MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk Our region this week recorded its first cases of coronavirus, including popular Warwick butcher Peter Wright. This kind of local impact was inevitable - what matters now is how we respond collectively. Peter and co-owner of Rose City Premium Meats Paul Carey and their team of staff, which I am proud to say includes two of my sons, had been working huge days over the past several weeks in response to increased customer demand. They are now part of the local human face of this public health challenge - but like the rest of this community they will rise to that challenge. Now more than ever - even more so than when confronted with drought and bushfires - we must remember that our communities large and small are ones in which people care for one another, in practical ways and with moral support. We are renowned for that and rightfully proud of it. Follow the precautionary health advice - particularly on personal hygiene - don't deal in rumours and be kind to each other, and as a community we will kick some serious COVID-19 butt. Jeremy Sollars

LOCAL COVID-19 UPDATES... BY JEREMY SOLLARS Warwick this week recorded its first confirmed case of coronavirus with a coowner of Rose City Premium Meats in Rose City Shoppingworld having tested positive for the virus last Sunday 22 March. The business was pro-active in advising customers and will not trade until further notice as a precautionary measure, with all staff advised to commence self-isolation. Co-owner Peter Wright told the Free Times he attended a function out of town the previous weekend where he caught the virus and did not exhibit any symptoms until Friday 20 March, having then had himself tested as a matter of urgency. His own symptoms have been moderate and have mainly involved fatigue and headcold type symptoms. Peter has asked customers and the community for their understanding during a difficult time for himself and the business and thanked the local community for their strong customer support in recent weeks, as well as his staff for their hard work during a period of increased demand. Current medical advice is that there is no risk of transmission of the virus via meat and other food products. Useful information can be found at www.foodstandards.gov.au As at time of printing of the Free Times this week Rose City Shoppingworld remained open and all other businesses were trading as normal. Rose City Premium Meats issued the following statement on Monday of this week "In the interest of public safety and the health and wellbeing of our valued customers, Rose City Premium Meats is advising a member of the RCPM team has returned a positive COVID19 test result," the statement said. "By following the advice of Queensland Health, the RCPM Rose City Shoppingworld store will be closed as of Monday, March 23, until further notice. "To comply with Queensland Health guidelines, all RCPM staff are currently in home isolation for the required period. "We would like to reassure our customers we have been swift and immediate in our action. "Advice from Queensland Health is that there is no transmission risk from food items purchased from the RCPM store. "In relation to customer risk, we are waiting on the latest advice from
Hand hygiene is still the prime line of defence. The Southern Downs Regional Council has created a COVID-19 portal, located on the front page of www.sdrc.qld.gov.au, which provides a variety of useful links for residents. Queensland Health - we will make this available as soon as it becomes available. "RCPM management thank you for your understanding at this time."
MORE CASES Also at time of printing of the Free Times this week there were two other confirmed local cases of coronavirus in northern New South Wales close to the border near Killarney but the situation is changing daily. The Free Times will continue to post updates on the developing COVID-19 situation online at www.freetimes.com.au and on Facebook.
QLD HEALTH ADVICE ... Queensland Health says "contact tracing" is underway for the all new cases of coronavirus in the Darling Downs Health region, which is based on Toowoomba. "Queensland Health will notify the community if any other public health alerts are required," a spokesperson said. "The majority of cases are from patients who have travelled overseas, or have had direct contact with a confirmed case who had travelled overseas. "The number of confirmed cases we see
each day is expected to vary as we continue to respond to the COVID-19 situation across the state. "We want everyone to know they can play their part to protect themselves and the more vulnerable in our community. "Please follow the recommended advice from us and our federal counterparts in regards to social distancing, public gatherings and general wellbeing. "Critically, make sure you are practicing good hygiene and staying home if you're sick. "Washing your hands properly and often is the gold standard of health advice that can help prevent viruses from entering your body. "Queensland Health is urging anyone who has been overseas in the last 14 days and has a fever or any respiratory symptoms to see a doctor immediately. "Please call ahead to the GP surgery and let them know your symptoms and travel history, this will help them prepare for your arrival." More information is available on the Queensland Health website at www.health.

KEEP A DISTANCE Queensland Police this week said the Queensland community "is being reminded to adhere to social distancing principles and new restrictions in relation to indoor venues". "The Queensland Police Service (QPS) is providing ongoing support to Queensland Health as part of a co-ordinated whole of government response to the COVID-19 situation," a QPS spokesperson said. "A multi-agency taskforce operating under Task Force Sierra Linnet will ensure compliance with the new Chief Health Officer directions now in place for all pubs, registered and licensed clubs, gyms and indoor sporting venues. "These measures are aimed at reducing the spread of COVID-19 and ensuring overall public health and safety. "Police have certain powers under the Public Health Act 2005 (Qld) to ensure compliance with the intent of the legislation, and penalty provisions apply." ¡ MORE COVID-19 INFORMATION ON PAGES 7, 11, 12, 17, 18.

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN
A
t time of printing of this week's Free Times - and in the current coronavirus climate things can change - the Southern Downs Regional Council election this Saturday 28 March was still going ahead, along with all other council elections across Queensland. Pre-poll or early voting opened on Monday 16 March and as of the start of this week around 50 per cent of votes had already been cast early in the Southern Downs council area, up on usual numbers due to coronavirus. Pre-poll voting stations at the Warwick Town Hall and the Stanthorpe Anglican Church Hall on Corundum Street have been operating extended hours including voting being open last Saturday 21 March. Those locations will be open today, Thursday 26 March from 9am to 9pm, and
tomorrow, Friday 27 March from 9am to 6pm. On Saturday polling stations will be open from 8am to 6pm - see list of locations. The Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) has issued the following directions about the conduct of voting, both pre-poll and on Saturday, as a result of COVID-19 · Where available, hand sanitiser will be provided for voters and polling officials at early voting centres and polling booths · Additional cleaning of polling booth areas will be undertaken to ensure that hard surfaces are regularly disinfected · All people in polling booths should follow social distancing guidelines including maintaining distances of 1.5 metres where possible and avoiding handshakes · Voters are encouraged to bring their own pen or pencil with them to vote, although pencils will still be available to all voters Counting of votes will commence from
the close of polling on Saturday at 6pm - the Free Times will post online updates on the count from Saturday night. Counting will continue into next week, including counting of postal votes, with the final election results expected to be officially declared on Tuesday 7 April. The elected mayor and eight councillors will formally assume office following the final declaration of the election on Tuesday 7 April. The current council continues to operate in 'caretaker mode' until that time. The first meeting of the new council is scheduled for Wednesday 29 April. It is possible a clear result for both mayor and the eight councillors will be available this Saturday night or on Sunday - but the nature of politics means this is not a certainty. Postal votes begin arriving early next week. Candidates will appoint their own scrutineers to observe the count at polling stations and those scrutineers can challenge

CHANGES TO RESTRICTIONS The Southern Downs Regional Council last week said it had "consulted with Queensland Health and the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy on the region's water needs, and on changing water restrictions from 100L per person per day to 120L per person per day", effective from last Thursday 19 March. In a statement the council said the change "recognises that, in spite of rainfall
across the region, Storm King Dam remains very low, however the situation with supply for Warwick in Leslie Dam has substantially improved". "It is also to give residents confidence that they have access to sufficient quantities of water to protect themselves against COVID-19 through good hygiene practices," the statement said. ●

He said while the Goondiwindi Regional Council would not have a formal say on the Acciona wind farm proposal he expected the council would be consulted over issues potentially impacting "roads and any other council infrastructure". Mr Springborg said local councils had little "practical say" on wind farms and the Queensland Government would be the "principal decision-maker". ●

"The project will generate significant economic activity across the Goondiwindi, Southern Downs and Toowoomba Regional Council Areas. "Acciona will submit a development application seeking a development permit for a Material Change of Use (MCU) to allow construction and operation of the Wind Farm to the State Assessment and Referral Agency (SARA) in 2020." An Acciona company spokeswoman told the Free Times the company plans to hold a series of "public meetings" about the project in "mid-April" but could not provide further details at this time. The spokeswoman said Acciona

A proposal for a wind farm covering 40,000 hectares just west of the Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) boundary will be assessed by the Queensland Government with no formal referral to the SDRC or the neighbouring Goondiwindi Regional Council. Renewable energy company Acciona is understood to have formalised leases with nearly a dozen landowners on predominantly traprock grazing country in the Cement Mills district in the Goondiwindi Regional Council region, with a portion of the land earmarked for the wind farm extending into the SDRC area in the Goldfields district. To the north the land is bounded by what is defined as a 'protected area' including the Durikai State Forest south of Greymare and Karara. Acciona proposed to construct up to 120 wind turbines with a maximum 'wing tip' height of 285 metres, with the "anticipated" construction phase commencing in "late 2020" and taking up to two years. Under Queensland Government planning rules wind farms are currently assessed by the State Assessment and Referral Agency (SARA) and no longer require council approval, although Acciona
has said it will "consult" with the two affected councils. Acciona says if approved by SARA the 'Macintyre Wind Farm' would have an "expected operating life" of 30-plus years. In a fact sheet on its website Acciona says the "Macintyre Wind Farm is proposed to be located within 40,000 hectares of leased land approximately 200 kms southwest of Brisbane and 50 kms south-west of Warwick". "The wind farm will be constructed on land predominately used for sheep farming," the company states. "The site is exposed to consistent winds across this part of the country and provides a suitable resource for the development of a wind farm. "The 540 MW project is anticipated to contain up to 120 wind turbines generators (WTG) with ancillary infrastructure, including an on-site substation, an overhead transmission line and the potential for energy storage. "A new 64 km high voltage overhead transmission line will be built which is required to connect to the Powerlink network near Millmerran. "The project is expected to require a construction workforce of up to 350 people, and an operational workforce of up to 12 personnel.

WIND FARM CONSTRUCTION · Building Access Roads: Each wind farm site starts with building access roads for the transportation of equipment and the connection routes between the turbines. Following construction, the access roads are used for ongoing maintenance activities · Preparing Foundations: Concrete foundations are built to safely secure the wind turbines. Foundations consist of concrete, reinforced steel and bolts. Each foundation will be approximately 20 metres in diameter and approximately 3 metres in depth · Assembling the Towers: Wind Turbines are composed of a tower, a 3-blade rotor and a nacelle (which houses the gears, generators and electrical conversion equipment). Once the foundation is built, the towers will be erected in sections by a large crane and bolted into position. The nacelle is then lifted and fixed to the tower. The hub and blades are then individually attached

My Priorities for Our Region
Plan will pull us together as a community.
WATER SECURITY
GROWING TOURISM Tourism is in my veins and something I am passionate about. Tourism is a pillar of our economy, with every dollar spent by a visitor helping EVERY business in turn.
CONTINUE with water conservation measures. JOIN the South-East QLD & Northern NSW water grid. CONTINUE TO LOBBY the Governments for a commitment to fund this type of infrastructure and dams. Recycled water for parks & gardens, sporting fields and industrial users has been expanded, and I will push to further this. INFRASTRUCTURE - Water & Waste Water I am proud to say that a lot of work has been done in this space and I will continue to lobby for the upgrade of all levels of infrastructure across our Region. A UNITED REGION WITH HAPPY RESIDENTS I am hopeful that the bridges can be mended. We are a diverse people, and I believe that the Granite Belt Strategic
A new suite of regional entry signs have been finalised and I look forward to bringing this project to fruition. Following extensive consultation we are ready to roll out a new “welcome mat” on the national highways, as visitors drive into the Southern Downs and Granite Belt. PARTNERSHIPS WITH PRIVATE BUSINESS AND COUNCIL Council isn’t always in a position to afford large projects. Partnerships are a way to go forward.

WASTE MANAGEMENT and RECYCLING Something not being done well at present. Education is one aspect. Ensuring that this applies to EVERY business and household in the region. Banning excessive packaging. Waste to Power is a project we could partner with. HIGHWAY ACCESS THROUGH CUNNINGHAMS GAP The ongoing road closures at Cunninghams Gap are disruptive to our economy. Although acts of nature are out of our control, a future-facing vision of uninterrupted access to Southern Downs could be possible by lobbying State and Federal Government for a permanent solution. I propose that one such solution could be in the form of a vehicle tunnel built through the mountain range. The tunnel could potentially include a pipeline and a rail link. And finally, to have the guts to make the right decisions for the people I represent. Phone 0417 620 648

NAPLAN TESTING CALLED OFF... State Education Minister Grace Grace this week announced that given the impact of COVID-19 on schools, NAPLAN testing will not proceed in 2020. "The NAPLAN test window was scheduled to be held from 12 to 22 May," she said. "The valuable time of our school leaders, teachers and support staff should be spent either providing continuity of learning for our students or preparing to deliver possible curriculum at home. "I want to thank my state and federal colleagues for listening to Queensland's call to move swiftly to cancel NAPLAN this year, allowing our hardworking teachers to continue providing a world-class education to our students during this unprecedented time."
EXTRA CLEANING... While the possibility of school closures remained at time of printing of the Free Times this week - with the option of bringing the Easter holidays forward - the Palaszczuk Government last week said it would increase the amount of cleaning in Queensland state schools in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. Education Minister Grace Grace said schools would now be provided with additional resources to enable progressive cleaning across the course of the day. "In line with advice from all of Australia's Chief Health Officers, schools across the nation remain open," Ms Grace said.
NAPLAN has been cancelled for 2020 - students subsequently rejoice... "But the role our hard-working cleaning staff play in helping to manage this public health issue is vital. "The health, wellbeing and safety of our staff and students is our highest priority throughout this crisis." Ms Grace said late today the Department of Education ordered for extended and additional cleaning to commence in all schools.
"We are taking immediate action because there is nothing more important than keeping our students and staff safe," she said. "This additional cleaning will focus on the high touch points in schools and will happen throughout the day to ensure the risks of transmission are reduced. "Schools should pay extra attention to health and hygiene measures including
increasing the frequency of the cleaning of toilet facilities and providing additional soap and sanitiser." Ms Grace said soap and sanitiser products are essential for the maintenance of good staff and student hygiene. "We will continue to work with suppliers to ensure schools have access to adequate cleaning and hygiene supplies such as soap, sanitizer, disinfectant," the minister said. "I sincerely thank all of our principals, teachers and staff for your attention to health and hygiene standards in our schools. "But I particularly want to thank our cleaners for their dedication and commitment to the wellbeing of our students." Schools are being asked to follow the below protocols when cleaning · use disposable microfibre cleaning cloths or, wash or change micro-fibre cloths daily and avoid re-using cloths across multiple surfaces · use a general cleaner and follow with a disinfectant such as Q-sol, Peersol or S-Clean for precautionary cleans · pay extra attention to high touch point surfaces such as door handles, light switches, desks, toilets, taps and sinks and use bleach/disinfectant solutions where appropriate for heightened cleanliness · allow rooms to be exposed to sunlight and be well-ventilated. ●

Given the concerning state of our world community members have a lot to consider when casting your vote in this 2020 Queensland Local Government election.
I have 16 years’ experience in Local Government and if re-elected my focus will be to continue to deal with Drought, Water Security, Bushfire and Emergency Management, while providing the best possible service to the community.
Given the series of challenges that Southern Downs
I have always and will continue to be a strong supporter of ideas and actions that better prepare for the sustainability of our region into the future.

As a candidate I can offer you loyalty, dedication, honesty, experience as a Councillor and a willing ear to listen to your needs and concerns. Aside from all on offer as far as what the many capable candidates feel they wish to deliver, you have to decide on people you feel you can trust, respect, are worthy of you faith and willing to take your messages to the SDRC table for action and the best possible outcome.
Region has faced over the last 12 months from droughts, floods, bushfires and now COVID19, the Southern Downs needs a strong leadership team

If you don’t already know me, or my policies, please go and visit my website www.vic4mayor.com.au or follow me on facebook at @vic4mayor I have visions to create a better community where you can TRUST your leaders again, where you have leaders that LISTEN and not talk, and a council that CARES. One that is run by the elected officials in your best interests and is an employer of choice. But since COVID-19 is the topic we can’t all get away from let me say this: We will defeat this, BUT ONLY IF we work to a national plan. Council must not make decisions, on a crisis of this level, that go against the advice of the Federal and State governments. Our job as local leaders is to provide stability, clarity, preserve governance and remain calm. Facebook and self-appointed local experts are not a source of sound advice. I will be a mayor that listens, takes advice, remains calm, and makes clear decisions that protect safety, and the vital economy of our region in accordance with higher government directives. This is not the time for every man for themselves.
If you want open, accessible and transparent local government, then I ask that you vote for me. I am not interested in “behind closed doors, backroom deals” or fostering a “bullying and harassment” culture. I want an inclusive Council that values employees, ratepayers and visitors to the same high standards as other successful Councils do. I want Council meetings accessible by all residents and ratepayers who can come and engage proactively with their Council, afterhours.

I said from the beginning if you are looking for a councillor who is going to stand up and talk for hours, then I am not the councillor for you. I believe in fewer words and more action. I believe in the voice of the residents being heard and I come armed with ideas on how that can occur. Never before has the Southern Downs had a greater need for strong, fair and compassionate leadership. On the back of bushfires, drought and now COVID 19, this region needs councillors who are prepared to stand up and fight for the rights of its residents. Meeting you all over the past four weeks has shown me there are so many areas we can improve on - water security, openness, transparency, economic growth, red tape, bullying within council walls, waste, delegated authorities and tourism are just the tip of the iceberg. I promise, if elected, I will not let your concerns go unheard and I will not be afraid to stand up for you. 12445585-LB13-20

WOW, what an election! Coronavirus, everyone voting early, some frayed tempers, but it seems we will elect a new Council after all of it.
The Southern Downs and Granite Belt has a huge significance for me with my mother, Shirley (née Cronin), born in Allora. My father, Jim, was born in Stanthorpe. My wife’s family, Benz and Fearby, are from the Allan and Karara districts. All families were among the first settlers and early pioneers of the Southern Downs and Granite Belt districts.
At meet-the candidate meetings, on my Facebook page, and in my newspaper ads I’ve always raised real issues. I’ve asked questions, I’ve offered my opinions and ideas for the future.
I’ve passionately promoted its wonders and represented the thoughts and opinions of those who feel they have no voice. Regardless of where you live in the region, big town or small:
I have the region’s communities and residents at heart and have enjoyed serving them the past 4 years.
I’m also happy to have them critiqued. I won’t support selling the saleyards. I want the pest management scheme reviewed. I want more transparency in Council. I want a balanced budget and want the grass mown and I want less PR and more genuine conversations with residents.
You deserve a say... You deserve to be heard…

Over the years whilst co-owner of the awardwinning luxury accommodation property Alure Stanthorpe, I’ve actively supported the community throughout the entire region.
I have over 40 years experience in banking and finance, specialising in agriculture, small and commercial business with qualifications in Accounting and Banking & Finance. I am a graduate of the Australian Rural Leadership Program and have completed the Company Directors Course of Australia.
Why? Because getting elected as a Councillor is not a beauty contest (thank God for that!), nor a competition of who’s done the most community service (all the candidates are very community minded). Elections should be a contest of ideas. So, I’m happy to share my ideas.

I fell in love with and moved to the Southern Downs in 2009. The community welcomed me with such open arms, I felt immediately at home. Although not born here, I believe the important thing is that I chose to live here, and continue to choose to live here…. I choose you.

I have no agenda and no political affiliation
My wife and I currently own and operate the Granite Belt Motel and Pink Poppies in Stanthorpe. Prior to this I had a successful career with the QRL, Stanthorpe Sports Association, Suncorp Bank and the Commonwealth Bank.
I am a candidate to represent you. With busy times ahead, a tough economic climate, households and businesses struggling, and an unsure future, we will need optimistic and enthusiastic people at the helm to steer us.
We are in for some tough times as Mayor I will endeavour to get the shire together and keep the dollars and work local. By buying local and supporting the local businesses this encourages job growth and stability by offering young people and families work in the area.
What I will support if elected: 1. Greater transparency, accountability, genuine engagement and consultation 2. Full review of SDRC Pest Management Scheme 3. Full review of ‘Service Levels’ of town entrances, parks, gardens and council infrastructure 4. Full review of Council procurement process to improve local business opportunities 5. Emu Swamp Dam, including possible partnership, plus investigating other ‘new’ water solutions for the wider region 6. Full review of Tourism Marketing and Economic Development Model
Looking forward, our region will need to consolidate and plan for the care and well-being of each other. Your most important assets are your family and neighbours. Get to know them, share with them, protect and trust them. The machine that governs our communities will keep operating, work with them and be patient. As a novice Councillor I can only guarantee constituents one thing for sure I will do my very best.
For businesses to survive there needs to be a stable economic platform from which to build, there needs to be access to reliable and cheap power, reliable and consistent access to water, schools, hospitals, doctors and social investment to encourage people to call the Southern Downs Regional Shire area home. The Council can identify and support key industries that drive economic development. Like shovel ready infrastructure projects.

As a long-standing resident of the Southern Downs, I aim to continue service to our community, as an elected member of Southern Downs Regional Council.
Hi, my name is Scott Christensen. I reside on the outskirts of Allora (4th generation in the Southern Downs); cattle farmer and contractor, my wife and I also own a small business in Warwick. Bronnie and I have been married for 28 years. We have 4 great kids and 3 terrific grandkids. We have been heavily involved in the Allora community over the years – Allora Landcare, Allora Show Society, and Allora State School P&C – to name a few.
Yangan resident for 35 years, an investment property in Warwick, knowing the issues of town & country, married 34 years, 3 adult children. A passionate active community member of Warwick RSL, Southern Downs Residents Action Group, assistant secretary Leukaemia Foundation Warwick.
I have a proven track record identifying issues through collaboration with community members, leading to the implementation of suitable and sustainable solutions to achieve positive outcomes.
Volunteering, listening, advocating, encouraging a united community for amicable, logical, positive outcomes in my town & further afield, having a track record of dealing with local members, ministers & government depts at all levels gaining major projects. keeping my finger on the pulse witnessing disillusioned rate payers in our local government region, a grassroots voice without personal agenda, speaking up for the greater good, albeit at times, to my own detriment,
I bring to the SDRC table a well-rounded and robust skill set. I value collaboration, clear communication, transparency of processes and can see, with 2020 vision, a progressive and productive future for all living in our diverse communities.

PM ANNOUNCES FED SUPPORT... STATEMENT BY SCOTT MORRISON, 22 MARCH ... The Commonwealth Government has released the second stage of its economic plan to cushion the economic impact of the coronavirus and help build a bridge to recovery. A total of $189 billion is being injected into the economy by all arms of Government in order to keep Australians in work and businesses in business. This includes $17.6 billion for the Government's first economic stimulus package, $90 billion from the RBA and $15 billion from the Government to deliver easier access to finance, and $66.1 billion in today's economic support package. Our economic support package includes: · Support for households including casuals, sole-traders, retirees and those on income support · Assistance for businesses to keep people in a job · Regulatory protection and financial support for businesses to stay in business The Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the Government was acting to cushion the blow from the coronavirus for businesses and households to help them get through to the other side of the crisis. "We want to help businesses keep going as best they can and for as long as they can, or to pause instead of winding up their business. We want to ensure that when this crisis has passed Australian businesses can bounce back," the Prime Minister said. "Our focus is on cushioning the blow and providing hope to every Australian that we will get through this and come out the other side together. "We know this will be temporary. That's why all our actions are geared towards building a bridge, keeping more people in work, enhancing the safety net for those that aren't and keeping businesses alive so they can get to the other side and stand up their workforce as quickly as possible. "We know Australia's more than 3 million small and medium businesses are the engine room of our economy. When they hurt, we all hurt. "The next few months are going to be a difficult journey but we all have a role to play to adapt to the changes we're facing, to cushion the impact of what is happening and to pull together so we can bounce back when we get to the other side." The Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said the $189 billion economic support package was the equivalent of 9.7 per cent of GDP. "The Government is taking unprecedented action to strengthen the safety net available to Australians that are stood down or lose their jobs and increasing support for small businesses that do it tough over the next six months. "These measures build significantly on what we have already announced. "These extraordinary times demand extraordinary measures."
CORONAVIRUS SUPPLEMENT The Government is temporarily expanding eligibility to income support payments and establishing a new, time-limited Coronavirus supplement to be paid at a rate of $550 per fortnight. This will be paid to both existing and new recipients of the JobSeeker Payment, Youth Allowance jobseeker, Parenting Payment, Farm Household Allowance and Special Benefit. The Coronavirus supplement will be paid for the next 6 months. Eligible income freetimes.com.au
made from 28 July 2020. Eligible entities will receive an additional payment equal to the total of all of the Boosting Cash Flow for Employers payments received. This measure is estimated to cost $31.9 billion over the forward estimates period, including the value of the measure announced in the first package.
CORONAVIRUS SME GUARANTEE SCHEME
support recipients will receive the full amount of the $550 Coronavirus supplement on top of their payment each fortnight. This measure is estimated to cost $14.1 billion over the forward estimates period. An increase of up to 5,000 staff for Services Australia will assist to support delivery of new Government measures.
PAYMENTS TO SUPPORT HOUSEHOLDS In addition to the $750 stimulus payment announced on 12 March 2020, the Government will provide a further $750 payment to social security and veteran income support recipients and eligible concession card holders, except for those who are receiving an income support payment that is eligible to receive the Coronavirus supplement. This second payment will be made automatically from 13 July 2020 to around 5 million social security, veteran and other income support recipients and eligible concession card holders. Around half of those that benefit are pensioners. The first payment will be made from 31 March 2020 to people who will have been on one of the eligible payments any time between 12 March 2020 and 13 April 2020. This measure is estimated to cost $4 billion over the forward estimates period.
EARLY RELEASE OF SUPERANNUATION The Government will allow individuals in financial stress as a result of the Coronavirus to access up to $10,000 of their superannuation in 2019-20 and a further $10,000 in 2020-21. Eligible individuals will be able to apply online through myGov for access of up to $10,000 of their superannuation before 1 July 2020. They will also be able to access up to a further $10,000 from 1 July 2020 for another three months. They will not need to pay tax on amounts released and the money they withdraw will not affect Centrelink or Veterans' Affairs payments. This measure is estimated to cost $1.2 billion over the forward estimates period.
TEMPORARILY REDUCE SUPERANNUATION MINIMUM DRAWDOWN RATES The Government is temporarily reducing superannuation minimum drawdown requirements for account based pensions and similar products by 50 per cent for 2019-20 and 2020-21. This measure will
benefit retirees by providing them with more flexibility as to how they manage their superannuation assets.
REDUCING SOCIAL SECURITY DEEMING RATES On top of the deeming rate changes made at the time of the first package, the Government is reducing the deeming rates by a further 0.25 percentage points to reflect the latest rate reductions by the RBA. As of 1 May 2020, the lower deeming rate will be 0.25 per cent and the upper deeming rate will be 2.25 per cent. The change will benefit around 900,000 income support recipients, including Age Pensioners. This measure is estimated to cost $876 million over the forward estimates period.
BOOSTING CASH FLOW FOR EMPLOYERS The Government is providing up to $100,000 to eligible small and medium sized businesses, and not for-profits (including charities) that employ people, with a minimum payment of $20,000. These payments will help businesses' and not-for-profits' cash flow so they can keep operating, pay their rent, electricity and other bills and retain staff. Under the enhanced scheme from the first package, employers will receive a payment equal to 100 per cent of their salary and wages withheld (up from 50 per cent), with the maximum payment being increased from $25,000 to $50,000. In addition, the minimum payment is being increased from $2,000 to $10,000. The payment will be available from 28 April 2020. By linking the payments to business to staff wage tax withholdings, businesses will be incentivised to hold on to more of their workers. The payments are tax free, there will be no new forms and payments will flow automatically through the ATO. This measure will benefit around 690,000 businesses employing around 7.8 million people, and around 30,000 NFPs (including charities). Small and medium business entities with aggregated annual turnover under $50 million and that employ workers are eligible. NFPs entities, including charities, with aggregated annual turnover under $50 million and that employ workers will now also be eligible. This will support employment at a time where NFPs are facing increasing demand for services. An additional payment is also being
The Government will establish the Coronavirus SME Guarantee Scheme which will support small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to get access to working capital to help them get them through the impact of the coronavirus. Under the Scheme, the Government will guarantee 50 per cent of new loans issued by eligible lenders to SMEs. The Government's support will enhance lenders' willingness and ability to provide credit to SMEs with the Scheme able to support $40 billion of lending to SMEs. The Scheme will complement the announcement the Government has made to cut red-tape to allow SMEs to get access to credit faster. It also complements announcements made by Australian banks to support small businesses with their existing loans. This builds on the investment the Government is making to enable smaller lenders to continue supporting Australian consumers and small businesses, through providing the AOFM an investment capacity of $15 billion to invest in wholesale funding markets used by small authorised deposittaking institutions (ADI) and non-ADI lenders. It further supports the Reserve Bank of Australia's announcement of a $90 billion term funding facility for ns ADIs, that will reduce the cost of lending, with particular incentives to lend to small and medium enterprises. The measures the Government is announcing today, along with the previous announcements, will deliver a total of $125 billion to support Australians get through the impact of the coronavirus. The Government will guarantee up to $20 billion to support $40 billion in SME loans.
PROVIDING TEMPORARY RELIEF FOR FINANCIALLY DISTRESSED BUSINESSES The Government is temporarily increasing the threshold at which creditors can issue a statutory demand on a company and the time companies have to respond to statutory demands they receive. The package also includes temporary relief for directors from any personal liability for trading while insolvent. The Corporations Act 2001 will be amended to provide temporary and targeted relief for companies to deal with unforeseen events that arise as a result of the Coronavirus. · This builds on the support for business and business investment provided in our first economic support package, which included: · increasing the instant asset write off · backing business investment by providing accelerated depreciation deductions · • supporting apprentices and trainees · targeted support for Coronavirus-affected regions and communities For more information on how to access assistance contact the office of Federal Maranoa MP David Littleproud on 4661 2494 and visit davidlittleproud.com.au ●

$17M FOR VACCINE RESEARCH Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk this week announced a $17 million package to fast track a world-leading vaccine for coronavirus developed in Queensland. The Premier said the State and Federal Governments were working together with the Paul Ramsay Foundation to support the University of Queensland's School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences who have gained worldwide attention for a promising COVID-19 vaccine. "This disease has already killed thousands throughout the world. We're doing everything we can to put an end to the devastation," the Premier said. "Finding a fast, safe and effective vaccine to prevent infection from COVID-19 is an urgent public health priority. "We will provide funding through our Advance Queensland strategy to fast-track a vaccine for this virus. "I'm glad to say, thanks to 20 years of strategic investment through the Smart State and Advance Queensland initiatives, we are in the position today where we can say that Queensland researchers are on the brink of producing an effective vaccine against this devastating disease. "Clinical use of the vaccine is a longer-term fix. In the immediate future, Queenslanders should continue to take steps like thoroughly washing their hands, staying 1.5 metres away from others and staying home and isolated if they're sick. "Most importantly, listen to authorities and expert medical advice."
The funding package announced today includes: · $10 million from the State Government · $3 million from the Federal Government · $3.5 million from the Paul Ramsay Foundation Federal Minister for Health Greg Hunt said Australia has produced some of the world's best medical research. "This is another example of us contributing to address important health challenges for Australians and for the global population." "Research plays a critical role in ensuring Australia maintains its world-class health system and is particularly important as the world responds to COVID-19." Innovation Minister Kate Jones said the funding announced today would enable UQ
mean there will be a vaccine available for emergency use among healthcare workers and vulnerable populations in early 2021," she said. Paul Ramsay Foundation CEO Professor Glyn Davis AC said the Foundation was pleased to be involved in funding the University of Queensland's vaccine research. "We are all in this together and it is our collective responsibility to contribute as best we can to get through this difficult period," Professor Davis said. The University of Queensland is the only Australian organisation and one of only six globally to be tasked by the Oslobased Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) to develop a vaccine against the novel coronavirus. Dr Keith Chappell said by running the vaccine manufacture and clinical trials in parallel, it meant the moment they had success in the clinic, doses would be ready to go. "Today's announcement means we can act now - to make sure that we can roll out a safe and effective vaccine as quickly as we can to protect vulnerable people including the elderly and healthcare workers," Dr Chappell said. "The containment procedures being put in place within Australia and internationally will slow the spread of the virus. We want to use that time as effectively as possible. If we can scale up manufacture at the same time as testing safety and efficacy, we might well prevent future escalations." ●
along with research partners - the Doherty Institute and CSIRO - to undertake clinical trials to test the safety and efficacy of the vaccine candidate. Ms Jones said it would also enable the large-scale manufacture of a potential vaccine if successful. "This vaccine could save millions of lives," she said. "The research UQ is doing now is putting Queensland on the map. "If we can be part of the solution, this research will help Queensland tap into a multi-trillion-dollar industry." Ms Jones said this could reduce by six months the timeline for an effective vaccine, which would otherwise take 12 to 18 months at the earliest. "If they can achieve this, it could

PEAR FIGHT ONE FOR LONG HAUL As I drove out west in NSW recently I saw the effect of biological control on prickly pear infestations. The introduction of cactoblastis must have been am amazing relief to farmers in the western areas. It is certainly one of the most successful incidents of biological control known in Australia. Some other attempts at biological control have not been so successful. Notably the cane toad that was introduced in 1935 to control cane beetles. We all know that this has in itself become an environmental nightmare with the toads spreading far and wide and having a disastrous effect on out native wildlife. Cacoblastis however, has remained host specific and enabled huge areas of western land to once again become productive. In Dalby I believe there is a monument to the moth that was introduced in the 1920's. Like so many other things that have been introduced into Australia and have become a problem, there was what was considered, at the time, a valid reason for its importation. In other countries it is used as a natural fence barrier as nothing will tackle crossing it. It is also host to the cochineal insects and an attempt to establish a cochineal dye industry was another reason for bringing it here. At the time Spain had a worldwide monopoly on the production of the valuable
Some surprising uses - but ultimately a pest species... red dye. It was the red dye used for the British Army "Red Coats" and so Britain thought it a good idea to establish their own industry in the new colony in Australia! Cochineal insect infested prickly pear was first brought here from Brazil by Captain Arthur Phillip. Apart from the original "Opuntia monocantha" about 25 other species have found their way here, probably as garden cactus specimens. After reading about it, it is my belief that the control that I noticed in my drive, is the cochineal insect at work. While cactoblastis was the main control, cochineal insect was also released and was effective in some areas. In 1900 an area of approximately 10 million acres of South Queensland and western N.S.W. had been made useless by the infestation and this increased very rapidly until it is estimated that in 1925 the area was greater than 60 million acres, with the increase in some years, being in excess of 2.5 million acres. Now I am not a mathematician, but I have also read another
report that said the estimated area covered was 240,000 sq kms, equivalent to the size of the United Kingdom!! After many attempts at control with fairly deadly chemicals and attempts at cutting down, burning, rolling and various other unsuccessful methods, the cactoblastis caterpillar was released in 1926 and is still recognised worldwide as the most successful biological control ever. It was not an overnight success with huge numbers of the caterpillars bred and released, especially from the Chinchilla Field Station, but within 6 years most stands of the pest had been eradicated. Land that had been declared useless for any agricultural use was now able to be reclaimed and farmed. The spread of the pear in Australia has also been of interest world wide as it originates from areas of Texas and Florida with rainfall of 40-50 inch average but the areas where it spread here were of much lower rainfall. So much for your history lesson! I have also found many other interesting uses for this noxious pest. Apparently the fruit is very nutritious and each fruit can contain about 150-300 seeds. The seeds are very tiny and only contain about 5% oil. This oil apparently will make us all look years younger but it takes about 1 tonne of fruit to produce one litre of oil in a fairly labour intensive process

so is quite expensive. Research tells me that prickly pear can also be used in medicine as a control for type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, alcohol hangover, colitis, diarrhoea, and benign prostatic hypertrophy! It can also be used to fight viral infections - truly a plant of many uses! Now this information is all from "google" and I can't vouch for its accuracy or veracity but it makes for interesting and entertaining reading if you look it up. Apparently it has been a staple of Mexican and Central American cooking for thousands of years. I think they must have been very hungry to even try it in the first place!! Three parts are edible: the pad (leaf) as a vegetable, the flower petals as a garnish or added to salads and the fruit to be eaten as any other. The fruit can be mashed and boiled down with sugar to make a dark red syrup, it can be turned into a jelly and a recipe for "margarita jelly" was found - this included lime juice and zest, orange zest and tequila! The Mexicans are good at using cactus as tequila is made from the Agave plant, another desert cactus. I hope everyone is staying well and, after the frantic run on the supermarkets, has enough of everything to see this situation to its close. Stay away from people as much as possible and stay well. ●

THE SPIN
SPORT NOSTALGIA COMES TO FORE Sport means little if it is not about passion and connection and no sports are more tribal than football. When the second cement shoe dropped and the NRL announced it was suspending the 2020 competition on Monday night the news reverberated around the country like a tremor. NOT RUGBY LEAGUE. The news came on the back of the AFL announcement on Sunday and the dreadful scenes we witnessed on Monday as thousands of ordinary Australians lost their jobs. AFL, NRL and any of our major sports are far more than just that "sport". They are multi-million dollar businesses employing thousands of people not just a group of sometimes overindulged and overpaid footballers. With that in mind Peter V'Landy's announcement impacted more than just the players, a game of footy and your local tipping competition. V'Landy's statement revealed what many with inside knowledge have been trying to tell us for some time - the greatest game of all is not in the greatest of financial shape. Why How or Who is not for me to debate but the golden age of entitlement for rugby league players is likely to come to a halt and at the end of the rainbow there is no pot of gold. No-one knows how long the NRL and rugby league at grass roots will be in hiatus but what we do know now is that when it returns things will be a whole lot different. When and if rugby league returns this season, we can expect to see plenty of changes going forward. The survival of clubs who have been on life support for several seasons must be in jeopardy but also some of our more financial clubs will find the corporate sponsorship they have for so long enjoyed might wither and disappear into the wind. Many people were relying on the old certainties of supporting their preferred footy club or code to help ease the impact of Covid19. In an instant that certainty also was taken away causing almost certain disappointment. Now we are left to rely on re-plays and sporting nostalgia. The games we love, be it NRL AFL or Rugby Union will survive - when they return things might be a little more realistic and hopefully the gap between the elite and grass roots might narrow. If that happens the pain we are experiencing at the moment might just be worth it. Perhaps this crisis will lead to a readjustment in not only rugby league and other codes but life as we have become accustomed too. Casey BALLANDEAN LADIES STAR CELEBRATEES SELECTION 15 year old Lauren Coelli who plays for the Ballandean Ladies Football sides was last week celebrating her selection in the Darling Downs School Under 16 -19 side. The Darling Downs rep side was scheduled to play in the State championships which were to commence on May 28 at Northgate in Brisbane. Despite her disappointment at the cancellation of the tournament Lauren who plays either midfield or goal said she was excited to have been selected. The teenager is looking forward to the coming local season if and when players get back on the paddock. 22 SOUTHERN FREE TIMES

BOWLS CANCELLATION The Summit Bowls Club was scheduled to host the Men's District pairs last weekend but following a directive from Bowls Queensland the event was cancelled. Due to the restrictions in place the Men's Singles championship set down for this weekend has also been cancelled. If you require further information regarding the club closure or any other matters please contact the President tony Schubert on 0437683993 or John Shannon, the Games Director (0419 681 779). The Tannymorel Bowls Club has also been forced to suspend the popular 2020 Tanny Classic 2 and all other scheduled games. We will bring you any updates to these situations as they may come to hand. SOCIAL DISTANCING - NO PROBLEMS Golf is one local sport where the current social distancing rules are quite easy to adhere to depending on how your game is on any particular day. Scott Constable had no such worries about his game on Saturday in play for round two of three for the Pike Trophy which was sponsored by Stephen and Sandra Kay. Constable returned a score of 70 off the stick, two under course par resulting in nett 68 and three shots clear of the field. Junior golfer, Matt Burgess, was declared runner up but not before a count back with Peter Gibney when both players returned nett 71 with a half stroke difference for the result. Scores were equally as close in the Ladies competition where Kay Webb and Lyn Ludlow both returned scores of nett 78. Kay Webb had her nose in front following the count back and was declared the winner relegating Lyn to the runner's up position. The day's sponsor, Stephen Kay, featured in the minor prizes collecting the pin shots at three and 17, pro-pin at 9/18 and a ball in the run down. Nearest to the pin at three was Peter Gibney. The remaining pro-pins were claimed by Darryl Boekholt at 5/14 and Rod Werner at 1/10. There was only one pin shot for the ladies. Lorraine Evans had the best approach at 12. The Birdies nest went unclaimed. In the run down, it was a ball to scores of nett 74 and better for the men and nett 80 for the ladies. Going forward in light of the ever changing health situation there will inevitably be a number of local rules put in place to cover the required protocols. In line with current rules and regulations being put in place for the current health situation, next week's competition time sheet has been posted at the club house. The club house will be closed as required and are likely to result in changes to some procedures. These will be revealed prior to play next week. The planned event is an individual stroke and third and final round for the Pike Trophy which will be sponsored by club member, Mark McCosker. Play will also be for the Nuffield Cup. Hopefully, play will commence at 11.30 am. ASSOCIATION CROQUET CONTINUES There were good numbers on the court for Tuesday's Association Croquet games and three games were decided. Heather Widderick played the pairing of Andrea Denkewitz and Peter Tunbridge. Denekwitz had a break of two hoops in a row. Heather Widderick made a peel during the course of

One of the hundreds of iconic images of Sir Donald Bradman housed at the Bradman Museum in Bowral. A quote from England player Denis Compton: "Don Bradman, captain and top-order batsman. A player not once in a lifetime but once in the lifetime of a game." Tests 52; Runs 6996; HS 334; AVG 99.94;100'S 29; Catches 32. the match however her opponents scored a 17-14 win Jenny Tunbridge took on Grace Howard and Effey Russell. In a close game Howard and Russell each made breaks of three hoops in a row, but Tunbridge played well to win the game 22-19. In the final game Carol Verwey and Peter Goodsir teamed to play Sharyn Roser and Joy Newman. In a great game Roser and Newman each recorded breaks of two hoops all tie. While Peter G made a 'peel'. In the end the teams could not be split; the score an 18-all tie. All Croquet disciplines will be suspended following the Association game played on 24 March. KEEP YOUR DISTANCE 'ROOS Sunday Sporters were out and about enjoying a dose of fresh air and exercise with a side order of golf and social distancing. The only social distancing issues coming from some of the resident 'Roos. Angelo Maugeri found his way into the winner's circle while Terry Byrnes was the runner up. Brynes also returned the Best Gross. Tony Steele and Norm Steele figured in the Run Downs. Run-downs went to Tony Steele and Norm Steele. Paul Byrnes had the Best Gross. Mark Lynam took the Pin Shot on The Pro Pin went the way of Mark Lynam and Terry Roser collected the Pro Pin. Taking home a meat tray each were Aaron Simmers and Paul Byrnes. Unless otherwise notified Sporters will continue on Sunday at the normal tee off 7.30-8.00am. GATEBALL A GOER Five players commenced Gateball on Friday morning. In the opening two games, Andrea Denkewitz and Joy Newman played as Team One. Eric McLellan joined the ladies for the final two games. Sharyn Roser, Heather Widderick and Grace Howard formed Team Two. Team Two opened the morning with a 15-12 win. Joy Newman 'sparked' a ball to 'agari' for her team. Heather played well in the winning team making a 'gate and touch' and followed up that with an 'agari'. Team2 went on to win the second game 11-8. In this game, Andrea Denkewitz made a 'gate and touch' gaining an extra shot for Team One. Joy Newman made a long 'spark' to score a gate. After an excellent start, results were reversed in the second half. Game Three was won by team one 14-8. Andrea Denkewitz
made two 'agaris' in this game. Eric McLellan made an 'agari' in the final game helping Team one to a 14-7 victory. Honours shared two games apiece by the two teams. DONE AND DUSTED Steve McEvoy who recently celebrated a significant birthday which included a six and a zero severed his final ties with rugby league earlier this month. McEvoy stepped down from the Queensland Outback Rugby League Committee, his last commitment to the sport. For McEvoy who was instrumental in the formation of the Border Rugby League it ends his very long involvement in Rugby League Administration. He also last year stepped away from his association with Stanthorpe Football and the Stanthorpe United Football club. His only regret is that now he has plenty of time to watch his beloved Liverpool play in the EPL - there is no football to watch. Never mind Steve "they'll be back" and there are still the gee gees. BRIDGE TAKING A BREAK Current health concerns impacted the weekly Bridge games at the Stanthorpe Civic centre last Thursday. With only enough players for two tables there was no competition played. In an effort to protect all members the club has closed indefinitely. The Annual General Meeting scheduled for this today (Thursday) has been postponed and the Congress in May cancelled due to current restrictions. MORE CROQUET DISCIPLINES Golf and Ricochet Croquet went ahead last week. In the Golf Croquet games Kathy Hopgood (4), Liz Ellway (3), and Jennifer Gleadhill (2), proved a winning combination against opponents Pauline Inglis (5), and Shirley Evans (1) in the opening game. After morning tea, Shirley Evans (4), Kathy Hopgood (3), and Pauline Inglis (2) combined for an easy win against Judy Locke, Liz Ellway and Jennifer Gleadhill who had a combined score of three. Last Thursday in the Ricochet games Marion McCulloch played well in her first game of the year as did her partner Jenny Tunbridge. The pair played a very close game against Carol Verwey. Carol played some very accurate long shots during the game. Despite having one run of 23 it was not enough when her opponent's pegged out for 26 total which included one run of two from Jenny Tunbridge. freetimes.com.au
email: wickets-stpe@bigpond.com
Peter Tunbridge got off to a slow start in his game against Andrea Denkewitz and Sharyn Roser but managed a healthy score of 19 at the end of play. Once again it was not enough and Andrea and Sharyn scored 24 to claim the win. In this game, Andrea had a run of three and one run of two while Sharyn's game included a run of two. UNUSAL TIMES AS RSL CROWNED PREMIERS These are unprecedented times and as Stanthorpe cricketers prepared for the semi final game and the season grand final the Stanthorpe Cricket Association received notification from Cricket's governing bodies (Cricket Australia and Qld Cricket) recommending all senior and junior cricket played at community level cease immediately due to the Coronavirus pandemic. A meeting of delegates from SDCA clubs, the umpires Assoc, and committee members discussed the recommendations put forward by CA and all other available options. As a result it was decided that the Association should follow the recommendations put forward and the remainder of the 2019-20 SDCA season has been cancelled. As Minor Premiers, RSL was declared champions of the 2019-20 season. It is unfortunate for the semi final teams Valleys and Wanderers who were no doubt looking forward to the opportunity to challenging for the season's premiership honours. In announcing the SDCA decision, President Ben Staley said, "As President I am aware that this is unprecedented and a terrible way to end our season." Staley said while it was an unfortunate course of action, he believed it was the duty of the Association to set an example to the community. Congratulations to RSL on their Minor Premiership victory and as such Premiership win. Well done to all other clubs who continue to keep the proud tradition of cricket in the district alive. The Junior players were not immune and were also impacted by the Queensland Cricket directive with their end of season celebrations cancelled. Congratulations to the many juniors who played this season. NOT QUITE SPORT BUT AS IMPORTANT Not quite sport but equally important to some of our readers are a couple of cancellations on the Southern Downs. The annual 2020 Art in the Mill has been cancelled. The Granite Belt Junior Choir has also been cancelled until further notice based on recommendation regarding non-essential gatherings. Morwenna Harslett of the GB
Junior Choir has advised that she will post links and clips on our GBJC Facebook page so that kids can continue singing at home. RACING KICKING ON As sport across the State, Nation and Internationally ground to a halt all three Australian racing codes were given the green light to continue on Monday. The industry has persecuted their arguments convincingly and have made a good case to health officials in all States that racing should continue with strict lock down measures in place. Racing moved to go behind closed doors well before they were required to do so and all jurisdictions have taken some extraordinary measures. Races through until at least May will go ahead "crowd free' and social distancing in the jockey's rooms is being tightly monitored. Last Saturday's lucrative Rosehill Golden Slipper went ahead with some sensational racing and great finishes. Jockey High Bowman cracked it for his first ever Golden Slipper win on the Waterhouse / Bott trained Farnan. Like the Melbourne Cup, the Golden Slipper was a Group One missing from Bowman's rap sheet prior to Saturday. In a light hearted moment although there were no crowds to cheer him back to scale the popular hoop played up to the missing crowd even tossing his goggles as he returned to scale on the winner. While race days without crowds seem unusual, members of the racing industry are quite at home with empty grandstands and limited spectators - at least they are in the early hours of nearly every morning at the track. While it is all systems go at this stage, for the Australian industry the announcement that the Queensland government will close the Queensland borders on Wednesday may be a game changer. It will no doubt cause a rethink of, at the very least the Queensland Winter Carnival. NZ AND DUBAI SUSPENDED The racing news from across the ditch on Monday was not as bright for our Kiwi counterparts as NZ moved to shut down racing for the next four weeks as the country moves to level four of the Covid-19 alert system. Further afield, the prestigious Dubai World Cup meeting has not fared as well as Australia's Autumn Carnival. The Dubai meeting with prize money of $35million is the latest major event to be cancelled over the coronavirus pandemic. Arrangements were in place for the meeting to go ahead as scheduled but behind closed doors with
appropriate protocols in until next year. BADMAN MUSEUM Recently, on the return road trip from Melbourne after the Women's T20 World Cup final I visited the Sir Donald Bradman Museum in Bowral. Regular readers will know that I am a big Bradman fan. It was not my first visit to the Bowral centre but it has certainly changed significantly since I was there last. There has been significant expansion to the complex and it is a haven for not just fans of the Don but lovers of the game. Every era of cricket, from the famous, but often over looked Indigenous touring side of 1868 through to our current game is covered. A time line of the development of cricket in this country and beyond. As a bit of a student of Bradman, I did not realise until this recent visit that Bradman led a tour to North America and Canada in 1939 not long after marrying his wife Jessie. The tour was apparently the brainchild of the Australian legs pinner Arthur Mailey who was the perfect salesman. He knew cricket's popularity was on the wane in America, and that the Don would be an unknown entity. Mailey used associations with baseball, the most similar sport to cricket, to cash in. Bradman was billed as the Babe Ruth of cricket, while Ruth could best be described as the "Bradman of baseball". Mailey secured financial support from the Canadian Pacific Railway Corporation on the guarantee that the Don would tour. Bradman was only recently married to Jessie and insisted his wife accompany him or he would not tour. The request was accepted, and the Bradmans, and 11 other players - including the captain, Vic Richardson, Stan McCabe, Chuck Fleetwood-Smith, and Mailey set sail on May 26 from Sydney on the Niagara and did not return home until mid September. Jessie Bradman becoming the first "WAG"). It is not widely know that Cricket's history in the US extends as far back as 1737.The first international match between United States and Canada took place in New York City in 1844; 33 years before the first official Test between Australia and England in 1877 While the corona virus has cleaned bowled many sports in 2020 it is interesting that as late as March 16, the announcement of a 22-team city based Minor League created quite a positive stir on the US cricketing landscape. The US is a big melting pot of cricketers coming from different nationalities and cricketing backgrounds scattered across the country.
CASEY O’CONNOR
Casey was thrilled to get his hands on the 2015 ODI World Cup recently at the Bradman Museum. Unfortunately due to security he says he was unable to souvenir the Cup. When the world returns to a new normal let's hope the 22-team Minor League goes ahead. Who knows it might open the flood gates for a raft of players with raw talent hiding in the USA cricketing hinterlands and realise some of the dreams of Bradman and his mates on that 1939 tour FISH FISH TO BEAT CABIN FEVER Fishing is one sport that can be enjoyed while observing the new norm of "Social distancing". We are fortunate of the Southern Downs and not too far afield to have many spots productive fishing spots. In addition to the local havens, the operators of the Glen Lyon Tourist Park are reporting catches of very good sized Murray Cod in the dam in recent days. The park is currently "Open for Business" as usual (or as near as possible) and for the Easter break. Operators Den and Brian Dare are adhering to all government standards of operation. And advise bookings for the Easter period are essential. The rain the area received several weeks ago increased the water level significantly (from around 3% to 14%). The sudden inflow has caused the dam to "turn over" and as a result many of the recent catches have been on surface type lures as the fish congregate closer to the surface. So if you are suffering a little cabin fever in coming weeks, grab the rod and your gear and head to your nearest creek, river, puddle or impoundment for a bit of fresh air and R & R from the world. Of course please check with your local fishing group regarding permits and restrictions. ●
