said. McCutcheon described his past audience at the Potato Shed during a four-act show as “wonderful”. “I’m glad I’ll be able to stretch out for an entire evening with them,” he said. “I absolutely love coming to Australia.”

Bellissimo fun, food and functions Club Italia has been an extraordinary melting pot of entertainment, fun social activities and fabulous catered functions for a very long time. In fact, you could probably say it’s legendary in terms of bringing generous hospitality and authentic Italian cuisine to locals and their visitors who simply love having a great time. One of those highly enjoyable – and popular – social occasions is the regular Dinner Dance. Leanne Grist from the club says the one held last month gave everyone a swinging time, and there’s another one coming up on March 14. “A two-course meal is served – deliciously Italian, of course – and entertainment comes from Complesso Pergolese,” says Leanne. “Another event to look out for is our Mother’s Day lunch on May 6, again with a two-course meal, with Joe and Carmen bringing the entertainment. he cost is just $20 a person.” Where Club Italia really shines is in its well-organised functions. he club can cater for up to 450 people in the modern space, whether it’s for a wedding, birthday party, or a business function or seminar. Audio and visual equipment is provided, as required, and a great range of menus to suite tastes and budgets is on ofer. Both small and large training sessions are perfectly accommodated in the upstairs rooms which can be divided into spaces to suit. “Whatever the occasion, we go out of our way to make it one to be remembered. he club’s atmosphere, both inside and out, is perfect for having a great time,” Leanne says. Club Italia is also home to ballroom dancing. Every Sunday night, from 6-10pm, the dance loor becomes “the friendliest in town”. “It’s ballroom dancing at its best,” Leanne says. “Latin, modern and new vogue styles are all covered and participants get to literally dance the night away. Our bistro puts on a home-cooked meal (starting from just $10) on Sunday night, too, while the bar stocks all the favourite drinks.” Every hursday and Sunday aternoon, indoor social bocce comes to the fore. Bocce, considered the oldest game known to man, is terriic for school recreational and sporting activities. It also proves to be a great way to meet new friends and catch up with old – and it suits all ages and itness levels. he pace slows somewhat at noon on hursdays, when it’s eyes down for bingo. here are prizes to be won and everyone has a chance to socialise in a relaxed, fun way.

Easy pickings for snapper ON THE BITE
Geelong Cricket Club couldn’t take to the ield against Monash last Saturday, following heavy downpours in the lead-up to the game. he match will now revert to a one-day ixture tomorrow, during which the Cats must put it all together if they are to keep their slim inals hopes alive. With two rounds to go in the Geelong Cricket Association season, division one side Grovedale faces a must-win clash with ladder-leader North Geelong. he Tigers managed to get six vital points last week, when they smashed Murgheboluc in the irst innings, but fell short in their quest for outright second innings points. hey would have been disappointed to learn that the East Belmont and South Barwon game did not proceed due to a waterlogged ground at Winter Reserve. Had that game gone ahead, the loser would have slipped to ith spot, below Grovedale on the ladder. Grovedale needs to regroup quickly and prepare for the Magpies with a must-win attitude. Selections: St Josephs v EAST BELMONT, MURGHEBOLUC v Leopold, SOUTH BARWON v Bell Post Hill, Newtown & Chilwell v LARA, NORTH GEELONG v Grovedale. Division two continues to intrigue, with seven of the eight clubs still able to make inals. St Peters is probably the least likely of those, as its percentage is far inferior to the sides above. But if it can cause a boilover and defeat second-placed Marshall this game, it could potentially thrash Manifold Heights in the inal game and sneak in. Highton has also managed to keep its head above water, inding itself in ith spot ater beating Bell Park last week in a huge upset.

Irrewarra won the inaugural Barwon Women’s Cricket Competition premiership beating Ocean Grove in a hard-fought inal. (Supplied)
And in a scenario no one would have predicted at the start of the season, Geelong City takes on Bell Park in a game it must win to ensure it moves through to the post season. Selections: MARSHALL v St Peters, Manifold Heights v TORQUAY, BELL PARK v Geelong City, MODEWARRE v Highton. Division three remains enthralling, with what must surely be the tightest season ever. While the top three appear set, there are six sides who all still have legitimate hopes of snagging the inal spot in the top four. Selections: ALEXANDER THOMSON v
Geelong’s Best Golf Cars •Sales•Services•Repair •Batteries•Testing
Guild Saints, Waurn Ponds Deakin v CORIO, ST ALBANS BREAKWATER v Bannockburn, Lethbridge v THOMSON, Newcomb & District v GEELONG WEST. And in the Barwon Women’s Cricket Competition, Irrewarra took out the inaugural premiership in sensational fashion, beating Ocean Grove in a hard-fought inal. Ocean Grove batted irst and posted 6-89 from its 20 overs, but Irrewarra held its nerve to pass the total with just three balls to spare. he competition has been hailed a huge success by clubs and participants.
Up the top of Port Phillip Bay, towards Altona, has been ishing very well for pinkie snapper. Although not really getting much over a kilo, there is heaps out there! Casting 4 inch sot plastics or driting with baits are very simple and efective techniques to score yourself a feed. Werribee has been on ire as of late, with massive schools of King George whiting patrolling the sand, anglers are having no issue in inding a bag of ish to 38cm. St Helens Rocks has been a bit slow this past week with the ishing being very hit and miss, but with the wild weather we are having at the moment it is deinitely worth a crack as it will stir up the bottom and bring the ish in close. St Leonards to Queensclif still remains a popular hotspot if you’re chasing a feed of calamari and whiting. Fishing the tide change for the whiting is the key to getting a bag of ish with sizes exceeding 40cm. Once again, this week it’s tuna that are on most angler’s minds and are dominating reports, all the way from the back of ‘he Rip” right through to Aireys Inlet. hey are taking a wide variety of techniques with trolling and casting still being the most efective. he Maribyrnong and Yarra River are both ishing exceptionally well as of late for black bream.
