“People were driving to the house just to pick up a bag and drive it from Kilsyth to Dandenong just because they wanted to make sure the food got to someone that needed it.” But as the information about the initiative spread, the demand became too much for Ms Reardon to cater for on her own. She sent an email to her manager at Cire Services and they organised for her to set up in the Chirnside Park Community Hub, which is run by Cire. Since then, a group of community service students and other volunteers have also pitched in to help cook meals. They have been cooking for people recovering from surgeries and sent straight into self-isolation, parents juggling hospital visits, the elderly, large families who are stretched too thin to stock-pile, those who are immunocomprimised, those who lack transport and

those with disability. Community Hub manager Jenelle Strachan said the decision to open up their kitchen doors was a “no brainer.” “It’s fantastic I mean we’re here to support the community and the fact that we can do something amazing and help people here is great,” she said. Ms Reardon said she has been overwhelmed by the amount of community support since she first posted the idea online. “We have a pensioner, 70 years old, disabled and desperately in need of some food but insisting on giving us some rice back in return that she has in her pantry because she wants to contribute in the way that she can,” she said. “This was just me in my kitchen and it couldn’t have gone as far as it has if I didn’t have that support because I couldn’t have

done that by myself. “I put this little post up and I’m still involved but I feel like the community has almost taken it over and made it theirs. “People just want to be involved, they want to be part of it. From my experience people always want to help.” Meanwhile Ms Strachan said the Community Hub will continue to support locals during the coronavirus crisis. “Get involved, the community hubs will be open through this crisis until we’re told we have to close,” she said. “We have a place for people to come so if they do want a little food hamper come in and see us. “We have a computer so if they need to go online and can’t do that at libraries anymore they can do it here.”

As stock-piling and stripped supermarket shelves continue amid the Covid-19 outbreak, a group of volunteers have come together to cook and deliver free meals for those in need across the Yarra Ranges. The group has set up in the Chirnside Park Community Hub and since being established, have been inundated with support and donations from the community. Cire Services’ Chrisi Reardon initiated the idea after seeing reports of people unable to get food and supplies due to panic buying. She began batch cooking and posted on social media to connect with people in need. “I was immediately overwhelmed by how many people needed help and also by how many people were so beautifully supportive,” she said.

Important COVID-19 Update from your local paper

How Locals Can Help Locals! Dear Readers, These are challenging times for our local community, as they are for all local communities around the world. Many of us are anxious, and unsure about many things, but one thing we know for certain is that we need to work together as a community to overcome the challenges this global pandemic has created. ISOLATE AND AVOID INFECTION The Coronavirus is first and foremost a health crisis, and keeping our community safe and healthy is the number one priority. Please follow the government protocols and do all you can to avoid infection. STAY INFORMED For 110 years, Star News Group, an independent family company, owner of this masthead has been the trusted source of local news, and we take our responsibility to inform the local community very seriously. For the latest government advice regarding COVID-19, see www.health.gov.au, and please beware that ‘news’ on social media is not regulated and many false and dangerous theories are being shared online. PLEASE BUY LOCAL This health crisis has caused an economic crisis, and we need to do all we can as a community to save local jobs, and livelihoods in the long term. The best thing we can do (in addition to staying well) is buying from local businesses whenever possible. Buying locally has an amazingly positive multiplier effect on the local community because your money keeps being reinvested by other local businesses and employees. This is critical to keeping locals in jobs. A NOTE TO OUR ADVERTISERS We understand these are very tough times for business – as we are also feeling the impact. We are ready to assist you to change your advertising copy to keep the local community updated about any changes to your business operations, safety protocols, new service delivery models, messages of thanks/ support or other important news. We are also in the process of developing programs for our loyal advertisers to assist through these tough times, and we look forward to working together to see this through. Our readership is up, as people seek trusted news in a crisis. THANKS TO OUR READERS We can’t thank you enough for your loyal support over that past 110 years, and we look forward to keeping you informed in the decades to come. Our journalists are doing an outstanding job, in very tough conditions, and by picking up the paper or subscribing online you are helping to ensure they keep us updated and informed. Thank you. Finally, they say character is revealed in a crisis, and our local community is once again rallying and showing great strength and resilience.

Social distance requirements due to Covid-19 couldn’t stop Emerald’s Hilda Gregson celebrating her 100th birthday on 24 March. Mrs Gregson celebrated reaching the big milestone at the Emerald Glades Nursing Home with her daughter Margaret Whiting and son-in-law Roy Whiting. Ms Whiting said that despite having to keep some distance it was still a “beautiful” day. “It was really nice, we went the day before and gave her the letter from the Queen, the Governor General and the local member,” Ms Whiting said. “She was a bit overwhelmed and she still can’t believe she is 100. “She had a ball, an absolute ball.” Mrs Gregson first moved to Australia from England when she was 2-years-old. She grew up in Brighton before moving to Emerald at about age 10. She attended Emerald Primary back when it was only two classes and stayed in the area for about four years. Mrs Gregson was the eldest of five children. Throughout her life she worked as a house cleaner then as a book worker at Ansett Australia airline group before getting married in 1944. Ms Whiting described her mother as a “stoic” and “incredible” woman who always puts others first. “She is always doing things for other people and if you saw her now she’s 100 and she’s helping people younger than us,” she said. “She’s like a mother hen. “I don’t think she ever had an enemy she would always put herself out for other people.” The grandmother of eight and great grandmother of 15 has lived through plenty of hardship, having grown up during the depression and losing her husband when she was about 70 years old. But Ms Whiting said her mother has always kept a positive outlook on life. Mrs Gregson has recently moved back to Emerald to be closer to Ms Whiting who also lives in the area.

18 cases in Yarra Ranges By Jed Lanyon At least 18 cases of Covid-19 within the Yarra Ranges Shire have been reported to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) as at Monday 30 March. Data obtained by Star Mail from DHHS has revealed 18 cases of the virus within the Yarra Ranges as well as seven cases in Cardinia. Latest figures by sex on Sunday 29 March showed 10 of the cases were from males, with five from females, aging from 15-69 years old. The DHHS figures report a total of 821 cases in Victoria, up from 769 a day earlier. The Department only provides information on local government areas (LGAs), so there is no current information to suggest exact suburbs that have been affected. The data relates to notifications received from medical practitioners and laboratories and does not necessarily reflect the true incidence of disease.

Instead, the message from the State Government has been blunt - practice social distancing and stay home where possible. “The message I want to reiterate with Victorians is that if you don’t need to be doing something, then don’t do it,” Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said.

“Please try and limit your day to day tasks outside your home ... this is the only way we’re going to slow the spread of coronavirus, this is the only way we’re going to flatten the curve to make sure our health system will cope. “We’re planning for the worst, we are hoping for the best.”

Minister Mikakos urged people to work from home where possible, but acknowledged that not every industry was in a position to do so. “If as a community, we all do the right thing and engage in strict social distancing, we can try and bring those numbers down,” she said. “We are prioritising saving people’s lives that is our absolute focus and if we all do the right thing ... then we can reduce the number of lives lost.” Victoria’s Chief Health Officer professor Brett Sutton said these were “unprecedented” times and the threat of coronavirus was “real”. “We urge everyone to stay 1.5 metres away from everyone else, wash your hands often with soap and water and cough or sneeze into a tissue or your elbow,” Prof Sutton said. For more information on coronavirus, call 1800 675 398 or visit https://www.dhhs.vic.gov. au/coronavirus.

Gembrook primary says goodbye to a crossing great By Romy Stephens Gembrook Primary School has said farewell to its much-loved crossing supervisor, Arthur Wintle. After manning the school’s crossing for the past nine years, Arthur has decided to put down his stop sign and enjoy retirement. Arthur’s career began as a secondary school teacher before he moved into building and then became a crossing supervisor in 2011. “I’ve absolutely loved it, it’s the best job I’ve ever had,” Arthur said. “The parents and the students and the staff are all friendly and that’s partly because of how I present myself.

The biggest change he has noticed in the region over his lifetime is the addition of more people. But those people are also what he loves most about the area. “I won’t miss some of the car drivers. A story of loss and love By Danielle Kutchel After experiencing the heartbreaking loss of her daughter, Michelle Elphinstone hopes to help others going through the same grief she felt. Michelle’s daughter Erin was tragically killed in an accident in May 2017 when her car went down a steep embankment along Belgrave-Gembrook Road in Cockatoo, just minutes from her home. The event devastated the close-knit family. Michelle said she tried counselling, but felt worse when she came out. She began to write down how she felt, including the good and the bad, never dreaming that her thoughts would eventually turn into a book. Now, she has self-published her words in ’Finding Erin...a true story of loss and love’, avaialble in both Australia and America. The book is aimed at other families going through a similar state of loss. “I want to say to them, ’you’re not alone’,“ Michelle said.

Writing down her family’s story was a cathartic process, Michelle said, allowing her to get the heartache out of her system. “Everything that was hurting inside, now I can fill with things I enjoy,“ she explained. As part of their healing process, the family hopes to create a retreat in Erin’s memory - a place of peace and enjoyment. They plan to use proceeds from the sale of the book to build the retreat. Michelle has also created a support group with both a physical and online presence for families suffering with the loss of a child. It’s fittingly named ERIN - Emotional Response in Need. “All these dreams are gone, so we have to make new ones,“ Michelle said of the group and the planned retreat. “It’s a tough journey, but we have a supportive family. “They key is to have support and love.“ Finding Erin is availabel from the Community House in Emerald, Emerald Village Newsagency, Elements in Gembrook and The Book Barn in Belgrave.

Emergency food relief on call for those in isolation Food and essential item packages are available for individuals who have no access to these items due to Covid-19. Packages will assist people who need to go into mandatory self-isolation, have little food available and have no network of family or friends to assist. The packages will provide two weeks of essential items including long-life milk, pasta, cereal, canned vegetables and sugar. Items like soap, toothpaste and deodorant will also be available to eligible households.

Gembrook MP Brad Battin said the packages will help those in need and also help limit the spread of Covid-19. “We need to ensure those who must self isolate do so, these packages will ensure those at risk of contracting the coronavirus can remain in isolation and have access to the essential items,” he said. “There are some in our community who are not fortunate enough to have a support network to assist them in times like this. These packages will ensure those in need will

not go without. “I ask all in the local community to safely check on your neighbours and those vulnerable in our community to see how you can assist.” Packages will be delivered to doors and will be coordinated by the Red Cross alongside Foodbank Victoria, under the direction of the State Relief Coordinator. Packages can be accessed via the Coronavirus Hotline on 1800 675 398. A hotline to help struggling businesses has

also been developed as the virus continues to impact the economy. The pandemic has created issues for businesses large and small who are facing a downturn in trade, bans on events, restrictions on indoor gatherings and challenges dealing with employee safety and entitlements. Businesses across the state can now access information on dealing with Covid-19 by calling the Business Victoria hotline on 13 22 15. Business operators can also find information at business.vic.gov.au.

Crime incidents up A rise in robberies, drug offences and harassment has seen a surge in Victoria’s crime rate, with 17,602 more incidents in 2019 than the previous 12 months. The Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) recently released the Victorian recorded crime statistics for the year ending December 31 2019, with reported crime across the Yarra Ranges increasing by 634 incidents in the 12 month period. Despite the increase, crime in the Yarra Ranges has increased at a much slower rate than other municipalities, with local government areas of Melbourne, Latrobe, Yarra, Mildura and Greater Shepparton all reporting

over 12,000 recorded criminal incidents compared to just 6,175 in the Yarra Ranges. Family violence records reached their highest on record across the state, with reports of 84,550 incidents or 1,281.9 incidents per 100,000 population. CSA Chief Statistician Fiona Dowsley said that “the number of family incidents recorded by Victoria Police has been increasing since the introduction of initiatives in 2011 such the Family Violence Code of Practice. In the last 12 months recorded offences with a family violence flag have increased by 7.4% to 100,128 offences.”

Offences that showed a significant downward trend in the last two years included transport regulation offences, disorderly and offensive conduct and dangerous and negligent acts endangering people. The Yarra Ranges will welcome eight new police officers over the next 12 months as part of a record regional policing increase set to begin in May. A further 20 officers will be shared between Maroondah, Knox and the Ranges, including six new Highway Patrol officers and 14 new members to the Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team.

Parks Victoria shuts down camping sites Parks Victoria has closed all designated campgrounds and accommodation throughout parks and reserves across Victoria from midnight on 25 March until further notice. Designated campgrounds are any sites that have infrastructure such as toilets, fire pits or barbecues. The decision from Parks Victoria came at the direction of the state’s Chief Health Officer. Parks Victoria CEO Matthew Jackson said existing bookings will be fully refunded and no further bookings will be taken. “Closing all designated campgrounds across Victoria for all overnight camping and accommodation will help protect the health and safety of visitors and staff,” he said. “We have a complete list of bookings and will provide full refunds as quickly as possible.” Parks Victoria advised that non-essential travel should be avoided, and any day visitors to parks and reserves should disperse widely and adhere to social distancing guidelines. All people currently camping in designated campgrounds are being requested to leave im-

mediately with rangers patrolling. Parks Victoria said compliance with this directive is enforceable under section 203 of the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008 and penalties apply. Other areas within parks will remain open to allow for exercise, however, social distancing must be practised and those with flu-like

symptoms must remain at home. Parks Victoria has arrangements in place to ensure business continuity, including ongoing urgent recovery efforts in bushfire-affected parks, essential maintenance and firefighting. For more information on affected visitor sites visit www.parks.vic.gov.au/COVID19.

Think before you flush Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) is urging Victorians to 'think before they flush', because of concerns that the use of products such as wet wipes, tissues or paper towels as alternatives for toilet paper could put pressure on the state's sewers and domestic wastewater systems. People should only flush the three P's down the toilet - Pee, Poo and toilet Paper. If Victorians don't have toilet paper to use, then the alternatives should be disposed of in the main household waste bin. Sewers are not designed to handle wet wipes, tissues and paper towels. They clump together forming slimy thick mounds commonly called 'fatbergs' which cause blockages or damage to infrastructure. This leads to sewer spills that impact on the environment and can create a public health issue. EPA Deputy Chief Environmental Scientist Dr Dan Evans said that while wet wipes might be marked as 'flushable' that doesn't guarantee that they will biodegrade and not cause pollution to our environment. "Sewer spills of wet wipes, litter, paper towels and tissues can get caught up in vegetation in drains and cause water quality issues," Dr Evans said. "An increase in water pollution can be potentially harmful to animals, birds, fish and other aquatic life, as well as causing odour." Members of the public can report all types of pollution by calling the EPA 24-hour hotline, on 1300 EPA VIC (1300 372 842).

Where to get a copy of your Star Mail Newspaper

Know your numbers On Wednesday 25 March, I was privileged to be part of a Casey Innovation Crowd webinar called “The Other Side“ which aimed to “provide critical updates and guidance for local businesses trying to manage the impact of the Covid-19 virus. This was a fantastic initiative since local businesses are surely facing their most serious challenges of recent times. Since attendance to the event was limited, what follows is a précis of some of the guidance provided for those who were not able to participate. There is no doubt that Covid-19 will have a deep and lasting impact on the way we do business going forward and whilst it is undoubtedly tough at the moment, as Benjamin Franklin said: “Out of adversity comes opportunity”. In tackling the problems that Covid-19 has imposed, we will find new ways of working, new ways of doing business and even new products and services not previously considered. But right now there are some serious issues to address immediately and since many businesses simply cannot function as they did previously and/or have clients that will be spending less, the bulk of the problems will be financial, so this is where we will focus first. People start businesses because they are good at what they do, not because they are good at business and for many the idea of managing financials is a foreign practice. However, now more than ever, it is important to

TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS IAN ASH ‘know your numbers’ and so undertaking the following is essential: 1. Determine your cash position. How much cash do you have access to? Be conservative about expected revenue (some may not pay) and analyse all outgoings. Review all expenditure and put off anything non-essential, see what can be deferred or delayed and hence calculate your cash position over the coming weeks. Even if it does not look pretty, you are far better off knowing the real situation rather than burying your head in the sand as this is stressful! 2. Set revised targets for sales, expenses and net profit and create a budget. You don’t need special software to do this (Excel will be fine) and you will then be in a position to forecast financials over the next few months. You need to include everything (i.e. every expense item) and if you use Xero, MYOB or Quickbooks, you can use the P&L summary reports from any of these tools as a basis for creating your budget till the end of this financial year and beyond. 3. Monitor your financial situation. Ordinar-

ily, you only need to spend approximately 30 minutes a month to keep on top of your financials, but under the current situation, I believe that fortnightly or even weekly might be necessary. Remember that ‘what gets measured, gets managed’. 4. Manage your expenses. If you create a budget as noted above, then you can then partition your budgeted expense items into 3 separate areas: a) Variable Expenses. These are typically ‘internal’ costs and vary by month (e.g. Postage & Stationery, Travel, Training etc) and over which you have most control so you should focus on minimising these first. b) Fixed Expenses. These are typically ‘external’ costs and don’t vary by month (e.g. rent, rates etc). Your ability to affect these quickly is low, so whilst it is worth seeing if you can get rent and rates relief, don’t expect any immediate relief here. c) Staff Costs (Wages & Salary, Superannuation, Payroll Tax). These are usually the biggest costs for a business so look to see if you can reduce hours, determine the need for casual staff and contractors, even see if everyone can take a pay cut to save jobs. Stay tuned for more advice on how to manage your business under these difficult times. - Ian Ash is Managing Director OrgMent Business Solutions - www.ombs.com.au - a member of the Emerald Business Group and the Rotary Club of Emerald.

Knee surgery not always the best fit

Since 2002 there has been an overwhelming amount of research and clinical evidence stating that exercise is the best first choice treatment for symptomatic knee meniscus injuries in people aged over 40 years. Arthroscopic surgery in middle aged patients with meniscal injuries has been compared to have similar results to sham surgery, whereby an incision is made and then sewn back up. However, the reduction in the rate of arthroscopic surgery has not been as pronounced as expected amongst middle-aged patients. One theory is that the perception continues amongst surgeons that they are better placed than the evidence to determine when surgery will be more beneficial to a patient than exercise, or non-operative management, alone. A recent study debunks this, or at least suggests that a surgeon’s opinion for these patients is as good as tossing a coin. The 2019 study, which includes in its authors Sydney orthopaedic surgeon Ian Harris, surveyed 194 surgeons who made 3880 predictions about whether surgery was the better option or not for a group of patients. The patients were from The Netherlands and Australia, all aged between 45-70 and had symptomatic meniscal tears. Patients with particular types of tears, such as ‘bucket handle’ tears, with knee locking symptoms and/or who have had failed previous surgeries were more likely to be offered surgery as a first line treatment option. However, the study showed that even experienced surgeons were accurate in predicting who will respond well to surgery or exercise therapy only around 50 per cent of the time; i.e. no better than chance. The conclusion that this study draws is the same as almost every study on arthroscopic meniscal surgery since the end of the previous century - that non-operative management is the best first-line treatment option for symptomatic meniscal knee injuries in middle-aged people. And this fits, given that meniscal tears in anyone aged over 40 are now thought to be secondary to osteoarthritis rather than the other way around. Thankfully we have the best first-line treatment option available in Australia, called the GLA:D for hip and knee OA program. This involves group classes 2-3 times weekly over at least six weeks plus two education sessions. GLA:D Australia is a not for profit entity who runs courses for Australian physiotherapists out of La Trobe University, based on the original GLA:D program developed in Denmark.

Hire a Hubby Upwey owners Richard and Beth have been servicing the local community for the past four years. From small jobs of installing new doors to full scale bathroom and kitchen renovations with everything in between, the couple have provided a friendly and reliable service to many in the hills. With the recent change in the world’s situation due to Covid-19, Beth and Richard have been vigilant in how they continue to provide services. “We have always been strict with our safety procedures in the past, we are now reassuring our customers that we are making sure we are compliant with regulations surrounding Covid-19,“ Richard said. The pair, along with all Hire a Hubby Franchisee’s across Australia, New Zealand and the UK, are all covered by insurance and their workmanship guarantee. Beth said they have all amped up their safety measures not just for themselves but for customers also. “The community have had enough upheaval in their lives over the recent weeks, we want them to rest assured we can still provide all of our services to them safely,“ she said. Beth said the local couples’ elderly customer base has been relieved to not only have Beth and Richard get them essentials but also being able to talk to Beth on the phone while they are in isolation. “Many of our customers are like our family,” Beth said. “We have quite a few who I check in on regularly as we know they are alone, but at the moment not being able to get out and about makes it even harder for them.”

Monbulk wins in thriller By Eric Markham Tuesday pennant saw Monbulk Bowls Club’s top team finish the season in third place, just one point behind Mulgrave, which meant they had to travel in the first game of the Division 1 finals. Monbulk started quickly and gained an early break on the overall board. Richard Cookson’s rink began well and led by six shots after three ends. They continued to bowl well and eventually won 25-13. Andrew Bell’s rink had a close tussle early and after 10 ends were one shot in front. They then gained a break and jumped to an eight shot lead after 13 ends. However, they soon hit a wall and lost the last eight ends to lose 22-16. Eric Markham’s rink played well up to the lunch break and led by seven shots after nine ends. They then increased this to nine shots after 14 ends and looked to be cruising to victory. Mulgrave played some attacking bowls winning the next five ends to lead by four shots and to be within two shots on the overall board. The Monbulk rink steadied and grabbed a three on the twentieth end and a shot on the last end to tie the rink, and ensure overall victory 63-57 and a place in the Grand Final. Monbulk then played MCC in the Grand Final at Heathmont in what turned out to be a thriller. MCC grabbed the ascendancy early and led by 13 shots at the lunch break. Monbulk lifted across all rinks picking up a number of multiples to reel in the lead and then race past MCC to win 68-55. Andrew Bell’s rink were a couple of shots down early, but by the break had levelled the scores.

Monbulk 1 Division 1 Grand Final winning team. They led by four shots with two ends to play but were unlucky having to settle for a tie, 16 shots all. Richard Cookson’s rink had a slow start and after nine ends trailed by 15 shots. They then won the next five ends to claw their way back into the game and were three shots down with seven ends to play.

The Monbulk rink won five of the last seven ends to tie 21 all. Eric Markham’s rink trailed by four shots after seven ends, but by the break were one shot in front. After 12 ends the scores were level, but the Monbulk rink then exploded grabbing two fives to jump out to a 10 shot lead.

Some excellent bowling from Margaret O’Brien and Craig Ward with Peter Koomen in brilliant form enabled the Monbulk rink to extend its lead winning 31-18. This meant Monbulk, who had won the Division 2 flag the year previous year, were now the Grand Final winners in Division 1.
