Hats off to our heroes A thousand hats are en route to Geelong hospital to protect nurses and their families against coronavirus infection, thanks to about 1450 volunteer sewers. “We’ll have them delivered by the end of the week,” said Deb Elliott, co-ordinator of Helping our Hospital Heroes Australia. Deb established the group during self-isolation after a trip to New Zealand, co-ordinating 1000 hats for Royal Melbourne Hospital, the Independent revealed earlier this month. As of Wednesday, the group had 1452 members and had delivered about 3500 hats to hospitals across Australia with orders for 7000 more. “I can’t believe how quickly this has expanded,” Deb said. The hats add to existing protective equipment and help protect health professionals, particularly those with long hair, and their families. The hats delivered to University Hospital Geelong included a special message for health professionals: “We just love making them for you and we appreciate everything you do for us.” Luke Voogt

Recovery signs promising By Luke Voogt Five in six COVID-19 cases in Geelong and the Surf Coast have reached the 14-day recovery threshold, based on the latest data. he average recovery time for mild coronavirus cases is two weeks, and three to six weeks for severe cases, according to the World Health Organisation. Greater Geelong had 62 conirmed coronavirus cases when the Independent went to press, of which 53 were diagnosed at least a fortnight ago. he Surf Coast Shire had 10, compared to nine on April 3, according to the Department of

Health and Human Services. Only ive of 72 COVID-19 cases in Geelong and the Surf Coast have required hospital admission, according to Barwon Health head of infectious diseases Eugene Athan. “he vast majority of COVID-19 cases in the region have been mild enough to recover at home without hospital treatment,” Professor Athan said. “None of our COVID-19 patients have required admission for intensive care, and we’re pleased that each of the current conirmed cases have been able to recover at home.” Professor Athan commended locals for helping to reduce the spread of the virus by

adhering to the physical distancing guidelines. “But it’s important to remain vigilant and stay at home when possible,” he warned. he result comes as the state government yesterday announced renovations to mobilise the former Geelong Private Hospital in the ight against coronavirus were almost complete. Over the past few weeks workers transformed the previously vacant building to provide a new acute respiratory assessment clinic with 50 new beds and consulting rooms. “Our health system has risen to the challenge to bring additional beds online in just a few short weeks,” Geelong MP Christine

Couzens said. he clinic has treated at least 147 patients since opening late March with referrals coming from GPs, screening clinics and Geelong’s public emergency department, according to the government. Screening and testing will continue at the drive-through service at Barwon Health North, which is testing up to 80 people a day with capacity to scale up if required, a government spokesperson said. he transformation of the former hospital is part of a $1.9 billion state government health fund to increase hospital beds by 700 across Victoria.

Council will consider waiving rates until June 30 for businesses forced to close as a result of the pandemic, in its next meeting on April 28, ater directing City Hall staf to investigate the measure. Other potential support measures include waiving the Central Geelong Marketing levy until June 30 and suspending on-street parking fees for the remainder of the year. he hardship policy states the council can

Bob distils ‘golden’ gin

An Ocean Grove grandfather is looking forward to spoiling his grandkids “rotten” ater winning more than $608,000 in a Saturday night lotto. When a lotto oicial phoned on Tuesday morning the man revealed the life-changing moment he discovered the win. “I checked my ticket on Saturday night just before I went to bed,” he explained. “I was laying there scrolling through my phone when I remembered to check my ticket. “I saw that I had won a division six prize of $14.75 and thought, ‘that wasn’t too bad’. “hen I scrolled down further and saw that I had all six numbers and had also won division one. “I was in shock. I turned my phone of and just lay in bed staring at the ceiling. I thought I was losing my mind. I couldn’t comprehend it at all! “I called my daughter who lives nearby and got her to come around to double check it. “I’ve been playing TattsLotto now for over 40 years and this is by far the most decent win I’ve ever had,” he said. When asked how he planned to spend the windfall, he said his top priority was sharing it with his children and grandchildren. he Ocean Grove man was one of seven division one-winning entries nationally in TattsLotto’s Saturday night draw. His division one win netted him $608,714.79 while his division six win took his total prize to $608,729.54. he odds of winning Saturday night’s draw were 1 in 8,145,060.

Hamlyn Heights gin-maker Bob Connor has won international gold. Two years ater their irst foray into gin making, Bob and muso mate Neil Gray have achieved a gold medal ranking in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. heir blend, with “a bold juniper, pepperberry and lime-steeped taste”, was one of 61 to achieve the ranking out of about 400 gins blind-tasted by industry experts. heir gin ranked higher than entries from well-known brands such as Gordon’s and Hendrick’s. “We were up against all the multinationals,” Bob said. “ I couldn’t believe it! “Today San Francisco, tomorrow the world.” Ater playing together in cover bands since the ’70s, Bob and Neil began making whiskey in north-west Tasmania in 2015 at a distillery named in honour of Neil’s dad, a Scottish expat and doctor. In 2018 they began making gin. “here’s nothing mysterious about distilling,” said Bob, a Geelong resident since 1996. “If you follow the process and know what you’re trying to achieve it’s actually quite simple.” hey created 17 prototypes before entering their latest gin in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. “I call it chaos theory; you change one thing a little it changes the whole balance of the gin,” Bob said. he pair are now enjoying their David and Goliath victory. “It’s probably the smallest distillery in Tasmania,” Bob said. “We’ve got no room to expand and we really don’t want to. We just want to stay small and focus on quality.”

Prototype helps virus ight

Flushed items block pipes

By Luke Voogt A Wandana Heights engineer has adapted protective barrier designs to shield Geelong health professionals against the spread of COVID-19. Lachlan Patrick used a laser cutter and 3D printer to prototype an intubation box, which prevents droplet transfer from patients to health professionals. His most recent versions also include a vent that can whisk away droplets using a vacuum, he explained. “hink of it as an exhaust – it hooks up to pre-existing equipment,” the 24-year-old said. Lachlan adapted the barrier from designs, currently in use in the ight against coronavirus overseas, to it equipment at St John of God Geelong Hospital. As Geelong Tech School’s program facilitator, he normally teaches high school students in the institute’s fabrication lab. he lab’s design sotware and advanced equipment can produce components in hours that might otherwise take weeks or months to complete by hand, Lachlan explained. With no classes running on location during the pandemic, he and other staf used the equipment to design the modiied barrier. Department of Education regulations prevent Lachlan and staf from manufacturing the boxes for actual use. But St John of God could now take the designs and prototypes to a manufacturer, saving the hospital valuable time and money in the design process. “If you get the design right then you can hand that over to reproduce,” he said. “A lot of costs come from the design and the time it takes to work out all the bugs.” Using engineering to help in a crisis is nothing new for Lachlan. Ater completing his

mechatronics degree at Deakin University, he travelled to Vanuatu to help build shelters and water collection devices for people who led a volcanic eruption on their island. He also travelled to India with Global Village Project, a group of medical students who provide medical care to hird World communities.

Lachlan joined his partner Jo Eaton, the group’s operations director, at an orphanage where he helped design an irrigation system. “We were always sort of thinking what’s the next thing we can work on,” he said. “he personality quirk that deines most engineers is: if it’s broken, ix it, if it’s not broken, it doesn’t have enough features.”

Geelong sewer blockages increased 50 per cent in the past ive weeks as the low-on efect of the coronavirus toilet paper shortage starts to hit. Residents who have been unable to buy toilet paper are lushing wet wipes and paper towel down the toilet, blocking the system. Barwon Water has urged its customers to only lush toilet paper. “Toilets and drains are not rubbish bins and are not designed to handle anything that doesn’t break down in the sewerage system,” Barwon Water managing director Tracey Slatter said. “When people lush things like wet wipes, tissues, paper towel, let alone other rubbish and scraps, it causes blockages that can lead to sewage spilling into streets and people’s properties.” he blockages wasted Barwon Water employees’ time and customers’ money that could be better spent elsewhere, according to Ms Slatter. “hese blockages are expensive and time-consuming to ix,” she said. “At a time when everyone is very focused on hygiene and public health, it is critical that people follow the rules and lush only toilet paper.” Keeping essential water and sewerage services running smoothly was especially important in times of crisis such as the coronavirus pandemic, Ms Slatter said. “he message is clear. If it isn’t toilet paper, it goes in the bin. Set one up next to your toilet if you need to.” Luke Voogt

Ater 17 years caring for cancer survivors and the elderly Newtown’s Jan Hinds is not letting the coronavirus pandemic stop her. he 59-year-old is among many council care workers still supporting more than 5000 disabled, vulnerable and elderly people across Geelong during the pandemic, with additional safety precautions in place. “I’ve been caring for a lady who’s been battling leukaemia for more than 17 years and is still going,” she said. “I just love what I do, there can never be enough kindness in this world.” Jan said making her clients feel “loved” and “not forgotten” was especially important as the pandemic made them more isolated than ever. Ater working in nursing and hospitality, Jan became a council care worker in 2003 to

give back while being a “mum irst” as daughter Kelsey started primary school. Among “hundreds of lovely clients” was a woman with no children or “anybody else in the world” who Jan visited in hospital during her last moments. “She was really, really, low but so happy to see me,” she said. “About 30 minutes later, she passed away. I still have an orchid in my garden that she gave me more than 12 years ago.” She helped others regain their independence, like a Lithuanian widow with no kids who broke her hip. he woman was able to return to her Bell Park home, where she had lived for decades, with help from council carers, Jan said.

The federal government has announced a $50 million program to support public interest journalism in regional Australia during the COVID-19 pandemic. Geelong-based senator Sarah Henderson said media organisations across the country are facing signiicant challenges due to the impacts of COVID-19. The funding would help regional newspapers, such as the Independent, continue to provide timely, accurate and vital information to their communities, she said.

Overnight arrest Tactical police arrested a 36-year-old Drysdale man and 39-year-old Geelong West woman after they barricaded themselves in a Hamlyn Heights motel room on Wednesday night. Police located a stolen motorcycle at the Lily Street property and called in the Critical Incident Response team amid concerns the pair were armed. They were arrested peacefully following negotiations. FOR BREAKING NEWS, VISIT Web: geelongindy.com.au Facebook.com/GeelongIndy Twitter.com/GeelongIndy

Lara seven lout COVID-19 rules By Luke Voogt Seven people have breached COVID-19 restrictions on Lara roads in seven days, according to Geelong Highway Patrol Sergeant Megan De Winne. Oicers stopped a Lara P-plater, who was driving to a mate’s house with four teenage passengers, on Elcho Road at 5.35pm on Monday. Police ined all ive $1652 for breaching coronavirus restrictions and ined the driver another $826 for driving an unregistered vehicle.

Last Tuesday, Sergeant De Winne was in an unmarked patrol car when she pulled over another P-plater driving on the wrong side of Forest Road South towards Geelong. he driver, from Frankston, and his passenger were travelling to visit a friend ater purchasing cigarettes, Sergeant De Winne said. Both were ined $1652 each. “Everyone [caught] breaching these COVID-19 restrictions is getting booked,” Sergeant De Winne said. “hey think they’re invincible or that they won’t spread it, but we’re dealing with something that’s a lot more severe

than the common cold.” Meanwhile, driving ofences during the Easter long weekend fell compared to last year as most locals stayed at home, Geelong Highway Patrol Acting Senior Sergeant Peter Quick said. Police recorded 218 ofences across Geelong and the Surf Coast from last hursday to Monday, compared to 266 during the same period last year. While “people being cooped up at home” was “awful”, COVID-19 restrictions had reduced crashes across Victoria, Senior Sergeant Quick

said. Geelong had just one serious injury crash during the Easter break when two cars collided in South Geelong about 10am on Saturday. A 25-year-old Condah woman and a 46-year-old woman were taken to University Hospital Geelong. Across Geelong and the Surf Coast, police caught 27 motorists drug or drink-driving and booked another 181 for other ofences such as speeding. he Victorian road toll was 73 ater the long weekend, compared to 88 at the same time last year.

Idol inalist joins angels An Australian Idol inalist has joined forces with a Geelong web developer whose toilet paper shortage inspired a website helping those stranded in the coronavirus crisis. he idea originated when Enterprise Monkey founder Aamir Qutub, like many others, found himself short of toilet paper. His sister Saba came to his aid, inspiring him to create a website he calls Angel Next Door. Ocean Grove singer and 2009 Australian Idol inalist Kim Cooper is the ‘face’ of Angel Next Door. Kim became an ambassador for the website to do more and encourage others to help, she said. “It can be as simple as cooking a meal or doing a grocery shop for someone in your street who needs a little support. A small gesture can go a long way.” he website works by connecting neighbours, Aamir explained.

“Plenty of people are doing it tough right now,” he said. “It’s not just toilet paper – they’re facing challenges with food, groceries, medicines, money, jobs, stress and lots more.” Aamir said people could register their details privately on the website, then post what help they can ofer or what they need. he website then rallies people living nearby to spring into action based on those requests. “It might be cooking some take-home dinners or walking the dog … putting out the rubbish bins,” he said. Aamir and his team run angelnextdoor. com.au out of Villawood’s Geelong database. Aamir says the website is far more secure than coronavirus assistance eforts on social media. More than 3000 people have registered with Angel Next Door since it started at the beginning of this month. Luke Voogt
