Donations roll in Locals have dug deep to raise money for cancer research, despite the Surf Coast Relay for Life being cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns. Surf Coast Relay for Life chairman Rob Tyler said participants have raised at least $36,500 for cancer research and support, with more money still coming in. The event was to take place on March 13 and 14 but was cancelled on medical advice from Cancer Council Victoria. The event’s committee is considering a shortened event later in the year to commemorate and celebrate cancer victims and survivors, Mr Tyler said. “We are waiting to see whether [money raised] will be recognised for 2020 or whether the amounts raised will be carried forward for next year’s [event],” Mr Tyler said. He vowed the Surf Coast Relay for Life would return in March 2021. A Cancer Council spokesperson said the cancellation was in the best interests of relay participants across the state. Luke Voogt

City ights virus fallout By Luke Voogt Geelong Chamber of Commerce and a veteran trader have urged residents to shop local as coronavirus fears impact businesses across the city. “he bottom line is to just keep spending locally,” said Hayden Spurling, former mayor and Geelong Traders Association president. “here are many businesses employing many people who need to keep paying their bills too.” Central Geelong had become “quieter” this week as COVID-19 continued to spread, with fewer people in the street or visiting shops, Mr Spurling said. “Business is certainly tougher and it will get tougher again, I think,” he said.

“It will be a particularly diicult time for restaurants and the hospitality industry.” He said most traders were taking “necessary steps” such as providing hand sanitiser and being mindful of customer numbers and proximity. He urged Geelong residents to continue to shop locally while taking “sensible” precautions. “Sadly in supermarkets we’re seeing very irrational behaviour,” he said. “It’s certainly not the end of the world. We’ve got a long way to go but I think we’ll get through it if we go about it in a sensible way.” Geelong Chamber of Commerce chief executive oicer Ben Flynn echoed the

message, encouraging locals to go out in “twos and threes” rather than large groups. “It’s about supporting businesses – just do it safely,” he said. Many local restaurants and cinemas were still open, he added. he chamber planned to contact all 850 of its members and had signed up 150 so far to a free advisory webinar covering subjects such as government assistance, Mr Flynn said on Wednesday. “hey’re all confused. hey’re all getting conlicting messages and working out how to deal with staf.” Meanwhile, the Rip Curl Pro became yet another casualty of COVID-19 concerns ater

the World Surf League cancelled the event. Libraries, theatres and community centres have shut down, while various organisers have called of dozens of events, expos and rallies across Geelong. Geelong Arts Centre cancelled all scheduled performances and events until April 12. Local libraries and mobile branches will close until April 14, Geelong Regional Library Corporation announced this week. Both the corporation and Geelong Gallery cancelled their events and education programs. Indigenous festival Wada-ngal, Lara Food and Wine Festival, Geelong’s Longest Lunch and Geelong Design Week were also cancelled. ■ Leisure

Stranded in Uruguay By Luke Voogt COVID-19 fears have stranded an elderly Highton couple on an Antarctic cruise ship of Uruguay as their family tries desperately to get them home. David and Estelle Cameron, in their 70s, are among 140 Australians and New Zealanders aboard the Ocean Atlantic, according to daughter Janelle Cameron-Lee. he couple let Australia late last month before embarking on the “trip of a lifetime” to Antarctica, Ms Cameron-Lee told the Independent yesterday. “hey let Argentina on March 2 when the Australian government was still telling people it’s OK to travel to Antarctica.” Ms Cameron-Lee, who lives in western Sydney, spoke to her parents on Wednesday for the irst time since the ship let Argentina. he couple paid to use the ship’s satellite phone ater seeing crew disembark.

We’re just trying to get them home

“I think they’re putting on a brave face for myself and the family,” she said. he ship docked in Uruguay about 36 hours ago and passengers have been unable to disembark, despite authorities inding no coronavirus infections on the ship. “he ship is completely clean of the coronavirus and they’re getting checked twice a day by the doctor,” Ms Cameron-Lee said. “hey do have internet – that they spent $20 for half an hour on – but they couldn’t even get their emails of it. “hey have said other people on board are starting to lose it a little but I don’t know that for sure.” Argentinian oicials prohibited the cruise from docking in Buenos Aires on March 16, Ms Cameron-Lee said. he ship had already been turned away from Ushuaia, a city on Argentina’s southern tip, and the British-held Falkland Islands, she said. Ms Cameron-Lee said her parents and the other Australians and New Zealanders on board had paid $5500 each for a chartered light to Sydney but they had no concrete mention of

a light actually happening. “We just keep on thinking there’s going to be an answer but the longer it goes on the more worrying it gets.” “What [others with family on-board] are telling me is that Montevideo airport is not actually big enough for that charted light. “We want the government to negotiate a place for the plane that they’ve paid for to land and bring them home. “We’re just trying to get them home.”

Ms Cameron-Lee said she had been in constant contact with the Department of Foreign Afairs. “We basically get told, ‘we’re aware of the situation, we have no advice at this stage, call back in two days’ time.’ Ms Cameron-Lee’s sister-in-law, Grovedale nurse Lisa Cameron, said she, husband Brendan and their two children Rhys, 14 and Lillie, 11, were becoming increasingly worried about the situation.

“We’re trying to shelter [the children] which is a bit hard when we’ve got constant phone calls and updates coming in. It’s a bit of a mess.” Uruguay has closed its borders due to the COVID-19 pandemic. he families of Australians stranded on the cruise ship have written to Prime Minister Scott Morrison urging him to intervene. ■ COVID-19

Geelong COVID-19 cases double By Luke Voogt COVID-19 cases doubled to 21 in Geelong and four on the Surf Coast, according to Department of Health and Human Services data. he data, last updated at 8.44am yesterday, showed an increase from 11 cases in Geelong and two on the Surf Coast on Wednesday. he rise comes as Victoria recorded its irst deaths from the virus, taking the national toll to 12. Two men aged in their 70s, died in Melbourne hospitals overnight on Wednesday. Victoria’s

chief health oicer Brett Sutton yesterday announced a third death, also a man in his 70s. Professor Sutton again warned everyone to take social distancing seriously. “his is the most important thing to get across,” he said. “If you don’t have to be outside your home, stay at home.” he department conirmed 54 new cases of COVID-19 in Victoria yesterday, bringing the state total to 520. “he total number of cases includes 300 men and 216 women [and] four cases under investigation [with] people aged from

pre-school age to late eighties,” the department said. “At the present time, there are nine conirmed cases of COVID-19 in Victoria that may have been acquired through community transmission. “Currently 14 people are in hospital, including three patients in intensive care [and] 149 have recovered. More than 26,900 Victorians have been tested to date.” All close contacts of conirmed cases and people arriving from overseas must self-isolate, the department warned. “While most Victorians are voluntarily

complying with requests to isolate, police have strong powers to enforce the direction if it’s required. “Under [Victoria’s] State of Emergency people who don’t comply with a directive could receive a ine of up to $20,000. Companies face ines of up to $100,000.” he federal government this week introduced stage two restrictions aimed at limiting social gatherings to a maximum of 10 people. Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has warned tighter restrictions are “imminent”. COVID-19 hotline: 1800 675 398

Clinic decision delayed Alcohol and drug addiction kills a Geelong woman “each month”, according to those behind a proposal to build a “desperatelyneeded” women’s rehabilitation clinic at Mt Duneed. Foundation 61 director Rob Lytzki made the “conservative” estimate ater Geelong council on Tuesday deferred a decision on the proposed eight-bed clinic to an independent panel. “Every month this ight goes on another woman loses her battle,” he said. Mr Lytzki said he was “disappointed”, despite expecting the deferral, which could delay the project by several months. he council received 38 submissions on the project – 31 objections, four in support and three others. But Mr Lytzki vowed to “do everything we can” to address the objectors’ fears. he council on Tuesday recommended changes to the proposal, including reducing

visiting hours and retaining or ofsetting native vegetation. But Mount Duneed resident Jan Calaby, who submitted a 130-signature petition to the council, warned the clinic could attract “undesirable” people. “[Foundation 61’s] own documentation says that women who are addicted to drugs and alcohol are oten in abusive relationships.” Ms Calaby said the clinic’s proximity to Mount Duneed Pony Club could put girls and women at risk from these “undesirable” visitors. he clinic was more suited to an “urban area” where police could respond sooner to any incident, she said. he council has not conirmed when the panel will meet to discuss a proposed planning amendment for the site. Family eases supply fears By Luke Voogt Belmont mother of four Ange Liston-McCaughley is sending emergency diabetes supplies across Australia during the COVID-19 crisis while, like many Geelong parents, home-schooling her children. “We’re just winging it to be honest – I think everybody is,” she told the Independent. Ange founded Type 1 Foundation in 2015 for daughter Lila, 16, ater her sudden diagnosis of diabetes at age nine. hey began home-schooling Lila two weeks ago and stopped her casual working shits to “be on the safe side”, she said. “We’re just trying to keep her healthy and entertained, which is hard for a teenager.” Diabetics were not more susceptible to coronavirus infection but any chronic disease could worsen its afects, Ange said. “Deinitely having a child with a chronic disease, there’s always that little extra bit of worry.” Since Lila’s diagnosis, Ange has kept a month’s supply of insulin in advance, but recently she was unable to buy any at her local pharmacy in Belmont and had to drive to Torquay to ind some. “We’re just inding there’s no supplies. It’s similar to what’s happened with the supermarkets. I don’t doubt it’s been happening because people are panicked.” Diabetes Australia had assured Ange the coronavirus had caused no insulin shortages, she said. But many families across Geelong and Australia had been unable to access supplies at pharmacies due to high demand. “Sometimes the wait, we’re inding, is 10 days to two weeks. People with type 1 diabetes need insulin or they will die.”

Ange Liston-McCaughley with diabetic daughter Lila and her three boys Ollie, Leo and Paddy. Rebecca Hosking) 206939_01

Type 1 Foundation has kept a “bank” of supplies, including insulin pumps and pens, since its inception, Ange said. Recently the foundation had sent supplies to those in rural Victoria and New South Wales afected by unprecedented bushires. “Now we’re sending out packages daily to families that need it.”

he foundation was connecting diabetic families so they share items with those low on supplies and, just as importantly, stay in touch through video chats, she said. “Hopefully that can help others that are feeling anxious – letting them know that they’re not alone.” Ange’s workload increased again this week

ater pulling Lila’s three “very active” younger brothers out of school. “his week, I think, is going to be testing,” Ange said. “hey don’t understand [why] they can’t leave home.” To worsen matters, her husband Leif McCaughley, a carpenter, lost his job on Wednesday due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Couple’s escape from Peru By Justin Flynn When Gaye and Bob Fraser let Ocean Grove for a holiday to South America, they didn’t realise the horror that was about to unfold. he seasoned travellers let for a 23-day trip when there were no recorded cases of COVID-19 in South America and Department of Foreign Afairs and Trade (DFAT) had issued no warnings. hey travelled to Lima, Peru, and then the Sacred Valley and were looking forward to Machu Picchu – but that is where the joy ended. he following morning the tour guide told them to pack for a bus trip to Cusco, two hours away, in an attempt to lee the country. he tour company had received word from the Peruvian government that border closures were imminent. he airport at Cusco was closed and Peru announced that it was closing its borders. here would be no lights and a curfew between 8pm and 5am was declared. “Even during the day, police were patrolling the streets, the hotel door was locked and you could only go to the local convenience store or chemist and only one at a time,” Gaye said. “his was when we realised how serious it all was. We even had a rushed trip to the airport in the bus as it was thought there was a suitable light, but the airport was locked down with police carrying riot shields.” he 19 people on the tour were told they would have to pay for accommodation and meals, Gaye said. he couple wrote an email to their travel agent, Lynette Armstrong from Ocean Grove Travel. “Within a couple of hours Lynne got back to say she had talked with the tour company and it was all going to be paid by them,” Gaye

said. “here was talk of charter lights but they were with a travel company we didn’t know and you had to pay $5000 each in advance but they had no guaranteed lights. “he government kept saying to make our own way home but there were no lights at all.” Several days later, Lynette, who Gaye said worked tirelessly trying to ind a solution, said there was inally some hope. “Lynette sent an email saying there was a light possible the next day going from Cusco to Santiago [Chile], which would connect with a light to Melbourne in the early hours of Saturday morning,” Gaye said. “She [Lynette] must have been up at all hours and working, what we feel, were miracles to get us on this light.” A taxi was arranged to get Gaye and Bob to the airport but it was a “nerve-wracking trip”, Gaye said. “he streets were eerily quiet, the only traic being police cars and we were constantly worried we would be stopped and turned back,” she said. “At the airport, which was still closed and guarded by police, we had to stand in the street for three hours, not knowing whether there was a plane or not.” Eventually they were let in and were inally able to board the light to Santiago and then Melbourne. “We have had emails from the other people from the trip and they are all still in Cusco with possible lights for some of them on March 31,” Gaye said. “Our escape, and that is not too strong a word for it, happened so suddenly and went so smoothly in the end that we were in almost disbelief. “We are sure that without Lynette we would still be in Peru.”

Queues form outside Centrelink By Luke Voogt Lengthy queues formed outside Geelong Centrelink oices this week ater the federal government announced payments for people afected by the coronavirus pandemic. A queue stretched about 100 metres at Centrelink’s central Geelong oice, while in Corio dozens of people lined up for services. A witness told the Independent some were abiding by new social distancing regulations of 1.5 metres between people, but others in the central Geelong queue were ignoring the regulations and putting public health at risk. he queues come despite Services Australia, which operates Centrelink, urging people not to visit the centres. “Please consider the health and safety of our customers and staf,” the agency said in a statement online. “Do not visit our service centres unless there’s a critical need for you to be there.” he queues mirrored a rush across Australia to access Centrelink payments ater the federal government unveiled a second stimulus package of $66 billion on Sunday. he package included a fortnightly $550 Coronavirus Supplement from April 27 for eligible Australians, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg announced. he federal government ordered non-essential services, including pubs, gyms and restaurants, to close their doors on Monday to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Sole traders and casual workers currently making less than $1075 a fortnight will be eligible to receive the full supplement. People on the Jobseeker (formerly Newstart) allowance are also eligible for the payment, while ive million other Australians could be eligible for two $750 Economic Support

Payments. People already receiving Centrelink payments who were eligible for either supplement would receive them automatically, Services Australia said. Services Australia encouraged anyone who needed to apply for an income support payment due to losing their job or reduced income to start their application online at my.gov.au.

“If you need to provide proof of identity and you’re in self-isolation or feeling unwell we can do this over the phone – but please defer until later if you can,” Services Australia said. “We urge you not to come into our service centres if you’re unwell.” On Monday a cyber-attack hit the federal government’s myGov website, which, combined with increased demand, caused the online portal to crash.

Government Services Minister Stuart Robert said more than 50,000 Australians were trying to access the site when the distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack hit. “here is unprecedented demand for the service right now, but Australians need to be patient. Try logging on later today or even tomorrow,” Mr Robert said. “MyGov is working, but the best option right now is for people to be patient.”

Coronavirus shuts city

NEWS

The Gordon moves online

By Luke Voogt Geelong council has closed Eastern Beach and more than 320 playgrounds, skate parks and bike facilities following the latest federal and state COVID-19 measures. he closures came into efect yesterday as part of a nationwide ‘stage two’ shutdown as the federal government aimed to limit social gatherings to 10 people. Council on Wednesday also announced the closure of Breamlea Caravan Park. Long-term residents, and people staying at the caravan park while their primary residence is unavailable, can remain there, according to the council. Central Geelong was a ghost town this week with most people staying at home, and only going out for essential supplies, to prevent the spread of coronavirus. On Tuesday night, the council adopted a $3.2 million package to help the community and businesses through the pandemic. he initiatives included waiving fees for community and sporting groups using city-owned lands for six months, beginning March 1. City Hall will also refund alfresco dining and A frame permit fees for 12 months, and food and health premises fees for three months of the 2019-20 inancial year. Casual on and of-street parking will be free in central Geelong until June 30. City Hall estimated the free parking initiative would cost about $2 million, based on last year’s data. he council will develop a COVID-19 inancial hardship policy including consideration of rates alongside its 2019-20 budget, Geelong mayor Stephanie Asher said. “here will be more to come, but the list of support measures we’ve agreed is a good start

as we look to support our local businesses and the community through this incredibly diicult time.” City Hall chief executive oicer Martin Cutter said the council would continue to provide essential services plus any other

services possible to deliver under social distancing guidelines. “We are delivering as much as we can, provided we adhere to the rules.” he essential services included care for the elderly, park maintenance and waste and recycling, Mr Cutter said.

Geelong’s he Gordon TAFE has shut its doors for at least three weeks, with students to continue classes online for the remainder of the term. Chief executive Joe Ormeno said the TAFE was following Victoria Government recommendations alongside TAFEs across the state. “Students [are] expected to return to normal studies at the commencement of term two.” Mr Ormeno said he Gordon was an essential service, so staf would continue to work to support remote learning. He said education and training were moving to an online forum and he Gordon would update students on variations to the curriculum as a result of COVID-19 as they evolve. “Of highest importance is the health and safety of staf and students.” he Gordon would continue to implement precautionary measures including good hygiene and social distancing, preventing large gatherings and cancelling or postponing non-essential events, Mr Ormeno said “he Gordon plays a key leadership role in the region’s economic and social development,” he said. “In the wake of the coronavirus, we are conident that in collaboration with our industry partners and key stakeholders we can continue to deliver high quality learning outcomes to our students.” Luke Voogt

ice, SII and MASIE, and both also show Arctic sea ice has not changed signiicantly since 2006. Greenland is also supposed to be on a “death spiral” but snow accumulation for two of the past three years has been above average and Greenland’s two biggest glaciers, Petermann and Jacobshavn, have been advancing for the past four years. Arctic ice extent is about the same as it was in the 1930s. It is primarily governed by ocean currents that bring warm waters from the equator and cycle Arctic temperatures about every 80 years. Readers, perhaps you should ask why the media doesn’t report the above. Peter Rees Bell Park

‘Great’ Scott’s sacriice By Luke Voogt

Peri Stavropolous

it’s going to be a monumental challenge for all of us - Chris Scott

Sources conirmed Scott had taken the pay cut as Geelong Football Club stood down 100 of 135 staf this week as the COVID-19 pandemic spreads. “I think we’re all a little bit scared at the moment and we can’t sugar-coat that part of it,” Scott told AFL 360 on Monday. “here’s a lot that’s going to happen over the next couple of weeks and I suspect it’s going to get worse before it gets better and it’s going to be a monumental challenge for all of us.” Geelong Cats had not responded to the Independent before deadline as to whether the club would refund any membership fees, with the AFL to be postponed for two months. But the majority of members the Independent spoke to were happy for the Cats to keep the money.

Chris Scott has sacriiced his entire salary for Geelong Cats. (Supplied)

“If it helps to keep the club on its feet, I’m happy to let them keep it,” said Ms Rossiter. “It’s going to be weird without footy.” Ms Rossiter, 56, said she had been a member for 30 years and a Cats fan for 55. Meanwhile Geelong defender Mark Blicavs is under ire for hosting a rowdy party including

other Cats players into the early hours of Sunday morning. Neighbours told the media that police were called twice during the night. he club has described the party, louting measures to prevent coronavirus spread, as inappropriate.

General Notices

Although the weather isn’t favourable, anglers are still getting among some great ishing from all parts, even fresh or salt water. Inside Corio Bay has been producing some great land-based action for pinkie snapper, Cunningham Pier and around ‘Fisherman’s Pier’ are two of the hotspots at the moment and if out in a boat just about every structure you can access should be holding ish. Gulp turtleback worms are always a standout plastic to have handy, but most plastics between 3-4 inch will work just ine too. here has also been plenty of salmon and lathead snatching up angler’s lures too! Werribee South is still ishing exceptionally well for King George whiting, ishing on the incoming tide has been the ideal time to ish. he whiting are averaging about 33 centimetres and holding in great numbers, which is making for a great ishing option. he Bellarine Peninsula has been on ire for King George whiting this past week with most boats inding a bag of ish seemingly easy and some quality sized ish too. St Leonards through to Queensclif are by far the most productive locations, ishing of an evening and/ or a tide change has been a key factor with baits such as pipi and squid being a standout. he calamari ishing along the Bellarine has also been very good, with great numbers and some very solid specimens getting around too.

Geelong Cats fans have praised coach Chris Scott for sacriicing his entire pay while continuing to work alongside the club’s skeleton coaching staf. “How good’s that!” said Lismore grandmother and Cats fan Lynn Rossiter. “He’s got family as well, so for him to do that … that’s so awesome.” Member of ive years Jayson Green, 18, joined several Geelong fans in praising the move. “I think it’s great what he’s doing and other coaches should follow in his footsteps,” the Belmont local said.
