Beaconsfield Primary School SCHOOL Tours go online at Beaconsfield. We can’t conduct live tours of the school at the moment with the COVID-19 pandemic rumbling along; so during Term 3 we have an online tour at www.beaconsfield.vic.edu.au under the 2021 Prep enrolment tab. It has a quick overview of our facilities and activities presented by our School Captains. The world may be topsy turvy now; but here at Beaconsfield we have all of our children back, the buzz of engagement and fun fills the air and I swear, you can smell the learning! Our students have missed their friends terribly and so, to make up for it, their teachers have built in many opportunities for shared learning, collaboration, and play. Our Prep team is a very special group of people who teach with passion and commitment. Carolyn, Briony, Tara, Lisa and Liesl love, accept, and welcome every child unconditionally and work together to create safe, positive and supportive learning environments. They elevate and praise our children, encouraging them to appreciate the efforts of their peers, building friendships and goodwill through appreciations. We strive to ensure each child achieves their potential: We will do our best to ensure that our children are:

Belgrave South Primary School BELGRAVE South Primary School has been providing excellence in teaching and learning for over 100 years. Located in the Dandenong Ranges, the school provides well equipped grounds and buildings in a beautiful setting. We are an integral part of the local community and we highly value the support of our parents and community members in our school each day. We work together to facilitate excellent learning opportunities, provide state of the art technology and develop innovative learning spaces. Our Science and Inquiry Learning Centre and Maker Space supports the development of critical and creative thinking. We encourage high achievement and our students achieve excellent results. We have strong links with local pre-schools and offer an extensive transition program that commences in July for enrolled students. We offer before and after school care and an exciting program of extra-curricular activities. Beginning primary school is an exciting time. The right start to school helps children build positive relationships and to develop a strong sense of identity and belonging, both of which are important to their long-term development, learning and wellbeing. Our school tours give you the opportunity to see learning in action and meet our junior school teaching team. You can see the broad range of exciting learning programs and the many opportunities that are available to our students in

Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Digital Technology/ Multimedia, Creative Arts, Physical Education, Japanese, Environmental Education, Hospitality (Plot to Plate Program) and Student Leadership. Our Foundation Transition Program helps your child to become familiar with our school through specialist learning activities and play based sessions. Children will be well supported by their new teachers as they build their confidence and increase their readiness to start school. It is incredibly rewarding for both parents and teachers to watch our children grow socially, emotionally and academically during the program and throughout their early years at Belgrave South Primary School. The program also gives us the opportunity to welcome and involve parents in our Belgrave South Primary School community. We run sessions especially for parents to explore what the early years of school involve and how we can work together to ensure that students make the best start to school. We are proud of our school and look forward to meeting you for a school tour. Engaging Students via Augmented Reality CAPTIVATING students attention and interest is a central challenge for all teachers wishing to make a real difference. That challenge was put to my colleagues and me throughout our years in training to become teachers. That was then, many years ago, and it remains so now. Technological advances have brought with them wonderful opportunities with which to enhance the engagement of students in their learning. Paradoxically, they have simultaneously also brought with them, frustrating distractions. How then to maximise the positive opportunities, whilst minimising the negatives? Insofar as minimising the distractive potential of digital technologies, the Victorian Department of Education & Training have introduced a ban on mobile phones use by students during school hours, with limited exceptions. On the other hand, how can schools capture the potential of digital technologies to best engage students in their learning? There is certainly no shortage of software available that teachers can access with this intent. That is only the beginning - Immersive Experience STEM Education (IXSTEM), an acronym, by the way , which was non-existent just a few years ago, offers new and exciting pathways to engagement. At Berwick Lodge Primary School, several years ago we embarked on a journey focused on better engaging kindergarten children in their learning as they transitioned to primary school.

Technological advances have brought with them wonderful opportunities with which to enhance the engagement of students in their learning. This culminated in the publication of an Augmented Reality (AR) illustrated story book, titled, The Adventures of Harry the Helmeted Honeyeater & Hettie the Forest Keeper late last year. Building on the success of this initiative this year we have introduced learning units on creating AR characters for our students. Simultaneously we have partnered with Deakin University in a research project on the potential of AR to enhance student engagement in their learning. As educators we owe our children our best efforts to provide them with the richest of learning opportunities and having them loving to learn is the bedrock. Why not check us out? Glendal Primary School REFLECTING on what has been a tumultuous first semester for schools in Victoria, and even all over the world, I look out onto beautiful school grounds on a sunny day in Glen Waverley and feel very fortunate. Our students have returned to school happily and safely and our online learning program, which worked very well, was appreciated by our community. Everyone felt well informed and supported by the school. Our staff have shown a high degree of camaraderie, team work and enhanced relationships with students and their families. We are looking to use some of the elements of the online learning program to improve communications and our day to day teaching and management programs. We have taken the opportunity, whilst having few students on the school site for the first half of Term 2, to bring forward and complete a range of grounds improvement projects and external painting of school buildings and classrooms. We have carried out maintenance work on play equipment and have organised for much of the equipment to be repainted in lovely bright colours. Our year 5 and 6 students are particularly excited with their new flying fox and rope climbing wall. The Glendal Parent Group fundraising projects have contributed to this work and the provision of

new seats for students and families. These seats set off our new artificial turf areas which, especially on a sunny day, provide comfortable places for students to sit and play. Our leadership team recently engaged a school photographer to film a virtual tour of the learning areas within the school and the outside grounds. A link to this tour will be available on our school website in late June as, unfortunately, we have been unable to operate school tours, this term. We were able to complete filming whilst the students were still working at home. Our School Captains and Vice Captains are now working on a commentary to describe each learning area which will be added as audio to the virtual tour. This virtual presentation of our school will enhance our onsite tours once these commence later next semester. Our aim is to develop happy, resilient and socially competent children who are inspired to achieve their best. We create and make the most of opportunities, even when things look bleak, and look to a positive future. I hope you enjoy our virtual tour and are able to visit our school in person later in the year. Deborah Grossek, Principal

Schools and coronavirus Grossek’s view JACKIE checked the time. She still had five minutes up her sleeve before she would be calling Barry. Barry was a long-time friend of her family, of her father more accurately. They were both primary school principals, had studied at university together and maintained a close personal relationship throughout the years since. Jackie had never entertained the thought of becoming a teacher – the lure of good holidays had never been enough to sway her into following in her father’s footsteps, career-wise. For her, the entertainment industry, or more particularly, radio held greatest appeal. Twenty years ago Jackie graduated with an Arts degree in media studies, landed a gig with a metropolitan community radio station, no pay of course, but a leg into her dream career. Working double shifts in bars and cafes paid the bills, honed her people skills and kept alive her radio dream. Jackie never did make it into the big league of commercial radio, but her hobby grew. Always keen to learn and fascinated with technology, Jackie turned to podcasting, well before the mainstream radio stations had cottoned on to its potential. Now, with a weekly audience in excess of 50,000 listeners, Jackie was in her salad days. Now, with COVID-19 on the rampage, podcasting’s popularity was on the rise. Indeed, it was one of a shrinking pool of entertainment avenues readily available to the public, a public whose freedoms to mingle were increasingly at the behest of the daily ebb and flow of coronavirus numbers. As she dialled Barry’s mobile number, she wondered how he was faring. Her father, for his part, had struggled with leading his school through term 2. Term 2, after all heralded in remote learning for students and his school was plumb in the middle of one of Melbourne’s most socio economically disadvantaged communities. Less than half of the students had access to computers at home, his school was most certainly not flush with the latest laptops and IPads. Added to that his technology specialist teacher was on extended sick leave. With the announcement that Melbourne was about to return to a Stage 3 lock down, the

ramifications for schools were profound – remote learning had to be on the cards again. The interview with Barry, would be most interesting indeed. “Hello. Is that Barry?” “Yes, it is, it is…………I guess that’s you Jackie. Is it?” Jackie noted a tiredness in Barry’s voice, a tiredness at odds with the fact that Barry was two thirds through the term 2 school vacation. “Are you okay, Barry?” Realising that in the moment when he answered the phone, he had let his customary guard down, Barry now regrouped. “As well as can be expected, Jackie, given the fact we are now about to return to remote learning for our students.” Jackie changed tack. “Look Barry, this is a prerecorded interview – how about a chat, off the record before we begin?” “Okay,” replied Barry, somewhat relieved. “Thanks - firstly, how are you feeling, I mean really feeling about going back to remote learning for the kids?” Barry paused before replying, well aware of the fact that his unplugged comments off air, might not be those that he would say were they to be broadcast online. “This is definitely not being recorded?’ he queried. “Definitely not”, Jackie reassured him. The fact was not lost on her that school principals, by and large were reticent about speaking on the record to the media and with some good reason she mused. “Not with a great deal of enthusiasm, I must admit.” “Why not?” Barry paused. The experience of providing remote learning for four weeks in term 1, had been a very stressful experience on many levels for everyone – teachers, students and parents. Yes, it had certainly hastened the upskilling of staff in the use of technology in their practice and in record time schools had rolled out remote learning programs to their students. The logistical challenges of doing so from scratch in just a few weeks had been monumental and on reflection, one of which all schools, not just his, could be very proud. Continued on page 22

Continued from page 20 The cost, however, was heavy – everyone was totally exhausted by the end of it….and glad it was over. The joy on the faces of the students as they returned to school in those last few weeks of term 1 was so uplifting, as was that of the parents, almost all of whom were simply relieved to have their children back at school. Teachers too were glad to be back on site, notwithstanding the substantial concern of catching COVID-19, given the different social distancing protocols in place in school classrooms compared with those in place in the broader community. “Well, it’s a case of dejà vu, I guess,” replied Barry, still reticent about being totally frank with a journalist. “What do you mean by that?” enquired Jackie, somewhat puzzled. “We all have to go through the same thing again – I can’t imagine that parents will be thrilled. They weren’t by the end of a four-week period last time. Sure, some kids almost thrived in the remote learning environment, but most didn’t. They missed their friends. Interestingly, from my feedback many parents who initially expressed concern about their children potentially slipping back in their learning, became increasingly concerned as the weeks went by, over the social and emotional impact on their children because of the isolation from their friends and school mates. Staff found the isolation hard too.” “Were there any benefits at all?” Jackie’s tone betrayed a sense of frustration with Barry’s apparent negativity. Barry noted this instantly. After all he had spent the greater portion of his life working in a people-centric profession. The importance of being able to read people’s emotions well, is a pre-requisite for success in professions such as teaching. “Sure, don’t get me wrong. We’ve learnt a lot in a hurry, a damned hurry I might add, about the provision of online learning in schools. That will stand us in good stead post-COVID-19. There’s no doubt that the whole exercise has brought our school community closer together – parents, staff and students. Feedback I have received and as have others, there’s a greater appreciation for the work that teachers do.

Now, with COVID-19 on the rampage, podcasting’s popularity was on the rise. Indeed, it was one of a shrinking pool of entertainment avenues readily available to the public, a public whose freedoms to mingle were increasingly... How long that lasts – who knows! But it is great to feel that appreciation right now.” “Hmmm. That’s interesting, Barry.” Jackie’s tone was appreciably more upbeat. Barry smiled inwardly. “Well I guess we should start the interview soon Barry,” hastened Jackie, keen to keep Barry’s positive observations on the boil. “Okay,” replied Barry. “Just a couple more things before we start. Firstly, I can’t see that remote learning as such has a great role to play in primary school education. The kids have to be supervised at home and that wouldn’t work for most parents with respect to their work commitments. Secondly, let’s not be too worried about any ‘slippage’ in the academic learning that might occur from this exercise - all those immeasurable, yet highly visible soft skill benefits the children will have gained will prove invaluable to them in years to come.” “Yes……can you elaborate, Barry?” “Of course. Resilience, adaptability and creativity…..to mention but a few. Thirdly, and most importantly, I would like to make the point during our interview that the whole remote learning exercise has brought to our attention, that it is the disadvantaged and the vulnerable students and their families that are suffering the most. If we act on that when this is all over then we will all be better off collectively.” “Thanks Barry -let’s get cracking!” Henry Grossek, Principal Berwick Lodge Primary School

Specialist teachers for each subject from Year 5 Lighthouse Christian College has turned thirty (30) and with an established history and reputation of being the Christian choice for excellence in education we enter the decades to follow with confidence. Innovation is pivotal to our mission of Christian teaching and learning and 2020 will see the College soar to new heights. Deputy Principal (Academic) Mr David Lepileo describes our innovative and best practice Christian teaching and learning model as follows: Teaching and learning has shifted and so to nurture students into the future they need to discern information and think for themselves. Being the Christian choice for excellence in education, Lighthouse Christian College will be introducing new and exciting changes within its curriculum and pedagogy. Our pedagogy will have a deliberate approach to 21st century teaching practice, with our teaching style to be student focused and centered on skills such as, critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. Likewise, our approach to learning takes into consideration the whole child and therefore our Sub-School’s will have dedicated Chaplains and counseling services to help keep our students feeling safe, happy and enjoying learning. Another exciting teaching and learning initiative taking place is the increased allocation of specialist teachers within years 5 and 6 Mathematics and English. VCE teachers will help students in the lower levels develop their knowledge and skills earlier so as to build their understanding for progressive growth. Similarly, Lighthouse will integrate STEM across Prep to Year 8, this will include Robitics and computer systems. The Year 9 and 10 STEM program together with the Year 11 and 12 VCAL program will engage them in a dynamic ‘Maker Space’, where they will be working on 3D printers, laser cutters and contemporary technologies to help them build skills for future success. We appreciate the funding we have received from the Commonwealth Government for cutting edge technology. All of these changes will add to our relational culture and build on our strong educational standards underpinned by our Biblical Christian worldview. The future at Lighthouse Christian College is indeed bright.

Preshil ESTABLISHED in 1931, Preshil is Australia’s oldest progressive school. Nestled across two campuses in Kew, Preshil is coeducational, secular and entirely independent. A deliberately small school, Preshil welcomes children from three years of age into the Kindergarten right through to the completion of their secondary education in Year 12. A confident sense of self-worth is integral to our vision of success for every child, with students supported to challenge ideas, think critically, make ethical judgements and set their own goals. At our core remains an unshakeable commitment to encourage all children to set and achieve their own goals, and to be respected as individuals in their own right. Preshil is committed to nurturing and challenging our children in an atmosphere that inspires creativity and independent thinking in all areas of life. The relationships between students and their teachers are sincere, respectful and focused on achieving outstanding learning outcomes, trust and a genuine regard for individuality. The Preshil approach to schooling is not competitive, and uses neither the fear of failure nor the threat of punishment to motivate children. Whilst remaining academically rigorous, we continue as a school that places genuine, respectful relationships at the centre of its operations. The belief that education should prepare students to be active, engaged and open-minded contributors to their communities (both local and global) has led to Preshil implementing the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programmes school-wide, providing a continuum of education.

The IB philosophy perfectly aligns with Preshil’s focus on intellectual challenge, inquiry and conceptually-driven learning. In the Primary Years Programme (Kindergarten – Grade 6), the IB challenges children to become active participants in their own education, respecting their agency, nurturing their strengths and encouraging creativity. Through an inquiryled curriculum, children explore local and global issues through the lenses of different subjects, imbuing them with the confidence to question and think critically and creatively about the world around them The Middle Years Programme (MYP) encourages the development of Year 7-10 students as active, compassionate and lifelong learners. The MYP facilitates an intellectually vibrant curriculum that respects and supports the individual learner. The Programme emphasises authentic challenge and creativity where students are motivated to identify and make connections between traditional subjects and the tangible world. The Diploma Programme (DP) is a globallyrecognised alternative to the state-based Year 12 certificates and prepares students to meet tertiary study and their chosen career paths with the maturity and depth of understanding required to flourish. The DP liberates students from a rigid, competitive curriculum; it respects the needs of the whole person, celebrating independent learning and individual choice. Preshil graduates have the courage to question, embrace their individuality and are responsible and dynamic global citizens.

Principal’s Message As Principal of Solway Primary School, I am extremely proud of our wonderful school community. Solway is at the centre of a connected community, actively involved with the school and valued for the generosity of time, energy and expertise that its members bring to the school. Our school motto ‘Our Best Always’, exemplifies the school’s work ethic and permeates the entire school community. The School‘s core values of Respect, Responsibility and Integrity are embedded into the school culture. Teachers are committed to ensuring students have a safe, caring and positive learning environment to thrive in. Daily Circles are used to develop positive relationships and foster open and honest communication. Student safety is a high priority, as teachers understand students learn best when they feel safe and happy. Solway is committed to the development of globally aware, civically minded lifelong learners and the importance of educating the ‘whole child’ through high expectations in literacy and numeracy and encouraging students to create and innovate through a rich curriculum. This is assisted through the provision of quality specialist programs in Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Japanese, Science, Physical Education and Sport. These programs are highly valued and supported by the school community. The specialist programs are further enhanced by a range of engaging and enriching whole school programs and extra-curricular activities both within and beyond the classroom. A strong emphasis is given to educating our students to live healthy, balanced lifestyles through the promotion of healthy eating, exercise, leisure pursuits, respectful relationships and active citizenship. The physical environment is important with careful planning from the Building and Environment sub-committee of School Council to ensure the buildings and grounds are well maintained. In 2019 a new Prep Playground was installed and a new artificial oval installed with a 2 lane running track and long jump run up. All this is a result of a very successful fundraising program, with the generosity of time, planning and financial contributions by our parents, families and local community. Our well maintained grounds comprise of a balance of landscaped areas and green space which allow students the freedom to run, encourages creative outdoor play and provides for participation in a variety of organised sports. In 2018 Solway celebrated 10 years of sustainability, of which we are justifiably proud. As a 5 Star Sustainable School under the ResourceSmart Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative (AuSSI Vic), our Sustainability teams work hard to continue our achievements in the 5 areas of Water, Waste, Energy, Biodiversity and Curriculum. The whole school Inquiry throughline of ‘Sustainability’ ensures that this remains a focus for classroom studies across the school. Our staff are all members of a Professional Learning Team. Teams work collaboratively with each other and are collectively responsible for the learning outcomes for the students in their care. Teachers are allocated regular time to plan, monitor, evaluate and support student learning in their areas. Classroom displays and a consistent approach to the language of learning, make learning visible for students and support continuous growth. Two Assistant Principals and a Literacy Learning Specialist, support teachers to ensure an evidence based approach to high quality teaching and learning. Digital technologies are employed in interactive and engaging ways across the school, to build students’ knowledge and skills in navigating an increasingly digital world. These tools are used purposefully to support personalised curriculum, and encourage students to be collaborative, creative and innovative in their learning. Our Robot Club and robotics program, provide coding opportunities for students and further support the digital technologies curriculum. As an accredited eSMART School, we recognise the importance of supporting our students and their families to develop the skills and knowledge to practise cyber safety and understand their responsibilities when using technologies and interacting online. Before, After School and vacation care is provided at our Out of School Hours Care Hall by TeamKids.

Secondary students come together TO support a sense of solidarity and Christian unity amongst the seven secondary schools in the Diocese of Sale, we prioritise opportunities for students to gather and celebrate their connection as part of one Catholic Diocesan community. These youth ministry events play an important role in developing student leadership skills, using peer to peer ministry to encourage other students to embrace the Christian call to act in the service of others. The leader of our Diocese, Bishop Patrick O’Regan, is a regular attendee at youth ministry events and strongly values the opportunity to connect with the young people in our schools. Director of Catholic Education for the Diocese of Sale, Ms Maria Kirkwood, said youth ministry events give students the chance to collaborate and experience a sense of belonging in a diverse and hope-filled community. “Our youth ministry events are just one of the ways we encourage students to become engaged and successful learners. During youth ministry workshops, students join with their peers from across the Diocese to draw on the life-giving traditions and spirituality of the Catholic faith in a nurturing environment,” she said. In 2019, five youth ministry events were held. Conversations with the Bishop Newly elected College Captains from all seven secondary schools came together to dialogue around what it means to be a leader in the uniquely Catholic community that is their school. This opportunity helps the Captains to form meaningful connections with their peers and create contacts that may be called upon during their year of leading the student body at their school. The highlight of the day is the opportunity to be involved in an open dialogue and sharing session with Bishop Pat. Youth ministry celebration More than 200 students gathered during Catholic Education Week to share their faith through art, music, drama and other creative presentation methods. Senior students planned and delivered a series of workshops, creating an innovative, peer-led learning and teaching environment, with qualified educators providing support and guidance.

Social Justice Learning Day Throughout the inaugural Social Justice Learning Day, students in Years 8 to 10 learned about raising awareness for social justice issues, and creative techniques to help those in need. Australian Catholic Youth Festival A pilgrim group of 11 teachers and 33 students from Diocesan schools joined 5000 Catholic youth from around Australia at the Australian Catholic Youth Festival in Perth. ‘Developing the skills today to thrive in tomorrow’s world’
Your child’s transition to school STARTING school is a big step for you and your child. It can be both challenging and exciting. As families, the support you give your child is important because you are your child’s first and most important teacher. Tips for transition Below are some tips on how you can help your child have a positive start to school. The year before school ■ Ask your child what they think about starting school. ■ Encourage your child to ask questions about going to school. ■ Help your child stay healthy. Make sure they have regular health and dental checks and keep immunisations up to date. ■ Encourage your child to try to do things on their own such as dressing, going to the toilet, washing their hands, unwrapping their food and opening and closing their drink bottle. ■ Talk to friends and other families about what school is like. ■ Attend transition-to-school programs and activities at your child’s early years service and school. ■ Talk to your child’s early childhood educator about things you can do at home to help your child’s learning and development. ■ Talk to the school about how you can engage in your child’s learning and development at school. ■ Ask the school what time your child starts on the first day and where to take them. ■ During the summer holidays ■ Show your child where the school is and talk about how you will get there. ■ Arrange play-times with other families whose children will be going to the same school as your child. It helps if your child knows another child at their school at the start of prep. ■ Practise the things your child will need to do to get ready for school (e.g. putting things in their bag, remembering to take a hat). ■ Confirm your before or after school care arrangements. Show your child where the outside school hours care facilities are and talk about how they will get there.

Be positive about starting school and enjoy your child’s excitement. ■ Visit your local library and read books with your child about starting school. The first day of school ■ Make sure your child knows who will take them to school and pick them up on the first day. ■ Help your child to organise their clothes, hat, shoes and socks the night before. ■ Help your child to pack their school bag with a snack, drink, lunch and a hat. ■ Place a spare pair of underpants and a change of clothes in a plastic bag. Let your child know these clothes are in their bag in case of any accidents at school. ■ Put sunscreen on your child in the morning if it is needed. ■ Show your child where you will meet them at the end of the school day. ■ At the end of the day talk to your child about what happened at school. The first year of school ■ Find out about what your child is learning at school. By doing this, you can support your child’s learning and find out how your child is adjusting to school. ■ If your child is having difficulty at school, talk to their teacher. Your child can also say what they think might help them. ■ Keep talking to your child about school. Ask them about their new experiences, what they like and what they find hard. ■ If your child attends an outside school hours care service, find a way of sharing your child’s school progress with the staff. ■ Share feedback about your child’s experience of starting school with the school and early childhood service. ■ Organise time for your child and their new friends to play together outside of school. Local early childhood services and schools will organise their own transition-to-school programs and activities each year. To find out more, talk to your child’s early childhood educator or contact the school where your child is enrolled. ■

Importance of effective primary learning CHILDREN learn an amazing amount as their learning journey continues through primary school. Primary school education continues in Years 1 to 6 where children receive a strong foundation in eight core subject areas: ■ English ■ Mathematics ■ Science ■ society and environment ■ technology and enterprise ■ languages ■ the arts ■ health and physical education. Literacy and numeracy are important learning areas. Learning focuses on ensuring your children understand mathematics, and learn to read and write competently. Many schools have specialist literacy and numeracy teachers to help your children develop these important skills. Programs are designed to build natural curiosity and foster inquiring minds in the area of science and technology. In society and environment, they learn about the history and traditions at the heart of Australia’s democratic society. Teachers plan for a balance of activities based on the learning needs of your children and other children in their class. In some instances specialist teachers teach the class, for example in art, music and physical education. The classroom layout is more formal than Preprimary with students sitting together in groups or rows. Your children spend more time working at their desk and in small groups. Set days and times are allocated to each subject area. If your children are having difficulty with any of the learning, speak with their teacher. Homework and study Homework reinforces and supports the things your children learn at school. It is designed to get your children thinking and applying what they learn in different ways and encourages them to become independent learners. During the first years of primary school homework involves fun activities such as:

reading with your children every day encouraging your children to draw, write and tell stories ■ practising using numbers ■ encouraging your children to observe things in nature and to ask questions. As your children progress through school, they receive specific tasks and projects designed to apply their knowledge in different ways - for example creative writing, oral presentations and assignments. You can help your children by: ■ setting aside a set time each day for homework (also allow time for play and relaxation) ■ setting up a ‘homework space’ where your children can do their homework ■ setting up a schedule for big projects that take longer to complete so they are not left with one day to finish it ■ letting your children have a go at their homework first before helping them ■ asking your children to explain what they have done - explaining things in their own words is a great way to learn ■ checking your children’s homework when they are done for the day and working through any errors together ■ knowing where your children are up to with their homework so they do not fall behind. If your children are having problems with their homework or with a specific subject or project, ask their teacher to spend some extra time helping them through the task. Talk with your children’s teacher about the school’s homework policy for more details. Ref: http://www.education.vic.gov.au ■ ■

“...two educators I admire told me about a public elementary school that I simply must visit. One of these colleagues, a big thinker in school reform, said that this just may be his “favourite school on the planet.” A little web research, a few email exchanges, and a long flight later, I was on my way to Wooranna Park Primary School.” Suzie Boss, Edutopia, George Lucas Foundation “Wooranna Park is an institution that we not only idolize but also hope to emulate in our efforts at revolutionizing education in India.” Parmeet Shah, Bio for Ray Trotter: Ray is principal of Wooranna Park Primary School in Dandenong North, Victoria. He is a firm believer that if young children are to maximize their learning, then schools must be a place of optimism, excitement and challenge. In 2007 Ray was the co-recipient of Monash University’s ‘Jeff Northfield Memorial Award for Excellence in Research’ and in 2009 Deakin University named their flexible learning centre after him. Ray’s qualifications include: FACE, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education and Trained Primary Teachers Certificate.
