Tools donated by local men's sheds that were distributed in Buchan last Sunday. ing the benefits would be going directly to communities in need. “It was more successful than I thought. I created a big problem for myself because we finished up with so many tools and we couldn’t afford to do 4 runs with just a 6 by 4 trailer,” Rob said. Any cash donations from the community were also put towards purchasing tools, but when Rob ended up with more tools than he could safely store in the shed he had no choice but to ring up Budget Car and Truck Rental in Croydon and enquire about a truck. “They said if we want a truck during the week they might be able to do a deal. “When I brought it back they said just fill up the tank with petrol, there’s no charge. “That was fantastic and helped our pockets a lot. We get our money from Bunning’s barbeques so that would be a lot of sausages we’d have to sell,” Rob laughed. According to Rob, the tools were distributed at a community luncheon where locals were told “they are for community use, help yourselves.” “I was told it was very moving to see the appreciation because a lot of them have nothing so they need the basic tools. With the devastated township of Mallacoota currently a sight of burnt houses and blackened trees, a 12-hour round trip is planned for coming weeks to deliver the town with the basics to begin restoring their properties. “Well you can’t build a fence without a hammer”, Rob said.

A cluster of men’s sheds from Melbourne’s outer-east have banded together in an extraordinary effort to provide fire affected communities in East Gippsland with tools necessary to begin rebuilding. Men’s sheds from across the Yarra Ranges, including Yarra Glen and Montrose, have spent weeks collecting hand tools, rakes, shovels, hammers, chisels, bench tools and woodworking equipment. The overwhelming abundance of donations has so far seen multiple trailer loads and a truck load of goods delivered to the fire ravished townships of Buchan and Bruthen. President of Croydon Men’s Shed, Rob Ringholt headed the movement by bringing up the idea at a meeting between various men’s sheds in the area. “The fires were still on at the time, and we often get calls to the shed from women saying their husband has died and offering us the tools,” Rob said. “I spoke to my wife about it and she said isn’t it a shame we can’t get them to the people hit by the fires. “Based with that idea I rang the president of Maffra Men’s Shed, who used to be a member of our Croydon shed, and asked if he could distribute the tools throughout East Gippsland if we got them down to him. He rang back and said he could arrange distribution. According to Rob, the response from other sheds in the area was fantastic. “It just become a community effort. They were very happy to do it,” he said. President of Montrose and District Men’s Shed, Lee Kirkby told the Mail it was the perfect opportunity to repurpose tools that have been donated to the Montrose shed over the years. “Over the years we often get bits and pieces given to us. This was the perfect opportunity and now they can be used by somebody who’s lost everything,” Mr Kirkby said. The collective of men’s sheds piled their spare items and donations into trailers, know-

Groups call for deer cull By Romy Stephens Monbulk MP James Merlino said he will take the issue of deer in the Yarra Ranges a step further after meeting with local environment groups on 14 February. Representatives from nine groups met with Mr Merlino to urge stronger action on feral deer across the region. Briefing papers presented were supported by the Sherbrooke Lyrebird Survey Group, Friends of Sherbrooke Forest, Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater, Friends of Sassafras Creek, Macclesfield Landcare, Monbulk Landcare, Johns Hill Landcare, Cardinia Deer Management Coalition and the Victorian National Parks Association. The papers provided background into the issue - particularly around Sherbrooke Forest - and called for immediate funding for professional shooters and a commitment to longterm action across the state. Mr Merlino said he is aware of the environmental impact deer are having and will work towards a resolution. “I am very aware of the growing deer population and the problems they are causing the Dandenong Ranges.” “I met with a number of local groups to hear further about the issue.” “What is very clear is that we need to do more. I will be meeting with the Environment Minister to discuss this problem.” According to a Yarra Ranges Council submission to a Federal Government Senate Enquiry into deer in 2018, many reserves in the municipality have traditionally shown high deer numbers. The submission added that fauna monitoring in Monbulk and Butterfields Reserve in
Monbulk MP James Merlino looks at images of deer destruction with Alex Maisey and Gaye Gadsden. Emerald showed 4-5 times the number of deer in 2018 compared with previous years. Long-term member of the Sherbrooke Lyrebird Survey Group and PhD candidate on lyrebirds Alex Maisey said deer are adding to other stresses on the local environment. “Feral deer are pushing the forest to breaking point,” he said. “The forest is already under incredible stress from climate change, weed encroachment, predation of wildlife by foxes and cats,
runoff from roads and roofs, and leaky septic systems.” Yarra Ranges Environmentalist of the Year Bill Incoll said Sambar deer, in particular, have increased rapidly over the past 11 years. “The main deer species in Sherbrooke is the Sambar and they are huge, up to 350kg,” he said. “Numbers have dramatically increased since the 2009 bushfires and they are now causing enormous damage.”

Finding a place and solace in the ranges By Romy Stephens
Dorothy Williams with her book Monbulk: Living in the Dandenongs and latest book Secrets Picture: ROB CAREW and Silences. 204473
Monbulk author Dorothy Williams has recently penned a story that blends themes and characters from her own life into a fiction book. Secrets and Silences is about a 20-year-old girl called Aimee who belongs to an extended family before finding out she is actually adopted. "Probably every writer is writing out something of their own inner self or an old story," Ms Williams said. "I believe that fiction is really stirred up fact." "Her identity is formed by belonging to this extended family and when somebody in chapter one, a woman, turns up on her doorstep and says 'I'm your mother', she discovers she's been adopted," Ms Williams explained. After the revelation comes to light, Aimee's life changes dramatically and she is forced to overcome numerous complications. "The real theme of the book is how do you re-invent your own personality when everything that is formerly relied on is flowing out
the window," Ms Williams said. Ms Williams is an author and artist who has a range of published fiction and non fiction pieces. Local residents may recall her well-known book Monbulk: Living in the Dandenongs. Despite being a fiction book, certain aspects of Secrets and Silences reflect Ms Williams' life. She said that a tense relationship with her mother meant she grew up feeling as though she was adopted. "I was a Depression baby. I was born in 1931, the year of lowest birth rate, in other words nobody wanted a baby," she said. "My sister was already eight and a half (years old), if my mother had intended more children, she would have had more by then. "Friends her age all had their children and I don't think she knew anybody with a child my age. "I was a real impediment and I grew to feel as if I was a sort of boarder in the house." The theme of adoption was also reflected
in Ms Williams' life with her two children being adopted and her working in an adoption agency as a teenager. Searching for identity is also something Ms Williams encountered throughout her lifetime, particularly during the 22 years she was stuck in an difficult marriage. But she seemingly found a sense of identity by moving to the Dandenong Ranges. Ms Williams grew up near the city before she moved to a block of land in Monbulk in 1982. She has lived in the area ever since, now residing in a house closer to Main Street. She said moving to the Dandenong Ranges was a life changing decision. "Coming to Monbulk, buying the block changed my life," she said. "It's a very meditative experience to be in the forest." Ms Williams' book Secrets and Silences is now available for purchase. The state opposition has pledged a cash for containers scheme that will allow Victorians to cash-in by depositing their used containers. A container deposit scheme aims to encourage the use of recycling and the reduction of litter and landfill waste by allowing the community to collect and return their empty cans, bottles and other containers for a 10 cent refund. The scheme complements the Liberals’ Zero Waste to Landfill policy to end landfill by 2035 and create a new low emission, reliable energy source. The state opposition claims the scheme will be designed in consultation with industry, including manufacturers, retailers, and hospitality providers, to maximise community benefits. Victoria is currently the only state in Australia that does not have, or plans to implement a container deposit scheme. Boomerang Alliance brought their cam-

On another note, many families from Emerald Secondary College have contacted my office recently as many Year 7 students living in Cockatoo had been denied access to their local school bus, being forced to take the public service. This was despite some of these Year 7 student’s older siblings being approved for this bus service. These Year 7 students were expected to walk past their siblings and other students catching this bus to catch the public bus from Cockatoo Main St which in the morning would get them to school just as class begins. After writing to the Minister for Education about each student’s situation, we were able to get this matter rectified and the students are now approved to travel on the school bus. If your child is in a similar situation, please contact my office, and we will hopefully be able to rectify the situation with the Minister.

Theatres join forces for fire fundraiser By Romy Stephens
Janette Wescombe, Simon O’Callaghan and Bridget Vallence at the tourist development opening.
New tourism space By Romy Stephens Owners of a new tourist development at Lilydale Pine Hill Caravan Park believe they can now meet a high demand to accommodate tourists in the Yarra Ranges. The development officially opened on 14 February with special guests Evelyn MP Bridget Vallence and Yarra Ranges Tourism CEO Simon O'Callaghan. It features over 100 cabin and caravan sites for tourists with the construction of amenities still underway. But it wasn't an easy process to get the new sites up and running. Caravan park owners Robert and Janette took over the park in 2000 and at the time, it only catered for residential purposes. Janette said that before they arrived, numerous attempts to expand the park for tourists had been unsuccessful. "The previous owner was here for 20 years and he'd tried two or three times to get the shire to agree to extend the park so they could cater for tourism. Each of them failed," she said. She said during the early days of opening, tourists would often come with nowhere else to stay. "When we started 20 years ago people would turn up at the entrance and they'd walk in and say 'please don't turn us away, we would never have come if we realised there was no accommodation, nowhere for us to go with our caravan'," Janette explained. "In 2007 we made the decision to tackle the

shire again and we put an application in for development." That application was finally approved in two stages. Stage 1 opened two years ago and the recent completion of Stage 2 has seen the entire project now finished. Janette said benefits from the expansion are already starting to show. "It's been just so well supported and our percentages have been well above what we had hoped," she said. "And the feedback that we're getting in relation to the way the sites are set up the facilities that they have and the location is really great." Janette said the new development was not only important for tourists, but also people visiting for family, friends, events and work.
She added that despite the potential concern of tourism increasing too much across the Yarra Ranges, it's important to sustain the inevitably growing trend and support local businesses. "It is really important that our infrastructure keeps up with bringing more people into the area and you don't want to change the area drastically." "We promote and partner with local business, that's become a big focus for us. "We've set up information brochures voucher books in partnership with a wide range of local businesses." The new development at Lilydale Pine Hill Caravan Park is now available for tourists. To find out more, visit www.lilydalepinehill. com.au.
A group effort from theatres across the eastern region has seen about $5600 donated to CFA groups and Healesville Sanctuary. From the Ashes was a bushfire benefit concert held at the 1812 Theatre in Upper Ferntree Gully on 9 February. The concert saw an afternoon of song, theatre, poems and comedy from theatre groups across the east such as the Peridot Theatre, Ark Theatre, Lilydale Athenaeum, Eltham Theatre, How Dramatic, 1812 and the Mooroolbark Theatre Group. Profits from ticket sales went to District 11 Bairnsdale and the Upper Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade. Meanwhile, funds raised from a raffle and cake stall at the event went to Healesville Sanctuary to help out with koalas. Fundraiser organiser, Phillip Stephenson said the whole event took about four weeks to organise. "I was sitting at home thinking is there something we can do with the theatre community," he said. "I just sent out an SOS to everybody and all the theatre companies around this side of Victoria. "I didn't think it was going to sell because it was a weekend and we had four tickets sold. "Within two weeks we had sold out the whole thing." Mr Stephenson said he was pleased to see theatre groups join forces for a great cause. "We don't really see that a lot because each theatre group has their own individual events and don't mix," he said. "For the actual theatre groups to work together I think that's one of the first times it was actually done. "I was really proud to see them come together."

Baby bundle delight New parents at Angliss Hospital received an extra bundle of joy recently, and it wasn’t just in the form of their newborn baby. Jade and Tristian received a visit from Deputy Premier James Merlino and Bayswater MP Jackson Taylor on 7 February. The parents recently celebrated the birth of their first daughter, Billie, and were presented with a Baby Bundle worth $150. The initiative was part of the State Government’s election commitment to provide every new parent with a Baby Bundle. Bundles are equipped with a teething ring, nappy bag, safe sleeping bag, a cotton wrap, first aid kit, baby sunhat, toothbrush and a grow suit. James Merlino said he was delighted to present the bundle and get to know the staff at the hospital. “It was amazing to chat with the staff at the Angliss about the exciting and challenging aspects of their jobs,” he said. The staff at the Angliss do an amazing job and it was terrific to listen to their stories about the incredibly important work they do.” According to the State Government, more than 20,000 bundles have been delivered since July last year.

Editor's note: The Mail has previously covered the bird feeding at Grant’s Picnic Ground and in that coverage, has presented both sides to the story. This latest piece was intended to provide insight into how businesses in the Dandenong Ranges have been impacted by the recent Victorian bushfires, coronavirus and in the case of Grants on Sherbrooke, the ban on bird feeding. Hence why an exploration into the issue of just the bird feeding was not covered.

Not normally one to write to newspapers, I feel compelled to express my disappointment at The Mail’s coverage of the recent ban on bird feeding at Grants Picnic Ground in Kallista. The story ( Doors are Open, 18 February) did not present a balanced view of the contentious issue of bird feeding and read more as an advertisement for the cafe and souvenir shop which operates out of Grants. For over 20 years the current business owners at Grants have profited from bird feeding , with little apparent concern for the problems it causes, despite a community campaign and public meeting over 10 years ago which resulted in some restrictions to bird feeding at Grants . The cafe owners are now worried that losing their “cash cockie” will greatly affect their business , although as your article outlines there are still attractions for visitors including bush walks through the beautiful Sherbrooke forest. Of course there is a risk that visitors to Grants will decrease as a result of the feeding ban, however this risk pales against the risks to bird and human health had the feeding continued . As a veterinarian, I have been surprised by the lack of media coverage of the health risks associated with feeding wild birds. The recent coronavirus outbreak is thought to have originated in animals and demonstrates that some diseases can be transmitted from animals to humans , even though the animal may not show signs of disease. Psittacosis ( or “parrot fever”) is a disease that can also be passed from birds to humans via their droppings, feather dust or handling birds. It causes flu-like symptoms and can
cause serious health problems such as pneumonia or worse if not properly treated , but it may not be diagnosed by doctors as the symptoms are so general. The cockatoo flapping its wings at the tourist in your front page photo could be spreading bacteria through the air and infecting people even without contact . I applaud Parks Victoria for their proactive approach to the feeding ban. A few days ago I noticed a mobile information booth set up in the car park opposite the old bird feeding enclosure, providing information about the many great walking tracks and short nature walks through the beautiful Sherbrooke forest . There is also a large flashing sign advising tourists of the ban. Of course there may still be people who ignore the ban and bring their own food for the birds , but concerned locals like myself will be keeping a keen eye on Grants for any illegal bird-feeding. Valley gets Vicious By Nick Creely Some of the great football and netball characters of the Yarra Valley and south east are set to once again come together for a wonderful cause with the Valley Vicious Rett Awareness Cup back for another year and set to be even more entertaining. On a night dedicated to banding together as a community with the purpose of fighting and raising funds for the devastating disease that is Rett Syndrome, Lee Lawrence is once again hoping for crowds to make their way out and support the cause, which will be held on Saturday 29 February at Healesville Sporting Complex. “Last year we ended up raising around $20,000, and this year we’re aiming higher, about $50,000, and that is achievable,” Lee said. “Off the jump we’ve raised around $18,000, and I think we’ll do it, but we’ll see how we go. “We’re just praying on good weather.” Lee runs the popular Facebook page ‘Valley Vicious Footy and Netball Banter’, which he started when his daughter, Gypsy was diagnosed with Rett - a genetic brain disorder found almost exclusively in females and with a prevalence of one in about 15,000 females - all with the aim of raising awareness and raising funds to find a cure. Infants and children with the disorder cease to acquire new skills and gradually lose previously acquired abilities, such as control of the hands and the ability to vocalize most sounds and words. Lee said while the disease is cruel and debilitating, Gypsy has never dropped her spirit and continues to smile no matter the circumstances. “She’s been going really well - we do have
Healesville’s Emily Hay, Katie Lamb, Dannielle Jones and Ali Bryan with Stella, Oakley and Picture: ROB CAREW Opal. 204538 to help her quite a lot with her eating now, but that’s really the only noticeable thing of late,” he said. “She’s just always happy, and she’s started school this year which is awesome. “So she’s doing three days up at Kinglake and two days down at Mount Evelyn Special School. It knocks her around a little, but she’s going really, really well.” Lee said that Rett Syndrome Australia are doing everything they can to cure the disorder, and are confident that it will one day become a reality. “From what we here, they’re very positive, they do believe that it’ll be one of the brain disorders that’ll be cured,” he said.
“They’re grateful of what we give them, and they’ve assured me they will find a cure one day.” The Facebook page has since attracted a cult following in the Valley, and next Saturday’s event is set to be a monster day of sport, with a large crowd set to be treated to some excellent football and netball action. With the gates opening at 12pm, the All-Star netball clash will kick off at 2pm, before the Valley Vicious ladies games featuring all-stars from around the Valley against the Healesville ladies premiership team bounces the ball at 2.30pm. During half-time of the ladies game, there will be an Auskick game on the oval, as well as a range of activities for kids and adults across the game. The night’s main event, the Valley Vicious All Stars versus the Valley Vicious Vets All Stars, will close out the day, with a range of speakers, including a band post-game, set to entertain the crowd. There will be a ‘Big Splash to Beat Rett’ as well as a Valley Vicious Electrics Super Booth competition that is sure to also keep fans engaged on the day. Lee said the introduction of the ladies game this season - as well as the football and netball matches was simply something that had to be done this time around. “Adding the girls’ game is pretty much a nobrainer,” he said. “Girls footy has kicked off massively, and adding the girls have been fantastic. “We’ve got all these group chats with all the teams and the energy the girls show and the way they promote has been fantastic.” The day will cost $10 for entry, with kids under 16 getting in for free. For more info, search @valleyvicious on Facebook.
Puppy theft Police are appealing for public assistance to locate a puppy allegedly stolen in Mooroolbark last month. It is alleged two men attended a Mooroolbark address on 27 January to view two rottweiler puppies advertised for sale online. Once the men had possession of the puppies they ran from the address, dropping one of the puppies and fled the scene in a stolen car. Police have charged a 19-year-old Burnside Heights man with theft and he has been bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 17 June. Investigators have not located the stolen puppy and have released an image of the puppy in the hope someone knows of its whereabouts. Contact Crime Stoppers, 1800 333 000, with more information.

Help with a hearty meal A recent investment into the provision of healthy breakfasts, lunches and school holiday equipment is expected to help support children in need across the Yarra Ranges. Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing announced on 21 February that 33 schools across the Latrobe Valley and the Yarra Ranges have been invited to participate in the State Government’s School Breakfast Clubs Expansion Program from Term 3 this year. Under the expansion, 125 schools around Victoria will be added to the School Breakfast Clubs Expansion Program each term this year, ensuring more students from families that are experiencing disadvantage have the support they need to succeed at school. The program will also provide lunches and school holiday supplies to students who need it, on top of breakfast. Ms Shing said the expansion “means that more students will have the fuel they need to get the most out of every school day.” “We know that kids need proper nutrition every day to help them concentrate, participate and reach their full potential at school,” she said. “The opportunity to share meals with classmates also brings students together and helps to develop important friendships and connections.” The State Government claimed that School Breakfast Clubs Expansion Program products are sourced locally from Victorian producers and manufacturers. The breakfast and lunch menu offerings include a range of healthy options such as muesli, Vita Brits, milk, baked beans, fruit cups, fresh apples, Vegemite and honey, and lunch bowls. More than 8.8 million breakfasts have been delivered to Victorian students since the program started in 2016.

An early taste of school It has been a smooth transition to school for the 19 Prep students at St Paul’s in Monbulk following the 2019 “Taster Days” and “Prep Readiness” program. The Prep students began 2020 confident and eager to learn due to the success of the transition programs at the school. In February 2019 St Paul’s began “Prep Taster Days” by inviting three-year-old, four-yearold and five-year-old children to the school on a fortnightly basis for ‘a taste of school’. This involved sessions which focused on cooking, gardening, dancing, singing, art and even a science fair! In the second half of 2019 St Paul’s began their “Prep Readiness” program. Principal Michael Watt explains: “The Prep Readiness program is aimed at four and five year old pre-school children and has a focus on fine motor skills and gross motor skills. “The program is more structured than the Taster Days, with explicit teaching on getting ready for school life.” Deputy principal Stephenie Peels and Prep teacher Maria Cook said that by creating the “Taster Days” and “Prep Readiness” programs, the school was able to build relationships with local pre-schools and the pre-school children, as well as their families. Now the whole school community is benefiting. Mrs Cook could see benefits for both families and the school. “Our Prep children began school life at St Paul’s excited about all the things they’ll learn this year,“ she said. “The children already knew us, they were familiar with the surroundings, and we knew the names of all the family members,

Preps get a taste of school at St Paul's before their big start through a series of taster programs. including younger siblings.” Mrs Peels added: “By experiencing what school looks and feels like last year, the students felt comfortable, valued, relaxed and we were more able to nurture new friendships.“ Mr Watt agrees. “The buzz word for transition is ‘readiness’,
whether that be ready for primary school, secondary school, university or the workforce. “At St Paul’s, Prep Readiness equates to a socially and emotionally confident child who demonstrates a love of learning from the very beginning of their primary school life.“ The “Taster Days” and “Prep Readiness”
programs are an annual occurrence at St Paul’s, located at 59 Moores Rd Monbulk. The invitation is extended to all three, four and five-year-old pre-school students from any kinder or child care centre. Families are encouraged to register today by calling the school office on 9756 7201.

A leader in innovation By Taylah Eastwell Yarra Hills Secondary College is a multi-campus State Secondary School serving the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The college has a Year 7 to 10 Mt Evelyn Campus, as well as a Mooroolbark Campus, with the Mooroolbark Campus housing a Year 7 to 10 ’Junior School’ and a Year 11 and 12 ’Senior School’ on the same site. Current enrolment is roughly 875 students and has been rising steadily in recent years, with another large intake in 2020 of Year 7 students, as well as many new enrolments across all other year levels. College Principal Darren Trippett has overseen this growth since joining the school in 2012. While the school has been seen as a transformational school, it now leads the Outer East in many innovative and engaging initiatives. “One of the things I noticed most when I first arrived at Yarra Hills was the lack of knowledge in the local community of the excellent programs we had in place,“ he said. “We were recently part of a select group of schools across Victoria to participate in the Melbourne University U.M.N.O.S. program, involving internationally acclaimed Professor John Hattie. We again partner this year with Melbourne University in an exciting differentiation project,” Mr Trippett said. “We have also been acknowledged nationally for implementing our school-wide ’restorative practices’ model which helps students establish and maintain effective relationships and behaviour, and our Intercultural Awareness program was featured last year nationwide on SBS’s Insight program. “Since 2017 we have been a lead school for Respectful Relationships across the outer east,

A welcoming environment Monbulk Primary School provides a welcoming community environment where students find learning engaging, challenging and fun. The introduction of a STEM specialist subject in 2020 has quickly become a favourite among many students, as has the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden and cooking classes - with Principal Estelle Alder volunteering to undertake the all-important quality assurance tastings. Classroom teachers are focusing on writing skills using the Writer’s Workshop Model to build student confidence, skill and stamina in writing high quality pieces. All students have a writer’s notebook filled with ideas and experiences to inspire their writing creativity. Small class sizes allow teachers to focus their attention on each student’s strengths and work areas, so that students are supported and extended as needed. Monbulk Primary School’s newest staff member, Billy is in training to be a therapy dog for the children. He will give cuddles, help play basketball and listen to children read - and may try to sneak a vegemite sandwich every now and again. New building works will soon commence which will see Monbulk Primary gain a new library, new senior school centre, 2 new netball courts, a new reception area and a freshly landscaped and enlarged yard space. Local artist to showcase his skill By Romy Stephens Sherbrooke Art Gallery will be home to highquality oil and pastel paintings next month, with the work of Olinda artist Maxwell Wilks on display. An exhibition featuring Mr Wilks’ work will be launched on 7 March in conjunction with a demonstration and discussion of pastel painting. Mr Wilks is a highly accomplished artist that has been working in oils and pastels since 1982. During his time painting, he has travelled across the country to teach and hosted over 50 solo exhibitions. He follows the representational style of painting and when creating landscapes, typically paints from his subject to give his work a fresh and immediate quality. “The skill of this way of painting is to understand what you’re looking at and how to paint it in a simplified method, yet viewers still understand what I’m trying to paint,” Mr Wilks said. “It’s a bit impressionist. “A total painter allows the viewer to take some part in interpretation.” As a resident of the Dandenong Ranges for 20 years, Mr Wilks’ work has often been inspired by his surroundings. “My wife and I both like this area, we live in an old 1920s house with an old English garden,” he said. “It’s big (his studio) and it’s got great light and so working here every day is a dream. “I think the Dandenongs are a beautiful place, certainly for painters, it’s very inspiring to paint here.” Mr Wilks was formerly a Council member of the Victorian Arts Society, elected as a Fellow of the Society and was also Chairman of the

Young artists take over The Memo
Midway is a catchy mess
By Jed Lanyon The bright artistic talents of local students will be on display as the VCE Creative Showcase takes over The Memo. The exciting exhibition is the largest showcase of emerging artist from across the entire Yarra Ranges, allowing visitors to take a glimpse inside the imaginative minds of our youngest creative. The showcase begins with the exhibition opening party on Friday 21 February 6pm with an evening full of live music, food and drinks in support of the young artists. The showcase week opens from 24 February to 28 February where visitors can book private gallery tours, VCE Art and Studio Art viewing and hear from recent VCE Art graduates. Then, on Saturday 29 February, the creative takeover day takes place where visitors can come along to an exciting day of activities curated by the showcase alumni team, who have returned to help deliver the exhibition. For more information, visit https://bit. ly/2UqDOCU. Gianna - Upwey High School Upwey High School student, Gianna, said her work is inspired by mythology and that she wanted to evoke a sense of discomfort with her work. “I want people to appreciate what’s in their dreams. A lot of people can forget about it, but I think that can be a big inspiration for an artist. It’s hard to interpret other people’s dreams so I think it can be a really good medium to bring forth those ideas. “It’s nice to get recognition ... I think a lot of people may not appreciate the sheer workload that goes into the folios and to sort of have to force your creativity. You have to work under time constraints as well as make something that you like. 14 MAIL

Get together for a gigantic day of fun as the Giant Dogs Picnic Fun Day returns to Lillydale Lake on Sunday 19 April. This year will mark the sixth annual picnic day the, with many different giant dog breeds and their owners coming along to join in the fun and socialise with other giant dog owners. Last year the event attracted about 60 of the biggest doggos in the area as well as over 100 owners. “The aim of our day is to bring like minded giant dog owners together in a social setting and for members of the public to see and interact with giant dog breeds, demonstrating that large doesn’t necessarily mean scary,” Deb Clack of Newfoundland Club of Victoria said. The event will feature tips, demonstrations, classes as well as a CFA representative advising on the management of pets in high fire risk areas. The Giant Dogs Picnic Fun Day will take place from 10.30am to 2.30pm.

Ambrose, Gianna and April. Ambrose - Little Yarra Steiner School Ambrose, a student from Little Yarra Steiner School, said his work, ‘Are You Okay?’ aims to make people think the many layers a person can have. “This year, instead of looking outwards, I started to look in. I explored insecurities and how they affect me. I wanted to send a strong message to people who are viewing my artwork by creating a back layer and a fore layer to show how people can have two layers. “I wanted to show that people on the outside may appear okay or perfect by portraying this idealistic and normal face. But looking deeper, people can be experiencing these things that we can’t see. “I want people to be able to relate to these backgrounds of confusion and insecurity ... and see that they are not alone and that everyone is experiencing this. “This is the first time that I have been able to convey this message through my artwork. I haven’t been too confident within my art work and this hopefully will grow my confidence
Picture: JED LANYON and maybe spark some inspiration for further works. April - Lilydale Heights College April from Lilydale Heights College created a three dimensional paper quilled hippocampus, which is half horse, half sea creature from Greek mythology. “My overall topic was Greek mythology and the four realms of the sky, the sea, the earth and the underworld. “I had to curl each bit of paper individually, I had to cut them down to size, I had to shape them the way I wanted it, I had to make sure they glued properly ... It was a long process and it was pretty stressful, but I really enjoyed it because it was kind of therapeutic at the same time. April said she is excited to bring back an old form of art and show it in a new light. “I can’t wait for people to see it. I like creating creatures that are different and weird and this is a perfect representation of that. I want people to let the imagination run wild.”
Directed by Roland Emmerich, Midway is a severely messy war film depicting a pivotal naval battle between US and Japanese forces during World War II. The performances are uniformly solid, the major characters are engaging and the period atmosphere is flawless. Midway is also a refreshingly mature war film, balancing the honour and camaraderie of war with the stress, fatigue and suffering. But after the taut, harrowing first act, which depicts the bombing of Pearl Harbour, the quality plummets rapidly. The second act drags its feet through dry intelligence gathering and social functions, even as it skips across months at a time. Toward the climax, certain characters even return to base off-screen, undercutting the urgency of their ordeal. The third act squanders its drama, introducing plot-points that hold little to no consequence within the plot, such as the damaged Yorktown aircraft carrier and reckless pilot Dick Best's (Ed Skrein) lung damage. The climactic battle has plenty of thrilling moments, but the overall sequence has subpar CGI and lacks tension due to its confusing layout and the often absurd resilience of the fighter pilot heroes (which is a cliche known as "plot armour"). Like Danger Close from last year, Midway is a well-acted, exciting war movie with a sloppy, erratic screenplay. - Seth Lukas Hynes mailcommunity.com.au

SUNNINGHILL A VISUAL SPECTACLE TAKE the mystique and romance of an old English stone-cottage, with the visual spectacle of flourishing showcase-gardens and a prime level 2550 square metre site in the very heart of The Dandenong Ranges. and you have one of the most beautifullyrounded lifestyle environments you’re ever likely to experience! Such is the charm of “Sunninghill”. From first glance, as you approach the home along the extensive circular driveway lined with seasonal blooms, the intrigue begins, and as you tour through the home, every turn rewards you with profound character and a very spacious and “liveable” floorplan that rises to the contemporary demands of the modern family. “Sunninghill” displays easy indoor-outdoor integration, with French doors spilling outdoors from two living rooms and the master bedroom, all opening to a completely private entertaining deck that’s an idyllic “outdoor living room”. The home is beautifully appointed with a large and very impressive entrance hall,
substantial timber kitchen with walk-in larder, featuring an amazing La Canche 90 cm dual oven and matching range hood, Belfast ceramic sink and a Fisher and Paykel plumbed fridge, plus country styled marble benchtops and island bench complete this lovely kitchen. Four double bedrooms plus study, including huge attic-style bedroom with pretty dormer windows (a stunning fairy-tale retreat for a very lucky child!). Perhaps the ultimate appeal lies in the charm of the detail - extensive leadlight casement-windows, high ceilings and decorative cornices, polished hardwood floors, and feature wood fireplace. Sunninghill’s unique charm and character oozes gracefully outdoors throughout its magnificent 90 year old garden, with the lengthy driveway lined with Silver Birch and a kaleidoscope of colours from mature Rhododendrons and an understory of rich orange Clivia contrasting against glossy green foliage. Mass plantings throughout the garden of
Hellebores, Camellias, Azaleas, specimen Maples, Hydrangeas, sculpted Box Hedges and a majestic old Elm tree and Copper Beech trees. While this utterly unique property illustrates all that The Hills represent with respect to “quality living embraced by true character” - this wonderful location answers all of your questions about daily practicalities. Situated within a minute’s walk of village shopping, cafes, restaurants and handy public transport. ●

Summer finishes in style By Romy Stephens Rochford Wines was full of life on 22 February as A-ha took to the stage along with a range of other guests. The Norwegian trio, who dominated pop charts worldwide during the '80s, were joined by Rick Astley, Pseudo Echo and I Know Leopard. It was A-ha's first Australian tour in 34 years. The group is celebrating the 35th anniversary of their hugely influential debut album Hunting High And Low and its timeless classic hit Take On Me. Fellow '80s superstar Rick Astley sang all his crowd favourites and had the audience on its feet, while Pseudo Echo brought incredible stage presence with songs such as Funkytown. The event marked the final A Day On The Green performance at Rochford Wines for this summer. The tour will kick off again in November this year.
Crowds enjoy beautiful weather at Rochford Wines.

SPORT
Finals glory up for grabs By Richard Millott The race for the Norm Reeves Finals has ended with Lysterfield, Knox Gardens, Knoxfield and The Basin to finalise their finishing order next week after a crucial Round 11. Eildon Park travelled to Batterham Reserve with a win the only way to keep their top four aspirations alive. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first, making progress by seeing off the opening Bears bowling until Josh Lee came into the attack. Lee claimed 5/28 from his eight overs as the Panthers reached 166 for a target. Scott Vozzo and Shane Luck partnered for an 88-run stand before Luck was dismissed for 36, with Vozzo falling shortly after for 61 to be 3/108. The defending Premiers saw off the challenge of last year's finalists with the Bears passing the target at 6/168 to book their place in March. Eildon Park will host Upwey to finish the season aiming to lock in fifth place, while The Basin travel to Johnson Park in an attempt to climb above Knoxfield to host the elimination final. A year after claiming the Decoite Shield, Lysterfield have reached rare air at the top of Norm Reeves Shield at the end of the season after defeating Knox Gardens. The Beavers lost an early wicket but recovered nicely. Nathan Hicks (84), Nathan Walsh (63*) and Anthony Brolic (54) all reached halfcenturies against the Falcons bowling attack, lead by Scott McInerney (3/36). The visitors went big late - 70 runs from the final seven overs of their innings to take control, posting 6/251. In reply, the Falcons toiled hard against the attack in an arm-wrestle to break free and chase at 4/101 after 24 overs. In the end, only Matt Bell (43) was able to affect the Falcons' scoring as the home team was dismissed for 168. The win places Lysterfield a win ahead, with a win against Upper Ferntree Gully all that is needed to secure the minor premiership and hosting rights to the qualifying final. Meanwhile, Knox Gardens travel to Belgrave to conclude the home and away season, with a result securing the double chance. Johnson Park prevailed in their key matchup against Upper Ferntree Gully at Kings Park, with Steve Devenish providing an all-round performance. The Kings set out to post a target first, however the Sharks ran through the top order early at 3/26. Jay Colee (32) and Daniel Giblin (22) provided resistance to prolong the Kings innings to score, eventually reaching 8/118 from their overs. Steve Devenish was superb with the ball,
claiming 3/14 from his 8 overs including 3 maidens. Thoughts of a straightforward outcome disappeared early as the Sharks were 3/21 in their reply. Again it was Devenish (66*) to the rescue, spending over two and a half hours at the crease to carry the bat and secure a vital win at 6/119. The win puts the Sharks a game clear of the King's, meaning victory against The Basin will secure their place in Norm Reeves Shield for 2020/21. In contrast, Upper Ferntree Gully will need a big win against Lysterfield and require The Basin to win big also to sneak into ninth in the final round. It was a big win at Carrington Reserve as Knoxfield proved too good on the day for Belgrave. The Knights combined well in the middle order as Trent Scholfield (73), Zac Wilson (37) and Jake Balfour (33*) all got starts to propel the home team against the Pies to reach 4/208. Belgrave were knocked around early by Knights bowlers as the visitors sat at 3/19. Johnathon Levell (33) was the only Magpie to get a start, whilst Jacob Quigley claimed 4/29 on his recall to the first XI as the visitors were dismissed for 109. Knoxfield sit third and will need to defeat Ferntree Gully Footballers and hope that Belgrave defeat Knox Gardens to jump to second next week. Meanwhile, Belgrave host Knox Gardens, with the result either way most likely keeping the Magpies in eighth place. Upwey have jumped to sixth place after defeating Ferntree Gully Footballers at Upwey on Saturday. The Tigers used the home deck first as a selection of middle order Maestros got starts, with Matt Mulcahy (32), Jordan Dunstone (43), Chris Jewell (49) and Steve Gannell (40*) all contributing to Upwey's 8/235. Troy Maggs was the pick of the bowlers for the Griffens, claiming 3/66. The Griffens were struck down early as Kyle Snyman went through the top order to leave the visitors reeling at 3/10. The news did not get much better at 6/34 as
Snyman reached figures of 4/17 from eight overs. Some lower-order exploits from Kuldeep Sidhu (59) and Lahiru Kumara (54*) took the Griffens to 8/170. Upwey travel to Eildon Park next round, whilst Ferntree Gully Footballers will take on Knoxfield at Picketts Reserve. In the Decoite Shield, Mountain Gate made it two- from-two against finals aspirants, this time accounting for Rowville at Seebeck Reserve. It took only three balls from Luke Turner for the Hawks to be on the back foot, with the Gator skipper claiming 2/0 from the opening over. The Gators were up and about early, running through the Hawks at 5/32. No batsmen were able to reach starts, as Luke Turner (3/20) and John Rozakis (3/25) helped to dismiss the Hawks with 103 on the board. In reply, the Gators were made to work for the win, with Monto Perera claiming 4/13 whilst the Gators chipped away at the target. After a middle order stall that lost 4/10, the winning runs were secured within 25 overs. Rowville's season is on the line and out of their hands, with the Hawks needing to defeat St Johns Tecoma comfortably and needing the Gators to defeat South Belgrave. The Gators could level on points up to fifth place next week pending results. Monbulk remain on top of the ladder after a big win over St Johns Tecoma. The Hawks were served well at the top as Jason Fraser (40) and Udara Ravindu (30) got them going before the Saints bowlers shared the wickets around to restrict the home team to 8/134. Duncan Maher proved the thorn in the side for the Saints, claiming 4/13 as the Hawks rolled the Saints for 89. The Hawks travel to Olinda with an eye on wrapping up the Minor Premiership, while St Johns Tecoma will battle against a determined Rowville squad at Talaskia. Ferntree Gully are on a run of form coming into finals, with their latest win coming at the expense of Olinda.
Some action from FTG v Olinda in the DeCoite Shield grade at the weekend. Pictures: COURTESY FIELD OF VIEW SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY The Blues had Josh Henry at the top of the order scoring as he pleased, dismissed for 85 with support from Harry Cowling (39) and Jayden Bradbury (31) to reach 7/186. Taf Kamungozi was the pick of the Olinda bowlers with 3/49. Olinda set off in chase, however were kept in check by the Blues. Pat Mastertoun claimed 3/16 as the visitors were dismissed for 114. Ferntree Gully take on Knox Gardens next week to secure a qualifying final place. A win and results going their way will allow the Blues hosting rights, whilst Olinda end their season next week against Monbulk. Meanwhile, South Belgrave is in the box seat for the last remaining place in the finals after defeating Knox Gardens in a tight affair. South Belgrave batted first and stuck around early, with the score 1/73 from the first 15 overs. Jordan McDermott was the mainstay of the innings with 64. McDermott and Mark Baker (45) did all they could to stop Spencer Stuckey (4/54) with the ball. South ended their innings at 9/210. The Falcons were up to the challenge with Lachlan Stuckey (46), Dyllan Milligan (33) and Callum O'Connor (30) all keeping the scoreboard ticking with 13 runs from the final over but falling short at 9/203. South travel to Mountain Gate, where a win or a narrow loss would be enough to secure a berth in the elimination finals. Knox Gardens are set to host Ferntree Gully, where a comprehensive victory to the Falcons may displace the Blues in the qualifying final.

Eastern Health is putting the call out for more players, officials and support staff to get involved to help put together another great day for the seventh consecutive year. Eric Markham’s rink led by 11 shots with four ends to play, but lost all four ends to win 23 to 20. Monbulk 2 travelled to Yarra Glen to play on their fast green. They took some time to adjust to the conditions, but then got their line and length winning overall at 102 to 60. Monbulk 2 played Vermont South at home and had a comfortable win at 76 to 35.
Graeme Goller’s rink had a close contest early, but after grabbing a six on the seventh end cruised to victory, 23 to 9. Alan Hamilton’s rink only won one of the first eleven ends and were 15 shots behind at the lunch break. They did better in the second half of the game, but lost 25 to 13. Mike Harris’ rink had a close contest throughout their game, but went down 15 to 13. Ray Pikes rink trailed by five shots after 14 ends, but then won six of the next seven ends to win 24 to 17. Chasing a total of 4/92, Monbulk lost some wickets cheaply. Ethan Knight steadied the innings with 20 runs off 25 balls before retiring not out.
