MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk The 2020 council election on Saturday 28 March is just a few weeks away and while some candidates have chosen to make an early start on the campaign trail others have nominated late in the piece. They all no doubt have their own individual reasons. Pre-poll voting starts on Monday 16 January, and estimates suggest up to 30 per cent of voters cast their ballot before election day. I sincerely hope the remainder of the campaign period is a civilised one. In recent times at a state and national level we have all been reminded of the way in which the political can transition into the personal. Politics can be a tough business and anyone who puts up their hand to enter it at any level requires a thick hide. But one would hope local council politics is an arena in which mutual respect between candidates is seen as perhaps having more value than at higher levels of government. 'Respectful' is a word we often see and hear bandied about these days in many contexts. I hope our local Southern Downs Regional Council candidates keep the campaign to that standard. Jeremy Sollars

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT…

COUNCIL CANDIDATES FINALISED Former Southern Downs deputy mayor Ross Bartley will stand as a councillor candidate at the 2020 council election on Saturday 28 March. Mr Bartley told the Free Times this week he is nominating for councillor as he believes the rural community in the region needs "genuine representation", something he says is "sadly lacking in the current council". Mr Bartley stood unsuccessfully for the mayoralty at the 2016 Southern Downs Regional Council election, having previously been deputy mayor and a councillor in the amalgamated council, and a councillor under the Warwick Shire. He and his family run a farming operation at The Hermitage east of Warwick. In recent times Mr Bartley was one of a number of rural spokespeople at the forefront of a community campaign to prevent management of the Warwick Saleyards from being outsourced to a private operator. Nominations for the 2020 election closed on Tuesday of this week. Running for the position of mayor are serving mayor Tracy Dobie, long-standing councillor Vic Pennisi, Joe Doepel and Peter Kemp. The following people have nominated for the position of councillor (serving councillors indicated with 'Cr' in brackets) · BARTLEY, Ross · CABEZAS, Paola · CARRICK, Marion · CHRISTENSEN, Scott · ETTERY, Robert · GALE, Andrew · GLIORI, Marco · GOW, Cameron (Cr) · GRANT, Greg · GREENE-GALLOWAY, Jenn · HARROLD, Amanda · HUNTER, Max · JENSEN, Michael · JOHNSON, Gregory · KELLY, Rod (Cr) · KEOGH, Julia · LAWS, Sue · MARSDEN, Barbara · MCDONALD, Cynthia · MCNALLY, Jo (Cr - Deputy Mayor) · MCNICHOL, Marika (Cr) · REES, Glyn · STOCKS, Yve (Cr) · TANCRED, Stephen · WANTLING, Russell · WINDLE, Sheryl (Cr)

COVER STORY

Cover photo – Pat Ryan and Pauline Peel outside the Old St Mary’s Church. Above – Pat, Pauline and Chris Ryan invite all those with an interest in the Irish heritage of the region to a history event at Assisi Place next Saturday 14 March.

DELVING INTO

HISTORY BY JEREMY SOLLARS

hey say St Patrick's Day is a day when everyone is Irish, but in the Warwick region true Irish roots run deep and wide. And an upcoming historical event will be a chance to share your family history and perhaps broaden your own knowledge and understanding of the contribution those of Irish stock have made to the area. Next Saturday 14 March - the weekend before St Patrick's Day - all those interested are invited to Assisi Place in the Old St Mary's Church in Warwick to enjoy presentations from a couple of speakers for whom Irish history, both family and more general, is a true passion.

T

Pauline Peel and Pat Ryan will present 'From Bullock Carts To St Patrick's Day: The Irish in Warwick, 1880s-1970s'. There's no shortage of Irish names around these parts but it's quite possible certainly for the younger generations - that the rich history of the Irish in Warwick, and indeed across the Darling Downs, is a subject well worth further examination. While the arrival of the first Irish convicts on Australian soil in the early years of penal settlement from 1791 was something of a cultural turning point at that time, waves of Irish immigrants as free settlers in Australia since the late 1800s enriched our social fabric in the same way as have so many others from all corners of the globe. Interestingly, the 1891 census counted

as many as 228,000 Australian residents as Irish-born, around 30 per cent of immigrants at that time from the British Isles - that was at the peak of Irish immigration to these shores. But over the ensuing decades many more Irish folk made a passage to Australia, looking for a new start in a land of promise for a variety of reasons, and the independence of the Irish Free State from Britain in 1922 did not diminish their numbers. And those numbers stayed strong after the Second World War, although dropping slightly in the 1960s. For our local purposes, Irish immigration to Queensland is of particular significance, with some 12,000 Irish-born immigrants arriving in the Sunny State between 1881 and 1886.

Many of those took up land parcels across the Darling Downs, including around Warwick, Swan Creek, Killarney, Emu Vale and Yangan - with some of the local vistas in green times no doubt reminding them of the 'old country'. For Pauline Peel - nee Booth - the local connection is a Swan Creek one. Her Irish-born great-grandparents established the family farm in the Swan Creek district on which she grew up, and while Pauline has lived and worked in Brisbane for many years regular visits to Warwick have been occasions to look forward to with understandable family pride. "The Warwick and wider region had water, timber and rich soil and offered opportunities for immigrants to get a foothold in Queensland," Pauline says.

Meet our friendly team Brice, Jack & Chris

freetimes.com.au

"By 1911 the percentage of Warwick's Catholic population had grown to 32.1 per cent. "In his book, 'Warwick and the Irish', Father Peter Murphy wrote that 'Warwick's population was always close to 40 per cent Irish, born in Ireland or here - the men had come in the 1870s, 80s and 90s, as shepherds or railway workers, and the women as domestics'." St Patrick's Day - just in case you'd forgotten - is coming up shortly on Tuesday 17 March and was until the early 1970s a major celebration in Warwick, and as Pauline points out had "national prominence". "Many people still hold strong memories about St Patrick's Day in Warwick, and the history of the celebrations is the topic of my talk on Saturday 14 March," Pauline told the Free Times. Pauline's colleague and fellow historian, Irish-born Pat Ryan - from County Cork to be precise - has called Australia home for the last 40 years and has previously resided in the Killarney area, and now lives in Warwick. Pat's presentation next weekend will trace the experience of one Irish family from County Clare who migrated to the Southern Downs in 1883, recorded by Pat back in 2003. Their particular story was told by their granddaughter who knew her grandfather when she was a young child growing up in Warwick. "Her story provides a living link to her grandparents' journey of migration and settlement in Warwick - a place she recalled as having a 'big Irish Catholic community'," Pat says. "The story draws on a combination of her own memory of her grandfather and from research she conducted into her family history. "My particular interest in collecting oral history was to understand how the descendants of the early immigrants preserved their ancestors' memory in family history, personal items of clothing, jewellery or household items that accompanied the emigrants on their journey to their new homeland. "An important aspect of the oral history project was to understand what those earlier migrants told their children and grandchildren about their life in Ireland. "And why they took the decision to leave." ●

WHAT’S ON ... · Next weekend's event is a historical talk entitled 'From Bullock Carts to St Patrick's Day: The Irish in Warwick, 1880s-1970s' · Saturday 14 March, 2020, from 3pm to 5pm, Assisi Place, Old St Mary's Church, Warwick · Afternoon tea provided - gold coin donation · All welcome - you don't have to be Irish - and Pauline and Pat encourage locals to bring along their own stories and memorabilia, including photos, relating to their own Irish heritage

SPEAKERS - PAT RYAN (‘CELTIC CROSSROADS’) AND PAULINE PEEL (ST PATRICK'S DAY) Pat Ryan Pat Ryan migrated to Australia from Ireland some forty years ago and has developed an extensive knowledge of the Irish in Australia in this time. As an oral historian, she has published accounts of Irish migration to Australia, including the Warwick district. She was a long-time broadcaster and presenter on the Radio 4EB Irish Program. She is also an accomplished researcher, policy writer and community worker. Celtic Crossroads: local memories of a Global Irish Hub, 19th - 20th Century Pat traces the experience of one young Irish family from County Clare who migrated to the southern Darling Downs in 1883. Their story was told by their grand-daughter, Mary

Mary's story provides a living memory of her grandparents journey of migration and settlement in Warwick - a place she recalled as having a 'big Irish Catholic community'. Mary's story comes from her own memory of her grandfather and from research she conducted into her family history. Pat recorded Mary's story in January 2003. The paper was presented by Pat at the 2018 Irish Studies Conference at Sydney University as part of a panel 'Faugha-Bhallagh (Clear the Way): Irish Settlers, Symbols and Celebrations in Warwick, Queensland'. Pauline Peel Pauline Peel has a passion for family and local history. Pauline grew up on a farm at Swan Creek on a farm established by her Irish born great grandparents, George Booth and Mary Ann Campbell/Keenan/Booth from Co Tyrone. Pauline's parents were the late Des Booth MLA and the late Marie Booth (nee Brosnan). In 2018 she published 'The Family from Elagh Hill', which explores Pauline's great grandparent's origins in Co. Tyrone and their transition and life as farmers in the Warwick district. Pauline has been a senior public servant in local and state government.

SYNOPSIS: THE DAY WE CELEBRATE: ST PATRICK'S DAY, WARWICK 18721972 Warwick's St Patrick's Day program of celebrations included a procession, dinner, concert and race and sports program, and was a prominent feature of the town's calendar from

Irish jaunting car, St Patrick’s Day, date unknown. Picture: FR JOE MCKEY ARCHIVES & MUSEUM 1872 to 1972. Drawing on personal memory, oral interviews, research and a rich archive of 100 years of local newspaper reportage, Pauline tells the story of the history of the celebrations during this period. With a particular focus on the signature procession and dinner she explores how the celebrations successfully transitioned across several generations of people of Irish heritage in the Warwick area.

THE STORY PAULINE WILL RELATE AT THE FORUM ... Pauline tells the story of St Patrick's Day in Warwick, 'The Day we Celebrate, from 1872-1972'. She recalls the prominent role that St Patrick's Day played in her Catholic upbringing when the year would start with preparations for the Swan Creek district float. Pauline will take the audience on a 100-year journey from 1872 when it was celebrated by a banquet, through to the 1960s and 1970s when it was almost a weeklong celebration. She will consider the images, themes and speeches of the celebrations organised by the 1st generation Irish migrants and the way these evolved with the times and the generations. She will use images of past St Patrick's Days to illustrate her talk.

SOME STATISTICS ... The earliest reference to St Patrick's Day that Pauline has found is 1872 when the Warwick Examiner and Times reported on the celebrations. The celebrations evolved into a multi-day celebration that straddled the decades up to 1972 when the celebrations came to an end. ●

NEWS PIPE BAND RAISING FUNDS The Warwick Thistle Pipe Band is seeking sponsors and donations to help fund a trip to Russia to perform at the World For Peace Festival in April this year. The Band's most recent trip representing the region was to Sydney last October where they performed at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Spokesman Chris Donaldson said the trip to Russia is "the most amazing opportunity this band and its members have ever had in the nearly 100 years since the band's inception". "Some of our members have never left Australian shores and many are children who will learn so much about the world and its people from this opportunity," Chris said. · Donations can be made through a GoFundMe page set up at https://gf.me/u/ xndj2w or Google 'GoFundMe' and search on 'Warwick Thistle - Banding Together In Russia'. ●

Entries are being called for the 2020 Warwick Show Prime Cattle and Prime Sheep and Lamb competitions. The Warwick Show will be held Friday 20 to Sunday 22 March. Cattle entries close at noon next Friday 13 March and sheep and lambs on Wednesday 18 March. Interest in this year's prime competitions is expected to be as strong as ever and entries - particularly in the sheep and lamb categories - should reflect current and recent conditions, including intensive feeding used as a response to drought conditions. An extra category has been added to the sheep and lamb entries - 'Single hogget or 4 tooth any breed’ - reflecting an increased demand for mutton in the market, yet another indication of the effects of prolonged drought.

Stanthorpe Apple and Grape Harvest Festival HUGE WEEKEND AT APPLE & GRAPE

Festival entertainment and the partyfilled atmosphere will spill out into the streets, on the big finale weekend 6 - 8 March. Crowds will gather for the Channel 7 Grand Parade and the Rebel Breeze FM Street Carnival, which will bring Australia's #1 whip cracking entertainer, Nathan 'Whippy' Griggs' and an explosive paint and light show to the streets with SoundStruck Percussion drumming. A big line-up of live bands and an eclectic mix of buskers will fill the air through the finale weekend, though the most impressive musical spectacle belongs to the gathering of hundreds who will gather in brass bands, pipe bands and

thunderous marching drum bands who hit the streets en-masse after the street parade on Saturday 7 March.

FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS ... The second weekend ('the big one'!) Friday 6 - Sunday 8 March · Three days of food, wine and entertainment at the Heritage Bank Food & Wine Fiesta · Saturday 7 March - Channel 7 Grand Parade; the very messy Queensland Grape Crush Championship!; Southern Downs Steam Warwick to Wallangarra steam train journey. · Program and ticket information visit www.appleandgrape.org ●

12442652-NG09-20

Stanthorpe is set to roll the second big weekend of the 2020 Apple and Grape Harvest Festival. It's only held once every two years and this year's festival is tipped to be as big a celebration as seen since the festival first started 'crushing it' in 1966, with organisers inviting visitors to 'Holiday Here This Year' on a trip to Queensland's cool Granite Belt. Known for its messy grape-stomping antics, the 2020 festival program delivers all the favourite harvest events: the fun of grape crushing; a hotly contested apple peeling competition; plus a longer 3-day Heritage

Bank Food and Wine Fiesta on Friday 6 to Sunday 8 March. The Food and Wine Fiesta brings together the Granite Belt's gourmet foods, award-winning wines and craft beer all to one location under the shady trees and picnic tables, all to the tunes of non-stop live entertainment. Delivering even bigger this year on what has always been a family-friendly festival, there's much excitement about a new Kids Zone adjoining the Heritage Bank Food and Wine Fiesta, located right next door within Weeroona Park with thanks to new support from Woolworths and the Foundation for Regional Renewal in Partnership with the Australian Government.

A man has been charged by the Warwick Police after assaulting the chief executive officer of the Southern Downs Regional Council David Keenan last Wednesday 26 February. The Free Times understands the man attended the front counter of the council offices in Warwick in company with a female person and began verbally abusing the customer service staff over a dog-related matter. Mr Keenan happened to enter the foyer accompanied by the District Police Inspector with whom it is understood Mr Keenan and Mayor Tracy Dobie had

been meeting upstairs in the council administration building a short time earlier. The man is believed to have lunged at Mr Keenan and assaulted him, drawing a small amount of blood and tearing Mr Keenan's shirt. It is understood it took up to four people to restrain the man who was detained until more police arrived and arrested him. He was taken to the Warwick watchhouse where he was later charged with common assault, obstructing police and public nuisance. He was later released from custody and is due to appear in the Warwick Magistrates Court on March 25.

BOWLED OVER BY APPLE AND GRAPE Sport in Stanthorpe takes a back seat for the annual Apple and Grape Harvest Festival. The tone was set for another successful festival as Buskers hit the streets of Stanthorpe last weekend. Guests and locals were bowled over by the quality of the performers. Organisers report all sorts of records were set. On Sunday, I'm sure there were more than a few records of the eating variety set at the Banchetto. While their Stanthorpe counterparts are enjoying a glass of vino or three; the Warwick cricketers will be vying for the A Grade Condamine Cricket Trophy. Good luck to both teams. Cricket Australia officials are hoping the Cricket gods are shining on them for the final of the Women's T20 World Cup scheduled for the MCG this Sunday. I'll be at the MCG supporting whoever makes it to the final. If your chosen sport is Cricket, Racing (a big weekend of racing) or if you fancy a round of Apple and Grape. - enjoy. - Casey ONE OUT OF THE BOX Warwick golf pro Sam Eaves only qualified for the New Zealand a few days before the event. He went into the tournament hoping to play an even four rounds of golf and heading in to the final he was well pleased to be at seven under. His tournament was about to get a 'hole' lot better. On the par three 13th Eaves played the shot of the day and perhaps the tournament landing a hole in one. The prize for the hole in one at the 13th a Hyundai Kona Electric to be donated to a charity of the public's choice. Following the public vote, the car will be presented to the New Zealand Mental Health Foundation. Of course Eaves did not leave empty handed - he picked up a cheque for $50,000 for his ace. It capped off a good performance for our local Pro. He finished in a tie for 14th place; 10 under par and more than a little shell shocked. Undoubtedly the performance of the weekend for a Southern Downs Sportsman. Eaves was back at the Warwick Pro Shop this week unsure of when he will play his next tournament and processing a whirl wind four days in the land of the long white cloud. Despite his success Eaves is back in the Warwick Pro Shop this week. THOMPSON ON SONG Sporters were on the course early Sunday morning playing in perfect conditions. Michael Thompson was certainly in tune with his game and the conditions. Thompson had a great round. He claimed the win, returned the Best Gross score and picked up the pin shots at 12 and 17 along the way. Ian Anderson was the runner up while Angelo Maugeri and Tony Steele figured in the run downs. Michael Thompson added to his haul by winning one of the meat trays but he did leave one for Mark Lynam. Due to Apple and Grape there will be no Sporters this Sunday. Golf returns on March 15 for the popular annual Maureen Bates Memorial Day. The nine hole Two ball Ambrose kicks off at 9.00am and is a shotgun start. FOUR TABLE MITCHELL Members of the Stanthorpe Bridge club met last Thursday and played a four table Mitchell with 32 boards. N/S winners were Margaret Brooks and Christine Dennis. Dell and Helen Reeves were the runners up. Margot Tesch and Carol Axworthy were freetimes.com.au

The Stanthorpe swimming pool celebrates turning 50 in 2020 and Kay Dillon is one person who has plenty of memories of early mornings at the pool. (To this day she has a phobia of cold water). Kay was the Darling Downs 100m freestyle age champion from 1973-1975. Kay was back in Stanthorpe for the Italian Banchetto on Sunday and shared memories and stories of the early days of the pool. Kay is pictured with brother Geoff Dillon. the E/W winners while Carole Lihou and Peter Barry placed second. A reminder to all Bridge players that the club's Annual General Meeting will has been set down for Thursday. March 26, at 9.30am. All nominations and Notices of Motion must be in the hands of the Secretary by the. March 12, 2020. ON FAMILIAR TURF Shirley Page was back on familiar turf last week when she joined players for the weekly Golf Croquet game. Evans a long time member of the club teamed with Shirley Page in a game against Janet Raub and Liz Ellway. Evans scored a respectable seven hoops and her partner three but honours went to Raub (7) and Liz (6). Janet Raub was the player of the day scoring two holes in one and had a great jump shot. Judy Locke (3) and Liz Ellway (6) both played well defeating Shirley Page and Janet Raub 9-6 in the next game. A & G CUP - BARKERS OWN FESTIVAL Stanthorpe golfers were early to embrace the Apple and Grape festivities. Competition was fierce last Saturday with players keen to add their names to the Apple and Grape Cups. The event was sponsored by the Festival committee. Thanks to Festival President Max Hunter who presented the trophies. Brendon Barker had his own personal festival happening on the course. Barker returned nett 67 for the round, three shots ahead of the field and two shots under par. After a count back, Mark Hendry was named runner up leaving Aaron Simmers heading the run downs. Both players retuned a nett 70 score. Sandra Morris also had a great round. Her winning score of nett 69, five shots clear of the field in the race for the Ladies Cup. Runner up with nett 74 was Helen Jones and the first run down was claimed by Neta Thouard (nett 77). The Best Gross (Men's and Ladies) turned out to be a family affair. Matt Waterworth (75) won the Men's and Nikki (92) the Ladies'. Tomorrow, (Friday) golfers will hit the fairways for the Apple and Grape Two Ball Ambrose sponsored by Crisps Coaches. With a shotgun start at 9.00am all players MUST be at the club no later than 8.30 to allow play to commence on time. There is a time sheet for this on the board at the clubhouse and those intending to play,

please note this is a "Teams" event and a playing partner is required. Golfers have a rare Saturday free this week to enjoy the Apple and Grape Festivities but will be back in the swing of things the following week. GATEBALLERS ON THE GO A busy morning for Gateball players last week as Andrea Denkewitz, Jenny Tunbridge, Grace Howard and Peter Goodsir, formed Team One. Their Team Two opponents, were Les Williams, Pat Schnoor, Heather Widderick and Eric McLellan. Team Two opened their account with a win in the opening game. Both Schnoor and Williams played some accurate shots. Scores were close until the last turn when Schnoor scored a gate and then put two balls onto agari. The final score 14-8 in Team Two's favour. They continued the winning form into game two with an 11-10 win. The winning roll continued in game three. It was another close game but once again Les Williams was playing well as Team Two snatched another one point win (score 10-9). Team One left their best for last running away with a 20-9 win. Andrea Denekwitz sparked most of the opponent balls out and scored an agari. Peter Goodsir also found his form scoring two agaris in this game. 2019 GF REPLAY IN WARWICK Colts won their way through to the 2020 Warwick Cricket Grand final after defeating Wheatvale last weekend. John Cleary starred for Colts scoring 72 not out. In a replay of last season's final Colts will now meet defending premiers Maryvale on Saturday in the grand final at Slade Oval. RSL SNATCH MINOR PREMIERSHIP After trailing Valleys on the leader board all season, RSL has come home with a wet sail to snatch the Stanthorpe Cricket Minor Premiership. South's and Valleys will battle it out for the remaining spot in the finals. RSL prevailed in a catch up game from round 15 on Friday night lights. RSL won the toss and elected to bat. Despite getting away to an excellent start and some good batting at the top of the order (Dowie 34; Garland 35 Brady 26) when the lights took effect the complexion of the game changed. RSL were all out it the last over for 145. The 145 total looked a gettable ask for Wanderers however the loss of their openers who went cheaply made the task difficult. A

steady fall of wickets followed with the only real resistance coming from Andrew Einam (41) Brock Patti (17) and Jamie Carnell (26). Wanderers all out for 118. VALLEYS FALTER Valleys needed only a win over Wanderers last Saturday to keep their Stanthorpe Minor premiership hopes alive. Alas they slipped at the final hurdle. It was a must win game for Wanderers who were in a battle with Souths for the remaining spot in the finals. Valleys looked to be on target at 0/47 in the 13th over but the loss of openers Andrew Middleton (22) and Curtis Allen (30) upset the ship. Wickets tumbled with no-one able to put together a steadying partnership. Valleys were dismissed for 102. Eddie Filmer the main destroyer taking five wickets. In reply it was not plain sailing for Wanderers who started poorly. Openers Mitch Drayton and Tim Harslett out cheaply and early doors it was 3/8. A healthy contribution of wides and a couple of no balls ensured Sundries played a big roll on the scoreboard. Valleys would not be pleased with their bowling performance. Jamie Carnell (54) top scored while Alec Harslett showed his experience holding up the other end and frustrating the Valleys bowlers. Eventually dismissed for a duck after facing 22 balls. Wanderers got home by two runs. SCHUBERT LADIES CHAMPION The Ladies took over the greens at the Summit last weekend. On home base they played Ladies Singles Championships. Knock out games were played on Saturday and games continued into Sunday with the final played Sunday afternoon between Tina Schubert and Pam Moore. In a real single's shown down the Championship went to Schubert by just one shot. Final score 21-10. Meanwhile the Men from the Summit fell just short in the Men's Club Challenge played in Inglewood last week. The team went down by just one shot. A reminder that nominations are Open for the Men's Singles Championships which will be played over the weekend of March 28 and 29. Please do not nominate if you are unavailable BOTH days. MAY THE BEST PETER WIN. Peter Tunbridge and Peter Goodsir went head to head in the opening game at Ricochet Croquet last week. Tunbridge barely missed a ball playing with great accuracy to race away to victory with two runs of three in his overall total of 26. Goodsir picked up in the second half of the game as he scored on run of three and three runs of two. The final score 26-17. Andrea Denkewitz also got away flyer against Jenny Tunbridge and Sharyn Roser. By attacking and splitting up her opponent's balls she scored four quick hoops. Despite her impressive start her opponents hit back to take the lead and hold on to it after Denekwitz missed a few shots. In a nail biting finish Denkewitz found her range and pegged out to win the game by a shot. DOWN TO WIRE Week five of the Tanny classic had everyone striving for major points. Self-appointed King of the green at Tanny, Bretto "No 1" Grayson helped his team to a big win over the ole Fox Stu Hoffman's team. With only one round left in the Tanny Classic it will be a no holds barred race to the wire. After five weeks Jessie leads nut they are snapping at his heels. Big finish coming up on Friday. â—?
