Beaconsfield Primary School IT takes a team to build a dream! We are the Prep team at Beaconsfield Primary School. Whilst our beautiful classrooms and play spaces and wonderful learning resources enhance your child’s school life and learning experiences; it is our beliefs and the way that we work together that makes Beaconsfield Primary School unique. The teacher - student relationship is treasured at Beacy, it underpins our work and our beliefs. We believe that every child: ■ should be loved and accepted for who they are - unconditionally. ■ is accepted for who they are, and we expect them to accept and show compassion for other children in the same way, welcoming and including them. ■ can learn in a safe, positive and supportive environment. ■ should be respected, recognised and valued for their diverse needs and abilities. ■ should be challenged so that they reach their potential - holding expectations high. ■ should have a teacher that understands them and teaches with passion and commitment. ■ deserves a teacher who models honesty and ethical behaviour so that they in turn learn the value of truthfulness and accountability. Student voice is encouraged at Beaconsfield Primary School - Every Face has a Place: ■ from Prep to Yr. 6, all children have the right to be heard. They have a voice and a turn to speak.

Our Foundation Transition Program helps your child to become familiar with our school through specialist learning activities and play based sessions. Children will be well supported by their new teachers as they build their confidence and increase their readiness to start school. It is incredibly rewarding for both parents and teachers to watch our children grow socially, emotionally and academically during the program and throughout their early years at Belgrave South Primary School. The program also gives us the opportunity to welcome and involve parents in our Belgrave South Primary School community. We run sessions especially for parents to explore what the early years of school involve and how we can work together to ensure that students make the best start to school. Engaging Students via Augmented Reality CAPTIVATING students attention and interest is a central challenge for all teachers wishing to make a real difference. That challenge was put to my colleagues and me throughout our years in training to become teachers. That was then, many years ago, and it remains so now. Technological advances have brought with them wonderful opportunities with which to enhance the engagement of students in their learning. Paradoxically, they have simultaneously also brought with them, frustrating distractions. How then to maximise the positive opportunities, whilst minimising the negatives? Insofar as minimising the distractive potential of digital technologies, the Victorian Department of Education & Training have introduced a ban on mobile phones use by students during school hours, with limited exceptions. On the other hand, how can schools capture the potential of digital technologies to best engage students in their learning? There is certainly no shortage of software available that teachers can access with this intent. That is only the beginning - Immersive Experience STEM Education (IXSTEM), an acronym, by the way , which was non-existent just a few years ago, offers new and exciting pathways to engagement. At Berwick Lodge Primary School, several years ago we embarked on a journey focused on better engaging kindergarten children in their learning as they transitioned to primary school.

8

ELC - Primary Learning

Technological advances have brought with them wonderful opportunities with which to enhance the engagement of students in their learning. This culminated in the publication of an Augmented Reality (AR) illustrated story book, titled, The Adventures of Harry the Helmeted Honeyeater & Hettie the Forest Keeper late last year. Building on the success of this initiative this year we have introduced learning units on creating AR characters for our students. Simultaneously we have partnered with Deakin University in a research project on the potential of AR to enhance student engagement in their learning. As educators we owe our children our best efforts to provide them with the richest of learning opportunities and having them loving to learn is the bedrock. Why not check us out? Your Child’s Transition to School STARTING school is a big step for you and your child. It can be both challenging and exciting. As families, the support you give your child is important because you are your child’s first and most important teacher. Tips for transition Below are some tips on how you can help your child have a positive start to school. The year before school ■ Ask your child what they think about starting school. ■ Encourage your child to ask questions about going to school. ■ Help your child stay healthy. Make sure they have regular health and dental checks and keep immunisations up to date. ■ Encourage your child to try to do things on their own such as dressing, going to the toilet, washing their hands, unwrapping their food and opening and closing their drink bottle. ■ Talk to friends and other families about what school is like. ■ Attend transition-to-school programs and activities at your child’s early years service and school. ■ Talk to your child’s early childhood educator about things you can do at home to help your child’s learning and development. ■ Talk to the school about how you can engage in your child’s learning and development at school. ■ Ask the school what time your child starts on the first day and where to take them. ■ During the summer holidays ■ Show your child where the school is and talk about how you will get there. ■ Arrange play-times with other families whose children will be going to the same school as your child. It helps if your child knows another child at their school at the start of prep. ■ Practise the things your child will need to do to get ready for school (e.g. putting things in their bag, remembering to take a hat). ■ Confirm your before or after school care arrangements. Show your child where the outside school hours care facilities are and talk about how they will get there.

14

ELC - Primary Learning

Be positive about starting school and enjoy your child’s excitement. ■ Visit your local library and read books with your child about starting school. The first day of school ■ Make sure your child knows who will take them to school and pick them up on the first day. ■ Help your child to organise their clothes, hat, shoes and socks the night before. ■ Help your child to pack their school bag with a snack, drink, lunch and a hat. ■ Place a spare pair of underpants and a change of clothes in a plastic bag. Let your child know these clothes are in their bag in case of any accidents at school. ■ Put sunscreen on your child in the morning if it is needed. ■ Show your child where you will meet them at the end of the school day. ■ At the end of the day talk to your child about what happened at school. The first year of school ■ Find out about what your child is learning at school. By doing this, you can support your child’s learning and find out how your child is adjusting to school. ■ If your child is having difficulty at school, talk to their teacher. Your child can also say what they think might help them. ■ Keep talking to your child about school. Ask them about their new experiences, what they like and what they find hard. ■ If your child attends an outside school hours care service, find a way of sharing your child’s school progress with the staff. ■ Share feedback about your child’s experience of starting school with the school and early childhood service. ■ Organise time for your child and their new friends to play together outside of school. Local early childhood services and schools will organise their own transition-to-school programs and activities each year. To find out more, talk to your child’s early childhood educator or contact the school where your child is enrolled. ■

Importance of effective primary learning CHILDREN learn an amazing amount as their learning journey continues through primary school. Primary school education continues in Years 1 to 6 where children receive a strong foundation in eight core subject areas: ■ English ■ Mathematics ■ Science ■ society and environment ■ technology and enterprise ■ languages ■ the arts ■ health and physical education. Literacy and numeracy are important learning areas. Learning focuses on ensuring your children understand mathematics, and learn to read and write competently. Many schools have specialist literacy and numeracy teachers to help your children develop these important skills. Programs are designed to build natural curiosity and foster inquiring minds in the area of science and technology. In society and environment, they learn about the history and traditions at the heart of Australia’s democratic society. Teachers plan for a balance of activities based on the learning needs of your children and other children in their class. In some instances specialist teachers teach the class, for example in art, music and physical education. The classroom layout is more formal than Preprimary with students sitting together in groups or rows. Your children spend more time working at their desk and in small groups. Set days and times are allocated to each subject area. If your children are having difficulty with any of the learning, speak with their teacher. Homework and study Homework reinforces and supports the things your children learn at school. It is designed to get your children thinking and applying what they learn in different ways and encourages them to become independent learners. During the first years of primary school homework involves fun activities such as:

16

ELC - Primary Learning

reading with your children every day encouraging your children to draw, write and tell stories ■ practising using numbers ■ encouraging your children to observe things in nature and to ask questions. As your children progress through school, they receive specific tasks and projects designed to apply their knowledge in different ways - for example creative writing, oral presentations and assignments. You can help your children by: ■ setting aside a set time each day for homework (also allow time for play and relaxation) ■ setting up a ‘homework space’ where your children can do their homework ■ setting up a schedule for big projects that take longer to complete so they are not left with one day to finish it ■ letting your children have a go at their homework first before helping them ■ asking your children to explain what they have done - explaining things in their own words is a great way to learn ■ checking your children’s homework when they are done for the day and working through any errors together ■ knowing where your children are up to with their homework so they do not fall behind. If your children are having problems with their homework or with a specific subject or project, ask their teacher to spend some extra time helping them through the task. Talk with your children’s teacher about the school’s homework policy for more details. Ref: http://www.education.vic.gov.au ■ ■

Glendal Primary School “WHEN my children go out of the door to school each morning, the most important things in my life, by a long way, go to you - the school.” Parent This quote is at the forefront of our minds at Glendal Primary School. The sentiment expressed underpins our work with our community, our learning and wellbeing programs and importantly our decision making. Student growth is our core business and we place a high value on how we go about developing our young students so that they grow up as articulate, resilient, successful learners who are confident in themselves and their relationships with others. Glendal Primary School is renowned for its reputation as a dynamic and exciting school. Our differentiated curriculum is a feature of our school whereby teachers promote the learning of all students, acknowledging their differing learning styles, ability levels, interests and talents in the teaching and learning programs they deliver. Our student learning programs are underpinned by our comprehensive student wellbeing programs and our core value of ‘Respect’. ‘Respect’ is embedded in all our interactions. We also focus on developing responsibility, resilience, teamwork, community and creativity. A prime example of our success in developing these skills is highlighted by our Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics programs, in particular robotics and coding, which are taught across the school from Foundation to Year 6. Our school robotics team ‘Cosmo Bots’ recently won the National First Lego League (FLL) Robotics National Championship South in Melbourne and they have been invited to represent Australia at the FIRST LEGO League ‘City Shaper’ World Festival held in Houston, Texas in April 2020. This is the fourth time we have represented Australia in International competitions for robotics. The core values of the FLL program align with our school values. We promote that friendly competition and mutual gain are not separate goals, and that helping one another is the foundation of teamwork. The Cosmo Bots’ have developed an Augmented Reality experience, as part of the competition, which is accessible via a smart

Grossek’s View Grossek’s view Should we be rejoicing? Karen was in turmoil. Not in the sense that anyone might notice. After all she was alone in her car, driving to work against the traffic in outer Melbourne. It was a pleasant trip - Particularly so, knowing that the traffic snarl, crawling at snail’s pace toward the city was an experience that she could watch from the safety of her car as she headed to her school in outer Melbourne. Karen was a principal of a large public primary school, and had been for five years. Notwithstanding the many frustrations and fears that dappled her love of her job, she was now reflecting on why she wasn’t supremely excited at the breaking news that Victorian primary school students were ranked best nationwide in seven of the 10 tested areas in NAPLAN. Thank goodness, she thought aloud, fortunate indeed to be heading away from the city centre at this early time of the day. That, at least, gave her time and opportunity for her mind to wander from her driving, ever so slightly. Ironic, Karen thought, that on the same day that the 2019 full, national NAPLAN report was published, heaping relative praise on Victorian primary school Year 3 and 5 results, media coverage included alarming data on the rates of anxiety of primary school aged children. The nationwide survey of primary school leaders conducted by the Australian Primary Principals Association revealed growing concern among school leaders that the rates of student anxiety was becoming a significant issue for schools across the country. Karen’s train of thought was abruptly broken by the jangle of her mobile phone. She daren’t answer it, chiding herself as she resisted the temptation, reminding herself that she had again forgotten to reconnect her phone to her Bluetooth facility so obviously available to her in her car. Never mind, she mused - most likely another issue over which she could become stressed. Delayed stress was a condition that Karen was increasingly helping her get through the moment, but only the moment. She realised she was in survival mode, but what else could she do?

Surely success in developing ethical citizenship in our students deserves more than a footnote when dispensing attention and accolades to schools for their achievements, when compared with NAPLAN Shortly she would be turning left into the street before her school, a beautiful, tree-lined street, a perfect setting for last second, self-indulgent calmness. For some reason, completely unknown to Karen, she pulled over to the roadside, some fifty metres short of the entrance to her school. It was early autumn and at 7.15am still quite deserted and silent. As she turned the engine off and leaned back in her seat, her gaze caught the shafts of sunlight breaking though the leaves of the plane trees on the nature strip - a favourite for local councils in that area. Closing her eyes, Karen’s mind drifted back, back to a forum meeting for principals of government schools, held just two weeks earlier. Karen attended these forums on an ad hoc basis. Some she went, some she didn’t. Held several times throughout the year across the different education regions in the state, they were a means by which large gatherings of principals could be brought together and be provided with up to date policies and directions in state education. Some were interesting, many were not. Karen wasn’t sure about this one, but it was early in the year and her optimism was refreshed. Much of the day was blur, but not so an animated discussion between a senior bureaucrat and a clearly frustrated principal. If nothing else, for some it was a few minutes of energetic entertainment, but not for Karen. The bureaucrat had eloquently laid out the Department of Education & Training’s (DET) big picture plan for the year. Much of what he said seemed to make sense to Karen, most especially

that which tugged at her heartstrings. The overall picture - that we are all doing a great job, but that there are areas in which we could all do better, fell somewhat flat, not just with her, Karen noted. It wasn’t so much that it wasn’t true. Of course there’s always room for improvement, she had thought at the time, but like so many others in the audience, she had heard it all before and by default began bracing herself for the inevitable. Unsurprisingly, the bureaucrat’s presentation turned to NAPLAN. We needed to do better he exhorted his audience of silent principals with an accompanying set of graphs to reinforce his point. Nimbly, he moved on to statistics that demonstrated the link between poor literacy outcomes for students with poor employment outcomes, poverty and unhappy life outcomes. Karen and her colleagues were then regaled by an intriguing anecdote, drawn from the bureaucrat’s earlier life as a teacher. His story centred on two former students, both experiencing life’s tougher lessons at an early time in their lives. One went on to a successful adult life, the other not so. His point being that he has always wondered whether there was more he could have done for the student who grew up to be a train wreck. It was a powerful point at which to conclude his presentation. The room was silent for more than a moment. Frustration was evident in the principal’s voice and demeanour as he rose to question the bureaucrat - his question morphing more into a statement as he spoke. He made just three points, as Karen recalled, sitting quietly in her car in the leafy street, just up from her school on that sunny morning. Firstly, beginning with the tale of the two boys, he rejected what he felt was little more than emotional blackmail. Parents beat themselves up over their kids too often - wondering where they went wrong with one of their children but not the others. Visit any staffroom and teacher conversation more often than not turns to the children not doing so well. As if teachers are anywhere near the most important influence on the life chances of their students. Significant yes, but not to the point where they should be held more responsible than for which they should. Besides which, most teachers, are suckers for such arguments - could we have done more?

Well educated adults had let society down, and badly so in all cases. Where is the focus he argued, on acknowledging schools that did great things with respect to maximising good citizenship? Now on a roll, the principal turned his attention on the bureaucrat’s focus on the connection between poor literacy and numeracy outcomes for students and diminished life outcomes, including that of destructive adult life behaviours. Karen was struck by his message. His message being that it was all well and good to focus on the literacy and numeracy skills of these students, but what about those students with high achievement in literacy and numeracy yet led adult lives deeply destructive in society. He drew on recent revelations with respect to the financial services industries, the Victorian police, the Royal Commission into child abuse and even the banker schools scandal which beset the Victorian public school system not so many years ago. Well educated adults had let society down, and badly so in all cases. Where is the focus he argued, on acknowledging schools that did great things with respect to maximising good citizenship? Surely success in developing ethical citizenship in our students deserves more than a footnote when dispensing attention and accolades to schools for their achievements, when compared with NAPLAN. Karen took a deep breath, readjusted her seat belt and switched her engine on. Another long day was about to begin. Henry Grossek Principal, Berwick Lodge Primary School ELC - Primary Learning

We want every child in our community to actively learn how to

shape their world Tucked away in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges, our school has been continually serving learners for over 140 years. Throughout this time, we have worked out that quality learning takes time. So does trust, and the same is true for building relationships. So this is what we do.

This happens through the ‘3Rs’ and ‘4 Big Ideas’ embedded at The Harkaway School.

The 3 Rs. Relationship - High quality learning happens when trust, respect and care are present. Relevance - Our learners will go deeper, make stronger

We take the time to know and value every student. We work out what they know, understand and can do. Then we lead them to what they’re ready to learn next. connections and apply their knowledge when learning is life-worthy and meaningful.

We want every child in our community to actively learn how to shape their world. If we want our students to make a difference with their lives - then we need to make a difference in their lives.

Rigour - We are all on a journey from novice to expert. We expect and celebrate excellence.

The 4 Big Ideas Team Teaching Teachers plan, teach and reflect in teams. Like all good learning! Multi-age Classes Students are predominantly grouped according to what they are ready to learn. They are not grouped simply because of age or year level. Our classrooms are huge and fine-tuned for learning. DL-2.0 Through our program of inquiry, students co-design, socially construct, have voice and are self-discoverers.

Global Mindedness Our students are part of their planet and are confident to engage with all of its’ peoples and the messy complexity of an interconnected global humanity.

Mentone Girls’ Grammar WE believe children are never too young to be challenged as we help them achieve their goals driven by a genuine love of learning. As an openentry school, we accept students of all talents and abilities, faiths and cultures. We are consistently ranked among the top schools in Melbourne and our students regularly win prizes for sporting, artistic and academic endeavour. We also have an impressive track record of VCE success and university entry. This is why since 1899, generations of students, staff and parents have been proud to be part of our vibrant learning community. Our beautiful beachfront location has inspired our WAVES priorities. These key principles guide the way we meet the particular learning needs of girls by contributing to their Wellbeing, Achievement, positive Values, Enterprising nature and Success. These priorities contribute to the unique culture and success of our school, as well as our personalised approach to learning. In our Early Learning Centre (ELC), specialist early childhood teachers recognise the different ages and stages within each class and provide tailored activities so every girl has power over her own learning. We provide a highly developed program of intentional teaching based on the principles of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP) which supports a unique blend of inquiry and play-based learning.

36

ELC - Primary Learning

We can see the benefits of our education, not only in how ready our girls are to enter Prep, but how advanced their reading and writing skills are, as well as their social and emotional confidence. This is why we are currently rated as “Exceeding National Quality Standards” in the national ELC Frameworks Accreditation. The PYP framework is extended in our Junior School as students develop more complex intellectual, emotional and social skills. They are exposed to a diverse program of inquiry and challenged in many areas from music and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), to financial and digital literacy, cultural understanding, leadership and social enterprise. They are encouraged to try new things, take-risks and be bold, tapping into their interests and passions. Teachers develop a rich picture of every student’s learning successes, strengths and challenges, and each girl is supported to grow and develop to her full potential. As a result, our Junior School is recognised as one of the best in the state and consistently ranked well above state and national averages in the NAPLAN literacy and numeracy testing. Most importantly, our students develop confidence, capability and self-worth that are great assets to them in their senior years and beyond. www.mentonegirls.vic.edu.au info@mentonegirls.vic.edu.au

Conversation with Little Miss Lola By Alexandra Browne-Hill BABY Lola came to play with me while her parents went to work. At 5 months old, Lola’s eyes broadcast a wisdom beyond her age and it is difficult to miss my grand-daughters zest for life. Life is crazy busy and I admit to being an over achiever. On the other hand Lola is a good natured busy body, thriving on discovery and studying all events deeply. Her looks piercingly size up everyone. My plans of putting her into bed during the day while I went into achievement mode were scuttled right from the beginning. Lola had no time for sleep. With a screech of brain brakes, I was forced into a new thought paradigm. Focusing on the future and over-shifting the mind into perpetual manifestation creates a challenge of its own. One forgets to connect to the present. Although both Lola and I are go-getters, my focus is always planning for tomorrow. Hers is about happenings in her present world, in all its fullness right now. Children have a way of pointing out the delights of learning something new, or observing something previously unnoticed. As Lola lay on her blanket outside and under our backyard tree, I watched her sweet face relax into a tiny smile while she soaked in the sights of the leaf movements and the antics of the birds. I began to follow her example. She looked up at me and beamed with eyes that contained many questions, completely mesmerised from second to second. My thoughts drifted to my own children and the race for living that I had dragged them through, fun and not. I do not recall having enough of these times with my own. I had thought that I had become more present following the death of one of my teenage children, regretting my failure to be totally with him more. I can see that even still, I miss the mark. My rounds of practice in mindfulness and being present are guided by Lola today. There is something special and restful in suspending thoughts and activity to simply be with her. It is freeing and energising, joyful and peaceful. I know myself to be forward looking, moving like a firecracker lit and thrown up high, exploding into creative arrangement at high speed. Yet this is

rarely in cohesion with my present and never results in a sense of peace. Lola sums me up and patiently waits for me to continue naming the enthralling experiences she finds in front of her in her NOW moments. Her tiny presence recalls me to the exact second of present time which has no past and no future. I cannot regret the past nor be constantly in the future while I learn how to sit quietly, happily in this second where I find my peace. Lola reaches out and takes my finger, squeezing it as she grins her shining smile into my eyes. There is now and it is perfect. www.alexandrabrownehill.com.au alexandra.browne.hill@gmail.com Mobile: +61 409 009 924

Principal’s Message As Principal of Solway Primary School, I am extremely proud of our wonderful school community. Solway is at the centre of a connected community, actively involved with the school and valued for the generosity of time, energy and expertise that its members bring to the school. Our school motto ‘Our Best Always’, exemplifies the school’s work ethic and permeates the entire school community. The School‘s core values of Respect, Responsibility and Integrity are embedded into the school culture. Teachers are committed to ensuring students have a safe, caring and positive learning environment to thrive in. Daily Circles are used to develop positive relationships and foster open and honest communication. Student safety is a high priority, as teachers understand students learn best when they feel safe and happy. Solway is committed to the development of globally aware, civically minded lifelong learners and the importance of educating the ‘whole child’ through high expectations in literacy and numeracy and encouraging students to create and innovate through a rich curriculum. This is assisted through the provision of quality specialist programs in Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Japanese, Science, Physical Education and Sport. These programs are highly valued and supported by the school community. The specialist programs are further enhanced by a range of engaging and enriching whole school programs and extra-curricular activities both within and beyond the classroom. A strong emphasis is given to educating our students to live healthy, balanced lifestyles through the promotion of healthy eating, exercise, leisure pursuits, respectful relationships and active citizenship. The physical environment is important with careful planning from the Building and Environment sub-committee of School Council to ensure the buildings and grounds are well maintained. In 2019 a new Prep Playground was installed and a new artificial oval installed with a 2 lane running track and long jump run up. All this is a result of a very successful fundraising program, with the generosity of time, planning and financial contributions by our parents, families and local community. Our well maintained grounds comprise of a balance of landscaped areas and green space which allow students the freedom to run, encourages creative outdoor play and provides for participation in a variety of organised sports. In 2018 Solway celebrated 10 years of sustainability, of which we are justifiably proud. As a 5 Star Sustainable School under the ResourceSmart Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative (AuSSI Vic), our Sustainability teams work hard to continue our achievements in the 5 areas of Water, Waste, Energy, Biodiversity and Curriculum. The whole school Inquiry throughline of ‘Sustainability’ ensures that this remains a focus for classroom studies across the school. Our staff are all members of a Professional Learning Team. Teams work collaboratively with each other and are collectively responsible for the learning outcomes for the students in their care. Teachers are allocated regular time to plan, monitor, evaluate and support student learning in their areas. Classroom displays and a consistent approach to the language of learning, make learning visible for students and support continuous growth. Two Assistant Principals and a Literacy Learning Specialist, support teachers to ensure an evidence based approach to high quality teaching and learning. Digital technologies are employed in interactive and engaging ways across the school, to build students’ knowledge and skills in navigating an increasingly digital world. These tools are used purposefully to support personalised curriculum, and encourage students to be collaborative, creative and innovative in their learning. Our Robot Club and robotics program, provide coding opportunities for students and further support the digital technologies curriculum. As an accredited eSMART School, we recognise the importance of supporting our students and their families to develop the skills and knowledge to practise cyber safety and understand their responsibilities when using technologies and interacting online. Before and After School Care is provided at our Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) Hall, along with a school Holiday Program which is available during school vacations.

St Clare's Primary School STATE-OF-THE-ART facilities, passionate staff, a genuine sense of self-worth and a clear vision based on Gospel values. This is what St Clare’s Primary School in Officer offers. As a new school which opened in 2015, enrolments at St Clare’s are growing rapidly. As part of the parish of St Patrick’s in Pakenham, the school is on site with the Early Learning Centre and the Officer campus of St Francis Xavier College. For those in the catchment area, this provides a seamless transition from early childhood to secondary education. Each learning space has been designed to provide a rich environment conducive to relevant, meaningful learning. Areas are spacious and well-resourced so as to meet the needs of the 21st Century learner. With our final stage of classrooms due to be finished this year which will include a new playground and sports field. Before your children even come to school, you, as parents, have taught them so much. They’ve learned to listen, to ask questions, to be filled with wonder, to say thank-you, to wash their hands, to pick up after themselves and to look out for each other. Our job at St Clare’s is to continue these life lessons and nurture the holistic development of each child. For the St Clare’s family, numeracy and literacy skills are core elements of education;

Our job at St Clare’s is to continue these life lessons and nurture the holistic development of each child. but so is Religious Education - developing empathy, social justice and a strong moral compass. We encourage active play and healthy bodies; understanding other cultures through learning languages; and the confidence that comes with developing creativity through the performing and visual arts. Student achievement is measured not only by academic growth but by each child’s emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing. Being part of faithfilled community instils our students with a sense of identity, a feeling of belonging and above all, a powerful sense of self-worth. At St Clare’s our aim is to have each child reach their potential; to be a well-rounded individual - within a supportive and caring learning environment. Our school prides itself on educating the whole child: the academic, social, emotional, physical and spiritual. The wellbeing of each child is paramount and underpins all that we do at St Elizabeth’s. We see the education of your child as a partnership between home and school. We are an inclusive school, where all are welcome to be a part of our faith community. We believe that together we can nurture and foster each child to achieve their full potential. It is through our Catholic traditions, values and beliefs that this comes to fruition. As a faith based community we continue to build on our outstanding work that has been achieved in all curriculum areas through our contemporary approach, which we invite all to be a part of. We encourage all our children to be global citizens, where they make informed and wise decisions that will not only benefit themselves but also for the common good. We instil in our children the importance of persistence and resilience, and that it is important to take risks and make mistakes, as this is when the most powerful learning occurs. We recognise that every child is unique; each having special needs, abilities and preferred learning styles. It is our aim to help children grow and develop their special abilities, selfconfidence and self-esteem. We believe that for each of our children to flourish; to be engaged in their learning; to be independent; to take responsibility for their choices and learning, requires all within our school and parish community to have this same vision, dedication and commitment, which we continually strive for. We promote independence, collaboration, creativity, innovation and above all respect for all, in a safe and caring environment. As a school we strive for the absolute best for our children and their families. Our pursuit of academic excellence for each child is achieved through a dedicated staff, who use a contemporary, relevant and collaborative approach to learning. Our staff provide all our students with a wide range of opportunities to engage in rich, learning experiences in and beyond the classroom, where the needs and interests of our students are at the forefront. Our vision is one that needs to be visible and enacted in all that we do and will be driven through various wellbeing and curriculum initiatives. It needs to come alive not just through our words, but our actions too, which we endeavour to harness in all. Our community needs to be inclusive, where all of our relationships are based on respect, treated with fairness and equality. We would love for you to become a part of our amazing community!

Celebrating life and hope CATHOLIC education’s faith-based values have much to offer students, as they are challenged to take action for a better world and a more just society. Catholic schools are places where life and faith are celebrated. Director of Catholic Identity, Paul Sharkey, says: ‘We have named our vision of education “Horizons of Hope” because we believe that one of the greatest gifts that can be given to a young person is the gift of hope. ‘Students need to feel a sense of belonging, purpose and connectedness in their lives’, Paul continues, ‘particularly in the face of the many challenges of our diverse, complex and everchanging modern world. ‘Our students are encouraged to embrace a view of themselves and the world that provides them with a sense of hope and purpose in their lives. It adds to their resilience and capacity to make a difference.’ Denise Hussey, Principal of St Michael’s School in North Melbourne says, ‘The child is at the centre of all that we do. We don’t just focus on their cognitive needs, but also their spiritual, physical, social and emotional development. It’s all about the relationships we develop with all those who are part of our community.’

We have named our vision of education Horizons of Hope - the greatest gifts that can be given to a young person is the gift of hope Catholic education seeks to equip students with the tools to shape a greater understanding of themselves and their world, and to take action and leadership positions in the establishment of a better society. Melbourne’s Catholic schools welcome all families who seek a Catholic education for their child, confident that what we are offering not only sets our students on a path toward lifelong success and fulfilment, but gives them the skills and confidence to inspire others to build a better world. Elizabeth Hanney, Principal of Ave Maria College in Aberfeldie, lives this every day. ‘Catholic educators know that students are at the heart of all our endeavours’, she says. ‘Catholic schools are places of hope and generosity, of forgiveness and newness, of excellence and inspiration.’

School improvements for Sale diocese SCHOOLS take seriously their responsibility for achieving real gains in a range of outcomes for their students. Schools look always to improve the quality of their teaching and learning and the supports that surround them. Indeed, the Catholic school is called to offer the best learning experience that it is able to do in the best circumstances that it is able to provide. This commitment is evidenced in a public way through the efforts schools make to keep parents in particular, and the wider community in general, informed about school successes, activities and priorities for improvement. Schools have well established means of examining themselves in a positive, self-critical way, seeking to improve the quality of its life across all its dimensions. Our schools are also acutely aware of their responsibility to their community. Each school is accountable to its parents, the first educators of their children, to the parish and to the Bishop from whom its mandate derives. That accountability requires honest and comprehensive processes of self-appraisal and clear reporting to those with a right to know.

There are obligations and expectations that must be met, which include administering the NAPLAN tests and for reporting on school performance information to all parents. Schools have well established means of reporting information about the performance of the school to their community. The Catholic school is fully aware, too, of its accountability to Governments, both State and Federal. There are obligations and expectations that must be met, which include administering the NAPLAN tests and for reporting on school performance information to all parents. The school keeps these obligations always in mind and ensures that they are always met. For further information please refer to: www2.ceosale.catholic.edu.au

“...two educators I admire told me about a public elementary school that I simply must visit.
