Sports clubs unite amid virus fears
By Justin Flynn Ocean Grove traders are pleading with Bellarine Peninsula residents to shop locally as the coronavirus, known as COVID-19, takes hold. Ater a quieter than usual summer season, local business owners are being hit hard as the virus spreads and forces the closure of events and gatherings. Tami McAdam runs Piping Hot Chicken & Burger Grill, which has been an Ocean Grove institution for 40 years. “It’s all very well going and raiding the supermarket but we have 20 people that work here and their livelihoods depend upon that. he shop’s been here for 40 years and we’d like it to be here for next summer,” she said. “If we don’t get support, we won’t be open next year. “We’ve been sanitising everything and we have a strategy that we may just have to do takeaway and delivery for a ive kilometre radius. We’ll have plenty of food, our suppliers have plenty. We have plenty of fresh food and will be making salads, burgers and chickens.” Ms McAdam said she had received an order for passionfruit sponges from a group of women who were planning a “happy” small gathering. “hey were having a day where everybody had to tell a really happy story,” she said. “hey weren’t going to talk about the virus at all – they were going to drink Pimm’s and eat passionfruit sponge and just have a happy time.” Ocean Grove Business Association president Ty Simons, who also owns Dritwood Cafe in Ocean Grove, said business across the region had started to slow down weeks ago. “People out there, the local community, need to rally behind us if they want us to still be here,” he said. “Come and spend your money, even just a little bit. Phone us, don’t go on the internet.” Mr Simons said it was also up to business owners to adapt and innovate and said casual workers could be the ones to sufer the most. “If we start planning now and budgeting and rostering for it, we can lessen the impact,” he said. “We’ll do what we can for them [casuals].

We’re all in this together. “We’ll get through this, but we have to be smart about it.” Cathy Staehr, from newsXpress in Ocean Grove, urged business owners to check their
insurance policies and talk with their landlord. “he economic impact is terrifying,” she said. “All small businesses in town should go and discuss things with their landlord. Check your insurance policies now.”
Ocean Grove community sports clubs, including the region’s footy codes, have united in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Ocean Grove Football Netball Club, Ocean Grove Cobras Junior Football Club and Surfside Waves Soccer Club representatives met ater news that their seasons were postponed. AFL Barwon announced on March 17 that all community football and netball had been postponed until May 31 in light of the COVID-19 health crisis. AFL round 1 games went ahead, with the AFL announcing a reduced 17 round season. Ocean Grove Football Netball Club and Ocean Grove Cobras Junior Football Club issued a joint statement saying they were in constant dialogue about the challenges they faced. “We are well aware of the impact that this pandemic will have on our community and are determined to both play a role in helping the broader community over the diicult coming months,” the statement read. “With a combined social media presence of almost 4000 followers, one simple thing that we will both do is to use our platforms to support our sponsors, many of who are local businesses who have supported us year in and year out.” Meanwhile, Football Federation Australia conirmed sanctioned local soccer competitions would be suspended until April 14. Surfside Waves Soccer Club (SWSC), issued a statement to members, players and families, stating club training would continue. “he oicial advice from Football Victoria, our governing body, is that training can proceed as normal … as long as we do not break the new State of Emergency laws that prohibit crowds of 500 plus gathering for non-essential events.” Mark Heenan

Accidental kick a lifesaver By Justin Flynn When Nathan Clit’s young son accidentally kicked him in the groin, he had no idea it would probably save his life. Nathan, 34, was playing with son AJ in October last year when an unintentional kick to the groin prematurely ended the fun. It was painful and still sore the following day. Nathan went to a GP, who sent him to hospital for a check to be on the safe side. Scans showed a build-up of luid on his right testicle, which was put down to the trauma of the blow and it was suggested the situation be monitored. A week later the pain was still there – further tests revealed testicular cancer. Days later, Nathan’s right testicle was removed. It was a total shock for the Cliton Springs resident and Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club member. “One hundred per cent AJ has probably saved my life,” Nathan told the Voice. “Who would have thought a kick to the balls would do that?” In January, ater a mandatory three-month check-up, Nathan was told the cancer had spread to his lymph nodes and he need to undergo a nine-week cycle of chemotherapy. he tumour had also encroached on one of his major veins. Nathan spent his irst week of chemo at Andrew Love Centre. He described the staf as “the most beautiful, beautiful human beings”. His wife, Claire, is due to give birth to the couple’s second child in June. Nathan’s prognosis is still good. “It’s very common to have to have that happen,” Nathan said. “he doctors say it’s got the best prognosis out of all the cancers out there, but it’s still scary.” Nathan’s message to blokes out there is

to swallow your pride and check yourself regularly, for yours and your family’s sake. “If something doesn’t feel right, get it checked. here’s no harm in getting it checked and get a second opinion if you want,” he said. “I’ve got three shining reasons to come home to every day and I’m thankful that I just had that thought of getting it checked.” Nathan is attempting to become a career
ireighter and is currently a polished concreter. “I really enjoy working, so it’s hard for me to take time of,” he said. He tries to ind humour in the situation. “I’m coming in it and ighting and with a good attitude,” he said. “here are a heap of jokes that can be said in this. hings like ‘I’m not as ballsy as I once was’ – you have to stay positive.”
Claire is a paramedic and has had to juggle a lot during the past few months. “It’s draining, that’s for sure, with a toddler, being pregnant and a sick husband,” she said. “hat’s life and you do what you have to do.” Nathan and Claire’s friend Amelia has organised a GoFundMe page to help with medical expenses. Keep calm and stay informed By Cr Jim Mason As we know, the news is dominated with headlines about the evolving coronavirus (COVID-19) situation. It can be hard to wade through it all without feeling a bit overwhelmed, which is why I think we need to remember the simple things we can do on a personal level. It’s vital we stay calm and do our bit to help prevent the spread of the virus, with regular hand washing with soap and water, and by sneezing or coughing into the bend of the arm. On a local government level, the health of the community, city staf and volunteers is the number one priority for the council and the city. he decisions being made are based on the latest advice from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). If you head to www.geelongaustralia.com. au you’ll ind a ‘Coronavirus Support’ page, which details the impacts to city services, facilities and events across the region. I also recommend heading to the DHHS website at www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/coronavirus for health-related advice and resources. I want to also let you know that a survey we’re running as part of a feasibility study into an information and livestock exchange has
been extended until April 3. he study is about understanding what services and information farmers, producers and landholders with animals would ind helpful to run their property, protect the environment and buy and sell their stock eiciently.

As chair of council’s Rural and Peri-Urban Advisory Committee, I can think of many possibilities of what a 21st century facility might look like. It could include physical and online components to share information and develop a sense of rural community. We’re keen to hear from all farmers and producers across Greater Geelong, including small stakeholders with stock or agricultural pursuits. Just head to the Geelong Australia website and type in ‘farming survey’. Given farming and food production is vital to our region’s food security and economy, it’s important that these industries are supported. 12444890-NG13-20

Support now at hand A golden wedding anniversary is a major milestone for any married couple, but Heather and Peter Broughton will have more reason to celebrate when the day arrives in July. he Broughtons’ Ocean Grove house is inally it for purpose ater the successful completion of bathroom modiications late last year, all funded by the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Heather, 69, has lived with schizophrenia for almost all of her married life. She started experiencing episodes shortly ater the birth of their irst child at the age of 20, and Peter has been her prime carer ever since. “When it irst came on, ater the birth of my daughter, they misdiagnosed it as post-natal depression,” Heather says. Back then, the Broughtons say the stigma associated with mental illness resulted in them losing support – and almost all contact – with their families and friends. “I was a sparky and had to keep working, oten night shit, to keep the family aloat as there was almost no support back then,” Peter says. “We soon had two young daughters and, with Heather being hospitalised three or four times a year, we had to rely on our local community to get by. “he stigma’s still there but nowhere near what it was, and with the NDIS we’ve inally got the support we need. “We’ve lived in our home for 35 years and before the NDIS came along it really wasn’t set up properly for Heather’s changed circumstances.” Heather joined the NDIS in 2014 as part of the early Barwon Trial, and in 2016 the Broughtons used Heather’s plan funding to install a ramp at the front of their house. Heather’s NDIS plan funds a range of other assistance, such as home cleaning and a support worker.

New delivery options for businesses With the rapid spreading of COVID-19, the Voice put the call out to local businesses to indicate if they would be ofering contactless pick-up or delivery over the next few weeks or months. With social distancing already in place and those with symptoms of COVID-19 being asked to self-isolate, and a total lockdown not out of the question, the local community may

Shopping locally also helps keep our local economy ticking over, just at a time when they need it desperately. his is by no means an exhaustive list and only represents the businesses who replied to the Voice’s social media posts. here will be many more businesses that will ofer this service, and our readers are
