Probus club growth spurt ROTARY clubs, focused on holding their own membership, don’t often set up new Probus clubs. Rotary started the Probus movement in 1976 for retirees who want to make friends and keep active rather than do charity work. With the bulge of baby-boomer retirements, there’s now plenty of potential for new Probus clubs. A champion creator of Probus clubs is retired electrical engineer Robert Renshaw, of D9810’s Glen Waverley Rotary (about 60 members) in south-east Melbourne. Since 2016 he’s helped set up 11 new Probus clubs. Glen Waverley Rotary, in District 9810, has a long history with Probus. In 2002 it ran an “interest meeting” for a new Probus club and got 200 applicants - so it started two Probus clubs at once. Members at the Syndal Combined Probus and Wheelers Hill Combined Probus have since grown to 300. Robert straddles the Rotary and Probus worlds. He’s been 47 years in four Rotary Clubs, is District 9810’s Probus Chairman, is Syndal Probus’s foundation president (and after 17 years, immediate past president), and was a Probus national director from 2016 to 2018. Wearing multiple hats, he helped start these Victorian Probus clubs: 2016 - Glen Waverley (140 current members) Rotary sponsor Glen Waverley; Croydon Park (140) sponsor Boronia Rotary. 2018 - Wantirna South (70 members)
Proposed new clubs in the pipeline are Warragul, Sale, Mornington Beach and Rosanna. “We scan census and suburb data looking for big groups of retirees,” Robert explains. “Probus South Pacific suggests four per cent of retirees in an area would support a club but I work on three per cent. Clubs typically start with about 30 members and grow by word of mouth. “The challenges in starting a club are effective marketing of the initial meeting and finding a right-sized but low-cost venue. “Commercial venues often charge too much. City council facilities work well - there’s about eight Probus clubs all meeting at Monash City Council. “We’ve got 18 Probus clubs in the Monash City zone, but a decade ago we had 26. Some clubs start with 60-year-old but don’ t keep recruiting. Members get old, don’t join the committee and scale back activities until the club folds. “Some Rotarians see Probus as a competitor. That’s silly. They cater for different markets. Help from Rotary clubs can revive Probus clubs and Probus people’s adult kids can be Rotary recruits.”

Getting clubs started - at 86! THERE’S a surprising story behind the successful launch of Armadale Probus by Malvern Rotary in February. There were 90 at the launch meeting and 39 active retirees signed up straight away. The grunt work involved saturating the district with 6000 flyers. This effort was led by Bruce Cameron of Keilor East Rotary, who turns 87 in September. His wife Lois is not far behind. They tramped the streets letterboxing 1500 flyers each over two days. Their daughter Julie Loft and son-in-law Robert Loft also did 1500 each. “I think that job will be my last Probus launch,” says Bruce - he’s previously launched 10 Probus clubs. “My ability to walk vast distances and deliver these flyers is getting limited.” He’s kept fit for years doing 4km walks twice a week. Other Probus Clubs he’s started include Keilor East (2013), Sanctuary Lakes-Pt. Cook (2014), now with 120 members; Taylors Lakes (2013); MaribyrnongRiverside (2014), and Avondale Heights (2016). In 2012 he was President of Keilor Probus. It capped members at 80 with a waiting list of 35. He was sure there was room for another club. His recruited 90 people at the launch meeting, and today Keilor East Probus has 201 members, with 170 at a typical meeting. They operate from an air-conditioned

marquee at the rear of the historic Keilor Hotel, which dates from Cobb & Co. days. Bruce rejects that large clubs create anonymity. “We can offer sub-groups things to do of every kind every day of the week,” he says. “If some suggests wine appreciation , we can probably get 10-15 starters straight off.” The committee delegates out its workload. Four people work on organising local and overseas tours, each taking on a specific event. One group is just back from Kangaroo Island and another plans a NZ tour. Bruce also finds no problem with the typical majority of women members. “It makes no difference on activities. In the walking group most of the 35 are women but we all join in harmony. We’re happy that the club has not involved cliques - people have ample potential friends.” The club also takes care to offer economical activities, as some members live on the pension. The club is subsidising some events to get its cash balance down to $12,000 from a somewhat excessive $22,000. Bruce was national Probus treasurer in 2014 and vice-chair in 2015. Rotary and Probus have been just part of Bruce’s activity. He chaired creation of Holloway Aged Care, now with 70 residents, and got a primary school built in Arnhem Land for the Donydji people. Hoppers Crossing win THE Hoppers Crossing Probus club, skipped by John Robertson, performed a clean sweep of games in the annual Werribee Probus Club tournament held in honour of a foundation member Harry Kirkland and sponsored by Werribee Funerals. John’s team won the three games contested by 52 shots and John praised the efforts of his team mates Greg Grima,
Graham King and Trevor Dean in the professional way they played against top teams from around the west. Runners up was last year’s winners Ocean Grove and the Werribee team of Chuck parker, Peter Davies, Joe Zufich and Paul Itter were the best third game winners. The tournament has been going for over 20 years and is recognised as one of the best in the state.
Probus is a non-profit organisation, initiated by Rotary, set up to help retired people to partly fill any voids in their life after retirement. Activities include group lunches, weekday bowls, day trips and prominent guest speakers at their monthly meetings at the Werribee bowls club which are held on the fourth Monday of each month. What a start to our 2020 with this horrible coronavirus hitting our shores. My message to you all is to do all you can to avoid catching it. Do as the Prime Minister says and, being the older folk, stay at home with as least physical contact as possible. Start using our phones to keep in touch and maybe even sit down and write a letter to someone you have not seen for a while. God Willing this will pass and we will once again be able to enjoy all the fun and fellowship again. I am just so pleased that 38 of us went to see Monsalvat recently on a perfect Melbourne autumn day and had a great day so we now have that as a happy memory. I am intending to make a list of what needs to be done around my home and mark them off as they are done. I should remind you all that if your annual subscription is due do not forget to pay it because the club will still be having expenses to pay. Supporting regions in need Armchair Travel Sue Grady AS we all know our country has been ravaged by devastating bushfires, fuelled by record-breaking temperatures and months of severe drought, the likes of which our nation has never seen. Not only do we get to see our furry friends up close but visit some of the amazing attractions within the region. Victor Harbour and Kangaroo Island provides an opportunity to support another of our fire affected regions with the focus on the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park. The wildlife park has started a
fundraiser for care, pain relief, medication and the infrastructure needed to house the large number of koalas and animals coming into their care. This park is home to over 150 native species and over 600 animals. This tour also takes in an amazing wildlife cruise along the Coorong NP. On KI taste local honey and Kangaroo Island spirits, visit Seal Bay, Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery and Emu Bay Lavender Farm plus more. Gippsland Lakes and Sapphire Coast regions also hit hard are in much need of support. With our local guide we pass through the fire ravaged regions of Sarsfield and Buchan taking in the now iconic Buchan
Race Track Winning Post and Buchan Caves Hotel. While in the Gippsland Lakes region we also visit Buchan Caves and enjoy a delightful winery lunch cruise. It is well documented how the folk of Mallacoota became totally isolated and under siege from the New Year bushfires and then the dramatic Navy Sea rescue that followed. Share their story while having lunch at the Mallacoota Hotel then hear from Annette Peisley, caretaker of the “former� Genoa Schoolhouse Museum which was burnt to the ground. From Eden, Merimbula, Mogo and Batemans Bay we will be confronted with similar stories. The coast still provides
some wonderful experiences such as cruises on Twofold Bay at Eden & Clyde River up at Batemans Bay plus lots more. Our journey to the Sunshine Coast supports Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors and Wildlife Hospital. The hospital is a major project of Wildlife Warriors and provides sick, injured and orphaned wildlife with leading-edge treatment and rehabilitation before eventual release back to the wild. We also get to take in the amazing Eumundi Markets, Montville Village, Australia Zoo and Wildlife Hospital, Sea Life Aquarium, Bee Gees Way and enjoy an Everglades Eco Safari Cruise plus more. Our last tour to Canberra and the Snowy Mountains Regions, supports their communities plus the LAOKO (Looking after our Kosciuszko orphans), responsible for ensuring the well-being of all the native wildlife within the Snowies and Monaro region. Dolphin tour recommended A visit to the Dolphin Research Institute is highly recommended by the Knoxfield Ladies Probus Club. We thoroughly enjoyed the interesting and enlightening talk given by the Executive Jeff Weir OAM at their Western Port Marina, Hastings headquarters. We were also treated to a beautiful, colourful film of Victoria’s Western Port Bay and Port Phillip Bay showing the wonderful range of animals, birds and marine creatures living right on our doorstep. Jeff explained the work being done by the “i sea i care” ambassadors (around 6000 over 19 years), young scientists, schools (both primary and secondary), and a wide cross section of the community as well as staff, voluntary directors, volunteers, interns, partners and supporters. The institute is a Victorian leading conservation charity, working to empower the community to care for our dolphins, whales and bays through research, education and leadership. We watched film of the group of common dolphins that entered Port Phillip Bay in 2006 and stayed, bottlenose dolphins and visiting whales. We also learned of the challenges of coastal pollution, climate change and the importance of following the rules of not approaching dolphins when we are on the water. Let them approach you, and if safe to do so, stop and watch. Value and appreciate our remarkable marine treasures. We were most impressed by the passion Jeff clearly has for our wonderful bays and their precious marine inhabitants. If you care to learn more - www. dolphinresearch.org.au. We then travelled to the Tyabb Packing House Antiques and Village for lunch either at the Little Pig Cafe or the Rattling Red (train) Cafe. We then wandered amongst all the treasures and wares on offer. Yes, there were goodies being purchased. Two days later we attended the Ferntree Gully 1812 Theatre for “On Golden Pond” which was as usual, well presented and humorous with insights into “old” age. Most enjoyable. We have been looking forward to more delightful outings, but with the current virus crisis, we may have to delay for a while. - Bev Bishop

Special day for Heathmont THE Heathmont Ladies Probus Club has had a marvellous time celebrating their 30th birthday. Many founding members were there in their finery and pearls, and nine of the Margarets in the club, gathered for a photo, to link 30th anniversary, pearls and the name Margaret together. The venue, Potters Receptions, at Warrandyte was an ideal location, and served up a scrumptious meal. The entertainment stopped all chatter for 45 minutes, only broken when â&#x20AC;&#x153;Blue Tangoâ&#x20AC;? invited us to sing along to some of the old tunes. The ladies enjoyed the special day and can now look forward to another year of fun, friendship and fellowship in Probus.

A late afternoon visit to Wannon Falls and dinner at our Hamilton Motel accommodation, the Bandicoot Motel, rounded off another entertaining day. Day 5. Soon after breakfast we were on the road again and visited the Dunkeld Arboretum and lake. This Arboretum was an excellent local initiative and included an ancient sawmill, a 2 km walking tracking track amongst waterways, and a large collection of trees and shrubs. All with expansive background views of the southern end of the Grampians.

The jetty at Beachport. After morning tea at Halls Gap, we arrived at Ararat for lunch followed by a guided tour of the Gum San Chinese Cultural Centre. Here we saw an excellent video presentation followed by displays depicting conditions the Chinese encountered during their overland trek and their life in the Victorian goldfields. We then travelled on to our accommodation at the Mercure Ballarat Hotel which is situated very close to Sovereign Hill. After a lovely evening meal at the hotel we experienced the updated Southern Cross Sound and Light Show.

This new version was opened about 12 months ago and was ‘high tech’ and well presented. The presentation is in 3 different ‘theatres’ with modern ‘train transport’ between venues and back to the visitor centre starting point. Day 6 consisted of breakfast at the hotel before boarding the 11am train back to Melbourne. IN mid-February a group of 14 from Syndal Combined Probus enjoyed an excellent six day tour - firstly from Melbourne to Warrnambool and onto Robe. From there the tour followed the route taken by the Chinese Miners who trekked from Robe, overland to the Victorian Goldfields through Hamilton Ararat and onto Ballarat and beyond. This tour was with Southwest Explorer (Bob Scarborough) from Warrnambool. Day one was the V-Line train trip from Southern Cross to Warrnambool where Bob met the group and transported us to our very comfortable Motel accommodation at the Atwood/Eight Spence Motel. That evening we enjoyed a tasty and well priced evening meal at Macy’s bistro. Day two was a travel day with morning tea at Mt Gambier and lunch at the picturesque seaside township of Beachport - originally a whaling station in the 1830s. Following lunch we had some free time to walk around this small holiday township and, for some, a walk along the 770m long jetty that stretches out into the southern ocean. Originally the jetty was 1200m in length. We then continued on to Robe, checked into our accommodation at the Robetown Motor Inn and dined at the historic Robe Hotel. Robe has a long history and became one of the most important ports on Australia’s southern coast, serving a large hinterland stretching into Western Australia. In the 1850s, Chinese immigrants numbering in the 10s of thousands landed in the bay and made their way to the Victorian goldfields, as part of one of the most remarkable treks in Australian history - nearly 500km in 30 days carrying all their worldly goods.The reason they travelled via Robe was due to a tax of £10 per head that was placed on all Chinese landing at ports in Victoria. Day three was a relaxing morning in Robe Township where visits were made to various historical buildings, the cemetery, historical goal site, Obelisk and Lighthouse precinct, Chinese Memorial, Custom House, and the early sea voyage monument and wall. After lunch we travelled to Kingstonthe crayfish capital of SA, the newly built Jaffa marina, and the Cape Jaffa winery for some tastings and purchases. In the evening we dined at a local Chinese restaurant in Robe. Day 4- After breakfast we travelled west toward Hamilton via Casterton, Coleraine and the Glenelg chocolate factory. Following our arrival in Hamilton and a café lunch, we visited the excellent Sir Reginald Ansett Transport museum which contained a lot of memorabilia for all of us and included a

Club honour for Jacqueline THE Kerang Probus Club held its AGM recently and it’s status quo for the committee. The club did, however, award a life membership to Jacqueline Hibbert. Jacqueline is actively involved in many community organisations in Kerang. In respect of Probus Jacqueline held the position of secretary for seven years; the position of president for two years and for the past three years has taken on the role of welfare within the club, ensuring those who are unwell receive cards and a friendly visit. Jacqueline also acknowledges significant birthdays along with condolences from the club when necessary. On presentation of the award Jacqueline was extremely surprised and humbled - and also ’lost for words’, which is unlike her.

Trafalgar club is thriving THE Trafalgar and District Probus Club has continued to successfully fill all positions on the committee and supporting roles to keep the club vibrant and growing. It added 11 new members this year and continued to maintain just over 100 members. The past year’s activities have been regular and enjoyable under the guidance of President Bob Jones and the club looks forward to new president Carol Achterdenbosch continuing to add to the vibrancy and growth. The bus trips have included visits to Prom Cheese and the State Coal Mine at Wonthaggi, Monash University Synchroton, TAA Museum, Alowyn Gardens and the Tyabb Packing House, and stage shows Come from Away, War Horse and Chicago to name a few. With monthly dine outs, Christmas in July and December, a walking group, caravan/cabin holidays and a great range of guest speakers, have all added to a very successful year. The club has 20 committee and office bearer positions and photo shows their smiling faces. MaffraĂ s awesome foursome MAFFRA Ladies Probus Club has honoured four members with life membership. President Kathleen Pleydell congratulated Nan Sargood - 32 years; Thea Manson - 31 years; Deirdre Relph - 31 years; and Gladys Watts, 30 years of very intensive guidance to the club. Sixteen members and friends recently travelled to Margaret River in Western Australia. In the beginning of April the club hopes to do a five-day trip to The Great Ocean Road. Day trips to theatres in Melbourne; visits to Sale and Orbost birthday celebrations, and they have enjoyed very interesting and some amusing guest speakers throughout the year.

Good times, Clocktower style IF the antidote to feeling cut off, lonely, bored or stressed at this stage of life is Friendship, Fellowship and Fun, then Ringwood Clocktower is working hard at making that happen - and having a ball doing it! At the time of writing this we are all wondering how we will be able to keep on meeting together for the next little while, but this gives us something to look forward to when it’s all over. So, what will we be able to do? A great way to start a day is to join a group of ladies who find a good location to share breakfast together once a month. Getting to know others in this very friendly, relaxed setting is a great way for newbies to feel at home and for the longer-term members to welcome them. The quiet starts to our mornings generally end up rather noisy! Karalee is more interested in concentrating on her spectacular strawberry waffle! The competitive streak can appear at the most interesting times. A relaxing weekend away at a Caravan and Cabins event sounds perfect, but Finska can be deadly! It takes serious concentration, good eye-hand coordination and a lot of encouragement from the onlookers. MaryAnn’s team won! Plus, there is always someone around to ‘help’ when you are trying to dig out that difficult tent peg. Minute instructions are always welcome, of course. They are most freely given! Our travellers enjoy two trips each year, with activities organised for those who want to be active and see the surrounding countryside while others are happy to sit and drink coffee or a good wine and just enjoy the company. Sometimes we will have a longer excursion, to places like Mildura or Warrnambool, and members can come and go as it suits them. Day outings can take us in all sorts of directions, from the cultural to the sea, to the bush and to the historic. By car, train or bus, whatever it takes. The Terracotta Warriors was a fantastic exhibition which we really appreciated, especially with the headphones to hear all about them. They were incredibly and intricately created and decorated. A great day out. For the academically minded, or those who simply want a more sedentary gettogether, there are the Book Groups. It is a bit questionable how much discussion is about the book and how much is serious ponderings about current affairs and other such goings-on! However, the participants never want to miss a session, so something must be working well. And in the meantime, while we wait, what could be better than a picnic in the park? All that is needed is a folding chair, a thermos, some nibbles, a book or a camera, and a lot of lovely fresh air!

Great day around the Bay FORTY five Glen Waverley Combined Probus Club members met in the car park of the Burvale Hotel on Tuesday 29 October to board the coach for our “Around the Bay in a Day” trip. We couldn’t have wished for a better day weather-wise. Our tour guide Belinda and coach driver Sam welcomed us on board and we pulled out of the carpark on schedule at 8:30am. We headed down East Link/Peninsula Link/Morningon Peninsula Freeway to Sorrento - it was nice to sit back and enjoy the sights for a change while someone else did the driving. After a quick drive around the shopping precinct, we then drove to a nice seaside parking area where we gathered around in the sun, admiring the views and having a nice morning tea provided by our guide and driver. Then it was back on the coach for the short trip to the Sorrento pier to catch the 11 am ferry across the bay to Queenscliff. The coach drove on board the ferry and we all hopped off and went upstairs to the passenger lounge or the upper observation deck. Everyone was greatly pleased when a group of four dolphins decided to accompany us for part of the way switching from side to side of the ferry a couple of times, and leaping out of the water occasionally. Shortly before arrival at Queenscliff we all went back down and hopped on the coach which was first off when we docked. It was then a short drive to the Queenscliff Bowling/Tennis/Croquet Club where we had a nice leisurely two-course lunch while enjoying the lovely views over the water. Back on the coach after lunch for a short drive to the Queenscliff station of the Bellarine Railway. Time for a group photo (what a happy bunch!). All aboard again for the old railway style train trip to Drysdale station. The train travelled at a relatively slow pace and we were able to admire the scenery along the way. On arrival at Drysdale station our coach was already waiting for us, having beaten us in travelling from Queenscliff. We all hopped on board for the last leg of our trip, arriving back at the Burvale Hotel carpark about 5.15pm. - Terry Norgate

Puffing Billy natter platter THE March outing for Blackburn South Combined Probus Club was on a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Natter Platterâ&#x20AC;? train trip on Puffing Billy. Twenty members travelled to Belgrave to board the train, with one member having been a volunteer with Puffing Billy for 40 years. On the outward journey you enjoy a selection of meats, biscuits, cheese etc., while on the return journey, scones with jam and cream are there for you to enjoy, together with coffee or tea. The train is a very popular tourist attraction, with four trains operating on the day of our trip. The engine on our train was manufactured in 1908 in the Victorian Railway Workshops which no longer exist, so that all maintenance on the train and carriages are now done by the Puffing Billy Society. The train trip is highly recommended to all Probus clubs.

Sad loss for Swan Hill Probus THE Swan Hill Probus Club recently lost life member Ian Sherriff, a true gentleman to the core who will be sorely missed. Ian was well versed on how things worked in Probus. Ian and his wife Val joined Swan Hill Probus in 2003, serving on the Bowls Committee 2004 to 2007, Management Committee 2005 to 2020, Tour Committee 2005 to 2015 and serving as President 2006 to 2008 and 2010 to 2012. Ian was a mentor and generous with his time and advice for all especially new members and new committee members. He was a well-known active and very much admired member of the Swan Hill and district community, involved in many
aspects of community life as a life member of the Koraleigh Fire Brigade, Tooleybuc Bowls Club and Murray Valley Bowling Association. Val Jeans, in her last official duty as president at the AGM, had the pleasure of presenting Brian Warren with a life membership of Swan Hill Probus. As members farewelled one life member, another was inducted. Brian Warren and his wife joined Swan Hill Probus in 2004. An enthusiastic and active member of the club, Brian became secretary in 2011 and continuing until 2019. Immediate past president Val Jeans presented and congratulated incoming president Brenda Grace.

Paynesville heads off to Yea and beyond... PAYNESVILLE Probus Club held its Annual Caravan Club tour during March, with a group of 28 members and friends travelling to Yea in central Victoria for one night then on to Moama in New South Wales for five nights and returning to Yea for a further two nights. Some of the members extended their tour for a few more days with a stopover in Garfield and extra days in Yea. Many optional activities were enjoyed by all,including a Murray River cruise, visits to the Holden Museum in Echuca, viewing the Painted Wall Murals in Tongala plus several morning stretching sessions led
by secretary Rob Kimm, trivia sessions organised by Ken and Loraine Lloyd and the infamous 20 cent game. Weekend afternoon entertainment was provided by a group of girls enjoying a hens party in the caravan park. Lots of laughs, good fun and fellowship. As a result of the Government directive regarding the Covid-19 pandemic, the club committee has passed a motion to postpone all club meetings including the March AGM, outings and social gatherings until further notice. Details will be conveyed to club members.

Welcoming new members THE Probus Club of White Hills commenced the 2020 year with an influx of new members who were inducted at the January meeting. In the absence of President Colin Watts (due to hip surgery) the Vice President Glenys Billings had the pleasing duty of inducting five ladies to the club. Genny Soto, Margaret Cloonan, Alison Lyall, Wendy Ryan and Bev Smith all received their membership badges, name badges and certificates of induction. These new members are from diverse backgrounds, all with differing interests and hobbies and from different fields of expertise. All the inductees were welcomed into the White Hills Probus Club and invited to join in the many activities offered by the PCOWH and to enjoy the company of ‘likeminded’ people in retirement. Many milestones have been celebrated over the past 12 months beginning in April 2019 with 25 year certificates to Lindsay and Joan Raeburn, Lois and Ray Monks, Janice Pearce, Joan Pederson, Ian and Jean Randall, Mary Pocock, Merle Lea and Frank Holland. THE Northern Victoria Spyder Ryders were guests of the Probus Club of White Hills at the February meeting when spokesman ‘Ian’ gave members and visitors an insight into the formation of their club and to the great journeys and adventures they have shared over the past two years. They have endeavoured to engage as many riders as possible in the northern regions of Victoria and the border areas of New South Wales to enjoy the social and community spirit of like-minded enthusiasts. There were seven Spyder Ryders present with their magnificent machines and all were willing to share their passion and enthusiasm with members as they took several for rides around the area. Some White Hills Probians re-lived their glory days as motor bike riders and were thrilled to go for a spin.

Hidden treasure under noses YES we found treasure and we didn’t need a pirate’s map. It is hidden in plain sight, in the Melbourne CBD - “Hellenic Museum”. On a smoke filled city in February a group from the East Malvern Combined Probus Club journeyed via public transport
to the museum on the corner of La Trobe and Williams street. Most people know this place as the Old Mint building. We had a guided tour lead by Evelyn who was very knowledgeable in ancient Mediterranean history. For two hours we listened and quizzed
Evelyn as she described the artefacts and the life of people of that period. Many members asked questions in relation to the items and the people of that time. We had a most enjoyable time at the museum and recommend it to other

A step back in time THERE was a grey sky in Melbourne when the East Malvern Probus group left Southern Cross Station for Bendigo and the Lost Trades Fair. The sky turned to blue as we crossed the Great Dividing Range and gave everyone on the journey a smile as the day promised to be a good one. Most of those in the group took advantage of the seniors free travel concession to purchase return tickets to and from Bendigo. They were met by the shuttle bus that took them to the racecourse where the fair was being held. A light breeze throughout the day made out the outing most pleasurable. Many trades including bootmakers, farriers, leadlighters, chandlers and weavers demonstrated their skills, making an impressive display. There was food and wine from the district to enjoy while sitting in shade listening to the music as various venues around the racecourse. Club members are already planning our next outing.

Insight into prison life IN January members of the Warragul Tarago Probus Club gathered for a Picnic In The Park at Civic Park - a very enjoyable social evening in congenial surroundings. A highlight of the monthly meetings continues to be the interesting guest speakers. In January, speakers were Rev Ian Whitehill and David Greer, members of Prison Fellowship International. They provided information on the prison system in Australia and spoke mainly about the Victorian scene, sharing interesting statistics like the fact that 50 per cent of inmates return to jail within two years and 80 per cent within five years. There are many who turn their lives around, often with the help of PFI. On Wednesday 26 February, 47 members boarded a coach and headed for an outing to Phillip Island and the Wildlife Coast Captain’s lunch cruise - boarding at Rhyll jetty and heading for Cape Woolamai under a grey and overcast sky. The captain’s commentary was informative and the granite cliffs and caves
awe-inspiring. Morning tea was enjoyed during the cruise and the group sailed back to San Remo in time to witness the pelicans being fed. Back on the boat, lunch was served on the way back to Rhyll jetty for the return journey to Warragul. Unfortunately, the weather was not what you would expect in February, but that didn't stop everyone enjoying the day. The club’s shares group continues to follow the volatile share market, meeting each month at The Courthouse. A new phantom portfolio is up and running. In January the walking group travelled to Rokeby Park and walked from Old Telegraph Road West along the rail trail, enjoying the bush surrounds and then later dining at the Neerim South Hotel.

A lot more petrol heads ON Wednesday 12 February, 36 Probus Club of Traralgon Combined members and friends ventured to Phillip Island to tour the Motor Racing Circuit, now owned by LinFox. The tour began in the information centre where they were treated to Devonshire scones with endless tea and coffee, and a tour of the centre looking at millions of dollars worth of memorabilia. The boys didn’t disappoint with their enthusiasm on showing off their skills on the simulated racing car game. There are now a few more ‘petrol heads’ in the club. The day proved to be more than just a ‘day out for the boys’. The women were equally enthralled with the circuit, and we were all thrilled to discover that the trials were on that day. What a privilege for us to witness speeds of up to 300km per hour as they came down the straight. Absolutely brilliant. The group was taken upstairs to the winner’s podium with birds eye views of the entire track, and also viewed the pitstop. Cars have to be travelling at a speed of 200km an hour before leaving the pitstop to rejoin the race. Noise factor was well worth it just for the sheer experience of being there, and even though none of us booked a joyride around the track. Valentino Rossi has described the track as ‘probably the most exciting stretch of fantastic track that will forever be close in my heart’, and Mark Skaife says that ‘Phillip Island is the best permanent motor racing circuit in Australia. I love its fast and flowing European style’. Wow. Mary then had us travelling to Trios at the Cranbourne Racecourse for a sumptuous lunch. Food envy for all of us. Yes. The meals were superb. A big thank you to Mary for organising such a wonderful experience for all of us, many who had never seen it before, and thank you to Graeme, our driver for a safe and enjoyable trip. A day to remember and leaving with a far greater appreciation and understanding of the importance of Motor Sport. - Shirley Walker

Picnic in the park for birthday WANTIRNA South Probus welcomed 2020 on a beautiful sunny day for a Picnic in the Park at the Arboretum closely followed by its first meeting for the year and also celebrated its second birthday. As the club has grown many new friendships have been made, adding much
enjoyment to the retirement years. The walking group has visited the Royal Botanic Gardens, Grants Picnic Ground at Kallista and, of course, always concludes with coffee and cake. Members have dined out at local restaurants, enjoyed the monthly morning tea at the Pancake Parlour
and occasionally manage to make it to the movies. Members recently enjoyed a visit to Coombe in the Yarra Valley with a tour of the gardens and scrumptious Devonshire tea. Other events coming up include outings to the Blue Lotus Water Gardens at Yarra Junction, Bayswater Arts Centre when

Wonderful trip to King Island OUR group of 12 from Monash Combined Probus Club arrived on King Island around 12.30pm after a 35 minute flight from Tullamarine and enjoyed a tasty lunch at a local cafe before briefly checking into our motel - the Island Breeze which would be our home for the next three nights. The remainder of the day was spent sightseeing around the township of Currie with a visit to the King Island Dairy to sample some of the island’s famous cheeses. The next day was a perfect day weatherwise with sunshine in abundance and warm temperatures and we spent the whole day exploring the north end of the island visiting a bird hide at Shag Lagoon and morning tea at an old school house, now a Community Centre, where we viewed and were able to buy some of the products on sale made out of the local kelp. We then drove to Quarantine Bay and onto our lunch stop at Meat Your Beef - the property run by Anna and her husband Tom who also run three other farms nearby. Here we enjoyed a magnificent meal of local beef homemade by Anna and we also watched as Tom hand fed some of his beef cattle. Following lunch we visited Penny’s Lagoon, a rare perched freshwater lake and Martha Lavinia Beach which has been voted one of the top 10 surf breaks in Australia as well as Disappointment Bay. Our final stop for the day was at Cape Wickham - site of the tallest granite lighthouse in the Southern Hemisphere and also the Cape Wickham Links Golf Course, one of Australia’s top ranking courses set on the edge of the spectacular rugged coastline. A real challenge for any golfer! Dinner was at one of the best restaurants on the Island - the Wild Harvest Restaurant. After dinner when it was dark we went and viewed the local penguin colony. On day three of the trip our sightseeing featured the south of the Island and we began with a visit to the King Island Kelp Industries where we learnt all about its harvesting, refining and what it is used for. Morning tea was in the Old Boat Shed looking out over Currie Harbour and then we drove across the Island to Naracoopa, often described as the Gold Coast of King Island, with lovely beaches. From there we drove further south to Grassy for lunch at the King Island Boat Club and then drove up onto the hill overlooking the township to view the huge open cut Scheelite Mine which is, due to the price of tungsten rising, soon to be re-opened. In the afternoon the rainy weather of the morning had disappeared and sunny conditions had returned and we enjoyed a splendid visit to the picturesque Seal Rock Lookout with spectacular views of the coastline and then enjoyed a walk to the Calcified Forest where we viewed the calcified root systems of an ancient forest. Our final meal of the trip in the evening was at Wild Harvest Restaurant at the local golf course in Currie where the seafood lovers were able to feast on the local crayfish! On our last day of the trip before driving to the airport to catch our flight home at 12.15pm we visited the King Island Historic Society Museum in the original home of the lighthouse keeper and his family and the oldest building of any significance remaining on King Island. Here we viewed many relics from the numerous shipwrecks that have occurred around the island over the years and many other memorabilia of a bygone era. We also were shown the original lens from the Wickham Lighthouse as well as relics and information of the Netherby, a ship that ran aground about two kilometres from the township of Currie in 1866. 26 The Victorian Probian Monday, 6 April, 2020

Do we really care enough these days? My Word Laurie Barber THE story has done the rounds so many times that it has joined the ranks of urban myths, although Barry Sturgess and Bill Birnbauer, who recorded it in their book The Journalist Who Laughed, would no doubt swear it really happened. THE story suggested a sub-editor in Brisbane, who found a decapitated mouse in a trap, wrapped up the creature and sent it to the composing room through the air chute, accompanied by a piece of copy paper with the words, in the correct style: “Mouse two, head to come”. The comps a few moments later sent back the message: “Too long, please cut tail”. Sub-editors had an exalted place under the old hot metal system. Former Sydney Morning Herald columnist Alan Peterson described the scene perfectly: “To those dedicated places of high concentration and hushed voices, where smoke hung like incense and even the scratching of pens seemed intrusive, reporters delivered their copy. The sub-editors, showing signs of great suffering, checked, rewrote, trimmed, muttered, fussed with headings and finally pronounced themselves as satisfied as they were ever likely to be with such unpromising raw material. As cadets we tiptoed in and out of their presence. We could neither stand the sight of blood nor muster the nerve to discourse with the doctors in the temple.”
In those early days, although the opportunities for mistakes were there, the checks and balances were many. Proof readers, in particular, held important positions. Rarely would the devoted reader of the country newspaper question the qualifications of the proof reader, the person who ensured that the finished product was as the journalist wanted it and who in reality saved many a journalist from embarrassment. A problem was that many journalists, no doubt with a good nose for news, produced what could only be described as sloppy material, relying on “someone else” to put the words together in some acceptable order. Gary Ruddick in his book The Local Rag commented on proof readers: “They’ve very often got more ‘literary’ or grammatical ability and knowledge than their more highly paid journalistic brethren, and what’s more they can spell.” Now that the grand vision of computerised production has arrived, we have to acknowledge that, at least in many country newspapers, many of the checks and balances have been removed. Proof readers are rare and in many cases the sub, or copy editor, is also the compositor, making up entire pages in a never-ending line of speedy production. The opportunities to check that obscure spelling, the typographical error or the date of some significant event have been reduced in a system that cries out “let’s get this page out without delay”. As for spelling and grammar, does our society really care?

MOST pet owners do a great job of looking after their pets physical needs keeping them warm or cool, feeding them well and making sure they get plenty of exercise. But did you know you also need to look after your pet’s mental health? All animals need enrichment, and there are many different ways to provide it. Importantly, this can help prevent your companion from digging holes, shredding curtains or knocking over vases. Your local vet can also offer some great ideas tailored to your specific pet’s needs, but here’s some to get you started. Dogs Dogs are social animals that enjoy spending time with humans and other dogs. Always make time in your day to hang out with your canine friend, even just allowing them to sleep near you while you watch TV is a rewarding social interaction for your dog. If they have a doggy friend, let them get together a few times a week for a play session - or take them to a designated offleash area to help them meet a new friend. Most dogs are food motivated and enjoy food balls with hidden snacks they have to work to find. If your dog is really switched on and likes to work for their food you can try a puzzle game where they need to move things around with their nose or paw to get the treat. Cats Cats of all ages especially love chasing things, so an old fashioned piece of string can offer a simple way for you to engage with them. If you have more space, you can get a cat-sized “hamster wheel” for them to exercise on, or large towers for them to climb and explore. Additionally, there are now a range of puzzles and activities available which are specifically designed for entertaining cats. They often involve pushing a ball around a designated path, or other similar activity. The advantage of this type of cat toy is your cat will enjoy playing even when you are out of the house.

No matter what type of pet you have there are a number of ways to keep them mentally engaged. Ensuring your pet has an environment where they can play, explore and learn helps to keep them healthy.
