MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk I really enjoyed Phill Jarratt's 'Life Of Brine' column this week, on page 14. He is in precautionary self-isolation having recently returned from overseas and like many people is reconnecting with what many seem to see as old-fashioned pastimes, like reading a book. This is not to be flippant the message here is as much about the mental health side of coronavirus as the physical, particularly for those in home quarantine. Keeping the mind active and avoiding dwelling on the negativity is actually vital, as easy as that is to say. In a wider sense, there is much that communities across the nation can do to look after each other during this time of public health crisis. Above all else, follow the precautionary health warnings - and be kind to each other. Jeremy Sollars

COUNCIL FACILITIES CLOSED Council-run facilities will close indefinitely from midday today in line with the Federal Government's new requirements to help slow the spread of COVID-19. The closure includes: · Noosa Aquatic Centre (the NAC). · Noosa Leisure Centre · Butter Factory Cooroy · Noosa Regional Gallery · The J · Noosa Library Service (Cooroy, Noosaville and Mobile Libraries) Group and centre-based activities at Noosa Community Support have already ceased. All Noosa Leisure Centre and Noosa Aquatic Centre memberships and visit passes will be suspended

until the facilities re-open. Payments for swimming lessons will also be suspended. While some of the facilities do not meet all of the criteria of the latest advice, Council has decided the closures are in the best interests of the community. Library customers will have the opportunity to make use of a lending pick-up service from midday today. Also closed in Noosa are all licensed parts of bars and hotels, entertainment facilities such as the cinema and nightclubs, indoor sporting venues and gyms will also see indefinite closure from midday today March 23. Grocery stores, shopping centres and bottle shops are also remaining open.Queensland currently has 397 cases of the novel Coronavirus, 24 of which tested positive after an outing at Sails Restaurant in Noosa earlier this month. NOOSA TODAY WILL CONTINUE TO POST UPDATES ON THE DEVELOPING CORONAVIRUS SITUATION visit us on Facebook and at www. noosatoday.com.au ●

Council facilities join the long list of businesses to close under new Federal restrictions.

INFORMATION DELAY: BOLTON Independent Member for Noosa Sandy Bolton updated the community on Wednesday to confirm that four staff from Sails Restaurant returned positive tests for COVID-19. Ms Bolton said in a social media post that herself, Mayor Tony Wellington and the Local Disaster Management Group have all reported "delays in the critical information". "Myself, the Noosa Mayor and the Local Disaster Management Group have reported that delays in online information and/or requested information is unacceptable, and even taking into the exceptional circumstances at present, that we be advised promptly of any positive tests even if there is no risk to residents, so that we can communicate with our community, without breaking any privacy laws," Ms Bolton said. Ms Bolton later shared the following update received from Queensland Health.

Ms Bolton said the delayed response from health officials is “unacceptable.” "Four staff that served patrons at Sails Restaurant in Noosa last week have tested positive for novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and are now being managed by relevant Hospital and Health Services," her statement said. "These staff members worked at the restaurant on Wednesday 18 March from 4pm-11.15pm and

Thursday 19 March 3pm-10pm while unknowingly infectious. "Queensland Health is calling for people who attended the restaurant during those times to monitor their health for 14 days from those dates and see a doctor immediately if they develop any symptoms. "If you need to see a doctor, call ahead and advise of your symptoms

and exposure so staff can prepare for your visit. "While the risk is very low, some patrons could potentially have been exposed. There is no risk to anyone who has been to this restaurant before or after this period. "Sails Restaurant has been closed since 23 March 2020. "Anyone with questions or concerns can contact 13 HEALTH." This follows alleged reports of 24 party goers testing positive for COVID-19 after the same interaction at the Noosa restaurant. Cr Tony Wellington said in his latest briefing as Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group that there is low risk to the community. "Only four of those live on the Sunshine Coast, the rest have dispersed elsewhere into southeast Queenland," he said. "Health authorities are tracing all those participants, and they say there is a low risk to the community generally to that event."

Friday March 27. Pre-polling booths have already seen a huge amount of voters through the doors, with an estimate of well over 50 per cent of Queenslanders making the early trip to their local polling booth, or making a postal vote, due to the threat of overcrowding on Election Day. More than 12,000 Noosa residents had already visited polling stations to make an early vote by close of business on Tuesday of this week. With a higher than normal number of postal votes due to coronavirus, it is anticipated that the election results may take longer than normally expected to be finalised. Mayoral candidate and serving Noosa mayor Tony Wellington said that with the high volume of postal votes, results could be delayed until as late as Easter. "The election count is a timeconsuming process," he said. "It concludes with the 'declaration of the poll' by the Returning Officer who has 10 business days from

Election Day to finalise the results and declare. "There are two declarations, one for mayor and another for the councillors. "Given the number of postal votes, the declaration of the poll probably won't occur until around Easter. "If they count the mayoral elections first on Saturday night, we should know who is likely to win that race on the night, though it won't be officially declared - this is what has happened previously. "The current councillors continue in their roles until the new council is sworn in. "This happens as soon as possible after the declaration of the poll. "Given the situation with the pandemic, the swearing-in ceremony may be held without the usual gathering of friends and family, but instead live-streamed from the council chambers." Mayoral candidate Clare Stewart says she'll be out in the community on Election Day to help with any last minute questions. "On Election Day, I'll be out and

about, continuing to meet and greet people at the polling booths and answering any questions they may have, in accordance with the ECQ guidelines, of course," Clare said. "Come Saturday night, I'll be spending time with my family and keeping an ear to the ground as to what's unfolding. "It won't be a big gathering, just relaxed family time. "Should I be elected, there'll be little time for celebration. "The reality is if I become Mayor, the job starts at midnight on March 28, and I'll be more than ready to get to work on behalf of the people of Noosa."

VOTING ARRANGEMENTS The Electoral Commission of Queensland has issued the following directions about the conduct of voting due to COVID-19: ¡ Where available, hand sanitiser will be provided for voters and polling officials at early voting centres and polling booths noosatoday.com.au

Clare Stewart · Additional cleaning of polling booth areas will be undertaken to ensure that hard surfaces are regularly disinfected · All people in polling booths should follow social distancing guidelines including maintaining distances of 1.5 metres where possible and avoiding handshakes · Voters are encouraged to bring their own pen or pencil with them to vote, although pencils will still be available to all voters. Candidates will appoint their own scrutineers to observe the count at polling stations and those scrutineers can challenge individual ballot papers if there are questions over the formality of individual votes. The local returning officer - who oversees the election - appointed

Tony Wellington by the Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) has the final say on the formality of individual ballot papers.

With so much negativity in these unprecedented times, it is essential to the well-being of the community that people show acts of kindness and generosity. Local bride to be Kim Gillespie experienced first hand the generosity of our community when she informed her florist that her wedding has to be postponed. Noosa House of Flowers owner Chris kindly gifted Kim a stunning bouquet of flowers upon hearing the news. "At a time when so many businesses are going through difficult times, this was a beautiful act of kindness and really brightened my afternoon," Kim said."When

FEDERAL ASSISTANCE... THE PM'S STATEMENT IN BRIEF... The Commonwealth Government this week released the second stage of its economic plan to cushion the economic impact of the coronavirus and help build a bridge to recovery. A total of $189 billion is being injected into the economy by all arms of Government in order to keep Australians in work and businesses in business. This includes $17.6 billion for the Government's first economic stimulus package, $90 billion from the RBA and $15 billion from the Government to deliver easier access to finance, and $66.1 billion in today's economic support package. Our economic support package includes: · Support for households including casuals, sole-traders, retirees and those on income support · Assistance for businesses to keep people in a job · Regulatory protection and financial support for businesses

to stay in business The Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the Government was acting to cushion the blow from the coronavirus for businesses and households to help them get through to the other side of the crisis. "We want to help businesses keep going as best they can and for as long as they can, or to pause instead of winding up their business. We want to ensure that when this crisis has passed Australian businesses can bounce back," the Prime Minister said. "Our focus is on cushioning the blow and providing hope to every Australian that we will get through this and come out the other side together. "We know this will be temporary. That's why all our actions are geared towards building a bridge, keeping more people in work, enhancing the safety net for those that aren't and keeping businesses alive so they can get to the other side and stand up their workforce as quickly as possible.

"We know Australia's more than 3 million small and medium businesses are the engine room of our economy. When they hurt, we all hurt. "The next few months are going to be a difficult journey but we all

have a role to play to adapt to the changes we're facing, to cushion the impact of what is happening and to pull together so we can bounce back when we get to the other side." The Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said the $189 billion economic support package was the equivalent of 9.7 per cent of GDP. "The Government is taking unprecedented action to strengthen the safety net available to Australians that are stood down or lose their jobs and increasing support for small businesses that do it tough over the next six months. "These measures build significantly on what we have already announced. "These extraordinary times demand extraordinary measures." The first payment will be made from 31 March 2020 to people who will have been on one of the eligible payments any time between 12 March 2020 and 13 April 2020. MORE INFO AT - www.business. gov.au ●

GENEROSITY IN TOUGH TIMES Sunshine Butterflies Disability Support Charity were the lucky receivers of an incredible plant donation from Sunshine Coast Council last week. Sunshine Coast Council attended Sunshine Butterflies to deliver native trees and shrubs to their Cooroibah based property 'Our Backyard' for Sunshine Butterflies members, volunteers and staff to plant. Sunshine Butterflies received native trees and plants that were provided in response to the recent devastating bushfires across Australia. These species were specifically chosen as a food source for local native bees, birds and fauna. It was a wonderful morning for all Involved as these two organisations joined forces to bring some spectacular things to life. "By the council providing these native plants it helps to stimulate growth and beautify the grounds at Sunshine Butterflies, which in turns helps us to create a great atmosphere for people with disabilities to enjoy." Damien Walsh, Sunshine Gardens Manager said. It was rewarding for Sunshine

Council donated native trees and plants used to sustain bees and birds. Coast Council and Sunshine Butterflies to participate in what was both an educational and social experience. Sunshine Butterflies 5-acre oasis 'Our Backyard' set in the Noosa country, is home to many trees, plants and greenery. While also being home to many of their animals that regularly roam the area, with the likes of guinea fowl, ducks and

"Our members are always learning about native plants, the environment and animals in many of our programs, so bringing in more native plants and increasing our wildlife and growth is so important to us," Damien said. â—?

TO BRIGHTEN YOUR DAY... Have you noticed the large increase in butterflies recently? From Monarchs, Cabbage and Blue Tiger butterflies, these little guys are a very common sight across the region lately.CSIRO retiree Dr Ted Edwards told the ABC that these "highly migratory" butterflies are heading South. "They do this every year, but it's unusual this year," Dr Edwards said."There's been such a long, dry period and then a lot of rain and that's caused the food that the caterpillars feed on to shoot up beautifully. "The parasites that usually keep them under control have been left behind, so you get this great flood of butterflies." These fluttery insects won't hang around for long though, so enjoy their beautiful presence while they are still here. ●

LETTERS

Post your letters to: 36 Mary St, Noosaville, 4566 or email: newsdesk@noosatoday.com.au

STEADY THE SHIP 2020 is going to be a very uncertain year. With our council elections we can either choose a mayor that has kept the promise of a clean green Noosa, or a person that has had no council experience whatsoever, to steer us through these troubled waters. We also have three dedicated experienced councillors who have served our community well, and who will steady the ship in the months ahead. Look carefully at the other candidates to make up your six, and support those who have a positive attitude to the current council. The mayor, Frank Wilkie, Brian Stockwell and Joe Jurisevic all support the Noosa Plan, which is designed to keep Noosa from becoming like its southern neighbours, while enhancing opportunities in our shire. Please choose carefully, and let experience be your guide for a safe secure future. Joy Ringrose, Pomona.

THANKS TO STAFF Lately I have seen many letters complaining about supermarkets and feel this is so wrong.

LENSCAPE

So I would like to send a massive thank you to all our retail workers, especially our supermarket workers. If you do anything this week

please be kind to the retail staff. They have put themselves at risk so you can do your shopping. Thank you to all our supermar-

kets. They have been in overload with work during the Covid-19 crisis and had to cope with the mad lunatic panic greedy buyers suffering abuse.

NEWS I certainly appreciate them. We should all tell them we appreciate them - as well as our doctors and nurses. I want you to know that we admire and look up to you. You are awesome and you seriously hold the greatest titles on earth. You are unsung heroes in a very important job especially now. Thank you for everything you do. Chris and Marie-Louise Sarjeant, Peregian Springs.

QUESTION OF SILENCE I have put a number of questions to the Noosa Council candidates on their respective Facebook pages. Some of the questions I put to Amelia Lorentson have been deleted. The one response I received from her failed to answer the questions I asked of her. My second question to Future Noosa never received a response and I heard from another ratepayer that his questions to Future Noosa have been deleted and he has been blocked from the group’s Facebook page. Clare Stewart has also not been the bastion of transparency on Facebook either. My email and several tweets to her received no response. This is the limit of my averse experience with candidates but I’m not saying they are the only transgressors.

The above five individuals appear to have taken lessons from Trump on stifling legitimate questions and commentary as ‘fake news’’. We need to be careful of who we vote for; we will be stuck with them for four years and the damage may be much longer term. Michelle Hayes, Noosaville.

MIND THE COUNTRY To our leaders, for God’s sake - get a grip! This is a virus, not a plague. You are going to destroy the lives of thousands of people - because they might get a flu-like virus? This is not a plague that kills everyone who catches it. It is a virus, like many before it. By closing down the country you will cause thousands to lose their jobs permanently, others to go bankrupt, to lose their homes. Some will even contemplate suicide. In addition, there will be increased domestic violence, assault, theft and burglary. In times like this we need strong leaders who are not afraid to let common-sense prevail, not followers who copy each other. Keep the borders closed for a few weeks if you must, but don’t take away people’s livelihoods. Don’t destroy Australia. Rita Chapman.

JACK MANGROVE

A CHANGE FOR THE BETTER

Warren Painter with a nice snapper.

KIDS PLAY NOOSA FOR FREE SUNDAY AFTERNOONS.

The winds of change come through on the coast with the weekend giving way to the best weather we have seen this month. Everyone who had a boat was on it with serious numbers of anglers heading far and wide. Offshore didn’t disappoint with North reef, Chardon’s and Sunshine all reporting a great mixed bag of fish including snapper, cobia, sweetlip, tuskies, estuary cod, longtail tuna and coral trout on Sunshine reef. These species will take a variety of methods but a pilchard floater is best for tuna, cobia and bigger snapper. Live baits allowed to free swim will get taken by tuna, cobia and mackerel and baits fished on a paternoster rig will get your lipper, pearlies and smaller snapper. Live baits fished hard on the bottom are best for bigger trout and cod. With the building current be sure to use big ball sinkers in size 8-10 and some 7/0 octopus hooks if snelling baits. In closer along the shallow 15-20m line toward DI from Halls the Spanish mackerel continue to patrol this line. With the bigger tides early morning this is a great place to slow troll baits or drift along while working plastics with a live bait out under a balloon or free swimming. The Noosa River has seen the water warm and start to become clearer. This has seen a continued run of quality sized flatties and jacks. The jacks will become increasingly active during the darker light times so if night fishing is your thing, be sure to head out. For jacks

you can use diving lures worked away from structure like rock piles or along rock bars. For soft plastic anglers a bigger paddle tail plastic in bloodworm colour are a great performer especially when rigged weedless so you don’t get snagged. If using live baits be sure to keep water in buckets aerated and fresh. This keeps your bait alive and kicking for best results. Other fish on the catch list include whiting and bream which are also showing up on the inshore gutters around the mouth. Once this swell drops the surf fishing will see a big improvement with big dart and tailor starting to show up. Try your luck around the river mouth rocks for bream and whiting while the seas are still rough. With the water levels high in the freshwater the bass are moving into the shallower bays and weedy points looking for warmer water and a feed. This is a great time to break out weedless rigged grub style plastics and smaller spinner baits. Work these along the weed edges for best results. If using baits then try suspending one under a float and work the bait close to the drop offs as this is an exciting way to fish. Be sure to wash trailers down if fishing Lake MacDonald so the spread of noxious weed is reduced. This is really flourishing after the recent rains so keep an eye out before you leave. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●

In consultation with its facilities operators, Sunshine Coast Council has announced all of its aquatic centres are now closed. The decision was made late evening Tuesday 24 March), with all aquatic centres closing their doors at 7pm and advising patrons on social media. Sunshine Coast Council mayor and chair of the Local Disaster Management Group Mark Jamieson said council and the aquatic centre operators made this difficult decision in line with our collective community responsibility and commitment to the health and wellbeing of facility patrons.

“Council and the aquatic centre operators acknowledge the need to take every precautionary measure available to all of us to combat the spread of Covid-19,” Cr Jamieson said. The following aquatic centres are closed until further notice: Beerwah, Buderim, Caloundra, CoolumPeregian, Cotton Tree, Eumundi, Kawana, Nambour and Palmwoods. Caloundra Aquatic and Lifestyle Centre and Eumundi Aquatic Centre gym facilities are also closed until further notice. TRYING TIMES FOR SPORT BOXING You don’t have to be a champion athlete to understand that the major factors in sporting success are teamwork and mateship. Regardless of whether you are in a remote country area or a big city, these attitudes are a must. Now with sporting events cancelled, gyms closed and fundraising get-togethers, also on stop, it is noticeable that these, are now quietly starting to click in. With the news that his Cooroy Impact Boxing Academy would have to close until further notice, owner and head coach Mark Evans immediately offered support to those who wished to continue their exercising in some shape or form. “All in we now have something like 100 plus members: members of the boxing squad, lady’s fitness and family support groups. Because of this we decided to make a gesture of equipment loans where possible; this will not only help to maintain their fitness but also and most important, a good mental attitude. We consider this could be vital, as some of our members may be living in isolation.” Also let us not forget that once this is over the Impact team will have a new gym to celebrate.

KARATE Back from South Africa where he spent two weeks conducting a total of six training seminars, Chief Instructor of Noosa’s Sunshine Coast Martial Arts Club Bryan Dukas 6th Dan (Shotokan Karate) said the seminars were very well supported, with an average of 100 students enrolled for each session. “However, our last seminar was cancelled as a result of the virus. On arriving home, I found the dojo closed and now my family and I are in isolation; now my wife and I are working from home. To maintain a positive attitude, we have set up

on line training. “Unfortunately, the visit from a highly regarded instructor from Japan is cancelled. However, if we can overcome the virus and we are confident that we can, December visit from Sensei Mike Dukas 8th Dan from South Africa, will give our club something to look forward too.” Something positive to remember.

SURF RESCUE When thinking about our essential service people in a time such as this, don’t forget those who work our beaches our lifesavers and lifeguards. Directives have been circulated this week to all surf clubs. To keep

They are also trained to coordinate with helicopter rescue regarding search patterns day or night and also med evac. Regarding our weekend beach patrols Noosa Club Captain Roger Aspinall said: “Our patrols will proceed as normal with full updates being available to our patrol captains. They will at all times be fully informed.” This information also applies to the Sunshine Beach Club. ●

members updated as new info comes to light, Surf Life Saving Queensland has created an online hub. This will be updated on a regular basis with new information for members and general public, soon as it comes to hand. Those lifesavers who are members of our ERG (Emergency Response Group) have received the necessary letter to confirm their availability for the times ahead: also look at their levels of response and increase their ready-ness. For those who are not fully aware of who they are, the ERG teams are those who are on a 24 hour call out regardless of time or

NOOSA TODAY 13

LIFE OF BRINE

PHIL JARRATT

Bondi before and after the closure.

COMFORT IN TIME OF CHANGE During my self-isolation this past week or so, I’ve been seeking solace through music and literature, the former through the good offices of Spotify and the artistry of Little Feat, Texas Tornadoes and Tedeschi Trucks Band, the latter through trolling the Net for words of wisdom from those who had lived through similar crises. This led me to the splendidly rascally Samuel Pepys, the eminent diarist who drank and whored his way through London’s Great Plague of 1665, which claimed nearly 100,000, or 20 percent of the population, over less than a year. There was virtually no chance of surviving a diagnosis, but Pepys apparently had some degree of immunity due to the fact, according to his excellent biographer Claire Tomalin (The Unequalled Self, 2002), that fleas found him distasteful. At the height of the summer, Pepys, a middle level civil servant of considerable wealth, dispatched his long-suffering wife and her servants to the country estate, while he continued to keep stiff his upper lip and other vital organs while prowling the taverns each night. But even such a glass-half-full kind of guy had his down moments. “Lord, how sad a sight to see the streets so empty of people,” he wrote on 16 August. But the dejection was brief, as modern-day diarist Gavin Mortimer noted in The Spectator. “The next day Pepys went boating on the Thames with four friends, dropping anchor near Gravesend, ‘to supper mighty merry’.” Moving forward a few centuries to the Jazz Age and the Spanish Flu pandemic, I found these comforting words attributed to the great F Scott Fitzgerald, apparently written while he was quarantined in France in 1920: 14 NOOSA TODAY

I’m going to say here is not even political, because in a time of crisis we need partisanship, we need to pull together as a community. We don’t need inexperienced leadership that seems to call into question the basic tenets of environmental and lifestyle protection that have existed in our shire since the end of the Wansley (RIP) regime, and have been reinforced manyfold in the lifetime of the current council. And while you and I may disagree with much of the small stuff, I know who I want leading our community through these trying times, and it’s not a newbie with a develop-or-perish mindset.

F Scott Fitzgerald. “Outside, I perceive what may be a collection of fallen leaves tussling against a trash can. It rings like jazz to my ears. The streets are that empty. It seems as though the bulk of the city has retreated to their quarters, rightfully so. At this time, it seems very poignant to avoid all public spaces. Even the bars, as I told Hemingway, but to that he punched me in the stomach, to which I asked if he had washed his hands. He hadn’t. He is much the denier, that one. Why, he considers the virus to be just influenza. I’m curious of his sources. “The officials have alerted us to ensure we have a month’s worth of necessities. Zelda and I have stocked up on red wine, whiskey, rum, vermouth, absinthe, white wine, sherry, gin, and lord, if we need it, brandy. Please pray for us. “In the distance, from my brooding perch, the shoreline is cloaked in a dull haze where I can discern an unremitting penance that has been heading this way for a long, long while. And yet, amongst the cracked cloudline of an evening’s cast, I focus on a single strain of light, calling me forth to believe in a better morrow.” An American media friend sent me this in a group email, purporting to be a letter Fitzgerald wrote to a friend. It went viral (if we can still say that) so you may have received

TO SURF OR NOT TO SURF Pepys appropriately on a cigarette card. it too. But sadly, a little research revealed that the great Scottie did not write it. It was a clever parody by humourist Nick Farriella that appeared on the McSweeney’s website a couple of weeks ago, just before humour went out the window. But we can’t stop having a giggle, can we? No matter how tough things get. In the words of Brother Buffett, another of the greats: “If we couldn’t laugh, we would all go insane.”

WE NEED A PROVEN LEADER Since I discovered how many of my fellow Noosans actually believe that Trump is sane, I’ve refrained from pressing my political views in this space, however, long-time readers (both of you) will probably know where my allegiances are in Saturday’s election. But what

Although the guidelines are somewhat contradictory, it seems the intent of self-isolation is that you stay away from public spaces, including the beach. Until lockdown is imposed, however, the rest of the community can theoretically still go to the beach and swim or surf, as long as you observe the protocols of social distancing and there are fewer than 500 people in your midst. In Sydney last weekend Bondi Beach was closed on Saturday and Bondi to Maroubra on Sunday because the media was full of images of a big crowd on the beach at Bondi on Friday. Pretty arbitrary. Where will be the next shutdown? Main Beach Noosa over Easter? A lot of thinking people are observing voluntary lockdown with their families, which is to be applauded and respected, but the sad truth of the matter is that if Noosa’s beaches are no-go zones over the Easter holidays, our tourism economy will be getting its last rites. ● noosatoday.com.au
