Feeding our city in crisis By Luke Voogt
Nicole Riddle. (Rebecca Hosking) 207301_06
Ms Riddle explained that the group had increased its operations ater some local charities were forced to close because of the pandemic – many of them had elderly volunteers who were at risk of catching coronavirus, while others lacked space to operate while maintaining social distancing. One Care had encouraged its elderly volunteers to stay at home but most of them were “young and healthy”, she said. Ms Riddle said she had taken precautions to protect herself, her two daughters and husband from the coronavirus but refused to “live in fear”. “I’m it and I’m healthy – I know I need to keep on doing this and that’s a risk I’m willing to take. he positive impact I can have far outweighs the risk.” For information about food programs during the pandemic visit: feedgeelong. org.au or onecaregeelong.org.au
(Rebecca Hosking) 207302_18
A Geelong West group is serving almost 10 times its normal number of meals to those in need, according to the program’s co-ordinator. “We’ve had to completely reshape everything that we’ve been doing,” One Care’s community meal co-ordinator Nicole Riddle said. “By the end of this week we will have done 1500 meals in the past two-and-a-half weeks. We normally do 70 a week.” he Hamlyn Heights mother-of-two and former teacher began working for One Care last year, running a community kitchen with disadvantaged people and a weekly community meal. But as the COVID-19 pandemic has forced several local charities to close, One Care’s core group of about 20 volunteers are running an extra community meal each week and ofering ‘pantry parcels’. Another 20 volunteers have signed up to deliver meals to those in need. One Care had also moved its cooking operations to a larger commercial kitchen at the ailiated OneHope Baptist Church to cope with demand, Ms Riddle said. he 37-year-old was in the middle of preparing another 120 meals when she spoke to the Independent on Tuesday. “It’s a crazy time at the moment,” she said. “I just had a lovely lady drop of homemade slices so we’re going to be distributing them today too.”
Egg-cellent fun still to be had Leo, 8, Piper, 3, and Patrick, 6, hopped into the Easter spirit on Monday by sampling some of Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie’s delicious creations. While the COVID-19 crisis has hit the business hard, forcing owners Ian and Leanne Neeland to lay off 65 “hardworking and devoted” staff, the business had adapted to ‘click and collect’ orders and deliveries during what would normally be its busiest time of the year. The chocolaterie was sending out more than 100 orders to “loyal customers” and many planned tour groups had “very kindly” accepted vouchers instead of refunds, Mrs Neeland said. “We’re just overwhelmed with their support.”

Local cases steady for 48 hours By Luke Voogt COVID-19 cases in both Geelong and the Surf Coast halted for two consecutive days. Conirmed coronavirus cases remained at 56 for Geelong and nine for the Surf Coast at the time the Independent went to press. It comes as a 12th person died in Victoria from contracting COVID-19. A woman in her 80s died in hospital on Tuesday night, the Department of Health and Human Services said. Cases in Victoria rose 21 to 1212 on Wednesday. Cases ranged in age from babies to
their early nineties. As of Tuesday, 93 conirmed cases may have been acquired through community transmission, another 673 were acquired through overseas travel and 414 through contact with a known source, while 11 were still under investigation, according to the department. More than 58,000 tests have been conducted statewide, to date. “Currently 47 people are in hospital – including 13 patients in intensive care – and 686 people have recovered,” the department said on Tuesday.
Victorian chief health oicer Professor Brett Sutton on Tuesday authorised changes that came into afect at midnight. Changes to restricted activities include: • Livestreaming of religious services is possible, however the services can only be attended by those people necessary to conduct and livestream the service. • Introduction of a truck stop provision exclusively for long haul drivers who can dine in a dedicated section, as long as the physical distancing four square metre rule is observed. Professor Sutton also amended current
stay-at-home directions for childcare arrangements. he changes allow parents or guardians to have another person come to their house to look ater their child while they are out, parents may also drop of their child at another person’s house to be looked ater, while out for: food and supplies, medical care and care giving, exercise, and work or education. Restrictions on visitors to hospitals have now also been expanded to cover residential care facilities for disability services, alcohol and drug services and secure welfare services. Ellie puts heart into ‘virtual’ tin rattle Like thousands of people across Victoria, Ellie Gibson is alive today because of surgeons at the Royal Children’s Hospital. “I wouldn’t have lived without them,” the Leopold teen said, ater celebrating her 14th birthday at home on Monday amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Ellie was born with a rare combination of four congenital defects, including a hole in the heart. Mum Libby remembers the day a cardiologist at the Royal Children’s Hospital told her Ellie, then six-days-old, would need open-heart surgery. “It was like someone winded me – it was the most horriic news,” she said.
“Ater that I didn’t hear very much. My mind went blank. “All I could remember was seeing this little baby … and thinking she might not survive.” Six months later, staf allowed Libby to hold Ellie as they put her to sleep before she put her life in their hands. Surgeons operated on Ellie for seven hours while she was hooked up to a heart-lung bypass machine, before restarting her tiny heart. Libby and husband Wayne rushed back when they heard the surgery was over. “Being a nurse myself I was semi-prepared for what I would see,” Libby said. “But nothing can prepare you for seeing your child hooked to tubes with machines and wires
everywhere.” Ellie is now an energetic and carefree teenager who loves tennis, ishing, and playing the lute and the guitar. “Obviously, I’m a bit biased but I think she’s pretty cool,” Libby said. With the COVID-19 pandemic preventing thousands of volunteers from hitting the streets for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal, organisers have set up a ‘virtual’ tin rattle online to help children such as Ellie. “Please donate and support the Royal Children’s – it saves kids like me,” Ellie said. Someone who purchased a lotto ticket in Geelong could be $613,000 richer without knowing it ater scoring division one at the weekend. he mystery ticket-holder was one of seven division one-winning entries nationally in TattsLotto’s Saturday night draw, each set to take home $613,016.67 he winner purchased the ticket at NewsXpress Armstrong Creek in he Village Warralily Shopping Centre. But the ticket was unregistered, so lotto oicials have no way of contacting the winner and have to wait for them to claim their prize. NewsXpress Armstrong Creek owner Wayne Davis hoped the winner would come forward soon. “We only opened the new store seven months ago, so we’re so happy to have sold a division one-winning entry already!” he exclaimed. “We’ve put balloons and signs up around the store to let everyone know we’ve sold a division one prize. “Our customers have been every excited for us and everyone is checking their tickets hoping they are our winner.” he Lott spokesperson Bronwyn Spencer said the mystery Geelong winner could be utterly unaware their winning entry was in their pocket, purse or stuck on the fridge. “If you purchased a TattsLotto ticket in draw 4039 from NewsXpress Armstrong Creek, there are over 613,000 reasons why you should check your ticket today,” she said. “Make sure you check your wallet, handbag, fridge door and car glovebox. Previous winners have found valuable tickets in all sorts of strange places.” Luke Voogt

Stranded Highton couple return By Luke Voogt As icebergs towered above David and Estelle Cameron, or they gazed at valleys covered in penguins, they had “no idea” the COVID-19 pandemic was rapidly worsening. he Highton couple sailed the Antarctic Ocean unaware the pandemic would leave them stranded for more than a fortnight when they returned. David, 70, and Estelle, 68, let Australia on February 28 when the government’s Smartraveller website warned only against travelling to China, then the coronavirus epicentre. hey embarked on their voyage aboard the Ocean Atlantic from Ushuaia, at the southern tip of Argentina, on March 2, a day before the country recorded its irst coronavirus case. Icebergs of every colour from “vivid blue” to “stark white” towered several metres above the ship on each side as they reached Antarctica, David said. “It’s a sight to behold. We’ve seen a few glaciers in our time but the amount and size of them was unreal.” he couple saw Minke whales regard them curiously and a leopard seal catching a penguin. David also remembered climbing a hill to see a valley that is home to hundreds of thousands of king penguins. he couple had little contact with the outside world except for internet so slow it took 20 minutes to download a single website, David said. “he irst time there was any inkling [something was wrong] is when we headed to the Falklands.” Falkland Islands authorities turned the Ocean Atlantic away on March 14 and the ship skipped Ushuaia where several vessels waited to dock, David said.

Argentinian authorities denied the ship entry two more times, forcing it to anchor between Buenos Aires and Montevideo, Uruguay, on March 19, along with about 20 other ships. hat day two passengers had a cold, sending the Ocean Atlantic into lockdown until the ship’s doctor cleared the pair of coronavirus two days later, David said. On March 24 the ship, clean of coronavirus, docked at Montevideo under 24-hour police guard, with passengers ordered to stay aboard.
“We had our temperatures taken twice every day. We ate all our meals in our cabins and tried to keep social distancing,” David said. he couple paid $13,000 for a chartered light, only to be given false hope multiple times. “he [lack of communication] was the annoying part,” David said. “he more it dragged out the more concerned we got, but we never lost faith that we would get home. We had each other and we were OK.” On April 1 they let the ship on buses under
a police escort to Montevideo airport. hey lew to Santiago, then Sydney, where the plane landed to applause from the passengers. Buses, again with a police escort, took them to a Sydney hotel where they are now in mandatory isolation. hey were keen to return home but David admitted his discovery of a brewery in their hotel would help ease the 14-day isolation. He thanked family, friends and all levels of government for helping them return safely.

COVID-19: Is your business ready We have entered a time of uncertainty and for many businesses, this next six months is going to be a tough slog. With social distancing, business shutdowns and government regulations tightening every day, it’s never been more important to make sure your business is prepared for the uncertainty of what lies ahead. Chris from Pace Advertising says the businesses that are going to weather this storm are those who are agile and can be creative with their product and service ofering – using the internet to their full advantage. “Already we are working with a number of businesses to change their service delivery from physical shop-fronts to an ‘online-only’ model,” Chris says. “In one case, we have just converted a traditional bricks and mortar retailer to being fully online and ofering a full delivery service. “In another, we have assisted with the roll-out of video conferencing and extending their in-oice phones to a mobile app. We have even organised for one company to accept deliveries when they are of site, with remote alarm functions, camera viewing and ability to open and close their warehouse door remotely. “For 90 per cent of businesses, there is a way to operate online-only, you just need to think creatively … and make sure you have the digital tools to support it.” hat’s where Pace comes in. “If you would like help or advice on how you can creativity pivot your business to an online model, get in contact with us via phone or email – we are here to help. “Stay safe … and look out for each other.” Pace Advertising, 6 Brougham Street, Geelong. As a company originating in he Great Depression, Pace Advertising has experienced war, market crashes, government sackings, recessions, hyper-inlation, terrorist threats, ires and loods. Director Nicholas Heath says COVID-19 isn’t the irst pandemic experienced by the business, having endured the Hong Kong Flu in 1968. “We have a long corporate memory and we’ve learnt to survive in an industry that is famous for being short-lived,” he says. “Sometimes you don’t get a choice. Some people are efectively shut down by this crisis. Some won’t be re-opening and for those businesses, we mourn. “For the rest of us, we need to work harder and smarter. We are way out of our comfort zones right now.” Nicholas, who is also an event director of Geelong Revival and chair of Geelong Museum of Motoring and Industry and former chair of Tourism Geelong, shares some tips on how businesses can adapt quickly to operating during coronavirus.

Control costs “To survive, start pulling the belt in as far as you can. You have more control over costs than revenues, so cut your cloth to suit. “Delay planned capital works. Cut expenses to the bone. Take a very hard look at each expense and trim hard. hen cut again. “Technology can be the key. Challenge how you do things. Preserve your key people – you will need them again soon. “Roll with the changed circumstances. We’ve moved 80 per cent of our staf out of the oice. We have stood down some people and moved our staf to three-quarters of normal hours. “With the government’s help we’ll hopefully stand all our staf back up soon.”
Director of Pace Advertising Nicholas Heath. (Supplied)
Revenue and resources “Once you’ve got your costs under control, ix the revenue side. Here’s where you need to get creative. If business is looking grim, look at your skill set and resources. What else can you do? Which parts of your business are still active? Push on all fronts and re-enforce success. “his crisis will not just be about the virus – it will be about the efect it has on the economy in
the longer term. his will impact us all for the next few years. “Plan for a tough environment but remember there will be opportunity as we emerge.” Nicholas remembers how hard Geelong was hit during the 1990s recession. “We were in the worst- afected city in a badly-afected state in one of the hardest hit countries. Now the reverse is true.
