Cafes and restaurants can still operate but are restricted to takeaway - a measure which has left the Shingle Inn cafe at Fountain Gate Shopping Centre in a dire situation as he was forced to lay of five workers. "I don't know what will happen this year. I can't predict anything but clearly I don't have any income," the owner of the cafe, Sunil Ariyaratne, said, who had seen a big drop in customers due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Shoppers were also sparse at Fountain Gate, he said, with the normally bustling area
turning into an eerie solitude. Mr Ariyaratne added he was also stressed about his 21-year-old daughter, a medical student in England, who has been asked to help in a hospital as the country deals with the Coronavirus outbreak. Degani Bakery Cafe owner Ayman Beshay, also at Fountain Gate, had also been forced to lay off staff and was losing money fast. In Cranbourne, Kelly's Hotel, which has been a popular watering hole for over a century, have resorted to a pick-up menu service through its bottle shop, which has remained opened and complies with social distancing rules with a tap and go service through a window.
"In these particular moments in time there is no major issue because all the staff are paid ... it's next week when the money doesn't come in there's going to be the issue," the hotel's manager Michael Goldie said. City of Casey CEO Glenn Patterson said the welfare of the business community remained a top priority. "Our team of economic development officers are available to speak with businesses to help navigate the options available from the Federal and State Government. Additionally, we are developing a package of local initiatives to offer support and relief to our community. This will be communicated when available," Mr Patterson said. 12445629-NG13-20
With the emergency shutdown of cafes and restaurants across the Casey region due to the Coronavirus crisis, many businesses are hurting. Through these troubling times, Star News has unveiled a new a 'Shop Local' campaign to help businesses stay afloat, which will run across Star's publications. "We are encouraging local people to buy locally and provide as many struggling businesses as possible the opportunity to get their messages out that they are still open for business or to let readers know about their changed operating methods," Star News Group managing director Paul Thomas said. Mr Thomas said everyone had been impacted by the crisis and together "we can only try to reduce that impact as much as possible". "Our own business has had a significant detrimental impact. Please shop locally, help an impacted business and keep as many people employed as we can." It comes as the Victorian State Government ordered a shutdown of non-essential industries such as cafes, restaurants, pubs, clubs,

IN BRIEF Man charged over shooting
Covid-19 measures By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 500-strong police ‘coronavirus’ taskforce and a shut-down of “non-essential“ services has been announced in a bid to “save lives“ during the Covid-19 pandemic. The “non-essential” businesses will be shut down from midday on Monday 23 March, and government school holidays have been brought forward to Tuesday 24 March. As of early on 25 March, Victoria had recorded 466 coronavirus cases - up by 55 in the previous 24-hours. Premier Daniel Andrews announced that coronavirus police squad officers will increase spot checks on returned travellers in 14-day isolation as well as on limits to indoor and outdoor gatherings. Mr Andrews said police would not hesitate to enforce fines of up to $20,000 for breaches. It was confirmed that police had found a number of travellers breaching isolation rules, as well as intervening in misbehaviour at supermarkets. The crackdown was necessary because “unacceptable” mass gatherings at nightclubs, pubs and bars across Melbourne would otherwise “cost lives”. “It’s disappointing it’s come to this,” he said. In a dire warning, Mr Andrews said if the Covid-19 virus “gets away from us”, there will be a situation in which there won’t be enough critical-care beds, doctors, nurses and ventilators to keep people alive.
Daniel Andrews has announced Stage 1 shutdowns to combat the spread of coronavirus. If people acted “selfishly” and didn’t take the threat “seriously”, people would die. As a “Stage 1” of “unprecedented” service shutdowns, pubs, clubs, nightclubs, Crown Casino and licensed venues in hotels and pubs will be closed. Gyms, indoor sport venues, places of worship, cinemas and entertainment venues are also closed. Takeaway and home delivery services from restaurants and cafes are exempt. The Stage 1 bans will be in place until 13 April - though it is “highly likely” that the shut-
downs will widen and last beyond that date, Mr Andrews said. He said many Victorians were acting “selfishly” by flouting the rules such as indoor gatherings of 100 people and outdoor gatherings of 500. The new rules didn’t mean to “have your mates home and get on the beers”. He cited the example of a guest with Covid-19 infecting all the attendees at a dinner party over the weekend. “It’s not essential and it’s not appropriate.” Government schools will be closed for holidays from the end of the school day on Monday 23 March. It brings school holidays forward from Friday 27 March, giving schools the chance to prepare for the possibility of remote, online learning for students. “These are no ordinary school holidays,” Mr Andrews said, declaring that going over to friends’ places and hanging out at shopping malls as “not appropriate”. Kindergartens and child care services will be still open at this stage, Mr Andrews said. “I call on every Victorian to undertake their civic duty and practise social distancing: don’t be closer than 1.5 metres from another person, wash your hands and practise good hand hygiene.” For latest updates and advice, go to dhhs.vic. gov.au/coronavirus

A bikie clubhouse has gone up in flames in Cranbourne West after emergency services responded to reports of an explosion during the early hours of Thursday 19 March. Police found the Finks Outlaw Motorcycle Club clubhouse on Morialta Road extensively damaged by fire after attending the scene about 1.30am. The CFA sent four trucks from Hallam, Cranbourne, and Skye to the building where the blaze was brought under control within halfan-hour. It is believed no one was in the property at the time and no one was injured. Hours earlier, police were called to a supplement store on Nepean Highway, Frankston following reports of a fire just after 11pm. A short time later and distance away police were then called to a car on fire in Brunel Road Seaford about 11.10pm. Investigators are looking at the possibility that the incidents are linked. In the midst of increasing uncertainty and anxiety in the world, Berwick Fields Primary School has worked together to raise $1000 for a local not-for-profit wildlife shelter. Locky's Legacy Wildlife Shelter, in Upper Pakenham, has been working tirelessly to house and support the recovery of four wombats rescued from this summer's bushfires. On Friday 20 March, junior school council representatives from Berwick Fields proudly handed over the cheque to Lyndel and Don who operate the shelter. Lyndel and Don have expressed how useful the money will be to help build an enclosure suitable for the growing marsupials, before they are ready to be re-released to the bush. The junior school council at Berwick Fields, made up of one student from each of the 32 grades from Years 1 to 6, came up with the idea to hold a free dress fundraiser to support a local agency helping those affected by the recent bushfires. Students were asked to dress in colours that represented the bushfires to them. There were students wearing red, orange and yellow, as well as koalas, firefighters and more, showing and talking about the gratitude and respect for those that were on the frontline during what was a tough summer in Australia. It was decided through a vote by the JSC representatives that any money raised would be donated to Locky's Legacy Wildlife Shelter, after a staff member highlighted the selfless

Mum’s life-changing loss By Brendan Rees After tipping the scales at 87 kilograms, mum Courtney Thursfield knew she needed to make some lifestyle changes. Her motivation came two years ago after her daughter, then aged four, was about to start kindergarten. "I didn't want to be that big mum with a kinder daughter," Courtney, 32, of Lyndhurst said. "I realised I had to stop using baby weight as an excuse." After embarking on her weight loss journey including exercising and healthy eating Courtney is back on the netball court after dropping 27 kilos. Now at 60 kilos, Courtney says she feels "absolutely fantastic". "I've got so much of my energy back, so much of my health ... I don't think I realised how unhealthy I was." And she did it all without having to sign up for a gym membership. "I walk a lot; I play netball," she says. "You wouldn't find me in a gym and I still huff and puff when I run around the netball court." Courtney said she came across a healthy meal plan in a copy of the Healthy Mummy magazine which inspired her to make the first steps in leading a healthier and happier life. "It's just a fantastic way to follow along with meal ideas and sticking with your calories," adding it's for "real mums that don't have a whole lot of time". Years ago Courtney suffered a sporting injury and underwent a knee reconstruction, and lost total faith in her body. In fear of doing more damage did nothing for over two years and gained weight.
Courtney Thursfield reveals her amazing wight-loss transformation.

"We hope that this construction phase will be completed in the coming months, and we are all looking forward to having full use of our new and refurbished facilities," she said. Director of Catholic Education for the Diocese of Sale, Maria Kirkwood, said she was pleased St Catherine's had managed such a seamless recovery. "It's a testament to the hard work of the school leaders at St Catherine's and the Catholic Education Office that classes were able to continue almost without interruption after such a major incident. "We thank God for the good health of the young builder who was injured, and pray for the continued safety of everyone involved in construction work at the school," she said. Students will be starting school holidays from Tuesday 24 March - in line with advice from Premier Daniel Andrews who announced all Victorian schools would have their last day of school for the term on Monday 23 March to limit the spread of coronavirus. 12445562-DL13-20
Students from St Catherine's Catholic Primary School in Berwick will soon be able to enjoy classes in brand new and refurbished learning spaces, as the school continues to recover from a fire which gutted 12 classrooms a year ago. Repairs to the damaged building, along with the construction of new classrooms and administration areas, is nearing completion. Firefighters responded to a fire after a gas rupture caused a building to explode into flames about 11.40am on Monday 8 April. The fire is believed to be related to work on a construction site at the school. Acting principal Pauline Moran said that the students, staff and parents at the school had shown outstanding resilience over the past 12 months. "Our wonderful school community has maintained a really positive attitude. They have coped with a range of challenges, including moving into relocatable classrooms. We have even noticed some pleasing benefits as result of the changes, such as splitting break times for students," Ms Moran said,"We still

Gyms unite to keep us fit By Brendan Rees As the Coronavirus leaves many hunkered down at home, staying active has never been more important. That's the message from a group of Berwick fitness club owners - who have united - to support not only their members but the wider community as fears of the coronavirus outbreak continues. The owners of Myomax, Personal Performance Training Centre, UFT Playgrounds, and Bfirm Personal Training say they are determined to "make a difference" by easing people's anxiety in coping with the pandemic. They're encouraging everyone - "no matter what" - to "keep moving" and not feel "trapped in four walls" in the wake of tougher social distancing measures. "As much as these are difficult times we're going to support you through it," the group says. It comes as the Prime Minister announced gyms nation-wide would be forced to shut from Tuesday 24 March to stem the spread of Coronavirus. The measures mean people will be making big changes to their workout routine. However, the team of Berwick gym owners are stepping up to offer online videos and fitness tips to keep people healthy - even if they're not a member of a fitness club. While the owners of the Berwick gyms are tailoring fitness programs for their members, there were many workouts they said that people can do from home which all counted from using weights, stairs, a yoga mat, boxing and body weight exercises or simply walking. Exercising is also an easy way to boost people's immune system and fight off illnesses, the group says. The gym owners say they will deliver their

The State Government's Findmyschool website has been updated so parents continue to have the latest information to find out the school zone they live in. Minister for Education James Merlino said the updates include school zones for the 14 new schools opening at the start of 2021. The website allows parents to find their closest Government school and other nearby government schools, giving parents clarity and consistency on what their public school options are. Schools can be found by typing in a residential address or searching by school name. Findmyschool will show the zone for the current enrolment year and the 2021 enrolment year. No student currently enrolled in a school will be required to change schools. When the site was launched last year, it was the first-time school zone maps became easily accessible in one place, giving schools and parents access to an official source of information on government school zones. Minister for Education James Merlino said: "The website takes the guess work out of identifying their closest government school, giving parents the clarity they need when deciding which school to enrol their child in."

Here is how one reader reacted online: Bella Tracey: That's all well and good but one problem they need to stock their shelves unfortunately people can't get the necessities they need due to all the people who thought it was OK to over buy and only think of themselves. Everyone needs to eat and because of selfish people everyone misses out that includes the people that could be ones that have to save your life a loved one's life etc. Maybe these stores should keep all the stuff out the back that are being selfishly taken so it allows everyone to be able to buy it.

Hotel gets knocked back By Brendan Rees A proposal for a three-storey hotel near the Hampton Park tip has been knocked back ... but the developer says he's determined to take his fight to VCAT. Casey Council refused to grant a permit for the planning application for 760 South Gippsland Highway in Lynbrook at council's public meeting on Tuesday 17 March. Barnes Capital have proposed to build a 100-room hotel, comprising of a function area, fitness centre, a terrace, and 74 car parking spaces at the site where a 7-Eleven service station currently stands. Casey council rejected the plan - which was lodged in April 2019 - on the grounds that the Hallam Road landfill posed a "potential risk" to the public as well as their health and wellbeing. Casey Council administrator Noelene Duff said she accepted the recommendations raised by council officers and therefore refused to grant a permit. "There's non-compliance with the general residential zone, non-compliance with the council's development plan for Lynbrook and Lyndhurst, and a number of the other items you have raised," Ms Duff said at the meeting. "I do agree with your recommendation to issue a notice of decision to refuse to grant a permit," she told council's statutory planning and compliance officer Nick Moore. Ms Duff added: "I also note in the report the many applications for this site - some of which have been accepted by past councils and other refused or withdrawn so this is a very complicated site." Mr Moore said the "principal issue" with the proposal was the site's proximity to the existing landfill, with odour, dust and the risk of an "explosion or asphyxiation due to landfill gas migration" flagged as other concerns.
An artist impression of the proposed hotel in Lynbrook. He said while the hotel may provide "needed short term accommodation" for the region but the risks "greatly outweigh any positive outcomes". The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) had also objected to the plan, advising council: "The proposal includes sensitive land uses encroaching into the separation buffer of an operating landfill." "The proposal includes below ground structures that may be a pathway for landfill gas migration," EPA added. Sustainability Victoria and the Metropoli-

tan Waste Resource and Recovery Group have also backed the EPA in recommending against the plan with council saying activity at the site would also increase over the next five years due to the close of existing landfill sites in Clayton and the Mornington Peninsula. Barnes Capital managing director Martyn Barnes said he was "surprised" at council's recommendation to refuse a permit but understood council would not "go against EPA advice". He said in his opinion the health risks would be "minimal" and would prepare a
case for VCAT. "There's a childcare centre that's three doors away that's been approved," he said. "Unfortunately everybody's had to waste community and state resources and continue to clog up the VCAT process because of this issue and they keep getting approved." Ratepayers Victoria president Frank Sullivan said council had made the right decision which he explained was in the "best interest" of ratepayers' health - "not the greed of the dollar".

Police will proactively patrol places of mass gathering such as beaches and shopping centres to ensure restrictions are being complied with. The operation will be centrally managed out of the State Police Operations Centre and resourced by 500 police from Transit, the Public Order Response Team, and police across Victoria who will perform these checks and enforce bans. Deputy Commissioner Nugent said situations will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis, and police have a range of options available to deal with those who refuse to follow the directions of the Chief Health Officer. "People can be issued with an official warning, directed to return home, or charged on summons where a person repeatedly refuses to obey a direction or blatantly disregards the restrictions. People can also face heavy fines" he said. "We are urging people to take the restrictions seriously and do the right thing - don't be selfish is our message," he said. "For police, it's not just about fines or arrests but ensuring everyone in the community understands the serious risks associated with Coronavirus and the importance of complying with the directions from the Chief Health Officer. "We know this is a challenging time for everyone and we'll be asking our officers to use a commonsense approach when dealing with these matters. "Already we have seen a degree of ignorance
Police conduct a spot check wth a person in self-quarantine. Picture: VICTORIA POLICE where people think it's okay to just go out for a breakfast or to see a friend when it's absolutely not. "We also want to take advantage of Operational Sentinel to engage with the community, provide any further education around current requirements, and do everything we can to protect the safety of all Victorians. "It gives police the opportunity to check on the health and wellbeing of those in self isolation, and see if they need any further support such as medical assistance," Deputy Commissioner Nugent said. "So far, people are for the most part complying with the restrictions. We want to ensure that continues and people are showing each other the right amount of respect. "People who ignore the restrictions are placing others at significant risk, which means more people will become infected. This includes their family, friends and others in the community." At this time, no one has been charged with refusing or failing to comply with the direction. Fines for people who do not comply with the direction are $20,000 for individuals or $100,000 for companies or corporations.

Bunjil Place shuts down Bunil Place will temporaily close as Casey Council complies with new restrictions announced by the Prime Minister Scott Morrison. The venue closure means many upcoming performances and events at Bunjil Place have been either cancelled or postponed from Wednesday 18 March. The closure is applicable to the following spaces; theatre, studio, gallery, library, function centre, cafe, foyer and City of Casey customer service. Is comes as Mr Morrison announced measures including a ban on non-essential gatherings of 100 people or more in indoor spaces and 500 people in outdoor areas, which became effective immediately. As a result of these new restrictions, and to ensure the health and safety of our employees, council has decided to temporarily close its face-to-face customer service centres. Council's customer service centres located at the Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre and Bunjil Place will temporarily close until further notice as a protective measure against the spread of the Coronavirus. Casey interim administrator Noelene Duff
Casey council will temporarily close Bunjil Place due to the Coronavirus outbreak. said the measures had been taken to ensure that council looks out for the community including those most vulnerable to the virus while protecting its employees and ensuring
vital services can continue to be provided. "I want to stress to the community that the City of Casey is still operating. You will continue to see our Officers continuing to deliver
services in our communities," Ms Duff said. Over the past few weeks, attendance at Casey's Customer Service Centres has steadily declined. City of Casey CEO Glenn Patterson said council had seen a noticeable difference during February and March, with lower than normal attendance numbers at our Customer Service Centres, during what is normally a busy period with rates payments and animal registration renewals due. "Whilst we understand that many people do like to visit us at our face-to-face counters in the interest of public health, we have decided to temporarily close these centres," Mr Patterson said. "Our essential services continue to operate as normal. If changes occur to our essential services, our clients will be notified directly. "If residents need to make payments, we ask that you now contact us via telephone to organise payments or visit our make a payment page. "Council Officers are still available, please contact us via our call centre, website or via social media."
More ‘essential’ community hours launched by Coles Coles supermarket is dedicating two 'community hour' shopping periods per week to emergency services and healthcare workers, who are essential to protecting the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting Thursday 26 March, the first hour of trade on Tuesdays and Thursdays will be for emergency services and healthcare workers including doctors, nurses, paramedics, hospital and ambulance staff, police, firefighters and emergency service workers who hold an
AHPRA card, have a workplace ID or are wearing their work uniform^. Monday, Wednesday and Friday Coles 'Community Hours' will continue to be dedicated to vulnerable and elderly customers who hold a government-issued Pensioner Concession Card, Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, Companion Card, Seniors Card, Disability Card and Health Care Card. Coles Group CEO Steven Cain said the
move will help even more Australians access the essential groceries they need. "In the past week we have seen Community Hour help vulnerable and elderly Australians access essential grocery items during this challenging time. We are now extending this opportunity to those Australians who are protecting our community and keeping us safe," Mr Cain said. "We know these workers are incredibly busy
and hope that providing them with a dedicated hour at the beginning of the day to shop will make their lives a little easier and support the vital work they are doing every day." "We are also incredibly proud of our team members in-store who are working hard to get stock on to shelves as fast as possible, create a safe place to shop, and provide our customers with great service. We ask that our customers continue to show them kindness and patience."

Aussie exec wins prestigious award Janet Granger-Wilcox, general manager of corporate affairs at Aussie Broadband in Lynbrook, has been recognised for her stellar contribution to diversity in the workplace. Janet received the diversity initiative award, as part of the 2020 CISCO Women in IT awards. The awards event, which was scheduled to take place in Melbourne last week, was cancelled due to ongoing concerns about the coronavirus outbreak and winners were instead announced via email. "I am really humbled to win this accolade, because diversity is really important to us here at Aussie Broadband," Janet said. As general manager of corporate affairs and a member of Aussie Broadband's senior leadership team, Janet has led the company's diversity strategy and stance on social responsibility for the last three years. She is a passionate advocate of inclusion and is founder and executive sponsor of Aussie Broadband's corporate giving, wellbeing, diversityand inclusion and LGBTI network groups. "I believe that a diverse workforce brings unique experiences that help make our company stronger," Janet said. Her approach to diversity has not been focussed on any specific large project, but an absolute belief that it is the small things that make a bigger impact over time. Her "all the small things" strategy has focused on real actions rather than words on paper, so that diversity and inclusion have become part of the DNA of Aussie Broadband. As an example, in 2016 when Janet joined Aussie Broadband, she noticed there were no women working in tech support. She intervened with small actions - changing job descriptions to gender-neutral language, introducing gender-balanced interview panels and talking about gender balance at a senior leadership level. Today, nearly 40 per cent of the support team are female, and three women hold leadership positions. She has been instrumental in Aussie Broadband developing partnerships with a range of organisations, including Pride in Diversity, STEM Sisters, and Gippsland Shadow Day. She was a guest speaker at last year's Tech
General manager of corporate affairs at Aussie Broadband, Janet Granger-Wilcox has taken out a diversity award at Aussie Broadband. Inclusion conference in Melbourne and represents Aussie Broadband on the Telco Together Foundation's Domestic Violence roundtable. Janet strongly believes that senior leaders should get involved at a grass roots level, and so has participated alongside Aussie staff at events like the Midsumma Festival, "Go Girl, Go for IT', and Smith Family functions for disadvantaged kids in the Latrobe Valley.
She is also heavily involved in volunteering outside her work, particularly as a volunteer leader with Scouts Victoria. Janet has been nominated for her philanthropic initiatives and making a difference in the telco community in the ARN Women in ICT Awards 2019, and in 2019 was also awarded the Silver Koala by Scouts Victoria for distinguished service.
Kindness shines amid pandemic panic Small acts of kindness can get lost in times of crisis. The Sasa family of Cranbourne share their heartfelt story after rescuing an elderly woman who was left stranded at a shopping centre, reports BRENDAN REES. Miriama Sasa had just picked up her kids from school when she got a call from her husband to help an elderly woman battling to breathe. Her husband, Paul Sasa, was on shift as a security guard at Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre when he came to the aid of a distressed 76-year-old woman on Friday afternoon, 13 March. The woman, who walks with a frame, was fighting to breathe as her oxygen tank was running low. Mr Sasa spoke with the woman - before strict social distancing rules came in during the Coronavirus crisis - and found a phone number on the tank and organised for a replacement cylinder to be sent to her home. The woman, who had caught a taxi to the centre, was too overwhelmed and exhausted to go home alone - which prompted Mr Sasa to call his wife about the woman's ordeal. At this stage, Mrs Sasa was on her way to the supermarket with her four kids, some still in their school uniforms. "He told me just to drop everything and come over and help this lady," Mrs Sasa said. With her kids in the car, Mrs Sasa, a disability support worker, drove the woman home where they stayed and kept her company for a few hours. 10 STAR NEWS

They exchanged phone numbers and have maintained regular contact including FaceTime calls which the woman conducts with Mrs Sasa "and kids all the time now" as well as spending time together over dinner. Mrs Sasa, who was born in Samoa, said it was part of her culture to help the elderly: "That's what my husband did what he did; that's how we've been taught." Since her heartbreaking experience, she has shared her story on Facebook in the hope to inspire others. "It doesn't cost much to show kindness; our kids have learnt a lot from her experiences. We have made a new best friend forever," she said on the post. "The saddest thing today was she was using Pine O Cleen we use to mop the floors as hand sanitiser, she said she couldn't find any anywhere. So tomorrow we're on a mission to find her some hand sanitiser." When asked how Mrs Sasa's family was coping with the Covid-19 crisis, she said: "At this stage we're OK ... we believe in our faith. I know that I believe we're going to get through this." The Sasa family rescued an elderly woman who was struggling to breathe at Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre. Picture: FACEBOOK
Providing edge of hope By Jonathan McQuie In a simple parking lot outside Casey City Church in the middle of Narre Warren, a group of committed volunteers is providing hope to men on the margins of society through the simple means of food and friendly conversation. Once a month, volunteers set up large firepits and barbecues in the parking lot of Casey City Church. "We provide a meal and have some music and fellowship, and really encourage our guys to be really intentional about connecting with the people who attend." For Kevin and the rest of the team, it's this focus on intentional conversation that has the potential to really make a difference. "What we say about it is that together we create community where hope can be found. The cure for isolation is actually community." It all started when Kevin Manning's men's group heard about the high suicide rate in the City of Casey among men between the age of 25 to 40. Between 2017-2018, it's estimated that 13.3 per cent of males in the City of Casey, aged 18 and over experienced high or very high psychological distress. The key characteristics around the suicides which came to the attention of Kevin's group were things like social isolation, and loss of access to their kids. According to Mr Manning, this complex cocktail of events was causing much hopelessness. "When we go through these things as men, there's an element of pride and not wanting to ask for help, which just exacerbate the isolation." When they read that the majority of these suicides were happening on a Saturday night, they decided to take action. "One of those things we realised is that we couldn't really invite them to a Sunday service, because it's not necessarily meaningful to them with what they're going through." Saturday Night Life not only provides food and conversation, but also attempts to address the practical needs of the people who attend. There's Clean as Caspers' portable showers, and a store of donated clothes, including blankets and winter clothes to keep people warm as the weather turns cold. Clean as Caspers is just one of a plethora of local organisations attempting to reach out to those on society's margins. Mr Manning doesn't want to duplicate the work of these other outreaches, but rather to complement and help out with them, providing the Transit Food Van as an example. "Several people who are long-term Transit clients come across to Saturday Night Life, sit next to the fire, and are part of the whole thing of talking to people, and act accordingly. "We haven't had to give them a title or anything, but they're part of the community." While the ministry originally focused on men, it's quickly become apparent that women and children need community just as much. Unfortunately, there's been a distinct lack of female volunteers thus far. "We've had a real need for women to come along and be there. We'd prefer that women be there to connect with women, thus leaving the men free to the do the initial goal of reaching out to men." It's not just people from Casey City Church or on the margins who are needed to assist. Mr Manning would love to see other volunteers come on board as well. "We need a bunch of people for whom life is doing great who are willing to get to know people. You don't need to a have a degree, but you just need to be able to listen. It's about community." Kerrigan releases album By Brendan Rees Singer-songwriter Kerrigan La-Brooy is excited to soon be releasing his much anticipated Gospel album. The senior pastor of Gethsemane Church in Berwick said he was thrilled to make "a longawaited come-back" to the music scene after releasing his seventh studio recording and first Gospel 10-track album. "It's nothing short of a miracle," Kerrigan, a father of six said, adding he planned to release the album in April. Kerrigan, who has won an array of Casey and state awards, particularly for his volunteer work with the Gethsemane Charity which provides food and clothes to more than 400 people every day, said he was most thrilled one of the tracks featured his children aged six to 11. Kerrigan dedicated about 30 hours creating the album and apart from doing all the lead vocals, he also does some harmonies. He put his music career on hold after meeting his love Michelle, whom he married in 2007. The Sri-Lankan born musician had toured the world until 2008 and at one point "topped the charts" but says raising his "priceless treasures" with his wife had been his greatest reward. "I decided to return to the recording studio to raise funds for Gethsemane in order to continue God's work, spread the love of Jesus and extend the Lord's kingdom," he said. This is on top of hosting a radio show every Wednesday night on Casey Radio, running a children's talent academy and an opportunity shop, leading worship, organising the annual Clyde Carols by Candlelight, and visiting the poor and the elderly. He described his return to the recording studio like "a fish to water" and added "there will definitely be more than one album". The Gospel album, which is yet to be

Sikh community shines By Brendan Rees In a time of crisis, a group of kind-hearted Sikh volunteers have banded together by delivering free food to people's homes. The Sikh Volunteers Australia - a not-forprofit organisation based in Devon Meadows - are offering free food with home delivery services for the next two weeks to those in need due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The charity's vice president, Manpreet Singh, said since starting the service on 18 March, the volunteers had responded to 300 orders on the first day which was backed up by 460 meal deliveries the following day. "We have a few categories; we are not giving the food to everyone," Mr Singh explained. "We are giving to those people who are directly or indirectly affected by this virus especially disabled people, aged people who can't go shopping and they have to stay home," he said. He said they were also helping single mums, families who had recently returned from overseas, people experiencing homelessness, and those who had lost their jobs. The service was also targeting people who are in self-isolation across the south east with Mr Singh saying they had received three calls from people who had contracted Coronavirus. The home deliveries were in addition to the Sikh volunteers' weekly free food van which has been increased to three times a week during the crisis - where they provided 130 meals in one night after setting up their van in Frankston and Tooradin. Those grateful for the service have taken to social media sharing their heartfelt admiration for the selfless volunteers. "Thank you for your kindness. Hearts of pure love," one posted. "You are simply wonderful humans - thank you for what you do," another wrote.
Sikh Volunteers Australia have established a free meal home delivery service for those self-isolated due to Coronavirus. The food menu announced on social media includes gluten free pasta, veg soya curry, chickpea curry, veg korma and fresh salad. The Facebook advertisement said volunteers would deliver meals to people in Cranbourne, Tooradin, Hampton Park, Lyndhurst, Lynbrook, Junction Village, Devon Meadows, Narre Warren, and Berwick. Last December the Sikh Volunteers responded to the bushfire crisis by providing free meals to thousands of people at a relief centre set up at the Bairnsdale football oval. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced on 18 March for Australians to "stop hoarding" food supplies at supermarkets, labelling the behaviour as "un-Austra-

"It is not helpful and it has been one of the most disappointing things I have seen in Australian behaviour in response to this crisis," Mr Morrison said at the press conference at Parliament House, adding the government could impose limits if the panic buying continued. "Stop hoarding. I can't be more blunt about it. Stop it," he said. "There is no reason for people to be hoarding supplies in fear of a lockdown or anything like this." Twenty-nine new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed on 18 March bringing the total number of cases in Victoria to 150. The new cases include 17 men and 12 women, with people aged from their early twenties

New pavilion for softball The new Sweeney Reserve Softball Pavilion in Berwick has been officially re-opened meeting the community's growing demand for modern, accessible and unisex facilities. Council's CEO Glenn Patterson was joined by members of the Casey Softball Association, as well as Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas on Saturday 14 March to unveil the new pavillion, following the demolition of the old venue in 2018 to make way for new and improved facilities. The $2.59 million pavilion is the sole softball venue in Casey and is the headquarters of the Casey Softball Association which has 37
teams across nine clubs, with 390 participants. Mr Patterson welcomed the modern facilities, which replaced the outdated and maleonly friendly infrastructure. "The construction of the new pavilion will increase participation and allow maximum use of this reserve," he said. "It will also increase accessibility and safety for our users, and will allow multi-sport use, regional and representative competitions and training opportunities." The new pavilion now has four unisex change rooms; two unisex referee rooms
with partitions; a multi-purpose community room; public toilets with an accessible toilet and shower; a kitchen; storeroom; undercover spectator area and car parking. Mr Patterson also added what a difference the above additions will make to Casey's growing community and sporting groups. This project was jointly funded by Council and the Victorian Government, with $1.73 million invested through the Growing Suburbs Fund. "We welcome the Victorian Government's funding towards this project and thank them
for their investment in the region, which is one of the fastest growing in Victoria," Mr Patterson said. "We look forward to continuing to grow our partnership with the Victorian Government to build sport and recreational facilities as well as other critical infrastructure. "We are committed to reducing the gap in infrastructure for emerging popular sports, which includes softball and baseball, so our community can be active, healthy and connected, particularly for residents in our growth areas."
Isolated away from the crowds, racing to continue Horse racing will continue throughout the state of Victoria, albeit under strict protocols already in place across the industry. In a Covid-19 statement released earlier this week by Racing Victoria (RV) chief executive Giles Thompson, it was made clear that with the support and cooperation of industry stakeholders, RV has implemented strict protocols that have allowed for racing to continue. "Throughout this period we have maintained two clear objectives: to protect the health and wellbeing of industry staff, participants and indeed the wider community; and to provide a framework that allowed for the safe continuation of Victorian racing for the 25,000 people whose livelihoods depend on it, and for our horses which require ongoing care and attention," the statement read. "Racing is a non-contact sport where horse handling requires social distancing, and one that has demonstrated previously through the equine influenza outbreak of 2007 that it can successfully implement quarantine measures. "These are unprecedented times and we have rightly taken unprecedented actions over the past fortnight around banning crowds, locking down training centres, introducing compulsory temperature checks for people entering courses, isolating and restricting the movement of jockeys, and abandoning our picnic racing season to ensure that we provide the safest environment possible for the continuation of Victorian racing. "At this time, our fate continues to be in our berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au
hands, but apathy will quickly bring racing to a halt in this state. As an industry we must continue to work together and support one another as we navigate these challenging times to the best of our ability." In a further update released on Tuesday, the RV board added that, effective from 6pm today (Thursday), the following people who arrive in Victoria via interstate travel, regardless of the means of transport, will no longer be permitted access to race meetings, training centres, or any other licensed premises for at least 14 days: All licensed and registered participants, including - but not limited to - trainers, their staff and jockeys; and Any essential staff (race day officials and club staff) or essential personnel (vets or farriers) permitted under the current protocols to attend race meetings and/or training centres throughout Victoria. Any licensed or registered person, essential staff member, or essential personnel who arrives in Victoria after 6pm is required to selfisolate for 14 days and must not return to race meetings, training centres, or any other licenses premises at the completion of that isolation period if they're feeling unwell or are displaying any Covid-19 symptoms. At this stage, the movement of horses to and from Victoria remains permitted, while discussions are ongoing between RV, government, and industry stakeholders around the appropriate protocols to govern that.

DDCA’s best of the best season with 600 home-and-away runs next to his name. Morteza Ali (Narre South) - 438 runs at 33.7, HS: 125, 24 wkts at 15.1, BB: 5/11 The Narre South all-rounder was a deserving winner of the Alan Wookey Medal as champion player of the Turf 1 season, with the exciting Lion proving his worth in the top-flight with some dominant performances that ultimately helped lead the club to an incredible finals appearance after being promoted from Turf 2. Ali belted a memorable 125 against North Dandenong early in the season, while just prior to Christmas, he put Hallam Kalora Park to the sword with 64 and 5/58, while he also snagged 5/11 in a match-winning performance against St Mary’s. David White (Buckley Ridges) - 695 runs at 53.5, HS: 101 It was always going to be a hard act to follow after one of the most dominant individual seasons in 2018/19 in his first season in the association, but the South African star was once again the most prolific Turf 1 batsman of the year, topping the competition in runs and providing his usual fireworks with some of the more entertaining and breathtaking knocks you’ll see. While White wasn’t at his absolute best towards the back-end of the season, the overseas pro led the club brilliantly through a rough patch before the grand final was cancelled, preventing the Bucks from a chance of back-to-back flags. Kaushalya Weeraratne (HSD) - 558 runs at 46.5, HS: 89, three wkts at 28 It was a fascinating season for the Heinz Southern Districts star, who was right up in the association in runs but couldn’t quite break through for the massive score despite showcasing immense consistency in the middle or-
der. Incredibly, Weeraratne made between 30 and 49 eight times throughout the season, and scored two half-centuries after Christmas, and only made one single digit score in the entire campaign. Jerome Jones (Buckley Ridges) - 429 runs at 53.6, HS: 97, 26 wkts at 18.8, BB: 5/45 What a recruit he’s been for Buckley Ridges. The West Indian all-rounder enjoyed an absolutely superb maiden season for the club, becoming a destructive middle-order batsman and outstanding spearhead with the ball, sending them down quickly at Park Oval. Jones often provided some huge individual performances, including a golden 97 against Berwick, and a highly-impressive 5/45 against North Dandenong. Ruwantha Kellepotha (Berwick) - 180 runs at 20, HS: 58*, 26 wkts at 17, BB: 4/8 The star all-rounder joined the Bears with a bit of expectation behind him after an extraordinary 2018/19 season with St Mary’s. While it took a bit of time for the leggie and middleorder batsman to settle in to his new surrounds, as the year wore on his value was evident with a number of excellent displays - particularly with the ball. Kellepotha had a tough start to the year with the bat but made some handy contributions, batting at four later in the season. Troy Aust (Buckley Ridges, wk) - 179 runs at 22.3, HS: 47, 17 catches, six stumpings The Buckley keeper and long-term leader enjoyed another incredibly consistent season and once again proved his skill with the gloves throughout the year and also his capacity to provide handy runs later in the innings for his club. He’s an unbelievably reliable cricketer who seemingly is still playing at an extremely high standard.

James Wilcock (Berwick) - 46 runs at 23, HS: 13*, 31 wkts at 11.7, BB: 5/14 The Turf 1 leading wicket-taker interestingly had a slow start to the season with just four wickets from his first four games, but since then his class went to another level, completely dominating the competition and proving himself to be the premier quick of the DDCA. His patch leading into finals - including 3/3 from eight overs against Hallam and 4/8 against St Mary’s - was frightening. Brendan Rose (Berwick) - 21 runs at 3.5, HS: 7, 24 wkts at 12.8, BB: 5/29 Rose came as a highly-prized recruit to the club from Premier outfit Casey-South Melbourne, and enjoyed a strong first season at the club in 2018/19, but this year, the quick’s class was on display in a scary new-ball combination with Wilcock - providing so much consistency with his lines, something he’s well renowned for. He snared 5/29 in Round 2 to set the scene for his season and seemed to always lift to another level against the top-sides, as shown by his 4/19 against Buckley Ridges in a run-soaked one-day clash. Jarryd Straker (Springvale South) - 20 runs at 5, HS: 7, 29 wkts at 12.1, BB: 4/22 Once again staking a claim as the top spinner of the association, the left-arm tweaker was once again absolutely superb for the Bloods with his consistency, control and ability to wear down an opposition on display. He rarely went an innings without a wicket, and took three or more wickets six times throughout the 2019/20 campaign, including four against Berwick, Buckley Ridges and a quality 3/10 against Narre South. He’s truly a big game player. 12th man: Greg Todd Buckley Ridges All statistics are based on the home-and-away season only. 12418258-LN21-19
It’s been another strong season for some of the star cricketers of the Dandenong District’s toptier, and DDCA reporter Nick Creely has chosen his Turf 1 Team of the Year, based on the home-and-away season. It was an extremely unfortunate end to the Turf 1 season, with the standalone grand final scheduled on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 March cancelled amid the Covid-19 pandemic, with Berwick picking up its first premiership since 2011/12 due to finishing on top of the ladder at the conclusion of the regular rounds. Buckley Ridges - which was shooting for back-to-back flags - finished as runner-up after qualifying for the decider after finishing in fourth position. Here is the team (in batting order): Matthew Chasemore (Berwick, captain) - 617 runs at 61.7, highest score: 134* Now a Berwick premiership captain, the exVictorian Premier Cricket great enjoyed one of his most prolific scoring seasons in a number of years, mostly opening the batting for the Bears. The left-hander made a superb 134 not out against Buckley Ridges and also struck scores of 55 not out, 70 not out, 91 and 98 to be one of the most consistent top-order players in the association once again. He also led the Bears superbly throughout the season, which ultimately ended up in the Turf 1 flag after finishing on top of the table. Ateeq Javid (Springvale South) - 565 runs at 51.4, HS: 110, four wickets at 31.5 The overseas pro joined the Bloods as their skipper and had an immediate impact with scores of 110, 87, 75 not out and 63 all before Christmas to completely take the competition by storm. While his form tailed off slightly after the break, Javid was a driving force in the club’s push towards finals, and almost finished the

Searching for the solution By sports editor Russell Bennett The postponement, or even cancellation of competitions across Australia has thrown the community sporting world into chaos, with players, clubs and leagues wondering where to turn next in the uncertain times surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic. Of course, there are much bigger things at play here than sport - the community's health and safety, first and foremost - but the future is an incredibly uncertain one for business and sporting clubs alike. Terry Dillon from TD Solutions (TDS) Sports Administration has developed a coronavirus club response package, which aims to educate and direct administrators on ways of minimising damage to clubs and their future prospects, and emerging from the crisis ready to re-engage with their core business. Dillon is working in conjunction with the AFL to provide direction, and the next steps to take for the 3500-plus community clubs around the country to best manage what AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan admitted is a once in a 100-year challenge. A guide instructing clubs as to how to best move forward will be released this week. TDS has developed a financial model (covering both pre and post coronavirus) to estimate the effects on both club revenue, and expenditure. The club response package includes a fourpart, 90-minute webinar - starting next Monday, 30 March. Part 1 covers shortfall - teaching leagues and clubs how to estimate their revenue shortfall, using the TDS revenue model. Part 2 covers expenditure, and how to tightly manage the cash flow impact and all discretionary spending. Part 3 covers prevention measures with a strong revenue focus with, importantly, the adoption of a new-age revenue model; and Part 4 covers budgeting - the importance of a
forecasting model and how to lay out a budget in this new era. The 90-minute webinar in the TDS package alerts club administrators to the practical steps they can take to both understand their current situation, and to formulate a plan to emerge with a healthy club once the pandemic has eased. Dillon is one of the most well-known names in community sport - particularly throughout West Gippsland - and is synonymous with his beloved Cora Lynn Football Netball Club. But his knowledge and expertise extends far beyond the bounds of the local community, and this is why sporting clubs all over Australia - even including some of Cora Lynn's famous rivals - have engaged his business' services. "The current situation is a threat to all clubs," he said. "You can either allow it to weaken your club, perhaps beyond repair, or you can work on a plan to emerge from the crisis with a club that is as healthy as possible and ready to play." TDS brings Dillon's lifetime's work - including working for 17 years at AFL clubs including Collingwood (as chief financial officer under president Eddie McGuire), Hawthorn (as chief operating officer under Ian Dicker and Jeff Kennett, and acting chief executive), and St Kilda (as chief operating officer) - to the fore to help those running local sporting clubs. In his book, 'How Ordinary People Create Extraordinary Clubs', Dillon identified that the major challenges for clubs - regardless of the sport - fall into the same five categories: identifying and retaining good leaders, using strong reporting processes, using an effective and relevant revenue model, finding and retaining volunteers, and planning for the future. Without expertise in these key areas, he says that even committees and administrators with the best of intentions will struggle to run their clubs successfully.
"I've always been surprised that to coach a team, in nearly all sports around the country, you need to have gained a minimum education requirement," he said. "Yet, if you want to run the whole club, you need no qualification whatsoever - nothing, zip, zero. "To avoid catastrophe in clubland, there has to be a circuit breaker, something that provides not just hope and encouragement, but
real, practical support and workable solutions for clubs and their volunteer administrators in what is the most difficult landscape ever experienced by our country."
